U.S. To Move Troops From Germany, In Shift That Esper Says Will Strengthen NATO Against Russia – Radio Free Europe/ Radio Liberty

WASHINGTON -- The United States will move almost 12,000 troops out of Germany, relocating some of them to Belgium and Italy, in a strategic shift the Pentagon says will help deter Russia.

Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on July 29 that the repositioning will strengthen NATO, enhance deterrence against Russia, and improve U.S. strategic and operational flexibility.

Of the 34,500 U.S. military personnel stationed in Germany, some 6,400 will be sent home, while nearly 5,600 will be repositioned to other NATO countries.

U.S. President Donald Trump in June announced plans to accelerate a repositioning of troops from Germany, a longtime hub for U.S. military operations in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

The decision came as Trump repeatedly criticized Europes richest country for failing to meet its NATO commitment to spend 2 percent of economic output on defense.

Trumps announcement came as a surprise to the German government, suggesting there was a lack of coordination with a key NATO ally.

Esper said the scattered U.S. troop presence in Germany will be consolidated at other locations in Europe, including at NATO bases in Belgium and Italy.

Repositioning air assets to Italy will move them closer to the Black Sea region, while moving U.S. command structures to Belgium will help improve coordination with the NATO command, Esper said.

The troop relocation out of Germany is tied to an agreement announced last year to move more than 1,000 U.S. troops to Poland.

Esper said some troops could also go to the Baltic states.

We are moving forces out of Central Europe, Germany, where they had been since the Cold War. We are following in many ways the boundary east, where our newest allies are in the Black Sea region, Poland, and the Baltics, Esper said, addressing larger questions of strategy.

Even as about 6,400 troops will return to the United States, Esper said these units or similar ones will conduct continuous rotational deployments in Europe in the Black Sea region to enhance deterrence and reassure allies along NATOs southeastern flank.

Esper did not provide a timeline for the troop repositioning but said some changes could happen within weeks, while others will take more time.

There has been some resistance in the U.S. Congress against any troop withdrawals from Germany, even from some Republicans who say the move would be a gift to Russia and a threat to U.S. national security.

Its also unclear whether the Trump administrations plan will survive if the president is not reelected in November.

Earlier this month, the premiers of four German states housing U.S. bases urged members of Congress to block the withdrawal plans. The letter said that U.S. forces in Germany -- with their bases, military hospitals, and other infrastructure -- form "the backbone of the U.S. presence in Europe and NATO's ability to act."

The U.S. announced plans to withdraw about 12,000 troops from Germany, a shift that Defense Secretary Mark Esper said would bolster NATO and deter Russia but President Donald Trump signaled was largely about punishing Germany as a defense deadbeat.

Esper said Wednesday that about 5,600 troops would be redeployed to other nations in Europe, including Italy and Belgium, while 6,400 would return to the U.S. Even as Esper was pitching the strategic benefits of the shift at the Pentagon, Trump was at the White House undercutting the militarys case.

Theyve taken advantage of us for many years, Trump, who has frequently complained about German defense spending, told reporters. We dont want to be the suckers anymore.

Trump has long said Germany and other partners in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization should quickly ramp up efforts to meet the alliances goal that all members spend at least 2% of gross domestic product on defense. Now, as Trump faces a tough re-election battle, the drawdown lets him begin fulfilling a 2016 campaign promise to bring American troops home, though it risks further rupturing a NATO alliance already frayed by the presidents America First policies.

A U.S. official said the process, which would leave about 24,000 forces in Germany, would probably take years.

Why NATO, at 70, Is Facing More Doubt and Criticism: QuickTake

Part of the shift will involve moving forces to Italy, Belgium and other nations, while some troops returning to the U.S. will still do rotations in Germany, Esper said.

Various United States headquarters will be consolidated in locations in Europe, outside of Germany, including in some cases co-locating at the same locations as their NATO counterparts in Belgium and Italy, Esper said. Other forces will do continuous rotations in the Black Sea region.

General Tod Wolters, commander of U.S. forces in Europe and NATOs supreme allied commander, said the headquarters for U.S. Africa Command in Stuttgart, Germany, was among the operations likely to move elsewhere. About 1,500 personnel are based there.

Pressed about Trumps focus on political digs at Germany over the strategic benefits of the plan, Esper acknowledged the move reflects the presidents demands that some troops return to the U.S. But he also said he agrees that Germany could spend more than the 2% of GDP target for defense spending established by NATO.

Lets be clear, I think Germany is the wealthiest country in Europe, Esper said. Germany can and should pay more to its defense.

European allies, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel, were stunned earlier this year by Trumps decision to proceed with a troop withdrawal without prior consultations. On Wednesday, Air Force General John Hyten, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, assured reporters that consultations will take place as the withdrawal goes forward.

We are now at another one of those inflection points in NATOs history, Esper said. Im confident the alliance will be all the better and stronger for it.

Why U.S. Engagement in Libya Is Critical for Strengthening NATO – The National Interest

A French naval vessel enforcing the UN arms embargo on Libya was nearly involved in a skirmish with the Turkish navy on June 10. The French frigate Courbet sought to pull over a cargo vessel it suspected of smuggling arms into Libya; Paris claims that Turkish ships then targeted the Courbet with their weapon systems. Though both Turkey and France are NATO members, they exchanged heated criticism over the incident, highlighting how the fight for the future of Libya has strained the seventy-one-year-old alliance. It is unlikely that any NATO member other than the United States can correct this dangerous coursean effort that will require pushback against the ambitions of individual NATO members, particularly Turkey.

Ironically, NATO leaders once lauded the 2011 UN-backed NATO intervention in Libya as a demonstration of the alliances new role in the postCold War era. Then-Secretary General of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen praised the operation as offering a template for future NATO missions, while U.S. Admiral James G. Stavridis, then serving as NATOs top commander, opined that the intervention in Libya demonstrated that the alliance remains an essential source of stability. Things quickly soured after 2011, however, and Libya, once a potentially unifying and reaffirming chapter for NATO, now threatens to tear it apart.

From the fall of Muammar el-Qaddafi onwards, Libya devolved into a civil war, and the country is now torn between the opposing forces of the UN-recognized Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) based in Tripoli and General Khalifa Haftars self-styled Libyan National Army (LNA), based in eastern Libya. The proxy nature of the conflict makes it even more complicated. Russia, Egypt, and the UAE back the LNA, while Qatar bankrolls the GNA as Turkey provides significant military support. The role of Turkey does not enjoy NATO sponsorship and is further complicated by Frances subtle backing of Haftar, which plays out through diplomatic support for the LNA while calling for a cease-fire in a bid to remain relevant in the region. Italy, meanwhile, a critical NATO player in the Mediterranean region, has taken the diplomatic side of Turkey and the GNA.

Absent from the discussion of Libyas future is the United States, which might explain the divisions within NATO. Just as NATO intervened in Libya at the behest of Washington, it is unlikely that the quagmire of alliances and rivalries can be fixed without Washingtons help.

