Covert Affairs Set Visit: Piper Perabo on Auggie and Annie, Secrets on Season 4

Having already posted chats with Christopher Gorham and Peter Gallagher from our Covert Affairs set visit earlier this summer, now it's time to turn to the main star of this USA Network hit.

What sort of Season 4 intel can this actress declassify for us?

First, she sounded off on the long-awaited consummation of the Annie and Auggie relationship and whether or not it met her preconceived expectations.

“It’s been like years in the making, that love scene. And I never actually thought it would happen at Annie’s house because Annie’s like above the garage apartment and it's not the romantic thing that I imagine their first love scene would be... For all my dreams of romance, I was like I’ll bet they’re in Bali... then they’re in Annie’s garage apartment. But it was still really fun and cool."

What was it like actually shooting the scene with Gorham?

“Well [Chris and I] knew it was coming because of the kiss at the end of [Covert Affairs Season 3]. We’re like, 'either the garage apartment explodes or we have sex.' It was gonna be one of those two things... I know Chris really well and because it’s television and it’s a certain kind of cable you know you can only show so much, so it does get super technical.  It’s so not a romantic answer it gets so technical about can you use your elbow to cover my boob and if I roll over I’m sorry... there’s just so many details! But it’s easier with an actor that you know really well.”

We’ve seen in past seasons that it’s not easy to date Annie Walker. And if that opening sequence in the Covert Affairs Season 4 premiere was any indication, things aren’t made any easier when your love interest is your handler and best friend.

“It’s like impossible to date Annie Walker because she’s constantly [on the move]. There’s an early episode where [Auggie] planned to have a romantic date and she has to leave…and although she’s flying cross country, not every person in the world is flying off to a country to assassinate somebody. [At the same time the idea that] your partner plans a beautiful dinner or date and your work is important and you have to be there is a real thing and I think that’s cool and Auggie does a good job of managing it.  He finds ways around it.”

With Arthur’s resignation and now Joan replacing him as the head of DCS, how does the Annie and Auggie relationship change?

"The resignation happens and the ground starts shifting. So keeping your secrets keeps you safe, and keeps the person you love safe, so the whole thing starts shifting under their feet as why he resigned comes out.”

Perabo teases that there’s a lot more to learn about Auggie and Arthur’s past together: “It’s so awesome that Arthur knows [Auggie’s secrets]… it’s all tied together and that Arthur knows things about Auggie - big dark things - that Annie doesn’t know, and how Annie finds out are all are a lot about what the season’s about.”

With Joan at the helm, “she becomes this person that is very on the inside with Annie and Auggie. Her being pregnant, although it has nothing to do with them literally, there’s a sort of trust there or a sort of like mother bird of the whole agency [and] she is one of the people that knows everything and it makes sense that then she’s the head of [Annie and Auggie].”

We already saw that mother hen side come out when she facilitated the cover-up of Joan’s sponsor's death at Annie’s, which took place in last week’s installment.

And if you needed any more reasons to get in front of your television for Covert Affairs this summer, Perabo let us in on the things she’s most excited for fans to see:

“It’s getting deeper and darker and heavier and the missions are the stakes are higher. It was really interesting to do a rookie season for season one… now that I have as much experience as Annie Walker does, I want to do more action, bigger car chases.”

Jim’s Notebook: The Originals, The Blacklist, Dallas and More!

It’s hard to describe the two-week long Television Critics Association Press Tour, which is going on now through August 8th in Los Angeles.

But, just so you know, it’s a flurry of new television show panels, one-on-one interviews and parties where you try to chat with as many actors, network executives and producers as possible about their respective shows.

A few have stood out so far since the TCAs started last week and so I empty out this Notebook with some insight into both the new (The Blacklist, The Originals and Hostages) and returning (Dallas) programs that I know I’m excited about...

THE BLACKLIST The much-anticipated NBC series features James Spader as the FBI's Most Wanted, who turns himself in and helps the organization find other baddies. But the one hitch is that he will only talk with Megan Boone’s new agent.

