Greys Anatomy will be undergoing some big changes in season 14.
Dont worry, characters like Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) arent going anywhere, but a few familiar faces will be exiting or returning this year. EW has gathered the latest intel to help you keep track of the comings and goings at Grey Sloan this season:
Jerrika Hinton, who played Stephanie Edwards since season 9, exited as a series regular at the close of season 13. Tessa Ferrer, whose Dr. Leah Murphy was also part of the season 9 cast, had previously exited in season 10, but returned last year in a recurring status. However, shes not expected to be back in season 14. Marika Domiczyk, who joined the cast as Eliza Minnick, a recurring love interest for Arizona (Jessica Capshaw), will not return after her character was fired in the season 13 finale. Bridget Regan, who originally played Owens (Kevin McKidd) presumed-dead sister, has been recast with Abigail Spencer, who will recur in season 14.
Besides the addition of Spencer to the cast, Italian actress Stefania Spampinato joins in the recurring role of Andrew DeLucas (Giacomo Gianniotti) sister Carina, who boards the Grey Sloan crew as a controversial new doc.
Kim Raver, who exited the series in season 8, will reprise her role as Teddy Altman, while Matthew Morrison is expected to return as Jos abusive husband, Paul Stadler. For the record, here are all the regular characters returning: Meredith Grey, Alex Karev, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), Owen Hunt, Arizona Robbins, April Kepner (Sarah Drew), Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams), Amelia Shepherd (Caterina Scorsone), Jo Wilson (Camilla Luddington), Maggie Pierce (Kelly McCreary), Ben Warren (Jason George), Nathan Riggs (Martin Henderson), Andrew DeLuca, and Catherine Avery (Debbie Allen).

While seasoned massage therapists may take their sense of touch for granted, those newer to the profession quickly learn that palpating human tissue is no simple task. In addition to thoroughly comprehending anatomical structure, 13 exercises are suggested to help therapists recognize the tangible differences between body parts.
As healthcare professionals who navigate through their medium using touch, massage therapists are susceptible to the strengths and weaknesses of their own palpatory skills. A practitioner with a sensitive and responsive touch can adjust his or her applications accordingly, while one lacking these skills can make a faulty assessment, deliver a mediocre massage or even inflict accidental pain. While developing the ability to interpret what is felt underneath ones hands is a valued massage therapy skill, it is also one of the more obscure concepts to teach.
Although it is of major importance, memorizing a map of human anatomical structures is not enough preparation for learning how and where to apply bodywork. Because people come in all shapes and sizes, you can not simply superimpose any given diagram of anatomical landmarks on a client to locate the structure or muscle group being searched for. Most experts agree that there are several components to mastering palpation including combining the imaginative mind and drawing from the therapists knowledge of anatomy.
According to Leon Chaitow, ND, DO, Palpation cannot be learned by reading or listening; it can only be learned by palpation. He also says that an open mind is vital to the task of learning palpatory literacy practitioners with the greatest degree of rigidity, in terms of their training, often have the hardest time allowing themselves to feel new feelings and sense new sensations.
In accordance to John Upledger, DO, OMM, the developer of CranioSacral Therapy, Learning to trust your hands is not an easy task. You must learn to shut off your conscious, critical mind while you palpate for subtle changes in the body you are examining. You must adopt an attitude so that you may temporarily accept without question those perceptions which come into your brain from your hands. After you have developed your palpatory skill, you can criticize what you have felt with your hands. If you criticize before you learn to palpate, you will never learn to palpate.
Each tissue has a different tactile sensation. Since a practitioners fingers can literally only contact the skin, sensing the structures underneath is akin to trying to recognize types of food while blindfolded and wearing winter gloves. Below are some exercises devised by Mary Ann Foster, massage therapist and movement educator, to help develop a bodyworkers palpation skills of skin, superficial fascia, deep fascia, tendons, ligaments and muscle.

There's even an "Adulting School" in Portland, Maine., offering crash courses in the basics of life managementfor a monthly "subscription fee" of $19.99. Adulting School students can soon test for their own "Adulting Quotient," or AQ. The AQ, just like an IQ, is a score measuring just how good you are at life-planning, task management, and more. Students are usually youngerbut co-founder Katie Brunelle says they've heard from wannabe "adults" as old as 40.

In March, YouTube personality Arden Rose published Almost Adulting: All You Need to Know to Get it Together (Sort Of). Rose's book features actual checklists for readers to record milestones and important lessons about how things cost money. In the self-help section in any bookstore, you'll find Adulting: How to Be a Grown-Up in 468 Easyish Steps, published in 2013, and new Gracious: A Practical Primer on Charm, Tact and Unsinkable Strength, or titles like Adulting 101 and Why Didn't They Teach Me This in School?
The word is now so ubiquitous, it's hard to tell exactly where its quasi-ironic, quasi-earnest usage began, but the most logical point of origin is with a playful hashtag popularized by Kelly Williams Brown's AdultingBlog.com. In 2013, Brown offered tips on cleaning your house, making a grocery list, saving money, and other hallmarks of the genre. "I think of adulting as best practices for getting your little corner of the world in order," Brown told me in an interview. "Like buying toilet paper in bulkit's not a moral judgment, if you do or if you don't, and sometimes you won't be able to. But when you can do that, it makes all of your life easier, because then you don't run out of toilet paper."
In the years since the word first prominently appeared, it's taken on a new life: part humblebrag and part self-deprecation. When we joke about "adulting""I cleaned out the fridge! #adulting" or "Working on my taxes and ugh, I hate adulting"we're poking holes in the idea that it's a process with an end goal: a dreamy vision of prepared adulthood, always out of reach. You post a photo of a Luna bar captioned"balanced dinner #adultingfail"to roll your eyes at the idea of ever reaching that picture-perfect stage of adulthood promised to us in sponsored content.
Part of the term's popularity, of course, lies with social media: the new world where people can present curated versions of their lives, with #adultingwin posts on full display for others to envy.
But there's something else to its recent rise, tooin acknowledged #adulting fails we're also reminding ourselves that despite our differences in age or background, we all still feel like children sometimes.

