Arconic, ATI struggle with sales in the aerospace industry – Pittsburgh Business Times

As manufacturers report recoveries from Covid-19 impact in sight for many end markets in their second quarter 2020 financial results, outlook for the aerospace industry remains dim.

Pittsburgh-based Arconic Corp. reported second quarter sales of $1.2 billion, down 38% year over year, during the companys quarterly earnings call Tuesday. The company also reported a net loss of $92 million in the second quarter, compared to a net income of $5 million in the second quarter of 2019.

Pittsburgh-based Allegheny Technologies Inc. saw $770 million in sales in the second quarter of 2020, down from $1.1 billion in sales in the second quarter of 2019. The company also reported a net loss of $422 million, during its second quarter earning call Tuesday.

When it comes to aerospace specifically, Arconic saw sales drop 26% year over year, due to both the continued grounding of Boeings 737 MAX planes and a sharp decrease in demand due to Covid-19. ATI, for similar reasons, saw its high-performance materials and components segment sales drop 44% in the quarter and sales to the commercial aerospace market in particular drop 50%.

I think its really going to be somewhere well into 2021 before it improves, George Ferguson, Bloomberg analyst who follows the aerospace industry, said. We are still in the midst of a slow down for new builds I think this year is going to be really rough, because airlines are still in rough shape financially, and the travel recovery slowed down recently because of the outbreaks of coronavirus in the south of the U.S. and the west of the U.S. and now in Spain.

Boeing, which reported its second quarter results last week, had planned to get its 737 Max planes, grounded after two deadly crashes in recent years, back up to a production level of 31 planes per month for a good portion of 2021. However, the company already pushed that back, saying it would aim to get to that 31 number by the end of 2021, Ferguson said.

We could not have picked a more interesting or more challenging time to start our journey as an independent company, Arconic CEO Tim Myers, said, regarding the companys split from Arconic Inc. into Arconic Corp. and Howmet Aerospace in April.

Myers said he expects a roughly 50% drop in aerospace sales year over year for Arconics second half of 2020. ATI CEO Robert Wetherbee said he also expects the negative impact to last for a few more quarters due to the significant decline in aerospace end markets, especially for the air frame part of its business.

On the air frame side, because of the length of that supply chain, it has taken longer to understand when is the Max coming back and what are the implications of Covid on long term airplane deliveries, Wetherbee said, during the call Tuesday. It will be a quicker down and up for engines and slower down and up on the frames.

Arconic also had a tough quarter for ground transportation, reporting a 57% revenue decline year over year due primarily to halted production of automotive manufacturers. However, the company anticipates the second half of 2020 to approach the run rates it saw in the second half of 2019.

I just think ground transportation, they are not as affected by the coronavirus as the airplane business is because everyone is scared of being stuck in a tube in the sky with a bunch of people whos health conditions they dont know, Ferguson said.

Looking ahead, the companies aim to remain nimble in case a Covid-19 vaccine or treatment jumpstarts recovery in the aerospace industry.

[A vaccine] would give a lot of impetus to increase air travel which would lead to improvement on that side, Wetherbee said. We feel well positioned for the new builds. One thing we have seen across the aerospace industry is that the airlines are retiring the old stuff, which would position us well for faster recovery with a vaccine.

Why Mega-Cap Defense Stocks May Be the Best Idea for the Rest of 2020 – 24/7 Wall St.

Aerospace & Defense

August 7, 2020 7:26 am

Last Updated: August 7, 2020 11:16 am

Technology has swept investors up over the past few years. With the mega-caps all posting solid results last week, many investors are looking for somewhere to move capital. While tech will continue to roll, the same may not be said for the rebound in the economy. The extra unemployment benefits have run out, it will be a while before another round of stimulus checks gets to citizens and uncertainty remains the one constant.

A new RBC research report from Michael Eisen and the aerospace and defense team says what many experienced investors are well aware of: the outlook forward remains positive because defense especially will get funded by the government. The report noted this about the sectors underperformance over the past three months:

Defense exposure continues to provide a more stable fundamental backdrop. Investor concerns regarding the outlook for defense budgets has weighed on the sectors valuation, which we think has been overstated. The group has appreciated on average by 4% over the past 3 months, vs. +16% for the S&P 500. Earnings results from the Defense contractors have all held in much better than feared, delivering headline beats for all companies with a majority of sales to the end market. Book-to-bill ratios also held above 1x across the board, with the strongest backlog growth coming from space based programs. In contrast, the outlook for Commercial demand has turned more bleak as the spread of COVID-19 continues to trend in the wrong direction.

We screened the RBC coverage universe looking for mega-cap leaders that are rated Outperform, and four look like outstanding ideas for investors looking to gain a more defensive posture, literally and figuratively, for the rest of the year.

