In return, we want to hear your favorite. Let us know which track youll be spinning for the rest of the weekend in the comments!

The second single off their upcoming album, Moon Taxis Light Up is the uplifting track everyone needs to hear right now. Featuring lyrics surrounding hope and a bright backing track to match, frontman Trevor Terndrup says the song was released at just the right time. We have always found solace through music and people coming together around music, be it in a large crowd or singing in the car, Terndrup says. So until we can dance and sing together again, Light Up and dont give up.

Carlie Hanson opens up about the darkest periods of her life in the deeply personal Good Enough. Inspired by the singers struggles with relationships, depression and anxiety, Good Enough is as relatable as it is memorable. Produced by Mitch Allan and Anthony Jones, the track features upbeat synths and beats despite its raw lyrics, reminding us that its all right to feel lost sometimes.

Kat Cunning delivers a new alt-pop anthem with their latest love song, Supernova (tigers blud). The track builds to a colorful climax before leaning into a gentle bridge and was inspired by Cunnings experience with falling for someone while knowing it wont work. I wrote [the song] to celebrate the power of lovehow it can make us feel three times our size and even overpromise things we have no control over, Cunning says. I hope it accompanies the lovers who would rather burn at the hands of something supernatural than watch through a telescope a million miles removed. Recently signing with Lava Records, theyre currently working on their debut EP, which is set to drop soon.

With striking rhythms and looping synths, sophie meiers explores the edge of the world while delivering haunting vocals and airy melodies. The anti-pop singer envisions the end of life as we know it with dark imagery and lyrics such as The violence makes me feels so calm and Death is certain. The track is included on their latest EP, you and me again.

French quartet Prish debut the first single off their forthcoming album with Fixed It All. Grunge-like guitars fill every beat while a heavy bassline drives lyrics addressing questionable decisions and losing friends. Vocalist/guitarist Mathias Court says the Will Yip-produced track sets the tone for the rest of the bands upcoming LP set to be released through SideOneDummy, which will be darker [and] heavier than their previous works.

Tedy takes us on an R&B journey of empowerment and addresses societys views on masculinity with Boys Dont Cry. Backed by moving synthesizers and beats, Tedys voice fluctuates between low verses and high choruses with ease, providing a smooth roller coaster of sound. Directed by Elliott Muscat and Tristan C-M, the tracks accompanying music video details the singers own life experiences and how he overcame his hardships. The song will be included on Tedys upcoming EP, Boys Dont Cry, out Sept. 11 via Sony Music Canada.

Touching on loss and mourning, pop-punk five-piece Three Cheers Too Late release an emotional new single with This Might Be It. Unwavering and fast-paced, the band waste no time getting to the heart of the track with resonating lyrics about how no one really knows what comes after death. Vocalist Anthony Santiago says he hopes the track can help others reflect on their own grief the way writing it helped with his own. I want to believe theres something after this life, he shares. Im honestly just waiting for a sign from my loved ones who have left this life before me to say that its all right and that there is something more.

Inspired by 90s vibes and psych-punk grinds, Model Childs (aka Danny Parker) Drain Me boasts echoing vocals and a beat that is downright groovy. Meant to capture the feeling of what its like to be crushing on someone, the song is catchy and intoxicating with smooth guitar transitions and slick drums. The track is the second single from Parkers upcoming debut album, Dropout, which drops Oct. 16.

Beginning with slow guitar riffs, Younger Hunger slowly rocket into outer space with each instrumental addition on the otherworldly Pray 4 U. The track is their third single since the release of their debut EP, YIKES, earlier this year. Grappling with toxic relationships, the trio meld ear-catching melodies and tight rhythms into a euphony of psych-pop harmonies.

Their first single since the release of 2015s Ghosts Again, foreveratlast tear it up and tackle their inner demons in Holy Ghost. Vocalist Brittany Ritchey says the track was written so others would be able to relate to it on a personal level. I wrote it off some personal things, but with alcoholism, addiction and even people that create holes in our lives in mind, she says. Its like, what is it that follows you? Whats hiding in your shadows? The band currently have an album ready for release but havent shared a definite date for its arrival.

Quantasy + Associates Announce True Voice, A Wellness Platform for Today’s Cultural Realities, With Lead Investment from Jill Scott – PRNewswire

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --Quantasy + Associates (Q+A) today announced the creation of True Voice, a wellness platform developed in partnership with lead investments from Jill Scott and her business partner, Live Nation Urban's Shawn Gee.

True Voice will offer mindfulness resources, educational content and community-building tools shaped by today's cultural realities. Financial terms were not disclosed.

True Voice is designed to address the full spectrum of cultures, lifestyles and interests that the current "wellness" market misses, starting with women of color. At launch, the True Voice platform will include a suite of wellness resources that will empower members to be their truest selves. The platform will offer mindfulness courses developed in conjunction with recognized leaders in health and wellness, live sessions with experts, tools to support community organization and advocacy, as well as daily recommendations tailored to each member's own physical and mental wellbeing. True Voice is under development now and will open for consumer access in Q4 of this year.

Challenging Stereotypes Around How "Wellness" Should Look and Feel

The Global Wellness Institute estimates that the global wellness economy is a $4.5 trillion+ marketencompassing everything from yoga and meditation, to acupuncture, holistic healers, doulas and more. And while women of color represent billions of dollars in spending power in America, wellness and self-care products are still largely created for and marketed to predominantly white consumers.

That opportunity is why Q+A, Scott, and Gee are backing True Voice. Scott, named by TIME Magazine as a "cultural icon of healing power and serenity," is a multimedia entrepreneur, Grammy-winning singer/songwriter, New York Times bestselling poet, and NAACP award-winning actress, and will be the lead investor of the platform. Los Angeles-based Quantasy will lead all aspects of platform development, as well as branding and marketing.

"Throughout my entire life and career, I've always remained true to my authentic voice, and finding that voice was a result of prioritizing my personal wellbeing and listening to my mind, body and soul starting at an early age," said Scott. "As a Black woman, it is important for me to have the love and support of others who look like me and share similar experiences. True Voice will be your wellness village, introducing various solo and community practices into your daily routine so you can discover your true self."

A Digital Resource for Wellness

Inner peace, mindfulness and empowerment are important for women of color, yet the current crop of digital resources and wellness apps fail to address their cultural needs. One of most compelling aspects of True Voice will be its national database of wellness professionals and practitioners of color. True Voice members will ultimately be able to locate and connect with holistic healers and therapists that can relate to them on a deeper level.

"The ability for people to build focus and access resources to enjoy a life rich in fulfillment is about bringing together personal well-being and societal change," said Will Campbell, Co-Founder and CEO, Quantasy + Associates. "This platform not only includes content and information that can do that, but is designed to facilitate important conversations that challenge social and cultural norms, destigmatizing issues that have historically held people back. We couldn't be more proud to partner with Jill and Shawn to bring the vision of this resource to life."

Quantasy has a proven track record of building successful technology and entertainment brands. They built Kevin Hart's Laugh Out Loud Network, Google's product inclusion platform, and ESSENCE Studios, which hosted their first-ever virtual ESSENCE Festival, and are leading the development of True Voice. Sign up for updates on True Voice at http://www.truevoiceapp.com, and follow @TrueVoiceApp on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok.

This Delhi NGO wants your old devices so that kids in remote areas can use it to learn online – EdexLive

Listen, you know as well as we do that the old phone that you left behind when you upgraded to a newer and cooler model is just going to gather dust in some obscure corner of your house. Also, what about that PC (Personal Computer) which is more of a relic? Or that camera lens which you were sure is going to make you a hot-shot photographer one day? These devices may have served their purpose in your life, but for someone else, they could be a lifeline. This is what New Delhi-basedDigital Empowerment Foundation (DEF)is advocating. It is asking for your old and redundant devices which can be used by children in rural households to learn online, which has become the norm du jour since the pandemic took over our world and life, as we knew it. They are aptly calling this initiativeDigital Daan.

Give one, give allIn the year 2002, Osama Manzar and Shaifali Chikermane started DEF with the aim to draw rural and marginalised communities out of the darkness and into the digital age. Their presence is spread across 500 locations in 126 districts of 23 states. And Digital Daan is one of the steps they took to get closer to their goal. Osama introduces us to this latest initiative and tells us that it's a three-year project during which they want to distribute one million devices. And when they say devices they mean smartphones, PCs, laptops, tablets, printers, projectors, camera and camera lens. "Many households have smartphones but sometimes it is with their father who is out or a brother who refuses to share. And then there are those households that don't have access at all. It's an unfair challenge, like having the Right to Information Act (RTI), but not being able to make use of it," explains. No wonder they have more requests from those people who need devices rather than those who are willing to donate them.

This initiative started recently, in lieu of the increasing importance of digital education, for which, one needs a device and internet. "But this is not just a giving, receiving or crowdsourcing initiative, this is strategic. There is a lack of meaningful devices that are needed," he says. And because only 12.5 per cent of students have access to smartphones (as per 2017-18 National Sample Survey), it is important that they are given access as soon as possible.

Before you donate the device, all DEF asks is that you delete all your personal files, ensure that the devices are in working condition and they also request you to provide chargers along with it. Because the cost of collection, management and distribution can comes up to a lot, they are asking people to courier the devices over to them. Okay, so the collection plan is clear, what's the distribution plan, we ask. "We have over 700 community resource centres of our own, we will first use our own network and distribution channel. We are also creating a list of credible NGOs who work in the realm of education and who could do with devices. There are also people applying for devices and writing in to us for them, they will also be given devices," shares Osama. The first phase of distribution will begin in November.

Word of mouth at workDEF has been getting a lot of attention on social media so they are happy with that. They even have a corporate on board who has agreed to provide 10,000 devices. But another challenge is collecting meaningful devices. "If you want to donate a smartphone which only works on 2G, then that's a bottleneck," explains Osama.