And like any catchphrase, much of its prominence can be attributed to market forces; commercial interests saw a buzzword with monetary appeal, and an ad campaign was born. According to Digiday, companies selling everything from coffee to candy have used "adulting" in advertising. Nestl went so far as to set up an "adult help line" for Nescaf Canada, mocking younger generations' reliance on YouTube videos and wikiHow tutorials for basic help. Their "common adulting situations" include: "Dryer Sheets: Friend or Foe?" and "Big Trouble with Small Appliances." "Adulthood is hard, but we think we can help Nestl make it easier on millennials," Nestle's agency partner told Shopify. "We want to let millennials know we get it, that life can be complicated, but that we have a product that's easy and helpful to them in their transition."

Welcome to Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match.
For Week 9 of the 2017 MLS season, we take a look at Jack Harrisons 76th minute goal that gave New York City FC a 3-2 lead as part of their win over Crew SC on Saturday.
Heres a look at the finish from the NYCFC winger.
Crew SC were on the back foot for much of second half of Saturdays match. Columbus manger Gregg Berhalter admitted as much after the match, suggesting that the Black & Gold lost complete control of the match after taking a second half lead.
Berhalter said #CrewSC lost complete control of the match after taking the lead early in the second half.
NYCFCs game winner began with an Alexander Callens long-ball to winger Rodney Wallace. In the above image, note the Crew SC pressure forcing the NYCFC center back to play a 50/50 ball into the Columbus defensive half. Black & Gold midfielder Mohammed Abu likely should have been covering someone in the middle of the field, but he does begin to track back to his defensive half as he sees Callens make the deep pass.
Wallace receives the ball in a difficult position, and attempts to flick the ball into the path of City striker Sean Okoli. Jonathan Mensah is well positioned to defend this pass, and easily beats Okoli to the ball.
On the far right side of the above image, just to the right of the referee, you can just see Yangel Herrera, who will have the assist on Harrisons goal. Abu is just behind Herrera.
As Jonathan approaches the ball he has three options: a drop pass to goalkeeper Zack Steffen who has a full view of the field, a square pass to right back Harrison Afful or kick the ball way over the head of Afful and out of bounds letting Crew SC regroup defensively. A pass to Steffen is probably the worst option, but any of these three choices should have given his side a chance to move the ball back up the field.
Jonathan opts to make the easy pass to Afful, who will immediately be pressed by Wallace. Both Wallace and Okoli were prepared to pressure the Crew SC back line as soon as the ball was turned over, and that press will force Afful to make a quick decision.
As Afful prepares to receive the ball, he has four immediate options: a drop pass to Steffen, a pass back up the field to Wil Trapp (just to the right of this image), a pass to center-back Nikolai Naess, splitting Okoli and Wallace or a pass back to Jonathan if he moves into a better position.
A pass to Trapp, who was unmarked, would have been ideal but was likely just out of Affuls view and made for a difficult option under the pressure of Wallace.
Before we move on, pay attention to the huge space between the back line and the Crew SC midfielders. From this view, you cant even see Abu or Trapp, though Trapp gets to the sideline in time to theoretically receive a pass. Though Abu began tracking back, he isnt able to make himself useful in this play, showing the value injured Artur with his ability to cover acres of space.
Wallace closes down Affuls angle to the sideline and Okoli pressures Jonathan, removing two of the right backs passing options. Jonathan takes his run in the path of Steffen, effectively bringing Okoli into the path of Steffen as well, further limiting Affuls passing options.
With only one real option to choose from, Afful elects to make a seemingly difficult pass to Naess in the middle of the field. Afful likely sees Naess, highlighted on the right side of the image, and is likely unable to see Herrera sprinting downfield (Editors note, this was confirmed by Afful postgame). From Naesss reaction to Affuls pass, he also did not notice the NYCFC midfielder heading his way.
From this angle, Affuls pass to Naess looks slightly less difficult than the previous view. Wallace may just be cutting off Affuls vision of the right side of the field, hiding the sprinting Herrera from view.
Now is when things really start to go downhill for the Black & Gold. Somehow, Naess did not noticed Herrera blazing toward the ball. Judging by Naesss nonchalant jog toward the ball, it doesnt seem like anyone tells him that Herrera is bearing down on him. Abu still hasnt been able to get in front of Herrera, and will soon slow to a jog and fully give up on this play.
Had Naess not switched off, he would have had a very easy one-touch pass to a totally unmarked Trapp.
Herrera is able to get to the ball at the same time as the Crew SC center back. As you will see below, Herrera is able to deflect the ball around Naess to set up his assist to Harrison. Abu has totally slowed up, and spends the rest of the play doing little more than halfheartedly jogging toward the goal.
In the video above, you can see just how blindsided Naess was by Herrera. I wasnt able to hear what was happening on the field, but if the team is communicating as it should have been (i.e. Steffen and Abu both yelling to Naess about the impending collision with Herrera), then this goal should not have happened.
Once Herrera has deflected the ball around Naess, he sets off a footrace to the ball with the Crew SC defender. Finally, Harrison has arrived on the scene running totally unmarked into the Crew SC goal box. Harrison was able to catch Columbus left back Jukka Raitala too far up the field, and easily beats him back into the attack.
As Herrera beats Naess to the ball, he has a very simple pass to Harrison, who remains unmarked. Raitala has closed down the distance to Harrison, but will be unable to catch the NYCFC winger.
Naess is able to make Herreras pass more difficult than initially anticipated, forcing the City midfielder to make a sliding pass into the path of his teammate. Raitala continues to close down Harrison, but the speedy winger will just beat Raitala and Naess to the ball.
To Raitalas credit, he nearly catches Harrison before he can slot the ball between Steffens legs. Still, neither Raitala nor Naess are able to get in front of Harrisons shot.
Notice Steffens positioning. He has made himself wide in front of Harrison, but his legs are spread very far apart, giving Harrison an easy path to goal.
Note the above video to see just how open Harrison was. Even though Harrison had to slow down his run he still gets to the ball before anyone from Crew SC.
Not the best look for Steffen in the image above. The Crew SC goalkeeper, who had already been chipped for Harrisons first goal, gets nutmegged for the game winner.

