Downton Abbey Season 4: Confirmed by ITV

With Downton Abbey Season 3 set to premiere in the U.S. on January 6, ITV has given fans of this British drama another reason to celebrate:

The network has announced an eight-episode fourth season, replete with a 2013 Christmas special. PBS is expected to air each one in the States, as it's done throughout the beloved run of this series so far.

“Viewers can look forward to more drama, comedy, love, hatred, jealousy, rivalry, ambition, despair and romance," on Season 4, said ITV Executive Producer Gareth Neame.

Creator Julian Fellowes and his entire team is on board for the new season, with production scheduled to commence in February.

Once Upon a Time Sneak Peeks: A Compass Conundrum

Following a Sunday off, what can fans expect when Once Upon a Time returns this week with "Into the Deep?"

The episode will feature a heavy dose of Cora, as she's intent on tracking down the mysterious compass and using it for her own nefarious purposes. Watch her confront Hook over its whereabouts in this sneak peek:

It also looks like Cora will come up with a plan to get what she wants. As teased below, it involves Aurora and Snow/Emma's well-meaning hearts:

Finally, in Storybrooke, David will devise a scheme of his own. It will also have a lot to do with Snow's heart, along with her lips, as he urges Mr. Gold to send him back into the slumber in which we first found him way back on the Once Upon a Time Season 1 premiere. See what we mean now:

Beauty and the Beast Episode Preview: "Trapped"

Vincent Keller is about to relive some painful memories.

On next Thursday's Beauty and the Beast, this veteran will allow JT to sedate him in order to prove determine the cause of his blackouts - which causes Vincent to think back to Afghanistan and the person who gave him his first DNA-altering injection.

Elsewhere, Cat and Tess will investigate the murder of a young pop star, while Evan wonders if Cat is protecting a certain vigilante.

Sons of Anarchy Round Table: "To Thine Own Self"

The pieces are aligning on Sons of Anarchy. Sides are being chosen. And the countdown is on for the Jax versus Clay showdown that's been building for two years.

Fresh off Thanksgiving, our TV Fanatic Round Table of Matt Richenthal, Christine Orlando, Carla Day and Dannii Priest (of Sons-of-Anarchy.net) are here to dissect "To Thine Own Self," debating the actions of Nero and wondering who will live to see Season 6...

What was your favorite scene from the episode?
Matt: I could probably use this as my answer every week, but everything involving Nero. His shooting of his old running buddies was shocking and bad ass, and then his breakdown with Gemma was simply heartbreaking. This guy rules.

Christine: Nero's breakdown when he saw Gemma and realized that turning back to the dark side was all for nothing. The emotions running through his eyes were really something to watch.

Carla: When Jax finally let Bobby and Chibs in on all the horrible things that Clay did. Jax's pain was difficult to see and their astonishment was refreshing. Jax has held all that in too long.

Dannii: Jax at the table telling everyone how he is getting them out of running drugs.

Should Bobby have issued a warning to Clay?
Matt: From who's perspective? Obviously the answer is no if you're Jax, but Bobby has always been the reasonable voice of SAMCRO. He's aghast at some of Jax's recent actions and above all else, I think he understands how damaging it would be to the club if Clay's secrets were exposed. The VP is just looking out for his family here.

Christine: I wish he hadn't but I understand why he did. These two have been friends a long time. He may want Clay to pay but he apparently doesn't want to see him killed.

Carla: Bobby should have kept his mouth shut. It wasn't his place to get involved. He is Jax's VP, not anyone else's.

Dannii: Absolutely not! Clay has made his dirty bed so now he needs to lie in it... six feet under!

More likely to die this season: Clay, Tig or Tara?
Matt: Forget what the SOA preview for next week's "Darthy" teases, there's no way Jax is handing Tig over to Pope. And I see Clay surviving until the final season at least. So that leaves Tara, whose death would set Jax off a dark path the likes of which is current mindset can't even comprehend.

Christine: That's a tough call. It should be Clay but the guy's got more than the proverbial nine lives. Tig's own rashness and downright stupidity could have easily earned him a bullet as well. I just hope it's not Tara. This show has too few female characters. Killing her off would leave a serious void.

Carla: Hmm ... any of them could die. Will Jax give up Tig to Pope? I'm not sure he'll have an option. So I guess I'll go with Tig. However, I'm sure there will be at least one surprise that will come up regarding that arrangement.

Dannii: I have to say Tig. Pope will not let this go, and when Jax asked Tig if he still loves him, it seemed like a goodbye.

Should Tara take that job in Providence?
Matt: Should Miles lost weight?!? Yes, yes, yes. A thousand times yes, Tara.

Christine: Absolutely, but doing it behind Jax's back was the wrong way to go. It can only come back to hurt her.

Carla: Not without talking - really talking - to Jax about it. Though, in that moment, I think she accepted because she thought it would starve off her Otto situation. It won't, but it gave her a sense of control.

Dannii: No, not without talking to Jax to see where he's at with it all! She could have talked to him again about it first. But she can always change her mind... right?

