Top 10 Casino Affiliate Programs for 2020 | Big Money Makers

Casino affiliate programs are what we would call a win-win situation. By splitting the workload of finding new customers, both casinos and affiliates can mutually benefit. The basics of how it works couldnt be simpler.

The affiliate provides a link to the casino: they get a new customer and the affiliate gets paid for providing them with that customer. So, say you're a player looking for the best UK real money slots an affiliate will do all the homework and point you to the casinos which deliver. Of course, the specifics are a touch more complicated than that, but not by too much.

At their most basic, casino affiliate programs are very easy to understand. Any link that directs traffic to a third-party website in exchange for revenue is an affiliate deal, or affiliate referral. Simple, right?

Only, there is a lot more to it than that. Especially in todays sophisticated world of iGaming, where many operators and other service providers work via casino affiliate programs. Most iGaming companies, in fact, attract many new and returning customers after these are directed to them from other websites through affiliate agreements with the owners of said websites.

The whole system works on the basis of trust while keeping both the operators and the affiliates happy. The affiliates provide a useful service informing interested customers about the best casinos to play at, presenting them with a carefully-curated list of options that all enjoy the trust of the affiliate recommending them.

Such casino affiliate programs are the top reason why you dont often see online casinos advertised in the normal manner. Affiliate deals ensure that the information is relayed to the target market in a non-invasive manner that is likely to generate more interest. This is usually achieved through content that engages the imagination of the customer, such as useful casino reviews, the latest welcome packages, information about special casino promotions and so forth.

Most casino affiliate programs come with standard industry clauses and terms and understanding these certainly helps paint a clearer picture. The following are some of the terms you are likely to encounter with respect to affiliate networks.

Most casino affiliate programs involve a monthly payment based on the amount of clicks/leads that you generated. In the case of iGaming, the most common format is the number of players that were directed to a particular casino from the referring affiliate.

The numbers are calculated at the end of the month, and a payment issued. However, picture this scenario: lets say that, as an affiliate, you referred a player who happened to make a killing on the slots last month. This players winnings will affect your account with the casino, as the winnings are marked as losses on your account.

The majority of casinos will deduct these winnings from the commission that is owed to you this is what is called a Negative Carryover. Now imagine that at the end of the month, you are owed $1000 in commission. One of the players you directed to the casino won $2,000. With Negative Carryover, your account with the casino becomes -$1,000, which means that you will not be paid anything until the balance goes into the black again.

So, essentially, if an affiliate is unlucky enough to be responsible for a mega win, in theory it may be a very long time before it starts making money from that casino again, even though it may be directing customers to the website in the meantime.

Some casino websites waive the Negative Carryover and will reset an affiliates balance to zero every month naturally, these are the most lucrative deals.

Thanks to the recent GDPR updates, we are now all familiar with the idea of computer cookies, and the fact that they have nothing to do with the nicer cookies we snack on. How can cookies affect a casino affiliate program?

The answer is simple: a casino keeps track of which customer came from which site via the cookie that is stored on the clients computer and that tracks the referral.

Sadly, cookies do not come with an unlimited lifespan. Most are set to an expiry limit of 30 days, which basically means that if you send a player to an affiliate website and for example they make a first deposit within 30 days, you will receive a commission for the referral.

What happens when the deposit happens after 30 days? Does this mean you dont get any revenue? If that were the case, the situation would be very unfair. The cookie lifespan can be changed to a custom number by the Affiliate Manager. Unfortunately, theres no such thing as an unlimited lifespan, but the cookie can be set to an extremely high number so that it doesnt actually expire. The one thats most quoted is 30,000 which is very close to a 100 years and should keep you in good revenue for a long time.

This is another term that you will commonly encounter as part of casino affiliate programs. As soon as a customer clicks on an affiliates referral URL and deposits money, their identity is instantly connected to the affiliate. This means that, when the same customer returns to that website, the linked affiliate once again gets the credit and earns a commission. This is true even when the customer goes to the website directly.

This system works because a customer can only be linked to one affiliate. In this way, the affiliate pretty much gets a lifetime deal and, throughout the customers lifetime, any money spent on that website will earn the affiliate commission.

How is the affiliate revenue calculated? This depends on the specific agreement, but the standard method is via a commission system. There are several ways in which this commission may be calculated.

Revenue-share If the referral agreement is based on a revenue-share model, the affiliate will receive a percentage of the casinos net revenue generated by referred players. This tends to be the model most favoured by affiliates, because it translates into long-term income.

From the point of view of the operators, it also works well as affiliates have all the motivation to attract quality players who will generate constant revenue for the casino. Percentages vary, of course, and most operators will negotiate individually with the affiliates. Typically, the agreement would range between 5% and 50%.

The longer the working relationship and the more trusted the affiliate, the higher the commission tends to be, and when an affiliate is really good at what they do the perks (such as no negative carryover) kick in.

Cost per action When an affiliate program is based on this model, this means that the operator is offering a fixed rate for every player. The deal can include a reward for registration only, for first deposits, for satisfying wagering requirements, for second deposits and so forth. Once again, the percentage depends on the individual agreements that are negotiated.

Mixed models Negotiation is king in the world of referral programs. Most operators will have a team of people to negotiate a casino affiliate program. The team will typically also pull all the stops to makes sure they entice the operator into offering the best deal possible.

Mixed models can include every type of revenue mentioned above, and maybe some more customised options too. In reality, the most popular model is a combination of revenue sharing and CPA, as this guarantees that both operator and affiliate are kept satisfied with the casino affiliate program.

Of course, in order to have a strong business relationship, you need to find the program that is right for you. Well, the good news is there is no shortage of excellent affiliate programs out there, with more appearing all the time. They all have their own quirks and advantages, meaning that while some affiliate programs are better than others, whatever is best for you comes down to your personal tastes.

With that in mind, were going to look at 10 examples of excellent affiliate programs to give you an idea of how to get started.

Fortune Jack has been operating in the casinos business for over 20 years. Partnering up with them on an affiliate program is as reliable as it gets. For these guys, the name of the game is quality. Their referral agreements aim to offer the best quality to their affiliate partners and they expect these partner to return the favour. A tall order, but this operators reputation warrants confidence.

You will only find the very top referral programs on this list, and GVC Affiliates certainly belong here. Affiliate network deals will give access to the top promotions offered by the brands (f.e. bwin, sportingbet, PartyCasino and more) and operate on the basis of revenue share. This means that affiliates will earn a percentage of the monthly revenue generated by players referred.

Moreover, the more players referred, the higher the percentage you earnt. As soon as you reach the 300 player mark, the percentage jumps up to 35%. GVC is also willing to discuss CPA plans on an individual basis.

One thing to look out for is the fact that this operator works with a main product system. You will need to choose a main product for your tracker, one that works best with your content and that you can actively promote. However, if a player referred by an affiliate ends up using a different product, you still get what they refer to as a crossover revenue. In this case, the CPA percentage works a little bit differently, so do make sure you go through the terms and conditions.

Another highly-respected game in iGaming circles, and its easy to see why. Casumo has a reputation for high player conversion, which makes it the ideal affiliate partner. Loyal players mean a constant stream of revenue with (almost) zero effort on the part of the affiliate. Commission percentages go up to a very alluring 45% as soon as you reach 40 depositing players a month.

As soon as youre on the referral programme, you will be a lifetime partner as long as your player keeps playing and spending money, you will continue getting your cut. And, whats more, youll get it by the first week of the month. No dilly-dallying.

Negative balances are not carried forward from one month to another, so theres another plus for you.

10 Best Casino Affiliate Programs of 2020 – Authority Hacker

This roundup is going to shake things up a little bit because we look at some of the best casino affiliate programs out there.

And when we say casino we mean in the online sense and not the Las Vegas hotel sense.

There are affiliates who treat the online gambling niche as being completely taboo.

And there are affiliates who make ludicrous amounts of money promoting programs in this niche.

Which route you take is entirely up to you were just here to inform you.

Like the fact that this industry is going to be worth north of US$90 billion by 2024.

Or that many states in the US prohibit online gamblingbut there are ways around this.

And that theres one specific provision in some casino affiliate programs that you need to watch out for.

Intrigued?

You should be.

Youll have three choices when getting paid by these programs:

Most programs only offer a revenue sharing payment model, which is fine on the surface of things.

But you need to watch out for something called Negative Carryover.

With revenue share, when your player loses big you win big.

If, however, they win big then you lose big.

This leaves you with a negative balance on your affiliate account.

Some affiliate programs will wipe this negative balance clean at the end of the monthbut not all of them.

Always, always read the fine print, my friends.

Now, lets get to the programs themselves.

Youll find multiple casino brands operating under the Betsson umbrella, including Betsafe, Casino.dk and Star Casino.

Theyve been in the casino game now for over 50 years, so youre dealing with an established brand.

Players can choose from dozens of classic slots and table games or a range of live casino games.

One note here is that theyre focused on the European market, which means US players are out of luck.

Their affiliate program operates on a revenue share basis, and you can also get paid for signing up sub-affiliates.

If you have plenty of skin in this niche you can apply for their exclusive CPA program, where you get paid once for all new players/depositors.

Gambling Affiliates – The Truth About Affiliate Earnings

Here are my credentials to write this article. Ive been an online gambling affiliate for about 7 years, I have earned placement for one of my affiliate sites in the top 20 poker affiliate sites for US customers, and I was a moderator of the largest poker affiliate forum.

Net earnings are in the (removed for privacy reasons).

