Sapar Karyagdyyev: Avoiding the pitfalls of a white-label solution – SBC News

Sapar Karyagdyyev, CEO of Gamingtec, looks at the key challenges when adopting a white-label solution, and why companies must exercise caution when entering the igaming market.

Using a white label offering is one of the most popular solutions for entrants interested in beginning their casino or sportsbook operations. Browsing the internet, one can find lots of tips and suggestions explaining how to start an online gambling business in just three, four, or six easy (as they promise) steps. However, almost nobody writes about the pitfalls one will inevitably face during the process.

Using evidence produced by Gamingtec, I would like to dispel some of the misconceptions about white labels as an easy solution, and perhaps offer some food for thought for those who wish to enter the business.

According to Statista, the global online gambling market is expected to be valued at more than $94bn in 2024. In 2019, the size of the market was almost $46bn, and that size is forecast to almost double in the upcoming years. The market is growing rapidly and it undoubtedly appears to be a lucrative field for investment.

As a consequence, it has become a highly competitive area: hundreds of casinos are launched and they fail daily. To run a competitive product, both a platform provider and a website owner should pay thorough attention to the preparation and launch process.

There are three main steps to start a casino: preparation, launch and marketing. They require a lot of time, attention and experience to be done well. The platform providers that launch dozens of casinos weekly in most cases use one-size-fits-all solutions and launch generic products that often go unnoticed as they do not meet the interests of the targeted audience.

There are lots of cases where such an out-of-box solution fits, however, more often than not, the operator will face challenges related to being one of many and struggling to stand out.

Most markets are being dominated by multitude of small and middle-sized operators, so-called value brands, which implies lower profit margins for all participants and perfect market conditions for the consumer. More brands compete for the same customer, better offers and the overall value that the customer receives.

Theoretically, such conditions dictate two possible profit making strategies; either be like everyone else but have a lower cost base or offer a product that has stand-out features and USPs for the end user. The out-of-box solution works perfectly well for the first option only.

An important factor for success is a fruitful collaboration between operator and platform provider. High-quality products grow from detailed planning and deep marketing research; this is by far the most important part of the whole process of launching a new gambling business. Fail-free operation, security of the information, high-quality content, payment options and professional customer support are all crucial for sustainability of the project.

Frequently, these issues are hidden and difficult for newcomers to foresee. Most are only revealed post-factum, after the launch of the product to customers and as too late or expensive to address. These issues then divert the operators attention from crucial acquisition-related activities.

Lets review those three main areas preparation, launch and marketing in more detail.

With regard to preparation, what are legal requirements for the target territory and advertising limitations? What is the compliance burden? The list of challenges is extensive. This step is important as it allows the adjustments of the TAM (total addressable market), acquisition costs and consequently, profit per user.

The above then drives requirements to the product and platform provider. What is important on the platform? CMS, player management system, bonus and promotions management system, game management system, payment system management interface, responsible gaming features, reporting engine, support of different roles for administrators, affiliate management system, anti-fraud system and CRM (retention system).

Marketing planning is key to develop a marketing strategy on how to launch a new casino to the market in question and collaborate with affiliates, developing a unique proposition that will drive customers to you and not others.

Budgeting? Plan for at least for the first three years.

The launch involves all work related to UX/UI, content, texts, compliance functionalities, personnel training, etc. Ensuring that the product quality and UX doesnt contradict your marketing strategy.

In considering marketing, determine the positioning of the company, pre- and post-launch advertising campaigns, attraction and retention of players, networking with the affiliates.

Those platform providers that offer unique approaches achieve good results. However, this is also a more difficult route to pursue. Custom solutions, by default, mean slower speed and lower quantity. Impact from a failed project is higher as one doesnt have another 100 white-labels to fall back on.

Heres three tips to start a beneficial partnership with the platform provider:

Why is white label a good solution for beginners?

Despite some of the pitfalls that I have outlined, I also wanted to give both sides of the argument, explaining that white-label solution can in fact be a good, viable option for beginners in the igaming sector.

Firstly, you receive your own branded product (you will not be a franchise). You will also be able to save both time and effort: the platform provider takes care of contracts with suppliers, licensing, web hosting, and so on. You cooperate with a team of professionals that can guide you through the process and offer advice.

A white-label brand is a test drive to understand if you have enough sources to involve and retain players, and organise a complete development of the project.

To conclude, the white label is not a quick and easy solution, but it is a reliable and effective one. If you cooperate with a platform provider that focuses on your project and launches a unique and personalised website with clear goals and a timeline, then you start a successful business with a high probability.

China launches robotic mission to orbit, land, and drive on Mars – Spaceflight Now

A Long March 5 rocket takes off Thursday from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on Hainan Island with the Tianwen 1 Mars mission. Credit: Xinhua

A heavy-lift Long March 5 rocket propelled Chinas first Mars landing mission toward the Red Planet on Thursday after launching from a seaside spaceport on Hainan Island, the second of three international Mars probes expected to depart planet Earth this month.

Kicking off a nearly seven-month journey, Chinas Tianwen 1 spacecraft lifted off from the Wenchang Space Launch Center in southern Chinas Hainan province at 12:41 a.m. EDT (0441 GMT; 12:41 p.m. Beijing time) on top of a Long March 5 rocket, the heaviest launcher in the countrys inventory.

A live video feed streamed by amateur spectators near the launch site showed the Long March 5 rocket climbing away from the Wenchang spaceport. Ten rocket engines fueled by kerosene and liquid hydrogen powered the 187-foot-tall (57-meter) Long March 5 into a sunny midday sky, and the rocket quickly receded from view in the unofficial online video feed.

Chinese state media did not broadcast the mission live or publicize the exact launch time in advance, but airspace and maritime notices warning pilots and sailors to steer clear of downrange drop zones suggested the Long March 5 was scheduled to lift off Thursday.

Chinese authorities lifted the news blackout on the launch once the 11,000-pound (5-metric ton) Tianwen 1 spacecraft was injected onto a trajectory toward Mars by the Long March 5s second stage. The China National Space Administration confirmed the Long March 5 rocket placed Tianwen 1 on the proper course toward Mars about 36 minutes after launch.

The China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp., the government-owned prime contractor for Chinas space program, declared the launch a success in a statement.

Tianwen 1 is scheduled to arrive at Mars next February after a seven-month voyage. If successful, the mission will be Chinas first probe to enter orbit around another planet.

Two-to-three months later, the Tianwen 1 orbiter will release a lander to enter the Martian atmosphere and aim for a controlled touchdown in Utopia Planitia, a broad plain in Marss northern hemisphere. Once on the surface, the lander will lower a ramp and a 529-pound (240-kilogram) rover will drive onto the surface.

If China pulls off those feats according to plan, they will make China the third country to perform a soft landing on Mars after the Soviet Union and the United States and the second country to drive a robotic rover on the Red Planet.

NASA has landed the only successful rovers on Mars to date.

The seemingly flawless launch Thursday by the Long March 5 rocket gives Chinas most powerful launcher an 80 percent success record after five flights. The Long March 5 failed on its second test flight in 2017, but has now logged three consecutive successes.

Tianwen 1 is Chinas next leap in solar system exploration after a series of progressively complex robotic expeditions to the moon.

Most recently, China has landed two rovers on the moon, including the first to explore the surface of the lunar far side. The next Chinese lunar mission, named Change 5, is scheduled for launch on a Long March 5 rocket late this year on a mission to return samples from the moon.

China officially started development of the Mars mission in 2016.

It will be the countrys second attempt to reach Mars with a robotic probe, following the Yinghuo 1 orbiter, which was stranded in Earth orbit after launch as a piggyback payload on Russias failed Phobos-Grunt mission.

Benefiting from the engineering heritage of Chinas lunar exploration program, the Chinese national strategy set Mars as the next target for planetary exploration, wrote Wan Weixing, chief scientist of Chinas Mars exploration program, in a paper published this month by the science journal Nature Astronomy. Chinas first Mars mission is named Tianwen 1, and aims to complete orbiting, landing and roving in one mission.

Wan died in May after a long illness.

Chinese officials announced the Tianwen name for the countrys planetary missions in April. The name Tianwen comes from the work of ancient Chinese poet Qu Yuan, meaning quest for heavenly truth, according to the China National Space Administration, or CNSA, the countrys space agency.

The countrys first Martian probe will conduct scientific investigations about the Martian soil, geological structure, environment, atmosphere, as well as water, CNSA said in a statement.

