Ethiopians celebrate progress in building dam on Nile River – The Associated Press

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) Ethiopians are celebrating progress in the construction of the countrys dam on the Nile River, which has caused regional controversy over its filling.

In joyful demonstrations urged by posts on social media and apparently endorsed by the government, tens of thousands of residents flooded the streets of the capital Addis Ababa on Sunday afternoon, waving Ethiopias flag and holding up posters. People in cars honked their horns, others whistled, played loud music, and danced in public spaces to mark the occasion. Similar events were held in other cities in Ethiopia.

Ethiopias Deputy Prime Minister, Demeke Mekonnen, called on the public to rally behind the dam and support the completion of its construction.

Today is a date in which we celebrate the beginning of the final chapter in our dams construction, Demeke told scores of people who gathered at a hall in the capital. We want the construction to complete soon and began solving our problems once and for all.

Hashtags like #ItsMyDam, #EthiopiaNileRights and #GERD are also trending among Ethiopian social media users. Ethiopians around the world contributed to the festivities on social media.

Sundays celebration, called One voice for our dam, came after Ethiopian officials announced on July 22 that the first stage of filling the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dams reservoir was achieved due to heavy rains. Officials in the East African nation say they hope the $4.6 billion dam, fully financed by Ethiopia itself, will reach full power generating capacity in 2023.

With 74% of the construction completed, the dam has been contentious for years and raised tensions with neighboring countries.

Ethiopia says the dam will provide electricity to millions of its nearly 110 million citizens and help them out of poverty. The dam should also make Ethiopia a major power exporter. Downstream Egypt, which depends on the Nile River to supply its farmers and booming population of 100 million people with fresh water, asserts that the dam poses an existential threat. Sudan, between the two countries, is also concerned about its access to the Nile waters.

Negotiators have said key questions remain about how much water Ethiopia will release downstream if a multiyear drought occurs and how the countries will resolve any future disputes. Negotiations to resolve the differences have broken down several times, but now appear to be making progress.

Is Kyle Tucker Making Progress? – The Crawfish Boxes

Ted? Or Mister Ed?

Hes been controversial from the start. His enthusiasts called him Ted. You know, after Teddy Ballgame. Others have analyzed his long, unorthodox, pretzely, swing and have thought, No way. This guy will be a big league star when horses talk.

So far, the results are not there. A career OPS of .633, and hes worse this year than last.

His supporters shout: SMALL SAMPLE SIZE. Dont give up on the next Kenny Lofton, Jose Abreu, Curt Schilling, J.D. Martinez, Luis Gonzalez, ( a pretty good analog) like the Astros gave up on these future superstars.

On the other hand, do I need to make a list of the hyped prospects in Astros History that flopped?

On and on and on we go.

A famous New York mayor from more peaceful days use to always ask, Howm I doin? Today we ask, hows Ted doin? But even more importantly, how is the future right field heir apparent adjusting and progressing?

Not too well. And hes not improving. But before I lose his fans in this article let me concede the sample size argument. You cant judge a young player by his first 176 plate appearances. And you cant judge anybody in this weirdo, 2020 season, by 32 plate appearances. His OPS is almost identical to Jose Altuves this year. Why not give up on him too?

OK. But hows he doing?

Lets look at Tuckers traditional statistics for his first three (short) seasons.

2018: 72 PA.... .141 BA.... .235 OBP.... .203 SLG.... .439 OPS.... .176 BABIP

2019: 72 PA.... .269 BA... .319 OBP.... .537 SLG.... .857 OPS.... .326 BABIP

2020: 32 PA.. .200 BA.... .250 OBP... .300 SLG... .550 OPS.... .286 BABIP

Career: 176 PA ..205 BA.. ..273 OBP.. .360 SLG... .633.OPS.... ..252 BABIP

Clearly we see improvement last year from year one and regression this year from last. Again, small sample size reservations apply. Given that, BABIP variations, (luck) seem to explain the season to season variations to a degree. His worst season, the first, had a terribly unlucky batting average on balls in play. Last year, his luck was the reverse, and this season his BABIP is about where it should be, and thus this season is producing better results than his first but worse than last years.

A look at more advanced stats year-to-year show a remarkable consistency in Tuckers batting and no evidence of progress. Actually, his batted ball profile this year looks more like his first season than it does his improved year two.

For example, according to Statcast his exit velocity is 91.1. Thats closer to 2018s 90.7 than to 2019s 92.0. So far in 2020 his XWOBA is actually the lowest of his short career, .273, compared to .334 in 2018 and .350 in 2019. That only ranks in the 27th percentile.

The one part of Tuckers batted ball profile that rates above average is his exit velocity. But critics have always pointed out that this is negated by the fact that most of these batted balls are ground balls hit directly into the radical shifts employed against him, and that his swing makes it nearly impossible for him to adjust.

Although he seemed to make progress in 2019 getting under the ball more, when it comes to pulling grounders into the right side shift, Tucker this year is having his worse season yet.

In 2018 Tucker hit 51.0% of his batted balls into the ground. This year it is 57.1%. His launch angle has dropped to its lowest: 13.5. In 2018 he hit 37.3% of his batted balls to the pull side. This year it is 52.4% His line drive% this year is almost identical to 2018; only 19.0% in 2020, 19.6% in 2018.

The fact that Tucker is hitting to the pull side spells more trouble than ever before. According to Statcast Tucker faced shifts only 36.1% of the time in 2018. This has increased to 83.9% of the time this year. On the few occasions he has not been shifted he has had a great season, hitting .591 WOBA. Unfortunately, hes only hitting .154 into the shift, worse than 2018. He hit an unsustainable .403 into the shift in 2019, which helps explain his high BABIP last year.

It is possible that pitchers are tending to pitch him inside to induce him to hit into the shift.

Heres the pitch heatmap for Tucker in 2020.

Notice the low inside bias.

And heres Tuckers spray heatmap.

Unfortunately, Statcast did not keep these charts on Tucker in 2018 and 2019.

In summary, we saw hopeful improvement in Kyle Tucker in 2019, but in the small sample of 2020 weve seen regression to the disappointing 2018 Tucker.

Obviously, no one in the Astros organization is giving up on Tucker after 32 PAs in this, the strange 2020 season of the Virus. But the small sample size argument becomes less and less tenable with every additional at bat he takes. If he doesnt start distinguishing himself soon from Josh Reddick and Myles Straw, his ABs are going to be coming fewer and more far between with the much anticipated arrival of the Yordan machine.

Microsofts new Flight Simulator is a beautiful work in progress – TechCrunch

For the last two weeks, Ive been flying around the world in a preview of Microsofts new Flight Simulator. Without a doubt, its the most beautiful flight simulator yet, and itll make you want to fly low and slow over your favorite cities because if you pick the right one every street and house will be there in more detail than youve ever seen in a game. Weather effects, day and night cycles, plane models it all looks amazing. You cant start it up and not fawn over the graphics.

But the new Flight Simulator is also still very much a work in progress, too, even just a few weeks before the scheduled launch date on August 18. Its officially still in beta, so theres still time to fix at least some of the issues I list below. Because Microsoft and Asobo Studios, which was responsible for the development of the simulator, are using Microsofts AI tech in Azure to automatically generate much of the scenery based on Microsofts Bing Maps data, youll find a lot of weirdness in the world. There are taxiway lights in the middle of runways, giant hangars and crew buses at small private fields, cars randomly driving across airports, giant trees growing everywhere (while palms often look like giant sticks), bridges that are either under water or big blocks of black over a river and there are a lot of sunken boats, too.

