Alberobello - American actor Patrick Dempsey played a starring role at the Giro d'Italia Friday - when he donned a vintage pink jersey and rode with the peloton for the opening kilometres of the seventh stage at Castrovillari.

Dempsey, who played a doctor in the popular television series Grey's Anatomy, was appearing as a guest of the BMC team, who were celebrating on Thursday after seeing their Swiss rider Silvan Dillier clinch the fifth stage.

Dempsey appeared at the start line of Castrovillari and was also pictured on the riders' podium, where he was asked who his favourite cyclist of all-time was.

"Merckx," replied the 51-year-old American, referring to retired Belgian legend Eddy Merckx - generally considered the greatest stage racer of all time.

Dempsey then hopped on his bike, clipped into his cleats and rode alongside Luxembourg's Bob Jungels - wearing the real pink jersey as race leader - for the opening kilometres of the route which lead to the official start line.

Friday's stage is a 217 km ride from Castrovillari to Albrobello, close to Bari in the 'heel' of Italy's boot.

Mayor’s attorney: Murray’s anatomy disproves sex abuse claim – seattlepi.com

'This is the heart of the allegations, and they are false'

By Daniel DeMay, SeattlePI

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray's attorney said Tuesday that a recent medical exam contradicts claims made about the mayor's anatomy by a man who says Murray sexually abused him as a boy.

Responding to a detailed description offered in the sex abuse lawsuit, Murray's personal attorney Robert Sulkin said Tuesday that a doctor examined Murray and found no evidence of the mole described as being on his scrotum in the lawsuit. Sulkin said the doctor's report also found no evidence that any mole was removed from the area.

"This is game changing," Sulkin said. "This is the heart of the allegations, and they are false. ...

"If you think about it, the accuser provided false information to his own lawyers. ... The case should be dropped."

Mayor's attorney: Murray's anatomy disproves sex abuse claim

A Seattle-area man filed the lawsuit last week claiming Murray had paid him for sex at least 50 times over the course of several years in the 1980s, starting when the man was just 15 years old.

Last Thursday, Murray's personal spokesperson and then his personal attorney both claimed the suit was politically motivated as Murray, a Democrat with a long history in public office, is seeking his second mayoral term this year.

Murray made a statement in person Friday, telling reporters he has no intention of resigning or ending his bid for reelection.

Attorneys for the man bringing the suit issued a statement following Sulkin's news conference, saying Murray's attorney had not responded to offers to depose the man, who went by D.H. in the suit, within the week.

"Instead, the Mayor's team hired their own medical witness to look at the Mayor's private parts and declared that which nobody in the public can verify until long after the election filing deadline of May 19," attorneys wrote in the statement. "We look forward to fighting the merits of this lawsuit in the appropriate venue and exploring the need for an independent medical exam as ordered by the court."

Sulkin said the mayor would submit to such an exam if ordered by a judge.

In the suit, D.H. included specific details about Murray's apartment at the time, his phone number and his genitals.

Specifically, he described a "unique mole" on Murray's scrotum in the complaint.

Sulkin said Tuesday the mole was like the fingerprint of the case.

"This is why it was put in (the suit) and it's false," he said.

In the story first reported by The Seattle Times, two other men were interviewed who had previously made similar claims to those detailed by D.H. in the suit. At the time those claims were made -- 2007 and 2008 -- one man began working on a suit, but his lawyer ultimately dropped the case. The man called various media and other lawmakers (Murray was in the state Senate at the time), but the Times and other media didn't report on the story, according to the Times report.

Sulkin called out the Times for "rushing" the story before giving Murray a chance to debunk the claims.

The anatomy of Harjit Sajjan’s Afghanistan operation apology – Macleans.ca

Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan speaks during a conference on foreign affairs in Ottawa on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016. (Sean Kilpatrick/CP)

A day before he backtracked from his false claim that he was the architect of Operation Medusa, one of the biggest and most dangerous missions of the war in Afghanistan, Minister of National Defence Harjit Sajjan inexplicably and stubbornly stood by them in a correspondence with me. What happened over the last five days might be called the anatomy of an apology.

