(THE CONVERSATION) Many major religious pilgrimages have been canceled or curtailed in an effort to contain the spread of COVID-19. These have included the Hajj, a religious milestone for Muslims the world over; the Hindu pilgrimage, known as the Amarnath Yatra high in the mountains of Kashmir; and pilgrimages to Lourdes in France.

Pilgrims have faced travel delays and cancellations for centuries. Reasons ranged from financial hardship and agricultural responsibilities to what is now all too familiar to modern-day pilgrims plague or ill health.

Then, as now, one strategy has been to bring the pilgrimage home or into the religious community.

Journey of a thousand miles

Pilgrimage can be an interior or outward journey and while individual motivations may vary, it can be an act of religious devotion or a way to seek closeness with the divine.

Through the centuries and across cultures, those who longed to go on a sacred journey would find alternative ways to do so.

Reading travel narratives, tracing a map with the finger or eye, or holding a souvenir brought back from a sacred site helped facilitate a real sense of travel for the homebound pilgrim. Through these visual or material aids, people felt as though they, too, were having a pilgrimage experience, and even connecting with others.

One such example is the story of the Dominican friar Felix Fabri, who was known for recording his own pilgrimages in various formats, some geared toward the laity and some for his brothers.

Fabri was approached in the 1490s by a group of cloistered nuns, meaning that they had professed vows to lead a contemplative life in the quietude of their community. They desired a devotional exercise so they could receive the spiritual benefits of pilgrimage without having to break their promise of a life that was sheltered from the outside world.

He produced Die Sionpilger, a virtual pilgrimage in the form of a day-to-day guidebook to Santiago de Compostela, Jerusalem and Rome. In these cities, pilgrims would encounter sites and scenes associated with many facets of their religion: shrines to honor Jesus and the saints, relics, great cathedrals and sacred landscapes associated with miraculous events and stories.

Fabris guidebook sent the pilgrim on an imaginative journey of a thousand miles, without having to take a single step.

DIY pilgrimages

My current book project shows that from Lourdes to South Africa, from Jerusalem to England, from Ecuador to California, DIY pilgrimages are not just a medieval phenomenon. One such example is Phil Volkers backyard Camino.

Volker is a 72-year-old father and now grandfather, woodworker and veteran who mapped the Camino de Santiago onto his backyard in Vashon Island in the Pacific Northwest. Volker prays the rosary as he walks: for those who have been impacted by the pandemic, his family, his neighbors, the world.

After a cancer diagnosis in 2013, a few things came together to inspire Volker to build a backyard Camino, including the film The Way, a pocket-sized book of meditations, Everyday Camino With Annie by Annie O'Neil and the story of Eratosthenes, the Greek polymath from the second century B.C. who figured out a way to measure the circumference of the Earth using the Sun, a stick and a well.

For me, this guy was the grand godfather of do-it-yourselfers. How can someone pull off this kind of a caper with things at hand in his own backyard? It got me thinking, what else can come out of ones backyard?, he told me.

Volker began walking a circuitous route around his 10-acre property on Vashon Island in the Pacific Northwest. It was a chance to exercise, which his doctors had encouraged, but also created a space to think and pray.

Each lap around the property is just over a half-mile. Realizing that he was covering quite a distance, he found a map of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route to track his progress, calculating that 909 laps would get him from St. Jean Pied-de-Port to the Cathedral of St. James.

To date, Volker has completed three 500-mile Caminos without leaving his backyard.

Thanks to a documentary film, Volkers daily blog and an article in the magazine Northwest Catholic, the backyard Camino has attracted many visitors, some simply curious but many who are seeking healing and solace.

Pilgrimage and remembrance

The story of Volkers backyard Camino inspired Sara Postlethwaite, a sister of the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity, to map St. Kevins Way, a 19-mile pilgrimage route in County Wicklow, Ireland onto a series of daily 1.5-mile circuits in Daly City, California.

The route rambles along roads and countryside from Hollywood to the ruins of the monastery that St. Kevin, a sixth-century abbot, had founded in Glendalough. Postlethwaite had intended to travel back to her native Ireland in the spring of 2020 to walk the route in person, but due to pandemic-related travel restrictions, she brought the pilgrimage to her home in Daly City.

Every so often, Postlethwaite would check in on Google Maps to see where she was along the Irish route, pivoting the camera to see surrounding trees or, at one point, finding herself in the center of an old stone circle.

Several joined Postlethwaites walk in solidarity, both in the U.S. and overseas.

After each days walk, she paused at the shed at her community house, where she had drawn a to-scale version of the Market Cross at Glendalough.

As Postlethwaite traced the intersecting knots, circles and image of the crucified Christ with her chalk, she reflected not just on the suffering caused by the pandemic but also about issues of racism, justice and privilege. In particular, she remembered Ahmaud Arbery, a Black jogger shot by two white men in a fatal confrontation in February 2020. She inscribed his name on the chalk cross.

For Berkeley-based artist Maggie Preston, a DIY chalk labyrinth on the street outside her house became a way to connect with her neighbors and her three-year-old son. There is a link here with the medieval strategies for bringing longer pilgrimages into the church or community. Scholars have suggested that labyrinths may have been based on maps of Jerusalem, providing a scaled-down version of a much longer pilgrimage route.

They started out by chalking in the places they could no longer go the aquarium, the zoo, a train journey and then created a simple labyrinth formed by a continuous path in seven half-circles.

A labyrinth gave us a greater destination, not just somewhere to imagine going, but a circuitous path to literally travel with our feet, she told me.

As neighbors discovered the labyrinth, it began to create a genuine sense of community akin to that which many seek to find when they embark on a much longer pilgrimage.

Relearn to pretend

Volkers cancer has progressed to stage IV and he celebrated his 100th chemo treatment back in 2017, but he is still walking and praying on a regular basis. He offers the following advice:

For folks starting their own backyard Camino I think that creating the myth is the most important consideration. Study maps, learn to pronounce the names of the towns, walk in the dust and the mud, be out there in the rain, drink their wine and eat their food, relearn to pretend.

Ayala: San Antonios little-known spiritual forest will be preserved in perpetuity – San Antonio Express-News

The Headwaters at Incarnate Words 50-acre nature sanctuary in the middle of San Antonios urban core isnt well-known, perhaps by design.

Its bordered by Highway 281, Olmos Dam and Hildebrand Avenue and sits up against Alamo Heights and the University of the Incarnate Word, hidden in plain sight.

Its use stretches back more than 12,000 years to the indigenous people who were the areas first and longest inhabitants. Others followed their trails there to the head of the river in pilgrimages to the famous Blue Hole.

Today the Headwaters property is really a small forest trapped within the city, filled with oaks hundreds of years old and abundant springs and wildlife.

Long owned by a congregation of Catholic nuns, the nature sanctuary now has what environmentalists and land conservationists hoped it would perpetual protection from real-estate development.

Those assurances were enshrined in July in a legally binding conservation easement signed by Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas, a land trust focused on the Edwards Aquifer, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word and its environmental ministry Headwaters of Incarnate Word.

Those involved in the agreement say it took years to reach and was the work of godly patience, in part because so many entities were involved.

No doubt it was difficult because the acreage remains an enormously expensive piece of real estate, now forever off the market.

As part of the deal, the congregation gave up the rights to its development and to all those who may own the property in the future.

Its an infinite gift at a poignant time, when members of the congregation have not escaped the effects of a global pandemic and its declining membership looks to its own legacy and future generations that will enjoy and find solace in the preserve.

The congregation closed its 150th anniversary with the gift to those they may never minister to, nurse or educate.

They have 260 members in the United States, Mexico, Chile, Columbia, Peru, Ireland, Tanzania and Zambia, 100 of them are retired in the United States and Mexico.

Sister Teresa Maya, the groups leader, said the nuns were influenced by Pope Francis encyclical on the environment five years ago. It was the Vaticans most powerful instructions on the care of the planet and its poorest inhabitants.

Weve had an ecological conversion, said Maya, who led the national Leadership Conference of Women Religious through turbulent times. She said the conservation easement was the logical next step to that conversion.

It was a sacrifice, she said of the agreement and the valuable land to which the congregation has given up rights. We were not thinking of selling or building on it, but this agreement confirms that intent.

The day the agreement was signed, a letter arrived at the motherhouse in San Antonio from Rome celebrating Laudato Si, the papal encyclical on the environment. Maya took it as a sign that saving the green space in perpetuity was the right decision.

Former City Councilman Weir Labatt found his own validation in the Headwaters nature sanctuary, which he calls a spiritual forest. The conservation easement has been the only item on his agenda as chair of the Headwaters board.

Labatt thought of nothing else as he and other volunteers worked on clearing chinaberry and ligustrum trees, invasive species that overgrow and choke the sanctuarys majestic oaks. That project will take another 20 years, he said.

Douglas Dillow, CEO of the Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas, called the agreement tremendously important to San Antonios environment.

As a steward, the alliance wont do the day-to-day management of the sanctuary, he said. That will remain the work of the Headwaters of Incarnate Word. But the alliance will remain involved in perpetuity.

Maya and the congregation have no problem with that.