This company has had a public relations nightmare due to the 737 Max issues. Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) is the worlds leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined. It is also one of the most valuable brands in the world.

The different segments in the company are Commercial Airplanes, Boeing Defense, Space & Security and Boeing Capital. The latter provides financial solutions facilitating sale and delivery of Boeing commercial and military aircraft, satellites and launch vehicles.

The analysts noted this:

CEO Dave Calhoun stated that the company is prudently and proactively reviewing every aspect of our company. This could result in the divestiture of business lines to sharpen the companys focus and provide incremental capital to fund operations and future R&D.

While the macro environment is still highly uncertain, many on Wall Street believe Boeing can communicate greater visibility and confidence in all the key matters the company faces. Recertification test flights have begun, customers have had more time to make near-term and long-term fleet planning decisions, and Boeing secured $25 billion of additional liquidity with the May bond issuance.

The RBC price objective for the shares is $194, while the Wall Street consensus target is lower at $175.77. Boeing stock closed Thursday trading at $172.20.

This company, like other major defense prime contractors, has had a solid year, and the balance of 2020 could be better. General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD) is engaged in business aviation, land and expeditionary combat vehicles and systems, armaments, munitions, shipbuilding and marine systems, and information systems and technologies.

Major products include Virginia-class nuclear-powered submarine and Ohio class replacement, Arleigh Burke-class Aegis, Abrams M1A2 tank, Stryker eight-wheeled assault vehicle, medium-caliber munitions and gun systems, tactical and strategic mission systems.

Some Wall Street analysts were disappointed by quarterly results from the companys information technology segment. Though most dont view the segments struggles as a product of a structurally impaired business, some may begin to question that thesis. However, most continue to see value in the companys Marine, Aerospace, Mission, and Land businesses and view the overall valuation as depressed.

General Dynamics stock investors receive a 2.95% dividend. RBC has a $164 price target, though the consensus estimate is up at $172.11. The last trade on Thursday hit the tape at $149.14.

Picasso Y-Block Controversy: Why the Art World Is Rallying to Save Two Murals in Norway – ARTnews

Over the past few months, curators, activists, and historians have closely watched the demolition of the Y-Block, a building in Oslo. Though hardly a well-known structure beyond the confines of Norway, the Y-Block has become a structure of interest in the art world because it contains two murals by Pablo Picasso and Carl Nesjar that are key in both of their oeuvres. Produced over a 10-year span, the murals could be forever changed when they are separated from the building they have long called home.

The murals have their roots in the year 1956, when Picasso and Nesjar first met. The pairing was not an obvious one. Picasso was a celebrated modernist known for pushing the limits of how the human form could be represented; Nesjar, by contrast, was lesser-known, and mainly inclined toward low-key sculptures made from concrete. But the two found discovered a shared affection for Brutalist design, and Nesjar was ultimately tasked with translating Picassos drawings into monumental, three-dimensional concrete forms. At the height of their collaboration, Nesjar was called Picassos right arm, and wound up functioning as the artists confidant. I must be the only person in the world who has corrected a Picasso drawing, he said in 1968.

By the time Picasso died in 1973, the two had worked together to realize more than 30 monumental site-specific concrete murals and sculptures worldwide. Jacqueline, a series of towering monuments to Picassos wife, are installed on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge; the Vondelpark in Amsterdam; and in Helsingborg, a town in southern Sweden, among other locations. Bust of Sylvette, a 36-foot-tall sandblasted sculpture of Picassos beloved model, Sylvette David, was installed in the courtyard of Silver Towers, a high-rise apartment complex in New York designed by architect I. M. Pei, in 1968. (A single mock-up, signed Bon tirer pour Nesjar. Picasso, served as that projects contract.) In 2008, Bust of Sylvette was declared a New York City landmark.

Their first collaboration, five concrete murals designed for Oslos Regjeringskvartalet complexthe citys governmental quarterswas the only to become a matter of international controversy, however. In 2011, right-wing extremist Anders Behring Breivik detonated a car bomb near the complexs Y-Block, a structure named for its shape as seen from the sky. Eight people were killed in the explosion, and later that day, Breivik murdered 69 moremost of them teenagerson Utoya island outside Oslo. For many Norwegians, the Y-Block, which was left standing but has been kept deserted since the events of 2011, became to some inextricable from the worst atrocity committed in the nation during peacetime.

Intentions to demolish the Y-Block were announced in 2014, and in 2017 Oslo officials formalized plans to redevelop the entire Regjeringskvartalet complex in a sleek, glass-encased design. Proponents of the demolition argued that its location atop a vehicle tunnel proved an insurmountable security risk. The Y-Block would be deconstructed, while the nearby H-Block, which houses three small Picasso murals, would be restored.

