As robots evolve, societys collective imagination forever ponders what else robots can do, with recent fascinations coming to life as self-driving cars or robots that can walk and interact with objects as humans do.

These sophisticated systems are powered by advances in deep learning that triggered breakthroughs in robotic perception, so that robots today have greater potential for better decision-making and improved functioning in real-world environments. But tomorrows roboticists need to understand how to combine deep learning with dynamics, controls, and long-term planning. To keep this momentum in robotic manipulation going forward, engineers today must learn to hover above the whole field, connecting an increasingly diverse set of ideas with an interdisciplinary focus needed to design increasingly complex robotic systems.

Last fall, MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science launched a new course, 6.800 (Robotic Manipulation) to help engineering students broadly survey the latest advancements in robotics while troubleshooting real industry problems. Its a unique course that can provide an inroad into robotics for students with no robotics experience at all, designed by Russ Tedrake, the Toyota Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Aeronautics and Astronautics, and Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Tedrake developed the course after robotic manipulation became the new focus of his own research at the Toyota Research Institute and MITs Robot Locomotion Group, and it became apparent to him that developing a pedagogical framework would be important because the field is so diverse and changing so rapidly.

It was time for there to be a single place where you could really get a view of all the pieces, Tedrake says.

His students learn fundamental algorithmic approaches to build robot systems capable of autonomously manipulating objects in unstructured environments. Exploring topics like perception, planning, dynamics, and control, students solve problem sets to guide themselves through developing a software stack, typically using the permissively licensed open-source software Drake which is why industry leaders watch Tedrakes lectures, too. Not focused on quizzes and final exams, the course culminates instead with a final project where students can explore any problem in robotic manipulation that fascinates them.

Undergraduate engineering student David von Wrangel is currently in the course. His background is in rocketry and propulsion, and he only just became interested in robotics through a recent mobile robotics internship at Tesla. Learning what it took to make a robot move around, soon his next question became: how can a robot be made to pick something up? Thats when a colleague at his internship told him about MITs Robotic Manipulation course.

I was super excited, because that was exactly what I was missing: now that you can manipulate your robot, you just need to figure out how to use manipulation to move other things, von Wrangel says.

Tedrakes course notes provide students like von Wrangel with a window to peer across the professors own mental landscape of the field. Students say they are unlike any course notes theyve ever seen providing a constantly updated roadmap of what it would take to advance robotics as a field.

Teaching assistants (TAs), like PhD student H.J. Terry Suh last fall, develop problem sets that offer students opportunities to apply less familiar concepts and see for themselves how various disciplines connect.

That potential to gain a new point of view in robotics is precisely what drew graduate student Anubhav Guha to the course. His research focuses on applications of controls, and he took the course to examine open-ended problems in robotics that directly related to his research. I kind of wanted to explore the field a bit and get a feel for the technical problems, Guha says.

Tedrake says theres rampant industry interest in engineers skilled in manipulation, and that demand helped motivate him to launch the course. Manipulation is just kind of exploding in the field, Tedrake says, adding that recently, it's less of a niche area, everybody's got an eye on making robots do things with their hands. Right now, the big companies are investing.

They arent the only ones invested in the future for robots. Because there was so much student interest in the course, Tedrake decided to open Robotic Manipulation enrollment up to both undergraduate and graduate students.

For PhD student Daniel Yang, who took the course when it was first offered last fall, his interest in robotic manipulation increased while working in industry and seeing the limited environments in which robots currently operate. As part of the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) Joint Program, Yang collaborates with oceanographers, helping to build autonomous robotic systems capable of diving into the water to collect scientific data.

Broadly, I'm interested in getting robots out in the real world, Yang says.

For Yangs course final project, he was inspired to explore the inner workings of a throwing robot like Googles TossingBot. Collaborating with a partner to build their own ball-throwing robot in a simulator, they were able to clearly document effects that threw the robot off its tossing game, because the course simulator allowed them to freeze and reexamine every interaction while troubleshooting. For one example, they realized that the accuracy of their robots throwing arm was limited because the exact physics of how the ball interacted with the robots gripper were still unknown.

