HONOLULU--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cardax, Inc. (Cardax) (OTCQB:CDXI) and the University of Hawaii (UH) announced today that Cardaxs proprietary astaxanthin compound, CDX-085, demonstrated an almost 90% increase in FOXO3 gene expression in mice (p=0.024).

This research was conducted by UH scientists Dr. Bradley Willcox, M.D., Professor and Director of Research at the Department of Geriatric Medicine, John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii (JABSOM) and Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Kuakini Hawaii Lifespan and Healthspan Studies, and Dr. Richard Allsopp, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Institute of Biogenesis Research at JABSOM.

Previously in humans, Dr. Willcox and colleagues discovered genetic variants of FOXO3 in humans that protect against aging (Willcox et al. Proc US Natl Acad Sci 2008).

This observation has since been replicated in >20 independent studies. At the American Heart Association Meeting in 2015, it was announced that the protective FOXO3 allele is strongly associated with reduced coronary heart disease mortality (p=0.00001) (AHA Meeting 2015) and later published in the leading gerontology journal (Willcox et al. J Gerontol Biol Med Sci 2016).

These results augment earlier findings in the C. elegans roundworm, a well-accepted model of aging, said Dr. Allsopp, where astaxanthin extended lifespan by 16-30%.

All of us have the FOXO3 gene, which protects against aging in humans, said Dr. Willcox. But about one in three persons carry a version of the FOXO3 gene that is associated with longevity. By activating the FOXO3 gene common in all humans, we can make it act like the "longevity" version. Through this research, we have shown that astaxanthin activates the FOXO3 gene.

Introduction: Sirtuin1 (SIRT1) acts as an anti-aging protein due to anti-apoptotic, anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effect and is implicated in several diseases including diabetes or cardiovascular problems. SIRT1 renal overexpression indicates oxidative stress. Similarly, Klotho was primarily exposed as anti-aging factor. It is primary produced in kidney. Its deficiency is associated with progression of chronic kidney disease and heart disorders.Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the serum concentration of sirtuin1 and Klotho in hemodialysis (HD) patients compared to healthy volunteers in regard to age, blood pressure control, residual kidney function (RKF), diabetes, cardiovascular disease, dialysis vintage and type of dialyzer.Patients and Methods: The serum level of SIRT1 and Klotho was evaluated using ELISA tests in 103 HD patients, median age 67 years and in 21 volunteers. Blood pressure, RRF, echocardiography and dialysis parameters were assessed. HD group was divided according to the presence/absence of RKF.Results: The serum SIRT1 level was higher (28.4 vs 2.71ng/mL, p< 0.0001) and Klotho was lower (433.9 vs 756.6pg/mL, p< 0.0001) in HD then in control group. Klotho was lower in those without RKF (387.2 vs 486.2pg/mL, p=0.028). SIRT1 positively correlated with hemodialysis vintage. Klotho negatively correlated with left ventricular posterior wall thickness. There was no significant relationship between SIRT1 and Klotho level and age, blood pressure control, type of dialyzer, Kt/V and diabetes. Multivariate analysis revealed association of SIRT1 with ejection fraction (B 0.72; p=0.32).Conclusion: Elevated SIRT1 and lower Klotho concentration are associated with impaired kidney function. The decrease in levels of Klotho may also indicate heart hypertrophy in hemodialysis patients. The role of anti-aging proteins, particularly SIRT1 as biomarkers/predictors of oxidative stress, inflammation and cardiovascular diseases need further examination.

Student stuns teacher with surprising test answer: Had honestly never seen this – Yahoo Lifestyle

A Kentucky high schooler is earning plenty of online kudos after his teacher shared the heartwarming way he concluded his exam.

Winston Lee, who teaches history at Letcher County Central High School in Whitesburg, Ky., shared a photo of the test to Facebook on Feb. 21.

The image, which has since been shared more than 62,000 times, showed the offer one student made just before turning in his nearly perfect exam.

Have to shout this out. Had honestly never seen this, Lee wrote, before showing the handwritten note from what he described as a straight A+ guy.

If you could, could you give my bonus points to whoever scores the lowest? the students note asked.

Lee told Good Morning America he was surprised by the message, which had zero specifications about who it would be helping.

