For species on the very brink of extinction, cloning is a loaded last resort – Mongabay.com

For many people, extinction is a term that refers to the past. Its meant for dinosaurs, woolly mammoths and so many other species only found in textbooks or on display at museums.

Extinction is an abstract concept to many people. It was to me as a kid, says Oliver Ryder, director of conservation genetics at the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

But the planet us growing less biodiverse each year. And extinction is a very real and present crisis. In September 2021, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declared 23 species to be newly extinct. And many species arent technically considered extinct because they live in captivity, even though they no longer exist in the wild. Where conventional conservation methods have stalled, there may be another option, one thats highly contentious, to pull a species back from the brink: cloning.

Right now, conventional conservation measures are struggling to keep up with the pace of the threats that face the world. Weve crippled populations to such fragmented and small sizes, says Ben Novak, lead scientist at Revive and Restore, a nonprofit organization that works to boost biodiversity through whats known as genetic rescue of endangered and extinct animals.

Biotechnologies, like cloning and gene editing, now give us a chance to accelerate the evolution of species so they can actually cope with change and survive it.

Cloning is one type of genetic rescue, an approach used to restore genetic diversity in a population and lower the risk of extinction. Today, we can clone some mammals, fish and amphibians, and potentially even marsupials, Novak says.

Often, when a species population crashes to very low levels, it undergoes a genetic bottleneck, where only a few individuals remain to pass on genes to future generations. That reduces the overall genetic diversity of the population, increasing the likelihood of inbreeding, which in turn raises the chances of offspring carrying recessive traits, further undermining the species survivability.

Where the conventional conservation methods of captive and assisted breeding are limited to working with the genetic material currently circulating within a species, cloning can reinject lost genetic diversity into the population, says Beth Shapiro, an evolutionary molecular biologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who also serves on the board of directors at Revive and Restore.

Increasing genetic diversity is likely to benefit by providing genetic fodder for natural selection, she says.

Right now, cloning is the only way to produce an actual copy of an animal from a non-reproductive cell, Novak says.

In December 2020, a team of researchers led by Revive and Restore cloned the first black-footed ferret (Mustela nigripes), which they named Elizabeth Ann. Today, all black-footed ferrets descend from only seven individuals, so every ferret is related in some way. Elizabeth Ann is a clone from a different population and has three times more genetic diversity than any other ferret alive. So if she breeds successfully, she will contribute new genetic diversity to the population.

Earlier in 2020, scientists from Revive and Restore also successfully cloned a Przewalskis horse (Equus ferus przewalskii), which they named Kurt.

Cloning cant happen unless tissues samples, like skin, are biobanked, which means theyre frozen for preservation and stored in a biorepository. As a species declines, it loses genetic diversity within the populations. Thats why its important for researchers to collect tissue samples whenever possible to leave options open for the future, Novak says.

For any species on the brink of extinction, what we can be doing right now is saving as many tissue samples as possible so that in the future if they go extinct or they get really rare we can reach into the past and get something back that weve lost, he says.

However, an animal can only be cloned if the technology already exists to breed it in captivity, because researchers need to know how to handle it and how it reproduces, Novak says. So cloning should never be aimed at replacing captive-breeding programs or nudging out other reproductive technologies, he says. But there will be different scenarios that favor different approaches.

With cloning, scientists take cells from tissues, like the skin, and a reproductive egg from a common ancestor. They remove the nucleus, the part that holds the genetic material, and then fuse the ancestor cell with the skin cell, so that the fused cell then only contains the genes from the animal theyre cloning. The fused cell is now an embryo that a surrogate will carry.

Proponents of cloning say such a method could work to revive the northern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum cottoni), a subspecies down to its last two individuals. Theres currently another project underway to save the northern white rhino, not with cloning but with stem cell technology. In this case, scientists revert cells from tissues samples to stem cells. Once they are stem cells, they have the potential to become any kind of cell, like reproductive egg and sperm cells.

The difference between cloning and stem cell technologies is that, with the latter, scientists arent making an identical copy of the donor. Instead, they are creating the circumstances so that cells can produce offspring through sexual reproduction, says the Wildlife Alliances Ryder.

There are only two northern white rhinos left in the world: Najin and her daughter, Fatu. In October 2021, Najin was retired as a potential egg donor due to age and illness, so now Fatu is the only donor left.

Experts like Ryder and Shapiro say theyre confident that one day they will successfully create a northern white rhino, but it will take a long time and there are a lot of challenges and unknowns along the way.

In mid-2021, the German government-funded initiative BioRescue announced that it had successfully created 12 northern white rhino embryos.

But still, the embryos need to be successfully transferred to a surrogate that is a common ancestor with the same gestational period. And in this case, that would be the southern white rhino (Ceratotherium simum simum).

However, there has never been a successful embryo transfer in a rhino to date, Ryder says.

Southern white rhinos also faced a population decline and subsequent genetic bottleneck due to poaching. The population crashed to as low as 30 individuals, limiting genetic diversity, before bouncing back to a population today of more than 10,000 individuals, but with much less diversity than before.

In fact, researchers at the Wildlife Alliance sequenced the 12 cell cultures that they have in their Frozen Zoo and found more genetic diversity in those 12 cultures than in the entire population of southern white rhinos, Ryder says.

So genetically, they have the potential to recover, he says. The technology just isnt there yet to make the jump from frozen embryo to live rhino calf.

Although some may argue that intervening in the evolution of plants and animals is unnatural, Shapiro points out that humans have been intervening for tens of thousands of years already. She says we shouldnt reject new technologies until the risks and potential are fully evaluated.

I think in biotechnology, sometimes we get lost in the can we do this? And the goal of an ethics analysis is to answer the question, should we do this biotechnology? says Samantha Wisely, a conservation geneticist at the University of Florida.

Wisely was a part of a team that recently published an ethics analysis of cloning as a form of genetic rescue and looked at black-footed ferrets as a case study.

The ethical analysis took into consideration whether the goals of the program are justified, whether cloning can be done responsibly, and whether theres support from the public and within the conservation community.

For the ferrets, cloning was really the only way, Wisely says. The remaining individuals were highly inbred and there were no new individuals to bring in and add to that genetic diversity.

Revive and Restores Novak points out that captive-breeding programs are already heavily managed. Animals dont get to choose who they mate with; theyre paired together based on whos related to who. With cloning, scientists are just expanding their options, he says.

