3-D Printed Ovaries Restore Fertility – Anti Aging News

It is now possible to print 3-D organs. In fact, ovary structures can be printed to replicate the design of real ovaries. A study conducted at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and McCormick School of Engineering determined these 3-D printed ovaries can even produce offspring. The results of the study were published last week in Nature Communications.

How 3-D Printed Ovaries Produce Offspring

A female mouse's ovary can be replaced witha bioprosthetic ovary. The mouse is then able to ovulate and even give birth to pups. Mother miceare also able to nurse their young. The bioprosthetic ovaries are built with 3-D printed scaffolds that hold immature eggs. These ovaries have increased hormone production and restored fertility.

Why the Study is Important

The research is proof that bioprosthetic ovaries have durable functionality across the long haul. There is no longer a need to use cadavers to build organ structures and restore health tissue. This is the breakthrough in regenerative medicine scientists have long hoped for.

Why the Research is Unique

This research is distinct from that conducted by other labs as the design of the scaffold and material (ink) is highly nuanced. The material is made of gelatin, a biological hydrogel created with collagen that is safe for use in humans. The research group knew the scaffold would have to be comprised of organic materials solid enough to be handled in surgery and porous enough to interact with body tissues. They used a gelatin that is self-supporting and capable of building several layers.

No other scientists have printed such gelatin with this level of self-support. This support makes it possible for the ovarian follicles and cells around an immature egg cell tosurvive in the ovary. In a nutshell, this is the first study to show scaffold architecture makes a meaningful difference in the survival of follicles. This would not be possible without a 3-D printer.

What the Study Means for Humans

The scientists' primary objective for creating bioprosthetic ovaries was the restoration of hormone and fertility in women who have endured cancer treatments and now face a heightened risk of infertility. Some young cancer patients' ovaries do not function at a high level and the use of hormone replacement therapy is necessary to spur puberty.

The scaffold used in the study serves to recapitulate the manner in which the ovary functions. It could serve this purpose from the age of puberty, into adulthood, menopause and beyond. Furthermore, the generation of 3-D printed implants to substitute for soft tissue will likely impact future work concerning soft tissue regenerative medicine.

A Look at how 3-D Printing Works

Think of the 3-D printing of an ovary structure as a connecting of a child's Lincoln Logs. These logs at positioned at right angles to build structures. The distance between the logs determines whether the building has doors, windows and so on. 3-D printing is similar except it is performed with depositing filaments. The distance between filaments and advancing angle between the layers can be controlled with ease. The result is the generation of highly precise pore geometries and sizes. Such 3-D printed structures are referred to as scaffolds like those used in the repair/construction of buildings.

Scaffolding supports the materials necessary to repair the structure until it is eventually removed. The remaining structure is self-sustaining without the assistance of the scaffold. 3-D printed scaffolds are implanted into the woman and its pores optimize how the immature eggs are positioned within the scaffold. This support ensures the survival of the immature egg cells andthe cells necessary for hormone production.

Prairie Fields now offers aesthetic services in Fremont – Fremont Tribune

Prairie Fields Family Medicine has expanded to offer aesthetic services, the first of its kind in Fremont.

Prairie Fields Aesthetic Services began offering skin treatments at the beginning of May. Dr. Tom Wolf said they can help with many things involving skin care. They can treat scaring, brown spots that come with age, fine lines and wrinkles, solar damage and sun spots, acne and acne scaring, leg and facial veins, angiomas and more.

Now, Fremonters will have a local option for these treatments, instead of having to travel to Omaha.

Its something thats new to the community, Wolf said. No one else is doing anything like this in Fremont or in Dodge County.

In addition to treating existing imperfections, theyll help with general skin care. Aesthetic Services has partnered with EltaMD, who offers sunscreen and other skin care products like cleansers and moisturizers that are available only through physicians offices.

Wolf said the EltaMD products can help prevent skin cancer, the most common cancer.

We at Prairie Fields Aesthetics are taking a proactive approach to prevention by educating our patients and staff how they can protect themselves and prevent skin cancer, he said. All of our sunscreens are physical in nature and contain no chemicals, while providing protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

The products help with prevention and are useful after treatments. Debra Mullins, a representative from EltaMD said the sunscreen is best for anti-aging in addition to preventing skin cancer. She said 99 percent of aging in skin lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation is from the sun.

