Here is why Bitcoin might Reach a New All-Time High – InvestingCube

Bitcoin (BTCUSD) may have been late to the party compared with gold prices and the Nasdaq 100, but its price reached a new 2020-high last week. In fact, the price managed to breach a multi-year triangle pattern, with an objective of $20,220, so the bulls had a lot to cheer. Having said that, as with many things in life, great rewards do come with significant risks, and the market experienced this on Sunday morning when Bitcoins price dropped by about 12.5% in a relatively short period of time.

Moreover, Bitcoin Cash (BCHUSD), an improved version of the original Bitcoin, dropped by 28%. Late investors must have choked on their morning coffee, as the decrease happened rather quickly, with a majority of losses happening within just ten minutes.

Yet as quickly as the price fell it recuperated about 50% of its drop, so higher prices despite the shakeout are likely.

The price triggered a breakout from a rectangle pattern. We create this pattern by drawing a trend line via the all-time high of $19632, the 2019-high, and the June 2020 high of $10,522. We can also draw an upward sloping trend line via the March 2017 and December 2018 lows, and the March 16, 2020 low.

As we can see in the first chart below, the price remains outside of the triangle, and there is a reasonable chance that the price will pick up in the weeks ahead. A strong push back into the triangle would normally end the pattern swiftly.

Dont miss a beat! Follow us onTelegramandTwitter.

If we wait for a strong correction there is a reasonable chance that investors that are not already long will not get an entry. Instead, I think they will be happy to see a slide to the $10,500 to $11,000 interval. The $10,500 low is a level just below the low from Sunday, as seen in the chart below.

In the short-term chart seen below, one can also argue that a bearish head-and-shoulders pattern may be forming, but given the overall bullish trend, I think this short-term pattern will morph into something different in the days ahead.

If the price does indeed turn higher from the above-mentioned interval, and it will reach the June 2019 high of $13,945, the risk-reward ratio will be 5.29 times the risk. if we reach the pattern target, the risk-reward ratio would mean a result of 16.53 times the risk.

Dispelling the Myth That Bitcoin Proponents Want a Cashless Society | Featured – Bitcoin News

Bitcoin and a great number of other cryptocurrencies are electronic versions of currency. Many people falsely assume that crypto proponents are for a cashless society and this is certainly not the case.

If we removed the central banks printing fiasco and the inflationary practices from cash, we all know that cash is great for anonymity and fungibility. But the nation-states and central banking cabal are in charge of the fiat game and the monetary system today does come with serious manipulation and inflation.

Most crypto supporters, just because they support an electronic currency, do not support the removal of cash money. But there is little anyone can do to stop the government from going cashless.

Now we all know that cash is great (besides the inflationary aspects), but we also know that cryptocurrencies are even better. Crypto transactions like bitcoin (BTC) do not have to be electronic every time someone transacts.

With cryptos like bitcoin, we can create all kinds of bearer bond instruments. A digital asset can be hidden in mnemonic phrase and most seeds are based on 12, 18, or 24-word phrases that are tied to their private key(s).

The use of mnemonics, or memoria technica, is derived from the era of the ancient Greeks when Aristotle and Plato philosophized about certain types of logic. The photo below is a depiction of the Knuckle mnemonic, which represents the number of days in each month of the Gregorian Calendar.

Any amount of crypto, like a billion dollars worth of crypto assets, for instance, can be stored in a mnemonic.

This means you can keep a billion dollars hidden in a book, or even by memory if you have a decent photographic memory. Bitcoin can be printed on paper, metal, plastic, and people can create all types of cash instruments.

Now just like gold, a bundle of cash can be quite cumbersome to carry. You cannot travel lightly with a billion dollars worth of cash in a few bags. You also have to be vigilant, protective, and someone can take your bundles of cash like a mugger or even law enforcement. For instance, the U.S. agency Homeland Security seized $2 billion in cash from travelers during the course of six years at U.S. airports.

But think about what I just said. You can store any amount of money on a piece of paper. On a small square of aluminum. You can write down 12-words on a piece of paper and hand a family member tens of thousands of dollars no questions asked.

No need for the duffle bags of loot, you can simply leverage a mnemonic or a piece of paper.

Hiding crypto is extremely easy and someone can even do it by leveraging steganographic tools. Literally hiding a million dollars in plain sight. Steganography is the art of concealing images, messages, files, or videos. The practice of obscuring messages in this fashion was first recorded in 440 BC.

So in many ways, cryptocurrencies are an advanced form of cash and you are just not aware of all the possibilities if you think crypto people are anti-cash. This is simply not true.

