Prudhoe mum with terminal cancer marries long-term partner after being given months to live – Chronicle Live

A Prudhoe mum with terminal cancer has got married to her long-term partner after being given months to live.

Allison Kelly began suffering from a shortness of breath and a cough with doctors putting them down to being post coronavirus symptoms.

But just two months later she was struggling to breath and was admitted into hospital where she was found to have 4.6 litres of fluid in her left lung.

A biopsy revealed the 55-year-old had mesothelioma - a type of cancer that mainly affects the lining of the lungs - and was given just six to eight months left to live.

The devastating diagnosis prompted Allison's partner of 27 years, Alan Wright, 58, to pop the question.

And within a matter of weeks the couple tied the knot at Hexham House in front of their daughter and bridesmaid Sophie, 17, and Allison's mum and stepdad.

Allison said: "It was after I left the hospital when Alan said 'come on, let's get married'.

"There was no engagement and it all had to be done very quickly. We needed to get married before I started any treatment so I was well enough to enjoy the day.

"It was all done very simply. I had a very old suit on that was given to me by a mum in an antenatal class years ago.

"Alan had an old suit on. It was a very moving service and Alan walked me down the aisle due to the coronavirus restrictions.

"But it was perfect. It was very special day filled with a lot of laughter."

Allison's diagnosis came just 25 years since she beat breast cancer at the age of 29.

It is not the first time cancer has hit her family.

A gene fault has meant she has lost her dad and two sisters to the disease while her half-sister was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.

The archery champion is expected to discover next week if she is eligible to participate in a trial of a drug which is hoped to manage the symptoms of the cancer.

The happy couple had pictures taken in the picturesque gardens of Hexham House before returning to their Prudhoe home where they celebrated into the night.

Allison said: "We had afternoon tea and champagne and it was such a laugh. It makes everything complete. It was so special.

"I'm just really happy. I don't worry about what is going to happen because I don't want to waste my energy on something I can't control.

"It's been hard for Alan and Sophie. We've got to make the most of the time we have left as a family."

Allison admits to being overwhelmed by the generosity of people for helping to make her wedding day so special.

A JustGiving page raised more than 7,400 in total which helped towards the cost while an army of volunteers have completely overhauled the family's back garden free of charge.

She said: "It's been incredible seeing the amount of support we've received from everyone. It has all made a huge difference to my life. Thank you doesn't even feel adequate.

"It has all been such a help, especially during the time when Alan and Sophie were trying to come to terms with everything. We have been very lucky and we're incredibly grateful to everyone."

Hurricane Isaias Rakes the Bahamas on a Track for Floridas East Coast – The New York Times

MIAMI A hurricane warning was issued for parts of Floridas Atlantic coast on Friday, hours after Hurricane Isaias raked the Bahamas, parts of Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

The National Hurricane Center issued the warning for over 150 miles of the Florida coastline, stretching from Boca Raton to the northern bound of Brevard County, according to an advisory on Friday afternoon. Hurricane warnings are still in effect for portions of the Bahamas through Saturday.

Hurricane watches, tropical storm warnings, a storm surge watch and a tropical storm watch are in effect for other parts of Floridas east coast.

The center forecast that the storm would near southeast Florida Saturday afternoon and through Sunday, and then travel north up the states eastern coast late Sunday. Isaias threatened strong winds, heavy rainfall and high storm surges late this weekend.

Isaias, a Category 1 hurricane, is expected to continue to strengthen Friday night and early Saturday and remain a hurricane for the next few days, but it is not forecast to strengthen to a Category 2, said Dennis Feltgen, a meteorologist and spokesman for the National Hurricane Center.

The storm, already the ninth named system of the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season, approached the Bahamas from the southeast on Friday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles per hour. Strong squalls and possible storm surges, forecast between three to five feet, threatened the islands, according to the center.

The potential storm surges were on top of astronomical tides, the centers director, Ken Graham, said on Friday. He described Isaias as a very large storm, with tropical force winds stretching out as far as 180 miles from the hurricanes center.

Its not just a point, its not just a track, its a very large area, he said.

Across the central Bahamas on Friday, conditions gradually deteriorated as the storm barreled across new ground. The threat from Isaias to the Bahamas comes less than a year after Hurricane Dorian ravaged Abaco and Grand Bahama, leaving residents in those areas especially unnerved. Many survivors of Dorian, who saw homes, schools, banks and whole communities crushed to rubble, are still living in tents and unrepaired homes.

The storm hit the Bahamas as it is grappling with a rapid increase in the number of coronavirus infections that has only accelerated in recent days, in what health officials are calling a second wave.

On Thursday night, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced the temporary relaxation of restrictions to give people more time to prepare for the storm. While there are formal hurricane shelters on Grand Bahama, it was unclear how officials would ensure social distancing in them.

In an interview with The Nassau Guardian, Melissa McPhee, 44, said her Grand Bahama home was protected only by a tarp on her roof, after having sustained significant flood and wind damage during Dorian. But she said that she had nowhere else to go.

Ms. McPhee said that, as someone with an underlying condition, she was at a high risk for complications from Covid-19. She was afraid to venture out to prepare for Isaias, she said, and felt that she could not chance staying in a crowded hurricane shelter.

Florida has also been grappling with a surge in coronavirus cases. There were more than 461,000 cases statewide and more than 6,500 deaths as of Friday since the beginning of the pandemic, according to a New York Times database. Friday was the third consecutive day that Florida set its record for the most deaths reported in a single day.

Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a news conference on Friday that Florida was fully prepared for this and any future storm during this hurricane season. He said that the division of emergency management had been working at its most active level since March, allowing them to actively plan for hurricane season even while responding to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr. DeSantis added that early on, the division had created a protective equipment reserve for hurricane season, including 20 million masks, 22 million gloves and 1.6 million face shields.

This week, the states division of emergency management announced that state-sponsored coronavirus testing sites in 11 counties would remain open, but that others would close at 5 p.m. Thursday until it was safe to reopen.

At news conferences on Friday, the Miami-Dade and Broward County mayors said coronavirus testing sites would be closed until next week.

Meteorologists have forecast a busy Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, raising fears among emergency managers about how to handle a potential major hurricane landing during the pandemic. Evacuation orders typically call people into the close quarters of emergency shelters, or to crowded distribution centers.

Last week, Hurricane Hanna hit part of Texas as a Category 1 storm, landing near some of the cities and counties that have seen a sudden spike in Covid-19 cases and hospitalizations. San Antonio officials handed out hotel room vouchers for people who fled their homes, and the mayor of Corpus Christi urged people to wear masks at home if they took in relatives.

The average hurricane season usually produces 12 named storms, including three that develop into major hurricanes. This year, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted an above normal season in the Atlantic, with as many as 19 named storms. Up to 10 of those storms could become hurricanes, and as many as six of those could develop into Category 3, 4 or 5 hurricanes.

