Want to see how ChatGPT wrote this story? Click here.

It only took artificial intelligence seconds to replace Zan Comerford.

Comerford, the founder of Litework Marketing in Nelson, had been writing news releases throughout the day when her husband insisted on showing what ChatGPT could do. He demonstrated by asking it to write a release similar to what she had been working on.

It generated a document that was a reasonable facsimile of her work, and did in less than a minute what shed just spent hours on.

I was sunk. I was like, there goes my job, there goes the future of humanity.

Since the public version of ChatGPT launched in November, it has proven to be a generational moment in the history of the technology. Its as important as the introduction of the iPhone, or the emergence of social media.

AI is omnipresent in todays world. Its working behind the scenes every day on phones, Google searches even Netflix.

But ChatGPT is different: Its a natural language generator that pulls information from the internet to form what is the most statistically likely response to user questions or commands, known as prompts. And it does so in a human voice that can be conversational and even a little disarming.

Its responses are seemingly limited only by ones imagination. Ask it to write a short story about aliens who want ice cream and it will start typing in front of your eyes. Ask it to provide a vegetarian recipe for dinner, or a weekly exercise plan, or for the meaning of life and its there in moments.

The emergence of whats known as Generative AI has come as a surprise to people in Nelsons tech community.

Shortly after ChatGPTs release, Brad Pommen of Nelsons SMRT1 Technologies was driving with some of his employees to meetings in Vancouver. The company, which specializes in touchscreen-based vending machines, had previously tested chatbots and decided they werent very good.

But on the trip, designer Greg Coppen began playing with ChatGPT and the group soon realized its potential.

Were all just spitballing and entering this text and getting instant results, says Pommen. It doesnt replace anybody at this point, but its not far off from needing less resources and doing more with less that really caught my attention.

Its also far from a finished product. The latest version GPT-4, which was released by the American company OpenAI in mid-March, may be able to pass a bar exam, but it still makes factual errors (ask it to write your online bio and youll probably be surprised by the response). Even though it can write in Shakespearean English, its writing probably wouldnt have impressed The Bard.

Thats provided some peace for Comerford.

She began experimenting with ChatGPT and found it worked best as an idea generator. It couldnt provide inspired marketing campaigns for Comerfords clients in the tourism and cannabis industries, but it could be used to finesse her own thoughts and help Comerford overcome occasional writers block.

It was a tool, she realized, and not one that would soon take her job.

If a machine gives you the bones, then you can build from there. I havent experienced anything with AI or ChatGPT yet that I would publish without tweaking, so that makes me feel a little bit more relieved.

Pommen has come to the same conclusion.

SMRT1 has begun using ChatGPT to write grant proposals, summarize points and even build pro and con lists. What will it be able to do in a month or a year? Pommen is intrigued to find out.

Im always looking for the positive side of things. I am never focused on the negative. And I see this as just another opportunity of creativity exemplified.

The classroom is real. The teacher isnt

Keeping students engaged can be a chore for Hazel Mousley.

Mousley is an online French tutor with students ranging in age from four to 80. The younger they are, the harder it can be for Mousley to connect with them.

But they seemingly respond to AI.

One of Mousleys students is a 10-year-old girl who loves figure skating and is, unsurprisingly, not as invested in her French homework. Mousleys solution was to ask ChatGPT to write a short play in French about a girl and her stuffed elephant at a skating competition. It was a hit with the student.

The play is very short, and Im just astounded at how simple the vocabulary is and how hilarious it is.

Every tutor Mousley knows is using ChatGPT. Not only can it interpret a students poor grammar and spelling prompts, it also responds with empathy. Her students treat it like a friend and Mousley sometimes feels like she is only a witness to the lesson.

The loss of direct influence can be worth it. Mousley says the right prompts provide exercises geared at any level of language.

If I have a student learning a very specific grammar piece, it might be hard to find exercises. It would take me a long time to create an exercise on that. I can just say [to ChatGPT], Write whatever using this grammar concept as much as possible. And then, holy crow, it creates some very compelling pieces doing that.

But if ChatGPT can ask questions, it can also give students passable answers that have prompted plagiarism concerns among educators.

To illustrate this, Dr. Theresa Southam, Selkirk Colleges co-ordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre, suggests a prompt: Ask ChatGPT to write 1,000 words on the British North America Act of 1867, which led to the creation of Canada. The AI responds with a serviceable essay in seconds.

This, Southam says, should challenge instructors to ask students more nuanced questions. When one Selkirk teacher found ChatGPT nearly passed their online course, Southam says, it encouraged them to review their material.

As soon as you get into creative and critical thinking, thats where ChatGPT has trouble and thats where we want to take our work, says Southam. We want to have creative and critical thinkers.

Southam has spotted other errors. The chatbot sometimes pulls information from sources like blogs that dont hold up to critical analysis. Its answers are pancultural and struggle with regional context. ChatGPT also doesnt have access to oral histories, and omits cultures with poor access to the internet.

ChatGPT may have answers for everything, but it cant tell you much more about your community than Wikipedia can.

Im realizing that its only one part of human collective intelligence thats being represented in the results that are getting spit out.

The master and apprentice

Abby Wilson points to four images of Kootenay Lake on her screen and begins picking them apart. One has missing reflections. Another has incomplete sun beams. None of them catch the eye.

Each is a variation on a poor picture she took from her phone of a ferry crossing the lake, then uploaded to the AI image creator Midjourney. Wilson, a Nelson-based landscape painter, can see errors in each image. But she can also see how they might be improved.

In her studio, Wilson paints her own image based on elements suggested by Midjourney. The sun breaking through clouds is now more dramatic, and the ferry is more visible. Using AI is giving her a different perspective on her own art.

I think first draft is a good way to think about it. Just making a visual variation like taking an old painting and asking how could I have made this better? Just different takes on an idea.

Midjourney, one of several AI image creators available for free or trial use, operates similar to ChatGPT. It scraps the internet for image data, then responds to text prompts by creating original art in any style you want.

But it comes with its own controversies. Midjourney uses image data without consent. So if youve put any type of visual art online, Midjourney could be using it without your knowledge.

Wilson acknowledges this and points out other shortcomings shes noticed. Its not particularly good at drawing real places (a request for images of Nelson returns with a city that captures its vibe but wouldnt fool any residents).

It also has a racial bias white people make up the majority of its image subjects.

Its trained on the images that we have out there, and the images we have are out there are based on our biases. So it reflects that back.

But Wilson is still excited by Midjourneys possibilities. Shes OK with the ethics of it so long as it is only using reference images she provides, and the only work she sells are her own paintings.

She also doesnt worry that AI art will replace her. All art is iterative Wilsons own style is influenced by the Group of Seven and her patrons know there is only one Abby Wilson.

I dont feel super threatened because the nature of the art market is that originals do have more value.

Nelson artist Abby Wilson in her studio with two pictures she created using AI tools. The painting on the easel was created after she uploaded a photo to Midjourney, then combined elements of the AIs suggested variations to paint the final version. Wilson also used ChatGPT to write a haiku for her young daughter about being nice to the familys cat, then used the haiku as a prompt to make the image with Midjourney, which she can be seen holding here. That certain something

AI has prompted an important question: should we use AI in these ways?

Some of the most influential voices in tech say no. Last month, an open letter signed by over 2,000 people including influential Canadian expert Yoshua Bengio called for a six-month pause on AI development until safety protocols are added.

Avi Phillips is of two minds about it. The owner of Transform Your Org, a Nelson-based digital services company, has been using ChatGPT to create content for social media posts and websites as well as develop an outline for an ebook. He describes his first experience with ChatGPT as magic.

The thing that I loved about the internet, initially, was anything I wanted to learn about was there available for me, and with ChatGPT Im back to that kind of child-like feeling of learning things at my speed.

Phillips also sees AI with open eyes. He worries about how it might be used to spread misinformation, which is easily done, since ChatGPT has no built-in fact checker, or for malicious activities like making deepfakes, which are images altered to recreate a persons likeness.

He also doesnt think OpenAI should have released ChatGPT to the public before it had finished development. Were all part of this guinea pig training for this AI.

Avi Phillips, owner of Transform Your Org, is seen here with his anime-style doppleganger. The image on the right was generated by Phillips using AI software.

Joe Boland, a Trail-based health coach and owner of Darn Strong Dads, uses ChatGPT to draft curriculums specific to his clients needs. Recently he asked it to write out a six-month schedule that included nutrition exercises, homework assignments and biweekly Zoom meetings.

The result impressed Boland, but hes found the AI fails when tasked with finding solutions to peoples health issues. It can fill a spreadsheet, yet cant understand people.

It reminds Boland of his time working at a call centre. He remembers answering the phone to frustrated customers who were immediately relieved to be speaking with a person and not navigating an automated system.

Thats why I dont necessarily fear that something like ChatGPT or AI could replace what we do, because there is a certain je ne sais quoi about needing to talk to somebody, especially with something as vulnerable as our health or our wellness or whatever else.

We need that human connection that I dont think AI can necessarily offer.

But its also not going away. As people race to figure out how AI can help or hinder them, Phillips says they also need to consider the deeper question of what this means for humanity.

One thing is for sure, we have to have this conversation. We cant pretend its not there. Its the new paradigm.

Ramayana comes to life in stunning images created with AI tool … – The Indian Express

Artificial intelligence (AI) has made it possible to imagine implausible scenarios such as a snowfall in Delhi and Kolkata and produced images of the likes of ghosts from folklore or astronauts in bridal attire. Such images have been creating waves as technology has blurred the boundaries between fiction and reality.

Now, a man has created stunning AI images to depict the Ramayana. Sachin Samuel, founder and creative director of a company called Bootpolish Talkies, shared on LinkedIn stunning images depicting the Hindu epic and wrote how it had fascinated him since childhood. He used the AI tool Midjourney to make the character sketches.

Ramayana has plenty of heart warming characters. King Dasaratha, Manthara the maidservant, Kaikeyi the youngest of King Dasarathas consorts, Ram, Sita, Lakshman, Ravana the Demon King of Lanka , Maricha, Sugreeva the Monkey King and Jambuvan, King of the Bears, Kumbharkarn, Ravanas giant brother, Indrajit, Ravanas warrior son, Jatayu, the sacred eagle. In Ramayana, even the villains, Vali, Indrajit evoke tears when they die. Thats the beauty of a great epic, where you could love and hate the villains equally. Ramayana is a visual masterpiece that takes you on a journey across the length and breadth of India. Portrait character sketches series created using Ai tool Midjourney, he wrote.

