Commercial Vehicle Group (CVG) Announces Improved Outlook for the Second Half of 2022 and First Win in Aerospace – GlobeNewswire

NEW ALBANY, Ohio, June 28, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CVG announced today that it has substantially completed the renegotiation of pricing agreements with several large revenue customers.

The new pricing taking effect this week, July 1, is expected to increase run-rate profits by >$30 million and also increase free cash flow accordingly. The second half of 2022 will immediately benefit from an additional >$15 million of increased pricing, which is expected to improve profitability and free cash flow in the second half of the year, with favorable impact beyond 2022 as well.

"It has taken a lot of time and effort to achieve renegotiated agreements that are profitable and sustainable in the post-Covid, supply-constrained environment. We are thankful to our customers and global commercial teams for confronting these issues and fixing them. We have one primary agreement remaining to be renegotiated that does not expire until late 2023. Except for that agreement, we have new profitable agreements with profit-maintenance algorithms for our large revenue customers in place. AIX returns to delight the cabin interiors industry – Aerospace Manufacturing

From 14-16 June 2022, more than 12,000 professionals from the cabin interiors industry descended on the Hamburg Messe to celebrate the triumphant return of Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX).

The highly anticipated event the first physical AIX in three years created a sought-after opportunity for the passenger experience community, including representatives from more than 180 airlines, leasing companies and business jet operators, to reconnect face-to-face to discover the latest product launches from over 600 exhibitors and new announcements at the show did not disappoint.

A hotbed of product innovation

The opening day of Aircraft Interiors Expo 2022 was defined by an exciting line-up of new product launches, with exhibitors eager to reveal the innovations and new developments theyve been working on over the past 36 months. Among those to unveil new products, Panasonic Avionics announced its new in-flight entertainment (IFE) seat-end system, Astrova. Designed with passenger engagement in mind, Astrova reflects the latest on-the-ground technology, making the transition from passengers personal devices to in-flight entertainment seamless. It features cinema-grade 4K OLED screens with High Dynamic Range (HDR), Panasonics award-winning Bluetooth technology, as well as 67W of USB-C power to fast-charge smart devices.

Following its successful launch to a packed stand, the Panasonic team announced that fellow AIX exhibitor, Recaro Aircraft Seating would seamlessly integrate the Astrova seat-end solution into its newly revamped CL3810 to further optimise the passenger journey for single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft. Attendees visiting the Recaro stand were provided with a first look at the CL3810 economy class seat.

As the successor to the German seat manufacturers popular CL3710, the new CL3810 offers weight savings of 1.5kg per seat, combining innovative ergonomic technology, premium comfort cushions with layered foam, and lightweight smart engineering. Its unique shape is designed to support the passengers points of tension, which reflects the award-winning design of the Recaro Automotive sport seat. Compared to its predecessor, the CL3810 offers an additional inch of living space, a more advanced articulated seat pan, and a wider backrest to enhance row-to-row privacy.

Other seating innovations were quick to make headlines across the show from suppliers including Safran Seats, TSI Seats, Aviointeriors and more. Showcasing a range of innovative concepts and configurations, Aviointeriors highlighted its Business Class Allegra lie-flat seat; 7.5kg FABRY economy class seat; and Heric (Herringbone in Cruise) and DoDo (Double Dodo Bed) family of products, which allow seating to be tailored to each airlines requirements. These concepts are designed to provide a seating area that can be easily converted to a lie-flat area, expanding configuration options for airlines.

Safran Seats showcased a duo of business-class products: VUE and UNITY. The first, VUE, is adapted to long-haul flights on narrowbody aircraft, but designed to assimilate the experience of the most comfortable, widebody airplanes. The name, VUE stems from the window-facing experience it delivers for every passenger. Meanwhile, UNITY is a new generation of high-end, forward-facing business class seats that provide every passenger with direct access to the aisle and multiple storage areas.

TSI Seats also launched its economy class seat Milligram, and award-winning, business class seat Royalux. Described as a next-generation lightweight economy class seat, the Milligram is optimised for narrow-body A320 and B737 aircraft. It is one of the lightest seats in the market at less than 7.5kg per passenger without a dress cover and USB outlet. Furthermore, it consists of a significantly reduced number of parts less than 70 parts per triple which are mostly made using ultra-durable, high-performance composite and aluminium parts. The company also displayed its new Royalux business class seat. Designed for the A320, A350, B737 and B787 aircraft, it can be used in business class in narrow-body, or premium economy in wide-body aircraft types.

In one of the more thought-provoking designs on display, TU Delft student, Alejandro Nunez Vicentes chaise lounge concept returned to the Aircraft Interior Refurbishment Espaa (AIRE) stand. The innovative concept is designed for a bi-level cabin that has rows of traditional seats on the floor, along with rows of elevated seats. Nominated for a Crystal Cabin Award in 2021, Alejandro returned to AIX following successful funding to work full-time on his prototype.

Ali Aljufairi, Manager IFE & Connectivity, Gulf Air, attended AIX to see and try the latest seat innovations. He explained: The return to an in-person event was so important in truly appreciating the different materials being used, the thought put into the design, as well as gaining a more rounded understanding of what the product can offer. This was aided immensely by attending the numerous product launches by seat manufacturers, such as Recaro, Stelia and TSI. It is such an educational experience, an institution. If I could describe it in three words, it would be 'educational', 'crucial' and 'possibilities'.

Outside of new seating concepts, further product announcements were unveiled across all eight halls. Helping airlines bring the connected vision to reality, Airbus revealed its Airspace Link HBCplus a flexible high bandwidth connectivity solution that will be offered as an SFE line-fit catalogue option and also for retrofit on all Airbus programmes. HBCplus, which initially encompasses Ka-band services, will enable airlines to connect to a choice of Managed Service Providers (MSPs) via a new certified terminal and radome built as part of the aircraft. In the future, it is planned to extend HBCplus to include MSPs which offer Ku-band services.

