Holidays That Might Have Been: Oceania Road Trip – Impact Magazine – Impact Magazine

Right now, I should be meeting my partner at Christchurch Airport to celebrate the end of my year abroad and 6 months apart to begin a mega trip across New Zealand, the east coast of Australia and Fiji.

Instead, the height of my lockdown has been sitting in a slightly broken, panic-bought hot tub that has only just managed to reach about 35 degrees. The plan was to spend six weeks in a campervan exploring these destinations; island hopping, hiking up mountains and kayaking. But then COVID-19 hit and ruined all of our plans. In March of 2020 the majority of us on exchange had to return to the UK with less than a moments notice.

There would have been bungee jumping, parasailing and kayaking but instead its Netflix, Netflix and maybe some Disney+ to spice things up

The first four weeks of our trip would have been exploring New Zealand, driving from Christchurch, across the South Island and to the tip of the North. Stopping to peer into Hobbit holes, dipping into thermal pools and spotting whales off the coast of Kaikoura. The South Island loop was definitely what I was most looking forward to, particularly revisiting Queenstown the adventure capital of the world as the first time I went I broke my wrist skiing on the bunny slope, how embarrassing! There would have been bungee jumping, parasailing, and kayaking but instead its Netflix, Netflix and maybe some Disney+ to spice things up!

Fiji was next on the agenda, a week on golden beaches and snorkelling. A relaxing little break before a continuation of the campervan trip, this time in the land of Oz. Driving from Sydney to Cairns in a 30-degree winter. Whilst lots of the walks across New South Wales were decimated by bushfires earlier on this year, there were so many still on my to-do list. There will be a next time Im sure!

Its not quite Sydney, Australia, but its Brighton Pier

Major FOMO is occurring right now, especially when all of my targeted ads are about the most amazing pictures of Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. From a selfish point of view, because everybody else is in the same situation I feel a little less bummed out about not being able to go. Its better to put it on hold until things return to normal rather than trying to go now and miss out on most of the fun because things are closed due to COVID-19.

Instead of adventuring this summer, Im spending it working down at the local pub and Im glad to be getting back to a bit of normality. Its not quite Sydney, Australia but its Brighton Pier and if you squint really hard, you may mistake them for the same thing.

NZ’s iconic Eden Park will be a new home for Oceania esports – FutureFive New Zealand

When you think of possible New Zealand locations for esports centres, would the major sporting stadium Eden Park come to mind? Yes, Eden Park famously home to physical sports like cricket, the Rugby World Cup and the All Blacks, will now be home to the Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre.

This centre will act as a hub for the Oceania esports community, with streaming practice rooms for teams to scrim and a broadcast area for live matches and commentary, alongside LAN areas for large scale events, and 5G and fibre capabilities.

Permanent streaming booths featuring the latest in broadcast technology will be available for local and visiting content creators to use, as well as chill out areas and space for the gaming and esports communities to host events and expand.

New Zealands national stadium is iconic and at the centre of many special memories for both Kiwis and tourists around the world. The Esports High Performance Centre will showcase Eden Parks ongoing ability to diversify, evolve, and be at the forefront of new technology, says Eden Parks CEO Nick Sautner.

The centre will also act as a training centre for esports stars like League of Legends team Dire Wolves. Dire Wolves has just revealed a huge expansion including rosters in EA Sports FIFA, Overwatch, NBA 2K, and VALORANT, professional practice spaces, stream booths and broadcast capabilities.

The Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre will also act as a community hub for gaming, hosting weekly leagues for groups such as the fighting game community Standing Fierce.

The Kiwi esports scene is an extremely passionate and vibrant one, and seeing our industry and community establish a new base in the home of New Zealand sport alongside titans of national culture such as the All Blacks and BLACKCAPS, is really exciting for us, says Standing Fierce community manager David Douglas.

The grassroots community in New Zealand has enormous potential, and having a venue like this, not just for our pro players to train, but to nurture and support local talent and fandoms, where we can hold events, network and exchange ideas will be hugely beneficial to the Oceanic scene.

Esports investment and advisory firm Guinevere Capital is backing the build. It has also been involved in launching esports centres at the United Kingdom's Twickenham Stadium and the Esports High Performance Centre in Australias historic Sydney Cricket Ground.

Guinevere Capital managing director David Harris says the Eden Park Esports High Performance Centre creates a melting pot of esports and gaming communities.

Whilst esports is a hugely modern industry which brings a new brand of athlete, setting up a facility like this in Eden Park, which holds immense legacy and cultural significance, feels fitting. Esports is going to be a huge part of New Zealands future, and were proud that we get to be a part of that.

The centre is expected to open sometime in Q3 (July-September) 2020.

By the numbers: ITRA’s report on trail running in 2020 – Canadian Running Magazine

The International Trail Running Association (ITRA) released its first infographic rundown of where the sport stands in 2020, looking at races from 2013 to 2019, and there are a lot of interesting statistics that off-road runners are going to be interested in seeing. From the number of racers and the volume of trail events worldwide to the ratio of men to women competing in the sport, the ITRA put plenty of information into this report. As much as we would like to dive into every stat, we cant, so weve picked a few of the numbers that interested us the most.

The report looked at five million individual results from more than 1.7 million runners (meaning there were quite a few repeat racers in the study pool) worldwide between 2013 and 2019. During that time, 77 per cent of racers were men, while 23 per cent were women. Trail running is very lopsided when it comes to the number of men versus women participants, but the percentage of female participants actually doubled from 2013 to 2019. In 2013, just 13 per cent of all trail race participants were women, but last year, that number was up to 26 per cent. Theres still a long way to go before men and women get anywhere close to equal representation in the sport, but theres no denying that trail running is slowly edging toward that.

RELATED: New study reports more female than male runners for the first time ever

Canada is among the top countries for female participation in trail events, with women making up 39 per cent of all runners. Were tied with Argentina for the third-highest percentage of women participants, sitting behind Finland (43 per cent) and Australia (41 per cent).

The ITRA Performance Index (PI) is used to evaluate the speed and level of different runners around the world, even if theyve never raced against one another. The scale has a maximum of 1,000 points, with a runners score corresponding to their results from every race theyve entered. The report broke down every continents average PI (looking at every runner from those regions), and its a tight race between Europe, North America and Oceania. European racers eked out a win for the top spot with a continental average PI of 443. North America is just behind at 442 and Oceania comes in at 438. Africa isnt too far behind in fourth at 408, and then South America and Asia come in fifth and sixth with PI scores of 393 and 362.

