Bitcoin jumps above $10,000 for the first time since June – CNBC

Bitcoin jumped above $10,000 for the first time since early June after relatively muted recent price action.

The digital currency was trading at$10,196.27 at around 12:31 p.m. Singapore time, 2.55% higher than 24 hours previously, according to data from Coindesk.

Bitcoin last crossed $10,000 on June 3 and has since seen a steady decline.But over the last 7 days, Bitcoin has risen nearly 11%.

Vijay Ayyar,head of business development at cryptocurrency exchange Luno, told CNBC that large players were debating whether to sell off their bitcoin to smaller entrants in the market which could push the price lower and make it more attractive for the bigger traders to buy more of the digital asset.

"This doesn't seem to have happened," Ayyar said. "What we have unfolding is potentially re-accumulation by big players, joined by smaller traders in an attempt to push BTC higher past 10K and more past 10.5K, which is the big resistance level, where BTC last put in a high."

"We still haven't broken the 10.5K level, if that happens, BTC is probably running to 15K. All signs point to that at this point," he added.

While bitcoin was higher last week, major Wall Street indices including the S&P 500 were lower. Gold, however, continued to rise and hit a record high on Monday. Gold is seen as a so-called safe-haven asset that investors buy in times of uncertainty.

Bitcoin has sometimes been called "digital gold" with advocates saying it could be a good safe-haven investment. However, bitcoin has tended to trade closer to equity markets in recent times and is known for its huge volatility.

Both equity markets and gold have been supported by recent economic stimulus packages from governments and central banks around the world in a bid to help fight the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. For example, the European Union reached a nearly 2 trillion euro recovery plan last week.

In addition, investors are closely watching the numerous coronavirus vaccines being developed around the world. Recently, Oxford University carried out early-stage human trials with pharmaceutical giantAstraZeneca. The drug produced a promising immune response, according todata published in the medical journal The Lancet.

Ayyar said that bitcoin could benefit from these stimulus measures as well as hopes for a vaccine.

"My view is that with the major governments declaring unprecedented stimulus packages ... we will see continued bullish momentum across markets. So that includes equities and gold as well. And BTC and crypto will follow on this regard. Added to the fact that a vaccine seems within reach as well now, no reason to be bearish near term," Ayyar said.

Major Investment Bank Oppenheimer Bullish on Bitcoin, Highlights Instead of Gold | News – Bitcoin News

U.S. investment bank Oppenheimers analyst says gold is extended and has run up a bit, bringing attention to bitcoin instead. He sees the cryptocurrency reversing its downtrend from the $20K peak, benefiting from the dollars weakness.

Ari Wald, head of technical analysis at Oppenheimer, a major American investment bank and financial services company, highlighted bitcoin this week on CNBCs program Trading Nation entitled Gold vs. Bitcoin.

He explained: Weve been recommending gold as a way to play the expansion of the Feds balance sheet Its actually the high momentum commodity, it ranks highest above all commodities out there in terms of momentum. While pointing out that gold is extended and has run up a bit, the analyst affirmed, We do recommend sticking with it. Nonetheless, he added:

I think its worthwhile to highlight bitcoin instead which isnt as extended Bitcoin is reversing its downtrend dating back to its 2017 peak. If you are a long-term holder, this is the type of action youd like to see.

Bitcoin is currently trading at about $10,970, having risen 17% this week and 54% this year. Its price is still well below its December 2017 peak of nearly $20,000. Wald noted that the cryptocurrencys recent breakout is setting up for more gains ahead and bitcoins long-term trendline suggests it has plenty of room to run. Meanwhile, the price of gold has hit record highs this week, rallying 8% this month and 28% this year.

Both gold and bitcoin are benefiting from the weakness of the U.S. dollar, Wald continued. Michael Binger, president of Gradient Investments, concurred with Wald about the dollar but he favors gold over bitcoin.

Binger opined: Between the two I would really lean on the gold side here. When you think about it, it is really a Goldilocks environment for gold investors right now. I mean, you have a weak U.S. dollar, you have negative real interest rates. All of this is based on the prospect of rising inflation. While agreeing with the Oppenheimer analyst that bitcoin is a momentum play, Binger still believes that it is not a valid currency yet.

ESPN Global Announces Online Gaming That Allows Bitcoin Deposits and Withdrawals – Bitcoin News

ESPN Global has announced the launch of a blockchain-powered gaming platform, which will allow competitors to deposit and withdraw using bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies through Cryptopay.

The platform is also integrating an online treasure hunt, Satoshis Treasure, with $1 million worth of bitcoin to be split among 1000 winners.

In a June 23 statement, the UK-based company, which is not affiliated with ESPN in the US, said it is in the pre-launch phase of a platform that will offer some of the most popular games in one mobile application for crypto prizes. Blockchain technology will decentralize verification and support for transactions inside the platform.

Cryptocurrency payment specialist Cryptopay is being used by ESPN Global, to make the process a lot simpler, swift and secure, the company announced. Users can choose a game or join a group of participants to compete in real-time and be awarded on the basis of highest score.

The platform also offers premium membership whereby one gets priority access to slots and early access to the most popular games. The mobile e-sports unit in UK falls under ESPN Global Corporation Ltd. which is headquartered in Poland.

An ESPN Global director, Mr. Chris Parker, spoke on the attraction of blockchain. As per a research done by 3EA Limited, a global strategic management consulting group, e-sports and online gaming is a $140 billion global industry driven predominantly by digital micro-transaction economies, which we believe will benefit immensely from the integrity and resilience of the Blockchain technology, he said.

The company is also integrating the recently launched game Satoshis Treasure. With this $1 million puzzle game Satoshis Treasure, we are promising a bounty-laden bitcoin wallet whose keys will be divided into 1,000 fragments, spawning a global hunt for the prize pieces, said Parker.

In the event of amassing a sizeable e-sport community, ESPN Global expects to launch an initial exchange offering of its Smart Gaming Token (SGT) based on the ERC-20 platform.

From the day we start our operations, we will be giving airdrops of SGTs to all registered players as a gift, Parker said. He added that all players who lose money in any game or tournament will be compensated with SGT airdrops equivalent to the losses credited to their ERC wallets.

The current valuation of SGT airdrop is $0.001, expected to increase with the growth of the gaming community. Premium members, who get double SGTs against the amount of super-contest, will also have their losses covered.

Chess Grandmaster Kasparov: Bitcoin Empowers the Public and Protects Dissidents | News – Bitcoin News

Russian human rights campaigner and chess supremo Gary Kasparov has said that the current economic crisis, which has led to unconventional monetary policy, will drive people towards bitcoin.

