(WKBN) Holiday planning, pandemic stresses and missing family might be draining for some this year.

Experts say that can lead to eating-related issues.

Food is a coping mechanism. Food helps us deal with stress, whether we are restricting our food or whether we are overeating, said Michelle Cross, of the Eating Recovery Center.

Whether youve battled with weight issues in the past or not, holidays always bring an extra level of stress.

Acknowledging the emotions and understanding theyre here, theyre present, theyre not going away by stuffing them down with the food, said public speaker Susie Tucker.

Medical experts also warn that cases of acid reflux and heartburn are common this time of year. They say if you overeat, your body has ways of signaling that its time to slow down.

Symptoms include bloating, regurgitation of food and nausea.

This means regular exercise, cardiovascular exercise, aerobic exercise and really watching what you eat and knowing what a heart-healthy diet is and using those things to help you mitigate your risk factors, said Cardiologist Dr. Chris Haddad.

Researchers at George Washington University say you dont have to hit the gym to become more physically active. Even small changes can make a big difference.

Walking about, gardening, housework, walking a pet, climbing stairs, parking the car a little bit further away, said Dr. Loretta DiPietro, professor of Exercise Science at George Washington University.Above all, experts say knowing your risk factors and being in touch with your doctor is most important.

Millennials, also known as the avocado toast generation, are more likely to embrace plant-based foods than Baby Boomers, according to a newpoll from Eat Just. The survey asked 1,000 millennials and 1,000 boomers whether they would be likely to embrace new ways of making traditional holiday foods and found that while boomers are more likely stuck in their ways, 81 percent of millennials are open to change, including making over their traditional foods with plant-based ingredients.

The poll found that 68 percent of baby boomers say they prefer to follow traditions and 39 percent like to stick closely to traditions when it comes to the holiday. Meanwhile, millennialssaid they are more likely to remake these traditions in a healthier way. Millennials are looking to incorporate plant-based dishesinto their holiday meals,the survey found,and are eager to bring their interest in healthier dishes totheir holiday tables.

The survey, conducted by Eat JUST, Inc. found that two-thirds of Millennials said they would be making their family traditions over as plant-based this year. 4 ways to stay fit and stress less during the holidays – The Philadelphia Tribune

As the holiday season ramps up, daily schedules can easily fill with the demands of the season, like shopping, cooking, wrapping and planning. To avoid overload, it's all too easy to shift self-care priorities like regular exercise to the bottom of the list. Skipping workouts, however, can actually make it more difficult for our bodies and minds to deal with added holiday stressors.

Instead of letting exercise slide, taking a less-is-more approach to working out will enable you to avoid schedule overload without sacrificing your health. By training smarter, not longer, you can increase time available for holiday to-dos while still decreasing the impact of seasonal treats on the waistline. This plan will also help reduce stress and safeguard your overall well-being.

Below, I outline four strategies to help you stay fit during the holiday season.

Use habit stacking to add more daily exercise

One of the best ways to train smarter, not harder, in this busy time of year is to ensure you're exercising consistently at least a few minutes every day by making it a habit. And one of the most effective ways to create a daily habit that sticks is to stack it on an existing one.

Consider some of common everyday habits that are so ingrained in your routine, you automatically do them, such as brushing your teeth, showering and making your bed. By adding an exercise right before, during or directly after one of those habits, it's easier to make it stick in your daily routine. For example, for nearly eight years now, I've been doing 50 body-weight squats or two-minute wall sits while I brush my teeth.

In a blog post on Clear's website, he explains why "synaptic pruning" in our brains supports habit stacking. Connections (synapses) between neurons in our brains, he wrote, decrease when not used and strengthen when used frequently. Consequently, existing habits have stronger synaptic connections that we can leverage through habit stacking to create new habits.

That's why my squat habit while toothbrushing was so easy to start and maintain. After reading Clear's blog, I also added 10 push-ups before showering to my daily routine -- and I formed that habit easily as well!

What daily habits could you stack with different forms of exercise?