Rachel Knowles Scott contributed reporting from Nassau, the Bahamas, and Christina Morales from Hialeah, Fla.

New tropical threat for Caribbean and Bahamas, heat wave continues for East Coast – ABC News

All eyes this morning are on the new tropical wave in the Atlantic moving towards the northern Caribbean islands for the end of the week.

The National Hurricane Center has given a 90% chance in the next few days for this system to become a Tropical Depression or Tropical Storm Isaias.

The storm will move near Puerto Rico by the end of the week and bring the island heavy rain, gusty winds and a threat for flash flooding.

After that, the models take the system into the Bahamas over the weekend and somewhere off the Southeast U.S. coast sometime early next week.

For now, the majority of the models keep the system away just east of the U.S. mainland.

A heat wave will continue for the East Coast with a Heat Advisory issued for 12 states from South Carolina all the way up to Maine.

Already yesterday, several records have been tied and broken from Maine down to North Carolina.

Some of the records include Wilmington, Pennsylvania hitting 100 degrees, Hartford, Connecticut at 98 and Providence, Rhode Island, tying a record at 97 degrees.

Elsewhere, Binghamton, New York, hit a record high of 97 degrees yesterday making this the hottest temperature there in 4 years.

In Washington D.C., there were 25 days of 90 degrees of higher this month so far which ties for the most 90s ever recorded in the month of July. The area is expected to reach the 90s today as well and, if it does, it will officially break that record.

Today, more heat and some humidity will make it feel like its near 100 degrees from Boston to Raleigh.

There will be a cool front that will try to pass through the Northeast in the next 24 to 48 hours but not much relief is expected to come from it.

More 90 degree temperatures are forecast for the next three days for most of the major Northeast cities too.

Everything you need to know if you have plans to travel to the Bahamas – MSN Money

Marianna Massey/Getty Images After reopening borders to international travelers, the Bahamas has implemented a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Marianna Massey/Getty Images

The Bahamas are home to 700 islands, some of the world's best beaches, delicious seafood, and deep turquoise water. Each year, millions of visitors travel to the country to explore its tropical atmosphere.

Like many other places, the Bahamas' tourism sector has been devastated by the coronavirus, and the country has been trying to figure out how to welcome back visitors without putting the health of its citizens at risk.

The Bahama's government thought it had made the right decision when it started welcoming international visitors on July 1, but after three weeks of being reopened, the country experienced a surge in coronavirus cases.

At the time of writing, the Bahamas has had 382 coronavirus cases and 11 confirmed deaths, according to the Johns Hopkins COVID-19 tracker.

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced on July 19 that borders would be closed to US visitors, but that decision was quickly reversed. US tourists will now be allowed into the country, but not without stipulations.

The biggest change is a mandatory 14-day quarantine for incoming travelers, which was first reported by The Nassau Guardian.

The quarantine will take place in a government facility at the visitor's own expense, according to the government's emergency order. Once the 14 days are over, the traveler will be tested for COVID-19 at their own expense.

This also means that incoming visitors will not be asked to bring a negative coronavirus test upon arrival, which was a previous requirement when entering the Bahamas.

The reasoning for the change was to create a "uniform stand of treatment for all visitors," according to a statement released by Attorney General Carl Bethel.

Additionally, international travel into or out of Grand Bahama, which is the Bahama's northernmost island, is prohibited.

The only way to get around the 14-day quarantine is if incoming visitors arrive via a private or chartered aircraft.

The government has placed a curfew on the island from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. every day.

Beyond remaining 6 feet apart and wearing masks in public spaces, tourists will also find many attractions closed. Casinos, bars, clubs, theaters, and museums remain closed, while restaurants, hotels, gyms, spas, and tourist attractions are operating at limited capacities.

A 19-page outline of what incoming visitors should expect can be found on The Office of the Prime Minister's website.

Travelers are itching to explore and get out of the house. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends avoiding all nonessential international travel during this time.

Consider exploring a nearby city or an unfamiliar state. Domestic travel across the US has been on the rise, and the tourism industry has witnessed an increased interest in road trips, RV rentals, and domestic trips.

For those determined to get on a plane, there are around 30 countries welcoming US visitors. However, travelers should do research beforehand to understand what policies are in place, as countries have a wide range of reopening plans and different requirements from incoming visitors.

Hurricane Isaias continues to bring strong winds, heavy rains to Bahamas, heading to Florida’s east coast next – positivelyosceola.com

As of Saturday mornings 5 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Isaias was about 80 miles south-southeast of the Bahamas, and was continuing to churn northwest at about 12 mph, a bit of a slowdown from late Friday night, as it begins its track toward Floridas east coast.

Isaias is experiencing a bit of wind shear which is keeping its growth controlled a bit. The track has also shifted slightly east since the last NHC update at 11pm Friday night, which is a good thing for the Osceola County area, and the east coast of the state.

After pulling away from the northwestern Bahamas later Saturday, Isaias is expected to skirt the east coast of the Florida peninsula beginning with the southeast coast Saturday afternoon through Sunday, according the National Hurricane Center.

Sunday afternoon around 2pm should be the closest Isaias is the Osceola County.

A tropical storm warning has been issued for Osceola County as 39-73mph sustained winds from Isaias are expected within the eastern portions of the county within the next 36 hours.

Take the time today to examine your hurricane supplies and also remove any loose debris that might be around your home. Also safely examine your gutters and nearby sewer drains in preparation for potential heavy amounts of rain.

Bermudamanaged, through intervention, to reduce its murder count in 2019 to zero.

Those that have properly got to grips with crime(Bermuda and Glasgow are great examples) have brought crime down in a sustainedway. They however have found that is a 10-year programme. The National SecurityPermanent Secretary is pulling together, for the Premier, the programmatic disciplinesthis approach needs, said the Governor on Monday.

Ninety percent of murders are recorded in Providenciales, which is the economic hub of the country; yet the Governor was resolute that for tourists, the islands are safe.

As we unpack and understand the figures, this therefore remains an incredibly safe tourist destination; but thats certainly not the case if you are a young man living in Providenciales who is running with the wrong people.

According to Magnetic Media records, there were 13 homicides in 2019 and 12 people murdered so far, in 2020.

Letter to editor: ‘Cancel Culture’ at work in this county – The Herald Bulletin

I read Kelly Hawes' column on July 25, and I have to agree. Today's "Cancel Culture" goes too far. And our country suffers for it.

And then I thought: We have a perfect example of it here in Madison County. Rodney Cummings' forcing the court to "cancel" out Jaime Hudson's job by political maneuvering instead of proper legal and job-law channels is a textbook example of the "Cancel Culture" at work. Almost every aspect of this debacle is on full display for all to see. Little thought is given to the concepts of truth, logic, second chances, or even compassion. Everything given to political expediency, bowing to political correctness, and election-year manipulation.