The United States absence in Libya means that NATO members not only lack unity but quarrel with each other. France had particularly scathing words for Turkey following the Courbet incident in June. Although the incident passed without any fighting, France commented that it cant pretend there isnt a Turkey problem at NATO, and opted to suspend its critical role in enforcing the arms embargo on Libya.

The French are correct, even if their actions are not above criticism: Turkey is the greatest obstacle to restoring NATO unity on Libya. Recep Tayipp Erdogans support for the GNA stems mainly from his increasingly militant and Islamist foreign policy and his rivalry with Egypt, not any interest in promoting democracy. Rather than calm the situation, Ankaras conduct in Libya has caused a dramatic increase in drone warfare alongside the export of Syrian Islamist troops to Libya, some of whom are child soldiers.

If the United States is to use its influence to unify NATO around a common purpose in Libya, then it will require curtailing Ankaras efforts to call the shots. Erdogans democracy-busting actions at home should give pause to any observer when considering what kind of country he seeks to turn Libya into. Instead of granting Erdogan relative impunity for his misconduct as it has in Syria and Iraq, Washington and NATO must demand that Turkey conform to the values of the trans-Atlantic alliance before it gets more involved in Libya.

In addition to advocating for a unified NATO policy, Washington should also use its influence to sponsor a peace settlement in Libya. Aided by Americas unwillingness to get more involved in Libya, Ankara and Moscow have sidelined Washington and its Western allies and tried to broker Libyas future on their own terms. If Washington were to put its weight behind a peace settlement in Libya, then it could reaffirm its prowess in the diplomatic sphere and unify NATO around a single vision for the war-torn nation.

The inability of NATO members to find common ground in Libya is having ramifications that are only now being understood. The French retreat from the United Nations mission off of Libyas shores, known as Operation Sea Guardian, will diminish maritime security in the Mediterranean region. Meanwhile, Turkey is blocking the implementation of a critical Baltic defense project that it had already agreed to support last year. The project is a key element of NATOs strategy for countering Russian influence in Eastern Europe. Ankaras conduct not only risks alienating NATO members in Eastern Europe but also potentially threatens their security.

Should the Libya problem continue to go unresolved, there is no telling how much damage it will cause to the trans-Atlantic alliance. Washington must make its presence felt. Libya may be tearing NATO apart, but it also offers the alliance a chance to once again renew its purpose.

Dr. Stella Immanuel: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know – Heavy.com

Facebook/Dr. Stella ImmanuelDr. Stella Immanuel pictured on her Facebook page.

Dr. Stella Immanuel is the Houston doctor who is advocating the use of hydroxychloroquine as a cure for coronavirus. Immanuel, 55, went viral after championing the use of the drug in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on July 27 as part of the Americas Frontline Doctors Summit.

On her Facebook page, Immanuel refers to herself as a Physician, Author, Speaker, Entrepreneur, Deliverance Minister, Gods battle axe and weapon of war. On that page, Immanuel says that she was born in Bali, Cameroon.

Immanuel studied medicine in Nigeria between 1984 and 1990. In November 1998, Immanuel began working as a pediatrician in Alexandria, Louisiana, and shes been a physician at the Rehoboth Medical Center since October 2019. Immanuel is the founder of Fire Power Ministries, which was founded in 2002. Immanuel lists herself as being based in Houston, Texas. In her Family and Relationships section, Immanuel says that she is single and lists three daughters as her children.

Heres what you need to know about Dr. Stella Immanuel:

Immanuel studied medicine at the University of Calabar in Calabar in southeastern Nigeria. Immanuel attended the school between 1984 and 1990. According to listings on the U.S. News & World Report website of Immanuels background that were available on the morning of July 28, she completed her residency in pediatrics at the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center. The listings appeared to have been removed from the site by late morning on July 28. A Nigerian news article indicated that Immanuel interned under Dr. Babatunde Dosu, a Dallas-based Nigerian pediatrician. It also stated that she holds medical licenses in Texas, Louisiana and Kentucky.

Since October 2019, Immanuel has been a physician at the Rehoboth Medical Center in Houston. In November 1998, Immanuel began working as a pediatrician at Southern Pediatric Clinic in Alexandria, Louisiana. She is sometimes listed as a physician with the last name Immanuel (Gwandiku-Ambe).

In videos of her speech at the July 27 summit in Washington, D.C., Immanuel introduced herself: Im Dr Stella Immanuel. Im a primary care physician in Houston, Texas. I went to medical school in West Africa, Nigeria, where I took care of malaria patients, treated them with hydroxychloroquine and stuff like that. So Im used to these medications.

A lengthy bio on Immanuels Details section on Facebook calls the doctor a prophet of God to the nations. One sentence in the profile reads, Her attitude toward demonic forces has been described as cut-throat, a warrior to the core. Immanuel is also a wealth transfer coach. Immanuel believes you can be saved anointed, fire brand and wealthy too. The Fire Power Ministry website indicates that Immanuel is a true daughter of Dr D.K. Olukoya of Mountain of Fire and Miracles ministries.

The Facebook bio continues, Dr. Stella, has established a Christian resource center which supplies books, videos, CDs & other teaching materials to residents in her birthplace of Bali, Cameroon. Immanuel is also credited with crusades, health fairs, raising money for orphanages, providing funding for small businesses and being the host of a radio and television show, Fire Power. The bio opens with, I shoot first and ask questions later and ends with Immanuels favorite quotation, Lord teach my hands to war and my fingers to fight.

As the Daily Beast pointed out, some of Immanuels sermons posted to her website have strange medical claims, including one in which she claims that certain medical issues like endometriosis, cysts, infertility and impotence are the result of sex with spirit husbands and spirit wives, which Immanuel described as having sex in dreams with witches and demons.

We call them all kinds of names endometriosis, we call them molar pregnancies, we call them fibroids, we call them cysts, but most of them are evil deposits from the spirit husband, she said.

Immanuel has also written several books about faith in a series called The Occupying Force Series, which includes titles such as Keys to Effective Spiritual Warfare and I Trust God As My Commander in Chief.

On July 27, Immanuels remarks on the use of hydroxychloroquine went viral and clips of her speaking were shared and retweeted by President Donald Trump as well as Donald Trump Jr. However, Immanuel has been a vocal supporter of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19 patients for months now, posting about it frequently on her social media pages. On May 21, she wrote, I treat patients with covid19 and Hydroxychloroquine with zinc works. They get betterin 24 hours. I have not lost a patient yet. My family and I take it for prevention. Many doctors and nurses take it.

Immanuel has posted her support for Trump. In the wake of Trumps acquittal during the 2020 impeachment trial, Immanuel posteda photo of Trump with the caption, Acquitted. Trump has been advocating the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for coronavirus since April 2020. In May 2020, the president said he had been taking the drug.