While part of the mystery of the show will be why Spader’s Red Reddington is drawn to Boone’s Elizabeth Keen, Producers Jon Bokenkamp and John Eisendrath had to first get the casting right: “We were very close to not being able to push in the pilot and not getting it done,” Eisendrath told me of how Spader signed on at the eleventh hour, while Bokenkamp added: “Spader has a very strange sense of humor and a presence that, frankly, wasn’t in the script that has started to inform who the character is.”

As for Keen, Boone brought what the producers felt the role needed and that showed in her audition. “I remember in the audition,” Bokenkamp recalled. “Megan stopped three times and [physically shakes hands and head] and started over and I was like, ‘Wow, okay, I guess we’re just kind of going on her ride’ and, warts and all, you just get it. I think there’s something very endearing about that.”

And, yes, while there might seem to be a Silence of The Lambs similarity to the set up, I can tell you from watching the pilot that it definitely is its own journey. (The Blacklist premieres September 23 on NBC.)

THE ORIGINALS If you took one thing from the episode of The Vampire Diaries that introduced The Originals, it was the handsome and sexy Charles Martin Davis. While it will undoubtedly be interesting to see how his character of Marcel keeps control over New Orleans when we all know Klaus likes to rule the roost, I asked Davis if he’s ready for those CW-requisite shirtless scenes.

“I mean, you’ve got to own it,” former model said, all smiles. “I’ve had to take my shirt off for commercial casting. There’s a commercial of me in a hot tub. With modeling you just kind of take your shirt off, take your pants off, put on a new outfit in front of people and go and do the thing. It’s not sexualized... I’m okay with my body and I’m not shy about it as far as a job.” (The Originals premieres October 3 on The CW.)

HOSTAGES With shows like The Following and Homeland, we’re used to seeing unexpected twists and turns in both plot and character. Will we find the same thing with the upcoming CBS drama starring Toni Collette and Dylan McDermott?

“We're trying to keep the show as credible as possible, and real as possible,” Executive Producer Rick Eid told me. “The trick with a conspiracy show is you can turn over every card, and he's in on it, and he's in on it, and Godzilla. Before you know it, everybody in America is in on this conspiracy. So we're trying to have limits, have integrity to the show and not just when you think this is a family, they're from Mars.” 

That said, don’t expect to trust everything you see in the first episode: “There will be big twists and turns,” Eid explained. “And there’ll be things we didn't see. It's fair to say that the family is as presented because we look at it as really as a family drama masquerading as a big geo-political thriller. That's really important to the show, it's the family dynamic and the relationships and their issues. (Hostages premieres September 23 on CBS.)

DALLAS Remember that great scene last season when Bobby finally laid into Ann for keeping secrets? I asked Strong at the recent Turner 25th Anniversary Party how they did that scene when it’s known what a joker Duffy is on set. 

“Here’s the thing,” Strong said. “Patrick will joke right up until its time not to joke. Then, he’s all business but he respects the work so much that he will never try to take you off your game during a scene. As soon as the scene is over and we’re moving on, we’re laughing again. He’s very respectful of the process. He’s absolutely a pro.”

She added about her co-star: “[Patrick] was brilliant in that scene and the reactions were so authentic and it was just the only reason we did it more than once is because we had to cover the scene. He was absolutely prepared emotionally for it and it literally took the breath out of my chest because he was so good.” (To find out what’s coming in 2014 when season 3 launches, check out the Dallas Season 3 scoop filed earlier this week).

In an untelevised ceremony tonight, the Television Critics Association handed out hardware to stars such as Tatiana Maslany and shows such as Breaking Bad.

Bones Season 9 Spoilers: Wedding Bells and Big Bads

We still have until September 16 until the premiere of Bones Season 9.

But last night at the Fox TCA party in West Hollywood, I grabbed some time with creator Hart Hanson and star David Boreanaz to gather up some scoop on what’s to come.

With so many people fearful about what the evil Christopher Pelant has in store next for our team, Hanson leaked to me that Pelant may not be the worst the Jeffersonian team has ever seen. Asked if there would be another big bad once Pelant is taken care of, Hanson told me exclusively:

“There is another big bad on the horizon. No one’s asked me about this yet. Pelant, in his own way, uncovers another big bad. Perhaps [Pelant is] not the worst guy who’s ever lived.