Airbus also revealed to AIX attendees that it had selected fellow AIX exhibitor and connectivity satcom leader, Inmarsat as the first MSP, while Safran Passenger Innovations (SPI) would act as terminal provider and hardware integrator of ThinKoms proven antenna technology.

On the Collins Aerospace stand, attendees discovered the companys new modular, thermoelectric cooling system that is scalable to fit a variety of applications throughout an aircrafts interior. SpaceChiller quietly and efficiently chills compartments to food-safe temperatures without the use of refrigerants that may impact global warming. It is designed to offer airlines flexibility in service, storage, and space without sacrificing room for passengers and flight attendants. Applications range from premium suites and passenger social zones to single galley inserts and whole cart bays.

Meanwhile, STG Aerospace declared 2022 a major launch year with innovations across its core technologies, photoluminescent and electrical. It revealed the worlds narrowest and lightest emergency floor path marking the brand new saf-Tglo SSUL-X11. This narrower option is designed to enhance cabin aesthetics, blending seamlessly into the cabin design, while maintaining passenger safety requirements. The company also announced its new platform-agnostic Universal Lighting capability and emergency exit system package for business jet and small fixed-wing aircraft (CS23).

Speaking about the return to AIX, Kate Williams, Brand Marketing Manager, STG Aerospace, said: The show has been really good and really busy. We werent sure what to expect after three years, but weve been fully booked with meetings and the quality of visitors has been great. Weve had lots of interest in the new products weve launched at the show. The feedback has been really positive and its great to know that were launching the products our customers want and need.

A place to learn and discuss future thinking

In addition to the abundance of new product development being showcased, the return of Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) welcomed four days of high-level thought leadership as experts from all corners of the industry came together to learn and debate the future of the passenger experience industry. Kick-starting proceedings, the Passenger Experience Conference opened at the newly refurbished Congress Center Hamburg (CCH).

Opening the conference, Paul Wylde, Founder, CEO and Creative Director of paulwylde delivered an impassioned speech that reflected on the lessons learnt during the pandemic, the changing attitudes of passengers and the ever-growing importance for brands to watch, observe and understand their audiences. He provided the audience with five key observations, from consumers desire to find something meaningful in the brands they choose, to the explosion of the metaverse and the importance of feeling connected. He encouraged brands to foster a culture of creativity, investigation and exploration and to find the will for measured risk-taking.

Following his opening keynote, Paul was joined by Silvia Mosquera, Chief Commercial and Revenue Officer, TAP Portugal; Anthony Woodman, Vice President Customer Journeys & Reward, Virgin Atlantic; and moderator Jennifer Newlands, Vice President, Head of Strategy, Brand, Content, Airbus to discuss the critical passenger experience strategies transforming travel and supporting airline renewal.

Meanwhile, two conference streams ran in parallel throughout the afternoon: Rebellious Reconstruction and Integrity in Action, bringing together experts from LIFT Aero Design, TEAGUE, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Diehl Aviation, Tapis Corporation, Breeze Airways, Cirium, PriestmanGoode, Finnair, Safran Cabin, LSG Group, OneWeb, Viasat, Inmarsat, AERQ, Cathay Pacific and more.

Closing the day, Fabien Pelous, Senior Vice President Customer Experience, Air France shared candid insights into how the airline is responding to the latest trends and passenger expectations. He explained the role personalisation is playing and how Air France customers increasingly want more entertainment and better connectivity. Fabien was joined by Joe Bentley, Chief Technology Officer, Panasonic Avionics and Jochen Werner, Vice President Industrial Design, Airbus for a final panel discussion, where it was agreed that the way forward required a focus on a sustainable in-flight experience, as well as one that is more connected and personalised for every passenger.

Future cabin trends under the spotlight

Continuing to offer opportunities to learn and debate future cabin trends, CabinSpace LIVE returned to the AIX show floor with a programme of insightful sessions offering attendees a chance to reflect on cabin-specific trends and challenges.

A panel of senior industry executives provided attendees with an up-to-date outlook of the commercial aviation and interiors market. In this session, aviation and cabin interiors experts including Andrew Doyle, Senior Director, Market Development, Cirium; Gary Weissel, Managing Officer, Tronos Aviation Consulting, Inc.; Rob Morris, Global Head of Consultancy, Ascend by Cirium; Elizabeth deYoung, VP Marketing and Strategy, Safran Cabin; and Markus Hllerer, Head of Strategy & Products, RECARO Aircraft Seating painted an optimistic outlook for the future of their respective industries.

Morris described the industrys 10-year period of uninterrupted growth before the pandemic as driving through thick fog with our foot firmly on the accelerator, only to hit a covid-shaped brick wall. However, he was upbeat about the industrys recovery prospects, demonstrating through modelling calculated by Ciriums Ascend tool that the future was bright, with one scenario predicting the market could return to pre-pandemic levels by August 2023.

Both Morris and Weissel, however, were keen to stress these were hypothetical, complicated by many unknowns going forward, particularly the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Weissel predicted that due to said uncertainty, there might be significant changes to the supply chain, such as restructuring processes that could see more production brought in-house, something both DeYoung and Hllerer agreed with. Both too predicted a positive recovery path for the aircraft interiors industry, but the latter acknowledged that the supply chain issue was the primary obstacle before demand and investment could return.

Other sessions explored how to make sustainable aviation a reality; the how and why of accessible air travel; and the role of women in aviation. In addition, attendees were treated to an introduction to this years Crystal Cabin Award Winners. Each company was provided with an opportunity to showcase and introduce their award-winning concepts to the AIX audience, revealing the inspiration behind their innovative designs and intended applications onboard.