RELATED: Ultras produce the most obsessive runners

In the seven years that the ITRA surveyed, there were 25,700 trail races held around the world in 195 countries or self-governed regions. This is a massive number of races, meaning on average, there were more than 3,600 trail events held each year between 2013 and 2019. The ITRA report broke these races down into seven categories, ranging from XXS (the shortest and least difficult races) to XXL (the longest and hardest runs). On both ends of the spectrum, there were 200,000 or so participants who raced in around 1,000 events worldwide. These are presumably the 5K to 10K trail races on one end and the massive 200-milers (or longer) on the other.

What trail runners apparently prefer are the Small and Medium races, right in the middle of the spectrum. These events made up 54 per cent of all trail races between 2013 and 2019, and the same amount of finishers, 54 per cent, ran in these events.

Looting and the Ministry of Truth – LA Progressive

Dogs have six tails.

If this is an opinion someone wishes to hold, fine. If mental illness isnt playing a role in the formation of this opinion, fine. If this is an opinion someone wishes to broadcast publicly, I would then expect others to rebuke this individual. Dont call the police! And leave the shotgun where it is! But I would expect family and friends to see in the reality this person advocates something at best questionable.

Facts matter. Uninformed opinions is another matter.

Im sitting in the sunroom at the senior complex where I live when two white women enter and take seats. The space is too small for two to have a conversation while another reads or works at a computer. So I save my work and greet the two women. Im familiar with these two. As things go here in this building and in this small village located in Wisconsin, they are the nice ones, although one of the women informed me a week or so back that her masks were slow to deliverbecause of the protesters!

So here we are and its not long before the conversation really begins. Despite my presence!

Its about the looters. Those destroyers of property. And both women are looking at me, one directly and the other looking askance at me.

Perhaps its because of my presence!

These looters destroyed property.

Her friend still looking askance at me chimed in: And destroying property is wrong.

Neither women referred to George Floyd. Neither asked how I felt about this death. How I felt about the protesters. Black Lives Matter.

But there were Italians! Back in the day! The second woman volunteers a story about her struggling Italian family ending the narrative with a what about them? Huh?

All lives matter!

That would be racist, I tell her. Wouldnt it?

Your family of Italians became white at some point!

And now the first woman wants to offer me proof of those looters. She has video! On her cell phone! Actual footage of looters!

Democrats are paying these looters to destroy property! Blacks are being led by the nose by these democrats!

Here!

Shes trying to hand me her cell phone! She a nice one here. A friendly one. Someone, Im sure who would never think herself racist or anti-Black.

Im Black last I checked. And shes asking me in the second week of July to look at videos of looters!

I dont need to see your footage of looters. I think by now I know how to research on the Internet.

That didnt sit well with her. She has a son! And her son sent this footage of looters!

Wonderful!

Is it possible to inform her that her son might be living in a reality that doesnt recognize my humanity? Is it possible for me to ask her how did she raise this son to interact with people of color? Is it possible for me to ask why would she even be proud of a son who would send her footage of looters, as if to suggest that all the protesters, the Blacks and whites and Latinx and Indigenous protesters, are all looters controlled by Democrats?

And what reality do these two women live in if not one that denies the legitimacy of 400 years of systemic oppression and injustice suffered by Black, Indigenous, Latinx people in the US. Its not possible, however, to recognize how these two women actively engage in the crafting of a narrative that erases an historical events and replace it with a narrative that consists only of looters, claiming this then to be the truth, the only truth, and nothing but the truth.

For what happens to George Floyd? What happens to the protesters and their claims of injustice? Their claims of white supremacy?

Its hard to respond to such ignorance. Deliberate ignorance.

These radicals are dangerous.

Im a radical! (And thats what she wants to hear, isnt it?).

I could show you some sources for information

No, I dont need to do that. I have my son

Here are the Americans I decided long ago, after Trump took office, that I couldnt embrace because to do so would be to embrace ignorance, deliberate ignorance. White supremacy.

Racism was the elephant in that sun room, sitting among us.

Here are the people suspicious of reality as described by those who are Black, Latinx, and Indigenous. As a Black in America, I know that this form of suspicion might also point to a refusal to accept Black people as anything worthy of their attention. To do so, would be to acknowledge their responsibility in the history of conquest and enslavement.

Anti-Black is a symptom Trump shares with many white Americans. We are living in an America that cant accept the truthand that truth is that white America today is implicated in the maintenance of white supremacy.

Anti-Black is a symptom Trump shares with many white Americans. We are living in an America that cant accept the truthand that truth is that white America today is implicated in the maintenance of white supremacy. All pervasive and deep. Yet, despite the protests and Black Lives Matter movement, some Americans keep pointing to images of looters as if the 400 years of Americas worship of violence against Black Americans will disappear. Down a memory hole.

Since I refuse to nod in agreement with these two women, I refuse to accept their reality of looters, I refuse to subjugate myself for their benefit, Ill become their targetfor elimination. Its not over the top; its the reality Black Americans face in US. Theres the outright killing of Micheal Brown, Gorge Floyd, or Tamir Rice. And theres the day-to-day feeding of Black lives to a memory hole where we expelled from employment, housing, education. Many end up in prison or in sub-standard housing. Others still are subjected to their disappearance from family and society, relegated to homelessness.

I would have to pretend that I believed in the lies. And lies, Winston Smith understood, pass into history, and become truth. Who controls the pass, ran the Party slogan, controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.

No one does facts the way Big Brother does in Oceania. Asks Winston. He loves his job at the Ministry of Truth in the Records Department. He knows all about ideas and people disappearing. That is, ideas and people being vaporized. Staff at the Ministry of Truth are in love with that word. Vaporized. Adrift with Winston as he sits at his desk, working, we follow his thoughts as he recalls his parents. Vaporized. He knew others who were vaporized too.

No history, past, or present

His co-worker (over there), is a woman whose sole job is to remove the names of people, permanently. From existence.

No history, past or present

We are taken, in Winstons mind, to the print shops where experts skilled at faking photographs engage in the vaporizing operation too. And somewhere or other, quite anonymous, there were the directing brains who coordinated the whole effort and laid down the lines of policy which made it necessary that this fragment of the past should preserved, that one falsified, and the other rubbed out of existence.

Yes, Winston, too, vaporizes truth. Indirectly. But nonetheless.

His primary job isnt to reconstruct the past but, rather, to supply Oceania with newspapers, films, textbooks, telescreen programs, plays, novelsin other words, he is part of the system that produces what citizens are to think, so they dont have to think. If that makes sense! It should make sense; its not that so different from our current reality in 2020.

If in 1984 the Records Department supplies all forms of entertainment and more crucially information for its citizenry, why should we be surprised to find the presence of this phenomena already in reality?

Its not as if the world hasnt experienced deadly regimes that insisted that human beings negate the idea of freedom and subjugate themselves to enslavement. It shouldnt be a surprise that ignorance is sought after as a form of bliss and the use of the intellect is suspect. And warwar is more profitable we know than peace. What is peace if not the acknowledge that Black lives matter so then all lives could finally begin to matter?