Preservationists, politicians, and art-world figures decried the destruction of the Y-Block, which dates to 1968 and is considered a masterpiece of Scandanvian minimalism. Advocates for keeping the Y-Block put forward difficult questions: Wasnt destroying the structure a fulfillment of Breiviks anti-democracy mission? Two murals by Picasso and NesjarFisherman on its facade, and The Seagull in its lobbydecorate the Y-Block, and therefore make the building art historically important. Would become of these works?

Early reports about the demolition stoked fearthey mentioned workers untrained in preservation, who some believed would crack the delicate murals while drilling. An international uproar followed. Demonstrators, clad in stripes meant to recall Picassos famed Breton shirts, crowded in front of Fisherman. Their protests began to same futile at a pint. A motion by an opposition party in Norways Parliament aimed to reverse the demolition plan; the motion failed. A petition to save the building amassed nearly fifty thousand signatures, and curators at New Yorks Museum of Modern Art released an letter to Prime Minister Erna Solberg of Norway pleading for the preservation of the structure: The demolition of the building complex would not only constitute a significant loss of Norwegian architectural heritage, but it would also render any attempt to salvage or reposition Picassos site-specific murals elsewhere unfortunate.

Despite divided public opinion, in June 2019, a crane loweredFishermen onto two trucks en route to storage. The Seagull soon followed. Both are to be reinstalled in the new complex, which is slated to complete construction in 2025.

Nesjars daughter, Gro Nesjar Greve, and the grandson of Y-Blocks architect Erling Viksj jointly filed a lawsuit against its relocation. In an interview with the Art Newspaper, Greve said, Under Norwegian law, the Y Block murals are considered a co-authored art work by Picasso and my father and the architect Viksj [so] we do have what are called moral rights, as long as we can prove that the murals are a collaborationthat my father was not just a fabricator for Picasso but part of the artistic process.

Curators and activists have largely fixated on the murals co-authored by Picasso, but those works are only one facet of the art history that is being forever altered by the buildings demolitiontheres architecture history at stake, too. Viksj and engineer Sverre Jystad designed the Y-Block using Naturbetong, or natural concrete, an experimental casting technique based on an aggregate of aluminum and silicon metal, which created a tactile surface receptive to sandblasting. Nesjars technique, called Betograve, entailed pouring concrete over a formin this case, Picassos designstightly packed with gravel. The concrete was then sand-blasted with a high-pressure hose, exposing the gravel beneath. The final product was a singularity for the time and place: Brutalist architecture married with modernist figuration.

Nesjar knew early on that his and Picassos murals would enhance a building that was significant in its own right. In Scandinavia, there is great excitement about spreading culture for the masses, but not East European style, Nesjar told the New York Times. When I showed Picasso photos of the concrete art I was working on in Oslo, he got very enthusiastic. He leapt to his feet and ran to show it to the maid.

View from Brussels: Out of the space race? – E&T Magazine

The US made another leap forward in extra-planetary exploration last week with the return of SpaceXs demo crewed launch. It is looking more and more as if Europe will be consigned to being an enthusiastic bit-player, rather than a fully-fledged runner in the space race.

Watching last weekends crowd-less edition of the British Formula One Grand Prix at Silverstone, your columnist was struck by the parallel between motorsports premier racing series and the international competition to put humans into space.

Mercedes-Benz has dominated the proceedings for nearly a decade, while the likes of Ferrari and Red Bull have only managed to launch half-hearted challenges to the German manufacturer during the same period. Victories here and there but never the top prize.

That state of affairs is much like Russia and China, which have only infrequently competed with the United States when it comes to space policy.

Then you have the F1 midfield runners, the likes of McLaren and Renault, which have promised a lot given their pedigree but almost always flattered to deceive. Their racing efforts are the equivalent of Europes forays into orbit.

Last week, the European Space Agency lauded the fact that one of its astronauts - veteran French spaceman Thomas Pesquet - will be aboard SpaceXs second full launch in the first half of next year.

I am thrilled to be the first European to fly on the new generation of US crewed spacecraft, Pesquet said once the ink was dry on the contract. He will be part of a four-person mission alongside two Nasa personnel and a Japanese astronaut.

It reflects the hierarchy in the space race, where the big spenders reign supreme and the rest of the field have to make do with crumbs. Europe, after all, has to rely on Russia and now the US, again, to reach the heavens.

That dependence is likely to last at least another decade, if not longer, as Europes next-gen rocket, the Ariane 6, is not configured for crewed launches. Ithas still yet to make its debut flight, as coronavirus-based delays have moved the first launch back to early 2021.

Ariane 6 is purely geared towards upping Europes capacity to put hardware into orbit, a segment of the sector where the Old Continent admittedly leads the field. When it comes to GPS and Earth observation satellites, Europe can mix it with the best.

