Littered with Progress – Pleasanton Express

The other day on the internet, I saw an old commercial of a semi truck that had these words painted on the side: JONNY KAT, KITTY LITTER. For some reason that had a profound affect on me. Imagine a semi full of kitty litter! Forty thousand pounds of scented, colored and packaged cat box contents!

That has to say something about our affluent society, about the shape of our civilization. Some of our past inventions are quite practical and ingenious. The self-sealing, puncture proof tire, mercury lights, insecticide ear tags, microwave ovens, the Salk vaccine, four-wheel drive, frozen orange juice and boxed beef. Pistachio tree roots are susceptible to certain kinds of root rot. But peach tree roots are more resistant. So the pistachio growers graft pistachio trunks onto peach tree roots. Clever.

Consider how much artificial insemination has done to improve the quality of our livestock production. Genetic engineering is space-age technology.

But sometimes when we strive to achieve we go off the deep end. Take the cell phone. When they first appeared on the scene they were expensive, heavy and required two hands to operate. Now you can get a disposable one with a camera that adds, subtracts, calculates square roots, tells you the time in Singapore, wakes you up, plays you a tune, gives you the weather and news, takes your pulse, calendars all your events and reminds you of them all, and controls all appliances in your house! What Id like to find is a cell phone that gives me more hours in a day!

And speaking of rotting edges affluence, how about aerosol cheese spread? I thought plasticwrapped, individual cheese slices were pretty decadent, but you can also foam it onto your crackers like shaving cream.

Yep, weve surrounded ourselves with creations that have gone a step beyond their original purpose; fender skirts, square headlights and veterinarians with PhDs. Some might even include Pekingese, Chihuahua or Appaloosa in that group, but I know how sensitive animal breeders are so I certainly wouldnt include them. Obviously our adventures into the extreme or entertaining are useful. We learn and perfect by doing.

Well, my digital ballpoint pen is playing Mammas Dont Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys, so I guess its time to brush my teeth and hit the sack. I hope the batteries are still charged in my computerized flosser. http://www.baxterblack.com

Companies That Want To Make Pharmaceutical APIs Will Be Producing Commodities. Heres What They Should Consider – Forbes

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Eastman Kodak will receive a loan to manufacture ... [+] ingredients used in pharmaceuticals. (Photo by Alex Wong/Getty Images)

The news that Eastman Kodak Company had received a U.S. government loan to begin the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) domestically is recognition of the risks associated with the far-flung supply chain for these critical materials. The Europeans have recognized these risks as well. But that doesnt make the economic challenge of doing this successfully any easier. The problem is that most APIs are commodities.

I spent seven and a half years at Kodak beginning in 1997 running their consumer digital operation, and during that time I got to know the manufacturing people in film and chemicals. The synthetic chemicals team, or Syn Chem as it was known, was an extremely capable crew. They knew what it meant to take a chemical synthesis from the laboratory to an industrial scale, and they practiced their trade on extremely complex materials photochemicals, dyes, couplers complicated molecules that are difficult to make. They knew what solvents (the liquids that you ran the reactions in) you used were important, because when youre done you had to get rid of all the waste products. You couldnt just dump the waste in the local river. You also liked to optimize reaction times (known as reaction kinetics), the amount of energy consumed, the use of dangerous intermediates, all things that were of lesser concern when you were operating at lab scale than when you were doing them at industrial scale. So there is little doubt in my mind that the Kodak team (I hope they havent lost too many of the Syn Chem crew) could make just about anything.

A chemical mixing machine in an Eastman Kodak Corp. manufacturing facility in Rochester, New York. ... [+] Photographer: Daniel Acker/Bloomberg News

But as I said, the first problem with APIs is that most of them are commodities, which means that batches of them are readily substitutable for one another regardless of where they came from. Chemicals are easy to characterize. Modern analytical techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), liquid chromatography (LC), and mass spectrometry (MS), often combined as GC/MS or LC/MS instruments, can be used to analyze a drum or a tank car load of chemical, and tell you exactly what is inside, along with what kinds of impurities and how much of each are mixed in. So if you have the choice among multiple batches that all have a high enough purity level and none of the contaminants that you cant deal with, the only difference is the price.

The second problem with domestic production of APIs is that they are largely tradable. A good is tradable to the extent that it doesnt need to be manufactured close to where it is consumed. Most products are tradable because the cost of shipping them is a relatively small percentage of their value, so if it costs less to make something in China and the shipping cost is less than the difference, it makes economic sense to make it there and ship it. Thats why the U.S. imports so much of everything from China the production costs differentials historically have been much higher than the shipping costs.

The third problem is drug pricing, especially for generics. No consumer likes higher prices, and the President himself have been putting pressure on manufacturers to lower drug prices. But if drugs are made from tradable commodities, that means the companies who formulate the drugs are driven to use the lowest cost sourcing, and that is generally not domestic (usually this means China or India). Once again we face the dilemma we want to make it in the U.S., but we dont want to pay for the higher costs.

Invest in process innovations. Employing newer manufacturing processes historically has been one of the most effective ways to disrupt incumbent manufacturers by offering lower costs. After World War II, European and Japanese steel manufacturers who had to rebuild their industries from scratch were the first to employ new manufacturing processes like basic oxygen and continuous casting. The new processes were more efficient, and their low-cost exports of steel to the U.S. started the long decline of the American steel industry. Korean and Taiwanese flat-panel display manufacturers were able to employ newer, more efficient equipment than the Japanese producers who started the industry, and now the same Korean and Taiwanese companies are under pressure from Chinese companies who are using even newer equipment.