How incredibly sad all around. It also goes against the concepts of due process, freedom of speech, innocent unless proven guilty, tolerance of others' opinions, equal protection under the law, and several other American and Christian principles.

And what is really sad, is that all of this could have been avoided. This is Indiana, a so-called "Right to Work" state. Both Mr. Cummings and Judge Norrick, being Republicans, are fully aware of this. In Indiana, anyone may be fired from their job at any time, without advanced notice or hearing, for any reason deemed necessary, except for those listed qualities of the federally protected classes. This "union busting" set of laws ensures that anyone can be fired for almost any reason, including no reason at all.

What happened instead does make for dramatic political theater, though.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Weary of people’s ignorance of history – Scottsbluff Star Herald

To the Editor:

As a born Wyomingite and an 82-year-old mostly Apache, I am weary of peoples ignorance of history, placing todays social mores on yesterday, political correctness and snowflake mentality and just plain destroying the first amendment.

Where did the name Redskins derive? From native warriors. Red was the most prominent color for warpaint. Many times bodies were painted completely red for war with smaller overlaying designs that had meaning for each individual Red Color Symbolizes war, blood, strength, energy, power and success in war but if not paint for war it would also symbolize happiness and beauty in face paint

Because of the predominance of red paint for war the first Europeans who arrived called native peoples Redskins. If that is racist then so is Red Coats which everyone white, black and red called British soldiers because of their red uniforms. I am amazed at the ignorance of history and lack of personal pride todays young American Indians have so they think it an insult to choose names like chiefs, redskins, braves etc. for team mascot names. Those names are chosen out of respect and admiration of native peoples character such as; Bravery, tenacity, fortitude, courage, boldness, strength, valor, patience, endurance, daring, perseverance and just plain guts to keep fighting-on no matter the odds to preserve their way of life. If teams didnt want a mascot to admire they would choose names such as caterpillars, snails, slugs, worms, maggots or cockroaches.

We don’t need to worry about ‘racist’ teachers! – The Conservative Woman

THERE are many areas of failure within our school system. Teaching quality is variable and academic standards are well below those in the best educational systems around the world. In addition, pupil behaviour is often poor and parental support inadequate.

Teacher training is inclined to regard schooling as being more about therapy than about the acquisition of subject knowledge. Too often its main focus is on political correctness. As a consequence, many schools have succumbed, sometimes unconsciously, to a philosophical outlook that is narrow-minded and dogmatic. Strangulation of alternative views and open discussion has become the norm. Closing down debate and the promotion of ignorance is applauded, however inadvertently.

When, indeed, it comes to the enforcement of political correctness, the UK sits alongside the United States as world-beating. I know from parents who write to me that teachers are even telling pupils that answers to exam questions must be not only correct, they must be politically correct.

Above all else, within todays moral quagmire, schools have embraced an anti-racist creed. Treat others as you wish to be treated, the non-negotiable requirement that as a headteacher I used to impose on pupils, is no longer enough. Far from it! Teachers now have to play the role of thought-police in the classroom.

That racial bullying has been a problem in some schools appears clear. It should be unequivocally condemned, as should all bullying. The pendulum of prejudice, however, is now moving in the opposite direction. The new racism is anti-racism. Aberrant opinion that fails to classify all blacks as victims is distinctly off-message and, consequently, punishable. The enthusiasm amongst young people for moral crusading and for metaphorical self-flagellation over the sins of the past is evidence of successful brainwashing in schools and universities. The herd instinct of supposedly well-educated young people has rarely been stronger or more intolerant.

It comes as a surprise, then, to learn that the BBC feels the need to tell us that schools have a statutory duty not to discriminate against pupils over race.Schools may be saturated in anti-racism but it seems they are not saturated enough. Black pupils, the BBC reports, are disproportionately hit with fixed-term exclusions in England by three times as many in some places, data shows.

The data has been highlighted by Lib-Dem education spokesman Layla Moran. It is a glaring injustice, she told the BBC, that black pupils growing up across the country are so much more likely to be excluded from school than their peers.

TheGuardianputs it all down to hair. The UK school system has a problem with afro-textured hair, its readers are informed by Emma Dabiri, academic, broadcaster and author of Dont Touch My Hair.

It turns out, though, that the exclusion rate for black children is trumped by those from a Roma/gypsy background.Mihai Calin Bica of the Roma Support Group toldtheIndependentthat he thought more cultural awareness in schools could support these pupils. Schools need to better engage with Roma communities, he said.

And, would you believe it, the official data on which pupil exclusion rates are based, has a different category for the group topping the exclusion table. Children on free school meals, including blacks and Roma, are four times more likely to be excluded than their classmates.

So it is back to a predominance of less well-off, white working-class pupils who are mostly excluded from school.

Calls for schools to become more accommodating of different cultural backgrounds should not be ignored but in practice it could lead to severe fractures in the school community. One rule for the blacks and one rule for the Roma, one rule for the well-off whites and one rule for the poor whites. And what about the LBGT community in schools and those of different faiths and so on and so on?

I have long been critical of what goes on in schools but the current suggestion that school leaders are insufficiently anti-racist is absurd. It is the very opposite of the truth. Schools may be failing in many areas but, to a fault, the teaching profession does not fail the anti-racist test.

NJ Legislature voted on over 100 bills today. Here are the ones you should know about – NorthJersey.com

From rules governing pets at restaurants to bills concerning mortgage relief and the removal of Confederate statues, New Jersey lawmakers votedon a long list of proposals on Thursday.

The bills have to be passed by the Senate and Assembly, both of whichconvened in Trenton, and signed by Gov. Phil Murphy before becoming law. There's also a slew of bills that would reform policing and criminal justice practices. Here's a separate look at what happened with those measures.

Here are the notable bills they considered:

If Murphy signs S-19, New Jersey will have a new official state holiday: Juneteenth, or the day enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free on June 19, 1865, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the Civil War ended. The third Friday in June would be a paid holiday for state government workers, adding to New Jerseys 13 public holidays. The Assembly passed the measure 62-0, with 12 lawmakers abstaining, to send the bill to Murphy's desk.

Both chambers passeda measure (S-855/A-3594) to change the title of county-level public leaders from freeholders to county commissioners. No state other than New Jersey uses the term freeholder, which is rooted in an old English term to describe someone who owns land free of debt. At the time, few women and Black people owned property, giving white men the political power.

This is not a matter of political correctness; it is a corrective action to replace an outdated designation that is rooted in institutional prejudice, Murphy, Sweeney and Coughlin said in a joint statement supporting the change. The Senate passed the bill 31-6, and the Assembly 61-12.