Having an environmental ministry reminds us we are stewards of nature, not owners of nature, she said. If we take care of nature, nature takes care of us.

She has seen the benefit of that first-hand.

Last spring, Maya said fireflies were spotted in the preserve for the first time in a long time

This spring, another gift arrived.

We saw so many Monarch butterflies, she said. It was absolutely magic, just magic.

Health First’s Pastoral Care Teams Turn to Technology to Deliver Spiritual Care and Compassion – SpaceCoastDaily.com

BREVARD COUNTY, FLORIDA Chaplain Woody Morrison is used to consoling families whose loved ones are terminally ill or have passed. But the COVID-19 pandemic has ushered in a whole new layer of anguish for mourners the inability to traditionally grieve that beloved person due to safety measures recently thrust upon us all.

I have families who will break down in tears in front of me because they cant have that emotional closure, said Chaplain Woody, a member of Health Firsts Pastoral Care Team, which serves the healthcare systems four hospitals.

So Chaplain Woody turned to technology something that perhaps months ago might be unfathomable but now is welcomed by those who are self-isolated and desperate to be a part of a celebration of the life of their loved one.

With social media and other live streaming services, family and friends who are staying close to home can now take part in final goodbyes and funeral services without risking their health.

When COVID-19 first surfaced in Brevard, Chaplain Woody spoke of a man whose wife was dying. The soon-to-be widower became increasingly upset over not only the loss of his spouse but the loss of the support system people lean on during such a heartbreaking time.

He was thinking of the funeral, and how he could not invite everyone to be there, Chaplain Woody said.

A virtual vigil was performed at their home, as was the later graveside service.

When I go to a home, I can live stream it and put it on speakerphone, Chaplain Woody said of family members who cant be present during a loved ones final hours.

The family can view a final prayer. Its the intangible closeness we want.

Any bedside final prayer or virtual service must not only have the permission of the family but also be approved first by a social worker.

Much care is taken to ensure that this new method of mourning is desired by the family and is respectful to the deceased. Most families find comfort in virtual bedside vigils.

Back in April, a Holocaust survivor admitted to Health Firsts Viera Hospital, and eventually to the William Childs Hospice House, was able to have a beautiful last call with his rabbi and several family members before he peacefully passed.

Its a smaller group usually people who are in the family unit, Chaplain Woody said. Its private and limited in scope.

Also helpful, he said, is the ability to record a service on Zoom allowing those who arent able to watch the service live still partake. It helps grievers to not feel so isolated and left out.

That means a lot that we can do that, Chaplain Woody said. Thats been helpful, to say the least, to get the celebration of life to a larger audience.

Back in the spring, Chaplain Woody performed a service for a late veteran at a Palm Bay funeral home. His graveside service was live-streamed.

Hundreds of people were able to attend virtually, Chaplain Woody said.

As long as social distancing remains in place, well keep doing this, he said.

I think these little things are very cool, Chaplain Woody said. That makes a difference.

Dr Mukesh Batra: The alternative medicine man – Livemint

After a 3-hour Zoom interview with Dr Batra, the comparison seems to hold good on many counts. He is easily the best-known, most commercially successful homoeopath from India. His network, spanning six countries, is managed by a team of 400 doctors across 225 clinics. In FY18, his company reported 225 crore in revenue. Like the actor, Dr Batras full head of hair defies his age69. But it would be strange if it didnt. After all, his company built a fortune mainly on the back of hair- and skin-care treatments.

In person, Dr Batra is all wit and charm. Think of (our business) as papad," he says. Lots of housewives made papad in India. Then Lijjat came and institutionalized it." Thats what he did with homoeopathy in India, he says: We formalized and corporatized it."

The chat took place over two sittings, with an hours break at lunchtime. Considerable time was spent discussing the efficacy of his treatments. For, homoeopathy hasnt found acceptance amongst the scientific community. Some go so far as to describe it as hokum, offering hope when there isnt any. Over the past decade, regulatory bodies in several countries have declared their reservations. France has announced it will stop reimbursing citizens for homoeopathic treatment expenses from 2021, theres a growing demand in the UK to follow suit. In 2015, a landmark Australian study analysing over 1,800 papers on homoeopathy concluded there was no good quality evidence to support the claim that homoeopathy is effective in treating health conditions".

Dr Batra, however, has a ready retort. A lot of these studies are biased and we shouldnt get carried away by them," he says. Homoeopathy does have its limitations, he accepts: There isnt much it can do for a gunshot wound, for example. But in many chronic psychosomatic cases, it plays a very good role."

But then, he adds, hes used to sceptics. Back in the 1980s, when I would go to a party and say I am a doctor, people would say, Oh very good. When I would tell them I am a homoeopath, they would do a namaste and then say their bye-byes and thank yous."

In recent years though, homoeopathy has found greater public acceptance and political backing in India. And after the covid-19 outbreak in January, the Union ministry of Ayush (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy) recommended Arsenicum Album 30 as an immunity booster". In the following weeks, Dr Batras network, like numerous politicians, businessmen and members of civil society, distributed the pills in large numbers. There are no clinical trials proving its efficacy against covid-19, Dr Batra agrees. But if a proper trial is done, he adds, you can give the world scientific evidence on the basis of which homoeopathy works for various diseases".

In a normal world, it would have been possible to meet Dr Batra at his clinic off Chowpatty in Mumbai. Its a small office behind Wilson College, where he set up his first clinic with the first electronic medical software in the world". But concessions have to be made for the pandemic.

So, one afternoon, my laptop lit up to the living room of a 150-year-old Portuguese mansion in Aldona, Goa. Dr Batra was sitting on a wooden chair, wearing a cool blue polo-neck. A vintage dining set formed the backdrop, a chandelier suspended above it.

His family had flown to Goa in March for a break from the city, Dr Batra says, agreeing that its not a bad place to be stuck in. Plus, we have a mango tree, so we get the best local mangoes. They are not Alphonsos but they are fabulous."

Dr Batra retired from active practice five years ago. His son Akshay, also a homoeopath, runs the day-to-day operations now. Dr Batra continues to be the face of the brand but more as the chairman emeritus". Meaning, I give advice when asked. If not asked, I keep my mouth shut." Lately, he has been spending time in charity work, photography and on penning his biography.

The story begins in Lucknow. Dr Batras parents were doctors. His father, a homoeopath, was the principal at a local college and mother, an allopath, worked as the deputy health secretary with the Uttar Pradesh government. My parents were busy people," he says. I experienced how medicine was all-consuming and decided that I wont become a doctor at all."

In the late 1950s, Dr Batras father landed a job as the principal of the Bombay Homoeopathy College in Vile Parle, now known as Smt Chandaben Mohanbhai Patel Homoeopathic Medical College. He was just 7 when they moved to Mumbai. After he finished high school, a trustee from his fathers college offered him a seat at the institution. He told me homoeopathy was growing, it will be good for you.... I thought, some people mortgage their land and jewellery with the ambition that their child would become a doctor. Here, I was getting an invitation." Was there no entrance exam? It was a relatively new college, says Dr Batra. They wanted people from good homes."

He didnt start off as a serious" student. But he soon had a change of heart. During my college days, I had developed 28 warts on my face. I had the annual day coming up and was supposed to go up on stage for an address." At his fathers suggestion, he used homoeopathic medicines.Within two days, he says, the warts fell off. There were no scars. It was magical."

After a bachelors degree in homoeopathy, he got another in psychology from Pune University. His first job was at a charitable hospital in Malabar Hill, at age 23. Within a few years, he had gained a reputation as a hard-working, enterprising doctor. In 1982, he set up his first clinic, at Chowpatty.

The next decade was a blur. Between consulting patients, paying off loans and raising two children with his now ex-wife Nalini, he was heading for a burn-out. In 1996, he decided to turn his general practice into a super-speciality. He hired a market research agency, surveyed his patients and identified 14 segments where his treatments had shown good results. Once he stopped general consultation, his patient load fell from 150 to two a day. He had more time to research and spend on each diagnosis. Two years on, he rebranded Positive Health Clinic" to Dr Batras Positive Health Clinic".

It was around this time that Dr Batras association with hair loss and skincare treatment began. He hadnt planned on it, he says. The Drugs and Cosmetics Act has a list of diseases one cant advertise for. Hair and skin are an open category. So we started advertising." Later, Akshay, who also became president of the The Trichological Society, UK, drove a targeted outreach for Dr Batras hair-related treatments. Today, says Dr Batra, over 45% of their 80,000 patients are seeking treatment for hair loss.

In business, he says, he followed the Raj Kapoor model: If his movie did well, put the money in a new one." Soon, he set up a second clinic in Bengaluru. Once successful, he set up more, hiring and training a fleet of doctors, expanding to more cities and later, countries. It has only been onward and upwards since.

For all his success, Dr Batra hasnt escaped bad press. Quora and Reddit threads are littered with criticism of him, trashing the 96.6% treatment success rate" he advertises. One of the most commented threads reads, How big a scam is Dr Batras?"

It pains me a lot to see it happening," he says. But its usually the unhappy customers talking about it, not the happy ones."