The use of somatic cells, like skin cells, is also much less invasive than collecting reproductive cells, the analysis points out. Using somatic cells to create genetically identical animals has been used in the livestock industry in the U.S. for more than a decade.

And ultimately, whether or not cloning should be done as a means of genetic rescue should be considered on a case-by-case basis, Wisely says.

The way to save species is to save them in their habitats, Ryder says. But the fact that we have species going extinct means that its not being realized to the fullest extent.

An additional set of options offers the future the possibility that wouldnt otherwise have existed, he adds.

Over the next few years, Revive and Restore hopes to make more clones of Elizabeth Ann and Kurt as well as some new, unique Przewalskis horses, Novak says.

He says this also gives them an opening to use gene editing or genetic engineering. For instance, they can sequence the genomes of ferrets that died in the early 1900s and find genes that are potentially beneficial, like ones for disease resistance. Scientists can write those genes back into living ferrets, providing a genetic boost to the current population.

The technology is unfolding in real time. And its important to engage global stakeholders who will be affected by the adoption of these approaches, while the technology is still developing, Shapiro says.

The pace of change is too fast today for evolution by natural selection to keep up, she says.

If we want to live in a future that is both biodiverse and filled with people, then we have no choice but to continue to intervene as we always have in more deliberate, thoughtful, and careful ways.

Why Dolly Parton Was the Namesake for the World’s First Cloned Animal – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

In her life, Dolly Parton has been the inspiration behind a theme park, a spa, and several restaurants. Shes also the inspiration behind the name of a famous sheep. Dolly the sheep, the worlds first cloned mammal, shares Partons first name for a reason that has little to do with her musical ability. Heres why the scientists behind the cloned sheep felt that Dolly was the perfect name.

When she first began gaining notoriety for her music, Parton said the comments about her lookscould be hurtful.

In the early days, I think it used to bother me when people [made fun of me], Parton said onThe Oprah Conversation. It didnt change me. It didnt make me do it different, but I kind of get a little embarrassed sometimes if somebody made too much fun of it. That was when I knew they didnt know who all I was or what all I was.

Soon, though, she realized these comments were more a reflection on others than herself. As she grew more comfortable, she began cracking self-deprecating jokes.

All of my life, I have been known for two things. Well, not them, Parton joked, gesturing to her breasts when she was named MusiCares Person of the Year in 2019, per theIndependent. Ive also been known as a singer and songwriter too. Although Im not complaining. Ol Pancho and Leftys been pretty good to me. Everybody always expects me to do a boob joke, and I like to do that right up front.

For much of her career, Partons figure has been the subject of discussion, including by herself. In 1997, this reached new heights. Scientists at the Roslin Institute in Scotland were working to produce genetically modified livestock. As part of an experiment, they cloned a sheep via DNA from a mammary gland cell from one sheep and an unfertilized egg from another. The result was the first fully cloned mammal from adult cells.

The scientists involved in the project were thrilled to see its success and immediately knew what they had to name the animal.

Im standing next to [farm research assistant] Douglas McGavin watching the vet assist this birth, and I made an off-the-cuff remark to Douglas, research assistant John Bracken toldScientific American. I said, You know what were going to have to call this lamb? Were going to have to call it Dolly, after Dolly Parton, because the cells are derived from mammary tissue.

Though not everyone was entirely on board, they now agree the name was fitting.

Being somewhat puritanical, I might have been a bit worried, embryologist Ian Wilmut said. With hindsight, without a doubt it was a great name.

So what does Parton think of her namesake? She reflected on the late Dolly the sheep in an interview with theDaily Record.

Dolly The Sheep was very popular for a long time, but I believe she passed away, Parton said. I was told she was called after me because she had big mammary glands. She gave me a lot of competition but I heard that when they first named her they used the mammary glands for cloning and the scientist who came up with that thought he had to name her Dolly. I never met her but I always said theres no such thing as baaad publicity.

Drivers warned of surge in illegal number plate cloning as older cars look to avoid fines – Express

Many drivers have been stung by fines wrongly attributed to their cars since the introduction of clean air zones and the expansion of Londons Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ). With the number of fines increasing for drivers who have not entered the car tax zones, it has been suggested that more rogue motorists are using fake plates to cheat city centre enforcement cameras.

Bath, Birmingham and Portsmouth all launched their clean air zones last year, with some more polluting vehicles being charged a daily fee for driving in the zone.

A number of other cities are also set to launch a clean air zone this year, including Greater Manchester, Oxford, Newcastle and Edinburgh.

Some clean air zones charge older cars between 7 and 10 per day to drive inside the emissions area, whilst larger vehicles like HGVs and buses can be charged between 50 and 100.

There are fears that as more clean air zones are introduced, more fake number plates could be seen.

In 2019, the number of drivers complaining to the DVLA about correspondence, fines or penalties wrongly linked to their vehicles has more than doubled.

The DVLA had 9,384 complaints about correspondence, fines or penalties wrongly linked to vehicles in 2019, up from 4,021 in 2018.

In 2020 the figure fell to 7,400, thought to be due to traffic levels in the pandemic.

Between January 1 and July 31 last year, the latest period figures are available for, it was 4,110.

Jack Cousens, head of policy at the AA, said: With cities across the country introducing clean air zones, plate cloning could increase as fraudsters hope to cheat the charges.

A policy from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) stipulates that if a driver is stopped more than once with a plate which doesnt meet regulations, the registration should be rescinded.

In this case, the driver would be issued with a new, random number plate.

This is done so all number plates meet the UKs regulations and can be more easily identified by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras.

A quick Google search can lead drivers to find fake number plates, which could potentially be used to navigate around the charges.

There have been a number of instances where drivers have been wrongly fined for supposedly driving inside a clean air zone.

Richard Gregory-Gibbons, from Staffordshire, says a driver with the exact same car and same licence plate is frequently travelling through Birminghams CAZ zone and claims his registration plate was cloned.

This case of mistaken identity has left him inundated with penalty charge notices (PCN).

In August, he had received almost 30 letters and needed to appeal each fine individually via the councils website.

He received six letters in just one day three of which were for bus lane fines and one warning letter from the clean air zone.

Another driver, Ruth Costello from West Sussex, said she had been receiving the 120 penalty charge notices (PCNs) since the launch of Birminghams CAZ in June.