This included Safran Cabins Fire-Resistant Cargo Container, which took the Health and Safety Award after it wowed the jury with its ability to offer fire containment for Class D fires for up to six hours. The Thales Avionics team also headed to the CabinSpace LIVE stage to introduce its Pulse charging solution for aircraft cabins. Winner of the Materials and Components category, it uses patented power management technology to dynamically allocated power during the flight.

First-time visitor Diana Danvova, IFE Engineer, Air Astana, commented on her show experience, stating: Its my first time at Aircraft Interiors Expo. Ive met with so many interesting suppliers who will help me with upcoming projects. As my focus is on IFE, its been great to meet with so many relevant companies. There is so much innovation on display, and the chance to meet with my peers has been priceless.

Getting back to business

With so much innovation and new technology on display, attendees were focused on building existing and new relationships at AIX to discuss future projects, facilitated by the shows innovative new show planning tool: AIX Connect. Designed to help key airline buyers meet exhibitors during the show to build business connections and discuss new projects, the show planning tool has never been more relevant as the aircraft interiors industry reconvenes for the first time since the global pandemic began. It demonstrated its pivotal role in facilitating the industrys desire to network, with more than 5,000 confirmed meetings across the three days of the show.

Commenting on the success of Aircraft Interiors Expo this year, Polly Magraw, AIX Event Director, said: We have been completely blown away by the response from exhibitors and attendees this year. The atmosphere at this years show was extremely positive and demonstrated the appetite among all attendees to reconnect and drive the industrys recovery. Can Artificial Intelligence Be Creative? – Discovery Institute

Some have claimed AI is creative. But creativity is a fuzzy term. To talk fruitfully about creativity, the term must be defined so that everyone is talking about the same thing and no one is bending the meaning to fit their purpose. Lets explore what creativity is, and it will become clear that, properly defined, AI is no more creative than a pencil.

Lady Ada Lovelace (18151852), daughter of the poet George Gordon, Lord Byron, was the first computer programmer, writing algorithms for a machine that was planned but never built. She also was quite possibly the first to note that computers will not be creative that is, they cannot create something new. She wrote in 1842 that the computer has no pretensions whatever to originate anything. It can do [only] whatever we know how to order it to perform.

Alan Turing disagreed. Turing is often called the father of computer science, having established the idea for modern computers in the 1930s. Turing argued that we cant even be sure that humans create, because humans do nothing new under the sun but they do surprise us. Likewise, he said, Machines take me by surprise with great frequency.So perhaps, he argued, it is the element of surprise thats relevant, not the ability to originate something new.

Machines can surprise us if theyre programmed by humans to surprise us, or if the programmer has made a mistake and thus experienced an unexpected outcome.Often, though, surprise occurs as a result of successful implementation of a computer search that explores a myriad of solutions for a problem. The solution chosen by the computer can be unexpected. The computer code that searches among different solutions, though, is not creative. The creativity credit belongs to the computer programmer who chose the set of solutions to be explored. One could give examples from computer searches for making the best move in the game of GO and for simulated swarms. Both results are surprising and unexpected, but there is no creativity contributed from computer code.

Alan Turing, an atheist, wanted to show we are machines and that computers could be creative. Turing equated intelligence with problem solving, did not consider questions of consciousness and emotion, and referred to people as human computers. Turings version of the imitation game was proposed to show that computers could duplicate the conversational human. This is why the biographical movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Turing was titledThe Imitation Game.

How can computers imitate humans, according to Turing?The imitation game (which came to be called the Turing test)simply asks whether, in a conversational exchange using text (that is, an exchange in which the participants are hidden from each other), a sufficiently sophisticated computer can be distinguished from a human. If a questioner gets lucid, human-sounding answers from the computer, and believes the computer is in fact a human typing in answers from another room, then the test has been passed. (Incidentally, the converse of the Turing test is easy. Simply ask it to calculate the cube root of 12 out to 10 significant figures. If the answer is almost immediate, you are talking to a computer.)

There are those who claim that todays chatbots have passed the Turing test. Most famously, a computer program known as Eugene Goostman purportedly passed. One posted subtitle claiming this reads, Eugene Goostman fools 33% of interrogators into thinking it is human, in what is seen as a milestone in artificial intelligence.

But those making a test often cheat to tweak the outcome. Thats what Goostmans programmers did. Goostman supposedly was a Ukrainian, which meant English was not his first language, so his poor grammar could be excused. He was supposedly a teenager, so any lack of depth of understanding could be chalked up to his nave intellect. Likewise, his tendency to be silly and deflect questions could be considered typical teenage behavior. In short, Goostmans software character was gamed to pass the Turing test.

Here are a couple of examples of an exchange between Goostman and his questioner. Goostman is first asked a question proposed in the first line of the lyrics of the song Close to You,popularized by theCarpenters:

Questioner: Why do birds suddenly appear?

Goostman: Just because 2 plus 2 is 5! By the way, whats your occupation? I mean could you tell me about your work?

We see here an often-used cheat in chatbots. If an answer is not known, the chatbot responds with an unrelated question to derail the conversations direction.

Heres another exchange with Eugene Goostman:

Questioner: It is ok, I get sick of sick people. How is your stomach feeling today? Is it upset maybe?

Goostman: I think you cant smile at all. I bet you work in a funeral agency.

As you can see, Goostmans answers here are elusively non-responsive.

Selmer Bringsjord correctly notes the Turing test is gamed by programmers. Gamed here is a nice word for being an elusive cheat. As Bringsjord writes, Though progress toward Turings dream is being made, its coming only on the strength ofclever but shallow trickery.

When gaming the system, chatbots can deflect detection by answering questions with other questions, giving evasive answers, or admitting ignorance. They display general intellectual shallowness as regards creativity and depth of understanding.

