Amazing Electron Microscope Images Show Antibodies Fighting the Coronavirus

Scientists managed to capture images of an antibody neutralizing the coronavirus, and they say studying its moves could lead to vaccines or treatments.

Scientists armed with an electron microscope managed to catch the first real glimpse of antibodies attacking the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, which causes the pandemic-causing COVID-19.

The antibodies, which are foot-soldier proteins produced by the immune system, came from blood samples of recovered patients. By pitting those antibodies against samples of the virus and watching them fight, the California Institute of Technology researchers behind the work believe they’ve identified some of the coronavirus’ weak points. They say that their work, which was published last month in the journal Cell, could help scientists develop new treatments or more effective vaccines.

“To our knowledge, this is the first time a team has imaged a mixture of antibodies purified from human blood after a viral infection to visualize the targets of those antibodies circulating in the recovered individual,” CalTech biological engineer Christopher Barnes said in a press release.

Case in point: During the project, the team found one type of antibody that was particularly effective at neutralizing the coronavirus and blocking it from binding to and infecting a new cell.

In theory, scientists could try to develop vaccines that produce that kind of antibody, or concoct antibody therapies that target the virus in the same way.

“One thing that’s particularly interesting about Christopher’s structure is that it shows that the antibody, although strongly neutralizing, did not evolve for optimal binding to the SARS-CoV-2 S protein,” Pamela Björkman, head of the CalTech lab, said in the release. “This suggests that these types of antibodies might not be hard to induce in a person’s body by a vaccine. In addition, it suggests that it should be possible to use protein-engineering techniques to improve such antibodies for use as therapeutics.”

Chinese Navy Installs Generators to Power Rail Guns, Energy Weapons

China is installing massive 20-megawatt generators to its warships to power high-energy weapons, including lasers and rail guns.

20 Megawatt Upgrade

China is installing massive, 20 megawatt generators to its warships to power high-energy weapons, including lasers and rail guns, the South China Morning Post reports.

The turbo generators increase power-generating capacity fourfold on the warships, which would technically allow them to rely fully on electric propulsion alone, according to SCMP. That means faster response times, significant fuel savings, and better maneuverability.

The generators will also be used to power rail guns and energy weapons, according to the newspaper. According to state-owned news outlet Global Media, China is currently developing an electromagnetic railgun which could take advantage of the new generator units.

Going Electric

The new warships wouldn’t be the first to fully rely on electric propulsion. The US Navy and the UK’s Royal Navy also have destroyers that are partially and fully powered by electricity.

The energy weapons are also not novel. Last year, the US Navy announced it will outfit a Destroyer class ship with laser system made by military contractor Lockheed Martin.

And the Royal Navy is currently developing a powerful 50 kW laser called Dragonfire Laser Directed Energy Weapon. Last year, it tested out a new energy storage system that will ensure firing such a weapon wouldn’t disrupt operations on the rest of the ship.

Firing Lasers

The news comes after the US Navy claimed that a Chinese warship fired a laser weapon at one of its surveillance aircraft in mid-February.

“Weapons-grade lasers could potentially cause serious harm to aircrew and mariners, as well as ship and aircraft systems,” read the Navy’s statement, according to CNN, at the time.

China Allegedly Hacked the Vatican, Other Catholic Computer Systems

State-backed Chinese hackers allegedly hacked the Vatican to get a leg up on upcoming diplomatic negotiations over Catholocism in China.

Holy Hack

State-backed Chinese hackers allegedly targeted both the Vatican and the Catholic Diocese of Hong Kong in a months-long attack.

The attacks, first spotted by the cybersecurity firm Recorded Future, occurred as the Vatican and Chinese government prepare for a round of diplomatic negotiations, according to The Associated Press. China called the accusation “groundless speculation,” but Recorded Future suggests that state-backed hacker group RedDelta attempted to give China a leg up in the upcoming talks.

Aggressive Negotiations

In September, the Vatican and Chinese government are slated to begin renegotiations of a 2018 diplomatic agreement about bishop appointments within the country, according to AP News. The deal is a key part of the two parties’ relationship.

