The ascension of Marcell Barbee | San Marcos Record – San Marcos Daily Record

It was a typical late night for Jacob Peeler and Marcell Barbee. Peeler was browsing the internet for a new wide receiver. Barbee was playing video games.

Peeler was a member of Ole Miss staff from 2017-19 and had proven himself as one of the top receivers coaches and recruiters in the nation. Three of his top wideouts are currently in the NFL: 2020 Pro Bowlers A.J. Brown and D.K. Metcalf, and 2021 second-round pick Elijah Moore.

But on Dec. 1, 2019 three days after the Rebels finished their season with a 4-8 overall record Ole Miss announced the firing of head coach Matt Luke. And on Dec. 12, Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported that Peeler would become Texas States new offensive coordinator.

Peeler said that he accepted the job the same day his wife, Tori, gave birth to their son, Grayson. Hed been tasked by Bobcats head coach Jake Spavital with finding a plug-and-play junior college receiver and began his search when he returned home with his family in Oxford, Miss.

The coach started by filtering through the stats of Mississippi schools. He moved on to California, then Kansas. It was 2 a.m. by the time Peeler began combing through Iowa and found Barbees name.

Barbee was a sophomore at Iowa Western Community College. He finished second in both receptions (3.6) and yards per game (65.5) in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference in 2019. A year earlier, as a true freshman, he finished sixth in the league averaging 48.0 yards per game.

I Googled him and found his Hudl film and fell in love with his film, Peeler said. So I remember, I followed him on Twitter and he followed me right back.

Peeler hadnt yet updated his Twitter bio that still stated he was a coach at Ole Miss. Or his header photo, which featured Brown, Metcalf and the Nasty Wideouts moniker they made famous. He sent Barbee a direct message, complimenting his film. It was 3 a.m.

Im like, Oh s--t, this is legit, Barbee said. Im excited as hell. Im treating it like its 7 a.m., Im ready to get to work. I DMed him right away and I said, Look, what do we gotta do?

Barbees only other offers came from Southern Miss and UMass. He tweeted on Nov. 7, 2019, that hed received an offer from Texas State, though it came from former wide receivers coach Ron Antoine, who was let go at the end of the season.

But now Barbee was back on the teams radar. When Peeler brought up Barbee to Spavital, the head coach was already familiar with the name. The two sides came to an agreement quickly, with Barbee announcing his commitment to the Bobcats on Dec. 22.

Barbees since become one of the top pass-catchers for the maroon and gold. He tied with former slot receiver Jeremiah Haydel for a team-high 40 receptions and also led Texas State with 584 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2020, earning a spot on the All-Sun Belt Third Team.

I think hes an unbelievable player. I think you guys got a little bit of a taste of it last year, Spavital said. I think hes really starting to be very comfortable with this team, this offense and his position where, you know, I think hes got that big playmaking ability, as you guys see. And hes gonna be a guy we feed the ball to a lot.

The 10 touchdowns are especially notable. The Pueblo, Colo., native was one of just 11 FBS players to catch double-digit TDs during the season. Of the group, Barbee was the only one to come through the JUCO ranks.

All but two of his touchdowns came inside the 20-yard line. Barbee considers himself an all-around receiver and not just a red zone threat his other two touchdowns came from 33 and 43 yards out, showcasing his burner capabilities. But hes got a unique skill set that is particularly dangerous near the end zone.

His connection with quarterbacks is a major factor. Barbee isnt just a favorite target of one signal-caller. Hes a favorite of all of them. Last year, six of his TDs came from redshirt sophomore Brady McBride and four came from junior Tyler Vitt.

Its easy to trust him, Vitt said. Thats kind of our guy down there, thats kind of our game plan. When we get down there, just kind of let him go make the play. And make it where he makes a play or nobody makes a play. And its cool because he does it a lot of the time, you know?

Barbees chemistry with Vitt formed steadily over weeks of practice after the wideout enrolled at Texas State on Aug. 1, 2020. His relationship with McBride was a bit more rushed.

Barbees apartment wasnt ready to move into when he first moved to San Marcos and he needed a place to live until he could. McBride opened his doors, offering Barbee and fellow JUCO receiver Kevin Howard to stay in his living room for a few weeks until they were settled.

That was probably one of the most rare, weird occasions Ive ever been in, Barbee said. (McBride) seemed like a cool dude when I first met him. You know, he was really, really quiet at first, he didnt want to say too much. But then he just started opening up and he started telling me just things like waking me up for practice, going over film and stuff like that.

I drove them around for, like, a month or two, so I got to know them pretty well, McBride said. Hes easy to be around, hes always gonna crack jokes.

A study done by Daniel Wilco and published by the NCAA in 2017 showed that the average Power 5 wide receiver stands at 6-foot-0.61 and 192.13 pounds. So at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and playing in a Group of 5 conference, Barbee has excellent size for his position.

He couples it with an altitudinous vertical that makes his catch radius much larger, extending beyond most defenders reach.

I always heard the stories about him And theyre all true, said redshirt freshman quarterback Ty Evans, a fellow Coloradan who went to high school an hour north of Barbee at Monument Palmer Ridge. I remember people telling me he had a basketball game and the first thing hed do is dunk from underneath the basket, not even warmed up or anything. And now knowing him, I completely believe that.

Peeler and all three QBs praised Barbees ability to go up and get it. Hes got balletic body control in the air, putting himself in good position to track the ball mid-flight and make the grab.

Being in the red zone means having less space to roam in terms of width and length. Barbee makes room by using the third dimension. Fade routes can be distinctly difficult to stop as a defensive back. A 50-50 ball is not close to being an even split against Barbee.

I feel like nine times out of 10, hes gonna come down with the ball, graduate senior safety Troy Lefeged said. You can have two people on him, three people on him and hes gonna come down with the ball somehow. I dont know how he does it, to be honest with you.

If he cant manage to find a good angle for a jump ball, Barbee has other methods of getting open, too. He credits his coaches for equipping him with a toolbelt of releases that help him get off the line of scrimmage and a step ahead of his opponents.

Hes really good at creating separation, defensive coordinator Zac Spavital said. I mean, physically, hes big and everybody wants to say thats the key to creating separation its really not. Its just, hes got great body control, he knows how to use his balance and he knows how to use leverage to his advantage.

Barbee has much higher expectations for himself in 2021. Jake Spavital and McBride both noticed him taking on a more vocal leadership role in training camp. Barbee said he feels much more confident and mentally prepared heading into his second year with the Bobcats. He was voted to the Preseason All-Sun Belt Second Team in July.

Hell get a chance to score a few more touchdowns when Texas States season officially kicks off against Baylor on Saturday at 6 p.m. inside Bobcat Stadium.

He has a chance to be one of the better, if not the best, (receivers) in this league, Peeler said. I think thats a testament to him and the work ethic and all the work hes put in.

Upwards of 62% of gas stations in Baton Rouge are empty; Ascension wants to truck in fuel – The Advocate

If you're trying to gas up your car or generator in Baton Rouge, good luck.

Most of the gas stations are without fuel due to an increase in demand driven by Hurricane Ida.

As of 5 p.m. Wednesday, 62.4% of gas stations in Baton Rouge did not have gasoline for sale, according to information from Gas Buddy, a crowdsourced mobile app. That's an increase from roughly 50% in the morning.

About 38% of stations were out of diesel in Baton Rouge.

For Joe Heck, who lives in Walker, it's been hit or miss to find gas.

"It has really turned into a scavenger hunt," said Heck, who was waiting in line Wednesday morning at a Shell station on Siegen Lane. At 8 a.m., the line at the station stretched into the busy road.

Heck brought gas cans to fill up for his generator because he's been without power since Sunday night.

Tuesday night, he waited for about an hour for gas at the RaceTrac on Perkins Road before heading home.