You may think picking something up with your fingers is quite simple, Yang says. But when you try to translate that into simulation, theres just so much added complexity.

Suh says that Guhas final project was among the most ambitious. Guha created an entire simulated manipulator system that pieces together a puzzle using a camera system that detects the correct image placement and orientation for each puzzle piece.

Some other projects kind of focused on one aspect of the manipulation pipeline, like grasping or perception, Guha says. And they really went in deep into that. And I wanted to explore all of the different components that are required to make a fully functioning system.

Tedrake says that whether students decide to focus on one aspect of the manipulation pipeline or tackle an entire system, solving problems at any level equates to a great success in this fast-growing field thats hungry for solutions.

Even if it's an algorithm that I know well, but I see what they struggled with, or how they made work, it sharpens my understanding of the algorithm, Tedrake says.

Tedrake takes many of the solutions found in his class directly into the lab, pushing forward his own research and gaining new research ideas each week. And sometimes he brings the students with him. Thats what happened with von Wrangel, whose enthusiasm for the course led Tedrake to recruit him to help refine algorithms for Tedrakes Robot Locomotion Group.

Yang and Suh agree with Tedrake that the future of robotic manipulation is coming fast and the Robotic Manipulation course will help train engineers to steady the field as it advances.

I think the last few years, there's been so many advances in all these different fields, but there hasn't been anything that ties them together into one specific problem space, Yang says.

Suh thinks people will start seeing more advancements in everyday life, and as that happens the Robotic Manipulation course will be there as a resource. His vision of the future sees robots everywhere.

It's going to be sort of manipulation in the wild, where we'll have robots go inside arbitrary places, like people's homes or kitchens, and carry out very delicate manipulation tasks that we would usually expect humans to do, Suh says.

For von Wrangel, the future of robotic manipulation will help us go well beyond the seeming luxury of self-driving cars and robot task-rabbits. I'm very much into space exploration and humans becoming multi-climate and multiplanetary species, von Wrangel says. And I believe that robots could help us build our future on Mars.

In its second year, Robotic Manipulation keeps inspiring bigger and bolder ideas from students, who ply TAs like Suh with sometimes esoteric questions in the middle of the night, always seeking guidance to better simulate systems. Tedrake says the ideas for final projects this year have already been more ambitious than last year. Each project, tweaking each algorithm little by little or imagining entire systems from a unique point of view, will serve a role in driving innovation in the field.

Some years, with student projects, it's more like, I want to try this paper and just make it a little bit better, Tedrake says. And this year, it's like, I want a robot thats going to tie my shoes.

Flint, MIThis week, hundreds of YouthQuest students will have the chance to immerse themselves in all things science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics as part of the afterschool programs weeklong STEAMQuest event.

Each day, a different group of YouthQuest students will visit one of YouthQuests sites to participate in hands-on activities that promote problem solving, analytical thinking, learning by trial and error and creativity.

Hands-on activities will include robot races, music production, puzzle design, dance and more.

YouthQuest is a research-based afterschool program offering educational and enrichment activities that engage young minds. The program is administered by Flint & Genesee Education & Talent, a division of Flint & Genesee Group, with support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation and 21st Century Community Learning Centers.

Sutton FIRST robotics team competes at WPI; earns two awards – Millbury-Sutton Chronicle

WORCESTER -- The Sutton FIRST Robotics team8544, the Reinforcements, competed in the district event at WPI from April 8 to 10.

The alliance made it to the semifinals, before losing to the eventual meet winners.

The Sutton squad, which includes Sutton middle and high schoolers, as well as some Auburn students, began in 2021 during the pandemic, when the competition was all virtual. So, as a first-year in-person team, they were honored at WPI with two awards: one for being the highest rookie finisher; as well as the Rookie All Star award.

The Reinforcements won the Rookie Inspiration Award at its prior competitionat Shrewsbury High School March 25 to 27.