Feel free to use mine or come up with your own. Maybe 30 jumping jacks before morning coffee? Or 20 alternating step-back lunges right after putting on your shoes? Choose what feels right for you to slot into your routine.

Multitask your mobile screen time

Although spending time on your smartphone might seem like a habit, it's usually more of a time waster that happens sporadically throughout the day rather than a natural part of a daily routine. And leading up to the holidays, many people experience an increase in mobile screen time. Whether people are online shopping, answering texts or scrolling social media to keep up with friends' holiday plans, many folks inevitably spend a significant chunk of the day looking down at their phones.

What if you could make even a fraction of that time better for your health? And maybe even dissuade yourself from spending so much time looking at your phone? You can by incorporating posture-improving, core and leg-strengthening wall sits in your smartphone time.

By design, wall sits are challenging. So, even though they're good for you, you aren't going to want to hold them for very long or do very many sets. So if you pair them with your smartphone time, you'll likely reduce your scrolling minutes just to avoid them -- which isn't a bad thing for your mental health.

Stand with your head and back flat against a wall and your feet hip-distance apart.

Step your feet forward about 18 to 24 inches as you slide down the wall into a squat position where your knees align with your hips and thighs are parallel to the floor (see top photo).

If keeping your thighs parallel to the floor is too tough to maintain, only slide down the wall until you feel a challenging muscular effort you can sustain for at least 30 seconds. As you get stronger, you'll be able to go deeper.

Engage your core as you continue pressing your back into the wall.

Try to hold this position for at least 30 seconds at a time or as long as you can comfortably while continuing your mobile tasks.

Don't bend your neck to look down at your phone! Give your "text neck" a break and your posture a boost by keeping the back of your head against the wall while holding your phone up to meet your gaze.

In between wall sits, stand upright, take a few deep breaths and repeat.

Squeeze in a 4-minute high-intensity workout

So, if you're up to the challenge of maintaining periods of elevated heart rate alternated with short recovery periods, four-minute Tabata-style HIIT workouts could be your time-efficient recipe for staying fit over the holidays.

Tabata drills, created by Japanese scientist Izumi Tabata, consist of the same exercise performed through eight rounds of 20 seconds of activity and 10 seconds of rest for a total of four minutes. You can use almost any body-weight exercise, but I recommend selecting one that requires a total-body effort and fits your current fitness level and preference.

For instance, mountain climbers and jumping jacks are two very different, yet effective, total-body exercises. Because I prefer a more intense, core-oriented challenge with this drill, I use mountain climbers.

How to perform mountain climbers Tabata style:

Set your phone's timer for four minutes.

Begin in a plank position with your core engaged and back flat.

Place your phone on the floor in front of you, so you can easily see and reach it.

Hit start on your time and begin doing mountain climbers, by alternating bringing each knee up to your chest, then back to plank position, at a pace you can sustain throughout the drill.

When the timer hits the 3:40 mark, rest for 10 seconds and restart at the 3:30 mark.

Rest again at 3:10 and begin again at 3:00.

Repeat through all four minutes.

Make time to de-stress and recover

Despite all their splendor, the holidays take a toll on both our mental and physical health. Family demands like shopping and cooking and indulgences such as increased intake of high-fat, high-sugar treats and alcohol consumption deliver stressors of all types. And the shorter, darker days of winter make it even harder on some.

To recover from this onslaught of stress, it's important to get adequate sleep and take intentional mental and physical energy breaks. Prioritizing recovery is important all the time but especially during the holidays. Consequently, this is one area where less is not more more is more.

Get all the sleep you need: Your body needs sleep to repair and replenish itself, so don't skimp on it in your schedule. If you're having trouble falling or staying asleep, try my pre-bedtime six-minute routine based on programs I use with pro-athlete clients.

Feel like you need a nap? You probably do! A 15- or 25-minute nap can provide a much-needed energy boost.