He didnt care if he considered them a friend, didnt care if they were cool, didnt matter to him what situation had caused them to score lower, he just wanted to help, be kind, commit a loving act, Lee wrote of his student.

The teacher said that the students final score would have been a 99 out of 100, if not for his five-point donation. He told Good Morning America that he decided to go through with the offer, giving the points to a student who wouldnt have passed the test without them.

She was really thankful so it turned out great, Lee said. She does not know who gave her the points.

Lees post attracted thousands of comments, with many Facebook users praising the students selfless and kind act. Others, however, were more critical, saying they saw the donation as a handout.

Nice gesture but it doesnt help anyone, one user wrote.

How is getting points you didnt earn 1) going to get you to understand the material and 2) help you live up to the expectations of the higher grade you just received? another commented.

But Lee stands by his decision, telling Good Morning America that, in his experience, some students have life situations or personal traits that make it harder to succeed.

Not all are great test-takers or in a comfortable situation at home that allows them to focus on studying, he said. I feel really great that it helped this student from 58 points to passing. We dont know what her situation may have been.

Metformin could be the first FDA approved antiaging drug – Next Big Future

For the last two decades, researchers started comparing the health of diabetics on metformin to those taking other diabetes drugs.

Metformin-takers tended to be healthier in all sorts of ways. They lived longer and had fewer cardiovascular events, and in at least some studies they were less likely to suffer from dementia and Alzheimers. Most surprising of all, they seemed to get cancer far less frequentlyas much as 25 to 40 percent less than diabetics taking two other popular medications. When they did get cancer, they tended to outlive diabetics with cancer who were taking other medications.

Lewis Cantley, the director of the Cancer Center at Weill Cornell Medicine, once put it, Metformin may have already saved more people from cancer deaths than any drug in history. Nobel laureate James Watson (of DNA-structure fame), who takes metformin off-label for cancer prevention, once suggested that the drug appeared to be our only real clue into the business of fighting the disease.

Metformin is from an ancient herb and the herb has been prescribed since medieval times. Metformin can cost 5 cents per pill.

Metformin is already prescribed off-label to treat obesity, polycystic ovarian syndrome, infertility, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and acne.

Nir Barzilai, director of the Institute for Aging Research at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, like most in his field, was aware of the good news about metformin that had been trickling out year after year.

Barzilai is confident that metformin is good enough to be the first treatment approved by the FDA to counter aging. He has maintained this confidence ever since he read a 2014 study that reviewed the fate of 90,400 type 2 diabetics taking either metformin or another medication. The metformin patients in the study not only outlived the diabetics taking the other druga not especially surprising result if metformin is a superior treatmentbut also outlived the nondiabetics studied as a comparison.

The FDA will not make its decision on whether metformin becomes the USs first antiaging drug until the study, dubbed Targeting Aging with Metformin (TAME for short), is complete. That wont happen for at least another five years. But, based on their June 2015 meeting with FDA officials, Barzilai and his colleagues are optimistic that the FDA is onboard. Within five minutes, we were all in complete agreement that this is plausible and a good idea, S. Jay Olshansky says.Thus far, getting the FDA excited about TAME has proven to be less challenging than convincing someone to pay for the study. Because metformin is a generic, there is no pot of gold waiting for investors at the end of the process. The TAME trial, which will enroll approximately 3,000 men and women between the ages of 65 and 79 at 14 centers across the country, is projected to cost $69 million. Barzilai is counting on the National Institutes of Health to cover a significant share of the cost, and he has been directly involved in lobbying the agency to back the study. Robert Hariri, cofounder and president of genetic sequencing pioneer Craig Venters Human Longevity Cellular Therapeutics, noted during the discussion that he takes metformin (he claims that it has improved his eyesight), as do Ray Kurzweil, of Singularity fame, and Ned David, cofounder of Silicon Valley startup Unity Biotechnology, which is developing its own antiaging drugs.

Use of brain-computer interface, virtual avatar could help people with gait disabilities

World Health and A4M have been following gait problems for years in terms of the way balance effect falling and the progression of aging. The role of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine is to support investigators in their goal of attenuation and/or reversing some of the aging process.

