New insights into wound healing – Newswise

Newswise When we get a wound on our skin, the cells in our bodies quickly mobilize to repair it. While it has been known how cells heal wounds and how scars form, a team led by researchers from Washington University in St. Louis has determined for the first time how the process begins, which may provide new insight into wound healing, fibrosis and cancer metastasis.

The team, led by Delaram Shakiba, a postdoctoral fellow from the NSF Science and Technology Center for Engineering Mechanobiology (CEMB) at the McKelvey School of Engineering, discovered the way fibroblasts, or common cells in connective tissue, interact with the extracellular matrix, which provides structural support as well as biochemical and biomechanical cues to cells. The team uncovered a recursive process that goes on between the cells and their environment as well as structures in the cells that were previously unknown.

Results of the research were published in ACS Nano on July 28. Senior authors on the paper are Guy Genin, the Harold and Kathleen Faught Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the McKelvey School of Engineering, and Elliot Elson, professor emeritus of biochemistry and molecular biophysics at the School of Medicine.

Clinical efforts to prevent the progression of fibrocontractile diseases, such as scarring and fibrosis, have been largely unsuccessful, in part because the mechanisms that cells use to interact with the protein fibers around them are unclear, Shakiba said. We found that fibroblasts use completely different mechanisms in the early and I think the most treatable stages of these interactions, and that their responses to drugs can therefore be the opposite of what they would be in the later stages.

Genin, who is the co-director of the CEMB, said the process has stymied mechanobiology researchers for some time.

Researchers in the field of mechanobiology thought that cells pulled in collagen from the extracellular matrix by reaching out with long protrusions, grabbing it and pulling it back, Genin said. We discovered that this wasnt the case. A cell has to push its way out through collagen first, then instead of grabbing on, it essentially shoots tiny hairs, or filopodia, out of the sides of its arms, pulls in collagen that way, then retracts.

Now that they understand this process, Genin said, they can control the shape that a cell takes.

With our colleagues at CEMB at the University of Pennsylvania, we were able to validate some mathematical models to go through the engineering process, and we now have the basic rules that cells follow, he said. We can now begin to design specific stimuli to direct a cell to behave in a certain way in building a tissue-engineered structure.

The researchers learned they could control the cell shape in two ways: First, by controlling the boundaries around it, and second, by inhibiting or upregulating particular proteins involved in the remodeling of the collagen.

Fibroblasts pull the edges of a wound together, causing it to contract or close up. Collagen in the cells then remodels the extracellular matrix to fully close the wound. This is where mechanobiology comes into play.

Theres a balance between tension and compression inside a cell that is newly exposed to fibrous proteins, Genin said. There is tension in actin cables, and by playing with that balance, we can make these protrusions grow extremely long, Genin said. We can stop the remodeling from occurring or we can increase it.

The team used a 3D-mapping technique the first time it has been applied to collagen along with a computational model to calculate the 3D strain and stress fields created by the protrusions from the cells. As cells accumulated collagen, tension-driven remodeling and alignment of collagen fibers led to the formation of collagen tracts. This requires cooperative interactions among cells, through which cells can interact mechanically.

New methods of microscopy, tissue engineering and biomechanical modeling greatly enhance our understanding of the mechanisms by which cells modify and repair the tissues they populate, Elson said. Fibrous cellular structures generate and guide forces that compress and reorient their extracellular fibrous environment. This raises new questions about the molecular mechanisms of these functions and how cells regulate the forces they exert and how they govern the extent of matrix deformation.

Wound healing is a great example of how these processes are important in a physiologic way, Genin said. Well be able to come up with insight in how to train cells not to excessively compact the collagen around them.

WATCH LIVE: Heads Of Amazon, Apple, Facebook And Google Testify On Big Tech’s Power – Red River Radio

Updated at 6:35 p.m. ET

Are Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple "emperors of the online economy" that stifle competition and hurt consumers? Not surprisingly, the tech giants' chief executives told Congress: absolutely not. The concern that too much power is concentrated in too few companies is unfounded, they said Wednesday.

Does Apple punish its rivals on the App Store to score more customers?

Democratic Rep. Lucy McBath of Georgia drew attention to Apple's Screen Time app, a service allowing parents to limit their kids' phone use.

When Apple introduced the app in 2018, competing parental control apps, such as OurPact, were booted from the App Store for not meeting Apple's safety requirements.

Apple CEO Tim Cook told McBath those fears were justified.

"We were concerned, congresswoman, about the privacy and security of kids," Cook said, noting the app was vulnerable to third-party takeovers. "So we were worried about their safety."

But McBath said House investigators discovered that rival parental control apps that were kicked out of the App Store were readmitted six months later without making significant privacy overhauls.

"Of course, six months is truly an eternity for small businesses to be shut down, even worse if all the while a larger competitor is actually taking away customers," she said.

McBath pointed to an email in which an Apple employee responded to a mother complaining about the removal of parental control apps. The Apple representative suggested that the mother download Apple's Screen Time.

Cook said that "there are many reasons why" an app may not meet the App Store's guidelines, dismissing the suggestion that Apple squashed its competition to favor its own service.

McBath referenced a second example, this one involving the publisher Random House, which said Apple held back the introduction of its app while pushing its own similar product.

"Even some of the largest companies in the country fear your power. Our evidence suggests that your company has used its power to harm your rivals and boost your own business," McBath said.

"This is fundamentally unfair," she said. "Ultimately, it reduces the competition and the choices made to consumers, and that's a great concern to all of us."

CEO vows Google won't play favorites in 2020 election

Google CEO Sundar Pichai faced a barrage of questions from Rep. Jim Jordan. The Ohio Republican said he's concerned that Google will tailor its search engine to give a leg up to presumed Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden over President Trump in searches related to the November election.

When Jordan asked Pichai for a promise to Americans that Google will not favor Biden in the 2020 election, Pichai said, "We don't do any work to politically tilt anything one way or another."

Jordan persisted with the same question.

Pichai eventually agreed to make a commitment that Google will not tilt its features to help Biden and that the search engine will not be used to silence conservatives.

"Yeah, you have my commitment. It's always been true, and we'll continue to conduct ourselves in a neutral way," Pichai said.

That line of inquiry was far afield from the purpose of the hearing, noted Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., saying she'd like to turn the focus back to antitrust, rather than "fringe conspiracy theories."

This remark incited Jordan, who interrupted Scanlon, and led to a screaming match between Jordan and the Democratic leadership about following the rules of the hearing.

"When someone comes after my motives for asking questions," Jordan shouted, "I should get a chance to respond."

Does Amazon use sellers' data to help itself?

The first inquiry for Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos finally arrived from Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., some two hours into the hearing. Jayapal zeroed in on the subcommittee's central concern about Amazon: Does the company use the data it collects from other sellers on the platform for its benefit?

"I can't answer that question yes or no," Bezos said. "We have a policy against using seller-specific data to aid our private label business, but I can't guarantee you that that policy has never been violated."

Committee lawmakers have previously accused Amazon of "lack of candor" about how it might be using other sellers' data to give an edge to its own business, something Amazon executives have, until now, denied was happening.

Critics have made the case that Amazon employees may have used such data to create the retailer's own private-label products, which Bezos told lawmakers the company was still investigating.

Jayapal noted that Amazon has access to information about consumer habits, sellers' pricing and inventory data, a trove of details that could be ripe for abuse if used to make business decisions about Amazon's own products.

"You can set the rules of the game for your competitors, but not actually follow those same rules for yourself," Jayapal said.

"You have access to data that your competitors do not have," she continued, adding that if Amazon was "continuously monitoring" such data to make sure that other sellers "are never going to get big enough that they can compete with you that is actually the concern that the committee has."

Google's Pichai is pressed on being "the gateway to the Internet"

Rep. David Cicilline, D-R.I., the subcommittee chairman, spent all of his first five-minute block of questions on Google the company at most immediate risk of antitrust action. The Department of Justice is reportedly preparing to sue the company over its advertising business, and could be joined by state attorneys general who have also been investigating Google.

Cicilline pressed CEO Pichai on whether Google's business model presents a conflict of interest, because it has an incentive to give search results that keep users on its own site rather than anywhere else on the Internet.

"As Google became the gateway to the Internet, it began to abuse its power," Cicilline said.

Pichai responded that Google "always focuses on providing users the most relevant information." Cicilline appeared annoyed at Pichai's answers, cutting him off several times to move on to another question.

A long wait for Bezos

Over an hour and a half into the hearing, Bezos appearing in Congress for the first time, whose company employs 1 million workers and has more than 150 million paying subscribers had yet to receive a single question.

His presence was slated to become a powerful accomplishment of the House Judiciary Committee, but the early questioning had left him muted on the live video feed, reaching for some snacks.

The hearing, meanwhile, took a 10-minute break to fix a technical problem "with one of our witnesses."

Did Facebook buy Instagram to neutralize a competitor?

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., pressed Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on why his company bought Instagram for $1 billion back in 2012. That's a key part of competition questions facing the social media giant. Critics accuse Facebook of buying or copying rivals such as Instagram and WhatsApp to squash competition.

Nadler said in its investigation, the committee got documents from Facebook in which Zuckerberg discussed "neutralizing a competitor" as a reason to pursue Instagram.

"Facebook saw Instagram as a threat that could potentially siphon business away from Facebook. And so rather than compete with it, Facebook bought it," Nadler said.

Zuckerberg pointed out that the Federal Trade Commission OK'd the merger at the time. "With hindsight it probably looks obvious that Instagram would have reached the scale that it has today, but at the time it was far from obvious," he said.

Cicilline interjected to say that the "failures" of the FTC in 2012 do not mean it was not a violation of antitrust law.

Panel chairman: Under coronavirus, Big Tech "likely to emerge stronger and more powerful"

Up first was Cicilline, chairman of the antitrust subcommittee that was holding the hearing. He has been the driving force behind the yearlong investigation of Big Tech.

In his opening remarks, he described the dominance of each company: Amazon in online shopping, Apple in smartphones and apps, Facebook in social media and Google in search and ads. And he pointed out that thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, all four "are likely to emerge stronger and more powerful than ever before."

"As American families shift more of their work, shopping, and communication online, these giants stand to profit," Cicilline said. "Locally owned businesses, meanwhile mom and pop stores on Main Street face an economic crisis unlike any in recent history."

The committee's investigation has turned up a pattern among the tech giants, he said. They control access to information and marketplaces, use that control to "surveil" rivals and protect their power, and favor their own businesses.

"Simply put: They have too much power," Cicilline said. For consumers, he said, this is reminiscent of previous American monopolies: railroads, oil and telephone companies, and even another tech giant Microsoft.