This story about AI was written by AI: How Nelson tech experts are … – Creston Valley Advance

This story was written by the AI chatbot ChatGPT-4 using Nelson Star editor-reporter Tyler Harpers notes. To see how Harper wrote this story, click here.

Zan Comerford, founder of Litework Marketing in Nelson, had her world turned upside down when she first encountered ChatGPT, the AI language model by OpenAI. Initially fearing for her job and the future of humanity, she later found that the AI could be useful as a third party to bounce ideas off of and get original ideas, although not of the same quality as human work.

If a machine gives you the bones, then you can build from there. I havent experienced anything with AI or ChatGPT yet that I would publish without tweaking, so that makes me feel a little bit more relieved, Comerford explained. She also mentioned that while some of her marketing colleagues are competitive about incorporating AI quickly, others share her concerns.

Comerford works with 10-to-15 clients in tourism events and cannabis marketing. She has found that clients are already inquiring about outsourcing work to ChatGPT, but they quickly realize the quality isnt the same. Comerford believes that people who become experts at prompting ChatGPT will become valued in the industry. However, she also expressed concerns about plagiarism and the idea that it does feel like its this tipping point where now humans are interacting with machines in a way that theres not going to be a return from.

Meanwhile, Brad Pommen, CEO of SMRT1 Technologies, and Gregg Coppen, product designer and front-end developer, have been exploring ChatGPTs potential. They found that the AI doesnt replace anybody at this point, but its not far off from needing fewer resources and doing more with less.

There was nothing that prepared me to see how far this went and how fast, said Pommen, who believes the AI will require expertise to use effectively. He compared it to a specialized tool, like a high-quality paintbrush.

On the topic of coding, Pommen doesnt think it will replace creative coders, but Coppen believes it might democratize coding. Knowing that it needs a semicolon here and a bracket and another closing bracket there and it needs to be indented this much, I think a lot of that very technical domain is going to be sort of abstracted away, Coppen explained.

Pommen remains optimistic about the future of AI, seeing it as an opportunity for creativity and programming for non-programmers. Coppen calls ChatGPT a benchmark moment in the internet. However, he also joked about not wanting his daughter to know about ChatGPT, fearing she would never write a word again.

As AI continues to evolve and impact various industries, professionals like Comerford, Pommen, and Coppen will need to adapt and find the best ways to utilize these new tools while maintaining the value of human creativity and expertise.

The classroom is real. The teacher isnt

Online French tutor Hazel Mousley is among those who have discovered the benefits of using ChatGPT for teaching languages. Mousley believes ChatGPTs humaneness and its ability to engage students make it an effective learning tool.

Mousley, whose clients range from four-to-80 years old, notes that the AI can produce interesting material for learners at any level. Her most engaged students treat ChatGPT like a friend and her as a witness to their interactions.

One of her students, a 10-year-old girl who loves figure skating, was captivated by a short play written by ChatGPT in French. The simple vocabulary and hilarious content helped the student stay focused and retain new vocabulary more effectively. Another student improved his French writing skills by conversing with ChatGPT, despite his previous struggles with spelling.

Mousley also praises ChatGPTs ability to interpret poor grammar and spelling, as well as its understanding of slang. She reveals that almost all the online French tutors she knows now use ChatGPT. However, she remains uncertain about its use in a classroom setting and its potential for misuse by lazy students.

Dr. Theresa Southam, Selkirk College co-ordinator of the Teaching and Learning Centre, initially feared that ChatGPT would make instructors obsolete but has since changed her mind. New technology comes on board, and then we realize we really need to engage with that and there are still lots of things that we can teach students that technology cant, she said.

Southam acknowledges ChatGPTs limitations, such as its lack of common sense, empathy, and personalization. She also raises concerns about cheating and the need for more nuanced questions in assessments to challenge students to think creatively and critically.

While ChatGPT can generate content from various sources, Southam points out that it may not always draw from reputable sources or provide context-specific responses. She emphasizes that the AI represents only a part of human collective intelligence and may omit perspectives from oral histories or those without access to technology.

The master and apprentice

Abby Wilson, a business analyst by day and an artist in her free time, has been experimenting with AI-generated art using Midjourney, a platform that generates images based on user inputs. Wilson began using Midjourney in November and has since created various artworks, including an illustration for her toddler daughter about being gentle with cats, using AI-generated poems as prompts.

Wilson praises Midjourney for its ability to create colour palettes and generate multiple visual variations of her ideas. However, she acknowledges that the AI-generated images often lack detail and can exhibit errors. I think first draft is a good way to think about it, or just making a visual variation like taking an old painting and being like, how could I have made this better? Just different takes on an idea, she said.

Despite concerns that AI-generated art could threaten the livelihood of artists, Wilson is not worried. She believes that the art market still values original artwork over AI-generated versions. I dont feel super threatened because it is kind of like a first draft, and the nature of the art market is that originals do have more value, she said.

Wilson also pointed out that AI-generated images tend to resemble each other, particularly in specific subjects like mountains, and may not capture unique features of a particular place. She also expressed concern about the potential bias against minorities in AI-generated images, as the AI is trained on images available on the internet, which may be predominantly Caucasian-focused.

Midjourney has faced controversy among artists who argue that they did not give consent for their images to be used for training the AI. Wilson believes that the platform works best as a reference or for inspiring ideas. For example, she provided Midjourney with a photo of the Kootenay Lake ferry, and although the returned images were not perfect, they inspired her to create a painting combining elements from each.

Wilson is comfortable with the ethics of using Midjourney when working with her own sketches and reference images, but she is not interested in using it to copy art or reference from artists trying to make a living. I feel like if Im using my own sketches and reference images and working with it, Im OK with that. Maybe its behind the scenes referencing a bunch of stuff that I dont know about, but I still feel like Im making a lot of decisions there, she said.

That certain something

Avi Phillips, owner of Transform Your Org, a digital services company specializing in data management, analytics audits, and website accessibility, and Joe Boland, a Trail-based health coach and owner of Darn Strong Dads, have both embraced the use of ChatGPT to enhance their respective businesses.

Phillips first experience with ChatGPT was mindblowing, comparing it to Google, which only returns websites as results, whereas ChatGPT synthesizes information in a conversational manner. He uses it for creating content, developing outlines, and answering questions about coding. It feels like life has changed again, and we cant go back. Its the Pandoras box. Its open and everybody has access to this opportunity now to stylize their lives, Phillips said.

However, Phillips also expressed concerns about the potential negative uses of AI, such as hacking and spreading misinformation, and the ethical implications of releasing AI to the public before its final version. Were all part of this guinea pig training for this AI, he remarked.

Boland utilizes ChatGPT to save time, draft coaching curriculums, and find inspiration for new ideas. He appreciates the organic responses it provides compared to more rudimentary chatbots. With ChatGPT, you can punch in practically anything and then it will come back with an answer that is largely very organic reading, Boland said.

However, Boland acknowledges that ChatGPT falls short when addressing specific client needs, and he would not use it as a sole source of direction. He also believes that people will always prefer human interaction over AI, especially when dealing with sensitive topics like health and wellness. We need that human connection that I dont think AI can necessarily offer, Boland added.

Both Phillips and Boland advocate for more rigorous fact-checking and responsible AI use, as they continue to explore the potential of ChatGPT to enhance their businesses and industries.

Welcome to the era of viral AI generated ‘news’ images – kuna noticias y kuna radio

CNN

By Clare Duffy, CNN

Pope Francis wearing a massive, white puffer coat. Elon Musk walking hand-in-hand with rival GM CEO Mary Barra. Former President Donald Trump being detained by police in dramatic fashion.

None of these things actually happened, but AI-generated images depicting them did go viral online over the past week.

The images ranged from obviously fake to, in some cases, compellingly real, and they fooled some social media users. Model and TV personality Chrissy Teigen, for example, tweeted that she thought the popes puffer coat was real, saying, didnt give it a second thought. no way am I surviving the future of technology. The images also sparked a slew of headlines, as news organizations rushed to debunk the false images, especially those of Trump, who was ultimately indicted by a Manhattan grand jury on Thursday but has not been arrested.

The situation demonstrates a new online reality: the rise of a new crop of buzzy artificial intelligence tools has made it cheaper and easier than ever to create realistic images, as well as audio and videos. And these images are likely to pop up with increasing frequency on social media.

While these AI tools may enable new means of expressing creativity, the spread of computer-generated media also threatens to further pollute the information ecosystem. That risks adding to the challenges for users, news organizations and social media platforms to vet whats real, after years of grappling with online misinformation featuring far less sophisticated visuals. There are also concerns that AI-generated images could be used for harassment, or to further drive divided internet users apart.

I worry that it will sort of get to a point where there will be so much fake, highly realistic content online that most people will just go with their tribal instincts as a guide to what they think is real, more than actually informed opinions based on verified evidence, said Henry Ajder, a synthethic media expert who works as an advisor to companies and government agencies, including Meta Reality Labs European Advisory Council.

Images, compared to the AI-generated text that has also recently proliferated thanks to tools like ChatGPT, can be especially powerful in provoking emotions when people view them, said Claire Leibowicz, head of AI and media integrity at the Partnership on AI, a nonprofit industry group. That can make it harder for people to slow down and evaluate whether what theyre looking at is real or fake.

Whats more, coordinated bad actors could eventually attempt to create fake content in bulk or suggest that real content is computer-generated in order to confuse internet users and provoke certain behaviors.

The paranoia of an impending Trump potential arrest created a really useful case study in understanding what the potential implications are, and I think were very lucky that things did not go south, said Ben Decker, CEO of threat intelligence group Memetica. Because if more people had had that idea en masse, in a coordinated fashion, I think theres a universe where we could start to see the online to offline effects.

Computer-generated image technology has improved rapidly in recent years, from the photoshopped image of a shark swimming through a flooded highway that has been repeatedly shared during natural disasters to the websites that four years ago began churning out mostly unconvincing fake photos of non-existent people.