A coming revolution is continuous flow chemical manufacturing, in which compact, continuous flow reactors promise far more efficient reaction processes. I had the opportunity to visit Snapdragon Chemistry two weeks ago, and it is amazing what they are doing. I had to rush back to the Baker Library at HBS and read up on chemical synthesis route design, which is the term used to describe a strategic development process for APIs. I have about 20 more scientific papers to read on this topic to get a better understanding, then you can ask me more. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has been beating this drum for some time now. Once again DARPA is one of the more visionary agencies we have.

Invest in biomanufacturing. Biomanufacturing uses living systems to produce chemicals and biomaterials. Living things already produce the most complex chemicals imaginable, so the idea is to harness cells by using genetic engineering to make new things. This is already used for many biopharmaceuticals, vaccines, and industrial enzymes, but researchers in the field think much more can be done. DARPAs Living Foundries: 1000 Molecules program is funding a lot of research in this area, so the possibilities are intriguing.

One country we might look to for an example is Denmark, where there is a strong cluster of firms who use fermentation to produce a wide range of products. Novozymes, based inBagsvrd outside of Copenhagen, is the world leader in industrial enzymes. Industrial enzymes have been the source of many advances in household laundry detergents like Tide, and are widely used in industries like textiles. Denmarks cluster of fermentation expertise traces back to the Carlsberg brewing company. The Carlsberg Laboratory, established in 1875, was chartered to develop a scientific basis for malting, brewing, and fermenting operations, and ongoing research there and knowledge spillovers have made the region a world leading cluster.

Where in America might we find people who know how to do this? According to the Brewers Association, the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on many breweries, and it reports that A majority of breweries do not think their business can last three months given current conditions, suggesting thousands of closings. Brewers were the foundation of a lot of pharmaceutical manufacturing in India. As longs as the U.S. government is spending money at such a prodigious rate, maybe we could fund an agency to help brewers move into manufacturing chemicals.

Leverage FDA certification processes. One other thing the U.S. could consider is the FDA certification process for pharmaceutical manufacturing. How far back in the supply chain should it require certification? It probably doesnt need to start all the way back at earth, wind, fire, and water, but by strategically picking where it requires inspection, it could shape behavior along the supply chain. We would call that a non-tariff barrier.

The global pandemic is reshaping supply chains in many industries. The economics on some of the new designs havent been tested yet, but with some strategic thinking and actions, we could end up in a better place.

Global Casinos Market Report 2020-2027 – Migration from Cards to Crypto Currency Gambling Forecast to Drive Future Growth – PRNewswire

DUBLIN, July 29, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Casinos - Global Market Trajectory & Analytics" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

While the pandemic and lockdowns have largely benefitted the gaming industry, the gambling sector has been less lucky faced with a tepid outlook and a mixed bag of opportunities and challenges. With 74.6% of revenues coming from the offline brick and motor sector, the closure of entertainment centers and casinos as part of the lockdowns imposed in 1st Q 2020 impacted revenues and profitability for companies. The global market for casinos is expected to decline by 10.8% in the year 2020. The abrupt halting of economic activity has pushed businesses across all industries into financial distress. Sudden fall in revenues and profits as a result of demand disruptions has resulted in workforce pruning and layoffs. Unemployment rates have hit never-before highs with the US topping the charts with 12.5% unemployed as a % of total labor force. Social outlook against this background remains grim with households expected witness erosion in wealth. Personal financial outlook, community, economy, job security confidence, purchasing and investment confidence are all tumbling as the human and economic cost of the global pandemic rises. While brick and motor casinos stagnate, online casinos are faring better although limited by lower discretionary spending. The increase in spending is coming largely from gaming addicts and from consumer clusters spending more on online retail and entertainment during the pandemic.

Even as casinos begin to reopen as lockdowns are cautiously eased in countries worldwide, they face the challenge of falling consumer confidence and spending and the still prostrate travel and tourism sector. In Las Vegas for instance which is the gambling Mecca of the world, millions of tourists and visitors make up for the large customer base at casinos. Gaming operators from Macau to Las Vegas are all anticipating a rough restart after gaming properties are allowed to reopen. In Macau, a few gaming properties have reopened but could not see desirable outcomes. In gambling destinations such as Parisian Macao, Venetian Macao, Sands Cotai Central, Wynn Palace, City of Dreams, Galaxy Macau, MGM Cotai, Grand Lisboa, MGC Macau, Star World and Wynn Macau, customer turnover still remains low. During pre-COVID-19 times, each of those casinos attracted around 200 thousand visitors every day. This extreme drop in visitor numbers is due to stringent border restrictions being followed since the month of March. Limited options for transportation and quarantine rules make it difficult for players to visit gambling destinations. With the global economy now in recession, recovery will be delayed further. Although online casinos are well suited for safe indulgence in gambling in the midst of a pandemic situation, this sector is still fledging and is plagued with legality issues. Online casinos are illegal in most parts of the United States and in countries where online casinos are legal confusion over legal boundaries of betting and gambling is a chief restraint to growth. Underdevelopment online funds transfer platforms also adds another layer of challenge to growth. In younger markets like the U.S. and Asian countries where digital prize money disbursement platforms are still underdeveloped, the challenge is bigger and more difficult to overcome. In Europe, the region with a well-developed online and offline gambling infrastructure, casino owners are innovating in digital payments by using digital wallet services to transfer funds to customers.