"This investigation also goes to the heart of whether we, as a people, govern ourselves, or whether we let ourselves be governed by private monopolies," he said. "Our founders would not bow before a king. Nor should we bow before the emperors of the online economy."

Jordan: "Big Tech is out to get conservatives"

Wednesday's hearing was supposed to be about Big Tech's power and market dominance. But Republicans tried to make it about something else: accusations that online platforms are biased against conservatives.

"Big Tech is out to get conservatives," Jordan, the Ohio Republican, said in his fiery opening statement.

Jordan then rapidly read aloud headlines making claims that conservative-leaning publications and voices had been suppressed or censored on Facebook and Google.

He also mentioned Twitter, even though it was not part of the hearing. Jordan said conservative members of Congress were "shadow banned" on Twitter. He said Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey said it was a glitch.

"If I had a nickel for every time I heard it was just a glitch, I wouldn't be as wealthy as our witnesses, but I'd be doing all right," Jordan said.

"We all think the free market is great. We think competition is great. We love the fact that these are American companies. But what's not great is censoring people, censoring conservatives and trying to impact elections," Jordan said. "If it doesn't end, there has to be consequences."

Before Jordan's remarks, Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., also mentioned the belief, strongly contested by large tech companies, that conservatives do not get a fair shake by the online platforms, calling reports of conservative censorship troubling.

"Conservatives are consumers, too, and they need the protection of antitrust laws," Sensenbrenner said.

The hearing erupted in chaos after Jordan asked that Rep. Mike Johnson of the House Judiciary's Constitution subcommittee be allowed to participate in the hearing. The request was denied.

Jordan then repeatedly interrupted Cicilline, the antitrust subcommittee chairman, who was attempting to introduce Bezos.

"We're talking about people's liberties here," Jordan said over Cicilline.

"Put your mask on," Jordan was told.

Trump tweets: "Bring fairness to Big Tech"

The hearing got underway after an hourlong delay. First up were opening statements from the top members of the committee and the four CEOs. Then lawmakers each got five minutes to question Bezos, Cook, Pichai and Zuckerberg. All four joined remotely via video.

The focus of the hearing, and the committee's investigation, was meant to be about competition but lawmakers seemed unable to resist bringing up other complaints about tech companies, from the spread of misinformation to alleged anti-conservative bias.

That also was the message coming from the White House, where President Trump repeatedly has accused tech companies of treating him unfairly. Shortly after noon, he tweeted: "If Congress doesn't bring fairness to Big Tech, which they should have done years ago, I will do it myself with Executive Orders. In Washington, it has been ALL TALK and NO ACTION for years, and the people of our Country are sick and tired of it!"

Our original story by Bobby Allyn continues:

Amid a time of rising tensions with China, some of the powerful CEOs will suggest that too much regulation could provide an opportunity for Chinese tech firms to gain a global toehold, according to opening remarks from the tech leaders released by the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee.

"We believe in values democracy, competition, inclusion and free expression that the American economy was built on," Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will tell lawmakers, according to his prepared opening statement. "China is building its own version of the internet focused on very different ideas, and they are exporting their vision to other countries."

Amazon's Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person who will be making his first appearance in front of Congress, will bring in his personal story of being adopted by an immigrant father when he was 4 years old and spending his summers on his grandparents' ranch in Texas, saying his upbringing instilled in him a work ethic that has helped Amazon prosper.

Amazon's rise to becoming the largest online retailer, Bezos will say, is an achievement only made possible in America. But Walmart, he will point out, is still twice the size of Amazon.

"We did not start out as the largest marketplace eBay was many times our size. It was only by focusing on supporting sellers and giving them the best tools we could invent that we were able to succeed and eventually surpass eBay," Bezos says in his released testimony.

Google's Sundar Pichai will steer attention to the other ways people navigate the online world, even though 90% of Internet searches happen on Google.

"People have more ways to search for information than ever before and increasingly this is happening outside the context of only a search engine," Pichai plans to tell the House panel. "You can ask Alexa a question from your kitchen; read your news on Twitter; ask friends for information via WhatsApp; and get recommendations on Snapchat or Pinterest."

Apple's Tim Cook will echo the appeals to patriotism raised among the other tech CEOs by touting how Apple's strength, becoming the most valuable company in the world, represents success "only possible in this country."

He will also join the other tech leaders by arguing that Apple has plenty of competition.

"The smartphone market is fiercely competitive, and companies like Samsung, LG, Huawei and Google have built very successful smartphone businesses offering different approaches," Cook will say in his opening statement to lawmakers.

Whether members of the House Judiciary Committee's antitrust subcommittee buy these arguments over the course of what is set to be an hours-long spectacle is another matter.

And it remains to be seen if the public will gain new insight into the tech companies, and whether lawmakers can pin down answers from the typically cautious technology executives.

The CEOs will be testifying via video at the same time, rather than one by one, a format seen as taking the heat off any individual executive and something the companies requested.

While the hearing centers on questions around market dominance, lawmakers are free to pepper the executives with questions about any topic.

The anything-goes format will likely divert the hearing away from antitrust and delve into issues such as perceived anti-conservative bias on social media platforms, a common Republican refrain. And Democrats, often raising concern about foreign election meddling, may inquire about possible efforts to influence the vote online ahead of the November election.

More on-topic probing could involve issues such as acquisitions that have grown the reach of Big Tech.

For instance, Facebook has acquired nearly 90 companies, including Instagram, WhatsApp and more recently, Giphy, a tool for creating animated images.

However it goes, one thing is certain: It will be a day for the history books.

The hearing is the first time all four technology leaders have testified together, as scrutiny over the companies' nearly $5 trillion market power draws intensifying scrutiny in Washington.

The CEOs will be on the defensive as House lawmakers grill them about whether the business empire each company has created has resulted in monopoly-like dominance that distorts the marketplace in their favor.

Prince William reveals his bodyguard posed as a SNIPER to scare football rival – Express

The Duke of Cambridge confessed that when he played football everyone wanted to break my legs. And his solution was to have one of his protection officers point a laser pen at one of his rivals, but the scare only kept him away for ten minutes.

The future king shared the anecdote, along with some embarrassing stories during an appearance on BBC Radio Five Lives That Peter Crouch Podcast.

During the laid-back discussion, William and the former footballer and podcast host drank beer and even had a curry delivered to the studio.

William also took the opportunity to talk about Heads Up, his mental health initiative.

The campaign focuses on urging football fans to talk about their feelings in order to improve their mental health.

The podcast was recorded before lockdown started and it contains a catch-up video call from earlier this month.

Speaking of the mischievous prank, William said: A long time ago, I got one of my policemen to take a laser pen out with them.

And I got him to red mark, red dot one of the players.

I was about 15 at the time, I said, see, hes following you, following you.

Mr Crouch asked him if he was pretending to have a sniper on him.

The Duke said: Exactly. It put him off for about, you know, ten minutes.

The Heads Up campaign is a joint collaboration between Heads Together and the Football Association, which the Duke is president of.

He hopes the initiative will help show the world that our mental health is just as important as our physical health.

During a speech to delegates on the opening of the campaign, William said: We wouldnt think twice to ask a mate how he was doing after he broke an arm or an ankle.

We wouldnt hesitate to talk about our routine at the gym, or even our need to make it a bit more regular.

But when it comes to our mental health, we and, by we, I mean men in particular often have nothing to say at all.

When we see a friend that looks down, too many of us dont know how to ask if hes okay. When we ourselves feel down, we are often ashamed to say we need help.

And when we know we need help, we dont know where to start.

The consequences of this silence confusion, stigma, and even shame have reached a crisis point in the UK.

At its worst, it has led to appalling rates of suicide in this country the leading cause of death for men under 45.

Every day, failing to tackle mental health means that we are not reaching our potential at work. When you struggle in silence, you cannot give it your all.

Failing to tackle our mental health means we are often unwittingly passing on our silent suffering to our children, who need us to take our mental health seriously to play our full role.

He added: We are here today to take a big step in shattering this silence. We are going to use one of the most powerful, unifying forces in our society football to start the biggest ever conversation on mental health.

Heads Up will show men we all have mental health just like we have physical health. Building on the amazing attitude that led England to the World Cup semi-finals, it will show us all mental fitness is just as important as physical fitness.

Thin Red Line Rolling Rally supporting firefighter flag is planned in Newton on Thursday – The Boston Globe

Supporters of allowing Newton firefighters to display a Thin Red Line flag at the Nonantum fire station plan to hold a rolling rally from the fire house to City Hall Thursday, organizers said on Facebook.

The flag, which firefighters displayed in tribute to fallen comrades, flew for more than two years at Fire Station 4 before it was ordered removed in June.

Mayor Ruthanne Fuller issued an order to department heads that allows only US flags and Newton banners to be displayed on city buildings. Her decision led hundreds to protest at the station in June.

Organizers of that protest are now preparing a rally that will travel from Fire Station 4 in Nonantum to City Hall, where they will deliver a petition that calls for the flag to be restored at the fire house, according to a Facebook post.

Participants in the rolling rally are being asked to gather at 4 p.m. Thursday in the parking lot across the street from the Nonantum fire house, according to the post.

The demonstration will begin at 4:30 p.m. and travel along Crafts, Washington, and Walnut streets, before arriving at City Hall at about 5 p.m. the post said.

Please line the route and wave your red line flags! the post said.

The group also posted photos of signs supporting the flag that read Honor the firefighters.

Fuller has previously said her decision was not about the firefighters flag, which is a tribute that she supports.

The order she issued in June is about not putting the City in a position of censoring/endorsing which banners and ideas put forward by our employees will be on the sides of our buildings, a city spokeswoman has said.

City councilors have also called on the mayor to reverse the decision, and Local 863, which represents firefighters, has filed a complaint with the states Department of Labor Relations.

Fuller has offered to fly the firefighter flag on a special ceremonial pole at Newton City Hall. In a Facebook post earlier this month, rally organizers said they considered this a thoughtful gesture, but declined.

Our goal is to have the flag put back in Newton Fire Station 4, organizers wrote.

John McNamara, manager of the 1986 Red Sox, dies at 88 – CBS Sports

Former minor-league player and Boston Red Sox manager John McNamara, who managed the club to the 1986 American League pennant, died on Tuesday, his family confirmed to the Boston Globe. He was 88.

McNamara's managerial career spanned three decades and six teams, including two stints with the Angels. He managed the Athletics (1969-70), Padres (1974-77), Reds (1979-82), Angels (1983-84), Red Sox (1985-88), Indians (1990-91), and the Angels again on an interim basis (1996). McNamara also coached in the minors and worked as a scout.

