Most students are living away from their families for the first time. This includes cooking their own meals and making sure they get the right amount of nutrients.

This can be hard for some students. Between going to class, studying for exams, maintaining relationships and making big decisions about their future, college students can quickly abandon crucial things such as physical and mental health.

A healthy lifestyle may not always be a students top priority. We have so much going on in our lives that sometimes its easier to eat leftover pizza for dinner than to cook a nutritious meal.

Whether youre looking to continue a healthy lifestyle or start a new one, this is the perfect time to learn. These tips will keep you feeling fit, lively and stress-free throughout the semester.

1. Learning to eat smart

Before you start running low on meal swipes and flex cash, make healthier choices more convenient by stocking your refrigerator with nutritious foods. You do not have to live off of the dining hall alone. Oatmeal packets, yogurt cups, fruits, vegetables and microwaveable soups are perfect for the days when youre sick of cafeteria food.

2. Avoid Temptations

Pizza for breakfast, lunch and dinner might sound like a good idea at the time, but trust me, your body wont appreciate it as much. Instead of being tempted to eat all that junk food, switch it out for whole foods every once in a while.

Also, avoid the temptation to skip any meals at all costs. Skipping meals is not a healthy alternative to eating junk food. Pack a lunch or make sure you keep snacks in your backpack for long days.

3. Establish a routine

Were all busy throughout the week and committing to a routine is the best way to keep yourself stress-free. Make an attempt to establish a routine to help improve your self-discipline. It is crucial while trying to stay motivated and improve your well-being.

Getting into the habit of working out regularly, getting enough study time and maintaining a proper sleep schedule will only positively impact your semester.

4. Set personal goals

You likely have a general idea of what you want to achieve in school and in your personal life. Setting personal goals for yourself is a great way to help ensure your emotional and physical health stays stable.

Well-being and maintaining your emotional health is vital to your success in college. Setting personal goals can help maintain this and your self-confidence.

5. Dont be too hard on yourself.

College can be discouraging and you might not meet all of your goals. Trust me, the world isnt going to end if you fail one chemistry test. It may feel like it at the time, but find an opportunity to learn from every mistake.

The challenges you face in these four years will end up paying off in the end. College is such an exciting and rewarding time. Learning how to take care of yourself, remembering to work hard, trying your best, and most of all, enjoying it, will help you succeed.

An active lifestyle also improves muscle strength, which gives a person more energy. Evidence shows that people who walk 30 minutes every day reduce the risk of dying prematurely.

Exercising enables a person to enjoy the outdoors, unwind and become happy, according to Mayo Clinic. It also allows a person to connect with friends and family. An active lifestyle is more rewarding when people do what make them happy, advises Mayo Clinic. People who have chronic health problems should consult a doctor before engaging in physical activities.

Eat healthy at 50 and beyond – Stanly News & Press

A balanced diet is an integral element of a healthy lifestyle for men, women and children alike. But while kids and young adults might be able to get away with an extra cheeseburger here or there, men and women approaching 50 have less leeway.

According to the National Institute on Aging, simply counting calories without regard for the foods being consumed is not enough for men and women 50 and older to maintain their long-term health. Rather, the NIA emphasizes the importance of choosing low-calorie foods that have a lot of the nutrients the body needs.

But counting calories can be an effective and simple way to maintain a healthy weight, provided those calories are coming from nutrient-rich foods. The NIA advises men and women over 50 adhere to the following daily calorie intake recommendations as they attempt to stay healthy into their golden years.

Women

Not physically active: 1,600 calories

Somewhat active: 1,800 calories

Active lifestyle: between 2,000 and 2,200 calories

Men

Not physically active: 2,000 calories

Somewhat active: between 2,200 and 2,400 calories

Active lifestyle: between 2,400 and 2,800 calories

When choosing foods to eat, the NIA recommends eating many different colors and types of vegetables and fruits. Phytochemicals are substances that occur naturally in plants, and there are thousands of these substances offering various benefits. The Produce for Better Health Foundation notes that a varied, colorful diet incorporates lots of different types of phytochemicals, which the PBH says have disease-preventing properties.

The NIA also advises that men and women over 50 make sure at least half the grains in their diets are whole grains. Numerous studies have discovered the various benefits of whole grains, which are loaded with protein, fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients. Whole grains have been shown to reduce the risk for diseases such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease and some types of cancer.

Another potential hurdle men and women over 50 may encounter is a change in their sense of smell and taste. A person's sense of smell may fade with age, and because smell and taste are so closely related, foods enjoyed for years may no longer tantalize the taste buds. That can be problematic, as many people instinctually add more salt to foods they find bland. According to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, older adults should consume no more than 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day. That equates to roughly 3/4 teaspoon of salt. Older men and women should resist the temptation to use salt to add flavor to foods, instead opting for healthy foods that they can still smell and taste. In addition, men and women should mention any loss of their sense of smell to their physicians, as such a loss may indicate the presence of Parkinson's disease or Alzheimer's disease.

Maintaining a healthy diet after 50 may require some hard work and discipline. But the long-term benefits of a healthy diet make the extra effort well worth it. LP173834

‘The Biggest Loser’: Meet all the contestants who are set to sail on a journey of transformation on the show – MEAWW

'The Biggest Loser' is coming back to the screen with another season. Bob Harper will be appearing on the show as the host and will follow the lives of men and women who are coming together to change their life.

The audience will get a chance to be part of the journey where contestants not only lose weight but try to fight the reasons that led them to gain weight in the first place.

Trainers, Steve Cook and Erica Lugo will also be following the journey of these contestants and the show will allow the contestants to tell their life stories to the world.