But the rockets lack of capacity to carry human capsules and even its one-shot-only capabilities - SpaceXs vehicles are reusable after all - has led many to question whether Europe is already out of the space exploration race and is settling for the riches offered by space exploitation.

Things are poised on a knife-edge. The ESAs member states granted the agency a beefed-up budget in late 2019, which should help fund projects as exciting as a new space station or even a lunar mission.

But the EU, which also contributes billions to the ESAs coffers, last month settled on a long-term budget that fails to provide the agency with any extra firepower compared to its last offering. That was despite widespread calls for the bloc to pump an extra 3-5 billion into the mix.

There are ambitious plans coming out of Brussels regardless. The EUs executive branch, the Commission, has spun off space policy into its own separate department along with defence matters, and the French official in charge, Thierry Breton, intends to boost its standing.

Space is one of Europes strong points, and were giving ourselves the means to speed up, the Commissioner said in late June, just before EU leaders shaved 3bn off the proposed budget.

SpaceX has redefined the standards for launchers, so Ariane 6 is a necessary step, but not the ultimate aim: we must start thinking now about Ariane 7, the former head of IT giant Atos added.

Giving Europe independent access to space for crewed missionsis likely to be a question of politics rather than money at the end of the day. The ESAs members would have to instruct the agency to make it a priority, which would then lead to a race between firms to provide the service.

Another thing that SpaceX has shown is that costs can be reduced when competition is added to the mix. Given Europe's vast resources of technical know-how dotted across the continent, the untapped potential is gigantic, despite the inability to match Nasa's huge budget.

Arianespace, the French company that designs the Ariane rocket family, says thata launcher with crewed capacityis not a question of technical feasibility. For the firms CEO, Stphane Isral nothing is impossible and all he would need is the green light.

The American manned space programme started again in 2012. Eight years later, there was this SpaceX manned flight. If Europe made the same choice, by the end of the decade, it would be possible, he said in June.

Things are moving fast. Elon Musks company carried out a successful test of its Starship this week, the latest step towards a first Moon mission since 1972 and even a crewed launch to Mars.

As ever, the EU - and by extension Europe - does not lack the ambition of other big players. But the slow pace at which politics can move and an at times frustrating unwillingness to take the first step, looks like relegating Europes astronauts to the back of the grid.

Trump and RNC expected to raise $15 million in Hamptons fundraising swing – CNBC

U.S. President Donald Trump pumps his fists at supporters gathered to greet him on the airport tarmac during his arrival at Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland, Ohio, U.S., August 6, 2020.

Joshua Roberts | Reuters

President Donald Trump's upcoming fundraising swing through the Hamptons is set to raise $15 million for his campaign and the Republican National Committee.

The proceeds will be going to the Trump Victory Committee, a joint fundraising operation between Trump's campaign, the RNC and a variety of state parties. A committee official confirmed the total and noted that in the wake of the coronavirius pandemic, all attendees must follow local guidelines if they want to take part.

"For fundraisers with the President, the White House Medical Unit and U.S. Secret Service evaluate all attendees in order for them to gain access to the event," this official said. "All attendees must [test] negative for COVID-19 on the day of the event, complete a wellness questionnaire and pass a temperature screening."

The state of New York only allows social gatherings of up to 50 people, whileGov. Andrew Cuomo has continued to call on people across the state to stay socially distant and wear masks. The Hamptons is a region of New York and home to some of the wealthiest business executives in the country.

The president plans to befeaturedatthetwo in-person gatherings on Saturday, including one that will be at the Hamptons home of his son, Donald Trump Jr., and his girlfriend, Kimberly Guilfoyle, who also is a top fundraiser for Trump Victory, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter who declined to be named as the locations are deemed private Trump Jr. reportedly bought the property in Bridgehampton, N.Y. for $4.4 million.

Guilfoyle and Trump Jr., were also set to take part in a separate Trump Victory fundraising event on Thursday in the Hamptons, according to an invite reviewed by CNBC.

For Trump's Saturday afternoon event, tickets start at $50,000 for guests take part in a photo op and watch the president's remark. A ticket for $100,000 gets an attendee a seat at a roundtable discussion with the president. The later event on Saturday will cost up to $500,000 per couple to gain entrance.

The development of the massive fundraising swing comes after Trump's campaign announced that it, combined with the RNC, outraised their opponents in July. Trump and the RNC brought in $165 million last month while Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, and the Democratic National Committee, raised $140 million. Trump and his team went into August with a slight cash-on-hand advantage over Biden of $300 million.

Trump Victory officials said their recent fundraising success represents the enthusiastic support for the president.

"I have been traveling around the country with President Trump over the last few weeks, and the level of enthusiasm is even higher than what I saw in 2016," RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel told CNBC in a statement. "Everyone is excited to contribute, and those resources are fueling our data-driven ground game and critical legal efforts to protect election integrity."

