Highlanders versus Dynamos: The anatomy of violence – NewsDay

Once again and not for the last time a Highlanders versus Dynamos football match ended in violence with the usual accusations and counter accusations of referee bias and oppression being the order of the day.

Candour: NQABA MATSHAZI

NQABA MATSHAZI

Highlanders fans are convinced there is a conspiracy against their team and have long noticed what they consider a pattern that referees are biased against them and playing against Dynamos is increasingly becoming a fruitless endeavour, as Bosso is handicapped even before the match begins.

On the other hand, Dynamos supporters question why Highlanders fans seem to always resort to violence when things do not go their way, which in the end will cost their team monetarily and ultimately the match.

While these are arguments that can go on until the cows come home, the reality is they are superficial and do not address the cause of the hostility between the supporters of the two teams.

The violence between the two sets of the teams supporters, I argue, is a microcosm of the countrys failure to unite and there is a clear tribal and regional schism, which finds expression during matches between Dynamos and Highlanders.

The build-up to the matches is often couched in tribal terms and is seen as a battle between the Shona and the Ndebele on one hand and while on the other, Dynamos is seen as the establishment team and Highlanders the opposite.

Sentiments that cannot be expressed in certain situations suddenly find space when Highlanders and Dynamos play and the result is always a tinderbox, which often results in violence.

For example, when the violence erupted at Barbourfields Stadium, I heard someone say, The Ndebeles have started, without realising the causal tribalism, which has become a hallmark when the two teams meet.

It goes without saying that for that person Ndebeles are associated with Highlanders and by extension, Shonas with Dynamos and this is what is tragic about Zimbabwe.

We are stuck in a tragic ethnic dichotomy, where we treat each other with suspicion, contempt and sometimes naked hatred, because we have failed to unite.

The only effort at addressing the anger that is bubbling beneath the surface was the 1987 Unity Accord, which increasingly looks farcical, which only brought Zapu and Zanu PF together but failed to deal with the ethnic tensions that continue to this day.

A big problem with Zimbabwe today is that we have adopted the ostrich mentality, where we hide our heads in the sand and pretend such issues do not exist and then we fail to address them, we act surprised when they spring up at football matches.

I saw one leaked WhatsApp message that said Highlanders fans were thugs and Gukurahundi should have wiped them out, quite a sick thing to say, but which could be instructive of our psyche as a nation.

For their part, Highlanders fans also have very nasty chants, where they accuse Dynamos fans Shonas of being complicit and active in the Gukurahundi killings, which reveals that even if we left the 1980s 30 years ago, there is still a festering wound that will not disappear because we pretend it did not happen.

It is also unhelpful that a State media columnist Nathaniel Manheru, known to be a senior civil servant gets acres of space in a public medium to refer to the 1980s killings as the so-called Gukurahundi, blatant denialism, which in other countries is criminalised.

While we can sit on the sidelines, pontificate and point fingers at who is responsible, the need for peace and reconciliation has never been so apparent and that is one way we can fix this broken country.

There is clearly discontentment among a section of the population and there is need to sit down and see how it can be addressed rather than treating the symptoms, which the fans violence is.

Parliament has haggled over the National Peace and Reconciliation Bill, which has been rejected at public meetings, but while the government dithers on this, the reality is that the nation continues to bleed from this division.

It is clear that the government does not want a Bill that will expose its violent past and I daresay, present and will do everything to frustrate it, but this does not help peace-building initiatives in the country and there will always be latent hostility and anger.

There is no appetite to address the Gukurahundi issue and this only creates hate and anger, which find expression in most unlikely places and perpetuates the cycle of violence, which has been an earmark of this country from independence to date.

It is not only Gukurahundi that needs addressing, there is the electoral violence of 1990, the food riots of 1998, the bloodletting of the 2002 and 2008 elections and Operation Murambatsvina of 2005, which need to be dealt with and ignoring all this is just papering over cracks that will continue to haunt generations to come.

This is not to excuse the violence at Barbourfields Stadium last Sunday, but rather to look at the root cause of why games between Highlanders and Dynamos are so emotion-filled and are likely to end prematurely.

What sometimes could be a genuine mistake by the officials is now seen through the lens of continued oppression and marginalisation of a tribe and the Matabeleland region.

Games between Highlanders and Dynamos are more than just football, they are political, and in the build-up to the games the discourse is dominated by politics rather than sporting issues.

As long as we have not dealt with the fundamentals, which revolve around genuine unity, peace and reconciliation, we can resign ourselves to the knowledge that more Highlanders and Dynamos games are likely to end prematurely and in violence.

The answer lies in our unresolved past.

The anatomy of a powerful desktop with an ARM chip | CIO – CIO

When he was growing up, a dream of Linux pioneer Linus Torvalds was to acquire the Acorn Archimedes, a groundbreaking personal computer with the first ARM RISC chips.

But in 1987, Archimedes wasn't available to Torvalds in Finland, so he settled for the Sinclair QL. In the meanwhile, the Archimedes failed and disappeared from the scene, killing any chance for ARM chips to dominate PCs.

Since then, multiple attempts to put ARM chips in PCs have failed. Outside of a few Chromebooks, most PCs have x86 chips from Intel or AMD.

[ 12 hardware and software vulnerabilities you should address now ]

The domination of x86 is a problem for Linaro, an industry organization that advocates ARM hardware and software. Many of its developers use x86 PCs to compile programs for ARM hardware. That's much like trying to write Windows programs on a Mac.

That fact doesn't sit well with George Grey, CEO of Linaro.

"Linus mentioned this a little while ago: How do we get developers to work on ARM first? Why are will still using Intel tools?" Grey asked during a speech at this month's Linaro Connect conference in Budapest.

A powerful Linux laptop or mini-desktop based on an ARM processor needs to built so developers can write and compile applications, he said.

"May be we can take a Chromebook design and put more memory, get upstream Linux support on it, and use it as a developer platform for developers to carry to conferences," Grey said then.

To further that idea, a group of ARM hardware enthusiasts gathered in a room at Linaro Connect to conceptualize a powerful ARM PC. The group settled on building a computer like the Intel NUC -- a mini-desktop with a powerful board computer in it.

The free-flowing session was entertaining, with attendees passionately sharing ideas on the chip, memory, storage, and other components in the PC.

The session, which is available on Linaro's site, also highlighted issues involved in building and supporting an ARM-based PC. There were concerns about whether ARM chips would deliver performance adequate to run powerful applications.

There were alsoconcerns about components and about providing a Linux user experience acceptable to users.

Also important was building a viable ARM PC that would attract hardware makers to participate in such an effort. One worry was the reaction of the enthusiast audience, who might sound off if an ARM desktop didn't work properly, putting hardware vendors and chipmakers at the receiving end of criticism and bad press.

"Based on a research and efforts today, building an ideal PC is going to be hard," said Yang Zhang, director of the technologies group at Linaro.

Attendees quickly agreed that the ARM PC would need an expandable x86-style board with DDR4 memory DIMM slot, and NVMe or SATA slots for plugging in SSDs or other drives. Other features would include gigabit slots and USB slots.

"Definitely, we need to be looking at something with real I/O, not some crappy mobile chipset with soldered-on 2GB of RAM," one attendee said. (Attendees aren't identified in the recording of the discussion.)

Many ARM-based computer boards like Raspberry Pi 3 and Pine64 can be used as PCs, but have limited expandability and components integrated on the board. They aren't ideal for PCs handling heavy workloads.

Also, Zhang pointed out that LPDDR4, which is used in such "mobile" chipsets, is slower than DDR4 memory, which is why the DIMM slots would be needed on the ARM PC.

Next, the discussion shifted to the system-on-chip, and suggestions were made to use CPUs from companies including Marvell and Nvidia. Chips from Qualcomm, Cavium, and HiSilicon weren't suggested because those companies were uninterested in building a PC-style computer for development with Linaro. Ironically, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 will be used in Windows 10 PCs later this year.

An interesting suggestion was Rockchip's RK3399, which is being used in Samsung's Chromebook Pro, which has PCI-Express and USB 3.0. Google and Samsung have been putting in adecent amount of work for Linux support on the chip. But it still is a mobile chip, and not designed for full-powered ARM desktop.

"I have a 24-core Opteron right. To replace that I would need a 64-core Cortex A73 or something, which doesn't exist," said the attendee who suggested the RK3399.

The discussion became a battle between server chips and mobile chips, which each had their issues. While the server chips boast good software support, they are expensive. The mobile chips are cheap but have poor Linux OS support. Software support would need to be added by independent developers, and that can be a considerable amount of work.