When the system works well, its absolutely amazing. Cities like Barcelona, Berlin, San Francisco, Seattle, New York and others that are rendered using Microsofts photogrammetry method look great including and maybe especially at night.

The rendering engine on my i7-9700K with an Nvidia 2070 Super graphics card never let the frame rate drop under 30 frames per second (which is perfectly fine for a flight simulator) and usually hovered well over 40, all with the graphics setting pushed up to the maximum and with a 2K resolution.

When things dont work, though, the effect is stark because its so obvious. Some cities, like Las Vegas, look like they suffered some kind of catastrophe, as if the city was abandoned and nature took over (which in the case of the Vegas Strip doesnt sound like such a bad thing, to be honest).

Thankfully, all of this is something that Microsoft and Asobo can fix. Theyll just need to adjust their algorithms, and because a lot of the data is streamed, the updates should be virtually automatic. The fact that they havent done so yet is a bit of a surprise.

Chances are youll want to fly over your house the day you get Flight Simulator. If you live in the right city (and the right part of that city), youll likely be lucky and actually see your house with its individual texture. But for some cities, including London, for example, the game only shows standard textures, and while Microsoft does a good job at matching the outlines of buildings in cities where it doesnt do photogrammetry, its odd that London or Amsterdam arent on that list (though London apparently features a couple of wind turbines in the city center now), while Mnster, Germany is.

Once you reach altitude, all of those problems obviously go away (or at least you wont see them). But given the graphics, youll want to spend a lot of time at 2,000 feet or below.

What really struck me in playing the game in its current state is how those graphical inconsistencies set the standard for the rest of the experience. The team says its focus is 100% on making the simulator as realistic as possible, but then the virtual air traffic control often doesnt use standard phraseology, for example, or fails to hand you off to the right departure control when you leave a major airport. The airplane models look great and feel pretty close to real (at least the ones Ive flown myself), but some currently show the wrong airspeed. Some planes use modern glass cockpits with the Garmin 1000 and G3X, but those still feel severely limited.

But let me be clear here. Despite all of this, even in its beta state, Flight Simulator is a technical marvel and it will only get better over time.

Lets walk through the user experience a bit. The install on PC (the Xbox version will come at some point in the future) is a process that downloads a good 90GB so that you can play offline as well. The install process asks you if you are okay with streaming data, too, and that can quickly add up. After reinstalling the game and doing a few flights for screenshots, the game had downloaded about 10GB already it adds up quickly and is something you should be aware of if youre on a metered connection.

Once past the long install, youll be greeted by a menu screen that lets you start a new flight, go for one of the landing challenges or other activities the team has set up (they are really proud of their Courchevel scenery) and go through the games flight training program.

That training section walks you through eight activities that will help you get the basics of flying a Cessna 152. Most take fewer than 10 minutes and youll get a bit of a de-brief after, but Im not sure its enough to keep a novice from getting frustrated quickly (while more advanced players will just skip this section altogether anyway).

I mostly spent my time flying the small general aviation planes in the sim, but if you prefer a Boeing 747 or Airbus 320neo, you get that option, too, as well as some turboprops and business jets. Ill spend some more time with those before the official launch. All of the planes are beautifully detailed inside and out and except for a few bugs, everything works as expected.

To actually start playing, youll head for the world map and choose where you want to start your flight. Whats nice here is that you can pick any spot on your map, not just airports. That makes it easy to start flying over a city, for example. As you zoom into the map, you can see airports and landmarks (where the landmarks are either real sights like Germanys Neuschwanstein Castle or cities that have photogrammetry data). If a town doesnt have photogrammetry data, it will not appear on the map.

As of now, the flight planning features are pretty basic. For visual flights, you can go direct or VOR to VOR, and thats it. For IFR flights, you choose low or high-altitude airways. You cant really adjust any of these, just accept what the simulator gives you. Thats not really how flight planning works (at the very least you would want to take the local weather into account), so it would be nice if you could customize your route a bit more. Microsoft partnered with NavBlue for airspace data, though the built-in maps dont do much with this data and dont even show you the vertical boundaries of the airspace you are in.

Its always hard to compare the plane models and how they react to the real thing. Best I can tell, at least the single-engine Cessnas that Im familiar with mostly handle in the same way I would expect them to in reality. Rudder controls feel a bit overly sensitive by default, but thats relatively easy to adjust. I only played with a HOTAS-style joystick and rudder setup. I wouldnt recommend playing with a mouse and keyboard, but your mileage may vary.

Live traffic works well, but none of the general aviation traffic around my local airports seems to show up, even though Microsoft partner FlightAware shows it.

As for the real/AI traffic in general, the sim does a pretty good job managing that. In the beta, you wont really see the liveries of any real airlines yet at least for the most part I spotted the occasional United plane in the latest builds. Given some of Microsofts own videos, more are coming soon. Except for the built-in models you can fly in the sim, Flight Simulator is still missing a library of other airplane models for AI traffic, though again, I would assume thats in the works, too.

Were three weeks out from launch. I would expect the team to be able to fix many of these issues and well revisit all of them for our final review. My frustration with the current state of the game is that its so often so close to perfect that when it falls short of that, its especially jarring because it yanks you out of the experience.

Dont get me wrong, though, flying in FS2020 is already a great experience. Even when theres no photogrammetry, cities and villages look great once you get over 3,000 feet or so. The weather and cloud simulation in real time beats any add-on for todays flight simulators. Airports still need work, but having cars drive around and flaggers walking around planes that are pushing back help make the world feel more alive. Wind affects the waves on lakes and oceans (and windsocks on airports). This is truly a next-generation flight simulator.

Microsoft and Asobo have to walk a fine line between making Flight Simulator the sim that hardcore fans want and an accessible game that brings in new players. Ive played every version of Flight Simulator since the 90s, so getting started took exactly zero time. My sense is that new players simply looking for a good time may feel a bit lost at first, despite Microsoft adding landing challenges and other more gamified elements to the sim. In a press briefing, the Asobo team regularly stressed that it aimed for realism over anything else and Im perfectly okay with that. Well have to see if that translates to being a fun experience for casual players, too.

Free Speech Fights Have Historically Targeted the Left – Teen Vogue

Once upon a time, the biggest free speech battles in the country werent happening on college campuses or Fox News, and they had nothing to do with aggrieved Republican boomers or so-called cancel culture. A century ago, these conflicts unfolded on the streets of cities like Spokane, Washington, Missoula, Montana, and San Diego, California, where police doled out beatings and threw leftist protesters in jail by the hundreds for the crime of publicly exercising their First Amendment rights. Led by a revolutionary industrial labor union, the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), these free speech fights centered on the right of organizers to stand on soapboxes and speak out about capitalisms exploitation of workers. Soapboxing was a core component of the IWWs organizing strategy, so, in the 1900s, when authorities (who regarded organizers as a nuisance at best, and treasonous at worst) began cracking down on the ability of organizers to speak freely to their fellow workers, the Wobblies fought back.

Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, a prominent Wobbly organizer, was often at the epicenter of the free speech campaign. The radical labor organizer, who was particularly focused on lifting up women workers, traveled the country spreading the good word of revolutionary unionism, and became known as a fiery orator. In 1909, after the Spokane City Council made it illegal to hold a public meeting or give a speech downtown, the IWW put out a call for Wobblies from across the country to flood the city with protests; this action was later immortalized in the pamphlet, Wanted: Men to Fill the Jails of Spokane. We dont want you for riot or violence, Flynn reportedly wrote in a call to action published in the Industrial Worker. We need you to defend your organizations rights to free speech and free press. Are you game?

The Wobblies paid dearly for their commitment to free speech. Flynn was jailed multiple times for her efforts, and she and the other Wobblies were treated monstrously while imprisoned. Some of the women were sexually assaulted by guards, and the men were tortured by exposure to extreme temperatures. But the ones who survived kept fighting, and eventually brought the campaign to nearly two dozen cities. They kept up the pressure until 1917, when the U.S. entered World War I, Congress passed the Espionage Act, and the Justice Department launched a massive 24-hour raid on every single IWW office in the country in an effort to shut them down. The next year, over 100 organizers were tried on charges of violating the Espionage Act, which barred anyone from voicing public opposition to WWI or obstructing the war effort (for example, by encouraging young men to resist the draft, which the IWW often did from soapboxes). Emma Goldman and her associate Alexander Berkman, two of the periods best-known anarchists, were arrested under the Espionage Act for their anti-war agitation, and were eventually deported to Russia with other purged radicals on a ship dubbed the Soviet Ark.

The persecution of the Wobblies is an instructive example of who has had to suffer the real price of crackdowns on free speech in the United States. Time and time again, we have seen those who advocate for social progress face blacklisting, punishment, and imprisonment for speaking out.

From slavery, to the struggle for civil rights, to today, the government has proffered the rights of truly free speech on some and not others, author P.E. Moskowitz wrote in their 2019 book, The Case Against Free Speech: The First Amendment, Fascism, and the Future of Dissent, which analyzes decades of leftist repression and the evolving definition of free speech. We don't need to look very far back to know that free speech is a conditional freedom in this country, and that those conditions are nearly always defined by those in power.

If You Think Social Media Is Violating Your Free Speech, You Need To Sit Down And Listen To Me – Scary Mommy

Scary Mommy and Westend61/Getty

By now, most of us have seen or at least heard about the video circulating with the Frontline doctors making bogus claims about coronavirus. In the video, people in white lab coats stand in front of the Supreme Court building in Washington, D.C. and make a bunch of idiotic claims about COVID-19, for example, that the studies on hydroxychloroquine are by fake pharma companies and thatmasks dont prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The doctors in the video call themselves Americas Frontline Doctors even though none are actually on the front line of the COVID-19 pandemic. Several are opthamologists, and one, Stella Immanuel, is known for her beliefs that certain gynecological issues are brought on by having sex with demons in dreams and that lizard spirits with alien DNA run the country. This is not hyperbole or hearsay. She has videos up on YouTube and is dead-ass serious.Dead. Ass. Serious.

Anywho. The radical right-wing site Breitbart published the Frontline Doctors video because why wouldnt they, and their nutty conspiracy-humping followers shared it far and wide. And, in more WTF this cannot be reality news, the idiot president of the United States and his equally idiotic son Donald Jr. shared portions of the video on Twitter.

We are living in a time when the president of the United States, with complete sincerity, puts his trust in a doctor who literally believes human-reptile hybrids run the government and reproductive problems come from dream-sex with demons. So thats fun.

Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube all removed the video, each stating that it violated their COVID-19 misinformation policies. Rightly so. We have enough to debate without entertaining absolute fucking nonsense.

Those who fall for the nonsense in the video feel that removing it is a violation of their rights or the rights of those who posted the video. They believe that Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube are part of a massive conspiracy, that tech giants are in bed with the deep state, are controlling the dissemination of information, and are colluding with big pharma. For these people, the fact that the video is being removed is evidence of its authenticity.

Meanwhile, there are also plenty of people who acknowledge that though the information being spread by this video is wrong and dangerous and even deadly, we still shouldnt censor this video or others like it. Of course this information is dangerous, they say, but I dont believe in censorship. They say its a slippery slope. They ask why Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube should be allowed to be the arbiters of truth.

On May 28, Trump issued an executive order preventing online censorship. The order reads as if it were written by an angry teenager who got mad when his teacher gave him a bad grade that he deserved. It claims that every American has a right to have a voice and have that voice heard in debate. Its no coincidence that this order was issued around the time Twitter was placing notices over some of Trumps tweets.

What Trump really wants is carte blanche to spread whatever lies necessary to clinch the coming election.

But what Trump, and a whole lot of other people, fail to understand, is that censorship, as it relates to free speech, is a the government is not allowed to do it thing. It has fuck-all to do with a private company (like a social media platform) determining that certain information is not only bogus, but dangerous, and deciding to block that information from the platform.

There is a parallel supreme court decision (Hazelwood School District v. Kuhlmeier, 1988) that says students do not have the right to print material in a school newspaper over the objections of the schools administration. The parallel here is that those who participate in a social media platform are under an obligation to adhere to the rules of that platform, the same as students who participate in a school district areunder an obligation to adhere to the rules of that district. The platform makes the rules.

If peopleincluding Trumpdont like the way social media platforms manage the information shared there, they are perfectly free to go to a different platform. They are free to create their own blog or website or whatever. No one is censoring anyone from posting online. A social media platform is not THE online. Its its own separate entity, like a business in a neighborhood or a school in a district. Controlling what goes on its site is not the same as a government censoring its people or violating their right to free speech. Twitter can kick you out of its platform for ranting and raving about demon sex the same way any other business owner can kick you out of its store for ranting and raving about demon sex.The point is that the ranting and raving represents a clear danger to other people on the platform.

Social media platforms absolutely should censor these stupid AF informational videos from Front Line Doctors and other similarly dangerous misinformation. They have every right to demand credibility and accountability from the people who use their platform to share information.

Again, for the people in the back: a social media platform removing your shit is not a violation of free speech. Thats for my fellow lefties, too, by the way. There is no slippery slope here. There is not even a fucking slope to make slippery. We can get mad if something we post gets taken down, but none of us should cry that our rights are being violated. Because theyre not.

The threat to free speech is universal – Spiked

Left, right, rich and poor millions fear expressing their opinions today.

A culture of fear is undermining ordinary peoples freedom of expression, as a new report into self-censorship in the US attests.

The headline statistic of the report, produced by the Cato Institute, is that 62 per cent of Americans agree with the statement, The political climate these days prevents me from saying things I believe because others might find them offensive. This figure has risen from 58 per cent in 2017.

The report demonstrates a number of key points. One is that concern for the health of free speech is not the preserve of the right. Though conservatives are more likely to say they self-censor (77 per cent), just over half of liberals (52 per cent) and nearly two thirds of moderates (64 per cent) say they do, too. Indeed, strong liberals are the only group who disagree with the above statement by a majority and even among them, there has been a 12 percentage-point increase since 2017 in those who feel they have to self-censor. This is a greater increase than that among moderates and conservatives.