Even being an affiliate for what I consider to be a long time, when you take into account the immaturity and relatively short life of online gambling, Im still amazed at how much smart gaming affiliates earn.

There are so many ways and categories poker affiliates can be put in, from incentive-based, to rakeback, to bonus scalpers, to the plain-jane affiliate.

As I go through these numbers with you, bear in mind that many affiliates are into different verticals.

For example, Ive taken what I know from being a poker affiliate and applied it to casino sites, mixed martial arts, boxing, football, and other forms of betting as well.

Super Poker and Casino Affiliate Earnings

While theres no true definition of a super affiliate, I use this title sparingly. Its difficult to categorize one as a super affiliate based on revenues, because one player alone can put you into that category.

In general, a super affiliate in my mind runs a website that most other affiliates in the industry know by name, follow, and for monetary purposes make a minimum of $100,000 per month in revenues. Despite falling into this category, Ive never tagged myself a super affiliate, because I see so many others doing WAY better than I do.

What Do Affiliates Really Earn?

Its not exactly something most people say for fear of giving away too much information to their competition. Luckily for most people, they have multiple sites, and the ones that look like they generate the least probably generate the most.

Poker and casino affiliate sites can be very deceptive like that.

Okay, so you probably want numbers by now. I can only go off what Ive heard through the grapevine and experienced myself. Without revealing his website, about four years ago I heard of a one-man affiliate who ranked for just about all the lucrative keywords in Google, and he was earning approximately $500,000 per month.

While he had hundreds of websites, most of them were used as feeders to his main sites (he had about three at that time). He has since fallen, and others have taken his place in Google, but Im sure with ongoing revenue share and other ventures, hes probably still in the same area, if not more.

While I wont go into exact details of my personal monthly earnings, I will say that Ive come close to the mark stated above, but it was an extraordinary month and most of the revenues were from very large casino earnings resulting from only a few players.

Larger Corporate Affiliates

The days following the UIGEA resulted in a bizarre event. The money that changed hands during that period was truly amazing, because people sold their sites for almost nothing, basically giving them away. Sites worth millions these days sold for the low 6 figures.

This allowed certain companies to scoop them up for low prices and become huge corporations.

Again, sites like PokerListings are large corporations, and websites like PokerStrategy or PokerSource are run by dozens of employees so their revenues absolutely exceed $1,000,000 a month.

The now-deceased founder of PokerListings (Andreas Oscarsson, who was killed in his home) was heard over some beers saying that he was making over a million a month, and that was a few years back.

I personally dont attend these gambling affiliate conferences, because I simply dont care to. PokerListings has since grown into a mega monster dominating almost all keywords and holding various domains and making very large sums in all sorts of industries.

Then you get into rakeback affiliate sites. While I never really cared to learn about rakeback, I do know the largest rakeback site is raketherake (owned by Karim Wilkins), and it apparently dominates that poker niche. Since its inception in 2004 through the mid part of 2009, it generated $56 million in rake for its players.

Rakeback affiliates are generally left with a margin of 8%-15% of what their players generate, which is why I find the number above to be kind of weak.

Assuming he made an average of 15%, he would have generated gross revenues of $10,000,000 for the five years. Not bad, but not great for a super affiliate. The dollar amount is actually calculated on their website in real time.

Dont Be Mislead

Personally, I have nothing to gain from telling you that the poker, casino, or the sports market is unsaturated, since Im not selling you on anything. The people that tell you this are either bad at what they do, ortheyare trying to posture in order to keep the competition down.

In fact, we put up an affiliate website a month ago, and it already earns 5 figures a month. Like most things, its not difficult, but it does take a lot of knowledge, luck, and persistence.

I dont claim any of this information to be 100% accurate.

In fact, the CEO of WickedFire claimed he knew an affiliate who was earning $15,000,000 per month. I claim 100% BS, but who really knows?

As I said, the numbers in this article are usually just people running their mouth, like we all do sometimes. This article was meant to be a rough guide for the affiliate side of the gambling sites.

Earning Polls and Stats

Heres a small collection of polls and stats for monthly revenues.

These are earnings for one sportsbook affiliate site. They are the top 5 affiliate earners for this particular sportsbook, plus they are probably doing very well at other sites they promote.

Take note that earnings usually double during the time of American football season. This was before football betting season.

This was a small poll taken sometime in 2008. Its mostly poker affiliates with some hybrid affiliates who promote casinos and poker rooms. This was monthly earnings. The poll is off because I know of a few affiliates in the top categories that obviously didnt vote.

Again, as you can see, the earnings for the top 5 affiliates are quite high, in the 6 figures for one program. This was for sportsbook.com, but many affiliates now promote their poker site and casino as well.

Donald Trump denies asking how to add face to Mount Rushmore – The Guardian

Donald Trump has denied that his team ever approached South Dakotas governor about adding his face to the iconic monument depicting four presidents at Mount Rushmore. However, he added that it sounded like a good idea.

The New York Times reported a Republican party official source on Saturday stating that a White House aide reached out to Kristi Noems office with the question: Whats the process to add additional presidents to Mount Rushmore?

Thanks to the angle of some of the photographs taken when Trump visited the memorial in July, it isnt necessary to Photoshop what it might look like. Trump posed in such a way that he effectively added himself as a fifth figure on the monument.

According to reports, the governor had greeted Trump on his recent visit to South Dakota with a 1.2 metre replica of the monument that already included his face as a fifth element.

In a 2018 interview, Noem stated that the two had struck up a conversation about the sculpture in the Oval Office the first time they had met. She claims that she said to him: Mr President, you should come to South Dakota some time. We have Mount Rushmore, and that he replied: Do you know its my dream to have my face on Mount Rushmore?

I started laughing, she said in the interview. He wasnt laughing, so he was totally serious.

The president used the sculpture earlier this year as the backdrop for a showy Independence Day display, which drew protests from Native American activists, who view the monument as a desecration of land violently stolen from them and used to pay homage to leaders hostile to native people. On the night he gave a divisive speech claiming that the US was under siege from far-left fascism.

The four presidents depicted on Mount Rushmore were chosen in the 1920s by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum for their leadership during what were seen then as the four phases of America: George Washington leading the birth of the nation; Thomas Jefferson sparking its westward expansion; Abraham Lincoln preserving the union and emancipating slaves; Teddy Roosevelt championing industrial innovation.

Construction ended in 1941 when funds ran out originally the presidents were designed to be depicted from head to waist.

Trump has previously joked about adding his face to the monument during an Ohio rally in 2017, using it as the basis for an attack on the media. Now heres what Id do, Trump said. Id ask whether or not you some day think I will be on Mount Rushmore. If I did it joking totally joking, having fun the fake news media will say, He believes he should be on Mount Rushmore. So I wont say it.

‘Unconstitutional slop:’ Donald Trump spars with Ben Sasse, the GOP senator who attacked his executive order – USA TODAY

The orders Trump signed would provide an extra $400 in unemployment benefits, suspend some student loan payments and protect renters from eviction. Wochit

WASHINGTON Seeking to tamp down Republican criticism of his new executive orders on the economy, President Donald Trump attacked GOP senator Ben Sasse on Monday as "Republican In Name Only" the same senator who attacked his actions as "unconstitutional slop."

"RINO Ben Sasse, who needed my support and endorsement in order to get the Republican nomination for Senate from the GREAT State of Nebraska, has, now that hes got it (Thank you President T), gone rogue, again," Trump said in a tweet with complex sentence structure.

Sasse used a vivid metaphor todenounce Trump's new executive orders, comparing them to the ones President Barack Obama used to blockdeportation ofchildren of parents who had entered the country illegally.

The pen-and-phone theory of executive lawmaking is unconstitutional slop," Sasse said shortly after Trump signed the orders on Saturday.

Sasse, a member of both the Senate Judiciary and Finance committees, said Obama "did not have the power to unilaterally rewrite immigration law" and Trump "does not have the power to unilaterally rewrite the payroll tax law."

Trump and his aides said they still hope they can reach agreement with Congress on a new stimulus bill to address the economic problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sasse and other lawmakers, mostly Democrats, questioned the legality and wisdom of the Trump executive orders that are designed to extend unemployment insurance, prevent evictions, suspend student loan payments, and encourage employers to defer certain payroll taxes through the end of the year.

One question is whether there is enough money available to cover Trump's plans, analysts said, and another is whether states and private employers are in a position to help fulfill the plan as requested.

Trump's orders would reduce unemployment benefits from $600 to $400 a week, but it also calls on cash-strapped states to finance 25% of the these costs.

Also, employers are under no obligation to stop withholdingthe payroll tax as called for in the executive orders and legislators in both parties pointed out that those taxes finance Social Security and Medicare, programs they said would be weakened under Trump's scheme.

The orders also do not extend a moratorium on evictions, they only ask government agencies to look for ways to avoid to dislodging renters who have fallen behind on their payments.

There are also questions as to whether any president has legal authority to do any of this, said Sasse and others.

"Under the Constitution, that power belongs to the American people acting through their members of Congress," Sasse said.

Trump has brushed aside these criticism.

"This foolishness plays right into the hands of the Radical Left Dems!" Trump tweeted.

Dow jumps 250 points to start week even as White House, Congress battle over coronavirus relief – CNBC

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rallied on Monday even amid uncertainty over a new coronavirus stimulus package.

The 30-stock Dow advanced 237 points, or 0.9%. Boeing and Nike were the best-performing stocks in the Dow, rising 4.6% and 4.2%, respectively. Bank stocks such as JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs also contributed to the Dow's gains. JPMorgan Chase advanced 2.1% and Goldman climbed 0.9%.

However, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite struggled as traders trimmed positions in Big Tech stocks. The S&P 500 traded just below the flatline while the Nasdaq slid about 1%. Facebook and Netflix shares slid at least 2% each along with Microsoft. Amazon dipped 1.5% and Alphabet fell 0.9%.

President Donald Trump signed several executive orders over the weekend aimed at extending coronavirus relief.

Those orders continue the distribution of expanded unemployment benefits, defer student loan payments through 2020and provide a payroll tax holiday. However, the unemployment benefit will be continued at a reduced rate of $400 per week. Originally, the benefit provided workers impacted by the pandemic with $600 per week.

"While this move by Trump may lead to legal challenges, politically it puts pressure on Congress to reach a deal," wrote Bill Stone, chief investment officer at Stone Investment Partners.

Trump's moves come after congressional leaders failed to make progress on a new coronavirus stimulus package last week. Several benefits from a package signed earlier in the year lapsed at the end of July, raising uncertainty about the U.S. economy moving forward.

Still, Trump's orders face a legal challenge as continuing the programs would require federal funding, which Congress controls.Democrats have insisted they will not support a bill that does not extend the $600 per week benefit.

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin told CNBC's "Squawk on the Street" he is open to more stimulus talks, noting: "We're prepared to put more money on the table."

"The fiscal cliff still represents downside risk for August," said Aneta Markowska, chief financial economist at Jefferies. Markowska added, however, any weakness from this will be "short-lived."

"By September, another round of fiscal support will create positive momentum. The reopening of schools, even if only in some states, will reinforce the positive momentum by (1) boosting back-to-school shopping and (2) allowing more parents to return to work in September," she said in a note to clients. "Bottom line, all the stars are lining up for another inflection point in activity and a second leg up in the reopening."

Wall Street was coming off a strong weekly performance. The Dow rose 3.8% last week for its biggest weekly gain since June. The S&P 500 climbed 2.5% along with the Nasdaq Composite. Last week's gains come during a historically tough time for the market as August kicks off the worst three-month stretch for the S&P 500.

Those gains were led in part by Facebook, Apple and Microsoft, all of which rose by more than 3% last week. They also left the S&P 500 just 1.2% below its Feb. 19 record high.

Investors also kept an eye on the worsening relationship between the U.S. and China. On Monday, China said it would apply sanctions against 11 U.S. citizens including senators Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio. The move is a retaliation against Washington's sanctions on 11 Hong Kong and Chinese officials for curtailing political freedoms in the city.

Why Stuart Stevens Wants to Defeat Donald Trump – The New Yorker

Well, you cant argue with that, O.K.? Whether or not Romney could have taken the Party in a more productive, rational fiscal policy, well never know. I say this in the book, and I think its pretty much inarguable, the idea of so-called trickle-down economics has proved to be nonsense.

Do you think Paul Ryan and Mitt Romney and George W. Bush think its nonsense?

I cant speak for them.

How do you understand his 2012 campaignthat Romney met with Trumpand things like this?

Listen, both those candidates had fifty per cent favorables. Romney got a lot of criticism for not going far enough on stuff. If you go back to the foreign-policy debate, he was criticized for not trying to make Benghazi the center of all evil. In the Republican primary, I remember this well, there was one of those awful raise-your-hand questions: Who believes Barack Obama is a socialist? Mitt Romney was the only person who didnt raise his hand.

He did write a book called No Apology, presenting Obama as some sort of foreign-policy radical.

I think there were huge failures with Barack Obamas foreign policy. I really dont know how anybody would argue with that. You could argue that those failures were inevitable, but you cant look at Syria, the greatest human-rights tragedy in the post-World War Two world, and not think that it was a tremendous, horrible failure. You can sustain two beliefs. I can. One, that Barack Obama is a decent human being, and if Barack Obama were President today the country would be better off. I say that without hesitation, while admitting that there were failures. I think that there was a failure on Obamacare not to be able to come to some greater ability to have both parties support part of it. And probably what we should have done on Obamacare is divide it into pieces. I think its governmentally problematic when you have one party pass it.

He did pass a version of Mitt Romneys health-care plan, but let me ask you, Are you in touch with Romney?

I talk to Senator Romney some. Mainly about books were reading and just stuff going on in mutual friends lives. You know, the impeachment, for example, I had no idea how he would vote. The stuff that I talk to him about is more like personal stuff.

Do you think that Romney or Bush will endorse Joe Biden? Do you think that they should?

I would be very surprised if they do. I think, particularly, for an ex-President the roles that they playI mean, theres a lot of talk about why didnt President Obama weigh in more in the primary. I think it is a unique role that has serious gravity.

I would be very surprised if Senator Romney endorsed him. My experience with Romney is pretty much that on the record and off the record is the same these days. What he said is that he intends to do what he did last time. I think thats what hell do.

Does that disappoint you in any way?

No. I think Mitt Romney has been heroic. I think the eternal shame of most of these Republicans is going to be, why didnt we follow Mitt Romney? I mean, Mitt Romney went out [against Trump] in March of 2016, and, had the Republican Party rallied around him, we could have saved ourselves from this incredible debacle and disgrace and humiliation.

Did you ever figure out what his whole Secretary of State flirtation thing was? Do you think that was just trying to be an adult in the room?

I pretty much know what it was about, because I talked to him then. I think its pretty much what you would thinkthat theres a greater duty to the country, and I think he thought that, out of respect for the office and the process, he should talk to Donald Trump. I think hes very glad that he was never asked to be Secretary of State, because I think it would have been the shortest Secretary of State tenure in history. I dont think he would have lasted two months.

Why are Southerners attracted to Donald Trump?

Its a question Ive asked myself a lot, because in many ways Donald Trump is the caricature of the rich Yankee that were always warned about, who has no manners, no respect for anyone, including women, who is crass, and values money over everything. Thats Donald Trump, and hes pretty much wildly popular with a lot of polite Southerners. I think that there is a perception of Donald Trump as a fighter that appeals to a Southern Scotch-Irish tradition that loves to fight. I think there was a sense that he was politically incorrect and would tell the establishment, Screw you. At the same time, in a lot of these states he did worse than Mitt Romney did. In many ways, Mitt Romney was an unusual fit being a Mormon and also being from Massachusetts. I think that theres a lot of reluctance.

Ive found the Roy Moore thing both the most inspiring and depressing event, because you say, What would it take to get white Republicans to vote for a Democratic moderate? You say, O.K., what if the Republican was a child molester? [In 2018, the Democrat Doug Jones defeated Moore in the race for a U.S. Senate seat, after Moore denied reports that he had made sexual advances toward underage girls in the seventies.] The positive isand not for the first timethat Alabama was saved by African-Americans and saved by, particularly, African-American women. And saved by evangelicals. You know, one of the things that drives me absolutely crazy is we talk about evangelicals and say Trump is popular with evangelicals, and thats not true. Trump is popular with white evangelicals.

Same with the way we talk about the working class.

Exactly.

The Lincoln Project ads have obviously been very effective in getting a lot of press. Do you think that theyre aimed more at lites to signal the Republican opposition to Trump, or are you really trying to get voters to switch? Im not saying the first is necessarily unimportant, but whats the goal?

I think there are multiple purposes here, and I think the purposes are shifting as the Lincoln Project starts spending more money on television. I think, in part, theyve existed to give permission to others to say what needs to be said that isnt being said. Look, Im just kind of a backup singer in the Lincoln Project. It wasnt my creation. Im playing rhythm guitar on this thing. But not having a client is very liberating. You dont have to worry that if you go too far, its going to blow back on your client, because you dont have a client. I think that part of the role that the project has been able to play is to say what people are thinking, but you really cant say that out loud. You say it out loud, and I think thats positive, and I think it moves the needle of discussion. I think that it helps the Biden campaign.

I know that Trumpworld gives every indication of being obsessed with the Lincoln Project, and then its a joke when they attack us. Are you crazy? I mean, were not running for President. Thats a day that theyre not focussed on the Biden campaign.

6 workers at Bratenahl club where Donald Trump appeared test positive for coronavirus, but didnt encounter t – cleveland.com

CLEVELAND, Ohio Six people who work at the Bratenahl club that hosted President Donald Trump on Thursday tested positive for COVID-19 coronavirus but were not at the club to encounter the president.

The Cuyahoga County Board of Health and the Shoreby Club each confirmed the positive tests on Friday and offered assurances that the workers posed no hazard to the president.

Any food with which they might have come in contact was discarded, club General Manager Buddy Kane said in a letter to members. The club, meanwhile, was closed Friday and will be sanitized.

The employees were tested Thursday morning off-site as part of preparations for the event. All were asymptomatic, Kane said in the letter to members.

It is unclear yet, though, how many of the employees actually did contract the virus, Dr. Heidi Gullett, medical director for the county Board of Health, said during a Friday media briefing.

The employees were given a rapid positive antigen test, which yields results quickly, but also can yield false positives.

That was the case for Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who was scheduled to welcome the president to Cleveland, but instead returned to his home in Cedarville after getting a positive result from that test.

DeWine later tested negative when a more sensitive test called a polymerase chain reaction, or PCR test, which detects genetic material from the new coronavirus, was administered at a Columbus hospital.

Kane, in his letter, said that those who tested positive will also be retested. Gullett, in the briefing Friday, said the six are not counted as confirmed cases at this point.

None were at the event Thursday evening when Trump spoke at the private fundraiser.