Actor Eric Dane is taking a hiatus from his show to battle depression.
ONE of the best loved stars from Greys Anatomy Eric Dane has taken an indefinite hiatus from his new show The Last Ship to battle depression.
A representative for the actor announced the US navy show would take a brief production hiatus to allow Dane, who is the star of the show, to recover.
Eric asked for a break to deal with personal issues, a representative for the actor told People. He suffers from depression and has asked for a few weeks of downtime and the producers kindly granted that request. He looks forward to returning, he added.

Dane shot to fame for his role as the good looking doctor McSteamy on Greys Anatomy. He starred on the hit medical drama until the shows ninth season in 2012.
The actor has been very open about his struggles in the past.
He announced he was going to rehab in 2011 for an addiction to painkillers from a sports injury and he and his wife Rebecca Gayheart made headlines in 2009 when they became the victims of a leaked, nude video with former Miss Teen USA Kari Ann Peniche.
Dane married Gayheart, who is also an actor, in 2004 and they have since had two girls Billie, seven, and Georgia, five.

Hi, my name is Craig Zobel, and I directed The Hunt. What? The scene youre about to watch is a scene between Ma and Pa, played by Amy Madigan and Reed Birney, in which theyre cleaning up after having just killed one of the people theyre hunting, and this is really one of the first times in the story that you get to hear kind of the reasons why this one set of people might be hunting this other set of people. Those people? Sorry. Black people. African-Americans. Honey, its Privilege, Julius. Its perfectly fine to call them black again. [LAUGHS] According to who? NPR. Our hope in the scene was that we would, through comedy, be able to expose one sides assumptions about the other sides beliefs, as well as mocking the hunters at the same time. You there? Hey! Were here. We got three of them Molly, Moses, and Mr. Whimper. Yeah, great. Liberty got Damon Lindelof and Nick Cuse, the screenwriters screenplay pokes a lot of fun at liberals, and this is one of the scenes that kind of we first really lean into that. And this is really the kind of the first scene in the film that the kind of horror and action that you have been seeing truly is colored by Honey, thats poison! a sense of satire and comedy. You you rigged the soda? No. There are 43 grams of sugar in that bottle. Oh, good god, Miranda, you really scared me. I am not going to apologize for caring. The hunters have been playing a pretty elaborate game, and they have actually constructed this convenience store as a trap in order to catch the hunted. So everything in it has been designed to be appealing to a group of people that they feel like they arent a part of, and we did a lot of that kind of in the production design of the convenience store. And then, of course, this new person appears, and this is Betty Gilpin playing the role of Crystal, who turns out to be the main character in the film. This is kind of the first time that youre really interacting with her in the story. Youve seen her once or twice before, but shes been kind of an outsider on the edge. As she comes into this trap, this fake gas station, we see her process who these people are and quickly deduce that they are, in fact, some of the people that are hunting her, and that Crystal is one step ahead of everyone. Everything O.K.? I lost my wallet. Oh. Its for emergencies. You want some matches with that? I was really lucky in that I had cast Betty prior to casting Reed Birney in the film. But once I cast Reed, I discovered that Betty and Reed had been in a play together, where it was just a two-person play with the two of them before. Have you stopped crying from last week? Me neither. Neither have your regular recappers, who are out this week, but in their stead, I take onGreys Anatomy with you Youre in trusted hands because I pick you, I choose you, I love you. I dont need to loveGreys, but I want to, and sometimes I cant think about the bigger picture because Ive lost my shoe. But well all pull it together this week because in the wake of losing her mother, Maggie needs us. Shes about to join a sacredGreys club.
Its finally time for the last sister to become twisted. After losing her mom last week, we open with Maggie at her mothers grave a concept foreign to Mer and Amelia because you know, dark and twisty hall of fame. Amelia has her oxycodone background and Meredith has, well, everything. But after the graveyard, its time for Maggies first day back.
Riggs catches Arizona and Mennick carpooling in together, which is what it is. We turn a blind eye to Mennick because there are bigger fish to fry. Example: Arizonas pregnant patient, whom she placed a shunt in last week. No matter how much Arizona wants to make a point that she and Mennick werent justcarpooling in together, her patients heart surgery is more complicated than matters of the bedroom. Maggie hears about it and immediately wants in because thats what surgeonsdo when tragedy happens: cut stuff. But this is Dr. Herman fetal surgery-level serious, and not everyone is so sure shes ready for it. And when the patient overhears that maybe Maggie shouldnt be taking it on, they want answers.
Stephanie is stuck with Cross, and honestly, she has no time for it. Its what makes Stephanie wonderful. She calls in DeLuca to try to shame Cross into getting out of bed, but when he protests that hes actually sick, Stephanie goes to step two: rectal exam. But after landing himself in an MRI, it does appear that Cross has a point after all. He has diverticulitis, an annoyed Stephanie is going to operate, and you can only think with a case so simple, thiscant go well, right?
Poor Meredith has little knowledge of when someone is okay or not okay. Its a symptom of being kind of twisted your whole life. And when everyone believes that maybe Maggie needs a break, Meredith argues otherwise because she operated through a miscarriage remember? Yikes. But after enough pushing, Amelia and Meredith try to question Maggie on whether or not shes ready, and she doesnt love it at all because today is her day. Her First Day Back From Dead Mom Day, and theyre not there for her, yall! But Maggie goes into surgery with Arizona, who asks her one last time if shes okay because this is tiny humans, and shehas to be on for the tiny humans. But after removing the tumor like a complete boss, Maggie freezes when the baby starts coding. What needs to be done? Who knows Maggie isnt talking.