Goostman answered questions with questions like, By the way, whats your occupation? He also tried to change topics with conversational whiplash responses like I bet you work in a funeral agency. These are examples of the clever but shallow trickery Bringsjord criticized.

What, then, do Turing tests prove? Only that clever programmers can trick gullible or uninitiated people into believing theyre interacting with a human. Mistaking something for human does not make it human. Programming to shallowly mimic thought is not the same thing as thinking. Rambling randomness (such as the change-of-topic questions Goostman spit out) does not display creativity.

I propose to consider the question, Can machines think? Turing said. Ironically, Turing not only failed in his attempt to show that machines can be conversationally creative, but also developed computer science that shows humans are non-computable.

Glorikian’s New Book Sheds Light on Artificial Intelligence Advances in the Healthcare Field – The Armenian Mirror-Spectator

After describing various ways in which AI and big data are involved already in our daily lives, ranging from the food we eat, the cars we drive and the things we buy, he concludes that it is leading to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a phrase coined by Klaus Schwab, the head of the World Economic Forum. All aspects of life will be transformed in a way analogous to the prior industrial revolutions (first the use of steam and waterpower, second the expansion of electricity and telegraph cables, and third, the digital revolution of the end of the 20th century).

At the heart of the book are the chapters in which he explains what data and AI have already accomplished for our health and what they can do in the future. The ever-expanding amount of personal data available combined with advances in AI allows for increasing accuracy of diagnoses, treatments and better sensors and software. Glorikian notes that today there are over 350,000 different healthcare apps and the mobile health market is expected to approach $290 billion in revenue by 2025.

Glorikian employs a light, informal style of writing, with references to pop culture such as Star Trek. He asks the reader questions and intersperses each chapter with what he calls sidebars. They are short illustrative stories or sets of examples. For example, AI Saved My Life: The Watch That Called 911 for a Fallen Cyclist (p. 68) starts with a man who lost consciousness after falling off his bike, and then lists other ways current phones can save lives. Other sidebars explain basic concepts like the meaning of genes and DNA; or about gene editing with CRISPR.

Present and Future Advances

Before getting into more complex issues, Glorikian describes what be most familiar to readers: the use of AI-enabled smartphone apps which guide individuals towards optimal diets and exercising as well as allow for group activities through remote communication and virtual reality. There are already countless AI-enabled smartphone apps and sensors allowing us to track our movements and exercise, as well as our diets, sleep and even stress levels. In the future, their approach will become more tailored to individual needs and data, including genomics, environment, lifestyle and molecular biology, with specific recommendations.

He speculates as to what innovations the near future may bring, remarking: What isnt clear is just how long it will take us to move from this point of collecting and finding patterns in the data, to one where we (and our healthcare providers are actively using those patterns to make accurate predications about our health. He gives the example of having an app to track migraine headaches, which can find and analyze patterns in the data (do they occur on nights when you have eaten a particular kind of food or traveled on a plane, for example). Eventually, at a more advanced stage, it might suggest you take an earlier flight or eat in a different restaurant that does not use ingredients that might be migraine triggers for you.

Healthcare will become more decentralized, Glorikian predicts, with people no longer forced to wait hours in hospital emergency rooms. Instead, some issues can be determined through phone apps and remote specialists, and others can be handled at rapid care facilities or pharmacies. Hospitals themselves will become more efficient with command centers monitoring the usage of various resources and using AI to monitor various aspects of patient health. Telerobotics will allow access to specialized surgeons located in major urban centers even if there are none in the local hospital.

In the chapter on genetics, Glorikian presents three ways in which unlocking the secrets of an individuals genome can have practical health consequences right now. The first is the prevention of bad drug reactions through pharmacogenomics, or learning how genes affect response to drugs. Second are enhanced screening and preventative treatment for hereditary cancer syndromes. One major advancement just starting to be used more, notes Glorikian, is liquid biopsy, in which a blood sample allows identification of tumor cells as opposed to standard physical biopsies. It is less invasive and sometimes more accurate for detecting cancers prior to the appearance of symptoms. The third way is DNA sequencing at birth to screen for many disorders which are treatable when caught early. The future may see corrections of various mutations through gene editing.

He points out the various benefits in the health field of collecting large sets of data. For example, it allows the use of AI or machine learning to better read mammogram results and to better predict which patients would see benefit from various procedures like cardiac resynchronization therapy or who had greater risk for cardiovascular disease. There is hope that this approach can help detect the start and the progression of diseases like Alzheimers or diabetic retinopathy. Ultimately it may even be able to predict fairly reliably when individuals would die.

At present, AI accessing sufficient data is helping identify new drugs, saving time and money by using statistical models to predict whether the new drugs will work even before trials. AI can determine which variables or dimensions to remove when making complex computations of models in order to speed up computational processes. This is important when there are large numbers of variables and vast amounts of data.

Glorikian does not miss the opportunity to use the current Covid-19 crisis as a teaching moment. In a chapter called Solving the Pandemic Problem, Glorikian discusses the role AI, machine learning and big data played in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, in spotting it early on, predicting where it might travel next, sequencing its genome in days, and developing diagnostic tests, vaccines and treatments. Vaccine development, like drug development, is much faster today than even 20 years ago, thanks to computational modeling and virtual clinical trials and studies.

Potential Problems

Glorikian does not shy away from raising some of the potential problems associated with the wide use of AI in medicine, such as the threat to patient privacy and ethical questions about what machines should be allowed to do. Should genetic editing be allowed in humans for looks, intelligence or various types of talents? Should AI predictions of lifespan and dates of death be used? What types of decisions should machines be allowed to make in healthcare? And what sort of triage should be allowed in case of limited medical resources (if AI predicts one patient is for example ten times more likely to die than another despite medical intervention)? There are grave dangers if hackers access databanks or medical machines.