After reaching Mars in February, the Tianwen 1 spacecraft will initially enter a long-period capture orbit around the Red Planet. The orbiter will eventually settle in a loop around Mars ranging between 165 miles (265 kilometers) and nearly 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometers) over the Martian poles.

As soon as next April, the lander and rover modules will detach from the orbiter to begin a descent through the Martian atmosphere. Radar soundings from orbit have indicated the presence of a reservoir of ice containing as much water as Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, in the Utopia Planitia region targeted by Tianwen 1s lander.

The Tianwen 1 orbiter is designed to operate for at least one Martian year, or about two years on Earth. The solar-powered rover, fitted with six wheels for mobility, has a life expectancy of at least 90 days, Chinese officials said.

Chinese scientists say the Tianwen 1 mission will perform a global survey of Mars, measuring soil and rock composition, searching for signs of buried water ice, and studying the Martian magnetosphere and atmosphere. The orbiter and rover will also observe Martian weather and probe Marss internal structure.

The orbiters seven instruments include a:

The Tianwen 1 rover is cocooned inside a heat shield for a fiery descent to the Martian surface. After releasing from the orbiter mothership, the lander will enter the Red Planets atmosphere, deploy a parachute, then fire a braking rocket to slow down for landing.

Tianwen 1 is going to orbit, land and release a rover all on the very first try, and coordinate observations with an orbiter, Wan, the late chief scientist for Chinas Mars program, wrote in Nature Astronomy. No planetary missions have ever been implemented in this way. If successful, it would signify a major technical breakthrough.

Scientifically, Tianwen 1 is the most comprehensive mission to investigate the Martian morphology, geology, mineralogy, space environment, and soil and water-ice distribution.

The rovers six science payloads include a:

The rovers ground-penetrating radar would be one of the first science instruments of its kind to reach the surface of Mars. NASAs Perseverance rover carries a comparable instrument to scan subsurface layers of the Martian crust in search of water ice deposits.

Tianwen 1 is a Chinese-led project, but scientists and support teams from several countries have agreed to provide assistance on the mission.

Scientists from theInstitut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Plantologie, or IRAP, in France contributed to a Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy instrument on the Tianwen 1 rover.

French scientists, with support from the French space agency CNES, provided guidance to their Chinese counterparts on the spectroscopy technique, which uses a laser to zap a pinhead-size portion of a rock, and a spectrometer to analyze the light given off by plasma generated by the lasers interaction with the rocks surface.

The technique allows an instrument to determine the chemical make-up of rocks on Mars.

The discussions between French and Chinese scientists were intended to maximize the quality of the data produced by the Tianwen 1 rover, according to Agnes Cousin, a planetary scientist at IRAP who worked with Chinese researchers developing the rovers instruments.

French scientists from the same research institute helped develop the ChemCam instrument on NASAs Curiosity rover and the SuperCam payload set for launch July 30 on NASAs Perseverance Mars rover. ChemCam and SuperCam use the same Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy technique as the Tianwen 1 rover.

Researchers from France provided a norite calibration target to fly on the Tianwen 1 rover. Its similar to a unit on NASAs Curiosity rover used to calibrate ChemCams measurements by turning the instrument on a target like the rock norite with a known composition.

The SuperCam instrument on NASAs Perseverance rover will us a different type rock as a calibration target, but Cousin said scientists at her lab in France will still be able to cross-calibrate measurements from Curiosity, Perseverance, and the Tianwen 1 rover.

Scientists from the Space Research Institute at the Austrian Academy of Sciences assisted in the development of the magnetometer on the Tianwen 1 orbiter and helped calibrate the flight instrument.

Argentina is home to a Chinese-owned deep space tracking antenna that will be used to communicate with Tianwen 1 after launch. The European Space Agency has agreed to provide communications time for Tianwen 1 on its own worldwide network of deep space tracking stations, and help with the probes navigation on the journey to Mars.

The launch of the Tianwen 1 Mars mission Thursday occurred less than four days after the launch of the Hope Mars probe developed by the United Arab Emirates, and a week before NASAs Perseverance Mars rover is scheduled for blastoff.

The ever-changing positions of the planets only allow for missions to make a direct trip from Earth to Mars once every 26 months or so. The Mars launch window opened this year in mid-July and extends until mid-August.

While NASA and U.S. scientists are aiding the UAEs Hope Mars orbiter, NASA has no such role on Chinas Tianwen 1 mission. NASAs Deep Space Network, which provides tracking and communications coverage for numerous U.S. and international space probes, has not been called up to support Tianwen 1s voyage to Mars.

Instead, China is using a combination of its own tracking antennas and ESAs global network of ground stations.

NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine congratulated China on the successful launch Thursday.

With todays launch, China is on its way to join the community of international scientific explorers at Mars, Bridenstine tweeted. The United States, Europe, Russia, India, and soon the UAE will welcome you to Mars to embark on an exciting year of scientific discovery. Safe travels Tianwen-1!

An asteroid the size of a car just zipped by Earth in close flyby – Space.com

A car-sized asteroid discovered over the weekend made a close flyby of Earth today (July 28), passing our planet at a range that rivals the orbits of some high-flying satellites.

The asteroid 2020 OY4, which was first detected on Sunday (July 26), made its closest approach today at 1:31 a.m. EDT (0531 GMT) when it zipped by Earth at a speed of about 27,700 mph (44,600 km/h), according to the European Space Agency. The asteroid is just under 10 feet (3 meters) wide and posed no impact risk to Earth, but did approach the flight paths of geosynchronous satellites.

"A tiny, 3 meter asteroid called 2020 OY4 skimmed past Earth just a few hours ago, passing within the orbit of satellites in the geostationary ring," ESA officials wrote in a Twitter update.

Video: Watch asteroid 2020 OY4's orbit and flyby animationRelated: Famous asteroid flybys and close calls (infographic)

Estimates from ESA's Center for Near-Earth Object Coordination Center and NASA's Asteroid Watch outreach tool vary in the exact distance of asteroid 2020 OY4 at its closest approach.

NASA's tool listed the closest distance as about 25,800 miles (41,400 km), which is just outside the ring of geosynchronous satellites 22,236 miles (35,786 km) above Earth's equator. ESA's asteroid-tracking center pegged the flyby range at about 21,900 miles (35,170 km), or just inside the satellite orbit ring.

"Of course, there were no risks at all to our planet," wrote astrophysicist Gianluca Masi of the Virtual Telescope Project in Ceccano, Italy.

Masi captured a photo of asteroid 2020 OY4 on Monday (July 27), just ahead of the flyby. In the image, the asteroid looks like a bright dot on a sea of black streaked by star lines.

"The telescope tracked the fast apparent motion of the asteroid; this is why stars show as long trails, while the asteroid looks like a bright and sharp dot of light in the center of the image, marked by an arrow," Masi wrote in an image description.

Asteroids the size of 2020 OY4 fly by Earth several times a month, NASA officials have said in the past. In June 2019, an asteroid slightly larger than 2020 OY4 actually hit the Earth, but broke up harmlessly in the atmosphere, astronomers said.

Seven Pillars Law Firm Ready to Support Space Startups and Other Businesses in Kazakhstan – Astana Times

NUR-SULTAN Seven Pillars Law, one of Central Asias most innovative law firms, has recently established a space office with the mission to assist clients looking to access opportunities, both commercial and scientific, associated with space. The Astana Times spoke with Helen Tung, the head of the Space division of Seven Pillars Law in the Astana International Financial Center (AIFC) to learn more about the divisions activities and space law.

Helen Tung

The space division aims to assist customers to grow their business, avoid problems and advise them on intellectual property rights, like any other area of law, Tung told about the role of the division. Space law encompasses a vast field of multiple areas of law including public international law, air space, contracts, torts, intellectual property, government contracts, insurance and also regulatory law including advising of matters related to International Traffic of Arms Regulation (ITAR).

The space division will also complement the activities of the AIFC and its innovation strategy.

Kazakhstan is a pioneer, known for the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the worlds first and largest space launch facility, Tung noted. We have seen many historic moments and history evolve from the Cosmodrome and it has also inspired films and many visits from those working in space and enthusiasts.

Tung feels that with the right laws and vision, in the same way that, the AIFC aims to be the most innovative international financial center in the world, Kazakhstan can position itself to be the most attractive place for space startups and businesses to set up their business, knowing full well they have the know-how and experience regarding space.

For Tung, space is a mystery as much as a place of familiarity. She grew up in Australia and the Southern Cross going constantly across the skies got her interested in space. In many ways, she admits, space found her and not the other way around as it was only later in her career that she discovered the world of space law.