Many of the recent viral AI-generated images were created by a tool called Midjourney, a less than year-old platform that allows users to create images based on short text prompts. On its website, Midjourney describes itself as a small self-funded team, with just 11 full-time staff members.

A cursory glance at a Facebook page popular among Midjourney users reveals AI-generated images of a seemingly inebriated Pope Francis, elderly versions of Elvis and Kurt Cobain, Musk in a robotic Tesla bodysuit and many creepy animal creations. And thats just from the past few days.

The latest version of Midjourney is only available to a select number of paid users, Midjourney CEO David Holz told CNN in an email Friday. Midjourney this week paused access to the free trial of its earlier versions due to extraordinary demand and trial abuse, according to a Discord post from Holz, but he told CNN it was unrelated to the viral images. The creator of the Trump arrest images also claimed he was banned from the site.

The rules page on the companys Discord site asks users: Dont use our tools to make images that could inflame, upset, or cause drama. That includes gore and adult content.

Moderation is hard and well be shipping improved systems soon, Holz told CNN. Were taking lots of feedback and ideas from experts and the community and are trying to be really thoughtful.

In most cases, the creators of the recent viral images dont appear to have been acting malevolently. The Trump arrest images were created by the founder of the online investigative journalism outlet Bellingcat, who clearly labeled them as his fabrications, even if other social media users werent as discerning.

There are efforts by platforms, AI technology companies and industry groups to improve the transparency around when a piece of content is generated by a computer.

Platforms including Metas Facebook and Instagram, Twitter and YouTube have policies restricting or prohibiting the sharing of manipulated media that could mislead users. But as use of AI-generated technologies grows, even such policies could threaten to undermine user trust. If, for example, a fake image accidentally slipped through a platforms detection system, it could give people false confidence, Ajder said. Theyll say, theres a detection system that says its real, so it must be real.'

Work is also underway on technical solutions that would, for example, watermark an AI-generated image or include a transparent label in an images metadata, so anyone viewing it across the internet would know it was created by a computer. The Partnership on AI has developed a set of standard, responsible practices for synthetic media along with partners like ChatGPT-creator OpenAI, TikTok, Adobe, Bumble and the BBC, which includes recommendations such as how to disclose an image was AI-generated and how companies can share data around such images.

The idea is that these institutions are all committed to disclosure, consent and transparency, Leibowicz said.

A group of tech leaders, including Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, this week wrote an open letter calling for artificial intelligence labs to stop the training of the most powerful AI systems for at least six months, citing profound risks to society and humanity. Still, its not clear whether any labs will take such a step. And as the technology rapidly improves and becomes accessible beyond a relatively small group of corporations committed to responsible practices, lawmakers may need to get involved, Ajder said.

This new age of AI cant be held in the hands of a few massive companies getting rich off of these tools, we need to democratize this technology, he said. At the same time, there are also very real and legitimate concerns of having a radical open approach where you just open source a tool or have very minimal restrictions on its use is going to lead to a massive scaling of harm and I think legislation will probably play a role in reigning in some of the more radically open models.

Jacinda Ardern says goodbye to parliament: how her politics of kindness fell on unkind times – The Conversation

Jacinda Arderns resignation as prime minister in January was a courageous and pragmatic decision for herself, her family and her party. Although many said shed done a great job as leader, she rightly reminded us that a great leader is one who knows when its time to go.

Since hitting stellar heights in mid-2020, Arderns Labour Party had dropped significantly in the polls and was trailing the opposition National Party throughout 2022. The Jacinda effect had switched from being a uniting force to a polarising one. With an election coming in October, it was time for a change.

Her decision to stand down was as politically astute and timely as her elevation to leader of the Labour Party in August 2017. After all, Labour is now ahead of National in recent polls.

By the time she gives her valedictory statement to parliament later today, Ardern will have served as an MP for nearly 15 years. While the intervening period has undoubtedly changed her, she remains in many ways the same person she was as a novice backbencher.

In her maiden speech to the House of Representatives in 2008, she expressed the small-town values that got her started:

Some people have asked me whether I am a radical. My answer to that question is very simple: I am from Morrinsville. Where I come from a radical is someone who chooses to drive a Toyota rather than a Holden or a Ford.

She described herself as a social democrat who believed in human rights, social justice, equality and democracy. She spoke especially about work, education, community and the reduction of poverty child poverty in particular.

All fine aspirations. But back then, Arderns Labour Party was looking at nine long years in opposition after Helen Clarks three-term government lost power. Unable to break the run Nationals John Key enjoyed as prime minister, Labour went through one leader after another while Ardern rose through the ranks.

In mid-2017, despite a mood for change, it still looked like the election wouldnt go well for Labour, at the time polling down around 25%. Then, at the beginning of August, Andrew Little handed leadership of the party to Ardern. With just seven weeks until the election, it was either an inspired move or the ultimate hospital pass.

As history shows, however, Arderns elevation immediately energised Labours campaign. It also drew international attention to the New Zealand election, as what became known as Jacindamania changed the mood on the streets and in the media.

Critics sometimes labelled Ardern the accidental prime minister a rookie appointed by Winston Peters, whose New Zealand First party held the balance of power in post-election negotiations. Conventional wisdom has it that Ardern simply offered Peters a better coalition deal, despite her party having won fewer seats than National.

But Peters gave those critics some more ammunition during a recent TV interview. He appeared to reveal that New Zealand First was forced to choose coalition with Labour when then-National leader Bill English alerted him to a potential leadership coup by Judith Collins.

According to Peters, English had assured him Collins didnt have the numbers to pull it off. (Collins would eventually become National leader, of course, losing spectacularly to Ardern at the 2020 election.)

This sliding-doors version of events may be conjecture. But Peters cant have forgotten how Jenny Shipley had rolled previous National leader and prime minister Jim Bolger in 1997. That ultimately led to the breakup of the National-New Zealand First coalition in which Peters had been deputy prime minister and treasurer.

Perhaps, then, we have Collins to thank for Arderns elevation to the top job. Well probably never know.

The Jacinda effect wasnt a flash in the pan, however. Labours election support went from 25% in 2014 to 37% in 2017, and then to an extraordinary 50% in 2020. Coming on the back of Arderns exemplary leadership through the COVID pandemic, it was an unprecedented result under the countrys proportional MMP system.

Her belief in kindness as a political force appeared to have been vindicated, if not for long. While New Zealand eventually recorded the worlds lowest excess mortality rate during the pandemic, this success was far from cost-free. In particular, there was a human and political price to pay for the lockdowns and border closures.

Businesses struggled, many New Zealanders abroad couldnt return, and many resisted the pressure to be vaccinated. No nation escaped unscathed, and in New Zealand resistance to vaccine mandates boiled over on the grounds of parliament in early 2022.

Some protesters were angered by Arderns trademark empathy and kindness, which they now perceived as a false front. Due to the extremist elements among the protests, she refused to address them directly.

Arderns positive leadership reputation was earned on her responses to tragedies: the Christchurch terror attack, the Whakaari-White Island eruption, and the pandemic. But no sane politician would have welcomed such crises.

Nor were they part of Arderns social democratic plan. In fact, they hindered it. She did a lot for child poverty and family incomes, in line with her core values. But those achievements were overshadowed by a pandemic response that upended her governments fiscal policy.

So, if catastrophes were the making of Jacindas career as prime minister, they were also the breaking of it. From her first campaign speech in August 2017, she had created a sense of promise that her government was ultimately unable to fulfil.

She claimed climate change was her generations nuclear-free moment, and that a decent, affordable home was everyones right. It sounded great, but on both counts progress fell short of expectation and need. Later, she would capitulate on a full capital gains tax to help solve the housing crisis. That allowed coalition partner Peters to claim credit for the backdown.

But it would also be wrong if the lasting narrative was one of failure to deliver. Her governments Child Poverty Reduction Act now mandates reporting on progress towards poverty targets, bringing the problem into the engine room of fiscal policy. The Healthy School Lunches program helped reduce food insecurity.

Future governments will encounter strong political resistance if they try to rescind those measures.

Even those tireless advocates for children, the Child Poverty Action Group (CPAG), gave Ardern qualified approval following her resignation although the truce didnt last long. CPAG was back on the attack when Stats NZ reported child poverty rates for the year ended June 2022 were unchanged compared with the previous year.

In the end, Ardern did not use the single-party majority she won in 2020 to fix the things shed wanted to fix. When her government saw a problem, its default setting was to say lets centralise it as if that would do. Good social democratic government was sidelined by bureaucratic shakeups in healthcare, education and (before the plan was cancelled) public broadcasting.

An elaborate structural reform of water services became mired in controversy over Mori co-governance and loss of local democratic control. The sixth Labour governments only potentially historic contribution to the development of New Zealands social security system a proposed unemployment insurance scheme was quietly shelved after criticism from both left and right.

So, will Ardern be remembered as one the great Labour leaders? To do so would put her in the pantheon of Michael Joseph Savage and Peter Fraser, who achieved so much in social security, healthcare and education, and who led the country through the second world war.

It would also place her next to Norman Kirk, whose 1972-75 government universalised accident compensation, introduced the domestic purposes benefit, and stood against French nuclear testing in the Pacific.

Its a high bar, but not unreasonable to make the case. Ardern broke through barriers for women, most notably giving birth to her daughter while she held office. She united the country after the mosque shootings, soothing what could have become a divisive moment. By listening to the scientific evidence and advice about COVID, she helped save countless lives.

Ardern will undoubtedly be remembered as one of Aotearoa New Zealands outstanding prime ministers. This may not be for reasons of her choosing, though. Once the disaster management is accounted for, there are no major lasting achievements for which her government will be cited in the history books.

What will be remembered is Arderns exemplary and highly effective leadership through COVID. Yet there is no kind pathway through an unkind pandemic. Nevertheless, Jacinda Ardern is owed gratitude for all that she did and acknowledgement of all she had to endure to get her nation through it.