FIRST Robotics was started by entrepreneur Dean Kamen in 1992 to promote STEM in schools. Clinton's Gael Force was one of the original teams and won the first year's competition, earning an invitation to the White House.

Each year, FIRST invents a new competition for the robots. This year, it is calledRapid React. The games had robots pick up and shoot large balls into the hoops in the middle of the field, then hang and climb bars located at the corners of the field.

The Reinforcements will be heading to Springfield for the New England Championships this weekend.

Robotics hiring levels in the power industry rose in March 2022 – Power Technology

The proportion of power industry operations and technologies companies hiring for robotics related positions rose in March 2022 compared with the equivalent month last year, with 19.3% of the companies included in our analysis recruiting for at least one such position.

This latest figure was higher than the 14.6% of companies that were hiring for robotics-related jobs a year ago and an increase compared to the figure of 17.3% in February 2022.

When it came to the rate of all job openings that were linked to robotics, related job postings kept steady in March 2022, with 0.8% of newly posted job advertisements being linked to the topic.

This latest figure was a decrease compared to the 1.3% of newly advertised jobs that were linked to robotics in the equivalent month a year ago.

Robotics is one of the topics that GlobalData, from which our data for this article is taken, has identified as being a key disruptive force facing companies in the coming years. Companies that excel and invest in these areas now are thought to be better prepared for the future business landscape and better equipped to survive unforeseen challenges.

On April 13th, 2021- KAIST researchers have developed a novel nanofiber production technique called centrifugal multispinning that will open the door for the safe and cost-effective mass production of high-performance polymer nanofibers. This new technique, which has shown up to a 300 times higher nanofiber production rate per hour than that of the conventional electrospinning method, has many potential applications including the development of face mask filters for coronavirus protection. Nanofibers make good face mask filters because their mechanical interactions with aerosol particles give them a greater ability to capture more than 90% of harmful particles such as fine dust and virus-containing droplets.

Cleaning water with sunlight and nanotechnology – The Young Witness

Researchers based in Switzerland have developed a filter that can kill bacteria in drinking water using just sunlight and some carbon nanotubes.

Sanitation game changer

The filter, which is described in a paper in npj Clean Water, could become a useful purifier in places without access to reliable drinking water.

How it works

The secret ingredient is nanometre-sized wires made from titanium dioxide.

When combined with UV light, the nanowires cause small amounts of water (H2O) to react and become chemicals called Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) - things like hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), hydroxide (OH-) and oxygen (O2-).

While not present in high enough amounts to be a problem for people, these compounds can all wipe out bacteria pretty efficiently.

The researchers, who are based at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, also found that when they combined the titanium dioxide nanowires with carbon nanotubes, the mixed material was even better at removing pathogens.

The filter could become a useful purifier in places without access to reliable drinking water.

Effective filtering

The researchers have shown that their filter can remove E. coli, and they say that this means it should be equally effective on other bacteria - and some large viruses.

Professor Lszl Forr, senior author on the paper, says that the filter's design was "a close collaboration between chemists, physicists and biologists".

"Our prototype can supply clean drinking water even at remote places to small populations and could be easily scaled-up," adds Forr.

"It is a great achievement. An important 'side-product' of this project is that it has attracted a large number of talented and motivated students who care for environmental issues, and for sustainability."

A promising future

The researchers are now looking for ways to improve and fund their filter.

"I am convinced that it will create a strong follow-up in versatile scientific communities and hopefully funding agencies," says lead researcher Endre Horvth.

Smart packaging preserves food and enhances safety | News | Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health – HSPH News

April 12, 2022Keeping healthy foods fresh and unspoiled often comes with an environmental cost in the form of plastic waste. But it doesnt have to be this way, according to researchers from the Center for Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and colleagues at Singapores Nanyang Technological University. Theyve developed an alternative smart packaging material using biodegradable corn protein, starch, and other naturally derived biopolymers and nature inspired antimicrobials. It keeps harmful bacteria and spoilage microorganisms off of food and plastic pollution out of the environment.