The motorist, who lives 160 miles away from Birmingham, received 19 fines totalling 2,280, despite having never driven in the city.

In a First, Man Receives a Heart From a Genetically Altered Pig – The New York Times

It was either die or do this transplant, Mr. Bennett said before the surgery, according to officials at the University of Maryland Medical Center. I want to live. I know its a shot in the dark, but its my last choice.

Dr. Griffith said he first broached the experimental treatment in mid-December, a memorable and pretty strange conversation.

I said, We cant give you a human heart; you dont qualify. But maybe we can use one from an animal, a pig, Dr. Griffith recalled. Its never been done before, but we think we can do it.

I wasnt sure he was understanding me, Dr. Griffith added. Then he said, Well, will I oink?

Xenotransplantation, the process of grafting or transplanting organs or tissues from animals to humans, has a long history. Efforts to use the blood and skin of animals go back hundreds of years.

In the 1960s, chimpanzee kidneys were transplanted into some human patients, but the longest a recipient lived was nine months. In 1983, a baboon heart was transplanted into an infant known as Baby Fae, but she died 20 days later.

Pigs offer advantages over primates for organ procurements, because they are easier to raise and achieve adult human size in six months. Pig heart valves are routinely transplanted into humans, and some patients with diabetes have received porcine pancreas cells. Pig skin has also been used as a temporary graft for burn patients.

Two newer technologies gene editing and cloning have yielded genetically altered pig organs less likely to be rejected by humans. Pig hearts have been transplanted successfully into baboons by Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin, a professor of surgery at University of Maryland School of Medicine who established the cardiac xenotransplantation program with Dr. Griffith and is its scientific director. But safety concerns and fear of setting off a dangerous immune response that can be life-threatening precluded their use in humans until recently.

Man City star James McAtee, 19 related to England 1966 hero Alan Ball was spotted by Guardiola BEFORE h… – The Sun

PEP GUARDIOLA knows talent when he sees it.

Before the Manchester City boss took over the Etihad, he secretly visited their youth academy and spied on a 13-year-old James McAtee.

8

Wowed by what he saw, he immediately turned to his coaches with a question.

"Who's that?" the maestro manager enquired nodding towards the bright talent.

Some six years later, Pep handed the midfielder his full debut.

However, instead of wearing blue the teenaged, dubbed a David Silva clone by Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, could have been playing in red for crosstown rivals Manchester United.

Before he hit his teens. McAtee trained with the Red Devils aged 11.

Alongside older brother John, now a pro at Grimsby Town, he had someone to look up to as he learned his craft.

But, when John was released by the club the family made the decision to also pull James out of their academy.

City immediately pounced, sensing the prospect's ability from an early age, as well as a sporting heritage that runs through his family.

His dad, also John, played rugby league for St Helen's.

While mum Gill's uncle was England World Cup winner Alan Ball.

Since his cross-city move, James McAtee hasn't looked back as he's climbed through the youth ranks.

This season, he's starred for the U23's this season - scoring 12 goals in 13 games.

That prompted Guardiola to hand him his first senior debut against Wycombe in the EFL Cup back in September.

Then in November, he made an impressive cameo against Everton for his first Premier League appearance.

8

8

8

Dubbed 'Salford Silva' by his team mates, McAtee boasts similar characteristics to the legend from Grand Canaria who played for the club for 10 years.

Some of those skills, his close control, nimble feet, and constant probing of opposition defences were on display against the Toffees, which saw ex-Manchester United star Gary Neville wax lyrical about the boy wonder.

"Its not an academy, its a cloning system," Neville said after seeing McAtee and Cole Palmer impress.

"Theyre like clones, theyre all the same.

"Its almost likeDavid Silvas left them all behind!"

It's a reason why Guardiola was so quick to find out who he was back in 2016.

And something he also did with Phil Foden, who has become the beacon for youngsters to emulate at the Etihad.

8

8

However, as his McAtee's ambition - he won't rest on making the odd FA Cup or League Cup appearance.

Several clubs have reportedly declared their interest in taking the youngster on loan, including Premier League Southampton and promotion-chasing AFC Bournemouth.

But, it is believed City are unsure about letting him go elsewhere. They share a theory that his development would be best served training with first team stars.

Although, with his contract expiring in 2023, there is a fear that McAtee could leave the club for good.

Astonishingly, Manchester United have been linked with taking him back.

Could it be that McAtee ends up strutting his stuff at the Theatre of Dreams? Whatever the stage, he appears ready for a starring role.

4 people killed in wrong-way crash that shut down traffic on I-15 south of Las Vegas – KTNV Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) Four people died Monday night in a wrong-way crash on Interstate 15 south of Las Vegas, according to the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol.

The collision happened when a Cadillac headed northbound in the southbound lanes crashed head-on into a Toyota pickup truck. The truck caught fire, killing all three people inside, officials said.

The driver of the Cadillac, an adult female, was also killed. Officials said they believe she may have been driving under the influence of alcohol.

Three vehicles swerved to avoid the head-on crash, including a semi-truck. Two people from those vehicles were hospitalized, officials said.

Southbound traffic was shut down at Sloan, approximately 18 miles southwest of Las Vegas, where drivers were being diverted off the interstate. Drivers were directed to access Las Vegas Boulevard to head southbound from there.

As of 10 p.m. Monday, drivers should expect southbound lanes to remain shut down in the area for approximately 5 hours, NSP said.

Nevada State Police officials noted this crash marks the first wrong-way fatalites in Southern Nevada this year.

Las Vegas mother pleads guilty by reason of insanity to 3-month-old sons death – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) A mother who investigators said killed her 3-month-old son by throwing him from a staircase pleaded guilty by reason of insanity in court Friday.

Xin Liu killed her son, Stanley Shah, on Sept. 1, 2020, at a home near Desert Inn and Fort Apache roads, police said.

Liu pleaded guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter by reason of insanity and child abuse, according to a court spokesperson.

The Clark County Coroner had said Stanley had a squishy skull with crepitus, meaning the baby had multiple skull fractures.

According to the initial arrest report, a woman had called 911 saying Liu had intentionally dropped her baby from the second floor of a home to the first floor and that the baby was not breathing.

Family members told police Liu suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts of killing Stanley and herself. The report said they tried to get her help and even hired a nanny to watch the baby.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for May.