People here in the Midwest, theyre outside, Wolf said. We spend time outside a lot. Its important that we can provide products to help maintain their health.

They also offer hair removal. Wolf said hair removal is popular for underarms and is relatively permanent after about five treatments.

Prairie Fields Family Medicine has been in business since 1981. The focus at Prairie Fields is still family medicine, Wolf said, but these new services mean they can do more to help patients feel comfortable in their skin. They made the commitment to add the services at Prairie Fields in March.

Its a new endeavor that were going down, Tom Wolf said. We wanted to offer patients in the community the same type of great care that we provide here, but also for their aesthetic needs.

The treatments can help reduce perceived aging, he said.

When you look at someone, you dont even really know that youre doing it, but the more changes to their complexion that you see, variability, the older you generally think a person is, Wolf said. As we age, and sun affects our skin, it has more variability to it: freckles, brown spots, age spots.

Consultations are free. Treatment plans are then customized based on the individuals needs.

We really try to look at the whole patient and figure out what things are most concerning to them and come up with the treatment, said Misti Wolf, a registered nurse and Tom Wolfs wife.

In the short time since theyve opened, Wolf said things have been great.

Its been very well received, he said. When patients come in for treatments and they leave just excited and happy, really joyful about it, thats a fun thing to do day in and day out.

Tom Wolf, M.D., works with his wife Misti Wolf andSam Renter, both registered nurses. To prepare they took training on operating a laser for treatment known as laser genesis.

The first patients have been nervous to be operated on with the laser, Tom Wolf said, but have come away pleasantly surprised. Its not painful and redness fades after a few hours. Prairie Fields Aesthetic Services also uses a limelight procedure to treat patients.

Misti Wolf said she treated a woman with spider veins in her legs. For the patient, it was more personal than an issue that others noticed.

We treated her and she pretty much instantly noticed a difference, she said. She was thrilled. She was truly ecstatic.

Experiences like that are beneficial for more than the patient; Tom Wolf and registered nurses Misti Wolf and Sam Renter said helping customers be happier with their appearance has been rewarding.

Its been exciting to have patients come in wanting to improve their skin conditions and making them comfortable in their own skin, Misti Wolf said.

When you look better, you feel better, Tom Wolf added. That translates to improvements in well-being all around.

Heart Attack Risk Raised by Respiratory Infections – Anti Aging News

Research findings confirm that a respiratory infection can trigger a heart attack, increasing the risk by 17 times in the 7 days following the infection.

Researchers at the University of Sydney have determined the risk of suffering a heart attack is 17 times higher in the week after a respiratory infection. The study took place at Royal North Shore Hospital. The findings were recently published in the Internal Medicine Journal. It is the first study to show a link between respiratory infections like bronchitis, influenza and pneumonia and a heightened risk of heart attack in individuals confirmed through coronary angiography. Coronary angiography is an X-Ray that pinpoints artery blockages in the heart.

Why the Findings Matter

The findings are of significance as they confirm that respiratory infections can serve as a trigger for heart attacks. The study's data showed that a heightened risk for heart attack does not solely occur at the beginning of the respiratory symptoms. The risk peaks in the first week and slowly decreases. However, it is elevated for a full month.

About the Study

The study involved nearly 600 consecutive patients who suffered a heart attack as a result of a coronary artery blockage. They provided information on recent and common occurrences of respiratory infection symptoms. Just over 20 percent of the patients reported respiratory infection symptoms within the first month of their heart attack. Exactly 17 percent of the patients reported respiratory infection symptoms within a week of the heart attack.

Each subject was questioned about his activities prior to the onset of the heart attack. These interviews included questions about whether they endured recent flu-like sickness with a sore throat and/or fever. If a subject reported a cough, sore throat, sinus pain, fever or flu-like symptoms, he was considered to be affected. The same is true of those who reported a diagnosis of bronchitis or pneumonia.

Another analysis was performed amongst those with symptoms limited to the upper respiratory tract. These symptoms included sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis and the common cold. Subjects who reported fairly mild infection symptoms of the upper respiratory tract endured less risk. However, this risk was still boosted 13-fold.