Between 2013-18, the Advertising Standards Council of India, an independent watchdog, pulled up Dr Batras several times for misleading advertisements and exaggerated claims. In 2014, it was for claiming to have won an award for being Indias only trusted brand in homoeopathy". In 2017, it was for advertising cures for diseases in violation of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and Drugs and Magic Remedies (Objectionable Advertisements) Act. In 2018, for advertising a certain gene-targeted therapy that could predict and prevent diseases 15-20 years before they show up".

Dr Batra is convinced it boils down to competition, jealousies". Beyond a point, you cant argue. Its a quasi (judicial) body, not legal. So should I waste my time in controversies or get on with my life?" Dr Batras, he adds, is governed by the food and drugs administration (FDA) and the Central Council of Homoeopathy. We have had no complaints so far."

Asked about the resistance to homoeopathy in the West, he says: The (British) royal family uses homoeopathy. I can send a list of important people in the world who do too."

Popular isnt necessarily effective, is it?

The way homoeopathy medicine is administered in the West differs from India, says Dr Batra. There are more than 300 double-blinded randomized control trials (RCTs) done on asthma, arthritis, etc," he adds. While Mint couldnt independently confirm this claim, several reviews of RCTs in homoeopathy have questioned the procedural rigour and quality of evidence. Dr Batra does agree that for homoeopathy to be established as a scientific system, many more trials are needed.

Today, people are looking at holistic healing. The side effects of allopathy are making a move.... And we have government support too, which we didnt have for so many years. As these things keep evolving, you will see the benefit more and more. And just like we took yoga to the world, we will take homoeopathy too."

Alternative Remedies and Therapies, Five Reasons You Should Try Them – We Heart

When it comes to treating certain conditions or symptoms that we face, its actually incredibly common for people to rely on alternative remedies and therapies instead of blindly taking medicine. There are actually a number of reasons why people do this and its not because people dont trust medicine. In fact, most people are more than willing to take a pill to help them get better, but there comes a point where someone might decide to look for other methods and heres why.

Photo, Annie Spratt.

1. Lots of alternative remedies and therapies might have fewer side effects: Side effects are more common than you might think with medication. Side effects can vary depending on the person and the medication taken but its also important to remember that theres a small chance that you could experience a side effect that nobody has documented. Adverse and unwanted effects can be a huge problem for traditional medicine and the symptoms can range from being a minor nuisance to severely damaging.

For those that want to avoid any kind of side effects or even the possibility of it, alternative remedies and therapies can be more enticing. Of course, its important to remember that some alternative medicines can also come with side effects, so its best to consult your doctor before you take anything.

2. In some cases, there arent other options that are easily available: There are often some conditions, especially life-threatening ones, where treatment isnt readily available or easy to find. It could be prohibitively expensive or it could involve surgery which the patient wants to avoid. In a situation like this, there may be an alternative remedy or therapy that could prove to be more helpful or practical.

While there arent many situations like this where alternative therapies and medicines can be more helpful, its usually something that your doctor will let you know. Theyll likely mention the options you have for treating a specific kind of condition and theyll tell you about the pros and cons of different approaches. In some cases, they might recommend some form of therapy or alternative medicine that could give better results than any scientifically-established method.

3. Some people prefer natural and healing therapies that take a holistic approach: One of the big advantages of alternative remedies and therapies is that they usually take a holistic approach to improve your health. For instance, chronic pain can often be cured by regularly exercising and focusing on the areas that you experience pain. This can help you improve the flexibility of specific joints and muscles which could deal with certain types of pain.

This holistic approach to wellbeing is extremely popular since it can both protect you from future conditions while also healing your current problems. If you want to focus on improving your whole body health, then these alternative remedies and therapies can be extremely helpful.

4. Alternative remedies are becoming more popular due to their availability: The number of alternative remedies and therapies becoming available these days is extremely varied. More research is going into different types of medication and theyre starting to become widely available in stores and online. For example, CBD gummies are now available online, giving people easy access to cannabidiol products without the need to smoke marijuana. It removes the psychoactive THC compounds which give marijuana its distinct high, leaving just the CBD which is known for its positive health effects.

While alternative remedies and therapies used to be fairly difficult to obtain or experience, were starting to see a greater level of acceptance than ever before. This has opened up the way for many different types of treatment, some of which are even recommended by doctors around the world.

5. The focus on prevention is often appreciated more than reactive medicine: Lastly, its good to remember that alternative remedies and therapies often focus on prevention rather than reacting to your condition. This is seen in the holistic approach that alternative medicine takes to some conditions. Its all about building up your bodys defences and being prepared for a situation where your body suffers a specific condition.

Many people believe that taking preventative measures is the best way to deal with some type of conditions that either doesnt have a cure or lack effective treatment options. This is why compounds such as CBD are becoming incredibly popular for their supposed ability to defend the body against certain types of conditions and also deal with issues like chronic pain.

The CFL’s Justin Renfrow: Athletes Need to Tell It Like It Really Is – SportTechie

Justin Renfrow is an offensive tackle for the Edmonton Eskimos of the CFL who was born and raised in Philadelphia. He played on the D-line for the University of Virginia through his junior year before transferring to the University of Miami as a senior, where he had 36 total tackles and one forced fumble in 13 games (and achieved status as an All-Academic athlete). After college, Renfrow had stints on five NFL teams: the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks, San Francisco 49ers and Buffalo Bills. He has been in the CFL since 2017.

Renfrow has been quarantining back home in Philly as the CFL season remains postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The league is currently considering a shortened 2020 season in a bubble environment in Winnipeg, some 200 miles north of the North Dakota border. In his spare time, Renfrow has been working on his clothing brand, JR Football, and building on his partnerships and advocacy through Athletes for Care, an organization of former pro athletes that advocates for healthy lifestyles and alternative medicines, such as using cannabis and CBD for pain relief.

On the protests for social justice . . .

Being in Canada for the last three years, I was surprised to realize how bad the racial problem had been here in the U.S. My mom and I went to the grocery store and Im noticing how rude people are; and its simple things, like someone pushing my mother. Seeing that after being gone so long and my mom telling me that things have gotten worse since I left. I thought she was making more out of the situation than it was, but when I came back I saw what she was sayingit was true.

For me, it has been an eye-opening situation. Im glad protesting led to the arrest of George Floyds killer. I know people need to be out there for George. But Im also very worried about the protesting and the fact that COVID was so bad here in the U.S. Im scared to see whats going to happen and worry there might be a big wave of sickness.

On why its so different in the U.S. . . .

I saw someone say recently that its a learned behavior, that its passed down. Thats definitely trueit is a learned behavior. Youve got this handful of cops that keep doing this, but theres a whole bunch of cops that are good and are doing good. I have close friends that are cops. My mentor in Calgary when I played for Stampeders was a retired New Jersey cop. There are good cops out there. But those handful [of bad cops], they got taught somewhere along the way to act like that. And we talk about it in football how when your peers are the ones that talk to you or discipline you, it means more than anybody else. And then I think about how the other cops, the ones that are supposed to be good, have just sat back and not said anything. I think if the other cops start talking, itll change things a great deal.

On the Athletes for Care initiatives . . .

After playing through the season with some significant injuries and only using CBD creams, instead of painkillers, it was life-changing for me. It helped my body, and it opened me up to a whole other world of medicine and ways to heal my body. I got back into yoga.

That also led to me becoming a spokesperson and using my platform to talk about many different things. I was already a spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Club, Big Brothers Big Sisters, and I feed the homeless once a week. In Calgary, I was also coaching two youth football teams. So I was already used to doing this kind of thing, but this is extending the realm and use of my platform. And I feel its important to use this platform for CBD because of the reason I switched over to it from painkillers: on the way to a football game one day, my body had a full rejection because Id been pumped with too many pills. From then on I started using alternatives and its been going well.

Everyone is going to be done with football someday, and we want to have a body to be able to live forward, and to play with our kids. I was playing on injuries for four months and that really can put you in a great deal of pain. I only just finished recovering. Now Im back running fully and I havent used painkillers.

On working with kids . . .

I try to do it in places where theres not the best area for a kid to grow up. Being able to motivate kids to keep going and to excel and to also tell them to chase their dreams. Thats a big thing that I tell every kid: they can do things. I think thats important to hear.

My parents told me and still encourage me to do all my passions, including volunteering. Ive been able to donate to different organizations during COVID; have been feeding a family for a month. And Im doing that through my clothing line that my parents said, Go ahead and start and do the mission you choose. Im also showing kids by example, which helps them receive the message. A lot of kids reach out to me after the fact and I try to answer as many messages as I can. I think it makes a big difference. I try to impact every community I play in.

On his clothing line . . .

Its inspired by the things I like to wear when Im training and working out, and theres also some loungewear stuff. Every month we have special programs. This month were doing a maska Justin Renfrow maskwhere a dollar from every sale is donated to one of the major Black Lives Matter organizations to try and help protestors. Its always been a dream of mine but it really started because I wanted a way to raise money to be able to help these kids I was working with. This is the third year Ive been doing it but I kind of wish I had started it earlier.

On daily routinesduringthe pandemic . . .

