Harvard Scientists Claim to Reverse Mouse Aging at Cellular Level

By reversing molecular changes that happen naturally with age, a team of scientists restored vision to blind mice that they made more genetically youthful.

A team of scientists has restored the eyesight of elderly mice by effectively reversing the process of aging at a molecular level.

The cohort of Harvard Medical School researchers removed thousands of chemical markers that accumulate over time from the mice’s DNA, essentially resetting their cells to a younger state. Shortly thereafter, mice with age-related vision loss or nerve damage in their retinas regained their ability to see, Nature reports.

Though there’s not yet any indication that the same technique will work on people, it’s a striking hint that genetic trickery can turn back the clock on at least some consequences of natural biological aging.

They don’t quite understand what it is about cellular mechanics that gives these cells the ability to preserve a more youthful state. But the study, published Wednesday in the academic journal Nature, appears to demonstrate that it’s possible to “reverse” aging in at least some limited domains.

Specifically, the team exploited and undid specific epigenetic changes — alterations to the mice’s gene expression rather than the genes themselves — that occurred over time.

“We set out with a question: if epigenetic changes are a driver of ageing, can you reset the epigenome?” study coauthor and Harvard Medical School geneticist David Sinclair said to Nature. “Can you reverse the clock?”

Most shocking is that the mice who lost eyesight due to nerve damage were able to sprout new nerves after the treatment — something mammals typically lose the ability to do very early in life.

“It was like a jellyfish growing out through the injury site,” study coauthor Yuancheng Lu told Nature. “It was breathtaking.”

Dramatic Drone Video Shows Collapse of Alien-Hunting Observatory

Newly released footage, including several drone shots, shows the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico collapsing in on itself.

The Great Collapse

December 1 was a sad day for astronomers everywhere. The iconic 57-year-old Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico met its final demise when the 900-ton platform suspended above the 1,000-foot-wide dish antenna came crashing down — an accident caused by failing cables that were already stretched to their limits by previous damage.

Now, newly released footage shows the dramatic failure, including close-up drone shots of cables slowly unraveling, leading to the platform hurtling down in a cloud of debris.

Stunning video of the moment the Arecibo Observatory telescope platform collapsed and smashed into the dish:

Cable Failure

Two cable failures, one in October and one in November, sealed the fate of the observatory, with engineers initially planning to decommission and deconstruct the aging structure.

The collapse, however, was not planned, despite efforts to introduce some slack into existing cables to keep one of the strained cable support towers upright.

“After the November 6th cable failure, the [remaining] cables could have failed at any time,” Ralph Gaume, director of the National Science Foundation’s Division of Astronomical Sciences told reporters at a briefing this morning, as quoted by Engadget. “We were unable to predict when it would happen, [but] we knew it would happen.”

There is still a fleeting chance of rebuilding the structure, and the NSF has yet to rule out such a possibility. But it will be a hard sell, especially as it involves asking Congress for funding.

China Claims Quantum Supremacy

A team of researchers from University of Science and Technology of China have just claimed quantum supremacy using a photon-based quantum computer.

Quantum Supremacy 2.0

A team of researchers from University of Science and Technology of China have just claimed quantum supremacy, Wired reports — meaning their quantum computer completed a task that would take a conventional computer tens of thousands of years.

Google became the first to claim quantum supremacy in October 2019 with its Sycamore quantum computer completing a random number generation-related calculation in just 200 seconds — a task that would have taken the world’s most powerful supercomputer 10,000 years, according to the tech giant.

Crunching Numbers Using Light

Now, as detailed in its paper published in the journal Science, the Chinese team says its system, called Jiuzhang, completed a task in three minutes that would’ve taken a powerful supercomputer two billion years, according to Wired.

But there are some striking differences between the two quantum systems. Google’s Sycamore processor uses quantum circuits that include superconducting metals that need to be cryogenically supercooled to extremely low temperatures, fractions of a degree above absolute zero.

Limited Flexibility

The Chinese team’s processor instead manipulates individual photons and doesn’t require supercooling. That introduces limitations: its task was baked into its very circuitry, meaning that it was designed from the ground up to make this particular calculation.

Quantum computing is still very much in its infancy — engineers have yet to even devise a practical use. They are also infamously unstable and fragile.

Still, the fact that they’re starting to grapple with problems beyond the capabilities of conventional computers — and with radically different architectures — is promising.

Google Ousts Top AI Ethicist

On Wednesday, Google fired a prominent AI ethicist at the company who had spoken out about diversity and censorship within the company.

Censorship Allegations

One of Google’s top AI ethicists says she’s out at the company — in part, she says, because the tech giant was censoring her research.

OneZero reports that Timnit Gebru, who had been the technical co-lead of Google’s Ethical Artificial Intelligence Team, says her employment was abruptly cut off — along with her access to her company email address — after a tense email exchange.

Gebru is known for influential research into racial bias in AI algorithms. Most recently, she’s been working at Google in a research position, exploring ethical implications of AI technologies.

