GUWAHATI: Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati are working on out-of-the-box ideas that can help prevent or reduce short-term memory losses associated with Alzheimers disease.

Our research has provided a different path that may extend the onset of the Alzheimers disease. However, it would take testing in animal models and clinical trials before bringing in such new therapeutic approaches into human treatment said one of the project coordinators, Professor Vibin Ramakrishnan of Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at the institute.

The IIT Guwahati team reports interesting methods such as application of low-voltage electric field, and the use of trojan peptides to arrest aggregation of neurotoxic molecules in the brain. The scientists are assisted by research scholars Dr. Gaurav Pandey and Jahnu Saikia in their work, and the results of their studies have been published in reputed journals such as ACS Chemical Neuroscience, RSC Advances of Royal Society of Chemistry, BBA and Neuropeptides, a statement said.

Approximately hundred potential drugs for treatment of Alzheimers disease have failed between 1998 and 2011, which shows the gravity of the problem, says Professor Ramakrishnan, who participates in worldwide efforts at finding cures for the disease.

A defining hallmark of Alzheimers is the accumulation of Amyloid beta peptides in the brain. Dr. Ramakrishnan and Dr. Nemade are seeking methods to reduce the accumulation of these peptides, in order to arrest the progression of Alzeimers.

Bioengineers Are Using Levitation on Dead Cells to Preserve the Living – Futurism

In the delicate work of bioengineering, dead cells get everywhere and become a major nuisance.

Now, Stanford scientists have figured out how to separate the dead cells from the living, using magnetic levitation, gently pulling them away from the still-useful survivors without ripping everything apart, according to New Scientist. Magnetic levitation itself isnt new, but learning that it can suck up dead cells is, and the scientists are eager to show how it can improve everything from cancer research to 3D-printed scaffolds.

Take cancer research, for example. In research shared online last month, the scientists suggest that an experimental drug could be dropped onto a clump of cells. As cancerous cells die, assuming they do, the scientists could levitate them away from the rest of the cells as a way to track and quantify their progress.

Without levitation, one of the main ways to separate living from dead cells is to spin them in a centrifuge until they form groups based on density. That process can be extremely destructive at the cellular scale, so the team argues that separating cells based on magnetic signatures is a far gentler (and therefore, more useful) approach.

Then theres 3D printing: being able to lift dead cells out of whatever organ or tissue youre trying to synthesize without scraping the good stuff along with it would make life much easier for scientists handling the extremely delicate work.

For now, the actual use-cases are speculative, though. Scientists have only gotten so far as learning that they can levitate dead cells without perturbing the survivors, but you cant fault them for letting their imaginations run a little wild with the possibilities.

The University of Canterburys Mechanical Engineeringexperts are among the Kiwi innovators battling againstCOVID-19.

While commercial devices for crowd feverdetection exist, the global pandemic has made them hard tocome by. The CacophonyProject and2040 developed low-cost smart thermal camera systems fortracking the predators that threaten New Zealands nativebirds, and have been pivoting the technology to meet thisurgent need.

Working with the University ofCanterbury, Callaghan Innovation, and the AucklandBioengineering Institute with testing, calibration andwriting for the instruction manual, they have repurposedtheir technology for crowd fever scanning at a safedistance. The system can measure forehead temperature to+/-0.5C without a human operator.

UC mechanicalengineers JulianPhillips, Lecturer TimGiffney and Professor MarkJermy have developed a temperature reference to give aconstant check calibration of these devices. The devices areunder trial and hoped to be implemented shortly to curb thespread of the virus.

If thermal imaging cameras aredeployed for temperature screening, this stable temperaturereference can help with accuracy. We hope this stablein-frame temperature reference could be useful as a simple,rapidly deliverable approach, UC Engineering Lecturer TimGiffney says.

By putting a stable temperaturesource in view of the camera, the system can continuouslycheck its reading, and make adjustments, UC Engineeringtechnician Julian Phillips adds.

The main challengein developing the reference was coming up with a design thatcould be rapidly built with minimal resources, and fromlocal supplies as international freight is at an almostcomplete standstill.

Fortunately I have quite awell-equipped workshop at home, needing only a few items tobe obtained from UC, Phillips says. In January Itravelled to Tonga to support a team of ourUC biomedical engineering students working on donatedmedical equipment. The experience of working underconstrained resources was good preparation for working underlockdown a similar level of flexibility and tenacity isrequired to get the job done.

About 30 soldiersfrom Burnham, as well as New Zealand Police officers, wereused to test and calibrate the cameras. To help control thespread of COVID-19 it is envisaged the cameras will be usedat airports, hospitals, supermarkets and otherworkplaces.

Objects at close to human bodytemperature only emit a very small amount of radiated heat,which is difficult to detect in the camera sensor. Thismeans it is not easy to make an accurate thermal camera thatis insensitive to external conditions.