"The lines are horrific," he said. "It seems to me like there should be an alternate plan. But here's the thing, I'm bitching a little bit about waiting for gas, but when I get home I've got my generator. It's inconvenient, but I'm not displaced."

O'Neal Smith said he spent Tuesday night at the Shell station, waiting for gas.

Smith, who lives in Jennings, had driven to New Orleans to drop off some generators and searched for a gas station as his truck ran low. He ran out of fuel at 6:30 p.m., while he was waiting in line.

"When we turned into the parking lot, that's when they said they were out of gas," Smith said.

Dozens of vehicles were waiting for the station Wednesday morning for the pumps to get turned on. Nearly all of the pumps had plastic bags over the nozzle.

"They say they have gas (now), but I don't know," Smith said.

At some gas stations, the situation became tense between customers.

Livingston Parish officials said a person had been shot in the arm during a confrontation at a truck stop over who was next in line to buy gasoline.

Twice daily we'll send you the day's biggest headlines. Sign up today.

"That's just two people being impatient, one decided to get a gun and shoot the other one, Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard said in a radio interview this week. I know everybody wants gas, I know everybody's going through hard times and tensions are high, but at the end of the day, we've got to be patient and work together. We can't have that type of thing happening."

And in Clinton, a convenience store was shut down on Tuesday after a gas-related confrontation that involved a weapon.

Clinton Police Chief Ned Davis Jr. said officers were on duty at another convenience store late Wednesday afternoon that still had gas, to make sure it doesnt happen again.

The average price of gas in Louisiana is $2.83, and in Baton Rouge, it was $2.80, according to AAA.

"There's not a gas shortage but ample supply to go around," said Nick Chabarria, spokesperson for AAA. "What we're seeing are temporary outages and logistical issues getting gas to some of the impacted areas. Many roads have debris which prevents traffic. Gas stations aren't able to fuel and have a limited amount on hand."

Gas prices have increased by a few cents compared with last week, but AAA expects a temporary spike in prices as demand has surged.

"It just depends how long those refineries stay offline; typically with a Category 4 storm in the past, it took three weeks," Chabarria said. "We can't stress enough that panic buying is going to exacerbate the issue even more."

Unlike the cybersecurity attack which brought down the Colonial Pipeline for several days recently, the issue after a hurricane is largely lack of power.

"There's a lot more layers. The lack of power is holding up refineries from being able to get the chemicals they need to make the gas," said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at Gas Buddy. "There's a temporary supply bottleneck. ExxonMobil has plenty of gasoline in storage but the issue is getting it out on trucks, The other issue is hoarding."

On average, gas stations nationwide have enough fuel to fill up the tank of roughly 10% of the population on any given day, but when 50% of residents look to fill up that's when they run out.

In Ascension Parish, local officials are considering a fuel convoy to bring gasoline for emergency services and local residents alike.

The region has become a magnet for nearby parishes hard hit by Ida such as Livingston, St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles.

The 911 Center is running on generators and received enough diesel for 48 hours on Tuesday but it's been a challenge, said Ascension Sheriff Bobby Webre.

"We just cant get the answers (about fuel) and there are long lines at the fuel stations," he said.

Webre said his deputies would drive to Houston, if necessary to get fuel for the 911 center.

Hate crimes at highest rate in more than a decade, per FBI – Midland Daily News

On Monday, the FBI released Hate Crime Statistics, 2020, the Uniform Crime Reporting Program's latest compilation of bias-motivated incidents throughout the nation. The 2020 data, submitted by 15,136 law enforcement agencies, provide information about the offenses, victims, offenders and locations of hate crimes.

Law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports involving 7,759 criminal incidents and 10,532 related offenses as being motivated by bias toward race, ethnicity, ancestry, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender and gender identity. However, the UCR Program does not estimate offenses for the jurisdictions of agencies that did not submit reports.

The amount of hate crimes reported to the FBI increased by about 450 incidents over 2019, according to CNN. That increase coincided with a reduction in agencies reporting hate crimes than in previous years. The report shows 2020 had the highest tally of reported hate crimes since 2008, when 7,783 hate crimes were reported to the FBI.

Attacks targeting Black people rose to 2,755 from 1,930, and the number targeting Asians jumped to 274 from 161. Of the known offenders, more than half were White, according to the FBI.

"These statistics show a rise in hate crimes committed against Black and African-Americans, already the group most often victimized, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement. "Notably, they show a rise in hate crimes committed against members of the Asian-American Pacific Islander community. This also confirms what we have seen and heard through our work and from our partners."

There were 7,554 single-bias incidents involving 10,528 victims. The percent breakdown of victims (percents may not add up to 100% because of rounding) by bias type shows that 61.9% of victims were targeted because of the offenders race/ethnicity/ancestry bias, 20.5% were victimized because of the offenders sexual-orientation bias, 13.4% were targeted because of the offenders religious bias, 2.5% were targeted because of the offenders gender identity bias, 1% were victimized because of the offenders disability bias, and 0.7% were victimized because of the offenders gender bias.

There were 205 multiple-bias hate crime incidents that involved 333 victims.

The Justice Department and FBI are required by a 1990 federal law called the Hate Crime Statistics Act to publish an annual report on hate crime statistics. The annual report serves as the most comprehensive look at hate crime across the country.

Law enforcement agencies are not required to submit their data to the FBI for its annual crime report. There are more than 18,000 agencies in the United States and more than 3,000 did not submit their crime statistics in 2020, which may result in an undercount.

Of the 7,426 hate crime offenses classified as crimes against persons in 2020, 53.4% were for intimidation, 27.6% were for simple assault, and 18.1% were for aggravated assault. There were 22 murders and 19 rapes reported as hate crimes. The remaining 27 hate crime offenses were reported in the category of "other."

Of the 2,913 hate crime offenses classified as crimes against property, most (76.4%) were acts of destruction/damage/vandalism. Robbery, burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, arson, and other offenses accounted for the remaining 23.6% of crimes against property.

There were 193 additional offenses classified as crimes against society. This crime category represents societys prohibition against engaging in certain types of activity such as gambling, prostitution and drug violations. These are typically victimless crimes in which property is not the object.

In the UCR Program, the term "known offender" does not imply that the suspects identity is known; rather, the term indicates that some aspect of the suspect was identified, thus distinguishing the suspect from an unknown offender. Law enforcement agencies specify the number of offenders and, when possible, the race of the offender or offenders as a group. Beginning in 2013, law enforcement agencies began reporting whether suspects were juveniles or adults, as well as the suspects ethnicity when possible.

Of the 6,431 known offenders indicating some aspect of the suspect was identified, distinguishing the suspect from an unknown offender 55.2% were White and 20.2% were Black or African American. Other races accounted for the remaining known offenders although the race was unknown for 16.4% of offenders.

Of the 5,915 known offenders for whom ages were known, 89.1% were 18 years of age or older.

In Michigan, there were 161 reported cases of anti-Black or African American hate crimes and 30 cases of anti-gay male hate crimes. There were also 56 cases of anti-white hate crimes in the state last year. There was a total of 377 hate crimes in 2020 in the state.

Of the 453 offenses last year related to hate crimes, 189 involved intimidation, while 109 were simple assault and 52 were aggravated assault. Destruction/damage/vandalism of property accounted for another 45.

The offender's ethnicity was unknown in 289 of the 319 reports. Of the 319 reports, 206 offenders were reported as white while 66 were reported as black in Michigan in 2020. There were 136 incidents reported in a home and 56 occurred on a highway, alley, street or sidewalk.

Father and son who stole 1.7million worth of antiques from elderly widow jailed – ITV News

Watch a report by Matthew Hudson.

A father and son have been sentenced after they stole more than 1.5 million worth of oriental antique jade ornaments from an elderly widow in Bedfordshire.