I have the iPad, iPhone and computer pretty much going all day everydayespecially with the company stuff. Im accessing Shopify on one phone, email on another, working on the computer at the same time. I hopped on a Zoom career day in the middle of the day, Im doing FaceTime live interviews, Zoom calls for potential new business, or businesses I want to work with. Everything all the time is technology.

And I still find time to play Xbox with my son.

On his favorite games . . .

I used to be a huge PUBG guy; was playing so many hours and became friends with some of the guys. We still to this day talk on Instagram once in a while and check in with each other. Ill go on and just broadcast and see them play while I play or while Im typing an invoice. I definitely miss the hours to be able to give as much as I used to. COVID brought some time, so I got into Call of Duty: Warzone. But my son and I really bonded over NBA 2K because hes loving basketball and I really am glad hes getting into basketball because I dont want him to play football. Well, Im wishing that secretly.

Seeing him get better at 2K has been really good. It has given us so much time to just bond and has given him a break between doing his school work. Once he goes to bed, I get a little bit of Warzone in. I might have to get into Twitch soon.

On athletes using their platforms . . .

Im seeing a lot of people out protesting. The big thing is: I want to see the people still be there in a couple weeks, or even a month or two from now. I want all this energy to stay there.

Remember when Colin Kaepernick was kneeling and people said, Oh, you monkeys just like to play football? They were saying all that stuff and booing and telling us to stop kneeling. But this is what he was kneeling for! And its what, three or four years later? Thats what I think people need to think of and what athletes need to start conveying. Athletes have these big platforms. Ive been trying to help people understand: When I [was a kid, I would] go to the field to play and it starts being 8 p.m., my mom would call or text me that I need to bring my butt home so the cops dont bother me after dark. She texted me that!

Thats how athletes can use their platform: tell how it really is.

I got pulled over while being black three years ago 10 minutes from my house in Philly. They said I didnt have insurance, but I did have insurance. And while Im calling Geico, theyre standing there with their gunstraps unlooped. Youve got to be careful.

That was something my dad educated me on: how to be with a police officer, saying yes sir, no sir. As a black person, your parents have to educate you. In the fourth grade when kids call you the N-word, you have to get educated. I was getting punched in the genitals and called the N-word as a sixth-grade running back. But that just motivated me; I still ran for three touchdowns that game. You learn from that stuff.

When I was growing up, we moved out of the city to the suburbs and my friends from the city would be like, Oh, you live in the nice houses or Oh, you live in the suburbs. And Id be like, I wish I lived where you guys do! I wouldnt have people calling me the N-word and teachers telling me I wouldnt amount to anything. A lot of times it sucked being the only black kid in the school and a lot of people didnt understand that growing up. But it makes you better for the long run and prepares you for real life.

On his hopes for sports leadership going forward . . .

This isnt a united nation, this is far from it. Everybody isnt treated equally here. When you look at the national anthem, or what it says, its a lie. America is still the same place that the original Declaration of Independence was written for: the white male that owned land. And now its for the white male that has a lot of moneyits still the same damn place. We havent really improved anything from our ancestors in terms of equality; all weve done is advance technology.

Now, youll go introduce the first-round draft pick but you wont go make a live Instagram video denouncing social injustice against black people? You can go on Instagram and in a minute say that same one paragraph you had typed up and posted on IG. You can say that yourself and record it with your camerathats what we need from our sports leaders. It has to actually matter to you; and if it does, you want to express it to people. It mattered during the NFL draft for them to get on TV during COVID. So I ask again: When is the life of an African-American person going to matter enough?

CPHS faculty member expands his publishing career with a new textbook | News – Campbell University News

Dr. Antoine J. Al-Achi, professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, joined the Campbell University family in 1989. He has been teaching botanicals and alternative medicine since 1999. Dr. Al-Achi recently published his third book entitled A Concise Treatise on Natural Remedies, which was published byCambridge Scholars Publishing.

Al-Achi holds a PhD degree from Northeastern University in Biomedical Sciences/Pharmacokinetics. He did his post-doctoral training at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute/Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. He has authored three books, several book chapters, and more than 220 other publications, including reviews, posters and presentations. In addition to his teaching responsibilities for various programs, he routinely oversees master level student research projects.

Cambridge Scholars described the new volume as, a means to examining the use of natural remedies in health and disease, blending scientific findings known to operate in the alternative and complementary medicine modalities with those utilized in folklore medicine. It points toward a unified theory that links the development of chronic degenerative diseases with inflammation, and considers how natural health modalities can alter or halt the progression of chronic diseases through their beneficial actions on inflammation.

A Concise Treatise on Natural Remedies blends folklore medicine ideas and scientific findings to present an integrated view of the use of these natural components in health and disease. The book will serve as an educational tool for individuals who desire a thorough understanding of this area of alternative health practices. Al-Achi indicated that, students and healthcare practitioners who desire to enhance their knowledge in this area, may find the information in this book very useful.

As a valued member of the CPHS community, Al-Achi is well respected and admired by students, faculty, and staff alike. He has taught this material at the undergraduate, graduate, and professional levels. He shared that this book was an extension of his previous publication and that his aim was to try to link chronic inflammation to the development of degenerative diseases (such as Alzheimers Disease and Parkinsons Disease) and to present scientific evidence on plants actions in halting the inflammatory process.

The book was officially released on August 1, 2020.

Crowdsourcing medical advice: Israeli startup steps in when doctors don’t have the answers – Haaretz

Fifteen years ago, Yael Elishs daughter, who was then seven, was suffering from a chronic ailment. We saw several doctors and alternative therapists, but nothing worked. It wasnt life-threatening, but every chronic condition is a nightmare for the family and the sick person, she says.

The Elish family is entrepreneurial by nature, and they decided to do something.

For years I scoured the internet every night, because I assumed there must be something that would help her. After about two years of searching, I came across a blog that described the exact same problem we had and explained how it was being treated. After that, I easily found a place in Israel offering the same treatment. We tried it, and after three weeks the problem was resolved. Because its a chronic illness, I cant say she is cured the professional term is remission, like a dormant volcano.

A few years later, Elish came to the aid of a friend whose 5-year-old son was suffering from a chronic illness. Investigating over the internet, Elish discovered treatments that the doctors in Israel werent familiar with. She connected the friend with an overseas doctor who was prepared to work with an Israeli colleague.

That was just before they were going to begin an aggressive treatment and only because the doctor here had hardly ever seen a similar case. I realized that there are good treatments available out there, but for all kinds of reasons they dont reach the patient: Either the doctor doesnt know about the treatment, or youve got the wrong doctor, or the health maintenance organization doesnt provide the treatment. Sometimes it happens that the doctor understands medicine but not surgery, or he doesnt understand alternative medicine, says Elish.

As the former head of product for Waze, the navigation software app that was acquired by Google, Elish had been part of one of the greatest Israeli high-tech success stories. She started thinking about how to use the same crowd wisdom that Waze is built on and how to apply it to chronic illness by helping sufferers find treatments doctors sometimes miss.

She started small. I said, Lets collect the information systematically. I did a kind of test. I went into a chronic illness Facebook group and created a 20-item questionnaire, something very basic in Google format. The questions were: Who are you? What treatments have you tried so far? Was the treatment effective? What were the attacks like before and after?

I started to analyze the information and draw basic conclusions for example: 60% experienced whatever treatment they undertook as successful. I started to release graphs showing the information Id collected. People in my circle said, But what will happen if all kinds of people who dont have a clue contaminate the data so it isnt accurate? But people took the questions very seriously and cooperated.

Even when I lengthened the questionnaire and added new questions, people didnt stop. They answered, and they were also able to answer better than the medical world tends to think. Theres a certain disdain of patients and their stories. Theyre considered anecdotes. But its people who know how to describe their illness best.

From that, Elish created the startup StuffThatWorks two years ago. Its aim is to transform patients anecdotes into a coherent picture of an illness and the treatments that exist for it precise and up-to-date information based on a broad sample.

We've got more newsletters we think you'll find interesting.

Please try again later.

The email address you have provided is already registered.

Elish says there are some 10,000 recognized chronic illnesses and about 500 treatments for each of them, ranging from medications to lifestyle changes to supplements. Most of the research is directed toward the most common illnesses, which number between 20 and 40.

Are you saying the medical profession doesnt monitor the success of a treatment or a medicine?

A great deal of money is invested in pharma, but the pharmaceutical companies conduct most of their clinical studies before the treatment is put on the market. Once its out and you can get whats known as real-world evidence, little research is done. The reason is cost. One patient in a study of that kind costs the pharmaceutical company $10,000 and represents a single case, so large numbers are needed to measure effectiveness. When you get down to the subgroups of an illness and the number of possible treatments, you realize that because of the insane costs, the only way to achieve mapping is by mobilizing people to do it together.

Elish drew on her Waze experience: Waze mapped the world from scratch; as people traveled, they drew a map of the worlds roads. Its classic crowdsourcing take a big problem thats dealt with ponderously today, with plenty of survey companies in the middle and manual data feed and the like, and provide a crowdsourcing-based solution, she says.