The event was Trumps first trip to Ohio since January. Entry started at $5,600 per person. A photo and entry to the reception went for $35,000 and all that plus entry to a roundtable event cost $100,000, according to the campaign posting.

Earlier in the day, at an appearance in Clyde, Ohio, the president tried to soften the blow of the coronavirus pandemic, saying it would be over sooner than people think.

The Trump campaign did not respond to a question about whether anyone attending the event might have tested positive.

Kane, in his letter, said he was meeting with the Board of Health staff for guidance, which the club would follow.

Pardon me, Sirs, Mahama couldn’t have been Ghana’s economic Messiah, could he? – GhanaWeb

Opinions of Monday, 10 August 2020

Columnist: Kwaku Badu

John Dramani Mahama

Some of us, so to speak, were extremely dumbfounded listening to the Minority Caucuss 2020 electioneering campaign on Asempa FM on Thursday 6th August 2020, in which the NDC faithful gleefully sought to portray their flagbearer, Mahama, as the best custodian of Ghanas economy (emphasis mine).

But contrary to NDC operatives assertion, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has concluded in its 2019 country report that former President John Dramani Mahama will find it extremely difficult to convince discerning Ghanaians into accepting that he is the preferable manager of Ghanas economy, given his abysmal performance and the countrys fairly strong economic growth under President Akufo-Addo (see: 2020 election is yours to lose-EIU predicts NPP victory; myjoyonline.com/ghanaweb.com, 15/09/2019).

There is no gainsaying in stressing forcefully that following former President Mahamas election as NDCs 2020 flagbearer, the crucial questions the vast majority of Ghanaians have been asking somewhat poignantly are: can the NDCs Messiah redeem us from the supposedly bad governance? And, can the NDCs Messiah take us to the promise land?

Dearest reader, if you may remember, subsequent to former President Mahamas ponderous announcement of his intention to join the NDCs 2020 flagbearership race, several prominent NDC members and well-wishers came out and expressed grave concerns over the ex-presidents somewhat weird decision.

In fact, prominent people like Nunoo Mensah, Kojo Yankah, Ambassador Osei, amongst others suggested to Mahama to rescind his somewhat idiosyncratic decision.

What is more, the likes of Mr Bagbin, the MP for Nadoli Kaleo and the Mahamas competitor for the 2019 NDCs flagbearership race attributed the humiliating defeat of Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2016 general elections to bad governance (See: Mahama's boys bought V8, built mansions in 4 years Bagbin; myjoyonline.com/ghanaweb.com, 19/08/2018).

Back then, Mr Bagbin was reported to have quizzed passionately: Dont tell me that the boys that suddenly came closer to the president within four years can build mansions and buy land cruisers and you say there are no resources, where are they getting the money, their salaries?

The NDC stalwarts concerns stemmed from the fact that Ghanaians rejected former President Mahama massively in the 2016 election and therefore it will be politically suicidal for anyone to clamour for his return.

More so, the founder of NDC, former President Rawlings never agreed with the teeming supporters who were blindly clamouring for the return of the losing horses.

Take, for instance, prior to the 2016 electioneering campaign, we witnessed how the conspicuously unhappy former President Rawlings kept grumbling, shrieking and raising concerns about the rampant sleazes and corruption in the erstwhile NDC administration led by former President Mahama.

Ex-President Rawlings thus lamented: The principles of June 4 are not alien or has never been alien to mankind. They are no different from the most basic religious or human values. Probity, accountability and social justice would on any day liberate the overwhelming majority of our people from the bondage or difficulties they find themselves in.

The fight against corruption, greed and avarice has however been at great cost. Noble soldiers have died; noble civilians have died for it and so many of the noble ones have suffered and continue to suffer all kinds of indignities for their principles and convictions.

I want to remind people that we could not have possibly forgotten that Generals were executed. The greed, corruption and injustice of today is a thousand times more than what these Generals were executed for, and if we are unable to restore a firm measure of integrity into our dealings, then the blood of many would have been shed in vain.

Not too long ago I thought we heard the jockeys claiming the horses were responsible for this disgraceful failure while one of the horses was bold enough to lay the failure at the doorstep of the jockeys.

For me, we lost our masses because we betrayed the values of June 4. However if this horse jockey business cannot be resolved comprehensively, allowing integrity to prevail, then let both of them step aside and allow for fresh leaders with solid integrity to provide the needed leadership (Rawlings 2017; myjoyonline.com).

The all-important question we should be asking then is: who are the fresh leaders with solid integrity in NDC then?

Despite the critics irrevocable incertitude over Mahamas suitability to lead the country again, the NDC Delegates strangely gave Mahama the nod of affirmation to lead the party to the 2020 general elections.

But to the reflective critics, it is somewhat baffling to see former President Mahama and his apologists moving heaven and earth to return to the presidency almost four years after being voted out of power by discerning Ghanaians for his dreadful errors in judgement which brought about massive economic collapse.

In truth, the other contestants of the NDCs 2019 flagbearership race emitted vehemently that former President Mahama was the main reason NDC lost the 2016 election.

Unsurprisingly, however, a multitude of supporters within the NDC were in solidarity with the concerned presidential aspirants. The concerned supporters dreaded the talk of former President Mahama returning as the NDCs 2020 flagbearer.

Therefore, it came as no surprise at all when a group of organisers within the opposition NDC urged the National Executives of the party to allow Mr Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin to go unopposed in the 2019 flagbearership contest (See: Alban Bagbin must go unopposed NDC organisers; ghananewsagency.org/ghanaweb.com, 12/03/2018).

Back then, the spokesperson for the group, insisted somewhat vehemently that since corruption would be a key campaign theme in 2020, and the fact that former President Mahama administration had issues with corruption, Ghanaian voters would be forced to reject him if he (Mahama) was to be elected as the next flagbearer.

Suffice it to state that even though the loyalists of the other presidential aspirants held the preponderance of the argument about former President Mahamas unsuitability for the 2020 flagbearership position, the diehard supporters somehow succeeded in their quest to have him as their presidential candidate.

It would, therefore, appear that the vast majority of the NDC loyalists have been living in a denial about former President Mahamas unpopularity and hence choosing him over the other presidential aspirants.

It is also quite ironic that despite Mahamas unpardonable coarse governance which brought about his humiliating defeat in the 2016 election, the Mahama loyalists are holding an elusive hope that they can present him and recapture power from NPP in 2020.

Whatever the case, I, for one, do not envision former President Mahamas imminent return to the presidency, judging from the dreadful errors in decision-making which brought about the huge economic collapse.

Let us face it, though, the unbridled corruption, the arrogance of power and the irreversible incompetence which culminated in economic collapse are still fresh in the memories of discerning Ghanaians.

Unfortunately, however, the brassbound Mahama loyalists do not want to acknowledge the fact that Ghanas economy was in such a terrible state because a large portion of the countrys scarce resources went down the drain from the mismanagement and the wanton sleazes and corruption perpetrated by the officials of the erstwhile Mahama administration.

There is no gainsaying the fact that discerning Ghanaians cannot so soon forget the harsh economic conditions the Mahama government wilfully imposed on them. Indeed, those sad memories will long be stencilled on the mental sheets of discerning Ghanaians.

The all-important question one may ask the brassbound Mahama supporters is: where is the justification about former President Mahamas ability to steer Ghana to the right direction when a GH9.5 billion debt former President Kufuor left in 2009 rocketed to an incredible GH122.4 billion in just eight years?

How can the diehard supporters convince some of us about former President Mahamas capability to lead Ghana again when he woefully shrunk Ghanas GDP from $47 billion to $40 billion in five years?

How could Mahama supporters justify former President Mahamas suitability to lead the nation again when he abysmally dragged an economic growth of around 14 % in 2011 to a squeamish 3.4 % as of December 2016?

Didnt the much touted economic Messiah drag single digit inflation in 2012 to double figures by 2016(15.8%)?

By and large, the successive NDC governments have proven to be worst economic managers who can never improve upon the socio-economic standards of living of Ghanaians.

Whichever way you may choose to place the issue under discussion, Mahama has never been Ghanas economic Messiah, and some of us, as a matter of principle, do not see him as the best custodian of Ghanas economy.

State of the Art in Automated Machine Learning – InfoQ.com

Key Takeaways

In recent years, machine learning has been very successful in solving a wide range of problems.

In particular, neural networks have reached human, and sometimes super-human, levels of ability in tasks such as language translation, object recognition, game playing, and even driving cars.

With this growth in capability has come a growth in complexity. Data scientists and machine learning engineers must perform feature engineering, design model architectures, and optimize hyperparameters.

Since the purpose of the machine learning is to automate a task normally done by humans, naturally the next step is to automate the tasks of data scientists and engineers.

This area of research is called automated machine learning, or AutoML.

There have been many exciting developments in AutoML recently, and it's important to take a look at the current state of the art and learn about what's happening now and what's coming up in the future.

InfoQ reached out to the following subject matter experts in the industry to discuss the current state and future trends in AutoML space.

InfoQ:What is AutoML and why is it important?

Francesca Lazzeri:AutoML is the process of automating the time consuming, iterative tasks of machine learning model development, including model selection and hyperparameter tuning. When automated systems are used, the high costs of running a single experiment (e.g. training a deep neural network) and the high sample complexity (i.e. large number of experiments required) can be decreased. Auto ML is important because data scientists, analysts, and developers across industries can leverage it to:

Matthew Tovbin:Similarly to how we use software to automate repetitive or complex processes, automated machine learning is a set of techniques we apply to efficiently build predictive models without manual effort. Such techniques include methods for data processing, feature engineering, model evaluation, and model serving. With AutoML, we can focus on higher-level objectives such as answering questions and delivering business values faster while avoiding mundane tasks, e.g., data wrangling, by standardizing the methods we apply.

