Students learn to adapt to wins and woes of online laboratory classes – Daily Bruin

Christina Gallup was excited to learn common biological lab techniques during her introductory bioengineering lab course because her past lab courses had taught chemistry lab skills.

However, Gallup, a third-year bioengineering student, dropped Bioengineering 167L: Bioengineering Laboratory and will take it in fall instead because she believed the new online format prevented her from getting the hands-on experience she needed to fully master the techniques.

Watching the TAs perform the experiments is not really the same thing as actually doing them, Gallup said. I went to the first lecture to understand what was happening in the class, and I just felt it wasnt going to be as beneficial as it could be.

UCLA moved spring quarter instruction completely online on March 13 to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus, challenging professors to restructure their spring quarter laboratory classes to compensate for the lack of in-person lab sessions.

Timothy Fisher, the chair of the mechanical and aerospace engineering department, planned to implement microcontrollers, or small compact circuits, into his laboratory course before classes were held online but had not put his idea into practice yet.

However, the transition to remote learning made this change necessary because students can use microcontrollers at home, unlike the measurement devices usually used in his course, he said.

Fisher, also reduced the number of labs in his class and added a microcontroller-based independent project. Teaching assistants for his class now generate mock lab data based on previous years and students perform analysis in Zoom breakout rooms during lab sessions.

The videos students watch during the required lectures that depict the experiments cannot replace the in-person lab experience, Fisher added.

Obviously were never going to replace the on-campus experience because touching and seeing something in three-dimension is fundamentally different than watching someone else do it on a computer screen, Fisher said.

Amanda Freise, a lecturer in the microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics department, teaches a two quarter long laboratory class about viruses that infect bacteria, with the first half starting in spring quarter.

Freise moved fall quarters content, where students analyze genomes, to spring, since students can access the necessary bioinformatics tools from their computers at home. She also adjusted the labs so students could complete them individually instead of in the usual teams of four.

Freise said she did not realize how much she relied on in-person teaching to deliver important information to students.

We have slides and readings, but there were so many little sticking points or things that would need troubleshooting in class, Freise said. Im not working with everybody in person or at the same time, (so) I have to really think about what the problems could be and then incorporate them into the materials.

Freise said the majority of her students watch the lectures live but have their audio and video off. Students are also hesitant to participate when she asks for questions or in-class discussion, she added.

I worry that the format of the course may prevent (students) from feeling excited about the work, Freise said. If I had to guess, I think that they are not enjoying the remote learning as much as they would doing this work in a classroom.

However, online learning allowed Fisher to increase the breadth and complexity of error analysis taught in the course because he can work directly with students during the scheduled lab sessions, he added.

I dont love Zoom but being able to just kind of pop around from breakout room to breakout room really helps, Fisher said. Were able to engage with (students) in a different and less distracted way.

Some students embraced the move to online learning, while others sat it out.

Aly Ung, a third-year bioengineering student, said she thinks how much students enjoy their lab courses depends on what they hoped to get out of them in the first place. Ung is currently enrolled in Bioengineering 167L.

Teaching assistants talk through laboratory procedures during lab sections and students complete post-lab assignments using provided data, Ung said. She added students are also required to analyze research articles related to the assignments.

Ung said she still enjoys the course because the research lab she works in already familiarized her with many of the protocols taught in Bioengineering 167L, allowing her to focus on gaining a deeper understanding of the techniques.

What Im learning now is basically hyperfocusing on what I want to learn, which is the motivations behind the experimental design, Ung said.

Kenji Miura, a second-year chemistry and material science student, said he prefers the online version of his chemistry lab because he can focus on the science without having to perform the labs.

I actually hate chem lab with a burning passion, so the fact that its not in-person is great, Miura said. (The labs) are just very stressful.

Miura said he also enjoys the online lab lectures more flexible time constraints because his professor can spend more time on the material.

He added he chose to stay in his two lab courses because dropping them would force him to graduate late.

Tejas Patel, a second-year biochemistry student, said he enjoys the flexibility of his online lab but misses the troubleshooting aspect of performing labs in person. His lab course requires students to complete virtual labs through the online application Labster.