Des Pickersgill and his son Gary Pikersgill took the collection of jade artefacts from the victim in Bedfordshire and then tricked an auction house into selling the items.

The pair were only caught when the woman's home was burgled sparking an insurance investigation.

Over a seven-year period, Des Pickersgill, who is 84, and his son Gary plundered a collection of valuable jade artifacts owned by a vulnerable Bedfordshire woman now in her mid-nineties.

They then brazenly sold them through the reputable London auction house Bonhams for a total of 1.7 million.

Gary Pickersgill's wife Sarah allowed her bank account to be used to launder money. Friends Kevin and Tracy Wigmore also profited from the thefts.

Items stolen included a green jade bowl which fetched a 1 million at auction and teapot which went for half a million pounds.

The five defendants were convicted of charges including theft and fraud following a six week trial at Luton Crown Court earlier this year.

The thefts came to light after the elderly woman was the victim of an unrelated burglary in which jade items were also stolen.

When the insurance company made enquiries with auction houses they discovered that some items which it had been assumed had been taken in the raid had already been sold over the previous years which suggest that they had already been stolen.

In fact Des and Gary Pickersgill had simply smuggled up to 50 artifacts out of the victim's house under their clothes between 2011 and 2018.

Fraud is often seen as a victimless crime but this case clearly shows that this is not the case and that there are victims involved.

The court heard that the victim was more concerned with the sentimental value of the items which had been collected by her late husband than their actual worth.

ITV News has decided to protect the identity of the victim of these crimes.

Today, Gary Pickersgill was handed an 8-year jail sentence, his father Des Pickersgill was sentenced for 6 years in prison and Kevin Wigmore was sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Sarah Pickergill and Tracey Wigmore were given non-custodial sentences.

8 Tips On How To Win at Blackjack – SpeedywayMedia.com

Are you an ardent blackjack lover, but not a successful player? Or are you just looking to try out your luck with a good old blackjack game, but you are not sure where to even start? Either way, youre in the right place! Take a look at these 8 tips on how to win at blackjack and get ready to gamble.

Regardless of whether you are playing in-person or online, if you do not choose the right casino, none of the tips and tricks to come that are supposed to help you win will matter. Always check the casinos background before you decide to play their blackjack, and look for all the information available, including the name of the owner or service providers, licenses, and reputation. If you are surfing the internet to find a casino site, beware that not every online casino is trustworthy and safe. Moreover, there are many scamming websites pretending to be online casinos. In order to ensure your investment wont go to waste of a frauds pocket, use software tools to check the websites credibility.

You cant play the game if you dont know the rules may be a cliche saying, but it is downright true when it comes to the game of blackjack. Many beginners, and even the more experienced players, make a common mistake of taking the rule sheets for granted. Knowing the rules by heart and being able to go back to them at any moment of the game is a prerequisite to becoming a successful blackjack player. What is also important to always bear in mind is that not every blackjack game is the same. Each variant is played by different rules, and even the smallest detail can affect the house edge. This is particularly important for online blackjack since games are provided by different software developers and therefore have different rules and house edges. Closely examine the help section of each game to ensure a complete understanding of the game and increase your chances of winning. Once you know the rules, you will be able to absorb the wisdom of the ultimate blackjack tips and get the game going.

Once you have familiarized yourself with the table rules of the game variation of your choice, is it time to put the cards on the table, figuratively and literally. You need to get to know yourself as a blackjack player before you invest more of your time and money into becoming a winner. Depending on the type of player, each strategy has advantages and disadvantages. For example, the Martingale betting strategy is meant for the fearless players, those looking to win big but are also ready to lose a lot of money. On the other hand, a conservative or basic blackjack strategy is a safer option for those not yet as self-assured of their gambling competencies. The utter idea of picking the rights strategy is to get the best winning odds at the time. Tellingly, each blackjack variation requires a different strategy for different optimal results and different type of a player. Many professional players would take years and lots of effort to hack the game, that is, learn how to play each hand with the best chances to win. However, nowadays, and with all the information we have at our disposal thanks to modern technology, you can easily search through the most optimal blackjack strategies for a specific game using one of the blackjack basic strategy calculators.

In line with finding your soulmate blackjack strategy, you should always remain grounded and remember your budget limits before raising a bet like a millionaire. Although this is not a trick to be used at the blackjack table, it is one of the most critical rules you need to adhere to as a gambler. Only when your bankroll starts to build up, you should allow yourself to slowly raise your stakes. Placing a bet that is out of your league can be detrimental both to your bank account and to your career as a blackjack player.

Blackjack insurance will be offered to you in most, if not all, blackjack games online. It refers to a side bet which is offered in cases when the dealer shows an ace, in order to ensure you are against the dealer getting a blackjack. Despite the fact that getting the insurance would potentially save you from big losses, it is not as good as it sounds. Finally, the odds of the dealer making blackjack are too small to compensate for the price of the insurance itself.

Keep your eyes on the table, your focus on the cards, and your mind on the price. Paying attention to all the possible details is the key to beat the odds.

To guess when is the right time to double down or to split is half of the games success. Even though things need to be more complicated in order for the game to be as exciting and risky as it is, there are few rules set in stone regarding this. Increasing your money on the table largely depends on doubling down. When youre given a starting hand of 11, always double down, because there is a high probability that your next card will be valued a ten and you will finish with 21. On the other hand, when the dealer shows a face or an ace, it is time to stay away from doubling down. When it comes to splitting, it is slightly more complicated. Therefore, the only splitting rule to live by is to never split pairs or 10s, 5s or 4s. For all the other combinations, you will have to refer to your blackjack charts and personal sense for gambling.

Always remain in control. If you hit the ground, take a break. If you touch the sky, also take a break. Dont let the gambling spirit take you over and affect poor decisions. In situations when you do wish to proceed in playing after the lows and the highs, make sure to establish new bankroll and limits beforehand.

What may trick many blackjack players to-be is the simplicity of the blackjack game. However, there is plenty more to it. Although it is not a complicated casino game, it requires skill and dedication in order to become good at it. With this list of tips in mind, a bit of luck, and some exercise, youll be mastering the game of blackjack in no time!

If youve ever been shot in the head by a guy in a check print suit, congratulations, youve met Chandler Bing, or Benny as his friends in New Vegas know him.

Yes, you might already be aware that the 90s funniest awkward friend was featured as the prime villain in Obsidians 2010 spin-off to the Fallout franchise: New Vegas, but you might not know this happened because he was a huge fanboy of the series.

After telling Ellen that he played so much Fallout 3 that he began to feel the pain of carpal tunnel syndrome take over, and then handing her a signed copy of the game, apparently word got to the team at Obsidian.

Obsidian was famously left to their own devices by Bethesda who didnt think much of the new addition, but with supreme writing, a few gameplay tweaks to elevate the experience and now with Chandler Muriel Bing as the main villain (that isnt a complex ideology anyway) Obsidian released what has been called the best Fallout game in the franchise.

Ah, the woman who doesnt shower, as Mila Kunis will now forever be known, was actually too busy playing World of Warcraft. The Thats 70s Show alum has expressed an addiction to the game that could only be quite cold turkey, by moving on to Call of Duty.

In a 2008 interview she told Jimmy Kimmel that at the height of her addiction she was an active member of several World of Warcraft guilds and that she even had to quit one because a fan in the guild recognized her voice.

Oh yes, Jason Bourne is a gamer. Matt Damon let his knowledge of games slip on a recent episode of Hot Ones, saying that he turned down a bunch of money to reprise his role as Americas answer to James Bond in game form.

Damon refused apparently because he wanted the game to not just be a first-person shooter, and that he wanted it to be more like Myst, a graphic adventure puzzle game rife with lore and beautiful locations.