Comparingthe temperature of a surface to our reference at knowntemperature is less difficult. This could allow a widervariety of thermal imaging cameras to be used, which wouldbe useful in case of shortage.

The internalcorrection routines of some cameras can also causeinconsistent readings, which our method could helpcontinuously calibrateout.

Initiative aims to speed delivery of accurate, easy-to-use, scalable tests to all Americans.

The National Institutes of Health today announced a new initiative aimed at speeding innovation, development and commercialization of COVID-19 testing technologies, a pivotal component needed to return to normal during this unprecedented global pandemic. With a $1.5 billion investment from federal stimulus funding, the newly launched Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) initiative will infuse funding into early innovative technologies to speed development of rapid and widely accessible COVID-19 testing. At the same time, NIH will seek opportunities to move more advanced diagnostic technologies swiftly through the development pipeline toward commercialization and broad availability. NIH will work closely with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to advance these goals.

The stimulus investment supercharges NIHs strong research efforts already underway focused on prevention and treatment of COVID-19, including the recently announced planned Accelerating COVID-19 Therapeutic Interventions and Vaccines public-private partnership to coordinate the international research response to the pandemic.

We need all innovators, from the basement to the boardroom, to come together to advance diagnostic technologies, no matter where they are in development, said NIH Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D. Now is the time for that unmatched American ingenuity to bring the best and most innovative technologies forward to make testing for COVID-19 widely available.

As part of this initiative, NIH is urging all scientists and inventors with a rapid testing technology to compete in a national COVID-19 testing challenge for a share of up to $500 million over all phases of development. The technologies will be put through a highly competitive, rapid three-phase selection process to identify the best candidates for at-home or point-of-care tests for COVID-19. Finalists will be matched with technical, business and manufacturing experts to increase the odds of success. If certain selected technologies are already relatively far along in development, they can be put on a separate track and be immediately advanced to the appropriate step in the commercialization process.The goal is to make millions of accurate and easy-to-use tests per week available to all Americans by the end of summer 2020, and even more in time for the flu season.

Americans are innovators and makers, said Bruce J. Tromberg, Ph.D., director of NIHs National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB). We need American tech experts, innovators and entrepreneurs to step up to one of the toughest challenges weve faced as a country, to help get us safely back to public spaces.

While diagnostic testing has long been a mainstay of public health, newer technologies offer patient- and user-friendly designs, mobile-device integration, reduced cost and increased accessibility both at home and at the point of care. RADx will expand the Point-of-Care Technologies Research Network (POCTRN) established several years ago by NIBIB. The network will use a flexible, rapid process to infuse funding and enhance technology designs at key stages of development, with expertise from technology innovators, entrepreneurs and business leaders across the country. POCTRN supports hundreds of investigators from multiple universities and businesses through five technology hubs:

Led by the Coordinating Center at CIMIT, the network has assembled expert review boards covering scientific, clinical, regulatory and business domains that will rapidly evaluate technology proposals. In order to roll out new products starting at the end of summer/fall 2020, a rapid, parallel process will allow quick throughput of projects. Projects will be assessed at each milestone and must demonstrate significant progress to receive continued support.

Brazils First Congress on Bioengineering: From Bioprinting in Agriculture to New Startups – 3DPrint.com

With more than 5,000 registered participants, the event was a local success. Also featured were panel discussions and presentations focusing on 3D modeling, biomaterials, hardware and software development, biomimetics, and nanotechnology in medicine and food.

Among the speakers and panelists at the virtual event, was opening keynoter Luciano Paulino da Silva, senior researcher of Embrapas Genetic Resources and Biotechnology division, focusing on nanobiotechnology applied to the fields of agriculture and biomedicine. Also the coordinator of the summit, Paulino da Silvas opening lecture focused on nano biofabrication, discussing everything from sustainable nanomaterials to the production of functional biostructures.

Paulino da Silva described the Brazilian bioprinting community as vibrant and eager for scientific and technological innovations in the field that would make it possible to go from the production of cellularized scaffolds for screening drugs and bioactives to the manufacture of organ mimetics and development of innovative bioprinters.

During the event, 3DPrint.com virtually caught up with Paulino da Silva to discuss how bioprinting research is advancing in Brazil. The expert asserted his enthusiasm as he discussed the future of the Brazilian 3D bioprinting community as an important contributor to the field. Yet, he also focused on some of the challenges that lie ahead for the countrys foremost researchers in bioprinting, especially the need for continuous support stemming from both public and private initiatives.

I am hoping to see more collaborative efforts not only between research institutions but also with companies. It would be great to establish partnerships in disruptive projects with multidisciplinary teams focused on reaching technological solutions that meet the real demands of the field, highlighted Paulino da Silva. Still, there is a need for more public and private investments, as well as access to inputs; but for that to happen, we need to make import processes easier from a regulatory standpoint.