In April, Immanuel wrote a piece in Physician Outlook in which she promoted the use of hydroxychloroquine and questioned why its use had been discouraged. She wrote, For political reasons, licensed physicians will take to the media to scare the public from taking something that could potentially help them.

The Fire Power Ministries website Beliefs section states they are against unmarried couples living together, homosexuality, bestiality, polygamy, etc.

Immanuel has listed a Deliverance Prayer against Homosexuality and Sexual Perversion on her website. She also posted through her Fire Power Ministries Facebook page in December 2016 about her belief that practicing and celebrating [homosexuality] will take you to hell.

On February 13, Immanuel reposted a post from Dr. Luana Stines on Facebook. The photo showed former Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg embracing his husband, Chasten. The post begins with the words, Has the MORAL COMPASS of America tipped its scale so far into the pit of hell that homosexuality has become the norm? Another section of the post reads, If we dont STAND AGAINST SUCH VILE WICKEDNESS, sodomy will overtake the next generation!

Baylor UniversityMima Fondong in a Baylor University photo.

Immanuels daughter, Mima Fondong, is a graduate of Baylor University and the University of Westminster in London. According to her LinkedIn page, Fondong is based in Houston, Texas. A Rotary Club newsletter from Shreveport, Louisiana, says that Fondong received a $26,000 scholarship to study in London, where she studied global health and nutrition with a focus on disease prevention and treatment.

In an interview with Baylor University, Fondong said she grew up surrounded by people with careers in health care and wanted to be a doctor from a young age. She said, What sealed the deal for my attending Baylor was when I visited the University toward the end of my senior year in high school. After arriving on campus and being greeted with an endless supply of smiles, hospitality and most importantly, the apparent love of Jesus Christ, immediately I knew Baylor was where I belong. I could not picture myself at any other university.

During her time at Baylor, Fondong was a contestant in the schools Miss Green and Gold pageant. She was also the president of the African Student Association, the Baylor Lariat reported. At an event, she shared that it was difficult growing up in America because her parents did not understand the difficulty of growing up in a different country and a small town without many people from other countries or cultures around them.

Immanuel is also the mother of Bernette, who began attending the University of Houston in 2017. Bernette and Mima have both recently posted about the nightmare that was their experiences growing up as Black girls in Alexandria, Louisiana. One wrote, I didnt realize I was a victim of deep social & systemic abuse.

The Doctor Behind the Disputed Covid Data – The New York Times

In 2008 or early 2009, Dr. Olcese and another chief resident shared concerns about Dr. Desai with their supervisors senior physicians and faculty at Duke during discussions about whether to promote him to the next year of residency. It is unclear what the faculty members discussed during their private deliberations, but ultimately, Dr. Desai was moved up. A Duke spokeswoman would confirm only his time there.

After his residency, Dr. Desai obtained an M.B.A. in three months from Western Governors University, an online university based in Salt Lake City, the school confirmed. Then, after starting a vascular surgery fellowship at the University of Texas at Houston, he ran into trouble. He had so antagonized some supervisors that they asked the department chairman to expel him, said Dr. Hazim Safi, who was then in that role.

Some of the attending staff didnt like his behavior, and didnt want him to graduate, Dr. Safi said in an interview.

While Dr. Safi said that Dr. Desai could be abrasive, he had worked on papers with the younger physician and was convinced the complaints were driven by personality differences and professional jealousy, not substantive deficiencies in surgical skill or patient care. Instead of failing him, he said, he gave Dr. Desai an opportunity to work on his professionalism and interpersonal skills.

I intervened and he graduated, the former chairman said.

At Dr. Desais most recent post at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights, Ill., he became involved in at least four medical malpractice cases that are still pending, including three filed in 2019.

Those suits include a claim that he failed to properly perform surgery to restore circulation to an accident victims leg, which later required partial amputation. Another alleges that negligent treatment by Dr. Desai and other doctors resulted in the removal of a substantial portion of a patients bowel.

Updated July 27, 2020

The earlier case against the hospital contends that Dr. Desai performed surgery in 2016 to remove plaque buildup from a 60-year-old mans carotid artery, then failed to report to the hospital after the patient developed swelling in his neck that caused difficulty swallowing and breathing. The patient later died.

As US nears 150,000 coronavirus deaths, group warns of hundreds of thousands more without action – CNN

And a medical education association is warning that the US must control the pandemic now, or risk seeing deaths skyrocket "well into the multiple hundreds of thousands."

"Decisive, coordinated action is urgently needed to save lives, end the pandemic, restore America's economy, and return our lives to normalcy," Dr. David Skorton, AAMC president and CEO, said Wednesday.

Disease trends are mixed: Deaths are increasing and hospitalizations are at or near peak levels, though new, daily reported infections are declining slightly.

But health experts have warned the death rate likely would rise as it is now, as a lagging consequence of a large spike in cases weeks earlier especially in the South and West.

Infectious disease experts say the country is now at a critical juncture, as the debate about how and whether to reopen schools for in-person learning rumbles on.

Case rates rose as businesses reopened and distancing rules relaxed in late spring, and those wanting more normalcy soon should get more disciplined now by wearing masks, limiting outdoor dining and social gatherings, and closing bars, Dr. Anthony Fauci said.

"It's not going to spontaneously come down," Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said Tuesday in a call with several governors about the pandemic.

Some key figures about the pandemic in the US:

More than 1,240 deaths were reported Tuesday -- the most in a day since May 27, according to Johns Hopkins figures.

The seven-day average of daily deaths rose above 1,000 Tuesday -- the first first time since June 2.

In 29 states, average daily deaths were at least 10% higher over the previous week, according to Johns Hopkins data.

Rates of new infections are falling. The seven-day average for new daily cases was 64,684 Tuesday -- about 3% lower than a week ago.

Group: Take these steps, or see deaths skyrocket

It did not say when this tally might be reached, or forecast the number more precisely.

It urges the Trump administration to invoke the Defense Production Act, or determine other means, to solve critical shortages in Covid-19 testing supplies and personal protective equipment; and to set targets for stockpiling supplies.

It also suggests ramping up Covid-19 testing capacity to more than 2 million a day and reducing the turnaround time for test results.

And it calls for "national standards on face coverings to stop the spread, especially by asymptomatic individuals, and make them mandatory in areas of growing community spread."

The document also advocates "establishing and enforcing national criteria for local stay-at-home orders and reopening protocols."

The AAMC says it represents all accredited medical schools in the United States and 17 in Canada, as well as 400 teaching hospitals.

Reopening schools will provide insight into virus

With schools closed since March and April, a knowledge gap has persisted around how young children experience and spread the virus, Fauci, the United States' top infectious disease doctor, said.

"Though this may sound a little scary and harsh -- I don't mean it to be that way -- is that you're going to be actually part of the experiment of the learning curve of what we need to know," Fauci said during a discussion with Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers.