The packaging is made primarily from a type of corn protein called zeinwhich is produced from corn gluten meal, a waste by-product of ethanol productionand other bio-polymers that can be extracted from food waste. It contains a mesh of nanoscale fibers, which were produced through a scalable technology called electrospinning and infused with a combination of natural antimicrobial compounds including thyme oil and citric acid. The fibers were programmed to sense the presence of enzymes from bacteria such as E. Coli and Listeria and increased levels of relative humidity on their surface. In response to these conditions they release miniscule amounts of the antimicrobials to enhance food safety and shelf life.

In an experiment, strawberries that were wrapped in the packaging stayed fresh for seven days before developing mold, compared to strawberries that were kept in typical plastic fruit boxes, which only stayed fresh for four days. And because this protection is provided only when needed, the taste and composition of food in the packages is preserved. The results of the study were published in the journal ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces last October.

There is an urgent need to improve food packaging, according to the studys co-leader Philip Demokritou, adjunct professor of environmental health at Harvard Chan School and director of the Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology Center. Minimizing spoilage and waste will help provide the worlds growing populationexpected to reach nearly 10 billion by 2050with safe and nutritious food. And plastic is not a benign environmental nuisance. It degrades over the course of its lifecycle, and releases tiny fragments into the environment that end up in our air, water, and food, raising concerns for health.

We need more research in sustainable, biodegradable smart food packaging like this so that manufacturers can start making these materials in a scalable way, said Demokritou. There are a lot of companies focusing on developing sustainable technologies and materials. And Im very optimistic that we will see an escalation of their use in many products in the near future.

The development of this novel packaging material is a result of a collaboration by scientists from the NTU-Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health Initiative for Sustainable Nanotechnology (NTU-Harvard SusNano). The five-year Initiative, which brought together more than 30 faculty from Harvard and NTU, funded five research projects focused on assessing the health effects from nano and other advanced materials and developed technologies to address inefficiencies in agriculture and food systems. Demokritou, who was the founding co-director of the initiative, joined the Rutgers School of Public Health and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences Institute in 2021, where he is Henry Rutgers Chair and Professor in Nanoscience and Environmental Bioengineering.

The patented technology and material used in the smart packaging attracted the interest of industry, and efforts are underway for a potential commercial use, Demokritou said.

In another recent project, researchers at the Harvard Chan School NanoCenter and the Harvard School of Engineering developed a patented technology to synthesize a form of antimicrobial packaging that can be washed off of foods.

Researchers at the Schools NanoCenter are also exploring other ways to enhance food safety and quality, including a nanotechnology-based antimicrobial platform using their engineered water nanostructure technology.

They found that including transient charge fluctuations greatly increased the accuracy, which may help lead to the development of new self-assembling smart nanomaterials.In ancient Roman mythology, Janus was the god of both beginnings and endings. His dual nature was often reflected in his depiction with two faces. He also lends his name to so-called Janus particles, which are nanoparticles that contain two or more distinct physical or chemical properties on their surface. One promising two-faced solution uses zwitterionic particles, which are spheres with a positively charged side and a negatively charged side.Researchers hope to create self-organizing structures, which can be activated by changes in a solutions salt concentration or pH. According to information gathered by Agenzia Fides, the intense synodal journey of spirituality of Lent, preceded by a long meditation before the Blessed Sacrament and the Crucifix, marked the usual sharing of the seminarians, guided by the formators and the spiritual assistant. Each class, group of seminarians and teaching staff presented their studies, their pastoral and missionary work carried out in the parish but also online, given that the pandemic situation does not yet allow the normal development of the life of the Church. The seminarians also took part in the monthly community spiritual retreat, on the theme "Contemplation in prayer", on March 25 and 26. Actor Jim Carrey has never been shy about any of his beliefs, from the political to his faiths. At one point, he even revealed that his faith helped him when journeying through hot Arizona. During his travels, Carrey recalled a particularly harrowing incident, where he feels he was comforted by a higher power.

This philosophy has even helped Carrey overcome extreme emotional issues.

But Carrey didnt limit himself to following just one religion.

Carreys newfound spiritual awakening has seen him through many trying times. In addition to granting him a certain level of peace, The Mask star once asserted it even saved his life. Speaking to The Mirror, Carrey recalled a time he went on an Arizona vision quest with the Lakota Indians.

I didnt plan on it, he said. I just went to a spa and I met a guy who was connected to the tribe and he told me about this vision quest which they dont let outsiders on. But I went and talked with the chief and he knew my heart was in the right place, so he decided that I could do it.

The journey would eventually take Carrey to the mountains.

I fasted for four days, I spent time in a sweat lodge and then they came in the middle of the night with a pick-up truck and blindfolded me and drove me to the top of this sacred mountain where theyd had these vision quests for a thousand years, he said.

Eventually, Carrey would feel he received help from a higher power during his quest.

Then at night I got tired of standing and I lay down on this little Indian blanket and I was really frightened. The coyotes were howling and the place was full of rattlesnakes, and I actually spoke out loud and said, God Im scared, be with me, he remembered. And at that point, the mountain range that was above me became the perfect shape of a man laying on his back beside me. All the fear left my body and I lay there thinking, This is really happening. Im actually seeing God and I cant believe it. Im so lucky.

Carrey was well aware of how some in the media viewed his newfound awakening. He compared it to how the industry once treated Tom Cruise.

Everyone gets to be the big joke for a year. Thats this business, he told The Times. Last year it was Tom Cruise. I could be the next Kathie Lee Gifford. But you have to say to yourself, Wait a minute, dude, thats not you.

Carrey was proud of the experiences his spirituality gave him. So much so that the Sonic actor considered writing a book about it.

It will be more representative of who I am than anything Ive ever done, he said. I feel like I know something. These thoughts make me feel like Im wearing gold shoes.

Spiritual leader for Cleveland’s non-conformists leaves a legacy of slowing down and opening up – ideastream

In a video recording captured a few years ago, Tom Leonhardt led a chant of the Hindu Gayatri mantra at the Crown Point Ecology Center in Akron.

Leonhardt in his early 80s at the time stood in a barn, surrounded by a small group of chanters. He wore a black T-shirt and a beaded South Asian meditation necklace as he taught the mantras words in the ancient language of Sanskrit.

"So it's call and response; is that going to be OK for you?" he asks the group.

The question seems to put them at ease. They smile and nod.

This is hardly the traditional picture of an ordained Catholic priest which Leonhardt once was.

But according to his many followers, untraditional was Leonhardt's way an approach he practiced until his death in December, at age 87, of complications from COVID-19.

"The people for whom he was most important were those who were neglected by or couldn't make it work in more institutional settings," said John McKinney, a psychiatric social worker from Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood.

McKinney first met Leonhardt more than 30 years ago. Leonhardt eventually became his spiritual director teaching him how to meditate, for example.

"He used a prayer from the Vietnamese monk Thich Nhat Hahn, who said, Breathing, I know that I am breathing in. Breathing out, I know that I'm breathing out," McKinney said.

Drawing from different spiritual traditions was not an approach for which Leonhardt prepared early in his career.

Born in Toledo in 1934, he studied medieval Latin and religion in college. In the 1970s, he taught theology at St. Ignatius High School in Cleveland, eventually becoming ordained as a Catholic priest.

Then, in 1981, he started forging his own path. He rented space in an apartment house on West 69th Street, in Clevelands Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood. He paid the rent with his own money. Two or three times a week, he'd host Catholic services that included teachings from other religious traditions.

Now called Hope House of Prayer, the space is still in the same building today.

A small gathering room is filled with overstuffed armchairs. On the walls are colorful paintings and photographs, many related to the liturgy, meditation, reiki and dance workshops he led here for more than 40 years.

"We can always pull in more chairs if we get a lot of people," said Carolyn Horvath, Tom's wife, who survived him, led Hope House of Prayer with him and lives there today.

Yes, wife. Tom left the priesthood in the late 1980s to marry Carolyn. She'd been a Catholic nun who met Tom during a retreat at Hope House, and she, too, needed to leave her Catholic order to get married.

Their newfound independence freed them to become even more far-reaching in their offerings, apparent from the wide array of art and artifacts that decorate the room.

"This picture over the couch is the cover of the book that he wrote, Praying with Aramaic Jesus," she said, pointing at a framed rectangle of rainbow colors. Then she pointed to a corner with a smiling Buddha statue.

"That's our Buddha corner, because we have meditation on Mondays," she explained.

The space is physically small, but spiritually large a feeling that's intentional, according to Horvath.

"What people tell us is that it's very peaceful. They feel welcomed," Horvath said. "And from the beginning also we have said the door is open to everyone."

Welcoming everyone and forging their own path wasnt always easy or luxurious.

For the first 10 years after they got married, when they were in their 50s and 60s, Tom and Carolyn cleaned houses to pay their bills.

Later, they added to their income by working as "simulated patients" at the Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine, giving feedback so students could practice their bedside manner.

Dr. Edweana Robinson of Kent State hired them more than 20 years ago.

"I want to be like Tom," she said. "I want to be a kind and gentle person."

Robinson said Leonhardt, with his shock of white hair and often sporting a rainbow peace symbol on his windbreaker, became a familiar and beloved presence on campus. Not just for his words but his way of being.

"Sometimes we are so rushed, we are so pushed that we forget all we want to do is get the job done as opposed to working to make the world better," Robinson said. "And he did. And that's what I want to remember is how I should treat other people."

Slowing down, being present, being kind Carolyn Horvath said those are her husband's greatest legacies.

Since he died a few months ago, she's been going through a dog-eared copy of The Little Prince. He used it as his only textbook early in his career as a theology teacher. It's full of passages he underlined, one of which Horvath read aloud:

"And all day, he says over and over, Just like you, I am busy with matters of consequence, and that makes him swell up with pride. But he is not a man, he is a mushroom."

Horvath laughed, her eyes welling.

"I like that one a lot," she said.

Stations of the Cross, a spiritual journey, is observed in variety of ways in the Miami Valley – Dayton Daily News

For Christians, walking the Way of the Cross can be an unforgettable spiritual journey. As they stop to pray at each of the 14 Stations, the faithful are symbolically treading the path Jesus walked to Mount Calvary while reflecting on the suffering He endured.

The devotional prayers may be conducted personally or by an officiating celebrant who may move from station to station as congregants respond. The path begins when Jesus is condemned to death and concludes when he is placed in the tomb. In 1991 Pope St. John Paul II created a new scriptural version of the Stations.

Artistic depictions of the stations can be found on interior church walls as well as outside on the grounds and gardens. Catholics as well as Episcopalians, Lutherans, Presbyterians and other Protestant churches mark this significant season of the year by visiting the stations during Lentbetween Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

The origins of the practice of praying the Stations of the Cross are believed to be connected to early Christians retracing Jesus steps from the site of his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to the place of his death. That practice continues today on the path known as the Via Dolorosa (The sorrowful road.)

Angie and Willliam Platfoot of Tipp City are among those who have participated in the meaningful tradition in Jerusalem. Angie, who grew up near Minster, Ohio has early memories of praying the Stations with the Sisters at school on Fridays with her classmates.

Everybody was farmers there so we did the stations on Sunday afternoon with our families, she remembers. Then, when our children were little we started doing them again.

The couple has made two pilgrimages to Israelone in 2017 and another in 2019. On one of them, nine brothers and sisters and three in-laws accompanied the couple.

The experience, says Bill Platfoot, was very moving. You are following in the footsteps where Jesus walked and carrying a big wooden cross as you go from one station to the next, he explains. " You pray the rosary, youre meditating, its very spiritual. Its one of the highlights of my life, an experience I never dreamed Id have.

