India certifies CoronaOven as safe now and it could cost anywhere between 9,999 and 18,999 – Business Insider India

Developed by the nanotechnology startup Log9 Materials, the UV disinfectant product is said to have antimicrobial capabilities and can sanitise materials in ten minutes. The company claims to have sold over 1,500 units. In fact, one of its CoronaOvens has also been ordered for French President Emmanuel Macrons official residence.

We have multiple variants in two categories, portable and plug-in. The plug-in version can be plugged into a normal socket and is priced between 9,999 to 12,999 for 20 litres. While the portable one, which is battery operated, will cost around 17,999 for 20 litres. This can be used in an ambulance, a police van or a grocery delivery van, the company said.Advertisement

Log 9s team reached out to CSIO, which was designated to certify novel UV based equipment. A lab assessment of CoronaOven product range was carried out at CSIR-CSIOs centre in Taramani, Chennai. The assessment was conducted under standard temperature and humidity conditions in the lab, and the observations noted that the UV-C dose generated by CoronaOven is congruent with the FDA and NIH-conducted scientific study which said that a certain controlled amount of UVC light can permanently damage the RNA sequence of SARS-CoV1 virus and destroy its ability to multiply in living cells, the startup explained.

The development makes CoronaOven the only UV disinfectant in India so far, which has been certified by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) approved institution. The startup has also partnered with ICMR approved Dangs Path Lab in Delhi to test the efficiency of the product on microorganisms and bacteria.

The nanotechnology startup is now working with the government think tank NITI Aayog to ramp up the production and reach. It listed the product on Government of Indias e-marketplace portal (GEM).

We are working closely with NITI Aayog, government agencies, and other key stakeholders to contribute in the best possible manner to aid Indias fight against Covid-19. I believe that this will help safeguard the Indian public against non-scientific knock-offs of our product which tend to create a false positive for the consumer, Singhal added.Advertisement

What to do when the adults don’t have the answers – CNN

As my school ended in-person classes and my dinner table conversation became consumed with pandemic fears, I tried to channel my energy into doing something productive. As a person who has always been fascinated by nanotechnology -- the manipulation of matter at an extremely small scale -- I believed it could be used to potentially protect Americans from spreading the virus further.

After watching frontline workers make calls for more effective masks and hearing the struggles of health care professionals directly, I realized the great need for a lightweight mask that covers all orifices of the face. So, I began considering concepts I learned in my school's nanotechnology club and chemistry class, as well as reviewing several research articles from scientific journals. Several weeks later, I developed the idea for a nitrogen-doped graphene mask.

Though it has never been done before, the concept of a nitrogen-doped graphene mask isn't all that radical. On its own, graphene, which is a single-layered allotrope of carbon, is impermeable -- such that even a helium atom cannot pass through. However, when graphene is doped with nitrogen, some carbon bonds are broken in the graphene, thus opening up nanoscopic pores. These pores selectively allow oxygen to come in, theoretically making graphene masks breathable, yet acting as a barrier to Covid-19 particles, which are bigger than oxygen atoms.

While the possibility of manufacturing my mask -- assuming it proved to be medically sound -- at a scale necessary to combat the virus might be challenging, my hope is that my idea inspires others to think creatively about ways to tackle Covid-19. In particular, I hope it inspires my fellow Gen Z peers to recognize that we don't always need to turn to adults for the answers -- we may have a few of our own, too. And one of those ideas could save a life.

Parnika Saxena is a high school junior at the Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology in Virginia.

College senior Alexis Day: When in doubt, turn to TikTok

Like millions of students across the country, my spring semester was interrupted by the pandemic. After quickly saying my goodbyes to my fellow classmates and professors at the University of San Diego, I found myself on a drive through the desert to Las Vegas, my hometown.

As my university worked to set up a virtual classroom system, I suddenly had some extra time on my hands. In an effort to not spend all of it scrolling through Instagram and bemoaning the many missed senior moments -- from graduation to department recognitions to senior week parties -- I tried to find a medium that could both speak to my disappointment and offer a brief reprieve from the chaos of the pandemic.

Enter TikTok, a platform that shares staged video clips of people or events in a minute or less.

And, after two months at home, I have made a few TikToks myself -- though I have only shared them with my closest friends and family. They've ranged from light-hearted skits or collaborations with friends to really poor attempts at learning viral dances.