"We don't know the full impact," he said. "We don't have the total database of knowing what there is to expect."

Some states have begun to put plans in place to make in-person learning safer and online learning more effective. Tennessee announced testing and contact-tracing measures within schools, Oregon set restrictions for schools that can allow students back and Connecticut is investing $43.5 million in providing digital devices to help students learn remotely.

Although Fauci said that there is no "uni-dimensional answer" to how schools should reopen he reiterated that the "default position should be that we should try to the best of our ability to get the children back to school."

"I feel with some cautious optimism that it is a reasonable statement to make that by December we're going to have a safe and effective vaccine."

Drug rumors distracting from 'most powerful weapon'

But the drug has not been shown to be effective against coronavirus, and can even produce harmful side effects, former US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy told CNN's Wolf Blitzer Tuesday.

"All the time that we often end up spending dispelling these myths around hydroxychloroquine is time that we are not spending working on solving the actual problem in front of us," Murthy said.

And measures already in place to combat the virus' spread could be the key to solving the problem, the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention's Director Dr. Robert Redfield said Tuesday in an interview with ABC news.

"We have the most powerful weapon in our hands right now, I mean it's an enormously powerful weapon. It's just a simple, flimsy mask," Redfield said. "This virus can be defeated if people just wear a mask."

Numbers on the decline after face mask requirements

Although some states continue to see surges and set records in the numbers of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, Tuesday's total of new cases across the nation stood at 61,660, slightly lower than at this point last week.

Kentucky, a state that is among the at least 41 to require masks, reported 532 new cases Tuesday and a 5.08% positivity rate, which has gone down for the first time in four days, Gov. Andy Beshear said.

"Again, too early to draw conclusions, but I hope I've said, I hope that this is us starting to see, because the time period is right, where the facial covering requirement is starting to kick in and help," Beshear added.

Fauci reiterated advice to states still seeing surges Tuesday: wear masks, social distance, close bars where spread is high, wash hands and reopen economies in phases.

CNN's Brandon Miller, Andrea Kane, Annie Grayer, Maggie Fox, Rebekah Riess and Steve Almasy contributed to this report.

Vaccines may arrive in record time, but the virus has been faster – Harvard Gazette

Scientists have created candidate vaccines, which eventually could protect billions of people from COVID-19, with astonishing speed, compressing scientific efforts that usually take years into months. But the leader of a key drug trial said Tuesday that the blistering research pace has nonetheless been too slow to catch the coronavirus.

We are now five months into it, and a large-scale phase 3 trial launched yesterday, which is remarkable, said Lindsey Baden, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School (HMS). He also is a principal investigator of the first U.S. vaccine to enter such trials, some of which will happen at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Womens Hospital. It is fast, but we need to be as fast as this virus is. With four million infections, 150,000 deaths in this country alone, we have to move faster.

Baden is a principal investigator for the Brighams trial of a messenger RNA-based vaccine, whose promising early results in 45 volunteers prompted federal officials to approve it for large-scale trials. The trials of the vaccine from Moderna Inc. and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases will involve 30,000 people at 89 locations around the country. Early results showed that the vaccine was well-tolerated by subjects receiving it though there were passing side effects such as chills, headaches, and injection-site pain and it induced an immune response in volunteers.

The new trial will test that immune response on many more healthy subjects, seeing whether the vaccine protects from infection, and, as secondary goals, lessens severity of illness and reduces chances of death. The study will also probe the duration of any protection the vaccine provides.

Baden and others involved in developing and testing other vaccine candidates said getting one approved for wide use is unlikely before early next year. Dan Barouch, the William Bosworth Castle Professor of Medicine and professor of immunology at HMS and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, said a candidate vaccine could be ready for emergency authorization by late fall, but only if everything goes as well as possible between now and then. Barouchs adenovirus-based vaccine is being developed and tested in conjunction with Johnson & Johnson.

Trials of other promising vaccines are underway at the University of Oxford and in China.

Baden and Barouch spoke at an online public briefing on vaccine progress by the Massachusetts Consortium on Pathogen Readiness, or MassCPR, an HMS-led, multi-institution collaboration aimed at better understanding the SARS-CoV-2 virus and developing treatments and vaccines to protect against COVID-19.

The briefing included a discussion of how the human immune response works, of the challenges faced by high-risk communities, and of three major vaccine development efforts, along with a Q&A session.

HMS Dean George Daley, who hosted the briefing, said the rapid development of several vaccine candidates a process that typically takes three to nine years was made possible by countless unglamorous hours in the lab over earlier years and was evidence of the importance of supporting basic research. Despite the speed at which progress has been made toward a COVID-19 vaccine, he pointed out that globally in just seven months, some 15 million people have been infected and 600,000 have died.

As the pandemic has caused grave human suffering, scientists have been working tirelessly to crack the biology and the behavior of the virus and develop treatments and vaccines, Daley said. Theyve done so with unprecedented speed and a true spirit of international cooperation and collaboration.

Bisola Ojikutu, assistant professor of medicine and of global health and social medicine at HMS, said trials should include significant numbers of members of minority groups and, whenever a vaccine is ready, distribution efforts should ensure that the communities most at risk arent in the background. Ojikutu said that hospitalizations, a measure of severe COVID-19, are 4.6 times higher among Latinx Americans than among whites, while those among Blacks and Indigenous people are 4.7 times and 5.3 times higher, respectively.

Ojikutu said that efforts to tend to high-risk communities have hurdles to clear that include historical incidents of abuse, such as the Tuskegee syphilis study, in which 600 Black men with latent disease were observed without informed consent and never offered treatment when the disease became active. Other concerns include a vaccines safety, cost, and side effects.

Ojikutu said a lack of trust is reflected in a recent Associated Press study that asked respondents whether they would agree to get a COVID vaccine. While 56 percent of white respondents said yes, only 37 percent of Latinx respondents did, and just 25 percent of Blacks. Ojikutu said experts are looking to successful public health campaigns for other conditions, such as the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, which increased minority participation in trials from 17 percent between 1988 and 2002 to 33 percent between 2002 and 2016.

Strategies for recruiting minorities into trials include first acknowledging there is a trust problem, Ojikutu said, but also actively engaging the community, partnering with community health centers, holding virtual town halls and other informational outreach, and increasing the diversity of those working on the effort.

Quite honestly, diversity in clinical trials is both scientific common sense and promotes social justice, Ojikutu said.

The experts also discussed Barouchs adenovirus vaccine, which uses an altered cold virus to present the immune system with SARS-CoV-2s characteristic spike protein and generate an immune response. They also discussed another effort, supported by the Gates Foundation, that seeks to generate an immune response using a protein from part of the spike. That protein-based vaccine, according to Nicole Frahm of the Bill & Melinda Gates Medical Research Institute, would be cheaper to produce and distribute and so better able to reach disadvantaged countries and populations.