The elephant in the room, so to speak, in this situation is the internet. As providing devices is solving just one part of the equation because the internet still remains elusive in most rural areas. But Osama is not afraid to address this because they are hoping to advocate for it. "What we are advocating for is for internet service providers to offer student-friendly data packages that are cheaper and come at a discounted rate. Also, the network infrastructure itself needs to increase so that even remote areas can access the internet," he says. He also proposes that each state education department comes up with a scheme for digital devices, just like they are giving our free ration and offering scholarships. "And with the help of the Universal Service Obligation Fund (offers subsidies to make sure that telegraph services are accessible to all, especially those from rural areas) data packages can be worked out," he offers.

Raina never played for personal glory but India’s, says PM Modi – Daijiworld.com

New Delhi, Aug 21 (IANS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid rich tribute to Suresh Raina, who recently announced his retirement from international cricket, saying the former Indian batsman never played for personal glory but for the glory of the team and the country.

Like MS Dhoni, Raina too on the occasion of India's 74th Independence Day, hanged his boots from international cricket via a social media post.

"On 15th August, you decided to make what would surely have been one of the toughest decisions of your life. I do not want to use the word 'retirement' because you are way too young and energetic to 'retire'," Prime Minister Modi said in a letter addressed to Raina.

"You are padding up for the next innings of your life, after an extremely fruitful innings on the cricket field," he added in the letter he tweeted.

The 33-year-old expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister by tweeting back: "When we play, we give our blood & sweat for the nation. No better appreciation than being loved by the people of this country and even more by the country's PM. Thank you Narendra Modiji for your words of appreciation & best wishes. I accept them with gratitude. Jai Hind!"

Raina represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is in an international career spanning 13 years.

"You have lived and breathed cricket. Your interest in the sport began early in life, in the by-lanes of Muradnagar and subsequently found feet in the playgrounds of Lucknow," said Prime Minister Modi.

"There on, what an eventful journey it has been, culminating in the most important honour of representing India - a country you love deeply - in all three forms of the game.

"Generations will remember you not only as a fine batsman but also as a very useful bowler who the captain could turn to when the situation demanded. Your fielding was exemplary and inspiring.

"Some of the best catches in recent international cricket have your distinctive imprint. It would take days to count just the number of runs you have saved by your alertness on the field," he added.

Raina first made his international debut at the age of 18 and also led India in ODIs and T2OIs when he turned 23.

He is the youngest to lead an India men's T20I side and was also a member of the side that played in India's first-ever T20I. The southpaw is also the first Indian to score a century in the T20 World Cup.

"As a batsman, you especially distinguished yourself across all mediums and particularly in the newest form of the game, the T20 cricket. This is not an easy format. In tune with our times, it requires quick fixes in double quick time. Again, your promptness and speed were assets for this form," said the Prime Minister while praising Raina's performance in the shortest format of the game.

Raina was part of the World Cup winning team in 2011, when India defeated Sri Lanka in the summit clash at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. He had played a crucial role in India's successful campaign in the tournament and Prime Minister Modi recalled his valuable performance in the quarterfinals against Australia.

"India can never forget your inspiring role during the 2011 World Cup, especially during the later matches. I saw you live in action at the Motera Stadium, Ahmedabad, during the quarterfinal against Australia. Your anchoring innings had a big role to play in our team's victory," he said.

"I can confidently say that most fans will miss seeing your elegant cover drives, one which I was lucky to witness live that day.

The Prime Minister further praised the left-handed batsman for his fighting spirit which he believes is deeply motivating for the youngsters

"Sportspersons are admired not only for their conduct on the field but also off the field. Your fighting spirit can motivate many youngsters," stated Prime Minister Modi.

"During your cricketing career, you sometimes faced setbacks including injuries but every time you overcame these challenges, thanks to your tenacity. At the same time, Suresh Raina will always be synonymous with team spirit.

"You played not for personal glory but for the glory of your team and the glory of India. Your enthusiasm on the field was infectious, and we could all witness that you would be among the first and most animated players to celebrate the fall of the opposing team's wicket," he added.

Prime Minister Modi, towards the end in his letter, also praised Raina for his efforts towards women empowerment and Swachh Bharat and wished him luck for his second innings beyond cricket.

"Your care and compassion towards society is visible in your numerous community service efforts. You have passionately supported efforts towards women empowerment, Swachh Bharat and helping the needy," said the Prime Minister.

"I am glad you are attached to India's cultural roots and proud of deepening youth's connect with our glorious ethos as well as value systems. I am confident you will have an equally fruitful and successful innings in whatever you wish to pursue in the times to come.

"I do hope you will use this opportunity to spend even more quality time with Priyanka, Gracia and Rio.

"Thank you for doing whatever you can to make India a leader in sports and constantly inspiring young minds," he signed off.

Voices of Rural India: Taking Stories from Indias Hinterland to The World – Outlook India

Did you know that the people of villages across Uttarakhands Kumaon region celebrate a festival to thank crows? Or that theres a village in Himachal Pradeshs Tirthan Valley known as Bihar? And that it has a month-long festival dedicated to local delicacies? Rural India is a treasure trove of many such intriguing stories which havent received enough attention and appreciation. Well, thats set to change soon. In a first, Voices of Rural India, a not-for-profit digital initiative, aims to revolutionise storytelling by hosting curated stories told directly by rural storytellers. For instance, the tale of a young astronomer in Ladakhs Maan village who is breaking gender stereotypes, or that of a postman from Zanskar who is fascinated by petroglyphs.

The coronavirus pandemic has left a huge dent on Indias tourism industry. As a result, rural communities have lost their livelihoods, supply chains have been disrupted and alternate income streams have been severely impacted. Industry experts opine that the effect of COVID-19 on the tourism sector is here to stay for at least a year. This is where Voices of Rural Indiacomes in. The platform has been formed to turn this unprecedented crisis into an opportunity to generate alternate livelihoods by upgrading digital skills in rural India.

The initiative has been co-founded by travel blogger Shivya Nath, Malika Virdi (founder director of community-based tourism organisation Himalayan Ark) and Osama Manzar (founder of the Digital Empowerment Foundation). Despite a long tradition of oral storytelling, rural communities are largely excluded from the digital world, Nath says. With Voices of Rural India, we hope to create a digital storytelling revolution by supporting and empowering rural storytellers". The travel blogger feels that while urban dwellers can leverage digital tools to work and study online, rural India continues to be held back by the lack of digital skills and opportunities.

In the short-term, Voices of Rural India is creating a revenue stream for affected communities through digital journalism. In the long run, it aims to develop digital storytelling skills at the grassroots level, along with becoming a repository of local culture and knowledge, documented in local voices.

Voices of Rural India is currently working with rural communities in Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala, Maharashtra and Gujarat, through on-ground community-based tourism organisations like Global Himalayan Expedition, Himalayan Ecotourism and Grassroutes Journeys. They assist the team in identifying storytellers who are usually guides, homestay owners, tour operators and youth and women from the local community.

Voices of Rural India volunteers share storytelling modules with community organisations, which identify story ideas and storytellers. Rural storytellers submit stories in audio/visual or video or text format. The volunteers and community organisations then select, edit and curate the best story ideas rooted in human experiences. Volunteers finally remunerate and promote the storytellers. Every storyteller is currently being paid Rs 1,000 every time their story is accepted for publishing.

Rural India is a goldmine of stories that the world needs to know, believes Manzar. There are approximately 6,50,000 villages in India. Even if we have one story from each village, the World Wide Web could have three-quarter of a million stories online, which could not only enrich the country but the entire digital world, he opines.

Landscapes, and communities who inhabit them, are embedded in their own particular stories and cultures. And perhaps, thats part of what draws the tourist to rural destinations, says Virdi. She adds that the initiative is an opportunity for rural storytellers, guides and community folk to delve into their life experiences and own their folklore with pride and re-tell them to the world. With the possibility of physical travel now on hold, learning to own our narratives in this new virtual medium is both exciting and challenging. But what better way to stay connected despite the discontinuities, she adds.

The organisation is also providing virtual training to rural storytellers. They are focussed on teaching them basic storytelling, how to brainstorm ideas, how to add their personal perspectives into their stories and using smartphones for recording audio and video and taking pictures. Some of the storytellers are also learning typing in Hindi.

In the long run, Voices of Rural India aims to bring these storytellers on social media platforms and leverage online tools which will also help them in tourism and other side businesses. The organisation is also looking for volunteers with editing and social media expertise, who could assist them in developing easy to learn training material.

Against the Odds: Choosing Life, Health, and Service – Olney Daily Mail

This is Part Three of a 20-Part Series

For many who receive a medical death sentence, life comes to a screeching halt while the pace of time seemingly accelerates. For David Patient, HIV/AIDS meant that life was just beginning.

Patient was a rare phenomenon. As a sensitive, emotionally tormented, suicidal young man, the twenty-two year old realized that not only did he want to live, but the virus inside of him wanted to live too. Thus, in 1983, Patient and his disease (which was baffling medical researchers worldwide) became allies.

After his initial diagnosis as terminal, Patient moved from his home in Las Vegas to Florida. There, in 1986, he participated in the very first human trials of an antiretroviral (ARV) drug referred to as AZT (azidothymidine).

Patient quickly became ill from side effects. Consequently, he and one other person dropped out of the trials.

As of 2004, at the time of Patient co-authoring the book, The Healer Inside You, he and the other person who had dropped out of the AZT trials were the only two people of the initial trial still alive. Patient later learned that the deaths were not from the drug itself, but from the high dosages administered in the early trials.

Also in the late 80s, Patient abruptly ended the use of illicit drugs, which he had engaged in for years to numb chronic depression. This led to productive decisions such as learning to become a chef, attending support groups for people with HIV/AIDS, and getting certified as a hypnotherapist a skill which empowered Patient to help people with HIV/AIDS manage pain and suffering as they died.