Jacinda Ardern says goodbye to parliament: how her politics of kindness fell on unkind times - The Conversation

Harry, Meghan called toxic as Jacinda Ardern joins Prince William’s project – Hindustan Times

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were snubbed in favour of Prince William and Kate Middleton, according to a statement made by Diana's former butler. This statement comes to light after the Prince and Princess of Wales announced on Tuesday that the former New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern would join the Board of Trustees on their Earthshot Prize project. (Also read: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle face negativity in US as Americans become 'weary' of them: Report)

Jacinda had announced her surprise resignation in January, and now on Tuesday, the outgoing New Zealand prime minister was named the latest member of Prince William's environmental initiative. This new appointment comes months after the former leader distanced herself from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle over their Netflix series, Live to Lead, which she appeared in.

"Her life-long commitment to supporting sustainable and environmental solutions, along with her experience as Prime Minister of New Zealand, will bring a rich infusion of new thinking to our mission. Four years ago, before The Earthshot Prize even had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice was crucial to the Prize's early success. I am hugely grateful to her for joining us as she takes the next steps in her career," Prince William said on Jacinda's addition to the team.

Now speaking to GB News about Jacinda's decision to partner up with William and Kate over Harry and Meghan, Princess Diana's former butler Paul Burrell said, "Jacinda has seen that Harry and Meghan's world is becoming toxic and they are only celebrities. They are not ambassadors for the world and William and Kate are. Look at the difference between the two couples, one who worked tirelessly for Britain, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. And the other who just basically want to be as famous as possible and as rich as possible. So Jacinda's looking at the long game. She's looking at what she should do to help William and Kate, and that's the right decision."

Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot in May 2018. They welcomed son Archie in May 2019, and daughter Lilibet in June 2021. Since Meghan and Harry announced in January 2020 that they would step down as senior working royals, they have been open about their life in the royal family. They were seen in the Netflix docuseries, Harry and Meghan, which was released last year. Prince Harry also released his controversial memoir Spare earlier this year.

Prince William said it was an honour to welcome Jacinda Ardern to Earthshot's board of trustees

Jacinda Ardern has been appointed a trustee of the Prince of Wales' prestigious environment award, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

Prince William said it was an honour to welcome the former leader of New Zealand to the Earthshot Prize.

Ms Ardern resigned in January saying she no longer had "enough in the tank" to lead the country.

The former prime minister said she was "humbled and excited to be working with the Earthshot team".

Speaking of the appointment, Prince William said Ms Ardern's "life-long commitment to supporting sustainable and environmental solutions" and her experience would "bring a rich infusion of new thinking to our mission".

"Four years ago, before the Earthshot Prize even had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice was crucial to the prize's early success.

"I am hugely grateful to her for joining us as she takes the next steps in her career," he added.

The Earthshot Prize was created by Prince William to fund projects that aim to save the planet.

On joining Earthshot's board of trustees, Ms Ardern said since its creation she had believed in the prize's "power to encourage and spread not only the innovation we desperately need, but also optimism".

The former prime minister of New Zealand attended the Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit in New York in September 2022 where she spoke on behalf of Prince William, who had stayed in the UK following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth.

Chair of the board of trustees Christiana Figueres said she was "thrilled" to welcome Ms Ardern and had long been inspired by her "work as a catalysing force in the effort to combat climate change".

Since her resignation, Ms Ardern is also due to serve as an unpaid special envoy for the Christchurch Call, which she co-founded in 2019 to bring technology companies and countries together to combat extremism, according to Reuters news agency.

Prince William and Ms Ardern have met on numerous occasions, including when the former leader of New Zealand visited Kensington Palace during a visit to Britain in July last year.

Jacinda Ardern joins The Earthshot Prize as a Trustee – Earthshot Prize

Jacinda Ardern, former Prime Minister of New Zealand, is joining the Board of Trustees of Prince Williams Earthshot Prize.

Her commitment to sustainable development and climate action as Prime Minister of New Zealand strongly align with the optimistic ambition of The Earthshot Prize and its efforts to protect and restore our planet by 2030.

Speaking about the appointment, Prince William said:

It is an honour to welcome Jacinda to The Earthshot Prize team. Her life-long commitment to supporting sustainable and environmental solutions, along with her experience as Prime Minister of New Zealand, will bring a rich infusion of new thinking to our mission.

Four years ago, before The Earthshot Prize even had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice was crucial to the Prizes early success. I am hugely grateful to her for joining us as she takes the next steps in her career.

Jacinda Ardern said:

I am humbled and excited to be working with the Earthshot team. Since its inception, Ive believed Earthshots power to encourage and spread not only the innovation we desperately need, but also optimism. Solutions are within our reach if we invest, support and accelerate them globally.

In September 2022, Ms. Ardern attended The Earthshot Prize Innovation Summit in New York where she spoke on behalf of Prince William as he remained in the UK following the passing of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

She offered powerful remarks on the critical need for innovation to positively alter the course of our environmental trajectory and called on political leaders and the private sector to support and invest in solutions.

Jacinda Ardern gives her farewell speech in parliament in Wellington on April 5.

Welcome to the NPR series where we spotlight the people and things making headlines and the stories behind them.

In a rousing and, at times, personal farewell speech this week in parliament, Jacinda Ardern touched on family, politics and one of the very few things she will ask of her colleagues as she departs.

Who is she? The former prime minister of New Zealand.

Jacinda Ardern's final speech to New Zealand's parliament.

What's the big deal?

What is she saying? In her final speech this week, Ardern spoke of both her personal and political ambitions and achievements.

On describing herself as a "worrier":

Some might say the worst possible character trait to have as a politician, or the best depending on how you cut it.

I've always believed this to be a place where you can make a difference. I leave knowing that to be true ... And not only can you be here, you can lead just like me.

On climate change:

Climate change is a crisis. It is upon us. And so one of the very few things I will ask of this House on my departure is that you please take the politics out of climate change.

On her personal life:

I had not long experienced a failed IVF round when I became leader of the Labour Party. I thought that I had found myself on a path that meant I wouldn't be a mother. Rather than process that, I campaigned to become prime minister, a rather good distraction as far as they go. Imagine my surprise when a couple of months later I discovered I was pregnant.

So, what now?

Former Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern will donate clothing to Te Papa – New Zealand Herald

Jacinda Ardern will donate a selection of her wardrobe and some of her personal notes to Te Papa, becoming the latest politician to donate her belongings to the museums collection.

In an interview with Newshubs Samantha Hayes last nightTuesday March 4, Ardern revealed she would be donating some of her more recognisable outfits to the Wellington institution, including the dress designed by New Zealander Juliette Hogan which Ardern wore while meeting Queen Elizabeth.

Ardern was heavily pregnant at the meeting in 2018 when she wore the floor-length gown with a korowai.

Also part of the collection is the blue and red floral dress designed by Kate Sylvester that she wore to be sworn in as Prime Minister in 2017, a maroon jumpsuit with an elasticated waist to accommodate her pregnant tummy while on an international trip, and the red blazer she wore when she became the leader of the Labour Party.

Throughout her political career, Ardern showed preference for local designers and sustainable brands, bringing Aotearoas fashion to the global stage.

The clothing items will join another item donated by Ardern to the museum - the tiny green knitted hat which her daughter Neve wore when she was first shown to the world at just 3 days old.

The hat is one of a number of knitted beanies donated to the neonatal intensive care unit and maternity service by a knitting group.

The white jumper Ardern wore while cradling her capped baby will be donated too.

Also already in the collection is the Carolyn Barker dress Ardern wore while being sworn into Parliament in 2008.

Alongside the clothing items, Ardern will also donate the notes she made the afternoon of the March 15 terror attack directly after learning of the Christchurch shooting, and the pens she and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters used to sign the documents for the coalition Government.

Ardern is not the only political figure to have clothing in Te Papa - Dame Jenny Shipley also donated her Peter Homan purple skirt suit and silver and pearl brooch which she wore while being sworn in as Prime Minister in 1997.

Shipley was the first female Prime Minister of New Zealand, and held the position for two years.

The Herald has contacted Te Papa for further comment.

Jacinda Ardern speech: New Zealand’s former prime minister delivers emotional final speech to Parliament: "You can be a mother … you can lead,…

Jacinda Ardern's tenure as prime minister of New Zealand has both sparked inspiration and stirred controversy. But in her final address to Parliament on Wednesday, she made one thing clear: She wants both of those perceptions, and any others, to show that anyone can lead, "just like me."

Ardern announced her resignation as prime minister in January and had her last day in that position on Feb. 7 after more than five years as the country's leader the youngest elected to the role in more than 150 years. She has served as a member of Parliament in the Labour Party since 2008.

And it was a role, she said Wednesday, "I never thought I was meant to have."

"I was a worrier. I anticipated that everything that could go wrong, would some might say the worst possible character trait to have as a politician. Or the best, depending on how you cut it," she said. "While I convinced myself that you cannot be a worrier and be in this place, you can. You can be that person and you can be here. I'm sensitive, or as [former New Zealand Member of Parliament] Maggie Barry once called me, a precious petal."

Ardern's time as prime minister has served as one of inspiration for many women around the world as she was one of only a few women PMs and was only the second leader in the world to give birth while in office. She has strongly advocated for the rights of women and children throughout her tenure, and she took steps to protect the environment, including a ban on new permits for offshore oil and gas exploration.

She also received global praise for implementing strict gun control measures after the Christchurch mosque shootings in 2019 that left 51 people dead.

"I've become used to my time as prime minister being distilled down into a different list," she said on Wednesday. "A domestic terror attack, a volcanic eruption, a pandemic a series of events where I found myself in people's lives during their most grief-stricken or traumatic moments."

A large part of the controversy during her tenure stems from her handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Ardern started implementing strict rules on how the country would handle COVID-19 as early as February 2020, just weeks after the world started learning of the virus' spread.

Ardern said Wednesday that she can't determine what will end up defining her time as prime minister, but that she hopes she's "demonstrated something else entirely."

"That you can be anxious, sensitive, kind and wear your heart on your sleeve," she said. "You can be a mother or not. You can be an ex-Mormon or not. You can be a nerd, a crier, a hugger. You can be all of these things and not only can you be here, you can lead, just like me."

Ardern will remain a member of Parliament for now and has already started branching out into new initiatives.

Earlier this week, it was announced that she will be joining the board of trustees for the Earthshot Prize, an initiative led by Britain's Prince William to help find and award people who are creating solutions to tackle environmental issues and the climate crisis.