Bitcoins finite supply compares favorably to agenda-driven printing of money by governments, noted the Avast security ambassador, who also chairs the Human Rights Foundation and the Renew Democracy Initiative.

Speaking to Forbes on the intersection of human rights and new technologies, Kasparov said cryptocurrencies enable the public to regain control of personal finances at a time when unilateral moves by government and institutions are on the rise.

The good thing about bitcoin is that you know exactly the number the magic number of 21 million. And we understand the formula behind that. But when you look at the other side, the Fed for instance, you never know how many trillions of dollars will appear on the market tomorrow that will damage your savings, he observed.

Kasparov said cryptocurrencies potential for abuse gets overstated but it is the upside which must be harnessed to empower individuals. Crypto offers means to protect personal finances against inflation and state interference and anything that can offer us the opportunity to take back control or some control of our privacy is always welcome, the chess grandmaster said.

Thats why I think the steady rise in popularity of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology as a concept is inevitable, because its a response to the shift of power from individuals to states or other institutions that may act on our privacy without our consent, he added.

As chairperson of the Human Rights Foundation, Kasparov has promoted blockchain and cryptocurrency as a means to empower dissidents around the world.

For us, it was important for us to address every violation of human rights, and we were trying to help these people, most of them under severe attacks by their governments even if they left their countries, their financial accounts were hacked, their information was stolen so we have been providing special training courses.

He continued: Weve invited famous hackers to help them and to work with them we have been using every opportunity to offer them extra protection, and of course blockchain and bitcoin were very natural choices to incorporate into this strategy.

Kasparov also criticised the discriminatory treatment of customers from one territory to the other by tech giants and encouraged internet users to practice digital hygiene to stay safe from governments and other third parties.

MIT Lightning Creator Unveils First ‘Demonstration’ of Bitcoin Scaling Tech – CoinDesk – CoinDesk

The infrastructure propping up Bitcoin might become easier for anyone to spin up and run.

Lightning creator Tadge Dryja has been working on a new design for a lighter weight Bitcoin full node, about which he first wrote a paper in 2019. Last week, he and a team of coders released a first version of the Utreexo software as a part of MIT Digital Currency Initiative (DCI), putting the idea of lighter nodes into working code.

Full Bitcoin nodes act like financial security systems, validating Bitcoin blockchain transactions and protecting users from being tricked into thinking they received money that they didnt. But they take up a lot of computing space and are quickly growing in size.

Since these nodes are the most trustless way of using Bitcoin, developers have long been trying to make them easier to use. Its one of Bitcoins nerdy holy grails.

Utreexo specifically tackles the size of the state of a full node, which shows up-to-date information about who owns how much bitcoin. Utreexo slashes this state size from roughly four gigabytes to less than a kilobyte. In that regard, it could be a big breakthrough.

Utreexo is a new scalability technology for Bitcoin, which can make Bitcoin nodes smaller and faster while keeping the same security and privacy as full nodes, Dryja wrote in the blog post announcing the release.

But it hasnt been implemented fully yet, which is why it is a big deal to see Dryja releasing a first version of it. The project still has a long journey to go before users can begin using the nodes to plant a flag of financial self-sovereignty. But its a crucial first step.

A 'super-pruned node'

Bitcoin full nodes hold every transaction ever made, clocking in at about 200 GB today.

Pruned full nodes are able to reduce the size of the transaction history to as low as a half a gigabyte, about the size required to store an episode of a TV show.

But this doesnt tackle the storage of Bitcoins Unspent Transaction Outputs (UTXOs), which tallies up how much bitcoin is linked to each bitcoin address. This batch of data takes up a little less than 4 GB of data.

This UTXO state has grown rapidly over time and it is likely to continue growing, making it harder to run full nodes.

Thats where Utreexo comes in. With the help of fancy, new cryptography, its possible to replace this bulk of state with one tiny cryptographic proof that takes up much less storage.

Utreexo is a novel hash based dynamic accumulator, which allows the millions of unspent outputs to be represented in under a kilobyte small enough to be written on a sheet of paper, Dryja explains on the MIT DCI website.

Because it does what a pruned node does, plus more, one bitcoiner called it a super-pruned node, Dryja told CoinDesk.

Challenging SPV

Trying to shave down these hefty Bitcoin full nodes is far from a new pursuit. Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) is probably the most popular version of a lightweight node, used by Electrum and other wallets.

Utreexo is similar to SPV in that it doesnt require nearly as much computer storage space as a full node. But SPV nodes dont preserve user privacy as well and are more susceptible to attacks than Utreexo nodes are.

Since Utreexo offers these security benefits, Dryja hopes it might chip away at SPVs dominance in the space (as long as writing the Utreexo software goes as well as planned). I think it would be great if it replaced SPV to some extent, allowing an Electrum-like user experience but with Bitcoin Core security, he told CoinDesk.

But in the end, he doesnt think itll replace SPV completely, as SPV is still easier to run.

I think it will be a bit in between. [Utreexo nodes are] heavier than SPV but lighter than current full nodes, so some SPV users may switch to Utreexo, and some current full node users will switch as well, he said.

He also imagines that since Utreexo nodes are so much easier to run, theyll be much more common than normal full nodes.

Longer term, I can definitely see almost all full nodes using a Utreexo-like design, and nodes which store the entire state and history would be more like current blockchain explorer websites or Electrum servers there will still be some, but no normal users will run their own, Dryja said.

Careful next steps

Utreexo developers now put forward a proof of concept, showing that the idea can be turned into a real working product. But they still have a lot of work to do, including ironing out bugs to make the mini node suitable for real money.

The software also operates on testnet, the Bitcoin testing network, and is not recommended for use with real money. There are still plenty of known bugs and inefficiencies in the code, but were improving it at a rapid pace, Dryja writes.

Theyll eventually have to make the Utreexo node compatible with the nodes already running on the Bitcoin network. To do this, developers will eventually need to modify Bitcoin Core, the most popular Bitcoin node software.

But this could be dangerous. Utreexo is a significant re-thinking of how Bitcoin works, changing consensus-critical code, Dryja writes.

It is thus likely to be difficult to get Utreexo code into Bitcoin Core, and with good reason. We want to be very sure to not introduce problems into a system handling so many peoples money, Dryja said.

Thats why theyve decided to see if they can try to add Utreexos magical powers to alternative Bitcoin node software Btcd first, because its not used by nearly as many people to secure their money, and in the process learn more about how it affects full node operation, Dryja said. The next step will be eventually applying what they learned to Bitcoin Core.

UK health secretary says GP consultations should be remote by default – Healthcare IT News

In a speech on the future of healthcare and lessons for the NHS from the coronavirus pandemic, health secretary, Matt Hancock, said all GP appointments should be done remotely by default unless a patient needs to be seen in person.