Story So Far

But it now sounds like her experience at the search giant has been fraught. In an email obtained by Casey Newton’s new publication Platformer, Gebru told an internal listserv about a saga in which she had circulated a new research paper coauthored with a number of other Google employees — its precise topic remains unclear, though it appears to have to do with language models — to a large group of research peers.

Then, she wrote in the email, she was surprised when her “manager’s manager” told her that she needed to retract the paper.

According to a second email, also obtained by Platformer and sent by head of Google research Jeff Dean, Gebru then said that she would resign unless a list of conditions were met. In his email, Dean also pushed back against elements of Gebru’s narrative. For instance, he said that she only gave internal Google reviewers one day to read the paper, instead of the customary two weeks.

Gebru’s manager, she said on Twitter, subsequently told her that the company couldn’t meet her conditions — and would have to let her go immediately. Google instantly cut off access to her company email account, Gebru told OneZero.

Several of Gebru’s recent tweets suggest that she’s seeking legal recourse. In one message last Monday — before her termination — she inquired about legal protections for whistleblowers among AI researchers. And on Wednesday, she tweeted that she was looking for legal representation.

First and foremost I need an employment lawyer ASAP.

Obama, Clinton, and Bush Say They’ll All Take COVID-19 Vaccine

Former U.S. Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama agreed to take the COVID-19 vaccine in public to bolster confidence that it's safe.

Three former U.S. Presidents have all volunteered to be vaccinated against COVID-19 on camera in order to bolster confidence in the vaccine.

Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama all agreed to take part, CNN reports, in an attempt to create a bipartisan message encouraging widespread inoculation against the coronavirus.

To many, the idea of encouraging people to vaccinate themselves against the pandemic that’s ravaged much of the world throughout 2020 may seem unnecessary. But a national poll from May found that only 49 percent of Americans planned on getting the vaccine. Back then, the top concern was whether the vaccine would be safe or not, so a public demonstration with three national leaders being injected could actually do a lot of good.

“People like Anthony Fauci, who I know, and I’ve worked with, I trust completely,” Obama said Thursday on SiriusXM’s Urban View. “So, if Anthony Fauci tells me this vaccine is safe, and can vaccinate, you know, immunize you from getting COVID, absolutely, I’m going to take it.”

“I promise you that when it’s been made for people who are less at risk, I will be taking it,” Obama added. “I may end up taking it on TV or having it filmed, just so that people know that I trust this science, and what I don’t trust is getting COVID.”

To Obama’s last point about personal risk, a CDC advisory panel decided on Wednesday that the first doses of the vaccine available in the U.S. ought to go to healthcare workers who are personally at risk of coronavirus exposure. After them, the panel recommended prioritizing senior citizens in assisted living.

Aside from Obama, both George W. Bush’s and Bill Clinton’s representatives confirmed to CNN that they would be get the vaccine in public or on camera — and CNN is awaiting word from President Jimmy Carter as well.

“First, the vaccines need to be deemed safe and administered to the priority populations,” Bush’s chief of staff Freddy Ford told CNN. “Then, President Bush will get in line for his, and will gladly do so on camera.”

China Just Powered Up Its “Artificial Sun” Fusion Reactor

China has successfully powered up its

Artificial Sun

China has successfully powered up its “artificial sun” nuclear fusion reactor for the first time, according to Agence France Presse.

The reactor, which is the country’s largest, could one day generate power without running the risk of a nuclear meltdown — or emitting greenhouse gases — by fusing atoms together rather than breaking them apart.

The technical challenges, though, are steep. The system’s HL-2M Tokamak reactor needs to be heated up to ten times the temperature of the core of the Sun, or about 150 million degrees Celsius, according to the state-run Chinese newspaper People’s Daily  — hence the reactor’s nickname.

Clean Energy

“The development of nuclear fusion energy is not only a way to solve China’s strategic energy needs, but also has great significance for the future sustainable development of China’s energy and national economy,” the People’s Daily wrote, as quoted by AFP.

While the news represents a meaningful step forward, achieving fusion still requires far more energy than the amount that’s actually being generated — not to mention the sky high costs involved in running such a reactor.

Despite the uphill battle, the international community is investing billions in developing fusion reactors that could one day become a feasible source of energy. Engineers recently started construction on the world’s largest reactor, an international collaborative effort between 35 countries called ITER, in southern France.

Researchers Call For Rebuilding Collapsed SETI Observatory

Scientists working at the Arecibo Observatory, right until it collapsed earlier this month, are calling for the massive radio telescope to be rebuilt.

Crushed Dreams

Researchers working at the Arecibo Observatory, which collapsed earlier this month, are calling for the massive radio telescope to be rebuilt, NBC News reports.

On Tuesday morning, the 900-ton platform suspended above the delicate 1,000 foot dish came crashing down following several support cables snapping under the weight in October and November.

A Tragedy

For many in the scientific community, the collapse crushed hopes and dreams as well.