The controversy stems from an April 18 speech the Minister delivered at Conflict Prevention and Peacekeeping in a Changing World, a conference in New Delhi, India. On my first deployment to Kandahar in 2006, the Minister said, I was the architect of Operation Medusa where we removed 1,500 Taliban fighters off the battlefield and I was proudly on the main assault. It was an odd comment. Though Sajjan was a veteran of the 2006 operation, he was in no way the key planner. That role is typically credited to retired Major General David Fraser, then the commander of the Multinational Brigade for Regional Command South, and the man who organized and led Operation Medusa.

On Monday, April 24, I began hearing from a number of senior military veterans who called Sajjans claim about his role in Medusa an exaggeration and demanded that he correct the record. None of the sources would go on the record because none wanted to question the legitimate bravery Sajjan showed during the 2006 battle and his three tours of duty in Afghanistan. Still, they regarded his comments in India as an inappropriate embellishment of his role. Sajjan had as much to do with designing Medusa as I did with designing NAFTA, one source told me.

What did Sajjan really do in Medusa? Back in 2006, then-Brigadier General Fraser wrote a letter commending Sajjanspersonal bravery in battle. Fraser wrote that Sajjans analysis was so compelling that it drove a number of large scale theatre-resourced efforts, including Operation Medusa that resulted in the defeat of the largest Taliban cell yet identified in Afghanistan, with over 1,500 Taliban killed or captured. So Sajjans bravery as an intelligence officer was never in question. But thats a long way from being the architect of the operation. I contacted Fraser to ask about Sajjans recent claim, but he flat out refused to comment.

On Wednesday, April 26, I wrote to the Department of National Defence and asked why the Minister had called himselfthe architect of Medusa. I do not want to diminish the extraordinary role the Minister played, I wrote. However, I have had feedback from several sources who suggest the use of the term architect is an exaggeration.I can find no citation where the Minister is credited as the architect of Operation Medusa. He was an important member of the team, but no one I spoke to saw him as the architect. That role has been credited to the General, in this case, Fraser. As this was a major military operation with many senior military planners, can you please tell me if it is accurate for the Minister to say he wasthe architect of the operation? Did he plan it? Did he originate the plan? Was he the leader of the operation plan? Was he involved in the planning or did he provide Intel that was then verified and used? Why did the Minister call himself the architect of Medusa?

MORE: Behind the sunglasses: Harjit Sajjans rise to cabinet

I fully expected the Minister to clarify his role, thinking he would repeat what Fraser had written back in 2006that his intelligence had played a key role in the operation. Instead, he avoided the question and tried to skate. Operation Medusa wassuccessful because ofthe leadership, service and sacrificeof many dedicated women and men in the Canadian Armed Forces, Minister Sajjan wrote. I was proud to have served with extraordinary Canadians, US and Afghan soldiers who made Operation Medusa successful.

I immediately wrote back to say that this did not address the fundamental question: Why did the Minister call himself the architect of Medusa? I asked his department to further clarify, but they refused to say anything else. I dont have anything to add beyond what I just sent, the Ministers communications person wrote.

It was odd that they were sticking by the Ministers original statement in India, which was so patently misleading. Medusa involved over 1,000 Canadian soldiers working in a coordinated attack with British and Dutch troops against the Taliban position in Panjwai district. It was a complex, high-level operation led and developed by Fraser and his planning department. Other key planners of Medusa included the highly-respected Lieutenant-Colonel Omer Lavoie, then commander of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment. At the time, Sajjan was a major, nowhere close to the top of the command structure and so nowhere close to being the architect of the operation. Sajjans second claim has a grain of truth to it being on the final assault but he was present like thousands of other soldiers, one source said. But from what I gather, he [was] not engaged in combat. The military personnel I spoke to were clearly furious about the Ministers comment.

As the week wore on, more veterans contacted reporters about the Ministers claim. Suddenly, on Thursday, I got another message from Minister Sajjans office. They had a new, updated statement from the Minister. He was no longer going to try to spin his way out of it. My comments were in no way intended to diminish the role that my fellow soldiers and my superiors played in Operation Medusa, Sajjan wrote. What I should have said was that our military successes are the result of the leadership, service and sacrifice of the many dedicated women and men in the Canadian Forces. I regret that I didnt say this then, but I want to do so now. Operation Medusa wassuccessful because of[the] leadership of General Fraser and the extraordinary team with whom I had the honour of serving.