Take breaks to recharge: It's important to unplug at least once a day. That means taking at least a few minutes away from all your tasks -- and yes, your phone -- to revitalize your mind and body. You can do this by practicing a mindfulness meditation or breathing exercise, taking a walk or simply relaxing in a comfortable position, like this legs-up-the-wall pose.

Staying fit over the holidays doesn't have to mean depriving yourself of all the season's treats; it just requires a more strategic approach to fitness. And following the tips above will create healthy lifestyle changes that will continue to serve you long after the holidays pass.

May you live in interesting times. Today seems the epitome of this Chinese curse. Ours is the time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The world we live in is partially like the old days and partly an uncertain Brave New World.

There is no uniform experience. Life goes on pretty much as normal for some. For many, a challenging and difficult new normal has evolved. And, for a few, it comes to a catastrophic end. For the vast majority, the biggest impact has been the government-mandated restrictions.

Unfortunately, it is not even clear what the truth about the disease really is. Much of the public response is driven by the media and its need to fill the airways 24/7. There is nothing like a crisis to capture our attention (and viewers).

Online sources and social media fuel dire (and sometimes crackpot) opinions as well. Collectively they have turned the pandemic into a panic.

We are told to follow the science, but what does that mean? What precisely should we do in response to whatever component of science we follow?

For example, we know that COVID-19 is virulent. For at-risk populations, and sadly some healthy people, it is deadly. However, the same can be said about the annual flu outbreak, particularly in years where the vaccine misses the target. Life is always full of risk, and we should view this in the same manner we do every choice we make. I could get in a fatal car crash on the way to the grocery store, yet I accept that possible fate every day. This is no different; only the probabilities change. It is a question of determining the acceptable magnitude of risk, not eliminating it.

We must recognize that much of the science is based on probability and modeling. Early estimates stated that the overall mortality rate was approximately 3.4%; subsequently, that figure has been lowered to below 1% (across all groups). Those figures are misleading. The mortality rate for patients over 80 is more than 13% (that figure is staggering if understandable). However, it is far lower among healthy younger people, approximately 0.15% for those in their 30s.

These and other factors (impact of side effects, transmission mechanisms, etc.) fluctuate almost daily as we learn more about the pathology of the disease. On which statistics are we to base our policy? How do you state emphatically that one particular course of action is valid and efficacious for all groups and across all geography?

The short (and honest) answer is that you cant. The real question for us today is, How will we live our lives?

At one extreme, we can choose to be scared by the science (as the media would have us do). We can live in fear. We can shut down business and hope that massive federal expenditures will solve the problem. We can destroy the well-being of thousands of our citizens, leaving them without meaning in their lives. We can pretend that such actions will not come home to roost in the future. I believe those risks are every bit as relevant and potentially dangerous as denying the nature of the disease and pretending that there is no problem, a path that will inevitably lead to unnecessary death and tragedy.

Furthermore, following the rules creates no guarantee. In todays world, you can quarantine, mask up, wash your hands frequently, and still get infected. Likewise, you can live a healthy lifestyle, have no underlying conditions, and still become deathly ill.

But there are clear rational actions. We should continue to pursue vaccines and aggressively disseminate them when they are available (again accepting the risks involved with side effects). We should do a better job of protecting at-risk populations (e.g., provide full protective equipment for workers in nursing homes). We can also take prudent precautions (wearing a mask, doing extra cleaning and sterilizing, maintaining separation, etc.). These are not onerous and appear to have a positive impact. Why would we not do this?

However, I have a greater fear for the future if we shutter our society and crash the economy. The risk of massive dependence on government largess is real. We have seen the result of such conditions on the diverse underclass from minority urban neighborhoods to the former coal communities in Appalachia. Do we really want to expand that experience to consume others who were productive members of society, consigning them to the depressive effects of perpetual subservience to a dysfunctional government?

We are better than that. We do not retreat in the face of adversity. We do not lock our doors and whimper in the night as the tide of adversity swallows us up. We have never capitulated because the road ahead was hard, full of risk, or plagued with danger. We are willing to sacrifice for the greater good of our country.