Best Road Trips From Las Vegas: Weekend Getaways to Visit by Car – Thrillist

Dixie National Forest | Photo by Hage Photo

Dixie National Forest | Photo by Hage Photo

There are certain advantages to living in the middle of the desert during winter. You've got great scenery, the temperatures are mild, and there's no chance of getting stuck in the snow during an overnight traffic jam. That means you're free and clear to leave the bright lights of Las Vegas and hit the highway for a road trip and weekend getaway. From ski destinations to quirky desert towns and everything else in between, the following towns and cities are calling your name for a quick and easy vacation.

Editors note: Information listed here may be subject to change depending on the developing situation with COVID-19's Omicron variant. Please check for the latest updates available or contact each establishment directly for more information.

Phoenix, Arizona

Distance from Vegas: 4 hours, 30 minutesIt's the perfect time of year to exchange one big city for another. Both Las Vegas and Phoenix are known for dry desert heat in the summer, but Arizona's largest destination has a slightly less miserable winter season. So drive south and check out everything Phoenix has to offer. The grid-like street system is easy to navigate, especially when exploring the awesome new downtown restaurants that opened last year. Make sure to stop by the Pemberton, a mixed-use space for outdoor drinking, dining, art, and shopping. Old favorites deserve your attention as well, including Chris Bianco's iconic Pizzeria Bianco, which isn't just one of the best pizza joints in Phoenix, but in the entire country. Mill Avenue in Tempe (near Arizona State) continues to have a reputation for entertainment, restaurants, and nightlife, but don't overlook the growing party scene in downtown Gilbert. Prefer something more serene? Take advantage of the mild temperatures and hike Camelback Mountain (named after its hump-like peak) with sweeping views of the city as your reward.Find an amazing Airbnb near Phoenix

Ogden, Utah

Distance from Vegas: 6 hours, 30 minutesOgden is an enticing ski destination for road warriors looking for an engaging winter escape. The town, just north of Salt Lake City, is a hub for three ski resortsPowder Mountain, Snowbasin, and Nordic Valleyand is often compared to what Park City was like 50 years ago. Translation: it's overloaded with charm without being completely overrun by tourists. Ogden has a fascinating history of mob activity, crime, and speakeasies, which thrived during the Prohibition era while the rest of the squeaky-clean state went in the opposite direction. Today, Ogden has transformed into a family-friendly destination, but continues to relish its own distinct identity as the most diverse city in Utah with compelling arts, drinking, and dining scenes. Spend plenty of time at the art galleries and live music venues on 25th Street to balance out all those hours on the slopes.Find an amazing Airbnb near Ogden

Tonopah, Nevada

Distance from Vegas: Three hoursWith Omicron on the rise, getting lost in the desolate central regions of Nevada may have more appeal than usual. Camping out near one of the state's many historic ghost towns probably isn't the answer, so find the right balance with a visit to Tonopah. The small town has two very different overnight accommodations to choose from: a creepy Clown Motel (next door to a cemetery) or the historic Mizpah Hotel. Both places are said to be haunted. Just make sure to visit the Tonopah Historic Mining Park (an outdoor museum dedicated to Nevada's gold and silver rush) and load up on beer and barbecue at Tonopah Brewing Company. Yet half the fun of visiting is the road trip itself. Stop along the way in Goldfield, often described as a "living" ghost town with historic Old West architecture and the International Car Forest, a bizarre art installation of beat-up automobiles sticking out of the ground.Find an amazing Airbnb near Tonopah

Cedar City, Utah

Distance from Vegas: 2 hour, 45 minutesCedar City is an ideal jumping-off point for exploring the great outdoors in Southwest Utah. The largest town in Iron County is close to Brian Head, one of the most convenient ski resorts to Las Vegas with a high elevation that ushers in the season quickly. Drive through the scenery of Dixie National Forest to reach the colorful cliffs and sweeping views of the Cedar Breaks National Monument. Hikers also love the Kanarra Creek Slot Canyon, which leads to two waterfalls. Cedar City itself has a college town vibe (thanks to the presence of Southern Utah University) and calls itself "Festival City, U.S.A." due to its schedule of big events, although you'll have to wait until summer for the Utah Shakespeare Festival.Find an amazing Airbnb nearCedar City

Tecopa, California

Distance from Vegas: 1 hour, 30 minutesThe heat and bugs in Tecopa are unbearable during the summer, but once the temperatures drop in fall and winter, it's a perfect time to check out the quirkiness of this tiny California destination. Just outside Death Valley, Tecopa isn't quite a ghost town, but you'll see signs of its history as an old supply route and railroad community. Just take a peek inside the bars of a rundown jail. Las Vegans come here to disconnect. There's no cellphone service and hardly any landlines. It has the most breweries per capita in the United Statesas long as you understand it's two breweries for about 60 people. Tecopa Brewing Company has killer BBQ. Death Valley Brewing is next to Steaks and Beer, which serves charred ribeyes and local organic sides (with no website or social media). Yet the most popular attractions in Tecopa are the natural hot springs at two resorts (Delight's and Tecopa Hot Springs) and the China Ranch Date Farm, home to a small museum and bakery.Find an amazing Airbnb near Tecopa

Beatty, Nevada

Distance from Vegas: 1 hour, 45 minutesAt first glance, there doesn't seem like there's much going on in Beatty. Sure, the chili at the Happy Burro is a must-try and the Sourdough Saloon is good for a stiff drink, but the old railroad town is a great starting point for a drive through Death Valley National Parkmuch more bearable this time of year after the scorching heat of summer. Drive in deep enough, and you'll reach Badwater Basin, the lowest, driest, hottest point in North America. You'll also stumble across otherworldly rock formations, sand dunes, Star Wars filming locations, and the salt formations left behind by an evaporated lake at Devil's Golf Course. Aside from Death Valley, Beatty is close to the ghost town ruins of Rhyolite and the weirdness of the Goldwell Open Air Museum. With a travel time of less than two hours, Beatty is a great day trip from Vegas, but if you want to spend the night, check out the renovated rooms at the Stagecoach Hotel & Casino.Find an amazing Airbnb near Beatty