When Tung joined the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC), she took part in activities in the space law and policy committee. It provided her with a great network of enthusiasts, lawyers, students interested in space.

Tung joined the International Aeronautical Congress (IAC), the leading space organization as Co-Chair of joint session Space Debris and Space Operations and Vice-Chair of the Risk Management Committee. She studied at the International Space University summer course conducted by the European Space Agency.

I have had opportunities to talk about space law at the International Bar Association, speaking at space conferences and also engaging with startups, entrepreneurs, and investors, she added.

We live in interesting times, and for those who are interested, passionate and curious there will be a role for them in the developments of space, be it in law, policy, business or otherwise, she said.

Now, space activities are becoming increasingly accessible to startups and businesses that have no experience or exposure to space. The reason being new laws and regulations, as seen in places like Luxembourg and the United States, have over the years encouraged commercialization of space. That in itself poses many legal questions involving ownership and resources in outer space, issues with space traffic management, data centers in space and concerning human space flight and space debris.

As the commercialization of space increases, with more businesses turning to space business from startups to space launch and development of spaceports, there is also an increasing awareness that there are substantial problems like space debris which can have damaging effects on any space mission and with consequences back on earth that need to be addressed.

Research centers and scientists around the world are constantly monitoring and observing the developments in space and space debris is one of the most obvious problems that need to be tackled before people can envisage a properly functioning ecosystem in outer space.

I am involved with some organizations including the Moon Village Association which envisages a return to space permanently and the development of a Moon ecosystem. And Im involved with the International Consortium Space Elevator which encourages the idea of building an elevator to deliver goods and services to space and ultimately for human use, Tung said.

Human space flight developed by Virgin Galactic and SpaceX will also change the way people live.

There are many interesting aspects to the developments in space, and law no doubt needs to be considered and so it is an exciting time to consider the role of space law and opportunities there, she said.

Nur-Sultan based Seven Pillars Law is Kazakhstans first decentralized law firm. It was established to support companies doing business in, with or through Kazakhstan and the AIFC. The firm is named after the Zheti Zhargy, the seven foundational pillars of the Kazakh legal system introduced in the 17th Century by Khan Tauke (1680 1718), a ruler of the Kazakh Khanate (State).

New Music: Oakland collective SMARTBOMB has that feeling of futurism – 48 Hills

Beat music, the defiant all-inclusive electronic aesthetic that seizes and chops up odd bits of hip-hop, library music, jazz, bass music, IDM, and anything else that shouldnt fit but just does, gets it specificity from the region from which it emanates. Low End Theory, the epicenter of LAs instrumental beat scene for 12 years, was internationally known for their heavy bass, which depending on who was playing that particular night, left a footprint in your chest and at times destroyed speakers and rattled ceilings. That beautiful ruckus propelled oddball beat-frenzied artists into starting record labels and eventually earning Grammy nominations.

Case in point SMARTBOMB, the East Bay music, and art collective, started in 2013 as part of the popular party that spotlights mostly local producers and DJs, can get real heady. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, SMARTBOMB held monthly events, mostly at the Legionnaire Saloon where the showcases highlighted Oaklands IRT post-modern approach to sound. As co-founder Jason Garcawho speaks infusing the name of some authoritative Shuggy Otis albumexplains, the East Bay has always possessed this sense of radical introspection and manifestation.

Diversity of thought is innate in the Town, where we are blessed to have such rich and genuine community, stated Garcia, who is preparing for the collectives second worldwide broadcast this Saturday. Its not so much a scene, but true community that spans beyond age, gender, lifestyle, etc. So many beings here who fearlessly push the needle forward in their own respects, in their own mediums and genres alongside each other. Vastly differing sonic and visual styles and approaches, all thrown into this magic pot for us all to find inspiration information from. Its a feeling of futurism.

Light Beings #2, the second installment of a mixtape series in collaboration with the community platform Lower Grand Radio, is the audio extension of that sentiment. Following through with intention shining light on the beautiful frequencies created from our expansive universe, while also raising funds for vital organizations & programs in the Town highlights the motives of the project listed on their Bandcamp page.

Wylie Cable, founder of Los Angeles based Dome of Doom Records, always perceived the East Bay collective as a NorCal version of Low End Theory that understood what the music needed to be. Cable was an integral part of signal boosting that Low End Theory Culture still employs to prop up beat producers to this day.

I grew up in LA but lived in the Bay for five to six years in the early 2000s and I used to go to the monthlies they threw, stated Cable. Always a great show. It is not a small task, running an event that focuses on underground beat music, but Smartbomb has been at it for close to a decade now.

That manifestation of Bay Area headiness runs the table with great facility. Peep the glitched-out scatter bang of Normalcy from DKM, or the cooldown tingly hip-hop strain Sometimes I Listen by heru. You understand real quick that these are daring architects.

But its the stillness that takes the most courage. After journeying through the first 11 tracks, big ambient energy is the best way to describe the final arrangement of Selim Xs Sunset 6. It a gargantuan four minutes and change of evergreen wave slowly rolling ova and thru you, like the best salted caramel ice cream. Lets toss out qualifiers and just make room for the serenity. Heartbeat soft, warped nanoseconds folding over. Eat your heart out, Brian Eno. This is beat music framed in the way George Clinton himself liked to categorize funk: Anything it needs to be in order to save my life.

SMARTBOMBs second virtual VHS broadcast streams Sat/25. RSVP for link.

Scientists Studying Sex Differences in the Brain Fear Their Work Will Be Misrepresented – Futurism

A team of National Institutes of Health (NIH) scientists is walking a delicate line: publishing researchabout how the human brain differs across sex, while trying to guard against their work being misrepresented by misogynists.

Armin Raznahan, chief of developmental neurogenomics at the NIH, published research in the journal PNAS on Monday about how sex chromosomes are tied linked to differences in the size of various brain regions. The research, Wired reports, could give doctors a better understanding of how neurodevelopmental disorders may manifest in different groups.

If we can understand the biology of sex better, Raznahan told Wired, maybe those pathways are going to help us understand what is happening to put a person at risk of manifesting symptoms of autism spectrum disorder, for example.

But the sensitive nature of Raznahans research has him trying to fight misinterpretations of it something he told Wired hes run into since early in his career.

I got my fingers burned when I first started, Raznahan told Wired.

At the time, he was researching the differences between how mens and womens brains change over time. And while his paper only touched on structural changes and not any functional differences, that didnt stop The Wall Street Journal from citing his work in a 2011 article that suggested schoolchildren might learn better in single-sex classrooms.

Because its such a dodgy topic and the practical conclusions one could draw from such research remain unclear, scientists told Wired that maybe scientists shouldnt investigate sex differences in the brain so thoroughly at all. But others argue that its essential.

We cant not make discoveries, University of Maryland School of Medicine pharmacology professor Margaret McCarthy told Wired, because they might be misused.

Proposed Navy testing program could harm the orcas: Washington state head honchos are pushing back against a new Navy training program that would cover the West Coast. According to the Seattle Times the military exercises for the Navy would range from "testing torpedoes to firing projectiles from a gun into the sea at seven times the speed of sound, to piloting mine-detecting undersea drones, deploying underwater sonar and exploding up to 1,000-pound bombs at sea." The Navy has assured that no orcas would be killed during the program. Other marine animals? No promises.

Another warm day: Expect some 80-degree weather. Drink your water.

But 11 years ago it was the hottest day ever:

Nevada sheriff tells local library to fuck off: The Douglas County sheriff wrote an open letter entirely about how the Douglas County Public Library staff could get bent and that the sheriff would no longer be responding to their 911 calls since the library supported Black Lives Matter. The letter was nearly identical in some sections to the letter "conservative attorney generals and the Western States Sheriffs Association sent to congressional leaders last month," the Nevada Independent reports.

Over 100 police agencies pull out of the Democratic National Convention: Next month's DNC event will be held in Milwaukee. The police departments that signed on to beef up security at the event are having second thoughts because the local jurisidiction in Milwuakee just banned its police department from using tear gas on crowds.

Here's the NYPD kidnapping a protester: Plain clothes officers snatched a protester off the street and pushed them into an unmarked van. After the video of the arrest (?) went viral, the NYPD released a statement saying the protester was taken in by the Warrant Squad for "damaging police cameras during five separate criminal incidents in and around City Hall Park."

The U.S. will pull feds from Portland if...: Oregon agrees to step up its own enforcement. There's no agreement yet.