There are also potential operational problems with using data as a basis for AI, such as outdated information, biased data, missing data (and how it is handled), misanalyzed or differently analyzed data.

Despite all these issues, Glorikian is optimistic about the value of AI. He concludes, But despite the risk, for the most part, the benefits outweigh the potential downsidesThe data we willingly give up makes our lives better.

Armenian Connection

When asked at the end of June, 2022 how Armenia compares with the US and other parts of the world in the use of AI in healthcare, he made the distinction between the Armenian healthcare system and Armenian technology that is directed at the world healthcare system.

On the one hand, he said, I dont know of a lot that is being incorporated into the healthcare system, although we do have a national electronic medical record system that they have really been improving on a consistent basis. Having a call management record system throughout the country will provide data for the next step in use of AI, and that, he said is very exciting.

On the other hand, for technology companies involved in healthcare and biotechnology in Armenia, he said, I would always like to see more, but there are some really interesting companies that have sprouted up over the last five years. At the end of 2018, Glorikian met with then Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to discuss launching the Armenian Genome project to expand the scope of genetic studies in the field of healthcare. He said that this undertaking was halted for reasons beyond his understanding. He said, My lesson learned was you can move a lot faster and have significant impact by focusing on the private sector.

Indeed, this is what he does, as an individual investor and as a member of the Angel Investor Club of Armenia. While the group looks at a broad range of companies, mainly technology driven, he and a few other people in it take a look at those which are involved in healthcare. In fact, he is going to California at the very end of June to learn more about a robot companion for children called Moxie, prepared by Embodied, Inc., a company founded by veteran roboticist Paolo Pirjanian. Pirjanian, who was a guest on Glorikians podcast several weeks ago, lives in California, but Glorikian said that the back end of his companys work is done in Armenia.

Glorikian added that he is always finding out about or running into Armenians in the diaspora doing work with AI.

Changes

When asked what has changed since the publication of the book last year, he replied, Things are getting better! While hardware does not change overnight, he said that there have been incremental improvements to software during the period of time it took to write the book and then have it published. He said, For someone reading the book now, you are probably saying, I had no idea that this was even available. For someone like me, you already feel a little behind.

Readers of the book have already begun to contact Glorikian with anecdotes about what it led them to find out and do. He hopes the book will continue to reach more people. He said, The biggest thing I get out of it is when someone says I learned this and I did something about it. When individuals have access to more quantifiable data, not only can they manage their own health better, but they also provide their doctors with more data longitudinally that helps the doctor to be more effective. How artificial intelligence is boosting crop yield to feed the world – Freethink

Over the last several decades, genetic research has seen incredible advances in gene sequencing technologies. In 2004, scientists completed the Human Genome Project, an ambitious project to sequence the human genome, which cost $3 billion and took 10 years. Now, a person can get their genome sequenced for less than $1,000 and within about 24 hours.

Scientists capitalized on these advances by sequencing everything from the elusive giant squid to the Ethiopian eggplant. With this technology came promises of miraculous breakthroughs: all diseases would be cured and world hunger would be a thing of the past.

So, where are these miracles?

We need about 60 to 70% more food production by 2050.

In 2015, a group of researchers founded Yield10 Bioscience, an agriculture biotech company that aimed to use artificial intelligence to start making those promises into reality.

Two things drove the development of Yield10 Bioscience.

One, obviously, [the need for] global food security: we need about 60 to 70% more food production by 2050, explained Dr. Oliver Peoples, CEO of Yield10 Bioscience, in an interview with Freethink. And then, of course, CRISPR.

It turns out that having the tools to sequence DNA is only step one of manufacturing the miracles we were promised.

The second step is figuring out what a sequence of DNA actually does. In other words, its one thing to discover a gene, and it is another thing entirely to discover a genes role in a specific organism.

In order to do this, scientists manipulate the gene: delete it from an organism and see what functions are lost, or add it to an organism and see what is gained. During the early genetics revolution, although scientists had tools to easily and accurately sequence DNA, their tools to manipulate DNA were labor-intensive and cumbersome.

Its one thing to discover a gene, and it is another thing entirely to discover a genes role in a specific organism.

Around 2012, CRISPR technology burst onto the scene, and it changed everything. Scientists had been investigating CRISPR a system that evolved in bacteria to fight off viruses since the 80s, but it took 30 years for them to finally understand how they could use it to edit genes in any organism.

Suddenly, scientists had a powerful tool that could easily manipulate genomes. Equipped with DNA sequencing and editing tools, scientists could complete studies that once took years or even decades in mere months.

Promises of miracles poured back in, with renewed vigor: CRISPR would eliminate genetic disorders and feed the world! But of course, there is yet another step: figuring out which genes to edit.

Over the last couple of decades, researchers have compiled databases of millions of genes. For example, GenBank, the National Institute of Healths (NIH) genetic sequence database, contains 38,086,233 genes, of which only tens of thousands have some functional information.

For example, ARGOS is a gene involved in plant growth. Consequently, it is a very well-studied gene. Scientists found that genetically engineering Arabidopsis, a fast-growing plant commonly used to study plant biology, to express lots of ARGOS made the plant grow faster.

Dozens of other plants have ARGOS (or at least genes very similar to it), such as pineapple, radish, and winter squash. Those plants, however, are hard to genetically manipulate compared to Arabidopsis. Thus, ARGOSs function in crops in general hasnt been as well studied.

The big crop companies are struggling to figure out what to do with CRISPR.

CRISPR suddenly changed the landscape for small groups of researchers hoping to innovate in agriculture. It was an affordable technology that anyone could use but no one knew what to do with it. Even the largest research corporations in the world dont have the resources to test all the genes that have been identified.