As for the percentage of those who fear for their job prospects due to their views, this is very similar across political lines: 34 per cent of conservatives, 31 per cent of liberals and 30 per cent of moderates worry they could miss out on job opportunities or get fired if their political views became known.

Free-speech worries cross ethnic divides, too. Sixty-five per cent of Latino Americans one percentage point more than white Americans have political views they are afraid to share. Meanwhile, 49 per cent of African Americans are in the same position.

Likewise, income is not a major factor. Sixty per cent of those with incomes in excess of $100,000 hold opinions they fear sharing, while 58 per cent of those with incomes under $20,000 have the same anxieties.

Obviously, caveats need to be added here. Any such investigation runs into some methodological problems. For example, how are we to define the various political groupings used? And what exactly does self-censorship mean to different people?

Still, the situation the report reveals is impossible to ignore. While those who deny the existence of cancel culture present free-speech concerns as the preserve of the rich and powerful, huge numbers of ordinary people feel the need to conceal their opinions out of fear of a potential backlash. This political landscape is far from healthy, and the statistics suggest things are getting worse.

One thing that may have made matters worse, as Tom Slater has noted recently on spiked, is that even supposed leftists now defend the right of employers to sack people for their views. How these people can reconcile their support for workers rights with their rejection of a workers right to hold certain opinions, even privately, is anyones guess.

But it is not just leftists who are undermining free speech. Many on the right indulge in cancel culture, too. In the UK recently, Tory MPs have joined pile-ons against BBC journalists for views they expressed years ago. A few years back, a woman was hounded out of her job by a right-wing outrage mob for shouting Nazi at a Trump supporter .

The Cato report reveals that 31 per cent of Americans say they would back the sacking of a business executive if they donated to Donald Trumps campaign. Meanwhile, 22 per cent said they would support the sacking of someone for donating to Joe Bidens campaign.

Free speech is a universal right, which must be defended by all and for all. This report reminds us that there is still much work to be done.

Year of the Phish? Socially-Engineered Attacks Populate Crypto in 2020 – Finance Magnates

When it comes to cryptocurrency-related crime, every year seems to have its own particular flavor. 2018 was the year of massive exchange hacks (remember Coincheck?); 2019 was seasoned with an air of massive ponzi schemes (PlusToken, OneCoin) with a few scandals thrown in the mix (QuadrigaCX, anyone?)

So far in 2020, however, the most memorable crypto-related criminal moments seem to be taking a new shape. As cryptocurrency exchanges have continued to beef up their security measures, and global regulators and law enforcement are learning how to curb crypto crime, criminals are increasingly attacking from a new angle: socially-engineered cyber attacks.

The Most Diverse Audience to Date at FMLS 2020 Where Finance Meets Innovation

Of course, these kinds of manipulative tactics have been a part of the cryptosphere since its inception: even outside of the cryptosphere, cyberattacks that exploit human trust are as old as time (or at least as old as the internet). Phishing, stolen identity scams, and many other kinds of exploitative scams are, unfortunately, very popular.

So far this year, socially-engineered attacks appear to be playing an outsized role in cryptos scam landscape. Is 2020 cryptos Year of the Phish?

After all, it certainly seems that the most memorable crypto-related cybercrime story of the year so far was based on multiple angles of trust exploitation.

On July 15th, the Twitter accounts of dozens of high-profile individuals across political and celebrity spheres tweeted out messages saying that they would double the amount of Bitcoin that was sent to their wallet addresses and send it back. This is called a Giveaway scam.

Dozens, or even hundreds, of unsuspecting users sent a total of more than $100,000 to the bitcoin addresses they believed to be associated with Barack Obama, Elon Musk, Joe Biden, and many others.

How did this happen?

Legend has it that a vampire cant enter your house unless they are invited inand, sure enough, when 17-year-old Graham Ivan Clark was able to access and post from the Twitter accounts in questoin, it was because an unsuspecting Twitter employee accidentally handed him the keys to the kingdom.

Indeed, Clarks attack was designed to manipulate and exploit human trust from beginning to end: he reportedly used phishing email tactics to convince a Twitter employee that he was a coworker in the companys IT department. He then got the employee to provide their credentials, allowing him to access Twitters God mode.

However, Graham Ivan Clarks attack on Twitterwhile it may be the most famous crypto-related cyberattack this yearis only one of many socially-engineered cyberattacks in the crypto space.

In fact, just this week, attacks that closely resembled Clarks attack on Twitter have rocked the world of Youtube.

Specifically, hackers appear to systematically be taking over prominent Youtube channels. They hackers then change the names of the channels, and then post videos urging viewers to send Bitcoin with the same promise that Clark offered victims on Twitter: that their coins would be doubled and sent back to them.

Business Insider reported that unlike the Twitter scams, the exploited Youtube accounts dont appear to have been compromised through a widespread security breach of Youtubes internal operations. Rather, hackers appear to have only gotten ahold of the credentials for the specific accounts theyre interested in hacking.

The hackers also appeared to take advantage of the SpaceX landing that occurred last week as a means of getting more clicks on their videos: the names of the compromised channels were changed to terms like SpaceX or Elon Musk to exploit the increased interest in SpaceXs collaboration with NASA.

Esports commentator Rod Breslau also pointed out that some of the channels livestreamed Bitcoin scam videos may have used viewbotsbots that artificially inflate the number of views that a channel hasto heighten their visibility.

Youtubes crypto hack problem isnt just limited to last weeks events.

In mid-July, Finance Magnates reported that a number of Youtube accounts were co-opting the identities of a number of prominent figures within the cryptosphere to make the same kinds of fraudulent promises: send us your crypto, and well double it and send it back.

On July 12th, Charles Hoskinson, the founder of the Cardano (ADA) cryptocurrency network, posted publicly on Twitter about the scams: it has come to my attention that a scam has been floating around using my conference keynote to promote a giveawaythis is a scam. Please report it to YouTube. We will take legal action if we can against those responsible.

Around the same time, however, CoinDesk reported that a number of other fake videos and accounts had sprung up under the identities of Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, Gemini founders Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and others.

Other than removing reported videos, its still unclear what Youtube is doing to try and curb these scams. A Twitter user alleged that the fraudsters behind the fake Youtube videos are also putting [their videos] in youtube ads which is insane, he asked. Is youtube ignoring this for revenue? How are they not vetting the ads?

Finance Magnates reached out to Youtube, but didnt immediately receive a response. Comments will be added as they are received.

In addition to co-opting the identities of individuals within the cryptocurrency sphere, however, hackers also seem to be increasingly taking on the identities of platforms.

Specifically, blockchain trading and analytics firm Whale Alert published a study in July with findings that crypto scammers are increasingly building fake cryptocurrency exchanges.

Some of these fake exchanges may take on the appearance of existing, legitimate crypto exchanges, while others may set up shop on their own before disappearing with users funds. The fake exchanges are also a convenient way for hackers to rack up large amounts of users personal data: identity records, credit card numbers, bank account information, and more.

In its report, Whale Alert commented that the change in method and the increase in quality and scale suggests that entire professional teams are now behind some of the most successful of these fake exchanges, and that it is just a matter of time before they start using deepfakes, a technique that will surely revolutionize the scam market.