Elish founded StuffThatWorks together with Yossi Synett and Ron Held. Synett, a physicist by training, is the companys head of data science; Held, the chief technology officer, is a mathematician with 10 years experience in a secret Israeli army unit. Elish, who has a degree in international relations, is highly respected in the Israeli tech industry. As to the logic behind the startup, Elish notes that 8% of all internet searches are health-related and half of all Facebook groups deal with the topic. But the information is scattered all over the place and its hard to find your way, she says.

Held elaborates: The dialogue on the web is strongly tilted toward the most vociferous writers, those who express their opinion vigorously. Theres also no specific reference to the patients background. Thats the problem the company is trying to address.

Elish, 52, joined Waze in 2008, after her previous startup, eSnips, was sold. Waze was a tiny startup that compromised the founders and five developers. Elish was in charge of user experience and branding. She says: We made decisions that were revolutionary at the time, such as free text searches, in contrast to the usual format that existed then in the world of mapping, of click on city, street, street number. We put an emphasis on the cuteness of the products look and its game quality. That proved to be critical.

The Waze team debated whether a cute product would be perceived as credible. It turned out that it could, and shes now out to replicate that style with STW.

We have a wonderful designer and illustrator, Maya Shleifer, whos illustrated several childrens books and an interface thats pleasing to the eye. Our name, StuffThatWorks, is not right in any branding sense, but it represents people, information that comes from people. Theres some sort of apprehension that if youre not called Med-something or Health-something, and your company logo doesnt have a serpent, youre not serious. But we say the product will be cute and it will be serious.

Until a couple of weeks ago, STW was operating under the radar, but the whispers about it in the tech industry grew loud. In July 2018, the company raised seed capital of $3.5 million from leading VC funds 83North and Bessemer Venture Partners, for which investing in a new startup is unusual. A year later, Ofek Ventures put in another $5 million. On July 23 the site launched worldwide, for now only in English.

The platform has more than 180,000 active users, meaning that they are not only registered but also share information. Another thousand join every day. There are currently 105 chronic illnesses mapped on the platform. We call them research communities, Elish says. Everyone can open a new community and invite people to fill in a questionnaire and share. Once there are 30 active participants in a community, it opens officially. At the moment we have 200 of them in waiting.

Participants write posts about their experiences and add questions. The system informs users about others who have a similar condition, so they can communicate privately. STW utilizes natural language processing to obtain an in-depth understanding of what people are saying. Theres a difference between my head hurts and my head feels like its going to explode, Held explains. A sentence like that can be compared to the way a person expresses himself in general or describes other symptoms. You can find biases in the language, for example, for or against alternative treatments, even detect deceptions, like someone whos there to sell something.

Like every crowd wisdom startup, STW also faces the hurdle of harnessing people for the community before the product adds value, like the first users of Waze, who helped map Israel before Waze could provide navigation. You have to persuade people to invest in the vision, so the user feels its heading to a cool place and says, I want to be part of that, she says. There will always be someone with the vision to get a community off the ground and induce people to respond. We view those people as part of the company.

Held notes that STW employs a wider definition of health than doctors conventionally do: Medicine takes note mainly of clinical indices, so sometimes it will deem you healthy, even though youre depressed, cant bring yourself to leave the house or arent functioning sexually. The cancer didnt recur? Then thats that. With chronic illnesses the most important measure is quality of life, along with the clinical measures.

Sometimes we dont understand what the patient wants to solve. Some of the female patients in a particular group were upset because they put on weight and others, about possible damage to fertility. If an infant suffers from reflux, as far as the doctors are concerned theres no illness as long as the baby is gaining weight; but from the parents viewpoint the child isnt able to sleep and its impossible to go anywhere in the car. Our data respond to a far larger range of patients wishes than the world of traditional medicine.

I can imagine the doctors are saying that what youre doing isnt serious or that its fake news that will adversely affect public health.

Every doctor weve shown it to thinks its great. ... They love us, because they readily admit that this is a blind spot for them. For them, every small research study takes half a year we already have 10 million data points.

The company is only just starting to see success. If you look at depression, Synett says, youll see that the treatment thats ranked 25th in use is in second place in the effectiveness ranking. And that treatment, by the way, was developed for a different psychiatric condition. Apparently a psychiatrist prescribed it for a patient who suffers from both, saw that it helps and started to try it on other patients.

According to Held, there have cases in which STW identified a particular treatment as effective shortly after it came on the market, a year before medical studies began corroborating the evidence. Crowd wisdom can be ahead of research, indicate new treatments as effective relatively early, even help set a direction for future research, he says.

For the users, the information is provided free of charge and will stay that way. Most information on the site can be accessed via Google, without registering. Academic bodies and scientists will also get access to the raw data for free. But the company intends to commercialize the information (in the aggregate and only statistically, to ensure privacy) and sell it to clinics, hospitals, insurers and pharmaceutical companies so they can recommend better treatment and save insurance costs, for example.

When the coronavirus broke out, six STW employees and their families, as well as a few singles, came to live on a farm deep in the Negev desert; other employees would come and go as they pleased, Elish says. We were on cloud nine. In the morning, the children went to the goats and we started to work. ... It was good for the adults, too, without the pressure of having to take the kids to preschool with traffic jams. It was a wild period for the whole company, not only for those who worked from the farm.

STW is thinking about a future between city and desert. Now were thinking seriously about some sort of hybrid model between the center and the desert, and we already have one employee who moved to the region, says Elish. Before the pandemic, we were going to sign for a new office space at five times the cost of the present office in Tel Avivs Old North. That wont happen.

6 reasons why ginger is not only a spice, but a medicine too – Online Khabar (English)

A typical Nepali kitchen cannot operate without ginger. It is used as an essential spice in most of Nepali households. Also in many other parts of the world, ginger rhizomes in any form, be it fresh or dry or pickled or crystalised or powered, are consumed as a spice for adding its pungent cum sweet taste, flavour and strong aroma in any foods and beverages.

Not only used as a prominent spice in many cuisines, but it has also been used as a home remedy. Unani, Chinese, and Ayurvedic medicine systems use ginger for alleviating various ailments like nausea, vomiting, cold and flu, menstrual cramps, digestive problems, and many more for ages.

Ginger consists of an abundance of gingerols, oily phenolic compounds that are proven to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Various healing properties of ginger are accreditated to the presence of gingerols in it. Ginger aka Zingiber officinale falls on the family Zingiberaceae that also includes spices like turmeric and cardamom.

Ginger offers a plethora of health benefits. Here, lets unfold some of them.

Ginger is believed to treat digestive disorders by stimulating a digestive fire to break down the food we consume and easily assimilate nutrients. In a study report titled Effect of ginger on gastric motility and symptoms of functional dyspepsia, published in 2011, it was concluded that ginger stimulated gastric emptying and antral contractions in patients with functional dyspepsia.

Ginger has been recommended and used for relieving nausea (seasickness) and vomiting since antiquity. This usage of ginger as an antinausea agent is the most common and deep-rooted one.

In a 2018 systematic review that is based on the current evidence on the effect of consumption of ginger in gastrointestinal problems, it was concluded that ginger might be the safest and most effective alternative medicine for alleviating the symptoms of nausea and vomiting during pregnancy.

Also, studies suggest that it might ease postoperative nausea and vomiting, and nausea induced by chemotherapy.

It is viewed that the consumption of ginger may help in reducing the risk of chronic cardiovascular diseases.A 2015 study concluded that ginger may help in reducing the risk of some chronic complications of diabetes by significantly lowering the levels of fasting blood sugar, haemoglobin A1c, apolipoprotein B, apolipoprotein B/apolipoprotein A-I and malondialdehyde in type 2 diabetic patients.

Also, a 2019 review mentioned that ginger has shown cardiovascular protective properties by increasing the level of high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (the good cholesterol), decreasing the levels of total cholesterols, triglyceride and very low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol and LDL concentrations. It is also found in the same review that ginger can reduce the levels of blood lipids and blood pressure, all acting as armour against coronary heart disease.

Ginger has been traditionally used as a home remedy for easing common cold and flu infections by many people.

In a 2013 research study, it was tested whether the fresh ginger has anti-viral activity against the human respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory tract cells. And, this study concluded that fresh ginger showed efficacy against HRSV-induced plague formation in respiratory tract cell lines.

Relieving pain and reducing inflammation is one of the traditional uses of ginger. Several studies have proven that ginger can ease various forms of pains including menstrual pain (dysmenorrhea), pain induced by eccentric exercise, and can combat inflammation.

In a meta-analysis, clinical efficacy and safety of oral ginger treatment in osteoarthritis patients were evaluated, and this study concluded that ginger intake by mouth was effective and safe for the treatment of pain and inflammation induced by osteoarthritis.

Also, a review published in 2017 that studied 16 trails showed compelling evidence for gingers anti-inflammatory properties and potential use as a treatment for a variety of inflammatory diseases that plague industrialized nations.

A 2014 review reported that ginger has anti-cancer properties and these properties of ginger are credited to the presence of an abundance of 6-gingerols in it.