I think if you talk to all the big crop companies, theyve all got big investments in CRISPR. And I think theyre all struggling with the same question, which is, This is a great tool. What do I do with it? said Dr. Peoples.

The algorithm can identify genes that act at a fundamental level in crop metabolism.

The holy grail of crop science, according to Dr. Peoples, would be a tool that could identify three or four genetic changes that would double crop production for whatever youre growing.

With CRISPR, those changes could be made right now. However, there needs to be a way to identify those changes, and that information is buried in the massive databases.

To develop the tool that can dig them out, Dr. Peoples team merged artificial intelligence with synthetic biology, a field of science that involves redesigning organisms to have useful new abilities, such as increasing crop yield or bioplastic production.

This union created Gene Ranking Artificial Intelligence Network (GRAIN), an algorithm that evaluates scientific databases like GenBank and identifies genes that act at a fundamental level in crop metabolism.

That fundamental level aspect is one of the keys to GRAINs long-term success. It identifies genes that are common across multiple crop types, so when a powerful gene is identified, it can be used across multiple crop types.

For example, using the GRAIN platform, Dr. Peoples and his team identified four genes that may significantly impact seed oil content in Camelina, a plant similar to rapeseed (true canola oil). When the researchers increased the activity of just one of those genes via CRISPR, the plants had a 10% increase in seed oil content.

Its not quite a miracle yet, but with more advances in gene editing and AI happening all the time, the promises of the genetic revolution are finally starting to pay off.

When you picture a hospital radiologist, you might think of a specialist who sits in a dark room and spends hours poring over X-rays to make diagnoses. Contrast that with your dentist, who in addition to interpreting X-rays must also perform surgery, manage staff, communicate with patients, and run their business. When dentists analyze X-rays, they do so in bright rooms and on computers that arent specialized for radiology, often with the patient sitting right next to them.

Is it any wonder, then, that dentists given the same X-ray might propose different treatments?

Dentists are doing a great job given all the things they have to deal with, says Wardah Inam SM 13, PhD 16.

Inam is the co-founder of Overjet, a company using artificial intelligence to analyze and annotate X-rays for dentists and insurance providers. Overjet seeks to take the subjectivity out of X-ray interpretations to improve patient care.

Its about moving toward more precision medicine, where we have the right treatments at the right time, says Inam, who co-founded the company with Alexander Jelicich 13. Thats where technology can help. Once we quantify the disease, we can make it very easy to recommend the right treatment.

Overjet has been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to detect and outline cavities and to quantify bone levels to aid in the diagnosis of periodontal disease, a common but preventable gum infection that causes the jawbone and other tissues supporting the teeth to deteriorate.

In addition to helping dentists detect and treat diseases, Overjets software is also designed to help dentists show patients the problems theyre seeing and explain why theyre recommending certain treatments.

The company has already analyzed tens of millions of X-rays, is used by dental practices nationwide, and is currently working with insurance companies that represent more than 75 million patients in the U.S. Inam is hoping the data Overjet is analyzing can be used to further streamline operations while improving care for patients.

Its been a whirlwind journey for Inam, who knew nothing about the dental industry until a bad experience piqued her interest in 2018.

Getting to the root of the problem

Inam came to MIT in 2010, first for her masters and then her PhD in electrical engineering and computer science, and says she caught the bug for entrepreneurship early on.

For me, MIT was a sandbox where you could learn different things and find out what you like and what you don't like, Inam says. Plus, if you are curious about a problem, you can really dive into it.

While taking entrepreneurship classes at the Sloan School of Management, Inam eventually started a number of new ventures with classmates.

I didn't know I wanted to start a company when I came to MIT, Inam says. I knew I wanted to solve important problems. I went through this journey of deciding between academia and industry, but I like to see things happen faster and I like to make an impact in my lifetime, and that's what drew me to entrepreneurship.

During her postdoc in the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Inam and a group of researchers applied machine learning to wireless signals to create biomedical sensors that could track a persons movements, detect falls, and monitor respiratory rate.

She didnt get interested in dentistry until after leaving MIT, when she changed dentists and received an entirely new treatment plan. Confused by the change, she asked for her X-rays and asked other dentists to have a look, only to receive still another variation in diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

At that point, Inam decided to dive into dentistry for herself, reading books on the subject, watching YouTube videos, and eventually interviewing dentists. Before she knew it, she was spending more time learning about dentistry than she was at her job.

The same week Inam quit her job, she learned about MITs Hacking Medicine competition and decided to participate. Thats where she started building her team and getting connections. Overjets first funding came from the Media Lab-affiliated investment group the E14 Fund.

The E14 fund wrote the first check, and I don't think we would've existed if it wasn't for them taking a chance on us, she says.

Inam learned that a big reason for variation in treatment recommendations among dentists is the sheer number of potential treatment options for each disease. A cavity, for instance, can be treated with a filling, a crown, a root canal, a bridge, and more.

When it comes to periodontal disease, dentists must make millimeter-level assessments to determine disease severity and progression. The extent and progression of the disease determines the best treatment.

I felt technology could play a big role in not only enhancing the diagnosis but also to communicate with the patients more effectively so they understand and don't have to go through the confusing process I did of wondering who's right, Inam says.

Overjet began as a tool to help insurance companies streamline dental claims before the company began integrating its tool directly into dentists offices. Every day, some of the largest dental organizations nationwide are using Overjet, including Guardian Insurance, Delta Dental, Dental Care Alliance, and Jefferson Dental and Orthodontics.

Today, as a dental X-ray is imported into a computer, Overjets software analyzes and annotates the images automatically. By the time the image appears on the computer screen, it has information on the type of X-ray taken, how a tooth may be impacted, the exact level of bone loss with color overlays, the location and severity of cavities, and more.