Mt. Charleston, Nevada

Distance from Vegas: One hourHere's a road trip that's quick and easy, but still feels a world away from Las Vegas. Mt. Charleston, the highest peak in the Spring Mountains, is just northwest of Sin City. The elevation is a welcome change of pace from the desert valley floor any time of year, but the colder months are when business picks up. The Lee Canyon ski and snowboard resort is in peak season with chair lifts providing gorgeous views of the surrounding Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. The loss of Mt. Charleston Lodge in a recent fire hit the community hard, but plans are already in the works to build the restaurant back better than ever in 2022. Its on-site cabin rentals were unaffected. You can also book a room at the Retreat on Charleston Peak (formerly the Resort on Mt. Charleston), which has a bar and restaurant.Find an amazing Airbnb near Mt. Charleston

Sedona, Arizona

Distance from Vegas: 4 hours, 30 minutesThe winter months are perfect for visiting Sedona. It's far less busy and crowded, allowing you to social distance to the fullest with more than 300 miles of hiking and biking trails. Sedona is known for its Native American history, bed-and-breakfast accommodations, and art galleries. The town also carries a certain sense of mysticismsaid to be in a vortex with the energy of nature especially strong in four locations: Airport Mesa, Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, and Boynton Canyonall easy to reach without shelling out cash for a tour guide. Just south of Sedona is the Verde Valley, where the old mining towns of Cornville, Cottonwood, Clarkdale, and Jerome each have their own charm and character. Follow the "wine trail" with 25 tasting rooms between them.Find an amazing Airbnb near Sedona

Laughlin, Nevada

Distance from Vegas: 1 hour, 30 minutesDescribing Laughlin as a mini-Vegas on a river isn't entirely off base. Both townsless than a hundred miles apartare famous for casinos, entertainment, and bright neon lights. But Laughlin is less chaotic, with a small town feel and employees who actually do recognize regulars by name year after year. The dining and nightlife is lowkey and low pressure. Yet the character of the town is best shaped by its location along the Colorado River, which separates Nevada from Arizona. Aside from a few outdoor concerts at the Laughlin Event Center, the town gets a little more quiet in the winter. Not much action on the river, but you can still take water taxis from one hotel to another and board guided boat tours and dinner cruises. The drop in temperatures makes hiking a little easier, especially beyond Christmas Tree Pass at Grapevine Canyon, where you can explore a dried river bed and examine petroglyphsdrawings on stone walls left behind by Native American tribes hundreds of years ago.Find an amazing Airbnb near Laughlin

Distance from Vegas: 4 hoursWhile the Grand Canyon is often associated with summertime family vacations, the largest hole in America takes on an engaging mystique when sprinkled with snow during the winter months. It's easiest to visit from Las Vegas by helicopter, although the bumpy four-hour road trip to the West Rim is considerably less expensive. It also allows you to explore on your own time frame, whether learning about the Hualapai Tribe's Indigenous history or sticking around to stargaze after the sun goes down. No visit is complete without testing your anxiety on the Skywalka bridge with a see-through bottom that hangs over the edge of the canyon. Spend the night in your own cabin or glamping tent.Find an amazing Airbnb near the Grand Canyon

Distance from Vegas: 4 hoursWhen someone says road trip and Las Vegas, in the same sentence, nine times out of ten, they're talking about Southern California. So hop in your car and start driving southwest on Interstate 15. Youll hit Baker (stop for gas), Barstow (stop for Starbucks), San Bernardino (keep going) and finally, Los Angeles. But what makes the trip worth the drive is going all the way to Santa Monica to finally see the coast. Of course, you can always play tourist in Hollywood, check out the L.A. restaurant scene, or just see what's going on over the weekend. Half the fun in driving to SoCal is seeing all the weird roadside attractions along the way, like the World's Tallest Thermometer or Lake Dolores (a creepy abandoned water park that will give any ghost town a run for its money).Find an amazing Airbnb near LA

Distance from Vegas: 45 minutesA quick drive from Vegas, Boulder City is the closest town to the Hoover Dam and has a small tourism industry based around the engineering masterpiece. (Tours are on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic, but outdoor viewing areas recently reopened. So check in for the latest details before visiting.) Boulder City is also one of the few Nevada communities where gambling is illegal. So if you need a fix, stop while driving down on U.S. 93 and play a few slots at the Hoover Dam Lodge. However, the casino-free Boulder Dam Hotel (with a Hoover Dam museum in the lobby) offers a more satisfying sense of history. Boulder City is a great homebase for hitting the water at Lake Mead, although experienced hikers may prefer to trek through Gold Strike Canyon to reach the hot springs near the Colorado River (which were closed during summer, but are now back open for the milder seasons). For outdoor fun, hang out with the bighorn sheep at Hemenway Park or grab a seat on the patio at Milo's Cellar for wine, the Dillenger for burgers, or Jack's Place to drink a beer and watch a game.Find an amazing Airbnb nearBoulder City

Distance from Vegas: 1 hour, 30 minutesMesquite, about 95 miles northeast of Las Vegas, tends to market itself as a more laid-back alternative to Sin City, but it's really a casino town for the party animals who live right across the border in Utah. A vintage vibe is felt in the tableside food presentations at Katherine's Steakhouse or the seven golf courses squeezed within a few miles of each other. Interact with exotic animals at Camel Safari or go off-roading with an ATV. Yet half the fun of a road trip to Mesquite is getting there. Detour off Interstate 15 and take one of America's most scenic drives through the Valley of Fire State Park before reconnecting later. The bright, dramatic sandstone formations almost appear to be on fire when the sun hits them just right. Hence the name. The red sand at Rainbow Vista creates a life-on-Mars feel, so it's no wonder parts of Total Recall were filmed there back in the 80s.Find an amazing Airbnb nearMesquite

Distance from Vegas: 7 hoursDespite its proximity to Reno, Lake Tahoe is deserving of a road trip all by itself. After a summer full of boating and watersports, the largest alpine lake in North America eagerly shifts into winter-mode with the largest concentration of ski resorts in North America. Much of South Lake Tahoe is built around the Heavenly ski resort with a gondola taking guests up the mountain from Heavenly Villagea shopping, dining and entertainment district by the main road. North Lake Tahoe is more residential, especially Incline Village, where exclusivity is part of the charm. The best way to play tourist is by booking a room at the Hyatt Regency, which feels like the world's largest log cabin with a private beach and fire pits by the pool for roasting s'mores. Skiers will be more interested in the nearby slopes of Mt. Rose or Diamond Peak. Royal Gorge is the largest cross country ski resort in the United States, although you may be happy to just snowshoe in Chickadee Ridge in Tahoe Meadows, where you can bring birdseed and let chickadees eat straight from your hand.Find an amazing Airbnb nearLake Tahoe

St. George, Utah

Distance from Vegas: Two hoursSt. George is the first place Las Vegans run into after cutting through the northwest corner of Arizona and crossing the border into Utah. The city combines a charming downtown area with a thriving art scene, and proximity to four state parksincluding the bright red sandy beaches of the Sand Hollow reservoir. But outdoor explorers will be most excited to know St. George is the largest city outside Zion National Park, and one of the most colorful examples of rock formations, sweeping cliffs, and waterfalls in Utah. The infamous Angels Landing is a 2.5-mile hike with steep and narrow pathways. It comes with a warning sign that mentions the number of people who have died on the trail, just make sure to apply for passes, which are available via a lottery system until January 20. Balance out all that outdoorsy stuff with the independent restaurants, art galleries, and shopping of downtown St. George. The Painted Pony and Wood.Ash.Rye. are the top spots for dinner and drinks.Find an amazing Airbnb near St. George

Justin Herbert after OT loss to Las Vegas Raiders: I had never been rooting for a tie more in my life – OregonLive

The Los Angeles Chargers entered Sunday night with a simple mission: Win or tie against the Las Vegas Raiders and make the NFL playoffs. Neither of those outcomes happened, as the Raiders kicked a game-winning field goal in overtime as time expired to end the Chargers season. The Raiders are in, instead.

I had never been rooting for a tie more in my life, Chargers star quarterback Justin Herbert said in his press conference after the game. Thats the unfortunate part of being so close.

The Chargers trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter before bolting back (pun intended) with two touchdown passes from Herbert, including one from the former Oregon Ducks star to wide receiver Mike Williams as time expired in regulation, to tie the game and force overtime.

Each team hit field goals in overtime. The Raiders had the option to play for a tie or go for the win. A tie would have sent both teams to the playoffs and left the Pittsburgh Steelers out.

But after a 7-yard run from running back Josh Jacobs, Chargers head coach Brandon Staley called a timeout with 38 seconds left in overtime. The timeout from the first-year head coach sparked a whirlwind of discussion on social media. Staley said after the game he called it to get the right grouping in on defense to stop the run.

The Raiders responded with a 10-yard run from Jacobs after the timeout, which set up the game-winning 47-yard field goal from kicker Daniel Carlson.

NBC cameras caught Herbert mentioning a tie on the sideline in the middle of the chaos. In the video below, you can see him say, Ive never wanted a tie so bad right after the timeout.

In the end, the timeout didnt burn the Chargers. They couldnt stop the run and it hurt them Sunday. Jacobs finished the game with 132 yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.

Raiders Will Be Without Key Defensive Lineman In Wild Card Matchup Against Bengals – Sports Illustrated

CINCINNATI Raiders defensive tackle Darius Philon suffered a torn patellar tendon on Sunday against the Chargers and will miss the rest of the season according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Philon was a key piece of Las Vegas' defense. He had four tackles (one for loss) and one pass defensed against the Chargers.

Everyone knows about edge rushers Maxx Crosby and Yannick Ngakoue, but Philon could made things tough on the interior of the Bengals' offensive line, which has been a weakness this season.

He had 27 tackles (five for loss), two quarterback hits and two sacks this season.

The prettiest new restaurants that opened in Las Vegas in 2021 – Eater Vegas

Local restaurants and bars alike debuted beautiful new spaces in Las Vegas over the past year, and many embraced original artwork and murals to anchor them. Restaurants found ways to incorporate trees indoors, pay homage to the Amalfi Coast, and even add some plants in the form of cacti, whether live or on the wallpaper. Creative uses of LED remained a powerful Vegas motif, as did lush colors and fabrics for chair and banquette design. Read on to see some of the prettiest new restaurants to open in Las Vegas in 2021, both on and off the Strip.

Opened: February 2021

The Look: Emporium Arcade Bar opened at Area15 in February filled with two floors of classic arcade favorites, pool tables, pinball, foosball, basketball, and more spread over 10,000 square feet. Co-founder Daniel Marks tapped local art consultancy Unravel Artistic Consulting to bring on 13 artists, mostly from Las Vegas, to decorate the space with murals. Works feature UNLV students Brian Martinez, Sam Rose, and Sonny Tsoi, as well as UNLV graduate Chris Mempin and adjunct professor Erik Beehn. Other Las Vegas artists include Pasheone, Krie, Cerissa Lopez, Mr. Gums, Bronson Taylor, and JW Caldwell. Two notable non-local artists, Allison Bamcat and Rif Raf Giraffe, also have work at the venue.

Opened: March

The Look: The new 9,000-square-foot steakhouse at Virgin Hotels practically blends into the casino floor with an inviting open entrance, dreamy lighting in the lounge that morphs colors through the night, and a handsome dining room with distinctly feminine touches to give it a whimsical air. One Steakhouse features a stunning LED light over the lounge with more than 3,000 pieces of glass that gradually change from white to pink to purple and more. The dining room melds handsome woods with whimsical pieces of art, including cloches with mystical pieces inside.

The Dramatic Lights Inside One Steakhouse Will Keep Diners Mesmerized for Hours

Opened: May

The Look: Celebrity chef Bobby Flays Italian seafood restaurant at Caesars Palace takes its inspiration from his trips to the Amalfi Coast. The restaurant, Amalfi by Bobby Flay, spans 9,000 square feet right off the casino floor. Flay tapped Olivia Jane Design & Interiors to create the look of Amalfi with a natural palette and touches of greenery throughout. Organic fabrics, stone, and wood materials decorate the four spaces inside. Flays favorite touch, though, is the 30-seat bar and 40-seat lounge area that practically glow with a limestone mosaic floor and teak wood beams. Dont miss the Amalfi Coast-inspired blue and white chairs in the lounge, which are a nod to the swarms of striped umbrellas and chairs sprawled across the beaches there, he says.

Opened: June

The Look: Stadia Bar at Caesars Palace pays homage to basketball, football, and baseball with room for 120 in a 2,186-square-foot space designed by Rockwell Group. The floor uses recycled basketball court wood, while five VIP domes come wrapped in leather that looks like a vintage leather football helmet. The domes are lined with a metal mesh and artwork by San Francisco-based artist and mural painter Apexer. Other sports-inspired design details include net-like chandeliers, sconces that look like deconstructed baseballs, and glove-like leather banquettes.

Opened: June

The Look: Brezza, Italian for breeze, embraces that ambiance with a patio with room for 100 overlooking the Las Vegas Strip at Resorts World. The restaurant features mosaic tile flooring imported from Italy and olive trees on the terrace salvaged from the Stardust, which once stood on this spot. Inside, the restaurant features rustic stone walls and floor-to-ceiling windows with views from the 200-seat main dining room. A small patio at the indoor entrance offers a prime view for people-watching.

Opened: June

The Look: Celebrated Los Angeles chef Ray Garcias Mexican restaurant Viva! at Resorts World used Celano Design Studio to create the look of the space in conjunction with local architect Marnell Companies. A large mural by artists Chalk & Brush anchors the indoor patio, while outside, diners can sit on the people-watching patio that overlooks Las Vegas Boulevard. Some of the beautiful touches to the space include an exploding flower infinity mirror that doubles as an art installation. Behind the main bar sits a bottle display influenced by the architecture of ancient ruins around Mexico. Anchoring the dining room, a dazzling driftwood sculpture resembling a tree in bloom. On the indoor patio, a vibrant mural designed by Miami-based Chalk & Brush, inspired by the culture, landscape, architecture, and patterns of Mexico, acts as a backdrop for the bar. A private dining room showcases Viva!s exclusive tequila and mezcal collection.

Opened: July

The Look: One of the most anticipated restaurant openings of 2021 offers a stunning design that transports diners to an opulent 1950s supper club. Delilah, from L.A.s H.wood Group at Wynn Las Vegas and Eater Vegass Eater Award winner for design of the year, brings a decadent supper club that tips its hat to the golden era of entertainment and dining. Todd-Avery Lenahan, president and chief creative officer of Wynn Design & Development, created the look of Delilah, taking cues from the original location in Los Angeles, regal supper clubs of the past, and a safari trip to Africa. At the front, Little Bubble Bar, a 34-seat intimate lounge with settees upholstered in vintage Herms fabric. A sweeping set of staircases adorned with bronze sculptures that were commissioned for Delilah funnel down to the Anchor Bar with its view of the stage, brass palms trees, and vintage feel. Overhead, the ceilings use more than 30 hand-finished plaster molding segments. Seating uses embossed silk velvets, French linens from Pierre Frey and Hermes Rich, piano-finish walnut burl with ebony inlay on the walls, and more than three dozen commissioned paintings and sculptures along with vintage cubist works from around the world. Outdoor courtyards use lanterns for lighting and 75-year-old magnolia trees.

Opened: July

The Look: Money, Baby! at Virgin Hotels combines a sportsbook with food from Food Network star and culinary director chef Beau MacMillan and an experience courtesy of industry veterans and co-founders Justin Massei and Mikis Troyan of Clive Collective. Davis Ink created the look of the 15,000-square-foot space that serves as an adult playground with a mid-century modern style. Customers walk through a tunnel adorned with hexagon lights before reaching a magical pink tree forest with custom cutout leaves, happy face graffiti, funky geometric fencing, and a graphic ceiling. The space features a 5,500-square-foot patio overlooking the propertys resort pools. Diners can play cornhole and lawn games or sit by the firepits.

Opened: August

The Look: Restaurateur Tony Nguyen and chef Louross Edralin, who appeared on Season 4 of Hells Kitchen, offer vegetarian dishes at Chinatowns Saffron. The atmosphere brings together serenity and stability in the 90-seat dining room with a private dining area. The Look: Jeffrey Weiss transformed Valencian Gold into a posh Spanish tapas restaurant filled with ornate gold features and vintage accents. He stokes the fires with holm oak, almond, and orange woods ignited by a rifle-shaped flamethrower for the restaurants paella. Artists from Las Vegas-based ISI Group and Valencian street artist Xolaka, a notable muralist who traveled from Spain to Las Vegas just for the commission, created the murals. Diners can find the visage of Salvador Dal through, along with paella pan art by local Las Vegas artist MoreEnvyOne.

The Look: Peyote, a 2021 opening in Downtown Las Vegas from Corner Bar Management, brings a laid-back vibe, desert modernism, and pastel pops of color that seem like theyre right out of a psychedelic version of Coachella-esque Southern California. The patio comes dotted with more than 200 cactus and succulents, light mint green tables, bubblegum pink chairs, and the centerpiece: a firepit surrounded by a semi-circle of pink seating and wooden Adirondack chairs. A custom 3D-mapped LED bistro-light installation created by San Francisco-based artist Keegan Arthur Olton brings the patio to life by night. Inside, the 3,400-square-foot interior brings together a neon sign that says, Youre a daisy if you do, a fashionable phrase that dates back to the late 1870s. An eclectic collection of paintings from artists such as Brazilian artist Rafael Silveira and French contemporary artist Bruno Pontiroli decorate the walls with a cyclops carrying a woman, a hippo practically swallowing a person, a blank mans face with a pink flamingo, a tree with parrots, a woman with blue hair and flowers on her face, and more. More boxes with succulents, floral displays, a mosaic tile under the bar, exposed vents, and metal and wood stools outfit the space.

Opened: September

The Look: Walking through Superfrico feels like a trip to a museum. The new Italian-American restaurant at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas combines the wit of Opium, the show next door from Spiegelworld, and the imagination of a supper club. Art consultant Heather Harmon worked with Superfricos creative team to expand Spiegelworlds art collection and fill the restaurants walls, reflecting the companys circus roots and its passion for handcrafted, repurposed, and one-of-a-kind works. Inside the Artery, a collection of art includes Adehla Lees Psycho Pop Party, a candy-colored acrylic painting and the first work to be commissioned for Superfrico. Paranormal Activity by Tiza serves as a neon companion piece to the Purple Lodge, the Twin Peaks/Lynchian-inspired entrance to the Opium Theatre next to Superfrico. Diners can also find more than 20 action figures created by Morgan Philips (also known as The Sucklord) based on the Opium characters.

The Look: Boom Bang Fine Foods & Cocktails from Top Chef alum Elia Aboumrad-Page, Christian Page, and Tony Angotti brings a fun pop of the desert to Henderson. Evolve Interiors Corri Backman, longtime friend of the married chefs Aboumrad-Page and Page, designed Boom Bangs interior with vibrant cactus wallpaper and a palette of green, orange, and bright yellow. A green ceiling makes the space feel full and finished while dialing in on that cactus green color. A long, cushioned banquette lines the perimeter to soften the space with bare wooden tables and wood floor, and Aboumrad-Page covered the tabletops in buttons from her fathers haberdashery in Mexico City,

Rich Bisaccia has earned the coaching job in Las Vegas – NBC Sports

It cant be official until the playoff run ends and an appropriate search occurs. Once that happens, the right answer for the Raiders has become obvious.

Rich Bisaccia should be the teams next head coach.

The 61-year-old has stabilized a franchise rocked by controversy and tragedy, from the Jon Gruden resignation to the Henry Ruggs situation. Bisaccia has, through the adversity, kept a steady hand and nudged the Raiders to the postseason with four straight wins.

Also on his permanent record? A win in a regular-season game that will be permanently remembered by anyone who witnessed it.

As Mike Golic said on Mondays PFT Live, sometimes the right answer is staring you in the face. Despite a suggestion that the Raiders may pursue a rock star via trade with another team, Bisaccia is the obvious choice. And it wont take draft picks to keep him.

If it doesnt work in 2022 or 2023, a change can be made then. For now, he has done too much to not get a chance to show when he can do with a whole year to prepare for and execute the job. The locker room surely wants it. The fans will want it, too. No matter what happens in Cincinnati on Saturday.

Las Vegas out of running for 2024 Republican National Convention as list of finalists released – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Las Vegas didnt make the cut for potential sites for the 2024 Republican National Convention.

The Republican National Committee (RNC) on Friday released a list of finalists: Milwaukee, Nashville, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman said in September that Las Vegas was interested in being the host city.

The Republican National Committee is grateful for and appreciative of the overwhelming interest from cities across the country to host the 2024 Republican National Convention. Well continue the process, review bids, and communicate with potential hosts to hear more about what their cities have to offer, said RNC Chief of Staff Richard Walters.

The RNC met with interested cities on Oct. 26 in Washington D.C. before narrowing the list.

In September, Goodman said, No one does conventions and conferences better than Las Vegas does, and our community is ready for this major economic boost.

The three-day convention is expected to bring an economic impact of about $200 million to benefit the host city as delegates and media converge for the high-profile event.

Committee staff will be traveling to the four finalists to confirm that these cities are viable to host and will narrow the selection down to three cities, according to an RNC statement Friday.

Goodman, a Republican, said Las Vegas should be considered as a site for the Democratic National Convention, too.

Just give me the keys: Several cars, $11,000 stolen in Las Vegas-area carjacking spree – KLAS – 8 News Now

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) Three people have been arrested in connection with a robbery crime spree in the valley, Las Vegas Metro police said.

Police arrested Avian Wells, Kyree Thomas, and a minor connected with the spree.

Police said the trio is involved in four armed robberies, including one incident at MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.

On Nov. 24 around 4 p.m., a person reported to police that his vehicle was stolen by several men while he was pumping gas at the Terribles gas station at 4701 W. Lake Mead Blvd.

The victim told police that he drove his daughters car to get gas. When he started to clean the windows, four males between the ages of 18-21 years old approached him, he said. One of them asked if he had any money.

The victim told the suspect that he did not have any money. A second suspect approached him from behind, reached into his front pocket, and took his car keys.

The males got into the victims vehicle and drove off.

At approximately 8 p.m., an unmarked LVMPD vehicle observed the car parked across the street from 900 Doolittle Street.

Police detectives started following the car. When officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop at Las Vegas and Lamb boulevards, the suspects refused to comply and a pursuit began.

The pursuit continued north on Las Vegas Boulevard to I-15. Speeds reached over 100 miles, police said.

The car exited onto Cheyenne, heading west and then south on Revere. The pursuit ended in front of 1733 N. Curran Way. All three suspects fled the vehicle, and officers initiated a foot pursuit.

The first suspect, Avian Wells, and the second suspect, a 16-year-old male, were taken into custody. The third suspect ran off.

A lanyard with a Mercedes car key was found nearby, where the second suspect was arrested.

During a search of the area, police found also found a couple of handguns and several rounds. The lanyard and key were confirmed to a victim whose car was robbed from MGM a day prior.

On Nov. 23, a person had called police, saying she was robbed at gunpoint of her vehicle while she was on the third floor of MGM Grand Hotel and Casino parking garage.

The victim told police that she parked her vehicle and walked around to the passenger side when she was approached by one of the suspects.

The suspect said to the victim, Just give me the keys! The victim and the suspect wrestled over the keys before the man took out a black revolver and put it at her back. One of the suspects then called over the others to help wrestle her to the ground before taking her car keys and fleeing in the car.

Later that day, police found the car with its engine running and all four doors open on the east side of Doolittle Park, located at 1950 J St.

On Nov. 21, a victim called police saying his vehicle had been stolen at gunpoint at 1327 H St.

The victim told police that he and his nephew were approached by three males, two with handguns. The other had a black revolver and was told to get out of his vehicle while their mother made a Door Dash delivery.

On Nov 24., a victim walked out of the Subway restaurant at 1735 W. Craig Road in North Las Vegas when one of the suspects came from behind and showed a revolver. The victim doesnt speak English, but understood he was being robbed.

The victim told police that they stole his Louis Vuitton satchel. The pouch is worth $2,500-$3,000. The bag had many things in it, including $11,050 in cash, Dolce Gabbana sunglasses, condoms, and several credit and gift cards.

After his arrest, Wells told police that he played basketball at Fountain Park with Thomas and two unnamed males on Nov 24. Later in the day, Wells, Thomas, and the juvenile walked to the Terribles gas station and planned to rob someone.

Wells claimed they picked the car because the driver pumping gas appeared not to be paying attention.

Wells and the 16-year-old suspect were arrested on Nov. 24. Thomas was arrested the next day for his alleged involvement in the serial robbery spree.

All three of them were re-arrested on Dec. 15 in connection with the North Las Vegas robbery.