This is what it means to be American at least that is who we used to be.

CAIRO: Any Cairene with a real love for Lebanese pastries can tell you how tough it is to find a freshly baked manousheh made the authentic Lebanese way here in Cairo.

This is precisely why fans of this Lebanese breakfast pizza rejoiced when Beiruts very own the Lebanese Bakery (TLB) finally opened in Egypts capital city last September.

Located in the Maadi neighborhood, the branch like all TLB outlets was founded with the mission to pay homage to the manousheh, to subtly enhance and modernize traditional recipes with creativity and attention to every bite, according to TLBs website. The bakerys aim remains to serve a delicious take on traditional manousheh and mouajjanet the quintessential everyday Lebanese food.

The options on the manousheh section of the menu include From the Garden, Cheese, Meat, and All Day Breakfast. TLB serves a selection of manoushehs with free-range eggs cooked sunny-side-up or paired with kashkawan cheese, sujuk, awarma or shakshuka sauce. There is also a section of salads, sides and kaak, and a vast selection of freshly baked mouajjanet and sweets. We were also impressed to find that you can select your own dough for your manousheh, with the options of whole wheat or multigrain. Besides the items on its well-curated menu, the bakery also sells its own condiments including wild cucumber pickles, cocktail pickles and an eggplant makdous (pickled eggplant).

We visited the bakery on a cool Friday morning. It is located in a beautiful two-story building with both indoor and outdoor seating areas. We grabbed a cozy table outside to enjoy the November sun.

We selected a labna wa joz side, ras asfour manousheh, zaatar and akkawi cheese manousheh, and an assortment of mouajjanet.

The food arrived promptly, and was served with a proper cappuccino (one of the best coffees Ive had in Cairo and reason enough in itself to drop by for breakfast).

First to our table was labneh wa joz a magnificent labneh, walnut and black olive side dish served with freshly baked bread. The tanginess of the labneh was brought out by the bitter taste of the olives, but it was the choice to include crunchy chopped walnuts that really elevated this dish, which could easily suffice as a breakfast item on its own.

Next up was the zaatar and akkawi cheese manousheh (aka nes-nes or half-and-half); a ras asfour manousheh composed of diced beef, rocket leaves and pomegranate molasses and topped with fresh pomegranate; and finally, a hot-out-the-oven selection of mouajjanet.

The zaatar and akkawi cheese manousheh transported us back to our Beirut foodie trips the sourness of the zaatar perfectly complemented by the saltiness of the akkawi cheese, with the manousheh crust striking just the right balance between thin and fluffy.

As delicious as that was, however, our manousheh-of-the-year contender was the delicious ras asfour manousheh. From the juiciness of the beef and the hint of pungent sweetness created by the pomegranate molasses to the crunchiness of the rocket and pomegranate, this was the highlight of the meal.

The mouajjanet selection was a hit too both in terms of overall taste and baking quality. We sampled the thyme mouajjanet, spinach fatayer, cheese mini-pizzas, and small sfeehas. Straight out of the oven with just the right amount of filling, the mouajjanet complemented this hearty Lebanese breakfast perfectly.

Sadly though, we had no room left for any of TLBs sweet pastries. The sweet manoushehs carob molasses and tahini; Nutella; or Halawa with strawberry and pistachios looked superb and well definitely go back to try them some other time.

Cairo-based Manousheh fans who cant make the trip out to Maadi can request delivery. Theres also a scheduled pick-up option if youre in a hurry.

Personally though, wed highly recommend visiting the bakery on an early morning and enjoying your manoushehs in the cool breeze.

Why Do Black and Latino Neighborhoods Have Higher Rates of Alzheimer’s? – Being Patient

December 9th, 2020Amid the growing burden of Alzheimers in the U.S., researchers aim to better understand the relationship between the disease and the places people live.

Experts estimate that nearly 40 percent of the more than eight million Americans living with Alzheimers and related dementias will be Latino or Black by 2030. Where people live matters, researchers say, and delving into the disparities of risk factors and prevalence of dementia across neighborhoods and counties especially for communities of color is key to identifying gaps in research, public health policies and services.