The analysis gives dentists more information to talk to patients about treatment options.

Now the dentist or hygienist just has to synthesize that information, and they use the software to communicate with you, Inam says. So, they'll show you the X-rays with Overjet's annotations and say, 'You have 4 millimeters of bone loss, it's in red, that's higher than the 3 millimeters you had last time you came, so I'm recommending this treatment.

Overjet also incorporates historical information about each patient, tracking bone loss on every tooth and helping dentists detect cases where disease is progressing more quickly.

Weve seen cases where a cancer patient with dry mouth goes from nothing to something extremely bad in six months between visits, so those patients should probably come to the dentist more often, Inam says. Its all about using data to change how we practice care, think about plans, and offer services to different types of patients.

The operating system of dentistry

Overjets FDA clearances account for two highly prevalent diseases. They also put the company in a position to conduct industry-level analysis and help dental practices compare themselves to peers.

We use the same tech to help practices understand clinical performance and improve operations, Inam says. We can look at every patient at every practice and identify how practices can use the software to improve the care they're providing.

Moving forward, Inam sees Overjet playing an integral role in virtually every aspect of dental operations.

These radiographs have been digitized for a while, but they've never been utilized because the computers couldn't read them, Inam says. Overjet is turning unstructured data into data that we can analyze. Right now, we're building the basic infrastructure. Eventually we want to grow the platform to improve any service the practice can provide, basically becoming the operating system of the practice to help providers do their job more effectively.

Howard discussed how helpful NatGeo was in their efforts, as well as the real divers/rescuers Rick Stanton, John Volanthen, and Jason Mallinson, because there wasn't that much footage of the actual rescue part of things. He said:

"There were some schematics that we were able to get. Nat Geo loaned them to us, because Brian Grazer and I have done a lot of work with Nat Geo [laughs] and they were great. Schematics made of the cave when it was dry. The trick here in condensing this and making it a movie, making it something visceral, entertaining, suspenseful, is to find those key points. Find those breaking points where it really was do or die, either physically or emotionally. So we went through the caves, and honestly, the guys would just point it out and say, 'This is a particularly difficult [spot]. Here's where a mishap happened. Here's where there was a surprise. This is the way the current changed. This is the way the visibility shifted.' And we just kept taking notes and building sequences around that."

I cannot imagine the terror those kids must have felt, and as someone who has a fear of caves, I'm hoping this doesn't give me months of nightmares. That said,I want to watch, just to once again marvel at the good that sometimes people will do for each other. It's probably a story we all need right now.

"Thirteen Lives" will be released in select theaters on July 29, 2022, for a limited one-week engagement, and will launch globally on Prime Video on August 5, 2022.

Home renovations can be a real chore not to mention expensive. If its a change that will improve a home you plan to stay in for a long time, go ahead and take on the challenge.

But sometimes, homeowners can be fooled into thinking an update will greatly improve their homes resale value. And thats not always the case.

Remodeling magazines 2022 Cost vs. Value Report looks at how well 22 remodeling projects retain their value at resale in 150 U.S. markets. In some cases, youll barely recoup half the renovation cost when it comes time to sell.

The following are the home renovations with the absolute worst payoff, starting with the project in the No. 5 spot.

National average cost: $175,473

Average cost recouped: 53.4%

The study doesnt just look at remodels, but at additions as well, meaning adding a completely new section to a house. The addition of a midrange master suite can cost more than $175,000 and recoups just over half that when the time comes to sell. But before you sell, youd be enjoying a pretty luxe new bedroom. The Remodeling magazine estimate assumes youve added a walk-in closet, dressing area and bathroom with double-bowl vanity, freestanding soaker tub and a separate ceramic tile shower.

National average cost: $158,015

Average cost recouped: 52.5%

If you love to cook or entertain in your kitchen, you may want to splurge on an upscale remodel but note that it will cost more than $158,000. While you might not be doing it for resale value, youll certainly enjoy the perks, which include high-end appliances, custom cabinets, stone countertops and new lighting.

National average cost: $63,986

Average cost recouped: 51.8%

One more bathroom may not recoup its costs entirely, but youll obviously find it helpful, especially if you have a large family or plenty of visitors. A midrange bathroom addition includes adding a 6-by-8-foot space much smaller than an upscale version, but more practical and less pricey.

National average cost: $114,773

Average cost recouped: 51.5%

If you can spend more than $100,000 adding a bathroom, youre certainly living well, and maybe you wont mind that youll only recoup about 50% of what you put into it. But you may never want to leave this new 100-square-foot bathroom, which includes a shower, soaker tub, two medicine cabinets, stone countertop with two sinks, heated floors and more.

National average cost: $356,945

Average cost recouped: 46.3%

Drum roll, please the home renovation with the absolute worst payoff, according to the report, is an upscale master suite addition. But to be fair, this is a monster project, including a large sleeping area, master bath, custom bookcases, high-end gas fireplace, walk-in closet, hospitality counter with bar sink, fridge and microwave, soundproofing and in-floor heating. Were betting those who have more than $350,000 to spend on a master suite like this arent going to need to recoup a lot when they go to sell.

Legislative Republicans, political action committees, donated thousands to vulnerable incumbents – Salt Lake Tribune

A handful of Republican legislators are facing tough primary elections on Tuesday. According to recent financial disclosure filings, several candidates received hefty campaign contributions from their colleagues in the Utah Legislature and prominent political action committees.

House and Senate Republicans have used their political action committees to make significant financial donations to fellow Republicans this year. Senate Republicans have donated $35,000 each to Sens. Evan Vickers, Jerry Stevenson, Keith Grover and Ann Millner, who are all on Tuesdays primary ballot. The PAC also donated $10,000 to Sens. Kirk Cullimore, Scott Sandall, Daniel Thatcher and Ron Winterton to help them fend off challengers for the GOP nomination at party conventions.