The Assembly passed a resolution (AR-178)urging the U.S. Congress to pass a bill to remove statues of Confederate leaders from the U.S. Capitol. The vote was54-1 with 17 abstentions.Assemblyman Brian Bergen, R-Morris,was the sole no vote.

Last week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to remove statues, such as the bust of Confederate Secretary of War John Cabell Breckinridge.

Those who committed treason against the United States, and led the nation into its most painful and bloody war to preserve the institution of slavery, are not patriots and should not be afforded the honor of having their images on display in the United States Capitol, the New Jersey resolution reads. The state Senate did not vote on the resolution.

Renters who are financially hurt by the pandemic could not be evicted, penalized or fined for not paying rent during a public health emergency or 60 days after, if they qualify for relief under A-4034.

And for homeowners andcertain residential landlords who qualify, creditors would be required to let them delay mortgage payments through the 60-day grace period.

The catch-up payments would be added on to the end of a mortgage, not tacked on all at once when the public emergency is over, and landlords would have to agree to an affordable rental repayment plan with tenants.

Reader covering our local communities takes time and resources. Help us better support your community by becoming a subscriber today ="left"> see our special offers.

The Assembly passed the bill with a 46-22 vote Thursday, and the Senate passed an earlier version in April with a 38-0 vote. The bill would retroactively apply to missed mortgage and rent payments starting March 9.

I applauded the governor back in March when he announced a freeze on evictions and foreclosures and a mortgage forbearance, said Joe Mangino, board president of the New Jersey Organizing Project. I reached out to my bank and realized the fine print banks were being asked to defer the forbearance payment to the end of the loan. This was voluntary and there was no mandate ... my mortgage company is expecting a lump-sum payment to bring my mortgage current. We need to give homeowners and renters a fighting chance to survive.

Just as the coronavirus pulled the state budget into turmoil to the tune of nearly $10 billion, local governments have seen a drop in revenues, and some have warned that employee layoffs are necessary to balance the books. One bill, S-2475, would give local governments the authority to borrow money by issuing bonds if other revenue streams like federal and state cash aid have dried up. Bonds would be repaid by property tax revenues, according to a summary of the bill. The last-resort borrowing must be done within two years of the end of the public health emergency, which is still in effect. The Senate passed the legislation with a vote of 25-15. The Assembly passed a similar version of this bill in May.

State officials are making contact tracing the practice of informing people they may have come into contact with someone exposed to the virus a central part of the reopening plan, and lawmakers want to make sure information gathered during the process remains protected. Assembly bill A-4170 would require public health entities or third parties to limit use of personal data to contact tracing only, and delete the information or any parts of it that can identify an individual within 90 days. A violation, if the bill becomes law, could warrant a $10,000 penalty. The Assembly passed the bill 55-18. The Senate has not voted on it.

Short-term and vacation rental services like Airbnb would be required to provide refunds or credits to people who had planned to visit New Jersey during the coronavirus pandemic but who canceled their trips. Senate bill S-2412 would require that refunds be offered for trips between March, when the virus first hit New Jersey, and the end ofSeptember, ifthey were booked by July 1. The Senate passed the bill 32-5. The Assembly has not voted on the bill.

Both the Senate and Assembly passed resolutions (SCR-123/ACR-188) that would put a question on the November ballotasking voters whether delayed 2020 census results should also delay the state's redistricting process. The census's population counts are used to redraw lines for the districts that state Senators and Assembly members are elected to represent. The Assembly passed the resolution with a vote of 51-26 andthe Senate voted 25-15, both clearing the required three-fifths threshold.

Census officials have cited the coronavirus and said results won't be delivered to states on time. If the results arrive after Feb. 15, 2021, and New Jersey voters approve this change, redistricting would be delayed and new maps would not be used until 2023.

Critics of the change say delaying redistricting would cut out the voices of minority communities whose population has grown since the last census, in 2010.

"Indeed, the interests of Black and brown communities in New Jersey who confront some of the worst racial disparities in the country and who are now facing the worst of this pandemic must be prioritized," Henal Patel, director of the democracy and justice program at the New Jersey Institute for Social Justice, said during testimony against the bill this month. Patel spoke on behalf of a group of advocates, activists and academics called the United Black Agenda.

Republicans have also blasted the plan that Senate Democrats, including sponsor Sen. Nicholas Scutari, D-Union, have said is necessary to ensure that new election districts are accurate.

"This is being done in the middle of a pandemic," Senate Republican Leader Thomas Kean Jr.,of Union County, said in a statement. "Stakeholders and communities of interest who will be impacted the most will have little opportunity to engage in a debate over such an important constitutional change."

Both chambers passed a bill (S-2676/A-4389) to impose an annual 2.5% state tax on net premiums of most health insurers, which is expected to raise $900 million starting in 2021. The tax would flow to a health insurance affordability fund, which would subsidize premiums for those who buy their own health insurance and the states reinsurance pool that helps companies pay large claims.

The bill would also require a report examining how the policy affects racial disparities in health insurance coverage, and recommendations on how to increase affordable health care options and reduce the uninsured rate.

Murphy, an advocate for the bill, said the tax will replace a federal levy that sunsets at the end of this year. Business and insurance representatives opposed to the bill argue that employers would see their premiums increase, as insurers pass on the cost of the tax. As small businesses struggle with the economic recession brought on by the pandemic, the timing is not ideal, they argue.

The Assembly passed the bill 43-0, and the Senate 22-16.

NJ education: More in New Jersey contemplating all-remote education as first day of school approaches

'Can Igetout of here before I die?': Virus slows, but did NJ do enough to keep inmates safe?

Pet dogs would be allowed in outdoor dining areas under a bill the Senate passed 39-0. S-766 addresses a gray area between health regulations and state law and says yes, you can take your dog to dine with you outside. (It also puts into law measures to prevent contamination of food and utensils should animals go inside.) Libby the French bulldog, rejoice!

What to call the 20%? | Jesus Creed | A Blog by Scot Mcknight – ChristianityToday.com

This is a fact: some 80% of white evangelical Christians (who voted) voted for Donald J. Trump. This too is a fact: he not only is not one of them but he flaunts Christianitys essential teachings and behaviors, and evangelicals both supported him in record numbers and have not criticized him (though it appears to me the tide is turning).

In Kristin Kobes De Mezs paradigm-influencing study of American evangelicalism, Jesus and John Wayne, the question of How did evangelicals support Trump?, is the driving question. The whole books expounds a thick cultural narrative of the decisive dimension of that culture that approved Trump.