To a great degree, digital currencies are simply a better form of money and many people just havent figured that out yet. And thats ok we have plenty of time to teach and they have plenty of time to listen. But its simply not true that crypto advocates are helping the global elite create a cashless society. Digital currency supporters can create all kinds of free market-based cash instruments with ease.

What do you think about the fact that cryptocurrency supporters can easily create bearer bond instruments? Let us know in the comments below.

The Crypto Daily The Movers and Shakers July 30th, 2020 – Yahoo Finance

Bitcoin, BTC to USD, rose by 1.70% on Wednesday. Reversing a 1.02% fall from Tuesday, Bitcoin ended the day at $11,117.

It was another mixed start to the day. Bitcoin fell to an early morning intraday low $10,851 before making a move.

Steering clear of the first major support level at $10,594, Bitcoin rallied to a late intraday high $11,355.

Bitcoin broke through the first major resistance level at $11,267 before easing back to sub-$11,200 levels.

The late pullback saw Bitcoin fall back through the first major resistance level at $11,267.

The near-term bullish trend remained intact, supported by the latest move through to $11,000 levels. For the bears, Bitcoin would need to slide through the 62% FIB of $6,400 to form a near-term bearish trend.

Across the rest of the majors, it was a mixed day on Wednesday.

Cardanos ADA slid by 6.46% to lead the way down.

Bitcoin Cash SV (-2.54%), Moneros XMR (-2.76%), and Stellars Lumen (-2.36%) also saw relatively heavy losses.

Binance Coin (-1.53%), Bitcoin Cash ABC (-1.06%), Litecoin (-1.20%), Tezos (-1.88%) and Trons TRX (-0.12%) saw more modest losses on the day.

It was a bullish day for the rest of the majors, however.

Ripples XRP rallied by 5.57% to lead the way.

EOS (+0.79%) and Ethereum (+0.20%) also found support.

In the current week, the crypto total market cap rose from a Monday low $285.49bn to a Monday high $335.81bn. At the time of writing, the total market cap stood at $318.81bn.

Bitcoins dominance rose from a Monday low 62.43% to a Tuesday high 64.57% before easing back. At the time of writing, Bitcoins dominance stood at 64.14.

At the time of writing, Bitcoin was down by 0.35% to $11,077.8. A bearish start to the day saw Bitcoin fall from an early morning high $11,117.4 to a low $11,004.0.

Bitcoin left the major support and resistance levels untested early on.

Elsewhere, it was a mixed start to the day.

At the time of writing, Moneros XMR and Bitcoin Cash SV were up by 1.04% and 0.92% respectively to lead the way.

Binance Coin (+0.05%), Ethereum (+0.16%), and Stellars Lumen (+0.23%) also found early support.

It was a bearish start for the rest of the majors, with Ripples XRP down by 1.10% to lead the way down.

Bitcoin would need to move through the $11,116 pivot to support a run at the first major resistance level at $11,380.

Support from the broader market would be needed, however, for Bitcoin to break out from Wednesdays high $11,355.

Barring an extended crypto rally, the first major resistance level would likely cap any upside.

In the event of a crypto breakout, Bitcoin could eye the second major resistance level at $11,601.

Failure to move through the $11,116 pivot level would bring the first major support level at $10,852 into play.

Barring an extended crypto sell-off, however, Bitcoin should steer clear of sub-$10,800 levels and the second major support level at $10,588.

Hurricane Isaias lashes the Bahamas as it bears down on Florida – TRT World

Hurricane Isaias has lashed the Bahamas as it churns towards Florida, bringing new dangers to a US state suffering record deaths from an unrelenting coronavirus outbreak.

Hurricane Isaias has strengthened slightly as it has lashed the Bahamas, bearing down on Florida.

Isaias was carrying top sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph) and was located about 125 km (80 miles) south-southeast of the Bahamas capital Nassau at 5 am (0900 GMT) heading northwest, the National Hurricane Center said.

Its centre was approaching Andros Island in the Bahamas and was due to pass over or near islands in the central and northwest Bahamas on Saturday, bringing a danger of damaging storm surges of up to 1.52 m (5 feet) over normal tide levels, the NHC said.

Meanwhile, officials in the Bahamas evacuated people on Abaco island, who have been living in temporary structures since Dorian. People living in the eastern end of Grand Bahama were also being moved.

Paula Miller, Mercy Corps director for the Bahamas, told The Associated Press that while the islands can normally withstand strong hurricanes, some have been destabilised by the coronavirus pandemic and the damage caused by Dorian.

