UC ERM Toolbox February 2013 - Anatomy of a Waiver
Waivers are binding legal documents that can be used to protect an institution from liability for the myriad of activities that are offered to students, faculty, staff and the general public. But not all waivers are alike, and in many instances, the waiver that you think is iron-clad is illegal, void, and not worth the paper it is written on. Learn what a waiver is, when it can and can #39;t be used, the requirements of an "iron clad" waiver, and recommended retention periods, mixed in with interesting case studies and examples.

Anatomy of a comeback: How the Patriots pulled off a historic victory
The Boston Globe
No team in Super Bowl history had overcome a deficit greater than 10 points, let alone the mountainous 25-point deficit the Patriots faced in Super Bowl LI when they fell behind the Falcons, 28-3, in the third quarter on Sunday in Houston. But on their ...

Jorge Garcia to Play Investigator on CBS Pilot

Another Lost star is on his way to CBS.

With Michael Emerson anchoring Person of Interest and Josh Holloway signing on for Intelligence, we can confirm that Jorge Garcia has joined the cast of The Ordained.

The actor - who has appeared on Alcatraz, Californication, How I Met Your Mother and Once Upon a Time since his ABC smash went off the air - will star on the new drama as a law firm private investigator.

A Giant in Town

His character will work at the same company as the son of a political family who exits the priesthood and becomes an attorney in order to prevent his sister from being assassinated.

The assassination plot is part of a large conspiracy.

No word yet if Garcia has asked Archie Panjabi for tips on how to best investigate the cases of a major law firm.

Blue Bloods Review: Daddy Dearest

As much as there was nothing technically wrong with tonight's Blue Bloods, there was nothing stellar about "Quid Pro Quo" either as I found it to be one of the most boring episodes of the season.

The Basketball Incident

Erin and Danny teamed up to try and solve a cold case after the murder victim's father implored Erin for help.  As much as I applauded their persistence, the investigation felt flawed at many turns.

It was hard to believe that a company would keep 15 year old signature manifests on file. Having Erin do her own undercover work should have had some sense of danger to it but I never felt she was in any peril.

Then, having she and Danny hunt down their suspected killer together leaving Erin as his only armed backup seemed silly. Yes, as an ADA I'm sure she might carry a gun and as a Reagan I'm positive she'd know how to use it but it all felt more like a contrived plot point in an attempt to build up drama and it just didn't work for me.

Frank and Garrett were at odds once again and didn't it feel like we've been down this road before?

I enjoyed the quote Garrett wrote about Frank in an opposition piece but this felt like just one more story to find a wedge to put between these two men, only to bring them back together once again. As Garrett told Frank in this Blue Bloods quote

Garrett: I don't know about you but I've had enough honesty for one week. | permalink

Jamie and Danny's basketball game went all wrong as Jamie's friend was an ass and got a broken nose for not knowing when to keep his mouth shut.  Of course an elbow to the gut could have shut him up too and possibly avoided charges and a possible law suit.

Also, I could be wrong but would two assault charges 15 years apart really warrant serious bail and time at Rikers Island?  If that's the case I'd think they'd have to build a whole new wing for all of the punches thrown in NYC.

For once we saw Danny openly proud of his brother and Jamie accepting it without question but the reason seemed a bit silly.  I know Danny was relieved for his friend but if Jamie had better friends perhaps this never would have happened. It might have felt more interesting if Jamie and Danny had been on opposite sides of this argument from the start

Even the Reagan family dinner felt too short and without any real fun or drama and as it's usually my favorite scene of the show I was disappointed.

Here's to hoping for better Blue Bloods next time.

Pretty Little Liars Round Table: "Hot Water"

This week on Pretty Little Liars, Ashley decided to wipe Wilden off the map, Wren made a pass at Spencer and Melissa was once again exposed as knowing a lot more than she let on.

Get comfy, pull up a virtual chair and join staff writers Leigh Raines, Christina Tran, Teresa Lopez, Nick McHatton, and Carissa Pavlica as they discuss all these topics and more at the "Hot Water" Round Table.

----------------------------------

Paige did have something to hide after all. Will it change things between her and Emily?
Leigh: Eh, I don't think Paige's secret was that big of a deal. Obviously if she just called the girl up out of nowhere and asked for info about the costume Shana would've told her to peace. That's why she had the drinks first. As far as lies on this show, it's fairly minor.

Teresa: I don't think it will change things between Emily and Paige, but I think Emily's secrets might.  Plus I think we still have more to learn about Paige's past.

Christina: No, Paige's secret definitely wasn't a big deal. These two have been through way worse. They'll be fine.

Nick: There's still something off about Paige (fits of trashcan-throwing rage!), but this doesn't change anything between them. It plays up Paige's over-protectiveness/jealousy for Emily.

