Las Vegas duo Stella Novae shoots for the stars on its debut EP – Las Vegas Weekly

On July 16, Las Vegans Javier Esqueda and Elliott Garfias debuted as electro-pop duo Stella NovaeFrench for new starwith EP Side A. The pair demonstrate their celestial potential on the six-song project, which oscillates between house-driven electronic rhythms and indie-leaning synth-pop.

Garfias and Esqueda met years ago, when a mutual friend introduced the two musicians. I needed a new singer, and [my friend] referred me to Javier, Garfias says. After Garfias heard Esquedas cover of Gnarls Barkleys Crazy, the two met up and things just clicked, Garfias says.

They played in a couple of bands together, then officially began making music as Stella Novae in January 2019. While they both maintain identities as solo performers (Esqueda as Javesque and Garfias under his own name), they worked throughout the pandemic shutdown to release their first batch of songs together.

Sometimes we get annoyed with each other and wont make music [together] for a little bit, Garfias laughs, but we always come back to making music.

At the start of 2020, the duo released single Pressure on Me, which received airplay on radio show The Premium Blend out of Hailsham, England (thepremiumblendradioshow.co.uk). More recently, the duo played a livestreamed show for Vegas LGBTQ platform Therapy Zine (instagram.com/therapyzine).

Esqueda, who writes all the lyrics, says Side A encompasses the ups and downs of day-to-day life. I just write about whatever Im going through, whatever struggles Im feeling, Esqueda says. A lot of the songs are a journey of past things that Ive [experienced].

On the music side, its Garfias in the saddle, crafting beats and melodies on his computer. The duo also enlisted the talents of bassist Victor Fuentes (bass), Michael Hoffman (drums) and Spencer King (keys) to give the tunes more organic vibes, Garfias says. Award-winning mastering engineer Brian Lucey (The Black Keys, Arctic Monkeys) mastered the EP, and Las Vegan Hugo Cruz Castillo mixed it.

Though Stella Novaes future remains cloudy given the current limitations on live performing, Esqueda says he hopes to travel with the duos music at some point. I would love to play festivals, Esqueda says. Once this is over, I want to go on a stage. I want to go on a stage right now, he says, adding that hed also be interested in trying a drive-in concert.

In the meantime, the members of Stella Novae have news: Theres more new music in the works. This next album is going to be [even] more organic, Esqueda says. Its going to have more of a band feel.

Seen in 702: Nevada appears not to be fond of California nor its drivers – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Save for the occasional wildfire or defending ones right to fight to breathe freely while standing in 110-degree weather, there has not been too much to see in the 702 lately.

The grind, or lack thereof, can get to more than a few people, especially with the stretch of triple-degree heat we have experienced.

However, there is innovation out there. The neighborhood Big Lots has turned its lemons into lemonade.

For instance, here are some throw pillows to remind people of their situation.

The home of cereals you forgot existed also redesigned its register area, giving consumers an extended chance to impulse buy.

So much for the opening act. Turning to the main feature, the Nevada Department of Transportation is appealing to the creative side of Nevadans to come up with messages emphasizing safety on the states highways and interstates.

Some of the RJ social media users have thrown their attempts out there. Hopefully, they can refine them and submit them to NDOT since it wont count here. Remember to submit your idea here, following the listed guidelines.

But even with the small sample size, drivers in Nevada are united over one belief: They do not like California.

The Golden State entries

Daniel Dejak: Go back to california

Matt Croswell: Go Home Californian

Edwin Smith: DONT DRIVE LIKE A CALIFORNIAN

The speedy entries

Doreen Lornzo: Its a highway NOT a racetrack!

David Blakeman: U really think they gonna read this and do it. Every day here in Vegas is like the Indy 500.

The good, straightforward entries

Tricia Lynnee says, Quit being so selfish. Drive like you care for yourself and the neighbor next to you. We are all in this together.

David Torrez: If it stears (sic) it clears pull off the road for minor fender benders and keep traffic flowing. Would make much more difference than click it or ticket.

Maureen Timmermans: Maybe it would be safer to not be reading so many signs. Distracted Driving?

Mark Novitch: How about Time traffic lights like your kids lives depend on it.

And our entries via Twitter

Bryan Fox Jr. (@BryanfoxJr): A clever message isnt going to make people drive safer. They either care already or they dont. Just put the damn travel times on the freeway marquees.

Speaks Freely (@SpeaksFreely13): Why not have it read. STOP RUNNING RED LIGHTS AND AROP (sic) DEINKING (sic) N DRIVING!!

You are encouraged to come up with your own message for the commuting masses. Send them to NDOT. But as suggested by past Seen in 702 contributor Dennis Rudner, I will offer this entry:

NDOT Haiku

Check all your mirrors

The Nevada life you save

Might just be your own

The middle line is beyond the contests parameters, but we have all month to submit. Get writing!

Show your support Most businesses are struggling financially right now, and restaurants are among the hardest hit. Every order helps, but keep this in mind: Using third-party delivery apps can divert money from a family-owned business to some corporate tech giant (although we do like keeping their drivers employed). To keep your money as local as possible, pick upor use in-house delivery serviceswhenever possible, even if its a bit more complicated than firing up a phone app.

Fees add up Another reason to consider in-person pickup: the little fees for those third-party delivery services can take a big bite out of your budget if youre not careful.

Keep it safe The goal is as little physical interaction as possible. Opt for contactless pickup or delivery, if its available. If not, at least choose your order in advance, so youre not standing around breathing shared air while you decide what to eat. And always, wear a mask, wash your hands and socially distance when possible.

Always, always tip Moneys tight everywhere these days, but hardworking folks are risking their health to provide you with a crucial service. The Maralee McKee Etiquette School of America says 10%-15% is the tipping standard for takeout orders, but during these tough times, you ought to consider going 20% and more if you can afford it.

The Latest: Brendon Todd claims a share of PGA lead – Las Vegas Sun

Published Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020 | 7:32 p.m.

Updated 1 hour, 37 minutes ago

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The Latest from the opening round of the PGA Championship in San Francisco:

___

Brendon Todd is back in the PGA Championship for the first time in five years and is tied for the lead.

Todd, who recovered from a wicked case of the yips that dropped him out of the top 2,000 players in the world, won twice on the PGA Tour in the fall and now is among the top 50.

He made a 10-foot par putt on his final hole to join Jason Day at 5-under 65. They were one shot ahead of nine players, including two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka.

As the first round at Harding Park was winding down, it was shaping up as a low day for scoring. Nearly half of the field was at par or better, including Tiger Woods at 68.

Day is a former PGA champion and no stranger to be at the top of the board in a major. This is only the ninth major Todd has played, and the second time he has opened with a round in the 60s.

___

Bryson DeChambeau released the Kraken, and the Kraken didn't come back.

The bulked-up golfer broke his driver, which he has nicknamed the Kraken, after teeing off on the seventh hole in the opening round of the PGA Championship on Thursday. A rules official said he would be allowed to replace the club during the round, and a member of DeChambeaus support team fetched another shaft for him.

That was weird, DeChambeau said as he walked toward the green, still holding the pieces. I guess its all those swings I put in.

DeChambeau gained as much as 40 pounds during the coronavirus shutdown, consuming up to 6,000 calories per day with the goal of getting huge. He is the longest-driving player on the tour.

But this time he was too strong for his own good.

DeChambeau hit what appeared to be a normal tee shot 296 yards into the rough on the par-4, 340-yard seventh hole at TPC Harding Park. But when he bent over to pick up his tee, the club snapped under him.

It was bound to break, DeChambeau said. Ive been using it for a long time.

___

2015 PGA Champion Jason Day has the early lead in the first round of the year's first major.

Day shot a 5-under 65 over the 7,251-yard TPC Harding Park to head to the clubhouse in front. Two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka was in a group of nine one stroke behind at minus-4, with some of the morning tee times still on the course.

Day had a bogey-free round that included a birdie on the par-4 ninth hole.

___

Scottie Scheffler is the first one in the clubhouse at 4-under in the opening round of the PGA Championship. Hes tied for fourth with three other players, including two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka.

Scheffler was up there at minus-5 with Martin Kaymer, Xander Schauffele and Zach Johnson before hitting his tee shot into the left rough and making bogey on his final hole of the day.

Scheffler was in the first group off the 10th tee in the morning.

Going first out was definitely an advantage, even though it was pretty cold when we started," he said. It warmed up fairly quick.