Meanwhile: Portland fights back.

Big Tech goes to Washington (D.C.): The antitrust panel of the House Judiciary Committee has been investigating Big Tech for the last year where the committee has "at least 1.3 million documents from the testifying companies, held five public hearings, and conducted hundreds of hours of interviews." Texas representative catches the virus: GOP Rep. Louie Gohmert has tested positive for COVID-19. Gohmert refused to wear a mask in the Capitol. He said that if he got the virus then he'd put a mask on. He's the seventh representative to test positive.

Oof: Things are bad in Florida.

Coronavirus survivors suffer heart damage: Around three quarters of people who have recovered from COVID-19 reportedly have heart damage.

Republican Senator David Perdue of Georgia allegedly doctored a photo of his competition: Perdue has pulled a campaign ad that made his rival, Jon Ossoff, who is Jewish, appear to have a bigger nose. The text read: "Democrats are trying to buy Georgia! Help David Perdue fight back!" Yikes.

Commentary: Big Tech is engaged in a hostile takeover of our country – TheBlaze.com

I got an epiphany for my birthday, after a conversation I had with our management at TheBlaze this week about the future of our industry.

I believe the No. 1 issue in the country is Big Tech censorship. It is the issue that will determine the future, because this is how information gets distributed in our culture.

Martin Luther was perhaps the most important man in the last millennium and changed the world to this day, but only because Gutenberg invented the printing press that provided him the means to do so. Without that, Luther is just another martyred would-be reformer lost to history. Without that platform, Luther's 95 Theses don't survive the week, let alone 500 years and counting.

Imagine living in Bible times, and your views weren't permitted at the City Gate where community business/information was done and made. Imagine being denied access to the world the telephone opened up because of your views. You are essentially relegated to cultural serfdom.

In our time, Big Tech is those things. Except they not only are distributing the information we see, but deciding the information we see as well and doing so while selling our personal information for profit and collecting it for their own use. This is perhaps the most sweeping and dangerous monopoly in the history of market-based economies.

It's the equivalent of Ma Bell a century ago deciding who gets a telephone based on whether you align with their corporate views, and then deciding what you get to hear when you answer the phone.

If Big Tech censorship is permitted to go on unchallenged, you're looking at a new Dark Ages when it comes to the information age. You can have all the conservative, religious, traditional, or even radical views you want, but if you're cut off from the world with them it doesn't matter. You have no means to bring them to light. You are not an influencer. You basically don't even exist. You're off the grid.

In this scenario, the American church becomes like the church in China. People are still getting saved underground, because God's Word does not return void, but above ground its cultural influence/impact are null and void.

And don't think for a second that isn't the end game here, and we're in that end game now.

And no, it's not as simple as "go build your own Facebook then." You cannot. All the means by which you would bring such a product to market is all controlled by the same Big Tech giants trying to control us now. Go ask the CEO of Parler what it took to get the alternative to Twitter listed in the app stores, for example I have. And those restrictions will only grow harder to navigate as these Big Tech companies become increasingly politically aggressive.

See, the same Big Tech that owns a monopoly on the distribution of information is approaching monopoly status on the means of information production, too. And once they reach critical mass on that front, it is game over.

Big Tech as a private industry has grown beyond our traditional small government creeds we lost on every front already anyway, when you look at the size and scope of government even if Big Tech never existed. Denying the reality of what's happening here on small government grounds is like denying you're pregnant in the delivery room. Since we already lost every small government argument anyway, we set the stage for a behemoth like Big Tech to arise.

No, it's not about small government. It's about alternative government, because that's what Big Tech is forming. Or, at the very least, an alternative ecosystem that will determine who gets to serve in the government we have.

What we're witnessing here is a hostile takeover of a country. Albeit one that looks different from how it historically has. There will be no tanks down main street. There will be no book burnings and mass cancellations. There will be no riots spilling over into outright insurrection. Nor will there be jack-booted thugs knocking on our doors.

Because when all these things happen, Big Tech won't permit you to see it.

Big Tech to Testify: What Jim Cramer Is Watching – TheStreet

Big tech CEO's--including Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Alphabet--have agreed to testify in front of the House Judiciary Committee which is probing antitrust issues Wednesday.

The hearing was previously scheduled for Monday, but was rescheduled due to the funeral proceedings of the late U.S. representative John Lewis.

Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Jeff Bezos, of Amazon are set to appear.

The major technology companies have been facing investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice, as well as state attorneys general, over concerns about their dominance of key growth areas of the economy.

Among issues under examination is the use of major tech platforms to put competitors at a disadvantage. The companies also face concerns over failures to protect user privacy and over their failure to control the spread of disinformation and hate speech on their platforms.

Federal antitrust investigations of the companies began gathering steam last year. Similar probes have been launched by European regulators In recent weeks, Apple has come under fire for fees charged to developers using its in-app purchasing system.

Amazon's Jeff Bezos, who is newer to the politics of Capitol Hill, is expected to face questions on Amazon's e-commerce dominance as well as private label products.

Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will likely see the company's handling of problematic content in focus.

While the testimonies will certainly make news, Jim Cramer said he isn't so worried about shareholders. "Everybody wants to investigate these companies...but what are you going to do?" Cramer asked.

Cramer said at the end of the day, he's more worried about the employees of big tech than investors.

And don't expect big tech to exit the headlines any time soon. All four companies are also expected to report quarterly results Thursday.

What are you watching as big tech takes the podium? Tell us in the comments below.

Apple, Google, Amazon, other Big Tech companies have a climate problem; now being forced to clean up – Firstpost

The New York TimesJul 23, 2020 12:33:50 IST

Apple on Tuesday became the latest tech giant to promise to do more to reduce the emissions of planet-warming greenhouse gases, announcing in a statement that, by 2030, every Apple device sold will have net-zero climate impact.

Apple said it aimed to reduce emissions by 75% in its manufacturing chain, including by recycling more of the components that go into each device and nudging its suppliers to use renewable energy. As for the remaining 25% of emissions, the company said it planned to balance them by funding reforestation projects.

Forests absorb carbon dioxide, and reforestation has become a popular way for companies to offset the greenhouse gas emissions that they produce, including from factories.

Climate advocates describe these offset efforts as inadequate because they allow emissions to grow at a time when the scientific consensus demands that emissions be cut in half by 2030 in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change and be reduced to zero by 2050.

Separately Tuesday, Microsoft announced that it would require its suppliers to report their emissions, as a first step toward making reductions.

Like other corporate pledges, both are entirely voluntary.

It feels like theres a virtuous follow-the-leader thing happening here, said Simon Nicholson, co-director for the Institute for Carbon Removal Law and Policy at American University.

He noted the limitations of the pledge, though. What Apple has signaled here is the beginning of a strategy on the carbon-removal side, Nicholson said. Holding carbon in forests for a year or two isnt going to cut it. It needs to be held in forests for the long term, which means centuries.

Big Techs role in global warming varies from company to company. Amazon, Facebook and Google all use enormous amounts of energy and water for their data centers. Amazon relies on gas-guzzling trucks and packages that themselves have a huge environmental footprint; even recycling uses a lot of energy. And makers of devices like Amazon, Apple, Google and Microsoft produce greenhouse gas emissions through their supply chains, which involve contractors that do the actual manufacturing in different parts of the world.

The pressure on companies to do something about their climate footprint comes both from within the ranks of their employees and from advocacy groups on the outside.

Not only are they under scrutiny for the emissions they produce. Internet companies, like Facebook, have been criticized for allowing the spread of disinformation about climate science. Greenpeace took aim at Google, Microsoft and Amazon for using their artificial intelligence and cloud computing services to help oil producers find and extract oil and gas deposits, which Greenpeace said is significantly undermining the tech companies other climate commitments.

One by one, the giants of Silicon Valley have been compelled to address their own role in the climate crisis.

Google said in May it would no longer build customized artificial intelligence technology or machine learning algorithms for the oil and gas sector. It has also pledged to include recycled material in its devices, including its popular Chromebook computers, by 2022.

Amazon announced last September its bid to be carbon-neutral by 2040, while its chief executive, Jeff Bezos, committed $10 billion to fund climate science and advocacy.

Amazons move came after sustained calls from its own employees to reduce emissions to zero by 2030, a full 10 years earlier than the companys current target. Its employees also pressed Bezos to stop offering custom cloud-computing services to the oil and gas industry and to suspend campaign donations to politicians who deny climate science.