Within hours of that email landing in my inbox, the brilliant Postmedia reporter Matthew Fisher published a story about the military backlash against Minister and his apology. The controversy erupted immediately.

It remains a mystery as to why the Minister would make the false claim in the first place and even more baffling why, when I asked him to clarify earlier in the week, he decided to stick to it. There is an old saying: Victory has a thousand fathers, defeat is an orphan, one source wrote to me. There were tens of thousands of architects for Medusa in Canada, NATO, Kabul and Kandahar. Dave Fraser was key to it, influenced by those thousands, and he wrote and spoke many complimentary things about all of them. They all of them could and should receive the credit. God knows, they would have received the blame if things had not worked out.

Minister Sajjan did heroic things in the service of Canada during a dangerous period of war. He risked his life. There was simply no need to embellish that. It is a terrible shame that might tarnish his service.

Ruby’s heart condition not an episode of Grey’s Anatomy – Krugersdorp News

Ruby was diagnosed with a rare, yet very destructive disease called Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, 19 months ago, and the doctor only gave her 24 months to live. Time is running out for her.

Most 15-year-old girls want fancy clothes, cute shoes and tickets to their favourite boy bands concert. But Ruby Ballack just wants to live to see her next birthday.

She was diagnosed with a rare, yet very destructive, disease called Restrictive Cardiomyopathy 19 months ago and at that time the doctor only gave her 24 months to live.

Time is running out for Ruby. She recently had a 3,2cm blood clot in her heart. Luckily it has dissolved. Due to poor blood flow in her heart chambers there is a major risk of blood clots forming again. And lets not even mention the three ICU admissions she had in December 2016 alone.

Also read:Hope towers over teens short life expectancy

During a recent visit to the hospital, Ruby was very ill and spent a few days in ICU. Photo: Submitted

Ruby also experiences tremendous pressure on her heart because of the accumulation of fluid in her hearts lining. She has had multiple pericardial taps to remove the fluid, but because it accumulates within weeks, the fluid causes ongoing incredible pressure, shortness of breath and pain.

Recently her chest pains have become severe, her fatigue is unbearable, and her health has deteriorated by the minute. But not all is lost for Ruby. She is still waiting for the life-altering phone call that could save her life.

Ruby is on the transplant list and is waiting for both a heart and lungs. In the past year there have been two possible referrals for matching donors, but due to medical reasons, they did not materialise.

Its exhausting to feel ill all the time, said Ruby. And when moms phone rings late at night, I always think it might be THE phone call that gives me a heart.

Despite everything, Ruby and her family remain positive and hopeful. Wanda, Rubys mom, said she also anticipates the call every day, but knows that someone has to die for her daughter to live. We have family and friends who have lost their precious children and donated their organs to save the lives of others, while experiencing the utmost grief, said Wanda.

Ruby underwent numerous blood tests during the past few weeks and will continue to have her blood drawn to make sure there are no complications. Photo: Submitted.

They are mourning their loss daily and their lives will never be the same again. We are not praying for a donor or for organs we are praying that when a family is approached whos loved one could be a match for Ruby, they will find it in their hearts to say Yes.

She also said that they arent the only family going through the tough trial of waiting for an organ.

More than 4 300 people are on the transplant list, and I know each and every one of them is going through the same hard time as we are. In a good year, only about 515 patients receive their second chance at life.

Rubys veins are even visible through her knuckles due to her illness.

This is why Wanda, like other mothers, is an organ donor. They know that something good can come from someone elses death. One persons organs can save seven lives.

Wanda also stresses that there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to organ donation. Being an organ donor is completely free. You can be on the organ donor list without paying any monthly fees. Your family wouldnt have to pay for any medical costs if you donate your organs.

There are also other misconceptions when it comes to the process of donating organs when you die. When you are declared brain dead, the doctor will approach your family and inform them that you are an organ donor. They then ask your familys permission to harvest your organs. The ultimate decision stays with them.

Ruby was diagnosed with a rare, yet very destructive disease called Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, 19 months ago, and the doctor only gave her 24 months to live. Time is running out for her.

You can also choose which organs you want to donate and which you want to keep, and it takes only a few minutes to register as an organ donor.

If you are not a registered organ donor yet, please consider becoming one, as you can help save many people like Ruby. You have the power to change the statistics, said Wanda.