Adrian de Wynter:AutoML is the idea that the machine learning process, from data selection to modeling, can be automated by a series of algorithms and heuristics. In its most extreme version, AutoML is a fully automated system: you give it data, and it returns a model (or models) that generalizes to unseen data. The common hurdles that modelers face, such as tuning hyperparameters, feature selection--even architecture selection--are handled by a series of algorithms and heuristics.

I think its importance stems from the fact that a computer does precisely what you want it to do, and it is fantastic at repetition. The large majority of the hurdles I mentioned above are precisely that: repetition. Finding a hyperparameter set that works for a problem is arduous. Finding a hyperparameter set and an architecture that works for a problem is even harder. Add to the mix data preprocessing, the time spent on debugging code, and trying to get the right environment to work, and you start wondering whether computers are actually helping you solve said problem, or just getting in the way. Then, you have a new problem, and you have to start all over again.

The key insight of AutoML is that you might be able to get away by using some things you tried out before (i.e., your prior knowledge) to speed up your modeling process. It turns out that said process is effectively an algorithm, and thus it can be written into a computer program for automation.

Leah McGuire:AutoML is machine learning experts automating themselves. Creating quality models is a complex, time-consuming process. It requires understanding the dataset and question to be answered. This understanding is then used to collect and join the needed data, select features to use, clean the data and features, transform the features into values that can be used by a model, select an appropriate model type for the question, and tune feature-engineering and model parameters. AutoML uses algorithms based on machine learning best practices to build high-quality models without time-intensive work from an expert.

AutoML is important because it makes it possible to create high quality models with less time and expertise. Companies, non-profits, and government agencies all collect vast amounts of data; in order for this data to be utilized, it needs to be synthesized to answer pertinent questions. Machine learning is an effective way of synthesizing data to answer relevant questions, particularly if you do not have the resources to employ analysts to spend huge amounts of time looking at the data. However, machine learning requires both expertise and time to implement. AutoML seeks to decrease these barriers. This means that more data can be analyzed and used to make decisions.

Marios Michailidis:Broadly speaking, I would call it the process of automatically deriving or extracting useful information from data via harnessing the power of machines. Digital data is being produced at an incredible pace. Now that companies have found ways to harness it to extract value, it has become imperative to invest in data science and machine learning. However, the supply of data science (in human resource) is not enough to meet the current needs, hence making existing data scientists more productive is of the essence. This is where the notion of automated machine learning can provide the most value, via equipping the existing data scientists with tools and processes that can make their work easier, quicker, and generally more efficient.

InfoQ:What parts of the ML process can be automated and what are some parts unlikely to be automated?

Lazzeri:With Automated ML, the following tasks can be automated:

However, there are a few important tasks that cannot be automated during the model development cycle, such us developing industry-specific knowledge and data acumen, which are hard to automate and it is impossible to not keep humans in the loop. Another important aspect to consider is about operationalizing machine learning models: AutoML is very useful for the machine learning model development cycle; however, for the automation of the deployment step, there are other tools that need to be used, such as MLOps, which enables data science and IT teams to collaborate and increase the pace of model development and deployment via monitoring, validation, and governance of machine learning models.

Tovbin:Through the years of development of the machine learning domain, we have seen that a large number of tasks around data manipulation, feature engineering, feature selection, model evaluation, hyperparameter tuning can be defined as an optimization problem and, with enough computing power, efficiently automated. We can see numerous proofs for that not only in research but also in the software industry as platform offerings or open-source libraries. All these tools use predefined methods for data processing, model training, and evaluation.

The creative approach to framing problems and applying new techniques to existing problems is the one that is not likely to be replicated by machine automation, due to a large number of possible permutations, complex context, and expertise the machine lacks. As an example, look at the design of neural net architectures and their applications, a problem where the search space is so ample, where the progress is still mostly human-driven.

de Wynter:In theory, the entire ML process is computationally hard. From fitting data to, say, a neural network, to hyperparameter selection, to neural architecture search (NAS), these are all hard problems in the general case. However, all of these components have been automated with varying degrees of success for specific problems thanks to a combination of algorithmic advances, computational power, and patience.

I would like to think that the data preprocessing step and feature selection processes are the hardest to automate, given that a machine learning model will only learn what it has seen, and its performance (and hence the solution provided by the system) is dependent on its input. That said, there is a growing body of research on that aspect, too, and I hope that it will not remain hard for many natural problems.

McGuire:I would break the process of creating a machine learning model into four main components: data ETL and cleaning, feature engineering, model selection and tuning, and model explanation and evaluation.

Data cleaning can be relatively straight forward or incredibly challenging, depending on your data set. One of the most important factors is history; if you have information about your data at every point in time, data cleaning can be automated quite well. If you have only a static representation of current state, cleaning becomes much more challenging. Older data systems designed before relatively cheap storage tend to keep only the current state of information. This means that many important datasets do not have a history of actions taken on the data. Cleaning this type of history-less data has been a challenge for AutoML to provide good quality models for our customers.

Feature engineering is - again - a combination of easy and extremely difficult to automate steps. Some types of feature engineering are easy to automate given sufficient metadata about particular features. For example, parsing a phone number to validate and extract the location from the area code is straightforward as long as you know that a particular string is a phone number. However, feature engineering that requires intimate, domain-specific knowledge of how a business works are unlikely to be automated. For example, if profits from a sale need to account for local taxes before being analyzed for cost-to-serve, some human input is likely required to establish this relationship (unless you have a massive amount of data to learn from). One reason deep learning has overtaken feature engineering in fields like vision and speech is the massive amounts of high quality training data. Tabular data is often quite source specific making it difficult to generalize and feature engineering remains a challenge. In addition, defining the correct way to combine sources of data is often incredibly complex and labor intensive. Once you have the relationship defined, the combination can be automated, but establishing this relationship takes a fair amount of manual work and is unlikely to be automated any time soon.

Model selection and tuning is the easiest component to automate and many libraries already do this; there are even AutoML algorithms to find entirely new deep learning architectures. However, model selection and tuning libraries assume that the data you are using for modeling is clean and that you have a good way of evaluating the efficacy of your model. Massive data sets also help. Establishing clean datasets and evaluation frameworks still remain the biggest challenges.

Model explanations have been an important area of research for machine learning in general. While it is not strictly speaking part of AutoML, the growth of AutoML makes it even more important. It is also the case that the way in which you implement automation has implications for explainability. Specifically tracking metadata about what was tried and selected determines how deep explanations can go. Building explanations into AutoML requires a conscious effort and is very important. At some point the automation has to stop and someone will look at and use the result. The more information the model provides about how it works the more useful it is to the end consumer.

Michailidis:I would divide the areas where automation can be applied to the following main areas:

Regarding problems which are hard to automate, the first thing that pops into my mind is anything related to translating the business problem into a machine learning problem. For AutoML to succeed, it would require mapping the business problem into a type of solvable machine learning problem. It will also need to be supported by the right data quality/relevancy. The testing of the model and the success criteria need to be defined carefully by the data scientist.

Another area that will be hard for AutoML to succeed is whenethical dilemmasmay arise from the use of machine learning. For example, if there is an accident involved due to an algorithmic error, who will be responsible? I feel this kind of situation can be a challenge for AutoML.

InfoQ: What type of problems or use cases are better candidates to use AutoML?

Lazzeri:Classification, regression, and time series forecasting are the best candidates for AutoML. Azure Machine Learning offers featurizations specifically for these tasks, such as deep neural network text featurizers for classification.

Common classification examples include fraud detection, handwriting recognition, and object detection. Different from classification where predicted output values are categorical, regression models predict numerical output values based on independent predictors. For example automobile price based on features like, gas mileage, safety rating, etc.

Finally, building forecasts is an integral part of any business, whether its revenue, inventory, sales, or customer demand. Data Scientists can use automated ML to combine techniques and approaches and get a recommended, high-quality time series forecast.

Tovbin:Classification or regression problems relying on structured or semi-structured data, where one can define an evaluation metric, can usually be automated. For example, predicting user churn, real estate price prediction, autocomplete.

de Wynter:It depends. Let us assume that you want the standard goal of machine learning: you need to learn an unseen probability distribution from samples. You also know that there is some AutoML system that does an excellent job for various, somewhat related tasks. Theres absolutely no reason why you shouldnt automate it, especially if you dont have the time to be trying out possible solutions by yourself.

I do need to point out, however, that in theory a model that performs well for a specific problem does not have any guarantees around other problemsin fact, it is well-known that there exists at least one task where it will fail. Still, this statement is quite general and can be worked around in practice.

On the other hand, from an efficiency point of view, a problem that has been studied for years by many researchers might not be a great candidate, unless you are particularly interested in marginal improvements. This follows immediately from the fact that most AutoML results, and more concretely, NAS results, for well-known problems usually are equivalent within a small delta to the human-designed solutions. However, making the problem "interesting" (e.g., by including newer constraints such as parameter size) makes it effectively a new problem, and again perfect for AutoML.