Not unlike many of the auteurs of the New Hollywood of the 1970s and beyond, Francis Ford Coppolas moviemaking mantra often came down to What would Hitchcock do?
The way in which Coppola shot the sequence detailing Virgil Sollozzos (Al Lettieri) death inThe Godfatherbears no exception to this rule. In thisillustrative video analysis by Glass Distortion, The Godfather: Sollozzos Death Script to Screen Analysis, Coppolas voice-over narration of the scene explains: Hitchcock was such a master about manipulating information for the audienceusually telling you things so that you were equipped to enjoy what you were seeing. Rather than withholding information, he would give you information.
Watching the text from Coppola and Mario Puzos screenplay pop up over eachshot, the function of the information given on-screen in this sceneparticularly Michael Corleones (Al Pacino) abrupt, emphatic shift from speaking Italian to speaking English, and his ignoring of his associate Peter Clemenzas (Richard S. Castellano) instructions on what to do to whack Sollozzois made clear.
The scenes awkward missteps, jarring sound mix andsense of frozen time and space, Coppola explains, all serve the films character development, defining Michaels cool, calm execution of the duties his newly adopted mob lifestyle has thrusted upon him. After all, this scene depicts not only the death of two of Michaels adversaries, but also the death of his innocence as a civilian.The tension betweenthe former self that Michael is shedding and the new self that he is transforming into in this violent baptism of sorts is the emotional core around which Coppolas shot and script design is structured.
As the scene starts, Coppola stresses that Rushing this would ruin it. Otherwise, the scenecant be ruined. The directorsstatement doesnt simplydemonstrate his confidence in both his performers and the aforementioned formal elements. Rather, his assertion reminds moviemakers of the peace of mind thats achieved when a scenes moving parts are designed to work in synchronicity. By designing the scenes intensity to be dependent upon well-executed pacing, Coppola was able to cast its final, bloody conclusion against the off-kilter presence of his extras in the background. This approach creates a dissonance between the relaxed, oblivious restaurant patrons and the mile-a-minute heart rate of Michaels character as he kills Sollozzo and Captain Mark McCluskey (Sterling Hayden).

There are two ways of looking at anatomy: Gross, or macroscopic, anatomy and microscopic anatomy.
In medicine, gross anatomy, macro anatomy, or topographical anatomy refers to the study of the biological structures that are visible to the naked eye.
The study of gross anatomy may involve dissection or noninvasive methods. The aim is to collect data about the larger structures of organs and organ systems.
In dissection, the scientist cuts open the human or animal cadaver is cut open and examines its organs.
Endoscopy, inserting a tube with a camera at the end, might be used to study structures within living animals. Endoscopy is performed either through the mouth or through the rectum, so the gastrointestinal tract is often the primary organ of interest.
There are also less invasive methods. For example, to study the blood vessels of living animals or humans, the scientist may insert an opaque dye into the animal that will highlight the circulatory system when imaging technology, such as angiography.
Techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), or x-ray also reveal information about the inside of a living body.
Medical and dental students perform dissection as part of their practical work in gross human anatomy during their studies. They may dissect a human corpse.
Students of gross anatomy will need to learn about the major body systems.