A return to complete normalcy will begin only after barriers to access gaming destinations are completely removed. The market is projected to reach US$159.3 billion by the year 2027, trailing a CAGR of 3.7%. Offline Casinos, one of the segments analyzed in the report, is projected to grow at a 3.4% CAGR to reach US$116.3 million by the end of the analysis period. Few of the factors expected to drive growth in the post pandemic period include migration from cards to crypto currency gambling; continued evolution of online casinos supported by rapid proliferation of mobile devices and growing penetration of smart phones and tablets; development of supplicated gambling apps; growing participation of women in casinos; resurgence in casino tourism; relaxation in gambling regulations and legalization of gambling in several nations given their contribution to national income and development of local tourism.

Apple Smart Glasses and Gambling – Will It Be the Next Big Thing? – BestUSCasinos.org

You may have heard of Google Glass. This high-tech device launched in 2013 with the promise of bringing augmented reality through a pair of frames.

Google was hoping that their glasses would become the next smartphone. However, Google Glass has already flopped in the consumer market and is only sparsely used in the enterprise sector.

Apple isnt letting the past failures of Google stop them, though. They plan to roll out smart glasses within the next few years.

Youve seen what the smartphone has done for gambling. These handy phones enable you to enjoy casino games, poker, and sports betting anywhere.

Can Apple Glass also revolutionize online gambling? Ill discuss this matter by covering more on these glasses along with how they could change the industry.

Apple hasnt made an official announcement that theyre getting into the augmented reality market. However, rumors suggest that theyre currently developing Apple Glass (name not official) for the consumer market.

This device will allegedly be somewhat similar to Google Glass. However, it may not be a standalone piece of hardware like the latter.

Instead, these glasses could link up to your iPhone as an alternative screen. Youll still have your phone handy, but the information will travel to your eyes rather than you having to look down all the time.

Smart glasses will also delve into augmented reality (AR). The latter puts computerized graphics and pictures over the real-world environment.

If youve ever used Google Maps, you may have seen superimposed arrows on the street maps. AR provides these arrows to help you better navigate streets.

Now that you know the basics of these lenses, Im going to dive more into the details on how they work. Bloomberg reports that Apple Glass will feature a holographic display.

This device will give users the ability to see emails, texts, maps, videos, social media posts, and many other things. Depending upon how deep Apple gets into this product, they may even create a separate App Store for it.

The store would allow users to get gambling-related apps specifically for the glasses. This situation is similar to how separate stores also exist for the Apple Watch and Apple TV.

Two of the companys patents suggest that smart glasses will also come with prescription lenses. Those who have eyesight problems could correct their vision and enjoy modern technology at the same time.

As for the augmented reality, again, this device will likely need to connect to a smartphone. Otherwise, it may not have the hardware to show anything other than simple 2D graphics.

The battery life is a mystery at this point. However, Apple should make the battery last for at least three hours if theyre to keep up with the competing Microsoft HoloLens 2.

One area where Google Glass really fell short was with the look of the device. Apple reportedly hopes to remedy this problem by either featuring a Clark Kent-style pair of lenses or a simple plastic version.

This product could even feature a lidar scanner that will search surrounding environments and add 3D images. The lidar scanner will heavily play into the augmented reality aspect.

You may be perfectly fine with gambling through your phone. However, smart glasses could bring more to the table.

First off, they can add graphics to live dealer gaming. If youre used to playing live casino games, you know that theyre very close to traditional brick-and-mortar gambling.

However, these games dont overlay graphics on the table outside of the virtual chips. Smart glasses could add helpful graphics that help with beginners tutorials or just create more exciting gameplay.

For example, a live casino could show chips shooting from the bottom of the screen after you win a big hand. Or, the table could catch on fire if youre on a hot streak.

Of course, these graphics might come off as cheesy to those who just want a regular live gaming experience. The casino would no doubt need to provide an option to turn such features off.

Apple Glass could add the same type of graphics to virtual table games as well. If youre tired of a stiff virtual blackjack setting, for instance, the lenses AR technology could add exciting animations to the equation.

Finally, this device would allow you to gamble without having to hold a smartphone. Youd already be wearing the casino on your face. The only time youd need to use your hands is when pushing buttons on the side of the glasses.

Potential release dates for Apples smart glasses are all over the place. They range anywhere from late 2021 to 2023.

That said, you really wont have a good indication on when these lenses come out until Apple makes an announcement. But you can probably expect them within the next three years.

The smart glasses market figures to be quite competitive. Apple will need to release a product within the near future if they hope to keep up with Microsoft and other competitors.

You might be expecting to pay a massive price for this relatively new technology. After all, even some smartphones cost $700 or more.

In reality, though, Apples products probably wont cost that much. An early price prediction pegs these glasses at $499 when they launch.

This price may go up depending upon any special prescription you may need. Even then, though, youre probably looking at $700 or less.

Microsofts HoloLens 2, by comparison, is much more expensive. This device costs $3,500 at the time of this writing.

The cheaper predicted price of Apple Glass has everything to do with the iPhone connectivity. You wont need any additional hardware, such as an onboard computer, because the iPhone will handle the keypad and other functions.