Do you feel bad for Nero?
Matt: Totally. Though I feel great for Sons of Anarchy viewers who have been fortunate enough to watch Jimmy Smits in this role all season long. Can we petition Kurt Sutter to pen a spinoff? The Companionator? Nero and Far? I'll keep working on the title.

Christine: Oh God, yes! The poor guy went all in to rescue the son of the woman he loves... only to find out it was completely unnecessary and then found her back with Clay. The horror on his face as it all sunk in was simply heartbreaking. I keep wishing that Gemma would tell him the truth.

Carla: Absolutely. He opened up a side of him that he had locked down and it turned out to be for nothing. Poor guy!

Dannii: YES! He has to sit back and watch what happens with Gemma and Clay, knowing Gemma loves him. And then having killed his own crew by mistake?!? I don't believe it is going to end pretty for Nero.

Castle Round Table: "After Hours"

Castle and Beckett had their hands full on "After Hours," as the couple ran for its life. But were they running from a mob enforcer or the calamitous meeting between their parents?

Our Round Table team of TV Fanatic staffers Carla Day, Jim Garner, and Christine Orlando are joined here by Castle fans Jenn and Jennifer from The 12th Fan Forum as they decide who was to blame for the dinner disaster and whether Castle and Beckett have what it takes to make Always a reality...

What was your favorite scene?

Carla: When the cop pointed out that Castle and Beckett could take the cab ... that was right there. A hilarious end to their crazy game of hide and seek, while trying to get out of the neighborhood.

Jim: Rick on the phone with the girl whose phone they had. Thought it was interesting she was more worried about her phone than the window in her car.

Jennifer: I would say my favorite scene is more a three way tie between, my two favorite funny moments: Castle disturbing the peace in order to get help at the apartment building and Kate busting in the car window for the cell phone and my favorite tender moment: their hug at the end.

Jenn: I really enjoyed the bickering throughout, but my favorite scene was near the end where with her hands bound Beckett races up to Castle and throws her arms over his head for an amazing hug. It that moment they didn't care who saw them, they were just filled with the relief that they still had each other. To me that one scene spoke volumes about their relationship.

Christine: Kate opening up about how concerned she is that they are from two different worlds. We've waited five seasons for them to share their feelings so I love it every time they actually TALK to one another and forgo all of the subtext.

Who started the fight, Jim or Martha?

Carla: If I learned anything from the episode it is that this is a question with no winning answer. So, I'll abstain!

Jim: Marth. Her distaste of baseball came through pretty quickly.

Jennifer: In the end I would say neither actually started the fight as no one went in there begging for one. It was more just one really bad comment and response after another until the whole dinner went south.

Jenn: Okay, even though Jim cast the first stone in the fight with the comment about Martha's cooking, I blame Castle because he is the one that even brought up his mother's cooking to begin with in the first place. Granted, a fight could have happened later in the dinner, but I guess we'll never know because of the pop fly that Castle hit out there.

Christine: She basically called him boring and he called her flighty. There's blame on both sides but I did love the way they came together at the end. Worrying over their kids connects their worlds.

Most surprising moment? Leo is the killer or the Sister schooling Esposito?

Carla: Leo being the killer. Who would have thought that actor would play two roles both on ABC (the other being on Scandal) within weeks where he was the bad guy pretending to be the victim. Typecast?

Jim: Knew the Sister was going to school Espy after he bragged about combat being worse. Leo being the hitman totally shocked me. Well played Leo.

Jennifer: Leo is the killer, hands down. In the end Esposito was a little too sure of himself, it came as no surprise he would learn his lesson fast.

Jenn: Most surprising moment was that no one realized that even though a cell phone is locked you can still dial an emergency number!  But I guess if they would have realized that then Leo aka "The Killer" could have gotten away. I was a little surprised about Leo, but I think Castle was more surprised than I was with that discovery.

Christine: Yes, Jenn! I kept thinking about the 911 thing too. Wouldn't a cop know that?  But Leo being the killer was something I didn't see coming. That said, Esposito and Ryan interviewing the Sister was hysterical.

Are Rick and Kate too different to last?

Carla: Nope. They are perfect for each other. Being different isn't a problem. If James Carville and Mary Matalin can make it work, then Rick and Kate's (seems weird to use their first names) won't be something that stands in their way. They may have issues, but it won't be because of their different backgrounds.

Jim: Not at all... they have differences sure, but they want the same things where it's really important.

Jennifer: They may be different, but that is what makes them great, where ones abilities ends the other makes up the difference. To borrow from Castle, they are yin and yang, perfect harmony, perfect balance.

Jenn: No, the fact that they do in a lot of ways come from two different worlds is what is going to keep them together for the long haul. She will continue to keep him grounded in the real world and he will continue to encourage her to have fun and take a chance on something once and awhile. Honestly these two have been through so much over the years that I really don't believe there is anything that could keep them apart.

Christine: Looks like it's unanimous. They might make one another crazy from time to time but these two were made for one another. They are obviously happiest and at their best when they are together.