The decision as to what to watch on telescreens, then, will be left to those who know! Leave the decision to the word of Big Brother! Just watch, listen, absorb.

The task of making life easy for fellow citizens rest with the staff at the Records Department in the Ministry of Truth. As for Wilson, he doesnt lie. The department doesnt lie. The department as an essential component of the Ministry of Truth is all about the truth. Not lies.

So the Records Department which produces news, films, and novels, produces truth, does a great service to humanity by eliminating lies. Fabrications. Thats Winstons job. However, in his present position he was invisible. He could stop and become lost in a monstrous world where he himself was the monster. Could it be possible that this Party, this system, this way of being endure forever? But what good would it do him to think. He was alone where the past was dead and the future unimaginable.

So Winston does his job. He sends what are damnable lies down wastepaper tubes nicknamed the memory holes. Forever forgotten. The past is history, obliterated.

In Records, then, dozens of citizens of Oceania work on the project of fabrication, that is, truth. One persons version of what Big Brother had actually said is selected and then that selection is subjected to re-editing and whats re-edited sets in motion the complex process of cross-referencing that would be required, and then the chosen lie would pass into the permanent records and become truth.

And everything change and does, Winston muses. A fact today is a lie tomorrow in Oceania.

Winston, today, works on the narrative he calls, Comrade Ogilvy. The Comrade doesnt exist. But in a few lines of print and a couple of faked photographs, thanks to that photo shop, Comrade Ogilvy will take on flesh! Winstons creation will breathe and live among humans. And Winston would have done this job for the glory and honor of Big Brother.

Speaking, then, in Big Brother speak, he announces the existence of Comrade Ogilvy, unimagined an hour ago. Comrade Ogilvy was now a fact.

Lies pass into history

Looters today, looters tomorrow, looters forever.

Memory holes proliferate, even while protesters are growing in numbers, unafraid to take to the streets, and taking upon themselves the right to effect change. The dissemination of memory holes continues, and we should expect the fearful and hateful will fight to the death to maintain all glory and honor to Robert E. Lee and the Confederacy. We should expect similar slits existing in thousands or tens of thousands throughout the building. In other words, an operation we see being played out in the removal of judges and legal departments who, in turn, are replaced by no-thinking machine men and women. Yes, men and women. Winston, without conscious. Doing the job of eliminating truth.

Because, at the end of the day, the truth is being looted.

Many of Americans dont see Oceania in America. They have been told to worry about what those protesters want to take away from them! They who worked so hard for generations! We are being robbed by those looters. Sowing division makes it so much easier for the sons and daughters still hard t work to vaporize the inconvenient reality of white violence.

Those with nothing will take everything from me!

Fox News is the altar on which the high priest, Trump, disseminates to sons and daughters the greatness of memory holes. Memory holes, then, is the god that is feed daily human beings to the point of sheer absurdity.

Vaporize, vaporize, vaporize.

We who protests are hearing the echo of generations of sheep behaving, as Winston notes in 1984, with paralyzing stupidity and imbecile enthusiasm.

I, a little like Winston, sat giving the time of day to people for whom America is white and always has been white. When I should have gathered by laptop and backpack and left the sunroom because embracing this brand of ignorance isnt an option. Truth is at stake like the climate is changing and global warming is melting to glaciers. The oceans are rising. The temperatures are rising.

The photo shops do a good job!

And so do the Winstons who see the memory hole coming for them but just keep on stepping on the neck of truth.

But, in the end, embracing the real looters, isnt an option. The real looters are losing their foothold on reality.

MIAMI, July 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --An FDA Safety Panel discussion will be held virtually by the American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians (AASCP) Aug.1-3, 2020, with guest speakerFDA Director Dr. Peter Marks. This is a highly anticipated session which will discuss the growing safety concerns of the industry.

The AASCP has recently created guidelines thatare current safety recommendations given to physicians who are using biologics in their medical practice. A highly anticipated and sought-after Safety StandardsPanel session will be hosted VIRTUALLY by AASCP on Aug. 1-3. 2020; guest of honor isDr. Peter Marks, FDA Director of CBER. The sessions normally are closed to the public but this particular SafetyStandard Panel discussion will be open and free to the public, covering the growing safety concerns of the industry.

The Safetypanel discussion will discuss advancements in development, manufacturing and delivery of safe and effective regenerative cell therapies through policy development, consensus and advocacy. The Safety Panel discussion willbringtogether experts and stakeholders to gain consensus on and advocate for policies that will advance the science and the field, including those focused on promoting clinical research, assuring the adoption of consensus standards to promote safety and quality, building capacity and expertise within the workforce, and establishing a national outcomes database to advance the science, promote improvements in quality and safety, and inform regulatory and patient decision-making.

According to AASCP, if physicians are using biologics in their practice, whether they are using SVF, PRP, bone marrow, UCB, amniotic products, exosomes, xenograftsor peptides, there are key considerations to take into account to achieve the best safety for their patients. The AASCP also recommends communication with the Chief Scientific Officer from the laboratory they work with. AASCP advises that just talking to a sales agent is not sufficient enough when determining the quality of products for their patients. Sales agents typically do not have a medical or scientific background.

The President for the AASCP, Dr. Martin Dayton, said earlier: "The American Academy of Stem Cell Physicians is a group of physicians, scientists and researchers who collectively represent the most authoritativenon-federal group advocating for guidelines and education on stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine. AASCP members are experts within all fields of stem cell therapy fromSVF, BM, UCB, Exosomes, Peptides, Xenografts, Allografts and Amniotic Fluids and are considered the most experienced leaders for proper advocacy in the field. The AASCP is involved directly with other authorities within the field and seeks only to bring knowledge and awareness for the ever-growing regenerative medicine industry. My hope is that the SafetyPanel discussion on Aug. 1-3, 2020, is to help get rid of the bad actors that are damaging the field for everyone."

‘Self-eating’ stem cell process may be the key to new regenerative therapies – Penn Today

The self-eating process in embryonic stem cells known as chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) and a related metabolite may serve as promising new therapeutic targets to repair or regenerate damaged cells and organs,Penn Medicineresearchers show in a new study published online inScience.

Human bodies contain more than 200 different types of specialized cells. All of them can be derived from embryonic stem (ES) cells, which relentlessly self-renew while retaining the ability to differentiate into any cell type in adult animals, a state known as pluripotency. Researchers have known that the cells metabolism plays a role in this process; however, it wasnt clear exactly how the cells internal wiring works to keep that state and ultimately decide stem cell fate.