Although these systems have different names, they all work interdependently, meaning they work together and depend on each other.
Microscopic anatomy, also known as histology, is the study of cells and tissues of animals, humans and plants that are too small to been seen with the naked eye.
By looking at tissue under the microscope, we can learn about the architecture of the cells, how they are put together, and how they relate to each other.
For example, if a person has cancer, examining the tissue under the microscope will reveal how the cancer cells are acting and how they affect normal human tissue.
This commonly involves studying tissues and cells using histological techniques such as sectioning and staining, and then looking at them under an electron or light microscope.
Sectioning involves cutting tissue into very thin slices so they can be examined. Histological stains are added to biological structures, such as tissues, to add colors or to enhance colors so they can be more easily distinguished when they are examined, especially if different structures are next to each other.
Histology is vital for the understanding and advancement of medicine, veterinary medicine, biology, and other aspects of life science.
Histology is used for:
Teaching: Histology slides are used in teaching labs to help students who are learning about the microstructures of biological tissues.
Diagnosis: Tissue samples, or biopsies, are taken from patients and sent to the lab for analysis by a histologist.
Forensic investigations: The microscopic study of biological tissues can help explain why, for example, somebody unexpectedly died.
Autopsies: As in forensic investigations, biological tissues from deceased people and animals can be analyzed, so that investigators may better understand the causes of death.
Archeology: Biological samples from archeological sites can provide useful data about what was going on in history or ancient history.
Histotechnicians, also known as histology technicians, histology technologists, biomedical scientists, medical scientists, or medical laboratory technicians, work in histology laboratories.
These specialists use special skills to process samples of biological tissues that may come from patients, from suspects if it is a forensic lab, or from corpses. Using a series of techniques, they prepare tiny slices of tissue, known as sections. They mount the slices on slides and add histology stains. The slides are then examined by a histopathologist, or pathologist, for analysis.
The skills of a histologist must be meticulous and precise to deliver top-quality samples for examination under a microscope by histopathologist.
A pathologist is a medical doctor who has graduated from medical school and then goes on to specialize in pathology through their residency. Residency programs are required for all specialties, and for pathology, the training is an additional four years.
They examine cells and tissues and interpret what they see, so that they or others can use the data to decide on treatment for an illness, determine how somebody was injured or died, and so on.
Histopathology is a sub-discipline of pathology. It is the microscopic study of disease tissues and cells.
Most health-care related studies need training in gross anatomy and histology. Paramedics, physical therapists, occupational therapists, medical doctors, orthotists and prosthetists, and biological scientists all need a knowledge of anatomy.
Some websites offer a tour of the human body which explains the different organs and how they are made up. The National Institutes of Health offer a range of resources about the different parts of the body.

Hi, Im Leigh Whannell. Im the writer and director of the film, The Invisible Man. A lot of the film deals with paranoia and whether or not Elisabeth Mosss character is really seeing something. And this is a scene where shes actually dealing with physical presence and a physical threat. We dont get to meet our antagonist, Adrian. You dont have to learn a lot about him as the film goes on. And so I wanted the threat to suddenly become very real. And I thought it would be an interesting way to shoot a scene like this where two people are fighting, but you can only see one of the participants. [RUNNING WATER] And I could see that in my minds eye. I could see what that would look like if we pulled it off well. Turns out it was quite hard to achieve. It took a while to get there, to get the thing on screen that I could see in my head when I was writing. But we got here, eventually. [LOUD NOISE] Theres obviously moments in this scene that Elisabeth Moss could not perform. Shes not a trained stunt performer. She cannot be thrown across a table. So then the question becomes, how do we shoot Elisabeth Moss and then cut to somebody else? So in the middle of the shot, we have to match frame a stunt person in. And then, so shell do the actual throw and shell get thrown, and then shell land, and we have to freeze her and then match frame Elisabeth back in. And it was very technically difficult when she was interacting with the stunt performer in a green suit and when she wasnt. Because as we found out when we did visual effects, its kind of easier to add something to a frame with CGI. Its hard to remove something, especially a human body in a bright green suit. Like if this person is moving and blocking the other actor, and what are we going to do with that moment where the stunt performers arm is blocking Elisabeths face. But I know that the visual effects guys, a company called Cutting Edge, in Sydney, had a lot of sleepless nights to get it looking amazing. [BREAKING DISH]

To steal a line from the commercials about Las Vegas, the Mavericks and their fans certainly hope what happens at American Airlines Center stays at American Airlines Center.
They really dont want it following them on the road.
Their six-game home stand longest of the season is history and the Mavericks ended with a pedestrian 3-3 record. It just doesnt get more average than that.
So how did they get there? Its not rocket science.
The numbers clearly showed that the Mavericks didnt deserve anything better than what they got during their 11-day stay at AAC. Here, well take a closer look.
First, the good news: The Mavericks averaged 115 points per game and only gave up 111.8 during the six games. Pretty much all of that differential can be traced to the 18-point win over Philadelphia in the finale of the home stand.
Beyond that, the numbers scream out that the Mavericks were utterly average on the home stand.
Rebounding: The Mavericks averaged 44.8 rebounds per game. Their opponents averaged 45.3 boards. That doesnt sound like much, but for a team that has by and large been good at retrieving missed shots most of the season, it wasnt good enough.
Defense: They only forced 9.8 turnovers per game on the home stand. Thats a ridiculously low number. Thats also part of the reason why opponents averaged 91 field-goal attempts per game to 87.5 for the Mavericks. Anyway you slice it, thats 3.5 more chances to score points for the other team. Opponents also were basically even at the free-throw line with the Mavericks.
Free-throw shooting. The Mavericks were 72.3 percent from the line. They shot more free throws than their six opponents, but made less. Thats a lot of free points left on the table.
When you add it up, it was a .500-worthy effort on the home stand.
On the bright side, the Mavericks at least finished it with a solid win against Philadelphia. That creates a smidge of momentum that they can take with them to Golden State on Tuesday and Sacramento on Wednesday.
The Mavericks were about as good as theyve been all season in a 68-41 second half against the Sixers.
When our guys with that kind of force, our crowd is a different kind of crowd, coach Rick Carlisle said. We got great fans, but when we play with this kind of force, our fans take it to another level and it makes it a lot harder on opponents.
And, considering Kristaps Porzingis did not play on the home stand (its possible, Carlisle said, he could return on the road trip), the Mavericks at the least were able to tread water.
Real proud of the guys for hanging in, Carlisle said. This has been a very difficult, challenging stretch for a lot of reasons the frequency of the games, the level of the opponents, some of the losses have been very close and difficult. And after last night, its easy to get down. But guys hung in.
The Mavericks have been better on the road all season than theyve been at AAC. With nine of their next 11 games on the road, they hope they can make a charge during the upcoming stretch.