Under McNamara, the Red Sox came back from a 3-1 series deficit to beat the Angels and advance to the World Series in 1986. He was criticized for a series of questionable moves in Game 6 of the World Series, including removing Roger Clemens for a pinch-hitter and leaving a hobbled Billy Buckner at first base.

Beyond baseball, McNamara touched many players and personnel with his kindness and the demand that people be treated fairly. Reggie Jackson thanked McNamara during his Hall of Fame speech in 1967. McNamara managed Jackson in the minors.

"I learned to understand friendship and sensitivity from a very special friend by the name of John McNamara,'' Jackson said. "He was my manager, and he would not allow the team to eat in a restaurant where I was not allowed to eat. I always wondered why we ate sandwiches on the bus and made only essential pit stops. I understood care from that. I'll always remember you, John, for your dignity and sensitivity and for stepping up at a time when very few did.''

McNamara was named AL Manager of the Year in 1986. He retired with a career 1,160-1,233 (.485) record and had his most success with the Reds (279-244) and Red Sox (279-273).

Maryland Fishing Report July 29 – maryland.gov

July 29, 2020

White perch are a perfect species to target while fishing with your kids. Dylan Tawney caught these two nice white perch while fishing with his family. Photo by Andrew Tawney

Hot and dry weather continues across Maryland. These conditions put heat-related stress on the summer striped bass population, especially in the upper Chesapeake Bay. We ask anglers to focus their fishing on early morning hours, or target other species during the heat wave. Throughout Marylands warmest months, the departments online striped bass fishing advisory forecast provides a seven-day outlook to help anglers reduce striped bass mortality during the summer fishing season.

On July 30 at noon the Maryland Department of Natural Resources is hosting our fourth Maryland Fishing Roundtable webinar on summer fishing. This week, the Maryland Fishing Report team including Maryland recreational fisheries specialist Erik Zlokovitz, Tom Parham of DNRs Eyes on the Bay, and biologist Steve Doctor will give tips on fishing in the Ocean City area. You can join the discussion through a link on the departments online calendar.

All anglers can feel free to send any pictures of your catches to fishingreports.dnr@maryland.gov for possible inclusion in our fishing report or the daily Anglers Log.

Expect another repeat of the last few weeks with warm, sunny skies, a chance of thunderstorms, and low winds most of the week. Main Chesapeake Bay surface water temperatures have risen to the mid 80s or higher. These warm waters and corresponding low oxygen areas are appearing from Swan Point down to the mouth of the Potomac.

These hot, calm conditions will continue to warm surface waters and limit oxygen being recharged to the deeper waters by wind mixing, increasing the chance of algal blooms. This will result in gamefish remaining at similar locations on cooler river mouths or main bay structure but moving to slightly shallower depths, just above the Dont Fish Below this Depth mark and maximum suitable oxygen depth, in the coolest water available.

The coolest, oxygenated water is found in the deeper waters from Pooles Island down to the Virginia state line. The other way to find cooler water is to fish the shallows at first light when surface water temperatures can be several degrees cooler. As always, best fishing areas could be further refined by intersecting these cool, oxygenated areas with underwater points, hard bottom, drop-offs, and large schools of baitfish.

Expect reduced water clarity from algal blooms along the upper western shore rivers including the Bush, Back, and Gunpowder rivers. In addition, water clarity in the upper Patuxent and Wicomico rivers and Colonial Beach will also be reduced from algal blooms. To see the latest water clarity conditions, check Eyes on the Bay Satellite Maps.

Expect normal flows all week from most of Marylands rivers and streams. There will be above average tidal currents all week as a result of a full moon Aug. 3.

For more detailed and up-to-date fishing conditions in your area of the bay, be sure to check out Click Before You Cast. Get regular updates on Marylands waters sent to your inbox with our Eyes on the Bay newsletter. Sign up online.

The Conowingo Dam remains on a late afternoon power generation water release, with low flow in the mornings due to abnormally dry conditions. The area below the dam is one of the best places in Maryland to target large flathead catfish; fish up to 55 pounds have been caught here in the past two years.

Fishing for blue catfish continues to be very good at the Conowingo Dam and in the lower Susquehanna River and other tidal rivers. Channel catfish are abundant in all of the regions tidal rivers. Catfish can be caught on fresh cut baits, soft crab, chicken livers, clam snouts, and worms.

White perch should provide steady action in the upper bay into August and September. Many anglers are finding a lot of small perch in some areas but a few big fish can be found with time and effort. The usual small spinners, spinnerbaits, and 1/16 to 1/8-ounce lead heads with Mr. Twister grubs on light spinning tackle all catch fish. Pieces of bloodworm, grass shrimp, wild seafood shrimp, and small minnows are all good baits, especially when fishing around docks and pilings. Medium-sized minnows fished under a bobber around shoreline structure will often catch a large grade of perch.

The usual bottom fishing areas for saltwater panfish spot, perch and croaker should be productive during the next few weeks. Spot and white perch can be found on hard bottom areas, shell bottom, oyster bars, or shoals off Sandy Point State Park beach, the mouth of the Magothy, Bay Bridge pilings, and the Severn River. White perch can also be found at the Snake Reef, Belvidere Shoal, and the 7-foot and 9-foot knolls. We continue to see small croaker in the Severn River, South River, and other areas, but most are sub-legal. Hopefully these small croaker under 8 inches are a good sign for the future of the fishery.

We are asking anglers to avoid targeting striped bass during this heat wave. However, if you do target striped bass, remember that you must use non-offset circle hooks at all time when chumming or livelining. We also advise using lures with single, barbless hooks to make releasing fish easier, and care must be taken when handling fish. Never use a rag while unhooking a striped bass this will rub off their protective slime layer, making them more vulnerable to the summer combination of heat stress and disease.

This cutlassfish (also known as ribbonfish) was caught by Bird Dog Wheeler in the Miles River. Photo by Karen Starkey

Bottom fishing action for both spot and perch can be found at Hacketts and Thomas points on shell bottom and bars, as well as around Eastern Bay, Poplar Island, and the Severn and Choptank rivers. Small bluefish and spanish mackerel should be moving into the area, with the combination of hot and dry weather and salinities being relatively high. Anglers are hoping for a repeat of last years action on Spanish mackerel, which extended all the way to the upper bay.

Speckled trout action continues from the Choptank River south along the Dorchester County shorelines, and down into the Crisfield areas marsh shorelines and cuts. Grass beds in 3-5 feet of water and stump fields are excellent places to cast swim shads, paddle tails and other plastics on lead head jigs. Gulp plastics and soft plastics in pearl or white with sparkles are popular.

In addition to the presence of speckled trout and puppy drum in the shallows, other oddball species will show up in the middle bay during summers with moderate to high salinities.

Fishing for white perch in the shallower shoreline areas should be steady from now into September. Shoreline structure such as bulkheads, submerged rocks, fallen trees, and riprap are good areas to cast small spinners, spinnerbaits, and jigs. If you are fishing with kids, remember that white perch and spot can also be caught off of docks and piers in 5-10 feet of water with a simple one-hook or two-hook bottom rig baited with pieces of soft crab, bloodworm, or grass shrimp. Synthetic bloodworm-flavored fishbites also work well.

A mix of blue and channel catfish should continue to provide steady action for anglers fishing with cut bait, chicken livers, soft peeler crabs, and other baits in most of the tidal rivers within the region. Channel catfish can be found in every tidal river, and blue catfish are found mostly in the Choptank and Nanticoke rivers.

Cobia fishing is still a good bet at the Middle Grounds, the Target Ship, the Mud Leads, and Point Lookout. The traditional methods are chumming and fishing with cut bait or live eels. In past years, anglers have also caught large cobia with other live baits such as spot and small bluefish. Sight fishing with live eels or large soft plastics on a lead head jig is a trending new method that started in Virginia. This requires using an elevated platform to spot fish, and polarized sunglasses to cut through the glare on the water.

Trolling spoons and hoses (surgical tube lures) will produce both cobia and large red drum around the Target Ship, with bluefish in the mix. Large red drum are also being caught and released by anglers who are light-tackle jigging with soft plastics.

Small bluefish are moving into the region; they are running about 1 pound, which is fun for the kids and a perfect eating size, fresh or smoked. As a reminder, the daily limit is 3 bluefish per day for anglers fishing from private boats or shore, and 5 bluefish per day when fishing from a charter boat. Spanish mackerel should keep moving into the lower bay and are being caught by fast trolling about 7 knots is the target speed with small Drone or Clark spoons.

Spot and white perch should provide steady bottom fishing action in the hard bottom areas of the lower Patuxent River, Honga River, and off Hoopers Island. Pieces of bloodworm on a bottom rig is the best bait for spot.

The shallow-water fishing for speckled trout continues with soft paddletail baits near shallow grass beds along the Eastern Shore marshes. Soft plastics and paddletails work best over deeper grass, shoreline structure, rocks, riprap, wood, and stump fields. The best speckled trout fishing is occurring along the marshes of the Pocomoke and Tangier sounds up to Hoopers Island.

There is some action for bottom fish and small bluefish along the western shore and Point Lookout area and into the lower Potomac River. Also be ready with metal lures in case Spanish mackerel show up on the surface. Striped bass can often be part of the mix, however anglers need to be aware that the main stem of the Potomac River is closed to all striped bass fishing from July 7 to Aug. 20 by order of the Potomac River Fisheries Commission.

Recreational crabbing should improve as we move into early August, with more crabs growing to legal size. The middle and lower bay offers the best opportunity to catch a bushel of crabs per outing. Trotlining at dawn is the best method, and razor clams tend to be the most popular bait in recent seasons. Work the 12-foot to 15-foot edges to find the crabs.

We expect trout streams in western Maryland to continue running low and clear until the current drought conditions subside. As usual, this will require finesse fly-fishing techniques with long casts and light tippets. Small terrestrial fly patterns such as ants, beetles, and hoppers are good choices.

The upper Potomac River will continue running low and warm until weather patterns change. Target fast-moving and deeper waters for smallmouth bass, and cast grubs, small crankbaits, and tubes. There is also some topwater fishing along grass edges and shallows with buzzbaits and poppers at dawn and dusk. Department biologists have been supplementing natural reproduction of smallmouth bass in the freshwater Potomac to enhance the fishery.

Currently, there is a multi-state collaborative effort that is trying to determine the effects of angling for muskellunge during thermal stress. Anglers should use caution when targeting, catching, and handling muskies. As water temperatures in the river rise, the resident muskies will be stressed and will be resting in slightly cooler waters in feeder creeks. In these conditions, muskies cannot survive catch-and-release stress and should not be targeted.

Carp should provide steady summer fun in the upper Potomac, C&O Canal, and various ponds with the traditional baits of scented dough ball baits or corn. Fly casters can catch carp with purple flies that resemble mulberries in areas where the berries fall into the water from overhanging branches.

Farm ponds, reservoirs, rivers, and impoundments offer fun fishing for largemouth bass. Ponds and small lakes can be fished from shore with a variety of weedless soft plastics, including plastic worms, flukes, and lizards in grass, lily pads, or near sunken wood structure.

For anglers targeting northern snakeheads, lures such as buzzbaits and frogs are excellent baits to cast over thick grass. Chatterbaits and paddle tails will also attract snakeheads. The tributaries of the tidal Potomac, Patuxent, Patapsco, and other tidal rivers around the Chesapeake have expanding populations of northern snakeheads. For anglers targeting snakehead in central Maryland, try Little Seneca Lake at Blackhills Regional Park. On the Eastern Shore, the Dorchester County tidal backwaters tributaries to the Nanticoke and Wicomico are consistent hotspots.

Blue catfish are always a good bet for boat anglers using cut bait in the Fort Washington area of the Potomac. Good places for blue catfish in the Patuxent River are along steep channel edges above Jacksons Landing, Jug Bay, and the mouth of Western Branch.

The tidal Potomac River is an excellent place to fish for large blue catfish from shore. Fort Washington allows access to the Potomac and is a safe place to take kids fishing. National Colonial Farm has a pier that is easy to reach and there is more limited shoreline fishing at Marshall Hall. Smallwood State Park is a great place to fish from shore and it has the amenities that make fishing with kids a lot easier. Finally, Mallows Bay is open to shoreline fishing, but the middle of summer finds a good deal of submerged vegetation and algae. The Patuxent River has a growing number of blue catfish but is fairly limited in easy, kid-safe shoreline access. Theres plenty of shoreline owned by state and local governments, but much of the shore in the tidal portion is either cliff or marsh. Still, the Patuxent River park has several piers for fishing Jacksons Landing and Selbys Landing are the farthest north and are good spots to try, although they can get crowded.

Kristen Lenox caught this nice 19-inch flounder near Ocean City Inlet. Photo by Scott Lenox

Flounder are biting in the usual spots around the inlet, but many are under the 16.5- inch size limit. More flounder are starting to mix in with sea bass on the ocean artificial reefs and shipwrecks. A mix of Spanish and king mackerel are being taken while trolling, generally inside the 20-fathom line or further inshore on lumps and other bottom structure. The chunk bite on yellowfin tuna at inshore lumps such as the Hot Dog, Hambone and the Rockpile seems to have slowed down a bit based on recent reports. White marlin, blue marlin, and dolphinfish are being caught at the canyons, such as Washington, Norfolk, and Poormans.

Effective Aug. 17, NOAA Fisheries requires private recreational tilefish vessels in the Mid-Atlantic to get permits and file catch reports. This action is being taken to better characterize and monitor the recreational fisheries for both blueline and golden tilefish. Get your federal private recreational tilefish vessel permit through the NOAA Fisheries website. Call 978-282-8438 for questions about the permitting process. Private recreational tilefish anglers must also fill out and submit an electronic vessel trip report within 24 hours of returning to port for trips where tilefish were targeted or retained.

Anglers fishing near shore or in the surf are reminded to use caution when handling sharks. Do not drag them high up on the sand. Dusky and sandbar sharks look similar, and both sharks are prohibited from harvest. If you cannot identify a shark, let it go in the water. State and federal regulations require shark anglers to use corrodible, non-stainless circle hooks except when fishing with artificial flies and lures, and any shark that is not being kept is to be released in the water. Anglers must have a device capable of quickly cutting either the leader or the hook.

Also, any harvested bluefin tuna, billfish, swordfish, or shark (except spiny dogfish) must be reported via the Catch Card Census before it is moved from a boat or point of landing, to be in compliance with state and federal regulations. Catch cards and tags are available at tackle shops, marinas, and kiosks around Ocean City, and online. Please use the kiosk at the Colonel Jack Taylor Boathouse located in west Ocean City when businesses are closed. Simply fill out the card found in the kiosk and tear off the receipt on the edge of the card, and leave the card in the kiosk. Identification and compliance information is available from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

‘The reaction was brutal’ – Beckham thankful social media was not around after 1998 World Cup red card – Goal

The former England star became one of the most hated men in the country after kicking out at Diego Simeone in the round of 16 loss to Argentina

David Beckham has spoken about the importance of being open about your mental stateafter recalling the vilification he went through after the 1998 World Cup.

England were eliminated at the last-16 stage by Argentina, after Beckham was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone after being fouled by the now-Atletico Madrid manager.

Beckham turned from media darling to one of the most hated men in England. He received death threats, an image of a Beckham effigy hanging outside a pub found infamy, while the Mirrors headline of 10 Heroic Lions, One Stupid Boy was followed by a David Beckham dartboard.

Then at Manchester United, Beckham recovered his reputation to once again become one of the worlds most popular sports stars, butlooking back, he is grateful social media hadnt yet been invented to amplify the experience.

I made a mistake in 98 and the reaction at the time was pretty brutal, Beckham said as part of the Mentally Healthy Football declaration from the Heads Up campaign.

If social media was around when I was going through that time, it would have been a whole different story, but I was lucky, I had a support system within Manchester United, the manager, and obviously family.

Did I feel it was ok at the time to go to someone and say I need help? No, because it was a different era, and I just felt that I had to keep it all in and deal with it myself. Whereas now Im the one preaching to my kids and to other kids that I talk to out there that its really important to talk.

We all know now that its ok not to be ok, and its ok to say that. Its ok to come out and say, I need help.

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is also part of the Heads Up campaign, and he says he has seen welcome signs of change from players in recent years.

Article continues below

He said: In my experience, it is really rare that players come to you and say, Mentally Im not good.

Its changing in the past few years. I hope that this is going to [continue to] change because it is a really important aspect.

It is really important for the relationship you are able to build with the players. Its really important the club is able to build an environment where the players feel comfortable, safe and feel they can explain their thoughts without a problem.

Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea? This New Research Center Is Like an Underwater Space Station – Robb Report

Space is all the rage these days, but it cant hold a glowing anglerfish to the mysteries of the deep blue sea.

Just ask one group of researchers, who will eschew the cool-kid cosmos to study the complexities of the ocean by living on its floor. Swiss designer Yves Bhar has unveiled plans for a new underwater research station that will be situated 60 feet underwater. Named Proteus for the Greek ocean god, the structure will span 4,000 square feetthree or four times as large as previous underwater habitats, which are typically the size of a school bus. The station will allow 12 researchers to live in the ocean full time while studying sea life.

Proteus is the brainchild of the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center, a nonprofit committed to educating people about our oceans and conserving them. Fabien Cousteau, grandson of famed ocean explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, envisioned Proteus as an underwater version of the International Space Station. Like its star-flung cousin, this sea station will house scientists and academics, who will live there and conduct research for over a month. The high-tech center will offer all the tools youd find in a oceanographers lab, so the researchers can study climate changes effect on the sea, extract valuable bio-compounds and discover of new species of marine life. It may even be used to help train astronauts for space travel.

A top-down view of Proteus.Yves Bhar and fuseproject

It certainly looks sufficiently sci-fi. Bhar envisions the underwater station as one large, main habitat, with a series of modular pods attached all around. They can be used as labs, sleeping quarters, bathrooms, life support systems, medical bays and more.

Proteus will also be home to the first underwater video production studio, which will provide continuous livestreaming for educational purposes. There will also be a greenhouseanother first in the marine worldwhere residents can grow fresh fruits and vegetables.

The pods jutting off from the main habitat are modular and have many different functions.Yves Bhar and fuseproject

In many ways, Proteus is our generations Moon landing, said Costeau in a statement. Before it was reality, the Moon landing was just a dream that hardly anyone thought could come true. I want to explore the oceans of Marsbut until we can go there and return safely, the Earths oceans still hold quite a few secrets that are the keys to our future.

The Best Time Travel TV Shows to Watch Right Now – TV Guide

Now Playing100 Best Shows: The Best Streaming Shows

There are two kinds of people: Those who love time travel and those who easily get headaches. If you fall into the former category, you're in luck because the number of TV shows that deal with time travel is astounding, and most of them even follow some of the basic rules of screwing around with the timeline.

Some of the shows on this list are action-packed dramas, while others take a more whimsical approach to history, but all of them are absolutely binge-worthy masterpieces. Whether you want to travel back hundreds of years or just a couple of decades, you'll find the perfect time travel show recommendation in the list below!

Looking for more recommendations of what to watch next?We have a ton of them! And if you're looking for more hand-picked recommendations based on shows you love,we have those too.

Watch it on: HBO Max

This one is a gimme, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mention Doctor Who, and honestly, if you haven't watched this long-running British sci-fi series already, we're not sure you can even call yourself a fan of time travel. Doctor Who follows a centuries-old alien known as the Doctor who has the ability to regenerate and take on different faces (hence the "long-running" bit). The Doctor, currently portrayed by Jodie Whittaker, takes unsuspecting ladies (and a few dudes) on ridiculous trips through time and space. Yep, this one checks the space travel box too! If you do choose to watch Doctor Who though, be warned you will end up in a fight with someone on Tumblr about which Doctor is the best. It's unavoidable.

Watch it on: Netflix

Netflix'sTravelers, initially a co-production with Canada's Showcase, doesn't get even half the recognition it deserves for constructing impossibly complex time travel mythology that is still understandable and engaging for its audience, so we're recognizing it by putting it on this list. In the series, squads of elite soldiers travel to the present from hundreds of years in the future in order to change history and save the human race. If that doesn't sound cool enough, let us just add that they do so by sending their consciousnesses into the bodies of people about to die and assuming their identities. So. Freaking. Cool.

Watch it on: Hulu

Based on the 1995 movie with the same name, 12 Monkeys follows a time traveler who travels from 2043 to 2015 to stop a deadly virus from wiping out most of the planet's population. However, what starts out as a simple mission to the past turns into a mind-boggling journey through some of the biggest historical events of the 20th century and a pretty epic love story. This series really digs into the rules of time travel like causation and paradoxes, so while it may give you one of the aforementioned headaches, it's seriously worth it.

Watch it on: Netflix

In a sea of series that focus on saving the world with time travel, DC's Legends of Tomorrow easily could have gotten lost in the shuffle. Luckily, this CW series quickly established itself as one part nonsense, two parts pure fun, which set it apart from all the rest. If you're looking for a lighter series to help you while the days away, this one is definitely for you. The Legends team does end up saving the world quite a few times, but most of the time they just wind up turning themselves into singing puppets or fighting giant stuffed animals.

Watch it on: Starz, Hulu with Starz add-on, Amazon Prime with Starz add-on

If you're looking for something a little more romantic to binge-watch, Outlander is your ticket. This series follows Claire Beauchamp (Caitriona Balfe), an English WWII nurse who accidentally travels from 1945 back to 1743 while on a trip to Scotland with her husband (Tobias Menzies). Thrown into the past and desperate to get home, Claire finds herself embroiled in a Scottish uprising while slowly but surely falling in love with a ruggedly handsome redhead named Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan).

Watch it on: Hulu

Though Timeless was canceled twice, its devoted fanbase, known as Clockblockers, were so passionate that the NBC series ended up getting a two-hour series finale to wrap things up, so you won't have to worry about a cliffhanger ending. The show follows a history professor (Abigail Spencer), a soldier (Matt Lanter), and an engineer (Malcolm Barrett) who use a government-created time machine to track down a mysterious villain who is trying to rewrite American history. This series pairs the whimsy of DC's Legends of Tomorrow with the high stakes of 12 Monkeys, making it the perfect "middle of the road" option for time travel fans.

Watch it on: Amazon Prime Video

Though it was canceled after just one season, we're still including Terra Nova on this list because DINOSAURS. Set in a dying world where overpopulation has humans on the brink of extinction, scientists have found a way to send people back in time to the Cretaceous Period where the air is breathable, food is plentiful, and the human race can start over. Unfortunately, it's also where dinosaurs are hungry for human flesh, so that's a problem. This show wasn't executed very well (hence its cancellation), but it's worth a watch anyway just to see hot people running away from raptors.

Watch it on: BritBox

When you're ready to take a break from all the action and adventure, Lost in Austen is a great time travel alternative. Rather than traveling through time per se, lead character Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper) travels into the world of her favorite novel, Pride & Prejudice. Caught up in the Georgian Era and the fictional lives of Mr. Darcy (Elliot Cowan) and the Bennet family Amanda unwittingly ends up as a character in the story she loves so dearly, and falling in love with Darcy herself.

Watch it on:Netflix

The critically acclaimed Netflix seriesDarkis not only a complicated time travel drama, it's also a German series, so get ready to turn those subtitles on! The series, which just wrapped up its third and final season, follows multiple generations of four interconnected families living in the German town of Winden (once you've finished the show, our family tree will help explain how everyone is connected), which just so happens to be home to an underground tunnel and wormhole. Time travel and family drama make for an extremely complicated series (we don't recommend just having this one on in the background, folks), but once you get into it, you'll never look back.

Our film says you can be both: a good mother and a good astronaut – The Irish Times

Following on the heels of Contact, Gravity and Hidden Figures, Anna Winocours Proxima is the latest feminine corrective to a traditionally butch genre. Proxima stars Eva Green, who gives a career-best performance as Sarah, an astronaut who has been chosen to be a part of a year-long space mission. Its the culmination of years of training and study but, inevitably, it places a strain on Sarahs relationship with her eight-year-old daughter Stella (Zlie Boulant).

Its a film about the dream of space, says Winocour. The attraction for me is the world of space. Ive been fascinated by space since I was a little girl. But I didnt know anything about it. So the process for me was discovering why I was attracted to that world.

What I did know about was the very complex relationship between a mother and daughter. Its something I know very well because Im a mother myself. I have a little girl who is the same age as the girl in the movie. Space was a way to talk about that. The separation that a rocket goes through as it journeys beyond the atmosphere is called umbilical separation by the Russian space agency. And we call our own planet Mother Earth.

In the character of Sarah, Winocour, who co-wrote the screenplay with Jean-Stphane Bron, has fashioned a new kind of protagonist, one who juggles motherhood and astrophysics, gruelling physical training and everyday sexism. When her American mission leader (Matt Dillon) welcomes her to the team, he suggests that, being a French woman, she must be a great cook; he later dismisses her as a space tourist.

While researching the script, a female trainer at the European Space Agency told the director that the male astronauts talk proudly about their children while the women tend to conceal the fact that they are mothers.

My first idea was to make a film about a superheroine who is also a mother, says Winocour. They are two things that are not represented in cinema together. I think women dont talk about it, because they are made to feel guilty. It is a construction of society that you have to choose between your career and your kids. I wanted to show how hard it is for women, but the worst obstacles are the obstacles that women have inside themselves.

Society makes you think that you have to choose between your career and having children. Our film says that you can be both: a good mother and a good astronaut.

In order to join the Proxima Mission which will take European Space Agency employee Sarah to the International Space Station for a year as it prepares a manned probe for Mars Sarah travels to Star City outside of Moscow for preparation. In order to tackle the role, Eva Green met female astronauts Samantha Cristoforetti and Claudie Haigner, trained extensively and made several trips to Star City and the European Space Agency in Cologne.

Winocours preparations were more extensive and required negotiations with the European Space Agency and the Russian Space Agency so that she might gain access to Star City, the worlds most advanced space training facility, where American, Japanese and European astronauts all train, and the Cosmodrome in Baikonur.

It took two years to write the script and for those two years I was constantly travelling from Cologne where the European Space Agency to Star City which is in the middle of a forest 1 hours from Moscow. And also Baikonur in Kazakhstan, from where they launch rockets. There were two parts to getting authorisation. At the very beginning I went to to see the European Space Agency to ask them if they would be okay to be partners and to collaborate with the film. Because we need their support to be able to shoot in real training facilities.

At first they were a bit amazed by this request because these have been really closed spaces and astronauts are really training there. But I explained to them that there are so many movies about Nasa. And that American movies have monopolised the representation of space travel. And that we needed the European movie about these preparations. So they thought that was something interesting for them. Afterwards it was quite difficult to get authorisation from the Russian Space Agency and the Kazakh Space Agency because theyre all different agencies.

Happily, at Star City Winocours crew were granted the same level of passes as the scientists who worked there, which allowed for access to the prophylactorium, where real-life astronauts train. The film-maker additionally sought advice from the French astronaut Thomas Pesquet, who was preparing for his first flight.

It was like discovering a different world for us, says the writer-director. The exoskeleton you see Eva with at the beginning of the film: thats a real exoskeleton that is a prototype from the European Space Agency for travel to Mars. Because you have to have bodies that will work in all conditions. In that way at the beginning Eva is a bit like a cyborg. She has to become a space person in order to go into space. But the more she becomes a space person, the more she feels attached to the Earth. Thats the paradox.

The screenplay is littered with small details taken from the astronauts Winocour spoke to. The heroines Russian crewmate, Anton (Aleksey Fateev), records nature sounds so that he can take them with him into space.

I get asked about the astronauts all the time, says Winocour. They are interesting. Theyre not really grounded. Theyre already in space. They are not earthbound. They never complain. They think that everything is possible. They dont see that failure is an option. Its a mental set.

In a way, astronauts are a bit like special forces soldiers. They have the same training. Theyre very strong people and when they look at movies and space, they laugh. Because those movies tend to show things that they deal with everyday. Like crashing. And that was one reason I chose Eva. Because she is not of this world. That is why she is in all those Tim Burton movies.

This is not the first time that Winocour has immersed herself in a project. For Disorder, her 2015 thriller concerned a recently discharged soldier Vincent (Matthias Schoenaerts) struggling with PTSD, she interviewed dozens of soldiers returning from war.

I love to discover new worlds, she says. And I love actors that have a strangeness about them. I think I can relate more to them and Im more attracted to them. I also like actors that are really physical like Matthias and Eva because Im obsessed with our relationships with the body.

Winocour was born in Paris. She graduated from La Fmis and directed the short films Kitchen (2005), Magic Paris (2007) and Pina Colada (2009). Her first two features, Augustine (2012) and Disorder (2015), premiered at Cannes, as did highly decorated Mustang (2015) which she co-wrote with director Deniz Gamze Ergven. She attributes her lifelong love of film to half-watched videos, Hitchcocks Psycho, and Wim Wenders Alice in the Cities.

Since my childhood I have watched a lot of Hitchcock movies, she says. But Psycho was really the film of my childhood. I know its a bit weird, but that was the film that obsessed me and my little brother. We would watch it up to three times a day. We had games about the film. We played the characters.

Then I discovered Frances Ford Coppola and Wim Wenders. My mother brought me to Alice in the Cities around that time I was supposed to choose the second language I had to study at school. I didnt want to learn German because of the Jewish origins of my family. But my mother told me: oh, you have to see that film and you will see German can be a beautiful language.

So that was a movie that was really important for me. And also because the little girls name was Alice.

Proxima is on limited release from July 31st

Metabar’s products and services are game-changing – Health Europa

Metabar Technology Oy develops and produces intelligent cleantech solutions like washing and cleaning applications, products and services e.g. for the promotion of public hygiene. Inventor, founder, CTO and Design, Jarmo Lehtonen tells HEQ about the history, goals and future of Metabar.

My educational background is in industrial design and interior architecture; I have a Masters degree in Industrial and Product Design from Aalto University. Essentially I am a dedicated designer for user interfaces, bases and special materials. As an industrial designer I am well versed in practical creativity and especially 3D design and 3D printing methods, but I also take a keen interest in front line technologies: I used to work with physics and exercise training environment, and while performing as founder of in-house industrial design department in world leading heart rate monitoring company Polar Electro, functional and operative electronics and product design work in the mid-1990s I was able to devise a vision and concept with my final thesis (Aalto) of a prototypical tablet and smart watch, around 20 years ahead of the iPad. In my thesis scenario I wore the smart watch every day while it collected essential data from my body; and then when I came home from work, I could use the tablet to generate information on the daily status of my health.

After completing my diploma, I spent five years working in consumer sport and fitness product design and user experience design; following which I spent a total of 15 years working for Nokia as a category design lead designer, business unit design manager and Nokia Design strategy research manager, where I learned how to define, design and create world class business, products and services: that set me on the path to where I am today. In mid-2008 I became an entrepreneur working with my own companies I have operated two consulting companies focusing on business, technology and design development then in 2014 I invented the key Metabar technology, a new intelligent water tap solution and system.

The initial washing system and station I devised in my summer cottage was based on a compressed water system there are existing companies which already make these but then during my cottage renovation I introduced air compression technology to the system to create a new kind of washing process and the first Metabar prototype was created. The most remarkable aspect of this system was its minimal water consumption: it used up to 90% less water than the compressed water system. From that initial concept, the Metabar company was founded late 2016; in 2017 we received first funding (TEKES), produced proof of system and concept, filed patent application to the core technology we now have patent (pending) filed in Finland, the US, China, Japan, Europe and the Middle East. Metabar is three+ years old and is available on the market. We are working with customers and currently strengthening company team; since February 2020 we have been focusing on creating solutions in the fight against COVID-19. With hygiene solutions we use Metabar low PSI technology.

The Metabar washing system (patent focus) adds liquid this can be water, disinfectant or soap to compressed gas and releases it at speed through innovative 3D metal printed nozzle design: this creates customised three-dimensional mist, which can then be used to clean objects. Because the system is intelligent, we are able to scale the power of pressure on demand, meaning it can be suitable for a vast range of cleaning types and processes while reducing the consumption of liquids: the system uses up to 90% less liquid, depending on the use case and the scale of the operation.

In addition to working with companies to provide washing services, during the COVID-19 pandemic the key focus has been hand hygiene as a means of infection control. We offer a number of different process solutions for cleaning hands; and because Metabar technology is intelligent and has a very low rate of liquid consumption, we can create products and service solutions which are functionally long lasting. One of the services we offer is essentially Metabar in a box, so we believe that we can build on that to create a product with no need for any external connection to electricity or water outlets; meaning that our standalone products wont need to be fixed to a wall or in a specific area and they can be placed in strategic locations where they are accessible to everyone and most needed, such as like pathways at airports, cafes, restaurants, and shopping centres.

Metabars primary business aim is technological development. We want to develop further cleaning, washing and hygiene technologies based on the Metabar system and interlinked intelligence software platform; and we have limitless possibilities and opportunities to create new innovative concepts and collaborate with technology and research institutes and universities (Aalto). We also offer the opportunity for companies to create their own brand products and solutions and Metabar can license the technology to them in order to work collaboratively; or if companies approach us with an idea or concept using our technology and we can design and develop the solution for them.

Within industry, Metabars products are game-changing: our products are totally different to existing ones. The washing function is different; the washing process is different; the planning process is different, so we dont need to restrict our system to traditional environments. This means that we can adapt the space, service and product designs with our technology.

We have three territories at the moment; we are working on creating new solutions in focus areas such as handwashing; we are also looking to focus on other areas of personal hygiene we have been asked to create a new shower based around our technology. Two other future key areas for us are the food sector, where we can develop products for cleaning fruits and vegetables; and industry, where there are commonly still strict standards on washing, cleaning and chemical processes.

We will patent both the design and the technology behind each of our products and solutions. We focus on minimalistic, functional design using high quality materials: each material used in our designs is selected for a particular purpose in order to optimise the final product quality. The key phrase is that we optimise everything: we optimise air and liquid consumption; we optimise energy use; we optimise components size and materials; we optimise service time duration; we optimise all costs.

Metabar is aiming to play a significant role in the fight against COVID-19 through our focus on hand hygiene: our service is very well suited to meet this challenge. The main goal here and now is to create a service solution to cover the most critical areas and continue to maintain a high standard of public hygiene even once the pandemic is over it is likely that it may soon become mandatory to install hand hygiene points in public spaces. Its not enough to only have those facilities in public toilets; they must be offered in places where people congregate, like air terminals, train and metro stations, and ports; as well as buses, trains, ships, aeroplanes and other public methods of passenger transport. There must be more hand hygiene points in the future, and Metabar is preparing a solution to address that. In addition, because Metabar is an intelligent system, we are also prepared to track user and passenger conditions and raise the alarm if a user may be infected.

Metabar is also appropriate for domestic use: I am creating and testing the first prototypes at home and I use one hand hygiene concept in my home; I have used it regularly and it works perfectly. Other feasible use cases could include kindergartens, schools and universities; as well as hospitals, libraries, trade shows, office environments and sports arenas, just to mention a few.

One future use case which we are excited about is the potential use of Metabar technology in space travel: spacecraft are necessarily subject to strict requirements regarding the storage, reuse and optimisation of liquids so Metabar may well be able to provide the solution to those limitations.

In a global sense Finland is in a good position, because we have entrenched systems in place to ensure we are able to easily access clean water. There are so many places around the world where there is no water, or the water which is accessible is not clean. Metabar is willing to co-operate with other companies to develop large scale solutions to these issues, based around our technology, solutions and products; we are partnering with an NGO to provide big volume hand hygiene stations to villages and schools in African and Asian regions experiencing water poverty. Because these stations can operate with wireless communication, without electricity or water connection, they are well suited to be deployed in these areas the same NGO solution also works with army armament in war zones and refugee camps, why not in festivals and outdoor concerts where tens or hundreds of thousands of people are crowded together; and where hygiene solutions like this are badly needed.

We are developing and creating new technological concepts; and we are working with other companies to create required solutions. In business terms, we can sell our products, we can sell our concepts and our services with the licensed technology; and we can also rent out fixed term licences for our technology and services. As we grow, we are seeing more and more opportunities to create and expand further through building new partnerships and reaching new markets. Our business is always open for discussions and there are many ways to build on our strategy going forward.

Metabars concept and technology can save huge amounts of water. We want to fight water wastage around the world; and because we use the latest modern technology and processes, all our devices are designed to provide sustainable, resource efficient solutions. When we collaborate with other companies, we expect them to have some kind of sustainability strategy in place, comprising both efficient rates of water and energy consumption and low or reduced emissions: essentially, we support and offer solutions to our client companies to invest and achieve sustainability goals in general.

We know that technology can solve so many things. We can do so many things so much better; we can take less time over things. People are noticing we must change as a society; and thats why Metabar is a game-changer. We will continue to test all our operations and processes carefully to ensure they are superior to traditional systems there is no reason to use the amounts of soap and water that they do. Many of the regulations currently in place in the US, the UK, the EU and Finland are based on outdated technology and information; Metabar wants to work with regulators to enact change and modernise the regulatory landscape, to make regulatory standards more up to date and rational and more responsive to real world needs and lifestyles.

In order to arrest the spread of infection, we must find ways to make it easier and accessible to maintain hand hygiene people do not always want to go out of their way to keep their hands clean, so we must make it logical and easier for them. The need to wash and keep our hands and the public environment cleaner will not go away once the pandemic is over; hygiene is a constant necessary standard. There are many directions which Metabar could go in the future, but at this point we are particularly focused on hand hygiene and the food industry; as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, which remains a significant current issue maybe for a longer period than we hope. Traditional technological solutions are not helping: we need to get rid of the old methods and mindsets and look to the future.

All images and concepts are supplied and used with permission from Metabar vision projects.

The government of Finland declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19 on 16 March, by which point laboratory testing had confirmed 272 cases across the country. The majority of schools and public facilities were closed down; public meetings were restricted to 10 or fewer attendees; and Finns over the age of 70 were encouraged to stay home. By 27 March, with 1025 confirmed cases of COVID-19 throughout Finland, the borders of the populous Uusimaa region which includes Helsinki, the Finnish capital, and houses just under a third of the total population of Finland were closed, with the hope of slowing the spread of the virus.

The prompt response of the government and citizens of Finland in taking steps to address the spread of infection appears to have been largely successful. On 15 April, the border restrictions around Uusimaa were lifted without incident; libraries reopened in early May and were shortly followed by kindergartens and primary schools. Throughout May and June, restrictions were gradually lifted on secondary education; international travel for work purposes; outdoor sports and entertainment events; and restaurants and other public indoor spaces. The government has pledged to continue domestic production of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other healthcare equipment even after the pandemic, in order to avert a recurrence of the global supply issues which affected the worlds health sectors in the early stages of the COVID-19 outbreak.

As of 25 July, the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper reports, Finlands total COVID-19 figures are as follows:

A new exhibition takes a closer look at the variations of this theme, peering into the private studios of several significant local artist-couples Joe Forkan & Crystal Yatchin Lee, Jeffrey Gillette & Lauri Hassold, Robert Repp & Robin Repp, Victoria Reynolds & Jeffrey Vallance, Eric Stoner & Stephanie McManus. OCCCA, 117 N. Sycamore St., Santa Ana; August 1-29 by appointment; virtual opening reception: Sunday, August 2, 7-8:30pm; occca.org.

Sunday, August 2, 4pm; free; participantinc.org.

Ongoing:

Helmut Newton: The Bad and the Beautiful on VOD. About halfway through Gero von Boehms new Helmut Newton documentary The Bad and the Beautiful you realize there have been no interviews with men. Other than the extensive (and quite rare) footage with Newton himself, the voices heard throughout this film are entirely those of the women in his life and work from his wife and partner June Newton, to his publisher Anna Wintour, and his most high-profile models/subjects such as Grace Jones, Isabella Rosselini, Claudia Schiffer, Charlotte Rampling, and Marianne Faithfull.

Newton became famous in the 70s for his racy and hyper-sexualized fashion campaigns and magazine spreads obsessing over the female form a very specific, very naked, fantasy-driven version of the female body as an object, that still inspires both cultish fandom and charges of exploitative misogyny. Throughout the film, footage of Newton at work is woven with modern-day interviews that function as surprisingly warm, witty, and insightful interviews from his models and subjects, testifying to the narrative of their personal empowerment and the works useful artistic and social transgression. A 1979 interview with the late Susan Sontag, who calls him out on the I love women trope oft-repeated by misogynists is the only moment of discord in an otherwise keenly empathetic documentary.

The dynamic of the models and subjects defenses of Newton is fascinating and obviously sincere if rather one-sided, and the huge amount of works and archival materials offers a richly textured and definitely NSFW visual pageant, but perhaps the most intriguing part of the film is the unpacking of Newtons history as a young Jewish Berliner. In a comparison that seems obvious in retrospect, Newton was both repulsed and influenced by the Leni Riefenstahl aesthetic, and had apprenticed with a pioneering female fashion designer before he fled the Nazis as a teenager. He headed to China then to Australia, where he met his wife June (aka the photographer Alice Springs) whom he clearly loved and respected immensely, and who essentially ran his career and studio from that point on until he died in 2004, aged 83, after his car crashed into a wall on Sunset Blvd. outside the couples local home base at the Chateau Marmont. Now playing at Laemmle Theaters VOD; $12; kinomarquee.com.

Law banning triple talaq: A year ago today, we reached a defining moment in empowerment of women – Economic Times

Exactly a year ago today, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, was passed by both Houses of the Parliament. This Act, in substance, declared the triple talaq, ie talaq-e-biddat or any other similar form of talaq, illegal. Any Muslim husband who pronounces such talaq to his wife can suffer imprisonment for a term of three years and also be liable for fine.

The offence under this law is cognisable only if the information given to the police is either by the married Muslim woman to whom the talaq is pronounced or by any person related to her by blood or marriage. This is designed to prevent misuse by outsiders. Under the Act, bail can be granted only after hearing the victim woman and on reasonable grounds.

There is provision for subsistence allowance for the wife and her dependent children as determined by the magistrate, including the right of the wife for the custody of her minor children. Significantly, the offence punishable under the Act has also been made compoundable but only at the insistence of the Muslim woman and with the permission of the magistrate on appropriate terms, which the court may determine.

It is indeed a sad commentary that in spite of more than 20 Islamic countries having regulated triple talaq in one form or the other, it took us more than 70 years since Independence to pass such a law in Parliament, after so much opposition and campaign by vested interests. I had repeatedly argued in Parliament that this legislation is only designed for gender justice, equity and empowerment and has no religious overtones at all.

Should an India be governed by constitutional principles including fundamental rights, which so proudly proclaim gender justice and empowerment, allow a big segment of our women to suffer this rank discrimination, that too when majority of the victims came from economically weaker sections? Prime Minister Narendra Modi was very clear that the government must work to ensure justice to victims of triple talaq, support their cause in the court and also bring out a robust law.

While doing the homework for the Bill, I was distressed to learn about many instances wherein triple talaq, irrevocably annulling the marriage, was pronounced for the flimsiest of reasons which included food not being cooked properly, or the wife waking up late in the morning. An IT professional, who reached out to me, had to suffer the ignominy of triple talaq through WhatsApp from her husband from a Middle Eastern country, because her third child was also a daughter.

Today is also the occasion for me to salute the great courage shown by many Muslim women organisations and victims, who took up this cause and challenged it in court. The Supreme Court ultimately declared triple talaq as unconstitutional in a majority judgment. Two judges declared triple talaq to be manifestly arbitrary and therefore violative of Article 14 of the Constitution.

All India Muslim Personal Law Board vehemently argued before the court that they will themselves educate their community against this form of divorce and the court shouldnt intervene. Regrettably, instead of educating their community effectively they took the lead in opposing the proposed law itself when it was under parliamentary scrutiny.

Our post-Independence history has always witnessed progressive laws designed to curb instances of atrocities against women. Dowry Prohibition Act 1961, or Section 32 of the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act 2005, or Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) relating to cruelty against a woman by her husband or his relatives, are all cognisable and non-bailable offences and they are religion neutral. Further, Section 304B of the IPC made the offence punishable with life imprisonment if death because of harassment of the wife occurs within seven years of marriage. Requisite amendments were also made under the Evidence Act about presumption of abetment to suicide and dowry death.

In 2018, we amended Section 376 of the IPC where deterrent punishments of death in case of rape has been provided if the victim is 12 years or below in age. I need to acknowledge that all these legislations were supported over the years by all the political parties where religion of the offender or victim was irrelevant. Why is it that in case of triple talaq, such progressive evolution of Indias society and polity was found to be wavering? The only inference is that from Shah Bano in 1985 to Shayara Bano in 2017, vote bank politics continued to dominate vested political interests at great cost to Muslim women.

While moving the Bill in the Parliament, I had shared statistics on the continuation of practice of triple talaq even after the judgment of the SC. I am happy to learn that the department of minority affairs has elaborately examined the state wise data, after getting feedback from various Waqf Boards and other sources, and found out a significant decline in number of cases of triple talaq after the enactment of this law, as compared to the number reported earlier. Further, in many cases, respectable compromise has also been achieved. This is an assuring sign of empowerment and redemption. Getting this historic legislation passed by the Parliament was indeed personally very satisfying for me.

Startling New Ponemon Research Uncovers 74% of Consumers Say They Have Little Control Over the Personal Information Collected on Them – PRNewswire

PORTLAND, Ore., July 28, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- As consumers' concerns about their digital privacy continue to grow and who is responsible for guarding it remains unclear, new research conducted by Ponemon Institute, a renowned research center dedicated to privacy, data protection and information security policy, and sponsored by ID Experts reveals a startling lack of empowerment consumers feel when it comes to their data privacy. The complete Privacy and Security in a Digital World: A Study of Consumers in the United States report is available for download at https://bit.ly/3f1W5NM.

The research points to a privacy gap between the consumer data protection individuals want and what industry and regulators provide. While the majority of consumers want their data protected, they're still waiting on or expecting the federal government or industries to provide this protection. For instance, a majority of consumers (60%) believe government regulation should help address the privacy risks facing consumers today, of which 34% say government regulation is needed to protect personal privacy and 26% believe a hybrid option (regulation and self-regulation) should be pursued.

Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of Ponemon Institute, said, "This research revealed much of the tension surrounding digital privacy today. Based on my polling experience, these findings make a compelling case for the important role identity protection products and services play in protecting consumers' privacy. The study shows that many consumers are alarmed by the uptick in privacy scandals and want to protect their information, but don't know how to and feel like they lack the right tools to do so."

Tom Kelly, president and CEO of ID Experts, commented, "What we're seeing is a privacy gap between Americans' desire for a solution due to their growing concern for their digital privacy and the services that the actual protection government and industry leaders offer. Consumers must recognize that there are simple tools and practices they can implement to guard their data privacy, and government leaders and online platforms won't do it for them."

Interestingly, the study found that 64% of consumers say they think it is "creepy" when they receive online ads that are relevant to them, but not based on their online search behavior or publicly available information. This confirms that many consumers experience this phenomenon and are alarmed by it. In addition, ID Experts' research findings reveal that 73% of consumers say advertisers should allow them to "opt-out" of receiving ads on any specific topic at any time.

This research also reveals a lack of empowerment that consumers feel in their ability to protect their privacy. While 74% of consumers say they have no control over the personal information that is collected on them, ID Experts' research reveals they are not taking action to limit the data they provide when using online services. In fact, 54% of consumers say they do not consciously limit what personal data they are providing. This lack of empowerment can have devastating effects on consumers' privacy if it goes unchecked.

Other key findings include:

About the Privacy and Security in a Digital World study

Americas principles are our strength. Its time to live up to them.

Healing and making progress on needed reforms in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officerbegins with listening to one another so we can work together for change.

But we must move beyond the rhetoric to get to the real. For us, that includes the reality that we come at todays challenges from very different places. One of us is the founder ofUrban Specialistsand thefirst gang specialist hired by Texasto negotiate peace among gang members in youth prisons. The other issenior vice president of Stand Together and a former prison guard.

But what we have in common far outweighs our differences.

Look what happened when about 400 peoplecame togetherinDallas lastmonth when we kicked off what were calling the Heal America Tour. The participants brought radically differentexperiencesand viewpoints. We all started from the shared belief thatthe source of Americas strength its principle of liberty and justice for all is also the solution to its problems. Then we talked, and listened, and heard.

Gatherings like this force uncomfortable conversations. And discomfort is part of the point. In no other way can we get to the heart of the matter and address the gap between the ideals and the reality. We do that by working to discoverwhat we fiercely agree on and what we believe in.

Mark Holden

We believe that as with any endeavor, some police officers, prosecutors, judges, and corrections officers honor their oaths of office and some do not.

We agree with the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, and that when injustices hold people back, America is the worse for it. The recent tragedies highlight how, when racism becomes institutionalized, public policies disproportionately harm minority communitieswith or without anintent to discriminateon the part of those enforcing the law.

Eliminating these injustices requires us to fully embrace our countrys foundational ideals of equal justice, inclusion, and empowerment, which have always been central to our progress as a people.

These shared beliefs are critical. Once people findcommon concerns, the exhausted majority who are not on either extreme can work to fix them.

We have seen the power of people connecting to each others personal experiences and how that helped them discover common concerns and figure out how to work together. And we have experienced it ourselves.

And right now weneedadiversity of perspectives individuals willing to be candid with each other and to challenge their own assumptions to find innovative solutions to the problems confronting policing and criminal justice reform. Now it is up to each of us to make a difference in the urgent pursuit of equal justice and unite around the principles that will drive progress toward meaningful reform.

Solving the Racism Problem in Outdoors Takes More Than Social Media – Men’s Journal

This past Fourth of July, pro skier Amie Engerbretson posted a photo of herself skiing in an American flag top and jean shorts. Her caption described why she always loves to ski on the Fourth but how it was hard this year to find reasons and ways to celebrate. She discussed the extreme world we are living in, the situation, our flaws and the things we are getting wrong. The caption ended with: With all that in mind, I do celebrate the 4th of July today. I celebrate with an awareness of necessary change and with hope. I send that love, consciousness and celebration to all of you. The post was liked by over 3,500 people and widely praised in the comment section nearly 70 times.

When the post came across my feed, I knew its intention was genuine and meant to show solidarity, but I also saw how it was problematic. In the comments, a group of people criticized Engerbretson for failing to specifically name the racism that made the Fourth difficult to celebrate. And by then declaring that despite her discomfort shed celebrate anyway, Engerbretson was criticized for bypassing and being tone deaf. One such critique was deleted because Engerbretson felt it was aggressive, presumptive, and felt mean. And that was criticized as well, for tone policing.

In the past, Engerbretson has used her social media platform and position in the outdoor world for climate change and female empowerment, butlike many of usis new to anti-racism activism. Recently, she committed herself to researching and donating to organizations doing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) work in the outdoors, and sharing those organizations with her more than 37,000 followers weekly. Shes reading anti-racism books and articles, following the work of folks like Brooklyn Bell and Rachel Cargle, and listening to podcasts focused on allyship. She amended her contract with Spyder to include mandatory community involvement in diversity initiatives and proposed that all the Spyder athletes do the same. Shes highlighting the work of BIPOC community members in her social feeds. And even with all that, she got this wrong. And she knows it.

I am in my infancy of the work in learning how to be an ally both privately and publicly, she told me over the phone. Its no longer appropriate to just be an athlete. You need to use your platform, your voice to advocate for things. But at the same time, Im not a writer, a researcher, a sociologist, a therapist, a social worker; I am not an expert on any of this. I am terrified to do or say the wrong thing. And I know I am probably going to get it wrong more than I am going to get it right.

Engerbretson messaged one of her critics and had an hour-and-a-half conversation to understand her missteps of glossing over the issues. The criticism was that I wasnt specific enough, she told me. I was speaking about systemic racism, the global pandemic, the lack of political leadership. The feeling behind the post was that I am actually not proud to be an American right now and I dont feel like celebrating because I am appalled at systemic racism and the handling of the pandemic. I am ashamed at our political leadership. Could I have said that very specifically? Yes.

In future posts condemning racism, Engerbretson says shell use more detailed language. I am going to keep trying, and I am probably going to get it wrong more, she said. I learned from this experience. I just have to do better.

Shes right; we all have to do better.