Earlier, I mentioned how smartphones have revolutionized online gambling. You can now hold a casino, poker room, or sportsbook in your pocket.

I dont expect Apple smart glasses to have the same revolutionary affect. This is especially the case if they rely on the iPhone so much.

However, these lenses might enhance your experience in some ways. The augmented reality could take your virtual or live dealer gaming to another level.

If you just want to play casino games or poker, then you can easily do this through an online casino on a smartphone. But if you want extra enhancements and graphics, then youll find them through the glasses.

Apple Glass wont be your only option when it comes to gambling through lenses. Instead, plenty of other competition already exists or will soon exist.

Microsoft HoloLens 2 is currently the big competition right now. But its huge price tag and additional required hardware already causes some buyers to hesitate.

Google Glass is still alive in the market to some degree thanks to enterprise usage. Magic Leap 1 and Spectacles by Snap are also options.

Facebook is reportedly developing a pair of glasses as well. Amazon is currently beta testing their Echo Frames, which will come with Alexa voice service.

So far, no smart glasses brand has managed to thrill consumers. However, Apple Glass could potentially be the first device that propels this technology to more gamblers homes.

The real money online gambling world has never really gotten a chance to take advantage of AR glasses. After all, Google Glass failed to take off in the consumer market almost immediately.

However, Apple Glass brings more potential to the table. This device offers iPhone connectivity, AR tech, a reasonable price, and a nice look.

Smart glasses dont figure to completely change online gambling, but theyll certainly enhance certain aspects of it, such as live dealer gaming.

Unfortunately, we still need to wait 1-3 years for Apple Glass to be released. But the wait could be well worth it in terms of gambling and beyond.

KSA Will Not Accept COVID-19 Gambling Ads – Inkedin

Kansspelautoriteit (KSA), the Netherlands gambling regulator, hasreleased a market notice claiming that COVID-19 gambling ads would not be accepted.

The KSA said it took 14 direct steps during national lockdown against unlicensed online operators advertising Corona-Free Gambling Messages.

KSA Chairman Ren Jansen said the regulatory agency would apply the heaviest penalties to delinquent operators, marking their unlawful marketing activities as completely objectionablebehaviour.

While the Dutch government prepares to open its initial licencing window on 1 January 2021, the KSA released its notice, screening online gambling incumbents seeking to enter the controlled Netherlands online gambling marketplace from 1 July 2021 according to the Remote Gambling Act laws.

Jansen reiterated the KSAs prior notice to the applicants that the operators past conduct and actions would be a key condition under which the governing body approves the operators.

The final approval of the Remote Gambling Act was transmitted to the European Commission (EU) in July, which would review the law in accordance with European-wide industry practises and fair market competition regulations.

The final act submitted to the EC included last-minute changes drafted by Dutch Legal Security Minister Sander Dekker, who put new restrictions on the use of historical databases and additional executive management obligations in the form of technical requirements related to the ignore of software and customer safety.

Illegal gambling on the rise in urban Austria – Gambling Insider – In-depth Analysis for the Gaming Industry

Austrias financial police, the Finanzpolizei, have reportedly confiscated over 660 gaming machines in 278 inspections carried out since January, raising concerns over illegal gaming activity, particularly in urban areas with more than half of the confiscated machines found in Vienna.

While illegal gambling has been significantly reduced in rural areas, police have noted a significant rise in large urban centres. The Finanzpolizei have issued more than 13 million in fines in Vienna alone, but has also seen a spike in illegal gambling activity in Linz, with recent raids confiscating 38 gaming machines in the region, including 20 from a restaurant that the police inspected seven times in as many weeks.

Austrias Finance Minister Gernot Blmel praised authorities on the reduction in illegal gambling in rural areas: I congratulate the colleagues from the financial police on these remarkable successes. Illegal gambling is now concentrated in the metropolitan areas and thanks to the excellent work of the financial police, it is no longer active across the country.

Blmel also called for the creation of an independent gambling regulator, a move that will see regulatory responsibility taken away from the treasury.

This intervention took place after the Austrian gambling trade association called for an end to Casinos Austrias monopoly following corruption allegations concerning its appointment of Peter Sidlo as shareholder Novomatic's CFO. Novomatic has since sold its business stake to Czech gaming giant Sazka Group.

Spains Betting Fraud Commission Approves an Action Plan – GamblingNews.com

The National Commission to Combat the Manipulation of Sports Competitions and Betting Fraud in Spain has approved a national plan which sets out a series of measures to be implemented until the end of 2021 to effectively combat fraud and eradicate it from sport.

The national commission has been created by the Government in 2019 with the objective to develop action plans, recommendations or diagnoses to detect, prevent and combat illegal actions in the field of sports competitions and fraud in betting.

The body that features representatives from the Directorate General for the Regulation of Gambling (DGOJ), the National Police, the Civil Guard, the Higher Sports Council, as well as from the sports competitions and the betting sector in the country, has come up with an action plan built around the commissions four main pillars, analysis and diagnosis, disclosure and awareness, control and monitoring, and study of current operations and regulations.

The increasing relevance and constant evolution of the manipulation of sports competitions and betting fraud demonstrate the need to have an effective approach in the fight against this practice.

Regarding the area of analysis and diagnosis, the commissions plan focuses on the need to outline the dangers posed by corruption in sports and raise the general level of professional and public awareness. Manipulation of sports competitions and corruption-related fraud is one of the greatest threats to sport, undermining its essential values and pushing away fans and followers who rely on the fairness of the game.