Throwing himself into personal growth, educational endeavors, and social support, Patient transformed from a reckless young man into a caring and focused adult. He assisted in the establishment of the first AIDS agency in Florida, and in 1992 received a commendation from President Clinton for his work in AIDS.

During these years, Patient was also involved in studies of "long-term non-progressors," which required regular visits to research labs.

A "non-progressor" is someone with HIV whose immune system does not get weaker, even after decades of infection. However, Patient does not fit the technical definition of a "non-progressor," because his immune system initially weakened after diagnosis, but later improved - without medication.

(This was a phenomenon reported in only 3% to 7% of people with HIV in the 80s and 90s).

While Patient experienced rare improvements in his health before effective drug therapies were available, he was not an advocate against pharmaceuticals. He believed that individuals with illness should use anything they have at their disposal to improve conditions.

In the years before effective HIV/AIDS drug therapies were available, Patient supported himself and others through the skilled use of counseling and nutrition.

However, when effective drugs for HIV/AIDS became available, Patient put his neck on the line to ensure that underserved populations could also access them.

In 1992, Patient relocated to California, where he opened a counseling practice.

Meanwhile, back in South Africa, where Patient had grown up, the longstanding Apartheid government was nearing its demise.

In 1990, revered anti-Apartheid activist Nelson Mandela had been released from a 27-year prison sentence. This enlivened new hope for a democratic South Africa.

Since David Patient had been exiled from South Africa since the age of 18, these political changes filled him with excitement over the possibility of returning to his home country (see Part Two for more details).

Until then, Patient found ways to support his fellow South Africans with HIV/AIDS by shipping ARVs (antiretrovirals) overseas.

He was living in San Francisco at the time, where people with HIV/AIDS were given ARVs at no-cost to manage the disease. Patient began working for an agency which, after the death of San Francisco-based, free ARV recipients, gathered and shipped any of their unused medications to South Africa to be used by underserved persons-in-need.

Patient waited for the day that he could return to South Africa to teach indigenous populations how to use effective drug therapies, mind-body-science, and nutrition to support their mental, emotional, and physical health.

His journey in disease containment and prevention was only beginning, yet he had already outlived his initial medical death sentence by nearly a decade.

To be continued

Amid the current global crisis, Patients legacy is as relevant today as it was decades ago. His life work is an example which can enrich humanitys quality of life in all parts of the world. It is shared as a mirror to the magnitude of our own self-empowerment and community impact during the current crisis.

Whether it will be right for women to increase the age of marriage or not – Avenue Mail

By Dr. Satywan Saurabh

The Prime Minister, during his address to the nation on the 74th Independence Day, brought about a committee/legislation to reconsider the minimum age of marriage for women from Red Fort. These laws mandate the minimum age of child marriage to be made to prevent child marriage and abuse of minors. Different religions dealing with marriage have their own standards of personal laws.

The minimum age of marriage in India, especially for women, has always been a controversial subject, and whenever there is talk of changes in such rules, there has been strong resistance from social and religious conservatives. According to the current rules, the minimum age of marriage for men and women is 21 and 18 years respectively.

The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Jaya Jaitley to examine matters like maternal age, the imperative of reducing maternal mortality, and improvement in nutrition levels among women. It will examine the relation of the age of marriage and motherhood with pregnancy, birth and beyond, health, medical well-being, and nutritional status of the mother and newborn, baby or child.

The law will also look at key parameters like infant mortality (IMR), maternal mortality (MMR), the total fertility rate (TFR), the sex ratio at birth (SRB) and child sex ratio (CSR) and examine the possibility that Now whether it will be right to increase the age of marriage for women from the current 18 years to 21 years.

The link between age at marriage and nutritional age is a biologic fact, a study conducted by the International Food Policy Research Institute showed that for young adults compared to the age of children born to adolescent mothers (1019 years) Births (2024 years) were 5% more likely to be stewed (less for their age), 11 percent more than children of adult mothers (25 years or older). Children born to adolescent mothers have 10 percentage points more weight than those who are underweight as adult mothers.

It also highlighted other factors, such as low education among adolescent mothers and their poor economic status, with the strongest relationship with child height and weight measurement. Above all, it was recommended that increasing age at first marriage, age at first birth, and girls education is a promising approach to improving maternal and child nutrition.

There does not appear to be any legal reasoning for the minimum age of women and men to be equal for marriage, although many people argue against it, but see this type of argument different rules Article 14 of the Constitution (Right to Equality) And violate Article 21 (right to live life with dignity). Different ages of women and men for marriage promotes orthodoxy in society. The difference in age of marriage for women and men has no basis in the law because the women and men involved in marriage are equal in every way and therefore every partnership should be equal.

On the other hand, there have also been arguments against increasing the minimum age of marriage for women,The National Coalition for Adolescents claims that raising the legal age of marriage for girls only artificially expands, criminalizes, and criminalizes the number of underage married individuals without any legal protection. Girls have to be attracted to sex.

Among all this, there are many arguments in favor of increasing the minimum age of marriage of women. There is a need to bring gender-neutrality in the democratic era. There is a need to reduce the risks of early pregnancy in women. Early pregnancy is associated with increased child mortality and affects the mothers health. Despite laws to reduce the minimum age and to have sex with a minor, child marriages are very prevalent in India.

Early pregnancy is associated with increased child mortality and affects the mothers health. Thus, attention is needed to the mothers health and readiness to carry a child. The government needs to emphasize the economic and social empowerment of women and girls, along with targeted social and behavior change communication campaigns, as well as raising the minimum age of marriage for women will increase gender-neutrality.

According to the data, 35000 women died due to complications during pregnancy and delivery in the year 2017 in India. It is true that in India, at the time when women should pay attention to their future and education, they are burdened with the burden of marriage, today there is a need for change in this orthodox practice in 21st century, which is empowering women This will prove to be an important step in the direction of.

Increasing the minimum age of marriage for women will give more time for women to get educated, enter colleges, and get higher education. With this decision, the entire Indian society, especially the lower economic class, will get an opportunity to progress.

In The Hot Seat With Forbes Advisor India: Kunal Shah – Forbes

Shah thinks democratizing access to credit to the destinations where consumption happens will ... [+] automatically make the Indian ecosystem thrive on credit.

Kunal Shah is the founder of CRED, a members-only credit card payment app, and FreeCharge, a payments app now owned by one of Indias largest banks Axis Bank.

CRED, which started in 2018, is a web-based mobile application that allows members to manage all their credit cards in one place, remind them of their due dates and reward them with coins that can be redeemed on experiences, brands and other benefits, every time they pay their bills.

Admission to CRED is based on the credit score for individuals without any charges and a fee for brands and institutions. For transactions that attract a processing fee, the user is notified on the app well in advance.

A graduate in philosophy, Shah is a tech founder without an engineering background. He is deeply interested in understanding consumers better, and his fervor for behavioral economics has often led him to use microblogging site Twitter as a user feedback tool.

Shah has been an advisor to the board of Bennett Coleman & Co Limited, the Chairman of the Internet and Mobile Association of Indian and an advisor to Y Combinator and Sequoia Capital India.

He is an active angel investor and has mentored Asias startups such as Unacademy, RazorPay, Go-Jek, Innov8 and Zilingo among others.

In a conversation with Forbes Advisor India, Shah spoke about why he has focused all his energy into the credit lending market in India via his latest venture and his hopes of seeing Indian entrepreneurs create the countrys next million jobs.

In India, three aspects play a major role in determining the health of the countrys credit industry.

One is the role of income declaration and stable income, which results in credit to be seamlessly available. And it's not about identity; Aadhaar has taken away the issues relating to identity. But you still need income to get credit so that the banks have something to underwrite you against.

I think the important thing to understand is that for credit to exist in a formal manner, there needs to be either stability of income, or clarity of income in terms of a structured manner and the role filing income tax plays.

Second is that the female participation in labour is so low that our per capita income is continuously kind of constrained because of that. A very fundamental issue that people tend to forget about India is that India is a very strong patriarchal society that has not created financial independence for women. And therefore, usage of credit has been limited to what use cases that say, men come up with. This is a big factor that drives unique use of credit and credit cards and that has not been done so far in India.

The third thing is poor financial literacy. So, there is this general fear about money and credit cards and loans. We all grew up with the mindset of saving money, and all of us have just kept money in the bank accounts where that money earns a minimal 2-3% interest.

We do not understand the concept of compound interest, of how money flows and the concept of inflation. These concepts are very alien to most people because of our education system; we were never told about financial literacy and were never trained about money. We are good at math but terrible at money.

I think credit cards don't emerge when a country becomes developed, but the existence of credit cards makes a country developed. Because consumption is a big factor, which creates growth in per capita income consumption is the big factor through which incomes of people grow.

And I think the moment we democratize access to credit to the destinations where consumption happens, well automatically make the ecosystem thrive on credit. And it may emerge in the form of credit cards, it may emerge in the form of a credit line on the phone, it may emerge in the form of your bank extending a loan on your spends on your debit card; there are many many ways.

So I believe the future of credit in India may not necessarily be in the form of a card, but a simple product that allows you to buy something in the future by paying equated monthly installments or EMIs on a regular basis. And I think as a country, we cannot forget that the progress of our country in terms of per capita income or jobs is only going to come through consumption. And we are not going to create a much bigger opportunity without that.

I think the motivation was personal in many ways.

I got to start early in my life and was financially independent from the age of 16 when I was still in school due to a financial crisis around debt that my family went through. We saw all the things that can go wrong with debtdads business did not work, we lost our house to that. That has been one of the motivations at the back of my mind.

Another motivation has been to create an ecosystem where the good actors win.

I think we really need to take care of the top 2% of Indians who are paying taxes, because what if they leave India? Who's going to be building this country?