And indeed, on the whole, Whale Alert noted a trend in cryptocurrency fraud after the mid-July Twitter attack: the scale and the boldness of the attack confirm our fears that the scammers are becoming more professional and dangerous.

Specifically, what started with mostly bulk sent sextortion emails and malware has now evolved into fake enterprises offering round-the-clock customer support with dozens of websites and thousands of fake social media accounts used for promotion.

This apparent increase in professionally built, socially-engineered cyberattacks appears to also have dramatically increased the amount of money that hackers have managed to abscond with.

Indeed, Whale Alerts report found that scammers BTC income appears to have surged throughout the first six months of this year.

So far we have been able to confirm 38 million US dollar in bitcoin alone stolen by scammers over the past 4 years (excluding Ponzi schemes, which are a billion-dollar industry on their own), the report said, $24 million of which [were stolen] during the first 6 months of 2020.

At the moment, Whale Alert seems to believe that this will only get worse: by the end of 2020, we predict [the crypto scam market] will have grown over twenty-fold since 2017 to an annual revenue of at least 50 million US dollars.

Can anything be done to stop the growth of the cryptocurrency scam market?

It seems that yes, falling victim to these kinds of scams is certainly preventable: the social media platforms that are being used to spread these scams are certainly taking action.

Twitter, for example, told users that were accelerating several of our pre-existing security workstreams and improvements to our tools. We are also improving our methods for detecting and preventing inappropriate access to our internal systems and prioritizing security work across many of our teams.

Other platformsincluding Youtubeappear to have taken an approach to quick response and removal of fraudulent cryptocurrency-related accounts and videos.

Additionally, regulators and law enforcement agencies around the world seem to be continuously learning and developing strategies for dealing with crypto-related fraud.

However, Whale Alert alleges that the primary responsibility of fraud prevention at the moment lies on the cryptocurrency community.

For example, while crypto giveaway scams may seem like they may only affect the most gullible among us, legitimate blockchain and cryptocurrency platforms often hold legitimate crypto giveaways.

Therefore, established blockchain companies play a big role in normalizing the idea of free money through giveaways and should be more thoughtful about what message they carry outwards and stop with these kinds of promotions altogether, Whale Alert argues.

Additionally, crypto companies should use their power and presence to effectively communicate the risks of the fraudulent crypto world to their users: as the gateway between fiat and cryptocurrencies, exchanges especially should be actively educating newcomers on the dangers in blockchain and prevent them from sending anything to known or suspected scam addresses.

Indian government yet to approve the cryptocurrency ban bill – FXStreet

In reply to an RTI submitted earlier, the Finance and Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) has said that the inter-ministerial committees cryptocurrency bill is awaiting approval of the government. Several ministries are currently examining the bill.

In February 2019, the inter-ministerial committee had submitted the bill titled Banning of Cryptocurrency and Regulation of Official Digital Currencies Bill 2019. Former DEA Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg heads the committee.

Mohammed Danish, lawyer and co-founder of Crypto Kanoon, had filed an RTI with the DEA requesting the status of the bill. In a short reply, the DEA wrote:

The government has set up inter-ministerial committee (IMC) for examining the issues of cryptocurrencies under the chairmanship of Secretary (EA).

The report of the IMC on VCs [virtual currencies] has since been submitted by its members, but is awaiting approval of the government. The report and bill now be examined by the government through inter-ministerial consultation by moving a cabinet note in due course.

Danish explained that the bill in question proposes a blanket ban on all cryptocurrency-related activities. He added that the bill prescribes punishments for every activity from mining, holding, advertising, promoting, buying, and selling digital assets.

He added that it is unclear and quite pre-mature to predict what the Ministry of Finance will do. However, it appears that the ministry does not want to proceed with this crypto bill for parliamentary clearance in the present form. He added:

If the govt. decides to pass a law banning crypto, this law can be challenged by crypto business, traders, or enthusiasts based on various rights available to them under the Constitution.

COVID-19 UPDATE: Gov. Justice announces reopening plan for West Virginia schools – West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources

Safety metrics If a county were to see substantial community transmission, Gov. Justice, State Superintendent of Schools Clayton Burch, and the affected county superintendent would work together on additional actions to keep schools safe, including stopping in-person instruction and going to full remote learning if necessary.

Gov. Justice announced Wednesday that he has directed the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) and State medical experts to work with the WVDE to develop a metric that will be used to indicate when it is safe to go to school and when community transmission rises to a level where additional action may be necessary.

The Governor announced that the metric, which is still in development, will be based on each countys rate of COVID-19 cases over certain periods of time.

As soon as the metric is finalized, it will be made publicly available. The numbers for each county will be posted to an online dashboard and a map for the public to see.

Over the next 10 to 14 days or so, we will develop a code system, Gov. Justice said. From that, what well do is be able to look at an area and say, This county has this level of the metric and it is beyond what we think is acceptable for the schools to be open. From there, in that county at that point in time, we would not have schools open. We would do it all virtually until we get the numbers back down.

Depending on how each county is performing in the metric, they will each be assigned one of four colors: green, yellow, orange, or red.

Green indicates that a county is experiencing minimal community transmission, allowing counties to operate under general re-entry guidelines while continuing to follow best health practices to prevent the spread of the disease.

Yellow indicates that a county is experiencing moderate community transmission and increased restrictions may be necessary.

Orange indicates that a county is experiencing higher community transmission and further restrictions will be necessary, in collaboration with local health officials.

Red indicates that a county is experiencing substantial community transmission. Under these conditions all in-person instruction would be suspended and remote learning plans would be activated. Staff would continue essential support services, including meals, student engagement, and special education.

Each countys performance in respect to the safety metric will be continuously evaluated by DHHR and updated on the online dashboard and map resources.

NIH clinical trial to test antibodies and other experimental therapeutics for mild and moderate COVID-19 – National Institutes of Health

News Release

Tuesday, August 4, 2020

Initial trial to determine if monoclonal antibodies can shorten severity of COVID-19 in outpatients.

A Phase 2 clinical trial will evaluate the safety and efficacy of potential new therapeutics for COVID-19, including an investigational therapeutic based on synthetic monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) to treat the disease. Researchers sponsored by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, are working with clinical sites to identify potential patient volunteers currently infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus which causes COVID-19, who have mild to moderate disease not requiring hospitalization. They will be invited to take an experimental therapy or a placebo as part of a rigorously designed randomized clinical trial. The trial, which is known as ACTIV-2, also may investigate other experimental therapeutics later under the same trial protocol.

If the investigational mAbs show promise, the study would expand from a Phase 2 to a Phase 3 trial to gather additional critical data from a larger pool of volunteers without delay. The trial will be led by the NIAID-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and will enroll participants at sites around the world.

ACTIV-2 was established as part of NIHsAccelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines (ACTIV),a public-private partnership program instituted to speed development of the most promising treatments and vaccines. This study isalso receiving support throughOperation Warp Speed, the U.S. governments multi-agency effort to develop, manufacture and distribute medical countermeasures to fight COVID-19.

The design of the study is adaptive to enable maximum flexibility in the shortest time frame. If the experimental treatment appears effective in the first stage, the treatment can be advanced rapidly to testing in larger groups of volunteers. The study also can be adapted to test additional therapeutics.