Amazon continues to do business with fossil fuel companies, but Bezos said the company would take a hard look at its political donations. Amazon said it would reduce its climate change impact by, among other things, buying a fleet of 100,000 electric delivery trucks. But, like Apple, Amazons pledge to be net-zero by 2040 relies on reforestation projects to offset its continuing emissions.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announces new electronic delivery rickshaw fleet for India.

Microsoft this year said it would draw down more emissions than it adds and also somehow remove all the emissions the company has ever produced. It promised to invest $1 billion in what it called climate innovations, but it left untouched its partnerships with oil and gas companies.

Facebook announced that it would use 100% renewable energy in its facilities and reduce water use in its data centers, though it has said little about what it will do to stop the spread of climate disinformation on its platform.

Apples net-zero pledge is notable in that it seeks to address the main source of its greenhouse gas emissions: from the manufacturing of its phones, tablets and computers by its contractor companies.

Apples statement on Tuesday underscored the need for businesses like it to pivot away from fossil fuels for the sake of its own bottom line. We have a generational opportunity, said Lisa Jackson, a company vice president responsible for environmental issue, to help build a greener and more just economy, one where we develop whole new industries in the pursuit of giving the next generation a planet worth calling home.

Elizabeth Jardim, who works on corporate issues at Greenpeace USA, cautiously welcomed the pledge as a step up from the companys previous commitments, noting in an email that as with all carbon neutral or carbon negative goals, it is critical to see detailed plans for how the company will pursue deep decarbonization rather than a reliance on offsetting or weak nature-based carbon removal initiatives.

Jardim also urged large, profitable companies to throw their weight behind policies like the Green New Deal.

On Twitter, Edward Maibach, of the George Mason University Center for Climate Change Communication, called the Apple pledge a big step in the right direction, if they make good on it. Next, they should lobby governments worldwide to increase their commitments to the Paris Climate Agreement.

Reshaping Artificial Intelligence with the Help of Affordances – Analytics Insight

Artificial intelligence as of now is considered among the most evident digital technologies and vows to create significant business value later on. Along with a constantly growing body of knowledge, exploration in this field could additionally benefit from fusing innovative features, human characteristics, and organizational objectives into the assessment of artificial intelligence empowered systems.

To bring artificial intelligence systems closer to living beings it is important to understand their mindset and thought process. This can be possible by studying their psychological factors with the help of affordance theory.

Affordances are an idea emerging from the field of perceptual psychology, as a component of Gibsons fundamental work on ecological observation (J. Gibson 1979). An affordance is an activity probability shaped by the connection between an agent and its environment. For instance, the affordance of throwing exists when the catching and pushing capacities of an agent are all well-coordinated with the size and weight of an object.

This throwing capacity isnt a property of either the agent or the object however it is a relationship between them. This relationship-oriented perspective of the potential for activity has an increasing demand in the field of applied sciences, as it presents favorable circumstances for functionality and design over conventional AI methods.

An ecological approach to deal with the plan of robotic agents can hold huge significance for scientists in the field of artificial intelligence. Rendered agents arranged in a physical environment contain an abundance of data, simply by perceiving their general surroundings. By exploiting the connection between the agent and its environment, creators can reduce the requirement for an agent to develop and maintain complex representations; designers can rather concentrate on the details of how the agent interacts directly with the surroundings around it.

The result is increasingly adaptable agents that are better able to react to the dynamic, real-world environment. The ecological approach in this way becomes appropriate for the design of rendered agents, for example, versatile autonomous robots, where the agent might be required to work in complex, unstable, and real-time situations.

Planning and execution in such systems is generally a firmly challenging procedure, with the agent continuously recomputing the best course of short-term activity, along with the execution of the current task. This reduces reliance on a control state that monitors the agents progress in a sequence of activities that may depend on unrealized obsolete information. An ecologically aware agent can exhibit adaptability despite evolving conditions, while still performing complex activities.

Certain experts explain, utilizing a simulated environment, how environmental factors can enable an agent to abort a routine that is no longer relevant, re-perform a failed activity, briefly suspend one task for another, incorporate tasks, and consolidate tasks at the same time to accomplish various objectives.

Comparative attributes have emerged in various physical robotic systems that follow various techniques and configuration patterns, yet incorporate standards compatible with the environmental conditions. Whether physical or simulated, a large number of these systems share a typical methodology in the utilization of exploratory practices, or different stages, in which the agent essentially tries out an activity without a particular objective, to monitor the outcome on its environment.

Through exploratory collaborations, the agent is capable to become familiar with the affordances of its surrounding to a great extent freely. However, the affordances the agent can find will be dependent not only on its physical and perceptual capacities but also on all the types of exploratory practices with which it has been customized.

It is likewise imperative to take into consideration the limitations of this theory. Artificial intelligence analysts are frequently trying to duplicate conduct, which might not possibly emphasize detailed modeling of the systems. The simplicity of usage, speed of execution, and the final performance of the system should all be analyzed when choosing what models to apply to the design of an artificial agent.

In this manner, the reliability of the model utilized will depend upon several elements, including how well the systems are understood, how effectively they can be imitated with the available equipment and programming, and the particular objectives of the examination.

Affordances play multiple roles in situations. On one hand, they permit quicker planning, by diminishing the number of activities available in random circumstances. On the other hand, they encourage increasingly proficient and precise learning of transformation models from data. While researchers and AI specialists may not generally agree on the details of the executions, they share the objective of better understanding agent-environment systems.

Further, huge numbers of the agents being created are moving past the issues of basic navigation and obstacle avoidance, with ecological methodologies being applied to the structure of robots fit for altering the environment with which they connect. It is expected that the utilization of an affordance-based plan will keep on developing alongside the improvement of robotic agents capable of increasingly more complex behaviors.

Militias’ warning of excessive federal power comes true but where are they? – Thehour.com

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)

Amy Cooter, Vanderbilt University

(THE CONVERSATION) Militias and many other Second Amendment advocates have long argued that their primary desire to own firearms often, many of them is rooted in a need to protect themselves and their families from a tyrannical federal government, or to discourage the government from becoming tyrannical in the first place.

But with the mayor of a major U.S. city warning that tyranny and dictatorship have already arrived on the streets in the shape of unidentified federal troops using questionable tactics militia groups appear reluctant to throw their lot in with protesters. In fact, many have been supporting government action to suppress peaceful demonstrators.

Certainly the scenes in Portland have alarmed civil liberties groups:Heavily armed and camouflaged federal officers, wearing no name tags or other insignia, are on the streets of Portland, Oregon, and have teargassed and arrested seemingly peaceful protesters with little or no provocation. President Donald Trump has said similar forces are coming to other cities many run by Democrats.

To some, it may look exactly like what the militias have been warning of.

As a scholar of the U.S. domestic militia movement, I have seen in recent months a new divide emerging in these groups.

Some, often calling themselves the boogaloo movement, see the current political unrest as an opportunity to wrest power from an overbearing federal government. Others support police and their enforcement of strict law and order, even if that means authorities using powerful weapons and overwhelming force.

Shifting online dynamics

Assessing what these groups are doing, and how they are discussing recent events, has become more difficult for observers like me in recent weeks. On June 30, Facebook announced it had removed hundreds of accounts and groups allegedly related to the boogaloo movement.

The move came in the wake of several arrests of alleged boogaloo adherents across the country, including three in Nevada accused of plotting to firebomb federal land and one in Texas accused of killing one police officer and critically injuring another.

Boogaloo groups still have a social media presence and, until recently when the portion of the site they used was closed, a large presence on the Reddit discussion site, where comments are loosely regulated and people can post anonymously.

Now the movements public face is smaller and harder to find without insider knowledge. For instance, until recently it was common to see groups with the words big igloo in their names, a play on the word boogaloo. After Facebooks crackdown, some groups are using the word icehouse or other synonyms that may not be as obvious. They are therefore harder for algorithms to find, but also for people to find whether to observe or to join in.

Backing the boog

The groups who back the boogaloo imply, or even outright declare, that the U.S. is no longer a free country, and generally call for supporters to oppose, violently if necessary, federal forces and the government they represent.

In the days after George Floyds death, I saw some of these groups call for members to participate in protests opposing police violence. But I have not seen similar calls in response to federal officers violence in Portland.

That may change if federal forces do appear in other places, especially areas geographically closer to active back the boog supporters. It is also possible that the groups are discussing protests or other actions in less public ways, in private messages or on platforms like Parler, that have marketed themselves as friendlier toward a variety of conservative views.