Also, in a pilot trial conducted in 2013, either 2 gram of ginger or a placebo was given to 20 participants who had an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer for 28 days. And, this study suggested that ginger might reduce proliferation in the normal-appearing colorectal epithelium and increase apoptosis and differentiation relative to proliferation. The result of this pilot trial signifies that ginger may help in reducing the risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Why NFL Ironman Brett Favre Has Turned to CBD to Ease His Pain – InsideHook

Brett Favre is no stranger to pain

Jonathan Daniel/Getty

This is Life After Football, an ongoing series that examines how current and former NFL players, coaches and executives are building a legacy beyond the gridiron.

After making an NFL-record 297 consecutive starts over 19 seasons while playing for the Green Bay Packers, New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings, Brett Favre certainly knows the toll that playing professional football can take on the human body. A three-time MVP who went to 11 Pro Bowls, won a Super Bowl in 2006 and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Favre is also well aware of the havoc that treating that pain can wreak.

Two years ago, the 50-year-old toldSports Illustrated he took as many as 14 Vicodin at once during the 1995 season, when he won the first of his three MVP awards, and that he had to make three separate trips to rehabilitation centers during his career to fight off his dependence on painkillers and alcohol. Given his struggles with addiction, the retired quarterback no longer turns to painkillers to deal with the routine aches and pains he still experiences from a life in football.

Thats what compelled Favre decided to start using CBD, the currently booming alternative medicine thats derived from cannabis but contains no THC and vitally for Favre isnt habit-forming.

Brett Favre uses CBD to help him with his aches and pains.

Green Eagle

I had a bad experience with pain meds and was addicted like no one else. I mean, I was about as hooked as you could get, Favre tells InsideHook. I dont want to take anything I can get addicted to and I dont. When the product was presented to me, my first thought was, Well, I dont want to be involved in this. So I tried the product. It works and its non-THC, which is important. Some people probably could care less, but most probably are like me.

Favre, who was impressed enough with the product to partner with nascent brand Green Eagle as a spokesman, now uses CBD on a semi-regular basis, and says he absolutely would have used CBD during his playing days if it was available and allowed by the NFL.

I wish it would have been around way back when, he says. There was a time when there was a product called DMSO. Its banned now, but my first five to eight years, that product was available. It looked like olive oil and you would rub it on. I had numerous sprained ankles in my career, bad sprains, and when youd rub this oil or cream on, there was no doubt it worked. You could feel it. It had a sensation and it reeked. It came out of your pores and breath and just reeked of rotten oysters or something. But Id rub it on, and within 20 or 30 minutes, I was practicing like there was nothing bothering me. I came to find out it was used in horse racing. If a horse was sore, they would rub it on them prior to a race. Theres no doubt there was stuff in it a doctor today would cringe at, thinking a person used that. I wonder what long-term effect thats going to have on me, because something that strong that worked that well cant be good for you. Fast forward to CBD. I hope it gets in the mainstream American lifestyle soon. Not to help me, because my days of playing are over, but for present players. I absolutely would recommend it for general aches and pains.

For Favre, who had been approached about endorsing CBD products in the past, it is important to let people know there are alternatives to dealing with pain in the way that he did.

Im not qualified in a lot of things, but I think this is one where I certainly qualify, as far as giving a testimonial. Theres no doubt, he says. I have no problems talking about my past, because I know Ive helped so many people by raising awareness. It can happen to anyone, and its better to not take something or drink something. Find an alternative. There probably were alternatives in 1992 when I started taking pain pills, but there are certainly way more safe alternatives today. The least likely of people to be addicted to something have become addicted to painkillers, because its just that dangerous and strong.

Favre rolling some Green Eagle on his throwing hand.

Green Eagle

Favre is optimistic the NFL, which has dragged its feet about making non-traditional painkillers legal within the league but did make some concessions within the latest CBA agreement, will be forced to prioritize player health as the league attempts to play its season in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

More so than any other time in NFL history will the health of the player is being scrutinized, he says. The NFL is very, very reluctant to venture out of their realm of how they think things should be done. I know that firsthand because of the concussions. They do not want to acknowledge that concussions are a problem. You and I both know, like everyone else, concussions are a major problem. But they dont really want to hear anything about treatments or anything like that, which is crazy. Who knows what theyll do with this product, but Im hoping theyll give it a try.

That said, Favre cautions not to expect miracles from Green Eagle or any other CBD product.

There are some days I feel great. Other days, a shoulder may bother me or a calf, just general stuff. It sucks getting old, by the way, he says. Thats when I use it. Its not an everyday thing because I dont need it every day. If youve got a fractured vertebra, this roll-on pain cream is not going to work. But if you have tendonitis in your elbow that flares up from time to time, I absolutely would tell you to use it, and think without a shadow of a doubt it would work on it.

6 natural home remedies to get rid of nausea – Insider – INSIDER

Nausea refers to feelings of queasiness often with the urge to vomit. Symptoms of nausea include sweating, a rush of saliva in the mouth, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

While it's often associated with acid reflux and over-eating, nausea can also occur during pregnancy, with motion sickness, or as a side effect of other medical disorders or common illnesses.

There are many anti-nausea medications that can help with severe or persistent nausea. But if your nausea is mild or occasional, there are also a number of effective home remedies that can help relieve your symptoms naturally.

Ginger is an effective remedy for nausea, says Daniel Devine, MD, internal medicine doctor and geriatrician at Devine Concierge Medicine, a primary care practice in Philadelphia.

That's because ginger has anti-inflammatory properties, which can support digestion, and its compounds are also thought to speed up the process of stomach contents moving into the small intestine, which can reduce symptoms of nausea.

A 2014 analysis of six different studies published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine examining the use of ginger in pregnancy found that taking about one gram of ginger once a day for at least five days decreased symptoms of nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy. Studies have also found that ginger can be effective in managing nausea and vomiting symptoms for chemotherapy patients.

Ginger can be taken as a supplement, sold as capsules. You can also add pieces of whole, fresh ginger to your tea, or include it as a spice or seasoning in your food.

Peppermint has long been regarded as a traditional remedy for nausea, though the scientific evidence on its efficacy is not as robust as it is for ginger, Devine says. Still, many people swear by its calming properties.

The main ingredient in peppermint, menthol, is thought to relax the stomach, which can alleviate cramping and nausea.

One small study from 2014 published in the Journal of Perianesthesia Nursing suggested that even the scent of peppermint oil can alleviate nausea, but more research is needed to determine whether it is an effective remedy.

However, if you experience both nausea and vomiting, peppermint may not be very effective, since it is primarily used to treat nausea and not episodes of vomiting.

If you want to give peppermint a try, you can buy it as a tea or diffuse peppermint essential oil for aromatherapy by adding two to three drops of peppermint oil to a diffuser filled with water.

Eating too much can cause nausea, Devine says. That's because when you eat too much, it stretches the stomach, resulting in bloating, heartburn, and excessive digestive movement all of which can lead to nausea.

Eating small, frequent meals and consuming a bland diet without strong flavors can be helpful in reducing episodes of nausea, Devine says. Bland foods are easy to digest and can help settle your stomach.

Bland foods that can help with nausea include:

If you're feeling queasy, you should avoid spicy food and acidic beverages like soda, juice, or alcohol all of which can exacerbate nausea symptoms. You may even want to consider trying the BRAT diet when you feel nauseous.

It may be hard to eat or drink anything when you have nausea including water. But according to Devine, dehydration will only make your nausea worse.

This can be especially important if you're experiencing nausea as a result of extreme heat or humidity. In fact, nausea and vomiting are some of the main symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Overheating causes your blood vessels to dilate as your body tries to cool itself down and this change in blood pressure can manifest as nausea or dizziness. But if you drink lots of water and stay hydrated, it will help you cool down and return to a normal body temperature.

If drinking water is a challenge for you with nausea, you should take small sips throughout the day or try a soothing beverage like warm peppermint tea.

For more information, read about how much water you should be drinking each day to stay hydrated.

When you feel queasy, you might be tempted to lay down, but this actually isn't the best idea. Lying flat while nauseous could lead to vomiting, Devine says.

"It is important to use gravity to your advantage and keep your head inclined above your stomach," Devine says.

By staying upright, gravity helps keep your stomach contents down. Sitting down in an upright position or lying down with your head propped up on a couple pillows is the best choice if you're hoping to relieve nausea.

Acupressure is an alternative medicine practice of applying pressure to certain points on the body, known as meridians. The idea is that by putting pressure on these places, you send a message to the body to turn on its self-healing mechanisms, which may alleviate pain or nausea.

A 2006 review of more than 40 trials published in the journal Autonomic Neuroscience found that acupressure can reduce some symptoms of nausea.

One of the main pressure points for nausea is called the Pericardium 6, or Neiguan, located near your wrist. This pressure point is thought to alleviate nausea because the meridian pathway of this point travels up the arm, into the chest and upper abdomen, near the stomach.

Here's how to locate P6 and use this pressure point:

If nausea is associated with frequent episodes of vomiting, chest pain, or comes with dark stools or dark vomit, you should reach out to your doctor, Devine says. And if nausea persists for more than a couple days, or if the symptoms are quickly worsening, that could also be a sign that something more serious is going on.