“I was very sad, very disappointed,” fourth year physics student at the University of Puerto Rico Génesis Ferrer told NBC. Ferrer had earned a fellowship from the Puerto Rico NASA Space Consortium to study red dwarf stars using the Arecibo Observatory.

“I worked so hard to finally get accepted to work in the Arecibo Observatory,” Ferrer added. “And now that I got accepted, I can’t work in it.”

“It’s a tragedy because we’re seeing our dreams fading away,” said Kevin Ortiz, another fourth year physics student at the university.

We Can Rebuild

Prior to the collapse, scientist coalitions on the island were collecting signatures to ask the White House to save the aging structure. Now, the same groups are turning to Congress to ask for help.

“With the appropriate funding, we have a viable path towards reconstruction,” Ortiz argued to NBC, adding that the investigations facility and the visitor’s center are still intact.

“The educational impact of the observatory is incalculable, at all levels, from professionals and college students to the high school academy and the elementary schools that visit our center,” he added.

This Is the World’s Biggest Drone

Alabama-based startup Aevum has unveiled a fully autonomous drone designed to release satellite-launching rockets in midair — and its an absolute monster.

Absolute Unit

Alabama-based startup Aevum has unveiled a fully autonomous drone designed to release satellite-launching rockets in midair — and it’s an absolute monster.

The Ravn X Autonomous Launch Vehicle is a mammoth 80-foot aircraft with a wingspan of 60 feet. The 18 feet tall behemoth weighs in at 55,000 pounds, which makes it the world’s largest Unmanned Aircraft by mass, according to The Hill.

The drone takes off and lands like a regular aircraft and requires a runway at least one mile in length. Once it’s airborne, the Ravn X is designed to release a small rocket into orbit.

Rideshare Satellites

The startup has ambitious goals: it claims the aircraft can launch satellites into space every three hours, seven days a week.

“Through our autonomous technologies, Aevum will shorten the lead time of launches from years to months, and when our customers demand it, minutes,” Jay Skylus, founder and CEO of Aevum, said in a statement. “This is necessary to improve lives on Earth. This is necessary to save lives.”

According to the company, the massive vehicle is 70 percent reusable in its current form, but will be up to 95 percent reusable in the near future.

The startup has also already worked with the Space Force to launch the nascent service branch’s first small satellite launch mission.

Elon Musk’s Boring Company Turned Its Vegas Tunnel Into a “Rave”

A video uploaded to the Boring Company's Twitter account shows the entire Las Vegas Convention Center Loop terminal light up in rainbow colors.

Tunnel Rave

Elon Musk’s Boring Company clearly had a lot of fun decorating its Las Vegas tunnel.

A video uploaded to the company’s Twitter shows the entire Las Vegas Convention Center Loop terminal lit up in gaudy RGB lighting, pulsating in waves of rainbow colors like an overpriced trophy gaming PC.

The video also shows off a powerful sound system, pumping out EDM to go with the flashing lights.

It’s a signature move by the Tesla CEO: Musk teased in July that its brand new Gigafactory in Berlin will have “indoor/outdoor rave space” on the factory’s roof.

Get In Loser

As Musk admitted in an October tweet, the company “simplified” original plans to transport passengers via roomy passenger pods inside the tunnels by “a lot.” As it stands, the Convention Center loop will carry five passengers at a time through the tunnel inside largely unmodified Tesla vehicles.

The jury is still out on how many passengers can be transported at a given time — and how those numbers compare to a conventional train system.

The Boring Company has also received approval to expand the Loop, as Electrek reported last month, with the company eyeing connecting the loop to the city’s Ars District as well.

US Official Claims China Is Testing Biologically Enhanced Supersoldiers

John Ratcliffe, the U.S. national intelligence cirector, wrote in an op-ed that China experimented on military members to try and create supersoldiers.

Rebuild Him

John Ratcliffe, the U.S. director of national intelligence, says that China is using CRISPR technology to try and gene-hack members of the military into supersoldiers.

It’s a provocative claim, and just one of many topics Ratcliffe breezed through in a Wall Street Journal op-ed he penned to argue that China is the greatest threat to the U.S. and the world. It’s certainly possible that human experimentation happened — the Chinese government likely supported the “CRISPR Baby” debacle from 2018, or at least tolerated it — but NBC reports that the ability to use CRISPR to augment human abilities likely still eludes even top labs.

Arms Race

Ratcliffe wrote that he found the alleged supersoldier CRISPR research reprehensible.

“U.S. intelligence shows that China has even conducted human testing on members of the People’s Liberation Army in hope of developing soldiers with biologically enhanced capabilities,” Ratcliffe wrote. “There are no ethical boundaries to Beijing’s pursuit of power.”

But neither Ratcliffe nor the CIA — nor the Chinese government — responded to NBC‘s request for details. And the U.S. military has done plenty of supersoldier research of its own — albeit without trying to create superpowers through CRISPR, as far as we know.

Real Threat

Chinese military leaders have said that biotechnology has incredible potential for military applications, NBC reports. But experts in the field are less concerned about CRISPR supersoldiers than they are about CRISPR doing damage when misused — such as in the pursuit of supersoldiers.