With everything not quite shored up, property not secured, home not prepared, even a Category 1 will be enough to set them back, she said.

Two of those islands, Abaco and Grand Bahama, were battered by Dorian, a Category 5 storm that hovered over the area for two days and killed at least 70 people, with more than 280 reported missing. People are still living in tents on both islands, and officials said crews tried to remove leftover debris ahead of Isaias.

Curfew imposed

Prime Minister Hubert Minnis relaxed a coronavirus lockdown as a result of the storm, but imposed a 10 pm to 5 am curfew. He said supermarkets, pharmacies, gas stations and hardware stores would be open as long as weather permitted.

The Bahamas has reported more than 570 confirmed Covid-19 cases and at least 14 deaths. It recently barred travellers from the US following a surge in cases after it reopened to international tourism.

Measures in parts of Florida

The storm, a Category 1 on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale, prompted authorities in parts of Florida to close Covid-19 testing sites and people to stock up on essentials.

Isaias was expected to deliver heavy rains to the state's Atlantic coast beginning late Friday before hitting the eastern Carolinas by early next week, the NHC said.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis established a state of emergency for a dozen counties on the Atlantic coast, which makes it easier to mobilise resources.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper followed suit.

'No need to open shelters' in Miami

Public beaches, parks, marinas and golf courses were closed in Miami-Dade County on Friday.

Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez said on Friday that 20 evacuation centres were on standby that could be set up with Covid-19 safety measures.

We still dont think there is a need to open shelters for this storm, but they are ready, he said.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties also closed drive-through and walk-up testing sites for Covid-19, as the state at the epicentre of the country's outbreak reported a record increase in coronavirus deaths for a fourth day in a row.

DeSantis said testing sites would remain open on Florida's west coast, and testing at hospitals and community centres may also continue.

Flooding and landslides

On Thursday, while still a tropical storm, Isaias toppled trees, destroyed crops and caused widespread flooding and small landslides in the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico, where hundreds of thousands of people were left without power and water.

Officials reported that a man died in the Dominican Republic when he was electrocuted by a fallen electrical cable. More than 5,000 people were evacuated, and more than 130 communities remained cut off by floodwaters.

In Puerto Rico, the National Guard rescued at least 35 people from floodwaters that swept away one woman who remained missing.

Talking the Tropics With Mike: Isaias to roll across the Bahamas through Friday night & near Florida over the – ActionNewsJax.com

There is an alleyway of sorts developing near the U.S. east coast/far W. Atlantic. A more organized Isaias seems to now be sniffing out that alley lending confidence to the more north & east solution in the long run. The approaching upper level trough moving into the Eastern U.S. should help eventually steer Isaias north then northeast. The trough may help with the upper level ventilation of the storm negating some of the effects of potential low level shear while along or near the east coast & Isaias may undergo a period of fairly solid intensification through the weekend/early next week as indicated by some models..... &, therefore, be even stronger - at times - than a Cat. 1 hurricane. However, there may also be some land interaction - especially on the west side of the circulation - over the weekend during the close approach to SE Florida. The GFS model has recently come in stronger as has the operational European & UKMET models & generally agree on a painfully close approach to SE Fl. while turning north then well east of Jacksonville. The GFS remains decidedly faster (by 12+ hours) than either the European or UKMET models. A compromise between all three is the prudent route at this juncture & probably will end up closest to reality.

Hurricane Isaias Moves Through Bahamas as Category 1 Hurricane, Projected to Strike Brevard County on Sunday – SpaceCoastDaily.com

Hurricane Isaias Carrying 80 mph max sustained winds

ABOVE VIDEO: Hurricane Warning issued for Brevard County by the National Hurricane Center. Space Coast Dailys Zach Clark reports on the latest developments.

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA National Hurricane Center is continuing to monitor Category 1 Hurricane Isaias after a Hurricane Warning was issued for Brevard County on Friday.

The system is carrying 80 mph max sustained winds and moving to the northwest at 15 mph. The Category 1 hurricane is expected to slow down forward progress as it moves through the Bahamas early Saturday morning.

Experts project tropical storm-force winds could impact Brevard County as early as Saturday late afternoon around 3 p.m. The main portion of the hurricane will move near or over the Floridas East Coast, including Brevard County, throughout the day on Sunday. The strongest winds will arrive Sunday night around 8 p.m.

National Hurricane Center is expecting Hurricane Isaias to gain strength tonight as it moves off the Bahamas Friday night and early Saturday morning.

Brevard County could be impacted by winds as high as 85 mph.