I always wondered that if we do not reward the good actors, will more people be interested in becoming good actors. I think to me that remains a core motivation to build CRED, and I think if nobody is really batting for the good actors, I should.

If you make the good actors win, more people want to be good actors. We are not in the business of punishing anybody, but if we can make their lives better, more people will want to care about it. If more people want to be good actors, the country will prosper.

I guess the spirit to see Indian entrepreneurship do well.

I had the opportunity to become an investor and I chose to start up again. I have invested in up to 60-70 startups, have mentored several hundred founders and I believe that the pandemic that we need in this country is of entrepreneurship.

If we have more job creators, then naturally we'll get rid of the addiction of seeking jobs and we will have prosperity coming in. I believe we are all patriotic at heart. Like I had the opportunity to move abroad but for some reason we are all irrationally attached to this country and we would love to see it do well. What drives me is that hunger to see that happen. And more and more and more opportunities coming in and helping people through that.

If we nurture entrepreneurs who have a wealth-creating mindset, maybe 500 people in our teams will become entrepreneurs and create the next big thing. I think thats what empowerment to me will be.

PM Modi writes appreciation note for Suresh Raina as he retires from International Cricket – The Indian Wire

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote a two-page appreciation note to former international cricketer Suresh Raina. Raina announced his retirement on August 15, after Dhoni decided to quit international cricket.

I do not want to use the word retirement because you are too young and energetic to retire, PM Mr. Modi wrote.

The 33-year-old Raina thanked the Prime Minister. When we play, we give our blood & sweat for the nation. No better appreciation than being loved by the people of this country and even more by the countrys PM. Thank you @narendraMr. Modi ji for your words of appreciation & best wishes. I accept them with gratitude. Jai Hind, the cricketer tweeted.

India can never forget your inspiring role during the 2011 World Cup especially during the later matches. I saw you live in action at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, during the Quarter Final against Australia. Your anchoring innings had a big role to play in our teams victory. I can confidently say that most fans will miss your elegant cover drives, one which I was lucky to witness that day, said the PM.

The PM also described Raina as the perfect team-man who enjoyed others successes.

Suresh Raina will always be synonymous with team spirit. You played not for personal glory but for the glory of your team and the glory of India. Your enthusiasm on the field was infectious and we could all witness that you would be among the first and most animated players to celebrate the fall of opposing teams wicket, the PM wrote.

The Prime Ministers appreciation letter also acknowledged him fielding skills.

Your fielding was exemplary and inspiring. Some of the best catches in recent international cricket have your distinctive imprint. It would take days to count the number of runs you saved with your alertness on the field.

The Prime Minister also praised Raina for his participation in social initiatives like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and the cause of womens empowerment.

No Events, No Problem: How The Creatives Behind The Annual CultureCon Conference Are Leveling Up With New Digital Offerings – Forbes

Imani Ellis, Founder of The Creative Collective NYC and CultureCon

In the midst of a season where stay-at-home orders are in full effect, what does it look like to grow a community dedicated to curating events specifically for creatives of color? For Imani Ellis, Founder of The Creative Collective NYC and CultureCon, answering this question meant that the team behind what has become the go-to conference for creatives of color had to completely reimagine their core offerings.

Like so many, weve had to pivot and go back to the drawing board, said Ellis in our recent interview. Were constantly asking ourselves, What does our community need more of? and What are we going to do about it? With the help of these routine questions, The Creative Collective NYC (CCNYC) team has been able to reach an unprecedented breakthrough for their community. Ellis was kind enough to share here what their followers can expect next and how she and her team have been able to remain innovative, reaching higher heights during a time thats presented them with quite possibly their most unique challenge yet.

Remember Why You Started

Having in-person events has been a part of our DNA from day one, Ellis expressed referring to events like the annual CultureCon conference. What began as a Bible-study-sized brave space in Ellis Harlem, NY apartment had ballooned to nearly 2,500 attendees by 2019. Striving to keep the same vibe of intimate connection established from its inception, the NYC-based brand had still grown rapidly enough to have planned a much-anticipated expansion to Atlanta in the upcoming year.

Prior to the rolling shutdowns triggered by the rapid-fire spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, CCNYC had been hosting up to four in-person events per month. By CultureCons third year theyd welcomed some of the industrys most successful creatives of color to join the cause for their community like Will Smith, Tracee Ellis Ross, Regina King, Spike Lee, Lena Waith and Elaine Welteroth. They also had plans of creating a job fair and a market featuring Black-owned businesses. But just as things were beginning to pick up, the nation shut down, leaving Ellis and her team in the same boat as many other event-focused brands who needed to quickly figure out ways to reach and serve their communities.

CCNYCs solution had to be as creative as the thousands of loyal attendees who flocked to their community-hosted events each year. So when postponements quickly turned into cancellations, CCNYC stayed true to their mission of collective effort in service of their communities and wasted no time in reaching out to their community to see what they wanted most during this time.

Lean On What You Know

Recognizing that a large part of their community had begun to use the time during the pandemic as an opportunity to reimagine what their true interests looked like and improve their skill sets, the CCNYC team reached out across their increasingly busy social media channels for feedback on which direction they should move next. We polled about 5,000 of our community members and asked them what they wanted more of - virtual happy hours or skill-based workshops, Ellis recalls. 95% said they preferred a skill-based workshop, so we set out to build a digital platform that would deliver that and then some.

Once it was decided that they were creating a brand new platform, the colleagues that Ellis mentions as some of the most incredibly talented and hard-working people she knows, jumped right to work. We talked through course ideas and prioritized topics wed actually want to learn more about, then started identifying talent and building out curriculums. With an enduring mission to help those creatives who identify as POC to live and learn unapologetically as their full selves, CCNYC leaned on their 360-degree approach of catering to their audience by building the Creative Curriculum, a dynamic learning website curated specifically for creatives of color launching today.

Team photo, CultureCon & The Creative Collective NYC

Creative Curriculum originally began as short takeovers on the brands Instagram page that showcased helpful skills on a variety of topics. Today this space has transformed into a full-service digital suite meant for community empowerment and invaluable resource sharing. This new digital platform will be presented by the all-in-one website building platform, Squarespace. Catering to the specific needs and lifestyles of CCNYCs most curious and ambitious Black and Brown community members, the Creative Curriculum will feature four tailored tracks focusing on entrepreneurship, creative innovation, professional and personal development as well as financial health and literacy.

We're proud to partner and collaborate with The Creative Collective NYC to help develop their new Creative Curriculum program, which we see as an incredible digital resource for creatives of color looking for support in getting their projects off the ground, said Kinjil Mathur, Chief Marketing Officer, Squarespace. The Creative Collective NYC's mission of providing a hub to inspire and educate the multicultural creative community aligns perfectly with Squarespace's mission to equip anyone with an idea or dream the tools they need to succeed."

Employing keynote conversations and masterclasses given by larger-than-life creative minds like Gabrielle Union-Wade, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Grammy-Award winning artist Kandi Burruss, guests will have the option to follow suggested tracks of learning or combine their favorite courses to create a custom curriculum of their own. And with on-demand videos (workshops can be watched nonstop for up to 30 days) making it easier for creatives to learn on their schedules, its obvious how enthusiastic the CCNYC team remains when it comes to creating spaces that address the whole individual.

We believe that establishing these creative ecosystems can lead to real change and that over time, this can lend itself to an overall economic shift with an emphasis on the importance of ownership, shares Ellis.

Never Forget What Youve Been Working For

Through their focus on having the right people in the right roles, putting effective processes in place, and striving for excellent performance no matter the project, the CCNYC team has demonstrated the importance of both leadership in service as well as effective teamwork. No one is self-made - not even those who refer to themselves as such, Ellis asserts. Its the team behind the mission that moves the needle. Its the collective effort of many that makes it all possible. Theres a common misconception that as an entrepreneur youll finally get to work for yourself...WRONG, she emphasizes. Youre working for your team, for your community, and for the vision youve created.

For any entrepreneur whos just begun their journey or whos maybe even become an expert in their own right, during uncertain times its not at all out of the ordinary to question whether or not you were built for such an unpredictable season. But according to Ellis, whos shown remarkable resilience during this time, self-awareness is key to coming out on top. You shouldnt believe every thought that you have - especially when youre going through a difficult time, urges Ellis. I would advise every entrepreneur to constantly take inventory of how theyre doing personally and professionally, she explains. There is a difference between a difficult moment and a difficult life and you have to be honest with yourself [about what] youre experiencing.

Find Joy In The Journey

Entrepreneurship isnt for everyone and thats totally okay, continued Ellis. There is no shame in trying something new or closing one chapter to begin a new one. Mentioning how weve all begun to reframe what success looks like, Ellis hopes that Millennial creatives continue to pursue the things that they love; no longer glorifying burn out culture, but doing those things that make them happy. Taking to estate sales on the weekends, Ellis has kept her curiosity high and her stress low by digging through piles of historical artifacts in her free time. Viewing the joy shes gained from the activities shes grown to love as absolutely necessary for achieving and maintaining success, the thriving entrepreneur is committed to living a full life not entirely defined by business decisions and career highlights.

You truly have to live in your truth and do your best to step out of the shadow of the worlds expectationseverything else will follow.

As I write, the postmaster general has decided to stand down on disrupting the mail flow for the general election Nov. 3. However, based on his previous behavior and conflicts of interest, I don't trust him.

In Martin County, a safer way than mailing it is to hand-carry the ballot to the Martin County election office on the corner of Martin Luther King and Dixie Highway, up to the last minutes of the election. There is a slot outside or you can bring it in.

From Oct. 19 through Oct. 31 you can bring it inside any libraryin Martin County.

Check with the election office on any details. Make your vote count.