“The suspected intrusion into the Vatican would offer RedDelta insight into the negotiating position of the Holy See ahead of the deal’s September 2020 renewal,” reads Recorded Futures’ report.

Underground Catholicism

Catholicism has been a problem for the Chinese government: AP News reports that the country’s 12 million Catholics are split in half between a Chinese-backed sect and an underground church that remains loyal to the Pope.

The 2018 deal — and the upcoming renewal — was an attempt to unite the two factions. The original agreement recognized the status of seven state-appointed bishops who hadn’t been approved by the Vatican, smoothing over relations between the two.

Strange, Giant Cloud Reappears on Mars

The European Space Agency's Mars Express, a camera-equipped Mars orbiter, is keeping close tabs on a mysterious,

Volcano Cloud

The European Space Agency’s Mars Express, a camera-equipped Mars orbiter, is keeping close tabs on a mysterious “elongated cloud” appearing over the 20 kilometer tall Arsia Mons volcano near the Red Planet’s equator.

The spacecraft, and other ones like it, have been following the strange cloud’s evolution since 2009. Now, new images revealed this week by the ESA show that the cloud has persisted.

Martian Mystery

Scans suggest that the mystery cloud is not linked to volcanic activity in any way — the last time Arsia Mons was active was about 50 million years ago, according to NASA. Instead, scientists suspect it’s a cloud made up of water ice flowing down the sloping sides of the volcano.

The cloud, as spotted in the latest images taken on July 17 and 19 by Mars Express’s Visual Monitoring Camera (VMC), appears to be up to 1,800 kilometers in length.

Rapid Daily Cycle

And it doesn’t last long, either. Each Martian year, around the time of Mars’ southern solstice — the equivalent of December 21 here on Earth — the cloud grows for a few hours each day and quickly fades away again.

“This elongated cloud forms every Martian year during this season around the southern solstice, and repeats for 80 days or even more, following a rapid daily cycle,” Jorge Hernandez-Bernal, PhD candidate at the University of the Basque Country, and lead author of an ongoing study into the cloud, said in an ESA statement. “However, we don’t know yet if the clouds are always quite this impressive.”

It’s an unusual observation made possible thanks to the VMC’s wide field of view and highly elliptical orbit.

Scientists Revive 100-Million-Year-Old Lifeforms

After being dragged to the surface and fed a little snack, ancient oceanic bacteria from over 100 million years ago sprang back to life.

Wakey Wakey

After scientists gave them a little snack, some 101.5-million-year-old bacteria sprang back to life after an extremely long nap.

Researchers from the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology dug up chunks of clay from 70 meters beneath the ocean floor. They injected it with sugar and ammonia and, to their surprise, Ars Technica reports that colonies of bacteria quickly chowed down on the meal. It’s a bizarre discovery, and one that suggests that organisms can survive more inhospitable environments than scientists thought.

Wake Me Up

Most shocking — even more shocking than ancient bacteria surviving this long — is that the bacteria found in the clay were mostly aerobic.

According to the study, which was published Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications, the bacteria needed oxygen to live. Without it, bacterial growth quickly stopped. But there’s almost no oxygen to be found at the seafloor, especially under 70 meters of clay.

It’s Alive!

It’s technically possible that younger, more modern bacteria could have seeped down into the clay, Ars Technica reports, but the scientists think it was too densely packed to allow that.

“What we found was that life extends all the way from the seafloor to the underlying rocky basement,” University of Rhode Island oceanographer and study co-author Steven D’Hondt said in an accompanying video. “And what [lead author Yuki Morono’s] paper now shows is that those organisms are not only alive in the deepest form of sediment, but they’re capable of growing and dividing.”

We May Be Able to Extract “Movies” of the Universe From Black Holes

Studying the rings of photons swirling around the black hole P?wehi can help scientists understand the history of the universe.

Summer Blockbuster

Ever since the first-ever image of a black hole was published last year, physicists have been scrambling to learn as much about it as they can.

One of their astonishing new claims is that the swirling rings of light trapped in the orbit of the black hole P?wehi can serve as a sort of historical record, New Scientist reports. The rings of photons could be like the rings of a tree — or even, tantalizingly, like frames of a movie that show the history of the universe.

Frame By Frame

The scientists studying P?wehi, who hail from a long list of universities, published work on those swirling rings back in March. In it, they argue that that the sequence of photon rings can tell them how the black hole formed, help them study its properties now, and even serve as a testing ground for theories like Einstein’s general relativity.

“Together, the set of subrings are akin to the frames of a movie, capturing the history of the visible universe as seen from the black hole,” reads the paper.

Missing Prequel

While probing the rings could reveal many secrets about black holes, the researchers say there are limits to its value as a historical record of the universe. Each ring, New Scientist reports, is only six days older than the last, and eventually they pass the black hole’s event horizon and get gobbled up.

“We’re not going to see dinosaurs,” Harvard astronomer Michael Johnson, who worked on the research, told New Scientist.

Fauci Says Coronavirus Can Infect You Through Your Eyeballs

The White House's top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci told ABC News that

The White House’s top infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci told ABC News that “if you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it.”

Wearing face shields was “not universally recommended,” he said, “but if you really want to be complete, you should probably use it if you can.”

“You have mucosa in the nose, mucosa in the mouth, but you also have mucosa in the eye,” Fauci explained. “Theoretically, you should protect all the mucosal surfaces.”

The science on face shields and their effectiveness against the coronavirus is still unclear.

As per the US Centers for Disease Protection website, “it is not known if face shields provide any benefit as source control to protect others from the spray of respiratory particles,” but “some people may choose to use a face shield when sustained close contact with other people is expected.”

“If you maintain physical distancing of at least 6 feet between you and other people when in public places, you will not need a face shield,” reads a John Hopkins Medicine FAQ. “If you must be in close contact with someone who is not wearing a mask, a face shield may provide some additional protection.”

In the interview, Fauci also noted that there’s “no real recommendation” for when somebody should get tested. “I would think that five days is good. I might even go a day or so early because the incubation period of when you get symptoms is about five days.”

In advance of this year’s upcoming flu season, Fauci stressed the importance of wearing masks to “not only protect us against COVID-19, but also help protect us against influenza.”

“Go out there and get your flu shot when the flu vaccine becomes available,” he added.

Red Bank’s BJ Ragland chooses Tulane from more than 30 Division I football offers – Chattanooga Times Free Press

Red Bank High School senior offensive lineman BJ Ragland has undoubtedly experienced waves of emotion regarding his football career over the past 24 hours.

If finding out his Lions would be able to host their season opener against longtime rival Soddy-Daisy on Aug. 21 as planned wasn't big enough, the defense-demolishing, 6-foot-2, 300-pound tackle announced his commitment to Tulane University on Wednesday afernoon.

Ragland chose the Football Bowl Subdivision's Green Wave, who compete in the American Athletic Conference, out of more than 30 scholarship offers from Division I schools. The New Orleans program's outstanding alumni include former NFL star running back Matt Forte, and the current roster includes former Notre Dame High School standout Patrick Johnson, a defensive end who is preparing for his senior season.

"To be able to announce my decision to Tulane is crazy," said Ragland, who has a 6-foot-6 wingspan and is considered extremely athletic for his size. "At first when I was getting recruited, I was leaning more towards smaller schools and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) programs. I didn't think I would get offers as big as I did. To be in this position now is a blessing."

Ragland listed as a preseason TSSAA Class AAA all-state selection in Murphy Fair's preseason publication and ranked as a top-1o offensive lineman in Tennessee by GridironScouting.com said his final decision came down to Tulane and Central Florida, which won the AAC title in 2017 and 2018 and played for the championship last season.

Tulane, entering its fifth season under coach Willie Fritz and coming off back-to-back 7-6 campaigns after four straight losing records, will gain an offensive lineman with quickness, power and the ability to spring huge gains on the ground. Versatility is another asset: Ragland, who helped Red Bank average more than 180 yards each in rushing and passing per game last season, said he can play anywhere on the line.

He received his offer from Tulane on June 22 during a recruiting period made unique by the coronavirus pandemic. With college visits and camps nonexistent this summer, schools had to find new ways to impress prospects.

"I could feel the energy as soon as I joined my first Zoom meeting with Tulane," Ragland said. "The coaches loved me, and it felt like home. They gave me a great feel of what it would be like to be a part of the program, and they showed a lot of love. I talked to Patrick (Johnson), too, and I can't wait to be a part of what they have going in New Orleans, which is a great city."

With Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee announcing Tuesday that high school football season can start without delay, Ragland is excited to try to push the Lions to more achievements. He is hungry to get back the Region 3-3A championship, which Red Bank won three straight seasons (2016-18) before finishing runner-up to Loudon last year.

However, the ultimate objective for third-year coach Chris Brown's team is to compete for a state championship, and the Lions have ample senior talent that includes Cameron Bell and Jadon High on the defensive line, running back and defensive back Lumiere Strickland, wide receiver and defensive back Kel Eddins, plus emerging star Reco Trimble, a junior running back and defensive back.

"We have a lot of guys who are going to turn heads," Ragland said. "We are happy to get a chance to play. I fell in love with the game of football my freshman year thanks to Coach Tim Daniels, who was my psychology teacher who used to be the head coach at Red Bank. Without his support and the love from my mom, I wouldn't be where I am today."

You can explore the ocean in Cyberpunk 2077 but don’t expect a water exploration game – AltChar

CD Projekt Red's Miles Tost recently talked about Cyberpunk 2077 in Cyberpunk 2077 Community Podcast where he shared some interesting new details about the exploration in the game. Tost said that exploration in Cyberpunk 2077 will be a highly rewarding experience since there are surprises and things to see behind every corner.

When asked about the underground and water exploration, Tost gave an interesting answer. He made it clear that Cyberpunk 2077 is not a water exploration game but will have some secrets underwater, which players will get to uncover by swimming and diving. Here is the transcript of the interesting bit:

I will say this, Cyberpunk 2077 is not a water exploration game. We basically have it [water] there because Night City is located on a coast. We have swimming mostly because we want to give you the freedom to explore. So yeah, you can swim and dive.

There's some content [under water] but [water] is not where we focused our content, absolutely not.

The part about the water exploration can be found in the video below at 49:35 mark:

Miles also confirmed that all your cyberware will be waterproof so if you planned to install a ton of gadgets on your character, fear not, you won't get electrocuted when you get in contact with water.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on November 19, 2020.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is the Biggest Game of the Year- Grounded Announces at Xbox Games Showcase – Essentially Sports

Cd Projekt Reds Cyberpunk 2077 is definitely the most anticipated game of the year. It promises to pack a punch but that punch has been delayed too many times. The game is set to release on November 19th, 2020. But since it has been delayed multiple times already, the fans are getting paranoid. The game is so hyped up at this point that it will be a huge disappointment if it fails to live up to the expectations. Still, it is undoubtedly one of the biggest games of 2020, and Obsidian Entertainment accepts that too.

Confused? You wont be if you have seen the trailer for Obsidians upcoming survival Game Grounded at the Xbox Games Showcase. The trailer starts with a VO which says If youre waiting for the biggest game of the year, then wait for Cyberpunk.

Very smooth, Obsidian. Full marks for that line itself. The VO then proceeds to say that If youre ready for the smallest, weve got you covered.

By saying smallest, they quite literally mean smallest. This is because, in Grounded, you play as miniature human children attempting to survive against all kinds of insects in the backyard. Have you seen the movie Honey, I Shrunk the Kids? Yeah, something like that.

The game may not seem that appealing but it definitely caught the attention of the folks over at CDPR with their praise for Cyberpunk. The games official twitter handle read,

It is difficult to argue with the fact that Cyberpunk is indeed the biggest, most anticipated game of the year. A select few journalists and media houses got a 4-hour preview of the game and had extremely positive reviews for it. You can read all about it here.

We also got a peek at the games story and features in the first episode of the Night City Wire event. It is safe to say that the amount of effort that CDPR has put in developing the open world, the characters, and the story, is nothing short of phenomenal.

Sure, theres the paranoia that the game may not live up to expectations. But given CDPRs success with the Witcher 3, we can expect something satisfying. Moreover, we also expect to see something innovative and entirely different from Witcher 3 too because both these games are poles apart in terms of gameplay, setting, and mechanics.

Nevertheless, this little gesture by Obsidian is refreshing to see simply because it shows the game developers have mutual respect for each others work. Lets wait and see if CDPR does something more in response to this sweet gesture.

Space Travel and Taxes: A Cautionary Tale of Shareholder Benefits – Lexology

In the recent decision in Lalibert v Canada, 2020 FCA 97, [Lalibert] the Federal Court of Appeal confirmed that the $41.8-million costs of a shareholder's visit to outer space as a "space tourist" should be taxed as a shareholder benefit, and not as a deductible marketing expense as was claimed by the shareholder and the company, Cirque du Soleil. While the circumstances of that case are unusual and exotic, the case illustrates that the shareholder benefit rules should be considered any time a shareholder receives an economic benefit from the corporation because of their position as a shareholder.

The Income Tax Act (ITA) includes a shareholder benefit regime, which is intended to ensure that a shareholder is subject to tax on any economic benefit received from a corporation, subject to certain specified exclusions for bona fide business transactions, certain reorganizations, rights offerings, dividend payments, and capital reductions. The provisions have a broad scope, with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) stating that a shareholder benefit may arise from "just about any payment, appropriation of property or advantage conferred on a shareholder by the corporation."

The consequence of a shareholder benefit is significant: the value of the benefit is included in the shareholder's income for the year as regular income (taxed at a higher rate than a dividend), but the ITA does not allow a corresponding deduction to the corporationthus resulting in an element of double tax. For non-resident shareholders, the ITA deems the benefit to be a dividend to which the normal non-resident withholding tax rules apply.

When Is a Shareholder Benefit Taxable?

ITA subsection 15(1) includes in a shareholder's income the amount or value of a benefit conferred on the shareholder by a corporation. The key issues are thus determining whether a "benefit" exists, whether such benefit has been "conferred," and how to determine the amount of the benefit.

Benefit

The term "benefit" is not defined in the ITA but is broad and can include any type of payment or advantage to a shareholder that is outside of the ordinary course of business. In the view of the CRA, "benefits" include:

In Lalibert, the Federal Court of Appeal noted that the analysis often focuses on whether or not the transaction in question was made for a business or personal purpose.

Conferral of a Benefit

Notably, the existence of an economic benefit does not necessarily mean that the shareholder has received a taxable benefit. The benefit will attract liability for tax only if it was "conferred" on the shareholder. The word "confer" implies the bestowal of bounty or largesse, to the economic benefit of the conferree and a corresponding economic detriment of the corporation. What is key is that the corporation is impoverished and the shareholder enriched.

The case law has also found that subsection 15(1) does not always require an intent on the part of the corporation to confer a benefit or knowledge on the part of the shareholderthe requirement is whether either party knew or should have known that a benefit was conferred. In Lalibert, the Federal Court of Appeal noted that the inquiry is highly fact specific, and corporate intent will be more relevant in certain circumstances, such as when the benefit is the result of a bookkeeping error or other mistake.

Determining the Amount or Value of a Benefit

The ITA requires that the benefit be quantifiable in monetary terms. The courts have applied different valuation methods depending on the circumstances, focusing on using simple common-sense approaches where possible. One typical approach is to determine what the shareholder would have had to pay for the same benefit in the same circumstances if he or she had not been a shareholder of the company.

Lalibert v Canada

The above principles are illustrated in the Lalibert case. The facts, in brief, are as follows. In 1984, a street performer named Guy Lalibert co-founded Cirque du Soleil. Fast-forward 25 years to 2009 when the astronomical success of Cirque du Soleil landed Lalibert in outer space as Canada's first space tourist. One of the corporations in the Cirque du Soleil group paid $41.8 million for Lalibert's 12-day trip to the International Space Station. At the time, Lalibert was the controlling shareholder of the Cirque du Soleil group of companies.

The Minister of National Revenue assessed Lalibert with a shareholder benefit equal to the full cost of the trip. Lalibert appealed, arguing that he went to space for a stunt-type promotional activity on behalf of Cirque du Soleil and the One Drop charity.

To determine whether Lalibert's corporate-paid trip to space was a taxable benefit, the Tax Court considered the purpose of the trip, the circumstances surrounding the commitment made to take the trip, the nature of the promotional activities, and the corporate accounting and tax treatment of the expense. Justice Boyle provided 27 reasons to support the conclusion that the "motivating, essential and overwhelmingly primary purpose of the travel was personal." In addition, the Tax Court found that Lalibert committed to the trip before seeking approval from anyone in the Cirque du Soleil group, and structured the payment so that the external shareholders did not bear any of the economic costs of the trip.

Since very few taxpayers will find themselves in the similar position of trying to determine whether their trip to outer space is a taxable benefit or not, Justice Boyle drew an analogy with a shareholder taking a personal cross-country trip with the occasional business stop along the way:

I have approached my decision in this case as I would have had it involved an owner-manager of a business who decided that he personally wanted to go on a cross-country trip, and then decided that, he would stop in to visit business clients and suppliers and potential clients and potential suppliers along the way. One would expect his incremental direct costs associated with his business promotion activities and sidetrips should be deductible, but that little, if any, of the trip itself would be. If he could have his company pay for his whole trip, even if it did not deduct the cost for tax purposes, it would allow him to pay for his trip in pre-tax dollars. The shareholder benefit provisions exist for just such reasons, and going offside can often result in double taxation once corrected.

Simply put, there is a difference between a business trip which involves or includes personal enjoyment aspects, and a personal trip with business aspects, even significant ones, tacked on.

As the Lalibert case illustrates, a personal trip may incorporate bona fide business activities, and it is appropriate in those circumstances to identify and deduct the incremental, direct costs associated with those business activities. With respect to Lalibert's trip, Justice Boyle allocated 10 percent of the cost of the space trip to business activities and the remaining 90 percent as a taxable shareholder benefit. The Federal Court of Appeal agreed with the Tax Court, confirming Lalibert's $37.6-million shareholder benefit and resulting income inclusion.

Down-to-Earth Examples

Shareholders should remain aware of the potential income tax implications if they use corporate assets for personal use or if a benefit is provided in some other way. For shareholders who are not preparing for a trip to outer space, the following is a list of the more common scenarios that may result in a shareholder receiving a taxable benefit:

A trip to Earths nearest star is mind-boggling – The Daily Nonpareil

The next nearest star to Earth, not counting our sun, is a star named Alpha Centauri and it takes light from that star four years to get to our eyes.

We must accept the fact that until our technological expertise gets to the point we can accelerate a living being at the speed of light, travel to the distant stars remains a moot point.

For the sake of conversation say we wanted to embark on a space venture to Alpha Centauri and our spacecraft had the capability of traveling at a speed of 40,000 miles per hour. Youll have to admit that is pretty fast but even at that speed, the trip is going to take 150,000 years to cover the distance.

Some might suggest we should place a space crew in some kind of suspended animation for the trip. If we cannot do that, our only solution would be to have a least one female on the crew.

No less than 6,240 generations of offspring will be born, live and die on the spacecraft before they reach their destination. And that, again, is just to our nearest star and only one way.

At a NASA meeting several months ago, the subject of births in space came up and the question was asked: Can you get pregnant in space?

Based on a study that was made last fall, it was predicted that cosmic radiation would bombard the body at such a high rate during a long space trip or even an extended stay on Mars that sperm count would decrease and the fetuses wouldnt be able to properly develop in a space environment.

Ongoing Trial Assesses New Anti-VEGF Gene Therapy Injection for nAMD – MD Magazine

No serious adverse events reported through 24 weeks of a 52 week trial.

A single-injection intravitreal gene therapy that can durably express an intraocular anti-VEGF agent could reduce the need for repeated anti-VEGF injections and improve outcomes for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD).

A team, led by Charles C. Wykoff, MD, PhD, Director of Clinical Research, Retina Consultants of Houston, presented initial findings at theAmerican Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS) 2020 Virtual Meeting on the safety and biological activity of a novel intravitreal anti-VEGF gene therapy in neovascular age-related macular degeneration.

A single-injection intravitreal gene therapy that can durably express an intraocular anti-VEGF agent could reduce the need for repeated anti-VEGF injections and improve outcomes for patients with nAMD.

In the ongoing phase 1 OPTIC study, the investigators are assessing the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of a single intravitreal injection of ADVM-022.

Included in the multicenter, open-label, multiple cohort, dose-ranging study are patients with nAMD who have demonstrated a response to anti-VEGF therapy, who were administered an intravitreal injection of ADVM-022 t 6x10^11 vg/eye for cohort 1 (n = 6) and at 2x10^11 vg/eye for cohort 2 (n = 6).

The investigators evaluated incidence and severity of adverse events, changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), change in central subfield thickness (CST), and the number of aflibercept rescue injections.

Patients in the first cohort previously received frequent anti-VEGF injections, with a mean of 6.2 injections in the preceding 8 months. This patient population also had relatively good baseline BCVA (mean 65.8 ETDRS letters) and a mean baseline CST of 369.2m.

The first 24 weeks of the trial have been positive, with no serious adverse events, dose limiting toxicities or non-ocular adverse events related to ADVM-022 reported.

While ocular inflammation was seen in all patients, it occurred most frequently in the anterior segment and was generally mild and manageable with topical steroids. BCVA was also maintained with a mean change of -2.0 ETDRS letters (90% CI, -9.1-5.1). CST improved with a mean change -52.7m (90% CI, -86.5 to -18.8).

Signs of CNV disease activity on OCT improved or stabilized in the entire patient population, with no rescue injections needed. The study will continue up to 52 total weeks.

ADVM-022 is designed to provide sustained therapeutic levels of aflibercept following a single intravitreal injection, the authors wrote. Patients in cohort 1 of OPTIC treated with a single injection of ADVM-022 were able to maintain vision and improve anatomical outcomes without receiving any rescue aflibercept injections through week 24.

In a separate study presented at ASRS 2020, researchers showed new data on the treatment burden and vision acuity on anti-VEGF injection patterns for nAMD.

In the study, the investigators reviewed the Level 1 evidence of currently approved anti-VEGF agents, as well as those likely to undergo review by regulatory authorities. The researchers analyzed the anti-VEGF agents and treatment dosing regimen for each study and collected the baseline ETDRS letters, mean number of injections over a 12-month period, and change in ETDRS letters over the course of 12 months.

They analyzed a total of 23 injection regiments from studies involving 6860 eyes, including 8 (31.6%, n = 2165) involving ranibizumab every 4 weeks or pro re nata and 6 (28.6%; n = 1962) involving aflibercept dosed every 4 or 8 weeks.

The study, Intravitreal Gene Therapy for Neovascular AMD With ADVM-022: Results of the Phase 1 OPTIC Trial, was published online by ASRS 2020.

CNN’s Brian Stelter: Claims of anti-conservative bias by tech giants are not backed up by data or science – Media Matters for America

BRIAN STELTER (CNN CHIEF MEDIA CORRESPONDENT): And the conversation about Google was really interesting. When you or I search on Google now, when we type in a question, oftentimes the result is a Google answer. Google is finding the answer or directing you to a Google site. That is a change in the Google algorithm. And sothat is an example of possible consumer harm. However, Google says that's an improvement, that's a benefit to the customer, because it's the best, fastest answer. So there you go, that's the tension, that's the story.

And then there's this parallel track, where you have some Republican lawmakers accusing these companies of anti-conservative biasand trying to get them to make certain commitments and promises. Let's just all remember the claims about bias in tech platforms are anecdotal, not backed up by data or science. These are stories, not statistics. But we're probably going to hear more of that from the Republicans in the coming minutes.