Hancock admitted that while some mistakes were made, so many things went right in the response to the pandemic, and remote consultations should continue.

However, the Royal College of GPs have expressed concern, with some arguing remote consultations increased stress levels for patients and doctors and that removing face-to-face appointments could take the human touch out of general practice.

WHY IT MATTERS

Seventy-one per cent of routine GP consultations in the four weeks leading up to 12 April were delivered remotely. This represents a significant increase from just 25% for the same period a year ago.

AGPonlinepoll revealed thatmost GPs think more than half of consultations should continue to be delivered remotely after the pandemicsubsides.

Despite this, the research also showed that there are still concerns around the harm to relationships with patients and the risk of missing serious conditions, with many patients needing physical examinations and vaccines.

THE LARGER CONTEXT

According to the Digital health: the changing landscape of how we access GP services report, online GPs could save employers 1.5 billion in lost working time.

In this report, researchers estimated that if virtual GP appointments had been offered as a first point of call across all public GP practices in 2019, face-to-face consultations could have been reduced by 50 million.

This process has shown that patients and clinicians alike, not just the young who want to use technology. [People] don't want to sit around in a waiting room, if that service can come to them at home.

So from now on, all consultations should be teleconsultations, unless there's a compelling clinical reason not to.

He added: Of course, if there's an emergency the NHS will be ready and waiting to see you in person. But if they are able to patients should get in contact first by the web, or by calling in advance.

Springfield Museums to Present ‘Heroes in Healthcare’ Exhibit – Business West

SPRINGFIELD The Springfield Museums will present Heroes in Healthcare: Celebrating Springfields Medical Community at the Wood Museum of Springfield History from Aug. 3 through Jan. 24, 2021.

As a complementary exhibit to Hall of Heroes, located on the first floor of the Wood Museum of Springfield History, Heroes in Healthcare pinpoints the deep appreciation we all feel for those who put themselves in harms way in order to help others.

From the Civil War through present day, doctors and nurses, public-health employees, social workers, and philanthropists have contributed significantly to improving the health of this community with their skills, compassion, and vision. This exhibit examines that history in Springfield.

As stewards of the Baystate Medical Center archives, including materials from its Training School for Nurses, museum staff were able to gather a rich history of healthcare in Springfield, said Maggie Humberston, curator of Library and Archives for the Springfield Museums. We drew on that collection with its assortment of photographs and institutional history to recount a story of outreach and care, and a long history of striving to meet the public need.

The Visiting Nurses Assoc. archives are also held at the Wood Museum. Humberston delved into that collection to share remarkable stories of how visiting nurses traveled to the homes of people of all economic backgrounds to not only treat disease, but also to offer wellness training, childcare advice, and, often, a sympathetic ear.

As she researched the local response to the Spanish influenza of 1918, Humberston discovered similar efforts to our own today as we work together to stem the spread of COVID-19 by wearing masks and maintaining social distance. Gauze masks and open air were deemed very important in combating the Spanish influenza, she said. Social distancing was practiced, and people were encouraged to walk to reduce crowding in railroad and streetcars, while streetcars were disinfected every night. The clergy decided to close the churches, and the Board of Health closed just about everything else.

With the World Health Organizations declaration of 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, the museums dedicate a part of this exhibit to specifically celebrating the citys nurses. The museums will also present a Wall of Healthcare Heroes to honor the courageous and dedicated work of area hospitals frontline responders.

When we brought the Hall of Heroes to the Museums, we knew how important it would be to celebrate real-life heroes with a complementary exhibit, said Kay Simpson, president and CEO of the Springfield Museums. Words are limited. They are very often (even when we wish otherwise) inadequate to perfectly convey intent, context and meaning.

The word unprecedented is bandied about quite a bit these days and as we are just beginning to stumble almost sleepwalking through the weird landscapes, the unprecedented COVID-19 crisis has laid before us.

We are left to figure out the path ahead on our ownwithout a map or even a piece of string to guide us through the labyrinth.

COVID-19 is like the dye on a deadly and perverse egg shell, it has exposed all the cracks and fractures which pre-existed this plague, it will take eternal vigilance to assure the stresses of what has been exposed doesnt collapse the entire structure.

Paul Reville, the Francis Keppel Professor of Practice of Educational Policy and Administration at Harvard Graduate School of Education, when asked during an interview with The Harvard Gazette to enumerate those things which surprised him most about the COVID-19 education crisis stated:

One thats most striking to me is that because schools are closed, parents and the general public have become more aware than at any time in my memory of the inequities in childrens lives outside of school. Suddenly we see front-page coverage about food deficits, inadequate access to health and mental health, problems with housing stability, and access to educational technology and the internet. Those of us in education know these problems have existed forever. What has happened is like a giant tidal wave that came and sucked the water off the ocean floor, revealing all these uncomfortable realities that had been beneath the water from time immemorial. This newfound public awareness of pervasive inequities, I hope, will create a sense of urgency in the public domain. We need to correct for these inequities in order for education to realize its ambitious goals. We need to redesign our systems of child development and education. The most -obvious place to start for schools is working on equitable access to educational technology as a way to close the digital-learning gap.

Digital learning, no matter its intrinsic inadequacies or advantages, is the method of instruction which, for the foreseeable future, will be taking a prominent role in education in the United States during the pandemic.

Digital Divide

The digital divide or lack of access to the internet is most acute in Black, Brown and rural families. According to The Pew Research Center, the technology needed to access the internet is still out of reach for far too many low-income families. Among families which earn less than thirty thousand dollars a year, 29 percent dont have access to a smartphone, 44 percent dont have access to broadband, while 46 percent dont have access to a laptop or P.C. nor do they own tablets. These yawning deficits complicate an already daunting set of circumstances.

They are further compounded by issues of connectivityspeed. The magazine Techcrunch reported in California, 1,529,000 K-12 students dont have the connectivity required for adequate distance learning. These same students lack an adequate device as well. They warned, The homework gap that separates those with strong connections from those on the wrong side of the digital divide will become a homework chasm without drastic and immediate intervention. For the Black community, these deficits can also lead to our nemesis, the school to prison pipeline.

In Michigan, a girl by the name of Grace was placed in juvenile detention for failing to complete her online homework during quarantine.

Grace, who has special needs (ADHD), was pushed into the pipeline for minor infractions. She is currently being held after a judge refused to release her. This, despite Michigans Governor having ordered the suspension of assignment to detention, unless the student is considered, a substantial and immediate risk to others.

The risk of falling afoul of the law is as ever-present for Black children as it was before the pandemic.