Back when I was in school, we were taught that you could not go on to the second lesson until you mastered the first lesson. If you did move forward without a full grasp of the first lesson, you were surely going to stumble and fail on the second lesson.

As we try to debate the Second Amendment, and come up with solutions on gun control, I wonder if the real root cause is not in the Second Amendment? It seems most of the mass shootings stem from someones hatred against another persons or groups freedom, religion, or right of expression. Those are First Amendment guarantees.

I grew up with guns. Some of my fondest memories as a kid was taking my gun into the woods with friends, setting up bottles or cans, and shooting at them to see who was the better shot. In addition to having fun, it also taught you respect and responsibility, because you knew the danger involved. I would hate to see that privilege taken way.

So, as we fight not to have that privilege taken away, I think we take the wrong approach. We say that weapons are there for our protection. The reality is that no personal firearm, regardless of its capabilities, would defend you against an attack from a foreign country, as it would have back when the Second Amendment was written. You would be no match for such arsenals as tanks, missiles, rockets, fighter jets, bombers, and nuclear bombs.

So my question is: What are you really protected against? Certainly not an attack from a foreign country. My guess: someone who hasnt quite mastered the first lesson (the First Amendment). The next time you really want to stand up and fight for the Second Amendment, start and practice the First Amendment.

Mike Bentz, Stuart

I was so sad to hear about the shops and restaurants in Port St. Lucie West. Having lived in PSL West for over 15 years I cannot understand why the snowbird bill that is before Congress again (vetoed by President Obama) is not passed. I am a Canadian and this bill sponsored by Sen. Marco Rubio would allow seniors to stay in your wonderful country for eight instead of six months. Many Americans do not realize that we are only allowed 182 days in America and being law-abiding people we adhere to the law.

My wife and I can not access any government programs, we have health insurance and love to dine out, buy things and generally enjoy the area. The statistics for snowbirds spending is well documented. Why not increase it by a third?

The only negative reason I have been able to find is that this is an immigration issue and part of a bigger picture. No offense, but I do not want to immigrate and this is a bipartisan bill. Our government lacks common sense just like yours but tell my barber, grocery store worker or favorite waiter in PSL that this makes sense.

I last heard it was before Homeland Security, and an all-out attack from Canadian seniors could be a serious national disaster.

Looking forward to again returning this November. I'm sure my wife's shopping will stimulate the local economy and I hope there are many restaurants open for our dining pleasure.

Murray Chalmers, Port St. Lucie

As I was watching the president of this rich country doing another one of his campaign speeches from his country club, surrounded by his (except for one) white-privilege millionaire members and donors, I was wondering how his unemployed loyal minions were reacting to the crumbs he was tossing at them by signing an executive order that would givethem $400 a week and no payroll taxes.

Am I missing something here? You do not get a paycheck, so you do not pay payroll taxes, really.

Trumps Republican minions refused to vote on the $600 that the Democrats felt was needed, which came to $31,200 year, only $5,000 above the federal poverty guideline for a family of four. The $400 a week comes to $20,800 a year, which is $5,400 less than the $26,200 federal poverty guide line for 2020.

On the other hand the living wage in the United States is $16.54 per hour, or $68,808 per year, in 2019, before taxes for a family of four (two working adults, two children). However, since our president is only interested in lining his pockets,he would not have been briefed on this fact.

I guess Trump agrees with his Republican fat cats: Keep the masses barefoot and pregnant and let them eat the crumbs thrown at them and expect them to thank him for all he has done for them.

Campaign Beat: Greens, Guns And Preexisting Conditions – MTPR

Campaign Beat: Greens, Guns And Preexisting Conditions

Montana's Secretary of State loses his battle to keep Green Party candidates on the ballot. New campaign ads focus on family and gun rights. The two candidates for governor release their health care plans. The national party conventions may hold little sway over Montana races. And Governor Bullock rebukes State School Superintendent Elsie Arntzen in their ongoing dispute over school masking policy

Listen now on Campaign Beat with Sally Mauk, Rob Saldin and Holly Michels.

Mauk Holly, when the state Supreme Court recently ruled to keep the Republican-backed Green Party candidates off the ballot we thought that was the end of it. But now Secretary of State Corey Stapleton plans to appeal that decision to the U.S. Supreme Court. Is Stapleton a closet fan of the Green Party? What's going on?

Michels Yeah, so it has been a pretty hectic last couple of days. Like you said, the Montana Supreme Court did uphold a lower court decision that removed the Green Party from the ballot. People had asked for their signatures to be removed from petitions that qualified the Greens once they found out, like you said, the Republican Party financed that effort. On Thursday, which was the deadline for Stapleton to certify the ballot in Montana, he sent a three paragraph press release that morning saying that he was going to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. He also asked on Thursday for the state Supreme Court here to issue a stay on its own order trying to delay Stapleton from certifying a ballot that would include the Green Party. Stapleton argued if for some reason the U.S. Supreme Court accepted his appeal and did decide the Greens should be removed from the ballot, he could somehow cover up those names or something and just adapt the ballot later. That's how things shook out. But been lot of back and forth. We do now have the certified ballot. It does not include the Green Party, though Stapleton did include a little addendum in the certification document noting his appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mauk My guess Holly is that federal justices will decline to hear the case.

Michels Yeah, it is pretty unlikely this appeal will get taken up by the Supreme Court just to start with. They really don't accept that many cases, except maybe 100, 250 of the more than 7,000 that they're asked to look at every year. There's also the issue of it might not be a case that they are able to review. They can't really review cases that just deal with state law. There needs to be a bigger federal issue there. And the lower district court ruling in Helena really only dealt with if Stapleton followed administrative duties that are laid out in state law. We haven't seen the state Supreme Court's full order, so we don't really know if they expanded to include in their deliberations something else. But as of now, it looks like this might not even be a case the U.S. Supreme Court could review.

Mauk All right. And meanwhile, as you said, the ballot has been certified and the Green Party candidates are not going to be on the ballot. So that's kind of the bottom line.

Rob in the Senate race Governor Bullock's campaign put out a new ad featuring the governor's wife, Lisa, and their three kids. Here's that ad.

[Bullock family]: I'm Caroline Bullock. I'm Alex. And I'm Cam. Our dad likes to talk about us. This time we're going to talk about him.

[Lisa Bullock]: They're teenagers. What could go wrong?

[Bullock family]: My dad loves Montana, it's where he grew up. He was raised in a single parent household and met our mom, Lisa, at the same school we go to go. Go Bengals!

I love fishing with him. I love running with my dad. He was by my side when I got my first buck.

We'll be hiking, then he'll always be like, "you know what's great? Every one of us owns these public lands.

I'm really proud of the work that he's done for our education system. He's been fighting in secret money in politics since before I was born.

[Lisa Bullock] Practically since he was born.

[Bullock family]I love teasing him. He's talking, he's like this ... He does not know how to whisper. [imitating] 'This is Steve Bullock.'

[Lisa Bullock] I hope they don't bring up the dance scene.

[Bullock family] He may not be a great dancer, but he is a great dad. He's doing the best job that he can for my generation and for the generations to come. And if you want to know what kind of senator he'll be, Just look at what he's done as governor.

[Steve Bullock] I'm Steve Bullock, and you bet I approve this message.

Mauk This ad Rob is funny and heartwarming and strengthens Bullock's image as an all around good guy.

Saldin Yeah. Yeah. It's a welcome change, isn't it? It's a classic positive ad. It features his kids, obviously. It's funny and endearing. It has a light touch. It humanizes Bullock and reinforces the image he wants us to have of him as just a fundamentally decent guy who's like us. And it manages to do all of that on a personal level while also connecting to a couple policy issues; public lands and education that are important Bullock. So it's all just an effective reminder, I think, of why Montanans like him.

You know, Sally, perhaps not coincidentally, I noticed that a few days after this one popped, Daines put out a similar video of his own over Twitter, of his family, wishing him a happy birthday. That one's not an official ad; at least not yet. But I thought that clip also worked well for similar reasons.

As a general rule, I do think these kinds of ads are most useful when a candidate isn't well-known. So in the context of the big three Montana campaigns in this cycle, this kind of thing would probably be even more effective, carry more bang for the buck, for candidates like Matt Rosendale and Kathleen Williams, who are somewhat less well known, I think, than Bullock and Daines. And especially I mean, the one I think you could really benefit from this kind of stuff would be Mike Cooney, who's less well-known than all the rest. So relative to them, you know, name I.D., it's not a problem for Bullock and Daines, but it's still a welcome break from the barrage of negative ads that we've been seeing, which are all designed to run up disapproval ratings on your opponent. So these positive ads work to counter those negative impressions. And this one featuring Bullock family as it's just about as good as it gets on that front.

Mauk Meanwhile, his opponent, Steve Daines, has a new ad that goes to a well-trod tried and true Montana attack, gun rights.

[Daines]: When it comes to the Second Amendment you have a clear choice. I'm a fifth generation Montanan who will always defend our Second Amendment rights. I'm endorsed by the NRA and received an A plus rating. They gave Steve Bullock an F. And here's why. Steve Bullock is ready to help Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden pass the most radical gun control laws in our nation's history. I'm Steve Daines and I approve this message because our Second Amendment rights must be protected.

Mauk This ad, Rob, shows Daines leaning on a fence with mountains in the background, looking very Montana. But I do wonder if touting the backing of the NRA plays as well now as it used to given the recent allegations of major corruption of the group's leaders. What do you think?

Saldin You know, Sally, I tend to think this still works pretty well for Daines. And we knew this kind of thing was coming. You know, the one big downside to Bullock's run for president was that it forced him to move to the left on some issues; guns being the most notable. And, you know, that made all the sense in the world when you're trying to be the Democratic Party's presidential nominee. But it's not necessarily best practices when you're trying to be the U.S. senator from Montana. The positions Bullock took on guns, it's just a little out of step with how successful Democrats in Montana handle the issue and how Bullock himself handled the issue prior to his presidential run. So I think it is a liability for him, and Daines is hitting him hard on it.