We have seen encouraging, rapid results from other adaptive treatment trials for COVID-19, said NIH DirectorFrancis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. Under ACTIV, specific therapeutics are being prioritized based on their likelihood for success. Prioritized therapeutics under ACTIV will use a master protocol that emphasizes flexibility, which enables these critical trials to be conducted without incurring delays when a treatment shows promise.

The first therapeutic to be tested in this trial will be LY-CoV555, an investigational monoclonal antibody made byEli Lilly and Company (Indianapolis, Indiana). LY-CoV555 emerged from Lillys collaboration with AbCellera Biologics (Vancouver, British Columbia). Antibodies are infection-fighting proteins produced by immune cells. So-called neutralizing antibodies target specific viruses or other pathogens. This antibody, which was discovered by AbCellera in collaboration withNIAIDs Vaccine Research Center, was isolated from a blood sample from a recovered COVID-19 patient. Copies of this antibody were then synthesized in a labthe term monoclonal refers to these laboratory-manufactured antibodies.

Using an antibody generated by the immune system of a recovered COVID-19 patient gives us a jump start on finding a safe and effective therapeutic, said NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D. Investigating a variety of different therapeutics, including monoclonal antibodies, will help ensure that we advance towards an effective treatment for people suffering from COVID-19 disease as quickly as possible.

The initial stage of the trial is designed to enroll approximately 220 volunteers who report recently experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 and who test positive for the virus but are not hospitalized. Once enrolled, they will be randomly assigned to one of two groups: 110 volunteers will receive an intravenous (IV) infusion of LY-CoV555, and 110 volunteers will receive a placebo infusion of a saline solution. The infusion takes approximately an hour to deliver, and volunteers will be observed afterwards to note any reactions.

Over the next 28 days, participants will attend a series of clinic or at-home visits by clinicians to track their COVID-19 symptoms. Investigators also will check whether RNA from SARS-CoV-2, can still be detected in participants noses and saliva using a standard nasopharyngeal swab. Because people with COVID-19 often have unusually low blood oxygen levels, participants will receive pulse oximetry tests to help determine if the investigational therapeutic has a positive effect on blood oxygen levels. They also will give blood samples to help researchers understand how the experimental therapeutics are functioning in their bodies, as well as whether they are affecting the course of their SARS-CoV-2 infection. Participants will receive additional follow-up for up to 24 weeks.

The primary goals of the Phase 2 trial are to evaluate safety, to see if the investigational therapeutic can reduce the duration of symptoms through study day 28, and to see if the investigational therapeutic can increase the proportion of participants with undetectable virus in nasopharyngeal swabs at specific time points. If there are no serious safety concerns and if the investigational therapeutic appears to meet other specific other criteria (such as sufficiently reducing the duration of symptoms or the viral load in the volunteers bodies), the trial will transition to Phase 3 and enroll up to 1,780 additional outpatient volunteers, for a total of 2,000 trial participants. The primary goal of the Phase 3 study will be to determine if the investigational therapeutic can prevent either hospitalization or death through study day 28 while also continuing to evaluate its safety. Participants in the Phase 3 portion of the study will not be provided nasopharyngeal swabs, though they will still perform self-collected anterior nasal swabs, and they will attend fewer clinic visits.

The study team is led by Protocol Chair Davey Smith, M.D., of the University of California, San Diego, David Wohl, M.D., of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), and Kara W. Chew, M.D., and Eric S. Daar, M.D., both of the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA),serve as protocol vice-chairs. The ACTG network is led by chair Judith Currier, M.D. (UCLA) and co-chairJoseph Eron, M.D. (UNC).

To ensure that the trial is being conducted in a safe and effective manner, an independent data and safety monitoring board will oversee the trial and periodically review the accumulating data.

One death every 80 seconds: The grim new toll of COVID-19 in America – NBC News

Over the last seven days, a grim new COVID-19 calculus has emerged: one person died every 80 seconds from the coronavirus in America.

And the pace at which those 7,486 people died appears to be accelerating, a new NBC News tally revealed Wednesday.

In July, a total of 26,198 deaths were reported, meaning one every 102 seconds. As of Wednesday morning, more than 158,000 people in the U.S. had died of the virus since the start of the pandemic.

Let our news meet your inbox. The news and stories that matters, delivered weekday mornings.

The numbing new national snapshot of how COVID-19 is claiming more and more lives came as Johns Hopkins University reported another milestone: The world death toll from this plague had eclipsed 700,000.

The U.S. has logged over 4.8 million confirmed cases. And around 1.8 million of those have come since July 7, when the 3 millionth case was reported, NBC News figures show.

While most of the new cases and deaths have been in the South and Sun Belt, states in the northeast like New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts that were hit hardest at the start of the pandemic and were able to flatten the curve have also reported worrying upticks.

Under fire for being slow to respond to the COVID-19 crisis and presiding over the biggest economic disaster since the Great Depression, President Donald Trump once again downplayed the extent of the pandemic in a call-in interview Wednesday with "Fox & Friends."

This thing is going away, he said. It will go away like things go away.

Joe Biden, the Democrat hoping to oust Trump from the White House come November, fired back.

Donald Trump continues to live in a world of delusion, Biden said in a statement.

Common colds train the immune system to recognize COVID-19 – Live Science

Previous infections with common cold viruses can train the immune system to recognize SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, according to a new study.

The study, published Aug. 4 in the journal Science, found that immune cells known as T cells that recognize common cold coronaviruses also recognize specific sites on SARS-CoV-2 including parts of the infamous "spike" protein it uses to bind to and invade human cells.

This existing immune system "memory" may explain why some people have milder COVID-19 infections compared with others; however, the authors stress that this hypothesis is "highly speculative" and requires more research to confirm. That's because it's unknown exactly how big a role T cells play in fighting COVID-19 T cells are just one part of a complex menagerie of molecules and cells that makes up our immune system.

"We have now proven that, in some people, preexisting T-cell memory against common cold coronaviruses can cross-recognize SARS-CoV-2, down to the exact molecular structures," study co-lead author Daniela Weiskopf, assistant professor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology in La Jolla, California, said in a statement.

It's possible that this "immune reactivity may translate to different degrees of protection" against COVID-19, study co-lead author Alessandro Sette, a professor at La Jolla Institute for Immunology, said in the statement. "Having a strong T-cell response, or a better T-cell response may give you the opportunity to mount a much quicker and stronger response."

Related: COVID-19 antibodies may fade, but vaccine hopes have not

Previous studies have shown that upwards of 50% of people never exposed to COVID-19 have T cells that recognize SARS-CoV-2. This ability has been seen in people around the world, in the Netherlands, Germany, the United Kingdom and Singapore. Scientists hypothesized that this existing immunity could be due to previous infections with other coronaviruses, specifically those that cause common cold infections.

In the new study, the researchers analyzed blood samples collected from people between 2015 and 2018, well before COVID-19 first emerged in Wuhan, China.

These blood samples contained T cells that reacted to more than 100 specific sites on SARS-CoV-2. The researchers showed that these T cells also reacted to similar sites on four different coronaviruses that cause common cold infections.

"This study provides very strong direct molecular evidence that memory T cells can 'see' sequences that are very similar between common cold coronaviruses and SARS-CoV-2," Sette said.