"Four years ago, before The Earthshot Prize even had a name, Jacinda was one of the first people I spoke to, and her encouragement and advice was crucial to the Prize's early success," William said in the announcement. "I am hugely grateful to her for joining us as she takes the next steps in her career."

The same day that was announced, New Zealand's new Prime Minister Chris Hipkins said he has appointed Ardern to be the special envoy for Christchurch Call, a group of governments and organizations working to "eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online." In that role, which will begin on April 17, she will report directly to Hipkins.

Wright v Ver headed for trial in Antigua as Roger Ver chooses not to … – CoinGeek

Roger Ver will not appeal his failed jurisdictional challenge in relation to Dr. Craig Wrights libel suit against him in Antigua, CoinGeek has learned.

In February, the High Court of Antigua and Barbudarejecteda jurisdictional challenge made byRoger Verin the Antiguan court. Ver had hoped to get the libel suit tossed on the basis that the court did not have jurisdiction to hear the claim, in particular, because neither party had sufficient connection to the country. The court disagreed, pointing to the fact that both parties were connected to the country and were highly involved in the digital asset industry there: Dr. Wright has advised the government of Antigua and Barbuda on digital asset legislation and has built important associations in the country, while Ver has a home on the beach there and has hosted several Bitcoin Cash meetups in the country as well.

It said that, as a result, Dr. Wright was entitled to defend his reputation in that jurisdiction. With Vers decision not to appeal that ruling, the case will head to a full trial to determine whether Ver has defamed Dr. Wright.

The courts affirmation of Dr. Wrights lawsuit marks the culmination of years of jurisdiction hopping by Ver, as he sought to avoid answering for Tweets he had made in which he called Dr. Craig Wright a fraud in his claim to theSatoshi Nakamoto name.

Dr. Wright brought a substantially similar action in the U.K. in 2019, which was rejected on the basis that the English courts were not the most appropriate venue to hear the dispute. This caused Ver to flee to Antigua, setting up shop in the Jolly Harbour neighborhood. Unfortunately for Ver, Dr. Wright has been a citizen of Antigua since 2016, meaning that Ver had inadvertently made Antigua the perfect venue to settle the dispute.

Its also the second time Dr. Wright has emerged victorious over Roger Ver in as many months. In February, the U.K. Court of Appeal ruled that Ver and a number of other blockchain developers must face trial over whether or not they owe legal duties to those using and relying on their blockchain protocols. It was a highly significant decision, and the trial has the potential to usher in an enormous shift in how the law deals treats ownership ofdigital assets.

As for Antigua, the scene is now set for the matter of Vers attacks on Dr. Wright to be resolved in a court of law, in the full light of the evidence. Given bloggerPeter McCormack has already been found liablefor defamation in the U.K. regarding substantially similar postings, the future does not bode well for Ver.

Dogecoin (DOGE) Price Prediction 2025-2030: A 30% hike in 7 days means – AMBCrypto News

Disclaimer: The datasets shared in the following article have been compiled from a set of online resources and do not reflect AMBCryptos own research on the subject.

Dogecoin (DOGE) has been performing well on the price charts in recent days. In fact, DOGE is up by over 30% on the weekly charts. This, largely owing to Twitters Elon Musk replacing the social media platforms logo with Dogecoins. Understandably, this has fueled notions that Musk will soon add DOGE as a payment option on Twitter.

Additionally, as per a Reuters report published on 1 April, Elon Musk and his lawyers reportedly asked a US judge this week to dismiss a $258 billion lawsuit filed by investors who claimed that Musk ran a pyramid scheme to promote the cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Musks lawyers also described his Dogecoin statements as innocuous and often silly tweets in an attempt to persuade the judge to dismiss the multibillion-dollar lawsuit.

Six days ago, the UK branch of global fast-food chain Burger King unexpectedly responded to a post about cryptocurrency payments at Burger King, We need doge.

Soon after, Asian stocks rallied after Chinas central bank committed to providing more financial assistance to companies, triggering a massive bull wave in all risk assets. The Chinese central bank is once again opening its wallet in order to provide financial assistance to businesses.

Last week, tech billionaire Elon Musk mentioned a fee for visiting Twitter headquarters, which should be paid in DOGE, in a tweet. The Twitter boss was responding to user DogeDesigner (@cb_doge), who wanted to visit the head office of this social media platform.

The crypto industry witnessed around $307 million in liquidations on 9 March within a day of the collapse of the crypto-friendly bank Silvergate Capital (SI). Dogecoin was among the coins, leading the price decline as it fell from $0.0715 to $0.0632. But its performance has recovered with time.

Previously, the whole FTX debacle had also been particularly bad for DOGE, as its price had reached around $0.15, the lowest since the first crypto crash in May 2022 following the Terra stablecoin debacle.

What started as a parody of mainstream cryptocurrency culture quickly gained currency among enthusiasts who had not taken the whole affair very seriously. Dogecoin is now as well-known as Bitcoin (BTC), even among the uninformed. As a result of meme culture, Dogecoin and other meme coins have become immensely powerful.

ReadPrice Prediction for Dogecoin [DOGE]for 2023-24

In fact, for the greater part of 2022, DOGE/USD performed poorly except for when Elon Musk acquired Twitter. Theacquisition raised hopesin the Dogecoin community about increased cryptocurrency usage.

Being Elon Musks favorite memecoin at one point, it was counted among the most popular cryptocurrencies. However, the FTX sagawas particularly bad for DOGE, as its price had reached around $0.15, the highest since the first crypto crash in May 2022 following the Terra stablecoin debacle.

Since its launch in around 2010, the cryptocurrency industry has come a long way. The vision of the cryptocurrency industry was an on-chain, financial order that would not invite governmental intervention. Needless to say, such a grand plan elicited suspicion and even invited smirks.

Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, a pair of software engineers, had been observing this trend. who thought that this whole crypto affair was being taken far too seriously. In response, they created a memecoin named Dogecoin in December 2013 to mock crypto maximalists. The memecoin soon became popular across the globe, thanks to it going viral on social media sites such as Reddit.

The token featured an image of an adorable Shiba Inu dog, a rare breed of hunting dog from Japan. Dogecoin went viral on social media platforms such as Reddit, gaining instant popularity worldwide.

Dogecoin soon earned a devoted following. Those who were interested in cryptocurrency but were not too serious about its alleged revolutionary potential were the first to flock to this memecoin. People who liked this breed of Japanese dogs also bought this memecoin. Anyone willing to casually engage with cryptocurrency also participated in the Dogecoin culture.

However, as it gained more traction in the market and its value increased, people began to buy this joke of a cryptocurrency in earnest. Today, it is the 10th largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, and post the Ethereum Merge, has emerged as the second-largest Proof-of-Work (PoS) cryptocurrency after Bitcoin. In fact, the value and popularity of this memecoin grew so popularthat it was the sleeve sponsor for the English football club, Watford F.C. for the 2021-22 season, asreportedbyThe Atlantic.

Thanks to the popularity of Dogecoin, a herd of meme-inspired cryptocurrencies have mushroomed across the globe- Shiba Inu being the most popular among them. Over the years, more than 200 meme coins have been created since the launch of Dogecoin.

Within a few days of its launch, itrosefrom $0.00026 to $0.00095 in value, recording a significant hike of around 300%. In doing so, it quickly established itself as one of the markets top-10 cryptocurrencies. Between January and May 2021, DOGE surged by more than 8,600%.

One of the reasons behind such a surge was it being mentioned on social media by tech and entertainment giants such as Elon Musk, Snoop Dogg, and Mark Cuban. On 8 May 2021, ithit an ATHof $0.7376.

As per TradingView, DOGE, at press time, was trading at $0.0970, with a market cap of $11.8 billion. The eighth-largest cryptocurrency, at the time of writing, had a 24-hour trading volume of over $700M.

A long-term Dogecoin developer Sporklin, now no more, onceremarked,

Dogecoin can be a joke and still be functional While the branding is frontal jokes and memes, everything under that has been solid from the start.

What is peculiar to Dogecoin is it is a fascination of the business magnate Elon Musk. Musk evensupportedDogecoin on Twitter and oncecalledit a hustle on an SNL episode, significantly pushing its price both times.

However, when the crypto-market crashed in May 2022 and a lot of Dogecoin investors also lost money, an investor named Keith Johnson filed a $258 billion lawsuit against Elon Musk and his companies, SpaceX and Tesla, for allegedly running what he called a Dogecoin Crypto Pyramid Scheme. In early September, Reutersreportedthat the lawsuit now has seven new investor plaintiffs and six new defendants.

So far, DOGE has been used to reward creative users on Reddit, Twitter, and other such networks for good content. People can also get tipped with DOGE in the eponymous online communities where the currency is popular. Another new concept for our readers might be the existence of Dogecoin faucets. A Dogecoin faucet is a website that gives you a Dogecoin for free so that you get introduced to the world of Dogecoins and become an active member of this meme coin community.

Dogecoin has also been used to raise funds for a number of causes. In 2014, the community came together toraise$50,000 worth of Dogecoins to build water wells in Kenya. The same year, a group of enthusiastsraisedover $25,000 worth of dogecoins to let the Jamaican bobsleigh team attend the Winter Olympics in Sochi. In 2014 again, the community raised $55,000 worth of Dogecoins to sponsor the Nascar driver Josh Wise. I cant thank the dogecoin and Reddit community enough for the support To the moon!saidWise.

The growth of Dogecoin over these years has less to do with its infrastructure development and more to do with its strong mining community.

Only recently, Billy Markus, the co-founder of Dogecoin, rejecteda $14 million offer to promote Dogechain, the unofficial layer-2 solution for the meme coin. Many believed that the decision reflected Billys loyalty to the Doge community. Decentralization is a central marker of this revolutionary financial system and forging an alliance with another group is a possible violation if the latter comes to dominate the system. Keeping the memecoin community fun and independent has been the cornerstone of the belief system underlying the growth of the community.

Today, Dogecoin is as mainstream as Bitcoin and is traded on all the major cryptocurrency exchanges such as Coinbase, Gemini and Binance.

Many prominent members of the blockchain and fintech communities are currently involved with Dogecoin. A foundation was formed in 2014 to support and govern the project but it dissolved over time. It was reinvigorated in 2021 by members of the original core team along with fresh faces and new seasoned advisors ready to grow Dogecoin for the decade ahead.

