Cell Origami: Self-Folding of Three-Dimensional Cell-Laden Microstructures Driven by Cell Traction Force http://www.plosone.org scale bars in the movies: 50 um (micron) 3D cell-laden microstructures are produced by applying the principle of origami folding technique and cell traction force. The CTF is harnessed as a biological driving force to fold the microstructures. Cells stretch and adhere across multiple microplates. Upon detaching the microplates from a substrate, CTF causes the plates to lift and fold according to a prescribed pattern. We successfully produced various 3D cell-laden microstructures by just changing the geometry of the patterned 2D plates. We also achieved mass-production of the 3D cell-laden microstructures without causing damage to the cells. Company says it has made an invisibility cloak
A US company says it has made a camouflage material that makes its wearer invisible. Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp, a Canadian camouflage design company, claims the technology, called Quantum Stealth, works by bending light waves around the wearer. "The material removes not only your visual, infrared (night vision) and thermal signatures but also the target #39;s shadow," Hyperstealth president and CEO Guy Cramer said in a statement on the company #39;s website. Mr Cramer said he could not reveal how the material bent light or show photos of it working "for reasons of security". Photos published on the website that are described as a "mock up" show a woman lying on grass draped in a material that looks exactly like the grass around her. Mr Cramer said the US military and two Canadian military groups had tested the material and could vouch for it working "without batteries, lights or mirrors". He also claimed to be working with the US military to develop the technology further. But don #39;t put one on your Christmas list just yet. Mr Cramer said he did not expect the material would be made available for sale to the public.