Why Trump?, many wondered, including many evangelicals themselves. For decades, the Religious Right had been kindling fear in the hearts of American Christians. It was a tried-and-true recipe for their own success. Communism, secular humanism, feminism, multilateralism, Islamic terrorism, and the erosion of religious freedom- evangelical leaders had rallied support by mobilizing followers to fight battles on which, the fate of the nation, and their own families, seemed to hinge. Leaders of the Religious Right had been amping up their rhetoric over the course of the Obama administration. The first African American president, the sea change in LGBTQ rights, the apparent erosion of religious freedom - coupled with looming demographic changes and the declining religious loyalty of their own children - heightened the sense of dread among white evangelicals.

Evangelicals were looking for a protector, an aggressive, heroic, manly man, someone who wasnt restrained by political correctness or feminine virtues, someone who would break the rules for the right cause.

Why? How could a movement shaped by biblical faith come so uniformly to terms with Trump? Her answer to this question calls into question the integrity of cultural evangelicalism.

Were they fake evangelicals while true evangelicals did not support him? (no) Was about an economic motivation, that Trump would stimulate the economy? (no) Was it about status in society that could be restored? (in part) Was it pragmatic so that many held their noses? (no) Was it the promise to appoint the right kind of justices to the Supreme Court? (in part) Was it hypocritical to vote for a person who is character challenged? (yes) [SMcK: I think more space cold be given to never a Democrat for a significant reason.]

Du Mezs theory is soundly argued on the basis of a cultural history of evangelicalism that establishes that evangelicalism the four major lanes anyway is a cultural movement and not just a theological movement. If the theologians want to define evangelicalism with four or five major tenets, that is but the express lane. The majority of the lanes are populated by cultural evangelicals. Culture evangelicalism supported Trump. She claims more: Trump was all but inevitable as a magnet for evangelicals.

What attracted them to Trump was nothing less that the formation of a militant masculine Christianity.

Evangelicals hadnt betrayed their values. Donald Trump was the culmination of their half century-long pursuit of a militant Christian masculinity. He was the reincarnation of John Wayne, sitting tall in the saddle, a man who wasnt afraid to resort to violence to bring order, who protected those deemed worthy of protection, who wouldnt let political correctness get in the way of saying what had to be said or the norms of democratic society keep him from doing what needed to be done. Unencumbered by traditional Christian virtue, he was a warrior in the tradition (if not the actual physical form) of Mel Gibsons William Wallace. He was a hero for God-and-country Christians in the line of Barry Goldwater, Ronald Reagan, and Oliver North, one suited for Duck Dynasty Americans and American Christians. He was the latest and greatest high priest of the evangelical cult of masculinity.

Such a view worked back into reshaping Jesus himself. A warrior, militant, mans man Jesus was created in the process. A John Wayne Jesus, and Du Mez surfaces dozens of connections evangelical leaders have made in the last half century to John Wayne (Who knew!).

This Jesus was over half a century in the making. Inspired by images of heroic white manhood, evangelicals had fashioned a savior who would lead them into the battles of their own choosing. The new, rugged Christ transformed Christian manhood, and Christianity itself.

Weaving together intimate family matters, domestic politics, and a foreign policy agenda, militant masculinity came to reside at the heart of a larger evangelical identity.

From the start, evangelical masculinity has been both personal and political. In learning how to be Christian men, evangelicals also learned how to think about sex, guns, war, borders, Muslims, immigrants, the military, foreign policy, and the nation itself.

Evangelicalism must be seen as a cultural and political movement rather than as a community defined chiefly by its theology.

Image: Cover Photo

Du Mezs very readable page-turner (for me) was laced together and buttoned down with sketches of the principal people involved in creating cultural evangelicalism, one that is nothing short of Christian nationalism.

I will give the names who shaped masculine, militant Christian nationalism, each in his or her own way:

Billy Sunday, John Ockenga, Billy Graham, Stuart Hamblen, Bob Well, Explo 72, Jack Hyles, Marabel Morgan, Elisabeth Elliot, Phyllis Schlafly, Bill Gothard, James Dobson x 5, Tim LaHaye, Beverly LaHaye, Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan, Oliver North, Edwin Louis Cole, D. James Kennedy, Pat Robertson, Charles Colson, Rush Limbaugh and Bill OReilly, Bill McCartney, Gary Oliver, Tony Evans, Gordon Dalbey, Steve Farrar, Stu Weber, John Piper, Wayne Grudem, Paige Patterson, Josh Harris, John Eldredge, Douglas Wilson (through Piper), David Murrow, Doug Phillips, the Duggars, Mark Driscoll, D.A. Carson, Tim Keller, Ted Haggard, Franklin Graham, Ergun Caner, William Boykin, Eric Metaxas, Duck Dynastys Robertson family, Donald Trump, Robert Jeffress, Jerry Falwell Jr, Al Mohler, Russell Moore, C.J. Mahaney, and others

These are the folks Du Mez brings forward as the influencers in shaping cultural evangelicalism.

And John Wayne.

Let’s be blunt about it: Russ Diamond is a jerk – The Times of Chester County

By Mike McGann, Editor The Times @mikemcgannpa

There are good people (lots, actually) and then well, and unfortunately theres no better way to put it some people are reprehensible jerks (and yes, I wanted to use a more succinct expletive, but it seemed immature).

One of the biggest in Pennsylvania is a State Representative from Lebanon County, Russ Diamond.

After State Health Secretary Rachel Levine, who is transgender, put out a statement this condemning those harassing her and others in LGBTQ community, Diamond put out a juvenile parody defending those people who refuse to wear masks.

Levine has been targeted with such abuse repeatedly by small-brained opponents as part of their temper tantrums about Gov. Tom Wolfs pandemic management.

While I have, at times disagreed with some of Levines decisions and her communications strategy and said so in this space the majority of her decisions have proven sound. By lowering themselves to such petty, thoughtless and discriminatory comments, some of Levines intolerant GOP critics, have shown themselves to be ignorant, transphobic twits. As Levine points out, these public comments can be hurtful to the greater LGBTQ community, especially young people, which was the point of her comments this week.

But in a hold my beer moment, Diamond decided to both mock those comments and dispute the need to wear a mask during a pandemic that has literally killed more than 150,000 Americans. I wont quote his missive, released on Wednesday, because frankly, it is so juvenile and pathetic that it does not deserve inadvertent amplification.

Gov. Wolf replied on social media, Thursday: Virtually no thinking person disputes mask-wearing as an effective means to stop the spread of COVID-19.

Proud non-mask-wearers such as Rep. Diamond are not displaying their freedom, but rather their ignorance and lack of respect for themselves and others.

Pretty much sums it up.

People who refuse to wear masks are selfish jerks.

Period.

They dont deserve special consideration or praise they deserve wide condemnation and shunning. They are willing to make people sick and die to prove some wrongheaded, ignorant, non-scientific argument.