Anatomy of the Steelers drafts: Daniel McCullers – Steel City Underground (blog)

Anatomy of the Steelers drafts is an ongoing series leading up to the NFL Draft which examines the successes and failures of past Pittsburghdraft choices.

Todays article focuses on the Steelers 2014 sixth round draft pick, Daniel McCullers.

Easily one of the largest athletes during his time in college, and also now in the pros, McCullers has been playfully called many nicknames, including Big Dan and Shade Tree. The Steelers made waves by selecting the massive defensive tackle, and four-year starter with the Volunteers, in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft.

McCullers NFL.com Draft Profile is intriguing to look back on:

A big-boned, short-area plugger with some underachiever traits, McCullers has raw tools that could become special if he learns to harness the innate strength in his body and pairs with a DL coach who can refine his mechanics.

But thats not what stands out the most: NFL.com listed McCullers as a projected second/third round pick. Landing him several rounds later was a tremendous value, of course depending on where the Steelers had him on their own draft board.

The need was a great one. The Steelers were still attempting to replace several outstanding defensive linemen. Defensive end Aaron Smith retired early. Casey Hampton played a full career, but his potential suitors hadnt panned out. Pittsburgh was also trying to move on from Brett Keisel (who hadnt re-signed with the team until August of the same year).

While Cameron Heyward was a shining star, several other picks were underwhelming. Nick Williams, Rashon Harris, Thadeus Gibson and Doug Worthington are long forgotten names in Pittsburgh. Thats okay because most of those players were late round flyers. However, a bigger investment was made in the fourth round of 2012 (two seasons earlier) with the selection of nose tackle Alameda Taamu. Taamu was to inherit Hamptons role on the defense but found himself on-and-off of the roster due to off-field issues.

With Stephon Tuitt arriving earlier in the same draft as McCullers, the Steelers could now focus on a traditional defensive tackle. Big Dan would be that pick.

As the compensatory selections started in the sixth round, the New York Jets took WR Quincy Enunwa off the board, while two picks before Pittsburgh was on the clock, the Jets struck again by drafting QB Tajh Boyd. Boyd would later go to camp with the Steelers but never took a preseason snap.

OT Mitchell Van Dyk is another player who would enter a Steelers camp but would get picked following the selection of McCullers. Tight end Rob Blanchflower would be selected shortly around the same time by Pittsburgh (several picks later in the seventh round) while the only other player of note is Green Bay Packers WR Jeff Janis.

2017 could be the make or break year for McCullers NFL career. McCullers story has yet to be fully written, but he enters the last year of his rookie deal this season, after being passed over for starting roles by former Steeler Steve McLendon and 2016 third round draft pick Javon Hargrave. Big Dan finds himself as more of a situational player (i.e. goal line packages) and a special teams player than an effective every down player. In McCullers defense, Pittsburgh hasnt used a true 3-4 package for more than 1/3 of their defensive plays in years. In a pass happy league, linemen are often removed for defensive backs to cover receivers. This further limits the time McCullers has seen on the field and could make his render his services obsolete in the near future.

Anatomy of a Goal: Nemanja Nikolic’s Game Winner – Massive Report

Welcome to Anatomy of a Goal, where each week we dissect one goal (or near goal) from the previous weeks Columbus Crew SC match.

For Week Six of the 2017 MLS Season, we take a look at Nemanja Nikolics 22nd minute one-timer that gave the Chicago Fire its only goal in a 1-0 win over Crew-SC on Saturday.

Heres a look at the finish from the Fire striker.

Columbus started this match in a new formation: A 4-3-3 with three central midfielders. Without the dynamic wide play of Harrison Afful, Crew SC defended much more narrowly than usual, here providing very little pressure on the Chicago offense.

Crew SC midfielder Wil Trapp and right back Hector Jimenez had just broken up a Bastian Schweinsteiger led attack.

Keep note of the (many) players highlighted. The movement and positioning of these players lead to the Fires game winner. Here, Schweinsteigers pass to Fire winger David Accam is headed back to midfield by Hector Jimenez. Immediately after this ball is played back, and picked up by Fire center-back Joao Meira. All of Chicagos players are in the Black & Gold half.

As soon as Meira picks up the ball, Accam heads out into a wide position, attracting the attention of a following Jimenez and opening up a channel between the fullback and Crew SC center-back Alex Crognale.