The study, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disease and Stroke, was published this week inScientific Reports. Senior author and researcher Jose Luis Contreras-Vidal is the professor of electrical and computer engineering at University of Houstons Noninvasive Brain-Machine Interface System Laboratory. He is also the site director of the BRAIN Center (Building Reliable Advances and Innovation in Neurotechnology), a National Science Foundation Industry/University Cooperative Research Center. His teams studies are the first to prove that using an interface between a proprietary computer program and a human brain depicting another person walking (avatar) may help balance patients improve gait and return to normal walking following spinal cord or other injury or cerebral vascular injury (stroke). He says that this is the first to involve humans, even though other studies on other primates have been perform previously.

Contreras-Vidal and researchers performed the study by using three trials with 80 healthy graduate students in the UH Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering to provide baseline data. The subjects walked on a treadmill while watching the avatar on a large screen in order to provide increased visual input while wearing a 64-channel EEG skull cap in addition to sensors on ankle, knee and hip joints. The non-invasive brain monitoring helped determine what parts of the brain are involved in walking. They then created an algorithm for a computer-brain interface.

His team wrote. "Voluntary control of movements is crucial for motor learning and physical rehabilitation," "Our results suggest the possible benefits of using a closed-loop EEG-based BCI-VR (brain-computer interface-virtual reality) system in inducing voluntary control of human gait." Up till this point, no one had researched whether a computer assisted algorithm and avatar might actually be effective in promoting better gait, balance and stability.

The subject was connected to the computer via the skull cap and sensors so that the interface caused the avatar on the screen to mimic the subject. The study reported increased activity in the posterior parietal cortex and the inferior parietal lobe, as well as the anterior cingulate cortex; all of which are involved in motor memory. Eventually the subject was actually able to control the avatar with their own brain although much less accurately. Future studies will likely be more accurate as software and interfaces improve. Contreras-Vidal said, "It's like learning to use a new tool or sport," he said. "You have to understand how the tool works. The brain needs time to learn that." The subject of Contreras-Vidal upcoming Ph.D. dissertation is the use of this protocol with actual patients. "The appeal of brain-machine interface is that it places the user at the center of the therapy," Contreras-Vidal said. "They have to be engaged, because they are in control."

Scientists Are One Step Closer To An Anti-Aging Drug – Civilized

Forget the Fountain of Youth; scientists are closer than ever to creating a safe and effective anti-aging drug, its been revealed.

Through a series of experiments on mice, researchers from Harvard Medical School and the University of New South Wales School of Medicine in Australia have discovered an essential clue as to how our cells repair damaged DNA. This is important because the bodys inability to mend DNA can result in age-related deterioration, claim the scientists.

They go on to say that when humans are young, they have great amounts of the DNA-repairing protein PARP1. As we age, however, another protein called DBC1 clings to it, rendering it impossible to finish its recon work. This makes it increasingly difficult for our systems to fix broken DNA.

In their study, the researchers fed old mice a molecule called NMN. The mice metabolized it into a signalling molecule called NAD, which squeezed in between the PARP1 and DBC1 proteins and pushed them apart. The DNA-repairing protein was then able to work effectively again, just like when the mice were younger.

This restored the DNA capacity of the old mouse back to a young mouse, and also to remove the DNA damage that accumulated in the tissue, said study author David Sinclair, Ph.D.

The scientists then exposed the mice to DNA-damaging radiation. The mice that were treated with the NMN molecule didnt show the usual effects of radiation, which include changes in white blood cell counts and hemoglobin levels.

While the scientists push that the NMN treatment has only been tested in mice and that the results may be different in people, they hope to begin human trials within six months.

This is the closest we are to a safe and effective anti-aging drug thats perhaps only three to five years away from being on the market if the trials go well, Sinclair said.

The drug could one day serve as a treatment for preventing DNA damage from aging, radiation and even chemotherapy.

‘Dr. 90210’ star accepting patients in Orlando – Orlando Sentinel

Miami-based plastic surgeon Dr. Alex de Souza is partnering with Dr. Robert Rey, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon and the star of reality TV show Dr. 90210, to start a practice here in Orlando.