Though much has been learned in the months since SARS-CoV-2 exploded globally, many important questions remain, participants said. One key question is how durable immunity is. Barouch said that trials in nonhuman primates showed that the immune response can be both robust and lasting, but evidence also has emerged in humans to cast doubt onto how lasting the immunity gained from infection will be. Questions remain about how long any immunity received from a vaccine will last, which is something the trials, coupled with the passage of time, should illuminate.

We believe that vaccines should proceed in parallel, since it is not yet clear which vaccine will be most protective and most deployable, Barouch said. There are 7 billion people in this world. Therefore we need multiple vaccines to be successful.

The Future of Entertainment: How Technological Advances in Entertainment Will Change Everything – License Global

The world constantly shifts its technology. From the newest iPhone hitting the shelves to graphics in video games getting just a little bit better every year, its hard to keep up with how much the world has changed from technological advances. Now, as time marches on, and during a global pandemic, the entertainment industry is reckoning with how it will move technology into the future and what that will mean for the world.

At this years San Diego Comic Con, which was held entirely virtually and called Comic-Con@Home, panelists in tech and entertainment gathered to talk about these rapid changes. The panel called The Future of Entertainment, included thought leaders from Paramount Pictures, The Masked Singer,CAA andSteinberg Sports. It was moderated byTravis Cloyd, futurist at FIU, and co-founder, Worldwide XR.

Speakers highlighted the pandemics immense impact on the entertainment industrybut not in the way many may think. In fact, some of the innovations that executives have come up with have ended up being a net positive livestreaming events being one of the most positive with digital concert experiences seen as a growing market.

[Livestreaming] is a big thing that will carry on even past the pandemic, says Phil Quist, music agent, CAA. One of our clients, Super M, a K-pop band, did a livestream from Korea and streamed it to the whole world. 75,000 people tuned in and they grossed over 2 million dollars which is more than they would for a regular show. BTS did one this past weekend and sold almost one billion tickets. Well see virtual beings, avatars, virtual worlds entirely where you can go to a virtual festival for example and interact with other virtual avatars that are tied to real people.

Augmented and virtual reality are set to become a valuable tool in film and television production as entertainment businesses, like set designers, have converted to a digital model for the time being.

We have a lot of experience building physical sets and now were building virtual and augmented sets and at the end of the day, my design studio has turned completely into a virtual design studio, says James Pearce Connelly, production designer, The Masked Singer. Now were getting calls from all sorts of different places [to build] worlds for them, already in 3D that can impose right into the camera.

Ted Schilowitz, futurist, Paramount, also expanded upon Connellys new experiences with set design.

Everything is dynamic, and we can actually bring that technology literally to the production set, says Schilowitz. We can feed virtual backgrounds into high resolution LED walls and use that as the lighting source for the characters and as the background which fundamentally looks real to the viewers. A director could say hmm those mountains dont look quite right. Could we bring in some other mountains? A technician could click a couple of buttons, grab a couple of files, 10 seconds later, theres the new mountains. The world of effects is starting to become the world of set design.

Schilowitz also says that certain technological advances in gaming and media, such as a fully-rendered avatars, much like social media phenomenon Little Miquela, are set to be commercialized within the next five to seven years and could be a huge niche in the consumer product market.

The panelists also discussed just how much entertainment will change technologically and how that will have an eventual impact on society as a whole. From diversity to city maintenance, increased student participation and more, entertainment technology is set to change the world.

Leslie Shannon, ecosystem and trend scouting head, Nokia, discussed a recent experience in Wellington, New Zealand, where she saw the city council begin to use a digital twin to render 3D model of the city they built ten years ago to mark what was going on within the city.

I think well really start seeing a union of the real and the virtual. [Wellington] started using that as the central point where all the different departments of the city council put their information into the digital twin, reports Shannon. Wellington is a city that is prone to earthquakes and flooding, so they were able to see okay, if the water rises due to global warming, what parts of the city will be hit first? Where do we maybe need to build sea walls? Thats the power of moving from data in a bunch of spreadsheets to putting it into something you can touch and feel. You no longer have to have a big sell; you can just show people.

Cathy Hackl, futurist, touched on the importance of keeping this technology in check in order to use it for good.

When were thinking tech, we dont only [think about] technology, adds Hackl. Were think also about the behavioral, the economic and the societal impacts that this technology is going to have.

Regardless of technological advances, human connection will still reign supreme, as nothing can be sold to a consumer without it. Whether its sports, entertainment, consumer products or something else entirely, that humanity will need to walk hand in hand with technology.

Reading and getting as much information as you can about whats going on in the world allows you to visualize what the next steps are and imagine a future thats not there [yet], says Leigh Steinberg, sports agent, Steinberg Sports. If youre willing to create enough space with another human being and as you move forward with the integration of this technology, youll have to integrate a lot of thoughts of bright people, but knowing how to get them to open up and express those is a real talent [that will still be needed].

In order to utilize entertainment technology for commercial growth, businesses will need to use the pandemic and its aftermath to create a happy medium of the in-person experiences we know and love with the virtual experiences we are growing accustomed to. Not only will this create the futuristic products that will bring in revenue, but it can change the world for the better in the long run, just as long as the humanity of the consumer is always put first

Astronomers Release Largest Map of the Universe in History – Futurism

New Matrix

After two decades of work, a giant team of astronomers unveiled their pice de rsistance: the most comprehensive map of the universe ever assembled.

The map spans back over 12 billion years into the history of the universe, CNET reports. To build it, astronomers relied on data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and analyzed more than 4 million galaxies and quasars. And in doing so, they may help settle a major debate in the astronomy community over how fast the universe is growing.

Will Percival, a researcher from Canadas University of Waterloo who worked on the map, called the project the complete story of the expansion of the universe in an SDSS press release.

A key part of that story happened about six billion years ago, according to the projects data. The map suggests that right around that point in time, the rate at which the universe was expanding accelerated rapidly.

The rate of the universes expansion, the Hubble Constant, is a touchy subject among astronomers: Theoretical calculations for the value have long disagreed with actual observations, puzzling experts. With this new map, the SDSS team believes they may have resolved that mismatch by determining that the universe actually sped up at a specific moment rather than expanding constantly.

Only with maps like ours, University of Oxford researcher Eva-Maria Mueller said in the release, can you actually say for sure that there is a mismatch in the Hubble Constant.

Clever Hackers Are Making ATMs Spit Out All Their Money – Futurism

Make It Rain

A major ATM sales and services company is warning that thieves have found a new way of jackpotting ATM machines causing them to spit out massive wads of cash, Ars Technica reports.

Jackpotting involves attaching rogue devices called black boxes to open up programming interfaces inside the ATM machines software and issue commands, forcing it to, proverbially, make it rain.

According to a statement issued by multinational banking solutions corporation Diebold Nixdorf, thieves have worked out a new way to get their hands of copious amounts of cash.