McGuire:If you have a clean dataset that has a very well defined evaluation method it is a good candidate for AutoML. Early advances in AutoML have focused on areas such as hyper parameter tuning. This is a well defined but time consuming problem. These AutoML solutions are essentially taking advantage of increases in computational power combined with models of the problem space to arrive at solutions that are often better than an expert could achieve with less human time input. The key here is the clean dataset with a direct and easily measurable effect on the well defined evaluation set. AutoML will maximize your evaluation criteria very well. However, if there is any mismatch between that criteria and what you are trying to do or any confounding factors in the data AutoML will not see that in the way a human expert (hopefully) would.

Michailidis:Well-defined problemsare good use cases for AutoML. In these problems, the preparatory work has already been done. There are clear inputs and outputs and well-defined success criteria. Under these constraints, AutoML can produce the best results.

InfoQ: What are some important research problems in AutoML?

Lazzeri:An interesting research open question in AutoML is the problem of feature selection in supervised learning tasks. This is also called the differentiable feature selection problem, a gradient-based search algorithm for feature selection. Feature selection remains a crucial step in machine learning pipelines and continues to see active research: a few researchers from Microsoft Research are developing a feature selection method that is statistically efficient and computationally efficient.

Tovbin:The two significant ones that come to my mind are the transparency and bias of trained models.

Both experts and users often disagree or do not understand why ML systems, especially automated ones, make specific predictions. It is crucial to provide deeper insights into model predictions to allow users to gain confidence in such predictive systems. For example, when providing recommendations of products to consumers, a system can additionally highlight the contributing factors that influenced particular recommendations. In order to provide such functionality, in addition to the trained model, one would need to maintain additional metadata and expose it together with provided recommendations, which often cannot be easily achieved due to the size of the data or privacy concerns.

The same concerns apply to model bias, but the problem has different roots, e.g., incorrect data collection resulting in skewed datasets. This problem is more challenging to address because we often need to modify business processes and costly software. With applied automation, one can detect invalid datasets and sometimes even data collection practices early and allow removing bias from model predictions.

de Wynter:I think first and foremost, provably efficient and correct algorithms for hyperparameter optimization (HPO) and NAS. The issue with AutoML is that you are solving the problem of, well, problem solving (or rather, approximation), which is notoriously hard in the computational sense. We as researchers often focus on testing a few open benchmarks and call it a day, but, more often than not, such algorithms fail to generalize, and, as it was pointed out last year, they tend to not outperform a simple random search.

There is also the issue that from a computational point of view, a fully automated AutoML system will face problems that are not necessarily similar to the ones that it has seen before; or worse, they might have a similar input but completely different solutions. Normally, this is related to the field of "learning to learn", which often involves some type of reinforcement learning (or neural network) to learn how previous ML systems solved a problem, and approximately solve a new one.

McGuire:I think there is a lot of interesting work to do on automating feature engineering and data cleaning. This is where most of the time is spent in machine learning and domain expertise can be hugely important. Add to that the fact that most real world data is extremely messy and complex and you see that the biggest gains from automation are from automating as much data processing and transformation as possible.

Automating the data preparation work that currently takes a huge amount of human expertise and time is not a simple task. Techniques that have removed the need for custom feature engineering in fields like vision and language do not currently generalize to small messy datasets. You can use deep learning to identify pictures of cats because a cat is a cat and all you need to do is get enough labeled data to let a complex model fill in the features for you. A table tracking customer information for a bank is very different from a table tracking customer information for a clothing store. Using these datasets to build models for your business is a small data problem. Such problems cannot be solved simply by throwing enough data at a model that can capture the complexities on its own. Hand cleaning and feature engineering can use many different approaches and determining the best is currently something of an art form. Turning these steps into algorithms that can be applied across a wide range of data is a challenging but important area of research.

Being able to automatically create and more importantly explain models of such real world data is invaluable. Storage is cheap but experts are not. There is a huge amount of data being collected in the world today. Automating the cleaning and featurization of such data provides the opportunity to use it to answer important real world questions.

Michailidis:I personally find the area of (automation-aided)explainable AIand machine learning interpretability very interesting and very important for bridging the gap between Blackbox modelling and a model that stakeholders can comfortably trust.

Another area I am interested in is "model compression". I think it can be a huge game changer if we can automatically go from a powerful, complicated solution down to a much simpler one that canbasically produce the same/similar performance, but much faster, utilizing less resources.

InfoQ What are some AutoML techniques and open-source tool practitioners can use now?

Lazzeri:AutoML democratizes the machine learning model development process, and empowers its users, no matter their data science expertise, to identify an end-to-end machine learning pipeline for any problem. There are several AutoML techniques that practitioners can use now, my favorite ones are:

Tovbin:In recent years we have seen an explosion of tooling for machine learning practitioners starting from cloud platforms (Google Cloud AutoML, Salesforce Einstein, AWS SageMaker Autopilot, H2O AutoML) to open-source software (TPOT, AutoSklearn, TransmogrifAI). Here one can find more information on these and other solutions:

de Wynter:Disclaimer: I work for Amazon. This is an active area of research, and theres quite a few well-known algorithms (with more appearing every day) focusing on different parts of the pipeline, and with well-known successes on various problems. Its hard to name them all, but some of the best-known examples are grid search, Bayesian, and gradient-based methods for HPO; and search strategies (e.g., hill climbing), population/RL-based methods (e.g., ENAS, DARTS for one-shot NAS, and the algorithm used for AmoebaNet) for NAS. On the other hand, full end-to-end systems have achieved good results for a variety of problems.

McGuire:Well of course I need to mention our own open source AutoML library TransmogrifAI. We focus mainly on automating data cleaning and feature engineering with some model selection and are built on top of Spark.

There are also a large number of interesting AutoML libraries coming out in python including Hyperopt, scikit-optimize, and TPOT.

Michailidis:In the open source space, H2O.ai for has a tool called AutoML, that incorporates many of the elements I mentioned in the previous questions. It is also very scalable and can be used in any OS.Other tools are the autosklearnor autoweka.

InfoQ: What are the limitations of AutoML?

Lazzeri:Auto ML is raising a few challenges such as model parallelization, result collection, resource optimization, and iteration. Searching for the best model and hyperparameters is an iterative process constrained by many limitations, such as compute, money and time. Machine learning pipelines provide a solution to answer those AutoML challenges with a clear definition of the process and automation features. Azure Machine Learning pipeline is an independently executable workflow of a complete machine learning task. Pipelines should focus on machine learning tasks such as:

Tovbin:One problem that AutoML does not handle well is complex data types. The majority of automated methods expect certain data types, e.g., numerical, categorical, text, geo coordinates, and, therefore, specific distributions. Such methods are a poor fit to handle more complicated scenarios, such as behavioral data, e.g., online store visit sessions.

Another problem is feature engineering that needs to consider domain-specific properties of the data. For example, if we would like to build a system to automate email classification for an insurance sales team. The input from the sales team members that define which parts of the email are and are not necessary would usually be more valuable than a metric. When building such systems, it is essential to reinforce the system with domain expert feedback to achieve more reliable results.

de Wynter:There is the practical limitation of the sheer amount of computational resources you have to throw at a problem to get it solved. It is not a true obstacle insofar as you can always use more machines, but--environmentally speakingthere are consequences associated with such a brute-force approach. Now, not all of AutoML is brute-force (as I mentioned earlier, this is a computationally hard problem, so brute-forcing a problem will only get you so far), and relies heavily on heuristics, but you still need sizable compute to solve a given AutoML problem, since you have to try out multiple solutions end-to-end. Theres a push in the science community to obtain better, "greener" algorithms, and I think its fantastic and the way to go.

From a theoretical point of view, the hardness of AutoML is quite interestingultimately, it is a statement on how intrinsically difficult the problem is, regardless of what type or number of computers you use. Add to that what I mentioned earlier that there is no such thing as "one model to rule them all," (theoretically) and AutoML becomes a very complex computational problem.

Lastly, current AutoML systems have a well-defined model search space (e.g., neural network layers, or a mix of classifiers), which is expected to work for every input problem. This is not the case. However, the search spaces that provably generalize well for all possible problems are somewhat hard to implement in practice, so there is still an open question on how to bridge such a gap.

McGuire:I dont think AutoML is ready to replace having a human in the loop. AutoML can build a model, but as we automate more and more of modeling, developing tools to provide transparency into what the model is doing becomes more and more important. Models are only as good as the data used to build them. As we move away from having a human spending time to clean and deeply understand relationships in the data we need to provide new tools to allow users of the model to understand what the models are doing. You need a human to take a critical look at the models and the elements of the data they use and ask: is this the right thing to predict, and is this data OK to use? Without tools to answer these questions for AutoML models we run the risk unintentionally shooting ourselves in the foot. We need the ability to ensure we are not using inappropriate models or perpetuating and reinforcing issues and biases in society without realizing it.

Michailidis:This was covered mostly in previous sections. Another thing I would like to mention is that performance is greatly affected by theresources allocated. More powerful machines will be to cover a search space of potential algorithms, features and techniques much faster.

These tools (unless they are built to support very specific applications)do not have domain knowledgebut are made to solve generic problems. For example, they would not know out of the box that if a field in the data is called "distance travelled" and another one is called "duration in time" , they can be used to compute "speed" which may be an important feature for a given task. They may have a chance to generate that feature via stochastically trying different transformations in the data but a domain expert would figure this out much quicker, hence these tools will produce better results under the hands of an experienced data practitioner. Hence, these tools will be more successful if they have the option to incorporate domain knowledge coming from the expert.

The panelists agreed that AutoML is important because it saves time and resources, removing much of the manual work and allowing data scientist to deliver business value faster and more efficiently. The panelists predict, however, that AutoML will not likely remove the need for a "human in the loop," particularly for industry-specific knowledge and the ability to translate business problems into machine-learning problems. Important research areas in AutoML include feature engineering and model explanation.

The panelists highlighted several existing commercial and open-source AutoML tools and described the different parts of the machine-learning process that can be automated. Several panelists noted that one limitation of AutoML is the amount of computational resources required, while others pointed out the need for domain knowledge and model transparency.

The Best In – The Bahamas – Chessbase News

Chess on the Bahamas

Situated below Miami and above Cuba, the Bahamas are an archipelagic state that consists of of a bit less than700 islands, of which only about 30 are inhabited. The Bahamas are the 178th largest country in the world by population and reach place 155 by size. The national sport is cricket but chess is become more and more popular.

We had the chance to interview WCM Polina Karelina, the best female player of the Bahamas. Polina was also kind enough to annotate some of her games.

Polina Karelina vs. Valentine Cox

Arne Kaehler: Dear Polina, you are the best female player of the Bahamas. Tell us a bit about yourself, and when and how you started to play chess.

Polina Karelina: I learned the rules of the game when I was four years old. About a year after that, I started to participate in Bahamian tournaments. When I was six I won the U10 championship, and at the age of eight I became the overall U18 scholastic champion. In the following years, I showed a lot of potential, becoming the youngest Bahamas junior champion, and I started to win games against the adult players, including the national champion at that time.

When I was 11, I encountered some health problems. My mother and I moved to Ukraine for my medical treatment. I continued to play chess, winning the U12 girls Kyiv championship that same year. However, a couple of months later, I decided to quit chess due to chronic spinal pain.

It was only at the end of 2015, when I was 14, that I finally decided to study chess again. It was very difficult. My results were extremely inconsistent. I played in my first tournament since my return to chess in January 2016. To my surprise, I managed to draw against a 2000 rated player in that tournament, but there were a lot of ups and downs throughout the year.

AK: Where in the Bahamas did you grow up and how did you feel growing up in this country?

PK:When I was little, I grew up on Paradise Island, a small island that is connected to New Providence, which is where the national capital city of Nassau is located. Most tournaments are held in Nassau, with an exception of a few that are played in the Old Fort Bay Club and the Atlantis hotel on Paradise Island. The Bahamas is made up of about 700 islands and cays, most of which are referred to as the "family islands". Although it is common to travel to other islands by boat, it's often easier to travel by airplane because a lot of them are quite far away. The distance makes it difficult to organize tournaments with chess players from all the islands but sometimes players come to visit Nassau to play in tournaments. I know that the Bahamas Chess Federation has been making a great effort in promoting chess by training chess teachers on the family islands, and is hoping to soon host bigger tournaments with players from all over the Bahamas.

AK: Since when are you a titled player and how did you achieve your title?

PK: In May 2016, I participated in the female section of the 2.3.5 sub-zonal. My results were extremely inconsistent in that tournament, I had a very difficult start. However, I managed to come back mid-tournament, and going into the final round against a WCM, I only needed a draw to get the WCM title myself. I managed to score a win and only 5 months after starting to play again, I had achieved the WCM title.

Throughout the year, however, I still struggled a lot, and I felt like I was not playing at the level I should be at. I decided to continue trying, and by the end of the year, and early 2017, I finally started scoring some wins against the strongest Bahamian players. The following game is from the 2017 National championship. My opponent, NM Frank Gibson, is a seven-time national champion and has been the highest-rated Bahamian player for many years. He does not play very often now, but I am happy to have scored some nice wins against him, including the following game.

With anything I do, I always believe that I should set high goals for myself and push myself to take on challenges. In 2017, I received an invitation to a tournament in Barbados, which had two two sections and I decided to register for the section that primarily consisted of 2100+ players. I was by far the lowest-rated player in that section and to my surprise, I managed to get 1.5 points, including a win against an IM. I also had a number of close games against other players.

This experience helped me a lot, and in 2018 I started winning Bahamian tournaments consistently, qualifying to the 2018 Bahamas Olympiad absolute team. The Olympiad was a great experience. I played all 11 rounds on board one, which was very challenging, but I learned a lot, and the team did well, with one of our top players, CM Byron Small, gaining another CM title for the country.

The following game is from round 1 of the 2019 Bahamas national championship. My opponent, NM Valentine Cox, is one of the strongest players in the country. I often find it difficult to play against him, so this game was very important to me. After this, I went on to win the next six rounds and shared the lead together with the current national champion, CM Kendrick Knowles. I ended up losing my last two games and finished second but because Knowles had already qualified for the Olympic team in the 2018 National Championship, the qualification spot went to me. I am really looking forward to once again being part of the absolute team that will be representing the Bahamas in the next Olympiad in Moscow!

AK: Does your country support you and other chess players?

PK: Our federation is very small, and chess is only starting to grow as a sport in the Bahamas. We have a lot of talented players, but with a lack of opportunities to play internationally, it is a bit more challenging for us to improve than it is for players in other countries were the chess scene is more developed. That said, our local tournaments have gained some sponsors, and this has tremendously helped to promote chess in the country. Thanks to the hard work of BCF president CM Elton Joseph and FM Cecil Moncur more talented juniors than ever before play tournaments, and it is very exciting to see how chess will continue to grow in the country.

The team from the Bahamas at the Chess Olympiad 2018

AK: What are you doing when you do not play chess?

PK: I am studying computer science online, and starting this autumn I will also be studying business in Austria. I am looking forward to participating in more tournaments while I am studying in Europe.

AK: Your name doesn't sound typically Bahamian.

PK: I have family in Ukraine and Russia. My stepfather was Bahamian, so I have some relatives here as well.

AK: Last year in September 2019, Hurricane Dorian struck parts of the Bahamas. Are the Bahamas a dangerous place to live in or is it more the paradise you imagine it to be?

PK: Of course, especially with global warming, hurricanes are a threat to the Caribbean, and we all need to do our part to preserve our environment. However, the Bahamas remains to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

A swimming pig in Pig Beach - Major Cay

AK: You mentioned health problems you had when you were 11? Do you feel better now?

PK: Yes. I am doing fine now. I had surgery in 2015, and after that I started playing chess again.

AK: You even played against Magnus Carlsen once. How did that happen?

PK: When I started to play chess again, I used the PlayMagnus app, and every year, they invite about 10-12 players to take part in a simul against Magnus. I was really surprised when I found out that I was invited in 2016. The simul was played in New York. Of course, I knew the result would be clear, but I still wanted to play a good game, although I was quite nervous and ended up making a ton of mistakes right in the opening. It was a really cool experience though.

Could The Bahamas Petroleum Company plc (LON:BPC) Ownership Structure Tell Us Something Useful? – Yahoo Finance

The big shareholder groups in Bahamas Petroleum Company plc (LON:BPC) have power over the company. Large companies usually have institutions as shareholders, and we usually see insiders owning shares in smaller companies. Companies that used to be publicly owned tend to have lower insider ownership.

Bahamas Petroleum is not a large company by global standards. It has a market capitalization of UK91m, which means it wouldn't have the attention of many institutional investors. In the chart below, we can see that institutions are noticeable on the share registry. We can zoom in on the different ownership groups, to learn more about Bahamas Petroleum.

Check out our latest analysis for Bahamas Petroleum

Institutional investors commonly compare their own returns to the returns of a commonly followed index. So they generally do consider buying larger companies that are included in the relevant benchmark index.

Bahamas Petroleum already has institutions on the share registry. Indeed, they own a respectable stake in the company. This can indicate that the company has a certain degree of credibility in the investment community. However, it is best to be wary of relying on the supposed validation that comes with institutional investors. They too, get it wrong sometimes. If multiple institutions change their view on a stock at the same time, you could see the share price drop fast. It's therefore worth looking at Bahamas Petroleum's earnings history, below. Of course, the future is what really matters.

earnings-and-revenue-growth

Hedge funds don't have many shares in Bahamas Petroleum. Standard Life Aberdeen plc is currently the company's largest shareholder with 7.2% of shares outstanding. Barclays Bank PLC, Wealth and Investment Management Division is the second largest shareholder owning 5.3% of common stock, and IG Group Holdings Plc, Asset Management Arm holds about 4.2% of the company stock.

A deeper look at our ownership data shows that the top 12 shareholders collectively hold less than half of the register, suggesting a large group of small holders where no one share holder has a majority.

While it makes sense to study institutional ownership data for a company, it also makes sense to study analyst sentiments to know which way the wind is blowing. There is a little analyst coverage of the stock, but not much. So there is room for it to gain more coverage.

Story continues

While the precise definition of an insider can be subjective, almost everyone considers board members to be insiders. Company management run the business, but the CEO will answer to the board, even if he or she is a member of it.

I generally consider insider ownership to be a good thing. However, on some occasions it makes it more difficult for other shareholders to hold the board accountable for decisions.

Our most recent data indicates that insiders own some shares in Bahamas Petroleum Company plc. It has a market capitalization of just UK91m, and insiders have UK2.6m worth of shares, in their own names. This shows at least some alignment, but I usually like to see larger insider holdings. You can click here to see if those insiders have been buying or selling.

The general public, mostly retail investors, hold a substantial 54% stake in BPC, suggesting it is a fairly popular stock. With this size of ownership, retail investors can collectively play a role in decisions that affect shareholder returns, such as dividend policies and the appointment of directors. They can also exercise the power to decline an acquisition or merger that may not improve profitability.

While it is well worth considering the different groups that own a company, there are other factors that are even more important. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Bahamas Petroleum (1 is significant) that you should be aware of.