Because (the experiments) are in the virtual lab, I dont think you have the opportunity to like mess up and learn where you messed up, Patel said. If you realize you messed up its a learning experience, and I think thats very valuable for students.

University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez Student Participates in Exchange To Stay on Track With Her MBA – WNMU News

Diana Velez Cartaya is a masters of business administration student from the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez (UPRM). She is taking an online business statistics course this spring and was the first student who enrolled in a WNMU course since our universities entered a memorandum of understanding last fall.

The past biology student had begun a bioengineering program at UPRM but soon realized it was not for her. Thinking about other options, I figured having a degree as flexible as an MBA would still allow me to work in the health field but taking a more administrative role, she says. With science its black and white but business offers you the gray part of the spectrum.

In her third semester, shes hoping to graduate in spring 2021, but due to having started in a different field, shes behind her classmates. Courses are offered only every other semester at UPRM, so the option to take statistics online through WNMU helps Diana catch up. This works with my schedule, she says.

Diana says she prefers how WNMU evaluates students in the MBA program. In my current classes, we have tests with bigger weights. With this course, we have lots of smaller opportunities to make sure our grades are doing well and to learn in smaller chunks. I think the pace of this course is helpful for the learners.

The format of this course offers a fresh way for Diana and her peers to contribute to the class as well. Instead of it having to be based on quizzes or face to face, you can still interact and help other peers through online platforms. The way I see it is communication is slowly becoming more online, and its time most institutions had these options that are more student-centered, she says.

Diana feels a sense of gratitude for the chance to be a WNMU student. I just think that its a good option for us to have here at our university, she says.

Bioengineering repairs uterus resulting in live births in rabbits – BioNews

6 July 2020

Researchers looking for an alternative to uterus transplants successfully restored uterine structure and function in rabbits using bioengineered uterine tissue.

The research, published in Nature Biotechnology, showed that the engineered tissue developed native tissue-like structures and was able to support pregnancies leading to live births.

'The study shows that engineered uterine tissue is able to support normal pregnancies, and fetal development was normal,' said author Professor Anthony Atala from theWake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine in North Carolina. 'With further development, this approach may provide a pathway to pregnancy for women with an abnormal uterus'.

In the study, 78 rabbits were randomly assigned to four different groups: groups one to three had most of their uterine tissue removed. Group four was a normal control group, where animals underwent a sham surgery but no tissue was removed.

In group one the excision was repaired with a synthetic polymer scaffold containing cells collected from the tissue that was removed; group two underwent repair with the polymer scaffold only; in group three no extra material was added and the remaining edges were stitched together.

The polymer scaffolds degraded after three months. At six months the group that had repair with the scaffold only developed a thin uterine wall, but the group that received the scaffold seeded with cellshad developed native tissue-like structures including distinct endometrium and myometrium tissue layers, and were expressing progesterone and oestrogen hormone receptors. The excision-only group formed scar tissue.

The rabbits were mated naturally with fertile males six months after the procedures. Four out of ten rabbits from the tissue-engineered group had normal pregnancies and gave birth to healthy offspring with normal body weights. No fetal development occurred in the scaffold-only or excision-only groups.

'This is a highly significant finding with great potential for future human application. For women who suffer infertility due to a severely damaged uterus or because of a hysterectomy then adaptations of this approach may well find clinical application,' saidProfessor Darren Griffin from the University of Kent, who was not involved in the study.

Uterus transplantation became a viable treatment following the first successful transplant which led to a live birth in 2014. However, this treatment is associated with a range of issues including lack of donors, transplant rejection and the risk of disease transmission. Bioengineered uteri could be an alternative treatment method for women with uterine infertility; however, more preclinical studies need to be carried out before clinical trials can be performed in humans.

How to work from home without hurting your back – Futurity: Research News

While makeshift workstations may meet basic needs as so many people work from home due to the pandemic, most fail to provide sound ergonomic design, according to researcher April Chambers.

People are creating makeshift workspaces from their dining room tables, kitchen counters, living room couches, or folding tables and chairs.

As a result, Chambers, an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Education who specializes in occupational ergonomics and bioengineering, expects a steep rise in the number of people who are experiencing pain or discomfort in their neck, back, or shoulders. Unchecked, the pain can develop into long-term musculoskeletal injuries.