Its group of directors include Dogecoin founder Billy Markus, core developer Max Keller, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, and Jared Birchall representing Tesla founder Elon Musk. Markus takes care of the community and memes, Keller handles technical aspects of the project, Buterin acts as the crypto-advisor for the foundation, and Birchall provides legal and financial advice.

We can see how a currency that began as a joke has come such a long way that the most prominent members of the crypto community are today leading, advising, and monitoring its development.

Let us explore how this fun cryptocurrency, one that claims to Do Only Good Everyday, will perform in the next few years.

Dogecoin is the pioneer among all the memecoins active in the market. It is only after the initial success of Dogecoin that other memecoins like Shiba Inu and Monacoin entered the market. In fact, at press time, it was among the markets top 10 cryptocurrencies.

Dogecoin remains immensely popular among its core fanbase and other crypto-enthusiasts. Currently, its Twitter and Reddit communities have 3.7 million and 2.4 million members.A major reason behind its increasing value has been the support of these online communities.

In January 2021, its pricesawa hike of 800% in just 24 hours when a subReddit named r/SatoshiStreetBets began pushing its price to make it the cryptocurrency equivalent of Gamestop. In early April 2021, itroseby 400% after popular crypto-exchange Coinbase went public and Elon Musk tweeted about Dogecoin.

How manyDOGEs can you buy for $1?

Before investing in Dogecoin, it is wise that you should be aware of its previous performance, studies and market predictions. It is precisely for this reason that we are providing a summary of most reliable predictions regarding Dogecoin, in addition to the Fear & Greed Index.

The way Dogecoin began as a mockery of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, its performance also broadly mimicked the performance of those currencies. Adverse market conditions towards the end of Q2 in 2022 completely ravished the crypto-market and Dogecoin couldnt escape its brunt either.

In 2021, it remained one of the best-performing cryptocurrencies, peaking in May with an ATH of $0.7376 and a market cap of over $0.7 billion. Then it quickly began descending. 2022 began with a fairly decent start for the cryptocurrency, with a price of around $0.17 in early January. But since then, it has lost over 60% of its value.

It was in May 2017 that its market capitalization crossed $100 million and by the end of 2017; it crossed $1 billion. During 2018-20, the market cap of Dogecoin couldnt cross the $1 billion mark. However, come 2021 and like its price, its market cap also kept soaring. In April, it hit $52.65 billion, before reaching the $88.68 billion mark in early May. It ended the year 2021 with a market cap of over $22 billion.

Early 2022 was also fairly blissful for Dogecoin, though not as good as the previous year. In early April 2022, its market cap was $19.84 billion. Alas, since May, the same has been falling from around $17 billion.

What is peculiar to Dogecoin is it being a subject of fascination for business magnate Elon Musk. Musk evensupportedDogecoin on Twitter and oncecalledit a hustle on an SNL episode, significantly pushing its price both times.

It has also won the support of other celebrities, such as Mark Cuban and Snoop Dogg too. While the formers NBA team Dallas Mavericks has been acceptingDogecoin as a payment currency, the lattersupportedMusk in his support for the meme coin on Twitter.

Another distinction between Dogecoin and other cryptocurrencies is that there is absolutely no cap on the number of Dogecoins that can be issued. Its websiteclaimsthat it has a diminished inflation rate because it has a fixed yearly issuance of 5 billion coins.

Investors should understand that different analysts look at different sets of parameters to forecast market metrics. Different analyses can therefore widely vary. We should also remember that unexpected macroeconomic forces such as government regulations and wars cannot be foreseen. Market changes its course wildly during such changes. No prediction is therefore set in stone.

Now, let us see how different analysts have predicted the future of Dogecoin in 2025.

Coin Journal is rather bullish about the future of Dogecoin as it predicts its wider utility as more and more merchants begin accepting it as a mode of payment, raising its price to $1.18.

A Changelly blogpost mentions that the maximum and minimum prices of DOGE in 2025 will be 0.239 and 0.279. It predicts a potential ROI of 221.8% for DOGE in the said year.

Benzinga also predicts that the end of 2025 could be the beginning of the next bear market, causing DOGE to consolidate around the $0.20 mark.

Even though predicting market metrics 8 years down the line is very speculative, it is nonetheless helpful to study the predictions of reliable crypto analysts regarding Dogecoin in 2030.

CoinJournal is quite hopeful in its assessment of Dogecoin, predicting that it will be trading at $2.59 in 2030.

A Changelly blogpost predicts that DOGE will be traded for at least $1.5 in 2030, with a possible peak price of $1.81. Its average price is expected to be around $1.55 in 2030.

According to Benzinga, Dogecoin could rise and take new ATHs of $1.30 if it builds a robust network effect and strong community.

Though we must understand that the further we look into the future, the harder it becomes to predict the prices of a currency. It becomes especially challenging in a market as volatile as cryptocurrency.

We must understand that the further we look into the future, the harder it becomes to predict the prices of a currency. It becomes especially challenging in a market as volatile as cryptocurrency.

Experts opine that influencer marketing and promotions will also heat up DOGEs price. It will also grow at a substantial rate. Features such as zero staking rewards and lack of new use cases will also impact the market.

Here, its worth pointing out that perhaps, Dogecoin doesnt follow the traditional rules of a regular asset since it is a memecoin. Just consider what Panxora Hedge Funds Gavin Smith has to say

Detractors of the token forget that community is at least as important as uniqueness in the crypto-space.

Theres the matter of updates too. Ordinarily, people would associate new upgrades and updates with a hike in the cryptos price. However, has that been the case for DOGE? Well, not quite. In fact, Musk has been more useful as a catalyst. In fact, Finders panel seemed to agree with the said proposition.

The primary factors that affect the performance of Dogecoin are:

Bitcoin Jesus Roger Ver once famously said that the memecoin is superior and better than the pioneering cryptocurrency Bitcoin. Now, whether the aforementioned predictions will come true or not depends on a lot of factors, some of which cannot be foreseen. Even so, for an altcoin that began as a joke, Dogecoin has certainly come a long way.

Morgan Creek Capital Management Chief Investment Officer Mark Yusko recently launched a stinging attack on Dogecoin, saying that meme coins dont have any value. The speculative nonsense like Dogecoin, why does it even exist, Yusko asked during aYouTube showwith crypto analyst Scott Melker.

Dogecoin was the first memecoin that successfully wedded the financial potential of cryptocurrency with the fandom of meme culture, making it accessible for new crypto users. In addition, celebrity endorsement also added immensely to its popularity. Today, it is counted among the most valued cryptocurrencies.

Elon Musks takeover of Twitter has certainly piqued an interest in Dogecoin. In October 2022, Musk introduced a Boring Company fragrance on Twitter, which could be bought with Dogecoin. The announcement had an instant impact as Dogecoins price quickly rose. In November 2022, Musk unpacked Twitter 2.0 and outlined several potential changes, including a blank space next to payments. This has led to many people to speculate that a cryptocurrency may be used but there is no certainty so far.

In October 2022, Google Cloud and Coinbase announced a collaboration for Web 3.0 development projects. Certain customers will be able to pay for these services using cryptocurrencies, such as Dogecoin. Well have to wait and see if the decision is implemented and if other companies will follow suit.

Blockchain security firm Halborn released a report on 13 March that highlighted major vulnerabilities known as Rab13s plaguing more than 280 blockchains, including Dogecoin. According to Halborn, it was hired to inspect Dogecoins code in March 2022, with the project soon patching any vulnerabilities it discovered.

Dogecoins Fear and Greed Index was Neutral at press time.

We have seen how the performance of memecoin gets affected by macroeconomic factors, besides the developments in the crypto industry. Investors looking to gain on funds invested in Dogecoin should keep looking for such factors.

This course uses science fiction to understand politics – The Edwardsville Intelligencer

(The Conversation is an independent and nonprofit source of news, analysis and commentary from academic experts.)

(THE CONVERSATION) Uncommon Courses is an occasional series from The Conversation U.S. highlighting unconventional approaches to teaching.

Title of course:

Politics and Science Fiction

What prompted the idea for the course?

While watching Andor a science fiction TV series that is part of the Star Wars galaxy of films, books and TV shows I realized that what fascinates me most about science fiction is the political aspect, especially regarding power.

I decided to create an upper-level political science course that explores politics and government through the lens of science fiction, with a focus on literature.

What does the course explore?

We explore issues of racism, gender, anarchy and the end of civilization. I chose books that encourage students to focus on the political aspects of each work. At the beginning of the course, I ask students how closely they connect science fiction and politics. At the end of the course, students have the opportunity to revisit and revise their response to that question. By that point, students have participated in discussions, written papers and completed short assignments that ask them to explore and articulate political themes in each book.

I find that students in this course begin to take science fiction more seriously as a political genre, and those who come into the class as new readers of science fiction learn to appreciate its many subgenres and perspectives.

Why is this course relevant now?

As numerous state legislatures seek to restrict what can be taught regarding many issues, including race, its important to understand the power structures behind racism. Science fiction is an ideal way to explore issues of power and oppression.

Derrick Bell, the author of The Space Traders, is one of the originators of critical race theory, which holds that racism has been codified in American law and society. Bells story blends science fiction and politics to illustrate how politicians could use the Constitution and the law to extend racist policies to an extreme degree, all for the benefit of white Americans.

Whats a critical lesson from the course?

In one of the writing assignments I ask students to compare the political themes of Ursula K. Le Guins The Dispossessed including utopia, anarchy, gender and power to another work of science fiction that they enjoy. The goal is to help them make connections to political perspectives in other science fiction works and to get them to reexamine a piece of science fiction theyre already familiar with.

This semester, students made comparisons to political themes in multiple science fiction formats and subgenres including Star Wars, The Last of Us and The Hunger Games.

What materials does the course feature?

-

Ursula K. Le Guins The Dispossessed, a novel that closely examines anarchy, utopia and gender relations.

-

Stanislaw Lems The Futurological Congress, a novel about a future in which the government uses hallucinogenic drugs to create the illusion of utopia.

-

Naomi Aldermans The Power, a novel that imagines a world in which women gain physical and political power.

