A Reddit for Medical School Students.

Hope this provides a clear view into another attendings income and spending.

I am a hospitalist. I am 2 years out from completing residency. My wife is currently in fellowship.

My first year I made 315K living downtown of high cost of living city (Boston). My wife made 70K that year.We began my first job in total combined debt of 331K. At the end of this first year my wifes debt was erased and left with 191K remaining for me.

1st year combined household monthly pretax income: 32000

Monthly spending:Taxes: 11000Retirement (401k, IRA, HSA): 4500Rent, utlities, internet, phone, parking spot: 2600Food and entertainment: 610Health, car, renter insurance: 470Car maintenance/gas: 200Savings account contribution: about 800My student loans: 2819My wifes loans: 8854

My second year I changed jobs. I still live downtown of high cost of living city. I am 3 months into this new job. My current monthly pretax income is about 42000 a month (I am on pace to make 504000 over a year). My wifes annual income is still 70K

2nd year combined household monthly pretax income:47800

Monthly spending:Taxes: 18000Retirement (HSA, 401K, 457B, IRA): 6000Rent, utlities, internet, phone, parking spot: 4080Food: 2000Health, car, renter, umbrella insurance: 460Car maintenance/gas: 400New car lease: 1400My student loans: 9000Other (see below): 7200

Here are one time expenses made this second year so far, lumped into other (since they are not true monthly recurring expenses)5 day vacation trip: 6000New watch: 15600

Tl;drHuge lifestyle inflation from pent up delayed gratification occurred after the first year of living like a resident in poverty. Moved into a luxury highrise apartment. New car (BMW 7 series). Splurged on fine dining restaurants every few days/takeout, 15k watch, a vacation with super nice hotels.

Totally worth it.Taxes also suck a lot.