For example, conditions like pancreatitis, bowel obstructions, or even a heart attack can cause nausea and will require medical attention.

Some people are also more prone to nausea due to certain conditions. These include:

Nausea can feel uncomfortable, but it is generally very manageable with the right approach. If you can't get rid of nausea with these natural home remedies, check in with your doctor, who can work with you to develop a treatment plan.

The cyberpunk world of Anno: Mutationem comes to PS4 – PlayStation.Blog

We are ThinkingStars and in our game Anno: Mutationem were all about that mix. The game is a combination of 2D & 3D modes, action and adventure gameplay, sprites and polygons, while throwing in some RPG-elements and letting the whole thing come alive amid a bustling cyberpunk world. So how does this 2D and 3D fusion actually work?

First, you take control of main character Ann, a lone wolf one-woman army who is supported by her hacker friend Ayane. When you start the game, you will be in what we call Exploration Mode, meaning you can play the game as if its your favorite an action RPG: you move around in 3D, talk to NPCs, and interact with the environment. No rush, its your world.

As you proceed to the next section it will seamlessly switch to the 2D Battle Mode, which is where Ann busts out the broad swords, hand cannons, and that fast, lethal rhythm of battle. Combat is all about double-jumps, dodging, and well-timed ground-pounds. It plays like your favorite 2D action games, along with exciting platforming and huge boss fights.

This dynamic looks cool and we hope you think so, too. Beyond stylish aesthetics, the gameplay works functionally, too.

The pixel-graphics and 2D sprites are a love letter to the games we grew up playing. Todays tech allows us to create huge cities and environments in a modern style that holds on to a hybrid vibe we feel is very fitting for cyberpunk.

In the trailer you can see one of the major cities players can explore as they wish. They can roam the night streets thru throngs of people, choose to return to Anns apartment to take a rest and check her email, or go to one of the local stores for supplies. As with many ARPGs, you can buy, sell, and craft new gear or upgrade old favorites. Well-rested and supplied, you and Ann are ready for the next mission.

Anno: Mutationems setting is decidedly cyberpunk, with all the familiar sights and neon lights youd expect. However, our trailer showcases a hideous reptilian beast and a nightmarish scene with a blood-red sea and eldritch statues in the background. Our world reaches for something else too. Something the eerie and bizarre.

The storyline conveys this surreal feeling, too, but we dont want to spoil anything. Trust that the plot will be intricate, twisted, freaky, cause an occasional OMG, OMG,OMG!

We hope that our players will enter this cyberpunk-world of ours and dig it. We want it to feel as if the world is your own., To remember the sights, situations, and characters you meet We want you to feel the thrill of battle during the action segments and immerse yourself in the unravelling story..

In short, we welcome all to the world of Anno: Mutationem. Bring a gun and a cybernetically enhanced arm.

Cyberpunk 2077 is getting its second Night City Wire on August 10, will reveal more info about gameplay – Windows Central

It's been a hot minute since we last received new info regarding Cyberpunk 2077, but that's all about to change. CD Projekt Red just announced on Twitter that their ambitious sci-fi open-world RPG is going to be featured in a second episode of Night City Wire, which will be steamed on their Twitch channel on Monday, August 10, 2020 at 6 pm CEST (or 12 pm ET). If you're interested in this game, you definitely won't want to miss this.

Night City Wire episode two will discuss new gameplay elements of Cyberpunk 2077, including the various life paths that players can choose when creating their characters, some of the many weapons we can expect to see and be able to use in the game, and how real-life band Refused accomplished their transformation into in-game band SAMURAI.

I'm particularly interested in the life paths, which are different origin stories you can choose from when you create an epic character, and will affect dialogue options, character interactions, and even missions. We've known about this for a while, but details thus far have been shaky. Hopefully CD Projekt Red will drop all the details on August 10, while we wait until November for the game's (hopeful) release.

Are you going to tune into Night City Wire episode two? Let us know in the comments below! The previous Night City Wire broadcast showed off Braindancing gameplay. Cyberpunk 2077 is set to release on November 19 for Xbox One, PC, Stadia and PS4, with free Xbox Series X and PS5 upgrades coming after launch.

The standard for next-gen.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest project from CD Projekt Red, the developers behind the Witcher 3. To follow up the game that defined a generation of gaming, Cyberpunk 2077 needed to be huge, ambitious, and captivating. Every indication says that CD Projekt Red is posed to repeat history with their sci-fi, open-world RPG adventure.

A boxing poster and a shot of iconic rapper Tupac beautify the wall guiding them. They strike enjoy on Phil Collins strike from 1981, In the Air Tonight.

It appears like a rain entrance or one thing, Tim says. The two nod their heads to the conquer.

Then, about halfway by means of the online video, the famous drum solo hits. Tim and Fred are visibly stunned, yet thrilled they start dancing in their chairs, pausing the video clip to swiftly focus on.

I have never ever noticed nobody drop a defeat a few minutes in the tune! Fred exclaims, chatting to the digital camera.

Their joy is delightful. And in the previous 7 days, the movie has seemingly exploded with far more than 1.7 million sights.

Tim, pictured in most of the videos sporting a durag, failed to even know the movie experienced blown up. A good friend instructed him later.

When we do video clips, I dont be considering absolutely nothing of it due to the fact I be considering, Oh, we gotta do that subsequent movie, Tim stated.

We wasnt imagining this was gonna hit, Fred added.

Tim and Fred, 22-yr-old twins from Gary, Indiana, have been uploading response movies for about a year. At initially, they caught to a ton of rap new music, they claimed, but then someone requested Frank Sinatras I have Obtained You Beneath My Skin.

That track GOES, he states now, remembering the video. It can be what bought them accomplishing extra older music, he claimed, generally what ever individuals asked for.

The Quest For Liberty And Dignity: Against Judicial Insensitivity To A Womans Autonomy – Feminism in India

5 mins read

Posted by Meghna Sharma

The judicial responses to cases, especially when it comes to womxn exercising their autonomy and rights over their bodies, never cease to amaze. Activist Rehana Fathima was recently in news for trying to educate her children about the female body and liberate their minds of hyper-sexualisation of women. She chose an unconventional method of getting them to paint on her semi-nude body and posting a video on social media featuring the act of her children engaged in painting. The video led to a public outcry, accusing the activist of portraying obscene representation of children. Rehana Fatima, having been charged under Section 13 of POCSO and Section 67B of the Information Technology Act, sought anticipatory bail from the Kerala High Court.

The Kerala High Court took the view that the activist had used her children for sexual gratification and the children are represented in the video uploaded in an indecent and obscene manner because they are painting on a naked body of their mother. The Court further opined that if the act of painting was done within the four walls, it would not have constituted an offence. However, the offence, according to the High Court, has been committed by uploading the video on social media platforms.

The Kerala High Courts decision in activist Rehana Fatimas case seems to have revived the debate surrounding womens autonomy, female nudity and obscenity.

The High Courts decision seems to have revived the debate surrounding womens autonomy, female nudity and obscenity. Many would disagree with the choice of the activist to use her body as a canvas to educate her children or spread awareness of the female body or liberate the mind from hyper-sexualisation. But that would not necessarily make it obscene. Nudity is not in appearance but in thoughts. The message in a picture overpowers the not so visible nudity and expresses how female nudity is not just about sexualisation. The Delhi High Court considered in Maqbool Fida Husain (2008) case whether the nude portrayal of Bharat Mata by the artist should be considered obscene. The Court held that the aesthetic touch to the painting dwarfs the so-called obscenity in the form of nudity and that the art makes the nudity so insignificant that it can be easily overlooked.

Again, the Supreme Court in Aveek Sarkar (2014) had, while quashing a case against the publication of a nude picture, held that only those sex-related materials which have a tendency of exciting lustful thoughts can be held to be obscene.

The High Court seems to be influenced by the fact that the act of the children painting on their mothers body was circulated on the internet instead of being confined in a private space. The offence is believed to have been committed by uploading the video and not by creating it. This raises a question if the act per se is not an offence, then could the circulation of its video be an offence? In any case, it is difficult to comprehend how the activist could be said to have used her own children for sexual gratification. The activist has now moved the Supreme Court challenging the dismissal of her anticipatory bail petition. It remains to be seen how the Apex Court deals with such challenge.

It is sad that female public nudity and womens autonomy over their expressions is still treated as a moral offense and is a cause for concern. If a child, through such seemingly radical means, is liberated of hyper-sexuality right from the childhood, it will probably eradicate this notion which is prevailing since ages. Breaking such stereotypes will lead to liberty of woman in the real sense.

This is not a case in isolation. There are a number of judgments that reflect judicial insensitivity to the autonomy of a woman, even to the extent of affecting her liberty. For instance, the Magistrate in the Araria District Court in Bihar construed the outburst of a gang rape survivor in Court as contempt and sent her into custody.

The outburst by the survivor was said to have been after she had to stand for hours in humid conditions in close proximity of an accomplice of her alleged rapists. Be that as it may, the very fact that the survivor was remanded to custody by the Magistrate speaks volumes of his lack of empathy towards her. It was only about a week later on 17 July 2020 that the survivor was granted bail.