The new preclinical study, for the first time, shows how the stem cells keeps CMA at low levels to promote that self-renewal, and when the stem cell is ready, it switches that suppression off to enhance CMA, among other activities, and differentiate into specialized cells.

Its an intriguing discovery in the field of stem cell biology and for researchers looking to develop therapies for tissue or organ regeneration, says senior authorXiaolu Yang, a professor of cancer biology at the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute in the Perelman School of Medicine. We reveal two novel ways to potentially manipulate the self-renewal and differentiation of stem cells: CMA and a metabolite, known as alpha-ketoglutarate, that is regulated by CMA. Rationally intervening or guiding these functions could be a powerful way to increase the efficiency of regenerative medicine approaches.

This story is by Melissa Moody. Read more at Penn Medicine News.

UAE hails success of first bone marrow transplant – The National

The UAE is celebrating the success of its first bone marrow transplant.

Typically used to treat patients with blood and cancer disorders , the landmark procedure was carried out on a patient with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer.

Cancer is the third-highest cause of death in the UAE. Patients seeking cell therapy and regenerative medicine often have to travel abroad for treatment.

News of the successful transplant, which was the result of collaboration between Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, represents a major breakthrough for cancer patients living in the UAE who can now seek treatment closer to home to remain with family.

The milestone announcement comes as the centre launched the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant programme on Monday.

"It fills us with great pride to be part of a first for the country and to make such a life-saving treatment available and accessible to those who need it here," said Dr Fatima Alkaabi, executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Bone Marrow Transplant programme.

"We are very grateful for the support and collaboration of SKMC in making this opportunity possible."

Bone marrow transplants are one of the most established stem cell-based therapies in the treatment of cancer, particularly blood cancers.

The unique procedure developed by the centre involved harvesting peripheral blood stem cells from the patient, who then underwent high-dose chemotherapy to eradicate all cancerous cells and most of the bone marrow.

The harvested stem cells were then infused back into the bloodstream, where they restore the destroyed cells and over the course of two weeks restart the production of healthy non-malignant blood cells.

"The patient is basically without an immune system while waiting for the transfused cells to take effect and must remain in isolation under the strictest infection control guidelines," said Dr Yendry Ventura, general manager of the stem cell centre and Abu Dhabi bone marrow transplant programme director.

"Since we are still in the midst of a global pandemic, we took additional precautions to ensure the best outcome possible for all involved."

Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre has been a driving force behind medical research in the country, including playing a key role in the ongoing fight against Covid-19.

Earlier last month, the team announced the results of the trial of its treatment for Covid-19 patients, branded UAECell19.

After opening in December, the centre has already received international press coverage over to its research into a treatment for the virus.

Their groundbreaking work has involved taking stem cells from a patients blood and returning them, via a nebuliser, as a fine mist to the lungs.

There they help regenerate lung cells and improve the body's immune response by preventing an overreaction to the infection that can damage healthy cells.

New Combination Therapy for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Shows Potential – Clinical OMICs News

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) develops in the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and throat. It is an aggressive life-threatening disease associated with high mortality rates, and accounts for more than 90% of the cancers of the head and neck.

PD1 blockade-based combination therapy has been approved as a first-line treatment for HNSCC. However, the response rate remains relatively low, and patients with HNSCC eventually relapse. Now scientists at the UCLA Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and UCLA School of Dentistry have revealed a potential new combination therapy to treat advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Using a mouse model, researchers found that using an anti-PD1 immunotherapy drug in combination with PTC209, an inhibitor that targets the protein BMI1, successfully stopped the growth and spread of the cancer, prevented reoccurrences, and eliminated cancer stem cells.

Their findings, BMI1 Inhibition Eliminates Residual Cancer Stem Cells after PD1 Blockade and Activates Antitumor Immunity to Prevent Metastasis and Relapse, is published inCell Stem Cell.

PD1 blockade combined with chemotherapy has been approved for recurrent or metastatic head and neck cancer. However, response rates remain low and response duration is suggesting that this type of cancer might be resistant to PD1 blockade.

The researchers sought to overcome the resistance and had been studying the role of cancer stem cells and the protein BMI1. BMI1, a polycomb group (PcG) protein, plays a critical role in epigenetic regulation of cell differentiation and proliferation, and cancer stem cell self-renewal.

The researchers used a mouse model of HNSCC that mimicked human cancer development and metastasis, allowing them to perform lineage tracing of BMI1-positive cancer stem cells in an undisturbed tumor immune microenvironment. Then they tested whether BMI1 cancer stem cells could be eliminated by PD1 blockade-based combination therapy using both pharmacological and genetic inhibition of BMI1.

Here, we show that the combination treatment of anti-PD1 and cisplatin enriched BMI1+ CSCs in HNSCC while inhibiting HNSCC growth. In contrast, the pharmacological and genetic inhibition of BMI1 eliminated BMI1+ CSCs and enabled PD1 blockade therapy, resulting in the inhibition of metastatic HNSCC and prevention of HNSCC relapses, the researchers wrote.

BMI1 inhibition induced tumor cell-intrinsic immune responses by recruiting and activating CD8+T cells along with eliminating BMI1 and cancer stem cells.

This is the first preclinical study to provide evidence that targeting BMI1 proteins enhances immunotherapy and eliminates cancer stem cells by activating antitumor immunity. This discovery holds promise for those with advanced head and neck cancers who are treated with PD1 blockade, but later become resistant to therapy.

The Governor of the State of Hidalgo, Omar Fayad Meneses, announced that through the use of mesenchymal stem cells and exosomes, 26 Hidalguenses who were severe with COVID-19 managed to recover.

This as part of a study carried out by the state government in collaboration with that of Japan, according to the newspaper El Universal. Thirty patients participated in the project, who received an innovative biotechnological therapy to treat COVID-19. They were all in serious condition, but 26 of them managed to recover as a result of the treatment.

The agreement to carry out these activities was agreed on June 13 at a meeting between the Hidalgo administration and the International Association of Cell Therapy for the New Coronavrius (IACT4C).

In presenting the results, the Governor thanked the doctor Tetsuya Fujimori and the researchers, Alex Iryiz and Sergio Alva for having been part of the project.

He assured that based on these promising results, we will seek approval in Hidalgo for this revolutionary treatment for COVID-19. In the same direction, it was reported that an authorization would be requested to make a stem cell processing center that will have a high-level technology called Prometheus.

Mexico has positioned itself in fifth place in Latin America and 13th worldwide. (Photo: . / Edgard Garrido)

Currently, the study is in its second phase, in which it is controlled and analyzes the safety and efficacy of the use of exosomes and human mesenchymal cells intravenously applied.

The Mexican media reported that the treatment was applied to patients who suffered Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome because of COVID-19.

The president reiterated his willingness to continue collaborating with the Japanese government and that a positive aspect of the crisis is that closer ties between countries so far away are achieved.