Isaias is expected to carry storm surge around 2-4 feet for Brevard County, along with the entire east coast of Florida. The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the right of the center, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves.

In addition to storm surge, rainfall amounts is also a concern as Isaias is producing a vast amount rainfall. Brevard County is expected to receive 2-4 inches of rain, which could cause isolated flash flooding, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas.

Finally, Brevard County will begin seeing swells spread along the coast by Saturday afternoon. These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions. Those traveling to the beach on Saturday should adhere to local government warnings regarding dangerous rip currents as Isaias begins to descend on the area.

A local State of Emergency has been declared for Brevard County on Friday in response to the pending threat of Hurricane Isaias.

A local state of emergency is declared in advance of a potential disaster event and enables government entities to readily seek response or recovery assistance from the state.

The emergency declaration will be signed by Brevard County Commission Vice-Chair Rita Pritchett, who is the appointed chair of the Policy Group, which consists of local, county, and state officials and is activated for emergencies.

An emergency declaration provides avenue for counties to expedite contractual procedures, rental of equipment, employment of permanent and temporary workers, acquisition of supplies, materials and facilities and appropriation and expenditure of public funds.

Gov. Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency on Friday.

ABOVE VIDEO: Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey talks about area sandbag locations for citizen pickup.

The Brevard County Sheriffs Office along with the Board of County Commissioners and our Public Safety partners continue to monitor the storm projections of Hurricane Isaias.

As a result of a potential impact to Brevard County, the Sheriffs Office will be distributing sandbags (at no cost) to our citizens, today and Saturday, at five different locations throughout Brevard County.

In an effort to expedite the process, we will be using inmate labor to fill and load the sandbags directly into our citizens vehicles at the five different locations.

This will be conducted under the direct supervision of the Sheriffs Office employees. Each vehicle can obtain up to 10 free sandbags so they can help prepare and protect their homes and businesses.

The five locations will be open for distribution Saturday, beginning at 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. or until supplies are gone.

Red Cross in Bahamas preparing for Hurricane Isaias, while balancing COVID-19 response and Hurricane Dorian recovery – International Federation of Red…

Panama/Port of Spain, 31 July 2020 The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is working alongside the Bahamas Red Cross to prepare for Hurricane Isaias.

A hurricane warning is in effect in the Bahamas with storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rainfall expected on the south eastern islands today and continuing through the weekend.

Effective preparedness and early action in disaster saves lives and livelihoods. The Red Cross is working with communities to ensure they are ready to address possible hurricane conditions during the time of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bahamas Red Cross is working closely with the National Emergency Management Agency supporting plans for preparedness and response, including the opening of shelters. The Bahamas Red Cross is sharing information about how-to be ready for disaster, and the latest information about the storm. Red Cross volunteers have been trained in using personal protection equipment and are ready to mobilize in response to Hurricane Isaias.

The team in the Bahamas is managing three difficult emergencies simultaneously: they are preparing for Hurricane Isaias, addressing and supporting people impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and continuing to help in recovery from Hurricane Dorian, said Ariel Kestens IFRC Head of Country Cluster for the English and Dutch Speaking Caribbean.

The Red Cross is continuing our work, as well as monitoring the situation to determine our ongoing course of action and how to continue to best meet the needs of vulnerable communities during these difficult times.

To mitigate the impacts of a hurricane and associated flooding, the Red Cross has pre-positioned humanitarian relief supplies in key areas throughout the region. Across the Caribbean, Red Cross volunteers are sharing early warning and preparedness messages, and they are urging people to have food, water, and other necessities available, and to consider personal protection measures, such as masks and hand sanitizer for emergency go bags.

Latin America and the Caribbean are disaster-prone regions. The IFRC advocates for climate change adaptation measures to mitigate the humanitarian impact of these disasters.

Grand Bahama residents in 20 communities advised to evacuate – Bahamas Tribune

BY DENISE MAYCOCK

Tribune Freeport Reporter

dmaycock@tribunemedia.net

Grand Bahama residents in 20 communities along the coast and other vulnerable areas are being advised to evacuate, Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Management, and Reconstruction Iram Lewis said on Friday.

This comes as the island - still recovering a devastating blow from Category Five Dorian last year is forecast to experience three to five feet storm surge as the system brushes the island on Saturday.