TikTok groups high school and college seniors under "Class of 2020," so when I search for recent content, I see quite a range of stories -- and watching high school students several years my junior expressing their roller-coaster of emotions, but with their signature teenage sarcasm, makes me feel a bit more youthful and energized. In other words, even if I am physically isolated, I'm not alone in my experience -- and these days that virtual connection is priceless.

Alexis Day is a recent graduate of the University of San Diego, majoring in political science and communication studies.

ARTIDIS First Prospective Study, "NANO, Evaluating its Nanotechnology Platform Based on a Novel Nanomechanical Biomarker in Breast Cancer Meets…

Basel, Switzerland, June 22, 2020 - ARTIDIS AG, a clinical stage health-tech company, announced today that its proprietary nanotechnology platform for cancer diagnosis has met the primary endpoint in the NANO clinical study. NANO was designed to demonstrate the power of using a nanomechanical biomarker to evaluate breast biopsies within a routine clinical setting. Secondary analysis indicates that the nanomechanical biomarker can be used independently of histopathology to differentiate and further categorize specific molecular subtypes of breast cancer.

Data from this study will be presented as a late-breaking abstract at the virtual Annual American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Meeting that takes place from June 22 24, 2020.

The primary endpoint of the study was to achieve a sensitivity (proportion of true positive results divided by the total number of patients with a malignant tumor) for cancer diagnosis of at least 90% (CI 95%). The analysis for the primary endpoint was performed on data obtained from 520 patients. Biopsy tissue was categorized as normal, benign or malignant based on a Nanomechanical Score as determined by the ARTIDIS nanotechnology platform. After the determination of the Nanomechanical Score, histological analysis of the same specimens was performed to serve as a gold standard for comparison with the Nanomechanical Score".

ARTIDIS was able to detect cancer, including lesions with < 5% neoplastic tissue, with a sensitivity of 96% and a specificity of 78% (CI 95%, AUC = 0.94), meeting the primary study endpoint.

We are very pleased with the excellent results from this first prospective study conducted in Switzerland. It demonstrates the clinical utility of the nanomechanical biomarker in a routine clinical setting at the patient bedside. We are convinced that this brings us one step closer to providing patients undergoing a biopsy procedure with a same day diagnosis, opening the path to personalized cancer treatment plans guided by the ARTIDISNet platform. said Marija Plodinec, PhD, CEO of ARTIDIS AG.

Secondary endpoints evaluated the ability of the nanomechanical biomarker to distinguish and further categorize molecular subtypes of breast cancer based on their aggressiveness and potentially poor treatment response.

While exploratory, secondary analysis indicates that the nanomechanical biomarker can be used independently of histopathology to differentiate and further categorize specific molecular subtypes of breast cancer (sensitivity 83%, specificity 82%, CI 95%, AUC = 0.86). The study includes a long-term follow-up of the same patients after two, five, and ten years.

Secondary analyses indicate that this novel technology will be able to subclassify the breast cancer subtypes into more or less aggressive subgroups, which could define the patients treatment plan and thus reduce over- and undertreatment. commented Dr. Rosemarie Burian, gynecologist at the Breast Center, University Hospital Basel and lead investigator of the study.

About the NANO study

To demonstrate clinical utility of the nanomechanical biomarker as measured by the ARTIDIS nanotechnology platform, a blinded prospective clinical study led by Dr. Rosemarie Burian, was conducted at the Breast Center, University Hospital Basel and at the Biozentrum, University of Basel from 2016 until 2019.

All patients undergoing a core needle or vacuum biopsy of the breast qualified for the study. Within 3 hours, fresh biopsies were analyzed in a physiological solution to maintain their viability for consecutive histological and genetic analysis within the routine clinical workflow. In total, 588 biopsies from N=545 patients were analyzed with a drop-out rate of 4.5%. 61.8% were B1-B4 (normal, benign, of uncertain malignant potential, or suspicious) and 38.2 % were B5a B5d (malignant). The majority of the B5b lesions were Luminal B, followed by Luminal A, Luminal B-like, Her2 and triple negative breast cancers.

The nanomechanical biomarker measurements of the same patients were comprehensively analyzed in relation to more than 180 structured clinical parameters per patient within the digital ARTIDISNet platform to further categorize molecular subtypes of breast cancer based on their aggressiveness and potential for poor treatment response.