The duo is starting small, performing their procedures at the outpatient surgery facility Endo-Surgical Center of Florida on North Dean Road. They hope to eventually establish a boutique practice here called World Plastic Surgery Center.

De Souza and Rey, who are part of a small community of Brazilian plastic surgeons in the United States, said starting a practice in Orlando made sense, because its a major tourist hub with a busy airport, and because compared to Miami and Beverly Hills, its more affordable.

We looked at different places, said Rey in an interview peppered with inspirational advice including Lift your head, Choose to be happy, and The enemy is the fridge.

Orlando is the most-visited city on earth. Its very heterogenous and is a centralized location, he said.

Brazilian tourists make up one of the top five international groups in Orlando, but de Souza said that wasnt the main deciding factor in choosing the area.

Dr. Harinath Sheela, a gastroenterologist and one of the partners at Endo-Surgical Center, said one of the reasons de Souza and Rey chose to work from his surgery center was because its close to the airport with access to state roads 408 and 417. An independent outpatient surgery center, Endo-Surgical was established here six years ago.

Curbing Calories Slows Aging – Anti Aging News

Research analysis finds that cutting calories works at a physiological level to slow biological aging.

The study was lead by Daniel Belsky, Ph.D. an assistant professor of medicine at the Duke University School of Medicine. Previous research has shown that calorie restriction hinders the aging process in mice, worms, and flies. The question is to what extent such restriction has on the biological aging process in human beings. Biological aging is best defined as the slow but progressive deterioration of the human body's systems over time. If the biological aging rate can be slowed through intervention, it might be possible to delay or prevent the onset of numerous age-related disabilities and diseases.

About the Analysis

Belsky and her team of researchers studied data available to the public from a trial known as CALERIE. The National Institute on Aging conducted this study involving 220 individuals. They were randomized for a calorie restriction of 25 percent or allowed to maintain their current dietary intake. The calorie restriction group was comprised of 145 people. Their calories were reduced by 12 percent across the two-year study. The other group, in which calories were not restricted, was comprised of 75 individuals. The research team studied data from both groups at the beginning of the study. Follow-ups took place at the one-year point as well as the two-year anniversary.

The Results

One method calculated the biological age for participants according to their chronological age as well as the biomarkers that gauge the function of the liver, kidneys, immune system, metabolic system, and cardiovascular system. Hemoglobin levels, systolic blood pressure, and cholesterol were also accounted for. At the beginning of the study, both groups had similar biological ages as determined by the measure described above. The average biological age of the participants was 37 while the average chronological age was 38.

Once the one-year follow-up point was reached, those in the restricted calorie group had an average biological age increase of 0.11 years. The participants who continued their normal dietary intake experienced an average biological age increase of 0.71 years at the one-year follow-up. The difference between these groups was statistically meaningful, showing that restricting calories really did deter the biological aging rate.

The research team also performed another analysis that quantified biological aging as the level of physiological deviation from a benchmark defined by young and healthy individuals from a distinct data set. At the beginning of the trial, the maintenance and calorie-restricted groups deviated the same level on average from the benchmark point. However, at the one-year and two-year follow-up points, the average deviation among the maintenance group stayed the same. The group in which calories were restricted gradually became more similar to the healthy and young benchmark reference point.

The findings were consistent with the mitigated aging researchers found in the group with restricted calories when the biological age calculation method was applied. Interventions to offset or control aging are at the center of medical research.

Study Importance

This was the first study to gauge whether the restriction of calories could mitigate measured biological aging in human beingsin a randomized setting. This study applied the measures of physiologic age described above and demonstrated their value as well as the apparent value provided by restricting calories to slow the aging process. The results suggest a template to develop and study therapies meant to copy the effects of restricting calories to ward off chronic diseases.

More than half of family doctors in Canada are still using manual devices, a dated technology that often leads to misdiagnosis.

A study by researchers at the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre (CRCHUM) reports that over half of the Canadian family doctors are still making use of manual devices to measure blood pressure, which is a dated technology. Using a manual device to measure blood pressure often leads to misdiagnosis. Approximately 20% of those receiving treatment for hypertension don't actually have it and do not need medication.

Automatic electronic devices, called oscillometric devices, are available and are recommended by the Guidelines of the Canadian Hypertension Education Program (CHEP) as preferable to manual measurement.