Though upper respiratory infections are not as severe, they are more common than the symptoms of lower respiratory tract infections. The research group desired to understand their relationship to the risk of heart attacks. This information is especially important during the winter. Heart attacks tend to occur at higher rates in the winter months in countries around the world. Part of the reason for this increase is due to an elevation of respiratory infections during the colder months. Medical professionals far and wideadvise people to take precautions to minimize exposure to infection, whether it is a pneumonia vaccine, flu vaccine or other measures.

Why Respiratory Infections Trigger Heart Attacks

Though no one is completely certain why respiratory infections cause heart attacks, researchers point to the fact that blood clots occur at a higher frequency when one has a respiratory infection. There is also an increased tendency for other alterations in blood flow, inflammation, and toxins harming blood vessels. However, the odds of a single episode of a respiratory infection causing a heart attack are low. Yet it is still possible for such an infection to cause a coronary event.

Everyone should consider preventative strategies and take note of the symptoms that are an indication of a heart attack. As time progresses, medical professionals will eventually pinpoint effective treatment strategies to minimize the risk of heart attacks. This is especially important for those who face a higher susceptibility to heart attacks.

Fish Oil Component Boosts Damaged Brain, Retinal Cells – Anti Aging News

Researchers at Louisiana State University have determined that fish oil boosts damaged brain cells as well as damaged retinal cells. The study was spearheaded by Nicolas Bazan, the Director of LSU's Health New Orleans School of Medicine's Neuroscience Center of Excellence. The research was performed in a model of human retinal pigment epithelial cells and ischemic stroke.

About NPD1

NPD1 is an acronym that stands for neuroprotectin D1. This is a lipid messenger made from omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid or DHA. It is made in an on-demand fashion when cell survival is threatened. NPD1 was identified and named back in 2004 by Dr. Bazan. Oxidative stress is created by the steady production of harmful free radicals. It sets the stage for cell death. Such death is hastened by catastrophic happenings like blinding-eye diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, and ischemic stroke.

The Findings

This study is considered a breakthrough as it provides the first evidence that NDP1, a signaling molecule, prompts the creation of a protective protein against harmful free radicals as well as brain cell and retinal cell injury. Dr. Bazan's research team found that the systematic administering of NPD1 a single hour following two hours of experimental stroke boosted the creation and accessibility of ring finger protein 146 called Iduna. Iduna allows for rapid DNA repair and protection against programmed cell death that occurs in stroke known as "parthanatos". This occurs as Iduna reduces the generation of PARP, a harmful protein.

The research team's findings also show that NDP1 boosted the generation of Iduna and protection in two distinct types of RPE cells, primary RPE and ARPE-19, that were enduring uncompensated oxidative stress. It was determined the effect of NDP1 on Iduna activity peaked about six hours following the beginning of oxidative stress. A dose-dependent curve displayed heightened Iduna activity commencing s 25 nM NPD1 in each type of RPE cells. The results indicate NDP1 causes Iduna activity in a selective manner in instances when uncompensated oxidative stress stimulates the creation of NPD1 that consequently triggers Iduna.

The findings are important as they show that NPD1 created in an on-demand manner, modulates the amount of Iduna protein necessary for cell survival. Iduna is important for the reprogramming of cell existence and proper functionality. A continued study of this protein might soon lead to key developments in terms of therapeutic interventions for ischemic stroke and retinal degeneration.

INDIALANTIC At the new Radiantly Healthy Vitamin Infusion Drip Lounge in Indialantic a couple months ago, Mark Petrillo was looking for help with a nagging cold.

Aging has been a fact of life ever since it was created. Human beings go through various phases of life from being child to youth to being adult with youth being the best part of life from health point of view. Good health, strong muscles, an efficient immune system, a sharp memory and a healthy brain are characteristic of ideal youth. The hormones work at their peak capacity during the youth years.

Anti-Aging medicine aims to maintain or achieve this irrespective of chronological age i.e. to stay healthy and biologically efficient.

The prestigious scientific journal, Biogerontology, defines aging as: The progressive failing ability of the body's own intrinsic and genetic powers to defend, maintain and repair itself in order to keep working efficiently.

We are now living in the information age. Medical knowledge is increasing at an amazing rate-doubling every three years. This doubling rate of information is progressively decreasing. The world is changing and so is the way we view our health and well being as we age.