At least one-third of workers report musculoskeletal discomfort and injuries when they are in a normal office environment with a desk and a chair. You can imagine it will be much higher in our current climate, says Chambers.

She says people can take several basic actions to make their home workstation more comfortable and reduce injury potential.

The best practices are built on research, as well as recommendations from the US Department of Labors Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH).

First and foremost, Chambers advises people working from home to focus on improving their posture, both in how they sit or stand and in how their work station is designed. The ideal posture is a neutral posture since it places the least strain on the joints and muscles.

Anatomically, your body is designed to best withstand force in a certain posture. You cant change your body weight (the force), but your posture changes how it is applied, says Chambers. She compares that to a car being out of alignment and the damage it does to tires.

In terms of a persons workstation setup, Chambers says you should set the top of the computer monitor at an eye-level height or slightly below. If the monitor is too low, then you can raise its height by propping books underneath. In addition, the screen should be an arms length away. Furthermore, people using laptops should avoid working with the laptop in their lap because looking down at the screen can place strain on the neck.

In addition, the chair a person sits in should provide lower-back support, she says. Those with uncomfortable chairs should roll up a towel or insert a pillow to provide lumbar support.

Chambers also has tips for how you should position yourself when seated. Your neck should be kept straight; your shoulders should be relaxed; and your arms should be at your sides. Elbows should be close to a 90-degree angle, although 70 to 130 degrees is within the acceptable range. Wrists should be straight. Legs and hips should be at a 90-degree angle. Place your feet flat on the floor. If your feet do not reach the floor, books or a small stool can become a support surface.

People working from home should also build more activity in their workday in order to improve their home ergonomics, says Chambers. Movement can include short activity breaks like walks, stretching, or physical fitness.

We take for granted the extent of our movement at the work office. When working from home, you dont have to walk down the hallway to make copies or walk across campus for a meeting. Those were movement breaks naturally built into our day, says Chambers.

Chambers also recommends that people add movement to their home workday by alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day. This is important, she says, because human bodies should not stay idle for long stretches of time.

When working in a standing position, the monitor should still be at or just below eye-level, your upper arms should be close to the body with the wrist straight, and your hands should be at or below the level of the elbows. You should also make sure your head, neck, torso, and legs are in line. You should also wear comfortable shoes with good support if standing for a period of time while working.

Alternating positions are critically important to relieve musculoskeletal discomfort. You could be in the perfect seated position, but the human body is not designed to stay still. We are meant to move, says Chambers.

In addition to including movement breaks, people should also take breaks to limit their continuous screen time, she says. She recommends following the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes spent staring at the computer screen, spend 20 seconds looking at something else that is 20 feet away. This exercise reduces eye strain, which in turn reduces associated headaches.

Eye strain is being overlooked. It can damage vision, cause headaches. You will also see it manifest itself in posture issues, with people hunching over as their eyes get tired, says Chambers.

Chambers urges any person experiencing pain or discomfort to take immediate action.

Anyone who is facing discomfort is at risk for developing a longer-term injury. This is your bodys way of telling you that something is wrong, and you should listen to it, says Chambers.

Like the million of other Americans, Chambers has also been working from home. She tries to practice what she preaches about ergonomics by incorporating activity breaks throughout the day and by using a sit-stand desk to alternate her posture.

Its a matter of establishing a new pattern or rhythm for yourself, she says.

NIOSH funded Chambers with a career award to examine occupational injury risk and discomfort.

Stanford Bioengineers Manipulated Molecules to Create Proteins That Fight Off Cancer and Recreate Neurons – Science Times

In a new study, a team of researchers led by Stanford bioengineer and department chair Jennifer Cochranadjusted a single molecule in slightly different ways to produce two amazing yet varying results. One set of modifications caused neuronal cells to regenerate, while various tweaks to the same proteinrestricted lung tumor growth.

The experiments were conducted on rats, human cells, or mice cells that act as models for actual disease processes. Although the researchers say that it would take a while before tests could be conducted on humans, encouraging results from animal studies show potential for human trials. Furthermore, it shows how scientists are increasingly becoming capable of manipulating the body's protein-based control systems to aid vital organs in healing themselves.

