Opinion | August Vollmer ‘Abolished’ the Police in 1905 – The New York Times

Its striking that some of todays advocates for abolishing or defunding the police echo Mr. Vollmers views. Mariame Kaba, an anti-criminalization activist and grass-roots organizer, recently argued that one way to abolish the police would be to redirect the billions that now go to police departments toward providing health care, housing, education and good jobs. She proposed that trained community care workers could do mental-health checks if someone needs help.

Mr. Vollmers 1936 textbook makes a similar suggestion, though more as an approach to reducing crime than Ms. Kabas goal of creating a cooperative society in which police are obsolete. Mr. Vollmer asserted that school, welfare, health, and recreation were more likely to prevent crime than jails. In a movement which aims at the reduction of crime, he wrote, there simply is no place for slums, malnutrition, physical want or disease. He added that victimless crimes like drug use and sex work should be handled by nonpolice agencies, just as mental health crises should be.

And like todays advocates for criminal justice reform, Mr. Vollmer wanted police officers to be accountable, hence his emphasis on keeping careful records of all arrests and investigations. Almost single-handedly, he ushered in the age of data analysis in police work. There is a direct line between his strategies in the 1920s and the use of body cams today.

There is also a direct line between his work and racial profiling. Like many white men of his day, Mr. Vollmer was infatuated with scientific racism, or the constellation of ideas that suggest there is a biological basis for racial hierarchies. In a section of his proposed police training curriculum, he listed eugenics, the origin of races and race degeneration as part of a section on criminological anthropology and heredity. Despite hiring Berkeleys first Black police officer the renowned Walter Gordon, who later was the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands Mr. Vollmer suggested in some of his writings that Black people were predisposed to crime. Khalil Gibran Muhammads book The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime and the Making of Modern Urban America explores how the violent injustices of Jim Crow policing were bolstered by ideas like the ones Mr. Vollmer promoted.

A veteran of the Philippine-American War, Mr. Vollmer based the Berkeley Police Departments centralized command structure on what he had experienced in the military. And in 1906 he established mobile bicycle patrols (yes, he was an early champion of bicycle cops, too), based on tactics he learned while crushing resistance fighters outside Manila.

In the last century, Mr. Vollmers emphasis on mandating education and a professionalized police force has largely fallen by the wayside. While some police departments set minimum college education levels for their officers, many dont, despite research indicating that officers who have graduated from college are almost 40 percent less likely to use any form of force. His notion of a liberal college education for police was supplanted by models that are closer to technical training programs, according to the criminal justice professor Lawrence W. Sherman. Instead of serving as a resource for changing the role of the police, Mr. Sherman wrote in the late 1970s, college programs for police officers have been subverted to help maintain the status quo in policing.

While some of this shift had to do with the growing conservatism of police departments, it was also rooted in a theory of community policing. Critics pointed out that working-class people couldnt always afford to attend universities. If police departments wanted to hire officers who could patrol their own low-income neighborhoods, the argument went, it was elitist to demand four-year degrees.

Only One Third of US Adults Would Take an Immortality Pill – Futurism

A new survey of roughly 900 American adults says that actually no, people dont want to live forever.

When asked whether theyd like to take a pill that would allow them to live forever at their current age, only about 33 percent of survey respondents said yes, according to research published in the Journal of Aging Studies. Another 42 percent said no, while the remaining 25 percent wasnt sure.

The low number offers a surprising departure from the emphasis on dubious longevity research and treatments among tech leaders in Silicon Valley. If this survey is to believed, it seems that the average person may be more accepting of their mortality than those peddling young blood transfusions or other questionable anti-aging treatments.

But part of the issue, PsychNewsDaily notes, is that the survey respondents were broken down about evenly into three age groups: young adults between the ages of 18 and 29, senior citizens with an average age of 72, and an even older cohort with an average age of 88. While the three groups answered almost exactly the same way, they did have different thoughts on which age theyd like to be frozen at, given the choice.

Both older cohorts suggested that if they were to be frozen at a certain age, theyd want it to be decades younger than their current age, a trend that more aligns with similar research that found a more positive response to living longer after clarifying that respondents would be healthy the entire time. In this case, it seems the notion of being stuck in the body of an 88-year-old for all of eternity didnt come across as the most tantalizing scenario.

The Great Philosophers: Pythagoras was a mystic who believed in immortality – The Independent

It is well known that Pythagoras supposedly came up with the theorem that allows us to calculate the length of the hypotenuse of a right-angled triangle from the length of its sides. It is less well-known that he was a mystic who founded a religion that emphasised a belief in immortality and the transmigration of souls (a kind of reincarnation, in which the soul enters an already existing body rather than a newborn).

Pythagorass ideas about the triangle were only a small part of the contribution he made to the history of mathematics. His work on the mathematical foundations of music is probably the most significant. Legend has it that he first came to an understanding of the link between music and maths while observing a blacksmith at work. He noticed that there was a relationship between the size and weight of the blacksmith's hammer and the pitch of the note that was produced as it struck the anvil. It appeared that music was governed by maths.

For Pythagoras and his followers, this was indicative of the ultimate nature of reality: behind the play of appearances, they believed, all things are number. Precisely what this means, however, isn't entirely clear, since history has not been kind in leaving us clues to Pythagorass precise thinking. All that we know of him comes from fragments, apparently written by his disciples.

From Iceland Man In The Age Of Immortality: Viktor Orri rnason Composes A Future With Eternal Life – Reykjavk Grapevine

The Epic of Gilgamesh, written around 2100 BCE and one of the earliest examples of human literature, tells the tale of a thwarted search for immortality. In it, the raucous King Gilgamesh travels to the end of the world in order to solve the only problem he in his kingliness is powerless againstdeath. There, he meets a brewess named Siduri, who urges Gilgamesh to be happy with what he has, telling the desperate man:

When the gods created mankind,Death they dispensed to mankind,Life they kept for themselves.

Thousands of years later, in 23 BC, Horace pens Odes, whose 11th poem in the first book ends with the infamous phrase: carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero or Seize the day, put very little trust in tomorrow. At the same time, Epicureanism has its revival in Rome, whose inhabitants find wisdom and guidance in the Greeks philosophers primal teneta fearless embrace of death and celebration of lifes simple pleasures.

Fast forward almost 2000 years and Oscar Wilde pens The Picture of Dorian Grey. Add another hundred years and physicist Max Tegmark introduces the thought experiment of Quantum Immortality. Flash to 2005, when noted futurist Ray Kurzweil, the Director of Engineering at Google, gives a concrete date for singularity: 2045.

Now, just 24 years before Kurzweils predictions come to pass, neo-classical composer Viktor Orri rnason throws his own hat into the ring with Eilfurhis debut album which continues the thousands of years of exploration of mankinds inevitable future sans death.

The idea really grabbed me that it is possiblethat not too far in the future we will have such technical advances that we may be able to regenerate ourselves and choose to live as long as we want, Viktor explains. My thoughts then became: What does that mean for us as human beings? What is the purpose of life? How can we even enjoy it?

In Viktors view, it was mans own knowledge of their mortality that drove so much of their happiness. Today, people imagine themselves living 60-90 years and this gives you a timeline to engage with life with the knowledge that you will die, he says. If that is gone suddenly, its going to be difficult to stay optimistic and easier to just be bored and depressed.

To showcase this progression, Viktors nine-track album bases itself around three songs, entitled Var, Er and Var-Er.

The whole album is a display of a distorted reality, of time being irrelevant.

Var-Erthe last song on the album and finale of Viktors adventure into the futurebegins with a smooth horn progression peppered with spurts of twinkling trills. Its a bit Rites of Springalbeit more relaxeduntil a droning mens choir appears, pulling the listener into the depths of meditation. Slow and intense on the surface, the song is underscored at all times by a visceral sense of restlessness, of searching, or unease. Apparently living forever doesnt sound particularly upbeat.

The goal was to create a space where you would feel lost, Viktor explains. To create a sense that you could lose yourself in time.

And to do this, Viktor actually did lose himself in time. When composing each track, Viktor used tape-based time manipulation to warp discordant sounds together.

[This] was very important to me in the process of making this music, he continues. These are tools that allow me to mix together things that were originally recorded in different tempos or keys, to slow them down or speed them up to get them to play together. The whole album is a display of a distorted reality, of time being irrelevant.

But the question remains, were these medical advances available, would Viktor embrace them? Will he be uploading his brain in 2045?

I would do it, but Id want to stay optimistic, he laughs. Everyone Ive talked to, though, are frightened by this. So yes, I would definitely do it, but it saddens me to know that many of my friends and family would not want to.

As a whole though, Viktors album urges us to seize the day, regardless of our immortality status or not.

My question was, in the end, what do we need to do to enjoy life? And it became about the simple things in life, Viktor concludes. We need to learn to appreciate the moment. Allow yourself to be a child and look up at the sky and enjoy how wonderful it is. Enjoy every breath you take.

Eilfur by Viktor Orri rnason will be released on June 18th, 2021. Check him out on his website.

Aloe there: Getting up close with the plant of immortality – Daily Maverick

Image: Val Van Sittert / Unsplash

In Athol Fugards 1978 play, A Lesson From Aloes, the aloe is used allegorically as a tool for trying to establish a sense of place in a country with so much racial conflict.

In isiXhosa, Aloe ferox is named Ikhala. It is beautiful, strong enough to survive harsh, dry conditions and has well-known medicinal properties. In the Eastern Cape, it features as a symbol on car number plates, and it also appears on the medal for the Order of Mendi a national honour for bravery.

The central image is sealed above by a green emerald which is surrounded on three sides by renditions of the bitter aloe, a hardy indigenous South African plant used in traditional medicine. The three bitter aloes represent resilience and survival and also serve as symbolic directional pointers, showing the way when rendering assistance to those in need during natural disasters, says the governments website.

Aloes have featured in San paintings dating from 5,000 to 2,000 years ago, and medicinal use of the plant is recorded in Egypt from as far back as 3000 BC as well as being referenced in the Bible.

Such is the importance of the Aloe genus in the South African landscape and in the world.

The aloe is a member of the Asphodelaceae family and is sometimes referred to as the plant of immortality as it can live and bloom without soil. Their flowering time is predominantly from May to August, and their height varies from a few centimetres to 4m.

Originating from southern and eastern Africa, Madagascar and the Arabian Peninsula, there are more than 550 naturally occurring species in the world.

Planting aloes in your garden

Aloes like a tropical climate with no frost and can withstand high temperatures and limited water. Their preferred domain is rocky outcrops, where you can marvel at the show of them marching across the countryside like Triffids the fictional plant imagined by British sci-fi author John Wyndham in his 1951 novel.

Winter trips through the Eastern Cape and en route to the Lowveld are well rewarded with magnificent shows of flowering aloes. Not only are they loved for their vivid colours, statuesque forms and hardiness, but they are often the main source of food for some birds during winter. Sunbirds flit around the flowers enjoying the sap and it is always worth having at least one aloe in your garden to enjoy the birds they attract.

When planting them domestically, they do not need rich soils although they will benefit from them and they need up to eight hours of sunshine a day.

About its healing effect

The sap from the Aloe vera plant is enormously important for its healing properties.

Aloe vera gel treats mild burns, and Aloe vera in toothpaste treats candida, plaque and gingivitis. It can also help with the eradication of acne.

Extract of Aloe vera juice added to smoothies or mixed with fruit juices helps with hydration, which leads to improved liver function, and it is a rich source of antioxidants and vitamins B,C and E. Aloes are the only plant source of Vitamin B-12, which makes it an excellent supplement for vegetarians and vegans.

Added to this, Aloe vera controls the secretion of acid in your stomach, reducing heartburn and combating gastric ulcers. It does not contain sugar and has only a few calories, so the dietary benefits are there.

The Aloe Farm

On the strength of all this information, and longing to see a magnificent show of aloes in flower, I drove out to Andy de Wets Aloe Farm in Hartbeespoort.

De Wet developed a passion for aloes as a young man and hybridised his first aloe in 1973, after which he went on to study botany, and is now recognised as the biggest grower and hybridiser of aloes in the world. He exports his products all around the world.

From the more than 550 natural occurring species, he has hybridised many more, with beautiful shapes and colours and sizes.

There is the splendid Aloe Bafana developed for the 2010 Fifa World Cup, featuring a mass of yellow flowers; the two-tone Aloe Rocket which is dedicated to South Africas very own rocketman, Elon Musk; and the Aloe Peri-Peri and Hedgehog are two of his biggest sellers.

Close to his heart is the saving of aloes in the wild, as people often strip the veld of naturally-occurring aloe plants, such as the Aloe Marlothii. To this end, he has developed the large Aloe Magalies Mix, a hybrid which matches Aloe Marlothii in size. In addition, he is growing smaller hybrids from seed to mitigate against the theft of smaller aloes in the veld.

The names he gives many of his aloes are glorious, such as Aloe Firefly, Aloe Marilyn (after the famous photo of her in the flared skirt), Aloe Crunchie, Aloe Tom Thumb, and Aloe Alligator with its extremely serrated leaves.

And so, the aloe reigns: interplanted with crassulas and cotyledons and Echeveria, they make the most splendid show of colour during the winter months, silent figures that add structure to the garden. And who knows, extrapolating from Fugards play, could the magnificent aloe possibly be a vehicle for peace in a tempestuous society? DM/ML

‘Will give up immortality for Maggi’: Twitter unbothered as Nestle acknowledges 60% of its food portfolio is unhealthy – Free Press Journal

The worlds largest food company, Nestle, has acknowledged that more than 60 per cent of its mainstream food and drinks products do not meet a "recognised definition of health" and that "some of our categories and products will never be 'healthy no matter how much we renovate", the Financial Times reported.

A presentation circulated among the top executives this year, seen by the Financial Times, said only 37 per cent of Nestle's food and beverages by revenues, excluding products such as pet food and specialised medical nutrition, achieve a rating above 3.5 under Australia's health star rating system.

This system scores food out of five stars and is used in research by international groups such as the Access to Nutrition Foundation.

As per the report, Nestle, the maker of KitKat, Maggi and Nescafe, describes the 3.5 star threshold as a "recognised definition of health".

However, Indians are die-hard fans of Maggi. We can live without a lot of things but never Maggi. The Maggi that promises that it will get ready in 2 minutes always takes more than 5 minutes, but we still trust it with eyes shut. We love it endlessly.

So, when Indians heard this news, hearts broke collectively. However, ardent Maggi fans seem to be ready to risk their health for it.

Here's what Maggie fans are saying on Twitter. Have a look.

Can Jupiter Use his Powers and Wisdom to Rectify Racial Injustice and Inequality?: Ram Devineni and Yusef Komunyakaa on their Tribeca-Premiering AR…

Jupiter Invincible, the latest augmented reality comic book from Ram Devineni and his NY-based Rattapallax media house, marks a bit of a departure for the doc filmmaker and technologist. Best known in the AR world for his comic book series Priyas Shakti starring Indias first female superhero and rape survivor (and UN Women-designated gender equality champion) Devineni now travels both back to these shores and back in time, all the way to pre-Civil War Maryland. And he brings along an impressive trio of collaborators.

Our superhero of this tale, the titular Jupiter, is the invention of the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa. And though Jupiter might be an enslaved teenager hes also immortal and able to join forces with the more mortal superhero Harriet Tubman on her Underground Railroad mission to freedom. Together with illustrator Ashley A. Woods (whos worked on Tomb Raider, Niobe and the Ladycastle series) and editor Eric Battle (whos drawn for both DC Comics and Marvel Comics), Devineni and Komunyakaa have created a futuristic history lesson able to leap from festival exhibitions, to a staged reading, to (with any luck) a classroom near you in a single bound.

Filmmaker was fortunate enough to catch up with half of the creative super team, Devineni and Komunyakaa, just prior to the comic books TFF launch on June 9th.

Filmmaker: Ram, I believe youre the only non-African-American to be involved in this project, so how exactly did it come about? Was the idea for Jupiter Invincible brought to you by one of the other artists?

Devineni: The initial idea for the comic was mine, but it was more of a concept. I wanted to create a story about an African-American enslaved person who had the power of immortality. Even though he could not die or be killed, he did not have foresight. So he would witness the repercussions of his actions, even 100 years in the future. Can Jupiter use his powers and wisdom to change the course of history to rectify racial injustice and inequality? That was the nucleus of the idea, but it was Yusef Komunyakaa who made it into reality by writing a brilliant story with complex characters and scenarios. Yusef can speak more to that.

Komunyakaa: I hope Jupiter Invincible renders a slanted gaze into that brutal institution where rather obscene wealth and privilege rose out of, and has been passed down generations. Jupiter is an albino, and this makes him doubly an outcast. After getting struck by lightning, going to the netherworld where his mother reigns after dying in childbirth, and then returning to the plantation with skin now Black, he seems an evenhanded young man who feels that he was born to talk horses into obedience. However, Jupiter is naturally defiant because he says, My heart is not a slave.

Filmmaker: You two have collaborated with illustrator Ashley A. Woods and editor Eric Battle to create Jupiter Invincible. So how did this process work? Did you approach the project as a unit, or did each of you tackle only your specific area of expertise?

Devineni: Although I am the overall producer and brought all the different talents together, I believe it was a collaborative process and that everyone shared their opinions and inputs into every aspect. My initial idea was very rudimentary but became concrete after conversing with Yusef about the story and characters. We spent several months in 2019 developing it. After our conversations Yusef would write a few more pages until we had enough for the first edition. This was Yusefs first comic book but he is a master poet and storyteller. He wrote it more like a stage play, so I had to convert it into the comic-book format before working with Ashley A. Woods on her stunning designs and artwork. I really believe we had the perfect team to create Jupiter Invincible. There was beautiful synergy between everyone involved in the project.

Filmmaker: Im very curious to hear about the research that went into the project, specifically at the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg and at the Hampton Plantation in Maryland. In addition, youre bringing to life photos from the Library of Congress. So how do all these elements intersect in the final work?

Devineni: The idea to create the comic book started in the summer of 2019, when I was selected by American Arts Incubator to run a comic book workshop in Durban, South Africa. This was my first trip to South Africa, and I had very limited knowledge of its history. While in Durban I met some of the Indian and Black freedom fighters who were involved in the struggle to end apartheid. They told me their stories. Later I would spend time in Johannesburg researching the movement at the Apartheid Museum.

Looking at the historical photos, there were many similarities between the apartheid complex and the power structures that were created during the Jim Crow era in America. Afterwards I spent several months at the Merriweather Art District in Colombia, Maryland where I visited the Hampton Plantation, and followed the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubmans pathways to freedom. What was apparent about slavery was a vast system to brutalize and exploit African-Americans that continued after the Civil War. The shameless opulence of the plantation mansions contrasted dramatically with the slave quarters. I relentlessly photographed everything, knowing I would use the materials for a future story.

It was only later when I started working with Yusef on the comic book that I decided to integrate the images into Ashleys artwork through augmented reality. It was critical to show the reality of slavery and life on the plantation. I also utilized the digital archive of photos and stories from the US Library of Congress and put them into the AR. Even though our comic book is fictional there is sound historical research, and the characters are based on authentic people.

Filmmaker: Jupiter Invincible comes with the exhibition at Tribeca, followed by another at the Schomburg Center Literary Festival. And then youve got the staged reading at the Stella Adler Studio (of Acting). So why this multi-pronged strategy? Are you hoping to reach as many different audiences as possible?

Devineni: I am proud that our comic book and exhibition is very approachable for young audiences and accessible from different avenues. Through the augmented reality in the book and the exhibition at Tribeca audiences can see the imaginative use of AR to go deeper into the story and history and experience the spectacle of the technology and see Ashleys powerful artwork. While at the Schomburg Center Literary Festival we want audiences to appreciate the beautiful language written by one of Americas greatest poets, Yusef Komunyakaa. I also believe the comic is easily adaptable for theater and cinema, and we hope to showcase this at the Stella Adler Studio. We are also doing virtual events and workshops at Comic Con Africa. We want to make the correlation between apartheid in South Africa and slavery in America.

Filmmaker:Do you have a plan in place to eventually get Jupiter Invincible into schools across the US?

Devineni: We are releasing the comic book for free in multiple formats, and we hope to bring this back to Columbia (Maryland) and introduce it in their libraries and school system. Obviously this is a complicated process with the pandemic and with schools reopening, but we have some remarkable partners and supporters in the community. The comic book is a mixture of pop culture art, literature, history and technology perfect for young people and schools.

When I went to school in New Jersey in the 1980s and 1990s there was very little exposure to stories about African-Americans or slavery. The only time I learned about slavery in school was when we watched the TV miniseries Roots, by Alex Haley. That was it, and the topic was never mentioned again. I believe bold new stories and narratives are needed to create a cultural shift and challenge perceptions about race in America.

Komunyakaa: Personally, I feel that such a comic book goes beyond mere entertainment, and it probably could create a slightly diffident dialogue. We have just begun; this is the first installment of an imagined character in a historical landscape. And everything that happens on the page has meaning. I feel that comedy and satire also enter this psychological space. We have just opened the first door to Jupiters life. Get ready for surprises and twists in the labyrinth.

Ted Nugent repeats baseless claims that Antifa and BLM activists were behind Capitol riot – NME

Ted Nugent has repeated the baseless conspiracy theory that Januarys riot at the US Capitol was sparked by Antifa and Black Lives Matter activists.

In January, Donald Trumps supporters stormed the Capitol, desecrated the building and attacked police officers.

Five people died during the armed insurrection, including Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick.

Trump was widely accused of inciting the attack, having addressed the crowd at a Washington rally only hours prior where he told them to go to the Capitol, show strength and fight much harder.

Speaking during a YouTube livestream on Monday (June 7), Nugent told his viewers: We know that the January 6th event at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., those werent Trump supporters destroying stuff and breaking windows and being vandals.

Those were Antifa and Black Lives Matter wearing Trump shirts and hats. I wanna be on record right now for that. Insurrection my ass.

Ted Nugent in March 2021 (Picture: Gary Miller/Getty Images)

He added: So let me make it clear: January 6th wasnt an insurrection. Those were terrorists, like Black Lives MatterandAntifadressed inDonald Trumpshirts doing all the damage. The realTrumpsupporters were conservatives that believe in God, family, country, law and order trying to stop them.

And I would ask So why were the cops waving them in? And heres the question America demands an answer to: who was the cop that shot the Navy vet? Was it Navy or Air Force? It doesnt matter, cause warriors of the military are all heroes and warriors anyhow. I wanna know the cops name that shot the lady, and I wanna know whats gonna happen to him.

While Nugent has previously made similar claims, FBIdirectorChristopher A. Wray previously testified to the Senate Judiciary Committee that there was no evidence to support claims that Antifa, anarchists or provocateurs who didnt supportTrumpwere involved in the Capitol siege.

Nugent, meanwhile, previously called Donald Trump the greatest president in our lifetime, and said he represents the heart and soul of the best American families out there.

The right-wing rocker also contracted Covid-19 in April and said hes never been so scared in all my life as when he battled the virus.

Finally, Portland Antifa is being brought to justice for its violence – New York Post

After a year of anarchy and unchecked violence, prosecutors are finally doing something about Antifas rolling riot in Portland, Ore.: These last two weeks have seen more than two dozen suspected Antifa thugscharged for an assortment of violent crimes dating as far back as November.

It shouldnt have taken a whole year of watching protesters pelt police with Molotov cocktails and destroy local businesses to realize that the do nothing strategy wasnt working, but here we are.

Its a notable turnaround for District Attorney Mike Schmidt, who after taking office last August refused to prosecute 90 percent of riot- and protest-related cases. At the time, he claimed that change sometimes takes property damage and that it requires more than just peaceful protests to get the governments attention.

But dozens of deaths, hundreds of injured cops and billions in insurance damages across the country seem to have changed his tune. Or maybe it was the fact that Mayor Ted Wheeler received death threats last month for promising to take our city back from the reign of terror.

Charges against 10 suspected Antifa were announced on Thursday alone, mostly for vandalism around Election Day and an Inauguration Day riot. Several more face federal charges.

For the sake of Portlands beleaguered citizens, and for the national rule of law, hope this is just the beginning of a long-overdue crackdown.

Finally, Portland Antifa is being brought to justice for its violence - New York Post

Journalist Andy Ng Says He Was Nearly Killed by ‘Antifa’ While Undercover at Oregon Protest – Yahoo News

Conservative journalist Andy Ng said he was chased and beaten by antifa members while covering a protest in Portland, Oregon, late last month.

Why this matters: Ng, who says he has focused on exposing antifa for years, said no journalist in America should ever face violence for doing his or her job.

The attack occurred on May 28, while Ng was covering the ongoing protests and riots in Portland for a new chapter of his book, Unmasked: Inside Antifas Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy.

In a Twitter thread on June 2, Ng explained that he had to mitigate risks like other beat reporters would on the field, so he covered his face and eyes to do my job and stay alive.

Ng told Fox News his disguise began to fall apart when rioters noticed that he had not been participating in throwing projectiles at law enforcement or trying to damage the Central police station.

The mob then allegedly pulled his mask off, and upon confirming his identity, chased him through downtown Portland before one caught up and repeatedly punched his head and face.

A video of the incident shared by the Willamette Week shows a group of masked individuals who were mostly white banging the windows of The Nines Hotel, where Ng found a temporary refuge before ending up in the emergency room with multiple injuries.

Not the first time: This is the second time in two years that Ng, who is openly gay and the son of Vietnamese immigrants, has fallen victim to mob violence.

In June 2019, Ng suffered a brain hemorrhage after being attacked by alleged antifa protesters who covered him in eggs, pepper spray and bear spray, as well as milkshakes believed to contain quick-dry cement. At the time, then-Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang expressed support for Ng, tweeting, Journalists should be safe to report on a protest without being targeted.

Since then, Ng said he has made more than two dozen reports of threats and attacks to Portland police, but he has not heard back to date.

Ng shared photos and videos from the latest incident, including screenshots of tweets that talk about finishing him. He also shared two undated photos of vandalism that explicitly call for his murder.

The attacks against me and threats on my life are retribution for my work as a journalist, recording the tactics and true ideology of an extremist clandestine movement that relies on deception and regards the truth as the greatest threat of all, he wrote.

The Portland Tribunes Zane Sparling first reported the incident on Twitter. At least one man was charged with felony unlawful use of a weapon, felony attempted assault, felony riot and other crimes, but Ng said his bail was immediately covered by an Antifa bail fund group.

Ng, who is currently editor-at-large at The Post Millennial, called on Portland police and federal authorities to deal with the antifa before operatives hiding behind their masks actually kill someone on their watch. He also called on other journalists and those who believe in the First Amendment to join him in fighting the tyranny of those who use violence to terrorize, silence and suppress the truth.

Alleged Santa Cruz Boogaloo Militia Planned ‘War’ on Police, Disguising Themselves as Antifa – SFist

The far-right militia group connected to the killing two law enforcement officers last year had far more elaborate plans to kill many more officers. And, unsurprisingly, we learn of child enticement charges against the very people who claim a cabal of pedophiles is running the government.

It was one year ago yesterday, at the height of the George Floyd demonstrations, that Santa Cruz Sheriff's Sergeant Damon Gutzwiller was shot and killed in an ambush, and police later arrested Boogaloo-affiliated Air Force veteran Steven Carillo for the attack. The white van used in that attack was linked to the previous weeks killing of federal security officer David Underwood, an operation meant to leave antifa protesters blamed for the murder, a lie that worked to the degree that then-vice President Mike Pence repeated it at last Augusts Republican National Convention.

But today we learn that the blame antifa strategy was far further reaching, and with much deadlier aspirations. The Santa Cruz Sentinel just uncovered court documents alleging that Carillo was part of a Boogaloo-affiliated militia group that had elaborate plans for war on law enforcement and schemes to make it look like antifa did it.

This new news is actually news from April that was not reported at the time. In court filings on four more associates connected to the scheme, federal prosecutors argued that the group were not technically Boogaloos the right-wingers who don Hawaiian shirts and hope for a second Civil War but a Boogaloo subset who called themselves the Grizzly Scouts, and they hoped to blend in as antifa.

The filings point to a document that the Grizzly Scouts called Operations Order, wherein this mini-militia referred to law enforcement officers as enemy forces. The feds allege that the group intended to capture police as POWs, and that once cops were captured, POWs will be searched for intel and gear, interrogated, stripped naked, blindfolded, driven away and released into the wilderness blindfolded with hands bound.

The boys were also hoping that their hero-messiah Donald Trump would invoke the Insurrection Act, which to them would set off all manner of other opportunity for mayhem. [T]hat ^^^ will be our sign, co-defendant Jesse Rush allegedly texted the group. That effectively means the federal gov has declared war on things theyre afraid of.

Other texts detail the plan to appear as Antifa when committing acts of violence. Its the tactically sound option, co-defendant Robert Blancas texted to the group, according to prosecutors. Them fucking each other up only helps us.

But the coup de grce here (no pun intended) is that despite the consistent wingnut-QAnon-Proud Boy claim that key Democratic leaders are involved in some secretive pedophile cabal, the real sexual exploitation of minors is coming from within the conservatives' house. As the Sentinel reports, the above-mentioned Blancas was not eligible for bail because he also faces a child enticement charge related to alleged sexual conversations with a teen girl that were discovered during the investigation.

Letter to the editor: Grassley proudly stands with democracy’s foes – theperrynews.com

To the editor:

The alarm that we felt watching the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol insurrection demands a thorough investigation. The attempt to stop the transfer of power that day with violence is unconscionable. The peaceful transition of power is an essential element of a functioning democratic government.

In voting against the creation of an independent commission to investigate the deadly Jan. 6 storming of the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, Sen. Chuck Grassley objected that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not agree to form a bipartisan committee to look at the many other attacks on government buildings and officials that occurred in the months leading up to Jan. 6.

Grassley said, If we truly want to get to the bottom of antigovernment violence, intellectual honesty demands that we take a broader look at the destruction and violence that occurred in nearly every major city over the last year.

The violent attack on the Capitol Police and the trashing of the Capitol are not comparable to the many peaceful protests that in a few cases turned into riots. We already know what protesters were marching for across the nation last summer: racial justice. We do not know the insurrectionists intent in tearing down our democracy.

Another Antifa beating won’t silence truth-teller Andy Ngo – New York Post

As one member of the angry Antifa mob chasing Andy Ngo down a Portland, Ore., street tackled him to the ground just before midnight Friday, the journalist heard more approaching and was left with one thought, he told The Post: This is how Im to going to die. I hope they make it quick.

Ngos crime, in the eyes of these criminals? Simply documenting what they do.

As the feds focus on the supposed threat from right-wing violent extremists, Antifa goons continue their terrorism and multimillion-dollar vandalism and face no consequences for again assaulting the man working tirelessly to expose them.

Independent reporter Ngo is one of the few brave enough to cover Antifa. He narrowly escaped Friday night when two others covering the unrest around the Justice Center showed up, distracting his attackers. Ngo sprinted to one of the few businesses not boarded up, a hotel. With wounds all over his body and a bloodied eyeball, he called 911 on his cell as the taunts came from outside.

I cant wait for you to come out, Andy, a woman screamed in livestreamed footage. Were going to beat the fuck out of you, bh.

Portland Antifa protesters already put Ngo in the hospital back in 2019. Hes gotten many death threats since, and graffiti around town reads Kill Andy Ngo and Murder Andy Ngo.

Since the latest attack, Ive been unable to walk. I cant sleep. Its excruciatingly painful just to use the toilet, the soft-spoken son of Vietnamese immigrants told us. He finds it hard to put into words the psychological impact but refuses to let the mob beat him into silence.

Im staying on this beat, he declared, adding its more important than ever because local media outlets play by Antifas rules, such as not using cameras to document the thugs criminal behavior. Not Ngo: They view me as an existential threat because one of the things I do is when they get arrested, I look at county jail records. He then stays up all night documenting their social media posts before they get a chance to delete them.

Some outlets like to claim theres little evidence of Antifa presence at protests. But there is, and Ngo collects it.

Ngo sees no way Antifa can achieve its goal of destabilizing the entire country. But it still terrorizes towns like Portand, where politicians cowardice can let anarchy flourish. Indeed, Portland police never charged anyone in the 2019 attack, and nearly a week after this latest one, Ngo still hasnt even heard from a detective.

The media could use a lot more truth-tellers like Andy Ngo. And the country could use a lot more officials paying attention to him.

Ron Paul: The Coming Biden/Putin Train-Wreck Summit OpEd – Eurasia Review

I have my doubts whether the Putin-Biden summit in Geneva will take place later this month, but even if somehow it is pulled off, recent Biden Administration blunders mean the chance anything of substance will be achieved is virtually nil.

The Biden Administration was supposed to signal a return of the adults to the room. No more bully Trump telling NATO its useless, ripping up international climate treaties, and threatening to remove troops from the Middle East and beyond. US foreign policy would again flourish under the steady, practiced hands of the experts.

Then Biden blurted out in a television interview that President Putin was a killer with no soul. Then US Secretary of State Antony Blinken discovered the hard way that his Chinese counterparts were in no mood to be lectured on an international rules-based order that is routinely flouted by Washington.

Its going to be a rough ten days for President Biden. Just as news breaks that under the Obama/Biden Administration the US was routinely and illegally spying on its European allies, he is preparing to meet those same allies, first at the G7 summit in England on June 11-13 and then at the June 14th NATO meeting in Brussels.

Make no mistake, Joe Biden is up to his eyeballs in this scandal. Ed Snowden Tweeted late last month when news broke that the US teamed up with the Danes to spy on the rest of Europe, that Biden is well-prepared to answer for this when he soon visits Europe since, of course, he was deeply involved in this scandal the first time around.

Though Germanys Merkel and Frances Macron have been loyal US lapdogs, the revelation of how Washington treats its allies has put them in the rare position of having to criticize Washington. Outrageous and unacceptable are how they responded to the news.

Russia has been routinely accused (without evidence) of malign conduct and interference in internal US affairs, but it turns out that the country actually doing the spying and meddling was the US all along and against its own allies!

Surely this irony is not lost on Putin.

Biden has bragged in the US media that he would be taking Putin to task for Russias treatment of political dissidents like Alexei Navalny. Biden wrote recently in the Washington Post, that when he meets Putin, I will again underscore the commitment of the United States, Europe and like-minded democracies to stand up for human rights and dignity.

Perhaps President Putin will remind him of how the Biden Administration continues the slow-motion murder of Julian Assange for the non-crime of being a journalist exposing government misdeeds.

Perhaps Putin will remind Biden of how US political dissidents are being treated, such as the hundreds arrested for what the Democrats and the mainstream media laughably call the January 6th Insurrection. Many of these non-violent and unarmed protesters have been held in solitary confinement with no chance of bail, even though they have no prior arrests or convictions. Most await trial on minor charges that may not even take place until next year.

The Washington foreign policy establishment is hopelessly corrupt. The weaponization of the US dollar to bring the rest of the world to heel is backfiring. Only a serious change in course toward non-interventionism and non-aggression can avert a disaster. Time is running out.

Cryptocurrency : Ron Paul on Bitcoin: It should be legalized as money and compete with the dollar Explica .co – Explica

Former member of the United States House of Representatives Ron Paul stated that he wants to legitimize the dollars competitors like Bitcoin and choose a currency used by the people, not the government. Freedom of choice will solve the problem, he said.

In a recent interview, Ron Paul acknowledged that he researched Bitcoin as an alternative asset. He also spoke about the Ron Paul Liberty Report, created in 2015 by the Texas Congressman to provide provocative opinions and analysis on current issues affecting our lives and finances.

When asked about the acceptance of Bitcoin, Paul said that he knows more cases of precious metals being used as money than cryptocurrencies. I was fascinated with it for a long time. But I am also fascinated with what is coming, he said.

People should have as much freedom as possible to choose, he added. He later outlined the bill he presented to Congress to not only audit the Fed, but also to get rid of legal tender laws.

He explained that the current government would not allow Bitcoin to compete with the dollar domestically. My goal is to legalize competition and people will solve it. Freedom of choice will fix it. My concern is that governments for centuries have been very eager to be in control of money. Trust me, they wont give up control of the money.

He was asked what he meant when he said that competition should be legalized. Right now, if you buy and sell gold, tax it, they can do that, he replied. He also pointed out that if you make a profit on Bitcoin, you read stories about people paying taxes on it. You cannot tax money. If you bought a dollar a year ago and it falls 10%, you cannot take a loss because your dollar has lost value, he replied.

Recently, he also recognized that some people are very passionate about Bitcoin and see it as the only currency that can replace the dollar. But in his opinion the dollar will hold, but it wont be worth much.

Why Most Candidates Dont Run Again After Losing Twice – FiveThirtyEight

On paper, former Texas Rep. Beto ORourke and current Florida Rep. Charlie Crist have little in common. The former, a somewhat progressive three-term Democratic House member with a failed presidential bid, is reportedly mulling a gubernatorial run in Texas. The latter, a former Republican, is hoping to reclaim his old office in the Florida governors mansion this time as a Democrat by challenging Republican incumbent Ron DeSantis. But both ORourke and Crist are risking their political credibility if they run again and lose, as theyve already failed to win two consecutive runs for office. Even worse, they could be marked as perennial candidates. And given the track record of candidates who have already had multiple unsuccessful bids for higher office, both men are facing uphill climbs.

For starters, candidates whove lost just once let alone twice often dont have much better luck the next go-around. We looked at candidates whove run for U.S. Senate, governor or president after they lost just one election and then tried to run again and found that since 1998, only 33 of 121 of them have managed to win higher office after having lost once. Losses transcended political parties, too, with 53 Democrats and 36 Republicans failing in their second attempt.

In understanding why these 33 candidates were successful the second time around, one pattern stands out: Just over one-third of these candidates were already in office when they tried to seek another seat; specifically, they were all sitting senators with their eyes on the presidency (think Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, John McCain of Arizona and Cory Booker of New Jersey, to name a few). Another 30 percent were candidates who unsuccessfully ran for one office but successfully ran for another (Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon, former North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp). And then there were 27 percent who lost their first race but won in a subsequent election for the same office (former North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory, Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson, South Dakota Sen. John Thune, former Nevada Sen. John Ensign). The last notable trend here is the people who have run for president more than once, winning their partys primary after previously losing it (Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden). To be clear, though, neither Clinton nor Biden sought the presidency in back-to-back cycles; these are just the last two elected offices that either sought. (Clinton ran in 2008 and 2016, while Biden ran in 2008 and 2020.) And for Biden specifically, serving as Barack Obamas vice president for eight years may have helped his 2020 bid for president, as he was able to build up both his name recognition and political bona fides.

But after two failed bids, the numbers get even worse. Just 20 people have run for U.S. senator, governor or president after losing two consecutive elections. And only one, Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy, who won a 2016 runoff race after losing two previous Senate races, was successful.

Thats why several political scientists I spoke to said that for candidates like ORourke and Crist, running a third time after two consecutive losses is a dangerous game. It is hard for people to run successfully after losing twice, said Peter Francia, a professor of political science at East Carolina University. Donors want winners. As a result, fundraising is a challenge. Interest groups want winners. So, endorsements are a challenge. Local, state, and national party organizations are also strategic in where they place their resources. Voters may even grow tired of a perennial candidate.

In other words, history doesnt bode well for ORourke and Crist, and neither do the polls. Its too early in the cycle for reliable head-to-head polling, but favorability ratings show that despite being relatively well-known, neither man is terribly popular. An April statewide poll by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler found that just 35 percent of registered Texas voters viewed ORourke very or somewhat favorably compared with 37 percent who viewed him very or somewhat unfavorably. And in a February Mason-Dixon poll of registered Florida voters, just 27 percent viewed Crist favorably, compared with 41 percent who viewed him unfavorably.

Plus, if ORourke and Crist do run and lose, theyd be in pretty bad company, as people who lose three elections in a row are not considered serious politicians. We found 19 candidates who had lost three or more elections since 1998 per our analysis, and it included trivial presidential candidates like former Rep. Ron Paul of Texas and Alan Keyes, a former diplomat and radio commentator who ran long-shot bids twice not to mention a bid for the U.S. Senate, too. Not all candidates started out unserious, though. Former Washington state Sen. Dino Rossi, for instance, was a respected politician who ruined his career by running for office unsuccessfully several times. That said, many who fall into this category are like Paul and Keyes, or Roque De La Fuente, a businessman and car dealership owner who lost so many times on the Republican and Democratic tickets that hes now a perennial third-party candidate.

The best-case scenario, then, for people like ORourke and Crist if they do run again and lose is that they become someone like former state Rep. Cam Cavasso of Hawaii a respectable politician whose legacy was overshadowed as he gained a reputation as a perennial loser. (Beginning in 1984, Cavasso was elected to three consecutive terms in the Hawaii House but ran for a U.S. Senate seat three times and lost in 2004, 2010 and 2014.)

The process of losing tends to label one a loser, said David Barker, a professor of government at American University. You start to look like somebody whos just so ambitious that you dont care about anything else and you start to look like a little bit of a fool. If you want to be taken seriously, or seen as someone who cares about the issues, then you find non-political ways to contribute for a while, let some time go by and use that as a springboard for the future.

Plus, said Barker, having the stain of a loser isnt good for voter psychology. In fact, one 2015 study by professors at Washington University in St. Louis, Harvard University and UCLA, found that when Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney in 2012, Republicans reported happiness decreased twice as much as the reported happiness of Bostonians after the Boston Marathon bombing and American parents after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut. Thats because, the authors note, partisan identity is central to the self and well-being. [T]he pain of losing an election is much larger than the joy of winning one, they write. Election outcomes strongly affect the short-term happiness/sadness of partisan losers, with minimal impact on partisan winners.

Of course, this hasnt stopped a lot of candidates from running again, and some of them, like Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who have each run for president twice, still have their reputations intact thanks to their political dynasty or passionate fan base. But theyre the exception, not the norm. Most perennial candidates dont find much political success, and after two consecutive losses, a candidates chances of winning get dicey.

In short, Barker said, if voters most recent memory of a candidate is two election losses, they may not want to vote for that person again. They start to view you as desperate, he said. Youre like the guy who wont stop calling after youve already told them no.

Bitcoin (BTC) is money and should be taxed the same way, says famous politician Ron Paul Crypto Insiders – Cheraw Chronicle

Famous American politician Ron Paul thinks so Bitcoin (BTC) Money and must be recognized as such by law. Former Republican presidential candidate calls for full endorsement of Cryptocurrency.

Help legitimize competition and I think people will solve it on their own. Freedom of choice solves it.

The liberal said in an interview with Kitco News on June 3. Paul, 85, acknowledges that bitcoin, like gold, is being sought as an alternative to the US dollar. Both originals are treated as hedge or collar Or a safe haven against the unprecedented printing of paper currency by central banks.

a

According to Paul, these alternative forms of money must also be recognized as such by law and then taxed in the same way as fiat currency:

Right now, if you buy and sell gold, it gets taxed. They can. When you make a profit with Bitcoin, you read stories about people who are taxed. You cant tax money, it doesnt. If you buy A year ago and fell 10%, you cant afford to lose because the dollar has lost its value.

However, Paul expects US regulators to further regulate and tax cryptocurrencies as they compete with the dollar. According to the former member of the House of Representatives, governments are known for their desire to have complete control over money and they will never relinquish that control.

pol . appears This weekend at the massive Bitcoin event in Miami to say the following:

I wont try to technically explain exactly if thats the case [crypto] Good, bad or indifferent. I will advocate more for the legalization of freedom of choice and for people to be able to decide for themselves and not the government on their behalf.

Bitcoin is Ripe for Scams. Even Donald Trump Can See That. – The New Republic

The structural integrity of his brain might be questionable, but if anyone can spot a scam, its former President Donald Trump, whose business history is riddled with complaints of unpaid bills and shady financial dealings. On Monday, in an interview with Fox Business, Trump denounced Bitcoin, the volatile digital currency. Bitcoin, it just seems like a scam, said Trump. I dont like it because its another currency competing against the dollar. (Trump added, strangely for a supposed billionaire, that he was not invested in the stock market at the moment.)

Cue the obligatory Onion article: The worst person you know just made a great point. Trump hit on something that even Bitcoin critics sometimes overlook. Bitcoins status as a stateless, nonsovereign currency is, to its adherents, an obvious benefit. It frees them, in their view, from the shackles of fiat currency, which is run by tyrannical central banks that print currency out of thin air. For committed coiners, there are a range of other benefits, but this sense of independence from the state itself is key. For critics, though, its a quick road to feudalism, to a speculative market dominated by the biggest bag holders and those who operate cryptocurrency exchanges and other intermediaries. Rather than promoting economic liberty by being a stateless currency, Bitcoin provides entre to a wildcat market dominated by fraudsters, scammers, and powerful institutional investors. Theres a reason why Trump said what he did: He recognized his milieu.

In the ideologically tinged Bitcoin battle, one need not be either a fanatical coiner or a fiat nut. Nor does one have to abide by Trumps jingoistic economic policy to understand that a currency backed by the state carries certain benefits, and an inherent stability, that will never be found in a volatile digital currency invented by a still unknown creator, which is backed by nothing more than code and the faith of its holders. With its dramatic swings in recent weeks, Bitcoin has, yet again, proved its unfitness as a currency and its continued resemblance to something more like a wildly manipulative multilevel marketing scheme.

Don Huffines Plotted Governor Run as the Trump Guy. Then Trump Endorsed Greg Abbott. – Texas Monthly

Don Huffines arrived at an Austin restaurant for his first meeting of the Senate Republican Caucus and he was nervously clutching one of his favorite documentsthe Texas Republican party platform. This was in January of 2015, the state legislative session was underway, and Huffines, one of the newest senators, was still riding high after his defeat of a more moderate Republican incumbent whom he depicted as a crony capitalist and RINO (Republican in Name Only).

When it was Huffiness turn to speak at the caucus meeting, he told his nineteen colleagues that the platform represented the will of the party and that they needed to focus on turning the grassroots hopes and dreams into reality. There were two plans in particular, among the hundreds in the document, that he wanted to see passed: ending the franchise tax on businesses and making it legal to carry a handgun without a license. At the very least, he said, Republican senators were obliged to get those issues to the floor, where lawmakers could be held accountable for their votes.

His words, Huffines recalls, were met with silence. Gradually one, two, three, four, or more senators got up from the table in the middle of the meal and left the room. Needless to say, the rest of the night was awkward. And so too were the next four years. In the Senate, Huffines remained the truest of true believers, adamant and apart from both the Democrats and most Republicans. His single term ended four years later when he lost to Democrat Nathan Johnson by eight percentage points in a district that Governor Greg Abbott won by four. Few Democrats or Republicans in the Senate lamented Huffiness departure.

In the last few years, he has frequently recounted his memory of his first caucus dinner to conservative grassroots activists, who, as he tells them, are held in the same disdain as he. Patriots, I am going to tell you something you might not know, but that you need to know, Huffines said in January at a tea party gathering in Plano. Most, but not all, of your elected Republican officeholders, they dont like you. As a matter of fact, its fair to say that a lot of them, they belittle you, they make fun of you, they use you, they are duplicitous, and they are liars. And you know why? Because you might hold them accountable.

Such heated rhetoric has made Huffines persona non grata in most GOP circles.

But Huffines, who hails from a prominent and wealthy Dallas-area business family, welcomes the hatred. Indeed, its the kind of negative energy that he hopes will propel him into the Governors Mansion.

On May 10, Huffines announced that he would run against Governor Greg Abbott in 2022. His basic message: Abbott is no conservative. Its been 27 years since a Democrat was last elected to statewide office, but Huffines takes no satisfaction from that. He does not believe that any of the four Republican governors of Texas since Reconstructionneither Bill Clements nor George W. Bush, neither Rick Perry nor certainly Abbotthas been sufficiently conservative. Nor does he believe that the Legislature, completely under Republican control since 2003, has had a single conservative session. That includes the one that just ended, with Abbott signing into law a virtual ban on abortion and with legislation allowing permitless carry of firearms awaiting the governors signature.

Its not good enough, Huffines told Texas Monthly. Weve controlled everything in Austin for twenty years, everything. And year after year, we go back and beg for our priorities to become law. And maybe we get one or two issues done, three maybe, and theyre always watered down.

Huffiness candidacy is a very long shot, but not one Abbott, ever paranoid about threats from his right flank, can ignore. When Huffines launched his campaign, he made no secret of his strategy: he would run to Abbotts right as the only real Trump candidate in this race and seek the endorsement of the former president. I dont think Trumps gonna support Abbott, I really dont, he told me in mid-May. I dont know why he would. Abbotts never supported Trumps agenda. Hes never leading the charge for Trump. Hes never tried.

Yet on Tuesday, deploying his trademark Random Capitalization, Trump bestowed upon Abbott his Complete and Total Endorsement for re-election. He will never let you down! A half hour later, Huffines replied. Texas Primary voters and Trump supporters will decide for themselves who will lead our state forward and who has failed Texans repeatedly on issues that matter most. Huffines declared, I am the clear Trump candidate in the governors race.

That self-proclaimed status as the truest Trumper in the race may come under challenge. On Friday, Texas GOP chairman Allen West announced that he is stepping down as state party chairman and preparing to run for another office, though he was coy about which race he favored. Bumptious agriculture commissioner Sid Miller is also poised to jump into the GOP race for governor.

The unusually fluid situation presents all sorts of quandaries: Can Huffines (or West or Miller) overcome Trumps chosen candidate in Texas? With the former presidents seal of approval, is Abbott freed from the need to perpetually mollify critics on the right, or is he borrowing a different kind of trouble by becoming beholden to Trump?

Huffines is one of four brothers, the children of J.L. and Launa Huffines, best known for their familys car dealerships. While still in his teens Don Huffines was inspired by the writing of Murray Rothbard, an economist and political philosopher who was one of the fathers of paleolibertarianism, which blends economic libertarianism with social and cultural conservatism. In arguing for a strategy of right-wing populism, Rothbard was stirred by the example of the late red-baiting Wisconsin senator Joe McCarthy, admiring his willingness and ability to reach out, to short-circuit the power elite: liberals, centrists, the media, the intellectuals, the Pentagon, Rockefeller Republicans, and reach out and whip up the masses directly. Rothbard exulted that even as the Ruling Elite, from Official Right to Left defeated white supremacist David Duke when he ran for governor of Louisiana in 1992, he sure scared the bejesus out of them.

Huffines went to A&M for a year, before transferring to UT. After graduating with a degree in finance, Huffines went into residential real estate with his twin brother, Phillip. His older brother James, a banker, got involved in establishment Republican politics, serving as a top aide to Governor Clements in the eighties, an adviser to Governor Bush, and chair of Rick Perrys transition when he became governor. Huffines was drawn in a different direction, into the political orbit of Ron Paul, the former Republican member of Congress from Lake Jackson and three-time presidential candidate who was deeply influenced by paleolibertarianism. History will show this man has done more to change the political discourse of the world than most any man in modern history, Huffines said in his introductory remarks when Paul, making his last run for president, spoke at the Republican state convention in Fort Worth in 2012.

Four years later, Huffines chaired the short-lived 2016 presidential campaign in Texas of Pauls son, Rand, a U.S. senator from Kentucky. But it wasnt until President Trump that Huffines found the man that Rothbard had been looking for. With all the odds stacked against him, the entire media against him, Huffines said, Trump, distinguished himself from all the other Republican candidates who have run for president in the past because there was actually a difference between him and the Democrat.

Abbott, by contrast, errs on the side of caution, Huffines said. In his response to the pandemic, Abbott showed too much deference to experts and too little respect for individual autonomy, Huffines said, calling the governors performance the final straw. On March 15, 2020, he tweeted a warning: a quarantine was coming and Texans personal and economic liberty were under attack. Two weeks later, Abbott issued a statewide stay-at-home order, while initially refusing to use those words.

On April 15 Huffines published an op-ed throwing down the gauntlet: Abbotts unTexan leadership had effectively shut down the 10th-largest economy in the world by not standing up to local leaders who are usurping his authority. Two days later, Abbott named his brother James to lead his Strike Force to Open Texas.

But as Abbott zigged and zagged in the months that followed, he emboldened his enemies. In May and June, he hastened the reopening of the economy after Dallas salon owner Shelley Luther emerged overnight as a Rothbardian heroine for defying the governors shutdown orders and serving a couple of days in jail for contempt. Then as COVID-19 numbers spiked, the governor, ahead of the Fourth of July, buttoned the economy back up and did what he said he wouldnt doimpose a statewide mask order.

Abbott opened the virtual state GOP convention in July with a prerecorded message defending his leadership and rebuking the naysayers. Lucky for him, the Zoom convention made it impossible for anyone to boo, or at least to be heard doing so. But four days later, former Florida congressman West was elected chairman of the party on a message that focused on attacking Abbotts tyranny. The party platform written at the convention notably condemned lockdowns and mask mandates. In October, Huffines joined West and Sid Miller in a protest outside the Governors Mansion. The barbarians were at the gate.

The past year has undoubtedly been a difficult one for Abbott, as he navigated the pandemic and presided over the spectacular failure of the states power grid, which is overseen by his appointees, during the February freeze. According to the most recent Texas Politics Project polling, conducted in April, Abbott had the support of 77 percent of Republicans. Thats down from 88 percent the previous spring, but perhaps better than might be expected.

And Abbotts legions of supporters, James Huffines notably among them, are all but saying I told you so to his critics, from both left and right. Everyone loves a good comeback story, and Texas is writing one for the ages, James Huffines wrote in an op-ed in early May. Thanks to the perseverance of Texans and the steady hand of Gov. Greg Abbott, Texas is now poised for a major economic comeback.

After his brothers announcement that he would run for governor, James Huffines issued a statement to Texas Monthly. Like many families, particularly in recent times, ours has differences of opinions about politics, he wrote. While concluding that it would be wise not to talk about the familys political differences, he said I have a 25-year relationship with Greg Abbott, have supported him in every one of his campaigns, and long before this situation arose committed to do so again. I think the Governor has done an excellent job for Texas and I am confident he will continue to do so.

Spoken like a man who takes the long view. Don Huffines, by contrast, sees the current moment in apocalyptic terms. When we lose Texas, we lose the free world. That means we lost civilization as we know it, he told his audience in Plano in June. Time is not on our side.

In 2018, Nathan Johnson was a first-time political candidate with an eclectic background. He has a physics degree, practices law, and composes music, scoring the Japanese anime series Dragon Ball Z. At some campaign appearances, Johnson would draw the political spectrum on a whiteboard. Hed place himself left of center, and former senator John Carona, whom Huffines defeated in the 2014 Republican primary, to the right of center. Then hed walk past the edge of the whiteboard and say, Huffines is out here.

Dont expect Huffines to inch closer to the whiteboard. At the tea party event in January, he shared the stage with former state representative Jonathan Stickland, a founding member of the far-right House Freedom Caucus and an adviser to Huffines. Stickland talked about the necessity of expanding the Overton Windowa term describing the acceptable spectrum of political discussionto the right. The Monday after Huffines announced, Abbott ended federal pandemic-related unemployment assistance two months before it was due to expire. That Tuesday, he banned governmental entities, including public schools, from requiring masks. The next day, he signed the law banning abortion the moment a fetal heartbeat is detectedbefore most women know theyre pregnant. Amazing how quick he moves when he has a primary challenger, tweeted former state representative Matt Rinaldi, a Huffines ally.

Has Trumps endorsement slammed shut the Overton Window? Or must Abbott now more closely track Trump, lest he appear ungrateful or undeserving of his blessing?

Huffines is wounded, but even without Trumps support he has the resources to present Abbott with the most serious primary challenge of his career. He recently released the names of five hundred Republican grassroots leaders backing his candidacy, including anti-abortion, progun rights, and anti-vaccine activists, who can and will make a lot of noise. Trumps endorsement wont silence them.

Nor does it seem likely to keep West (and maybe also Miller) from joining the fray. Their entrance would splinter the anti-Abbott vote, possibly forcing Abbott into a runoff, an eventuality that would leave the governor even more reliant on Trumps grace.

Regardless, Abbott may have to pay a price for the Trump endorsement. The governor has in recent years tread a careful path with Trump, appearing always loyal but in a far lower key than Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick or Senator Ted Cruz. Now with Trumps generous and timely endorsement, Abbott has no choice but to become Trumps main squeeze in Texas. Abbotts polite and useful distance from Trump was crushed in Tuesdays embrace. On Monday, as if on cue, the governor issued a disaster declaration for 34 counties along or near the border, citing an increase in unauthorized immigrants. If Democrats mount a serious general election challenge, that could be a liability for Abbott.

In the near term, it also complicates the politics of Senate Bill 7, the Texas GOPs prized voter integrity bill imposing new restrictions on voting, especially for Texans of color and those living in cities. When at the end of the session, Democrats fled the House, breaking quorum and killing the bill, Huffines blamed the defeat on Abbotts failure of leadership. Abbott has already said he will add the legislation to the agenda in a special session. SB 7 and sister legislation being pressed and passed by Republicans in state after state are, in part, a consequence of Trumps loss and his success in persuading most Republicans voters, against all the evidence, that the 2016 election was stolen. But the GOP lawmakers behind SB 7 have carefully avoided invoking Trumps campaign as a reason for the bill; its author, Senator Bryan Hughes, cites fraud he alleges (again, without evidence) took place in the 2018 midterms, while other state lawmakers have stated explicitly that the 2020 elections in Texas were legitimate.

It may now be harder to keep Trump from casting a shadow on the proceedings. When the voting legislation returns to center stage, it will be at a special session called by Abbott, who Trump promised Texans in his endorsement is all in on Election Integrity. Hours before the Abbott endorsement, the New York Times Maggie Haberman tweeted that Trump has been telling a number of people hes in contact with that he expects he will get reinstated by August.

Meanwhile, Huffines continues to serve up Trump-grade tartare. Trump promised to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. Huffines promises to finish the wall and have Texans pay for it. Im not asking permission from the federal government to secure Texass border, Huffines said. So far so good. No issue cuts closer to the bone for Texas Republicans than border security. But the Abbott ad writes itself. Trump: No Governor has done more to secure the Border and keep our communities safe than Greg Abbott.

Until Abbott touted Trumps endorsement Tuesday, the closest thing to an Abbott campaign response to the primary challenge was belittlement. The day after Huffines, who cuts a slight figure, announced, Abbott strategist Dave Carney tweeted, Can anyone remind me what the height restrictions are for 6 Flags rides?

Asked about the Carney tweet. Huffines was ready with a retort: Im tall enough, Huffines said. Tall enough to be governor.