Given the potential surge, according to Minister Lewis, NEMA is advising the evacuation of communities along coastline, including McLean's Town, Sweeting's Cay, High rock, Dover Sound, Barbary Coast, Lucayan Glen, Forest Green, the Harbour area, Airport Zone, East Airport Zone, Queen's Cove, Lucayan Estates, the Heavy Industrial Area, and coastal areas of Williams Town, Russell Town, Pinder's Point, Bay Shore Road Eight Mile Rock; those on Rolle's Avenue and Quacko Street in Holmes Rock; Deadman's Reef, Bootle Bay, and the entire community of West End.

Also, the official shelter count has been increased from four to eight on Grand Bahama. They are Bishop Michael Eldon High School; Foster B Pestaina Hall (Special Needs); Calvary Temple, Maurice Moore Primary School (East Grand Bahama residents); Calvary Temple; St Georges High School Gym; Eight Mile Rock School; Central Zion Baptist Church; and Bethel Baptist Church.

The Emergency Operation Center has been activated, and Mr Lewis stated that persons in quarantine wishing to evacuate before the storm were able to call the EOC at 351-4902/3 to arrange transportation.

According to the minister, persons in quarantine not allowed to leave their homes were advised to have family members or persons in the public assist them with preparations for the storm.

"We have to abide by COVID-19 regulations, we have to be strict with that and ensure that those persons remain on lockdown, he stressed.

Rand Memorial Hospital Administrator Sharon Williams assured that the hospital is ready and prepared for the storm.

She said the emergency room is only open for emergencies and added that hospital patients are being accommodated at the A&E Section and Sunrise Medical Center. Ms Williams noted that the COVID-19 section at the Cancer Association Building is activated and is used to house COVID-19 patients and suspected cases.

Samaritans Purse tent hospital has been deactivated and is no longer being used to accommodate hospital patients, since April when it was impacted by severe weather.

When asked about visitors on Grand Bahama, Minister of State for Grand Bahama Senator Kwasi Thompson said that the Ministry of Tourism is aware of all visitors on the island.

He said visitors wishing to leave the island can do so by private charter. As long as they have private charter they are allowed to leave, there are no restrictions on non-Bahamians who wish to leave, he added.

Minister Thompson also indicated that the OPM after receiving requests has considered on a case by case basis where hotels are required to open to receive evacuees during the storm.

He stressed that the island is being challenged again.

This is a very challenging time for GB and the entire Bahamas. It is challenging because we are continuing to recover from Dorian, and we see signs of that all over, said Mr Thompson.

We have done tremendous work and people have done tremendous work; and businesses have done tremendous work in recovering from what was the most devastating storm to ever hit this island. We are fighting with COVID-19; and not only are we fighting with COVID-19, but we are also at the center of the fight for COVID in the Bahamas. And now, we are faced with another storm, another hurricane, he said.

I believe we are as best as we can be prepared, given the circumstances we find ourselves in which are not at all ordinary circumstances, the minister said.

In preparation for the storm, residents flooded gas stations, the food stores, and hardware stores which were open until 8pm on Friday.

Grand Bahama Police will be closely monitoring the conditions at Fishing Hole Road.

Supt Doyle Burrows said the Police Command Center has been activated, but warned that no rescues will be carried during the storm. The numbers are 350-3084 or 350-3082.

UltraFlex using induction heaters to preheat Inconel for the aerospace industry – Robotics Tomorrow

] In a recent test application UltraFlex Power Technologies proved the efficiency of using induction heaters in the manufacturing process for aerospace components.

In a recent test application UltraFlex Power Technologies proved the efficiency of using induction heaters in the manufacturing process for aerospace components. UltraFlex is a leading induction heating manufacturer and frequently performs complimentary testing with provided materials from current and potential customers.

An Inconel blade and an UltraFlex 15 kW induction heater from the UltraHeat W series had been used for this induction heating scenario requiring heating at a target temperature of 1832F (1000C)! UltraHeat W are advanced, cost-effective 5 kW to 15 kW Induction Heating systems utilizing the latest switching power supply technology. They feature adaptive digital phase control providing very efficient operation in a wide frequency range. To ensure efficient heating, UltraFlex also designed a custom, C-shaped induction coil with a "channel" profile for the blade and clearance of ~2mm (0.07 inch) between the coil and the blade.

UltraFlex engineers managed to achieve a complete custom solution that concentrated the electromagnetic field and successfully heated the edge of the blade to 1000C (1832F) while the blade was rotating at high RPM. The material passed this heating test successfully, using a precise heating process that had been energy-, time- and cost-efficient. In addition to being resource-efficient, this had also been a completely green process - due to the lack of open flame, there was no smoke or noxious emissions. Last but not least, in this process the operator skills had been removed from the equation completely, which would ensure consistent heating and hence, reliable induction heating results every time.