However, in the spring of 2016, the team that conducted the survey among the Canadian family doctors found that 52% of the 769 who responded stated that they made use of a manual tensiometer to measure patients' blood pressure, and only 43% used an automatic device.

The lead author of the study, Janusz Kaczorowski, is a medical sociologist, a CRCHUM researcher, and a professor in the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine.

Manual measurement is acceptable if it is done properly, but that is not always the case. Kaczorowski stated that clinicians should use automatic devices because they are more precise and take several measurements. Automated measurement has an advantage because it eliminates white-coat syndrome, which is an artificially high blood pressure reading that is a result of being in a doctor's office.

To take blood pressure properly, a 12- to 15-minute period is required with the patient being left alone in a room while the measurement is taken. That is difficult because the average visit to a family doctor lasts only 10 minutes.

Blood pressure is the pressure that the blood exerts on the walls of arteries. Measured in an artery in the arm, blood pressure has two measurements: systolic as the heart contracts and diastolic as the heart relaxes. Normal pressure has the systolic pressure at below 140 mmHg and the diastolic pressure at below 90 mmHg. Above those numbers, a person is said to have high blood pressure or hypertension.

In Canada, one of every five adults suffers from hypertension, which is the greatest global risk factor for disability and death. Healthcare costs due to hypertension were evaluated at over $13 billion in 2010. Kaczorowski says that if blood pressure was measured incorrectly, there are considerable financial implications as well as possible side effects, which could be avoided.

The CHEP Guidelines state that modification of health-related behaviors is an efficient way of treating and preventing high blood pressure and reducing the cardiovascular disease risk. It is possible to lower one's blood pressure with a healthy diet, reduced intake of sodium, regular physical activity, moderate consumption of alcohol, tobacco product avoidance, and stress management.

A 35-year-old overweight lady caused some commotion at the check-out counter of a supermarket when she tried to pay for a few bottles of antioxidants with a Food Stamps Debit Card. Antioxidants? Do they still exist? What happened to them?

"The fountain of youth is discovered," touted the media with great fanfare somewhere in the early 90's. Only, one daily dietary supplement would stop aging. A eureka moment made famous scientists, Rebeca Gerschman, Denham Harman and others, realize the importance of oxygen leaks deep down in tiny cell particles, mitochondria, as the destructive force, which causes aging and death.

Free radical (O and OH) were capable of damaging proteins, mutating DNA and initiate long, deadly chain reactions, ultimately creating a crescendo of destruction, culminating in an error catastrophe, that ultimately caused apoptosis or cell death.

If free radicals were bad, antioxidants were good. Supposedly, antioxidants reacted with free radicals, thus blocking adverse reactions. Antioxidants, heralded as a panacea for aging, instantly became the ultimate anti-aging remedy. Note: Many foods, including fruits, and vegetables contain antioxidants; and they are abundantly available as expensive dietary supplements in health food stores.

But then in the 1990s, irrefutable facts from experimental testing debunked the claims. The findings were clear. Antioxidants most certainly do not prolong life or prevent disease. Taking high dose antioxidant supplements carried a modest but consistent risk; you were more likely to die early. Bizarrely, pro-oxidants could extend the lifespan. In spite of these findings, fringe medicine continued to peddle the assumed benefits of antioxidants. Glossy magazines and cult books preached the false gospel of antioxidants, and the shelves of health food and drugstores remained abundantly stocked.

Studies have long shown that those on lower incomes spend a larger proportion of their incomes on food. (The Food Standards Agency Low Income Diet and Nutrition Survey (LIDNS), 2007).

It is even worse; lower income groups spend disproportionate amounts of money on heath food store supplements. That is why it hurts to see customers pay for totally worthless expensive food supplements with Food Stamp Debit cards.

Please alarm those in your circle that the antioxidants fountain of youth is a real fairytale.

New Drugs That Could Help Us Live Longer – Healthline

Were living longer these days, but that hasnt stopped newer branches of medicine from trying to enhance and further extend our lifespans.

Researchers in longevity medicine and biogerontology are studying drugs and compounds that can prevent and reverse aging on the cellular level.