In 2015, 96boards -- the ARM hardware effort of Linaro --built a development board called HuskyBoard wth AMD's Opteron A1100 server chip, but that didn't go well. AMD has now abandoned ARM server chips and recently released the 32-core Naples chip based on its x86 Zen architecture.

The initial PC will perhaps have a server chip with decent Linux kernel support. Standard interfaces, sufficient memory, and decent graphics will matter more, as will ensuring that standard components like heatsinks and memory DIMMs can be bought off the shelf.

The purpose of the gathering was to get the ball rolling for the development of a real desktop based on ARM. The PC will likely be developed by 96boards, which provides specifications to build open-source development boards.

IPOB: The Anatomy Of A Journey Without Map By Churchill Okonkwo – SaharaReporters.com

In a treacherous Nigerian political terrain, embarking on a journey without a map is akin to a ram going to a head-fight without a skull. Even with a map, you still need to know the contours and other geophysical attributes of your domain in order to navigate the challenges you will encounter in the course of the journey. Ndigbo have a saying that, if a child is not well prepared and mature enough to seek what killed his father, what killed his father may kill him, too.

Some of the consequences of embarking on a journey without a map are that your trails will be lined with thorns rather than roses; your vision will be blurred rather than clear, all of which could make your journey endless. In the case of IPOB, the interesting outcome of attempting to navigate the complex Nigerian political terrain without a map was getting stuck, only to be rescued by your uncles you once characterized as saboteurs. The first lesson for IPOB: a newborn child does not throw his father up and a boisterous show does not imply knowledge.

Talking about noise, it is an irony that Nnamdi Kanu, who is meant to be Odimegwu Ojukwureincarnate, landed in the tummy of FKK, who in an attempt to belittle Ndigbo once claimed to have slept with Ojukwus wife. What a journey, what an embarrassment. I hope that by now, my IPOB brothers would have admitted that they were heading in the wrong direction after watching the IPOB leader run into the arms of the Yoruba tribe they characterized as betrayers. Second lesson: during a famine, you will be forced to eat what you earlier said you disliked.

So, what should you do when you realize that you are facing the wrong direction in the course of a journey? Keep wallowing in the wilderness? Turnaround? Ask for direction? I guess the Chinese proverb to know the road ahead, you need to ask those who are coming back, is a good start. Where will IPOB find those that are coming back? In history books, oral and written.

The Pan-Africanist writer and historian, Prof. John Henrik Clarke, wrote that even though history is not everything, it is a starting point. He referred to history as a clock that people use to tell their political and cultural time of day. This history, he stated, is a compass we should use to find ourselves on the map of human geography.

Using a compass to navigate your way to a destination is not a dumb luck. It is paying attention to a wonderful tool of science. If the brains behind IPOP had paid attention to the history of Biafran Civil War or the history of the last two independent countries in Africa, Eretria, and South Sudan, they would have realized the folly in a headless ram initiating a head-fight. As such, they should have started by drawing a map, even if it is a sketch.

Without a clear map, one will certainly not know where he or she is. To think that an Independent State of Biafra is in the best interest of Ndigbo in Nigeria is still puzzling to me. To imagine that an independent country could be realized by going to an International Court of no consequence even to countries that obey laws was an illusion. It is also laughable and an act of lazy analysis to compare the EU or Scottish referendum to the realization of Biafra. Without any political backing, therefore, it is a big joke to be calling for a referendum on social media.

Here is a fact: no matter how long one travels in the wrong direction, getting to the right destination will remain elusive. The navigation to any destination should truly begin in the hearts of the voyager. This is the most important map of all. Where is the heart of Ndigbo? If we generate a heat map of Ndigbo, what will be the spread of our data matrix on the map of Nigeria?

If those behind this journey without map had measured the footprint of Ndigbo in Nigeria, they would have realized that the fastest way to get to the top of the mountain is to climb down. Because more than 60% of the heat map of the heartbeat of Ndigbo in Nigeria are outside the domain of the enclave of Igbo states, any map of our domain should be boundless.

IPOB should make a heat map of Ndigbo in Nigeria and distribute it to all their followers and sympathizers. The intent is for them to stare at the spatial distribution of the heartbeat of our brothers and sisters anytime they get that strange feeling of destroying the zoo. By so doing, they will realize that destruction of the zoo is like committing suicide.

The struggle to ensure an equitable Nigeria, essential to the vibrancy of Ndigbo should not be about changing the map of Nigeria. Rather, what is needed is mapping a change of the way we assert ourselves in our domains irrespective of whether it is in Lagos or Kano. My duty is to bring Ndigbo out of this lethargy of always seeing themselves as poor victims that are being trampled by every other tribe in Nigeria. Not everyone is trampling on us. We are champs.

This botched journey should be a lesson that an old woman that provokes a fight but is not pushed to the ground, will provoke again. It is hoped that the voyagers have discovered that Biafra is not and should never be all about them. From here, it is hoped that they will learn to be who they are meant to be in the first place - ordinary mortals with no superior powers. When a black ant bites the buttocks, it learns common sense.

Before IPOB, there was MOSSOB. Like Uwazurike, like Nnamdi Kanu? Time will tell. After this distraction from what the focus of Ndigbo should be in Nigeria, there is currently a pause, a space. In that space lies our freedom to choose how to respond. How should Ndigbo respond? Push for restructuring of Nigeria state? Look inwards and develop the Igbo States? Or Both?

I am happy to hear that Ohaneze will attempt to convince Nnamdi Kanu of the need to push for a restructuring of Nigeria rather than acting like a turtle that geared up beside a river that swallowed an elephant as if it will fly over it. To succeed, however, Ohaneze should let the experience from IPOBs journey without map shape their approach in agitating for restructuring.

As the call for restructuring garner momentum, Ohaneze, just like IPOB, should know that some renegades in the zoo that made the most out of the captivity of Nnamdi Kanu, will be key players. They should know that it will take the cooperation of the dissatisfied ethnic nationalities and different interest groups in Nigeria to make headway with restructuring. As such, Ohaneze should be careful in their actions, not to destroy the bridges that will be crucial in crossing the shark infested rivers of a restructuring. A word is enough for the wise.

In the final analysis, the need to have a map before embarking on any checkered political journey in Nigeria, including restructuring is very crucial. The concept of ebule ji isi eje ogu (A ram goes to fight with its head), without a strategy, even with courage, is outdated and folly.

Sarah Drew Asked *Grey’s Anatomy* to Include a Breast Pump … – Glamour

Last week's episode of Grey's Anatomy was a major one for April and Jackson (the proof is in all those Twitter reaction gifs). Fans finally got their wish for a hot and heavy romantic moment between the pair when the two passionately hooked up on a work trip in snowy Montana. (Thank you, Catherine Avery, for so brilliantly setting that up!)

"That episode ended with a tremendous amount of hope," Sarah Drew (who plays April) explained during the cast's recent panel at Paleyfest. "Whether that translates into romance or just a solidification that they are each others person and theyll always be best friends, that has yet to be seen. Well see what happens.

Although social media was abuzz that the couple might finally get back together, there was a subtle, more significant moment in the episode that viewers might have skipped over. About 10 minutes into the episode, Jackson is on the phone with April, where she's sitting on the bed in her Montana hotel room. She's got her laptop in front of her, but it's not her main focus. Instead, she's tightening a bottle having just breast pumped milk for her baby, Harriet, who was back in Seattle with Catherine.

What's significant about that, you ask? Originally, that wasn't in the scene.

"I asked to have [that] pumping scene," Drew revealed to Glamour. "As a breastfeeding mother, I would be pumping if I was away from my baby. So that action, that cut, made it into the scene. Its something I really care about and is part of, for me, what it means to be a working mother. You have to account for all of that stuff when you travel away from your child. I always really celebrate the moments where we get a window into that struggle or that journey."

Drew approached the episode's directornone other than Kevin McKidd, who plays Dr. Owen Hunt on the seriesfor permission to add the breast pumping equipment to the scene. "I was like, 'It's not in the script, but I would like to have a pump here, and I would like to be doing this action. And can we make sure that we have a wide enough shot to see it?'" (The reason for the wide shot, by the way, was that so viewers could see all the equipment required to pump breast milk. That means the plastic cords, as well as the cooler that comes with the pump which has a special ice pack so you can nestle four bottles inside without spillage.)

PHOTO: Eric McCandless/ABC

True to his word that "our show beautifully depicts the struggle we all have as human beings to juggle our lives," McKidd was happy to honor Drew's request.

"Weve been on the show so long, so we know who our characters are; its important to honor that," McKidd told Glamour. "Sarah has been playing this part for eight years. It was really important to her, so I was like, Of course, were going to do that.' One of the big themes of our show is how do we make the best life with so many commitments when were all pulled in so many directions? In that moment, it really portrayed that well. It's important to show that were all multitasking all the time, especially these doctors who are committed to their patients, but also their own lives going on, too. Its nice to let the audience know that were all going through it together.

McKidd's compassion and understanding for Drew's request only solidified why she's thrilled to have a job on such an inclusive set like Grey's. "On our set, all of the women feel free to speak up," she explained. "Its always been; Ive always felt that way. Ive always had a voice, and thats been an important thing for me since the moment I had my first baby. Like, Oh my gosh, this is so hard! Lets talk about how hard this is!

Another thing Drew loves about the show? Shonda Rhimes' commitment to showing the character's children on screen even if they aren't directly involved in that episode's storyline. "They show that daycare exists in the hospital, so you get this sense these doctors are working really hardand they are able to go in and grab 10, 15 minutes [with their kids]," she said. "Look, parenthood is hard as it is; parenthood is super hard if you are at home and that is your primary focus. Parenthood is also super hard if youre trying to juggle it with work, and these people are kicking ass and taking names at work. Its neat to see that struggle."

Added McKidd: "One of the director's jobs is to tell these stories as beautifully as we can, as truthful as we can, and to make sure everyone is included in the discussions. I think a good director manages to do that and still be a strong leader."

And for those viewers at home that did pick up on the brief scene, Drew said it was a very empowering moment for her and the show. "There were some people that tweeted about it and they were so grateful," she told us. "They were like, Yes! Even one of our wardrobe girls had a baby a year ago, and she said that was her favorite part of the whole episode. She was so grateful that it made it there on the screen. So, yeah, it was so cool.

Sarah Fowlkes

A Texas high school anatomy teacher arrested for allegedly having an improper relationship with a student is seen smiling in her mug shot because she is innocent, according to her lawyer.

The Lockhart Police Department said 27-year-old Sarah Fowlkes of Lockhart High School "engaged in sexual contact" with a 17-year-old male student earlier this month.

Police told NBC Austin affiliate KXAN Fowlkes turned herself in on Monday and bonded out later that day.

Fowlkes' attorney Jason Nassour said, "You've got a young lady who was arrested on the statement of a 17-year-old kid with no corroborating evidence."

He added that "this isn't a guilty person sitting there like they just got caught. When everything's fleshed out it won't be as it appears."

Anatomy of an election: ousting incumbents in Manhattan Beach – Easy Reader

Added on March 23, 2017 Ryan McDonald Manhattan Beach. newsletter

Incumbent Mark Burton came in fourth in Manhattan Beachs March 7 election, missing out on reelection by 222 votes. Photo by Caroline Anderson

by Ryan McDonald

The Manhattan Beach City Council elections on March 7 produced a kind of political black swan: the unseating of not one but two incumbents. With three seats available, council members Mark Burton and Tony DErrico came in fourth and fifth, respectively, in the eight-candidate field.

But Burton and DErrico stand out for another reason besides their status as losing incumbents: they were targeted in negative attacks in the month before the election. A series of glossy mailers sent to some city voters and a widely circulated email from a school board member urged No votes on both incumbents, relying on potentially misleading critiques of their records. And while mudslinging in politics is nothing new, Burton and DErrico appear to have absorbed most of the grime.

It is impossible to say whether the negative ads made the difference in the campaign. (Burton and DErrico both declined to comment for this story.) According to results from Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder, third-place finisher and Councilmember-elect Richard Montgomery finished with 2,753 votes; Burton tallied 2,521, DErrico 1,923. But the negative tone of the campaign has left lingering a bad taste in the mouth of some voters, and raised questions about the influence of outside money in small-town politics.

I cannot help but think that had we had a fundamentally fair election we would have had a vastly different result, said resident Stephanie Robins, lamenting the defeat of Burton and DErrico during public comment at the City Council meeting held the day after the election.

Shadow campaign

One of the first in the volley of negative ads landed in the mailboxes of residents on Feb. 22. The 8.5-by-11-inch mailer featured the pictures of Burton and DErrico found on the City Councils website; a warning written in the style of a Donald Trump Tweet stood out against a canary-yellow background:

Dump the Incumbents! Burton & DErrico must go, worst fiscal management ever! it read.

The backside of the mailer spelled out a theme that would continue in at least two subsequent advertisements: that DErrico and Burton were poor fiscal stewards who presided over a profligate era for the city. It noted the approval of a $2.3 million home loan for assistant city manager Nadine Nader, which came in 2015 on a 4-1 vote that Burton and DErrico joined.

But while many of the figures cited by the flyer were accurate, it failed to distinguish decisions made by the City Council from the votes of the individual incumbents, who, both on the campaign trail and on the dais, positioned themselves as fiscal conservatives. For example, the flyer states, Last year they gave staff a 5 percent raise and additionally decided to close City Hall every other Friday. But Burton and DErrico were the two opposing votes in the councils 3-2 approval of its two-year budget in June 2016. And Burton specifically sought an amendment to the motion to study the efficiency of the citys 9-80 work schedule.

Two additional, substantially similar flyers appeared in mailboxes on March 1 and March 3.

Even more worrisome to voters than the accuracy of the mailers was their mysterious origins. Each came from a Long Beach-based organization called Voters for Good Government, an independent expenditure group not authorized by a candidate or a committee controlled by a candidate. In total, the group reported raising $28,000, almost $10,000 of which was spent on mailers opposing Burton and DErrico.

The money came in twelve different donations from people and businesses throughout Los Angeles County, none of them having apparent connections to Manhattan Beach. They include: Robert Alter, an Orange County hotel and real estate investor, who gave $5,000 on Feb. 22; Anna Sauceda a self-employed construction worker who gave $2,000 on Feb. 17; her husband Darrel, who also gave $2,000 on Feb. 17 through a Santa Fe Springs business; and a pair of maintenance companies, which share a Norwalk mailing address and each gave $2,000 on Feb. 14.

Of the 12 people and companies identified by disclosure forms as donors to Voters for Good Government, 11 did not return calls for comment. Farshid Shooshani, who donated $1,000 on Feb. 28, said he does not remember who approached him about making the donation. Shooshani, a real estate investor and partner in a Los Angeles metal wholesaler, was told that it would aid Paul Koretz, an incumbent seeking reelection to the city council Los Angeles 5th District.

I was told my good friend was running a bit short on funds, and thought I would help him out, Shooshani said.

Records from the Los Angeles City Ethics Commission indicate that Voters for Good Government spent $4,975 to support Koretz. And state law does not require independent expenditure groups to disclose to donors how their money will be spent, nor must donors live in the area where the race is taking place. But the lack of association with Manhattan Beach makes the groups motives for spending more than a third of the money raised opposing two candidates in the city difficult to discern.

According to filings made by Voters for Good Government with the Secretary of State, the principal officers for the firm are David Gould, who served as treasurer, and Billie Martinez, a former South Gate city councilmember. Neither of the officers returned multiple calls and emails.

It is not the groups first time in controversial campaigns. News reports at the time said the group was responsible for a mailer targeting Gerri Guzman, a Montebello school board member, during her 2012 reelection campaign. The flyer said Guzman had once been arrested on suspicion of inflicting injuries on a former boyfriend. Guzman was never prosecuted, and later said that the case stemmed from efforts to defend herself from domestic violence. Guzman ultimately lost to Hector Chacon, who according to the Los Angeles Times spent more than $50,000 campaigning for the $750-a-month position. And according to settlement document from the state Fair Political Practices Commission, Voters for Good Government and Martinez previously admitted violating Californias Political Reform Act as a result of delinquent financial disclosures over a mailer sent out opposing a candidate in a 2013 Bakersfield City Council campaign.

Bob Holmes, a former city councilmember, said he has been observing politics in Manhattan Beach since 1978, and that this was the first time he could remember an independent expenditure committee being active in the city. (Holmes endorsed Montgomery during the race and and agreed with many of the criticisms of Burton and DErrico made in the flyers, but said he had nothing to do with them.) He said the opaque nature of groups like Voters for Good Government was symptomatic of the convoluted nature of campaign finance regulation.

We have such complex finance laws in California that an intelligent guycant figure it out on [his] own. You need to hire a professional campaign treasurer, Holmes said. Its so complex today. And there are very few people who actually do professional campaign reporting.

Gould has previously served as the treasurer for a number of local candidates, including a past City Council campaign of Mayor David Lesser. More recently, Gould served as treasurer for Steve Napolitanos campaign for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors. After losing that race to Janice Hahn in November, Napolitano filed for the City Council race, and was elected March 7, garnering the highest number of votes of the eight candidates.

Reached for comment, Napolitano acknowledged that Gould was the treasurer for his supervisorial campaign, but said he had no knowledge of theeffort against Burton and DErrico, and pointed out that it would have been unlawful for
him to be involved. Napolitano, who worked for Supervisor Don Knabe for more than a decade, said the coincidence was reflective of the fact that there are relatively few people who perform campaign treasurer services in the county. (Holmes agreed with Napolitano, comparing two entities having the same treasurer to two people buying a car from the same dealership.) And he condemned the negative tone the city campaign had taken on.

When there was a hit piece by an independent expenditure group against me during the supervisors race, it came from the same address as my treasurer. But thats the nature of politics, Napolitano said. It was a disappointment going through it then. And having gone through it myself, it is certainly not something I would wish upon anyone.

Taken to school

In the weeks leading up to the election, school board member Ellen Rosenberg sent out an email, titled Parents dont care enough to vote. Promising the straight scoop about the City Council race, it urged readers to prove wrong those who presumed Manhattan parents were politically apathetic.

Despite what you may have heard and they have said, the two incumbents running for re-election are not strong supporters of our shared facilities use agreement between the city and the school district, the email read, referring to an agreement under which the city pays a predetermined amount, currently $570,000, to the school district for use of its facilities, like athletic fields. In bolded type, it continued, Further, they recently voted against a Safe Routes to Schools grant for bike path access to MBMS. Who does that?

The facilities use-agreement referenced in the email was negotiated in 2013 and expired last year. The email claimed that Burton and DErrico had not been supportive of the schools during negotiations for a new agreement, citing at a PTA candidates forum. (At that forum, DErrico called the current arrangement great, but said he wanted to further support the schools.)

The bottom of the email urged votes for eventual winners Nancy Hersman, a former school board member, and Montgomery. It will be up to the incoming council to renegotiate a new shared-facilities agreement.

The spread of the email touched a nerve for the incumbents supporters.

A leading member of our school board abused her position of authority and respect to promulgate a misleading email blast to her vast database of Manhattan Beach parents, fallaciously portraying councilmembers Burton and DErrico as being biased against our children and our schools, read a paid political advertisement in the Beach Reporter last Thursday.

In an interview, Rosenberg said that she originally sent the email on Feb. 28 from her personal email account, not a district mailing list, and estimated that she sent it to about 100 total people in five waves of 20 recipients. Many of the people who ultimately saw it, she said, likely had the email forwarded to them, sometimes with her permission, sometimes without.

She said she has used email to weigh in on political issues before, including past local elections, and disputed the idea that sending the email constituted an abuse of her position. Being on the school board, she said, should not mean that she has fewer opportunities for speech than others.

Im a citizen and a resident and a taxpayer. I am other things in my life in addition to being a school board member, Rosenberg said.

The vote that Rosenberg referred to in the email was part of a unanimous decision by the City Council at their Feb. 7 meeting. That decision approved spending state and federal grant money on safety mechanisms along common routes to the districts elementary schools, American Martyrs School Catholic School, and Manhattan Beach Middle School. Addressing a bottleneck of students that often occurs before and after instruction hours at the middle school, the council also agreed to relocate a fence inside neighboring Polliwog Park, but declined to support building a bike path through a portion of the park. There was significant neighborhood opposition to additional pavement in the park, and Burton, DErrico and Councilmember Wayne Powell joined in the criticism.

Rosenberg said that, despite the unanimous vote, it was not dishonest to portray the two incumbents as she did because they clearly voiced their opposition to the project during the meeting, and that other council members appeased these concerns in order to ensure passage of the broader measure. Mayor pro tem Amy Howorth, who joined in the Feb. 7 vote, said she agreed with this characterization.

Burton and DErrico have been consistent supporters of green space in the park, and earned the support of the nonprofit Friends of Polliwog Park. Following the circulation of Rosenbergs email, the group distributed a response in which Burton pledged his support of district schools. And although the identity of the writer of the Beach Reporter ad was not disclosed, the language mirrored that used by Robins, a member of Friends of Polliwog Park, in her March 8 comments to city council.

Tension between residents of the Polliwog-adjacent neighborhood and schools increased after Election Day because of some Election Day confusion over where to cast ballots those residents should cast their ballots. Two MBUSD schools that had been slated as polling places, including MBMS, pulled back from agreements to do so less than a month before Election Day, and after sample ballots had already been sent out to voters.

Unlike in past municipal elections, the March election was consolidated with the county. According to Brenda Duran, a public information officer for the registrar-recorder, Pacific cancelled on Feb. 8. And the facilities manager for MBMS cancelled on Feb. 24, which she described as very late in the process.

MBUSD Superintendent Mike Matthews vigorously rejected the idea that the district had closed the MBMS polling place in order to influence the outcome of the election.

Thats just silly. One thing we always strive for is higher voter turnout, higher voter participation, Matthews said.

The decision to cancel the polling place came from the campus principals, Matthews said. It was done for safety reasons, saying that the campus did not have adequate security to conduct the balloting. He added that the district offices welcomed the chance to serve as a polling place.

MBMS has served as a polling place in previous elections. When reached by email about what had changed this year, MBMS Principal Kim Linz said that Matthews comments fully explained the reasons for cancelling the polling place, and noted that the campus parking lot served as a location to pick up and drop off ballots.

While county officials were able to find a replacement for the Pacific location at a nearby residence on Dianthus Street, the MBMS cancellation proved harder to rectify. The county moved the polling place to Aviation Park near the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, outside the city limits.

Despite the support of the incumbents from many Polliwog Park advocates, it is not yet clear whether the move affected turnout, or how a change would have affected the incumbents. According to unofficial precinct results from this election, 372 votes cast in a voting booth at the precinct served by the Aviation Park , an increase from 283 in the 2013 election. In that election, Burton fared slightly better in the precinct surrounding Polliwog than he did generally, earning appearing on 56.3 percent of ballots versus 54 percent. DErrico did worse in the precinct, notching 37.7 percent as opposed to 43.5 percent in the city at large.

Several residents, however, did complain that being diverted to Redondo, which had its own municipal election the same day, was confusing. At least one resident contacted the city, saying he was turned away from Aviation Park when a poll worker said that the location was for
Redondo voters.

Duran said that while it was unusual to have a polling place for a municipal election located outside the limits of the city involved, the countys hand was forced by the late closure. County regulations require that the registrar-recorder send out postcards notifying voters of polling place changes at least seven days in advance of the election, which was Tuesday Feb. 28, only four days after the MBMS cancellation on Friday, Feb. 24.

Although we try to save the original locations by informing the owner/contact of the importance of not changing locations after the sample ballot deadline, we are not always successful in convincing them not to cancel, Duran said in an email.

Anatomy of unions, Part 2 – Ashland Daily Press

Based upon the poor condition of labor/management relations in our state now, it is hard to believe Wisconsin was the first state to adopt a public sector collective bargaining law in 1959.

This law allowed unions for cities, counties, other municipalities and school districts (public sector) to bargain for wages, hours and working conditions, but it did not have a working impasse resolution procedure. This law allowed for mediation, but both sides had to agree (which school boards rarely did) and strikes were expressly prohibited.

Many school districts took maximum advantage of the law by keeping entry salaries high, but all other salary-related amounts (increments, lanes, higher degree amounts) low plus only provided the bare minimum or nothing in fringe benefits.

These districts became training grounds and lacked significant teacher retention or experienced staff.

I know this because the district I taught in had far fewer benefits and much lower wages than Fond du Lac or West Bend, yet was geographically right between them. We lost a lot of good teachers to those districts.

The management side of the teeter-totter had all the power and teachers had none, but in 1974 two separate things happened. In January, I started bargaining for teachers and later the Hortonville teachers went on strike, because they felt they deserved higher wages and more benefits.

Those teachers were all fired because the strike was illegal, but it demonstrated to the entire state and legislators how mistreated teachers were in many districts.

State Senators and Assembly Representatives held hearings throughout the state and the result was Senate Bill 15 was passed giving public employees mandatory mediation and binding arbitration rights.

When I started bargaining, our teachers had five sick days versus 10 in other districts, did not have fully paid teacher retirement benefits and could not use sick days for maternity leave (just to name a few).

We had full-time teachers (not entry level) who qualified for food stamps and some teachers children qualified for free and reduced lunch at school. I asked for fairness and the ability for teachers to stay and keep educating children rather than being forced to relocate to other districts for economic reasons. Our teachers united in their beliefs.

Teachers unions trained leaders and mobilized members during unpaid time and used people power to bring about necessary changes without being greedy. No school districts went bankrupt and Wisconsin students won because test scores went up. In fact, Wisconsin ranked in the top five in ACT and SAT scores when compared to all other states.

Every year my union educated new teachers regarding the struggles we had to get them decent wages and benefits and warned they should not take them for granted.

However, other unions did not and just had teachers pay their dues with no other investment. New teachers graduating from college just assumed all the benefits were a right or entitlement rather than an investment that needed to be protected.

Anatomy of autonomy: A look at how self-driving cars think – New Atlas

As self-driving cars edge closer to production, the race to develop autonomous systems that can handle the driving anytime and anywhere is hotting up. Along with the big names, smaller players are pushing to nail the formula with their own kits that would convert existing cars into autonomous ones. One such company is AImotive, and we paid a visit to its Mountain View, California office to chat with senior team member Lorant Pocsveiler about how self-driving cars see, understand and react to the world around them.

Join more than 500 New Atlas Plus subscribers who read our newsletter and website without ads.

It's just US$19 a year.

Just like any human driver, an autonomous car needs to see what's happening around it. The team at AImotive believes, because the roads are designed for humans, the first self-driving cars will need to be vision-based.

"We use a camera-first approach here," Lorant Pocsveiler tells New Atlas. He's sitting in the conference room of the company's US offices, a house in Mountain View converted for business use. "We think in an environment such as [our current road setup], which has been designed around humans with visual cues in mind... the camera-first approach has the best chance to identify things. It's a very rich source of information."

Cameras mounted to the roof, nose and tail of the car (with radar as a backup) work to build a picture of what's going on, essentially acting as a set of eyes and ears. Different players in the self-driving game are taking varying approaches, with many utilizing expensive Lidar, but the team at AImotive is designing a system to work with any sensors that meet its basic resolution guidelines, making it easier for manufacturers to match the software with their own hardware.

Being able to see what's happening is one thing, being able to interpret it is another. In the AImotive car, the recognition engine breaks down raw information from the sensors and feeds it through special segmentation software, which is tasked with identifying various objects. Although it's able to handle up to 100 different object classes, the system currently uses just 25.

For every frame captured on camera, the software is able to create a list of what it's seeing, with details regarding size, distance and angle in relation to the car. This is all displayed on the in-car screen, which gives each different class a unique colour. Information from the cameras and sensors is overlaid with data from the location engine, which uses regular GPS data to build a clearer picture of where the car is.

"The location engine's main role is to figure out where the car is" Pocveiler says. "We have to know where the car is precisely. GPS is the starting point for that, however GPS might not be precise enough."

Check out AImotive object recognition at work in the video above.

"In order to improve the location data, we also use landmarks," Pocveiler continues. "This is all about highlighting the precise position of certain traffic signs and signals. We know where a certain traffic sign should be, what the precise position is, then we figure the position of the car by measuring the distance and direction from that object. This improves the precision of where the car is."

Just as we trust what our eyes perceive over the little map on our dashboard, AImotive is building a vision-first system, meaning navigation data is there to confirm what the cameras are seeing. Obviously, it's also important the car knows what roads to take when users program a destination.

Once it knows what everything is, the car needs to plot a course. At AImotive, that task falls to the motion engine. It calculates the historical path of objects (where they've been), their current location and, using this data, where they're likely to head next. As you'd imagine, the system is constantly recalculating what it expects the cars and pedestrians around it to do, just as regular drivers are always watching the traffic around them for cues as to what's coming.

With all this data in place, the car can actually go about plotting a path through the chaos. Once again, data about where the car wants to go can be displayed live on an in-car screen, complete with a moving arrow.

With all the thinking done, the car needs to actually put thoughts or plans into action. Once all this information has been processed, all the AImotive system needs to do is electronically apply inputs to the steering, gas and brakes through its control engine.

We weren't able to see the car driving itself on our visit the company doesn't have a driverless testing license in California yet but we did get to see some footage of it working in a simulation (more on that later). Perhaps the highest praise we can heap on the display is that, if you hadn't been told there was no driver behind the wheel, you'd have no idea.

Obviously, this is complicated to put into action. Everything we've described needs to happen hundreds (or thousands) of times every second, and it needs to happen perfectly. There is no room for error and no room for teething problems when it's jostling with notoriously pushy Californian drivers. The software relies on perfectly calibrated cameras and sensors, too, something handled by yet another AI element of the AImotive package. In spite of this, AImotive is bullish about the potential of its system.

"I would say by the end of this year, on a technology level, a highway scenario would be in place," Pocveiler tells New Atlas. In other words, the system could be able to comfortably drive on the highway driving within twelve months. "By the end of next year we could have a city scenario covered." Just to be clear, that doesn't mean the system will be installed in a working autonomous car anytime soon, but the software capability is likely to be there.

That potential, and the rapid rate of development, is the result of constant testing, both in the real world and using an in-house simulator. Rather than focusing on covering millions of on-road testing miles like Waymo or Uber, the team at AImotive has put together an in-house simulation system that is able to put the car through its paces around the clock.

Perhaps more importantly, no humans are put into the line of fire during testing, and almost any scenario can be simulated. Want to know how the car will react if an elephant wanders onto the interstate? You can do that. Curious about what happens when two cars have an accident in front of you? Load it up and see what happens.

It's this level of research and development that will be integral to bringing self-driving cars to our roads. If you're keen on driving, that day might be a sad one, but when they do arrive, at least you'll have an idea what's happening under the hood.

Station 19 Season 3 Premiere Recap: Which of Grey’s Anatomy’s Imperiled Staffers Made It Out of Joe’s Bar Alive? – Yahoo Entertainment

The line Yeah, thats not good is only uttered once during the Season 3 premiere of Station 19. But really, it couldve been repeated over and over, because a whole mess of not-good, very-bad things happened, some of which seemed to bode awfully poorly for the futures of the Greys Anatomy doctors involved in that series winter finale. Read on, and well go over them one by one

station-19-recap-season-3-episode-1-i-know-this-bar-greys-cliffhanger

TWO WEEKS AGO | Since I Know This Bar took place not only in the present (picking up at the point that Greys turned Joes into a parking lot) but also the recent past (two weeks earlier), Im going to detail the events of that not-so-ancient history first for the sake of a linear read. So 14 days ago, the Station 19 crew threw Ben and Bailey a Youre having a firehouse baby party, just before which Vic introduced new beau, Jackson, to her friends. Besides being the first that Bailey knew about Jackson and Vics relationship, the celebration also clued in Pruitt to the attraction simmering between Andy and Sullivan when the captain volunteered to join her on a routine call. While away from the station, he apologized for hurting her but maintained that they couldnt break the rules and be together. Yet they fell in love, which was also against the rules, she angrily noted. And you did nothing to discourage it!

More from TVLine

Later, alone with Sullivan at the station, Andy suggested that if Ripley were still here, I think he might tell you to screw the rules. So Sullivan at last came clean about why hed pumped the brakes: Theyre making me battalion chief, and I want you to make captain, but thats not gonna happen if were together. Sensing that he was more worried about his own promotion than hers, and to hell with their relationship, she walked away. At home, Pruitt raged at his daughter about the situation she was in or rather, the one shed put him in. Your decisions reflect on me and my legacy! he hollered. When he refused to follow Andys order to get out, she stormed out herself. And, of course, the whole shouting match was overheard by Maya, whod have had to have been deaf to have missed it.

station-19-recap season-3-episode-1-i-know-this-bar-greys-cliffhanger

HERE AND NOW | In our current timeline, chaos reigned in the aftermath of the car crash at Joes. Greys residents Helm and Simms appeared to be in particularly bad shape, and Casey, suffering from PTSD, kept asking whether a bomb had gone off. Though Ben was able to ascertain that the car wasnt leaking gas and therefore wasnt a fire risk, the structural integrity of the bar had been compromised, so he had to get everyone upstairs and outside asap. Trouble was, the back door had been blocked by a cement truck. While Station 19s firefighters raced to the scene, Vic panicking upon finding out that her hot doctor lover was among those in the bar, Ben and Levi treated the cars driver, a woman named Joan whod swerved wildly as she was racing husband Don to the hospital, lest he die of a heart attack.

While trying to figure out how they could move the cement truck the fastest, Vic sensed that Andy was judging her for worrying about Jackson when, having so recently lost Ripley, her vagina should be a war widow, right? So Vic explained how shed grieved Barrett Doss delivering a helluva monologue and theorized that Andy was grieving something, too. (If she only knew !) By and by, the firefighters all pulled together to push the cement truck out of the way, only for it to wind up being blocked by the arriving tow truck! Doh! Inside, Ben had a distraught Joan perform CPR on Don and even affix EKG paddles. Miraculously, they were able to restart his heart. After Travis got him out of the car and out of the front window to safety, Joan attempted to use her crafting scissors to cut herself free of her seatbelt just as the car lurched forward, causing her to stab herself in the carotid artery. RIP, Joan.

station-19-recap season-3-episode-1-i-know-this-bar-greys-cliffhanger

UNHAPPY ENDINGS | Nearby, a delirious Taryn babbled on about how they had to get out of there, because Ben was having a baby and all that, prompting Warren to admit to Jackson that no no, he and Bailey werent expecting anymore. Just as the cement truck was finally moved from the back exit, Blake started choking and turning blue, and Bailey arrived on the scene. Upon learning that her husband was in the bar, she tried to pull rank, but in this instance, she had none. Dr. Bailey, you are not my chief! Dean had to remind her as he ordered her to stay back so that she didnt cost him any time time shed be livid if he cost her in an O.R. Once she was eventually reunited with Ben, he tried to blame her miscarriage on the stress that his job caused her. It wasnt that, she reassured him. Just, life scares me to death sometimes. Right there with ya, Miranda.

As all of Greys docs were taken to the hospital, as far as we knew alive if not well, Maya challenged Andy to talk to her she apparently hadnt, not really, since the night of her and her dads big blowup. So Andy, while stressing that she hadnt slept with Sullivan, revealed that the captain had torpedoed their budding romance for the sake of possible promotions. Armed with this new intel, Maya immediately dumped Jack, who guessed that, with a new fire chief soon to be named, she was hoping that when the promotions trickled down, she might make captain. Meanwhile, blaming himself for Joans death, Travis told Vic that the deceased had spoken about her and her husbands dog, Cleo. So they made a detour en route back to the station so that he could feed the pooch. (Id love to say that I didnt tear up as Cleo greeted Travis, but er I cant. Animals get me every time.) Back at the firehouse, Sullivan first called Andy out for insubordination, then ordered her to take a week off so that she could figure out how to at least pretend to respect him. Snap!

So, what did you think of I Know This Bar? Grade it in the poll below, then hit the comments. Did it seem, as promised by showrunner Krista Vernoff, grittier to you?

Anatomy of violence: Two critical points that left police on back foot – Outlook India

Anatomy of violence: Two critical points that left police on back foot

New Delhi, Feb 29 (IANS) A move by a far-Left women''s rights group, Pinjra Tod, to mobilise locals in northeast Delhi and the near-lynching of Deputy Commissioner of Police Amit Sharma by rioters were two critical points that left security forces on the back foot, police sources said on Saturday.

They said it all started from February 22 evening when Pinjra Tod members started mobilising locals protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and directed them to gather at Jafrabad metro station.

"The anti-CAA protesters came and squatted at Jafrabad metro station on February 22 at 10 p.m. We thought protesters would gather at the old site at Seelampur service lane, which is around a kilometre away," a police source said.

The new set of protesters gathered at Jafrabad metro station included around 500 women, small children and 400 men. They came out from congested bylanes and gathered at the metro station. However, the core group consisted of outsiders.

The police could not take action to remove them as they were outnumbered.

"We had limited women personnel, so we could not act. Besides, there are High Court and Supreme Court orders about the right to protest. However, we did not allow them to set up tents, microphones or a platform at the site," said a source.

By February 23 morning, the crowd swelled to around 3,000 people. "We had limited staff even as Pinjra Tod members were mobilising the crowd with locals'' support," said the source.

Explaining the situation, sources said Delhi''s northeast district could be the most congested part in the country. The area around Jafrabad and Maujpur is so congested that around 80,000 people live per sq km.

Seeing the rising number of people at Jafrabad metro station, a kilometre away at Maujpur metro station, another community also gathered and started a dharna. They said they would jam the entire stretch of Maujpur. It was here that BJP leader Kapil Mishra came and addressed the crowd and then left.

"We tried to reason with them, but they wouldn''t listen," said a police source.

The template for both the situations -- at Jafrabad and Maujpur -- was the same. At Jafrabad, most of the people in the crowd said that if protesters were allowed at Shaheen Bagh, then they too could protest. "At Maujpur, the crowd asked: why don''t you remove Jafrabad protesters?''," said the source.

In the evening, stone pelting started on protesters at Maujpur, but the police were able to control it.

"At the same time, there was some tension at Chand Bagh. A Deputy Commissioner of Police went there and controlled it.

"We made adequate arrangements for Monday February 24: US President Donald Trump was on a visit and was about to arrive that evening. The eastern range officers were exempt from being deployed for security. They had their own problems to deal with," a source said.

Though it took time to mobilise the force, adequate number of police personnel and officers were deployed.

"Our major concern was to protect Maujpur, as the area is surrounded by a particular community," said a police officer. "It was easy to mobilise people from Jafrabad and Kardampuri in a few minutes."

On February 24 around 9 am , a call was received that Chand Bagh rioters were targeting a petrol pump.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Amit Sharma reached Chand Bagh with three companies on February 24 at 9 a.m. after he received a call that a petrol station was targeted. He rushed there, and between 9:30 a.m. and 10 am, he was attacked and Assistant Commissioner of Police Gokulpuri were almost lynched and a Head constable, Ratan Lal, was shot dead -- the bullet passed from his left shoulder, piercing his heart, and got stuck in the right arm.

The three-company force which was with the DCP Sharma disappeared after he was attacked. Thereafter, large-scale rioting began.

The challenge now was to send all the reserve force to Chand Bagh. The Joint Commissioner of Police heading Eastern Range Alok Kumar was tasked with the job.

He made his move on the 66 Feet main Jafrabad Road. He was stuck at Kardampuri where his force came under a fierce attack. Similarly, Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Jasmeet Singh was stuck near Maujpur.

Then Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Joy Tirkey and Joint Commissioner of Police Manish Agarwal were called in.

Using a different route -- Usmanpur to Pushta Road -- they reached Chand Bagh and controlled the situation.

By 4 p.m, the police managed ro reclaim Wazirabad and 66 Feet Road at Jafrabad.

"At many places, both sides were firing at each other using countrymade revolvers. They were also against the police. At some places, policemen came right into the middle," said a police source, adding that the police personnel could not resort to firing because they were attacked from both sides.

"We (police), however, carried out limited firing," said another police source, asserting that none of the officers retreated.

"We didn''t allow any lynching... though covering each point is impossible."

At Shiv Vihar, an Additional DCP was with 15 personnel; they could not manage to enter inside the area, but they remained unfazed. They stayed on and contained the riots.

"Rioting started at around 20 locations simultaneously and our men stood there to control the rioters. They didn''t move back," said a police source.

Maximum calls -- 7,500 -- were received from Noor-e-Ilyahi, Brahampuri and Yamuna Vihar.

On February 25, the situation remained the same.

"We were able to control the situation by late evening. Then we entered the lanes and bylanes and fully took control of the situation," said a police officer.

Soon, policemen were seen inside Khajuri Khas, Dayalpur, Karawal Nagar and Jafrabad.

Police sources said it was a conscious decision not to resort to firing at rioters even when police teams were trapped. "Our only priority was to contain the riots and bring the situation under control," said a police officer.

Art Meets 3D Technology to Explore Mysteries of the Human Body: Mixed Dimensions Creates Accurately Detailed Anatomy Figurines Combining Advanced 3D…

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 20, 2019 /PRNewswire/ --Introducing a new way of appreciating and learning about the human body, Mixed Dimensions, (https://mixeddimensions.com/), has launched a unique set of highly accurate and affordable three-dimensional anatomy models, using advanced 3D printers and expert artists to ensure the highest level of sophistication in their detailed designs.

Bringing art and technology together, the team at Mixed Dimensions was inspired to take on a new challenge of making accurately detailed anatomy models. The company uses Mimaki printers and Daz 3D software along with employing expert artists to color and detail the models by hand in order to guarantee its high-quality models. The company's intricate figures show the minute details of the human body's muscles, bones, and skin. Anatomy models are typically colorless and movable, while in stark contrast, Mixed Dimensions has created figurines to show the different dimensions of the human body that can be easier explored and appreciated.

"For many of us, our love of the human form began as kids, when we drew our first stick figure bodies with smiling faces. As we grew older, we bought anatomy books, tirelessly studied in college and postgraduate programs, and learned the craft of understanding the human body as artists, scientists, and medical professionals," said Gilman Louie, chairman of Mixed Dimensions. "For those of you dedicated to the lifelong pursuit to decode the mystery of the human body, we have created these models for you. Time and extreme effort are put into these 3D anatomy models, setting them apart from any competitor in the market."

Benefits of Mixed Dimensions' 3D printed anatomy models include:

Customization: Mixed Dimensions' 3D models are easily customizable with the option of choosing a gender, and having full or half skin, muscle, bone, and organs, depending on the size of the model ordered. The larger the model, the more options that are available.

Ease of Usability: The figurines are stationary models that will come with a stand to be out on display. They can easily be placed on a desk or on display for others to observe and for reference.

Accuracy: Mixed Dimensions uses expert artists, high-quality printers, and advanced 3D software to build models to accurate sizes and proportions.

Affordability:The figurines come in four different sizes and prices. There are 5-inch, 7-inch, 9-inch, and 12-inch models available, costing between $25 to $300, depending on the level of customization.

"Mixed Dimensions is really on the frontier of what is possible with 3D printing," Louie added. "We believe that we will be leading the way in creating the factory of the future that is based on full customization and personalization of 3D content that will be produced on demand, eliminating all the previous manufacturing methods using the power of 3D printing."

Mixed Dimensions have launched a Kickstarter campaign, (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mixed-dimensions/anatomically-correct-human-models-3d-printed-in-full-color), to spread awareness about their highly-detailed human anatomy models among consumers and the investment community.

Grey’s Anatomy: 10 Couples That Would Have Made A Lot Of Sense (But Never Got Together) – Screen Rant

This was a surprisingly difficult list to write, not just because there have been an awful lot of couples in Grey's Anatomy over the last 15 years, but also because a lot of those relationships were so perfect that we couldn't really imagine them being with anyone else. Imagine splitting up Meredith and Derek, for example!

RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 5 Friendships We Would Have Loved To Have Seen (& 5 We Don't Care About)

However, despite the medical drama's impressive track record, there have been a few couples that fans weren't exactly too keen about. Other characters have been incredibly unlucky in love and so it's about time that changes. Here are 10 couples that would have made a lot of sense but never got together.

These two were absolutely adorable together and their friendship remains one of the highlights of Grey's Anatomy. This pairing originally started as a one night stand, as Callie was depressed about the deterioration of her relationship with George, who wasn't treating her particularly well.

Mark offered his services to Callie, who accepted, and then felt incredibly guilty afterward. Despite this, though, the two soon became firm friends with benefits, but their relationship never went any further than physical attraction. Mark and Callie were such good friends, that a relationship between the two would have seemed almost natural. They even share a daughter together.

These two became friends after Lexie discovered that George was repeating his intern year and she agreed to keep his secret. As a result, they grew closer and even rented an apartment together, that George christened the 'crapartment', because it was so, you know...less than.

RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: Top 10 Fan-Favorite Characters, Ranked

However, Lexie's constant optimism balanced out George's negativity, and she even helped him realize that things weren't as bad as they seemed. George then became a happier person. Honestly, these two were very cute together and would have made an adorable, awkward little couple.

Many people might be wondering why we've included this entry on the list. To explain, we must refer back to the beginning of Season 14, when it was discovered that Amelia had a benign (but absolutely massive) tumor pressing down on her brain. It was revealed that she had had this tumor for around 10 years.

Struggling to come to terms with what this meant for her, both personally and professionally, Amelia entered a brief spiral of doubt, with DeLuca helping her process everything. Even after her operation, DeLuca was there to comfort her and help her heal. If these two ever became a couple, they would be so supportive of one another.

Izzie and Jackson never really interacted during their time on the show together. Which is fair enough if you think about it, as Izzie left Grey's Anatomy soon after Jackson joined. They didn't even have enough time to become friends. However, we think that if they had been given a chance, they could have made a pretty decent couple.

RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 6 Romances That Ended Too Soon (& 4 That Didn't End Soon Enough)

Izzie was very cheerful and full of hope, bordering on naive. She always looked out for her patients and advocated for them well but she had a habit of becoming easily attached. When Jackson first arrived, he was arrogant and cocksure. The two could have helped each other to become better surgeons and better people in general.

To a lot of people, the mere fact that Meredith and Alex were even considered to be on this list is the highest form of sacrilege. Be that as it may, Meredith and Alex are now extremely close and have been arguably since before Cristina actually left Grey Sloan Memorial to jet off to Switzerland.

Meredith hasn't really found anyone to be with since Derek died and so it's no exaggeration to say that Alex is probably the most important man in her life. As for Alex himself, he does have Jo, but the way he interacts with Mer makes one think that there could be something between these two best friends. Or maybe it's just wishful thinking.

These two have actually slept together on Grey's Anatomy, but seeing as how Derek is Amelia's big brother, Mark wisely went no further than a casual booty call. However, Mark did date Lexie, who was Derek's little sister-in-law, so really, there is no excuse as to why Amelia and Mark didn't get together beforehand.

RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 10 Hilarious Patient Memes Only True Fans Will Understand

Amelia is known for being a little crazy and that has made her come across as slightly annoying to both characters in, and fans of, Grey's Anatomy. However, I always liked Amelia and she and Mark would have been such a great fit together. They're both hilarious people who can take a joke, but they are also serious, talented professionals.

This is another friendship between two people who should have taken it to the next level. Certainly, in later seasons, Callie and Owen became closer as they went through divorces and disasters and began collaborating on innovative medical projects. They weren't without their disagreements (this is Owen after all) but they always had each other's backs.

In Season 11, they were designing prosthetic limbs to help soldiers who had been injured in the line of duty. Their enthusiasm and teamwork was fun to watch, and they could both have a laugh together. We're sort of glad these two didn't get together, as who knows what would have happened to Callie, but it's fun to imagine what these two would have been like as a couple.

Teddy has been through the mother of all wringers when it comes to her love life. She has loved Owen, who used her as and when he saw fit; the hospital psychologist, whose job meant he couldn't settle down; Henry, who was adorable but died, and Tom, who was dumped for Teddy's baby daddy, Owen.

RELATED: Grey's Anatomy: 5 Times Cristina Was Meredith's Best Friend (& 5 Times It Was Alex)

Essentially, what we're saying is that, with the exception of Henry, Teddy is too good for all these men. She needs someone who will treat her right and will respect her opinions and choices. Link has already proven that he is a good man and if he weren't with Amelia and a possible baby, we're pretty sure that he and Teddy would make an excellent couple.

Maggie is a great character. She's intelligent, friendly and she gets on well with her colleagues, The one thing that Maggie has always been rubbish at, though, is love. Finding love, being in love, anything to do with love and Maggie the Confident crumbles away into Maggie the Awkward and Obsessed.

However, Tom is the complete opposite. He's casual, very witty and very charming. If he and Maggie got together, Maggie might second doubt everything, as is her MO, but he is probably the only person in Grey Sloan who would encourage Maggie to relax and just have a bit of fun. Maggie would also help to soften Tom and help him to get along with his peers.

We cannot stress this one enough. Despite there being so many strong and confident women in Grey's Anatomy, the only two women Owen Hunt seemingly can't get enough of are Teddy and Amelia. It beggars belief. The worst thing is is that Owen has treated both women terribly in the past and yet they still give him multiple chances.

Owen's relationship with Amelia wasn't all his fault, to be fair, as Amelia kept on backing out 6 or 7 times a day. However, Amelia got better and they resumed their relationship, only for Owen to act like a complete jerk. It was the same with Teddy. Owen only wanted her when she was unavailable and was jealous of any partner she had.

Grey’s Anatomy: Most Hated Supporting Characters, Ranked – Screen Rant

There have been many listsasking about fans' favorite characters. But what about the worst? On Grey's Anatomy, fans have seen many characters leave just as quickly as they have arrived. There are only two reasons for this: they are there to cause some drama or to set off another character's exit. Most of the time, these revolving door characters are not liked by the viewers.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 6 Best Couples (And 5 Worst)

But which supporting character do you think has been the worst? From the reappearance of Denny Duquette to Nancy the rude Shepherd sibling, here are the 10 most hated supporting characters on the series, ranked.

When Denny was introduced to the show, everyone loved him. After Alex cheated on Izzie, it was nice to seeher be treated with the love and respect she deserved. Fans were devastated for the couple when Denny sadly passed away.

However, they were all confused when Ghost Denny reappeared. Although Izzie got back together with Alex, she soon began a relationship with the apparition. Fans got sick of seeing Ghost Denny as he lingered around with no explanation of how his existence was possible. Even after Izzie's tumor was diagnosed he still popped up.

The whole Ava/Alex romance was a relationship the fans detested. Ava, otherwise known as Rebecca Pope, was first introduced in Season 4 after being involved in the ferry boat accident. Alex was assigned to the case, and the two grew closer.

Ava soon came back for Alex after leaving her husband and baby. However, her presence began to affect Alex's work and personal life. In the end,he was forced to get her sectioned as she began to struggle with her new identity. Although he claimed to like her, fans never knew what happened to Ava after she was committed. It just made the storyline seem pointless.

Eliza Minnick was one of the most hated doctors to ever walk the halls of Grey Sloan. Introduced in Season 13, Minnick was brought in to replace Webber as the head of the surgical residency program. She also caught the eye of Arizona, and the two briefly started a relationship.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: The 10 Worst Episodes According to IMDb

However, Minnick became the enemy of many attendings when she intervened in their surgeries. She proved to be a stickler for the rules, ordering the residents and attendings to follow protocol. Fans soon rejoiced when Bailey gave Minnick her marching orders for putting Stephanie in danger.

In Season 9, the hospital was on the verge of collapse after they were forced to pay the crash settlement. As a result, Alana Cahill was brought into the hospital to help them find an investor. Similar to Minnick, Alana got on the wrong side of the attendings by trying to change the hospital procedures and administration.

She first closed the ER, which April and Derek protested against. She also placed cameras in the CCU, where a remote physician would supervise the doctors with their bedside manner and patient care. Alana cemented her enemy status among the attendings when she disapproved of them saving a trauma patient.

Out of all the Shepherd sisters, Nancy has proven to be the worst one of all. When it came to her siblings, Nancy didn't treat them with respect. She was rude, judgmental and very unsupportive of Amelia and Derek's decisions.

When Derek wanted to divorce Addison because she cheated, Nancy told him to forgive her. She refused to donate a nerve to help Derek with his hand. Unsurprisingly, Nancy treated Amelia just as badly as her other siblings, humiliating her in front of Link. It's come to the point where fans hate every moment she's onscreen.

In Season 7,Lucy Fieldswas first introduced when Arizona picked her to monitor Callie's pregnancy. Lucyalso began a relationship with Alex after the pair briefly butted heads over their patients.

RELATED:Grey's Anatomy: 5 Best Character Arcs (& 5 Most Disappointing)

However, she cemented herself as one of the worst characters when she poached a job opportunity off of Alex. In the episode "I Will Survive," Lucy overheard Arizona offer Alex a position at the Namboze Clinic in Africa. After much debate, Alex chose to turn down the position because he was in love with Lucy. Turned out the relationship wasn't as important to the obstetrician, as she swipedit from under his nose.

Reed Adamson first made an appearance in Season 6, coming in during the Seattle Mercy-West merger. Fans took an immediate dislike to the resident after she refused to move out of George's cubby. She also butted heads often with Alex over the handling of patient care.

Other than the fact that she was April's best friend and would sleep with attendings to scrub in on surgeries, fans learned nothing else about Reed. It was hard to form an opinion when the writers didn't give her a storyline of her own. Although it was a shock, her death had no impact on the show.

Another person fans didn't take to was Penelope Blake. Penny didn't make a good impression on the fans when she was one of the doctors responsible for Derek's death. They were even more surprised when she was introduced as Callie's new girlfriend, transferring to Grey Sloan to take part in the residency program.

AlthoughPenny was nice, no one could warm up to the resident as she continued tofosterchaos. She caused a custody battle between Arizona and Callie when the ortho surgeon wanted to move with Sofia.Penny was also responsible fortensionbetween Meredith and Amelia and had her own mini-feud with Stephanie. No one was really sad to see the back of Penny.

Gary Clark has to be one of the worst villains on the show. Responsible for the deaths of many physicians, including Reed and Charles Percy, Gary was the gunman that went on a shooting spree.

At first, fans felt sympathetic towards Gary when his wife was pulled off of life support. However, they became unnerved when the grieving widower continued to show up at the hospital. The firsttime waswhen he filed a lawsuit against Derek and the hospital for 'killing his wife." The second was when he turned up brandishing a gun. No one expected this storyline would take such a sinister turn.

Although the guy had been highly respected in the medical community, Harper Avery was the absolute worst. He was disrespectful to everyone, including Jackson, whom he treated like a child and belittled about his divorce.

Harper sealed himself as the worst supporting character when the surgeons found out he had sexually assaulted hundreds of women. Everything that the Harper Avery award represented was now tainted by the revelation of the man's true self. The foundation he set up was quickly dissolved and was replaced by Catherine Fox's, who promised to help his victims heal.

The anatomy of a turnaround: Virginia Tech – The Athletic

BLACKSBURG, Va. Five-touchdown losses tend to lead to a period of self-reflection, and nobody at Virginia Tech was exempted after the Hokies 45-10 setback to Duke on Sept. 27, a head-scratcher of a result that had Blacksburg at DEFCON1.

Whether Justin Fuente was ever truly on the hot seat with a seemingly prohibitive $15 million buyout figure is irrelevant. What was amazing, however, is the fact that it was a topic that could even be broached a little over a year after Virginia Tech dismantled Florida State in Tallahassee to open the 2018 season.

A year of negative headlines, from transfers to dismissals to locker-room turmoil to tough losses, might have been forgivable if it appeared as though that was all in the rearview mirror. But that didnt seem to be the case after the Hokies slogged through the first month of the season, losing their two games of significance to Boston College and Duke and hardly looking impressive in wins against Old Dominion and...

Now PlayingGrey's Anatomy Deleted Scene: Catherine Almost Side-Lined Bailey Over Karev

It turns out Karev's (Justin Chambers) violent takedown of DeLuca (Giacomo Gioniotti) at the end of Season 12 had even more ramifications than fans knew.

TV Guide has obtained a deleted scene from the Grey's Anatomy Season 13 DVD set, available Aug. 29, that reveals the fallout from Karev's arrest for DeLuca's beatdown almost got Bailey (Chandra Wilson) sidelined as Chief of Surgery. In the wake of Karev leaving the hospital in handcuffs, Catherine (Debbie Allen) came in guns blazing and questioned if Bailey was ready to do what needed to be done if their pediatric resident was being arrested for aggravated assault.

Bailey wasn't ready to fire Karev before finding out the full story, but she wasn't ready to let Catherine bring in someone else either -- thank God. We all know how it turned out later in the season when Catherine steamrolled Bailey into bringing someone else into the hospital (Hello, Minnick!). Bailey never did fire Karev, and that ended up working out for everyone, except maybe DeLuca.

Grey's Anatomy Mega Buzz: Are Maggie and Jackson Actually a Thing?

Luckily, Bailey is still sitting pretty as Chief of Surgery and everything seems to have worked out -- for now.

Grey's Anatomy returns with a two-hour premiere on Thursday, Sept. 28 at 8/7c on ABC.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Fans ‘Rebuke’ That Jackson, Maggie, April Twist … – Moviefone

Here we were, worried about Dr. Stephanie Edwards (Jerrika Hinton), when it was Japril that Shonda Rhimes tried to kill off in the "Grey's Anatomy" Season 13 finale.

There were plenty of surprises in the finale, including some actual good news to go along with the bittersweet. And then there were those record scratch scenes between April Kepner (Sarah Drew), Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), and Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), including April telling Maggie she can tell that Maggie likes Jackson (!) and she can also tell that Jackson likes Maggie too (!!) ending with the suggestion that Maggie tell Jackson how she feels (!!!).

Didn't Japril make up during #JaprilTheSequel? And didn't Maggie just have a huge crush on Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), like, five minutes ago?

Some fans have been anticipating/dreading a Maggie/Jackson pairing since Maggie's mom suggested she let loose and make a mistake, and that episode was followed by some borderline intimate moments with Jackson. But others thought, nah, they wouldn't do that, it's just step-family members supporting each other.

There are some fans out there who support a Maggie/Jackson pairing, in part because they don't like April and would like to see Jackson with someone else. But several more viewers, at least the ones who tweet, are solidly and vocally against the idea.

Here's a taste of the reactions to Japril + Maggie:

Clearly, this is what Shonda and company wanted -- to get fans talking about speculating in the summer before Season 14. It's possible Jackson will be conflicted, or know he wants to be with April (aka the mother of his child) and this will be another short love triangle for Maggie. It would be nice if she could have her own romance without third-party complications, but that's not "Grey's" style.

"Grey's Anatomy" Season 14 will premiere this fall on ABC.