In a bizzare move, a former priest of the Roman Catholic Church in Kerala who was jailed for the rape of a minor girl four years ago moved to the Kerala High Court. The convict filed an application seeking suspension of the sentence to marry the victim. The application is still pending in the High Court of Kerala. However, various activists and advocates were seen raising their voice against allowing bail to the convict.

In another case, the Orissa High Court granted bail on 24 July 2020 to a man accused of rape of a minor after he revealed that he, while availing the interim bail, had married the victim, who had now attained majority. The fact that a rape accused married his victim was treated to be the consideration for granting bail was shocking, for lack of better words. It seems to have been overlooked that the offence of rape is a crime against society and not just against the victim (Shimbhu, 2013). Such a conduct might eventually encourage the accused to pressurise the victim into a marriage to save himself from the troubles of litigation and punishment.

These pronouncements underscore that in our legal system, especially the fate of a womans liberty and dignity depends on the sensitivities and the bias of a judge and his or her subjective thoughts and beliefs on what ought to have been an appropriate conduct. That, by itself, reflects a sorry state of affairs as far as womens autonomy and emancipation in India are concerned.

NASA Imaged the Bubble Around the Solar System and Yikes – Futurism

Only two manmade objects have traveled beyond the far edges of the solar system: NASAs Voyager 1 and Voyager 2.

Beyond the heliosphere, the bubble of space created by the Sun, lies the interstellar void of space between stellar systems in our galaxy.

For years, astronomers have suggested that the heliosphere is shaped like a comet, with a characteristically long tail that helps act like a shield that blocks incoming cosmic rays.

But according to new research, its shape could look far more peculiar than that: like a deflated croissant, according to a NASA statement. Less comet and more like a chewed up piece of gum, or maybe something vaguely biological from the movie Annihilation.

To construct the model, a team of astronomers took a closer look at data collected by NASAs Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). The mission analyzed energetic neutral atoms as cosmic rays travel from the Sun and outwards towards the heliopause, the theoretical boundary past which solar winds cant penetrate, some ten billion miles from Earth.

The team also considered dataabout charged particles being reflected towards the inner solar system, courtesy of NASAs Cassini mission, as well as measurements from NASAs New Horizons mission. Astronomers found that the further solar wind moved away from the Sun, it interacted with an increasing amount of material from interstellar space.

With all this data in hand, the team then got to work to come up with a 3D model of the heliosphere, as detailed in a paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy in March.

The result looks far more peculiar than the elegant comet-like shape from conventional models. Two jets shoot out of the center of this croissant, caused by the solar magnetic field. The overall shape is far smaller, rounder, and narrower than the conventional model.

Knowing the shape of the heliosphere could prove to be helpful in figuring outwhether other star systems could also be shielded by a similar bubble, and thereby harbor life. The heliosphere stops most galactic cosmic rays from penetrating through the ones that get through can prove dangerous, particularly to astronauts.

Astronomers are hopeful that NASAs upcoming Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe (IMAP) could shed more light on the actual shape of our solar systems heliosphere. The probe, slated for launch in 2024, will attempt to measure how energetic particles behave and interact with solar wind.

Woman claiming to be from ‘Freedom to Breathe Agency’ gets into viral exchange with store employee over mask policy | TheHill – The Hill

A California woman claiming to be from a group called the Freedom to Breathe Agency was seen in a viral video warning a grocery store employee in Orange County that she could face legal consequences after reportedly being told masks were required in the store.

The worker and store supervisor, Liz Chavez, told BuzzFeed News the confrontation occurred shortly after she approached the woman, who was seen along with another woman in the video donning FTBA badges and hats, about the businesss mask policy on Thursday.

"I went up to them like, 'Hey, in order to be inside the store youre required to wear a mask.' They told me, 'No, were not required to wear a mask,'" Chavez recalled to the outlet.

In footage of the moment that has racked upmillions of viewson TikTok and Twitter, the women could be seen initially handing Chavez papers and informing her of their group, which they claimed to be a "We the People" organization.

These people are attempting to intimidate essential workers by pretending to work for a bogus federal agency. pic.twitter.com/fah5T2YGi6

"So, we are with FTBA, the Freedom to Breathe Agency. We are a 'We the People' organization making sure that peoples constitutional rights, civil and federal laws are not broken," one woman, identified by BuzzFeed News as Lenka Koloma, the founder of the group, tells Chavez in the clip.

And so you personally need to take this to your manager because you personally can be sued for this OK?she continues while pointing atpiece ofpaper she handed to Chavez.

"Im just following my store policy," Chavez starts to saybefore the woman interjects, holding up her hand, saying, "I am telling you. You are probably paid $15 an hour or $12 an hour, OK?"

OK, Chavez responds.

But you are putting yourself into major legal liability, you personally, Koloma continues.

Chavez told BuzzFeed News the paper Koloma handed her was basically telling me I could go to prison for up to 3 to 5 years and I could get fined up to 10,000 dollars for telling them to wear a mask if Im not a doctor.

She added that she thinks the women werent there to shop and were probably just waiting for somebody to come up to them and ask them to wear a mask so they could do this.

The moment comes more than a month after the Department of Justice (DOJ) issued a warning about fraudulent face mask exempt cards online thatfeaturedthe agencys seal along witha symbol for the FTBA.

The card stated, I am exempt from any ordinance requiring face mask usage in public. Wearing a face posses a mental and/or physical risk to me. Under the Americans with Disability Act (ADA), I am not required to disclose my condition to you.

The card appeared to be referring to the Americans with Disabilities Act.

At the time, the department warned that such postings, cards, and flyers were not issued by the Department of Justice and are not endorsed by the Department.

U.S. Attorney Matthew Martin also cautioned the public in a statement then not to be fooled by the chicanery and misappropriation of the DOJ eagle, saying, These cards do not carry the force of law. The Freedom to Breathe Agency, or FTBA, is not a government agency.

In interview with BuzzFeed News, Koloma called the Freedom to Breathe Agency a legitimate organization and said theres nothing illegal or fraudulent.

She also claimed she and the woman she was seen with in the store dont wear masks, despite California issuing a statewide mask mandate in Juneto curb the spread of COVID-19, because both of them have medical, health conditions and also religious beliefs that do not allow us to wear a mask. She reportedly would not divulge further details about her condition to BuzzFeed News.

Chavez said she doesnt know why wearing a mask is such a big deal for some customers.

"They just give us all sorts of excuses for why they shouldnt wear one. ... We have to wear them for out entire shift, they only have to wear them for the 10, 20 minutes theyre in the store, she said.

I just want to say people really need to be nice to these grocery workers, we work our butts off during this pandemic. Just give us a little break, its just our store policies, were following the rules. We dont need to be attacked every day, she added to the outlet.

COVID19: Is there freedom in silence? – Financial Mirror

There has been too much talk in recent weeks about naming names and shaming offenders who break the laws about health and safety, imposed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Despite starting well and the public adhering to personal safety rules, complacency seems to have kicked-in, especially after the infection numbers dropped to single-digit levels and were near zero for a while.

With the resurgence of fake news and online doctors arguing the merits of wearing a facial mask, this became part of a greater conspiracy with the state hell-bent on watching our every move, even chipping us to monitor what we say and do.

Members of the public are embarrassed to keep their mask on, many sitting in crowded cafs, breathing into each others face.

Waiters have their mask hanging off their chin, very often without gloves and a thumb protruding on the plate that is about to be served.

There is a 300 fine imposed on individuals who do not respect these rules, with businesses facing a heftier penalty 10 times that amount, and the law implemented not too often.

Why, then, if national health is also a matter of national security, can we not name and shame those arrogant few who think that by bending the rules, nothing will happen?

It makes one wonder what logic lies behind the decision of the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry to issue a warning to the media calling for the naming of COVID-infected establishments to be avoided.

Is KEVE the new media czar that wants to curb freedom of the press while incapable of doing anything that will upset the hundreds of naysayers and health risk deniers on social media?

A similar unfortunate statement came from the Justice Ministry, that has appeared weak in taking a firm decision on how to deal with the irresponsible woman who is known to have infected at least two dozen people with the coronavirus, knowing she was positive, yet going ahead with organising parties for large crowds, creating a chain and cluster.

The ministry said it was waiting for a report from the health services to decide if there is a case to be prosecuted, in other words, passing the buck for political blame onto others.

In the public eye, the ministry has dragged its feet and failed to calm concerns that well-do individuals with financial or political clout can get away with anything, even the criminal act of knowingly infecting others with a deadly virus.

Instead, it could have acted promptly from the moment that the case became known, and at least seem to be harsh in its use of words.

There is a fine line between freedom of speech, freedom of expression and press freedoms, and these freedoms could go both ways.

If someone neglects to deal with issues related to national health, therefore national security, then it is up to the media to raise these issues, sometimes even helping the authorities by revealing some truths.

By letting this woman get away with it, while jailing a young man for violating the first day of lockdown curfew to see his fiance, simply fuels the argument that it is who you know in Cyprus that is important, and not what you do or say.