Over the past few years, public interest in longevity issues has grown, but that interest is mostly in health-extending therapies, not simply life-extending therapies. Most people are interested in living longer, but only if they can also be healthier longer, Sonia Arrison, author of 100 Plus: How the Coming Age of Longevity Will Change Everything, From Careers and Relationships to Family and Faith, and founder of Singularity University in California, told Healthline.

While many people are focused on lifestyle changes, the addition of drugs rapamycin and metformin are two that Arrison mentioned gives humans more options to extend their lives as well as the quality of their lives.

Compared with preventative drugs such as statins to avoid having a heart attack, anti-aging drugs fight multiple diseases at once instead of focusing on one ailment, Arrison added.

A person who goes by the name Reason, a technologist and author on FightAging.org, which highlights health- and longevity-enhancing medical technologies, told Healthline that the drugs are targeting a wide range of age-related ailments and diseases.

All age-related diseases are age-related because they are caused by the processes of aging, which is to say an accumulation of damage in cells and tissues, Reason wrote in an email.

The field of geroprotection involves understanding cell senescence, which is when cells stop dividing.

When senescent cells no longer divide, they stop functioning, so organ health deteriorates. Cell senescence also causes the release of proinflammatory cytokines, which damage tissues.

This arena involves the use of geroprotectors, which are compounds that can stop or reverse cellular aging, and senolytics, which are compounds that can pinpoint and destroy senescent cells.

This is why researchers are looking into geroprotectors and senolytics, which requires long spans of time to understand.

In essence, todays researchers may never see the outcomes of the research theyve started because it can take decades to study. Nevertheless, scientists continue to try to understand these compounds and how they can alter our cells.

Researchers are also looking into our cells telomeres, which are short segments of DNA in our chromosomes that protect cells from wear and tear that comes with aging. As cells divide, they can shorten and no longer protect the chromosome or cell.

Lengthening them is the focus of recent research. Last year, a BGRF study was able to lengthen human telomeres.

A recent report in the journal Cell detailed how peptides were able to boost the life span of mice. The study examined how cell therapy could reverse poor age-related kidney function, fur loss, and frailty in mice.

Scientists are looking into whether or not the approach can also prolong the life span of mice. Human safety studies are in the works.

Reason said there are two schools of thought when exploring extending life through genetic pathways.

One approach is to alter cellular metabolism and make cells age more slowly, but the work is difficult and expensive. The other is to fix old tissue because we understand how it compares with young tissue.

The Human Aging Genomic Resources (HAGR) website recently released DrugAge, a database of lifespan-extending drugs and compounds.

It includes 418 compounds that were recorded from studies on 27 different model organisms.

HAGR already operates the GenAge database of age and longevity-related genes in humans and model organisms. They also operate AnAge, which has aging and longevity records of more than 4,000 species, the GenDR database of genes associated with the life-extending effects of dietary restriction, and LongevityMap, which includes more than 2,000 human gene and genetic variations linked to longevity.

DrugAge incorporates earlier efforts by Biogerontology Research Foundation (BGRF) scientists, who produced Geroprotectors.org. Right now, its the largest database of its kind.

According to the research teams from BGRF and the University of Liverpool, pharmaceuticals have not targeted most age-related pathways. The research is only focused on a small number of pathways that are currently known.

The goal behind the database is to pave the way for discovery of new life span-extending and health span-extending compounds.

I am confident that it [DrugAge] will gain widespread use in the aging research community, and represents a significant milestone along the way to the coming paradigm shift in modern healthcare away from single disease treatment and toward geroprotective multi-disease prevention, Dmitry Kaminskiy, managing trustee of BGRF, said in a statement.

Franco Cortese, deputy director and trustee of BGRF, said in a statement the database will be extremely valuable for biogerontologists. The BGRF did not respond to Healthlines request for comment.

Already, researchers are using the data to identify trends and develop a better understanding of the comparative effects of geroprotectors on organisms.

Arrison is excited when she sees people teaming up globally to battle human disease and decline something that the DrugAge team is hoping to do with their database.

The more knowledge the health community can get, the better. The wonderful thing about the internet is that knowledge gets distributed faster, making the quest for cures that much quicker, Arrison added.