In California, several programs have been announced to provide some relief to low income students, however much is left to be done.

Thousands of digital devices have been donated to the most vulnerable, still most remain in need and while there have been partnerships and attempts to address access and connectivity issuesmany of these programs and partnerships must be expanded and renewed.

COVID-19 and Children

As has been said a million times before, when White America catches a cold Black America catches the flu. But what do we catch when what is in the air is a deadly virus?

The response to the crises has been completely inadequate for the majority. Governmental aid has been a patchwork, spotty and totally dependent upon a mish mash of random factorsrace, socio-economic status and unsurprisingly, yet especially galling, geography.

The complete balkanization of our COVID-19 response and the novelty of the disease makes it extraordinarily difficult to evaluate with any assurance of what is happening on the ground.

The management of the pandemic has become so poisonously politicized, the very basic function of a civilized societyto provide a structure upon which its constituent members may act in coordination with one another to do what is best for itselfhas been completely compromised. We are told that even the numbers of people who have been sickened or have died from this disease are not being correctly tracked or reported. Depending on dueling sources, the true numbers have been either over or underestimated.

On June 25, 2020, Time Magazine reported infection rates may be under-reported by as much as 10 times the current estimations and that was before, according to an article in the Washington Post dated July 14, 2020, the President changed the COVID-19 reporting hierarchies taking the data collection process out of the hands of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the agency tasked with heading and managing the response to outbreaks of disease in this country.

Regardless of who now collects the data, infection rates in the United States are climbing alarmingly, making the U.S. one of the largest current reservoirs of the deadly virus reflected in the numbers of cases as well as deaths.

It is in this chaotic environment many parents are being asked to make the heavy decision of whether to and when to return children to school without understanding all the dangers they, their families and school personnel may face.

A few schools in California are asking teachers and staff to sign liability waivers to prevent them from suing in case they come down with the disease and some have been illegally fired for refusing to sign them.

On the federal level, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has threatened to hold up any relief to families unless corporations receive blanket immunity protections from COVID-19 lawsuits. While the California legislature is in the process of trying to pass similar legislationAB 1384 to protect school districts.

On Tuesday, July 28, The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), 1.7 million strong, stated they are prepared to strike if districts dont protect the students and staff in their care. The AFT has a specific stipulation of what safety looks like including COVID-19 transmission rates of less than one percent and positive rates under five percent. As a state, we are nowhere near either goal.

While the virus is purportedly less deadly in children, children have and are continuing to die from this disease as well as an associated disorder called MIS-C. The current state of medical knowledge has not given us a clear picture of the connections between the two diseases or even clear data on the rates of lethality. Children have been home since the shelter in place order was given, lending an experimental air to this all.

Florida, which shut down later than other places and opened earlier than most, is currently experiencing a steep rise in cases of children with this disease with 31 percent testing positive for COVID-19 and a 23 percent jump in hospitalizations. Florida is on a tear with a thousand children a day testing positive over a period of eight days.

On top of these concerns, schools, some in terrible states of want and disrepair before the pandemic, will be asked to reliably take on the additional expenses to provide a clean and properly sanitized environment for students to learn in, while providing staffing levels to assure social distancing requirements are metall of which seem very unlikely.

This for many communities so food insecure, school breakfasts and lunches are the only meals students can reliably count on each day.

Its More Than Just Bad Blood

On Fox news this weekend Dr. Ozwhose previous reputational issues have been held up to scrutinysuggested that reopening schools, are an especially appetizing place to start reopening the economy. This is based on a study in the Lancet which coldly calculates the collateral damage of this bug to low- income and middle-class children which, according to Oz, was projected to be a mere two to three percent loss of life.

Never mind that nothing and no one belonging to Dr Oz will be repeatedly exposed to the same dangers Black children will face. Many Black children will be returning to chronically underfunded, over-looked and neglected facilities.

It is not just Dr. Oz. Talking points have gone out and you can hear the faint drum beat of the suggestion that these lives arent as important as the man-made construct called the economy. That drumbeat will get louder.

It is not the first time our people have heard these discordant sounds. Many are familiar with the infamous Tuskegee syphilis experiments where adult men with syphilis were allowed to rot from the disease just to see what would happen, even though they could have been cured with penicillin.

When these naive men or their families asked what was wrong with them, they were told they had bad blood. Some people may even be familiar with how Black female slaves were tortured and abused by the father of gynecology James Marion Sims, to develop the tools used today in that discipline.

However, few are aware of the lead paint experiments John Hopkins University conducted (with the aid of government grants) on poor Black families in Baltimore in the 1990s to find cheaper ways of disposing of toxic lead paint. Some of this lead waste was purposefully ground up to make fertilizer which was spread on the lawns where poor Black chicken played. Lead, as are all heavy metals, is toxic to the human body and can damage the brain and nervous system, causing lifelong disability and even death.

Readers may also be unfamiliar with the unethical experiments conducted on Black and Brown children in New York City where six to ten-year-old boys were dosed with fenfluramine (Fen-Fen) intravenously. These unethical experiments were conducted at the New York Psychiatric Institute which is affiliated with Columbia University. Ironically, these experiments, which ended in 1996, were to test whether violent or criminal behavior can be predicted by the levels of certain brain chemicalscriminal lapses of the Hippocratic Oath and the medical code of ethics, notwithstanding. The babies were the younger brothers of children already in the criminal justice system the experimenters identified through court records. The experiment is a strong reminder of the atrocities of the Eugenics era.

Those Who Fail To Learn From the Past

Authorities are still planning on some kind of physical presence in schools this upcoming school year. Schools in the inland region, like many places in the state, will be unable to reopen for in-person instruction until the respective county, Riverside or San Bernardino, has remained off the states watch list for 14 consecutive days.

The Los Angeles School District has announced it plans to begin the school year onlineleaving open the date which in person instruction will begin.

Without accurate information on the effects of this virus on children, let alone adults, parents are left trying to make life and death decisions blindly.

Meanwhile, talking heads and politicians ramble on about herd immunity and acceptable risk/loss. Many of them, as always, may not feel they have as much skin in the game as Blacks and other minorities. They appear to encourage the essential to play with their lives for very little in return.

Towards a great forest transition – part 1 – The Ecologist

The Covid-19 pandemic did not come out of the blue. It was a symptom of the fundamental structures of industrial civilization, and it is an early warning signal for how this civilization is rapidly eroding the very conditions of its own existence.

Over the last decade, environmental scientists have warned that human activities are increasingly at risk of the breaching planetary boundaries thatdefine the environmental limits in which humanity can safely operate.

As industrial civilisation increasingly encroaches on natural ecosystems, we are reducing this safe operating space for human survival.