Backing the blue

There are still militia members who support police, often called back the blue groups. Commentators have observed that silence from them and other Second Amendment supporters certainly seems to be hypocritical, at best, and possibly supportive of tyranny in the current context.

Thats not the way they see it. They argue that one of the few legitimate functions of the federal government is to protect citizens from others who might infringe on their rights or safety. They support police who say that Portland authorities have failed to protect regular people from violent protesters.

Thats also what these groups claimed happened in Seattles autonomous zone though they rely on news sources that describe the protesters as inherently dangerous and hampering business and free association. They seemingly ignore or discount other reports that these characterizations are exaggerated. In my research, I found that militia members were likely to exclusively trust sources like Fox News or even more conservative sites for their information, and recent data confirms that such sources may strongly shape viewers understanding of political and other events.

Mistaken perceptions?

This view of protesters as violent is amplified by some back the blue members belief that the demonstrators are Marxist members of antifa, a mostly nonviolent leaderless collective movement generally opposing fascism.

For example, one Facebook group shared a video of Christopher David, the Navy veteran beaten by federal officers in Portland, talking about his experience. A commentator responded, The end of the video tell[s] the tale, hes going to raise money for [Black Lives Matter]! He is a liar he went there to stand with his commie comrades.

Scholarship on conservative groups argues that they use anti-communist language to cast political opponents as not real Americans who have thus have forfeited any protections U.S. citizens should have.

Anti-liberal rhetoric

Some other back the blue members see hypocrisy in liberals, noting that few, if any, on the left objected when federal officers killed LaVoy Finicum during the 2016 standoff between federal officials and armed supporters of rancher Cliven Bundy during a land dispute elsewhere in Oregon.

There are sharing pages like one on a well-known conservative satire site that suggests the same Oregon authorities opposing federal officers tolerate violent behavior from protesters because of identity politics the idea that certain groups favored by liberals, in this case, Black people, are held to a different and more lax standard.

Several Facebook pages shared an image of a modified Gadsden flag, with a Black Lives Matter fist and promising we will tread as proof that Portland protesters would take away others rights, including the right to bear arms, if given the chance and thus do not deserve protection themselves. One comment in support of such a post read, I[m] glad to see Im not the only person happy to see these commies being snatched up and dragged away. Yes, I know that this could just as easily be turned around and that we could also be dragged away in broad daylight. But if they arent stopped now, and they do somehow manage to gain complete power, well get dragged away anyways. Better them than us, before its too late.

[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversations newsletter.]

Federal intervention has not stopped the Portland protests from growing, but some analysts expect Trump to increase the response in an attempt to appeal to his supporters as the country heads into the November election. Many people fear that move would spark violence.

The back the blue militia members generally respect law and order enough to not fulfill their threats of violence or criminal action but the back the boog groups may not be so restrained. The back the blue groups may also act if federal action escalates, and members believe they are needed or useful to help defend the interests of average citizens.

Supreme Court ruling a reminder of how badly Native Americans have been treated | Quigley – nj.com

In 1997, Jimcy McGirt, a Moscogee (Creek) Indian, was convicted of raping and sodomizing a four-year-old girl and sentenced to life in prison plus 500 years. Now 71 years old, McGirt has been appealing his conviction for years, and in July the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in his favor. Sort of.

The SCOTUS decision had nothing to do with his guilt or innocence but whether or not the state of Oklahoma had the right to try him for his crimes. Because the acts were committed on whats known as Indian land, McGirt and his lawyers argued that only the federal government could try him for his crime.

The Supreme Courts decision, wildly unpopular in Oklahoma, isnt likely to get McGirt released from prison any time soon but could throw thousands of other prosecutions into appeals chaos.

Just another thing to blame on Andrew Jackson.

As youll recall from your history books, when settlers began arriving here from England and France, they encountered tribes who had been occupying this country for generations. But settlers saw the lands potential for tobacco, cotton and other products and vowed to take them over at any cost.

George Washington wanted to civilize the tribes, converting them to Christianity and European ways, but not surprisingly, many tribes resisted. A few accommodated peacefully, relocated willingly, and got along with their new neighbors. Those Indians Choctaws, Chickasaw, Seminole, Creek and Cherokees-- became known as the civilized tribes.

But as more settlers arrived and wanted more land, other tribes pushed back resulting in all sorts of hostilities from skirmishes to outright massacres. Thousands were killed on both sides, but since the newcomers had better weapons, more troops and laws benefiting only themselves, Indians were the losers.

Jackson had fought in several battles against Indians and definitely thought any land, possessions or rights they had should belong to new Americans. When he became President he determined to get rid of the Indian problem. States joined his crusade, enacting laws limiting Native American sovereignty and rights and encroaching on their lands.

Southern states, in particular, dealt harshly with Native Americans and illegally transferred property rights to white Americans.

In 1830 Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act, which gave the federal government the ability to trade cotton-rich land in the south for barren land in the west. The Act required the government to deal fairly and peacefully with the Native Americans, but they didnt.

In the winter of 1831, soldiers forcibly removed Choctaws from Georgia and Alabama, many bound in chains, and literally walked them to the territory known as Oklahoma. Soon other tribes had to begin the often-fatal walk west, now known as the Trail of Tears. By 1840 tens of thousands of Native Americans had been driven off their lands, forced to cross the Mississippi, and survivors were promised the new lands would remain theirs forever.

Some years later Oklahoma and other territories became states, and residents assumed the old promise meant nothing anymore. Last month the Supreme Court disagreed.

Justice Neil Gorsuch sided with liberal justices, and said, Today we are asked whether the land these treaties promised remains an Indian reservation for purposes of federal criminal law. Because Congress has not said otherwise, we hold the government to its word.

All that really means right now is the McGirt will get a new trial. But in the long run, its a huge reminder of how horribly America treated minorities generations ago and a small reminder of how little things have changed since then.

I dont think Id like Mr. McGirt, but maybe his lawsuit did us all a favor.

Austrias Financial Police continues the fight against illegal gambling activities. A recent report by the Financial Police outlined that illegal gambling is concentrated around large cities. The report also outlined that so far this year, there have been 660 illegal gambling machines confiscated.

Illegal gambling is concentrated in large cities in Austria, says a recent statement by the Financial Police. In an announcement today, the Financial Police in Austria disclosed details on its progress against illegal gambling in the country. According to the statement, there have been some 660 gaming machines confiscated by the Financial Police since the start of this year. On the other hand, there were 278 checks for suspected illegal gambling activities.

Gernot Blmel, finance minister of Austria commented on the subject by congratulating the Finance Police for their success. He outlined that as a result of the preventive actions by the Finance Police, the outstanding illegal gambling activity is not active across the country but rather it is rather concentrated in certain urban areas. Blmel further added that the fight against illegal gambling in the country will continue. The finance minister stressed that the illegal gambling market must be met with strength in order to decrease the number of people which are negatively affected.

According to the report, a spike of illegal gambling activity was observed in the third largest city and capital of the state of Upper Austria Linz. Since the beginning of the year, in the Linz area alone there have been 123 confiscated illegal gambling devices.

In the recent checks for illegal gambling activity, the Financial Police found and confiscated some 38 gambling devices within the state of Upper Austria. In that line of thoughts, since the beginning of the year, in Vienna alone, the Financial Police has issued more than 13 million in fines.

A peculiar case was outlined in the report where 20 illegal gambling machines were confiscated since May from one and the same restaurant. On the other hand, the Finance Police found and confiscated a total of 2 illegal gambling machines from areas which are less populated such as Styria, Vorarlberg and Burgenland.

WE Charity co-founders, Craig and Marc Kielburger, testified before the House of Commons Finance Committee about the now cancelled contract overseeing a summer student grant program. They denied the contract had been awarded because of WEs ties to Liberal politicians. During four hours of questioning, they mentioned the charity had previously worked with NDP and Conservative politicians. The co-founders also talked about their past contracts with the federal government, as well as their financial situation when they took the contract. The brothers said the testimony was a chance to set the record straight which they welcomed. CTV News has more.

A study published in the Royal Societys journal Biological Sciences reports that a shortage of wild bees and domesticated honey bees is causing decreased pollination and yields of some crops across British Columbia and the U.S. The study examined both the pollination of crop flowers as well as crop yields from apples, highbush blueberries, sweet and tart cherries, almonds, pumpkins and watermelon. The study reported that protections for wild bees and a larger investment into honey bees would be beneficial to increase crop yields. Global News has more.