___

Major champions are starting to populate the leaderboard at the PGA Championship, including some names that haven't been heard from in a while.

Martin Kaymer, a PGA champion in 2010 and a U.S. Open champion in 2014, was at 5 under through 14 holes at the TPC Harding Park. He was in a four-way tie that included Zach Johnson, whose last major was at St. Andrews five years ago.

Kaymer is No. 128 in the world. Johnson is at No. 210.

What they have in common aside from a good start is the last majors they won was the last tournaments they won.

Scottie Scheffler, a PGA Tour rookie from Texas, and Xander Schauffele also were at 5 under.

Another shot back was Jason Day, who won the PGA Championship five years ago. He wasn't won in two years.

Brooks Koepka was 3 under through 12 holes, just the start he needed. Tiger Woods, after a quick start, was back to even par through 12.

___

Zach Johnson and Scottie Scheffler are off to an early lead at 4 under at the PGA Championship.

Starting on the back nine, Johnson was through eight holes after three straight birdies at TPC Harding Park. Scheffler was through 12 holes.

Dustin Johnson and Jason Day were at 3 under. Two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka was tied for fifth at minus-2 through eight holes in the first round on Thursday. Koepka would be the first golfer to win the tournament three times in a row since Walter Hagen won four in a row almost 100 years ago.

___

Two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka has teed off a TPC Harding Park as he tries to become the first golfer to win three PGA Championships in a row since Walter Hagen.

Koepka teed off on the back nine on Thursday morning and parred his first hole.

Koepka would be the first player ever to win the PGA Championship three straight times in stroke play. Hagen won four in a row from 1924-27, when it was match play.

The threesome of Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas also teed off from the back nine on Thursday morning.

___

Brian Harman hit the opening shot at the PGA Championship on Thursday, and it was clear as he looked down the first fairway at TPC Harding Park that it was a historic moment.

The fairway was lined by trees, not people.

The COVID-19 pandemic that forced the PGA Championship to move from May to August also led to this being the first major championship without spectators. That includes family members of the 156 players in the field, and limited media.

A few volunteers took out mobile phones to capture the moment. The starter announced in a microphone, From Sea Island, Georgia, Brian Harman. And there was no applause. There was no need for a microphone, either, but old habits die hard.

Harman pulled his tee shot into the rough. At least he found it. There is only one marshal for each hole, down from 12.

This is the first major of the year, with the Masters moved to November, the U.S. Open moved ot September and the British Open moved to 2021.

Two-time defending champion Brooks Koepka and Tiger Woods were among those playing in the morning.

Not just Price is right: Canadiens have Penguins on brink – Las Vegas Sun

Published Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020 | 3:32 p.m.

Updated 5 hours, 37 minutes ago

It seemed like any hope the Montreal Canadiens had of beating the Pittsburgh Penguins rested on the shoulders of goaltender Carey Price.

Price has shouldered a big load in net, but he's not the only reason the high-powered Penguins are on the brink of elimination, down 2-1 in the best-of-five qualifying round series. Montreal has held star Russian center Evgeni Malkin to zero even-strength points with one power-play assist through three games and can knock out Pittsburgh with one more victory in Game 4 Friday (4 p.m. EDT, NBC Sports Network).

Priceys been really solid: Hes making some key saves for us," center Phillip Danault said. But yeah, hes not alone in this and its important for him to know. We show some character, we go toe to toe. We embrace the challenge.

The Eastern Conference's 12th (and lowest) seed has shut down the NHL's best team that didn't get the luxury of a bye into the traditional first round of the playoffs. Beyond Price's 104 saves on 111 shots to match the lofty expectations for his game, the Canadiens have held the Penguins to three power-play goals in 15 chances and bottled up an opponent that won the Stanley Cup twice in the previous four seasons.

Two-time playoff MVP Sidney Crosby has scored twice and added an assist, though Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust are also tied with him for the most points on the Penguins with three. The team defense in front of Price has been suffocating and explains why the Canadiens are a win away from advancing.

Were definitely aware when Malkins on the ice or Crosbys on the ice and we try and limit their chances and take their space away as quick as possible, Montreal defenseman Ben Chiarot said. But theyre world-class players and theyre going to get their opportunities, and thats when Carey steps in and does what hes been doing for us. Its five of us out there working together, playing defense and were just trying to keep it as tight as possible when those guys are on the ice.

EYES ON NET

All eyes are on the goalies as the New York Islanders face the Florida Panthers and the Nashville Predators face the Arizona Coyotes on Friday.

The Islanders made $10 million Florida goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky look vulnerable in going up 2-0, and the Panthers made some lineup and strategy adjustments to fight to see another day. New York might be able to close it out if they can crack Bobrovsky once again in Game 4 (noon EDT, NBCSN).

A focus for us offensively for sure is trying to create some chaos, take away his eyes, Islanders forward Brock Nelson said. You have to find ways to kind of create some confusion in front with defenders, guys crossing in front and different things.

Three-time Cup-winning coach Joel Quenneville got rewarded for not pulling the plug on Bob after allowing six goals in the first two games of the series and hopes vintage Bobrovsky is here to stay.

He did what he had to do to give us a chance and got us a win, Quenneville said. Hes been under some situations where hes played in a lot of big moments like that, and I think that can help us moving forward.

Arizona goaltender Darcy Kuemper hasn't been in a lot of of big moments like this. It's just his second playoff series as the starter and the first since 2014, but that didn't stop him from making 39 saves Wednesday to push Nashville to the brink.

One more like that in Game 4 (2:30 p.m. EDT, NHL Network) and the Coyotes could be on to the round of 16.

The next game is going to be the most important pressure game again for Kuemps," coach Rick Tocchet said. "Hes had to do this for us a lot in the last two years, and to me its his attitude and the way he approaches the game, for me unflappable.

OILERS vs. BLACKHAWKS, Chicago leads 2-1 (6:45 p.m. Friday, NBCSN)

Goaltending and team defense havent been the story in the Western Conferences 5 vs. 12 series that has the Edmonton Oilers one loss away from elimination by Chicago. The three goalies who have seen action have allowed 26 goals on 185 shots.

Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said his team has to focus on getting better for Game 4 but doesnt think its as big a focus as cutting down on penalties.

Its not as if were giving up a ton of chances, Tippett said. Theyre going in our net, and we have to find a way to overcome some of those mistakes that are allowing that and find a way to keep them off the board and get us more.

BACK TO BACK

The Minnesota Wild don't have much time to regroup facing elimination in Game 4 (10:45 p.m., NBCSN) after being shut out 3-0 by Jacob Markstrom and the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday afternoon. Markstrom stopped all 27 shots he faced, though his teammates also blocked 22.

"They did a good job with blocking shots," Minnesota's Kevin Fiala said. They were staying in the (shooting) lane. I feel like they blocked a lot of shots from everybody. Just have to make sure to get those through and get some rebounds and stuff.

That's a similar challenge for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are going back-to-back from Game 3 to Game 4 of their series against the Columbus Blue Jackets (8 p.m., NHL Network) and the Vancouver Canucks and Minnesota Wild .

Milwaukee chief demoted over tear-gas use, other concerns – Las Vegas Sun

Published Thursday, Aug. 6, 2020 | 6:58 p.m.

Updated 2 hours, 11 minutes ago

MADISON, Wis. (AP) An oversight board demoted Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales on Thursday after questioning how he handled multiple incidents, including ordering officers to fire tear gas and pepper spray at protesters demonstrating over George Floyds death.

The citys Fire and Police Commission unanimously voted Thursday evening to demote Morales to captain after three-and-a-half years on the job.

The chiefs attorney, Franklyn Gimbel, says Morales relationship with the commission has been deteriorating since he refused the chairmans demand to fire an officer involved in the arrest of Milwaukee Bucks player Sterling Brown in January 2018. Most recently the commission criticized Morales for authorizing tear gas to disperse protesters. The board has also raised questions over how the department has policed Black communities.

Morales joined the Milwaukee department in 1993 and was appointed chief in February 2018.

His conduct is unbecoming, filled with ethical lapses and flawed decisions, making it inconsistent with someone who has the privilege of leading the Milwaukee Police Department, Commissioner Raymond Robakowski said.

The board named Assistant Police Chief Michael J. Brunson Sr. as acting chief.

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said Thursday night he was angered by the commission's action and that Morales should have been given a chance to respond to directives the panel had issued.

The discussion surrounding this decision tonight was completely lacking in transparency. The action taken by the commission tonight was not good government, Barrett said.