What will the course prepare students to do?

This course is designed to expose students to themes in science fiction that will expand their understanding of politics and power. I ask students to explore and articulate the explicitly political aspects of science fiction. My goal is for students to leave the class with a new perspective on politics and government that will make politics more interesting to them and inform how they engage with works of science fiction, whether as books, movies or some other format.

Work Utopia: Gaming Jobs On The Canary Islands – EarlyGame

They Canary Islands do not only offer some of the most beautiful places in nature and a relaxed, balanced way of life. No: They have also become a hub for Gaming- & Animation-companies and their young, talented employees.

When we as gamers are asked whether we'd rather work or play, the answer is usually pretty clear. We'd rather start the next round of Fortnite, play FIFA with our (inferior) homies, or hit the next highlight play on our main.

The only problem is that we also want new skins, new games, hardware, and sometimes even things like food and a roof over our heads. Money has to come from somewhere and if we don't want to live with our mom in the attic, we need a job.

At some point we all asked ourselves: Where do I want to work? Where can I not only earn a decent buck, but also actually enjoy the job? Work-life balance? Nice people? Topics that are actually interesting to me? Do these even exist?

Well, you are on EarlyGame. In this respect, the topic of gaming should already fit.

If I now tell you that there are jobs for you in gaming studios where you can earn good money, live your creative life, work together with like-minded people in a team including the best work-life balance in the world - and all that in perfect weather - that probably sounds like utopia to you.

Spoiler: It's not. These jobs are reality - on the Canary Islands. But let's start from the beginning.

Maybe you have heard of Riots Arcane? Of Disney? Of James Bond? These titles have one thing in common: they are produced in the Canary Islands. Many global top studios, production companies and countless smaller publishers are based on Tenerife or Gran Canaria. Loads of the biggest current series, films and games have Canarian DNA.

But why have these islands off the west coast of Africa recently transformed themselves into a stronghold for the media industry, akin to a more relaxed (and better tempered) Silicon Valley?

That's thanks to a group of people who have been working for some time to bring the world's most exciting companies to the Canary Islands. Pablo Hernndez and his team at Canarias ZEC have been tasked by the Spanish government with turning the islands into a center for modern entertainment and media. Companies are drawn here due to a multitude of reasons:

The infrastructure on the Canary Islands is miles ahead of that on mainland Europe, in many respects. Thanks to direct access to transatlantic fiber-optic links, the internet connections on the islands are faster than would ever be possible for the rest of Europe. This is of course enormously attractive, especially for companies that communicate and work online on a global scale.

On top of that, the Spanish government rewards companies that are set up on the Canary Islands with extraordinary tax incentives. More than 50% are paid back, which allows the companies benefiting from this to invest the extra money not only in innovation and growth, but above all in young talent.

And this is where you come in: fast-growing companies in the gaming industry are looking for employees from all over the world to strengthen their teams in the Canary Islands. Animation, programming, marketing, all kinds of design, project management, testing, and pretty much any other job you can imagine in the industry are on offer.

"Companies are especially looking for young people with ambitions in the gaming world," says Luis Torres, who leads the young and immensely successful team at Drakhar Studios. The studio has been in Tenerife for 4 years.

They haven't regretted the move from Madrid, their founding city, for a second: "The tax benefits allow Drakhar to not only keep up with older and larger competitors, but in most cases outperform them. This allows us to grow quickly with a creative, young team and land exciting new projects. We cover a wide range of games from Hotel Transylvania to horror games for an older target group - so there is something for all gaming lovers and everyone on the team can work on projects that suit them," says Luis, adding that for him personally, of course, the great quality of life is also a decisive factor. The whole team simply feels comfortable, like one big, constantly growing family with the common interest of gaming.

But game developers like Drakhar Studios, No Brakes Games or Rising Pixels are not the only ones to be found in the Canary Islands. We spoke earlier about Arcane: Fortiche, the studio producing for Riot, moved to Gran Canaria from mainland Europe a few years ago.

Remy Terreaux, animation supervisor for the worldwide mega-hit, was originally one of the reasons why the animation company was drawn to the Canary Islands. Very quickly, however, it became apparent that the huge tax incentive, infrastructure and relaxed, warm atmosphere quickly landed a team of the best talent in the entire animation industry on the Canary Islands.

"It's like working with friends, you get along blindly. Everyone is here because they want to create something great together. I came here for my own family, and have now found a second one working on Arcane," says Remy, who is currently leading the Arcane: Season 2 project. On that topic: Fortiche is still looking for new talents for this project, too, who bring experience and know-how from the scene, Remy emphasizes with a wink.

So if you've always wanted to work in gaming, get creative with other young gamers every day on the most exciting projects in the scene, and live on absolutely dreamy islands:

You know where to go.

Remedios: Where new land might growis a multi-perspectival exploration of practices of healing, repair, reparation, remediation, and restitution in the TBA21 Collection. Featuring contributions from over forty artistsincluding Amazonian, Pacific, indigenous American, African-diasporic, and European perspectivesRemediosinvites its public to engage with works of art for solace, respite, and replenishment while responding to the growing desire to change the contemporary world. Contributing tools, ideas, and artistic interrogations dedicated to the (re-)generative capacities of repair, the exhibition becomes a space of encounter providing a pedagogy of learning to live with brokenness and vulnerability in troubling times.

For some artists, healing begins with ceremonial practices; the purification of the spirit; the cadences of the body; or the curative articulations of language, sacred shapes, materials, and symbols. Other artists direct their care to the land, the environment, and the collective intelligence of their respective communities. Still others attend to the reparation of scars and traumas resulting from past injuries and present anxieties. Through all these different registers, repair is work and labor, performed and actualized in the here and now, not an abstract utopia.

Contributions to the exhibition consists of works such as a large assembly and ritual tent, a kupixawa, by the Amerindian Huni Kuin in collaboration with Brazilian artist Ernesto Neto; a mothership dreamcatcher by the indigenous American artist Brad Kahlhamer; and a filmic installation by Courtney Desiree Morris, which awakens the caminos of the African diasporic Orisha (deity) Yemaya, rooted in Santera, an Afro-Caribbean religion brought to the Americas by enslaved Africans. These works lay out a critical trajectory connecting the wisdom of ancestors to the present time. They are a curative and a source of strength and replenishment in the face of collective anxiety triggered by the profound transformation of ecological, political, and economic relations.

For the French-Algerian artist Kader Attia showing the wounds and repairing them with visible staples is both a testimony to their existence and a gesture toward completing the unfinished, and often denied, work of healing. While the wounds may have been inflicted in the past, the past lives in the same wounds that remain open in the present, as Sara Ahmed writes. Against the longstanding indifference of states and institutions, healing and restitution require more than remedying losses. Healing is multi-temporal and multi-dimensional. Addressing the historical and ongoing oppression and violence enacted by the colonial world order also means devoting vast resources to communities that demand reparations. It suggests a way of working with the plurality of experiences and worldviews that simultaneously challenge, construct, and open spaces of resistance, survival, and flourishing.

In Remedios, the empowering work of repair and healing is seen as an intervention and a methodology deployed to counter the worlds destruction of life and the perpetual forces of extraction and denial. The exhibition follows the invaluable intuition and guidance of artists, embracing the anticipatory illumination of art to promote curative labor, personal healing, and social transformation. It moves us to act collectively, to feel the imperative to do so, and to strive for, following Akimel Ootham and Mojave poet Natalie Diaz, an origin + + where new land might grow + + +.

Gorizia-Nova Gorica: the concrete and revolutionary utopia of EGTC … – Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso

Transalpina Square in Gorizia, plaque marking the border line and commemorating Slovenia's entry into the EU- REDMASON/Shutterstock

EGTC GO is a European group of territorial cooperation: a tool shared between municipalities to experience territories, overcoming and transforming borders

Going from institutional protocols to concrete synergies, from political agreements to daily collaboration in an area where one rarely distinguishes between a "here" and a "there" of the Italian-Slovenian border: this is the evolution of cross-border cooperation for EGTC, European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation. For Tomaz Konrad, deputy director of EGTC, and for Tanja Curto, legal expert, the territory is unique, straddling the border and linguistic, cultural, and administrative diversities. We met with them to understand if this has always been the case and where new developments could lead.

"Along the border we have always collaborated, initially at a political-administrative level, through memoranda of understanding and discussion boards. We then took over with the intention of translating everything from a political level to a more technical sphere: an actual delegation to an "other" entity, which was an expression of everyone, of both nationalities, of all three municipalities, Gorizia, Nova Gorica, and Sempeter-Vrtojba. Before there was no cross-border entity: each municipality did its part, but without external coordination I remember the initial difficulties, with the first draft of the statute of the EGTC in October 2008, which was discussed, amended, and then approved in 2011, and with the appointment as president of Franco Frattini, then an MP elected in Friuli", introduces Tanja Curto.

Where did the push to create a "third party" body come from, which is usually considered a bureaucratic burden?

Tomaz Konrad: Without a doubt, from the bottom up, from the citizens, from the municipalities, from the people who then understood its strategic value. Previously, each partner had internal experts who collaborated on individual projects, so there was no real interaction. Now, however, working together is daily routine. We as EGTCs have a single administration made up of people who come from both sides of the border, we speak daily with people from all three municipalities, and this produces new ideas, new projects. Hence our vision of the area as a unicum: for us it is "the territory". And if before the mayors met two or three times a year, now they speak also three times a day. But obviously it would not have been possible without the regulatory basis that arrived with the European regulation of2006which established the cross-border territorial collaboration groups.

EGTC GO

The EGTC GO is an Italian public body with legal personality, founded in 2011 by the municipalities of Gorizia, NovaGorica, and Sempeter-Vrtojba to identify and address common challenges that can make the cross-border territory more competitive and attractive. The EGTC GO has jurisdiction over the territory of the three cities: it can go beyond the borders and face, for the first time, the challenges of a cooperation that plans and implements together, no longer thinking of three separate municipalities, but of one cross-border city, with no more divisions.

How was and how is the reception in the media? Do people speak with distrust of the EGTC, perhaps in Slovenia as Italian initiatives, and in Italy as Slovenian ideas?