According to a 2020 report by UsAgainstAlzheimers and the Urban Institute, deep social, geographic, and health inequities exist between counties where people of color have the highest rates of Alzheimers and related dementias, and counties where those rates are the lowest. Studying these inequities may lead to clues about how to decrease Alzheimers risk, and help address the diseases disproportionate burden on people of color.

Stipica Mudrazija, the lead author of the report and senior research associate at the Urban Institute said while researchers in the field have gained a more comprehensive understanding of the medical science behind Alzheimers and related dementias, much less is known about the socioeconomic factors and geographic disparities linked to the disease.

Research on Alzheimers and related dementias has indeed made great strides in increasing understanding of the causes and origins of the disease, including genetic factors in recent years, Mudrazija said during a virtual conference. Yet, there has been significantly less research on the impact of place and the social determinants of health that may shape the risk of Alzheimers disease and related dementias.

To address this gap in research, the authors of the report analyzed 2016 Medicare data and identified the top 25 counties in the U.S. with the highest and lowest prevalence of Alzheimers and related dementias among Black, Latino and non-Latino white populations. Then, they compared the counties demographics, health and socioeconomic profiles to identify trends and risk factors.The team found that, in the counties where Blacks and Latinos had the highest rates of dementia, there was a striking pattern: These counties also had lower levels of education, lower household incomes, residents had less access to parks and recreational facilities to exercise, and residents self-reported higher rates of physical and mental distress.

One factor that seems to be universally important, Mudrazija said, was the difference in education.

We see across all racial and ethnic groups that counties with the lowest prevalence [of dementia] tend to have a much higher level of education than the counties with highest prevalence, he said, with the difference being somewhat higher for Latinos and non-Latino Blacks than non-Latino whites.

The report revealed that only 16 percent of adults have a bachelors degree in counties with the highest prevalence among Blacks, the researchers wrote, compared to twice that in counties at the other end of the spectrum. Only 19 percent of adults have a bachelors degree in counties with the highest prevalence among Latinos, compared to 27 percent of adults in counties with the lowest prevalence.

According to William Vega, an author of the report and the former executive director of Roybal Institute on Aging at University of Southern California, education can build peoples cognitive reserves, helping their brains develop capacity to resist dementia and manage its progression. Education is also linked to peoples socioeconomic status and health behaviors such as diet, which are in turn associated with Alzheimers and related dementias.

Jason Resendez, an author of the study and head of the LatinosAgainstAlzheimers coalition, who also spoke at the conference, added that the report highlights the disproportionate burden people of color are bearing in the fight against Alzheimers.

This report finds that deep social inequities exist in counties most impacted by Alzheimers disease among Latinos and Blacks, he said, and that, in turn, demonstrates the impact of place in determining our conditions and ability to live a healthy lifestyle.

Experts stress that living a healthy lifestyle is critical to managing risk of developing Alzheimers and related dementias. A recent report by the Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, intervention, and care, shows that physical inactivity, depression and social isolation in old age and nine other factors across the lifespan may delay or prevent 40 percent of dementia cases worldwide.

Many of these risk factors are directly shaped by place, including education, social isolation, physical inactivity, and air pollution, researchers of the report by UsAgainstAlzheimers and Urban Institute wrote. These same factors impact communities of color and low resourced communities disproportionately, meaning that Alzheimers risk-reduction opportunities could be even greater within those populations if these risk factors and social determinants of health are addressed equitably and urgently.

To address these disparities, UsAgainstAlzheimers recently announced the creation of the Center for Brain Health Equity, collaborating with nursing professionals and community-based organizations to develop public health strategies for communities of color, improving data collection and diversifying the research pipeline.

We know the social determinants of health can act as barriers to health care access and treatment, said Resendez, who is also the executive director of the Center for Brain Health Equity. Thats why documenting trends in the social determinants in these highly impacted counties is important as health systems and governments develop programs to support communities that are hard hit by Alzheimers.