Impasse

Deforestation is one of the most intractable and yet most potent drivers of environmental crisis. It is also among the four out of nine planetary boundaries that civilisation was already at high risk of crossing five years ago according to research published in the journal Science.

Other boundaries we were on the brink of breaching at that time included the rate at which species were going extinct, levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, and the flow of nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment due to industrial agriculture. The further we breach these and other planetary boundaries, the greater the risk of irreversibly driving the Earth into a less hospitable state for humanity.

Five years on, the eruption of the Covid-19 pandemic has exposed the extent to which we are gradually eroding and reducing this safe operating space for human survival, a fact that is evident in the structural impasse we now face: allowing the virus to run through the population leads to massive fatality rates, collapsing healthcare systems, and crashing GDP; locking down to suppress the virus results in haemorrhaging demand, the contraction of multiple industrial sectors, and crashing GDP.

Both those scenarios entail mass deaths of vulnerable populations over varying levels of time, whether from disease or other socio-economic impacts. And a business-as-usual trajectory heralds more of the same.

Pandemic

A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme points out that the Covid-19 pandemic is essentially a dry-run for what could be an even worse pandemic. It is part of a rising trend in zoonotic diseases circulating among animal hosts jumping to humans, driven by core processes of industrial expansion which, if they continue, are bound to trigger the next pandemic.

The pandemic has thus pushed human civilisation into a state of retreat, as part of a much wider complex of expanding industrial processes.

Despite this, most governments, policymakers and business leaders do not understand the scale of the crisis or its true nature. They are clamouring for a return to business-as-usual to simply get economies moving again with little reflection on how this would only reinforce the behaviours that got us into this intractable mess in the first place.

As the global combination of societal disruption, strained healthcare infrastructures, lockdowns and social distancing have strained normal economic activity, this has put as at risk of ditching seemingly costly environmental commitments. Amidst such pressures, it is no surprise to see that deforestation driven by logging activity has accelerated in Brazil, Colombia, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal and Madagascar during the Covid-19 pandemic partly due to reduced environmental monitoring by authorities and harsh economic consequences amidst lockdown regimes.

In the context of the pandemic, does the challenge of deforestation represent industrial civilisations breaching of a key planetary land-system boundary around five years ago? This question is particularly pertinent given that even while enduring one of its dire consequences in the form of the Covid-19 pandemic, progress in addressing deforestation is at risk of reversing exactly when we need to be immediately putting an end to deforestation once and for all.

Fire drill

According to Professor Kees van Veen, scientific director of the Sustainable Society programme at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, the pandemic can be understood as another expression of the fact that humanity pushes the planetary boundaries. The growing world population increases the chances that someone somewhere will be affected with a new and dangerous virus.

"These chances increase due to the fact that humanity exposes itself more and more to different virus habitats by penetrating the biosphere deeper and deeper. Combined with our very efficient and global transportation networks between densely populated urban areas, viruses can spread very quickly and new accidents are waiting to happen.

Yet Covid-19 is not simply a dry-run for the next pandemic it is also, as executive director of the UN Global Compact Lise Kingo has said, a fire drill for climate catastrophe. Deforestation is among the top drivers of global heating, contributing nearly a tenth of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to tree cover loss from tropical forests. This is so large that if tropical deforestation were a country, it would rank a third in global CO2 emissions behind China and the United States.

The Covid-19 pandemic thus offers us a moment of awakening. We have arrived at an inflection point for the human species. The world needs new global approaches to tackle deforestation to not only avert the next pandemic, but to avert climate catastrophe, along with other forms of biodiversity collapse and ecological crisis.

If we fail to do this, we face an intensifying perfect storm of ecologically-linked catastrophes that will increasingly erode the safe operating space for human survival. That process of erosion as we breach planetary boundaries has already begun. We need to bring it to an end, right now.

Collapse

The problem of deforestation provides a powerful window into how intractable the processes of environmental destruction really are. These processes are baked into the core structures of production and consumption that sustain industrial civilisation as we know it.

In 2013, the UNs Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) assessed that deforestation was responsible for up to 10 percentof human-induced carbon dioxide emissions. But when taking into account forest degradation negative impacts on a forests structure or function which do not decrease its area size as well CO2 emissions tropical peatlands, this figure rises to 15 percent.

Satellite data for the period 2003-14 shows that tropical forests have now ceased to act as carbon sinks, because they emit more carbon than they capture due to deforestation and degradation.

Deforestation also exacerbates heating at local scales within tropical ecosystems. A recent study in Environment Research Letters found local warming larger than that predicted from more than a century of climate change under a worst-case emissions scenario.

The larger the patches of deforestation, the more extreme are the local warming impacts. As a result, the combined effects of deforestation and climate change on tropical temperatures present a uniquely difficult challenge to the long term public health, occupational safety, and economic security of tropical populations.

Consumption

But deforestation also endangers critical planetary ecosystems in more direct ways ways which, if undermined, in themselves could endanger the safe operating space for humanity.

Before the development of human civilisations, the Earth was covered by 60 million square kilometres of forest. As deforestation has accelerated due to the human footprint on the planet, there are now less than 40 million square kilometres of forest remaining.

In May, a shocking new study published in Nature Scientific Reports, by physicists Dr Gerardo Aquino of the Alan Turing Institute in London and Professor Mauro Bologna of the University of Tarapacs Department of Electronic Engineering, came to a stark conclusion based on examining this dynamic.

Their study in particular modelled human-forest interactions over the last few decades, along with its potential impact on the viability of human civilisation. Their findings were alarming:Calculations show that, maintaining the actual rate of population growth and resource consumption, in particular forest consumption, we have a few decades left before an irreversible collapse of our civilisation."

Tracking the current rate of resource consumption against the rate of deforestation, the authors found that statistically the probability to survive without facing a catastrophic collapse, is very low. At the current rate of deforestation, they projected that all the worlds forests would disappear within approximately 100-200 years.

As forests provide critical services to the life-support systems necessary for human survival on the planet including carbon storage, oxygen production, soil conservation, water cycle regulation, support for natural and human food systems, and homes for countless species it is highly unlikely to imagine the survival of many species, including ours, on Earth without them.

Catastrophic

On that scenario, human civilisation would begin to collapse long before the terminal point for planetary-scale forest destruction, potentially well within the next two to four decades.

The study authors wrote:In conclusion our model shows that a catastrophic collapse in human population, due to resource consumption, is the most likely scenario of the dynamical evolution based on current parameters.

"Adopting a combined deterministic and stochastic model we conclude from a statistical point of view that the probability that our civilisation survives itself is less than 10 percent in the most optimistic scenario. Calculations show that, maintaining the actual rate of population growth and resource consumption, in particular forest consumption, we have a few decades left before an irreversible collapse of our civilisation.