“When we start playing around with genetic organisms, there could be unforeseen consequences,” former Navy officer Wilson VornDick told NBC.

Lab-Grown Chicken Sandwich Tastes Like Real Thing, Says Person Who Ate It

An artificial chicken venture called the Chicken seems to have nailed the flavor and texture of a fried chicken sandwich using lab-grown cells.

Lab-To-Table

In Israel, a new half-lab-half-restaurant called the Chicken is the first in the world to offer lab-grown meat to diners.

The restaurant, which gives out cultured chicken burgers for free — the texture of chicken breast is difficult to mimic — seems to have nailed the flavor and texture of the fried chicken sandwich, according to The Guardian correspondent Oliver Holmes, who tested it out. In many ways, the Chicken is more of a product demo than a conventional restaurant venture. But at the same time, it’s an unmistakable sign that sustainable, lab-grown versions of meat are becoming tasty, even if they aren’t yet at a price point for mass consumption.

Cage-Free

The back room of the restaurant is also its lab, so diners can watch as scientists culture the meat that they’re eating.

“This burger takes something between two to three days to grow,” head chef Tomer Halevy, who holds a PhD in genetics, told The Guardian.

The cells are grown in a broth of water, sugar, amino acids, proteins, and vitamins, where cells develop and divide as they do in a growing animal.

“If you harvest half the meat on one day, you will get the same amount the next day,” Halevy added.

Test Run

The Chicken is meant to get people interested and engaged with lab-grown meat. The ultimate goal, according to The Guardian is to distribute the lab-grown chicken to companies that already make and sell patties and nuggets at the grocery store.

If lab-grown meat like Halevy’s takes off, The Guardian reports, it could be great news for the planet — scientists have estimated that cultured meat emits just four percent of the greenhouse gases as traditional meat farming.

China Is Rolling Out an Enormous “Weather Modification” System

China plans to expand its weather modification system to cover 5.5 million square miles. Neighboring India is worried it could become a weapon.

Cloud Cover

This week, the Chinese government announced that it plans to drastically increase its use of technology that artificially changes the weather.

Cloud seeding technology, or systems that can blasts silver molecules into the sky to prompt condensation and cloud formation, has been around for decades, and China makes frequent use of it. But now, CNN reports that China wants to increase the total size of its weather modification test area to 5.5 million square miles by 2025 — a huge increase, and an area larger than that of the entire country of India, which could affect the environment on an epic scale and even potentially spur conflict with nearby countries.

Fog Of War

Most notably, China and India share a hotly-disputed border that they’ve violently clashed over as recently as this year, CNN has previously reported. India’s agriculture relies on a monsoon season that’s already grown unpredictable due to climate change, prompting experts in the country to worry that China may use its ability to control rain and snowfall as a weapon.

“Lack of proper coordination of weather modification activity (could) lead to charges of ‘rain stealing’ between neighboring regions,” National Taiwan University researchers conclude in a 2017 paper published in Geoforum.

Global Tampering

In the past, China has used its weather modification tech to seed clouds well in advance of major events like the 2008 Olympics and political meetings so the events themselves happen under clear skies, CNN reports.

But this planned expansion of the system means that other countries may be subject to its meteorological whims — seeding international conflict in addition to clouds.

The Sharpest-Ever Image of a Sunspot Looks Like a Portal to Hell

The Inouye Solar Telescope, the largest solar observatory in the world, just released the first-ever image of a sunspot.

The US National Science Foundation’s Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope, the largest solar observatory in the world, just released its first-ever image of a sunspot.

The image, taken in January 2020, is the sharpest image of a sunspot in history — and it looks absolutely terrifying.

“The sunspot image achieves a spatial resolution about 2.5 times higher than ever previously achieved, showing magnetic structures as small as 20 kilometers on the surface of the sun,” associate director at NSF’s National Solar Observatory Thomas Rimmele, lead author of the corresponding paper published in the journal Solar Physics, said in a statement.

A sunspot is a dark area on the Sun’s surface. Scientists suspected that they’re caused by magnetic field flux which cause surrounding areas to cool temporarily.

Their size can be extraordinary. The new Inouye image, for instance, is 10,000 miles across — large enough to fit the entire Earth comfortably inside it.

The image shows hot and cool gas emanating from the dark center while hot gases bubble up from below the surface. Despite being relatively cool, the dark areas in the center still measure above a toasty 7,500 degrees Fahrenheit.

Roughly every 11 Earth years, the Sun starts a new cycle of solar activity. The image represents one of the first sunspots of a solar cycle that began in December 2019.

Sunspots are similar to solar flares and coronal mass ejections, which are massive bursts of plasma and magnetic fields from the Sun’s corona, the outer part of its atmosphere.

These massive outbursts can be so violent, their effects on space weather can be felt all the way back on Earth, where they wreak havoc on power grids, GPS satellites, and even air travel.