In terms of disclosure and awareness, the fraud-combatting plan aims to improve awareness among all participants in sports, players, athletes, coaches and other staff, about the legal framework related to sports betting fraud, outlining the risks and threats posed.

The national commission aims to fulfill its control and monitoring function by improving the monitoring and follow-up activities that are currently in place, emphasizing the need for information sharing and collaboration between the authorities combatting fraud in sports betting.

With regards to the fourth main pillar of the commission, the study of current regulations and operations, the action plan its members approved seeks to take into account the effectiveness of the legal framework regarding any new developments, to be able to respond to changing approaches from those attempting betting fraud. Given the rate of change regarding technology advancements, the commission noted as key the need for constant reviews and updates of the regulation framework.

In July, the DGOJ reported the first quarter financial results from gambling, where sports betting contributed the most to the overall results, 110.6 million, 8.7% year-on-year growth, and 50.8% of the whole quarterly total. Fixed-odds betting attributed to a 13.1% growth, while live betting generated 61.3 million, 4% up year-on-year.

Gambling on the stock market: are retail investors even playing to win? – The Conversation AU

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic surge in mum and dad retail investors playing stock exchanges across the world.

In Australia, retail investors were net buyers of A$9 billion of Australian stocks between late February and mid-May, according to corporate advisory firm Vesparum Capital. In contrast, the professional institutional investors superannuation funds and the like were net sellers of A$11 billion of stock.

The amateurs are therefore likely responsible for most of the markets rebound since its March 23 low.

An Australian Securities and Investments Commission analysis of retail investor trading shows from February 24 (the day after the market peaked) to April 3, retail investors daily buying and selling of stocks was double that of the months before (A$3.3 billion to A$1.6 billion). More than 20% of that activity was from new or reactivated accounts.

The securities regulator has expressed concern this rush of amateurs into the stock market is a train wreck waiting to happen. Its report notes retail investors are, on average, not proficient at predicting short-term market movements.

While markets generally recover over the long run and tend to grow with economic fundamentals, short-term trading and poor market timing can be a major risk for investors in volatile markets. Therefore, retail investors should be wary of trying to play the market for short-term price movements by day trading.

There are several possible explanations for why people are taking a risk on the stock market.

Some might see this as an opportunity to get into the market at a low point, with a view to long-term gains. Others might be out of work and looking to day trade - buying and selling shares on short time frames as a source of income. Yet others may be taking the opportunity of working from home to watch the market through the day.

But another explanation is also worth considering. This is an alternative to gambling. So while its risky, its arguably no riskier than sports betting, casinos or poker machines.

Read more: Why stocks are soaring even as coronavirus cases surge, at least 20 million remain unemployed and the US sinks into recession

This theory (that this is gambling by another means) explains why the appetite for risk among retail investors has ballooned when the natural response to severe economic uncertainty would be to reduce trading.

The financial risk individuals are happy to tolerate known as financial risk tolerance is mostly determined by personality. A persons risk appetite is unlikely to change substantially over their life, even with changing economic conditions.

Most people, however, are adept at making different risk decisions with money allocated to different accounts. In behavioural finance this is known as mental accounting.

How they think about and use their different accounts isnt necessarily rational. For example, someone might be very prudent with money from their regular budget account while spending frivolously from a discretionary account.

So extreme risk-taking can occur when opportunities arise despite a person generally being risk-averse.

In the first three months of the year, pollster Roy Morgan estimates about half of all Australians gambled in some form.

Its figures indicated 8.4 million adults spent about A$625 million on lottery tickets, 2.4 million spent about A$2.2 billion on poker machines, and 2.1 million spent about A$1 billion on betting horses, sports etc.

Read more: With pokies shut down, coronavirus stress could drive more people to reckless online gambling

In Australia, the closure of pubs, clubs and casinos during periods of lockdown has severely curbed these forms of gambling. Between late March and late April, for example, the Alliance for Gambling Reform estimates gamblers saved more than $1 billion on poker machines. The cessation of many sporting events has also reduced betting opportunities.

Does this imply people see the financial markets as just another form of gambling? If so, is this necessarily a bad thing?

If a significant number of people are seriously looking to day trading as a way to make money in the short term, the securities regulators concerns are valid. There is a good chance most will lose money.

But if these new investors are driven by their interest in gambling, substituting financial markets for poker machines and sports betting, then surely most must be prepared for losses. Very few gamblers are consistent winners from betting on games of chance or sports.

Read more: There's another health crisis looming what happens when the pokies switch back on?

In this context there may not be so much to worry about albeit acknowledging a small percentage will be problem investors, losing more than they can afford.

Compared to the almost certain likelihood of losses on gambling, those rushing into the stock market might just find it more rewarding than casinos, sports betting or pokies.

Mixed views offered on proposal to expand gambling ban – The Guam Daily Post

Tempers flared between Yigo Mayor Rudy Matanane and Vice Speaker Telena Nelson during Wednesday's public hearing on Bill 226-35, whichseeks to plug loopholes in Guam's ban on gambling devices and activities.

Bill 226 would essentially authorize only bingo or lotteries operated by tax-exempt nonprofits. Cockfighting will not be banned in the proposed local law, but federal law has outlawed cockfighting on Guam.

Matanane appeared in his personal capacity and began by saying he did not support the bill.