Carissa: I agree with Nick and Teresa. I think there is a bit more to Paige's story that's left to uncover, but whether it's relationship altering remains unseen. As do half of the other secrets in Rosewood!

PLL RT LOGO

Spencer and Wren: is it for real or a manipulation of some sort?
Leigh: I think Wren goes after all vulnerable young girls. Spencer, Hanna, who's next? We know he's always had a thing for Spencer.

Teresa: I just don't think Wren is really genuine in his attraction to any of the girls. It seems like when Hanna was spending all that time at Radley, he was there to distract her. Same thing with Spencer and Toby. But if not, that's creepier than Ezra and Aria since he seems to prefer high school girls.

Christina: Manipulation, for sure. Wren has always been creepy to me. Why is he always trying to get with young girls?! Not everyone can pull an Ezra.

Nick: As much as I would like it to be real just about everything Wren has done is weird or manipulative in some way. Spencer is just trying to give payback to Toby in any outlet she can, and Wren happens to be the first person she found that she can do so with.

Carissa: I've always wondered just what Wren really does. Is he a clinician, a doctor or what? If he's a doctor, he's a lot older than he let's on, and his attraction to the young girls is all kinds of wrong. Regardless, he should a better gauge of professionalism than Ezra due to his training, and even if he doesn't realize it, he's manipulating Spencer by using medical reasons to enter, leave and re-enter her life. Creepy factor for sure.

Ezra is back, with mama in tow and she's out to squash Ezria. What will be the first thing to put a rift between them: a homeless Maggie or the untold Kiss with Wesley?
Leigh: Homeless Maggie. It's what has come up so far and Mrs. Fitzscary even pointed out how Aria would become less important in his life with Maggie and his son now in the picture.

Teresa: I really hope Maggie has to move in with Ezra. It might make Aria see that Ezra has other priorities.

Christina: Ezria really can't catch a break. I say Maggie moves in first then the untold kiss crushes these two even more.

Nick: Fitzscary is just a terrible person. First she hides Ezra's kid then throws the little guy out of his home just so she can try to break up her son's relationship with Aria. She has no qualms about making her own grandchild collateral damage in her quest for domination over her family. So, obviously, homeless Maggie is the first rift.

Carissa: Five for five! What's worse is I think the pressure of Maggie being with Ezra could make the news of the kiss somehow tumble from the lips of Aria herself. Wouldn't that be awful?

What do you think will happen to Ashley, especially with the video evidence? Will it help or hurt, or will the Marin Chicks get it before it gets into the wrong hands?
Leigh: Oh, the Marin chicks are goin' down. They are so screwed right now. Where's the body? How stupid was Ashley? I guess I kinda wanted to run him over too...

Teresa: I think this might end up as another A secret that gets used against Hanna. Let's hope she isn't forced to eat a bunch of cupcakes this time!

Christina: Could you really blame Ashley?! I think A has the video evidence and will once again use it to mess with Hanna.

Nick: I'm sure A has gotten the recording and will use it to manipulate Hanna. Way to screw this up Sydney! I mean, Ashley.

Carissa: I really wanted Ashley to run him down. I admit it. But I wish she had turned to the camera and acted hurt and screamed for help first, and then as she ran for the car...just a little acting. She does it so well, why didn't she turn it on? Everyone knows cop cars have cameras now. Right? I was wondering if they introduced Caleb's dad because Ashley will be spending time in jail and Hanna will need a place to stay...

Melissa is back as an A suspect. Was she the A who steamed Spencer?
Leigh: Melissa has always been suspicious. If she's on the A Team she probably knows that Toby is too. One of them did it for sure.

Teresa: Maybe. Toby and Melissa both had a reason to punish Spencer for kissing Wren.

Christina: I don't think it was Melissa. My bet is on Mona. However, where the heck was she?!?

Nick: If I were Spencer I would be okay with dying in a super luxurious steam shower; however, I doubt the steamer is Melissa.

Carissa: Oh gosh. Listening to you guys I had a horrible thought. What if Melissa and Toby have been carrying on? Ewwww. She would get the info to Toby who would carry out the act on his ex. Stranger things have happened in that little town!

Mark Pellegrino Joins Cast of The Tomorrow People

Mark Pellegrino is adding yet another line to his resume.

The very busy actor (Lost, Supernatural, Person of Interest, Being Human) is the latest name to be added to The Tomorrow People cast, as Deadline reports Pellegrino will portray a biologist looking to contain this group of superhuman individuals.

His character of Dr. Jedikiah Price believes they are a threat to regular folks on Earth, much like the opposition to The X-Men.

Mark Pellegrino as Bishop

The Tomorrow People is based on a British series and will also star Luke Mitchell, Peyton List and Robbie Amell.

It will be produced by Julie Plec (The Vampire Diaries) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow).

Once Upon a Time Considering Mad Hatter Recast, Spinoff

Unexpected and potentially excited news tonight out of ABC and Once Upon a Time:

According to Deadline sources, the series will bring back the Mad Hatter for an episode later in Season 2.