North Korean hackers target defense and aerospace industry in ‘Operation North Star’ – SiliconANGLE

North Korean hackers are expanding their efforts to break into U.S. defense and aerospace companies in a series of attacks dubbed Operation North Star.

DetailedWednesday byresearchers at McAfee Advanced Threat Research, the operation involves the use of a series of malicious documents containing job postings taken from leading defense contractors.

The documents, which typically contain job descriptions for engineering and project management positions for active defense contracts, are targeted to employees who may be interested in job opportunities. Once the document is opened, malicious code designed to gather data is installed in the background.

The individuals receiving these documents in a targeted spear-phishing campaign were likely to have an interest in the content within these lure documents, as we have observed in previous campaigns, as well as some knowledge or relationship to the defense industry, the researchers said.

The methodology isnt new and similar campaigns have been seen in the past, but the researchers note that the implants and lure documents in this campaign are distinctly different, causing them to conclude that it is a distinct campaign in its own right.

Those behind the attack are using compromised services in Europe, with the domain mireene.com a common denominator in many. The domain name is linked to Hidden Cobra, a name given to various suspected North Korea hacking groups by the U.S. Intelligence Community but most commonly tied to the Lazarus Group.

Lazarus pops up like clockwork at least once a year with new hacking campaigns. In December it was a Linux hacking campaign, while in 2018 the hacking group was targeting banks and bitcoin.

Brandon Hoffman, chief information security officer and head of security strategy at cybersecurity form Netenrich Inc., told SiliconANGLE that Operation North Star has several interesting characteristics.

While reviewing the tactics, techniques and procedures there is no doubt that it is a sophisticated and highly targeted campaign, he said. Breaking down the campaign to its simplest terms, the campaign used phishing techniques, word documents, DLLs and libraries for persistence and is still reliant on command-and-control for objective completion.

Tom Pendergast, chief learning officer at cybersecurity and privacy education firm MediaPRO Holdings LLC noted that too often the point of entry for an attack is an employee. Thats why social engineering attacks especially spear-phishing attacks aimed at a particular kind of person are so often capable of wreaking havoc within a compan, he said. Users at defense and aerospace companies must be especially skeptical of any contact sadly, even to the point of paranoia and have to take steps to verify the legitimacy of contacts.

Singapore aerospace industry set to be hit by more retrenchments, as Covid-19 continues to batter travel demand – Malay Mail

There are more than 130 companies in the aerospace industry here, including Singapore firms such as ST Engineering Aerospace, SIA Engineering Company and Singapore Aerospace Manufacturing. Reuters pic

SINGAPORE, Aug 6 In the past two weeks, two aerospace engineering firms here announced more than a hundred layoffs as part of cost-cutting measures due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Aerospace manufacturer Pratt & Whitney and its majority-owned unit Eagle Services Asia were the latest in a series of companies in the sector to have done so, and experts told TODAY that they are unlikely to be the last, as the coronavirus crisiscontinues to rip the industry apart.

Tan Kong Hwee, executive vice-president of the Economic Development Board (EDB), told TODAY that the aerospace industry employs more than 22,000 people, about 80 per cent of whom are Singapore residents.

The sector has more than 130 companies, includingSingaporefirms such as ST Engineering Aerospace, SIA Engineering Company and Singapore Aerospace Manufacturing, as well as multinational corporations such as Rolls-Royce, GE Aviation and Raytheon Technologies.

These companies undertake maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), as well as manufacturing activities, and are a significant part of the global aerospace value chain, Tan said.

Singapore is one of the worlds leading MRO hubs, responsible for 10 per cent of the global output.

He added that based on preliminary estimates, the aerospace sector accounted for S$13 billion (RM39.87 billion) in total output last year.

The recent spate of retrenchments came after several other multinational corporations announced layoffs in their workforce here.

Rolls-Royce said in May that it axed at least 240 roles in its Singapore office, about 24 per cent of its employee headcount here.

European airline manufacturer Airbus in June said that it had to retrenchabout 15,000 employees across its global workforce, including some workers in Singapore, though it did not reveal how many workers were laid offhere.

In response to TODAYs queries, aspokesperson frommultinational corporation Thales said that some staff members in its avionics business in Singapore have been let go as a last resort, following other cost-cutting measures such as enforced leave plans, furloughs and salary cuts. It declined to reveal the number of employees affected by the retrenchment exercise.

Aerospace industry 'under threat'

Experts told TODAY that it is no surprise that the aerospace industry has been hit, sinceit is closely linked to the beleaguered airlines sector.