Those of usand by us in this context, I mean white folkswho are trying to move beyond statements of support on social media and to more fully understand our personal biases and blindspots, are discovering a hard truth: Racism and white supremacy within our communities runs deeper than we realized, and the work of anti-racism is more complex than we appreciated.

When outdoor brands, publications, and athletes took to social media in support of Black Lives Matter and condemnation of white supremacy in June, the comment sections did not reflect a unified community (as if wanting to end racism is debatable). Among the praise and support were plenty of racist and bigoted comments. I was appalled and shocked, but I shouldnt have been. Our fundamental problem with racism has more of a spotlight on it right now, but it isnt new.

On July 1, Duane Raleigh of Rock & Ice resigned his position in an open letter to the climbing community entitled, An Apology from the Publisher. Raleigh apologized for a clueless and off-the-mark op-ed, Its Time To Change Offensive Route Names, written by Andrew Bisharat, which completely whiffed on the issue of climbing routes with racist names. Bisharat did not once mention racism or white supremacy, but instead focused on how crude and sexualized route names could make children uncomfortable. Sexism and misogyny also has a storied hateful history in the outdoor community, but Bisharat, Raleigh, and Rock & Ice were criticized for a textbook example of racial bypassing.

Raleigh also came clean on his participation in the historic trend of white supremacy within climbing: I was thinking in part of my past, he wrote, because I gave two routes from that era 40 years ago racist and appalling names. The most egregious used the N word, and I am deeply sorry. Among the many abysmal comments on the article was this: Are we 5? Why care if he named a route with n_____ in the name 40 years ago?

We all should care, and not just care: We must work toward a shift in our entire communitys understanding of these issues. And as Anaheed Saatchi wrote in her story, How Mountain Project Stole From A Woman Of Color & Spent Years Defending Hate Speech In The Climbing Community, climber and web developer Melissa Utomo is way out in front of most of us in this effort, and has been met with willful ignorance, inaction, and the theft of her intellectual property. Saatchi reports that Utomo proposed to both REI and Mountain Project (REI acquired MP in 2015) a flagging feature for racist and discriminatory route names and removal of bigots and racist in the public forums. It was rejected in order to protect the first ascensionists route names, even when those names are insensitive at best and outright hateful at worst. Ultimately, Mountain Project launched the feature in June 2020, neither paying nor crediting Utomo.

In no way am I a social justice expert; Im guilty of having been apathetic, too quiet, and unintentionally racist. Ive used words like tribe and spirit animal out of their intended context. Did I mean to be discriminatory? Absolutely not. Was it still offensive? Yes. And that needs to stop. My privilege as an upper-middle class, straight white male lets me walk around in this world with a blindfold and noise-canceling headphones on. That needs to stop too. And I need to understand how my ignorance has been harmful, and that will be a painful experience.

I grew up just outside of Chicago and attended one of the most diverse public high schools in the nation. Ive always been proud of that; felt that italong with a liberal, progressive familyprovided me with a sense of equality and open-mindedness. But recently an unfortunate memory sprang from the basement of my mind.

I was 14 years old, a freshman, sitting shotgun in the 1990 burgundy Toyota Camry that had become the hand-me-down kid car. My brother was driving us to school. We passed a white kid wearing a First Down puffy jacket. Hmm, I guess he doesnt know, I said. My brother snapped his head around at me, a disgusted look on his face with an intensely furrowed brow, and barked, What the hell does that mean; know what? I knew I had said something wrong, something racist. Know that that jacket is only for Black people, I sheepishly whispered to him. He yelled at me not to be a racist asshole, and then he punched me in the side of my head. And when I screamed in pain and asked why he boxed my ear, he yelled, Because it hurts!

The memory reminds me of something I heard author Kevin Fedarko say about the Grand Canyon and the Trump administrations attack on the environment, Indigenous land, and our national parks. Fedarko said that hope is hurtful, that it doesnt lead to action. He said we should feel despair, we should feel anger, and we should use it as fuel.

If white people in the outdoor community want to be true allies, we have to be OK with being imperfect and uncomfortable and wrong. We are going to stumble, we are going to make mistakes, and we will probably offend people while we are trying to educate ourselves and be more outspoken about the bigotry we see in our community.

If that leads to embarrassment or even shame, thats OK. The most and meaningful personal growth often comes from discomfort. Its like my brothers punch to the headsome of this is supposed to hurt, and that hurt can be the fuel we need to help make real change.

WE employees say they were told to attend 2018 holiday party in Bill Morneau’s riding – CBC.ca

The guests posing for photos at a holiday partyBill Morneau held in his downtown Toronto riding in December 2018 were all smiles, but not everyone was having a good time.

Several former employees of WE Charity have toldCBC News they felt pressured to attend the eventand claimed they were not told by their supervisors that the party would be hosted by the federalfinance minister and MP for Toronto Centre.

"None of us wanted to go,"said a former employee, whom CBC News has agreed to refer to as Robin.

Robin is one of three former WE Charity employees who allege co-founder Marc Kielburger's chief of staff, Jackie Pilon, repeatedly asked them to attend the event on Dec. 13, 2018, even after they told her they'd rather not.

Robin claims Pilon asked them to go after work to "fill the room" and that Pilon described the celebration as though it were a "WE event or a Craig Kielburger event," referring to Kielburger's brother and WE co-founder CraigKielburger.

"[She] kind of kept dancing around any details. It was framed as though this was an event centred around Craig, and Bill Morneau would just happen to be there."

When Robin and nine other colleagues arrived at the party, they were surprised to see anti-pipeline protesters outside the downtown Toronto venue, a former community centre known as The 519 that now houses an event spaceand offices of local organizations.

"This was very much about Bill Morneau, and this was very much for the Liberals," Robin said.

Another former employee who attended the Morneau party says WE paid for staff'sUber rides to the venue and offered to let them come in late the next day.

Morneau's director of communications, Pierre-Olivier Herbert, said Morneau often invites "local community groups to the events he hosts in the riding."

"Bill Morneau also hosts an annual BBQ and an annual holiday party in his riding, which is open to the public. Attendance for these free events is not tracked," Herbert said in a statement.

"The WE organization has not received any invitations to any partisan or political events in Toronto Centre."

Under federal income tax law, registered charities can't use theirresources to support political partiesor candidates, but it's unclear whether the holiday party would qualify as a political function without knowing whether party donations were collected at the event, for example.

In a statement to CBC News, WE called theallegations from the former employeesa "significant mischaracterization of events."

"Based on our records, and to the best of our knowledge, WE Charity and ME to WE social enterprise has never circulated an invitation to staff to attend a political event such as a political rally or political fundraiser," the organization said.

"However, as active members of the local community, WE Charity will participate and/or circulate information to staff about local community events."

CBC agreed not to identify Robin and other former WE employees who participated in this story, because they had all signed non-disclosure agreements with WE that prevent them from speaking out.

However, the former employees say they want Canadians to know more about the international development and youth empowerment charity that attracts rich and powerful supporters such as Morneau and his family, who have donated a total of $100,000.

The Liberals are under fire for possible conflicts of interest involving Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Morneau and WE, the charity organization the federal government chose to administer its student volunteer program, the Canada Student Service Grant.

That agreement was eventually dissolved in the face of public criticismthat the government did not seek other bids, that Trudeau had personal ties to the organization and that several of the prime minister's family members were paid for speaking engagements at WE events.

Neither Trudeau nor Morneau both of whose family members had ties to WE recused themselves from cabinet discussions on awarding the contract, which would have seen WE Charity receive up to $43.5 million to oversee the program.

Testifying before the Commons finance committee on Tuesday, the Kielburger brothers said WE Charity is a non-partisan organization that has worked with federal and provincial governments of all political stripes across Canada.

Trudeau is scheduled to testify before thecommittee on Thursday.

WATCH | Craig Kielburger talks about WE's involvement in the student grant program before the House finance committee:

In July 2017, while travelling in Kenya, Morneau's wife and one of his daughters visitedWE facilities and met with WErepresentatives to learn aboutthe charity's work in the country.

Four months later, on Nov. 9, 2017,Morneau chose WE's Global Learning Centre in Toronto to kick off his public budget consultations, which typically include meetings with a variety of special interest groups across the country.

"The goals of these events is to hear from Canadians about their priorities, ideas and suggestions on what should be included in the next budget," Morneau's spokesperson said of the event.

"The pre-budget consultations hosted by WE were one of many events held with a variety of key stakeholders on issues that matter to Canadians, such as science, innovationand gender equality."

A month after the budget consultation, the Morneau familytravelled with WE to Ecuador.

The finance minister recently reimbursed WE $41,366 for travel expenses from the two trips.

WATCH | Morneauhas facedquestions about possible conflict of interest related to his involvement with WE:

Robin says in retrospect, the employeesshould have said no to Pilon, but in the moment, they felt they had no choice but to attend the riding event.

Robin eventually decided to leave WE Charity, formerly known as Free the Children.

"I didn't have a say in the work we were doing, because the need to please and impress donors takes precedence."

CBCNews contacted 15 former WE employees who, when asked, said it was difficult to challenge the Kielburger brothers and members of their executive team.

One former employee, who also didnot want to be named, said she was afraid she'd be fired or lose out on promotion opportunitiesif she pushed back.

"You have to be ready at a moment's notice and say yes to anything they asked you to do," she said.

In its statement, WE said "it would be an inaccurate representation to use anecdotal information of a very small number of anonymous individuals to reflect WE Charity's workplace culture."

"We regret if any of our 2,000 current and former employees have been made to feel as though they cannot be forthcoming with our leadership team," it said.

The former employees all said they are afraid to speak publicly because they signed non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) as part of their WE employment contracts.

CBC News obtained a copy of one such NDA that forbids staff from disclosing "business and/or personal information about Craig Kielburger, Marc Kielburger" and "any person or company" with which WE "enters a strategic alliance or any other partnering arrangement."

Employment Lawyer Danielle Rawlinson with Monkhouse Law in Toronto reviewed the contract for CBC News. She said it is a standard NDA.

"WE Charity could very well sue these employees if they speak in the media," she said.

James Powell was the global head of branding for both WE Charity and ME to WE, the organization's for-profit arm, before quitting in August 2017. Earlier this month, he posted a video to Instagram demanding WE lawyers release him from his NDAs.

After the video went up, Powell claims, he received messages from hundreds of current and former WE employees who also want to speak out but can't because they, too, are bound by NDAs.

In an interview with CBC News, Powell said the NDAs were "lorded over" WE employees.

"We were constantly reminded ... that we were not allowed to gossip or talk or share anything negatively. And so I'm not comfortable on the record talking about those things. And to me, that's wrong."