Greater involvement in bioprinting research from private companies, most of them startups, as well as research institutions and academia, has led to an increase in the local development of bioprinters, innovative bioconstructs for cosmetics testing and substance screening, and production of advanced and smart bioinks with enhanced rheological features based on hydrogels. Researchers are also taking advantage of the natural resources from Brazils biodiversity, a great source for the development of maturogens and growth factors to advance maturation processes.

Embrapas Laboratory of Nanobiotechnology (LNANO), in Brasilia, has one of the best infrastructures and facilities for 3D bioprinting in the country, thanks to its five bioprinters and ongoing development of customized biofabrication techniques, including wet spinning and electrospinning. Additionally, researchers at LNANO are in the process of implementing a 3D/4D biofabrication platform for agriculture, which, Paulino da Silva claimed would be the first in the world.

Up until now, all we know about the project is that Embrapas researchers are close to structuring a platform that will fabricate agro-related products, such as artificial seeds and mimetics of insect pests. The results will help improve the quality and certification of agricultural products, biotechnology, agro energy, and provide new uses to the industry of fertilizers and pesticides, as well as innovation in food conservation and veterinary medicine. After all, agriculture in Brazil continues to be one of the principal bases of the economy, which is why this project is so relevant for the evolution of the industry.

Through the digital event, Embrape sought to bring a unique opportunity to connect, learn, and evolve, and ultimately deepen bioprinting expertise. CEOs, founders, and experts in some of the commercial developments throughout the region outlined commercial forecasts for the sector of bioengineering, discussed on-demand bioprinting technology, and the hurdles to providing affordable options in the region.

Featuring both new and familiar content, Gabriel Liguori, CEO and founder of the biotechnology startup TissueLabs, discussed how his company is preparing for the future of bioprinting by creating new equipment and tissue constructs, as well as how bioprinting availability is driving local development, for use in healthcare and personalized medicine.

The event was a great opportunity to share our work, but also to reach thousands of people who are not yet aware of the potential of 3D bioprinting. We also presented our recently launched 3D bioprinter TissueStart, which drew a lot of attention from summit attendees who said they were amazed by the technologies presented during the event. Alternatively, Allevis vice president of Life Sciences, Taciana Pereira, delved into the leading bioprinting companys production of bioinks. Originally from Curitiba, Brazil, Pereira worked at Harvards Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering before joining Allevi, where she leads research and development of applications and bioinks for 3D bioprinting. Pereira told 3DPrint.com that she always sought to make sure that her work in the United States also had a positive impact at home:

When I joined Allevi, I kept close communication with the Brazilian research community to enable the growth of 3D bioprinting. I remember speaking at a Latin American tissue engineering congress three years ago, back when this technology did not have so much presence in Brazil; however, since then, I have seen tremendous growth, not only as a part of research investigations but also in many related industries. This congress is so important for Brazilian science and I was ecstatic to see presentations from 3D bioprinting research groups and startups. Brazilians have so much grit and creativity that I am confident these projects will continue to advance and disrupt the global scenario.

The summit also explored other areas, including biofabrication techniques, 3D modeling for bioengineering, tissue engineering, in vitro development of skin mimetics, and nanotechnology applications in healthcare and agriculture, which has become a flashpoint in local debate.

Currently, there are three established bioengineering startups that manufacture bespoke low-cost bioprinting equipment for local researchers, including TissueLabs, 3D Biotechnology Solutions, and NanoDiversity in Sao Paulo, and Bioprint3D in Brasilia. However, according to Paulino da Silva, most of the major world manufacturers of bioprinters also have representatives in the country that provide local support to the dozens of labs and companies that have invested in the technology.

In the last four years, collaboration to generate bioprinting technologies has escalated. For example, Embrapas recent technical cooperation with Due Laser resulted in the development of a 3D bioprinter called Biomaker. Other tailor-made 3D bioprinters produced in collaboration with 3D Biotechnology Solutions were used to fabricate some of the most advanced bioconstructs ever made in the country for applications ranging from agriculture to veterinary medicine and biomedicine. However, Paulino da Silva hopes to see more joint efforts between research institutes and universities in order to take the countrys 3D bioprinting to the next level.

The Brazilian scientific community has many highly qualified professionals and undergraduate and graduate programs that train dozens of professionals every year, ready to join research projects and emerging startups. However, financial resources for projects are generally very limited, as are access to products from other countries, described Paulino da Silva. Here is were the creative spirit of our local scientists makes a big difference, as they are able to continue on the path of biofabrication in the midst of adversities.

The I CDNB was an excellent opportunity for professionals to interact with renowned researchers from Brazil. The event represented a milestone for the country, demonstrating progress in the development and adoption of bioprinting technologies, paving the way for the next edition of the congress in 2021.