The hacks typically involve a combination of brute force and cyberattack savvy.

In the recent incidents, attackers are focusing on outdoor systems and are destroying parts of the fascia in order to gain physical access to the head compartment, reads the security alert. After getting inside of the ATM, the thieves hook up special USB devices, in order to trigger the banking machine to dispense money.

According to Diebold Nixdorf, the new scheme is mostly occurring in certain European countries, and appears to largely affect one common type of ATM machine.

Previous jackpotting approaches involved the use of black boxes that were even able to change the maximum amount a given ATM was authorized to spit out.

There is a silver lining to the latest hack, as Ars Technica points out. The thieves new approach doesnt seem to target the retrieval of personal banking information, as has been the case with previous schemes.

A new industry survey predicts homes that are smaller, smarter and healthier – Business of Home

What will homes look like in 2030? According to a new survey by the International Furnishings and Design Association, they will be smaller, smarter and healthier. The organizations Vision for the Future of Home survey came up with a number of predictions as to what trends will influence the way people live in the next decade.

The survey was last done in 2010, when IFDA members were asked to make predictions about the houses of 2020. The trends toward fewer rooms and the waning of the formal living and dining rooms, predicted 10 years ago, were highlighted again this year as hallmarks of the homes of 2030. Taken by 111 IFDA members, the questions for the survey were devised and sent out before COVID-19 took hold of the world, so the results dont address issues like whether the public health crisis will lead to a migration away from cities or other ways the pandemic might reshape the American home. But the survey respondents did predict a continued importance on indoor/outdoor spaces, which seems to have been hastened in the age of social distancing.

The 2010 survey also forecasted the domination of the smart home, something that hasnt quite taken holdat least, not in the way respondents predicted a decade ago. Looking forward, new respondents said that they expect the popularity of sensor- and voice-activated technology to continue to grow, but cited concerns over hacking and privacy. A similar observation was given to BOH this spring when we asked three futurists to predict what the homes of the 2030s would look like. I occasionally visit the home of an ultrawealthy person, and they absolutely dont want to live in Tony Starks homepartly because of data concerns and privacy, innovation consultant Piers Fawkes, founder and president of consumer research agency PSFK, told BOH. People now buy old Sonos speakers that dont have Alexa in them, just for privacy.

Survey respondents also indicated that wellness and aging-in-place are priorities. Ninety-six percent agreed that aging-in-place would be considered in any design plan of the future, though its a topic that many designers say is difficult and often awkward to bring up. In 2019, Erik Listou and Louie Delaware, the founders of the Living in Place Institute, which offers education and certification to design industry professionals, told BOH that the best approach to conversations around aging-in-place can be to not have them at all. They dont ask you whether or not you want safety features in your car, they just put them in, said Listou. Its not important to spend time trying to educate consumers. Lets just do it. Lets just make better, safer homes. Listou points out that considerations like the width of a door frame (which are often not built to the standard set by the Americans With Disabilities Act in residential settings) or how high to place outlets are easy but impactful choices designers and architects can make without consulting the client. Most houses in the country dont have the basic components of safety [that we need], he says. So, the simplest approach becomes, lets just make everything we do safe.

In the wellness category, respondents see the most likely growth in the bathroomsomething that Beatriz Sandoval, director of brand marketing for kitchen appliance brand Thermador, also predicts. Now more than ever, designers are looking to create customized rooms for focus and self-care for their clients, she told BOH. Whether thats a space to apply a face mask while enjoying a glass of wine, or stretching after a difficult day, a relaxing room to retreat to is essential. In recent years, product manufacturers have debuted bath fixtures that incorporate everything from aromatherapy and chromotherapy to a zero-gravity bathtub that relieves joint stress.

For the industry at large, the survey predicts an increase in the demand for virtual reality presentations and the number of clients ordering home goods online. But notably, the respondents did not foresee a growing demand for interior designers. Instead, they indicated that they thought the numbers would stay similar to what they are nowanother topic that could potentially be altered by the amount of time people are now spending in their homes.

Ultimately, the survey predicts that the home of 2030 will be largely similar to the home of 2020something that Brian David Johnson, the futurist-in-residence at Arizona State Universitys Center for Science and the Imagination, agrees with. The dirty secret is that in 10 years, homes are going to look a lot like they do today, he told BOH. Thats not a bad thing. Thats understanding that we as humans like things that are comfortable and have history. I tell my students that if you walk out your front door and it looks like it did on The Jetsons, thats a nightmare. We dont want our homes to change all that much.

New York Announces One of the World’s Largest Procurements for Offshore Wind and Onshore Renewable Energy Projects – JD Supra

On July 21, 2020, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced the largest combined clean energy solicitation ever issued in the United States, seeking up to 4 GW of renewable capacity. This capacity is broken up into 2500 MW of offshore wind and 1500 MW of onshore large-scale renewable energy projects.

Increasing Renewable Energy Investments in the United States

The United States remains one of the most attractive jurisdictions for renewable energy investments. It is the worlds biggest consumer of electricity and is now increasingly transitioning to renewable energy sources. It is a growing market with a stable regulatory environment and a transparent legal system and access to low cost of capital. The size and diversity of the United States also create numerous opportunities for various types of renewable energy projects.

The United States is ranked first in the EYs 2020 Renewable Energy Country Attractiveness Index. According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, a total of $55.5 billion was spent in the US renewables sector in 2019 alone (setting new investment records), an increase of 28%, second only to China and beating Europe.

Offshore Wind Solicitation

This is New Yorks second offshore wind solicitation; last years solicitation resulted in awards for projects of nearly 1700 MW in total capacity. The solicitation this year requires offshore wind generators to partner with any of the 11 prequalified New York ports to stage, construct key components, manufacture and coordinate operations and maintenance activities. New York is seeking at least 1000 MW of offshore capacity and will be accepting bids of between 400 MW and 2500 MW. New York will be providing $400 million in private and public funding to upgrade the states port infrastructure.

The timeline for the latest round of solicitations includes an online conference for bidders on August 12, 2020, followed by a September 23, 2020, deadline for notices of intent to propose and an October 20, 2020, deadline for the submission of proposals.

See more about the Offshore Wind solicitation here.

Onshore Renewables Solicitation

Governor Cuomo also announced that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) and the Power Authority of the State of New York (NYPA) will be running a coordinated solicitation to procure over 1500 MW of renewable energy. Projects selected in these solicitations will be fast-tracked to construction by seeking permitting through the new Office of Renewable Energy Siting.

NYSERDA SolicitationNYSERDA is seeking Tier 1 renewable energy projects with combined generation of 1.6 million MWh annually. Eligible projects must have entered operation after January 1, 2015, and must enter commercial operation by November 30, 2022 (or November 30, 2025 with extensions). NYSERDA will also allow proposers to leverage renewable energy credits (REC) via the Index REC contract structure for the first time.