The decision comes as Wisconsin's largest police department grapples with a surge in gun violence and plans security for a scaled-down Democratic National Convention.

A number of police chiefs across the country have left their jobs as pressure mounts to rethink American policing following Floyd's death, including Erika Shields in Atlanta, Jamie Resch in Portland, Oregon, and William Smith in Richmond, Virginia.

Milwaukee's mayor had urged the commission to slow down, but Morales' attorney, Franklyn Gimbel, said the odds appeared to be stacked against the chief.

Im unaware of him having any supporters (on the commission), Gimbel, said. There seems like a cumulative sense that they want to dump the guy.

Gimbel declined comment to The Associated Press after the meeting.

Morales is Latino and the majority of the commissioners are Black. His relationship with the board has deteriorated since it named him to the post in February 2018.

Gimbel said problems began when officers arrested Brown for parking illegally in January 2018. Officers swarmed the Bucks guard and used a stun gun on him when he didn't remove his hands from his pockets. The commission's chairman, Steven DeVougas, who is Black, told Morales to fire one of the officers involved but Morales refused, the attorney said.

From there it got stressful," Gimbel said. DeVougas viewed him as not being a team player."

In February, the Milwaukee Police Association, which represents rank-and-file officers, filed an ethics complaint against DeVougas alleging he accompanied a real estate developer during an interview with police who suspected the developer of sexual assault. DeVougas practices real estate law for the developer's business. The police association argued DeVougas' presence during the interview was a misuse of his position as commission chairman. A city ethics board is investigating.

Fast forward to May and June, when Milwaukee police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse protesters demonstrating over Floyd's death. Floyd, who was Black, died on Memorial Day in Minneapolis after a white police officer pressed his knee into his neck for nearly eight minutes.

The decision to use tear gas and pepper spray drew criticism from Democratic Mayor Tom Barrett. The commission in July banned the police department from using tear gas, prompting a number of departments from across the state slated to help with convention security to rescind their support.

The commission on July 20 ordered Morales to produce reams of records related to multiple incidents, including the decision to tear gas and pepper spray protesters, Brown's arrest and the June arrest of a Black activist on suspicion of burglary. The panel also demanded Morales draft community policing standards, develop a discipline matrix to clarify how officers are disciplined and draft a policy requiring officers to wear face masks during the pandemic.

We are in the midst of an urgent overdue reckoning on race and policing in this country," the commission said in a statement Monday. "Only with transparency, accountability and truth will we move on as a society. This discussion may make some uncomfortable, and may bluntly scare others.

None of the commissioners, including DeVougas, returned messages Thursday.

The commission gave Morales a week to respond to some of the requests and threatened to discipline or fire him if he didn't comply. Gimbel has said those expectations are ridiculous; he noted the commission gave Morales' predecessor, Ed Flynn, 50 days to respond to a similar request for information on the department's pursuit policy.

The police department Wednesday blasted the orders as vague, invalid and possibly illegal. The department noted the orders weren't approved during an open meeting and the requests seek information from still-open criminal and internal investigations.

The orders also could violate a 2018 settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union over stop-and-frisk policies because the department would have to release confidential information it has been sharing with a consultant group monitoring compliance with the settlement, the department said.

The (orders) attempt to paint a picture that MPD has been non-compliant or outright insubordinate with the FPC, the department said in a statement. The manner in which business is being conducted at the FPC causes alarm.

Barrett, the mayor, dove into the fray on Wednesday, sending a letter to the commission calling for an orderly review of the orders and the commission to remove DeVougas as chairman since he's under investigation.

Sparks hoping to build momentum against Las Vegas Aces on Friday – OCRegister

Know what the Sparks could really go for right now? A winning streak.

As in, two victories in succession.

The 3-2 Sparks have been playing hopscotch with their record thus far in the WNBA bubble, but thats not a roadmap for long-term success. Their next opportunity to stay on track comes Friday against the 3-2 Las Vegas Aces (6 p.m., ESPN), another talented team with title hopes.

L.A. will be without star forward Nneka Ogwumike, who suffered a slight hamstring injury against Wednesdays victory over Indiana, but they can welcome back Tea Cooper. The rookie point guard wasnt available against the Fever because of an inconclusive coronavirus test that forced her to quarantine for 48 hours while awaiting negative results of two subsequent tests and a physicians approval.

Sparks star Candace Parker was displeased with her teammates inconclusive result and its ramifications, protocol thats been revised in the NBAs bubble so players need not miss as much time if a test comes back inconclusive and they are, in fact, negative for coronavirus.

This has happened a couple times, so at some point we gotta get this together, Parker said, via Zoom. Tea is huge with what we do. Shes coming along great. Shes playing well. So, these are things that can hurt teams, you know?

For me, its about just making sure that were doing the testing the way that we need to, because weve had a couple of inconclusive tests. Obviously somethings gotta change for us to be able to go forward.

Some things have to change on the court as well, the two-time MVP said after Wednesdays less-than-suspenseful victory.

So far weve gone one, and then weve lost focus and lost, and then won and lost and won, said Parker, asked to evaluate her game as she might an NBA player in her role as TNT analyst. So, at some point, Candace has got to step up and lead and string two victories together.

Its worth noting that Candace, the 34-year-old forward, has strung together three consecutive double-doubles, including Wednesdays 18-point, 11-rebound, three-assist, two-block, one-steal effort in 23 minutes of the 86-75 victory.

Pan way back and see that Parkers strung together a feat even more substantial: Twelve-plus seasons as as a Sparks player. Wednesdays game was her 320th in a Sparks uniform, third-most in franchise history.

She surpassed Mwadi Mabika, who played 11 seasons in L.A., and trails only Lisa Leslie (363) and DeLisha Milton (344) for the most games with the franchise.

Boy, it goes fast, said Parker, who has played the entirety of her career for the Sparks, winning a championship in 2016 and averaging 17 points and 8.6 rebounds along the way.

Its an honor to play (in) one jersey my entire career so far, the two-time WNBA MVP said. Huge on loyalty and loyalty goes both ways, so I cant imagine playing for another team. Obviously theres two legends in front of me; Lisa and Delisha that have had a huge influence on my career, at the start and even now.

L.A. is a special place and I dont want to play anywhere else.

Las Vegas Strip workers want mandated testing but it may not help – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Las Vegas resort workers want to see more companies mandate coronavirus testing.

But even at hotel-casinos where testing is required, employees are still contracting the virus.

Testing employees before their return to work has come into question as the states testing system becomes overwhelmed by a spike in cases, causing test results to come back after a week or more and hindering the effectiveness of testing.

In the weeks between (employees) getting the test taken and getting the results, (they) could be exposed to a lot of things, said Brian Labus, a UNLV epidemiologist and member of the governors medical advisory team. Testing all casino employees before their return to work really doesnt do much to protect anybody and would put a huge burden on our overwhelmed testing system. It would do more harm than good at this point.

Harmful or helpful?

Culinary Local 226 and Bartenders Local 165 had proposed state legislation that would mandate free testing for all workers before their return to work and free testing for those who have been exposed to the virus, in addition to a number of other policies. The Adolfo Fernandez bill was named after a Caesars Palace employee who died June 24 from COVID-19.

The bill is expected to be presented at the states second special session of 2020 as part of liability protection legislation.

Workers who make this city run deserve to be protected, Culinary union secretary-treasurer Geoconda Argello-Kline said in a July 20 news release.

Culinary union spokeswoman Bethany Khan said issues with the states testing system havent changed the unions position on employee testing.

COVID-19 testing protects workers, their families, our community, and visitors to Nevada, she said via email. (President Donald) Trump had said in early March that anyone who needs a COVID-19 test would be able get a test whats happening with that?

She also pointed to a July letter from travel leaders stating that the travel industrys recovery relies on more COVID-19 testing.

Greg Chase, founder and CEO of Las Vegas-based Experience Strategy Associates, said testing employees before their return to work, offering continuous testing and transparency from company leaders are all important steps in keeping employees and guests safe.

Its good to have a baseline of knowing workers coming back to work arent ill, he said.

No guarantee

But mandated testing doesnt guarantee workers wont get sick.

Station Casinos, for instance, tested all staffers for COVID-19 before properties June 4 reopening and now tests them regularly. As of July 9, the company had tested and retested more than 2,200 staff members and employees of partners and vendors since reopening.

One Station Casino employee, who was granted anonymity in order to avoid retaliation, received positive COVID-19 test results and shared them with the Review-Journal.