Fortunately, the vast majority of Pennsylvanians get it new polling out this week shows large majorities supporting masks and the limited closures to fight COVID-19. Most people get it: wear a mask, keep socially distant and wash your hands. Avoid indoor gatherings, indoor bars and restaurants. No one likes it, but it is what responsible adults do to fight a pandemic.

Diamonds missive represents conduct unbecoming a state legislator.

Although I dont have confidence in the voters of Lebanon County, one would hope they would see this embarrassment and make a change.

In the near term, I would stress how important for your safety it is to avoid visiting or conducting business in Lebanon County as its county government and local leaders do not take COVID-19 seriously. By visiting, you put yourself and your family at risk by having any interaction with its businesses and citizens who in the main ignore science and pander to people like Diamond. I wish it wasnt true, but you need to protect yourself.

Republicans are spending a lot of time and effort to brand the Democrats as the party of #defundthepolice.

While there are arguments to redirect some police funding away from things like tanks toward community policing, Democrats have yet to take a single dollar away from police unlike their Republican colleagues.

Yup, its true.

By failing to offer funding to states and municipalities hard hit by the tax impact of COVID-19, Republicans in Congress are effectively cutting funding to police. And firefighters. And teachers.

As states like Pennsylvania which saw a $3.2 billion shortfall in the last fiscal year, ending June 30 are looking at fiscal holes across the budget. Its hard to imagine that the State Police which is the only police in much of Chester County wont see budget cuts and manpower reductions. The same is true for the larger communities in the county with their own police departments, especially those that depend on Earned Income Taxes they cant spend money they dont have.

If maintaining police funding were a priority, Republicans in Congress would have pushed for aid to states and municipalities. Instead, they oppose it. By their actions, the GOP is supporting police cuts.

You may want to ask them to explain that.

***

As a resident of Pennsylvania, you get to vote by mail, which in this year of the pandemic, is a really important thing.

Despite claims by President Donald Trump, mail-in voting fraud is extremely rare (rarer than that of in-person fraud, which is also rare). He and his GOP pals are lying because they know a big voter turnout will doom them.

Between bungling the COVID19 response and the subsequent destruction of the economy, Republicans deserve to get wrecked at the polls thats how democracy works. Do a lousy job, lose it. But Trump who floated the non-starter idea of delaying the election wants to find a way to cheat the system, again.

Dont fall for it. Mail-in voting is safe and has worked effectively since the 1860s.

Click here to request your mail in ballot. When you get it, make sure you mail it in well in advance of election day, as postal service is being intentionally slowed (how corporate America, which depends heavily on the U.S. Mail, is putting up with this mystifies me). Allow at least 10 days, if not more, for your vote to reach Voter Services.

You may or may not depending on the outcome of a lawsuit brought by Trump and Republicans also be able to drop your ballot off at Voter Services in Westtown. Dont assume you will be able to do so get your ballot as early as possible and return it as early as possible. Well keep you updated on the status of the drop boxes.

In a directly related matter, The Inquirer is reporting mail delays of up to two weeks thanks to the cost cutting moves of new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy (a major Trump fundraiser).

Just a reminder, the USPS is only losing money because Congress forced it to set aside pension funds for 75 years literally for employees who are not yet born something no other federal agency is required to do. The USPS uses no taxpayer money and operates entirely on its own revenue but it is now struggling financially because of these burdens (it would be profitable, otherwise).

So now, DeJoy ordered all sorts of cuts, slowdowns and such to save money. Coincidently, it will make voting by mail harder during a pandemic. Why this isnt being challenged in court it would seem to violate Federal law regarding slowing the mails is beyond me.

You may want to reach out to your U.S. Senator, Pat Toomey (U.S. Senator Bob Casey, Jr. and U.S. Rep. Chrissy Houlahan are aware and fighting against it already) to see why your mail isnt showing up and why hes not doing anything about it.

Designer Handbag Restoration Before And After Pictures And Videos – GLAMOUR UK

If you're anything like us - and the majority of fashion lovers - then you likely have a slight soft spot for designer bags. Sure, beautiful high-end dresses, sweaters and coats have their appeal, but nothing quite compares to the thrill of finally snapping up that bag you've had your eye on for months. Not least because you can wear it every single day without so much as a glance at the washing machine.

But there is a downside to their wearability. If you've got a bag that you love and use endlessly, chances are that it looks a little worn out after a while.

You can be super careful and even put it in the dust bag every night, but even the most cautious amongst us can spill a coffee, brush up against a dirty wall or, well, live in a smog-filled city with dirty pollution tarnishing your beloved bag every time you take it outside.

But far from a lost cause, the possibility (probability) of putting your beloved bag through a little wear and tear is no reason to avoid using it, or you may as well have never bought it in the first place. Instead, it's wise to learn about restoration options.

Cheaper, more sustainable and perhaps even more satisfying than buying a replacement, the world of upcycling has made major strides over recent years, with Handbag Clinic providing some of the most impressive restorations.

"The loudest noise in fashion right now is the sustainability movement" acknowledges the brand, "and the last year has seen something of an awakening for the fashion industry at large as well as consumers."

"Sustainability has graduated from peripheral issue to central concern of the cultural zeitgeist. The more recent emphasis has been on the circular movement, which is concerned with the entire lifecycle of a product which must be considered at the design and sourcing stage."

"For consumers, circularity means not putting an end to the things they use."

Whether its spillages, tears, or merely general signs of wear, Handbag Clinic's before and after images not only showcase the level of transformation that can be achieved, but are also strangely addictive whether or not you have a bag that needs restoring.

And don't get us started on the videos - Are they the most captivating things you've ever seen or do we need to get out more? We're blaming the ASMR...

We heard you liked Parasite, so weve got a lot seriously, a LOT of films to recommend by British auteur Ken Loach, starting with Sorry We Missed You (Kino Lorber Zeitgeist). Hes been digging deep into the class war for years now (hes on the side of the poor, by the way; sorry, billionaires) and his movies champion the dignity and communal power of people struggling to get by in a capitalist system designed to crush them. Sorry We Missed You is both furious and exceptionally relevant right now, telling the story of a family hanging by a thread as both parents work in precarious jobs that could disintegrate with the slightest hiccup. Then come the hiccups. Let it radicalize you.

Also available: Brian Cox stars as an independent man with Parkinsons who gets The Carer (Corinth), a caretaker he didnt ask for but who just might change his life; The Other Lamb (IFC Midnight) tells the chilling tale of a young woman who rebels against the cult she was born into; and Queen of Hip-Hop Soul Mary J. Blige stars as the only cop on the force who can see the supernatural entity wreaking havoc in the creepy Body Cam (Paramount).