I am delighted that the NANO study met its primary endpoint, said Dr. Burian. I would like to thank my radiology colleagues Dr. Sophie Dellas and her team who were essential to the success of the study, Prof. Markus Tolnays wonderful team of pathologists, in particular Prof. Ellen Obermann, Sabine Schdelin from the Clinical Trial Unit of the University Hospital, as well as the Biozentrum team led by Prof. Roderick Lim for their continuous collaboration. And, of course, I thank each of the patients who consented to participate in our study and thus supported us in their very personal way.

About ARTIDIS nanotechnology platform

ARTIDIS introduces a game-changing improvement in the field of cancer diagnostics and treatment by shortening the workflow of bedside biopsy analysis to less than three hours. The ARTIDISNet data platform integrates the mechanical biomarker data with other clinical parameters enabling personalized disease prognosis and aiding with treatment optimization, thereby significantly improving individual patient experience. Its sophisticated AI-powered algorithm allows healthcare professionals to gather insights into rich clinical data sets and supports them in tailoring the treatment of their patients securing better outcomes.

These aspects will be further examined in a multicenter study at centers in Switzerland, Germany, and the US. This will ensure that the current data is evaluated in an international setting and confirm its clinical validity across a wider cohort of patients.

We are also expanding our clinical program to include the diagnosis of lung and pancreatic cancers and to identify its potential for treatment optimization in collaboration with centers in Barcelona, Spain, and the Texas Medical Center in Houston, US, commented Dr. Marija Plodinec.

About breast cancer

Breast cancer is the number one cancer among women worldwide. Each year, 7.5 million women rely on accurate and fast diagnosis and personalized advice when undergoing routine biopsy. Existing diagnostic procedures are complex and can take up to a week or longer resulting in high anxiety and negative patient experience. Out of all biopsies analyzed, approximately 25% will render a cancer diagnosis. These patients will benefit from a reliable biomarker supporting much faster, accurate disease prognosis and treatment optimization.

About ARTIDIS AG

ARTIDIS AG is a clinical stage health-tech company located in Basel, Switzerland, that has developed the first nanomechanical biomarker for cancer diagnosis and treatment optimization. The ARTIDIS nanotechnology platform integrates different types of clinical data into the ARTIDISNet digital platform, allowing physicians to significantly shorten the current diagnostic process bringing benefit to both the patient and the healthcare system. linking three magnetic,iron-oxidenano spheres, to one doxorubicin-

loaded liposome. Aer penetration of the nano chains inside the

tumor magnetic nanoparticles were made to vibrate by generating,

radiofrequency eld which resulted in the rupture of the liposome,

thereby dispersing the drug in its free form throughout the tumor.

Tumor growth was halted more eectively by nanotechnology than the

standard treatment with doxorubicin and is less harmful to healthy cells

as very less doses of doxorubicin were used [15,16].

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) nano particles carrying payload

of antibioticsat its core were used to target bacterial infection more

precisely inside the body, as reported by scientists of MIT. e nano

delivery of particles, containing a sub-layer ofpH sensitive chains of

theamino acidhistidine, is used to destroy bacteria that have developed

resistance to antibiotics because of the targeted high dose and prolonged

release of the drug. Nanotechnology can be eciently used to treat

various infectious diseases [17,18].

Researchers in the Harvard UniversityWyss Institute have used

the biomimeticstrategy in a mouse model .Drug coated nano particles

were used to dissolve blood clots by selectively binding to the narrowed

regions in the blood vessels as theplateletsdo [19]. Biodegradable nano

particle aggregates were coated withtissue plasminogen activator, tPA,

were injectedintravenously which bind and degrade the blood clots.

Due to shear stresses in the vessel narrowing region dissociation of the

aggregates occurs and releases the tPA-coated nano particles. e nano

therapeutics can be applied greatly to reduce the bleeding, commonly

found in standardthrombosis treatment.

e researchers in the University of Kentucky have created

X-shapedRNAnano particles, which can carr y four functional modules.

ese chemically and thermodynamically stable RNA molecules are

able of remaining intact in the mouse body for more than 8 hours and to

resist degradation byRNAsin the blood stream. ese X-shaped RNA

can be eectively performing therapeutic and diagnostic functions.

ey regulate gene expression and cellular function, and are capable of

binding to cancer cells with precision, due to its design [20,21].