Tanja Curto: No, it has never happened. If anything, there is some difficulty in getting all aspects of our work understood, which is very technical and which moves between different levels of legislation and regulations, from the European to the local one. However, our technicians have been able to transform cross-border cooperation into something practical, concrete at a territorial level, and we are slowly able to tell it, now that the project ideas are taking shape.

Tomaz Konrad: For us, there are no linguistic or national distinctions, we have never counted how many of our 11 employees are Slovenian and how many Italian these are not staff from the three municipalities, but staff from the EGTC. Of course, we take into account the interests of the various municipalities, but for us the primary interest is the interest of all three, not the sum but the synergy, which as always goes beyond the sum of the three. And the press also respects this vision, the newspapers write that these are works by the EGTC, not by the Italians or Slovenians.

Tanja Curto: However, quotas exist for the EGTC assembly, where the 14 members are half Italian and half Slovenian, and the Slovenian ones are the expression of the two municipalities (Nova Gorica and Sempeter-Vrtojba) on a demographic basis. The technical committees are instead made of people proposed by the municipalities, but not necessarily on a national or linguistic basis, competence is worth more. Let's say it's a fifty-fifty (50-50) shuffle. It's not mine or yours, it's ours, period.

Gorizia-Nova Gorica - bepsy/Shutterstock

Among the concrete things you have implemented, the Healthcare projectfor the integration of some healthcare services, the Isonzo-Soca cross-border park for cycle mobility, and support for Gorizia European Capital of Culture 2025. How is the response from the territory?

Tanja Curto: Involvement is always very high, also because our goals each time arise from established needs. Just look at the large participation we are seeing in the tenders for the "Smallprojectsfu nd", the fund for small projects in support of Gorizia 2025: we want to create a cultural, logistical, and economic substrate that can continue over time. And here there is a lot of desire to do. We filled the theatres during the info-days and are now collecting applications to distribute the first 3 million Euros by rewarding small initiatives between 30,000 and 200,000 Euros. In this case, the territory we are addressing is wider and includes five regions in Slovenia, all of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and the province of Venice.

When you talk about the territory, we understand how the frontier is truly invisible to you...

Tanja Curto: With Slovenia's entry into the Euro area, every barrier dissolved, and there was no longer any tangible sign of the border, except in the memory of people and those who had lived through more complicated times. But young people no longer say "I'm going there", if anything I go to that particular place, I go to that certain shop: they say the name of the place, not "in Italy" or "in Slovenia".

Tomaz Konrad: The proof of how connected cities are was during the pandemic. When Slovenia brutally closed its border overnight, there was a general uprising both here and there. All the ties consolidated over the last twenty years, exchanges, contacts, and so on, were broken: parents who take their children to school on the other side, or for sports activities, and families who live a little here a little there. Here, with that closure we understood how much we had forgotten about the border. On the other hand, unfortunately we also noticed how everything good that had been done over so many years could be erased with such obtuse policies, in a flash. Thankfully that did not happen, but we came close.

If you had to explain your work with a concrete example, which project would you choose?

Tanja Curto: Our technical role collides with the bureaucratic difficulties complicated by the regulatory stratification of institutions and states, therefore even a small work is a great work for us. I'm thinking of the cycle-pedestrian footbridge over the river: an infrastructure in Slovenia, created by applying the Slovenian contract code, but created by us who are an Italian public law body. A small example, but significant for us.

Tomaz Konrad: I think of what we have achieved withbikesharing in the city: you can pick up a bike in the Slovenian part and return it in the Italian part, a single card, a single tariff, all bypassing the complications that would have arisen having two managements different and separate nationalities. For me, this represents what we could achieve for other services by applying real cross-border cooperation: my dream is to be able to achieve joint cross-border public services, with a single manager covering the territory, on both sides of the border.

Indianapolis Colts Owner Jim Irsay Ponies Up to Free Lolita the Orca … – Miami New Times

Update published 1:50 p.m. 3/30/2023: On March 30, the Miami Seaquarium announced that it had entered into a contract with the nonprofit group Friends of Lolita, AKA Friends of Toki, to transport Lolita the orca to an ocean sanctuary.

Owing partly to a contribution from Colts owner Jim Irsay, the group says it hopes to relocate Lolita within the next 18 to 24 months.

The original story follows below.

Is it actually happening? Is Lolita the orca finally going home to the Pacific Northwest after more than 50 years in captivity at Miami Seaquarium?

In an announcement of a "historic initiative" to "return our beloved Lolita from Miami Seaquarium to her home water," the marine park and nonprofit Friends of Toki claim a move is in the works, hinting at a partnership with Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay.

Irsay might be the angel investor to swoop in and bankroll the multimillion-dollar project, which would involve transporting Lolita, AKA Tokitae or Toki, to a sanctuary in her native waters in the Salish Sea.

The Colts owner and CEO is listed as a special guest at a March 30 press conference at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami, during which the plan's details are expected to be announced. Irsay teased his involvement with the project in January, tweeting: "We're gonna try to save Lolita the Whale but I'm gonna need help and ocean blessings. Lots of red tape and hurdles. More info to come on this rescue effort. No guarantees."

The initiative comes on the heels of the March 9 death of 47-year-old Kiska, Canada's last captive orca, whose fatal bacterial infection grabbed global headlines and served as a reminder of how fragile older, captive orcas' health can be.

For years there had been plans to create a seaside sanctuary where Lolita could live out the rest of her life but amid staunch opposition to such a move from the Seaquarium's previous owners, those plans were, well, just plans.

Much has changed, however, in the past year and a half.

Lolita, who is in her mid-to-late 50s and nearing the end of typical orca life expectancy, was removed from public exhibition in March 2022 while ill with an infection that nearly killed her. She was no longer the star of the Miami Seaquarium, no longer generating revenue for the park, yet still racking up hefty medical bills.

In December 2022, Miami Seaquarium's new owner, Eduardo Albor, revealed that he'd be open to moving the famed orca from her tank to the Salish Sea off the coast of Washington state. Albor's proclamation about being "100 percent" committed to efforts to release Lolita set the animal-rights world abuzz, but, at the time, it was a cross-country trip without a set destination.

Meanwhile, Irsay's office contacted New Times after reading our story about the Seaquarium's change of heart and said the Colts' owner was interested in helping to free the orca.

A partnership apparently has since materialized between Irsay, Friends of Toki, and Albor.

Details are scant, but Irsay certainly appears able to provide substantial financial backing to develop and maintain a sea pen or other type of sanctuary. If she's moved to her native waters on the west coast, Lolita's new custodians may include indigenous Salish people, the Lummi Tribe, who view her and other orcas as sacred beings. The group has strongly advocatedfor Lolita's release from the marine park.

The project is expected to cost at least $15 million, according to Lummi Tribe media relations.

Irsay's office declined to offer further details and said more information would be released at the March 30 event.

Phil Demers, who got to know Kiska while working at the marine park Marineland in Canada for 12 years, says observers should temper their expectations. He says that a whale sanctuary was supposed to have been built for Kiska in Nova Scotia as far back as 2019, but the project was not completed before her death, on account of environmental concerns with the proposed site, logistical hurdles, and what Demers deems to have been unrealistic planning.

"I see a timely PR statement," Demers says of the recent announcement about Lolita, AKA Toki. "They see Kiska has died. They see more eyes on Toki and criticism growing."

During a flyover in December 2022 above the Miami Seaquarium, the animal-rights activist says, he saw Lolita's tank filled with green algae and other muck while the dolphin tanks appeared pristine. It reminded him of maintenance issues in Kiska's tank and convinced him that keeping Lolita at the Miami park while waiting for a faraway whale sanctuary to be built would put her health in peril.

"I'm seeing Toki in the same condition Kiska was in, and I'm seeing the exact-same messages being repeated," says Demers. "We can't continue to wait for a whale utopia to be built and wait for optimal conditions for her to enter this utopia... The longer we wait for perfection, the likelier it becomes that she is going to die."

He's advocating for the whale to be removed immediately to another, larger-scale marine park that, in his view, may be better equipped to care for her.

Veterinarian Jim McBain, whom Friends of Toki enlisted, said in December that water quality was getting better in the Seaquarium orca tank thanks to changes in the filter media and attempts to modernize the water recirculation system, which he conceded was outdated.

The Seaquarium tells New Times that there has been "significant improvement to the water quality" since the Dolphin Co., Albor's company, bought the Seaquarium in 2021. The company owns more than 30 marine-themed amusement parks and dolphin enclosures worldwide.

Lolita the Orca has been confined to Miami Seaquarium for more than five decades.

"These things will take time," says Michael Mountain, cofounder of the group.

As for Kiska's release, his group says that negotiations with Marineland had been stymied for an extended period after the park was criminally charged in Canada for alleged mistreatment of animals. (The charges were later dropped.) Mountain maintains that the COVID-19 pandemic also interfered with plans for Kiska's transport.

Charles Vinick, who serves on the Whale Sanctuary Project board and is the executive director of Friends of Toki, previously worked on the effort to move the captive orca Keiko back into the wild in the late 1990s. Keiko had starred in the 1993 movie Free Willy before a campaign mounted to free him from captivity. He was released into Icelandic waters in 2002 but died of pneumonia the following year at the estimated age of 27.

Plans for Lolita have not contemplated a full release to the wild but rather a transport to a monitored sanctuary.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) issued a statement saying that moving Lolita out of Miami Seaquarium would bring "long-awaited relief after five miserable decades in a cramped tank," which federal inspectors previously determined does not meet minimum size requirements.

"If Lolita is finally returned to her home waters, there will be cheers from around the world, including from PETA, which has pursued several lawsuits on Lolita's behalf and battered the Seaquarium with protests demanding her freedom for years," said PETA vice president and general counsel Jared Goodman.

Before she makes a trip back home, Lolita will likely undergo transport training that dolphin experts have long said would be a key part of preparing for the daunting move. Dolphin trainers interviewed by New Times over the years noted that it would be helpful if some of her Seaquarium trainers, with whom she's formed strong relationships, accompanied her en route. They are the best bets in making her feel safe throughout the trip.

A veterinary report released in February by McBain indicated that Lolita's health was improving from the infection.

"It's too early to get excited," reads the February 28 report. "However, there is reason to allow some optimism to enter the discussion."