Teri Aguiar was formerMiss Missouri 1999. She then turned flight nurse from Columbia. Aguiar, who is a mother of two decided to start her journey on the show ever since she felt her weight was slowing her down. Currently, at 256 pounds, Aguiar hopes she can get her weight under control and that would help her do her job better.

Katarina Bouton is a 23-year-old cardiac nurse from Jacksonville. She has always struggled with her weight and has decided to come as a contestant on the show to drive her lifestyle towards healthy living. Bouton has always advised people on healthy eating but weighing at 293 pounds, Bouton often finds herself munching on fast food during her shifts. She now hopes to turn her life around.

Domenico Brugellis is a proud father of a six-year-old and works as a food manager with the Department of Education. His job requires him to make healthy choices for the children and his chef background helps him do just that. However, when it comes to himself, Brugellis is unable to maintain a healthy balance with food. Now, weighing 323 pounds, he hopes to make a change in his life as he decides to become a part of the show.

Micah Collum is a 23-year-old from Oneonta whose childhood impacted his way of living. Having divorced parents made Micah and his six siblings fend for themselves. While his weight and height posed an advantage when he was in high school, things have changed now. Ever since Collum graduated he has gained 100 pounds and is struggling to make ends meet as he juggles between various jobs. Weighing at 326, Collum hopes to change his life for the better.

Kim Davis is known for her charming personality and weighing at 242 pounds she is set to turn her life around. Davis currently works like a top tour guide at a popular whiskey distillery. Almost 19 years ago she won her battle against breast cancer and she is not set to start another journey and this time it is to tackle her weight.

Jim DiBattista is a proud father of three who also takes on the role of coach of a local youth football team in his native Philadelphia. DiBattista weighs 385 pounds and wants to lose weight to make sure that he is there to support his family.

Megan Hoffman is a 35-year-old from Simi Valley and is an Operations and Retention Director at a gym. Working at the gym Hoffman is aware of the importance of having a healthy lifestyle but she is unable to take control of her life. Weighing 290 pounds Hoffman decided that it was high time she takes control of her life and this led her to become a part of the show.

PhiXavier Holmes is a professional school counselor in Washington D.C. Holmes loves to invest herself in the lives of her students. However, food became her best friend after her father passed away. Weighing at 357 pounds Holmes hopes to shift towards a healthy living.

Kristi McCart is a law and estate planning, an attorney who hails from Riverview. Her unhealthy relationship with food started at a young age. As a child, McCart would often witness inconsistency as her parents were divorced. She would experience days when she stayed with her mother while others when she spent time with her father. Weighing at 264 pounds McCart is having difficulty getting pregnant. From joining this show, McCart hopes to make better life choices in the future.

Robert Richardson II works as a Territory Sales Manager for a tobacco company in Lafayette. Son of a former NFL player, Richardson always had dreams about joining the football team like his father. Unfortunately, his dreams were shattered once he suffered injuries due to his weight. Weighing at 409 pounds Richardson is trying to make exercise part of his everyday life.

Delores Tomorrow is the founder of a non-profit serving teen girls of color, and event planner who served on the advance team for former First Lady Michelle Obama. Tomorrow has always put off hitting the gym or following a healthy diet but weighing at 280 pounds she is ready to bring out the best in her and start losing weight.

Kyle Yeo lived most of his life as a closeted gay man so he relied on food to hide his feelings. Weighing 302 pounds Yeo now hopes to not let his weight define him. He decided to be part of the show so he can feel confident about his body.

Former NBA Superstar and business mogul, Earvin Magic Johnson, has invested in Naturade, a Black owned company that produces all natural health products, Black Enterprise reports.

Naturade has been producing plant based cough and cold formulas, soy protein powders and other health supplements for nearly 100 years. CEO Claude Tellis and chief marketing officer Kareem Cook acquired the company in 2012 and he'spartnering with the Hall of Famer to help expand the brand and mission. Johnson, along with Olympic gold medal winner, Grant Hill, both invested in the company with the hopes of providing access to quality health productsin underserved communities.

Ive followed Kareem and Claudes journey for some time and their mission aligns well with my own passion to live a healthy lifestyle. I strongly believe in exercise and being intentional about what I eat and drink. Therefore joining Naturade was an easy decision. Together we are proving that if you offer people healthy products that taste good and can positively impact their well-being, they will make the changes necessary to improve their lives, Johnson told WholeFoods Magazine.

Cook and Tellis are seeking to highlight the overwhelming numbers of pre-diabetics in the country, despite the booming health industry. There are 86 million prediabetics in this country according to the American Diabetes Association. The health supplement industry is a $13 billion industry and growing. The goal for most companies is to make money; they want to sell to the premium stores where they can sell a product for a high price and people will buy it. And thats a great business model but it doesnt solve the problem, Cook said.

Naturade is seeking to change that by ensuring that communities who need these products the most have access to them. I grew up in the Bronx. Why should people in my family have to get on a bus and a train to get to a Whole Foods to buy these products when they should be able to go downstairs to a local store and have the same access? Magic understands that from his own business dealings. He proved people wrong so many times before, and this is an opportunity to prove people wrong again, and to make a successful business doing it, said Cook.

Tellis said that Naturade is a disruptive brand. He and Cook are looking to prove that people in underserved communities place a premium on their health as well. And with a little bit of education and access to quality products, they too will invest in their wellness. Cook hopes that the added star power will help spread the word.

Magic Johnson and Grant Hill and other people will be coming on board who are able to amplify the message because they have such strong followings. They have people look up to them and respect their decisions and the way theyre living their lives, Cook said.