Seton senior says her Catholic education prepared her for college and life – My catholic standard

As Lauren Gomes, a senior at Elizabeth Seton High School in Bladensburg, Maryland, reflects on her years in high school, she remembers how her Catholic education has shaped her character and helped prepare her to chase her dreams.

My private school education taught me that you shouldnt be afraid to make your dreams a reality, Gomes said. Seize the opportunities.

A graduate of St. Francis International School, an elementary and middle school in Silver Spring, Gomes said that when she entered Seton as a freshman, she was nervous after she placed in all honors courses. But she quickly excelled and got involved in numerous extra-curricular activities such as No Place for Hate, Model United Nations, economy club and art club, to name a few.

And when Gomes saw a gap in the clubs at her school, she created her own community a club named Its Academic where you didnt have to be an athlete or have a 4.0, she said.

During her many activities both inside the classroom and out, Gomes said she learned to never quit and to manage her time effectively. The college-prep education she received at Seton, she said, has helped her become a well-rounded individual with the ability to assess situations from all sides.

Theyre (Seton High School) not just college prep in the sense of academics, but also in work and service, Gomes said.

Gomes hasnt stopped preparing for college even during her summer vacations from school, from working as an assistant manager at Parkinson Construction Company to helping tutor children in her neighborhood and at a local elementary school in the ESOL program.

Attending a Catholic school, Gomes said, also has helped continue to cultivate her own personal faith life that had a strong foundation from her family at home.

In terms of my spiritual life, Catholic school education has definitely enhanced the previous spirituality I already had, Gomes said, adding that her parents escaped religious persecution of Catholics in Bangladesh when they came to the United States. They could finally be practicing Catholics without being afraid that their church might be demolished the next day or become invaded the next day, she said.

Setons motto The Light to Know and the Grace to Do means a lot to her, Gomes said, adding that both light and grace come from God.

Without (His light and His grace) we probably wouldnt get as far as we all are today, Gomes said.

One focal point of her attention throughout the past year has been human trafficking awareness outreach through a year-round community service project. Gomes has held numerous presentations at both St. Camillus Church in Silver Spring and at Elizabeth Seton High School. Through her educational and fundraising efforts, Gomes was amazed at the support she has received from her community.

Im definitely going to do outreach in college about human trafficking, she said, adding that she hopes to fight the organ trafficking arena with her work throughout her life. I want to completely remove the black market for human trafficking.

Gomes also traveled to area schools to educate and share resources about human trafficking and sponsored a Blue Tag day at school where students could donate funds to Free for Life International for the opportunity to wear blue on a designated school day. Free for Life International is an organization that fights human trafficking around the world.

This fall, Gomes plans to attend the University of Maryland, College Park with a bioengineering major and a potential neuroscience minor.

Researchers reveal structure of mega-enzymes from bacteria and fungi – Drug Target Review

Researchers have uncovered the structure of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), an important ingredient in drug production.

New research has allowed scientists to gain a better understanding of the structures of nonribosomal peptide synthetases (NRPSs), mega-enzymes taken from microbes like bacteria and fungi which are used in drugs.

A research team led by McGill University, Canada, used their findings to shed light on processes by which NRPSs work. According to the team, this study could potentially allow bacteria and fungi to be leveraged for the production of desired new compounds and lead to the creation of new potent antibiotics, immunosuppressants and other modern drugs.

NRPSs are really fantastic enzymes that take small molecules like amino acids or other similar sized building blocks and assemble them into natural, biologically active, potent compounds, many of which are drugs, saidMartin Schmeing, Associate Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at McGill University and corresponding author of the study. An NRPS works like a factory assembly line that consists of a series of robotic workstations. Each station has multi-step workflows and moving parts that allow it to add one building block substrate to the growing drug, elongating and modifying it and then passing it off to the next little workstation, all on the same huge enzyme.

In their paper, the team report visualising an NRPS mechanical system, through the use of the CMCF beamline at the Canadian Light Source (CLS). The CLS is a Canadian national lab that produces the ultra-intense beams of X-rays required to image proteins, as mega-enzymes are too small to see with any light microscope.

The researchers found that the NRPSs are made of adenylation and ketoreductase domain sequences, which are separated by residues that form a split pseudoAsub domain. They highlight that this is structurally important for the mega-enzymes synthetic cycle.

Scientists have long been excited about the potential of bioengineering NRPSs by identifying the order of building blocks and reorganising the workstations in the enzyme to create new drugs, but the effort has rarely been successful, said Schmeing. This is the first time anyone has seen how these enzymes transform keto acids into a building block that can be put into a peptide drug. This helps us understand how the NRPSs can use so very many building blocks to make the many different compounds and therapeutics.

The findings were published in the journal Nature Chemical Biology.