"As Joe Biden remains locked up in his basement, President Donald J. Trump continues to receive unprecedented support across America," Guilfoyle added. "We outraised Joe Biden last month, and we will do it again. Don Jr. and I are thrilled to be hosting President Trump in New York this week."

Public polling shows Biden ahead of Trump by just more than 6 points, according to a Real Clear Politics polling average.

The stability of the global economy now depends on Trump’s attention span – Business Insider – Business Insider

Now that coronavirus aid bill have moved from discussions between Senate Republicans to negotiations between the White House and Democrats, the stability of the global economy depends on Donald Trump's attention span.

As economists often say: "when America sneezes, the world catches a cold." That means when US economy hurts, the global economy hurts too. Right now pretty much every economist across the board is saying that delaying aid to Americans suffering through the coronavirus pandemic will significantly weaken our economy, and that puts the world at risk.

This worry about delayed aid goes especially for the extra $600 the federal government has been tacking on to people's weekly unemployment checks. Over at Moody's, economist Mark Zandi estimates that failing to continue those payments could result in 1.1 million lost jobs by the end of the year.

I could go on, so I will:

Without the federal supplement, weekly unemployment benefits nationwide average out to under $400 a week.

This is the problem Donald Trump now has on his shoulders, but it's obvious he can't really focus on it. For the entirety of these discussions he's been trying to tack on irrelevant ($1.8 billion for a new FBI building) or completely unhelpful (a payroll tax break) items that everyone hates onto the bill. Weeks ago he was even trying to get funding for coronavirus testing removed from the bill as if that's not the reason why we're all here.

Trump does not care what economists say until the stock market starts falling, and he does not care about the day-to-day lives of Americans suffering through this pandemic unless he sees solid proof over and over again they are part of his base. So do not be surprised if he throws a tantrum and continues to delay this process to get one of his items inserted into the bill.

The Senate majority could've stopped this madness by writing a proper bill one that Democrats could feasibly negotiate from. But instead Republican members descended into ideological rage and infighting when confronted with the prospect of continuing to help suffering Americans as if the money they were going to give back to the people doesn't already belong to the people. The bill they wrote was a non-starter for Democrats, adding more difficulty to the White House's task.

McConnell kicked negotiations for this bill to the White House because his caucus is too weak to take political responsibility for something that might be controversial to the libertarian wing of its party. This level of spending revolts them, so Senate Republicans needed Trump's political stamp of approval to absolve them.

The November election promises to be brutal for the GOP, and the party needs Trump's followers if it's going to survive. Unfortunately, Trump can't seem to pay attention to the issue every single human being on earth cares about right now, the coronavirus. He's still thinking about his petty grievances and insatiable greed. The GOP is captured, and so are we.

This is an opinion column. The thoughts expressed are those of the author(s).

Donald Trump’s Businesses Did Okay in 2019. But 2020 Might Be Awful for His Personal Wealth. – Mother Jones

For indispensable reporting on the coronavirus crisis and more, subscribe to Mother Jones' newsletters.

Before COVID-19 hit, Donald Trumps business empire was continuing to earn hundreds of millions of dollars. But the presidents recently filed personal financial disclosures show that much of that came from hotels and resorts, two of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic. We wont know the specifics of how COVID-19 has diminished Trumps wealth until next year (and even then, only if he is reelected and has to file another disclosure), but based on last years report, it could get quite ugly for the presidentright before he has hundreds of millions of loans due to private lenders.

Trump annually files a personal financial disclosure form that details the income he earned, the assets he owns, and the debt he owes. It is not as detailed as his tax returns, and it crucially leaves out key information for assessing the presidents financial statusfor example, how much money he spends. According to the most recent copies of the forms, filed Friday night, Trump earned at least $446 million in the 2019 calendar year through his businesses and investmentsa slight uptick from the previous year. But its not clear how much of that the president kept, and even when numbers appeared to be good for individual businesses in the presidents portfolio, all may not be as well in reality.

For instance, according to Trumps disclosure, his Turnberry golf resort in Scotland earned $25.6 million in revenue in 2019, up $5.2 million from 2018. But those figures dont include how much it costs to run the golf courseand it costs a lot. We know from corporate filings in the United Kingdom that in 2018, the golf course actually lost $13.1 millionfar more than even the 2019 increase in revenue. Unless Trump dramatically cut costs at Turnberry (well know later this fall when the British corporate filings are due), it seems unlikely the course was profitable.