That said, of course, it's worth pointing out that Bullock's position in the presidential was far from extreme. He wanted to increase background checks, do red flag warnings, ban assault weapons. He also talked, I thought, pretty movingly, actually, about his nephew who was killed in a school shooting. But that's not something he talked about much before a presidential run. We could also say all those policy proposals are pretty mild stuff, particularly in comparison to what some of the other Democrats, I mean, notably, like Beto O'Rourke, were saying. So in the big scheme of things Bullock is well in line with public opinion on this issue. And yet, you know, Holly, I thought you made a great point, what, a week or two ago on this? You know, our debate over guns has just become so ridiculously polarized. It's entirely reasonable to be both a proud gun owner or a supporter of the Second Amendment while also supporting something like background checks.

Mauk Holly in the governor's race, both candidates, Mike Cooney and Greg Gianforte, recently laid out their health care plans and both have the same goals to make health care affordable and accessible to Montanans. But they differ on how. And Cooney remains a staunch supporter of the Affordable Care Act, while Gianforte has been an opponent of the ACA, which now provides health coverage for tens of thousands of Montanans. That, to me stuck out is the main difference in their plans.

Michels Yep, I agree with you there. Cooney made really clear his support for the ACA and continuing Medicaid expansion in Montana. Medicaid expansion covers about 85,000 Montanans now, and is allowed for under the ACA. Cooney also made a point about talking about preserving protections for people with preexisting conditions. He said that he would like to see state law change, codify those protections within Montana law. He also stopped short of saying he would ask for a bill that would remove work requirements from the Medicaid program in Montana, but said he would support that kind of effort.

For Gianforte, he said that he recognizes the safety net Medicaid expansion provides in Montana, but he talks about wanting tighter asset and income verification on the program. I think something that's hard for Republicans to talk about this cycle is preserving protections for people with preexisting conditions. Gianforte points out he has co-sponsored and voted for bills that would protect coverage for people with preexisting conditions. But none of those have passed. So if the ACA were to be repealed or fall under some other mechanism, that provision would go away and people with preexisting conditions could be denied insurance coverage. Another difficulty for Republicans is President Trump's Department of Justice has filed a brief with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to strike down the entire. ACA in a case that they'll hear after the November election. So that puts Republicans like Gianforte who support Trump in a difficult spot where they'll say they support protection for preexisting conditions, but at the same time the administration has asked in a brief for the Supreme Court to strike down the entire ACA, including that provision.

Mauk Rob, Democrats held their national convention this week with some memorable speeches about what's at stake in this election. And Republicans, of course, will hold their convention next week. Do you think these national conventions sway voters outside of the party base? What's their impact? Normally, and what do you think it will be in this unusual year?

Saldin This is an unusual year, although one thing is consistent. You know, the thing that sticks out to me on the Democratic side is that these conventions are always a little tricky for Montana Democrats to navigate. Back in 2008 Brian Schweitzer gave a very memorable speech at that convention in Denver. But Schweitzer is the anomaly. Tester and Bullock have typically chosen to keep their distance from these things, I think, because they don't want to be associated too closely with the National Party. And we saw that kind of tension again this week from Bullock when he came out against the Democratic Party platform on the basis of oil and gas development and the death penalty and policing; basically saying on all those issues that the National Party is too far to the left. So clearly, Bullock is a bit uncomfortable with being tied too closely with those National Party figures, the people who Daines is very eagerly trying to tie him to. In fact, we saw that in that NRA ad we talked about earlier.

Mauk Well, Holly state schools superintendent Elsie Arntzen sent another letter of complaint to Governor Bullock about school masking policy. She's feeling very left out. But the governor has sent her a sharp response.

Michels Yeah, we've talked about on this show before, this ongoing dispute between Arntzen and Bullock over how the directives the governor has issued; closure of schools in March, the mask mandate that earlier this month he extended to apply to public and private K - 12 schools, how each of their offices interact with each other over making those decisions.

Arntzen said that she feels like she has been cut out of the process. In Bullock's letter Friday morning he pretty clearly is accusing Arntzen of making statements to the press that contradict what he says is going on in the background. Bullock is saying he has sought-out ways to involve Arntzen and her staff in the process, and they've provided letters between the two offices that show there's been efforts to have some consultation there. In Bullock's letter he says that Arntzen's response has been to "stonewall privately and to claim publicly that you have been shut out. This is not a time for political posturing.".

So I think it was kind of coming to a head maybe. I think part of what's going on here is that under the emergency order Montana has been in since March, all these broad powers to make these decisions do fall to the governor and then, to some extent, the state health department. So it wouldn't be Arntzen who has the ability to make these choices. I think she is trying to say she wants more involvement. Bullock is trying to say, we've tried to include you. And I think this being an election year probably is part of why this has been such a high-profile dispute too.

Mauk You think?

There was a lot going on this week. Next week will likely be the same. And Rob and Holly, we'll talk to then. Thanks.

How Angry Is Donald Trump at Portland This Week? We Updated the Presidential Rage-O-Meter. – Willamette Week

Since President Donald Trump deployed federal police to Portland, he can talk of little else. Perhaps that's because he sees the images of civil unrest in our streets as a winning issue for his reelection campaign. It could signal his eagerness to "send in the National Guard," as he's previously threatened. Maybe he just really likes saying "Portland." Whatever the reason, at most of his press briefingsfrom Aug. 11 through 17, they were predominantly held in the White Househe discusses our city.

How fixated is he? We decided to conduct a regular review of his official remarks, as compiled by the White House Press Office, to ascertain how angry the president is with Portland this week.

How many times did the president say the word "Portland" in official remarks last week? 9

What was his harshest appraisal?"What you're seeing in Portland and Seattle, New York, Chicago is really the Democrat road map for America," he said on Aug. 11. "They want every city in America to resemble Portland, in a form. They want to pass federal legislation gutting and hamstringing every police department in America. They want to get rid of your Second Amendment. They want to end cash bail, close prisons, defund police departmentsor at least largely defund."

On Fox News, Palin used a sexist smear to suggest Harris betrayed her convictions. – The New York Times

Fox News hosts on Wednesday night devoted four hours to Day 3 of the Democratic convention but carried little of the convention itself.

Instead, the programming included more criticism of the Democratic Party; its nominee, Joseph R. Biden Jr.; his running mate, Senator Kamala Harris; former President Barack Obama; and the 2016 Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton.

An example: The host Tucker Carlson asked Sarah Palin if there was anything she could have done in 2008, when she was the Republican vice-presidential nominee, to warrant what she and Mr. Carlson described as the fawning media coverage that Ms. Harris is enjoying.

I would not have prostituted myself in terms of changing any of my positions in order to garner better press, Ms. Palin said.

For instance, she elaborated, I am all about all of our freedoms, including the Second Amendment, and I would not, for instance, say yeah, you know, mandatory gun confiscation, which is what the Democrats are rooting for and pulling for. I would never have gone there in order to get that good coverage.

Ms. Palin was apparently referring to the false claim that Ms. Harris has threatened to send the police to peoples houses to take their guns.

Ms. Palins words marked a change in tone from last week, when she congratulated Ms. Harris on Instagram and offered tips like, Dont get muzzled connect with media and voters in your own unique way.

Mr. Carlson summed up the convention as platitudes heaped upon clichs smothered in a thick sauce of self-righteousness and stupidity, adding, We only tune in because its our job.

The host Sean Hannity cut away to the actual convention only to show about 20 seconds of remarks by Mrs. Clinton, calling her the twice-failed candidate.

The host Laura Ingraham wrapped up the night by criticizing Mr. Obamas policies on trade, immigration and international affairs.

Hes the man who solved none of these terrible issues and problems that theyre all talking about during his eight years in office, she said. The Obama pixie dust he was sprinkling tonight was more like sand in your eyes.

Automation Realities in the Context of SOAR – Security Intelligence

Anyone who has spent time on repetitive, manual tasks understands how tedious and cumbersome this work can be and how errors are commonplace. If only machines could do this work for us. This is the promise of automation: the application of technology, programs, robotics or processes to achieve outcomes with minimal human input.

Automationmakesformerly arduous, time-intensive processes complete in a fraction of the time, revolutionizing entire industries. One of the best-known examples was the introduction of spreadsheets, which replaced manual bookkeeping and fundamentally changed the nature of the accounting industry worldwide. Likewise, approximately three-fourths of current trading on the U.S. stock market is done through automation.

For years, security veterans feared the automation cure could be worse than the disease, simply making mistakes more quickly or otherwise yielding unintended consequences. Itwas only a matter of time until the technology matured to thepoint that its benefits became undeniable. This is perhaps most notably shown by the adoption of Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR) platforms, which improve response times, address the security skills gap, and reduce complexity.

Adoption to date has already driven significant improvements. In a recent study by the Ponemon Institute, automation stood out as a differentiator for companies with high cyber resilience. In fact, 55% of high performers in the studystated their cyber resilience improved due to the implementation of automation tools, compared to 37% of other organizations.

Here, we examine the hype around automation and share some common automation pitfalls to help you avoid them.

Given the promise of automation, it is tempting to dive headfirst into solving an initial use case (like phishing) without considering broader people, process and technology considerations. The downside to jumping into the deep end can range from architectural mistakes that are expensive to undo, to unintended consequences from executing ill-informed actions.

Automation benefits may be proven and widespread, but there are several realities to know, such as:

Automation takes time. Automation is not an easy fix that happens overnight by deploying some software. Rather, automation requires an investment in time and resources in order to maximize its benefits. One of the most important prerequisites of automation for any organization is understanding its processes, which are usually more complex and unique than it seems. A clear view of the current state is needed in order to identify processes and tasks to automate. Yet, it is not always attainable. According to the Ponemon Cyber Resilient Organization study, only 40% of organizations use attack-specific playbooks, which outline the step-by-step response to specific attacks like malware or phishing.