New Foreign

Sometimes escapism is about watching someone else make their own literal escape. Chinese import The Wild Goose Lake (Film Movement), unfortunately timed for what turned out to be a truncated arthouse rollout earlier this year, is an elegant, suspenseful thriller from filmmaker Diao Yinan. Its about a small-time gangster on the run with a price on his head and a suspicious femme fatale along for the ride. The follow up to his breakthrough film Black Coal, Thin Ice, its an inventively shot, stylishly violent trip into deep dark noir.

Also available: Samurai Marathon (Well Go USA) has director Bernard Rose (Candyman) taking a feudal lord challenging a samurai to a punishing marathon and then adding a dizzying Philip Glass score to ramp up the action; 19thcentury Germans struggle against poverty and oppression in Home From Home: Chronicle of a Vision (Corinth), a four hour black-and-white arthouse odyssey; the Romanian New Wave gets an injection of sunshine, crime, and sexiness with Corneliu Porumboius stylish Cannes hit The Whistlers (Magnolia Home Entertainment).

Acclaimed filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho (Aquarius, Neighboring Sounds) joins forces with JulianoDornelles for the staggering Bacurau (Kino Lorber), a wild revenge tale about a rural Brazilian village thats mad as hell and not going take it anymore, starring Sonia Braga and featuring Udo Kier; The Prince (Artsploitation Films) is a downcast but still homoerotic Chilean prison drama that won Venice Film Festivals Queer Lion Award in 2019.

New Doc

Is Paul Verhoevens 1995 box office fiasco Showgirls a masterpiece? Or is it shit? Or is it a masterpiece of shit? This is the question explored in You Dont Nomi (RLJE), a provocative and utterly entertaining new documentary from director Jeffrey McHale. A wildly divergent variety of opinions and critical voices compete for the truth, and all of it is mixed with footage from the source material, vintage interviews, and corroborating evidence from Verhoeven films before and after Showgirls. You Dont Nomi takes a every stance about Showgirls all at once its feminist, its queer, its garbage, its brilliant, its camp, its an evisceration of everything hideous and banal about American life, its all of the above and makes you decide for yourself whos right. Just remember, its pronounced Ver-SAYSE.

Also available: Hands of God (Film Movement) chronicles the agonizing journey of the Iraqi Olympic Boxing Team when their gym is blown up; in 1985,Philadelphia police dropped a military-grade explosive on a residential building occupied by the Black liberation group MOVE, killing 5 children and 6 adults, and that shameful bit of U.S. history is explored in Target: Philadelphia (Indiepix Films).

HandMade Films, the George Harrisonbacked production company that gave us modern classics like Brazil and Withnail & I, is the subject of An Accidental Studio (RLJE Films), featuring interviews with Terry Gilliam, Neil Jordan, Michael Palin, Richard E. Grant and more; gerrymandering is one of the reasons American politics is currently such a nightmare, and Slay the Dragon (Magnolia Home Entertainment) explains what it is and how we can fight against it.

The Ballad of Genesis and Lady Jaye (Kino Lorber/Adopt), from Marie Losier, details the last stages in the lives of Throbbing Gristle founder Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and performance artist Lady Jaye, as their love story grew to involve intense physical transformations; Joseph Hillels City Dreamers (First Run Features) chronicles a quartet of influential mid-century female architects who forever changed the concept of urban living; the subject of female ejaculation gets overdue attention in Sacred Water (Icarus Films), when radio host and sex educator Dusabe Vestine goes on a mission in Rwanda to promote womens sexual pleasure.

New Grindhouse

Enter the Fat Dragon (Well Go USA Entertainment) is a remake of Sammo Hungs 1978 martial arts comedy classic, which was itself a parody of Bruce Lees 1972 film, The Way of the Dragon, which makes this update a meta-reboot-tribute-spoof. Donnie Yen stars this time as a police officer whose reassignment to the evidence room and a concurrent love of snack cakes makes him into a more plush version of himself. Does this stop him from fighting crime and using his martial-arts skills to regulate all the bad guys? It does not, which is something of an achievement in the cinematic representation of fat dudes existing and successfully delivering kicks to the throat. Its always better to tell the joke rather than to be the joke.

Also available:Have you seen The Room (Shudder/RLJE)? No, not that one, the one about people stuck in a Room. No, not that one, either. This is a horror film about a room that turns your wishes into trouble, and its got a title designed to confuse; little baby demons make the Vatican unhappy in Belzebuth (Shudder/RLJE), starring Saws Tobin Bell.

Kiss of the Vampire: Collectors Edition (Scream Factory) serves up classic 60s Hammer horror and all the lurid color-story that implies; in Inferno of Torture (Arrow), Japanese exploitation master Teruo Ishii (Horrors of Malformed Men, Orgies of Edo) sees to it that lots of young women are tattooed and tortured in the sixth film in his Abnormal Love series.

Indonesias most well-known comic book superhero, named Gundala (Well Go USA), goes up against a disfigured mob boss and his band of deadly orphan assassins; filmmaker Dietrich de Velsa, who later collaborated with Joseph Losey on Mr. Klein, directed exactly one movie: Equation to an Unknown (Altered Innocence), and its a masterpiece of downbeat French, queer erotic cinema. If you know, you know.

New Classic

Legendary producer Arthur Freed meets legendary choreographer Busby Berkeley (the guy who invented immaculate and elaborate musical production numbers that were shot overhead for maximum wow) meets legendary singer Judy Garland and her most enduring screen partner Mickey Rooney in Strike Up the Band (Warner Archive), a wild romp about high-school kids determined to make it big in the world of music. Spoiler: They succeed. Watch the big Conga number for a taste of what kind of taskmaster Buzz Berkeley was with his exhausted-yet-smiling-through-it-all young stars. Pairs well with another new-to-Blu Mickey and Judy hit, Girl Crazy (also Warner Archive).

Also available: Eco-thriller The Day the Earth Caught Fire (KL Studio Classics) is an eerily prescient 1961 British doomsday shocker, the godfather of all 70s disaster films, from director Val Guest; Go Go Mania aka Pop Gear (KL Studio Classics) is another 60s Brit artifact, a splashy concert affair with The Animals, Hermans Hermits, The Spencer Davis Group, and, oh, The Beatles.

Airplane! (Paramount Presents) is 40 years old, and heres the Blu-ray. Now you feel old, too; same goes for Clueless (Paramount) celebrating its own 25thanniversary with a loaded-up Blu-ray. Yes, the 90s are that far away. Deal with it.