The governor also used his Twitter account to report that to date there are 6,467 confirmed cases of COVID-19, in addition to 1,003 deaths. There are also 1,282 recovered cases and 1,282 recovered patients.

These are part of the 44,876 deaths and 402,876 confirmed cases accumulated nationwide until the 58th day of the so-called new normality. Likewise, 449,854 negative cases, 87,538 suspects and 261,457 recovered patients have been counted.

To address the pandemic, the government received on July 28, 20 ventilators for intensive care. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) explained that the arrival of the fans was the result of cooperation between the governments of Mexico and the United States and of the conversation between the presidents. Andrs Manuel Lpez Obrador and Donald Trump on April 17, where the acquisition of equipment from that country was agreed.

In the new revisions to the CBSE political science curriculum, an ode to the BJP – Scroll.in

For decades, school curricula, especially textbooks produced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, have been a political battleground for conflicting ideas of India. But in the latest round of revisions, parts of the political science curriculum for Class 12 students under the Central Board of Secondary Education have been burnished into an ode to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

In the new NCERT textbooks, the decision to strip Jammu and Kashmir of special status on August 5, 2019, is cast as an achievement of the current government. It followed years of unstable coalition governments, major acts of terrorism as well as mounting internal and external tensions, students will read. It was made possible after the Bharatiya Janata Party walked out of the coalition government presided over by Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti the text spells her name wrong. The partition of Jammu and Kashmir into two separate Union Territories, the textbook says, fulfilled the divergent political and developmental aspirations of the region. Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh are described as living examples of society in India. A section on different kinds of separatist politics in Jammu and Kashmir has been excised from the new edition of the NCERT textbooks.

The Central Board of Secondary Education also recommends supplementary reading which features most of the BJPs favoured slogans. Students will be told there was a clarion call among political circles to remove special status, which stood against the principle of Ek Vidhan, Ek Nishan, Ek Pradhan referring to one Constitution, one Flag and one Head of the State/Government respectively. They will be told that after 2014, there was a shift from caste and religion based politics to development and governance oriented politics under the slogan of Sab ka saath, sab ka vikaas, everyones support, everyones development. After five years of stellar performance, the material reportedly suggests, this has graduated to sabka saath, sabka vikaas, sabka vishwaas, everyones support, everyones development, everyones trust.

The 2014 elections certainly meant a decisive shift away from the Nehruvian era of textbooks. Since its inception in 1961, the NCERT has been seen as an institution that reflected the establishment worldview, even though it was meant to be an autonomous body. Generations were shaped by its textbooks, which came with a Nehruvian wash, speaking of secularism, rationalism, scientific inquiry. This was challenged every time there was a change in government at the Centre. From the Janata Party in the 1970s to the first National Democratic Alliance government in the early 2000s, the Hindu Right used the texts to address its historical sense of wrong, emphasising cultural nationalism and Hindu traditions. Much has been written about former Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshis saffronisation of textbooks under the first BJP government.

But the last six years have seen an unprecedented onslaught on the social sciences as they have been taught for so long. Chapters on clothing and caste conflict were dropped. So was material on peasants and farmers. Historic battles were to be rewritten and Hindu nationalist icons introduced into the curriculum. A few weeks ago, chapters on secularism were dropped, apparently to lighten the load for students. These incremental changes have culminated in the ringing endorsement of the ruling party evident in the new curriculum.

The political tussles over the social sciences have resulted in a larger loss the loss in real knowledge about our past and our present. Much has been excised from record in the current curriculum, for instance. Deleted: the mass arrests and the communications blockade that was imposed on Kashmiris before the August 5 decision was sprung on them. Deleted: the objections raised by several Opposition parties and the complete gag on political activity in Kashmir. Deleted: the widespread support for separatism, the persistence of militancy and a year of bloodshed in Kashmir. Deleted: the BJPs hate-filled campaign speeches, deployed judiciously when vikaas was not enough to win votes. Deleted: the lynchings and violence directed at minorities, the attempt to recast citizenship so that it reflected the BJPs worldview of India as a natural home for Hindus, not a secular country.

Perhaps the BJP hopes that, once these facts are lost, it will have won the battle against history itself.

Epic 14-year road trip stalled in South America – CNN

(CNN) For 14 years, nothing could stop road warriors Karen Catchpole and Eric Mohl. The New York couple with a bad case of wanderlust had rattled in their trusty Silverado from the top of the Western Hemisphere in Alaska to the bottom of South America and a host of places in between on an epic road trip.

They were in the vast wilderness of Patagonia in western Argentina when the microscopic kibosh came down: Covid-19.

The World Health Organization declared the novel coronavirus was a pandemic. Argentina quickly closed its borders. There were no flights out. "We were locked down like everyone else here," says Catchpole.

As veteran travelers, they were used to roadblocks and things not going as planned, but this was not the normal detour. With travel shut down for who knows how long, should they pack it up and go home?

They decided to hunker down in a good place to be in a pandemic, the wine district of Mendoza in western Argentina in the foothills of the Andes, where they had a longstanding invite to house- and pet-sit for a friend.

Eric Mohl and Karen Catchpole have paused their 14-year, trans-Americas road trip.

Eric Mohl

"From the beginning, we felt safe here," says Catchpole. "Argentina's reaction to the pandemic was one of the most serious quarantines in the world. Social distancing was enforced in supermarkets and pharmacies, where only a few customers were allowed in at a time, and no children were allowed at all. Soon shopping for food or medicine was restricted to specific days of the week based on your ID number. Masks were mandatory."

Argentina has fared better than its neighbors Chile and Brazil in managing the virus, although cases recently have been spiking. Argentina had about 167,000 cases (376 per 100,000 people) and 3,000 deaths (7 per 100,000 people) by the end of July.

In Brazil, there were about 2.4 million infections (1,166 per 100,000 people) by the end of July and about 88,000 deaths (42 per 100,000 people). Chile had nearly 350,000 cases (1,868 per 100,000 people) by the end of July and more than 9,000 deaths (49 per 100,000 people).

Still living their dream

Their travels are their job as well, as they file freelance pieces on their discoveries along the expedition. They are working on stories from places they have already visited, as they wait for the a safer time to get back on the road.

Catchpole, a former editor and writer for Cond Nast, and Mohl, an attorney who wanted to be a photographer, support their adventures by filing stories for publications and websites around the world. "We are living our dream, but we spend 60% of our time working," says Catchpole.

The couple's travels have included scenic alpaca encounters in the Andes of Peru.

Eric Mohl

As the pandemic hit, the couple was returning from one of their most expansive "field offices," Patagonia, the massive realm of wilderness, mountains, middle-of-nowhere ranches and ice that sprawls 402,000 square miles across the lower half of Chile and Argentina.