Aging has been believed to be inherent, universal, progressive natural phenomenon. It is detrimental with no benefits except perhaps wisdom. But now there is a paradigm shift in looking at the aging process based on firmly documented evidence in medical and scientific literature. If we plot the health in y-axis and the number of years in x-axis, the curve of life is like a triangle which is skewed with its apex at 25-30 years. Anti-aging helps to make it rectangle.

Many natural aging mechanisms frequently result in actual diseases. From this we can conclude that fighting an aging process may well bring about an improvement of an age related illness.

All animals or plants eventually show signs of aging even if they are in a protected environment. When we look at Ayurveda which prescribes plants or their components and extracts to fight against illness, one has to wonder why? Nature created these plant chemicals to help them protect against diseases or aging. Humans have later adapted these chemicals for their own use to increase their chances of maintaining their health.

Anti-aging medicine is an evolving branch of medical science and applied medicine. It treats the underlying causes of aging and aims at alleviating any age related ailment. Its goal is to extend the healthy lifespan of humans having youthful characteristics.

Conventional and alternative medical disciplines are used in an integrated approach to achieve the best possible result for the patient. It is a holistic discipline, seeing the patient as a whole and not as someone having an isolated disease.

Those physicians interested in studying age related medicine can do so by attending courses offered by various organization across the globe with predominant being The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine or A4M. It is not yet formally accredited by the American Medical Association. Some scientists and physicians take offense at the name Anti-Aging as they think it is unscientific. They have suggested terms such as Age Management Medicine, Advanced Preventive Medicine, Interventive Biogerontology. But the underlying principles remain the same.

Aging is a progressive failure of metabolic processes. There is a concept of pause as put forth by Dr. Eric Braverman indicating that every organ ages at a different rate. To a certain extent it is based on hormones. All these have been put forth into various theories as follows:

Free Radical Theory

The Nuroendocrine Theory

Telomerase Theory of Aging

The Wear and Tear Theory

The Rate of Living Theory

The Waste Product Accumulation Theory

The Cross-linking Theory

The Immune Theory

Theories of Errors and Repairs

The Order to Disorder Theory

Some of these contradict and others overlap. But underlying these are three main biochemical processes involved in aging. These are oxidation, glycation and methylation. Other relevant processes are chronic inflammation and hormonal deregulation.

Free radicals are a group of simple compounds with an electron missing from their chemical structure. This makes them unstable. They seek out other chemical structures from which they can acquire an electron and in the process make them unstable.

Free radicals in small and controlled quantities are useful in everyday metabolism. They take part in several normal reactions within the body including breathing. These free radicals are mainly produced during oxygen metabolism within the cells. The problem starts when the production of these free radicals increases and goes out of control.

Free radical reactions can be divided into three stages: Initiation, Propagation and Termination. The defense mechanisms against these are inactivating them within the cells soon after production, removing them by scavenging antioxidants and increasing the elimination of material already damaged by free radicals.

To put it in practice means to prevent exposure to free radicals from sources such as pollution, bad diet, and smoking and take antioxidants. The term antioxidant refers to chain-breaking compound. Broadly antioxidant is any substance, that when present at low concentrations compared with those of an oxidizable substrate significantly delays or inhibits oxidation of that substrate.

Free radicals damage the cell membrane which is composed of lipids and proteins. Their interaction results in the production of the chemical Melondialdehyde which is very harmful, contributing to another important aging process called glycation.

When glucose molecules and other sugars such as fructose attach themselves to proteins, it is called glycation. This results in brownish discoloration of tissues. The binding of sugar to protein causes cross linking of proteins. Cross linked proteins cause more damage by reacting with free radicals and other toxins to create Advanced Glycation Endproducts (AGEs). These AGEs bind to cells at special attachment sites called RAGEs (Receptor for AGEs). These result in the production of several harmful chemicals damaging tissues.

AGEs are found in most tissues in the body and their concentration increases from the age of twenty onward.

However nutrient such as carnosine and other Anti-Aging supplements/drugs can help in breaking this process.

Unfortunately the process of glycation not only affects proteins, but also interferes with DNA. A cross linked DNA molecule is of no use at all. There are drugs being investigated which can actually break this bond between cross linked proteins which are glycated.