This episode had some great lines. What was your favorite?

Carla: Castle: Dude, where's your car? That was a funny line and the event set the debacle into motion.

Jim: Rick's reply to Kate about being different: So what if we don't make sense on paper, we don't live our lives on paper.

Jennifer: Ryan's Not that I would ever doubt a nun.

Jenn: I'm torn with this one, but I'd have to say Castle with Dude, where's your car? First, I was having flashbacks to terrible movies, but then I was thinking, "Haha, Rick just called Kate dude."  I give this line credit because just like "Call Me Maybe" I can't get it out of my head. Martha calling Gates out was a close second.

Christine: Ryan's Catholic school is like combat. If you haven't been there, then you don't know. Esposito and Ryan were at their best. I love our boys.

The Vampire Diaries Clip: Making a Date

In our exclusive interview last week, Candice Accola said Caroline was "110%" behind Tyler and implied that Forwood would be just fine going, well, forward.

But then Caroline needed help from Klaus and agreed to go on a date with the Original, which didn't exactly sit too well with her formerly sired boyfriend.

What will this mean for the couple? We'll have to wait a few days for "My Brother's Keeper" to know for sure, but the following sneak peek gives hope to Klaroline fans everywhere, as Klaus takes Caroline up on her promise and the two make plans to attend the Miss Mystic Falls pageant together.

With some ground rules, that is. Watch the clip now and let the countdown to Thursday night begin...

I am absolutely loving friend, Observatory presenter, and resident genius/Guardian writer Oliver Burkeman's new book The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking. A kind of 200 page confutation of the accepted wisdom of "positive thinking" and other truisms of the self-help movement, it is also a terrific and witty introduction to a multitude of exceptionally wise philosophies whose tenants run counter to those ideas, from The Stoics to Buddhism to Mexican Day of the Dead. The result is a book which provides a persuasive argument for reviving the notion of the memento mori--objects or artworks whose function is to urge the beholder to contemplate the fact that they, too, will die--and which takes the unpopular stand that to be truly happy, to live a good and full life, we need to embrace, or at least learn to tolerate, negativity, uncertainty, and death. Ideas that, obviously, I strongly share.

From the Sacred Heart to the Profane: "Collector of Hearts," Morbid Anatomy Guest Post on The Newly Launched Wellcome Library Website

The kind of research that I am drawn to tends to focus on things that reside at tricky intersections, or have fallen though the historical cracks. The incredibly broad and multi-disciplinary collection of the Wellcome Library — one that gives equal primacy to the highbrow contemporary academia, forgotten ephemera, art, artifacts, outdated science, and outsider scholarship — makes this the perfect library for the sort of research I do, and allows for all manner of idiosyncratic research that would simply be impossible to conceive of at more conventional libraries.

Today, that spectacular and unrivaled resource The Wellcome Library launched a brand new, image-intensive website; as part of the relaunch, I was asked to write a guest post about my "user experiences" in the library over a series of visits on my recent trip to London.

In the post--excerpted above, full post here--I use as a point of departure the randomly stumbled upon and utterly amazing book From Holy Pictures to the Healing Saints: Faith and the Heart. In it, author, doctor and collector N. Boyadjian’s showcases and muses on his wonderful and vast assortment of ‘holy pictures,’ also known as ‘prayer cards,’ or small popular pictures used in “individual intimate devotion” (see top 5 images). Using that book and its chapter on "The Sacred Heart" as a departure point, I then delved into all aspects of the Wellcome Library and Image Collection--digital and print, rare and every day--to ferret out the variety of ways in which the human heart has been approached from the sacred and secular, the symbolic to the medical.

In this fashion, I discovered a dizzying array of curiosities showcasing the depth a breadth of The  Wellcome Library and Collection; just a very few of my favorites: an illustration of "A most true and certaine relation of a strange monster or serpent found in the left ventricle of the heart of John Pennant, gentleman, of the age of 21 yeares" (7th down);  a Carmelite scapular; a theatrical-framed illustration of the "Heart, illustrated as a pumping machine" from 1733; "The vivisector asked to choose between head and heart" from 1886; a dried and preserved human tattoo depicting a sacred heart (9th down); a print of of an anatomist examining the heart of suspiciously beautiful female cadaver ("She Had a Heart," 1890) (6th down); and, perhaps my favorite, a painting of souls in purgatory looking at the wounds of christ (8th down).

One of the times that medical illustrators get to be truly creative is with medical editorial illustrations.  Whether it’s for the cover of a medical journal/magazine or an article, editorial illustrations combine scientific accuracy with artistic license. They are the true bridge between medical illustration and anatomical art.

These editorial medical illustrations are by Alexandra Baker who is one half of DNA Illustrations, Inc., a biomedical visualization company specializing in custom concept illustrations for editorial and advertising use.  Alexandra received her M.S. Medical Illustration degree from the Medical College of Georgia and has over 20 years of experience as a freelance medical illustrator.