But the good news is that even though Booth broke the heart of Brennan on the Season 8 finale to actually save her from Pelant (though, per Pelant’s instructions, he couldn’t tell her that), the twosome won’t be apart for long. In fact, they’re headed for the one place we’ve all been waiting for.

“Last year I think our little theme we had for season 8 is ‘Is Love Enough?’” said Hanson. “And this season the answer is ‘Yes, it is!’ Doesn’t mean things go easily but a lot of things that people have been waiting for years will happen in season 9. They are going to get married. That’s going to happen.”

And before you naysayers say it’s going to happen anywhere but in real space and time, Hanson already had a clarification ready:  “Everyone say ‘In a dream?’ No. Booth and Brennan are going to get married. I hope we do it in a way that surprises people and not when they expect it. We’ve been setting up needs in our audience for years and it’s time to pay off a bunch and if we’re going into season 10, which is a distinct possibility, we’ve got to set up new things.”

While Hanson was mum about when in Season 9 the wedding would take place, he did say that it’s an event that takes him and the writers into unchartered territory.

“There’s a version of this series where them getting married would be the end of the series,” he said. “That’s not going to be the case. It just means that a bunch of people had to sit and go ‘where do we go post-wedding’ and much to our surprise, all the writers are excited and interested.”

Unlike Hanson, Boreanaz admitted to never having looked into the future too far anytime during the show’s life:

“I never thought of how to wrap up the series. I never thought of how to wrap up the first episode of the first season. Obviously I work very much in the moment. Hart will tell you that, Emily will tell you that. ‘Okay, here we are, We’re shooting this scene now, we’re shooting that scene tomorrow.’ I don’t look forward to the reminiscence of the past and I don’t look to the future to see how it unfolds. So many things change and things get switched around. For me it’s in the moment, always has been.”

Boreanaz did tell me some of the other stories coming besides that of Pelant: “We have undercover work next week and that’s always good times. Tony and Roxy are coming back, we haven’t seen them in awhile. I know we’re going to a couples retreat, I know that. I know we’ll be dealing with some other stuff from Booth’s past, aka his priest friend that we meet in the first episode and Mather [Zickel] plays that and some work with the CIA. There’ll be some good stuff with Booth this year.”

Speaking of guest stars, it has been previously announced that Zickel and Freddie Prinze, Jr. would be appearing on the series -but Hanson confirmed to me that each actor would be around for multiple episodes, at least three each.

With no end in sight for the popular show, I asked Hanson what the key to the longevity of the beloved crime drama was and he quickly pointed to his two stars, Boreanaz and Deschanel: “I think one of the magic things in Bones is how well those two actors get along because you cannot…I don’t think there’s any other couple of actors who after this amount of time take joy in working with each other the way they do. That’s the engine. If they were starting to not have a thing, that would be disastrous for us. I give them full credit for keeping it going.”

Hanson and Boreanaz also wanted to make sure people know that they have no plans to stop the series at season nine. Said the former: “There’s a persistent rumor out there that season nine is our last. It could be, we don’t know but there’s no plans for it to be.”

Finally, back to Pelant. Boreanaz told me he’d just finished shooting the first episode of the season and when asked if he had any scenes face-to-face with Pelant, he answered, “No, not yet.” Asked if that would come soon, he replied, “I’m sure it will and I’m sure it’s not going to end very well.”

Castle Scoop: A Saved by the Bell Parody, The Return of Beckett?

Quick, someone get Antonio Sabato Jr. a giant cell phone.

The veteran actor - whose primetime appearances over recent years includes stops by NCIS, Hot in Cleveland and Rizzoli & Isles - will guest star on the third episode of Castle Season 6.

As someone who sounds a great deal like Zack Morris. Yes, that Zack Morris.

According to TV Guide, Sabato will portray Ramon Russo, the former star of a 1990s sitcom called 2 Cool for School.

When the cast of that series reunites for a film and the actor behind its Screech-like character turns up dead, Rick, Ryan and Esposito will have a few question's for Russo... until, the report claims, "a familiar face returns to lead the investigation."