Minicell nano particle are used in early phase clinical trial for

drug delivery for treatment of patients with advanced and untreatable

cancer. e minicells are built from the membranes of mutant bacteria

and were loaded withpaclitaxeland coated withcetuximab, antibodies

and used for treatment of a variety of cancers. e tumor cells engulf

the minicells. Once inside the tumor, the anti-cancer drug destroys the

tumor cells. e larger size of minicells plays a better prole in side-

eects. e minicell drug delivery system uses lower dose of drug and

has less side-eects can be used to treat a number of dierent cancers

with dierent anti-cancer drugs [22,23].

Nano sponges are important tools [24] in drug delivery, due to

their small size and porous nature they can bind poorly-soluble drugs

within their matrix and improve their bioavailability. ey can be made

to carry drugs to specic sites, thus help to prevent drug and protein

degradation and can prolong drug release in a controlled manner.

Proteins and Peptide Delivery

Protein and peptides are macromolecules and are called

biopharmaceuticals. ese have been identied for treatment of

various diseases and disorders as they exert multiple biological actions

in human body. Nano materials like nano particles and dendrimers

are called as nano biopharmaceuticals , are used for targeted and/or

controlled delivery.

As the COVID-19 pandemic rages on, the media continues to rattle off statistics at full force.

However, without a frame of reference, numbers such as the death toll can be difficult to interpret. Mortalities attributed to the virus, for example, are often measured in the thousands of people per day globallybut is this number a little or a lot, relative to typical causes of death?

Todays graphic uses data from Our World in Data to provide context with the total number of worldwide daily deaths. It also outlines how many people who die each day from specific causes.

Nearly 150,000 people die per day worldwide, based on the latest comprehensive research published in 2017. Which diseases are the most deadly, and how many lives do they take per day?

Heres how many people die each day on average, sorted by cause:

Cardiovascular diseases, or diseases of the heart and blood vessels, are the leading cause of death. However, their prominence is not reflected in our perceptions of death nor in the media.

While the death toll for HIV/AIDS peaked in 2004, it still affects many people today. The disease causes over 2,600 daily deaths on average.

Interestingly, terrorism and natural disasters cause very few deaths in relation to other causes. That said, these numbers can vary from day to dayand year to yeardepending on the severity of each individual instance.

On a national level, these statistics vary further. Below are the total deaths from all causes for selected countries, based on 2017 data.

China and India both see more than 25,000 total deaths per day, due to their large populations.

However, with 34.7 daily deaths per million people each day, Russia has the highest deaths proportional to population out of any of these countries.

While these numbers help provide some context for the global scale of COVID-19 deaths, they do not offer a direct comparison.

The fact is that many of the aforementioned death rates are based on much larger and consistent sample sizes of data. On the flipside, since WHO declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11, 2020, daily confirmed deaths have fallen in a wide range between 272 and 10,520 per dayand there is no telling what could happen in the future.

On top of this variance, data on confirmed COVID-19 deaths has other quirks. For example, testing rates for the virus may vary between jurisdictions, and there have also been disagreements between authorities on how deaths should even be tallied in the first place. This makes getting an accurate picture surprisingly complicated.

While its impossible to know the true death toll of COVID-19, it is clear that in some countries daily deaths have reached rates 50% or higher than the historical average for periods of time:

Time, and further analysis, will be required to determine a more accurate COVID-19 death count.

Study Shows Protons Tend to Move Along Interface Between Two Mediums – AZoM

Written by AZoMMay 26 2020

The H+ proton contains a single ion of hydrogen, which is the lightest and smallest among all the chemical elements. Such protons occur in water naturally where a small proportion of H2O molecules gets split up instantaneously.

Image Credit: Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL)

The amount of protons in a liquid decides if the solution is basic or acidic. Moreover, the protons are highly mobile, shifting via water by jumping from one water molecule to another.

There has been a good understanding of the way this transport process functions in a body of water. However, the existence of a solid surface can drastically impact the behavior of protons, and at present, the researchers have very few tools to quantify such movements at water-solid interfaces.

In the latest study, Jean Comtet, a postdoctoral researcher at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) School of Engineering (STI), has offered the first-ever insight into the behavior of protons when water comes into contact with a solid surface, diving down to the maximum scale of a single proton and single charge.

The study results were published in the Nature Nanotechnology journal and show that protons move along the interface between these two mediums. Scientists from the Department of Chemistry at the cole Normale Suprieure (ENS) in Paris also contributed to the study by performing simulations.

Comtet examined the interface between a boron nitride crystal (a very smooth material) and water.

The surface of the crystal can contain defects. We found that these imperfections act as markers, reemitting light when a proton binds to them.