"I really don't think that gambling is doing enough to hurt our citizens. I really think that we have more important things we should work on as far as the stray dogs and trash here and I keep yelling about that. Let me tell you, in probablytwo years, these dogs are going to be telling us what to do," Matanane said.

He also made note of islandwide illegal trash dumping and noted little is being done about these concerns. Legislative priorities are skewed, he added.

"Gambling might be an issue for some people; the stray dogs are an issue for a lot of people. The trash is an issue for a lot of people," he added later.

Nelson, who authored Bill 226, said stray dogs and trash can be removed from the island, but that won't help individuals and families who are suffering from gambling addiction.

"Things can look pretty on the outside, but if they're suffering inside the home, then there's no point," Nelson said.

Matanane asked if he could respond but Nelson told Sen. Joe San Agustin, overseeing the hearing, that she did not want a response. Sen. Telo Taitague, however, asked Matanane to make his statements.

"I kept my mouth shut when you were putting me down," Matanane said, evidently upset and speaking louder as he and Nelson began talking over each other.

"I'm not putting you down ... I was addressing the issue that you stated it's their choice," Nelson said.

Matanane ultimately apologized but said he believed he is right and people must make their own choices.

"That's all I was saying," he added. Nelson likewise apologized.

Symptom of deeper issues?

Testimony on Bill 226 was largely in opposition. Several who appeared represented the gambling industry.

John Ryan, a game room operator, said many gaming establishment employees, owners and their supporters stood just beyond the hearing room. Faint applause rose on occasionas individuals delivered their testimonies.

Ryan said Bill 226 would have a detrimental impact on businesses, workers, families, the government and individuals.

Jason Cunliffe, who owns Lucky Land Gameroom with his family and father, attorney Randy Cunliffe, opposed Bill 226, offering a similar argument about the potential loss of hundreds of jobs during a pandemic as a result of the measure.

According to theNorth American Foundation for Gambling Addiction Help, about 2.6% of the U.S. population, or nearly 10 million, people have an addiction problem because of gambling.

"If we're gonna say that we're going to outlaw gambling, do we really just believe that all those gamblers are just going to go away and all those addiction problems are just going to be swept under the rug? ... I think we'd be naive if that were the case," Jason Cunliffe said.

"Addiction is a mental health issue and its something we need to address. ...There are issues in the community that need to be addressed. I think were addressing symptoms of the problem and not the real problem," he added.

Jesse Mendiola voiced support for the legislation, saying "nobody knows addiction" like him.

"These game rooms, yes, they generate a lot of funds, but they are a breeding ground, like mosquitoes, for drug and criminal activity," Mendiola said.

Gambling creates and enables addicts, with loved ones ending up as collateral damage, he added.

"Yeah, game rooms provide revenue for Guam, but it also steals a lot of souls," he said.

Expanded gambling ban legislation to be heard today – The Guam Daily Post

Vice Speaker Telena Nelson's Bill 226 which seeks to plug loopholes in Guam's ban on gambling devices and activities will be heard this afternoon.

The Legislature's Committee on General Government Operations, Appropriations and Housing will hold the public hearing at 2 p.m. today in the Guam Congress Building in Hagta.

On July 13, the Department of Revenue and Taxation confirmed it will no longer grant licenses for the operation of electronic gaming machines following Superior Court of Guam Judge Arthur Barcinas' decision that the rules authorizing gambling devices on Guam are invalid.

After the Rev and Tax announcement, some game rooms have reopened following the relaxed pandemic rules.

Certain gambling room operators have contended horse racing machines are not covered by the ban.

Nelson's bill would include the horse racing machines in the gambling ban.

The legislation would also ban carnival games that involve betting money such as the color game, Beto Beto, blackjack and others.

Bingo or lottery operations by tax-exempt nonprofit organizations would still be allowed.

The legislation would forbid the importation of slot machines, video poker machines, video horse or greyhound machines, pachinko, and other similar machines or devices which afford the opportunity of winnings, payouts, or malfunction refunds, the bill states.

Written testimonies may also be submitted to the Office of Sen. Joe S. San Agustin before the hearing via email at senatorjoessanagustin@gmail.com.

Past in Perspective – The Nation

(Talking of the West) These are people whose histories are spongy with the blood of others. Colonialism, apartheid, slavery, ethnic cleansing, germ warfare, chemical weapons - they virtually invented it all.

Japanese internment camps were established during World War II by President Franklin Roosevelt. From 1942 to 1945, it was the policy of the U.S. government that people of Japanese descent would be put in isolated camps. This policy was enacted in reaction to Pearl Harbor and the ensuing war. The Japanese internment camps are now considered one of the most atrocious violations of American civil rights in the 20th century.

On December 7, 1941, just hours after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the FBI rounded-up 1,291 Japanese community and religious leaders, arresting them without evidence and freezing their assets. Military zones were created and Roosevelts executive order commanded the relocation of Americans of Japanese ancestry. Canada soon followed suit, relocating 21,000 of its Japanese residents from its west coast. Mexico enacted its own version, and eventually 2,264 more people of Japanese descent were removed from Peru, Brazil, Chile and Argentina to the United States.

The plan was drafted after a report by the leader of the Western Defense Command containing falsehoods about the Japanese population, and initially included the rounding up of Germans, and Italians. Riots, and shootings occasionally occurred at the camps.

On the Mitchellverse and Other Letters to the Editor – The New York Times

To the Editor:

Daniel Mendelsohns July 12 review of David Mitchells Utopia Avenue, which turns into a consideration of all of Mitchells work (eight monumental books condensed into a few pages), sounds like a bunch of sour grapes to me. I often wonder about the arrogance it must take to pass off ones own opinion and taste as some ultimate cultural guideline.

Case in point: Mendelsohn writes about my favorite book, The Bone Clocks, that the structural intricacies here are exhausting rather than involving, and the flirtations with the fantastical come off as silly rather than provocative. Really? Does my deep engagement with the novels central character, Holly Sykes, make me a dunce or just gullible? Maybe Mitchells creation of Richard Cheeseman, the books smug literary critic, hit too close to home?

On the Book Review podcast, Mendelsohn said that when writers have reached the end of their originality, they can sort of flail, and try to do more extravagant gestures in order to feel that youre still being creative. But Mitchells not flailing; hes still expanding.

Helia Rethmann Nashville

To the Editor:

What a pleasant surprise it was to see in Daniel Mendelsohns review of Utopia Avenue the courage to provide criticism of the old-fashioned sort: an intelligent and incisive breakdown of Mitchells work that pulled no punches. Although my own views on Mitchells recent efforts differ somewhat from Mendelsohns, I was nevertheless delighted to find that there remain some critics who appear to be as tired as I am of the endless parade of puff pieces that plague our esteemed literary reviews. I hope that others (both writers and readers) surprised by the sight of a less than hagiographic piece in 2020 might recall the wisdom of H. L. Mencken who reminded us that all of the benefits he ever got from the critics of his work came from the destructive variety.

Hamish R. McCormack Brooklyn

To the Editor:

Although Daniel Mendelsohns review of David Mitchells latest novel, Utopia Avenue, featured a thoughtful analysis of the Mitchellverse, I was disappointed that you chose to reveal his latest books finale and detail its climax.

Reviewers generally know better than to spoil the ending of an eagerly anticipated work and rightfully tend to skimp on details when describing major plot points. A review of The Empire Strikes Back, for instance, should only hint at an important secret about Lukes parentage, rather than spoiling the big reveal.

I have not read the book yet, so I must reserve judgment as to the quality of Mitchells latest work. I can, however, state that the conclusion of Mendelsohns review missed the mark. If you believe a book does not merit reading, by all means, say so, but please do not ruin it for the rest of us.

Geoffrey L. Wertime New York

To the Editor:

In his review of David Mitchells Utopia Avenue, Daniel Mendelsohn finds it implausible that a factory worker would ever say the words Call me. Or repent at your leisure. I have two responses to this: First of all, repent at your leisure is not exactly Nabokov or Joyce in complexity. Second of all, lets please not assume that factory workers are incapable of reading, or of language acquisition.

The following is a list of jobs held by famous authors before they attained published glory: Margaret Atwood was a coffee shop counter worker; Raymond Carver worked as a janitor and a deliveryman; Herman Melville was a cabin boy; John Steinbeck worked at a warehouse; Richard Wright was a postal clerk; Harper Lee was an Eastern Airlines reservations clerk; and Jack Kerouac was, at various times, a gas station attendant and a construction worker.

They all probably found these jobs grueling, yet useful to an aspiring writer.

Hashtag Activism, book review: A sign of the times – ZDNet

Hashtag Activism: Networks of Race and Gender Justice by Sarah J. Jackson, Moya Bailey, and Brooke Foucault Welles MIT Press 296 pages ISBN: 978-0-262-04337-3 $19.95 / 15.99

Last year, an inveterate internet observer called 2010 "peak cyber utopia". That was the year Western social media users basked smugly in the belief that their technology had liberated numerous Arab countries from oppressive governments. Since then, we've learned that social media was only one of many tools, not a cause, watched Western democracies undermine their own democratic institutions, and come to realise that actually the internet can't do everything.

And yet. It's one of the peculiarities of Twitter (in particular) and other social media that new movements can take shape in full public view while entirely escaping the notice of those whose bubbles don't intersect them. In Hashtag Activism, Sarah J. Jackson, an associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School, feminist scholar and 'misogynoir' coiner Moya Bailey, and Northeastern University associate professor Brooke Foucault Welles, tell the stories of a number of these movements, beginning in 2009.

Theirs is a rare approach these days; these are the first authors in a long time who aren't focusing on platform abuse. Their index has no entries for trolls, abuse, or bots.

SEE:Top 100+ tips for telecommuters and managers (free PDF)(TechRepublic)

On Twitter, hashtags -- literally, the # sign in front of a word -- were the brainchild of user Chris Messina, not a feature built in by the site's creators. Hashtags provide a combination of search term and filter; entering one into Twitter's built-in search engine produces a live feed of everything anyone's posting using that hashtag. People use it to share comments about conferences they're attending, update breaking news, discuss current trends, or, as in the cases these authors discuss, build evidence and a social movement, as they did during Occupy and much more since. Although the authors primarily talk about Twitter, they acknowledge that other social media -- chiefly Facebook -- are equally important.

They begin by observing that social media affords racial minorities, women, transgender people, and "others aligned with justice and feminist causes" new access that was not available via traditional media. They then go into detail in six chapters featuring the following hashtags: #YesAllWomen, #MeToo, #FastTailedGirls, #YouOKSis, #SayHerName, #GirlsLikeUs, #OscarGrant, #TrayvonMartin, #Ferguson, #FalconHeights, #AllMenCan, and #WhiteWhileCriming.