"Patagonia was so stunning -- just amazing mountains, glaciers. We saw four different pumas!" says Mohl.

"That never happens," chimes in Catchpole. "Most people who live in Patagonia have never seen a puma."

It was one of those moments Catchpole and Mohl live and travel for, one of the stumble-upon happenings that leaves you in thrall to the wonder in your world. The vistas of glacial ice-calving, towering peaks and the natural world in Patagonia so overwhelmed the senses they could hardly take it all in.

"By the time we left, we could not absorb any more of the amazing intensity," recalls Mohl.

An ambitious itinerary, exponentially extended

They got hooked on long-haul travel when they backpacked around Southeast Asia for four years in the late 1990s, trekking in Borneo and the Himalayas. It was the dawning of the Internet caf age.

As an editor and journalist, Catchpole had helped create Sassy and Jane magazines for Cond Nast. What if she could write about their travels and Eric could photograph them, and they could post from the road? They sold a few stories to travel magazines, and the seed was planted.

They went back home to work, saved money, and eventually developed a plan for a three-year trip through the Americas. "From Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, we're all Americans," says Mohl. The mission of their Trans-Americas Journey was to understand their own backyard and neighbors better. They set out in 2006.

Since then, they have racked up 220,000 miles, 17 nations and 14 flat tires. They have driven the equivalent of nine times around the world in their mud-specked Silverado. The three-year journey turned into 14 and counting.

Mount Fitzroy in Argentina's Patagonia region is another stunning landscape along their meandering route.

Eric Mohl

They have bumped down potholed roads in Guatemala, crunched across salt flats in Bolivia and slalomed through jungle terrain in Ecuador and Brazil. On a long jaunt to the border of Peru and Bolivia, two tires split apart.

"We were headed to the border because our visas were about to expire along with the Temporary Importation Permit for our truck," recalls Catchpole. "And Peru is very serious about not overstaying. The country actually has the right to confiscate your vehicle if you overstay. We had two tires delaminate (break apart from their casing), so we couldn't get to the border in time."

Border agents didn't buy their story about mechanical issues even though they had a date/time stamped photo of a local policeman helping them with the tire. With visions of being stranded without wheels, they found an ally, a local Chevy dealer, who stepped in and resolved the issue with the police.

It was just one of many times complete strangers would go out of their way to help them in a crunch.

'Having time to let it all happen is key'

Getting beyond the surface of tourism and making a connection with local people is their goal, and their strategy to do that is slow travel. Lingering is the builder of conversations and friendships and director of serendipities that are missed when we rush through a place.

Catchpole recommends talking to your restaurant server and other locals about the town you're in. "If you go through a place quickly, it will wind up like your preconceived notion of it. Having time to let it all happen is key."

Their travels have taught them to stay open, and when someone invites them to a place in a direction they are not going, they say yes.

The pair attended the annual Chacu festival in Peru during which wild vicuna are rounded up to be sheared.

Eric Mohl

Using the common sense we use to avoid trouble in a big American city, they say they have never been mugged or felt afraid. They had a stove and cooler pinched at a campground in Guatemala, but locals got everything back before breakfast.

Their in-depth approach has led them to a trove of immersive experiences. In Peru, they visited the annual Chacu festival, which features the traditional vicuna roundup. Vicunas are part of the llama and alpaca family except sleeker -- "the super-model version," says Catchpole.

She and Mohl were invited by locals to see this ancient ritual.

"Dozens of people fan out into the vicuna's range, all holding on to a very, very long rope with small flags and bits of fabric," Catchpole explains. "They stretch the rope and walk slowly behind groups of vicuna to herd them in the direction of a temporary holding pen."

There the locals perform a traditional Incan ceremony and then shear each animal, whose coats are used for expensive clothing and blankets. "The day was full of fascinating moments, including the chance to see the vicuna up close and see a not-for-tourists Incan ritual," she notes.

Experiencing the kindness of strangers

They've roved many places -- from the looming staircase temples of the Mayan city of Copan, Honduras, to culinary finds, such as Restaurante El Chato in Bogota, Colombia. They've found the relatively undiscovered tropical beach haven of Puerto Viejo in Costa Rica and ridden the old Patagonian Express train in Argentina. One of the highlights was the city of Zacatecas, in the highlands of Mexico -- "like Europe in our backyard, 12 hours from Texas."

The time the couple spends getting to know their surroundings allows them to uncover destinations not on the usual tourist map, such as Bonito, a town on the edge of the Pantanal wetlands in southwestern Brazil, with crystal-clear spring waters and waterfalls. It's like swimming in an aquarium.

While in Bonito, Catchpole started to have pain in her abdomen. The owner of the small hotel they were staying at, Maria Pires, of the Pousada Galeria Artes, went with them to a local clinic, since they didn't speak Portuguese, the language of Brazil, only Spanish (present tense only).

Car trouble comes in inconvenient locations such as a salt flat in Peru.

Eric Mohl

The doctor didn't think it was appendicitis, but Maria didn't buy it.

"She contacted a professor of surgery four hours away who told us to go there immediately," says Catchpole. "Maria left her hotel and came with us. We found out it was appendicitis, and she stayed with us through the surgery in the operating room."

"Stuff like this happens all the time. We have been very lucky to meet people who go way out of their way to help us," says Catchpole.

What does the future hold for Catchpole and Mohl? They have taken a financial hit along with the whole travel industry. Ad dollars that support publications have dried up and resulted in slashed budgets for travel stories.

They think they might go to Paraguay or Uruguay next, where the virus has not rampaged. They have more questions than answers about what pandemic travel might look like.

Their style of travel will have to adapt to a new tourism, which includes things such as wearing masks.

"For us, as non-native Spanish speakers, masks are making it harder to converse well in Spanish. The masks muffle the voice and conceal facial expressions. It's hard to make a connection as a stranger with a mask on," says Catchpole.

"We really miss seeing people's smiling faces, since that's an element of travel that adds so much to every interaction."

It's a long, strange trip ahead for us all.

The Galapagos draws visitors with its amazing diversity of wildlife -- including the blue-footed boobie.

Instead of the Inca Trail in Peru, try the Ausangate trek -- more beauty, more mountains and fewer people.

In Argentina, the northern wine region of Cafayate and the provincial capital, Salta, has wineries, gauchos, culture and great food in some of the most gorgeous natural beauty in the country.

The Amazon basin in Ecuador around Cuyabeno wins for animal sightings, fewer people and much lower prices than the most accessible Amazon regions.

The Pantanal region of Brazil is where you have the greatest chance of seeing a jaguar in the wild, plus macaws, anteaters, capybaras and many more.