This verdict would seem to indicate that there is an over 90 percent probability of a collapse of industrial civilisation due to deforestation alone this is extraordinarily high.

Industry

Since 1990, industrial expansion has resulted in the loss of some 420 million hectares of forest overall, and the decrease of old-growth primary forest worldwide by over 80 million hectares.

The main driver of deforestation and forest degradation is agricultural expansion, in particular large-scale commercial agriculture which is responsible for some 80 percent of global deforestation. Between 2000 and 2010, the latter types of agriculture accounted for some 40 percent of tropical deforestation, and local subsistence agriculture for another 33 percent.

Of the worlds major political institutions, the European Union has perhaps been at the forefront of developing new legislative and policy approaches to tackling deforestation. But there are strong grounds to suspect that these approaches are not fit for purpose and may well even deepen the challenge.

A new study by the EU Commission in February found that the agricultural expansion behind deforestation is driven by growing demand for key products like soy, beef and vegetable oils such as palm oil, rapeseed and sunflower. And while the production of such commodities often takes place in developing countries in South America, West Africa and Southeast Asia, the reality is that much of the impetus for the production comes from Western consumers: approximately a third of globally-traded agricultural products linked to deforestation were consumed by European countries between 1990 and 2008.

Thus, deforestation is not just a problem outside the West. New research published in July in the journal Nature Researchshowed that deforestation rates in EU forests are picking up steam. Forests account for some 38 percent of the EUs land surface area. They are harvested regularly for timber production.

But between 2016 and 2018, the loss of biomass due to harvesting increased by 69 percent, compared with the period from 2011 to 2015. The area of forest harvested also increased by 49 percent over these time-scales.

Palm oil

The study attributed this upsurge in European deforestation to increased demand for wood for timber and as a fuel, among other wood products.

The abrupt increase in deforestation poses a serious threat to the EU meeting its climate mitigation targets:If such a high rate of forest harvest continues, the post-2020 EU vision of forest-based climate mitigation may be hampered, and the additional carbon losses from forests would require extra emission reductions in other sectors in order to reach climate neutrality by 2050.

Yet in its recent efforts to address deforestation since 2015, the EUs overwhelming focus has been not on its own direct complicity in deforestation, but rather on the role of external commodities.

In fact, the commodity that comes in for the most trenchant criticism as reflected in the most recent draft EU legal framework to stop deforestation is palm oil. The proposed draft framework builds on the EUs already existing approach: in 2019, the EU decided to cease categorising palm oil for biodiesel as a renewable energy product, and began implementing a planned phase-out.

Palm oil has undoubtedly been one of the major drivers of deforestation, particularly in parts of Southeast Asia. The region has experienced the highest rate of deforestation of any major tropical region, losing 1.2 percent of forest annually, compared to Latin America (0.8 per cent) and Africa (0.7 per cent). At this rate, Southeast Asia will lose three-quarters of its forests and 42 percent of its biodiversity by the end of this century.

Beef

While a major driver, palm oil is not in fact the biggest driver of deforestation.

In 2019, I reported on a major new study in the Global Environmental Change journal which found that between 2010 and 2014, beef and oilseed production accounted for over half of carbon emissions from tropical deforestation. The study also quantified precisely which products were more responsible for deforestation than others.

It concluded that the biggest global driver of carbon emissions induced by deforestation is beef production in Brazil, the rest of Latin America, and Africa, accounting for some 34 percent of emissions. The next major driver is from oilseeds products such as vegetable oils, at around 20 percent.

The study was able to disaggregate responsibility for emissions in another way. Latin America overall bears the bulk of responsibility, accounting for just under a third of deforestation-linked carbon emissions, with Brazil alone driving a fifth of emissions. Overall, palm oil produced in the Asia-Pacific accounted for 14 per cent a substantial amount, but still less than half of the former.

It is also worth noting that by far the biggest culprit in Asia is Indonesia one of the worlds biggest palm oil producers accounting for ten percent of deforestation emissions. The other main palm oil Asian producer of course is Malaysia, which would fit within the remaining fourpercent of emissions.

Policy

This analysis builds on previous data. In 2013, a report by the European Commission found that between 1990 and 2008, large imports of soybean products mainly from South America accounted for roughly 82 percent of deforestation attributed to the import of oil crops into the EU. This contrasted with palm oil imports from Southeast Asia, which contributed about 17 percent of deforestation associated with EU27 oil crops imports, imported primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia.

Armed with this data, we are equipped to realise that the EUs attempt to tackle deforestation through a de facto ban on palm oil for biofuels, while largely neglecting strong legislative and policy action to address rocketing beef and soy consumption, makes little environmental sense.

Indeed, a new study in July revealed that around half of Brazils beef exports and nearly a quarter of its soy exports to the EU could be from zones which were illegally deforested in the Amazon and Cerrado. The EU is thus directly complicit in the biggest drivers of deforestation, yet has done next to nothing to address this.

But the available scientific evidence suggests that the prevalent approach to stopping deforestation focused largely on the strategy of boycotting particular commodities is unlikely to work. In part 2 of this series, I explore more effective policy responses.

Ending deforestation will require not just looking at legislation to compel Others out there to change course while we relentlessly accelerate our own path of endless growth. It will means, therefore, scaling back our complicity in the fundamental drivers of the endless growth machine.

Mike Foltynewicz clears waivers, sent to Braves alternate site – Sports and Weather Right Now

ATLANTA Right-hander Mike Foltynewicz has cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Atlanta Braves alternate training site.

No team chose to take on the $2.13 million remaining in Foltnewiczs 2020 contract. He was designated for assignment by the Braves on Tuesday following an alarming drop in velocity in summer camp and in his 14-5 loss at Tampa Bay on Monday night.

The 28-year-old Foltynewicz allowed six runs, three homers and four walks in 3 1/3 innings in the loss.

He now will have a chance to regain his strength and velocity at the Triple-A Gwinnett alternate site. The Braves hope he can turn it around the way he did after he was demoted to Gwinnett last year.

Good for him to be able to go there and see if he can get himself going again, Braves manager Brian Snitker said Thursday.

With everybody needing pitching, I didnt know if somebody would come in and take a chance with him. Remembering how he has thrown in the past, I figured somebody would take a crack at him.

Snitker said the Braves can use as many guys as we can have in the system.

Foltynewicz was an All-Star in 2018, but since then has endured some ups and downs. He spent almost two months in the minors last year before returning to post a 6-1 record and 2.65 ERA over his last 10 appearances with Atlanta.