Consumers Flock to Positive Short-Form Videos in Wake of COVID-19 Outbreak, According to New Research from TheSoul Publishing – PRNewswire

Most expect this trend to continue, with 78% of consumers agreeing that fun and positive online video content will become an even more important and popular source of entertainment in the future.

Digital Distraction:Since lockdown restrictions were set in place, statistics show that more than two-thirds of consumers in the U.S. (69%) are spending between 30 minutes to three hours watching short online video content.

Gen Z Loves to Binge: Gen Z respondents are big short-form video bingers, with 32% of respondents stating they watch 2 hours or more on a daily basis. Comedy was found to be their favorite type of short-form content (62%), which correlates with the 32% of respondents in this age category stating they view positive online videos to improve their mood.

Finding Happiness with New Hobbies: As restrictions limit consumers' dining and entertainment options, 86% of Americans have watched a YouTube, Facebook, Instagram or TikTok video for home project inspiration, crafting ideas, DIY activities, and/or cooking. Cooking/baking (44%) and DIY/crafting (41%) ranked among the top categories of consumed content viewers are watching as opposed to six months ago.

Music is a Universal Escape:59% of respondents selected music and music videos as one of their favorite types of short-form content, with comedy-related content following closely behind (59%). These findings illustrate the link between new habits in video consumption with the lack of opportunity for in-person experiences (i.e. concerts, festivals, etc.).

Bigger Screens Could Make a Comeback:More than half of Americans (56%) believe that they will primarily be watching short online video content (shorter than 10 min) on their phones in 2021. 18% believe they will primarily use their computer, 11% say a tablet, and 7% plan to watch mostly on a television. Less likely are smartwatches (2%), glasses (2%) or VR headset (2%). However, trends may be shifting with mobile phones in terms of time spent watching short-form content on a particular screen, with 63% of Americans watching via phone now versus 56% of the population that expects to be using this medium in the future.

Online Video "Shareability" has Little to do with Length: A mere 8% of Americans said that an online video being short is the most important indicator of its shareability. Topping the list at 38%, the largest amount of American consumers believe that a video being interesting makes it most shareable. This is followed by the content being funny (21%), relatable (18%) or helpful (12%).

Don’t Just Sit There: A Little Exercise Makes Up for a Full Day of Sitting – Everyday Health

It may seem harmless, but sitting for long periods of time can take years off your life. Yet a little physical activity can make a life-saving difference.

Researchers have found a direct relationship between excessive sedentary time and an early death. Between stay-at-home behaviors compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic and with holiday season upon us, individuals run the risk of becoming more inactive as major feasting and relaxation take over.

The good news: A new study published in theBritish Journal of Sports Medicine has found that a short amount of exercise each day can offset those harmful effects.

In a meta-analysis of nine previous investigations involving more than 44,000 middle-aged and older men and women (who recorded their physical activity with fitness trackers), scientists discovered that 30 to 40 minutes per day of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity could counteract the negative health effects of sitting still for 10 hours.

Those with low physical activity had a higher risk of premature death, with the greatest risk of death occurring in those with the highest sedentary time, the authors concluded.

The researchers noted that even just standing could help to some degree.

The results aligned with recommendations from the American Heart Association and other health organizations advising adults to get at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensityaerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous aerobic activity, or a combination of both, according to the scientists.

The World Health Organization (WHO) also recently published similar guidelines in the British Journal of Sports Medicine recommending 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous intensity physical activity every week.

Research from the American Heart Association suggests that exercise may be more important during the holiday season as deaths from heart attacks peak during December and January, possibly due to factors including changes in diet and alcohol consumption and stress.

Scientists have found that exercise can help cancel out some of the negative health effects of alcohol and reduce stress.

For many of us, the pandemic work-from-home reality has meant more time than ever sitting immobile staring at the computer, and less motivation to get up and move, says Sarah Samaan, MD, a cardiologist with Baylor Scott & White Legacy Heart Center in Plano, Texas, who was not involved in the study. Unfortunately, the more sedentary your lifestyle, the higher risk you have of premature death from heart disease and other conditions.