At Trumps Mar-a-Lago resort, which he touts as the Winter White House, revenues slid by $3.7 million to $21.4 million for the year. No information is available on how much Trump spends to operate Mar-a-Lago, but its not a good sign for one of his marquee properties. Down the road at the Doral golf course he ownswhich he tried to steer an international summit to last fallrevenues climbed $2.4 million from 2018 to 2019, but profitability at the resort has slipped since Trump was elected.

Trumps other favorite vacation getaway, his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, also had revenues rise by about $2.5 million last year, but across many of his other golf courses, revenues seemed to just inch up, even as the economy as a whole was roaring. Trumps Jupiter golf course, in Palm Beach, Florida, where he frequently golfs while visiting Mar-a-Lago, saw an increase in revenues of just about $429,000.

One of the most prominent properties the president owns is a luxury hotel in downtown Washington, DC, which he opened shortly before Election Day in 2016 and quickly became a hangout for administration members, lobbyists, and foreign delegations hoping to make an impression on the president. Trump rents the building from the federal government and pays rent, partially based on how much profit he makesand has yet to pay above the basic amount, suggesting that even as its revenues inched up to $40.5 million (a $150,000 increase from 2018), the property is still not making much money for the president when all its expenses are added up. The Trump family announced they were planning to sell the property last fall, but the sale seems to have been put on hold.

To the degree that the Trump Organization appears to have been financially healthy in 2019, much of the business is built on Trumps resort and hotel business. Besides his golf clubs and hotels he owns, Trump manages hotels for others around the world. All told, revenues from resorts, hotels, or management fees accounted for $352 million, about 78 percent of all of Trumps revenues. The bad news, for Trump, is that in 2020, just weeks after the period covered in this financial disclosure, the COVID-19 pandemic steamrolled across the global economy, with the hotel and resort industries hit particularly hard. One industry group estimates American hotels have lost $46 billion in revenue since the pandemic started.

At one point, nearly all of Trumps resorts were closed, and he was forced to lay off as many as 1,500 employees. His Scottish golf courses rely heavily on wealthy American golfers, but with international travel out of the United States almost completely curtailedthe UK has maintained a two-week mandatory quarantine for travelers from the United Statesany progress reported by Trumps businesses in 2019 has likely been completely erased in 2020.

In that respect, the Trump Organization is no different than almost every other business around the world, but the presidentwho has retained full ownership of all of the properties, refusing to divest upon taking officehas some unique challenges. For one, he continues to owe a lot of money. The 2019 personal financial disclosure shows no substantive change in his listed debtshe still owes hundreds of millions to lenders on mortgages for some of his favorite properties. While Trumps overall level of debt is not unusually hightheNew York Times estimated his assets are worth about $1.35 billion compared to debt in the neighborhood of at least $470 millionseveral of his largest debts are coming due in the next few years, possibly during a second presidential term. Among others, Trump will need to repay Deutsche Bank about $125 million for mortgages on the Doral resort, and $170 million on the Washington, DC, hotel. If Trump doesnt have the cash to pay these debts, he could try to refinance the loansbut banks will look toward his recent revenues to determine his creditworthiness, numbers that will probably not be pretty after the damage from the pandemic is totaled up.

The Latest: WHO scrambling to resupply Beirut after blast – Las Vegas Sun

Published Friday, Aug. 7, 2020 | 10:01 a.m.

Updated 5 hours, 10 minutes ago

BEIRUT (AP) The Latest on the explosion in Beirut (all times local):

8 p.m.

The World Health Organization is scrambling to deploy $1.7 million worth of personal protective equipment to Beirut after 17 containers filled with supplies for the COVID-19 response were destroyed in this week's massive explosion.

Dr. Rick Brennan, WHOs emergencies director for the eastern Mediterranean, expressed concerns that the coronavirus outbreak in Lebanon could now get worse in the aftermath of the blast.

He says the massive extra burden of injured people could cause the health system to be overstretched by the emergency and coronavirus responses.

Brennan said the huge volume of supplies from a regional WHO hub will be needed to replace lost COVID-19 gear like aprons, gloves, masks and respirators. They are expected to arrive via a phased series of flights over the next week with the first coming in the next two to three days.

He noted concerns about the debris and particulate matter still in the air following Tuesday's deadly chemical explosion. Masks could be useful not just against the coronavirus but for people who have respiratory or heart disease.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah says the explosion at the Beirut port reveals nepotism and corruption that cant be ignored in Lebanon and that those responsible should be brought to justice.

Nasrallah denied in a speech on Friday that his group was responsible for Tuesday's blast or exercised any power at the port. He was responding to claims that his group may have stored explosives at the port.

Still, Nasrallah didnt rule out a missile attack or an act of sabotage. He said that storing explosive materials like ammonium nitrate at the port for so long means it is partially an issue of negligence, corruption, nepotism that should not be ignored.

Nasrallah added that if there is more confidence in an investigation carried out by Lebanon's military, then so be it. He said nothing about an international investigation, which has been suggested and supported by the French and other Lebanese politicians.