Aviation analyst Shukor Yusof of Endau Analytics said that the crippled commercial aviation sector has placed the aerospace industry under threat.

Aerospace is a very complex industry with many players operating in different segments of the supply chain, Shukor said. When the ecosystem is broken as it is now there are bound to be casualties, potentially companies failing or shrinking and the associated job losses.

Agreeing, transport analyst Terence Fan from the Singapore Management University said that while the aerospace sector had tried to put off retrenchments for the first few months, the duration of the crisis is beginning to eat into the industrys resilience.

(If the crisis is) for a few months, most companies can bear with it and bite the bullet, he said. Now, all the industry players realise that the crisis is not going to be just more than three months its going to be nine, 12 months, or even longer.

Fan said that aerospace companies will start to realisethey have to minimise cash burns so that they can weather the storm to the point where the demand comes back on.

So they have to think about how they can do that, and eventually the human resource will be one of the things that they could cut, he added.

Fan said that the aerospace industry here comprises multinational companies based mostly in the United States and Europe. These companies will look to preserve headcounts in their corporate headquarters back home, rather than inplaces they have expanded such as Singapore.

Independent aviation analyst Priveen Raj Naidu said that with all international travel heavily curtailed, Singapores status as the MRO hub for the region may be compromised, becauseit does not have the market for domestic air travel.

Thatwe dont have a local domestic market to fall back on makes it tougher for us to maintain our position Now all slates are clean and the scoreboards are the same, he said.

Last week, Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said that reviving some activities in the aviation sector to preserve Singapores hub status will be his ministrys top priority.

However, experts saidthis does not mean that the future of the aerospace industry will be any less bleak.

There is an ongoing bloodbath in the global aviation market but the Government is astute and is trying hard to ameliorate, cushion the fallout, Mr Shukor said. Unfortunately, the Government can't be expected to save all companies and their employees.

Fan said that for Singapore to function as a regional hub again, the pandemic has to be truly over.

The issue is if the pandemic is not controlled then maybe Singapore may not want to be the hub to link up all these places with this virus floating around.

Tan of EDB agreed that the impact of the crisison the global aerospace industry is severe and expected to last for some time.

Still, he noted that the sector remains an important industry for Singapore and that its long-term prospects are positive.

Tan added that EDBs immediate priority is to work with the National Trades Union Congress, its affiliated unions and relevant government agencies to help affected employees in seeking alternative employment.

What employees say

Employees in the aerospace sector interviewed byTODAYsaid thatthe news of retrenchments in the industry is worrying, but they are confident that their skills are transferable to other sectors.

An employee from a multinational company, who did not want to be named, said that about25 to 30 per cent of employees have been laid off in the firms Singapore branch over two exercises in June and July.

For the firms repair and overhaul division which helps maintain commercial aircraft the 50-year-old employee said that about 35 per cent were retrenched.

The employee, who is in middle management, said that most of his staff members were already expecting these retrenchment exercises to take place, and were understanding when they were given the news.

We already sounded off to them that business is bad, and we also showed them some of the cases (in other companies) of retrenchments that took place We sort of hinted that we are also considering retrenchments.

Another employee, who did not want to be identified and who works in ST Engineering Aerospace as a repair engineer for commercial aircraft, said that although the writing is on the wall for his industry, he believes that he can applyhis skillsinother sectors.

Being in engineering, theres the element of being versatile, so theres definitely some chance to join other industries, the 25-year-old said.

Responding to queries from TODAY, ST Engineering said that the impact on its aerospace sector has been mitigated by its airframe business, which deals with the aircraft body and not components or engines, as well as the conversion of existing passenger aircraft to cargo freighters. TODAY

From Delft to orbit, with Dawn Aerospace – Innovation Origins

Doing up to thousands of spaceflights with just one aircraft: that is the goal for the Mk-II Aurora of Dawn Aerospace, a start-up company located both in Delft, the Netherlands, and in Christchurch, New Zealand. That means we dont need expensive factories to launch satellites, says Jeroen Wink, co-founder, and CEO of Dawn Aerospace. With just a small fleet of spacecraft, we are able to launch satellites daily and worldwide without disrupting the airspace or polluting the oceans.

The next 12 months will see an intensive test flight campaign, the company says in a statement published on the occasion of the launch of the new spacecraft. Dawn Aerospace is in consultation with airports in New Zealand, Europe, and the United States in order to be able to operate worldwide in the future. For the first phase of the test program, the Aurora will be powered by traditional jet engines. Missile-powered flights, including scientific experiments to the edge of space, are planned for 2021.