NYSERDA will open the Step One Eligibility Application on August 5, 2020.

See more about the NYSERDA solicitation here.

NYPA SolicitationNYPA is seeking solar photovoltaic and wind projects (with an option to combine with energy storage) with combined generation of 2 million MWh annually. Eligible projects will be required to interconnect into New York state and have generation capacities of between 20 and 25 MW or 100 MW or larger. NYPA will be purchasing energy, capacity and RECs from the selected projects, which are expected to come online between 2021 and 2024. Winning bidders are expected to be notified in late 2020.

Quick Start guide to OneDrive in Microsoft 365 – OnMSFT

If youre looking to store your files online with your Microsoft 365 Business subscription, then OneDrive is where youll need to go. You likely already know it, but OneDrive is a cloud storage platform, where you can upload your businesss important files, view them across devices, and a lot more.

That said, getting started with OneDrive is easy. In this guide, well give you a basic tour and a look at what you need to know about OneDrive on the web. That includes a look at the OneDrive user interface, how you can create or upload files, download files, sync folders, and a lot more.

There are for core areas to OneDrive which you need to be aware of. Theres the left pane, the top pane, the information pane, and then your list of files. Each of these has a different purpose, and well dive deeper below.

Well be starting first with the left pane. Located on the side of the screen, here is where youll see toggles for the different functions in OneDrive. First, theyll be the My Filesoption to see all of your uploaded files. Youll also see a list of recent files or files youve shared. Then, theres the Discover section, to see popular and relevant files being shared across your company. Lastly, there is the recycle bin, where all your recycled files will go. Keep in mind, these files will remain there for 30 days until you choose to delete then. Well also mention shared libraries, too. If an admin has configured Teams, and Teams is in use in your business, a shared library is a location to store files for Microsoft Teams. All your files that are in Teams will appear here.

Moving along in our guide, at the top of the screen in OneDrive on your home page, youll notice some additional top-pane controls. These will change depending on which section of OneDrive youre in. On the main My Files page, which is where youll spend most of your time, there are a few controls to see here. Youll notice options to create a new document or folder, upload a file or folder, a button to initiate a sync of OneDrive, and another button to Automate tasks with Power Automate.

If you click a file, theyll also be controls to rename it, delete it, or download it. And, finally, youll see filter options to help you sort or change the view between a list, compact list, or tiles. Of course, there is a search bar, too, which will let you search for files, as powered by Microsoft Search and the Microsoft Graph.

Now comes the most important part, your list of files. When you see your list of files, itll be organized in one of three ways. It either can be as tiles, a list, or a compact list. You can change these by clicking the four squares at the top right of the screen. If youre having trouble finding a file, you also can configure the way you want to sort your files, too. You can sort by Type, Name, date modified, or size from the sort menu on the top.

Finally, were ending with the information pane. This pane only pops up once you click, or right-click on a file and then click the i in the right corner of the screen, or chooseDetailsfrom the right-click menu. Most times, youll get a preview of the file here, as well as a look at who the file has been shared with, and any activity on the file. You also can change access directly from this pane with themanage accesslink, and then choose who you want to share the file with.

Now that you get the basics, its time to look at how to create, upload files and folders. This task is easy. From theMy Filespage, click the + New button. Then, from the drop-down, choose a new document. This will open Office online, where you can create an Office document, and then save it to your OneDrive.

From this same menu, you also can create a folder. Just choose theFolderoption. Creating folders is a great way to keep files organized, without having to deal with filters. You can rename or delete folders at any time, too. Just click the folder, and choose your option.

Next, theres uploading files and folders. To do this, you can simply drag your file or folder into theMy Filessection of OneDrive. You also can choose it manually by clickingUploadin the top bar, and then pick a file or folder. A pop-out progress bar will let you know how things are going.

Capping off this section will be sharing files. This is the core of OneDrive, and it, too, is easy. To share a file or folder, just click on the folder or file. You should then see a Shareicon at the top of the screen. Click it to proceed. Atleritvley, you also can right-click and chooseShareas well. Once you do this, youll get a pop-up telling you to send a link. From here, you can specify permissions who you want to edit by choosing from a list, or you can enter an email or address. This will send the link on Outlook. As an alternate, you can also choose Copy Link to copy the link to your clipboard.

As we continue to explain OneDrive, well now get into downloading, copying, and opening files. These steps are pretty straight forward, too. Well start with downloading files. To download a file, just click it in the list, and then choose Download. You also can right-click and chooseDownload. From the same menus, youll also be able to copy the link to a file too, just choose Copy link option.

"Keeper Of Legends": Highway Plan Changed To Save 400-Year-Old Tree – NDTV

The 400-year-old tree was to be chopped for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway project.

A 400-year-old banyan tree that was in the centre of a protest against a highway project in Maharashtra's Sangli district will remain unharmed, Maharashtra minister Aaditya Thackeray announced in a tweet today.

Mr Thackeray said that the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has shelved plans to cutthe tree which was coming in the path of a road construction project. Instead the NHAI will realign the highway close to the tree, he said.

"The 400 year old banyan tree in Sangli district that we saved with a letter to @NHAI_Official. One can see the highway close to the tree. That, now will be realigned to save the tree. The tree is a keeper of legends, folklore and memories of many who played there as children," he tweeted.

The NHAI had planned to chop of the 400-year-old tree -- whose canopy is spread over 400 sq mt -- for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway project, triggering protests from environmentalists and villagers. The moments also saw activists gathering around the tree as a form of Chipko movement to protect it.

"The NHAI was preparing to cut off the tree for the Ratnagiri-Solapur highway project. We started Chipko movement while keeping social-distancing in mind to save the tree. Taking not of our movement, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray wrote to Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, who took note of this and instructed officials to not cut the tree," said Praveen Shinde, an environmental activist.

The movement saw residents sharing, uploading photos of the tree on social media in an attempt to show how wide the branches of the tree spread. Some of these videos featured monkeys and other species on its branches to highlight that large number of animals have made it their home.

This quantumly generated app Randonautica is a reality game thats terrifying its players – NME.com

Its pitch black the kind of darkness that presses down on you like a heavy, hot quilt as the torch flicks from side to side along the overgrown pathway. There is no street lighting here in the woods, no residual sun or moonlight, so each time the light falls away, the darkness gobbles everything the trees, the brush, the weeds, the rubbish up again.

When a group of intrepid explorers first set out, the air was thick with giggles and banter. Now, they speak in hushed, urgent tones as the camera first pans across the distant splash of red buried in the undergrowth. Someone off-camera says theres a fucking cross there, boys and someone else guffaws. Fuck off, the guffawer says, and the pair share a short, unhappy laugh.