Hello, this is Josh Safdie. And this is Benny Safdie. Were the directors of Uncut Gems. Were jumping in here after a good stretch of Howards life. But he was just abandoned and ditched at a practice facility, so hes a little concerned about his gem. And hes here back with his family, his domicile, basically, his pack. And were meeting him in the middle of a status exchange with another Long Island family. What greater setting to be than in a school play, a mandatory attendance thing. And youre here with people who I think identify setting more than anything. O.K. What are you going to do for Passover? Is your sister coming? Uh, yeah. What are doing? Who do you got? Watching for LeBron. I got six different people playing six different games. Hey, were all making salt. Hey! Who tapped me? Who was that? I call this the head turning scene because theres so many head turns back and forth, back and forth, between each person, like perspective switches. Whats going on in Howards life. And this here, the narrative here, these two gentlemen are a reminder of the bigger threat in Howards life, the money that he owes, and figuring out a way to get into it. Overt narrative plotting is always something we feel so self-conscious about, so having it come through a Where you going? Daddys got to game in jest with his kid. The way he bonds with everybody is through jest, and the classic tap shoulder gag actually leads him to the reminder of the things that are lurking behind him. And it was on this scene, I remember the AD was trying to have everybody be quiet, and we got very upset, because we wanted everybody to be talking. In this scenario, everybody needed to be loud, because it needed to reflect a real auditorium. And of course, it causes problems later on with editing, but the whole point is to get the performances to be real. This action sequence, as well call it, we shot at the end of a 14, 15-hour day. And I kind of like that pressure, because I believe that violence is sloppy. It is unchoreographed. It is matter-of-fact. And that little sequence in the hallway we just saw was that. And here This too. This as well. One take, remember? And his daughter thats probably one of the most embarrassing things that can happen to you. Your psychotic, maniacal, loving weird dad is running through I actually love watching certain parts of the movie when you know it was the last thing you filmed on a day. Something that always that scene in the hallway is one of those. This sequence, this exterior sequence here, Darius spent a day or two lighting, I think a day of pre-lighting. And Eric Bogosian, who plays Arno, his brother-in-law, this is his introduction to his character, and to meet him in slow motion where you cant hear him, I find it to be even more menacing. And Eric actually said because he had done that drive a bunch of times. The first time he pulled up, and he saw Sandler run out of that school wearing loafers, running on that grass, getting tackled by these guys, he says, O.K., this is a different kind of movie. I remember when we did that scene, it was a very complicated choreography with a big cart, and a camera. And you kind of feel the pressure of everybody saying, oh, I wonder how theyre going to do this with non-actors, all this stuff. And on the first take, everybody just nailed it. It was very exciting.