Out-of-the-box playbooks are typically generic, requiring time and skill to be customized to a companys unique standard operating procedures. This may require new skills, such as business process expertise to help define process flows or Python coding skills to tune an integration. The most successful automation projects are journeys. Organizations crawl, walk and run their way to continuous improvement.

Automation is not free. A common notion exists that automation is free. This can be misinterpreted given the ease with which third-party security and IT tool integrations can be downloaded and installed. The truth, however, is these integrations typically require customization to be effective given the uniqueness of an organizations IT environment. In its report Make Sure Your Organization Is Mature Enough for SOAR, Gartner observed that it is a fallacy to believe that automation-based vendor products can work effectively without customization.

Even free customizations to address this reality have a shelf life. Sooner or later they break because the tool it integrates with changes, something else in the infrastructure changes, processes need to be updated, or any number of other reasons given all the moving parts.

Automation wont eliminate people. Very few use cases can be automated end-to-end without human intervention. At some point, people typically provide interpretation and analysis of the best course of action. For example, in a ransomware incident, people should validate the presence of backups and determine if paying the ransom is an option. In other cases, you simply want to document approvals before taking certain actions.

In addition, automation of manual tasks helps to free up security analysts to focus on higher value activities. For example, many of the initial steps can be completed automatically during incident investigation. They provide the security analyst valuable insight from the moment they first start working on the incident and helping inform the next step.

Used effectively, automation can be an incredibly powerful tool in accelerating incident response. However, it is important to keep in mind that automation is just the A in SOAR.

In our next article, well talk about how to leverage automation as part of a broader SOAR strategy that can not only drive new levels of efficiency but actually transform securitys relationship to the organization.

To learn more about automation and the journey to SOAR, join the upcoming webinar SOAR Automation How does it really work? at 11 am (EDT) August 25, 2020. Listen to the experts and myself discuss automation in more detail.

How robotics and automation could create new jobs in the new normal – VentureBeat

This article is part of a VB special issue. Read the full series: Automation and jobs in the new normal.

Depending on who you ask, AI and automation will either destroy jobsor createnew ones.In reality, a greater push toward automation will probably both kill and create jobs human workers will become redundant in certain spheres, sure, but many new roles will likely crop up. A report last year from PA Consulting, titled People and machines: From hype to reality, supports this assertion, predicting that AI and automation will lead to a net gain in job numbers. This is pretty much in line with findings from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), a pan-governmental economic body spanning 36 member countries, which noted that employment in total may continue to rise even if automation disrupts specific industries.

Automation has gained increased attention amid the great social distancing experiment sparked by COVID-19. But its too early to say whether the pandemic will expedite automation across all industries. Recent LinkedIn data suggests AI hiring slowed during the crisis, but there are plenty of cases where automation could help people adhere to social distancing protocols from robot baristas and cleaners to commercial drones.

Of course, any discussion about automation invariably raises the question of what it means for jobs.

As were still in the early stages of a broader shift to AI and automation, its not easy to fully envisage what new jobs could crop up and which will be lost.

Slamcore is a London-based startup pushing to commercialize AI algorithms that help robots gain situational awareness from sensor data. Slamcore cofounder and CEO Owen Nicholson says we only have to look at some of todays jobs to realize how difficult it can be to forecast the future.

Contrary to some beliefs, I see robots as creating vast amounts of new jobs in the future, he said. Just like 50 years ago a website designer, vlogger, or database architect were not things, over the next 50 years we will see many new types of job emerge.

Nicholson cites robot pilots as an example.

Ubiquitous, truly autonomous robots are still a long way from reality, so with semi-autonomous capabilities with humans in the loop, we can achieve much better performance overall and generate a brand-new job sector, he added.

Theres a growing consensus that humans will work in conjunction with robots, performing complementary roles that play to their respective strengths.

San Diego-based Brain Corp recently locked down $36 million to help meet the growing demand for autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) across industries affected by the pandemic from health care to retail. Brain Corp is the company behind BrainOS, an operating system that integrates with hardware and sensors and serves as the brains for delivery robots used in warehouses, factories, and retail stores. BrainOS also powers self-driving floor cleaners that assist human workers. The machines come equipped with a range of sensors, including lidar and 3D time-of-flight (ToF) sensors, to self-navigate in dynamic environments.

Above: Robotic floor cleaners powered by BrainOS.

Brain Corp said demand for BrainOS-powered cleaning robots has surged amid the COVID-19 crisis, with retail usage growing 24% in April 2020 alone. A significant percentage of this uptick 68% is occurring during daytime hours, showing that businesses are cleaning more frequently and operating the technology during peak times, Brain Corp executive Michel Spruijt told VentureBeat.

The robots generate a significant amount of performance data, which is automatically compiled into reports that need to be interpreted, assessed, and analyzed to improve operation and fleet performance. While much of this work could be incorporated into existing roles, such tasks may eventually require dedicated employees, leading to the creation of new jobs.

Managers can view the routes being cleaned, take a look at quantitative metrics such as run time and task frequency, and receive notifications around diagnostics and relevant software updates, Spruijt said. An understanding of these reports and how to successfully interpret and apply this data will be imperative in order to improve store operations using automated technologies.

The robots are typically trained to follow routes through a teach and repeat method, with human workers guiding them along a cleaning route and making adjustments if the environment changes. As Spruijt is quick to point out, this process proactively includes humans.

The robot is not a functional robot without the human, he said.

Above: Cleaning equipment giant Tennant develops machines that use BrainOS.

Additional new jobs could include maintenance workers to ensure the AMRs are functioning properly.

The process of physically building a robot and successfully maintaining it in the field requires a set of new or enhanced skills, which are likely to increase alongside adoption of AMRs, Spruijt said. As manufacturing lines start to ramp up robot production, [skill sets such as] tooling, light manufacturing, and familiarity with new hardware like touchscreens and lidars will be necessary. Once in the field, service providers with applied knowledge around robot maintenance and deployment are also important in ensuring success.

Humans and robots have distinct strengths and weaknesses, which is why a human-in-the-loop model makes sense for companies embracing automation. Veo Robotics is a Waltham, Massachusetts-based startup that uses computer vision and 3D sensing to give industrial robots greater perception. Its Veo FreeMove system, which is due to launch next year, is designed to help manufacturers coordinate the best attributes of robots and humans, meaning its neither completely manual nor completely automated.

What Veo does is enable a middle path, one where human workers with their flexibility, ingenuity, and dexterity can do the parts that humans are good at, while robots with their tirelessness and strength can help them by positioning parts or performing other elements of the process that are hard for the human worker, Veo Robotics CEO and founder Patrick Sobalvarro explained. Its much quicker and cheaper to set up a work cell like this than to try to completely automate it because the human worker is able to do exactly the parts that are so hard to do automatically since they involve dexterity, sensing, and judgment.

This means skilled welders will spend more time welding and less time fixturing, and quality technicians will spend more time measuring and less time moving parts around, Sobalvarro added. Everyone will be more comfortable and get more products built.

As industries strive to establish a new normal following the pandemic, human-robot collaboration could prove invaluable.

Manufacturers have to reduce human density in factories to comply with these new [social distancing] rules, Sobalvarro continued. The human-robot collaboration that Veos system provides can address this, as it means that instead of having two humans working closely together in a work cell, you will have a human and a robot working together.

Miso Robotics has been deploying its burger-flipping bots across the U.S. over the past few years. The company recently unveiled a next-gen robotic assistant called ROAR (robot on a rail) that can move between cooking stations, working the deep fryer and flipping burgers.

With widespread lockdowns, restaurants have been among the hardest hit by COVID-19. CEO Buck Jordan naturally believes automation will play a big role in helping the food industry get back on its feet.

Now more than ever, [as] we are facing real new challenges and a whole new normal, navigating it is going to heavily fall on technology. And the restaurant industry is a prime example where automation needs to come in, in order to sustain the industry, drive growth, and create new job opportunities, he said. Incorporating automation into commercial food preparation empowers restaurant operators to safely reopen [and] attract customers with enhanced health and safety, as food comes into reduced contact with humans and points of contamination. [This] ultimately gives them the tools needed to increase production speeds and meet delivery and takeout demands even in the face of new social distancing requirements that limit a full staff in the kitchen.

This all sounds like a death knell for traditional kitchen jobs, but if restaurants arent able to meet safety guidelines, the reality could be much worse.

Without giving restaurants the solutions they need to reopen and recover, the issue wont be robots taking jobs. The real issue will be that theres no jobs to take because restaurants cant turn the profit they need to stay open, much less hire or create new job opportunities, Jordan continued.

While drones incorporate various facets of automation, most require an operator to manage and oversee their deployment. People are needed to program flight paths and step in when things go wrong, and as with other industries perform maintenance.

The commercial drone industry was in ascendance before COVID-19 struck, with reports suggesting the market would grow more than fivefold by 2026 from $1.2 billion in 2018. However, the pandemic seems to have increased demand for drone services in areas such as medical supply deliveries and site inspections. Mike Winn, cofounder and CEO of drone data software platform DroneDeploy, told VentureBeat the company had expected demand to grow across more than 10 industries in 2020 and COVID-19 has only heightened that interest.

Weve already seen growth in drone operations this year, despite COVID-19, Winn said. Our customer data showed 130% year-on-year growth among our active enterprise pilots, with minimal pandemic disruption from April 2019 to April 2020, and we just saw our greatest number of flights ever in May.

The San Francisco-based companys platform allows commercial drone operators to map, survey, and inspect aerial images. These can be used to harness data in industries ranging from agriculture to mining, construction, and insurance.