Nasrallah also said his groups domestic opponents are using the blast to blame Hezbollah and to turn public opinion against it.

You will see no results, he said

Lebanese President Michel Aoun says there are two possibilities behind Tuesdays blast either negligence or external intervention by a missile or a bomb.

Aoun said Friday that he asked France for satellite images to see if there were warplanes or missiles in the air at the time of the blast.

The blast is believed to have been caused when a fire touched off 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate that had been stored at the port since it was taken from an impounded ship in 2013. The cause of the initial fire is not known.

Aoun told journalists that he received information on July 20 about the stored material and immediately ordered military and security officials to do what was necessary. He did not elaborate. He said several governments in charge since 2013 received warnings about the material.

He said the investigation is concentrating on 20 persons. He rejected an international investigation into the blast, saying that it will make us lose the truth.

Pope Francis has sent a 250,000-euro (nearly $300,000) donation to the Church of Lebanon to help in the aftermath of the explosion.

The Vatican described that donation as initial aid that is intended as a sign of the pontiffs fatherly closeness to people in serious difficulty.

The aid has been sent through the Vaticans diplomatic mission in Beirut.

The Vatican noted that churches and monasteries were among the buildings destroyed by the blast in the port.

Already underway is an immediate emergency and first aid response including medical care, shelters for the displaced and center of basic needs made available by the church through various Catholic charities, the Vatican said in announcing the papal donation on Friday.

3:20 p.m.

European Council President Charles Michel is heading to blast-ravaged Beirut for weekend talks with Lebanons leaders as the EU weighs up its contribution to a donor conference in coming days.

Michel, who chairs summits of the EUs 27 national leaders, will hold talks on Saturday with Lebanons president, prime minister and the speaker of parliament.

He will also take part in a French-organized donor conference, along with the EUs crisis management commissioner. Brussels has said that the virtual meeting would take place on Sunday, but France has yet to confirm a date.

The EU has sent more than 300 rescue workers, sniffer dogs, vehicles and equipment to Lebanon and around 33 million euros ($39 million) is being provided to help address emergency needs, despite concerns that the money might be misused due to deep corruption in the country.

EU commission spokesman Peter Stano said Friday that Europes leaders are underlining the need for change in Lebanon, which was already shaken by a severe economic crisis and the coronavirus pandemic before Tuesdays massive explosion at the Beirut port.

He says the tragedy is a wake-up call also for the Lebanese politicians to start efforts to unite themselves and to embark on a very serious reform effort, because it is so obvious to Lebanese people and also to Lebanese partners outside that Lebanon needs profound reforms.

U.N. organizations are stepping up efforts to help Beiruts beleaguered population after a chemical explosion, expressing concerns about food shortages, a lack of COVID-19 protective gear, and tens of thousands of homeless children.

At a U.N. briefing in Geneva on Friday, World Health Organization spokesman Christian Lindmeier said the organization was appealing for $15 million for emergency trauma and humanitarian health support. He said 17 containers laden with personal protective equipment much needed for fighting the coronavirus outbreak were destroyed in the blast. WHO has sent in trauma and surgical supplies already.

UNICEF spokeswoman Marixie Mercado says as many as 100,000 children are among those whose homes were damaged or destroyed and have now been displaced.

She says the areas around the blast faced the most active community transmission of COVID-19, and said it was impossible for those affected to practice safe distancing alluding to recommendations by WHO and other health officials that people should keep a safe distances from each other to fight the coronavirus.

World Food Program spokeswoman Elisabeth Byrs says the agency's allocating 5,000 food parcels to families in Beirut, noting that Lebanon imports 85 percent of its food much of it through the now-damaged Beirut port.

Saudi Arabia has sent two planes to Lebanon carrying more than 120 tons of medicine, medical devices, emergency supplies, tents, shelter kits and food items for people in Beirut affected by the massive explosion this week.

The Saudi government said Friday a specialized team from the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center will supervise the distribution.

12:45 p.m.

The U.N. human rights office is calling for an independent investigation into the Beirut explosion, insisting that victims calls for accountability must be heard.

Spokesman Rupert Colville of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights cited the need for the international community to step up to help Lebanon with both a quick response and sustained engagement.

He said Lebanon is facing the triple tragedy of a socio-economic crisis, COVID-19 and the ammonium nitrate explosion" that devastated the capital on Tuesday.

Colville also called for the poor and most vulnerable to be respected as Beirut and Lebanon rebuild, and urged Lebanese leaders to overcome political stalemates and address the grievances of the population. That was an allusion to large protests that broke out in Lebanon in October.

___

12:10 p.m.

A team of 22 French investigators has started work in Beirut to search for evidence and bodies from Tuesdays deadly explosion and help Lebanese authorities determine what caused it.