He allowed only three hits over seven innings in a 3-0 Game 2 win over St. Louis in the NL Division Series. The right-hander then had a meltdown in Game 5, when he recorded only one out and allowed six earned runs in the decisive 13-1 loss.

The Fight review: A jubilant look at changing the world for the better – Evening Standard

This is a jubilant and mischievous documentary that suggests changing the world for the better is something we can all do.

Five lawyers who work for the non-profit organisation ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) are shown fighting four cases. Each case has its own twists and turns. The attorneys are just as distinct. Brigitte Amiri, for example, is as trendy and hyper-gleeful as rock icon/comedian Carrie Brownstein. Watch Amiris face as she decides, on a train journey, that its time for train wine!

Meanwhile, controversies connected to the organisation are embraced rather than swerved. The ACLUs executive director Anthony D. Romero fought for alt-right activists to get a permit so they could demonstrate in Charlottesville. Not everyone in the company, let alone the world, agreed with the decision. Fights, and in-fighting, are the order of the day.

Most of these lawyers are surprisingly well-off. Still the charming Chase Strangio, who works for LGBTQ rights, has a non-sproncey sitting room and, as he points out, his office is pokier than everyone elses (it really is tiny).

What the lawyers have in common is energy to spare and an approach best described as informal. Technological disasters befall them (errant voice-recognition software converts a dry piece of legalese into a missive on hors doeuvres and Ben Affleck). The team also stumble over their words, forget to read the small print and have children and colleagues who do not always gaze at them with complete admiration. The heroes of this movie arent perfect, which is what makes them such a joy to root for.

If LeBron James shoots a jumper but no fans are there to see it, did he shoot a jumper?

We kid. But on Thursday, the N.B.A. made its return at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., with several of its most visible stars, including James, Zion Williamson, Kawhi Leonard and Anthony Davis taking part in a doubleheader. The games were sloppy the rust after a four-month layoff was real but they were nonetheless compelling, both of them coming down to the final seconds.

The most striking images came before the games, when members of all four teams kneeled during the national anthem. Several players wore Black Lives Matter T-shirts. The N.B.A. ran commercials with coaches and players expressing their desire to fight for social justice.

In the opener between the Utah Jazz and the New Orleans Pelicans, the game came down to a final shot. Brandon Ingram of the Pelicans rimmed out a last second 3-pointer, and the Jazz pulled out a 106-104 win. Jordan Clarkson led the Jazz with 23 points off the bench.

The Los Angeles Lakers led for much of their game against their crosstown rivals, the Clippers. But like the opener, this game came down to the final possession. After James made a tip shot with 12 seconds left, Paul George missed a contested 3-pointer for the Clippers as time expired, much like at the end of the opening game. The Lakers won, 103-101.

Heres how the Lakers beat the Clippers, and how the Jazz came back to beat the Pelicans.

The highly anticipated N.B.A. restart tipped off with a symbol of solidarity, rather than rivalry. Pelicans and Jazz players, coaches and staff kneeled together in front of a Black Lives Matter floor mural painted on the edge of the court as a wordless rendition of the national anthem by the musician Jon Batiste played.

It was the first of many demonstrations for social justice causes expected this season. 1. Both teams, as expected, were sloppy in their first game since March. The Jazz and Pelicans each had 20 turnovers, well above their season averages.

How the Lakers beat the Clippers

The two titans of the West tipped off with Lakers center JaVale McGee landing a clean shot with help from league-assist-leader LeBron James, who had two assists within the first couple of minutes and five by the end of the first quarter. The Lakers ended the first quarter ahead, 35-23.

Paul George, a six-time All-Star, scored the Clippers first points and led the team with 8 points out the gate.

Both teams were missing players. The Clippers were without Lou Williams and Montrezl Harrell, both of whom left the campus. Williams has since returned and is still in quarantine, while Harrells status is unknown. The Lakers do not have Rajon Rondo, who broke his thumb while in the bubble, or Avery Bradley, who opted to skip the Disney World restart.

Lakers forward Anthony Davis who almost didnt play because of an eye injury had 14 points in the first quarter. Davis got into a tit-for-tat dunk battle with Clippers forward Joakim Noah, who smacked what shouldve been a clear shot for Davis out of his hands only to have Davis come back and dunk on him minutes later. Both forwards secured three rebounds in the first quarter.

After a rough first quarter, Clippers guard Kawhi Leonard came back with a fury, landing a strong 3-pointer in the first few minutes, rocketing himself to an impressive 19 points in 16 minutes. Leonard, who helped lead the Toronto Raptors to their first championship last season, ranks eighth in the league for points per game.

The Lakers Anthony Davis had 20 points in 16 minutes. Forward Kyle Kuzma also locked in a couple of threes. But LeBron James only scored 6 points on 2-of-9 shooting (22 percent), with 6 rebounds.

Strong defense prevented success on both sides: The Clippers ended with a 56 percent sink rate. The Lakers, 51 percent.

There was some, uh, hope from N.B.A. fans that the lack of people in the seats at the Disney World arenas would allow those of us on our couches to hear trash talk and cursing on the floor. Truthfully, in part because of some fake crowd noise, music being piped in during gameplay and copious bleeping from the TNT censors, there hasnt been much of that. But a fan can hope!

Not the expected comeback game for what was described as a potential preview of the Western Conference finals, with a third quarter bogged down by turnovers and fouls. The Clippers stole the lead by 1 point after a slow first half, starting the final quarter 77-76.

Anthony Davis, consistently leading in game points, goes into the fourth with 32 points.

LeBron James hasnt had an assist since the first quarter, simply tallying 7 rebounds, just ahead of Clippers guard Reggie Jackson, who has 6.

The Lakers have rallied, but can they hold on?

LeBron James is just 4-of-16 for 12 points with 5 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. Anthony Davis (32) and Kyle Kuzma (16) have been critical for the Lakers in the second half.

With a minute left, the Clippers Paul George tied up the game only to have LeBron James first miss a shot, then snag a rebound to secure the 103-101 win for the Lakers.

But the conversation has been more about social justice than the down-to-the-wire games.

The game of basketball has always been bigger than the ball and the rim, James told TNT after the game.

James earned himself a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, also leading the game in assists at 7.

George got hot from the field in the fourth to lead the Clippers with 30 points. Kawhi Leonard had 28. Clippers guard Pat Beverley locked in 8 points in the last quarter, but the Clippers were still unable to overcome the Lakers Anthony Davis, who stole the game, pouring in 34 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists.

Aside from making billions of dollars and (hopefully) living on Mars one day, Musks primary occupation seems to be infuriating people up on Twitter.

A prime example of this happened in back May when Musk tweeted the cryptic message take the red pill.