The Platfoots, who belong to West Milton Church of the Transfiguration, are fortunate to have access to stations both indoors and outdoors at their church as well as the Transfiguration Center for Spiritual Renewal in Ludlow Falls.

A beautiful outdoor walk

One of the loveliest places to walk the Stations is at the Transfiguration Center. Located on 173 acres of gently rolling land bordering the Stillwater River, the Center, endowed by Kathryn Lange as a retirement community for priests, is open to the public on weekdays and includes wooded trails, natural grasses, wildflowers, native birds and wildlife.

The Rev. John D. MacQuarrie, now pastor of St. Bernard parishes in Springfield, was serving in West Milton at the time the Center was created and says the stations were hand carved by local woodcarver, John Bookwalter.

John had a wood shop in West Milton for a good number of years, MacQuarrie remembers. He was a very creative fellow and people loved his art. He grew up in Transfiguration Parish and we asked him to make new stations for outdoor prayer and meditation based on Pope John Pauls more accurate scriptural references.

Bookwalter was given a book to follow with simple pictures and Bible references. According to our business manager and grounds keeper at the Lange Estate, John used different species of wood but mainly walnut, ash and oak. It took him about six to eight months; he finished in 2003. He died about six years later and I celebrated his funeral.

MacQuarrie adds that the sculptures were almost destroyed during the tornado and had to be moved to a new location outside of the woods.

Walking for social justice

For more than 30 years, a number of local faith organizations have collaborated to host a downtown Dayton Good Friday Walk for Justice and Peace in which the traditional devotional practice is paired with contemporary social justice issues.

The idea is to bring attention to the suffering of many people in our world and how from a faith perspective we are called to be aware of their suffering and think of ways in which we might help to alleviate it, explains Nick Cardilino, director for the Center for Social Concern at the University of Dayton. People have used the Stations of the Cross as a way to compare the suffering of various people to the suffering of Christ.

Examples? The first station, when Jesus is condemned to death, is recited in front of the Old Courthouse where the death penalty is referenced. In front of the YWCA, there is a focus on the lack of affordable child care tied to station number four where Jesus meets his mother.

A similar annual walk is held at UD. Like other Catholic churches around the world, UDs Chapel of the Immaculate Conception features the 14 stations prominently displayed on its walls, explains Scott Paeplow, associate director of Campus Ministry. Campus Ministry has led gatherings every Friday afternoon throughout Lent to pray the Stations together as a faith community as we journey through this liturgical season towards the celebration of the High Holy days of the Church.

In years past UD students, faculty and staff have also prayed the 14 stations through the lens of social justice and care for the marginalized through the annual observation of the Romero Stations of the Cross.

Praying at home

Stores that specialize in selling religious items offer a variety of products to enhance the devotional experience of praying the stations. Dayton Church Supply in downtown Dayton is a fourth-generation, family-owned business that carries products for both churches and home.

A wide variety of meditation booklets and pamphlets are available at the store, including those written especially for children.

There are home-bound people who want to do the stations but cant get to a church, explains Karen Klepacz. We have beads for meditation and prayer with the Stations on them, an olive wood crucifix with the stations and a new item for children with little windows that can be closed after they pray each station.

The stores second floor has a wall of sample stations that can be special ordered. Materials range from fiber glass and mosaics to wood carvings and fabric.

The store, located at 136 E 3rd St, is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Phone: 937- 223-2521.

Bringing the stations to life

One of the eagerly anticipated Lentin events at Emmanuel Catholic Church in Dayton is an annual dramatic reenactment by young church members incorporating narration, meditations, acting and song. Thirty children, dressed in tunics created by volunteer moms, participated this year.

Jenn Dahlstrom of Beavercreek, who directs the special evening, says its been performed for the past 20 years. She says other churches in the Miami Valley have heard about it and asked for the script.

Fourteen-year-old Matthew Greiner, who participated for the first time this year, played the coveted role of Jesus.

Through my experience in the Living Stations of the Cross, I found that we can only understand a tiny bit of the pain Our Lord went through during His passion, he says.