Cochran is hopeful that engineered ligands and receptors will continue in proving that the promising class of drugs can combat diseases and maintain health. The full findings of the study were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Also Read: Nanotechnology: A Possible Cure for Cancer?

Cells are what compose major body organs. Protein messengers known as ligandsbind to receptors on the surfaces of cells to manage biological processes and keep the body healthy. When those messages get mixed up, it can make the body ill with a variety of diseases.

Cochran's lab analyzes how ligands and receptorswork together to deliver messages to cells. Moreover, they study how these interactions can be engineered to create potent therapeutic agents.

Shape is the vital concept, Cochran says. Just like all proteins, ligands and receptors are made up of many different amino acidsstrung together and folded into definite three-dimensional shapes. A ligand possessing the right form fits its matching receptor similar to how a key fits a lock.

Researchers are hopeful that one day, the proteins could be used in treating cancers, neurodegenerative conditions, and other diseases such as atherosclerosis and osteoporosis.

By using complex molecular engineering approaches, the researchers are able to alter the lineup of amino acids in a ligand. This process allows them to make millions of keys which they can screen to determine which might unlock its matching receptor.

Furthermore, bioengineering can also be used to convert ligands into antagonists. These antagonists also fit the receptor lock, but somehow blocks the signal and therefore might hinder a function like cell growth.

In a collaboration last year with the University of California - San Francisco cancer researcher Alejandro Sweet-Cordero, Cochran published a paperdemonstrating how an altered version of the receptor protein CNTFR, helped stop lung tumor growth in rodents.

The new experimentsbank on that work as a research team led by graduate student Jun Kim engineered the ligand known as CLCF1. Moreover, the altered ligand was made to bind with the CNTFR receptor. By making a single set of amino acid adjustments in CLCF1, Kim made that ligand into a superagonist.

When the team added the new superagonist to a tissue culture of damaged neuronal cells, the engineered CLCF1 increased the messaging signals that promote the growth of axons. The results suggest that the engineered ligand was promoting wounded neurons to reconstruct themselves.

Reciprocally, Jun Kim and his team showed that, by introducing a few additional amino acid alterations to CLCF1, the ligandcould be turned into a potent antagonist that could inhibit the growth of lung tumors in mice. This mechanism then suggests a different possible medicinal use for this variation of the molecule.

Novel biomaterial could be used to accelerate bone regeneration – Drug Target Review

In lab conditions, a new biomaterial was able to accelerate bone regeneration by boosting an immune response that encourages repair.

Scientists at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences report they have developed a new biomaterial that has the potential to accelerate bone regeneration by promoting an immune response that encourages repair and lowers the risk of inflammation.

The team developed a technology that is a combination of nanoparticles and a collagen-based biomaterial called a scaffold, specifically designed by the researchers that can be surgically implanted to aid bone tissue repair. The material allows for the delivery of a microRNA silencer, a molecule capable of influencing the way cells function.

In laboratory conditions, the researchers successfully demonstrated that damaged bone tissue can be restored as the particular microRNA delivered by the biomaterial works to increase the number of cells responsible for bone repair. The technology also assists in promoting a pro-repair immune system response, lowering the risk of inflammation and other complications.

The results of our research are a promising step towards improving health outcomes for patients with fractures that fail to repair naturally or have degenerative bone diseases such as osteoporosis, although further pre-clinical and clinical trials are still required before the technology could be used to treat humans, said Dr Caroline Curtin, Lecturer in Anatomy and Regenerative Medicine at RCSI.

We are confident that this biomaterial system will have several potential applications beyond bone repair, as it can be tailored to deliver other therapeutic molecules that address degenerated or diseased tissue in the body. At RCSI Tissue Engineering Research Group, we are exploring these possibilities through the development of similar methods to repair articular joints like the knee and hip and attempting to apply the microRNA delivery systems to inhibit breast cancer cell growth and other novel research, said Professor Fergal OBrien, RCSI Director of Research and Innovation, Professor of Bioengineering and Regenerative Medicine.

The findings were published in Acta Biomaterialia.

A protective rubber harness to be worn over a face mask – InnovationMap

With the gig economy continuing to grow especially in light of the COVID-19-caused crisis and growing unemployment a Houston startup has created a portal for companies to access technology-focused freelancers.