Travel: Trekking above the world on Mount Roberts – Kamloops This Week

Its a cloudless day and I feel like Im in a sauna instead of on a hiking trail.

My thighs feel like Silly Putty, Im panting like an old mare and Im regretting having had that second helping at the breakfast buffet.

But I continue to plod upward, toward the craggy peak, where a stunning panorama will be my reward.

Hiking boots werent included when I packed my bags for this Alaska cruise, but they sure would have come in handy while hoofing the hills of Juneau.

Mount Roberts towers like a sentinel over the states capital city and is just one of the many scenic stops we make during this fabulous seven-day excursion.

This view takes my breath away, I gasp, while trekking along the well trodden route.

Although the landlocked city and sliver-thin Lynn Canal sprawls far below, I can hardly blame my huffing and puffing on the ascent.

The vertical gain by my Nikes has only been 325 metres.

Access to the surrounding 160 kilometres of groomed trails has been made easy with the convenient tram ride that has whisked us from sea level to mid mark in under five minutes.

At the top, theres a restaurant, gift store and Chilkat Theatre where a half-hour award-winning flick, Seeing the Daylight, provides an overview of history and the Tlingit (thling-get) people.

Local artists and actors are often on stage here as well.

Whether its sharing a story or carving a totem pole, a piece of the past comes alive through their gifts.

Instead of retracing the steps of time, we check out the pathways of the present. We wind through the montane forest, a zone choked with small hemlock and spruce, then elevate to the sub-alpine, carpeted with wildflowers.

Flaming fireweed and salmon-berries thrive next to herbal blends and perennials. There are alpine azalea, ground-hugging blueberries and even some corn lily, a medicinal plant thats used in the treatment of asthma.

I wonder how effective it is as I wheeze on by.

The vegetative landscape not only creates a pretty picture, but is also a popular picnic ground for forest habitants.

Our dusty byway is pocketed by protective burrows where hoary marmots hide out. Although none are showing their grizzled faces today, a few are serenading us with their

shrilling call.

Panoramas are interspersed along the way. Check out our cruise ship, I comment, while taking time to catch my breath on one of the lookout platforms.

Our floating hotel in the silt-laden aquamarine waters below looks no larger than a Tinkertoy.

The adjacent downtown core of Juneau is also dwarfed while nestling between the Gastineau Channel and lush Tongass National Forest.

Its hard to believe that just an hour ago wed been sauntering along the citys colourful streets, picking up souvenirs and peering into popular attractions.

While ogling over St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church (1897) and the Red Dog Saloon, a popular gold rush watering hole, other cruise passengers were opting for adventure tours.

The Mendenhall Glacier, just a few miles from town, is one of the states top attractions.

The impressive translucent blue mass cloaks the gouged out valley and is conveniently close to viewpoints and an information center.

Icebergs that calve away from the glacial spectacle float ominously on Mendenhall Lake like chunks of styrofoam. Spawning salmon swim wildly up the adjacent Steep Creek.

From protective boardwalks visitors can check out a few bears enjoying their daily catch.

Our footpath traverses the steep mountainside, bisects thickets of low-lying alder, and shares expansive mountain vistas from every angle.

I stop on a sturdy bluff to drink in the beauty and slow my respirations. Granite peaks create the scenic backdrop to flower-laden meadows. Their riveted craggy faces are dotted with glacial remains and fringed with evergreens.

On the far hillside are more hiking pathways that have been carved into the verdant thickets.

My husband Brent trys to convince me for one my venture but Ive had enough trekking for one day.

I check my watch and glance down toward the ship.

With any luck Ill get back to our luxury liner in time for lunch.

35 Best And Worst Countries To Raise A Family (You Wont Believe Americas Ranking) – Forbes

As if things couldnt get worse. According to a new study from the travel website Asher & Lyric, the United States is the second worst place in the world to raise a family. The country came in at a shockingly low 34th place out of 35 countries, only beating out crime-ridden Mexico. Topping the list of best places to raise a family were countries like Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland (which was recently named the happiest country in the world for the third year in a row).

READ MORE:Want To Escape From America? 12 Countries Where You Can Buy Citizenship (And A Second Passport)

This study has been eye-opening for me, says Los Angeles-based journalist Lyric Fergusson, who runs the site with her husband Asher and is a mother of two. Even as a well educated, thoughtful individual,I had become so numb to the countrys inadequacies that I must have simply disregarded my personal experience for the rhetoric of the nation.

In a new study, the US was named the second-worst place in the world to raise a family.

The husband-wife journalistswho are known for mapping out data-driven travel lists like the most dangerous places for women travelers and the most dangerous places for gay travelerscreated the Raising a Family Index torank 35 countries that are part of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). We only used OECD countries because they have reliable data in a wide range of key topics useful for this study, notes Fergusson.

To rank the most and least family-friendly countries, the journalists looked at 30 critical statistics from trusted international sources broken down into six categories that identify favorable conditions for raising a family, including safety, happiness, cost, health, education and time.

The best country in the world in the Raising a Family Index:Iceland, which was also the safest country in the world and number four when it came to cost. (Sweden was the best priced country to raise a family.) Iceland achieved top-10 rankings in all categories and was number one in safety, says Fergusson, who points out that Iceland is also a world leader in human rights. No matter the origins of a child or who they turn out to be, Icelands constitution ensures they will be treated unequivocally as an equal.

Iceland was named the best country to raise a family.

Mexico came in at the bottom of the list as the worst country to raise a family. The country ranked poorly in categories like safety (it was the most dangerous in the world), health (the worst), education (also the worst) and happiness (the fifth least happy country).

But the United States didnt fare much better, coming in at the bottom of the list at number 34, barely above Mexico. Fergusson says that she was surprised by the results and couldnt believe what she saw when she reviewed the data. I went one-by-one into each of the six categories, she says. What I discovered, in many instances, was quite shocking.

Safety severely impacted the United Statess ranking. According to the data, it was the second-worst after Mexico. The US has 6.12 reported homicides per 100,000 (bested only by Mexico), whereas most countries on our list are around one or less, says Fergusson.

The US also scored poorly in the human rights category, coming in at fourth worst. Our systemic racism is just one example, which has been recently exposed during the Black Lives Matter protests, says Fergusson. It has become strikingly clear that people of color do not feel safe in America.

Cost was another contributing factor. The US gets an F in our cost section, says Fergusson. In the overall cost index, the US placed last, performing twice as poorly as New Zealand, which finished just ahead of the US. Parents with average household income have to spend31.79% of their income on childcare costsalone, says Fergusson. Compare that to Scandinavian countries, where households only have to spend 4% to 10% of household income to raise a well-rounded child.

One shocking fact that the journalists uncovered: American mothers are twice as likely to die in childbirth here as in Canadaeven though it will cost us three times as much for a standard hospital birth, says Fergusson.

Also sobering: America ranked worst for time. Americans work very long hours per year with zero government-mandated paid maternity, paternity, sick leave or vacation time, says Fergusson. No other country in our study gives zero paid maternity leave or zero paid vacation time.

The US also ranked poorly in happiness: The journalists point out that one in five Americans suffer from mental health issues each year and the suicide rate has increased by 33% between 1999 to 2017. And the country ranked poorly in education (its the 12th worst country) and health (its the eighth worst country).

Fergusson says that the study led her to the conclusion that America is a deeply challenged and troubled countrybut she has hope. My aspiration is that something will substantially change in my childrens lifetime.

In a new study, the US was named the second-worst place in the world to raise a family.

AQLI: new data reveals little progress globally in reducing air pollution over the last two decades – Green Car Congress

Particulate air pollution continues to cut global life expectancy by nearly two years as progress in some countries counterbalances worsening air quality in others, according to the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI).

Produced by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC), the AQLI is based on frontier research by EPICs director Michael Greenstone that quantified the causal relationship between human exposure to air pollution and reduced life expectancy.

New data from the Air Quality Life Index (AQLI), which converts particulate air pollution into its impact on life expectancy, shows that particulate pollution was the greatest risk to human health before COVID-19. Without strong and sustained public policy, it will be after COVID-19.

The analysis finds that particulate pollution cuts global life expectancy by nearly two years, relative to what it would be if air quality met the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline. This has consistently been the case over the last two decades, with the average global decline in life expectancy from pollution remaining at two years as improvements in some countries like China were balanced out by worsening conditions in other countries.

Particulate pollution has a more devastating impact on life expectancy than communicable diseases such as tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS, behavioral killers such as cigarette smoking, and even war, AQLI asserts.

Source: AQLI Annual Update 2020

In areas of Central and West Africa where diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria traditionally grab headlines, particulate pollution poses just as serious a health threat having a comparable impact on life expectancy. With growth in coal consumption in Africa over the next two decades projected to be triple what it was in the past two decades, recognizing particulate pollution as a possible growing problem becomes even more important.

Nearly a quarter of the global population lives in four countries in South Asia that are among the worlds most polluted: Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan. People living in these countries could see their lives cut short by 5 years on average, after being exposed to pollution levels that are now 44% higher than they were two decades ago. High pollution across the entirety of Bangladesh makes it the most polluted country in the world. The most severe pollution, however, is found in parts of India, especially northern India, including the megacities of Delhi and Kolkata.

Particulate pollution is also a significant concern in Southeast Asia, where traditional pollution sources such as vehicles, powerplants and industry combine with forest and cropland fires to produce deadly concentrations. As a result, 89% of Southeast Asias 650 million people live in areas where particulate pollution exceeds the WHO guideline. Growing metropolisessuch as Jakarta, Singapore, Ho Chi Minh, and Bangkokbear the greatest burden.

The good news is that there is now a track record of countries deciding to take action and succeeding in cleaning the air.

Michael Greenstone

China began a war against pollution in 2013. Since then, three-quarters of the worlds reductions in pollution have come from China. The country has reduced particulate pollution by nearly 40%. If these reductions are sustained, Chinese citizens can expect to live about 2 years longer than they would have prior to their aggressive reforms.

The United States, Europe and Japan have likewise experienced success in reducing pollution due to strong policies that came on the heels of public calls for change. The progression of their success, however, further highlights the scale and speed of Chinas progress. It took several decades and recessions for the United States and Europe to achieve the same pollution reductions that China accomplished in 5 years, while continuing to grow its economy. Even with this progress, there are still parts of the United States, Europe, Japan, and most especially China, where pollution meaningfully compromises human health.

As countries today try to balance the dual goals of economic growth and environmental quality, the historical lesson from around the world is that policy can reduce air pollution in a wide variety of political contexts. The AQLI makes clear that the benefits are measured in longer and healthier lives.

tZERO Updates on Platform Progress – Crowdfund Insider

tZERO CEO Saum Noursalehi has published an update on progress pertaining to the digital security platform.

tZERO is part of Overstock (NASDAQ:OSTK), a company that has recently experienced a solid increase in its share price since the beginning of the year. Overstock is scheduled to release earnings tomorrow (July 30) before the market opens. The company has scheduled a conference call and webcast for 8:30 a.m. ET.

In a Dear Investors letter, Noursalehi said the value of their blockchain-based ecosystem is becoming increasingly relevant as companies remain private longer, while their investors have limited options for secondary liquidity.

Noursalehi said that tZEROs Alternative Trading System (ATS) is currently transacting hundreds of thousands of trades each monthe and growing rapidly.

While this volume may be a fraction of what is transacted in the traditional world, it is a major and positive trend in our growing ecosystem. This platform allows retail investors the ability to invest in these exclusive assets and offers issuers the opportunity to provide valuable liquidity to their existing shareholders. We believe tZERO is the solution to democratize access to private markets, said Noursalehi.

Noursalehi claims that tZERO facilitates 95% of security token trade volume today.

Noursalehi says that tZEROs cash burn rate is down as cost reductions have kicked in and the company continues to execute on its roadmap.

Key objectives going forward include trading new issuers on the ATS, integrate more brokers, while integrating primary issuance platforms and more. He believes that the biggest near term opportunity is in the real estate sector and pre-IPO companies. Noursalehi says that companies looking to raise capital is an opportunity they have shifted their focus to existing digital securities.

There are over 200 companies and/or assets that have been tokenized to-date. Many of these assets do not meet the criteria for our platform, either in size, quality, or both. There are some, however, that tZERO ATS may be interested in trading, and the business development team has had positive engagement with these issuers. The second category of issuers we are focused on is private companies, particularly those with a large number of investors, and other illiquid assets, such as commercial real estate. This represents the largest category of potential issuers as there are not many liquidity solutions available to these types of assets today. Our competitors in the pre-IPO liquidity space tend to exclusively service unicorn-type companies. Furthermore, they do not offer a live trading platform for their assets. For example, purchasing equity in a company often requires a middleman to facilitate the transaction and a minimum investment of $100,000, which can take months to close. Effectively, it is like buying/selling a home, which is an inefficient and costly process. Our platform, on the other hand, allows investors to trade shares of private companies in a streamlined experience. There are no minimums and, in most cases, non-accredited investors may also participate in investments. This is where we intend to focus the bulk of our business development efforts. Also, given there is no capital raise associated with this cohort, the variables that can impact success and timing are significantly reduced, and often an asset can be live and trading in a matter of weeks from signing.

Noursalehi says they continue to work with FINRA and the SEC on their retail broker-dealer tZERO Markets.

Expect additional information to emerge during the Q&A portion of the earnings call tomorrow.