The camera moves closer, twigs snapping beneath the weight of the cameraman, and you realise Unhappy Voice #1 was right; there is a cross there. It wasnt, however, the splash of red you spotted a few moments ago. Its crudely made just two pieces of snapped plywood inelegantly nailed together with Chinese symbols scribbled at the bottom with Sharpie. The writing on the horizontal plank is less distinct, but that doesnt matter really, because your eyes are instead drawn to the offering nailed onto the cross.

Its a cheap plastic doll, its face and limbs spray-painted red. Nails protrude from the dolls wispy scalp, ears and mouth like a knock-off Hellraiser toy with an inverted cross stamped onto its forehead. There are more symbols here a trident, a pound sign, a female gender symbol, I think? and the left arm is severed completely, the hand nailed to the backboard and clumsily reattached to the torso via a twig. Its extremities look charred.

After poking it with a stick for a bit, the team turn to walk back the way they came, breathless and a little hysterical. No-one really talks about what theyve seen, but just inches from the car theres a sound of a bottle smashing and all five of them yelp and frantically paw at the handles, telling each other to lock their doors once theyre in. As they speed away, their words overlap as every one of them swears to the other that no, they didnt throw any bottle. Honest.

Immediately, the cameraman pulls out his phone and opens the app that directed them to that doll in the first place. Randonautica an app that promises to take you on a journey of true randomness might be new to you, but its currently entertaining millions across social media, flooding YouTube and TikTok with the experiences of would-be Randonauts that caption their videos in block-caps and dire warnings. WARNING NEVER DOWNLOAD RANDONAUTICA, says one. RANDONAUTICA IS NO JOKE WE FOUND A CRIME SCENE AND THE POLICE CAME, screams another.

This pair of Randonauts were taken to an abandoned shopping mall where outside, they found a motionless body that they couldnt quite discern was alive or not. The same guy later took a flight cross-country where a different Randonautica adventure led him to a box in the Nevada desert that housed nothing but a China bell commemorating the doomed (and alarmingly topical) 1986 marriage of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson. DO NOT TRY THIS APP the video title sinisterly declares, although the Randonaut clearly doesnt value his own advice six of his last 10 videos are Rando-related.

A TikTok video, this one emblazoned with the legend please dont go randonauting, kicks off with a hysterical girl whose intention the word or phrase or emotion each player is asked to think of just as they boot up each mission was death. Weeping into the camera, she shares how shed stumbled upon a man lying in the gutter, his partner cradling him, bleeding from a gunshot wound inflicted by a drive-by shooting.

The developer states the app which is something of a mysterious Pokemon Go/Ouija board mash-up and listed as a simulation game on app stores has been downloaded 8million times and clocked up 400million views on TikTok.

Its been aided in no small part by the most infamous tale in Randonauticas annals in which players unwittingly followed coordinates to a washed-up suitcase that housed the grisly remains of not one but two dismembered corpses. Its probably not that surprising, then, that these kinds of coincidences are the ones clocking up the most views, encouraging some (read: many) content creators to leap onto the hype train with stories of their own.

In the very broadest sense, of course, the grave warnings are right Randonautica isnt safe. The random coordinates generated by the app can be anywhere at any time, and not only lead you to unsafe locations with unstable buildings, but they can lead you straight into a heap of trouble if you trespass, too.

Picking through abandoned trash is never recommended (please dont put yourself in a situation where you might accidentally stab yourself with a discarded needle), but even as the YouTubers heap warning upon warning in their intros dont play at night, dont play alone, dont be followed home they themselves are playing at night, playing alone and occasionally insist theyve been followed home, too.

Some theorise that the game uses your smartphones mic to hear intentions voiced aloud. Others intimate that given the app requires you to follow the coordinates on a map using GPS, this is how and why some players are being followed home. It doesnt seem to stop them playing and uploading it to the internet, though; Randonautica might be terrifying, but it seems to be terrifyingly lucrative, too.

The apps about page gives a spiel about pseudo and quantum entropy sources I remain unconvinced and players are asked to select a new location with an intention in mind. The results seem to vary wildly from stunning to the stunningly mundane, and we are, as humans, hardwired to seek out patterns and correlations where there are none.

Its clear the red-daubed plastic doll was not coincidental, though; either the lads themselves planted it or, admittedly less likely, a team working for the app did. Hidden in the weeds and at the end of a footpath as it was, theres no way I can accept its discovery was accidental.

I cant help but admit that Randonautica creeps me out in much the same way Ouija boards do. I can imagine it draws the same kind of ire and scepticism, too, with some maintaining its a harmless toy, and others professing it to be a dangerous tool of the occult.

I cant attest to its legitimacy because I dont know firsthand of anyone whos ever had a proper fright using it and I am much too much of a baby to try it myself (the fact that your GPS location is known to the app alone is enough of a deterrent). But like a lot of cheap, one-note horror games that clog up my YouTube subs page, I cant deny that its bloody good fun to watch.

While not all plastics are being recycled, even the ones that display the recycling sign, the global plastic waste problem is nowhere close to being resolved. Recycling, generally determined by factors like demand, legislations, and economy, takes on arguably around 20% of the annual production of plastics, leaving a large quantity unattended, doomed to last forever in our environment. In addition, competing with newly-produced materials, recycled plastics need to meet standards of quality and price, and undergo a sustainable, efficient, and economically viable transformation.

ROGP or Rejects of Glass & Plastics Technology is an innovative approach that repurposes plastics, once labeled as non-recyclable materials due to technical complexity or economy-related issues.

+ 13

Offering a solution that meets technical, environmental and economic requirements for sustainable use of all 80+ types of plastic waste, including mixed plastics, this particular ROGP technology recycles plastics (all 7 major plastic codes) and glass (all types of glass) into a durable and price competitive new material which has numerous applications, especially in the construction industry.

Current global challenges with existing recycling technologies include the impossibility to process mixed plastics due to their chemical composition, the need to segregate the materials and establish different recycling lines, the high energy consumption as well as the cost. Moreover, for glass, considered infinitely recyclable, low recycling rates are due to sorting difficulties, transportation obstacles, and expensive processes. On that note, ROGP, operated by Development Inc., is one single technology that can at the same time, recycle all 80+ types of plastics and all types of glass, and generate a composite from the rejects of glass and plastic.

The process builds on turning environmental liabilities into abundant resources, with a significant cost advantage over alternative materials. It requires no washing of plastics and glass; and it can handle all types of plastics, including mixed plastic waste and all types of glass, including mixed color and glass with impurities.

This efficient and low-cost recycling method has the ability to produce a multitude of end-products, from construction, infrastructure, piping, to urban furniture.Final outcomes are extremely diverse, especially that it can be molded into a variety of shapes and colors. Actually, specifications can be altered depending on the intended application. It can be used for tiles, speed bumps, parking stops, water pipes ducting, street furniture, waste sorting bins, building facade finishing, etc. Durable, flexible, strong, and with a relatively low production cost, this technology can also create a substitute for natural resources.

More key features of the technology include:

Positive Environnemental Impact

Low Production Cost

Mechanical properties