When methyl groups are being added to different constituents of the proteins, DNA and other molecules to keep them in good, active condition, it is called methylation. This is necessary for the normal maintenance of tissues and is usually kept at a healthy levels naturally by the body. Methylation of certain parts of the DNA causes permanent switching off of unnecessary genes and saves the body from abnormal DNA division. This means that methylation of those particular sections of DNA blocks any abnormal DNA from being passed onto the future generations of cells.

Any chronic inflammation process affects methylation because the immune system, which is heavily involved in fighting inflammation, gorges itself on methyl groups, leaving nothing for other tissues of the body.

Low methylation is reflected in the increasing levels of homocysteine, which is found in chronic inflammatory processes such as lupus, heart disease and diabetes. Increased intake of methylators reduces the risk of these diseases.

There are scientists who believe that most age related changes in the body are due to chronic inflammation. When there is chronic inflammation, the body tissues are eaten away by toxic chemicals, resulting in dementia, thickening of the arteries, arthritis, diabetes, hormonal imbalance and so on. Taking low dose of anti-inflammatory chemicals such as Aspirin keeps age related inflammation at bay. However, this is not a widely shared opinion. A diet containing nutrients i.e. fish (contains anti-inflammatory oils), fruit and vegetables, particularly berries (which are packed full of antioxidants and inflammation-fighting flavonoids) along with supplements like alpha lipoic acid and co-enzyme Q10 are helpful.

There is little doubt about the important role hormones play in our lives and in aging. The pacemakers of youth, these precious little chemicals keep us young, healthy and vibrant. In general, aging results in imbalance of hormones in the body or one can also ask Does hormonal imbalance cause aging? Hormones such as growth hormone, melatonin and DHEA need to be replaced or reactivated during aging to prevent the body from falling apart. It is also important to make sure that the binding sites of the hormones need to be in good working order. According to Dr. Eric Braverman, proponent of pause theory, every organ in the body ages at a different rate. The classical example of this is the menopause in females and the literature is replete with Hormone Replacement Therapy for the same. It seems prudent to replace the other hormones in physiological limits. Hormone replacement therapy is likely to play a very important role in maintaining health in time to come. It is very important here to make the distinction between the Synthetic hormones and the Bioidentical hormones which is discussed later.

Enhance health through eating a hormonally correct diet

Enrich body with optimum doses of proven antioxidants and nutraceuticals

Improve physical exercise performance, which includes aerobic, anaerobic and flexibility training

Replace hormones to levels to those of 20-30 years old.

The importance of food we eat can be summarized by what Dr. Barry Sears said and I quote: The food you eat is probably the most powerful drug you will encounter. But to use this drug correctly, you have to apply the hormonal rules about the food that haven't changed in the past 40 million years and are unlikely to change anytime soon.

Balancing Insulin and glucagon activity is at the core of eating a hormonally correct diet. The hormonally correct diet contains 30% protein, 50% carbohydrates and 20% fat along with vitamins, minerals and drinking plenty of water which is filtered, mineralized and magnetized. Eating small meals every 4-5 hours and eating the proper ratio of proteins, carbohydrates and fat at each meal or snack can mean a difference between illness and good health.

Eating proper food for one's height, weight and body type and activity level is the foundation for a better quality of life and greater longevity.

Dr. Alex Lief, MD Harvard Medical School has said and I quote: Exercise is the closest thing we have to an anti-aging pill. Regular physical activity has been a way of life for virtually every person who has reached the age of 100 years in sound condition. Exercise is medicine. If you think that smoking is not good, the following statement will enlighten. Not exercising has the equivalent impact on your health as smoking one and one half pack of cigarettes a day.

These include various antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. These include but are not limited to Vitamin A, C, E, mineral selenium, glutathione, superoxide dismutase, Coenzyme Q10, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Carnosine.

First we have to distinguish the synthetic hormones and bioidentical hormones. The former differ in chemical structure from the later which exactly have the same structure as the hormones we have in our body. Hence they can not be patented. These are available as injection, tablets, and creams. They are derived from Yam or Soy. The goal of hormone replacement therapy is to bring them to the level of youth. Again it has to be done after complete evaluation and under the guidance of an Anti-Aging physician.

The future will involve manipulating genes, increasing utilization of stem cells (embryonic and adult) and targeted delivery of nutrients and drugs using nanotechnology.
