A Futuristic CGI Short Film HD: "Consumed" from Andreas Wannerstedt – Video

A Futuristic CGI Short Film HD: "Consumed" from Andreas Wannerstedt
An intriguing futuristic short film from the talented Andreas Wannerstedt! Consumed is a 3D short film about a not so distant future, where extreme overpopulation has become a global crises. The population growth has reached a critical tipping point and there #39;s food and water shortages all around the world. The story revolves around a "Food Replicator", or a so called molecular assembler, a device that can rearrange subatomic particles and guide chemical reactions with atomic precision. In an attempt to prevent mass starvation, this device is used to synthesize nutritions with the ability to self-replicate. But during the initial tests something goes wrong and out-of-control self-replicating compounds starts to spread, consuming all matter while building more copies of them selves. This is very similar to a hypothetical end-of-the-world scenario called "Grey goo", a term coined by molecular nanotechnology pioneer Eric Drexler back in 1986. He illustrates exponential growth and the dangers of self-replication is his book "Engines of Creation": "Imagine a replicator floating in a bottle of chemicals, making copies of itself...the first replicator assembles a copy in one thousand seconds, the two replicators then build two more in the next thousand seconds, the four build another four, and the eight build another eight. At the end of ten hours, there are not thirty-six new replicators, but over 68 billion. In less than a day, they would weigh a ton; in less than two days ...From:TheCGBroViews:218 26ratingsTime:02:40More inFilm Animation

Magnetic Polymer Nanofibers
North Penn High School nanotechnology research seniors, Alex H. and Matt M. of the research team, McNetics, successfully created a magnetic nanofabric today in class. This video shows the results of their first attempt at embedding FeO3 into electrospun nanofibers. Future experiments will look into modifying the concentration of the FeO3, utilizing other types of polymers for various environmental applications, fiber strength, conductivity and the potential benefits of hydrophobic magnetic nanofibers.From:NorthPennNanoTechViews:0 0ratingsTime:00:18More inScience Technology

Frank Koppens: Manipulating light with graphene
With potential uses from photovoltaics to integrated optical circuits, new discoveries can be quickly applied. spie.org - SPIE Optics and Photonics Symposium Frank Koppens is Assistant Professor and Nano-optoelectronics group leader at the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Barcelona, Spain. He obtained his PhD in experimental nanoscience and quantum computation at the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience, Delft University (Cum Laude, 2007), in the Netherlands. His PhD work includes several breakthroughs on coherent control of single spins in semiconductor quantum dots. As an IQSE postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University he worked on quantum plasmonics with single quantum dots and diamond color centers, with a major breakthrough on the electrical detection surface plasmon polaritons and single plasmon sources. In August 2010, he became a group leader at ICFO. Koppens is author of 28 refereed papers (H-index 18). He specializes in graphene opto-electronics and nano-photonics, and reported the first real-space images of propagating and gate-tunable optical plasmons in graphene. Koppens received the prestigious Huygens award for his work on quantum information processing and nanotechnology. Frank Koppens wasawarded a European Research Council Starting Grant in 2012 to pursue his project "Carbon Light". The project aims to bridge the unique nano-optical and nano-electronic properties of graphene to capture and manipulate light at extremely small scales and to reveal the ...From:SPIETVViews:0 0ratingsTime:07:10More inScience Technology

On November 27th, 2012, StarTalk Live brought a little science to the world of dollars and cents at the Business Insider IGNITION conference. Now you #39;re invited to hear astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, comic co-host Eugene Mirman and guest futurists Jason Silva and Melissa Sterry answer questions that lie at the intersection of technology, human biology and urban planning. Will bio-ware and nanotechnology allow humans to reprogram our biology? Can smart-materials, adaptive structures and sensor nets help city planners and policy makers create smart cities that adapt to environmental change the way forests do? Are we really approaching a "technological singularity" of emerging super-intelligence beyond which events cannot be predicted -- and has humanity actually experienced one before?