Dr. Samaan, who is also the author of The DASH Diet for Dummies, recognizes that many people find the idea of beginning an exercise program to be intimidating. But she stresses that people can get moving without following a standard workout regimen.

Activities such as brisk walking, biking, or gardening may substantially offset the harmful effects of our modern-day lifestyle, she says. You don't need a gym to get moving. You can even do it inside the comfort and safety of your own home.

Samaan adds that the holidays tend to be a time for rest and relaxation, but they also can be a great opportunity to reset your health habits.

Committing to a healthy lifestyle is a positive and uplifting way to move into the New Year, she says.

Incentives work to keep people healthy, and are cheaper than treatment – The Straits Times

SINGAPORE - The government, and insurance companies that pay the hospital bills, are trying every which way to keep people here healthier.

Life expectancy in Singapore is one of the longest in the world, and the people here enjoy the most number of healthy years in the world at 73.9 years in 2019 - beating the Japanese who were second with 73.3 years of good health.

This is largely due to three main factors - a strong healthcare system to provide good medical care to all who need it, in a timely manner; robust immunisation programme to protect against many preventable diseases; and people following a healthy lifestyle that reduces their risk of serious illness.

Singapore has an accessible and affordable public health network, with heavy government subsidies that ensure no citizen is denied healthcare for the lack of money.

The national immunisation schedule here recommends that all children be protected against 10 diseases, with some like diphtheria and measles being compulsory. Most are free.

The Ministry of Health (MOH) has also introduced, just this month, subsidies for adult immunisation. This will hopefully reduce the number of people getting serious illnesses like meningitis and pneumonia.

But the third factor has to come from people themselves. They need to exercise regularly and avoid eating unhealthy food, or at least, not eat them too frequently.

Most are aware that regular exercise is extremely helpful in keeping them in good health. They know it reduces obesity, the risk of heart diseases and diabetes, medical conditions which result in significant insurance claims.

Mr Dennis Tan, who heads Prudential Singapore, which provides MediShield Life Integrated Plans to many people here, said the top three causes of claims are heart problems, stroke and kidney treatments. In Singapore, the majority of kidney failure is due to uncontrolled diabetes.

Regular exercise could reduce the risk for all three. But not everyone who knows that, actually makes the effort to exercise.

The Health Promotion Board (HPB) has over the years stressed the importance of exercise. The Board's National Steps Challenge, has seen the number of participants grow, from 156,000 in 2015 when it was launched to 913,000 in the fifth session that ended earlier this year.

The Board dangles incentives for those who sign up. They include a free steps tracker for those who do not have one as well as prizes like air tickets for teams and individuals. There are also vouchers for those who fulfil the required number of daily steps.

Mr Zee Yoong Kang, HPB's chief executive officer, sees nothing wrong in giving people incentives to exercise.

But he added: "I don't think people do it for money. I think it's the thrill of getting that voucher as a recognition."

That's because "to earn $35 in our steps challenge programme, you have to walk 960 kilometres, and that's all the way from Singapore to Thailand," he said.

The annual event involves a series of challenges with participants securing a $5 or $10 voucher for clearing a level.

While some people do manage to earn every single voucher offered, there are also others who do not claim them after clearing a level.

About a third of participants would claim the vouchers within a month of qualifying for them, while 7 per cent do not bother at all.

Anything that can get more people exercising regularly is good. While about half a million participants may not care much about the vouchers, there are about 300,000 people who had likely exercised more to get them.

It is far cheaper to provide a little incentive for people to stay healthy, than to treat them for a medical condition that could have been prevented.

Professor Tan Chorh Chuan executive director of the MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation said the rewards can be seen "as encouragement, support, to assist people in making the behavioural change".

Such encouragement is important, which is why Prudential introduced its Pulse App this year. It already has 120,000 users.