Jean Comtet, Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Engineering, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne

Comtet used a super-resolution microscope to view such fluorescence signals and quantify the location of the defects to within about 10 nma very high degree of accuracy. The more fascinating fact of the study is that it still offered a new understanding of how the crystalline defects are triggered.

We observed defects on the surface of the crystal lighting up one after another when they came into contact with water. We realized that this lighting pattern was produced by a single proton jumping from defect to defect, generating an identifiable pathway.

Jean Comtet, Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Engineering, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne

One of the main findings of the study was that the protons move along the water-solid interface. According to Comtet, The protons keep on moving, but hugging the surface of the solid. Thats why we see these kinds of patterns.

Aleksandra Radenovic, professor at EPFLs Laboratory of Nanoscale Biology (LBEN), stated that This is a major experimental breakthrough that furthers our understanding of how charges in water interact with solid surfaces.

Our observations, in this specific context, can easily be extrapolated to other materials and environments. These discoveries could have important implications in many other fields and disciplines, from understanding biological processes at the cell-membrane interface to designing more efficient filters and batteries.

Jean Comtet, Postdoctoral Researcher, School of Engineering, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne

Comtet, J., et al. (2020) Direct observation of water-mediated single-proton transport between hBN surface defects. Nature Nanotechnology. doi.org/10.1038/s41565-020-0695-4.

Surrey reveals its implantable biosensor that operates without batteries – Science Codex

Researchers from the University of Surrey have revealed their new biodegradable motion sensor - paving the way for implanted nanotechnology that could help future sports professionals better monitor their movements to aid rapid improvements, or help caregivers remotely monitor people living with dementia.

In a paper published by Nano Energy, a team from Surrey's Advanced Technology Institute (ATI), in partnership with Kyung Hee University in South Korea, detail how they developed a nano-biomedical motion sensor which can be paired with AI systems to recognise movements of distinct body parts.

The ATI's technology builds on its previous work around triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG), where researchers used the technology to harness human movements and generate small amounts of electrical energy. Combining the two means self-powered sensors are possible without the need for chemical or wired power sources.

In their new research, the team from the ATI developed a flexible, biodegradable and long-lasting TENG from silk cocoon waste. They used a new alcohol treatment technique, which leads to greater durability for the device, even under harsh or humid environments.

Dr. Bhaskar Dudem, project lead and Research Fellow at the ATI, said: "We are excited to show the world the immense potential of our durable, silk film based nanogenerator. It's ability to work in severe environments while being able to generate electricity and monitor human movements positions our TENG in a class of its own when it comes to the technology."

Professor Ravi Silva, Director of the ATI, said: "We are proud of Dr Dudem's work which is helping the ATI lead the way in developing wearable, flexible, and biocompatible TENGs that efficiently harvest environmental energies. If we are to live in a future where autonomous sensing and detecting of pathogens is important, the ability to create both self-powered and wireless biosensors linked to AI is a significant boost."

Final round of COVID-19 seed funding supports 11 new projects – The Ohio State University News

The Ohio State Universitys Office of Research announced details of the final round of funding to boost research in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Eleven additional projects were awarded funding for a total of $310,000. Through three rounds of funding, 24 projects were awarded over $770,000 from the Office of Research.

Natalia Higuita-Castro, assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, is the lead investigator for one of the round-three projects. Her research will use next-generation nanocarriers based on engineered extracellular vesicles (EVs) to deliver anti-inflammatory therapies to lungs injured by the novel coronavirus.

The gold standard is nature. As an engineer, rather than reinventing the wheel, I try to learn from nature, she said. Nature has this amazing method to produce these nanocarriers and what we do in my lab is to use nanotechnology to engineer them to deliver specific molecular cargo to the inflamed lung.

Higuita-Castro, member of the Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute at the Ohio States Wexner Medical Center, is working with her collaborators on a treatment for COVID-19-induced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a life-threatening condition characterized by severe inflammation and damage of the lungs that can eventually lead to respiratory failure.

The therapy Higuita-Castro is developing will be designed to decrease the inflammation, giving the patients own system a better chance to overcome the infection.

Your own immune system has to do the work and overcome the infection, but we are shifting that balance from a severe inflammatory state to a more balanced state, to potentially aid faster recovery and reduce lung damage, she said.

Morley O. Stone, senior vice president for research, said the universitys multidisciplinary approach positions Ohio State to provide innovative solutions to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Office of Research supported 10 additional projects in the third round of funding:
