Nordis Technologies Partners with Ricoh on Business Growth – Printing Impressions

RICOH Pro VC40000

Ricoh USAannounced thatNordis Technologies, an innovator and leader in offering technology solutions to solve communications and payment challenges, has chosen Ricoh to help enhance its exciting business growth. Nordis sought a partner that could help address its needs for higher throughput, more efficiencies and shortened turn times, further enhanced by its game-changing, patent-pending Expresso application, used for streamlining and managing communications and payments. Nordis found its answer with theRICOH Pro VC40000,RicohsInfoPrint 5000andRICOH ProcessDirectortechnologies that help drive consistency and efficiency across communication channels and devices with tailored, automated, intelligent workflows.

Over the past 30 years, Nordis Technologies has made a name for itself delivering technology-enabled solutions, providing excellent customer service, and forging relationships that turn into true partnerships built on mutual respect and trust. Its proprietary Expresso platform allows customers to make changes to communications from wherever they are working in real time that automatically update within Nordis system up to the moment production begins. Since its inception, Expresso has brought in many new customers and jobs. All of that growth began to outpace Nordis capacity. The company wanted single-pass, continuous-feed, full color print, so they could increase throughput, add dynamic color and messaging, and streamline operations.

We felt wed reached a tipping point, said Ronnie Selinger, President and CEO, Nordis Technologies. Moving to continuous-feed made sense for our volumes, but we wanted to do it right. We needed to move seamlessly among devices and channels, with centralized control that was compatible with Expresso. We also wanted to make color applications more robust and more cost effective. Fortunately, after some in-depth conversations about our current environment and our goals, the Ricoh team knew exactly how to help.

The addition of Ricoh hardware and software backed by expert service and support made single-pass, vibrant color for transactional documents a reality and strengthened Expressos already-powerful value proposition. Its award-winning workflow solution boosted efficiencies by eliminating the need to transform AFP files when sending to Ricoh platforms. RICOH ProcessDirector also enabled barcode-assisted automation of perforation and streamlined handling of AFP transforms that maintains the architectures signature page-level recovery to help drive reliability. Additionally, Ricohs continuous-feed production devices helped lower storage costs and reduce waste associated with pre-printed shells. With these integrated technology advancements, Nordis and its customers can now more intuitively and flexibly customize any part of the application including color, graphics, or text right up to when the job goes to press.

We often talk about the advantages of leaving pre-printed shells behind for single-pass color, but RICOH ProcessDirectors synergy with Expresso really takes it to the next level, said Mike Herold, Director, Global Marketing, Commercial Printing Business, Ricoh. Internet of Things technology is being used to help trees fight climate change – Euronews

Specialist technology is being trialled in the UK to monitor the role of trees in tackling climate change.

Telecommunications giant Vodafone is teaming up with Defra (the UKs Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) and Forest Research to study how forests can be used to tackle the climate crisis. Sensors - specially designed to withstand harsh climates - will be attached to trees as part of a three-month trial, with data continually sent back to scientists for analysis.

The sensors will use Vodafones Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This is where computing devices are embedded in other objects and able to transfer data to other interrelated pieces of tech, without needing any human interaction.

Researchers will look at key metrics like temperature, humidity, tree growth, and soil moisture on an ongoing basis throughout the study, without having to visit the site. Both Defra and Forest Research plan to use the results to inform policy makers and the wider public about the effects tree growth can have on the environment.

In particular, the scientists hope to uncover more on how the trees' ability to store carbon can be harnessed to mitigate climate change.

The research comes after Defra announced plans to increase tree planting across the UK to 30,000 hectares per year by 2025. This scheme will be supported by a recent 640 million (705m) Nature for Climate Fund, which is set to invest in extensive environmental restoration projects across the country over the next five years.

Trees are a unique natural resource that play a crucial role in combating the biodiversity and climate crises we face, says Malcolm McKee, Chief Technology Officer at Defra.

This exciting partnership uses newly-emerging IoT technologies to improve our understanding of the impacts of environmental change on our nations forests, which will help inform our policy making.

By using IoT technology, the researchers are able to monitor areas of forest which would normally be inaccessible or too costly to reach. McKee explains that this innovative method of transmitting data offers new potentials in forestry research.

Tackling climate change requires radical thinking and our forests will be vital to this, explains Anne Sheehan, Director at Vodafone Business UK. Our technology enables us to connect trees and monitor performance, which is a perfect example of how technology can be used in new ways to help create a more sustainable future.

This is not the only environmental news for Vodafone, as the company recently announced that its entire European network would be powered by 100 per cent renewable energy within the next 12 months.

The project could help revolutionise the future of conservation research, opening up new possibilities for how scientists gather and process data. Matthew Wilkinson, a research scientist at Forest Research, says, the project also will help us gather more data which is critical to targeting efforts to measure the contribution of individual trees to climate change.

If the trial is successful, we hope it will expand to other areas of environmental monitoring and signify a step change in the amount of data we are able to collect and analyse.

Apple AirPods and Beats charging case technology targeted in patent suit – AppleInsider

A lawsuit leveled against Apple on Tuesday claims the company's latest designs, including AirPods and Powerbeats Pro products, infringe on patents covering magnetic earbud cases.

Filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas, the complaint from GUI Global Products, Ltd., operating under trade name Gwee, claims Apple infringes on four patents detailing methods of securing, controlling and charging earbud headphones in a case via magnets.

Gwee's U.S. Patent Nos. 10,589,320, 10,562,077, 10,259,021 and 10,259,020 each cite company cofounders Walter G. Mayfield and Dan Valdez as inventors, and describe systems in which a switching device is magnetically coupled to an electronic device. In certain embodiments, a portable electronic device nests into, and receives control signals from, the switching device and is further protected from the elements by a hinged lid.

Apple's AirPods, AirPods Pro and Powerbeats Pro sport features similar to those described in Gwee's IP. Both product lines incorporate methods of magnetically securing earbuds in a form-fitting case that also acts as a portable power supply. Control signals activate and deactivate the earbuds when the lid of the case is opened and closed, mimicking behavior discussed in Gwee's patents, the suit claims.

Whether Gwee's IP is enforceable or even relates to Apple's technology is unclear. Each patent is primarily concerned with lens cleaning devices that attach to another product a floating sunglass case is described in one example through magnets. These magnets can, in some embodiments, activate a switch that controls certain functions of a host device.

"In addition to their cleaning functionality, the cleaning components of the application have a functionality of being able to active magnetic switches on devices having such switches. This is particularly useful in saving battery life as it does not require the cover of such devices to be closed (the normal mode for activation of such switches)," the '320 patent reads. "In the use of tablet devices having a magnetic switch, the cleaning components are particularly useful as the tablet can be put into hibernation mode with a single touch to the cleaning component as compared to the multiple touches required to do the same thing using the touch pad of the tablet."

Each patent contains multiple aspects that build on the magnetic attachment theme, including contingencies for devices "without a cleaning component" like a vaguely defined "wireless earbuds" product. No patent specifically or comprehensively details a headphone retainment, charging and control system as employed by Apple in its wireless headphone lineup, though such capabilities are alluded to in patent claims.

Gwee seeks damages and court fees in its suit against Apple.

Global Survey Finds Most Prefer Expanding GDP With Health, Education, and Environmental Data Press Releases on CSRwire.com – CSRwire.com

Jul. 29 /CSRwire/ - The 2020 GlobeScan-Ethical Markets Beyond GDP survey repeats questions asked in 2007, 2009, and 2013 polls in Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Kenya, Russia, the UK, and the USA. The general public (n=1,000 in each country) were again asked tochoose between continuing money-based GDP to steer national progress or to add statistics on health, education, and the environment. Overall, an average of 72 percent prefer broadening GDP with such additional data.

These GlobeScan-Ethical Markets surveys were launched at the European Parliament at the EU Commissions Beyond GDP conference in 2007 by Ethical Markets CEO Dr. Hazel Henderson, a US cabinet-level science policy advisor (www.beyond-gdp.eu), and reconfirmed in the later polls. Henderson said Yet financial markets, media, most governments and companies, and their economists persist in the GDP fetishism described by economist Joseph Stiglitz. The 2020 survey shows that people are still ahead of economists, financiers, corporations, governments, and politicians.

Today, many seem toprefer the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Human Development Index (HDI), and the Gross National Happiness Index (GNH) developed in the nation of Bhutan (not included in the survey).Governments, city mayors, and many companies are now scrambling tocatch up, as in theC40 Mayors Agenda for a Green and Just Recovery, July 2020, and the World Economic Forums New Nature Economy, Report II The Future of Nature and Business, June 2020, which forecasts $10.1 trillionof new business opportunities in valuable natural productivity.

These opportunities are alsocited in the cumulative $10.3 trillion of private investments in green sectors worldwide, tracked in Ethical Markets Green Transition Scoreboard reports from 20092020 (www.ethicalmarkets.com). In Brazil for example, dependent on natures productivity, the 2020 survey finds 85 percent of Brazilians favor the broader measures added toGDP on health, education, and environment, along with 81 percent of Germans, 79 percent of Kenyans, 77 percent of French and British publics, 75 percent of Canadians, 73 percent of Russians, 69 percent of Australians, 64 percent in the USA, 59 percent of Chinese, and 58 percent of Indians. The average of those in these countriesstill favoring money-based GDP fell to28 percent.

The global pandemic continues to upendsocieties, cratering GDP-led economic growth, and deepening inequality. Chris Coulter, CEO of GlobeScan, saidThere will clearly be significant societal implications on the back end of the pandemic, leading to further examination around how to best measure and value economies across the world. People want a more holistic approach to how we measure progress in our countries.

This may well alsoaccount for therising of the bottom-up SDG scorecards popularity, cited in both the above-mentioned C40and World Economic Forum reports. TheSDGs were officially adopted by 193 member countries of the UN in 2015 and represent traditional systemic reliance on nature for survival in all countries, as well as the older human values of community cooperation encoded in the Golden Rule.

The COVID Hajj – The Week

There are very few gatherings on the face of the Earth which capture more of the world's imagination than the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Every year, over two million Muslims (out of a staggering 1.7 billion Muslims worldwide) from every country on the planet embark on this once-in-a-lifetime journey to fulfill the fifth foundational pillar of Islam.

Just the aesthetic beauty and power of seeing so many people from every race congregate together in Mecca can be overwhelming. Imagine yourself in a sold-out football stadium with 80,000 people and then multiply that 25 times. In terms of economic impact, the Hajj (and lesser Umrah) pilgrimage generates about $12 billion in revenue for Saudi Arabia.

Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic has reduced the number of people taking part this week to 1,000 total. The spiritual lessons of the Hajj, however, feel more relevant than ever.

The two million Muslims who participate in a typical year are called to reflect on the story of the prophet Abraham's wife Hagar, an African woman and the first person to perform many of the Hajj rituals which pilgrims follow today. The perseverance celebrated in those acts is also personified in the stories of Abraham and their son, Ishmael, both of whom sacrificed their own personal feelings to perform selfless acts of sacrifice and obedience.

Today, the COVID-19 epidemic has forced Muslims (and practicing believers of other faiths) all over the world to reassess how we might fulfill our spiritual commitments and religious obligations in these unprecedented circumstances. Just a few months ago, during our holy month of Ramadan, the global Muslim community was forced to figure out how to navigate fasting for 30 days without praying inside our mosques or visiting our families. Many of us resorted to holding "Zoom iftars" every night to break our fast while chatting with our friends and families.

"It is the dream of every Muslim believer to visit Mecca and do the Hajj," a 61-year-old Lebanese pilgrim told The New York Times. "But the pandemic came with no warning and took away that dream." Many Muslims save up their entire life savings to perform the Hajj pilgrimage once before they die, since it can cost upwards of $10,000 for one person to travel the entire path. As a cultural touchstone, the successful completion of the Hajj conveys such religious status for some people that many Muslims either add the honorary term "Hajji" before their first names on their business cards or add the term "El Hajj" before their names (Malcolm X changed his name to "El Hajj Malik El Shabazz" after his Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca).

"The Hajj is a transformative, emotional, and spiritually moving experience the spiritual pinnacle of a devout Muslim's life," according to Yasir Qadhi, dean of the Islamic Seminary of America.

Yet as we acknowledge the personal sacrifice made by Muslims who may have foregone plans to make the pilgrimage this year, we also remember that every religious tradition teaches the Golden Rule principle of loving thy God and loving thy neighbor.

The importance of that sacrifice has been amply demonstrated. According to The New York Times, a huge gathering of 16,000 people at a Malaysian mosque became the pandemic's largest known vector in Southeast Asia, spreading the coronavirus to half a dozen countries. Another large religious congregation this time in New Delhi, India caused the largest documented spike in COVID-19 cases in India (with nearly one-third of the country's early cases potentially linked to this event).

The Hajj also feels especially poignant for reasons beyond the pandemic. One of the things that struck me when I performed the pilgrimage in 2000, when I was 23 years old, was what Malcolm X wrote about in his famous "Letter from Mecca:"

There were tens of thousands of pilgrims, from all over the world. They were of all colors, from blue-eyed blondes to black-skinned Africans. But we were all participating in the same ritual, displaying a spirit of unity and brotherhood that my experiences in America had led me to believe never could exist between the white and non-white.

At the same time that Black Lives Matter protests have swept the United States, the pandemic has bolstered Islamophobia around the world. In India, some right-wing ethno-nationalists have labeled COVID-19 the #CoronaJihad on social media to fuel conspiracy theories about Muslims trying to infect and poison Hindus. The Guardian reported that "Muslims have now seen their businesses across India boycotted, volunteers distributing rations called 'coronavirus terrorists', and others accused of spitting in food and infecting water supplies with the virus. Posters have appeared barring Muslims from entering certain neighborhoods" across India as well.

In the United Kingdom, counterterrorism police have been "investigating far-right groups accused of trying to use the coronavirus crisis to stoke anti-Muslim sentiment," according to British journalist Mehdi Hasan. There have also been numerous examples of British Muslims being harassed or attacked, including a hijab-wearing Muslim woman in south London who said she was approached by a man who "got in her face" to cough at her and claimed he had the coronavirus while also hurling racial abuse at her.

For people of faith during this new age of coronavirus, it becomes our respective ethical duties to sacrifice our own personal comforts to ensure that our collective crises can be addressed. Although we cannot marvel at a sea of humanity walking in circles around the symbolic house of God, we should take this opportunity of global reflection to devote ourselves to greater unity and social justice.

Bitcoin is money, says DC courtbut of course it is – CoinGeek

A federal court in Washington, D.C., is pushing ahead with charges against an underground Bitcoin exchange, ruling that Bitcoin counts as money under law. The ruling mostly brings the District of Columbia into line with the federal and state governments treatment of digital assets regarding money transmission and laundering. However it serves as a potent reminder that assuming Bitcoin can be used to circumvent financial laws is both wrong and dangerous.

Larry Dean Harmon, of Ohio, allegedly operated the Helix coin-mixing platform from 2014 to 2017, and scrambled over 354,468 BTC for the AlphaBay darknet marketplace and others. He was charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering and being an unlicensed money transmitter. Harmon had attempted to dismiss the unlicensed money transmission charges by arguing that Bitcoin is not money under existing law.

Coin mixers (sometimes known as tumblers) are online services that take users Bitcoins and attempt to scramble their transaction history by mixing them with others, before (usually) returning them to the originator. This, in theory, makes them less traceable to any illegal activity. As weve warned previously, no coin mixing service is operating legally and using one is regarded as extremely risky.

In her ruling, Chief Judge Beryl A. Howell used commonly-accepted principles to define moneythat is, a medium of exchange, a method of payment, and a store of value. Bitcoin is these things, she wrote. The ruling added that D.C. doesnt have a strict definition of the word money on its books, but may define money as it sees fit.

Satoshi says Bitcoin is money and property

Bitcoins own creator, Satoshi Nakamoto (Dr. Craig S. Wright) said himself that Bitcoin can be defined as money. Speaking to CoinGeek, he said:

Bitcoin as a cash system is both property and money. It can be said that there is nothing new under the sun and that certainly is the case with Bitcoin. I created Bitcoin to recover the link to age old tried and tested laws and rules. Bitcoin removes the ability to have an infinitely divisible and distributable digital system and returns it to a state of bailable property. That is, Bitcoin is the first digital asset that can be possessed. Because of this, there will be many more digital assets that are no longer able to be copied. In the future digital piracy will not exist. Right now, people will start to understand that Bitcoin was always money and that all of the anti-money laundering rules have always applied.

Bitcoin, now traded with the ticker symbol BSV, was not designed to be anonymous, or used as a tool to facilitate criminal activity. Despite what some promised in the past (and continue to promise even now), Bitcoin is not anonymous. Coin mixers are illegal and inherently untrustworthy. Many who used mixers or darknet marketplaces, either as vendors or customers, have learned this the hard way.

Unfortunately, they may continue to do soanonymity, under the guise of financial privacy is still a goal for many in the digital asset industry. There are so-called anonymous digital currencies designed exactly for that purpose, and additions made to coins like BTC and BCH that mask users identity and transaction details. Whether they work or will continue to work is questionable, as authorities in many countries have made it a goal to make those networks more transparent. If they cant, they will find ways to restrict their use.

Bitcoin BSV is an open and transparent ledger that protects users privacy, yet remains traceable to investigators should they require it. Remember that if a system is anonymous for the lawful but privacy-conscious, its also anonymous for the powerful, corrupt and criminalthe end result being a worse world for all. Bitcoin is money and property, and its use is subject to any laws covering those things.

New report reveals the truth about how much BTC Satoshi mined – Invezz

Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoins unknown creator, still remains one of the largest mysteries in the crypto industry. After 11 years of trying, nobody still knows the real identity of the individual or a group behind this name.

However, thanks to blockchains transparency and the ability to trace transactions experts believed that they at least know how much BTC Nakamoto has in his wallets.

Now, a new report by Whale Alert revealed that Nakamoto may have mined even more Bitcoin than originally believed. In fact, his wealth at this time may exceed $10 billion.

According to new information, Nakamoto may have mined more than 1.1 million BTC. He was Bitcoins first miner, and likely the only miner for quite some time. When BTC price started growing, others have joined the trend, but Nakamoto himself remained active for quite a long period.

Earlier this week, Whale Alert published an in-depth examination of the so-called Patoshi pattern, which indicates that Nakamoto may have mined 1,125,150 BTC.

Previously, it was believed that his mining efforts may have resulted in only around 600k-700k BTC. If the new estimate is true, then Nakamoto might be sitting on over $10.9 billion, according to current prices.

Whale Alert also says that Satoshi may have been responsible for a number of non-Patoshi pattern blocks. If this is true, he might very well have more than 5% of all BTC in his possession.

The topic of Satoshis wealth was as popular as the mystery surrounding his identity. Even more so, when earlier this year, researchers noted activity in two BTC wallets that hold the coins mined in 2009 and 2010.

Researchers determined that neither of the wallets belonged to Satoshi at the time, but that was before the idea of him being responsible for solving non-Patoshi pattern blocks emerged.

With this new information at hand, it is entirely possible that Satoshi is not only still alive, but also that he might still be active in the crypto industry. More than that, one of the transactions came with a message that Craig Wright, who claims to be the real Satoshi, is a liar and a fraud.

Let’s Unite to Protect the Badger-Two Medicine – Flathead Beacon

Opinion | Guest ColumnSen. Testers Badger-Two Medicine bill needs to be acted on by Congress

By Frank Szollosi and Tom France // Jul 29, 2020

Montana Sen. Jon Tester has now introduced the Badger-Two Medicine Protection Act to safeguard a critical piece of wild country on Montanas Rocky Mountain Front. This is a historic moment in the decades-long effort to protect this unique landscape from oil and gas development and Montanans should come together to support Senators Testers bill.

The Badger-Two Medicine is one of the wildest, most rugged landscapes in America where grizzlies roam the hillsides, elk ramble through the valleys, pure cutthroat trout swim in its streams and mountain goats stand sentinel high in its mountains. In addition to its importance for wildlife, the Badger has enormous cultural significance for the Blackfeet Tribe, whose members have gone to the its mountains for generations to practice religious ceremonies, gather medicine and conduct other cultural practices.

Because of its importance to the Blackfeet, the Badger-Two Medicine was part of the original Blackfeet Reservation but under pressure from gold and copper miners the federal government forced the Tribe to cede this sacred area in 1895 and it ultimately became national forest land. Today, despite its importance to the Blackfeet and its value as wildlife habitat, the Badger-Two Medicine is the only part of the Rocky Mountain Front that still isnt legislatively protected.

Without congressional protection, the Badger-Two Medicine was leased to oil and gas companies and speculators in the 1980s and tribal leaders and conservationists have fought to protect the Badger from development for the last 40 years. Earlier this year the last federal oil and gas leases were finally terminated, opening the way for Congress, led by Sen. Tester, to act.

Under Sen. Testers bill, the Forest Service would manage the Badger as a protected roadless area where only activities that would destroy these qualities and the areas cultural values would be prohibited. While new road building, mining and oil and gas development would be excluded, the Badger would still be public land open for use by every American.

But the bill also recognizes the importance of the Badger-Two Medicine to the Blackfeet people by designating a cultural heritage area and requiring regular consultation between the Blackfeet and Forest Service. The legislation also requires the Forest Service to develop a cooperative agreement with the tribe to share administrative or management activities, including public education regarding the cultural significance of the area, trail maintenance, wildlife habitat improvements, and cultural resource protection.

In addition to the added input from the Blackfeet, Sen. Testers bill will also establish a citizens advisory committee to help the Forest Service create and implement a management plan. The committee would consist of diverse stakeholders that would include both tribal and non-tribal members representing the many interests with a stake in how the Badger-Two Medicine is managed. Ultimately, even with the citizen advisory committee and the greater input from the Blackfeet, the Forest Service will retain final decision-making authority, but their decisions would be better informed, more broadly supported and more just.

Sen. Testers Badger-Two Medicine bill needs to be acted on by Congress. It is a win/win scenario across the board for the Blackfeet, hunters, anglers, backpackers, ranchers and Montanas fish and wildlife resources. Please contact Sen. Steve Daines and Congressman Greg Gianforte and ask them to join Sen. Tester in protecting one of the best places in the Last Best Place that is Montana.

Frank Szollosi is the executive director of the Montana Wildlife Federation and Tom France is the regional executive director for the National Wildlife Federation.

Alliance for Regenerative Medicine Calls for Multi-Stakeholder Pan-European Initiative to Fast-Track Real World Evidence in Support of Patient Access to Advanced Therapies

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM. July 29, 2020

The Alliance for Regenerative Medicine (ARM), the leading international advocacy organisation dedicated to realising the promise of regenerative medicines and advanced therapies, has today called for pan-European action to fast-track the use of Real World Evidence (RWE) for advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs), ensuring patients have access to these transformative therapies.

ARMs newly published position paper provides clear recommendations for the European Commission to include as part of the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy, which is designed to improve and accelerate patients access to transformative therapies that are safe and affordable medicines and to support innovation in the EU pharmaceutical industry. ARMs full response to the EU Pharmaceutical Strategy Roadmap can be found on the European Commission website.

ARM calls on the European Commission to fast-track the use of RWE for ATMPs, by convening a multi-stakeholder forum, including subject matter experts from ARM, manufacturers and patient advocacy groups, to set up a European infrastructure for regular RWE use. ARM believes this collaborative approach will benefit regulators, HTA bodies, payors, manufacturers, healthcare professionals and, most importantly, patients.

This group should be focused on the following priorities:

Investment in pan-European RWE infrastructure for ATMPs will be particularly effective if clinical assessment were to be coordinated at the EU level (joint clinical assessment), while adapting national Health Technology Assessment (HTA), pricing and reimbursement processes to capture and value the long-term benefits of ATMPs. An integrated RWE infrastructure, collecting evidence of ATMP use and effectiveness across Europe, will also facilitate cross-border treatments, which are of vital importance in cases when only a limited number of specialised centers across Europe can administer the treatment.

A significant number of ATMPs are expected to obtain European marketing authorization in the years to come, resulting in an increasingly urgent need to address inefficiencies coming from a fragmented, inconsistent and often unusable RWE ecosystem in Europe. ARM advocates for the creation of pan-European infrastructure and processes to develop standards for the collection, analysis and use of RWE for ATMPs and for this infrastructure to be fully integrated in the future establishment of a European Health Data Space.

Paige Bischoff, SVP Public Affairs at ARM, commented: ARM strongly believe the EU must take a central, co-ordinating role to ensure that RWE use for ATMPs is fast-trackedto properly meet the needs of all stakeholders and enhance access to innovation. RWE is integral tocollecting evidence of ATMP use and effectiveness.Solely relying on traditional clinical trials, withoutbenefit of the proper gathering, management and use of Real World Evidence will likely create delays in guaranteeing patient access to transformative regenerative medicines and advanced therapies -- a delay that patients in need cannot afford. As the voice of the ATMP sector globally, ARM looks forward to being part of an inclusive and solution-driven dialogue with the European Commission and other relevant stakeholders in shaping the path forward for the fast and effective use of RWE for ATMPs.

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted even further the importance and urgency of having a common RWE infrastructure across Europe, in order to ensure critical data is available in times of crisis, when the access to healthcare centres and the conduct of traditional clinical trials are hampered.

US regulations for regenerative medicine advanced therapies – Regulatory Focus

This article examines US regulations and guidance documents for regenerative medicine advanced therapies (RMATs). The author describes the field of regenerative medicine, noting that it is expanding at an accelerated pace, and outlines some of the common terms associated with it. He also addresses the application process for these therapies, accelerated regulatory pathways, market access, and the outlook for RMATs. The author cautions that, as exciting as these therapies are, they require a rigorous and carefully planned approach to ensure a seamless progression to regulatory approval and commercial success.IntroductionRegenerative medicine is a rapidly expanding field, offering the potential to treat serious and life-threatening conditions by replacing, or regenerating, human cells, tissues, or organs that have been damaged by disease, trauma, or congenital defects.1 With more than 200 investigational new drug (IND) applications anticipated by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2020,2 regenerative medicine should yield many new therapies with enormous benefits to patients, especially those with unmet medical needs.Navigating the complex regulatory environment of regenerative medicine requires companies to engage with the FDA early and often throughout the drug development process to identify and overcome potential obstacles to approval. Many of these therapies are developed by scientific institutions and medical research groups with limited inhouse regulatory resources, so it is advisable to seek external regulatory support early in the planning process.Regenerative medicines definedRegenerative medicines, as defined by the FDA, include cell therapies (non- and genetically modified), therapeutic tissue-engineering products, human cell and tissue products, and combination products using these biologic components, which lead to a sustained effect on cells and tissues. In addition, a combination product (biologic device, biologic drug, or biologic device-drug) can be eligible for regenerative medicine advanced therapy (RMAT) designation when the biological product constituent part is a regenerative medicine therapy and provides the greatest contribution to the overall intended therapeutic effects of the combination product (i.e., the primary mode of action of the combination product is conveyed by the biological product constituent part). In January 2020, the FDA released six final guidances on gene therapy manufacturing and clinical development of products and a draft guidance.3The FDAs policy to advance the development of safe and effective cell and gene therapies can be found here.4 This article explains some of the terminology and covers the key US regulations and guidance documents. Discussions of a select number of these documents will be published in separate articles in Regulatory Focus.TerminologyCellular & gene therapy products5Cellular therapy products include cellular immunotherapies, cancer vaccines, and other types of autologous and allogeneic cells, including hematopoietic stem cells and adult and embryonic stem cells, for certain therapeutic indications. Human gene therapy seeks to modify or manipulate the expression of a gene or to alter the biological properties of living cells for therapeutic use. The FDAs Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER) has approved both cellular and gene therapy products.5Gene therapy6Gene therapy is a technique that modifies a persons faulty genes treat or cure disease and is most often applied to cancer, genetic diseases and infectious diseases. Gene therapies can work by several mechanisms:

The following figureshows CBERs organisation for pre and postmarket regulation35

Market access and outlookAs of May 2019, the FDA had granted 34 products FDA regenerative medicine advanced therapy designations.36 In all, 68 of the 100 designation applications were cell therapy products, 20 of the 34 RMAT granted products have orphan product designation, and 11 of the 34 have fast track designation. While the promise of regenerative medicines to cure disease is driving the field forward at an accelerated pace, developing these therapies require a rigorous and carefully planned approach to ensure a seamless progression to regulatory approval and commercial success.AbbreviationsANDA, abbreviated new drug application; CBER, Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research; FDA, Food and Drug Administration; HCT/P, human cell, tissue, and cellular and tissue-based product; IND, investigational new drug; PDUFA, Prescription Drug User Fee Act; rDNA, ribosomal DNA; RMAT, regenerative medicine advanced therapy.ReferencesAll references were accessed 23 July 2020.

Support the Badger-Two Medicine Cultural Heritage Act – The Havre Daily News

Badger-Two Medicine: From Birch Creek and Family Peak in the south, to Lubec Ridge and Elk Calf Mountain in the north, the headwaters of Badger Creek and the Two Medicine River flow down from the sacred summits of Feather Woman and Heart Butte, Scarface and Morningstar, Half Dome and Kiyo Crag, Goat Mountain and the Bruin Peaks. This is classic east-of-divide country with the northern Great Plains of the Blackfeet Nation stretching far to the east.

Immediately south of Glacier National Park, this wild, mostly roadless 130,000-acre segment of Montanas Rocky Mountain Front is a cultural jewel for Blackfeet people who have worshiped here for untold generations. It is also supremely significant for Americas outdoor heritage -- the last piece of public land along a hundred miles of the Backbone of the World without lasting formal protection.

The Blackfeet Tribe has proposed designating this special place as a Cultural Heritage Area, and Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., has introduced the Badger-Two Medicine Protection Act, which would accomplish that goal. Testers bill correctly states that the area boasts abundant wildlife, critical clean water, spectacular natural scenery and outstanding recreational opportunities; and importantly it provides connectivity to Glacier Park and the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex, of which it is an integral part.

Testers bill will keep it like it is by protecting wildlife habitat and ensuring continued public access for traditional recreational uses including hunting, fishing, horse packing and hiking.

In recent years large wildfires burned across some of the country, which means windfallen trees across trails, so the legislation allows chainsaws for trail clearing. The Cultural Heritage Area honors tribal treaty rights and the spiritual connections the Blackfeet have for this sacred land, and it serves the best interests of all who love wild places.

Montanans overwhelmingly supported the 2014 Rocky Mountain Front Heritage Act which protects all national public lands of the Front south of Birch Creek.

This latest proposal completes 40 years of continuous effort so many have worked for to ensure that our descendants can experience the special landscape of the Badger-Two Medicine the way we have. The area is finally free of oil and gas leases, so the next logical step is to formally recognize its significance as a Cultural Heritage Area.

We urge all Montanans to thank Senator Tester for introducing this bill and urge Senator Daines and Congressman Gianforte also to endorse this excellent legislation. Lets seize this opportunity for enduring protection, a win-win for all concerned. Its time to protect the Badger-Two Medicine.

The Montana Conservation Elders are an independent, non-partisan, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors. Its membership represents a variety of conservation perspectives and our members bring experience from a wide range of fields, including journalism, publishing, teaching, law, health care, politics, outfitting and more.

I missed it again. So did the rest of America.

July 1s unofficial International Joke Day came and went without fanfare.

Thats regrettable, because we could all use a good belly laugh right now which gave me an idea.

The other day, after hearing more doom-and-gloom news while driving, I said to the Apple CarPlay app on my trucks stereo, Hey, Siri, tell me a joke.

Siri, Apples voice-activated digital assistant, replied, My cat ate a ball of yarn. She gave birth to mittens.

Thats an awfully corny joke but I laughed so hard, I accidentally steered my truck onto some roadside gravel.

When you laugh like that, its impossible to be angry or to dwell on whatever personal or business challenge may hang over your head

A belly laugh is an antidote to the self-seriousness thats one of the greatest afflictions of modern times. And with a pandemic killing thousands and crippling the economy, plus protests and social unrest, we need belly laughs more than ever. One psychologist suggests practicing laughing with a friendbecause utter seriousness can drive us to despair.

Social media gives everyone a platform to share thoughts, which is good. But some self-serious people get awfully huffy with others who disagree with or challenge their thinking. Theyre so serious and so certain that those who disagree with them are wrong, even evil, that they demonize their detractors.

They dont try to converse, debate or understand differing viewpoints. OK, boomer and OK, Karen memes offer cases in point.

Humor and laughter, wonderfully infectious, keep us from falling into the trap of self-seriousness, promoting goodwill, thoughtfulness and civility.Humor is an elixir, a tonic that is good for mind and spirt, says an executive coach.

Laughters power is incredible and that power lasts.

One of my favorite family stories dates to the early 1950s. Freddy, my dads uncle on his mothers side a real character had a neighbor who was among the first in their area to buy a VW Beetle. Behind the neighbors endless boasting about his Beetles terrific gas mileage was conceit essentially, Im smarter than you, which is why Im getting way better gas mileage than you!

Freddy began sneaking next door at night to fill the VWs gas tank. As he did so, his neighbors boasts grew louder and more tiresome the guy was ready to call the Guinness World Records people, as his VW clearly was getting more miles per gallon than any other Beetle on Earth.

After a month, Freddy continued sneaking next door. But now he siphoned gas from the Beetles tank to the point where the neighbor thought his VW was getting worse gas mileage than any other Beetle on Earth.

Were still laughing at the braggart neighbor who suddenly stopped bragging.

Theres more evidence of the power of laughter. More than 60 years ago, my mother first heard this joke, which she vividly remembers, and still laughs at:

A lady whod been grocery shopping was walking to her car when she tripped and dropped a paper bag, splattering a gallon of water, a dozen eggs, and a pound of bacon all over the pavement. She was so upset that she started crying. A drunk walked up, surveyed the situation, and told her, Dont cry, lady. It wouldnt have lived anyway. Its eyes are too far apart.

We all need to laugh more. It really is the best medicine for our current ails.

Gilead Sciences and Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine Partner to Study Racial Health Inequities Associated with…

-- Funding from Gilead will support creation of data map to systematically address the impact of the disease on Black and minority communities --

FOSTER CITY, Calif. & ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Gilead Sciences, Inc.. (Nasdaq: GILD) and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine are working together to develop a real-time, public-facing and comprehensive health equity data platform to help address the impact of COVID-19 and other diseases on communities of color.

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200728005373/en/

The tool will provide the ability to collect and study the demographic disparities associated with COVID-19, with the goal of using this data to help create actionable, evidence-based policy changes to attain health equity and ensure that disproportionately impacted communities receive resources and support. The database will also examine comorbidities associated with COVID-19, including asthma, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity, sickle cell anemia and depression.

COVID-19 data demonstrate that the disease disproportionately impacts racial and ethnic minority groups, particularly Black Americans.

As we have seen, COVID-19 is magnifying inequities that predate the pandemic, said Daniel E. Dawes, Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. Black Americans, Native Americans, Latinx Americans, Asian and Pacific Islander Americans still contend with neighborhoods that are largely devoid of health-sustaining and health-protective resources, and they still contend with the political determinants or drivers that created, perpetuated and exacerbated these health inequities. We are honored to partner with Gilead to address the root causes of health inequities. Our collective effort intends to create systemic policy change and realize more equitable outcomes for all population groups.

Gilead will initially provide $1 million for the project and also to support the creation of a Black Health Equity Alliance, composed of national thought leaders, community representatives, scholars, researchers and policymakers, which will help coordinate COVID-19 education, training, information exchange and dissemination, and policy analysis.

The data we are compiling with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute will provide the insight we need to help build a better healthcare system for the Black community, said Douglas M. Brooks, Executive Director of Community Engagement at Gilead Sciences. At the core, the work we do at Gilead is being on the frontlines where the need is greatest, as weve done in HIV and hepatitis C in communities across the country. There are many hurdles in the American healthcare system for the Black community to access care and without data like this, we'll be having the same conversation when the next pandemic strikes. We look forward to working with Morehouse School of Medicine to help address these issues.

Data show that in the United States, the Black community is disproportionately impacted by COVID-19:

The data map will go live and be available to the public in the fourth quarter of 2020.