At least some of these ought to be familiar to anyone who follows the news in mainstream media. Others may be unfamiliar, particularly to a British audience. I had not, for example, encountered #FastTailedGirls or #YouOKSis, which were used to build knowledge of black feminism. Nor had I seen #GirlsLikeUs, which the authors use as an example of community building and advocacy, in this case for transgender women.

Finally, #AllMenCan and #WhiteWhileCriming examine the way offers of allyship can turn into appropriation. In their example, what began as white men offering to join in opposing discriminatory policing by providing examples of times when they were let off lightly for infractions for which their non-white counterparts would have been more severely punished, turned into a performance of privilege.

The authors do not suggest that online organising is enough by itself to effect real social change. But, they conclude, online matters. "Peak cyber utopia" may have to wait.

Weathering the Storm: Preparing for the Unexpected in College – Seaver Blog | Pepperdine Seaver College – Pepperdine University Newsroom

If your image of the college experience is based on TV shows, movies, or even social media feeds, you're likely to have the idea that college is some sort of pre-adulthood utopia, the academic counterpart to the land of milk and honey. I know that when I imagined college life, my brain conjured up the cliches of becoming #BFFs with my roommate, having a never-ending social life, attending sporting events covered in face paint, and hanging out with other students on expansive and meticulously kept green lawns.

And while my fantasy was not 100 percent accurate, going to school at Pepperdine has been one of the best decisions of my life. During my time as a Pepperdine student, I have made lifelong friends, spent a year living in Switzerland, gotten incredible work experience, and even carved out some time to lounge on the aforementioned pristine lawns. (Seriouslywhy is it that colleges have such good landscaping?)

However, I wish someone had told me that college is still real life. Yes, you'll be greeted with a range of new opportunities, new social networks, and an ocean view, but that doesn't give you immunity to the ups and downs of life. College is also dealing with relationship struggles, cleaning food out of the kitchen sink, getting a bad grade on a paper you worked hard on, eating junk food, doing your laundry, negotiating boundaries with your family . . . the list goes on and on. The more pragmatic you are about the college experience, the better equipped you will be to weather whatever curveballs life has to throw at you while you're earning your degree.

Here are three ways that you can prepare yourself to thrive as a college student no matter the circumstances:

When you're at your peak emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual health, you're able to juggle responsibilities, friendships, and larger workloads without feeling overwhelmed. But when one of those categories is compromised and your energy is focused on dealing with a crisis, your ability to manage stressors decreases. During my junior year, I was balancing classes, social relationships, Greek life, two jobs, and involvement in multiple clubs. When I had to have emergency appendix surgery, these responsibilities became too much to deal with. I immediately asked my supervisor for time off work and negotiated a release from my organization obligations until I healed, because my top priorities were my health and my grades.

Make a list of your priorities. What is at the top? Is it your GPA? Is it a job that you hope will transition into a career? Or is your biggest focus building healthy relationships? Everyone's priorities are different, but the important thing is to be prepared to make sacrifices for the sake of what matters most to you. Write down your top priorities, and be willing to put other investments on the back burner if something unexpected happens. Be ruthless in the protection of your priorities and graceful when other activities need to be eliminated during times of stress.

Everyone comes to college with differing ability levels, financial resources, and health histories. Regardless of your background and needs, the University has accommodations for whatever your special circumstance might be you just have to reach out and ask. Be honest and challenge yourself to gather the resources that you know will help you succeed. By advocating for yourself whenever possible, you can create a learning environment geared toward success. Pepperdine's Office of Student Accessibility, Student Care Team, Office of Financial Aid, Office of Intercultural Affairs, and Office of the Chaplain are great resources to become familiar with.

Furthermore, never underestimate the goodwill of your professors. During my freshman year, I suffered a concussion two weeks before finals. This presented a pretty significant problemI had to figure out a way to successfully finish out the semester while dealing with nasty head trauma. By communicating with my professors about my situation, I was able to gain extended deadlines, class notes from my peers, and some welcomed understanding. Additionally, the Office of Student Accessibility provided me with resources that ensured my academic standing could be protected while my brain healed.

The best way to struggle is to struggle together. One of the surefire ways to feel supported in an unexpected situation is to lean on others who can offer you emotional, physical, and spiritual encouragement. Whether you join a club of close-knit students, attend a local church, have a mentorship with a faculty member, join a fraternity or sorority, or plug into a study group within your major, recognize the wealth of community that surrounds you. And be intentional about showing up! Some of my best friends and most reliable support networks didn't come from my freshman dorm, but instead from my involvement in Dance In Flight, my job in the Office of Admission, and my international program. No matter where you decide to invest your time, be sure to recognize that the people spending every day by your side are an excellent resource for support and friendship.

No one truly knows what might befall them. But the important thing to remember is that no matter the circumstance, you have a myriad of resources to weather the storm. When I showed up at the start of my first year, I had no idea that I would have emergency appendix surgery, a concussion, accidentally get stranded on the top of the Alps (long story), or have to do my junior year remotely because of the coronavirus. But throughout these crazy circumstances, I was able to persevere and thrive thanks to my incredible Pepperdine support system. So as you get ready to head to college, know what matters the most to you, come prepared to speak up for yourself, and trust that an array of people and resources will have your back when you need help. I promise you'll be able to move through the inevitable ups and downs with grace.