Of course, the game was released without the voice or likeness of Damon in 2008, as a third-person shooter, thank you very much, Matt. It received average reviews, so maybe they should have listened to him.

Matt Damon is also a fan of lady luck, having been known to spend his nights as a professional poker and blackjack player. Most of Matts favourite Blackjack and poker games can be found at NewCasinos, the place where you can enjoy outstanding new casino sites.

Apparently Shazam actor Zachary Levi now has his eyes on the gaming adaption corner of Hollywood. Specifically, hes looking at two stars of the Naughty Dog development company: Uncharteds Nathan Drake and Joel from The Last of Us.

Levi told Brazilian website Cinema com Rapadura that he thought Nathan Drake would make for a very fun role, calling him the next Indiana Jones.

Unfortunately, both The Last of Us television show and the Uncharted film series have now been cast with The Red Viper of Dornes Pedro Pascal playing Joel and Marvels Spiderman, Tom Holland, playing Nathan Drake. But you never know. Maybe Ellies actor will have to drop out?

Vin Diesel is famously a gamer, and as proud of it as you can get, which always brings a chuckle when you consider his brand of muscle-bound, punch your problems away mentality his characters seem to have.

But the family-oriented Fast and Furious star is a big fan of role-playing games, be that on video games like World of Warcraft or with the tried-and-true dice in Dungeons and Dragons.

After lending his voice and likeness to two The Chronicles of Riddick games and a Fast and Furious spin-off game in 2020, he has even gone so far as to put his name as executive producer to video game Ark 2, which is a follow up to Ark: Survival Evolved, an action-adventure survival game set to be released in 2022.

He has even spearheaded a movie based on his own D&D witch hunter character called The Last Witch Hunter, with a sequel confirmed in 2020.

‘The Card Counter’ Asks Whether an Abu Ghraib Torturer Is Worthy of a Second Chance – The Daily Beast

While discussing his new film The Card Counter in an interview with Deadline, filmmaker Paul Schrader presented a paradox, both railing against the supposed insidiousness of cancel culture while decrying peoples strong aversion to personal responsibility. What I was trying to capture from this moment, he explained, is this lack of responsibility people seem to have. I didnt lie, I misspoke, I didnt touch her inappropriately, I made a mistake. Nobody is really responsible for anything.

What Schrader fails to realize is that cancel culture is most often invoked by those wishing to evade responsibility (its the culture thats toxic, not me!), and while context is indeed important, it doesnt grant you an indulgence. I am reminded of Bob Baffert, the legendary horse trainer, who blamed cancel culture when his Kentucky Derby-winning horse was found to have tested positive for steroids.

This is all, of course, germane to Schraders latest, which centers on a mysterious card counter by the name of William Tell (Oscar Isaac, more brooding than ever) who, after a ten-year stint behind bars, drifts from casino to casino across the U.S. winning small sums of money at blackjack and Texas hold em. An early sequence sees William pocket $750 counting cards at blackjack before booking a cheap motel room, removing the artwork and devices, and covering all of the furniture in white sheetsfor he is a ghost who lives an ascetic life of cards, sleep, and the occasional glass of whiskey.

Like many of Schraders antiheroes, from Taxi Drivers Travis Bickle to the eco-conscious Pastor Ernst Toller of First Reformed, William is a haunted diarist in search of absolution. And he believes hes found it in Cirk (Tye Sheridan), another lost soul whom God dealt a terrible hand. So, he hatches a plot to make things right: get staked by La Linda (Tiffany Haddish), who bankrolls a stable of card sharks; win a few high-stakes poker tournaments; pay off Cirks debts; and reunite him with his estranged mother.

It is fascinating that the aughts poker boom, ignited by Chris Moneymakers storybook win at the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event, has yet to inspire a single decent poker film (a few eye-hemorrhaging scenes in Casino Royale notwithstanding). The Card Counter wont change this, as it is far more concerned with the burden of guilt than what happens on the feltand because of this, its OK to overlook some of its slip-ups when it comes to the world of gambling, such as misdescribing prize pools, extolling roulette odds, and failing to so much as mention the importance of timely aggression in poker or what makes William such a gifted poker player in the first place other than his steely edge.

Early on in the film, we learn that William Tell is a cutesy alias; his real name is PFC William Tillich, and he served that lengthy prison sentence after he was found to have tortured detainees at Abu Ghraib prison in Baghdad. In maze-like, washed-out flashback sequences shot with a fisheye lens, we see PFC Tillich brutalizing his prisoners and giddily posing with them, a la Lynddie England (who only ended up serving a year and a half behind bars). That PFC Tillich arrived at Abu Ghraib a softer man and was hardened under the tutelage of a Major John Gordo (Willem Dafoe), a sadistic civilian contractor specializing in torture, begs the question of whether he also fell victim to a corrupting systemthough, as Tillich asserts, Nothing can justify what we did.

Schraders film poses intriguing questions about redemption and self-reproach. Given the extreme nature of Tillichs crimes, is he redeemable? Has he served his penance? Should we allow his guilt to consume him, or is he, too, worthy of a helping hand? Isaacand his beautiful head of graying hairdoes a fine job of stirring up pity for Tillich, another of Gods lonely men bearing the weight of our collective sins on his shoulders. His chemistry with Haddish, who provides another way out of his misery, is powerful, culminating in a hallucinatory stroll through a neon-lit park, captured on high by a roving drone. But The Card Counter tips its hand when, during a pool-side tte--tte with Cirk, Tillich draws a parallel between a poker player going on tilt (or becoming consumed by emotion and making a series of bad plays) to force drift, a phenomenon whereby torturers no longer see their captives as human and apply more and more pain. In what world are these two even remotely the same?

Whats the last great book you read?

The one Im reading now; Loaded: A Disarming History of the Second Amendment, by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, a history of how the United States evolved to where we are as a nation besieged by gun violence. This is not the kind of book Id usually read, but I loved her earlier book, An Indigenous Peoples History of the United States; reading it was like going back to school and gaining a new perspective of the Americas, one that retrieved the lost history of my ancestors. Im on a mission to make up for the huge gaps in my miseducation as a woman of color.

Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time?

The Nine Guardians, by Rosario Castellanos, a beautiful novel about a village on the Mexico-Guatemala border during the turbulent power shifts of the 1930s. Castellanos is one of the most brilliant writers of the last century, but when the Latin American boom in literature resounded in the United States, it was only the male voices that were heard. At this point in my life, I want to read the classics from the Americas, from Mexico, from women, from the working class, from the Indigenous communities, from everyone who hasnt been allowed to the podium before.

Describe your ideal reading experience (when, where, what, how).

I prefer reading lying down propped by a sea of pillows, like a famous grand horizontale, in bed or on the terrace, on a chaise or in a hammock, or simply on the couch; preferably on a day when no one rings the doorbell, which is almost impossible, because in Mexico, everyone rings the bell. The flower seller, the doughnut man, the water man, the sweet potato man, the knife sharpener, the woman asking to sweep your driveway, the man who was laid off his job and is looking for work as a gardener, the nice couple from the countryside with fresh tortillas and prickly pear paddles, the man who sells wool snakes to keep out the doorway drafts. I am lucky to be able to work from home and not have to ring doorbells, so I have no right to complain.

Whats your favorite book no one else has heard of?

My favorites are Gwendolyn Brookss Maud Martha and Merc Rodoredas The Time of the Doves, both books that deal with war, though the former only at the finale. Come to think of it, many of my favorite books are about women surviving or waging war Elena Poniatowskas Heres to You, Jesusa!, a melding of fiction and nonfiction about a Mexican woman warrior; Cartucho and My Mothers Hands, both memoiristic accounts by Nellie Campobello that witness war from a childs point of view; Recollections of Things to Come, a novel by Elena Garro, which documents Mexicos Cristero War of the 1920s; Tempest Over Mexico, a memoir by Rosa King, a foreigner who witnessed the key players of the Mexican Revolution; and A Woman in Berlin, a brutal memoir of the sacking of Berlin by a writer too afraid to publish under any other name but Anonymous. Except for Maud Martha and Tempest Over Mexico, they were all written in a foreign language, with some translations faring better than others. These are not your typical war stories.