In addition to binding to the spike protein, the T cells also recognized other viral proteins beyond the spike.

Currently, most COVID-19 vaccine candidates target the spike protein, but the new findings suggest that including other proteins in a vaccine, besides the spike, might harness this T cell cross reactivity and potentially enhance the vaccine's potency, the researchers said, although much more research would be needed to show this.

The authors note that their findings of cross-reactivity with T cells are different from what has been seen with neutralizing antibodies another weapon of the immune system that blocks a pathogen from infecting cells. Neutralizing antibodies against common cold viruses are specific to those viruses and don't show cross-reactivity with SARS-CoV-2, according to previous studies, the authors said.

Hundreds meet in Loveland park to discuss resistance to COVID-19 actions – Loveland Reporter-Herald

A large group gathered in Lovelands Dwayne Webster Veterans Park on Wednesday to hear from a series of speakers opposed to recent mask orders and other government actions aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.

After Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith announced through a spokesman that he would not be attending, the organizer of a parallel Crashing the Party event said they stopped promoting their event as strongly.

Few Crashing the Party attendees were visible at the event, with most lingering around the edge of a large semicircle of lawn chairs that surrounded the open grassy area where speakers presented.

(Jenny Sparks / Loveland Reporter-Herald)

Julie Formby of Keep Colorado Free and Open organized the main event and said other speakers were approached after she learned of Sheriff Smiths withdrawal.

Speakers on Wednesday included representatives of Faith Education Commerce Colorado, Reopen Colorado, Recall Polis 2020 and attorney Mark Patlan, who is representing the plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Gov. Jared Polis and others alleging recent mask orders are unconstitutional.

Based on the turnout, its obvious people still want to know what their options are for exercising their constitutional rights within these mandates, Formby said.

Formby pushed back against statements made by the sheriffs office that the focus of the event had changed, saying the purpose of the event was clearly stated from the start.

She also addressed a list of burning questions that she posted to a public Facebook page associated with the event, including questions about when demonstrators would be justified in using violence and whether Smith would be willing to deputize every man, woman and child.

We received a variety of questions from members of the public, she said. Law-abiding citizens are wondering at what point do we defend ourselves from the violence thats been happening.

While she said not all of the events attendees were anti-maskers, few of the audience members wore masks, and some of the speakers directly challenged their efficacy.

I dont think they make people feel more safe; I think they make people feel in danger, Patlan said. They dont work, and theres no reliable scientific data to prove it.

The efficacy of mask-wearing is supported by a growing body of research, and the use of masks is encouraged, among other precautions, by the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and other agencies. Face masks work by blocking respiratory droplets microscopic amounts of moisture that may contain active coronavirus virions or other pathogens from traveling through the air and spreading disease.

Audience members too said they doubted the usefulness of masks in combating the spread of the coronavirus.

David Wood of Loveland, who brought his bugle with him to make noise in support of the speakers, said he believed the information supporting the use of masks was junk science.

I know a few who have died from it, but I know of far more people who are out of jobs and unemployed because of this lockdown, he said. And they say that because of COVID unemployment is up. No. Its because of government, not the disease.

Brian Spencer of Weld County said he and others came out Wednesday to protect attendees from Black Lives Matter supporters.

In Berthoud, we stepped in between some of the counterdemonstrators and the police, he said. You could say were here to keep the peace.

He also admitted that he was curious about the speakers messages but said he understood why Sheriff Smith had pulled out of the event.

Formby said she was hopeful that the event would encourage more people to volunteer with her group and help coordinate follow-up events.

Gladwin-area youth camp connected to 53 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 13 probable cases – Detroit Free Press

Central Michigan District Health Department officials have traced dozens of recent coronavirus cases to a Gladwin-area summer camp.

The Springs Ministries summer camp, at 1950 M-30 in Gladwin, is connected to 53 confirmed coronavirus cases, along with 13 probable cases, said Steve Hall, health officer for the Central Michigan District Health Department. Of the 66 cases in all, 27 are campers, 27 are staff or camp counselors and 12 are secondary cases.

The last week of camp was canceled due to the outbreak. On the camps website, Springs Ministries said a camper tested positive after returning home from a camp session the week of July 12-17. The camp was informed on July 22, and since then, the camp said it had staff test positive as well.

Americans Back Trump On Immigration But Only To Stop COVID-19, Poll Finds – NPR

A U.S. Border Patrol vehicle is stationed in front of the U.S.-Mexico border barrier as construction continues in hard-hit Imperial County on July 22, in Calexico, Calif.

Most Americans support Trump administration efforts to stop immigrants from coming to the United States as long as it's done in the name of slowing the spread of the coronavirus, according to a new NPR/Ipsos poll.

But Trump's anti-immigration rhetoric during the pandemic has done little to budge public opinion on other immigration policies, the poll found. Most of Trump's policies, including his border wall, remain unpopular except among Republicans.

"Americans do want to take steps to limit immigration right now," said pollster Mallory Newall. "But that's not because their views on immigration have changed. It's because they want to do everything in their power to contain the spread of COVID-19."

Meanwhile, immigration is no longer a top concern ahead of the November election. The poll shows it has been eclipsed by the coronavirus, racial justice, unemployment, political extremism and a range of other pressing issues.

The poll was conducted July 30-31 and surveyed 1,115 adults from the continental U.S., Alaska and Hawaii.

The poll found broad support for a single, national strategy to address the pandemic and for more aggressive measures to contain it. Two-thirds of respondents said they believe the U.S. is handling the pandemic worse than other countries, and most favor more aggressive action, including a nationwide order making it mandatory to shelter at home for two weeks.

Since March, Trump has taken broad actions to curtail legal immigration during the pandemic, imposing new limits on green cards and visas for guest workers, and turning away asylum seekers at the southern border. The administration also closed the southern and northern borders to all but "essential" travel.

There is sizable bipartisan support 85% of Republicans and 75% of Democrats for temporarily shutting down the borders. And more than half overall support limits on legal immigrants, though that is largely driven by Republicans.

"I feel like we need to take care of America first," Tammy Bunce, a Republican respondent from Queen Creek, Ariz. "We should be staying at home, and I think other countries should not be coming in until we have the coronavirus especially under control."

Another respondent, Robert Torres of San Leandro, Calif., is a third-generation immigrant from Mexico who identifies as politically independent. He said: "Right now is not a very good time to be immigrating."

That's partly because of the pandemic, Torres says, but also because "there's a lot of undocumented here that should be documented before we start adding to the immigration."

President Trump has made his immigration crackdown a signature policy and key to his argument for reelection.

From the outset of the pandemic, Trump has blamed foreigners for bringing coronavirus to the United States, calling it the "China virus" and "kung flu." He's also returned to a familiar refrain about protecting American jobs as justification for the latest immigration restrictions, pointing to the battered economy.

But Americans remain divided on immigration policy when it's not tied to stopping the spread of the virus.

"I get right now that we got this pandemic going on, that's fine," said Jo Lee of Houston, Texas, in a follow-up interview. "But once this calms down, if somebody really wants to come over here and raise their family and be a citizen, let them do that. I don't have a problem with that," said Lee, who says she often votes for Democrats.

That divide was clear when poll respondents were asked about whether the federal government should provide stimulus relief checks to undocumented immigrants who pay U.S. taxes: 49% of respondents said yes, including 71% of Democrats; 43% said no, including 66% of Republicans.

The NPR/Ipsos poll found that underlying attitudes about immigration are deeply entrenched, remaining remarkably stable since a previous poll in 2018. For example, about 70% of respondents then and now say immigrants are an "important part of our American identity."

And efforts to build a border wall and limit immigration still fail to garner majority support, except among Republicans, according to the poll:

What has changed, according to the new poll, is how much weight Americans place on immigration as an issue.

Two years ago, one in four respondents cited immigration as one of their top concerns, and it ranked fourth behind health care, crime and terrorism. Now 46% of respondents say COVID-19 is a top concern, while immigration has fallen out of the top 10, with only 11% of respondents saying it's one of the topics they find "most worrying."

Immigration is no longer "a major factor when it comes to deciding who to vote for," Ipsos pollster Mallory Newall said.

"That's where we're sort of almost seeing bipartisan agreement," she said. "People may not have the same stance when it comes to how to deal with the virus, how to deal with immigration. But what they do know is that taking care of COVID, and addressing that and taking care of the economy, is priority number one, full stop."

6 ways the COVID-19 pandemic could change our approach to human capital – World Economic Forum

The COVID-19 pandemic has illustrated the inextricable link between human health and organizational success. Investors and regulators, in turn, are looking to corporate boards of directors to step up their governance of human capital.

Companies with well-established human capital governance frameworks are considered better investments, capable of creating more long-term value; and regulators, such as the US Securities and Exchange Commission, have urged companies to disclose in upcoming earnings releases the actions theyve taken to protect the health of their employees.

Amid these changes and a still-unfolding COVID-19 crisis, employees are increasingly seen by boards of directors as vital stakeholders, critical to business recovery. As boards bring human capital governance to the fore, we see a renewed focus on employees and rapid changes in six areas: employee pay, well-being, inclusion and diversity (I&D), future of work, leadership and culture.

The COVID-19 pandemic has expedited the speed at which organizations are changing their pay programmes through pay reductions, incentive resets and pay premiums. The crisis has also reframed the way organizations segment their workforces to include essential and frontline workers. As it continues, organizations may need to consider long-term strategies to determine which changes will be temporary versus those that will be permanent.

In addition, serious conversations about racial injustice and fair treatment of all cohorts in society are raising further questions of whether pay programmes have other biases, beyond gender.

These issues could significantly impact whether the organization is truly delivering fair pay that is unbiased and aligned with the organizations I&D strategies. To help ensure pay equity, boards must understand the effectiveness of their organizations fair pay strategies. The fairness of how pay practices and programmes are designed and administered will need to be a top priority, as pay issues can be symptomatic of broader talent diversity issues.

Change and uncertainty have strained employees physically, emotionally and financially. Even before COVID-19, employee emotional and financial well-being were top concerns for businesses. Now, as companies continue to adapt to changing pandemic conditions, workforce health, resilience and well-being are even more critical to sustaining operations.

With widespread stay-at-home orders, employers have adjusted, reduced or suspended operations and shifted workforces online, all of which have affected overall employee well-being. As companies begin to reimagine the new workplace, employee health and safety will continue to be crucial. Boards will need to ensure that the right frameworks are in place and that managements well-being strategies sufficiently address top employee concerns while minimizing company risk.

This is a particularly important time for boards and executives to revisit their I&D strategies. Starting from the top, the composition of some boards might be less diverse than expected or optimal, which can create risks through the need for greater diversity of thought to navigate this uncertain time. In other parts of the organization, frontline worker furloughs have changed diversity statistics, particularly when those furloughs reduce diversity across the remaining workforce.

We also know that race will continue to be an important topic within many organizations and that companies will continue to be under pressure from investors and other stakeholders to demonstrate real and measurable progress in greater diversity among board members, senior management and the overall workforce.

A robust I&D strategy will not only decrease operational risk but also enhance levels of innovation: in an inclusive environment, diverse thought and perspectives increase as more people from different backgrounds share their insights.

While the future of work was well underway before the pandemic, COVID-19 has clearly hastened its arrival. Boards now have an opportunity to recalibrate their organizations talent strategies (mid- and post-pandemic) to adapt to our evolving reality.

The future of work in figures

For example, in the era of social distancing and increased remote working, companies are realigning talent strategies and reskilling their workforces. The Harvard Business Review found that, in the pandemic environment, organizations should consider three future-of-work concepts:

The COVID-19 pandemic necessitates actions to realign, repurpose and (re)skill talent. Companies that expedite the future of work by fostering human capital into more efficient, agile and purposeful resources mitigate risk while sustainably increasing competitiveness and profitability. Boards can take a long-term view of the future of work and ensure their organizations can proactively address the rapidly changing work environment.

For many, the physical workplace has become a health hazard and companies have been quick to make physical modifications or take the workplace entirely online. With this transformation, boards rely heavily on leaders to espouse a culture that promotes physical and psychological safety, all while delivering business results.

Boards should expect management to revisit the leadership capabilities that best support long-term value creation with deliberate consideration of their business purpose, values and cultures. Management should clearly articulate the new attributes of good leaders and establish processes to develop the right leaders based on these requirements.

The first global pandemic in more than 100 years, COVID-19 has spread throughout the world at an unprecedented speed. At the time of writing, 4.5 million cases have been confirmed and more than 300,000 people have died due to the virus.

As countries seek to recover, some of the more long-term economic, business, environmental, societal and technological challenges and opportunities are just beginning to become visible.

To help all stakeholders communities, governments, businesses and individuals understand the emerging risks and follow-on effects generated by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Marsh and McLennan and Zurich Insurance Group, has launched its COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications - a companion for decision-makers, building on the Forums annual Global Risks Report.

The report reveals that the economic impact of COVID-19 is dominating companies risks perceptions.

Companies are invited to join the Forums work to help manage the identified emerging risks of COVID-19 across industries to shape a better future. Read the full COVID-19 Risks Outlook: A Preliminary Mapping and its Implications report here, and our impact story with further information.

Most board-reviewed succession plans have focused on executive talent and a limited number of incumbents whose roles are critical to strategic or operational success. In the current environment, boards, with management support, might wish to reconsider their succession planning activities to include a broader definition of critical talent, one that might include future leaders lower in the organization as well as essential and frontline workers.

Expanding the definition of critical talent will help mitigate future disruptions caused by human capital. These efforts help future-proof organizations, as a robust talent pipeline across all organizational levels will be ready to react to changing business conditions.

Many high-performing companies remain committed to their employees, organizational purpose and values in these difficult times. They use purpose and cultural values to make fast decisions and create as much certainty as possible for employees, consumers and investors. Boards and organizations should work to create a culture where employees understand what to do to support the overall strategy.

Moving forward, organizations are likely to look for meaningful ways to measure culture and show progress. By working with their boards to define two to three important cultural attributes and measuring those attributes against market benchmarks, organizations can track cultural performance and develop strategies to maximize employee experience and, importantly, financial performance.

Relative to peers, we expect that the organizations who prioritized human capital as part of a broader sustainability strategy will be better able to mitigate risk and support value creation more broadly over the coming quarters. The good news for those that may not have moved as quickly as they would have liked is: its not too late to take these strategic actions.