Owen gets some shocking news about his sister and is thrown off for the rest of the day. He tells Amelia that his sister has been found alive. He hasnt spoken to her yet and is worried it might not all be true. All he knows is that she was being held in a basement. Amelia offers to help and arranges for her to be transferred to their hospital.
Riggs gets kicked out of Mers house because she doesnt want the kids to know hes there. But she seems pretty impressed when she sees Riggs interacting with a patients sister and invites him over to meet her kids. However, when Meredith gets home from work she finds out the news about Owens sister, the one that Riggs was engaged to. Meredith decides that she wants to be the one to tell Riggs about it.
Stephanie finishes her therapy and gets to start back on rounds thanks to Weber. Eliza is not happy about it and doesnt want her working with patients yet. Jackson lets Stephanie help him on his patient that came in from a risqu car accident. He keeps asking to see the women he was brought in with and so Stephanie agrees to help him. That means that Stephanie now has to worry about her safety and the little girls. She makes a decision to set him on fire when hes trying to get the sprinklers to go off. But when he lands near some gas tanks a big explosion goes off.
Then they find out that the man was actually trying to rape her in the car. When the attacker realizes the cops know whats going on, he threatens Stephanie with a blade he stole and makes her help him. The situation gets even more dramatic when they get trapped in a hallway with a little girl that wandered away from her family.
Alex tracks down Jos husband at a conference and decides to approach him. After some drinks it becomes clear that the guy, Paul, has some real anger issues. And then Alex gets a little crazy and beats him up, saying, This is from your wife. Except never mind because that all happened in his head. He also thinks about going up and threatening him, but worries that it would lead to Jo being found and killed. In the end Alex does nothing.
As Fitzs term in the White House is winding down, a new client keeps OPA in business. But as optimism spreads through the press room, OPA, and Fitzs bedroom, an uneasy feeling lurks.
Sure, the threat of Peus and Samantha is over. But there are still a few more episodes this season and a few heads left to roll. Literally. David receives a parting gift from Rowan the head of Samantha. David, the lovable sap that he is, wants Jake to swab it for DNA and find out Samanthas true identity.
Meanwhile, the remaining members of OPA Quinn, Huck, and Charlie get on the case left cold by a podcast. The President is narrowing down his pardon list, and while looking into the case files, Quinn finds a case that hits her gut. It is not a slam dunk with hard evidence, but it is the case that pushes Quinn against the President and by extension, Olivia.
This Olivia, as Quinn says, is no longer Her Olivia. Instead, the former White Hat Gladiator leader is building cabinets and keeping friends in high places. Perhaps that is the point. Its time for Olivia to step away from OPA, to pursue other interests. As Quinn and Huck become convinced that their pardon is worthwhile, Quinn earns her backbone and the head office at OPA.
Things are not going as smooth for Mellie and Marcus over at the White House. They quickly discover that there is no room romance in their diverging career paths.
In order to protect the evidence, he must stay with the head. The only place with a big empty freezer is Abbys house. With David and Abby cooped up, they remember how much they mean to one another. But the sleepovers and takeout cant last forever, especially with a season finale on the horizon.
Fitzs final week in office highlights his connection to the people. Actually, it highlights his lack of connection to the people. Marcus points out that he is not as informed as he believes. Even his pardon, and the subsequent foundation mission statement, does not make him a better or more connected person. Its not even a start. But what else can we expect from Fitz this late in the game?
Jake finds a name, Gertrude, and an apartment in connection with the head. As it turns out, Gertrude and Peus are only pawns in a much bigger scheme. But who is the boss moving them around the board? And what do they want next?
Rowans goodbye lasts only a fleeting second as they discover that the woman pulling all the strings is Olivias mother.
Stray Observations: Olivia and Rowans goodbye was bittersweet. After all these two have been through, its always nice to be reminded how they interact when someones life is not at stake. Huck is Quinns maid of honor cue the cheesy smiles.
Remember how Margot and the Kensington firm used to be one step ahead of everyone? Well, the firms still there, but unfortunately, Margot has been the last to know just about everything in The Catch season 2.
At the beginning of the season 2 finale, Margot knew she was in trouble. Her own daughter and a woman who, at the very least, she loved hooking up with, took her hostage and threatened the firm that shes worked so hard to build up in Los Angeles.
What Felicity and Tessa didnt know was that the Mockingbird had already taken over the firm. That wasnt enough for Felicity to drop her quest for revenge, but in a brilliant show of solidarity, Tessa saved her familys life. We always knew she fit right in.
Nobody had even heard of the Mockingbird before last week, but before The Catch season 2 ended, he would have two different faces. The first was that of Tommy Vaughan. Nothing ruins your big boss charade quite like your big sister pulling a gun on you, though, so he cracked pretty quickly.
It turns out the real Mockingbird is the brother of another power female on The Catch. We felt the sting of betrayal right along with Margot, Tessa, Ben, and even Justine when Rhys was revealed. So apparently, this whole season was just a brilliant power play on Rhys part to gain back control of the firm. Genius, but heartbreaking!
Because of Rhys betrayal, everyone had their choices to make. Margot and Tessa obviously had to escape, so everyone else basically had to choose whether to help them or hunt them. Justine chose the latter, while naturally, everyone else chose the former. Once Bens kid was in the mix, there was really no choice at all.
Ben had to go with them, but Danny chose to stay. It would have been cute if he had gone with Margot, but we really cant see him escaping into a life of crime just yet, so well just be happy if he keeps his promise to not fall in love with anyone else.
His heart isnt the only one we have to worry about getting stolen. Notice how Ethan so thoughtfully stepped in to take Bens place, right beside Alice? Hes far from done making his move, and since everyone else is basically in jail or trying to escape it, this might be his chance.
As of now, The Catch still has not been renewed for season 3, but with all of this unresolved, were really hoping we get to see more!