What these images will show is this goal is a result of Nikolic doing exactly what he is best at, running the channels. A channel, is any lane of space that exists between two defending players. In this circumstance, the channel that the Chicago goal scorer occupies is in the space between Crew SCs right back, Jimenez, and center-back, Crognale.

Once he receives the ball, Fire midfielder Dax McCarty can immediately see that Nikolic is in the channel created by Jimenez heading out to cover Accam. Here we can see that the Crew SC right back is in a tight spot, with three men to mark. Winger Ethan Finlay went to pressure the ball, leaving Accam, Brandon Vincent, and Nikolic all under the responsibility of Jimenez. Its tough to cast blame in this situation, but both Artur and Trapp stayed in the middle of the pitch rather than covering one of the three men left to the Crew SC right back. If Artur (or even Trapp) had attempted to track Vincent, then perhaps Jimenez has time to check Nikolic before he gets all the way in on goal.

The above image shows the channel between Jimenez and Crognale just after McCarty made his entry pass to Nikolic. In the middle of the balls journey to the Fire striker, this gap is about 12 yards wide. Jimenez has begun to chase Nikolic and Crognale is just now aware of the pass and the run by Chicagos forward.

One second later, the channel is still 10 yards wide. Nikolic;s run beat Jimenez, and Crognale makes a slightly arced run to cut off the strikers angle.

From this second angle, you can see just how much space Nikolic has and how much room Crognale has to cover. Though the Crew center backs route to the ball is direct, he hesitates just long enough that Nikolic is able to get a few steps on him.

Nikolic is now in the Crew SC box and has yet to touch the ball. The Fire striker is in the process of taking his first-touch shot at goal. In this image, pay attention to the positioning of Crognale and Columbus goalkeeper Zack Steffen. Steffen, expecting his center back to cut off the far post, positions himself to protect the near post. Crognale now has to decide if he will attempt to get in front of the ball with a stab, a slide, or if he is able to get his body in front of Nikolic.

Here, you can see just how close Crognale is to the ball and to Nikolic. With the angle he has taken, the Crew SC center back should be able to slide and either clear the ball out before he touches Nikolic, or give fellow center-back Nicolai Naess (who is just to the right out of this image) time to step in front of the Chicago attacker.

Instead of sliding, Crognale decides to stay on his feet. However, the Crew SC center back is neither able to get a foot or his body in front of Nikolics shot.

Nikolics first-touch shot catches Steffen, who is protecting his near post, on the wrong foot. Steffen is able to get a hand on the ball but is ultimately unable to stop the game winner from hitting the back of the net.

Former ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Star Kate Walsh Reunites With a ‘Private Practice’ Co-Star — What Is the Cast up to in 2020? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

Before there was Station 19, there was another Greys Anatomy spinoff: Private Practice. The series followed Kate Walshs Addison Montgomery as she left Seattle for sunny Los Angeles, joining the practice of a a close friend. Its been over seven years since the series came to an end. Heres a look at what the cast is busy with in 2020.

Before Greys and Private Practice, Walsh was a relatively unknown actress. In the years since, she landed two more notable roles, in the short-lived sitcom Bad Judge and the teen drama 13 Reasons Why. Walsh recurred in season 1 of The Umbrella Academy and is set to appear in the upcoming series Emily in Paris.

In March 2020, Walsh met up with her former co-star Amy Brenneman, who portrayed psychiatrist Turner for all six seasons. Unlike Walsh, Brenneman had a very established career before Private Practice. She was nominated for multiple Emmys for her roles on NYPD Blue and Judging Amy.

Though she has done a number of movies of the years, Brenneman is still best known for her TV work. She starred in the supernatural series The Leftovers from 2014-2017. She also has a lead role in the upcoming Hulu thriller series The Old Man.

Paul Adelstein (far right) portrayed pediatrician Cooper Freedman in Private Practice for all six seasons. Before the series, he was best known for his lead role in the drama Prison Break. Since the show ended, Adelstein has had prominent roles in Scandal and Girlfriends Guide to Divorce. He currently recurs on Chicago P.D.

KaDee Strickland portrayed Charlotte King, the chief of staff at a hospital close to the practice whose role changes throughout the series run. This is still considered her most notable role to date. In addition to scattered film roles, Strickland was a part of the main cast of Secrets and Lies Season 1 and the two-season Hulu drama Shut Eye.