What travel looks like in the Bahamas in 2020 – Lonely Planet Travel News

The Bahamas reported its first case of COVID-19 on March 15, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs closed the borders 10 days later. Four months later, there were just 119 confirmed cases across the islands, but cases jumped in mid-July and the travel restrictions that were lifted July 1 were rolled back. Heres the latest.

Editor's note: This story was last updated on August 5, 2020. We will update this piece regularly to stay on top of the latest travel advice.

The Bahamas have seen a dramatic spike in new cases since its reopening July 1, and the local lockdown situation - and international travel advice - has been changing quickly and often.

In a national address on 3 August, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis noted that there had been a surge in hospitalizations and demand for ICU beds and a new national lockdown would be initiated. While the Bahamas will remain open to international travel during the lockdown, its recommended that all travel is limited to essential purposes. All travelers arriving in the Bahamas will have to follow the lockdown protocols and all other travel policies contained in the latest Emergency Powers Order.

Travelers who do arrive there will be subject to a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

Cruise ships have not yet returned, but when they do, protocols could include the advance submission of health declarations, temperature screenings, and restrictions around disembarkation, according to the Bahamas tourism board.

While travel is currently discouraged, all incoming visitors and residents by air and by sea above age 10 must provide proof of a negative COVID-19 swab test, taken within the previous 10 days. An electronic health visa is also required, and travelers are asked to complete the form in advance by uploading their test results and providing any relevant contact information. Applications take up to 72 hours to process, and those approved will receive a green code to be presented at airport check-in and upon arrival.

Everyone arriving in the Bahamas is required to quarantine for 14-days when they arrive. Travelers will be allowed to quarantine at a hotel, private club, rented accommodations (like Airbnbs), or on a private boat. They will have to submit to monitoring and install the HubbCat APP on their phone for contact tracing.

After 14 days, anyone intending to stay longer in the country will have to complete another COVID-19 test, at their own expense, to exit quarantine. More details, including rules for private aviation and private yachts and pleasure craft, can be found on bahamas.com/travelupdates.

A national lockdown went into effect on Tuesday, 4 August at 10 pm and will remain in place for a minimum of two weeks. During this time, quarantine measures will be enforced, and all businesses in the countryincluding curbside and takeaway dining and retail are required to suspend operations. Residents will only be able to leave their homes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 7 am to 5 pm - and then only for the sole purposes of getting essential items like groceries, water, medication and gas. Find out more details at opm.gov.bs.

New Providence: As of July 20, public and private beaches and parks on New Providence, Paradise Island, Rose Island, Athol Island and the surrounding cays are closed until further notice, as are the restaurants at Nassaus Arawak Cay and Potters Cay. The two Sandals properties in the Bahamas were scheduled to welcome guests July 1 with some extreme new protocols, but the Nassau resorts opening date has been pushed back to November 1.

When the Bahamas entered phase two of its reopening on July 1, resuming operation of commercial airlines, hotels and vacation rentals, and transportation like taxis, jitneys, and buses, authorities were cautiously optimistic but noted that the situation would be closely monitored in the days ahead.

Unfortunately, things didnt go according to plan, with Prime Minister Minnis noting in his July 19address to the Bahamian people that the situation deteriorated at an exponential rate since the countrys borders reopened. Grand Bahama has seen a resurgence of COVID-19 cases after being Covid-19 free for a little over two months, he said, an increase that "coincided with the re-institution of international flights and passenger sea transport.

The situation including the travel advice appears to be changing rapidly in the Bahamas, so check with all relevant government agencies and resources before planning any travel.

More than 200 healthcare workers at PMH being monitored, 30 infected – EyeWitness News

NASSAU, BAHAMAS More than 200 healthcare workers at the Princess Margaret Hospital are actively being monitored following possible exposure to COVID-19, according to health officials.

Chief Medical Officer Dr Pearl McMillian revealed on Friday that some 30 healthcare workers had tested positive for COVID-19 during the countrys second wave.

This 30 has exceeded the number that we had in the first wave, McMillian said.

All public healthcare facilities, including the Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), Sandilands Rehabilitation Center (SRC), community clinics throughout New Providence and the Rand Memorial (Hospital) have been impacted.

Our healthcare system capacity is challenged to respond to the steep rise in cases and persons under investigation over a short period of time.

Our acute care units as well as our hospital beds are about to exceed capacity.

Of those 30 confirmed cases, eight are from PMH, one is from SRC, 15 are from Grand Bahama Health Services (GBHS), two are from the Department of Public Health in the Family Islands, and four from the Department of Public Health in New Providence.

As a result of possible exposure across several facilities, health officials revealed 203 workers at PMH were actively being monitored at work and were considered low risk, along with 32 workers at SRC and five at GBHS.

Data also showed 48 workers at PMH were being quarantined at home or at a government facility and are considered medium to high risk, along with 11 workers at SRC and 67 at GHBS.

Another 65 staff members at PMH are currently under review for possible exposure.

With health care facilities in New Providence and Grand Bahama reaching capacity, healthcare workers warned the government last week that they were at a tipping point as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in the country.

Bahamas Doctors Union President Dr Melisande Bassett said staff members at the Princess Margaret Hospitals Accident and Emergency Department have become compromised with the overwhelming number of patients.

Several nurses, doctors and staff from the department called in sick last Tuesday, according to union representatives.

Additionally, PMH lab technicians staged a walkout and some Grand Bahama nurses called in sick on Wednesday.

During an address yesterday, Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis said he met with leaders of the Nurses Union, Consultant Physicians Staff Association Union, the Bahamas Doctors Union and the Public Service Union to discuss concerns on COVID-19-related matters.

Moving forward, Minnis said there will be separate biweekly meetings between the prime minister, the Ministry of Health and the unions, including internal briefings to union representatives from the Emergency Operations Centre.

Officials have insisted that there is adequate PPEs for frontline workers to address any concerns and those supplies are ordered and topped up by individual units across the health sector once inventory reaches a pre-determined level.

On average, there are enough stock of certain items for 15 to 43 weeks.

Given the rate that persons are hospitalized, we are in a very good position at this time, based on our calculated burn rates, that we do have the supplies in this country to meet our needs at this time, said PMHs Chief Hospital Administrator Mary Walker at a press conference on Friday.

The Bahamas will promote competitiveness and environmental resiliency with the IDB support – MENAFN.COM

(MENAFN - Caribbean News Global)

WASHINGTON, USA - The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a US$200 million loan to promote competitiveness and environmental resiliency in The Bahamas by improving the business climate, supporting the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) continuity, modernizing the institutional and legal framework to protect the natural resources, and economic diversification by promoting scientific and institutional developments in the Blue Economy.

This program supports the mandate and vision of The Bahamas Economic Recovery Committee of providing for a resilient, dynamic, inclusive, and sustainable economy and promotes private sector-led growth under a stronger comprehensive environmental framework.

This is the first of two operations under the modality of Programmatic Policy-Based Loan (PBP), to be contractually independent and technically related.

The project improves and modernizes the business climate by strengthening the transparency and governance of capital markets and facilitating the process of obtaining business licenses for low-risk companies. It also supports the continuity of MSMEs and the strengthening of their technical capacities in the short and medium-term period.

At the same time, the program modernizes the legal framework established for environmental resiliency, with the creation of the Ministry of the Environment, new legislation for control of plastic pollution, environmental impact assessment, sustainable procurement practices and the promotion of scientific resources to develop the Blue Economy. It also supports the governance and financial management of Marine Protected Areas, which is part of the ambitious strategic goal of the Bahamas to protect 20 percent of its marine and coastal environment by 2020

The policy reforms of the program are a combination of initiatives that support both public and private sector entities, that strengthen the environment of doing business in a sustainable and resilient manner, while protecting the natural assets of the country. In addition, different actors of the Blue Economy sector will benefit from the initiatives to promote its development; and the citizens of the country in general that will enjoy the benefits of the marine protected areas (better natural barriers for environmental resilience and more sustainable fishing) including positive externalities from the measures to control plastic pollution.

The IDB loan of US$200 million has a repayment term of 20 years, a grace period of five and a half years and an interest rate based on LIBOR.

UK quarantine imposed for travellers from Belgium, Andorra and the Bahamas – Telegraph.co.uk

Locked down, hot and desperate for a dip? If you live in Indianapolis and fancy putting a pool in your back yard there's a three-week wait - but that's just for an appointment to order one for next year.

Across the US and Europe, manufacturers and distributors of swimming pools and hot tubs are scrambling to meet a wave of demand as consumers cocoon at home to escape the coronavirus pandemic.

Frustrated by the long lead times and worried about a second wave of infections, some US consumers have even resorted to fashioning home-made pools out of metal livestock tanks despite the health and safety concerns.

"I've been in this industry for 35 years and I've never seen anything like this," said Thomas Epple, chief executive of Only Alpha Pool Products in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Mr Epple said orders for its steel and composite pool walls surged 200 per cent in 60 days after a lacklustre March and April and he has now doubled output by taking on more workers, adding shifts and paying lots of overtime.

It's a similar story in Spain, a country known for its sizzling summer temperatures which imposed one of Europe's toughest lockdowns to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Spain's Fluidra, the world's largest swimming pool equipment maker, initially furloughed employees in anticipation of a slump in demand but it soon put them all back to work, and hired more people.

In May, Fluidra ran out of stock and production capacity for the year for its above-ground pools, despite the extra staff. Sales of those models, which cost about 1,300 euros ($1,531), jumped over 50 per centin early July from the same period of 2019.