Did it just give away that Castle does, indeed, leave for D.C. and then make her way back to New York?

Castle Season 6 premiere on September 23 at 10/9c.

"It is a Great Art to Die Well" : Memorial Rings at Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum

The distribution of rings to friends and family in memory of the dead dates back to the thirteenth century.

By the seventeenth century, specially made rings were engraved with the name of the deceased, their age, and the date of death. These 'mourning rings' took on various forms depending on the fashion of the age. Their distribution dwindled in the nineteenth century following the invention of the photograph as an alternative keepsake.

The macabre sixteenth- and seventeenth-century 'Memento Mori' (remember that you will die) rings were intended to remind the wearer of their mortal state in an age ridden with plague, war, and famine.

London based street artist Shok Oner, took his iconic x-ray spray style and actually made an x-ray! I’ve been waiting for him to do this for a while and hope he continues to do more skeletal work. I had the opportunity to meet Shok in London a couple of years ago to chat about his work. He’s been doing street art since 1984 and, needless-to-say, has a lot of experience and opinions on street art.

“A simple, domestic love story about a man who takes his skin off for his girlfriend, and why it probably wasn’t the best idea…”

‘He Took His Skin Off For Me’ is an adaptation of the original short story by award-winning writer Maria Hummer. It is ultimately a story about the sacrifices we make for the person we love and the trouble we encounter when the sacrifices become one-sided. Director Ben Aston and Maria Hummer have turned to Kickstarter to find funding for their vision, one that looks like it could be visually stunning. While they’ve reached their minimum goal of £7,000, they still need more to push the production further!

SYNOPSIS

“Is this what you want? he asked, and I said yes, so he took his skin off for me.”

He hangs the loose skin in the closet and comes downstairs to join his girlfriend at the dinner table. This whole thing seems like a good idea.  He’s become what she always wanted him to be.

But it’s not all perfect.

It’s the small things. The stains. She has to wash the sheets every day. At night he gets cold, so they have to turn up the heat. This means more bills. And gas isn’t cheap…

In fact, money is more of a problem than ever. He’s losing clients at work and they begin to fight about it. She tells him they’re the wrong clients anyway.

Old friends come over for dinner, but the party does not go well. He is quiet and withdrawn. The house is covered in stains – more than she can possibly clean.

They stop talking. The silence is deafening. She begins to worry that he resents her.

He does.

UCL Institute of Archaeology, 1-3 November 2013

Haunted ruins, cursed artefacts, arcane rituals and ambulant mummies:archaeology and the ancient world have provided some of the most effective andubiquitous scenarios for tales of horror and the supernatural. Authors andfilmmakers such as MR James, Bram Stoker and Terence Fisher have drawnheavily upon popular conceptions of both the ancient past and the work of the archaeologist.

This conference aims to study and celebrate this long and productive relationship. We are keen to hear from scholars and aficionados of the fictional world of uncanny archaeology including archaeologists, historians, writers and artists. The programme will include all genres where the ancient meets the ghastly including music, television, literature, film, and art. The conference will be held at UCL on 1-3 November 2013.

Congress for Curious People, London Edition, August 29th to September 8th: Save the Date(s)!!!

In just a few weeks, Morbid Anatomy and our partners--Strange Attractor, UCL's Preserved! and The Coney Island Museum--will be launching the second annual London edition of the Congress for Curious Peoples. This year's Congress has the theme “Spectacular Cultures," and will present a variety of lectures, performances, open houses and tours at at a number of underseen curious venues around London with the aim of entertaining, delighting, amazing, educating and opening up discussion about the nature of spectacle and the spectacular.

The Congress will end in a two-day symposium on “Reclaiming Spectacle”, which will include panels of academics, museum professionals, rogue scholars and artists discussing the intricacies of collecting the spectacular, the politics of bodily display, non-human spectacles, religion and the occult. In conjunction with the events The Horse Hospital will host "Ethel Le Rossignol: A Goodly Company" an exhibition of stunningly beautiful channelled psychic artworks painted in the 1920s by the largely unknown medium and artist.