FDA warns vs. unregistered food products and supplements – GMA News Online

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Saturday issued advisories to healthcare professionals and the general public against buying and consuming unregistered food products and food supplements in the market.

In five separate advisories, the FDA said the following products do not have Certificates of Product Registration:

Pursuant to the Republic Act No. 9711, otherwise known as the Food and Drug Administration Act of 2009, the manufacture, importation, exportation, sale, offering for sale, distribution, transfer, non-consumer use, promotion, advertising or sponsorship of health products without the proper authorization is prohibited, the FDA said.

The agency added that it cannot assure the products safety and quality since these have not been evaluated.

All concerned establishments are warned not to distribute, advertise, or sell the said violative food products until CPR are issued, otherwise, regulatory actions and sanctions shall be strictly pursued, it said.

It also reminded concerned establishments and the public to check for the FDA registration number of a product via the FDA Verification Portal.

The FDA also requested law enforcement agency and local government units to ensure that these products are not sold or made available in the market or areas of jurisdiction.

It also urged the Bureau of Customs to prevent the entry of unregistered imported products. KG, GMA News

The Best Apple Cider Vinegar Supplements, According to Dietitians | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Curious about apple cider vinegar? There are more than a handful of good reasons to be intrigued: It can help you lose weight, your cholesterol numbers may become lower, and your insulin response can be moderated, to name a few.

Commonly referred to as ACV, many are turning to the pungent elixir for its purported good-for-you qualities. "ACV has received significant attention recently for its numerous health benefits. Acetic acid, the active ingredient in ACV, has the potential to lower your blood sugar levels, stimulate weight loss, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels, regulate inflammation, and reduce your risk of several chronic illnesses," says Kristin Gillespie, MS, RD, LD, advisor for Exercisewithstyle.com, adding that it's also a rich source of antioxidants, which help combat oxidative damage in the body.

Lyssie Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT & Tammy Lakatos, RDN, CDN, CFT, The Nutrition Twins, founders of 21-Day Body Reboot, and members of the Eat This, Not That! Medical Expert Board also highlight that ACV "may aid in appetite suppression, weight loss, and in belly fat reduction." They add that "there's been encouraging research linking apple cider vinegar with increased nutrient absorption," but they are also sure to point out that despite all these benefits of ACV, it isn't a cure-all: "there is still no substitute for a healthy, balanced diet."

To really get the most out of any supplement, "it is important to pair them with a generally healthy diet as ACV supplements are lacking a variety of nutrients that should be obtained through your diet," adds Gillespie.

With all these benefits in mind, you're probably wondering how you can start adding this ingredient to your diet. While bottled apple cider vinegar is the most obvious and common way to do that, there are now many different types of apple cider vinegar supplements that can also serve up some similar benefits as the liquid version.

Below, check out these six amazing ways to get your ACV fix, according to dietitians. As always, consult with your doctor or nutritionist before adding a new supplement to your routine, and for more on how to eat healthy, don't miss the 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.

The oldie but goodie, folks. "If you want to consume your ACV the old-fashioned way, this is perhaps the best option. The only ingredient in the product is organic apple cider vinegar, and it contains The Mother, which is the part of it that makes the product cloudy and provides most of the health benefits," says Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, a plant-based registered dietitian and owner of Plant-Based Eats in Stamford, CT. "To get benefits from the product, you can take one tablespoon daily. I definitely wouldn't recommend taking it without food because it's so acidic," she continues, adding that she loves adding it to this homemade salad dressing recipe.

Echoing Gorin, Gillespie says her preferred ACV supplement is this product, too, and she recommends diluting it with water. "As with many foods, plain old ACV is likely better absorbed within the body than in supplement form (although there is minimal research to support this)," she says. "Additionally, diluting ACV is preferred over drinking it straight in the form of a shot because it lessens the risk of damage to tooth enamel."

If capsules are more your speed, these are among the best. "Bragg just came out with apple cider vinegar capsules, and the company did a good amount of research before creating this product that has a clinically effective dose of acetic acid in a serving size of three capsules," says Gorin, further noting that the product contains 1,200 IU vitamin D and 13 milligrams of zinc.

"What I love about these ACV gummies is that they're filled with Vitamin B12, which helps support cellular energy production in your body," says Courtney D'Angelo, MD, RD, author at Fit Healthy Momma and Goli ambassador, adding that they're also gluten-free, vegan, non-GMO, gelatin-free and only contain 1 gram of sugar per serving.

Gillespie especially likes this option for people unable to tolerate the acidic taste that comes with drinking ACV. "Goli gummies are an excellent choice for that group. Not only are they more palatable, but they also contain pomegranate and beetroot for additional antioxidants and vitamins," she says.

Melissa Mitri, MS, RD of Wellness Verge, is also a fan of these gummies for their great flavor, as well as the fact that "they contain added B-vitamins which most other brands do not contain, which can provide energy."

RELATED:The #1 Best Supplement for Energy, Says Dietitian

"These gummies are 100% organic, non-GMO, and vegan," says Mitri, highlighting the fact that this product contains "the mother," which are health-promoting bacteria present that many other brands do not have. Bonus: "They are low in sugar and contain added antioxidants," she adds.

Gillespie calls these ACV gummies a winner, and we like what we see, too. "In addition to containing apple cider vinegar, they contain added probiotics and vitamin B12 to help with your overall health," she says. "The B12 in these gummies comes from whole food sources, resulting in a higher bioavailability than that of synthetic B12 supplements," she elaborates, noting that gummy supplements often contain other (potentially unhealthy) additives and ingredients to make them more palatable but that this product is colored and flavored with natural flavoring agents like green apple, cherries, carrots, and blackcurrant.

"We like Vermont Village Organic Apple Cider Sipping Vinegar with the Mother. Since it contains the 'mother' it means it's been fermented and contains good-for-you bacteria (probiotics), protein, and enzymes that help you to produce gastric juices that aid in boosting the absorption of nutrients that tend to lessen with age," say The Nutrition Twins. "Probiotics also help with maintaining a healthy gut, healthy brain, and healthy body," they continue, adding that they also like that it's organic and that the various flavors contain anti-inflammatory ingredients like turmeric and blueberries.

"Just be sure to stick to a serving to keep sugar intake in check," they caution. Bottoms up, ACV crew.

Chris Hemsworth’s ‘Thor’ trainer says protein shakes and creatine are a waste of time if you want to build muscle and burn fat – Yahoo News

Walt Disney Studios

Workout supplements are popular but won't magically burn fat or build muscle.

Instead of spending money on supplements, focus on diet and exercise, said Chris Hemworth's personal trainer.

Good nutrition from whole foods and consistent workouts are the biggest factors in fitness, he said.

Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Chris Hemsworth is known for building muscle worthy of the God of Thunder in his role as Thor in the Marvel film series.

If you're trying to bulk up like the actor, you don't have to spend money on supplements like protein shakes to get the gains you desire, according to Luke Zocchi, Hemsworth's longtime personal trainer and friend. He most recently trained Hemsworth for his role in "Thor: Love and Thunder."

"Eating good food and having a calorie surplus are more important," Zocchi told Insider in an interview coordinated by Centr, Hemsworth's wellness app that offers 10 week programs for all skill levels based on his specific training and diet for the film.

He said the star makes most of his gains through a combination of good nutrition and a rigorous workout routine.

While some supplements have benefits for fitness and fat loss, they can be expensive and unreliable due to lack of regulation. Rather than shelling out money for pills and powders, stay consistent with a healthy diet and a focused exercise program, Zocchi recommends.

Zocchi said people over rely on products like protein shakes or creatine to build muscle and burn fat.

"People think things like protein shakes and creatine make a big difference, but that's only about 5% of the equation," Zocchi said.

Creatine, BCAAs, and similar products can give you an edge, but only if you've already nailed down the basics of eating well and working out consistently.

There's also nothing magical about protein shakes, the main advantage of which is to provide concentrated nutrients to help round out your diet if you can't get enough from whole foods.

Story continues

For Hemsworth's 4,500 calorie a day bulking plan, that can be helpful, but it's a small portion of his overall training and diet.

And for the average person who isn't eating 4,500 calories, supplements are significantly less important than high-quality food and regular gym sessions.

"It's dialing in the basics and sticking to the program to get results," Zocchi said.

It can also be difficult to know what you're getting in supplements since they don't need to be FDA approved, so products may contain fillers, unreliable doses, or ingredients not on the label.

Whether you're supplementing or not, Zocchi said no approach is going to magically make you look like Thor unless you happen to be Chris Hemsworth himself. As such, it's important to set goals that prioritize your own progress, rather than comparing yourself to a Hollywood star.

"Everyone's body is different. I do the same workouts as Chris and eat the same, and I don't look like him," he said.

Secret Side Effects of Taking Too Much Vitamin D, Says Science | Eat This Not That – Eat This, Not That

Out of all the nutrients that we need to consume, vitamin D tends to be one of the most controversial. Extensive research and expert opinions have been thrown into the mix regarding vitamin D consumption, deficiency, and if you are in need of supplementation. But rarely are people talking about taking too much vitamin D, which, thanks to supplementation, can be happening easily.

According to the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI), established by the Institute of Medicine and the Food and Nutrition Board, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin D on a daily basis is 15 micrograms per day for adults under 70, and 20 micrograms for adults older than 70.

While reaching toxic levels of vitamin D in your system is quite rare, the DRI does set a tolerable upper intake level (UL) of 100 micrograms per day for anyone over the age of 19.

To put this into perspective, a majority of vitamin D supplements on the market range between 1,000 international units (IU) to 10,000 IU, which equates between 25 micrograms to 250 micrograms per supplement.

So can this negatively affect your body if you hit over the UL amount of vitamin D needed for the day? We dove into the research behind taking too much vitamin D and the side effects you may not have known about if you supplement.

Oh, and don't worryyou can still hang out in the beautiful sunshine! Experts claim hanging in the sun won't overdo it on vitamin D in your system.

Here's what you need to know, and for even more healthy tips, be sure to read up on our list of The 7 Healthiest Foods to Eat Right Now.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that helps with calcium absorption in your body. Hence why many people say vitamin D is important to consume when you're older given the nature that calcium is a mineral that strengthens your bones. However, if you are overconsuming calcium (the DRI says between 2,000 to 2,500 milligrams UL a day depending on your age), your body could be at risk of developing hypercalcemia, according to the National Institute of Health.

Again, while reaching toxic levels of vitamin D is rare, the effects of hypercalcemia can be severe and lead to these other symptoms.

RELATED:Get even more tips straight to your inbox by signing up for our newsletter.

Nausea and vomiting are both symptoms that come with taking too much vitamin D and hypercalcemia.

Feeling fatigued? Your vitamin D supplement may be to blame. Taking too much vitamin D can result in feelings of tiredness, which also are linked to hypercalcemia.

Irritability is also a common symptom of hypercalcemia and taking too much vitamin D. If this is something you are feeling regularly while taking a vitamin D supplement, it may be time to start evaluating your vitamin D consumption and ensuring you're not overdoing it.

Lastly, one of the biggest side effects of hypercalcemia is developing kidney stones. One study published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that when the body experiences an increase in calcium (around 2,100 milligrams per day) with moderate amounts of vitamin D, the risk of developing kidney stones significantly increases. Plus, the study also shows that while hip bone density did increase for participants, the risk of hip fractures did not.

There can be many circumstances where one person may not get enough vitamin D. First, sun exposure may be limited, or even protection from the UV rays by using sunscreen can create a barrier in getting a sufficient amount of vitamin D in a day.

Second, the foods that provide vitamin D are few and far between. Eggs, fish, mushrooms, fortified soy milk, fortified orange juice, as well as fortified dairy products, are sources of vitamin D. But if you follow a plant-based diet, getting enough vitamin D from dietary intake can become complicated.

In order to get a sufficient amount of vitamin D from the sun, you need to expose your skin to sunlight twice a week for 5 to 30 minutes at the sun's strongest timesbetween 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you find that you are getting enough through dietary sources as well as semi-regular exposure to the sun, then you likely don't need supplementation at all.

However, if this is difficult for your lifestyle, talk to your doctor about your current vitamin D intake and if supplementation is neededespecially given that a true vitamin D deficiency can cause an increased risk of colon cancer, cardiovascular disease, falls at an older age (due to weaker bones), and even higher risk of mental illness.

5 Vitamins and Minerals Your Body Needs for Healthy Aging, According to an OB/GYN – Well+Good

What you body needs in terms of nutrition will change as you get older. Essential vitamins and minerals become even more crucial to your overall health and immunity.

Mary Claire Haver, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist based in Galveston, Texas, recently took to TikTok to share five nutritional elements your body craves to support healthy aging. Dr. Haver, who has studied the link between diet and menopause, names five vitamins and minerals as well as gut-healthy probiotics.

Magnesium is a mineral that promotes bone strength and protein production. It also helps to regulate blood sugar stable levels. "Older people tend to take less of it, and they're more likely to have to have long-term health conditions if they're taking any medications that lower their magnesium levels," explains Dr. Haver in the video.

If you want to increase your daily magnesium intake, look for plant-based food high in fiber, like leafy greens, lentils, legumes, and whole grains.

Here's what a dietitians says about the benefits of lentils:

In addition to supporting overall gut health, probiotics also protect against allergies, alleviate the symptoms of IBS, and can help with weight management down the line.

While you can buy probiotics as a supplement, you can easily incorporate them into your natural diet as well. Fermented foods, like kimchi and kombucha, are delicious sources of probiotics that help fight inflammation to boot. Other foods, like yogurt, soft cheeses, and tempeh are good for the gut, too.

Here's a dietitians guide to gut health:

Your body is less likely to absorb vitamin D from the sun as you get older. For some, that might mean doubling down on your daily vitamin D intake, whih Dr. Haver says helps to absorb calcium and support bone, muscle, and immunity function.

To store up that sunshine vitamin, add some vitamin D-rich foods to your diet. Egg yolks, for example, are a great source of vitamin D. Fish like sockeye salmon and tuna are good sources, too. Mushrooms, 2 percent milk, and cheese contain plenty of vitamin D.

These are a dietitian's favorite foods with vitamin D:

"With age, you're going to start losing more of this mineral than you absorb," explains Dr. Haver. "Women over 50 should get 20 percent more [calcium] than other adults."

If you're dairy free or vegan, there are plenty of other ways to up your calcium intake. Fortified alt-milks, especially coconut, rice, and almond, can have up to 450 mg of calcium per cup. Other plant-based foods, like white beans, collard greens, and figs, contain it, too.

Here's what you need to know about calcium and alternative milks:

Omega 3 fatty acids (the good fats) support brain and eye health. Dr. Haver says they can help lower the risk of Alzheimer's disease, arthritis, and impaired vision.

As for good sources of these healthy fats, oily fish, like mackerel and salmon, are some of the easiest to find. If fish doesn't float your boat, chow down on some plant-based foods like chia seeds, walnuts, and edamame for a boost of omega-3s.

What you need to know about fish oil, according to a dietitian:

Each of these vitamins and minerals are part of a healthy diet. Can you obtain them with supplements? Sure. But, according to Dr. Haver andother experts, you should first focus on nutrition with naturally rich food sources and consult your doctor before considering a supplement regimen.

Your Calcium Supplement Probably Isnt the Best Way To Reap Bone Benefits – Well+Good

Since the days when milk-mustached celebrities graced magazine pages, most of us have understood that calcium and strong bones go together like, well, milk mustaches and famous people. And for many of us, calcium supplements are a surefire way to reach our goals. Yes, we need calcium to keep our bones strongbut before you reach for calcium supplements, there are a few things to consider. Why you need calcium

In the land of calcium benefits, bone health is king. After all, calcium supports skeletal health, the National Association for Osteoperosis says. But your body actually needs the nutrient for a number of equally important functions. In addition to your bones, your heart, muscles, hormones, and nerves all require calcium to function properly.

The mineral also provides a host of benefits outside of maintaining your bodys status quo. Not only does it fend off osteoporosis, a condition that causes bones to become weak and brittle, but studies show calcium can help lower blood pressure and decrease your risk for diabetes and colon cancer.

That said, yourbody doesnt produce calcium on its own, and if you dont consume the amount you need, your body will take it from your bones, weakening them and putting you at risk for fractures.According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, women who are 50 and younger require 1,000 milligrams of calcium each day. Women 51 and older should aim for 1,200 milligrams each day. Men younger than 70 need about 1,000 milligrams, and those who are 71 and over should aim for 1,200 milligrams each day.

It might seem that calcium supplements are a simple way to ensure youre getting enough of the bone-loving nutrient, but they aren't a panacea. Even though many of us don't get enough calcium each day, supplementation is most beneficial for people being treated for osteoporosis or who are at high risk for calcium deficiency, including postmenopausal women and people who avoid dairy, the Mayo Clinic explains. But if you dont fall into one of those categories, or if youre getting a good amount of calcium through your diet, your calcium chew may not be your safest option.

Why? When it comes to calcium, more doesnt mean better. According to the National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), the absorption rate of calcium drops drastically when you consume more than you need. What happens to all the extra calcium? Research shows it accumulates in body tissues (aka soft tissue calcification), which can create a myriad of health issues including kidney stones, constipation, and heart issues, the Cleveland Clinic explains. Thats why, in addition to daily intake recommendations, calcium also comes with upper limits. According to the ODS, adults between the ages of 19 and 50 shouldn't exceed more than 2,500 milligrams per day, and older adults should cap their consumption at 2,000 milligrams.

Additionally, a 2016 report published in the Journal of the American Heart Association suggests a link between calcium supplements and an increased risk of calcium buildup in the coronary arteries. While the research shows coronary artery disease is only associated withnot caused bytaking calcium supplements, no such relationship exists when calcium is consumed through food alone.

Other studies have linked calcium supplements to an increased risk for colon polyps, kidney stones, and cardiovascular events. Although more research is needed to fully understand the risks associated with calcium supplements, its important to talk to your doctor to see if your daily calcium intake needs a supplemental boost.

The good news is you dont need supplements to get enough calcium. Most adults can meet their calcium intake through food and fortified foods depending on their current eating pattern and food preferences, says Candace ONeill, RD, a dietician with the Cleveland Clinics Executive Health Program in Florida.

If milk is what immediately comes to mind when you think calcium, its for good reason. Commonly known calcium-rich foods are dairy, such as, milk, yogurt, and cheese, says ONeill. But if your meal plans exclude dairy, she recommends fortified nut milk, tofu made with calcium, beans, canned sardines, salmon, almonds, and chia seeds.Dark leafy greens can also do the trick, but not all of them, she says. Kale, broccoli, and bok choy are standouts, but some greens, like spinach, contain calcium but it is poorly absorbed due to an antinutrient called oxalates, says ONeill.

Heres the kicker: getting enough calcium is actually a two-step process. First, you must eat foods that contain calcium, and then your body must absorb the nutrient. For optimal calcium absorption, it is important to have sufficient levels of Vitamin D, explains ONeill. And, well, Vitamin D isnt easy to get either. Only a handful of foods contain vitamin D, says ONeill. And although most people do not consume enough vitamin D, you can always try increasing your time in the sun.

Fish oil isn't just good for your heart healthit may be beneficial when it comes to reducing the appearance of cellulite, too.

"Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids, which help in blood circulation, reduce high blood pressure, and lower cholesterol. All these benefits keep the cell wall of your skin healthy. And the healthier your cell walls are, the less likely you are to develop cellulite," Henry explains.

If you're struggling with cellulite, adding some antioxidant-rich chokeberry to your regular routine might be just the thing to help.

"Chokeberries contain one of the highest levels of antioxidants and powerful phytonutrients of any fruit. It's thought that these compounds play a role in increasing microcirculation and improving cellulite," explains Rebecca Washuta, MS, CNS, LDN, founder of Happy Healthy Bites, citing a study in the Journal of Medicinal Food found that drinking chokeberry juice over a 90-day period reduced the appearance of cellulite.

Collagen isn't just beneficial in topical skincare: experts say it can also have major benefits for individuals with cellulite when taken in supplement form.

"The first supplement I would recommend taking in order to fight cellulite is collagen," says Alexandra Soare, RD, of Food on Mars. "It allows your skin to be elastic and fresh. When it comes to cellulite, this elasticity pushes the fat cells back, creating smooth skin."

NSA: We ‘don’t know when or even if’ a quantum computer will ever be able to break today’s public-key encryption – The Register

America's National Security Agency has published an FAQ about quantum cryptography, saying it does not know "when or even if" a quantum computer will ever exist to "exploit" public-key cryptography.

In the document, titled Quantum Computing and Post-Quantum Cryptography, the NSA said it "has to produce requirements today for systems that will be used for many decades in the future." With that in mind, the agency came up with some predictions [PDF] for the near future of quantum computing and their impact on encryption.

Is the NSA worried about the threat posed by a "cryptographically relevant quantum computer" (CRQC)? Apparently not too much.

"NSA does not know when or even if a quantum computer of sufficient size and power to exploit public key cryptography (a CRQC) will exist," it stated, which sounds fairly conclusive though in 2014 the agency splurged $80m looking for a quantum computer that could smash current encryption in a program titled Owning the Net, so the candor of the paper's statements is perhaps open to debate.

What the super-surveillance agency seems to be saying is that it's not a given that a CRQC capable of breaking today's public-key algorithms will ever emerge, though it wouldn't be a bad idea to consider coming up with and using new techniques that could defeat a future CRQC, should one be built.

It's almost like the NSA is dropping a not-so-subtle hint, though why it would is debatable. If it has a CRQC, or is on the path to one, it might want to warn allies, vendors, and citizens to think about using quantum-resistant technologies in case bad people develop a CRQC too. But why would the spies tip their hand so? It's all very curious.

Progress on quantum computers has been steadily made over the past few years, and while they may not ever replace our standard, classical computing, they are very effective at solving certain problems

Eric Trexler, VP of global governments at security shop Forcepoint, told The Register: "Progress on quantum computers has been steadily made over the past few years, and while they may not ever replace our standard, classical computing, they are very effective at solving certain problems. This includes public-key asymmetric cryptography, one of the two different types of cryptosystems in use today."

Public-key cryptography is what the world relies on for strong encryption, such as TLS and SSL that underpin the HTTPS standard used to help protect your browser data from third-party snooping.

In the NSA's summary, a CRQC should one ever exist "would be capable of undermining the widely deployed public key algorithms used for asymmetric key exchanges and digital signatures" and what a relief it is that no one has one of these machines yet. The post-quantum encryption industry has long sought to portray itself as an immediate threat to today's encryption, as El Reg detailed in 2019.