An investigation conducted by Transport Canada has found that a number of employees violated the governments code of values and ethics when they sent emails containing racist and violent language over a decade ago. The email included the link to an offensive parody song that had lyrics with racial stereotypes about travellers wearing turbans. As well, the 10 employees who shared the email worked in the section of Transport Canada that is in charge of the enforcement of Canadas no-fly list, a program which has faced backlash for incorrectly flagging some Canadians. Opposition calls for Sixfields deal to be open to scrutiny but council denies agreement is reached with Cobblers – Northampton Chronicle and Echo

The East Stand at Sixfields is yet to be fully completed.

The leaders of Labour and the Liberal Democrats also called for thorough due diligence to be carried out, after recent media reports that a deal on land next to the East Stand was close to being struck.

The issue was a hot topic of discussion at Mondays full council meeting (July 20), but the council stressed that no agreements were in place, and that it would carry out thorough checks before concluding any deal.

Last month, the BBC reported that a 500,000 deal was close to being struck which would allow the football club to be given an option to buy borough council-owned land next to Sixfields, on condition the East Stand was finished.

It would then see the council sharing the proceeds of any subsequent development with the club. It was also reported that a 3 million cap on the cost of completing the stand was also likely to be part of the deal.

A criminal investigation is still ongoing examining how 10.25 million of taxpayers money, lent by the borough council to the club in 2013 to complete the redevelopment at the stadium, was allegedly misappropriated.

Current Cobblers chairman Kelvin Thomas acquired the club from former chairman David Cardoza in 2015. A spokesman for the club had told the BBC last month: The overriding principle, as it always has been, is the development of the East Stand and that is an agreed point with Northampton Borough Council.

In addition, NBC will need to demonstrate best value for any disposal of the freehold land, which is also accepted by the football club.

Labour leader Councillor Danielle Stone was keen to see mistakes of the past not repeated, and tabled a number of written questions to the councils cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise, Councillor Tim Hadland.

Councillor Stone asked: Can the council confirm that all the details of the Option Agreement including any letters of intent, Memorandum of Understandings and the like will be open to scrutiny and debate by all councillors and the wider public before anything is signed?

Responding, Councillor Hadland said: We can confirm that should there be any deal acceptable to the council we will follow our established governance processes, including formal decision-making by cabinet. This will allow scrutiny by the public and councillors in accordance with our normal procedures.

Liberal Democrat leader Councillor Sally Beardsworth wanted to find out more about the structure of the reported deal, asking: The media reports state a 50/50 split of profits is agreed between NTFC and NBC from the development. Precisely, what expenditure is to be deducted from the top line sale proceeds before determining the actual divisible profit?

Councillor Hadland responded: The terms of any deal have not yet been agreed and discussions are ongoing. The council will comply with its duties to achieve best value for the taxpayers of the town.

The questions were tabled during a week in which all councillors were sent an open letter by the clubs supporters trust urging them to press for full disclosure of the deal so that taxpayers and the clubs supporters would not be ripped off all over again.

The open letter read: We believe it is the intention of those in charge of the negotiations with the owners of the football club to conclude a deal without allowing scrutiny of its details and therefore proper consideration of whether it is in the best interests of council taxpayers and the football clubs supporters.

We urge you to press for full disclosure of the deal in the interests of openness and transparency, which is the very least the long-suffering football fans and council taxpayers of Northampton deserve.

Councillor Stone ended the discussion by saying she was a bit more reassured having been told that opposition parties would be kept in the loop with regular briefings, but added: Rebuilding trust with the supporters is going to be really really important given the history of what has gone on. Speculation is very damaging to everybody, we need to be as open and transparent as we possibly can be and rebuild that trust so that everyone knows what is going on.

Below are the written questions, and answers, in their entirety from Mondays meeting.

Question from Councillor Danielle Stone (Labour leader):

We know the Memorandum of Understanding entered into in November 2015 between Northampton Borough Council and the clubs owners is legally non-binding. But why are none of its commitments being honoured? This includes the commitment of the clubs owners to complete the East Stand from their own funds given to the Council in 2015?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland (Conservative, cabinet member for regeneration and enterprise):

For some time, the football club have been keen to pursue development of land in the area of the Sixfields Stadium, and have put forward ideas for a number of possible development schemes. Although discussions are ongoing between the club and the council there are no agreements in place and any deal must deliver best value for the taxpayer.

The non-binding commitments in the Memorandum of Understanding entered into in November 2015, were made at a point in time and have, where possible been largely honoured.

There was no commitment given in the MoU for the completion of the East Stand. In discussions with NBC, Kelvin Thomas and David Bower [club director] did make commitments at the time to build the East Stand but this was not part of the MoU or any formal binding agreement.

Question from Councillor Danielle Stone:

An article in The Athletic stated that a significant sum of money had changed hands in 2017 when the Chinese owned 5USports acquired control of NTFCs holding company, Northampton Town Ventures Ltd. No receipt of any funds is recorded in the statutory accounts of Ventures or its controlling company at that time, the English registered Fantastical Ltd.

Given the existence of serious questions surrounding this transaction, the wider ethical issue of an English local authority dealing with a company under the ultimate control of an offshore tax haven company in respect of the sale and development of public land, can you confirm that full professional due diligence has been carried out on NTFC and all its connected companies to satisfy the council of their finances, source of funds and the tracing and whereabouts of any Chinese funds?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland:

As with any commercial transaction the council enters into, appropriate checks will be undertaken at the relevant time to ensure that the councils interests are protected. These checks vary in their scale according to the size and type of agreement, but we can confirm that thorough checks will be undertaken in relation to any transaction around Sixfields.

Question from Councillor Danielle Stone:

Kelvin Thomas in response to the recent media reports said in a BBC Northampton interview on June 25 that he expects any new agreement between the club and the borough to be open to public scrutiny. Can the council confirm that all the details of the option agreement, including any letters of intent, MoUs and the like will be open to scrutiny and debate by all councillors and the wider public before anything is signed?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland:

We can confirm that should there be any deal acceptable to the council we will follow our established governance processes, including formal decision-making by cabinet. This will allow scrutiny by the public and councillors in accordance with our normal procedures.

Question from Councillor Sally Beardsworth (Liberal Democrat leader):

This agreement is being negotiated at a time when the CPS has not yet filed charges and the KPMG [auditors] report is not finalised. What protocols are being followed regarding delegation of authority to councillors and officers to agree terms and involving the section 151 officer [chief finance officer]?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland:

Any agreement will be made in line with the councils formal procedures with recommendations being taken to cabinet for a decision to be made. Relevant officers, including the section 151 officer will be involved in the normal way. Full due diligence will be undertaken of any agreement in relation to this matter with appropriate levels of scrutiny.

Question from Councillor Sally Beardsworth:

What protections will be contained in any agreement for NTFC (meaning its supporters as distinct from its owners) concerning its original leasehold land and the future retention within the club of income from the development rather than it being moved through the club to repay debt to the clubs owners?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland:

There have been no changes to the agreement with CDNL (County Developments (Northampton) Ltd) since the agreements entered into in 2015. Any new agreement will need to consider and undertake the obligations relating to the site as an Asset of Community Value. It will be up to NTFC, which is a separate legal entity to decide how it allocates its finances relating to its business.

Question from Councillor Sally Beardsworth:

The media reports state a 50/50 split of profits is agreed between NTFC and NBC from the development. Precisely, what expenditure is to be deducted from the top line sale proceeds before determining the actual divisible profit?

Response from Councillor Tim Hadland:

The terms of any deal have not yet been agreed and discussions are ongoing. The council will comply with its duties to achieve best value for the taxpayers of the town.

Oklahomas Gaming Tribes Won Dispute over Compacts in Federal Court – GamblingNews.com

The Supreme Court in Oklahoma ruled in favor of the tribal gaming compacts in the state. This effectively confirmed that the tribal compacts were renewed back on January 1, 2020. Following the courts ruling, Governor Stitt shared his disappointment.

A dispute over gaming compacts in Oklahoma ongoing since last year is coming to an end. Yesterday, July 28, US District Court Judge Timothy DeGiusti ruled in favor of the gaming compacts, supporting Oklahomas gaming tribes that those compacts were automatically renewed in January 2020 for a period of 15 years. This may be the final chapter of the dispute which was raised by Governor Kevin Stitt.

It all began last year, when Governor Stitt wanted to negotiate new gaming fees for the tribes gaming compacts. Basically, the Governor wanted to raise more revenue from taxes on gambling in the state. This however caught the attention of the tribes who disagreed. The tribes in Oklahoma earn approximately $4.5 billion a year. Of that total, under the current compact, they pay exclusive fees of 4% to 10% to the state.