FreelancingTeams, co-founded by Raj Tal, allows companies to easily search and find tech professionals for projects as well as manage that team throughout the work. On the other side of the table, the startup is allowing the country's growing population of freelancers a platform to get picked up for jobs.

"We are changing the way we look at team building," Kal says, noting that a huge percentage of freelancers struggle to find jobs with existing resources.

Not only does FreelancingTeams act as a marketplace for tech talent, but Tal says the platform allows for project management and payment processes. While there are other talent portals like Fiverr and Upwork this added capability sets the startups apart from its competition.

"People come in with an idea, and they can do it from start to finish," Tal says, explaining that users don't have to find separate tools to find their team, manage the project, and price and pay for the work.

FreelancingTeams is free for clients to list and staff their projects, and a 10 to 15 percent cut comes out of the freelancer side. However, there is an option for clients to upgrade to a paid subscription option for larger, more complex projects that require additional hands-on management resources from FreelancingTeams.

With its free option, FreelancingTeams has seen a lot of interest from startups looking to build there minimum viable product, or MVP.

"We are working with a lot of startups as a Station Houston partner," Tal says. "We are helping them get their MVP done, so that when they come to our platform, we can work with them to understand the requirements and connect them to their teams."

Betsy Furler, founder of For All Abilities, a Houston-based software company aims to help businesses support employees with ADHD, Dyslexia, learning differences, and Autism, recently used FreelancingTeams to staff her MVP development project. She says using the platform made it easy to manage and test the work the freelancers were doing.

"FreelancingTeams helped me build my MVP quickly and inexpensively," Furler says. "Their quote was much less expensive than the others [I received] and the work was fantastic. Because of the platform, I also spent more time thinking through what features were needed and how to prioritize the, rather than just giving a developer or project manager a list to complete."

Outside of affordably building tech for startups, the coronavirus has greatly affected the workforce with unemployment at a historic high. This has led to an increased interest in freelancing.

"A lot of people are unemployed and are looking for alternative options," Tal says. "Freelancing is a place where we are seeing large growth."

He says he's also observing an increased interest in freelancers from large companies and even retailers who need to upgrade their online presence.

"The COVID situation has brought more challenges to bigger businesses, and they are looking for cost-effective solutions as well," Tal says.

Tal is looking to grow FreelancingTeams, which might include fundraising in the future, he says. For now, the company has a low overhead and uses freelancers on its own site to develop its technology.

"The next step for us is to grow bigger in Houston and then around Texas," Tal says.

This ‘spray’ by IIT Guwahati can prove to be a game-changer in fight against coronavirus – Campus Varta

In the fight against the coronavirus pandemic, Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) across the country are trying their best to aid the battle against the deadly contagion. A major problem with the identification and treatment of infected patients is the lack of Personal Protective Equipment Kits (PPE). A PPE kit can also become the source of the infection if not used properly.

Now, to overcome this problem, and for the safe usage of PPE kits by doctors, Prof. Biman B. Mandalof the Department of Bioscience and Bioengineering, IIT Guwahati, has prepared a spray with his PhD scholarMr. Bibhas K. Bhunia

Professor Mandal said that the most important thing to protect against coronavirus is the face mask. It is used by doctors, healthcare professionals and common people as well for the protection against catching the virus and acts as a barrier to the virus. It helps in protecting us from various microbes. Professor Mandal said that since the mask cannot be used again, it is needed in large numbers.

At the same time, the mask or fabric if not used properly, becomes the carrier of the virus. In such a situation, the spray made by IIT is very effective. In a way, this spray acts as an additional coating, through which the PPE kit can also be used again.

Prof. Mandal said that the price of the spray prepared by IIT Guwahati is quite reasonable, as well as it has been prepared according to industry standards, so that its manufacturing will not have to undergo much changes in future. He said that we are engaged in a fight against coronavirus pandemic under the leadership of our Professor T.G. Sitharam.

How the spray works

To make the PPE kits safe, this spray is sprayed on it or you can use it by immersing it in liquid. Mandal said that exposure to this antimicrobial (antiviral / antibacterial) spray kills bacteria. The spray acts as an antimicrobial agent in the presence of a metal nanoparticle cocktail such as copper, silver, and other active elements present in the spray.