In between ragged breaths over the phone, the employee explained that the reason behind sending an email warning to co-workers was that is where the worker thinks the virus was contracted.

I dont want anyone to experience what I experienced, the employee said.

The Southern Nevada Health District, which has been overwhelmed with cases in Nevada in recent weeks, left a voicemail a few weeks ago instructing the employee to begin contact tracing, but the employee has yet to follow up.

A Station Casinos spokesman declined to provide additional comments.

Not enough tests

A high level of testing is good in theory, but Labus said there simply arent enough tests in Nevada anymore for this to be done efficiently.

In early May, tests were available for anyone in Nevada who wanted one, with results often coming back within a day or two.

That is no longer the case because of a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases in Nevada. Now, test results can take up to a week or longer to return.

Late last month, University Medical Center updated its testing guidance, asking members of the public without COVID-19 symptoms or exposure to a confirmed case of the disease not to make an appointment at its drive-thru testing sites.

UMCs guidance shift is meant to allow high-risk patients to obtain access to testing and results faster.

The Southern Nevada Health District also updated its guidance recently and no longer recommends that employees who tested positive for COVID-19 be tested again. Instead, infected workers who had symptoms can discontinue self-isolation after at least 10 days have passed since the symptoms began and at least 24 hours since their fever broke without the help of fever-reducing medication, and as long as there has been improvement in other symptoms.

The new guidance is in line with the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions instructions, which are based on research that shows that infected people are often no longer infectious after 10 to 20 days, depending on the severity of their illness.

Labus doesnt recommend that all businesses test employees before they return to work, since they could get exposed in the time between taking the test and seeing the results.

It doesnt stop them from being exposed, he said. With weeklong delays, it more provides the illusion of safety than a measure of safety.

Worker safety

A number of hotel workers have told the Review-Journal they would like to see more testing among staff members.

One MGM employee, who works at a pool on the Strip and was granted anonymity for job security, said staffers were surprised when they learned employees wouldnt need to be tested for COVID-19 before returning to work.

The company has offered free testing since before casinos reopened but does not mandate it for the majority of its workforce.

It was pretty shaky going in, the employee said. We were all kind of on edge at the beginning.

Testing is required for MGM employees who exhibit COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact 6 feet or closer for at least 15 minutes with someone who has tested positive. Tests are available both on site at properties and at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The largest private employer in the state, MGM says it is not opposed to return-to-work testing if the system can support it, but the company is trying to maintain a careful balance of not overwhelming the countrys testing resources. It asks employees who dont have reason to believe they have been exposed to the virus to be considerate about getting tested.

MGM spokesman Brian Ahern said the companys decisions, policies and operations have been based on expert guidance and the company continuously evaluates and updates its policies as new information is known, situations change and the needs of the community evolve.

The pool worker voluntarily gets tested about once a week and said results usually take anywhere from one to three days to receive.

MGMs employee testing is made available through a partnership with Community Ambulance and UMC, which allows results in less than 24 hours in many cases, according to the company.

As of Wednesday, the worker said they could confirm four COVID-19 cases among co-workers. MGM Resorts has confirmed that at least one employee has tested positive since casinos reopening.

Policies across the valley

Caesars Entertainment Inc. spokeswoman Chelsea Ryder said the company tested all its active employees in Clark County this month and provides ongoing testing. The company is also following contact tracing protocols, she said.

Testing remains an important component of our health and safety plan, she said. Our safety and testing plans will continue to evolve as the situation with coronavirus changes.

Wynn Resorts Ltd. tested all employees before their return to work and now has a program that randomly tests workers to ensure no department or work area experiences an outbreak, according spokesman Michael Weaver.

We believe our consistent testing program is important to continue to build guests confidence in visiting the resort, as well as support community health safety, he said.

Boyd Gaming Corp. also tested all its staff members before they returned to work. Spokesman David Strow said the company continues to offer no-cost testing as needed.

Las Vegas Sands Corp. spokesman Keith Salwoski said the company tested all employees for COVID-19 before its Las Vegas resorts reopened June 4 and offered complimentary testing to employees household members. Testing was also offered to many third parties, including gondoliers and partner restaurant employees.

The Venetian and Palazzo are also providing ongoing monthly COVID-19 tests for its employees in front-line positions and many third-party employees, and it is the only large resort in Las Vegas to do so, according to Salwoski.

All staff members are offered testing if they report having COVID-19 symptoms or are suspected of having exposure to the virus through contact tracing.

The Review-Journal is owned by the family of Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson. Las Vegas Sands operates The Venetian and Palazzo.

They Held a Hearing So Ted Cruz Could Say ‘Antifa’ a Bunch on C-SPAN – Esquire.com

Chip SomodevillaGetty Images

Our old pal, Senator Tailgunner Ted Cruz, Republican of Texas and, according to the current president* of the United States, son of an accessory to the murder of John F. Kennedy, threw a performance piece in the Senate on Tuesday that seemed designed only to give him a chance to say Antifa on C-SPAN a lot. The hearing was a farce. Senator Mazie Hirono of Hawaii kept trying to get the conversation around to white-supremacist violence in this country, which actually has killed actual people. But the Tailgunner kept wrenching things back around to the monsters from his private id, with hilarious results.

Then came the otherwise unemployable Ken Cuccinelli, Acting Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security:

Officer Underwood was killed by a right-wing Boogaloo maniac and Air Force veteran named Patrick Carillo. Senator Dick Durbin repeatedly tried to get things back to discussing the actual people committing actual political murder, but Cruz was having none of it, so we were treated to the stylings of Andy Ngo, pretending to be a journalist, and Jonathan Turley, pretending to be reasonable while drawing a connection between Antifa and A. Mitchell Palmer, before moving on to the perils of cancel culture, and a closing rendition of the old boogedy-boogedy from Cruz, who got the video he needs. This is to remind you that Congress is on the job.

Right-wing extremists kill 329 people since 1994, antifa have killed none – Business Insider – Business Insider

President Donald Trump has accused far-left groups of inciting riots and violence, but in the last 25 years, no murders in the US have been linked to anti-fascists, while 329 murders have been linked to the far-right, according to new research.

Researchers at a think tank called the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) assembled a database of almost 900 politically motivated plots and attacks in the US since 1994, ending in May 2020, which was reviewed by The Guardian.

The review found that only one person's death in that period was linked to "antifa," a leaderless movement dedicated to combatting right-wing and white supremacist groups, and the person who died was the attacker.

When the review widened its category from antifa to "left-wing violence," it found 21 victims had been killed since 2010, compared to 117 people killed in right-wing violence, in the same time period.Jihadist groups were responsible for 95 people's deaths since 2010.

Seth Jones, a counter-terrorism expert, who helped create the dataset, told The Guardian: "Left-wing violence has not been a major terrorism threat."

He said currently: "The most significant domestic terrorism threat comes from white supremacists, anti-government militias and a handful of individuals associated with the 'boogaloo' movement that are attempting to create a civil war in the United States."

It wasn't just CSIS either. Researchers at the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism, and at the Anti-Defamation League, told The Guardian they did not know of any murders linked to antifa in the US in the last 25 years.

Since the widespread protests began, Trump, senior officials, and Republican lawmakers have attempted to push the theory that antifa has been infiltrating protests to stoke violence. Trump's threatened to designate antifa as a terrorist organization.

The CSIS database was launched as Trump's administration began to repeat Trump's warnings about a possible "left-wing revolution," according to The Guardian.

In a memorandum released by Attorney General William Barr late in June, it states: "We have evidence that anti-government violent extremists including those who support the 'Boogaloo,' those who self-identify as Antifa, and others will pose continuing threats of lawlessness."

It goes on to state that the extremists "may be fortified" by foreign powers who wish to "sow chaos and disorder" in the US.

But there was little proof of any coordinated effort, Business Insider reported in late June.

Paul Barrett, the deputy director of the New York University Stern Centre for Business and Human Rights, told Business Insider's Sonam Sheth that the attempt to frame protests as "a violent leftist conspiracy" bore "all the earmarks of current-day disinformation."

Trump badly miscalculated in Portland and even he knows it – The Guardian

Opponents of Donald Trump often describe him as a political genius who has a cunning understanding of the anxieties and fears of American society, and is able to create and use crises to his favor. The current standoff in Portland shows, yet again, that this is not the case. While his alleged fight against antifa will satisfy some of his far-right supporters, it increasingly risks further alienating the so-called moderate Republicans which seems mostly used to describe better-off pocketbook Republican voters who are already feeling uneasy over his Covid-19 handling and the economic fallout of the pandemic.

An almost ignored aspect of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic is that Trump failed to use it to push through his authoritarian agenda by increasing executive powers, weakening the powers of other institutions, like Congress, and marginalizing dissent, for instance by banning demonstrations. Almost all other countries implemented a more repressive approach to Covid-19, including those governed by progressive parties (like Spain), while most far-right governments used it to push through draconian repressive measures (such as Hungary and India).

Of course, the explanation is that Trump initially denied and ignored the dangers of Covid-19, arguing that its going to work out fine and the warmer weather would take care of it. This made it difficult for him to later shift to an authoritarian approach. Difficult, but certainly not impossible. But clearly Trump never wanted to. Instead, he kept insisting on an economic approach to re-election, repositioning himself as the savior of the US economy, and aggressively pushing for the reopening of America.

A second opportunity to push through an authoritarian agenda came with the Black Lives Matter protests in the wake of the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and Breonna Taylor this spring. Trumps response was as expected, playing to the broader Republican electorates racialized fears about chaos and rioting. In the 15 days between Floyds murder and funeral, Trump tweeted 195 times about unrest, law enforcement and the threat of military use.

But rather than prioritizing the race card, his natural response, Trump quite quickly redefined the Black Lives Matter protests as antifa protests. This redefinition was in line with two longer-term processes within the Trump camp. First, Trump seems to truly believe that he has a shot at significantly increasing his support among African Americans. For instance, he has long boasted that his administration has done more for the Black Community than any President since Abraham Lincoln. (Needless to say this is not true.)

Second, antifa has become a popular bogeyman within the broader conservative movement, at least since the provocative campus visits of (former) rightwing darlings like Milo Yiannopoulos in the early days of the Trump presidency. The altercations between far-right and Antifa activists, blown out of proportion by mainstream media, were happily incorporated into rightwing propaganda, and Antifa became a favorite topic of many of the presidents favorite shows on Fox News.

Trump became increasingly obsessed with antifa. He also spread conspiracy theories about antifa, parroting far-right media like his new favorite television channel, One America News Network (OANN) as well as far-right social media accounts. He even tweeted his intention to designate ANTIFA as a terrorist organization, an almost certainly unconstitutional move.

Strengthened by the information from his rightwing bubble, the Portland protests must have looked like a golden opportunity to him. Portland has long been one of the main symbols of leftwing politics in the US its viewed positively by progressives, despite slightly mocking programs like Portlandia, and negatively by the right wing.

But the problem is that the Portland protests play only to one of Trumps ideological strongholds: authoritarianism. Given that Portland is the whitest big city in the US, the vast majority of protesters are white, which leaves his biggest asset, racism, largely irrelevant. Similarly, populism is largely useless, as few people will believe that the elite live in, or deeply care for, Portland unlike, for instance, New York.

Portland is not only a bad choice because of the limited appeal to the broader Republican electorate. It could also seriously backfire. Police brutality against small, and even radical, groups of protesters could lead to broader support for the protesters.

This happened, for instance, at the Euromaidan protests in Ukraine in 2013-14, and it seems to be happening now in Portland too. As Trumps little green men are picking up peaceful protesters from the streets, without adequate identification and in unmarked cars, the discussion is moving away from the alleged violence by antifa to the threat to US democracy posed by the Trump administration.

The redefinition of the protests goes hand in hand with the diversification of the protesters. No longer are the protesters just young, white anarchists who can count on little particular sympathy outside of small progressive circles; now stalwarts of Americas conservative society are represented too: mothers and veterans. And they are arrested, beaten and teargassed too.

In a society as deeply militarized and patriarchal as America, vets and mothers are powerful symbols of the existing order. Seeing them protest against the government, and particularly a dubious and unnecessarily violent paramilitary unit, is a publicity problem for the Trump administration. These are the salt of the earth of the Republican electorate, who will not automatically assume these groups are in the wrong. Moreover, many Republicans will have much less tolerance for disproportionate repression to white moms and vets than they sadly have towards African Americans and white leftwing youths.

In short, Trumps decision to unleash authoritarianism in Portland was a poor one. Having ignored much better opportunities like Covid-19 and the Black Lives Matter protests, he is caught in a confrontation that enthuses only a part of his base and increasingly worries the broader Republican electorate. And as the public image of the Portland protester is more and more reflecting some stalwarts of American society, and therefore the Republican electorate, Trump might be increasingly fighting himself.

The fact that the federal police are now being withdrawn from Portland shows that even Trump has realized his mistake.

Cas Mudde is the Stanley Wade Shelton UGAF professor of international affairs at the University of Georgia, the author of The Far Right Today (2019), and host of the new podcast Radikaal

Asbestos tragedy of worker covered in dust – This Is Lancashire

AN ENGINEER spent his working life surrounded by deadly asbestos, often with no protective equipment, an inquest has heard.

Roy Gee-Clough died at home on May 6 from mesothelioma, a cancer of the lungs caused by inhaling asbestos fibres.

Assistant coroner Catherine Cundy was told how, before his death, 77-year-old Mr Gee-Clough had made a statement outlining his working conditions at the British Rail Loco Works and then BAe Systems, where the air was sometimes so thick with a material containing asbestos that work had to stop.

Mr Gee-Clough, a married father, told how he began working at the Horwich Loco Works as a 14-year-old office boy in 1957, delivering post to all the departments, before beginning his five year apprenticeship and working in the erecting shop where he had the job of lagging boilers with asbestos mattresses.

"During that job dust was created and it covered his boiler suit," said Ms Cundy. "The air was generally thick with asbestos dust. There were no masks or protection provided."

In 1964 he moved to British Aerospace at Lostock where he spent the rest of his career making components for missiles.

In his early 30s he was given the task of machining a component for the Sea Slug missile, which involved using Dursetos, an asbestos sheet material.

"He says there was a phenomenal amount of dust which came off the machines that was processing the Durestos and every so often it was too much to cope with and so the work would have to stop for a while while things cleared," said Ms Cundy.

A colleague working next to Mr Gee-Clough died from mesothelioma but he remained apparently healthy after retiring, aged 48, when he was made redundant.

He and his wife Gillian divided their time between their homes in Spain and Stocks Park Drive, Horwich and his step-daughter, Deborah Arstall, described how he was artistic and a keen walker.

But in June 2018, before he and his wife were due to head back to Spain, he paid a visit to the doctor after noticing a shortness of breath.

Mesothelioma, which can take 30 or more years to show symptoms, was diagnosed and Mr Gee-Clough underwent several courses of chemotherapy and palliative radiotheraphy before his condition deteriorated in Spring this year and he died.

Ms Cundy recorded a conclusion that Mr Gee-Clough died as a result of industrial disease. None of his family were at the inquest so she asked that her condolences be passed to them.

Restoring a Vintage Camper? Beware of These Hazards – GearJunkie

Restoring a vintage camper can be a great DIY project and a good way to own an off-grid vehicle on a budget. But beware of these hazards when restoring a camper trailer.

As more people begin to camp and fall in love with affordable, easygoing outdoor vacations, many will upgrade from tent camping to a travel trailer. However, when they see the price tag of a brand new trailer, its likely theyll look to cost-effective alternatives such as restoring a vintage camper.

There are a plethora of resources out there for restoring an old travel trailer. However, these do-it-yourself guides overlook some of the hazards that come with vintage camper restoration projects.

Things such as carbon monoxide, asbestos, and water damage can pose serious health risks if not dealt with properly. Its important to know some of the most dangerous hazards before one dives into a restoration. Cutting corners is never worth risking the safety and health of yourself and those around you.

One of the most common hazards in campers is carbon monoxide (CO). Although this may not be an issue during the restoration process, it can be deadly while camping. Each year, at least 500 people die of carbon monoxide poisoning in RVs and campers.

Some signs of CO poisoning include dizziness, nausea, intense headache, confusion, and sleepiness. When you undertake a restoration project, its paramount to ensure that CO-emitting appliances are properly functional.

The most common cause of CO poisoning in campers derives from equipment failure. Usually, exhaust from a campers generator that leaks into the living quarters is the culprit.

Thoroughly inspect any exhaust pipes. If broken, repair them before use. If the generator is housed in a storage compartment, its imperative there are no leaks into the living quarters. Campers should avoid generator use while asleep, if possible.

Another cause of CO poisoning can come from the exhaust of nearby vehicles. While camping in close quarters, this poses even more of a risk. Never allow vehicles to idle unattended, especially if you plan to remain inside your camper.

One other common source of CO gas build up in campers and RVs is propane gas appliances that are unvented or faulty. A buildup of liquid propane (LP) gas poses a risk not only for CO poisoning but also a risk of explosion.

Propane lines can easily succumb to dry rot when stored for long periods of time and not inspected, especially on vintage trailers and RVs that have not been used for several years. LP gas is heavier than air and will sink as low as it can. That means that tanks stored inside the camper or RV there should always have a vent at the lowest point.

Its pertinent to make sure all CO-emitting equipment is up to date when you restore your vintage trailer. Not only during the restoration process is this important, but one should have propane systems, generators, and appliances inspected annually by a certified RV technician.

Regularly replacing old propane and CO detectors is beneficial in avoiding CO poisoning as well. Always make sure they are functional and install them in the proper places. Because propane is heavier than air, the detector should be installed at the baseboard level. Carbon monoxide detectors are often paired with smoke detectors, which you should also have in your camper.

One of the best parts of buying a vintage camper or RV to restore is the ability to completely redo the interior. You cant go out and buy a brand-new travel trailer with a customized interior without spending a fortune. By gutting and redoing the interior of a vintage camper, the options are endless. However, removing old parts and pieces comes with its own dangers. Restorers should be prepared to protect themselves against exposure to harmful substances and know what to look for.

Before asbestos was partly banned in the United States in the 1980s, it was used in many building products. Asbestos is a group of silicate minerals that can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. When breaking up tile, asbestos can easily become trapped in the abdomen if inhaled or ingested and lead to the development of peritoneal mesothelioma. With mesothelioma usually having a life expectancy of 12-21 months after diagnosis, exposure to asbestos is nothing to take lightly.

Typically, you will remove the floor and any old tile when restoring a camper. Old vinyl tile often becomes worn and dull after years of use. Both the tile and adhesive could contain asbestos if the camper is older than 1980.

Asbestos could also be present in loose-fill insulation. Although batt-style insulation is most common in campers, take precautions against inhaling this material.

If your vintage camper is large enough to be equipped with drum brakes, take care if you perform a brake job yourself. Brake pads and shoes often contained asbestos because of its incredible heat resistance and strength.

To mitigate your risk of inhaling or ingesting asbestos, one should wear a high-quality organic respirator and Tyvek suit during the demolition phase. Its also important to double bag asbestos-containing products in a minimum of 6mm plastic. Before leaving the worksite, remove the Tyvek suit. Immediately wash clothing that was worn, and shower to reduce the chances of asbestos fibers embedding themselves into furniture or other household items.

Another important part of any restoration project is inspecting for water damage. Travel trailers, both vintage and brand new, are known for springing leaks. Even the smallest leak can result in an immense amount of damage to the structure of the camper. If left unrepaired, this could cause the camper to collapse in on itself.

Possibly more dangerous is the presence of mold. Mold loves moisture, and if water has penetrated the camper shell, you can be certain mold wont be far behind.

Once youve torn out the walls and old insulation in your camper, carefully inspect the wood framing for damage. If any soft spots, black spots, or wet spots are present, you will need to repair them. You can do so by removing the old framing and replacing it with new material. You can sister the new framing to any old framing that hasnt succumbed to damage.

However, you should remain cautious to make sure the new framing is strong and structurally sound. If youre not sure how to do so, its important to seek professional help in reframing your camper.

You can remediate mold in a multitude of ways. The first step is to discard any porous material with mold such as cloth or carpet. You can attempt to get rid of mold with white vinegar, but often bleach and soapy water will be the best solution. If the mold is resilient to these treatments on wood framing or interior features, they may need to be removed entirely.

If mold is present, it will certainly need to be dealt with. By allowing mold to grow, you risk serious health side effects. Mold can cause wheezing, coughing, and itchy eyes. With prolonged exposure, mold can also cause more severe chronic lung illnesses from infection.

Now that you have your vintage camper clean from harmful toxins, customized, and freshly painted, its finally time to take it out on the road. Once you have your camper, it will be hard to not want to take it out right away. However, getting out for a weekend at camp isnt worth the risk of lifelong or life-ending hazards that should be dealt with first.

A vintage camper should be something that fills you with nostalgia and joy not itchy eyes and wheezing. Take the time to restore your vintage camper safely and properly so you can enjoy it for years to come.

Restoring a Vintage Camper? Beware of These Hazards - GearJunkie

What is the "alt-left" Trump was talking about? – CBS News

President Trump on Tuesday said "there is another side" to the violence in Charlottesville, specifically calling out the "alt-left."

"What about the alt-left that came charging at, what you say, the alt-right?" Mr. Trump asked. "Do they have any semblence of guilt? What about the fact they charging with clubs in their hands, swinging clubs, do they have any problem? I think they do."

What is the "alt-left"? Let's start with the basics.

It's the group Mr. Trump is partly blaming for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia over the weekend. Except it's not really a group, and more of just an epithet that's gained currency in some conservative and liberal circles to describe leftists, particularly "Antifa" groups that sometimes skirmish with right-wing demonstrators.

The term "alt-right" was coined by the white supremacist Richard Spencer, who used it to describe people like himself. The alt-right is a loosely defined movement that rejects traditional conservatism and typically embraces a white supremacist viewpoint.

It is usually used to encompass far-right activists who reject the idea of racial egalitarianism and equality of the sexes. Some alt-right adherents, such as Spencer, also hope for the dissolution of the United States and the creation of an "ethnostate" for non-Jewish people of European heritage.

Mr. Trump's chief strategist Steve Bannon once said that the news website he used to run, Breitbart, was "the platform for the alt-right." But that was before internal disagreements within the alt-right created what some adherents call the "alt-light," which is less extreme in its views and tends to distance itself from the outright white supremacy of people like Spencer and David Duke, a former KKK leader. Both Spencer and Duke were present at the Charlottesville protests.

The alt-left, meanwhile, is a purely pejorative description. Few, if any, people on the left claim to be part of anything called the alt-left, as the term was created in an attempt to demean leftists and imply they are morally equivalent to the alt-right.

It grew out of the conservative media. In particular, Fox News host Sean Hannity, an outspoken supporter of Mr. Trump, frequently references the alt-left on Twitter.

In a November appearance on Hannity's show, former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said the alt-left think Trump voters "are misogynists and misanthropes and negative people."

But conservatives aren't the only ones talking about the alt-left. Some liberal commentators have employed the term as well when writing about left-wing activists and politicians. For example, an April article in New York magazine identified Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, French politician Jean-Luc Melenchon,, and British Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn as "evidence of an active contemporary 'alt-left.'"

Liberals and conservatives tend to use "alt-left" somewhat differently, however. Hannity will often use the term to describe mainstream liberals, while liberals sometimes use it to describe socialists, social democrats, and other far-left groups.

The people who arrived to protest white supremacists at the rally were mostly clergy, students, and residents of Charlottesville, according to CBS News' Paula Reid. And the vast majority of them were unarmed, despite Mr. Trump's claims to the contrary.

While there were some Antifa protesters with batons, but they were vastly outnumbered by armed white supremacists. The white supremacists committed the worst acts of violence at the rally, including one who appeared to deliberately plow into counter-protesters with a car, killing one woman.

Is There an ‘Alt-Left’? – Snopes.com

On 15 August 2017, as President Trumpdoubled downon his earlier position that the violence at a neo-Nazi rally in Virginia that left a woman dead was the fault of both sides, he used a term that has only recently come into existence: the alt-left.

Responding to a question about calls to condemn the movement known as the alt-right, Trump responded, What about the alt-left that came charging at, as you say, at the alt-right?

So what, exactly, is the alt-left? Unlike the term alt-right, which was created by members of an ideology by its supporters(in order to make more palatable to the mainstream what had previously been considered radical views),the term alt-left appears primarily in social media and news reports as a term leveled against an inconsistently defined group of people with liberal ideologies in an effort to imply a parallel of extremism on both sides.

Use of the term alt-left gained ground quickly online (according to Google Trends charts) when conservative Fox News host Sean Hannityused the term in adebatewith BuzzFeed writer Rosie Gray over media coverage of the so-called alt-right. Searches for the term spiked again directly after Trump used it in his 14 August 2017 press conference:

It is unclear if Hannity himself coined the term, but we could not find widespread use of the term on reddit or4chan, a web form popular with the alt-right, prior to his 22 November 2016 use of it.

There was prior to Hannitys use of the term a web site founded in 2015 (AltLeft.com) that espouses a philosophy that it describes as the left of the AltRight. It presents a philosophy ideologically closer to the actual alt-right than the leftists with which the alt-right stands in opposition, based on an archivedversionof the site:

The AltLeft exists in that small space where Ralph Nader and Pat Buchanan begin to meet. Its that point in time where Mussolini ditched marxism and moved toward fascism. The question is, can the AltLeft be divorced from political correctness and white ethnomasochism?

This appears to be a small group, and is most likely not what Trump meant by the alt-left.

This does not mean that people who could be considered left-leaning do not use the term. For example, James Wolcott, a cultural critic for Vanity Fair, argued in March 2017that the alt-left provides a mirror image distortion: the same loathing of Clinton, rejection of identity politics, and itch for a reckoning. Here, as in nearly all of its other uses, however, it is a term leveled against a group from which the writer is separate. Washington Post reporter Aaron Blake articulated this in a 1 December 2016 story:

The difference between alt-right and alt-left is that one of them was coined by the people who comprise the movement and whose movement is clearly ascendant; the other was coined by its opponents and doesnt actually have any subscribers.

This differs substantially from the derivation of the term alt-right, which was either invented or co-invented by white nationalist Richard Spencer. The term found a home on the internet in 2010 when Spencer founded the blog AlternativeRight.com. Though heterogeneous, the alt-right broadly represents a collection of far-right ideologies that primarily object to multiculturalism and support racially-based policies that explicitly and implicitly serve to benefit white people.

Put more simply, the term alt-right does refer to an actual movement, while the term alt-left is primarily a rhetorical device used either to imply an equivalency between radicals on the left and on the right or for left-leaning moderates to criticize those those who they see as spoilers.

However, now that the president has used the term, those with an interest in undermining the left or antifa groups (anti-fascist protestors) will likely push its use. Days after Trumps press conference, a reddit user created the forum /Alt_Left_Violence/ (which has no posts as of press time). Users of the 4Chan /pol/ forum, from which many dubious political blogs are sourced, have already promoted the term:

THE PRESIDENT HAS GIVEN US A LABEL TO USE

NOW IS OUR CHANCE, DON WENT UP TO BAT FOR US AND IS TAKING HITS FOR US, DONT LET IT GO TO WASTE

REDPILL THE NORMIES ON THE ALT-LEFT

THEY ARE COMPARING THE ALT-LEFT TO WWII VETS

SHOW THEM THE TRUE FACE OF THE ALT-LEFT

IM TAKLING ANTIFA RIOTS, VIOLENT ATTACKS ON INNOCENT PEOPLE, THE WHOLE KIT AND CABOODLE

FIRE UP YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA SOCK PUPPETS, SEARCH FOR THE TERM ALT-LEFT

LOOK FOR POSTS COMPARING THEM TO WWII VETS

THEN REDPILL THE NORMALFAGS

The term will likely continue to be a moving target, depending on who the person using it is seeking to discredit, and thus cannot yet be accurately defined.

In fact, less than an hour after we originally posted this article, alt-right social media figure Mike Cernovich demonstrated its lack of meaning better than we ever could have in a tweet blaming a 17 August 2017 terrorist attack in Spain on the alt-left and conflating leftists with radical Islamic terrorists two groups that have absolutely nothing in common:

Alt-Right, Alt-Left, Antifa: A Glossary of Extremist …

President Trump angrily denounced the so-called alt-left at a news conference on Tuesday, claiming that the group attacked followers of the so-called alt-right at a white supremacist rally that exploded into deadly violence in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday.

What about the alt-left that came charging at the, as you say, the alt-right? Do they have any semblance of guilt? he asked. There was blame on both sides, he said. I have no doubt about it.

Both phrases are part of a broad lexicon of far-right terminology that has become important to understanding American politics during the Trump administration. Many of these terms have their roots in movements that are racist, anti-Semitic and sexist.

Here is a brief guide to the meaning of those expressions and others used by white supremacists and far-right extremists.

The alt-right is a racist, far-right movement based on an ideology of white nationalism and anti-Semitism. Many news organizations do not use the term, preferring terms like white nationalism and far right.

The movements self-professed goal is the creation of a white state and the destruction of leftism, which it calls an ideology of death. Richard B. Spencer, a leader in the movement, has described the movement as identity politics for white people.

It is also anti-immigrant, anti-feminist and opposed to homosexuality and gay and transgender rights. It is highly decentralized but has a wide online presence, where its ideology is spread via racist or sexist memes with a satirical edge.

It believes that higher education is only appropriate for a cognitive elite and that most citizens should be educated in trade schools or apprenticeships.

Researchers who study extremist groups in the United States say there is no such thing as the alt-left. Mark Pitcavage, an analyst at the Anti-Defamation League, said the word had been made up to create a false equivalence between the far right and anything vaguely left-seeming that they didnt like.

Some centrist liberals have taken to using this term.

It did not arise organically, and it refers to no actual group or movement or network, Mr. Pitcavage said in an email. Its just a made-up epithet, similar to certain people calling any news they dont like fake news.

On Tuesday, Mr. Trump said the alt-left was partly to blame for the Charlottesville violence, during which a counterprotester, Heather D. Heyer, was killed.

The alt-light comprises members of the far right who once fell under the alt-right umbrella but have since split from the group because, by and large, racism and anti-Semitism are not central to its far-right nationalist views, according to Ryan Lenz, the editor of Hatewatch, a publication of the Southern Poverty Law Center. Members of the alt-right mocked these dissidents as the alt-light.

The alt-light is the alt-right without the racist overtones, but it is hard to differentiate it sometimes because youre looking at people who sometimes dance between both camps, he said.

The two groups often feud online over the Jewish Question, or whether Jews profit by secretly manipulating the government and the news media.

Antifa is a contraction of the word anti-fascist. It was coined in Germany in the 1960s and 1970s by a network of groups that spread across Europe to confront right-wing extremists, according to Mr. Pitcavage. A similar movement was seen in the 1980s in the United States and has re-emerged recently as the alt-right has risen to prominence.

For some so-called antifa members, the goal is to physically confront white supremacists. If they can get at them, to assault them and engage in street fighting, Mr. Pitcavage said. Mr. Lenz, at the Southern Poverty Law Center, called the group an old left-wing extremist movement.

Members of the alt-right broadly portray protesters who oppose them as antifa, or the alt-left, and say they bear some responsibility for any violence that ensues a claim made by Mr. Trump on Tuesday.

But analysts said comparing antifa with neo-Nazi or white supremacist protesters was a false equivalence.

Cuck is an insult used by the alt-right to attack the masculinity of an opponent, originally other conservatives, whom the movement deemed insufficiently committed to racism and anti-Semitism.

It is short for cuckold, a word dating back to the Middle Ages that describes a man who knows his wife is sleeping with other men and does not object. Mr. Lenz said the use of the word by the alt-right often had racial overtones.

S.J.W. is short for social justice warrior and is used by the right as an epithet for someone who advocates liberal causes like feminism, racial justice or gay and transgender rights. It is also sometimes used to imply that a persons online advocacy of a cause is insincere or done for appearances. It became widely used during GamerGate, a controversy that began in 2014 over sexism in video game subcultures.

Mr. Lenz, whose organization has specific criteria for which groups it classifies as Nazi organizations, said the right used the phrase to rhetorically address the fact that the left sometimes calls anyone who disagrees with it Nazis. He said the alt-right had created the term so its followers had a similar blanket term to deride the left.

Video taken at the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville on Saturday showed marchers chanting blood and soil. The phrase is a 19th-century German nationalist term that connotes a mystical bond between the blood of an ethnic group and the soil of their country.

It was used as a Nazi slogan in Germany during the 1930s and 1940s and since then has been transported to neo-Nazi groups and other white supremacists around the world, Mr. Pitcavage said. It is one of several Nazi symbols that have been adopted as a slogan by some members of the alt-right.

Globalism is sometimes used as a synonym for globalization, the network of economic interconnection that became the dominant international system after the Cold War. The word has become more commonly used since Mr. Trump railed against globalism frequently on the campaign trail.

For the far right, globalism has long had distinct xenophobic, anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic overtones. It refers to a conspiratorial worldview: a cabal that likes open borders, diversity and weak nation states, and that dislikes white people, Christianity and the traditional culture of their own country.

White genocide is a white nationalist belief that white people, as a race, are endangered and face extinction as a result of nonwhite immigration and marriage between the races, a process being manipulated by Jews, according to Mr. Lenz. It is the underlying concept behind far-right, anti-immigration arguments, especially those aimed at immigrants who are not white Christians.

The concept was popularized by Bob Whitaker, a former economics professor and Reagan appointee to the Office of Personnel Management, who wrote a 221-word mantra on the subject that ended with the rallying cry: Anti-racist is code word for anti-white.

Mr. Pitcavage said the concept of white genocide was often communicated online through a white supremacist saying called the Fourteen Words: We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.

The saying was created by David Lane, a white supremacist sentenced to 190 years in prison in connection with the 1984 murder of the Jewish radio host Alan Berg.

Antifa Berkeley: Why the ‘Alt-Left’ Is a Problem | Time

Donald Trumps challenge on August 15 what about the alt-left has stirred silly arguments. Claiming there is no alt-left because no one calls themselves alt-left, ignores the long, colorful history of political nicknaming. And claiming there is no alt-left because all leftists hate Neo-Nazis mistakenly defines the alt- modifier as being about racism not fanaticism. With 100 goons from the Left having attacked peaceful demonstrators from the Right as recently as this Sunday afternoon in Berkeley, we must stop viewing the growing epidemic of political brutality through myopic, partisan lenses. The real question remains: Is alt-left a useful term?

You can repudiate racism unequivocally, yet still recognize an alt-left in America today. The term emphasizes a new breed of extremist virtual, vitriolic and violent without getting tangled in the rights or wrongs of being anti-Trump, against police violence or bigoted. Similarly, in the 1930s and 1940s, when Americans condemned Communism and Nazism for being totalitarian, they werent accusing Communists of murdering Jews like the Nazis did.

Moreover, believing that in order to exist, the alt-left must call itself alt-left neuters the power of political nicknaming. In the 1950s, the liberal Washington Post cartoonist, Herblock Herbert Block coined the term McCarthyism to demean right-wing anti-Communists. More recently, Politically Correct, RINO (Republican in Name Only), Snowflake, Libtard, and Cuckservative, were imposed by opponents.

Two centuries ago, the British essayist Isaac DIsraeli called political nicknaming one of the arts practiced by all political parties. DIsraeli noticed that sometimes, politicos hijacked a contemptuous name, making it their own: The first revolutionists of Holland known as Les Gueux or the Beggars accepted the name as much in defiance as with indignation, and acted up to it.

Although the label alt-right originated with alt-rightists, Hillary Clinton mainstreamed use of the term. In a sweeping attack a year ago, Clinton condemned Trump as representing the paranoid fringe in our politics, steeped in racial resentment. Introducing an unfamiliar term, she explained: Alt-right is short for alternative right. She failed to connect the growing familiarity with the word alt to the computer keyboard. She quoted the Wall Street Journals description of this loosely organized movement, mostly online, that rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity.

Clintons analysis proves why alt-left is a useful term. The alt-left is also a paranoid fringe steeped in resentment, and some of the resentment is racial, although moral, in that it is resisting racism. It too is loosely organized, mostly online, wallowing as the alt-right does in Internet-fueled hysteria and harshness. It too rejects mainstream ideology, in this case, liberalism. And it is broader than Antifa, the violent anti-Fascist fringe that combats neo-Nazis and the KKK.

The alt-left designation helps explain the Democrats emerging civil war, with extremists assailing centrist liberals, and turning the word neoliberal into one of their overused epithets. It exposes the postmodern fanatics: bullies who violate liberal principles by shutting up speakers they dislike; brats who riot in Berkeley, Portland, Oakland and elsewhere when they dont get their way; hypocrites who denounce their opponents unreason and violence yet cant see their own; and brutes who whip each other into vulgar frenzies on the Internet. The alt-left is populated by ideologues who reject the American value of compromise. They see a world of conspiracy theories, imagined enemies and exaggerated slights. Ironically, they echo their far right rivals by demonizing Wall Street, the Big Banks, the Mainstream Media and, frequently, Jews or Zionists. Both far right and far left radicals represent a politics of backlash and lashing out, not consensus-building or reaching out.

Neither Left nor Right has a monopoly on virtue or violence. The alt-left continues the violence of the Weatherman and the Black Panthers in the 1970s, and the hooliganism of the Battle of Seattle WTO Protestors in 1999. And like the alt-right, leftwing radicals are finding ideological allies worldwide, particular among Jeremy Corbyns Labourites; these British leftists also prefer dictating the outcomes they seek instead of trusting democratic processes to work.

Yes, calling radicals the alt-left is mischievous, tarring those fanatics with their ideological rivals brush. But as Communists and Fascists showed, the political world is round. If you go too far left or right, you meet in the anti-democratic land of intolerance and violence.

Migrant crossings ‘unacceptably high’ as UK asks France to be tougher – Sky News

French officials have been urged to take a tougher stance on migrants, after a record week of Channel crossings.

Some 96 people were intercepted in the Channel on Friday - a day after a record 202 migrants made the journey.

The previous daily record for migrant crossings was on 13 July, when 180 successfully landed in the UK.

Immigration compliance minister Chris Philp wants France to be stronger at stopping the boats at sea and directing them back to the shore before they reach the Kent coast.

French authorities have stopped thousands of crossings this year, the government acknowledged, before adding that more could be done.

Mr Philp said: "The number of illegal small boat crossings we are seeing from France is unacceptably high.

"And migrants continue to arrive in Calais to make the crossing.

"The French have to take tougher action.

"We need stronger enforcement measures, including interceptions at sea and direct return of boats.

"The French have heard that directly from the home secretary and we will continue to work with them until the situation changes.

"We will also continue to go after the criminals who facilitate these crossings and return the migrants who come to the UK in this way."

:: Listen to the Daily podcast on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Spreaker

In July, more than 1,000 migrants managed to cross into the UK, according to analysis by the PA news agency.

The Home Office launched an attack on "activist lawyers" on Friday, who it claims are thwarting efforts to send migrants back to France.

It referred to "vexatious" claims that are stopping the government and its attempts to remove the migrants from the UK; however, it would not reveal how many migrants remained in the country.

Human rights charities branded the comments as "bully boy tactics".

Minnie Rahman, public affairs and campaigns manager at the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, said: "Those being forced to make desperate journeys across the Channel are doing so because they simply have no other options and become reliant on those willing to exploit them."

Call for UK treaty with France on migrant crossings to avoid ‘crisis’ numbers – expressandstar.com

A failure by the UK to reach a new agreement with France on how to deal with migrant crossings could lead to numbers reaching crisis levels, an ex-Border Force chief has warned.

It comes after a record number of crossings to Britain in a single day last week, and followsa Government minister branding the number of incidents unacceptably high.

Tony Smith, the former head of UK Border Force said the UK and France need to agree a treaty with a joint patrol whereby migrants picked up in the Channel can be returned to France to have asylum claims considered there.

He told the PA news agency: What Im advocating is that we need to try as best we can to replicate the juxtaposed controls for legitimate applicants in the same way as for illegitimate applicants.

If they want to come to the UK they need to make their case on the French side, and if they are found in the waterways or even make it as far as Dover we say Im sorry but you go back there and thats where you will be interviewed and processed, on the French side.

Last month Home Secretary Priti Patel sought to level blame at her French counterparts, telling the Commons Home Affairs Committee of the unacceptable numbers of people making the perilous journey in small boats.

On Saturday Immigration compliance minister Chris Philp called on France to be stronger on intercepting vessels at sea and directing the return of boats which are trying to get to the UK.

At least 202 migrants managed to cross to Britain on Thursday in a surge of 20 boats, a single-day record.

Asked how hopeful he is of the Home Office being able to reach a new deal with France, Mr Smith said: I wouldnt like to call it as to whether or not they can make the breakthrough.

All I would say is weve done it before and the numbers then were far greater.

I think there are potentially opportunities but there will have to be some kind of a quid pro quo which would satisfy the French that this was a measure that was designed to help both parties, not just a one-way street where the UK essentially is able to blockade anybody coming over from France.

He said the current approach is putting peoples lives at risk and fuelling the smuggling supply chains.

The number of migrants in small boats intercepted by Border Force on Friday fell to 96, but Mr Smith said if daily numbers were to continue in the high hundreds youre going to start getting up to the numbers that actually were indeed a crisis almost 20 years ago.

He added: I do worry that if we cant get a new agreement with the French on returns were not going to be able to stop this and we could see numbers of the scale of which weve seen in years gone by.