Based on information from Lebanon so far, Frances No. 2 forensic police official Dominique Abbenanti says the explosion appears to be an accident but that its too early to say for sure.

In an interview with The Associated Press, he predicted that the death toll will grow as more bodies are found.

French investigators are involved at the request of Lebanon, and also because one French person died and at least 40 were injured.

Eric Berot, chief of a unit involved in the investigation, says the zone the investigators cover "is enormous. Its a titanic job.

He says the investigation is complicated by the huge scale of the damage and the Lebanese situation, referring to the political and economic crisis in the country before the explosion.

___

11:15 am.

Rescue teams are searching the rubble of Beiruts port for bodies, nearly three days after a massive explosion sent a wave of destruction through Lebanons capital, killing nearly 150 people and wounding thousands.

French and Russian rescue teams with dogs are searching the area, and at least three more bodies were recovered in the last 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 149.

The government has launched an investigation as it faces mounting criticism, with many Lebanese blaming the catastrophe on negligence and corruption.

The blast was apparently caused by the ignition of 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, a chemical used for explosives and fertilizer, that had been stored at the port since being confiscated from an impounded cargo ship in 2013.

The blast shredded a large grain silo, devastated neighborhoods near the port and left several city blocks littered with glass and rubble.

At Night, the Martian Sky Pulses and Glows When Viewed in Ultraviolet Light – Gizmodo

Ultraviolet Nightglow of Marss amosphere.Image: NASA/MAVEN/Goddard Space Flight Center/CU/LASP

New ultraviolet observations of the Red Planet highlight complex circulation patterns in the Martian atmosphere, including eerily regular nightglow pulses invisible to the unaided eye.

The Martian atmosphere, when viewed through ultraviolet light, is very busy, but only at night, and only during certain seasons, as new research shows. These pulsing and glowing atmospheric effects arent fully understood, but their presence reminds us that Mars has a really complicated atmosphere.

The new study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research, Space Physics, was made possible by the Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrograph (IUVS) instrument on NASAs MAVEN spacecraft, which has been in orbit around Mars since 2014. UVS provides a completely new lens with which to observe the Red Planet, revealing previously unseen circulation patterns in the Martian atmosphere.

The new paper, led by Nick Schneider from the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) at the University of Colorado, analyzed data gathered by the UVS instrument over the course of two consecutive Martian years (a year on Mars is equal to 687 days on Earth). By studying Mars in ultraviolet light, the researchers were able to visualize the effects of global-scale winds and waves high up in the Martian atmosphere.

MAVENs images offer our first global insights into atmospheric motions in Mars middle atmosphere, a critical region where air currents carry gases between the lowest and highest layers, explained Schneider in a NASA press release.

G/O Media may get a commission

These psychedelicactions, known as atmospheric tides, form from a recombination of nitrogen and oxygen atoms in Mars nightside mesospherethe middle layer between the stratosphere and thermosphere. By viewing Mars in UV light, the scientists were able to visualize changes in wind patterns across the different seasons, which influence the atmospheric nightglows. These planet-encircling waves are also influenced by solar heat and topographical disturbances caused by Marss massive volcanoes, according to the research.

Indeed, the mountainous volcanic regions on Mars are known to produce some really fascinating and freaky phenomena, including a massive elongated cloud that reappears like clockwork above Arsia Mons, a 12.4-mile-high (20-kilometer) volcano located near the Martian equator.

MAVENs main discoveries of atmosphere loss and climate change show the importance of these vast circulation patterns that transport atmospheric gases around the globe and from the surface to the edge of space, explained LASP scientist and study co-author Sonal Jain in the press release.

Interestingly, the atmospheric pulses happen exactly three times each night, but only during the spring and fall. The scientists also documented inexplicable waves and spirals above the winter polar regions, along with some unusually bright spots seen over the winter poles.

In these bright areas, gases are thrust downwards by vertical winds, causing them to enter into regions with higher atmospheric density. This serves to accelerate chemical reactions responsible for nitric oxide, which power the ultraviolet glow, according to the NASA press release. The UV emissions occur predominantly at altitudes reaching 40 miles (64 kilometers) above the surface, with some patches appearing as large as 600 miles (965 kilometers) in diameter.

These emissions are not to be confused with Marss eerie green glowa visible hue caused by the Suns rays exciting oxygen molecules in the upper atmosphere. To a human observer on the Martian ground, these nightly spectacles would be invisible. In future, a possible fun activity for colonists would be to watch these nightglows with UV goggles, in a sky-watching pastime roughly analogous to viewing the Northern Lights on Earth. This would apparently be quite the spectacle, as these bright patches zip across the Martian night sky at speeds reaching 180 mph (290 kph).