"The current widely used cryptography and hashing algorithms are based on certain mathematical calculations taking an impractical amount of time to solve," explained Martin Lee, a technical lead at Cisco's Talos infosec arm. "With the advent of quantum computers, we risk that these calculations will become easy to perform, and that our cryptographic software will no longer protect systems."

Given that nations and labs are working toward building crypto-busting quantum computers, the NSA said it was working on "quantum-resistant public key" algorithms for private suppliers to the US government to use, having had its Post-Quantum Standardization Effort running since 2016. However, the agency said there are no such algos that commercial vendors should adopt right now, "with the exception of stateful hash signatures for firmware."

Smart cookies will be glad to hear that the NSA considers AES-256 and SHA-384 "safe against attack by a large quantum computer."

Jason Soroko, CTO of Sectigo, a vendor that advertises "quantum safe cryptography" said the NSA report wasn't conclusive proof that current encryption algos were safe from innovation.

"Quantum computers alone do not crack public key cryptography," he said, adding that such a beast would need to execute an implementation of Shors algorithm. That algo was first described in 1994 by an MIT maths professor and allows for the calculation of prime factors of very large numbers; a vital step towards speeding up the decryption of the product of current encryption algorithms.

"Work on quantum resistant cryptographic algorithms is pushing forward based on the risk that Universal quantum computers will eventually have enough stable qubits to eventually implement Shors algorithm," continued Soroko. "I think its important to assume that innovation in both math and engineering will potentially surprise us."

While advances in cryptography are of more than merely academic interest to the infosec world, there is always the point that security (and data) breaches occur because of primarily human factors. Ransomware, currently the largest threat to enterprises, typically spreads because someone's forgotten to patch or decommission a machine on a corporate network or because somebody opens an attachment from a malicious email.

Or there's the old joke about rubber hose cryptanalysis, referring to beating the passwords out of a captured sysadmin.

Talos' Lee concluded: In a world where users will divulge their passwords in return for chocolate or in response to an enticing phishing email, the risk of quantum computers might not be our biggest threat.

A Softening Economy Will Be Buffeted By Stimulus Withdrawal And Delta-Variant Surge – Forbes

U.S. Vehicle Sales (millions)

While the story of the week was the big miss in Nonfarm Payrolls, most of the incoming data continue to be much softer than the markets or financial media let on, as they continue to ignore the implications. The chart above shows U.S. vehicle sales beginning in 2015.Note the steady sales levels until the pandemic, the climb out to just above normal, and now a renewed falloff.Sales in August were -11% lower than in July, as they fell to a 13.5 million annual rate. They were nearly 19 million in April.Could it possibly be that the helicopter money pulled demand forward?Lack of semi-conductors, you say!If so, why are used car sales also falling?

NY Fed Weekly Economic Index

Now, look at the chart of the NY Feds Weekly Economic Index.Like autos, note the big rise in April and the tail-off since. From this chart, it appears that the growth all occurred in April, causing Q2s GDP to rise 6.6%.But this index has been falling since, implying that growth has slowed since then, leading us to conclude that Q3s growth will be weaker than Q2s, and Q4s worse yet.

In past blogs, we discussed the potential impact of the Delta-variant.The impacts from it are continuing.Restaurant reservations are falling, hotels are experiencing cancellations and a lower number of room nights, and a significant number of major corporations have delayed a return to the office. The latest employment data show job losses in the retail, hospitality, and restaurant sectors.

Here is a partial list of weakening incoming data:

The Payroll Survey:Fridays Nonfarm Payrolls at +235K (Seasonally Adjusted (SA)) also disappointed the consensus view (+733K), yet another big miss on the part of the business forecasters. There wasnt much impact on the equity markets (September 3: DOW: -74.7, S&P 500: -1.5; Nasdaq NDAQ : +32.3).The Not Seasonally Adjusted (NSA) number was +312K.Our view has been, and continues to be, that the pandemic and its nuances (Delta-variant) arent seasonally adjustable. From a strictly statistical point of view, the pandemic data havent been around long enough to display seasonality and using seasonal factors from pre-pandemic data makes no sense because todays data is profoundly influenced by the pandemic (i.e., re-opening, mask mandates, supply-chain issues, government supplemental payments, school re-opening issues ). Nevertheless, the August +312K NSA number appears close enough to the +235K SA one so whats the issue for us?

The people with jobs are the ones that get paid.Over the last two months, BLS has told us that 1.288 million (SA) jobs were created (1.053 million in July (revised) and 235K in August). The NSA numbers (these are the actual job counts) for both months combined was 278K (312K for August and -34K for July).278K new payrolls is a far cry from 1.288 million.Perhaps this is why the August business surveys show employment softness!Noteworthy: the NSA data shows -64K in the retail sector, -74K in leisure/hospitality, -50K in accommodation (hotels) and -52K in restaurants. This data strongly implies that the Delta-variant has had a dramatic economic impact. We think this impact will continue at least for another few months.

Weekly Initial Claims (ICs):The weekly data are both encouraging and discouraging.Encouraging because ICs in the state programs fell from 299K to 288k (NSA) the week of August 28.ICs represent new layoffs, and they continue to inch their way toward the 200K/week level that was the pre-pandemic normal.

State Initial Claims

But it is discouraging to realize that there will be a negative economic impact in early September when millions of unemployed lose those benefits.Small business owners are payors into the state systems for their employees, but the owners, themselves, are not eligible for state unemployment benefits (only their employees). The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) programs were established early in the pandemic for these business owners. As you can see from the PUA Initial Claims chart (data from April through August), the PUA programs have struggled of late (Delta-variant?) and the weekly new claims have remained above 100K.

PUA Initial Claims

The PUA programs end the first week of September, so their demise is imminent.

Continuing Claims (CCs):While the 100K/week ICs are worrisome, the real issue is the imminent cessation of benefits for the 9.2 million Continuous Claimants (those getting benefits for more than one week) in the PUA programs.

Continuing Unemployment Claims

If such recipients have only been receiving benefits of $500/week, they are facing a reduction of $45 billion/month in household income (thats about 3% of such income).Expect a significant impact on consumption at least for the remainder of the year.

Opt-Outs vs. Opt-Ins:The tables below continue to show that the Opt-Out states (those not paying the federal $300/week supplement) have continued to outpace the Opt-Ins as far as reducing the unemployment rolls. From May 15 through August 21, Opt-Out state unemployment has fallen by more than 41% vs. under 20% for the Op-Ins.

Percentage Changes in CCs: Opt-Out vs. Opt-In States

Looking more granularly (table below), using the final data for August 14, Opt-Outs (representing 25% of the total CCs) reduced unemployment by -40K, while unemployment increased in the Opt-In states by +42K!

Relative Performance: Opt-Out States vs. Opt-In States

The preliminary data for August 21 show somewhat better performance of the Opt-Ins, as their CC count decreased only slightly more slowly than the Opt-Outs.As we have said in past blogs, we think the Opt-Ins will catch-up when the PUA programs end. And, once again, it is our belief that once those programs end, there will be a rush to find employment.

However, filling available job slots isnt an instantaneous process. There is an appointment needed, then an interview, a background check, and finally, an offer and acceptance. So, even if the majority of the 9.2 million CCs begin to look for work, it may take several months for a semblance of normality to return. And the economic implication is that there is likely to be a noticeable consumption slowdown, with retail falling at an even faster pace than we are seeing in the current emerging data.

Markets continue to ignore the signs of economic slowdown, as does the financial media.Of course, the equity markets love easy money, and slower economic growth means the Fed will stay easy longer. The bond market, on the other hand, appears to see the softness, and rates have reacted to the downside after some inflation indigestion last quarter.

Besides the existing softening signs, the rapidly approaching end of the special unemployment programs means no weekly checks for more than nine million current recipients. That is bound to have a negative impact on consumption, implying continued economic weakness in Q4.