Above: DroneDeploy provides data capture and mapping software for commercial drone operators.

Even if automation doesnt create many jobs off the bat, drones offer a glimpse into the way traditional roles may evolve, with field engineers gradually shifting into a completely new role.

Weve definitely seen companies training their teams on new skill sets involving drones, Winn said. For example, drone operator is a quickly growing job title. Many field engineers are becoming drone operators as they have been wrapping drones into their roles more and more. In agriculture, this means capturing live field data, applying chemicals with precision, and more.

Dimitri Onistsuk is the cofounder of Freedom Robotics, a San Francisco-based company that builds software to control and monitor fleets of robots. Onistsuk said he is seeing certain roles evolve, and companies may need to expand their workforce to include dedicated specialists.

Companies need to broaden the skill range of their employees, Onistsuk said. For example, were seeing a bifurcation of robotics developers into engineers and operators. Because the demand for solutions is so high, its no longer a viable business decision to have engineers do operational tasks. Therefore it becomes important to have a higher-skilled individual focus on engineering and developing the robots their vision, their algorithms, and so on and have others focus on things like piloting, field operations, maintenance, and servicing.

Companies may have to reevaluate their workflow to ensure peoples skills are being used effectively. Its not efficient to send your top engineers across the country to fix a broken robot that is just sitting on the floor of an impatient customers site, Onistsuk added.

Like others in the robotics sphere, Onistsuk said Freedom Robotics has seen a dramatic increase in demand during the pandemic. More specifically, companies that were dabbling in the technology are now accelerating their plans.

Customers have always taken the potential of robotics seriously, but now were also seeing a much greater sense of urgency, where they are no longer waiting years to get their prototypes just right and are instead rapidly moving toward deployment, he said.

Onistsuk points to customers for real-world examples of how robots can augment the human workforce. These include teleoperator pilots and managers who supervise robots that are taking over some of the more mundane aspects of their role. In the case of pilots, we are seeing humans in the loop, where a semi-autonomous delivery vehicle encounters an exception, such as a reflective material inside a warehouse or a bush that is difficult to navigate around near a sidewalk, and a human takes over via GPS, remote control teleoperation, or a script to reset back to autonomy, he said. In the case of manufacturing, robots are delivering parts to a particular station where their human counterparts take them and add them to the assembly.

While it may be difficult to pin down the kinds of new roles that could emerge, it can be fun to speculate. Onistsuk considers a scenario in which a robotic snowplow struggles to tell the difference between a snowbank and a car underneath a layer of snow, requiring a remote operator to step in and interpret the scene and manually navigate if required. As new technologies mature in the coming years, well begin to get a clearer picture of the ways AI and automation will impact the workforce.

I think server and edge operations for robotics will be very important, where the necessary infrastructure is managed and assets are tracked, Onistsuk said. 5G will bring a tidal wave of possibilities and will have a big effect on robotics and will require a new set of technical skills. I think there will also be a new generation of hybrid workers for jobs that are around today but that will be done collaboratively with a robot sanitation, industrial inspection, surgery, and so on.

A 2018 report from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) noted that the industries likely to benefit most from AI are human and highly technical sectors, such as health care, education, and science. Teaching requires high levels of interpersonal skills that cannot easily be replaced by AI systems or robots, although they can be complemented by them to meet projected rising demand for education over time, the report found. As such, we only expect around 5% of educators to be displaced by AI, more than offset by job creation of 10%.

The report noted that machines could take on some of the more boring teaching tasks, such as marking homework or administering multiple choice tests. The report adds that the sectors more likely to experience net job losses are those with a high degree of repetitive and routine tasks.

One example is manufacturing, which PwC estimates will see 25% fewer jobs by 2037 as a direct result of automation. Meanwhile, 40% of existing transportation and storage jobs could be displaced by automation due to a rise in driverless vehicles and automated warehouses with less than half of those replaced by new types of jobs.

A recent report from the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) noted that there will be an operational stock of almost 4 million industrial robots in factories globally by 2022 and predicted high demand for robotics skills as part of the post-pandemic recovery process. The report added that governments will need to focus on education and training to equip their workforce with the necessary skills.

Even if AI and automation lead to net job creation across the board, there will be significant disruption and upheaval as the global workforce adapts to shifting demands. Some roles may become obsolete, while others may branch into new directions or lead to the creation of entirely new job titles. What is easier to predict, however, is the emphasis these changes will place on upskilling and retraining in the years ahead.

Using AI, automation to bolster network capacity planning – Federal News Network

Government networks are growing larger and more complex each day. Increasing numbers of network devices, servers and applications mean theres less leeway for downtime, hiccups or problems of any sort, not to mention bandwidth.

Fortunately, the tricky art of network capacity planning is getting help from new artificial intelligence and automation tools that can help government IT pros support network growth and scalability while accounting for the challenges of todays modern networking environments.

Lets look at some of these challenges and explore how AI and automation can help government IT pros efficiently use their resources to alleviate these issues:

The growing adoption of hybrid IT environments in government makes it hard to anticipate, plan, and manage network capacity. Legacy network monitoring tools for on-premises networks work well when the agency owns all the network devices, but what happens when it moves to the cloud?

Agencies need tools to scale across these dynamic environments, so they can achieve visibility into network performance across hybrid IT and use insights to make smart, informed capacity planning decisions. For instance, if users experience a degraded application experience, IT managers need deeper insights into whether the issue is with the app, the database connected to the app, systems where the app runs, or the network, such as monitoring critical network paths, so they can determine the appropriate measures needed to improve performance and health.

Todays networks are in a state of flux. Legacy networks were reasonably flat and static; IT knew where switches and personnel were located and could monitor and control traffic flow. But enterprise architectures have evolved to extraordinarily complex environments with billions of connected devices, applications and users.

In the climate of constant change, its imperative for federal IT teams to find ways to maximize network capacity in ways mindful of the bandwidth needs of both users and applications. They must also prioritize and dynamically allocate bandwidth for different applications, so capacity is scaled during peak times and reduced during off-peak hours.

However, without a common way to keep up with a constantly changing network, it can be hard to predict and scale to meet traffic demands, identify problems and bottlenecks, and be more proactive in dealing with issues.

For federal IT pros to address these growing challenges to network capacity planning, they need strong data. Data shines a light on the networks current performance, helps analyze bandwidth utilization and traffic patterns, and informs future bandwidth demand.

Until recently, the data needed for these insights was limited to static reporting on bandwidth utilization. By pairing AI and automation, IT can drive smart, agile network planning actions across the entire network infrastructure.

The first step towards this desired state is traffic monitoring. As the network grows, changes, and more applications and users are added, AI enables network planners to capture large volumes of data from different sources to more accurately and precisely measure network utilization down to the application level. This enables federal IT pros to correlate past performance with future trends, and in real-time for quick remediation.

The next step is using this data to model network behavior based on how applications perform in different scenarios, such as peak and off-peak periods, so the network can be appropriately right sized.

Depending on the risk appetite of the agency, these predictive insights can be combined with automated network configuration practices like software defined networking (SDN) to scale networks more efficiently, even across hybrid IT deployments. Instead of a single network engineer controlling a couple of hundred switches, they could potentially manage thousands from a single pane of glass.

In doing so, IT can elastically scale the network infrastructure as and when its needed to make smarter use of existing resources and budgets. If an increase in traffic is predicted for a critical app, SDN can quickly increase the pipe or change the way the traffic is being routed in an automated way, no human involvement required.

Together, AI and SDN allow federal IT teams to garner a more precise assessment of network capacity and performance utilization, so they can make real-time, automated decisions about capacity and avoid service degradation. Above all, with AI making the basic decisions about capacity and SDN applying a more automated approach to network provisioning, federal government IT managers will spend less time on the more mundane tasks of running agency networks and more time supporting strategic initiatives.

Is Automation the Future of the Supply Chain? | Technology – Supply Chain Digital – The Procurement & Supply Chain Platform

Certification for Automation

In a recent Manufacturing Skills Standard Council (MSSC) meeting, they announced a new, industry-led certification to provide companies with higher skilled technicians. "Certified Technician in Supply Chain Automation" (CT-SCA) will be a hands-on training and certification program, launched off the back of COVID-19.

Companies Implementing Automation

COVID-19 proved that the retail economy is becoming more e-commerce based, meaning orders shipped directly to consumers from large distribution centres have increased. This effect has encouraged the e-commerce industry to invest in automation technologies. Supply chain technologies are becoming more prominent in business processes and it seems that automation alongside machine learning and artificial intelligence are the future of Industry 4.0.

In a May 2020 Visual Capitalist Infographic, it shows that 55% of retail, management and logistics professionals are investing in warehouse automation and 47% in predictive analytics. It is expected that most companies are looking at implementing automation in the future but 23% have already acquired new automation technology, yet surprisingly 26% arent looking to implement.

In a Gartner report, it showed that 30% of operational warehouse workers will be supplemented, not replaced, by collaborative robots in 2023. This shows how essential the implementation of technology is and will be in the future, especially now COVID-19 has proven to be a catalyst in technology adoption.

The recent pandemic has thrown many challenges into the procurement and supply chain sector and proved that technology would be essential for successfully implementing social distance and risk mitigation in warehousing and distribution. AI-based automation within warehouses is extensive. The opportunities for implementing such technologies is becoming readily available, from mechanical arms that can sort and handle cargo to intelligent software capable of calculating daily stock rotations.

PayMate Supply Chain Automation Platform

PayMate has launched a new supply chain payment automation platform for large distributors and their suppliers. The platform allows businesses to automate and extend their day payables by using commercial cards. It is a cloud-based platform that has features including multiple payment modes, automating invoicing,e-procure and e-discounting.

It believes businesses require working capital for growth and therefore, PayMates platform simplifies the process and makes it easy to access capital, offering over 325mn in credit extended to SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises).