In other words, studying these phenomena could help us refine our tools and make them more resistant to freak events in space weather.

New Device Sends Images Directly Into Monkeys’ Brains

Thanks to an array of electrodes implanted in their brains, two monkeys were able to

Thanks to an array of electrodes implanted in their brains, two monkeys were able to “see” and recognize individual letter shapes — without ever having to use their eyes, as New Scientist reports.

The researchers behind the effort claim it’s the highest resolution of “vision” ever achieved without taking advantage of the retina.

Previous efforts have attempted to restore sight by placing implants directly in the retina of an eye — an impressive technique, but one that won’t work for those with damaged optic nerves.

To restore vision for a pair of monkeys, a team led by Pieter Roelfsema at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience created a brain implant made up of needle-like electrodes just 1.5 millimeters in length, as detailed in a paper published in the journal Science today.

These electrodes are then attached to the visual cortex — instead of the retina — to allow the monkeys to “see” a pattern of dots. In trials, the team implanted arrays in two macaques.

“The number of electrodes that we have implanted in the visual cortex, and the number of artificial pixels that we can generate to produce high-resolution artificial images, is unprecedented,” Roelfsema said in a statement.

Having previously been trained to perform a simple behavioral task corresponding to one of 16 letter shapes made up of individual dots, the macaques ended up responding to each letter correctly when the arrays sent them into the visual cortex.

“Our implant interfaces directly with the brain, bypassing prior stages of visual processing via the eye or the optic nerve,” Xing Chen, postdoctoral researcher and team member, explained in the statement. “Hence, in the future, such technology could be used for the restoration of low vision in blind people who have suffered injury or degeneration of the retina, eye, or optic nerve, but whose visual cortex remains intact.”

While the arrays feature an impressive number of individual dots or pixels, the resulting “vision” is still a far cry from what your eyes can produce — that is, if it were to ever be implanted in a human brain. That’s because human eyes can pick up millions of individual pixels, instead of only about a thousand.

North Korea: The horrid way they’re handling the coronavirus outbreak – Film Daily

North Korea isnt exactly known as the paragon of rationalism. While its possible that the countrys usual state of closed borders has potentially helped to prevent the coronavirus from spreading too rapidly within the country, experts believe there have been cases of COVID-19 though North Korea denies this wholeheartedly.

Even if the country has somehow managed to scrape through without any cases, that doesnt mean North Korea is completely unaffected by the outbreak of a worldwide pandemic. In fact, its being reported that Kim Jong Un is displaying excessive anger over the entire situation.

Heres whats being said about how North Korea is handling the coronavirus outbreak.

Recently there were two executions in North Korea. One man was a money changer from Pyongyang, apparently, he was blamed for the falling exchange rate, which was actually a result of coronaviruss effect on the economy.

The second man executed was a high level government official who is said to have been caught violating the restrictions against goods from outside the country. The rules were put into place as anti-virus measures as North Korea continues to appear extremely fearful of the virus.

Its also being said that Kim Jong Un has made it so that nobody can go fishing or take part in salt production in the ocean. This is reportedly due to a fear of the seawater either being infected or becoming infected with COVID-19. (There is currently no evidence that COVID-19 can spread through water, whether fresh or salty.)

Many of Kim Jong Uns policies being implemented in regard to the coronavirus are being referred to as irrational.

North Koreas biggest trade partner is China, however since China is where the coronavirus outbreak originated North Korea has staunchly shut its borders to China since January with very minimal exceptions. Business Insider is reporting that so far North Koreas trade with China has dropped 73% as of September.

In fact, its also being reported that North Korea is refusing a delivery of approximately 110,000 tons of rice from China over fears that the coronavirus could enter the country with the shipment. The shipment is currently stuck waiting in the port of Dalian. Though North Korea has reportedly accepted shipments of COVID tests and PPE from China and Russia during 2020.

Obviously, just like most other countries in the world, North Korea has also put a halt on tourism.

There are also reports of lockdowns occurring inside North Korea with the capital of Pyongyang and the northern province of Jagang as the most notable shutdowns currently taking place.

The implementation of lockdowns would seemingly imply the presence of positive COVID-19 tests, though with the countrys lack of transparency this can only be speculated upon. Again, however, experts believe it is highly unlikely North Korea hasnt had any cases, especially after implementing thousands of tests.

North Korea seems eager to get their hands on a vaccine. South Koreas intelligence service has also come forward saying that North Korea had attempted to hack a South Korean drug making company that is currently in the middle of working on a coronavirus vaccine. The attempt was unsuccessful, however, as they were caught.

U.S. analysts stepped forward on Tuesday to say that Kim Jong Un and his family were given an experimental COVID-19 vaccine from China. Theyre saying this likely happened sometime within the last two to three weeks. At the moment nobody knows which Chinese company provided the shots or if theyve even been tested for safety.

There are currently three different Chinese companies known to be working on a vaccine and not one of them have publicly launched phase three trials.

Eton row is a damning symbol of conservatism’s thrashing in the culture war – Telegraph.co.uk

You couldnt find a more damning symbol of the reality that the Right has lost the argument: a master at that bastion of male debating prowess, Eton, derided and pitied as a free speech martyr. The story of Will Knowland dismissed for refusing to take down a YouTube video in which he challenges radical feminism has it all. The woke hauteur of the headmaster, Trendy Hendy, has us salivating with outrage. The revelation that the factual difference between men and women is now deemed controversial opinion chills us to the bones.

Still, the tale hits on something else disturbing. The centre-Right has become incapable of winning intellectual disputes. The Mr Knowlands of this world, of reasonable if not flawless intelligence, are elbowed out of respectable society as swivel-eyed loons. Meanwhile, proponents of Marxapocalyptic pap have gone mainstream as reasoned centrists. Our only defence against this double standard seems to be pieties about the need to defend the maiden of free speech.

This with the fidgety disclaimer that we might not always agree with her dodgier claims for example, Mr Knowlands suggestion that men are more vulnerable than women to rape but we defend her inalienable right to make them. The uneasy truth is that, at some point, the Right stopped being a challenge to the Left and faded into a force worthy only of its contempt.

How did the latter pull it off? By ensuring that arguments are evaluated not by their veracity, but their implications. In the Lefts long march through the institutions over the past 70 years, academic inquiry has become drastically utilitarian. The reputable scholar has morphed from objective interrogator of evidence into an activist devoted to dismantling patriarchal capitalism. Free speech with its potential to challenge the moral supremacy of this new orthodoxy has become undesirable. Society cannot be indiscriminate in its tolerance of speech, where freedom and happiness themselves are at stake, Herbert Marcuse railed. The modern, educated mind, in all its pompous rationalism, nodded sagely.

And so the Will Knowlands are vilified not because their views are wrong but because they are considered to be revolting. This is the secret to the Lefts success. Its why academics dont dare point out the holes in the concept of patriarchy. Its why scientists who undermine pro-lockdown modelling have been rejected by leading journals on the basis that their maths is dangerous rather than wrong. It is not enough to say that our opponents views are technically incorrect, when their response is that our propositions are immoral. Perhaps then, we need to beat the Left at their own game. We need to prove that their views are harmful.

Take radical feminism. If we are not too careful, we will soon live in a world where manly rushes of adrenalin are considered as biologically shameful as menstruating. Where boys are inculcated to believe that they are despicable and expendable. More will surely then behave as if they are; society will have more psychopaths and absent fathers. The radical feminists will welcome the latter. They wish to smash the nuclear family as the foundation stone of patriarchy. But the most dangerous tenet of radical feminism is that man is a destructive force that will annihilate the world unless his aggressive, competitive spirit can be deprogrammed.

By the way, this apocalyptic view of history has hung like a millstone around the neck of Western thinking since we stole it from the Zoroastrian Manichaeans. When Extinction Rebellion prophesises lakes of fire lit by mans abominations, they preach from the Book of Revelation. It is the only section of the Bible that has survived the proto-Marxist secular era, passed down through Engels, who lusted over it with a passion.

Yet some experts say that what really makes men and women human is not wanton destructiveness. It is our unique talent for, and cognitive pleasure derived from, problem-solving from making stone-age tools and finishing crosswords to tackling climate change to inventing vaccines. Biological quirks like our astonishingly flexible hands evolved from primates predispose us to adapt to obstacles. As the world becomes more complex, we should thus be trying to grasp the varied strengths and weaknesses of the sexes for solving supermassive crises not delighting in the self-fulfilling prophesy of our own extinction and lambasting maleness.

Perhaps we women are not pulling our weight in mathematics and science because, socially conditioned to feign perfection, and biologically wired to protect rather than explore, we live in terror of failure. Time to move out of our comfort zone of softer subjects, then, where there isnt a wrong answer. And perhaps the most dangerous male flaw in this era of complex risk is not aggression but a tendency to tunnel vision bound up partly in mans hunting instinct and partly in the archetype of the decisive male leader. Maybe society suffers not from toxic masculinity but a toxic modernity that combines the worst flaws in the sexes: excessive risk aversion and one-dimensional thinking.

Will Knowland is right that the radical feminists, in all their prejudice and their pessimism, have got it wrong. But his attempt at a factual takedown does not get at just how wrong they are. Its not simply the truth but our very survival that we are arguing for.

Existentialism and Education – Greater Kashmir

Existentialism is a sort of reaction to traditional philosophy like Idealism, Rationalism, Pragmatism, and Absolutism etc. Existentialism is therefore more specifically represented as a kind of philosophical movement. The chief pioneers being Soren Kirkegaard, Jean Paul Satre, Martin Heidegger, Nietzsche etc. While traditional philosophical thoughts speculated about essence of matter and human essence rather than existence. Existentialism emphasized on human existence rather than essence. In this school of thought existence is a central theme and essence , rather nature, is secondary. While traditional system of thought was more concerned with the nature of things, it skipped the existence of humans. The human as an individual was lost in the crowd, complex societies, and developed towns. His choice of desires and will are defined by society and authorities, while his inner freedom and choice is taken for granted. His freedom of thought is curtailed and set inside the borders of authority. The individual problems are not given any prominence. It is in this backdrop that the loss of individual choice and freedom are given prominence by existentialists. According to existentialists man should define his choice and will, he must not cry inwardly for curtailing of his choices and arrest of freedom by authority which is meaningless and absurd. Man, according to existentialists should struggle and fight with his own self to accomplish his goals which must not get eliminated by any third party. Because, as per this thought man is essentially alone, while the web of relations cannot dictate and define his choices. Man has to try to reform into more humane, thus an individual has to struggle to understand his own self, to realize his ownself, and move to self actualization. Thus man has to progress and evolve into humane by his own efforts and struggle.

While education is reformation of human resource into more humane, in other words to educate is to make all round development; to bring out all intellectual capacities lying dormant by giving a rich and up to mark environment. The modern education system doesnt flourish creativity, rather gives importance to rote learning. This kind of education, which controls creativity of an individual, is dangerous and causes more harm than good as per existentialism. The flourishing of creative ideas in an individual is sine qua non of existentialism. Existentialism focuses on individual capacities, paving way to diverse thinking and concepts leading to creative ideas, which are fruitful to individual self and collective good. But contemporary education system traversing the path from formal to informal is considered vague, and void. Individual choices and will of students are considered absurd and overlooked, rather are designed by single system and decided by one party be parent, or teacher or any other party. Individual choice and will take backseat, while collective decisions take lead and define role and choice of individual, thus leading to conflicts and chaos ranging from self, to society and culminating in violence, be it suicide or murder of self. In contemporary societies students are forced to learn a set stream by parents to get a job, which is done in absence of learners choice, thus triggering chaos. Likewise individual choice is not taken into consideration at schools, colleges, and universities; choice needs to be nurtured by giving rich environment.

Thus teachers need to know, understand, and communicate with a learner to know his choice, and limits of freedom and will. After that he should provide guidance and take him to actuality from his potentiality, this being the significant aim of existential philosophical thought. Also, in current times education has been commercialized by private tuitions and schools, which also focus on accumulation of facts to achieve a single defined goal. Thus understanding the individual traits and capacities of learner need to be prioritized in educational system to cherish the real aims of education which is the focal point of Existentialists.

Mesothelioma Causes, Symptoms, Treatment & Prognosis

Mesothelioma facts

What is mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer (malignancy) that most frequently arises from the cells lining the sacs of the chest (the pleura) or the abdomen (the peritoneum). Pleural mesothelioma is the most common form, often becoming apparent with symptoms in the chest area such as chest pain, cough, and/or shortness of breath. Shortness of breath often occurs due to a large pleural effusion (fluid in the thoracic cavity). Peritoneal mesothelioma is much less common. This can affect the organs in the abdomen, and its symptoms are related to this area of the body, that is, abdominal swelling, nausea, vomiting, and bowel obstruction. The rarest form of mesothelioma is pericardial mesothelioma, which involves the sac surrounding the heart.

There are two major cell types of mesothelioma, epithelial and sarcomatoid. Sometimes both of these cell types can be present, also referred to as biphasic. The sarcomatoid type is rarer and occurs in only about 15% of cases; it portends a poorer prognosis. In very rare cases, mesothelioma can originate from benign, non-malignant cells. Surgery cures this so-called benign mesothelioma.

There are many causes of chest pain. A serious form of chest pain is angina, which is a symptom of heart disease and results from inadequate oxygen supply to the heart muscle. Angina can be caused by coronary artery disease or spasm of the coronary arteries. Chest pain can also be due to a heart attack (coronary occlusion), aortic aneurysm dissection, myocarditis, esophageal spasm, esophagitis, rib injury or disease, anxiety, and other important diseases. Do not try to ignore chest pain and "work (or play) through it." Chest pain is a warning to seek medical attention.

What are mesothelioma symptoms?

Most people present with complaints of shortness of breath. They also can have complaints of chest pain and cough. Patients may also be asymptomatic, with the disease discovered by physical exam or an abnormal chest X-ray.

As the disease progresses, shortness of breath increases, and weight loss, decreased appetite, and night sweats can develop. Local invasion by the tumor can result in changing of voice, loss of function of the diaphragm, and symptoms specific to the area and involvement of adjacent structures.

What causes mesothelioma?

Most people with malignant mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they breathed asbestos. Usually, this involves men over 40 years of age. Others have been exposed to asbestos in a household environment, often without knowing it. The number of new cases of mesothelioma has been relatively stable since 1983, the same time that the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) instituted restrictions on asbestos. In Europe, the number of new cases of mesothelioma continues to rise.

How much asbestos exposure does it take to get mesothelioma?

An exposure of as little as one or two months can result in mesothelioma 30 or 40 years later and in some cases, as much as 70 years later.

How long does it take after asbestos exposure for mesothelioma to show up?

People exposed in the 1940s, '50s, '60s, and '70s are now being diagnosed with mesothelioma because of the long latency period of asbestos disease.

How do health care professionals diagnose mesothelioma?

Pathological examination from a biopsy diagnoses mesothelioma. A health care professional removes tissue. Then a pathologist places it under a microscope and makes a definitive diagnosis and issues a pathology report. This is the end of a process that usually begins with symptoms that send most people to the doctor: a fluid buildup around the lungs (pleural effusions), shortness of breath, pain in the chest, or pain or swelling in the abdomen. The doctor may order an X-ray or CT scan of the chest or abdomen. If further examination is warranted, the following tests may be done:

What is the prognosis for mesothelioma?

Like most cancers, the prognosis for this disease often depends on how early it is diagnosed and how aggressively it is treated. Unfortunately, oftentimes health care professionals find mesothelioma at a stage in which a cure is unobtainable. Many will succumb to the disease within one year of diagnosis.

Treatment options are determined by the stage of mesothelioma (the extent to which the tumor has spread in the body). There are three staging systems currently in use, and each one measures somewhat different variables.

The oldest staging system and the one most often used is the Butchart system, based mainly on the extent of primary tumor mass and divides mesotheliomas into four stages.

The more recent TNM system considers variables of tumor in mass and spread, lymph node involvement, and metastasis.

TNM system: variables of T (tumor), N (lymph nodes), and M (metastasis)

The Brigham system is the latest system and stages mesothelioma according to resectability (the ability to remove the tumor surgically) and lymph node involvement.

What is the treatment for mesothelioma?

There are three traditional kinds of treatment for patients with malignant mesothelioma. Often physicians combine two or more of these in the course of treatment:

Surgery: There are several types of surgery used in treating mesothelioma.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may come from a machine outside the body (external radiation therapy) or from putting materials that produce radiation (radioisotopes) through thin plastic tubes in the area where the cancer cells are (internal radiation therapy).

If fluid has collected in the chest or abdomen, your doctor may drain the fluid out of your body by putting in a needle into the chest or abdomen and using gentle suction to remove the fluid. If a doctor removes fluid from the chest, this is called thoracentesis. If a physician removes fluid from the abdomen, this is called paracentesis. Your doctor may also put drugs through a tube into the chest to prevent more fluid from accumulating.

Health care professionals administer adjuvant radiation in a manner to avoid exposure of the opposite lung to radiation and its potential side effects.

Chemotherapy is the use of drugs to kill cancer cells. Health care professionals administer chemotherapy by pill, or it may be put into the body by a needle in the vein or muscle. Often, a platinum-based chemotherapy (cisplatin or carboplatin) drug is given along with a second agent, pemetrexed. The side effects can be quite toxic, therefore they are used in people who are physically well enough to tolerate these side effects.

Chemotherapeutic agents can be administered either systemically (through the bloodstream) or intrapleurally (in the pleural cavity). When it is administered intrapleurally, the treatment is localized at the site of the tumor. These drugs are generally very toxic and you should discuss their use very carefully with your physician.

Is there any promising research or are there promising drugs for mesothelioma?

Medical researchers are testing new approaches to treat malignant mesothelioma. They often combine traditional treatments or include something entirely new. They include:

Research is being conducted at various cancer centers all over the United States.

A recent study involving L-NDDP produced two cases of remission in mesothelioma patients. Another study found that a drug known as lovastatin might hold promise for mesothelioma patients.

Study Shows Benefits of Focal Radiation Therapy in Mesothelioma Treatment – Mesothelioma.net Blog

Published on November 30, 2020

Malignant mesothelioma is known for many things, including the fact that it is notably resistant to traditional cancer treatments. Researchers are constantly working to find effective means of slowing the asbestos-related cancers spread and delaying the need for aggressive surgeries or toxic systemic therapies. A new study published in the journalLung Cancerindicates that the use of high-dose focal radiotherapy may be an essential tool in this goal, offering a safe option for patients affected by the terminal disease.

The mesothelioma study was conducted by researchers from a variety of Italian research facilities and examined the use of high-dose focal radiotherapy, which delivers radiation from multiple directions in a very targeted way to address mesothelioma tumors that have developed in sites distant from the original tumor.

The patients involved in the study all had what is termed oligo-progressive malignant pleural mesothelioma, which means that they were not eligible for surgery and that their disease had progressed to three or fewer sites. All patients had already been treated with at least one line of chemotherapy, and then were treated with either stereotactic body radiotherapy or hypo-fractionated radiotherapy.

Of 37 mesothelioma patients treated with the radiotherapy between April 2006 and March 2019, local control of the diseases spread was 84% at 6 months following treatment and 76% at one year following treatment. Patients who had received one line of systemic therapy prior to the use of radiotherapy realized a longer period of time before progression than was true of those that had required multiple courses of chemotherapy.

For those diagnosed with malignant mesothelioma, finding ways to extend life and improve quality of life is a top priority, and these study results provide physicians with invaluable information on how to do so.