HOWEVER, the role would be recast because the network is considering a spinoff involving the character and Sebastian Stan is unavailable for such a commitment.

Sebastian Stan on Once Upon a Time

The Mad Hatter grew into one of the show's more popular recurring players during his handful of appearances, but it's hard not to wonder if that was due to the character or Stan's portrayal of him.

Would a new actor catch on in the same fashion? Enough to build an entire series around him?

Insiders say the new actor would be brought on as a guest star with a series option in the contract, similar to deals made with Emile de Ravin and Meghan Ory.

So what do you think, Once Upon a Time fanatics? Can you imagine anyone other than Stan as the Hatter? Would you want to see such a spinoff? And which actor would you cast in it?

Nikita Review: Will Division’s History Repeat Itself?

Amanda returned with a masterful and vengeful plan in "Black Badge.

After a way too long hiatus, Nikita season 3 returned with an epic hour that put one of their own in harm's way. While Sean may not have been officially part of Division, he was a member of the team in the way that mattered the most: in their hearts. While the old Division discarded the damaged, the loved and those who made errors, as Nikita pointed out to Ryan, the new Division was different.

They wouldn't leave Sean out to take the fall for something he didn't do. Also, they didn't force him into a new, secret life either. He had a choice, took it, and officially became a Division recruit saved from the law and given a new life.

Nikita's Plan

Amanda was always diabolical. She enjoyed the power of Division, torturing recruits, and the nefarious side of the business. She's been manipulative, but not unbeatable until now. This time, she put together a plan that was masterful and stayed steps ahead of the new Division team from start to finish. She used the mission of the new Division against itself to take Sean's life as he knew it.

What initially appeared to be a government leak to a CIA analyst, Naomi, was much more than it appeared. It was the first step in Amanda's elaborate plan to assassinate Kendrick and blame it on Sean. It wasn't clear if she actually wanted Division outed as an illegal arm of the government or not, but Ryan and Nikita were able to protect that secret at least.

When Division figured out that Amanda was going after Kendrick, they put together a plan to protect him and all seemed good until the car exploded. They didn't account for it being an inside job. That's where Amanda won this battle. She implicated Sean with the altered video footage and sent the team searching for the real guy on the street. Even after they realized he was just a common criminal, they didn't pursue the inside traitor.

They followed the clues that Amanda left for them, which gave her the time to further set up Sean with a faked motive, while protecting her inside source. I never saw the reveal that Naomi was working with Amanda coming. Nice job, writers!

Watching Amanda's plan unfold was a highlight of the episode and only outdone by the action packed fight between Nikita and Naomi. That was outstanding fight choreography, right up there with the best on television right now on Arrow. Nikita's move to distract Naomi with the comment of the shoes worked well. And, after putting a knife in Naomi's chest, Nikita took those shoes as a fight prize.

Did Amanda ultimately win? Tough call. She did get away with killing Kendrick and ruined Sean's life, so I'd count that as a victory that was only slightly incomplete. Amanda's lesson that every operative is disposable went against everything that Nikita and Ryan are trying to accomplish. And, Amanda failed in her teaching.

Sean has a tough road ahead of him now that he has left his family and career behind. And, as a Navy SEAL it will be difficult for him to continue knowing he "died" with the world believing he was a killer and traitor. He never wanted to work at Division because he didn't believe in it, but now he is stuck there presumably forever. At least he has Alex, but will she be enough?

As much as Ryan and Nikita believe they are running a new Division, it is still an illegal arm of the government. Most of the people working there are "dead" and the assignments they will be given are unofficial. It's a slippery slope and the new Division gets closer to the edge every day. Amanda failed at her lesson today, but how long before that lesson is learned? Or will Ryan and Nikita be able to keep their power in check and say no to an operation if it is outside the lines of what they deem ethical?

What may look like the energetic lines of an artist sketching with a pen, is actually the work of Illinois-based artist Sung Jang who uses hair as his medium.

Jang began studying the possibilities of hair as a drawing medium in 2005 and says that,

Posses a peculiar duality: a duality of beauty and waste. It is something beautiful and alive, yet, when detached form the head, it instantly loses its value. It then becomes an insignificant object, nothing more than messy garbage. Creating images with the “fallen” hair, I tried to bring it back to an object of life.
Aside from the symbolism, Hair shows certain qualities as an object. It is a precisely thin line with graceful curves. I am exploring the possibilities of hair as a drawing medium. –sung-jang.com

Jang is currently an Adjunct Professor a The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Illinois Institute of Technology. View more of his work at sung-jang.com.

Sung Jang’s work will be presented at our upcoming gallery show, Dissecting Art, Intersecting Anatomy: Merging Contemporary Art with the Works of Pauline Lariviere, opening March 9th, 2013 in Chicago.