Even older is the 1936 Buck Jones: The Phantom Rider (VCI) cowboy serials, restored and compiled on one very lengthy Blu-ray; meanwhile W.C. Fields 1941 Never Give a Sucker an Even Break (KL Studio Classics), the comedy legends last starring role, also gets the Blu-ray treatment; pre-code cult classic The Sin of Nora Moran gets revived from the folks at The Film Detective; andMdchen in Uniform (Kino Classics), a landmark in the history of lesbian cinema released back in 1931, remains powerful enough to stay relevant almost 90 years later. And if you really want to fire up the wayback machine, theres a new Blu-ray of the very first submarine feature ever made, the 1916 silent 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (Kino Classics). (If youre only aware of the later Disney adaptation of the Jules Verne novel, note that the remakes star, Kirk Douglas, was born in 1916.)

Kino Classics presents three new Blu-rays spotlighting the work of director Istvan Szabo: Mephisto won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language film of 1981 for the story of an actor in World War II whose career benefits from Nazi rule; Oscar nominee Colonel Redl stars Klaus Maria Brandauer as a counter-intelligence expert whose secret gayness threatens to compromise his safety; and Confidence, another Best Foreign Film nominee, spins a love story between two Resistance fighters, each married to someone else, in the waning days of WWII.

Whoopi Goldberg won her own Academy Award for Ghost (Paramount Presents) now celebrating its 30th anniversary the monstrously popular supernatural drama where Patrick Swayze is the ghost of a murdered man who has to save lover Demi Moore from the same fate. Whoopi helps.

Thirteen Ghosts: Collectors Edition (Scream Factory) is the 2001 remake you never knew you needed, starring Matthew Lillard, Shannon Elizabeth, Rah Digga, and F. Murray Abraham; Pride and Prejudice (Warner Archive), another story that enjoys regular remakes, delivered a classic version with Greer Garson and Laurence Olivier; Esther Williams does all the elaborate swimming in the sparkly treat Million Dollar Mermaid (Warner Archive); and long before Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn wrote the 2000 cult comedy The Specials (La La Land Entertainment), which introduces the sixth-greatest superhero team in the world including Thomas Haden Church, Judy Greer, and Rob Lowe none of whom are million-dollar mermaids, alas.

Among the more sober offerings this month are Lorenzos Oil (KL Studio Classics), an exceptionally moving true story starring Nick Nolte and Susan Sarandon as parents who fought to find a cure for their childs mysterious and fatal illness; Keith Gordons acclaimed 1992 drama A Midnight Clear (Shout Select) depicts an attempted surrender during World War II that goes terribly wrong, featuring a stunning ensemble that includes Ethan Hawke, Gary Sinise, Arye Gross, Kevin Dillon, and Frank Whaley; and legendary filmmaker Luchino Viscontis last feature, the 1976 historical drama LInnocente (Film Movement), starring Giancarlo Giannini, Laura Antonelli, and Jennifer ONeill, finally gets a Blu-ray release.

New TV

Stephen Kings domestic creepshow The Outsider (HBO) begins with what appears to be an open-and-shut case of child murder. Theres a suspect. Theres camera footage. And yet theres also an ironclad alibi, and quite possibly a supernatural boogeyman at work. Simultaneously chilling and heartbreaking, its a miniseries about what happens when a town is torn apart by forces beyond its control, and how people go on living in the midst of rampant, inexplicable death. In other words, its about the United States. Cheers!

Also available: James Camerons Story of Science Fiction (AMC/RLJE) is a miniseries that wrangles the heavy hitters of sci-fi, including Steven Spielberg and George Lucas, to talk about their bodies of work;Castle Rock: The Complete Second Season (Warner Bros Home Entertainment) features Miserys Annie Wilkes (Lizzie Caplan) as she gets stuck in Castle Rock while an epic feud between warring families is underway.

For completists: Hawaii Five-O: The Final Season (Paramount) brings the hit reboot to a close; Murdoch Mysteries: Season 13 (Acorn/ITV) is here to refill your cozy mystery cup; and one of the shows that first taught audiences how to stream comes to a climax with Orange Is the New Black: The Final Season (Lionsgate).

The Birth of Ultraman (Mill Creek Entertainment) gathers seven classic episodes from the original series, as well as the very rarely seen Birth of Ultraman, a live stage show that aired on Japanese television in July of 1966 one week before the premiere of the original series; shot in black-and-white, it was the introduction of the character and has never been released in the US until now.

Letter: Homeless deserve chance to rebuild lives | Letters – Herald and News

The narrow mindedness and hypocrisy I have seen in Lakeview about this homeless housing project is shameful. Now I've noticed there are a majority who claim to be God-fearing Christians.

Doesn't it say in Matthew 7:12, "Do unto others as you would have them do to you?" What this means is Put yourself in their shoes. Picture ourselves as our fellow humans and recognize the sovereignty and emotions of each individual. That is our golden rule.

Now who are we to judge others, when in reality we don't know how they ended up in the situation they're in or what happened to them that lead to them being the person they are now? All I know is our past mistakes and our faults do not define who we are.

Some of these homeless people are actually people who just needed a little help and were afraid to reach out and ask for it, for fear of being judged by hypocrites. And yes, I know that's not every homeless persons story. But did you know in homeless housing there is: 1) No tolerance policy on drinking and drug use 2) Strict curfew 3) Must have a job or show proof you've been looking 4) Requirement to take prescribed medications, do daily chores and maintain a good standing in their community.

These types of housing are used to help get people back on their feet. Would you rather have our homeless population continue to take shelter in your garage, your shed, or potentially your home? Or would you prefer a supervised drug free environment where they're getting the help they need and the tools to becoming self sufficient again? I'd prefer the choice that helps them help themselves.

Wear mask for others safety

This is a free country and I have a constitutional right to wear or not wear whatever I want! This is a refrain I have heard on many occasions recently. So, what does our Constitution say about mandatory wearing of masks?

The Preamble to our Constitution states: We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union, ESTABLISH JUSTICE, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the GENERAL WELFARE , do ordain and establish this Constitution (Emphasis mine).

Two comments about the Preamble: first, it states that the purpose of the Constitution is to promote the general welfare of all citizens of the United States. Since it is now scientifically and medically demonstrated that wearing a mask is, indeed, part of protecting everyone from the spread of the COVID-19 virus, mandating the wearing of a mask by everyone is promoting the general welfare of all the citizens. So, if citizens are not interested in voluntarily wearing a mask to protect others, then it is within the right of our governments (national, state, and local) to require masks to be worn.

Secondly, wearing masks protects others from getting sick, so requiring masks to be worn is part of establishing justice. Requiring masks is just and right because many of us do not want to be exposed to the possibility of being infected and dying from the sickness. Claiming a right to not wear what protects others from sickness is not justice for those who do not want to be exposed to sickness and possible death.

Our Constitution does, indeed, support the government in requiring that which will help ensure or promote safety and justice for everyone.

However, we might wish that all citizens would want to live by the Golden Rule: In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets (Matthew 7:12). I will wear a mask to protect others, and I hope you will, too.