According to the tribes in Oklahoma, unless a new agreement was reached, the compact would automatically renew. The tribes in the state were referring to Part 15 B of the compact, where it is stated that: the Compact shall automatically renew for successive additional fifteen-year terms.

After that, Governor Stitt did not agree on the auto-renewal of the compacts, which resulted in Choctaw, Chickasaw and Cherokee nations to file a lawsuit in federal court. Following the recent ruling in favor of the tribes, Judge DeGiusti wrote in a statement: The Court is not persuaded by this argument and rejects the States narrow view of governmental action, which is inconsistent with a common understanding of that term. He added: The Court finds that these technical definitions are not required by the Compacts and their use would be inconsistent with federal contract principles. Although the ruling is final, both sides involved will have until August 7 to raise any other concerns they might be having.

Following the announcement of the courts ruling, Governor Stitt expressed his disappointment with the decision. In a statement, he said: It confirms my fears, and the fears of many fellow Oklahomans, that the State entered into a poorly negotiated deal and now we must bear the cost of this mistake. He further added: The federal court determined that the 2004 Gaming Compact auto renewed for 15 years because of an action taken by an agencys unelected board to reissue licenses for gaming at horse racing tracks.

With that in mind, the Supreme Court in Oklahoma also ruled that the two compacts signed by Governor Stitt are invalid. The compacts, signed with the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and Comanche Nation were aiming at allowing sports betting. However, sports betting in the state hasnt received the green light from the Oklahomas legislature.

In contrast, the decision of the court was met kindly by the tribal nations. In a statement, Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. expressed his excitement about the ruling. Hoskin noted that the Cherokee Nation is pleased with the ruling. He pointed out that the Supreme Court had only affirmed what the tribal nations have known since the beginning the fact that the gaming compact with the state of Oklahoma was renewed on January 1, 2020 for 15 years.

Hoskin continued by outlining that the tribal gaming in the state will continue to contribute towards education, health care, communities and infrastructure. In conclusion, Hoskin said that the compact remains the same which means that the tribal gaming can continue to work towards: a relationship built on respect with Gov. Stitt in the future.

GOLFICITY BETS: The 2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Gambling Guide – Golficity

2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational Tournament Preview

Its been a fast and frenetic return for golf since the restrictions were lifted, and were about to go up another gear as we enter the business end of the campaign.

Were about to go into major season, with the PGA Championship next week and the U.S. Open and The Masters to come in the next few months, and theres also the climax of the FedExCup to consider.

This week, we have the first of the WGC events since golfs return, and the St Jude Invitational is highly anticipated this year given the quality of players on show and the narratives that will inform the action.

Embed from Getty Images

Jon Rahm will be looking to cement his status as the number one player in the world he opened up with a round of 62 here 12 months ago, while others like Justin Thomas, Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay will be hoping to hit form heading into this juicy part of the season.

Lets face it some courses on the PGA TOUR are wholly unforgettable.

But others, like TPC Southwind, have the ability to test out every aspect of the best players in the world theyll need classy ball striking, efficient rescue play around the greens and a sure putting hand to thrive.

We hope that the weather doesnt soften the greens too much and ruin the complexity of the assignment, because TPC Southwind is a fun test that challenges the approach play and chipping of the best in the business thanks to the rapid, smaller-than-average Bermuda greens.

Some of the hole feature quite pronounced doglegs too, so accurate driving is key, but there is some fun to be had on a couple of drivable Par 4s too and a Sawgrass-style island green Par 3.

With Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson on the winners roll of honor at TPC Southwind, you might think this is a standard bomb-and-gouge style contest, but with wet, tangly rough just whacking the ball aimlessly off the peg isnt going to cut the mustard sorry, Bryson.

This is a golf course that suits Jon Rahms game just fine, but even so were going to take a chance that Justin Thomas can outlast the Spaniard this week.

Top of the FedExCup standings, theres no shortage of motivation for JT right now and you can tell hes hungry to add win number 13 to his collection as soon as possible he lost out in a play-off at the Workday Charity Open you may recall.

Embed from Getty Images

Adverse conditions wont affect Thomas, who is an outstanding scrambler, and indeed there is a certain familiarity to this part of the world for a young man who was raised in Kentucky and who was schooled in Alabama.

There are some high-quality campaigners in the field this week, but none are striking the ball quite as well as Xander Schauffele right now.

Remember how tough the conditions were at Muirfield Village for the Memorial Tournament? X-man ranked second for Strokes Gained Off-the-Tee there and first for Greens in Regulation, which really was an outstanding effort.

Hes one of the few players on Tour without any weaknesses in his game, and already at a young age Xander is developing the profile of a prolific winner who can claim multiple majors. WGCs arent too bad on the resum either.

The fact that theres no cut this week could play into the hands of Jordan Spieth, who will feel some off the pressure lifted for that fact and who can relax back in familiar territory back down south.

No cut events are interesting for Spieth because we know he can connect birdies and shoot super-low numbers, so even with a bad round in the mix he can still get up the leaderboard.

Embed from Getty Images

Even as his game bounces between finding some form and otherwise, Spieth has continued to be a excellent grinder and chipper, and if his famous putting stroke can find some confidence he can do really well this week.

In form heading into the event, TPC Southwind could not suit Mackenzie Hughes any better.

The Canadian has banked some big checks in the past couple of weeks, with T3 at the Travelers Championship backed by T6 in the Memorial.

What do those events have in common? Theres some tight sightlines off the tee and the smaller-than-average greens run at a fair pace, and that lets Hughes enviable short game shine.

These are not good times for Dustin Johnson, who returns to a course he loves but in a state of some disrepair.

He was way out of the mix at the Memorial, missing the cut by a country mile, and in withdrawing from the 3M Open it was perhaps proof positive that, for now at least, DJ is playing all the wrong tunes.

Your sportsbook will offer different match-up options, but the one we really like is Matt Fitzpatrick, who will be available at a meaty odds-against price in this h2h.

The Brit boasts an elite-level chipping game and hes in decent form too with two good outings Muirfield Village. Fitzpatrick was T4 here last year as well.

Its an easy play this and feels like kicking a man when hes down, but Brooks Koepkas formline of MC-62-MC since the restart tells its own story.

Hes leaking shots on the green left, right and center, and while it would be typically Brooks to come out and win this week, were happy to put our money where our mouth is and say that he wont.

The operation of a sustainable marketplace, with cared-for customers and practically excluded minors and at-risk audiences, whilst raising valuable taxation revenues for society, predictably, is the perfect way to support our shared mission across A GAME ABOVE and Beanstalk: the customer experience, Steen Madsen, CEO of A GAME ABOVE, said.

Player protection and the operation of a sustainable, responsible industry, onshore and subject to regulation, are, in our view, simply facets of the customer experience, overall, Steen Madsen added.

The product will allow governments and regulators to establish a regulatory ring-fence for all licensed and soon-to-be licensed markets, which A GAME ABOVE and Beanstalk hope will prevent the failure to fund good causes and the outright theft of legitimate tax yield by illicit black market operators.

After an intensive period of research and development, were pleased to be announcing the launch of Yield Sec. Across most markets today, those at risk of gambling-related harm do not know where to effectively turn when facing a problem, Jack Symons, Co-Founder and Director of Beanstalk, said.

Escaping a spiral of continued, compulsive play is almost impossible when no gambling cessation helpline or tool has historically worked to effectively exclude the black market. Yield Sec will achieve this and provide for meaningful player protection. Caring for the vulnerable is ineffective if we only place conditions upon licensed operators but then leave the unregulated black market openly available, Jack Symons added.

Yield Sec developers stated that an effective black-market monitoring solution is needed during a time of disruption across multiple markets, in which government and regulators aim to harmonise regulatory measures balancing player protection and taxation yield measures.

Bill Pascrell, III, President, North America for A GAME ABOVE, said: For governments and regulators, Yield Sec is a tool for our time and the sustainable future of regulated online betting and gaming.

Despite the loss of nearly all professional sport over the COVID-19 crisis, it is clear that black-market betting and gaming sites and apps benefited enormously at no other point in history have we seen the broad presence and availability of so many unlicensed, unregulated offerings, none of which pay any tax, protect any players or provide for those at risk.

In targeting regulated territories, these black market operators are effectively stealing taxpayers money and avoiding the contributions that licensed, responsible operators make to good causes and the prevention of gambling-related harm.