The Mk-II Aurora is the most recent version of a series of test aircraft with which Dawn Aerospace will launch satellites into space in the future. The Mk-II Aurora is Dawn Aerospaces second rocket-propelled aircraft. The aircraft has the capacity to fly to the edge of space and then fly back to the runway autonomously. After landing, the aircraft only needs to be refuelled and can make a new space flight within a few hours.

The Aurora is a scale model with a modest payload. Although the payload is too small for a so-called second stage, it is sufficient to carry scientific experiments into space. The future Mk-III aircraft is based on the design of the Aurora, but will be a lot bigger. Enough to bring satellites of 50 to 100 kg into orbit around the earth using a second stage.

Traditional rockets can only be launched from special launch locations and require sealing of the local airspace. Dawn Aerospace aims to operate its spacecraft from existing airports under existing aviation regulations and certification.

The operational and logistical challenges surrounding a space flight are almost as great as the technical challenges of the vehicle itself, says Tobias Knop, co-founder, and operations director. So building smaller and cheaper rockets, as many companies try to do, solves only half of the problem.

Earlier this year, Dawn Aerospace signed an agreement with the local administration of the Waitaki district in New Zealand to test flights from Oamaru airport.

Global Aerospace Composites Market 2020-2025 – Government Stimulus Packages for the Aerospace Industry Amid the COVID-19 Crisis is Driving Growth -…

DUBLIN, July 30, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- The "Aerospace Composites Market by Fiber Type (Carbon, Ceramic, Glass), Matrix Type, Application, Manufacturing Process, Aircraft Type (Commercial Aircraft, Business & General Aviation, Civil Helicopter, Military Aircraft), and Region - Global Forecast to 2025" report has been added to ResearchAndMarkets.com's offering.

The global aerospace composites market size is projected to grow from USD 23.8 billion in 2020 to USD 41.4 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 11.7% during the same period.

The aerospace composites offer exceptional properties, such as low weight, stiffness, strength, tenacity, density, thermal & electrical conductivity, fatigue, and corrosion resistance. Owing to these outstanding properties, conventional materials, such as aluminum and steel, are less preferred in high-performance applications such as aircraft interiors and exteriors. However, the global pandemic disease COVID-19 has forced the aerospace component manufacturers to shut down their operations partially, which is expected to decrease the demand for aerospace composites in 2020.

The ceramic fiber composite segment of aerospace composites to be the fastest-growing segment in terms of value.

The aerospace composites in the ceramic fiber composite segment are expected to register faster growth. There is a high demand for ceramic fiber composites for making jet engines from commercial, military, civil, business, and general aviation aircraft. On account of the development of production facilities by major companies and increased investments in R&D, these fiber composites have a significant market share in Europe and North America.

Ceramic matrix composites to be the faster-growing matrix type, in terms of value.

Ceramic matrix composites are reinforced with discontinuous reinforcement, such as particles, whiskers or chopped, fibers, or with continuous fibers. The matrix is used to keep the reinforcing phase in the required orientation, which acts as a load transfer media, and protects the reinforcement from the environment. The ceramic matrix composites offer properties such as high damage tolerance, fracture toughness, and high temperature, wear, and corrosion resistance, which are driving the use of ceramic matrix composites in the aerospace composites market.

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the new aircraft deliveries are expected to reduce in 2020, which will result in reduced less demand for ceramic matrix composites from gas turbine engines, nose caps, and exhaust nozzles applications. The demand is expected to recover after 2020.

The commercial aircraft segment to be the fastest-growing aircraft type, in terms of value, in the aerospace composites market.

The commercial aircraft segment is the fastest-growing aircraft type in terms of value, of the overall aerospace composites market in 2019. There is a high demand for carbon fiber composites in commercial airliners as they enable reduction of weight, increase fuel efficiency, reduce assembly time & maintenance, and improve performance. A large number of commercial airplane deliveries in the single-aisle, widebody, twin-aisle, and regional jet segments are expected to increase the demand for carbon fiber composites during the forecast period. Due to COVID-19, the travel restrictions are affecting negatively, which has resulted in fewer aircraft deliveries and expected to reduce composite demand in 2020.

APAC is projected to be the fastest-growing aerospace composites industry.

APAC is projected to be the fastest-growing aerospace composites market during the forecast period. The region comprises countries, such as Japan, China, and India, having significant potential owing to the presence of established raw material suppliers, product manufacturers, and increasing new aircraft deliveries in the region. There is a high demand for aerospace composites from the aerospace industry in the region. However, COVID-19 has negatively affected the aerospace industry in the APAC region.