Musks tweet caused huge backlash, including from Matrix director Lily Wachowski, who replied in a colourful way...

Why was this such a big deal?

On a basic level, taking the red pill (or the blue pill, for the matter) is a reference to the moment in The Matrix when Neo must choose between swallowing the hard truth in the form of the red pill, or take the blue pill and remain in a state of blissful ignorance. (Spoiler: he takes the red pill)

The concept of 'taking the red pill' has struck a chord with everyone from leftists to "men's rights" activists.

But the meme is well known for its association with the alt-right.

To the group of hardcore conservatives who primarily communicate via websites like 4chan and Reddit, being "redpilled" in means rejecting previously held leftist social ideals and accepting a world view which is heavily socially conservative. To some, taking the red pill means accepting white supremacy, while to others it means realising that they live in a world that favours women over men.

There is no single definition of what being redpilled means, even amongst the alt-right. For instance, whilst it has been linked to racist ideologies, American conservative Candace Owens runs a YouTube channel called Red Pill Black, where she espouses conservatism for African-Americans.

So was Musk's tweet an endorsement of the alt-right, Republicans or Trump?

People certainly seemed to take it that way at the time. Grimess mother (a Canadian journalist) called him out on Twitter, and Trumps daughter Ivanka gleefully accepted what she perceived as an endorsement.

But now Musk has confirmed that his red pill tweet was not an endorsement of Trump or any political agenda.

In an interview with the New York Times, Musk said that he did not have a political message behind the tweet:

No, its just: Accept reality as it is as opposed to what you wish it were.

On Ivankas quote-tweet, he said:

I think she was interpreting it through more of a political lens then it was intended.

This will no doubt be a blow for Trump, who has been complimentary of Musk, even describing him as one of our great geniuses. Musk sat on business advisory councils for Trump early in his administration but left once he removed America from the Paris climate agreement.

Musk tends to change his mind a fair bit when it comes to politics. Last week he threw his support behind Kanye West's bizarre campaign, before appearing to backtrack after West made several anti-abortion and anti-vaxx comments.

Anyway, Trump has until November to secure Musk's vote, so there's still time for an actual Twitter endorsement. And if 2020's shown us anything, it's to expect the unexpected.

Rock from Mars heads home after 600,000 year odyssey across space – The Guardian

A small piece of rock will be hurled into space this week on one of the strangest interplanetary voyages ever attempted. A tiny piece of Martian basalt the size of a 10p coin will be launched on board a US robot probe on Thursday and propelled towards the red planet on a seven-month journey to its home world.

This extraordinary odyssey, the interplanetary equivalent of sending coals to Newcastle, will form a key part of Nasas forthcoming Mars 2020 expedition. Space engineers say the rock which has been donated by the Natural History Museum in London will be used to calibrate detectors on board the robot rover Perseverance after it lands and begins its search for signs of past life on the planet.

When you turn on instruments and begin to tune them up before using them for research, you calibrate them on materials that are going to be like the unknown substances you are about to study. So what better for studying rocks on Mars than a lump that originated there? said Professor Caroline Smith, the Natural History Museums principal curator of meteorites.

Scientists were confident that the rock they were returning to Mars originated on the planet, added Smith, who is also a member of the Mars 2020 science team. Tiny bubbles of gas trapped inside that meteorite have exactly the same composition as the atmosphere of Mars, so we know our rock came from there.

It is thought that the Martian meteorite was created when an asteroid or comet plunged into the planet about 600,000 to 700,000 years ago, spraying debris into space. One of those pieces of rubble swept across the solar system and eventually crashed on to Earth. That meteorite now known as SAU 008 was discovered in Oman in 1999 and has been in the care of the Natural History Museum since then.

Among the instruments fitted to the Perseverance rover is a high-precision laser called Sherloc, which will be used to decipher the chemical composition of rocks and determine if they might contain organic materials that indicate life once existed or still exists on Mars. The inclusion of a piece of SAU 008 is intended to ensure this is done with maximum accuracy.

The piece of rock we are sending was specifically chosen because it is the right material in terms of chemistry, but also it is a very tough rock, added Smith. Some of the Martian meteorites we have are very fragile. This meteorite is as tough as old boots.

Once Perseverance has selected the most promising rocks it can find, it will dump them in caches on the Martian surface. These will then be retrieved by subsequent robot missions and blasted into space towards Earth for analysis.

This article was amended on 27 July 2020 because the headline of an earlier version was incorrect to refer to the meteorite heading home to Mars after 600,000 years on Earth. That was the approximate length of its journey to Earth. It was also amended to note Caroline Smiths role as principal curator of meteorites at the Natural History Museum.

Each Monday I pick out the northern hemispheres celestial highlights (mid-northern latitudes) for the week ahead, but be sure to check my main feed for more in-depth articles on stargazing, astronomy and eclipses.

As it fades, turn your attentions to for Mars. Its called the red planet for a reasonsee it rising this week in the east a few hours after dark and it will look a ruddy color as NASA launches its Mars 2020 mission,

Meanwhile, Jupiter and Saturn will shine brightly this week while the Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks.

The Moon will be getting bigger and brighter all this week as its waxes towards full, so its worth concentrating on planets, not stars.

The gas giants, Jupiter and Saturn, are shining brightly right after dark. You just cannot miss them in the southeastern sky, where theyre shining at their brightest of the year relatively close to each other.

Mars, on the other hand, you have to work a little harder for. It rises after midnight in the east. Even with the naked eye you should be able to make out its red color.

Happening from July 12 through August 23, the Delta Aquariid meteor shower peaks in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.

Expect about 20 shooting stars per hour after midnight as Earth busts into debris from a comets tail. In reality, only a few will be visible, but its still a good excuse to get outside and look up.

The Delta Aquariids are known for being slow-moving, and having a not-so-important peak, so you can look out for them a few dayseven weekseither side of tonight, too.

Today is the day that NASAs Mars 2020 mission to the red planetis scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force StationSpace Launch Complex 41. If successfully launched its Perseverance rover will land in Jezero crater on Mars on February 18, 2021.

It will leave Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket between 9:15-11:15 a.m. EDT.

Look east right before sunrise and you may be able to spot the red spot of tiny planet Mercury close to Pollux in Gemini. Super-bright planet Venus will be unmissable above.

Later in the day a 97% waxing gibbous Moonjust before its full phase on Mondaywill be close to, or even between, Saturn and Jupiter.

Today its the ringed planet that will be visited by a 99.5%-lit Moon, which will get to within 2.3 as it passes Saturn.

Next up is Augusts full Moon, the Sturgeon Moon or Corn Moon, on Monday, August 3, 2020.