The App allows people to check their health status as well as access a tele-consultation should they think they have a problem. It was launched during the circuit breaker period, when most people stayed home as far as possible.

There are also fun elements in the App, like a wrinkle-mirror, to encourage people to lead healthy lifestyles.

For health insurers like Prudential, spending money to get people to stay fit would mean healthier policy holders, which is good for the bottom line.

Prof Tan said more than a third of serious illness are actually preventable. This means, if we all do our part, we should be able to enjoy even more years in good health in our increasingly long lifetimes.

Tell us about your journey with food. When did you fall in love with food, cooking and eating clean?

When I started cooking, I just loved knowing exactly what I was putting in my food, good or bad, understanding how flavours come together, how texture is created and eventually how that food becomes information for your body. Telling it how to feel (tired, bloated, energised, inspired) and how to perform.

How can food affect our disposition?

I hear food is fuel all the time and while thats true, it doesnt paint the whole picture. Yes, food gives us energy, but it also gives us information. It tells your body what to feel, how to move and eventually can affect it positively or negatively in the long run. Think about it, its the most intimate thing you can do, to put something in your body and ingest it, it doesnt get more personal than that.

How important is food vs exercise in the equation for being fit and healthy?

People say that abs are made in the kitchen and that is 100 per cent true. If abs are your goal, food is the most important thing. However, if you want to lead a balanced life, which is what I usually advocate, they are more or less equal. I think its important to do something physical every day, it can be a 30-minute walk, but it's also important to eat the things that will make you feel good and wont contribute to any diseases further down the line.

Why in your opinion is exercise important for mental health?

Its all about momentum. We all feel stuck sometimes and all it takes is for you to get up and start somethinganythingto start bringing movement back in your life. This can be starting a project, reading a book that inspires you, reaching out to a friend. There are so many ways to create movement in your life and the easiest one is to actually physically move. I usually get my best ideas or become motivated when Im working out and a lot of people Ive talked to, feel the same way. That connection [between] brain and physical activity is so important for our mental wellbeing.

How do you balance eating rich/ decadent meals and keeping a healthy food diet?

I like the 80/20 rule for maintenance. 80 per cent of the time, choose your food based on your healthy, 20 per cent choose your food based on your cravings. Take us through your fitness/wellness journey: did you ever have any difficulties?

I had a lot of struggles in the beginning. I needed to figure out what works and for that to happen I had to try it all in long periods of time, to be able to measure the effectiveness of an eating or workout plan. There was a lot of frustration and I broke a few times. I realised that each time I broke, I basically had to start from zero. As I failed, I learned to understand my body and my mind more. Ultimately that helped me figure out a couple of things:

If people are busy, what tips can you give them so that they can still find a way to meal-prep and eat well?

Eat simple. We are so obsessed with food nowadaysNetflix shows, restaurants at our fingertips on our devices, documentaries, travel, etc. All these things have not only solidified the importance of food in our lives but changes our perspective of it. We crave for beautifully presented dishes or meals that taste decadent. Our expectation of what a meal should look like is sometimes way too high. I cant imagine our parents or grandparents having this same obsession. They grew up with simple food cooked at home with minimal ingredients. When I make my meals at home thats what I do. Chicken breast, a sweet potato, some broccoli and brown rice; cooked with salt, pepper and olive oil. Its not the tastiest, most amazing dish, but its enough. I think we need to make peace with that.

What pre and post-workout meals do you like and what do you recommend to others?

I actually enjoy working out with just coffee and water in my system, especially before doing weights, it makes me feel light. When I used to do long cardio sessions when I was seriously into triathlons, I would grab a peanut butter and banana sandwich. For my post-workout, whatever fruit is In season, blended with some coconut water and some protein powder if available.

I just fill my plate up with vegetables. I dont mind carbohydrates, they are important in a diet, I just make sure to grab them from complex sources like fruits, starchy vegetables and whole grains.

What are your favourite guilt-free snacks?

I love Saba bananas cooked down with just some coconut water and a pandan leaf.