Friday evening, in an off-and-on drizzle, I was heading for the emergency room at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Only this trip was going to be earth-shaking for me.
Debra Huff, late wife Hazels No. 1 daughter, was again the driver. We had made a quick food stop at Bojangles on Route 40 East. We also were meeting her husband, Red, to give him my full oxygen tanks.
The words of my long-time friend Dr. Steve Lewis were still fresh on my mind. What was to come during the next three days startled me though I had discussed the scenario before.
The question I was to be asked several times during my stay in the intensive care unit was What are your wishes should your heart stop beating?
Have you ever been asked that question?
I had never heard it even in 2005, when I flat-lined three times, twice at Carilion Franklin Memorial only to be brought back twice by friend Dr. Charles Lane and once in the Roanoke Memorial ER.
My recent trip was different from anything I expected.
The week before, at about 9 a.m. on a Friday, I was the first of many at Roanoke Memorial on the fourth floor to undergo an upper gastro-intestinal operation or procedure.
It was to find and stop a bleeding stomach ulcer and several smaller ones that had been the cause of blood loss since at least mid-April. I had never before had a doctor even mention the fact that I could have had an ulcer.
It took them just over an hour to complete the procedure and I was back in my room feeling as if nothing had happened except I felt a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I shed tears of joy.
This experience was interesting in the fact I received a unit of blood the evening before the operation that had been pre-warmed to the point it felt warm to my hands before entered the IV in my arm.
And the best part of it all was this fairly new procedure allowed me to receive the blood in less than half the time, or two rather than four hours. A very sharp intern doctor had two very good nurses do a tough procedure.
Amy Dillon of Franklin County is the niece of Posey Dillon, the Rocky Mount fire chief, and veteran firefighter Danny Altice, both of whom were killed in a July 26, 2010, firetruck crash.
She was assisted by Brooke Spencer of Patrick County. They installed a port in my neck and connected with my heart. That allowed medicine or whatever to be given in addition to the two IVs placed in my arms.
The area was numbed and I listened with intense interest as the young doctor with the French name talked them through the procedure. It was done in ER Room No. 15. I hate to say it, but the port was removed Saturday morning.
What a waste, I recalled thinking.
As the nurse pulled the line from my neck after I took a deep breath to help with the pain. Yeah, right.
Since everything went so well and all of the ulcer bleeding had been stopped and the X-ray of my chest turned out well, Red and Debra picked me up and took me home Monday afternoon.
Peggy Brown, late wife Hazels No. 4 daughter, had come over Sunday night with some great chocolate dessert she had made. Somehow she slept in a chair and spent the night in my room just in case I needed special assistance. Number 2 and 3 daughters, Polly and Teresa, also came to my aid.
So now Im back writing the column without missing a lick and Im going to keep going more as I get back my strength.
I have a couple of hot stories I look forward to writing. One is about 91-year-old Marie Perdue.
Book It: The cover of Phillip Garretts new book The Chronicles of a Sophisticated Redneck features an outline of Virginia.
Garrett, whose mother was director of nurses at Franklin Memorial at one time, and father, who worked for a government agency, wrote about his growing up days, and he made them interesting.
There is a photo in the book of Phillip when he played football for the Franklin County High School Eagles that either the late Phillip Nichols or I took during photo day his senior year.
A book signing is set from 8 a.m. until noon Sept. 16, at the Farmers Market on Franklin Street.
Great Grand Opening: Chris Prillaman of Ferrum, owner of Twin Creeks Distillery, had a super grand opening Saturday at his new location on Henry Road, a heartbeat away from Prillaman Switch Road.
I hate that I missed it and dont have any photos to use because I was Roanoke Memorial. That is the only thing that kept me away and I was looking forward to the bid day. Special guests were Henry Law and his famous father, Amos.
Henry has opened his distillery near the county line at Penhook. He is producing his fathers special recipe under the brand name of Laws Choice. I will be doing a special story on his operation in the near future,
Saving a Hummer: My daughter Kathy found a sick little humming bird on her apartment deck and a larger female pecking the other bird on the head. Kathy was upset.
She took the hummer inside her apartment, put it in a special box, left food next to it and had to go to work. She continued to nurse the bird as it slowly improved.
A wildlife vet she knew who comes to her store, Fresh Market, stopped in one day and Kathy, an assistant manager there, asked her about the bird. Well, the vet took the little hummer home with her and the story hopefully has a happy ending.
Kathy said she talked to the vet, who had locked herself out of her car. She was ready to release the bird and did so perhaps yesterday.
And finally: I was coming to work yesterday and saw three walkers heading toward North Main and I think at least two of them were struggling with trying to carry a bowling ball.
Now Ive forgotten how much one of those balls weigh, but I know they are not light and carrying something heavy around with only three small holes had to be adding a lot to their exercise program. Good luck!

Given the pall that was cast over Season 13 of Greys Anatomy by everything from Callies absence to Alex and Jos estrangement not to mention Minnicks reign of terror it was music to fans ears when Giacomo Gianniotti (DeLuca) told TVLine that the ABC dramas upcoming Season 14 was going to be funnier sexier lighter than its predecessor.
But heres the thing: We Greys viewers are a greedy lot. And, though funnier sexier lighter is a fine start, we want more. (Besides, this isnt the first time weve been promised a much lighter tone and the last time we heard that, the show flung Callie and Arizona into a bitter custody battle, had a patient attack Mer and killed off Wilmer Valderrama!)
So, while awaiting the series two-hour comeback (Thursday, Sept. 28, at 8/7c), weve compiled a list of our fondest wishes for the upcoming season, ranging from the starts of new romances to the return of a former favorite. Ever since the last World T20 final, when he was hit for four sixes in the final over of the chase, Ben Stokes has been the subject of some ridicule, especially when sold for a record sum in the IPL auction. Two days before he goes back to his house of horrors, Eden Gardens, Ben Stokes produced one of the great Twenty20 innings. And he did so while hobbling with a cramp in his calf in the last three overs of the chase. Nothing can wipe off what happened in Kolkata last year, but Stokes has done enough in this IPL season to quell those doubts around him.
Coming into this match, Stokes had won two match awards but both for bowling. He had scored only 127 from seven innings before this, but in Pune, coming in to bat in the second over, at the fall of the third wicket. he scored 63% of his team's total. He had batted sooner in an innings only four times before that.
In his 126 a night before, a near-perfect T20 innings, David Warner batted with a 78% control percentage, which is phenomenal when you are attempting to hit a boundary every second ball. Stokes displayed 79% control. That control percentage was bound to be higher because he hit only one boundary every five balls as against Warner's one every three balls, but the fact Stokes couldn't afford to keep swinging made this innings special.
Stokes also struggled against legspinner Ankit Soni. He picked the wrong 'uns out of the back of the hand, but the sliders out of the front of the hand kept going past his outside edge. The 11 balls Soni bowled to Stokes, for seven runs, brought his control percentage down. So Stokes had to strike against others but in a calculated manner because four wickets fell within the first six overs, and because MS Dhoni faced 10 dots in his first 12 balls.
So Stokes struck against Ravindra Jadeja to break the shackles, and then kept finding the boundary every time the asking rate threatened to go out of hand.
The wow moment
Things can happen before you realise in T20 cricket. You are four down early, you are looking to arrest the slide, and two spinners can run through six overs in no time. When you look up at the board, you can be staring at an unachievable asking rate. The previous 19 balls had got Rising Pune just nine runs, with the asking rate shooting from 8.5 to 10. Then Stokes swung. Bang and bang, Ravindra Jadeja was hit over midwicket and long-on. The innings was back on track, and this was the last over Jadeja bowled because Gujarat Lions couldn't get rid of Stokes at all.