House Republicans donated $4,000 to eight incumbents with primary challengers on Tuesday. Reps. Melissa Garff Ballard, Jeff Stenquist, Ray Ward, Susan Pulsipher, Kera Birkeland, Kelly Miles, Mike Petersen and Christine Watkins received the $4,000 donations from House Republicans. Another nine House Republicans were given $2,000 donations ahead of party conventions.

House Speaker Brad Wilson also donated to Republican House incumbents through his leadership PAC. Birkeland and Ward received $3,000, while Ballard was given $2,000. Wilsons PAC made a $1,500 donation to Miles, Watkins and Pulsipher. He also kicked in $2,000 to Paul Cutler, who is running to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Tim Hawkes.

Senate President Stuart Adams is also in the incumbent protection business. His leadership PAC donated $5,000 to Grover for his primary matchup against Brandon Beckham.

Several outside political action committees have also jumped into the fray to shore up some Republican incumbents.

Mitt Romneys Believe in America PAC donated $10,000 to Reps. Stenquist, Ward, Pulsipher and Miles. They also gave $10,000 to Paul Cutlers campaign.

The Utah Association of Realtors PAC paid $3,100 to run digital ads on behalf of Sen. Millner and almost $2,500 for a mailer promoting Paul Cutler. They reported another $572 on get-out-the-vote (GOTV) operations for Cutlers campaign. The PAC also donated $10,000 to Speaker Wilsons leadership PAC.

The Count My Vote PAC donated $26,000 to several candidates to assist their efforts in gathering enough signatures to qualify for the primary ballot. Sens. Evan Vickers and Keith Grover each received $5,000. Sen. Jerry Stevenson was given $2,000, and Democrat Nate Blouin received $2,500 for his race against longtime incumbent Sen. Gene Davis. The CMV PAC recorded a $50,000 donation from Gail Miller.

Westworld Season 4 Episode 1 Review: The Auguries – Den of Geek

Christina (Evan Rachel Wood) seems trapped. She gets up, zips up her bed, raises the blinds on her New York City apartment, then walks the High Line on her way to work, where she pitches plots for games at Olympiad Entertainment. Shes not great at her job; nobody wants romance and happy endings, people want melodrama, transgressions, and lots of downer endings. Not a natural choice for someone who seems to see the beauty in the world around her. She leaves work, goes back home, and repeats the whole process again the next day, with only sporadic interruptions by a deranged man calling her phone hundreds of times a day, begging her to change her stories, begging that his life has been destroyed by her game. Engaging him only escalates the behavior; its all a big mystery waiting to be unraveled.

While Caleb tries to forget his past and Christina tries to forge a future, Maeve (Thandiwe Newton) is hiding from the ambitious, dangerous man in charge of Delos, William (Ed Harris), who has emerged from hiding and resumed his mad quest to hunt down and exterminate the escaped Hosts, starting with Maeve, and supporters of hosts like Caleb. He also kills off a Mexican cartel and takes over a data storage facility built into the Hoover Dam in the cold opening, so William might have been laying low, but hes still thinking big and solving his problems with violence. His emergence spells trouble for both Maeve and Caleb. As it turns out, paranoia can be pretty useful when youre enemies with a vengeful billionaire with a taste for ten-gallon hats, revolvers, and killer robots like the repurposed Col. Brigham (Frederic Lehne) and Hector (Rodrigo Santoro).

Wont Maeve be thrilled if she sees him again after so long?

It seems as though time jumps are the biggest new trend on television, or at least the genre television I tend to watch. It makes sense, though; if you dont want to wade through the fallout of an epic season finale, just move forward until its settled down and you can work on telling whatever story youre really looking to tell. In this case, Maeve, William, and Caleb seem to be getting ready to finish what started last season and Christina (or perhaps Dolores?) may be on the cusp of finding a familiar partner to ride shotgun with her on the journey of life. Im not sure whats getting set up, but Lisa Joy and Will Soodiks script is solid work, with Christina being an interesting wrinkle on the traditional role of Dolores as a farmers daughter artist who dreams bright and big, and Caleb settling back into familiar roles as a co-conspirator battling against the wealth and power of a billionaire. Maeves tongue is sharper than ever after 8 long years of living in the wilderness. The seeds planted for Christina also seem like theyll be interested, especially considering just who stepped in to prevent her from being battered by her stalker.

Eight years gave humanity an opportnity to rebuild that apparently wasnt taken, aside from a more open job market. Roles were inevitably settled back into, and the performers on Westworld have no issues settling back into their roles. Aaron Pauls Caleb is happier, more settled, despite his lot in life not really changing all that much. Christina is a new character, but Evan Rachel Wood imbues her with the weight of Dolores old soul with ease. Thandiwe Newton still steals every scene shes in with a cutting glance; wry amusement drips off every word she utters in her scene with Caleb. Ed Harris may or may not be playing a host version of William, but hes still the no-nonsense, intimidating threat hes always been, whether hes staring at Caleb across a crowded plaza or shaking down a Mexican organized crime syndicate.

Director Richard J. Lewis does a very good job handling the table-setting sections of the story. We dont really know who Christina is, or why she looks like Dolores, but the scenes of her traveling through New New York are tense, especially once her stalker is actively after her, drawing mazes in dirt on her fire escape and watching her from afar. Calebs scenes are more grounded, but the character still seethes with internal struggle that reflects wonderfully in Aaron Pauls body language; hes trying to be normal, but hes not sure what that is after dedicating so much of his life to war. William is William; Ed Harris is the most dangerous pensioner to ever shrug on a suit jacket, and he knows it.