Taye Diggs portrayed internal medicine specialist Sam Bennett for all six seasons of Private Practice. Diggs has a storied career, having gotten his start on Broadway. He has starred in a number of films such as How Stella Got Her Groove Back and Chicago. Diggs has also maintained a strong presence on TV over the years, in shows like Murder in the First, Empire, and All American.

Tim Daly portrayed alternative medicine physician Pete Wilder in the first five seasons of Private Practice. Prior to landing the role, he starred in short-lived series such as The Fugitive and The Nine. He also earned an Emmy nomination for his recurring role in The Sopranos. Daly starred in Madam Secretary throughout its own six-season run.

Caterina Scorsone joined the cast of Private Practice as neurosurgeon Amelia Shepherd in season 3, remaining on the show until its end. Prior to joining, she starred in Canadian series Power Play and Missing. After Private Practice ended, Scorsone came over to Greys Anatomy, where she remains a part of the main cast today.

Audra McDonald portrayed fertility specialist Naomi Bennett on Private Practice for the first four seasons. She turned as a guest in season 6. McDonald, like her on-screen ex-husband, comes from a musical theater background, and some may recognize her from her role as Grace in the 1999 film version of Annie. McDonald currently stars in the legal drama The Good Fight.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: A Calzona Reunion Is Now More Possible Than Ever BeforeWhat Is Callie (Sara Ramirez) up to Since Leaving? – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

One of the most talked-about couples inGreys Anatomy historyis Arizona Robbins (Jessica Capshaw) andCalliope Callie Torres(Sara Ramirez). Calzona, as fans call the pair, broke up in season 11, to viewers dismay. At the end of the season, Callie moves to New York with her girlfriend, Penny, and daughter Sofia.

Viewers would like to know if there is an underlying reason why Ramirez left the show. They also want to know if ABC will ever give us a Callie and Arizona episode where the two are shown back together. Lets take a look.

Ramirez ended her ten-year run on Greys Anatomy in May of 2016, after the season 12 finale. It was her choice to leave, and there were no hard feelings from any party.

Im deeply grateful to have spent the last 10 years with my family at Greys Anatomy and ABC,Ramirez wroteon social media, but for now, Im taking some welcome time off. Shondas been so incredible to work for, and we will definitely continue our conversations! I send my love to Ellen [Pompeo], the rest of the cast and crew, and I look forward to always being a part of the Shondaland family!

Dr. Callie Torres came into our lives dancing it out in her underwear almost a decade ago, and I could not be happier or more proud of her journey, commented creator and showrunner,Shonda Rhimes. Sara Ramirezs performance inspired me as well as millions of fans each week. We wish her the best on her well-deserved time off. I will miss Callie tremendously, but am excited for what the future holds for Sara. She will always have a home at Shondaland.

After her time on Greys Anatomy, Ramirez spent time off-screen working on a Human Rights Campaign to end LGBTQ youth homelessness. She also recorded a single with other broadway stars to benefit the LGBT Center of Central Florida.

In September of 2016, Ramirez hosted a TedTalk for PBS. She also produced her first feature film as a producer, titled Loserville. The film was primarily about lessons they do not teach in high school.

On Nov. 19, 2017, Ramirez premiered as Kat Sandoval on the CBS series, Madam Secretary. She played the role of chief of staff to the UN Ambassador during season four of the show. Her character then became a strategic advisor to Elizabeth Bess Adams McCord (Tea Leoni).

I know theres a lot going on in the world,Ramirez wrote on Twitter. So much. And for just a quick moment, I want to wish everyone at@MadamSecretarya fantastic final Season 6@CBS!It was an honor to bring Kat Sandoval into your universe!

She concluded her time on the show during the fifth season and will not go on to be apart of the sixth and final season of the series. Ramirez has not shared what she will be working on next.

Since Ramirez left Greys Anatomy over three years ago, fans continually beg her to come back. Now that her time with CBS is over, they might get their wish.

I hope you enjoy your time off-screen,wrote one fan on Instagram, but please come back to Greys Anatomy soon so that Callie & Arizona can get back together! They are my favorite TV couple! Their love was such an inspiration to many! It just cant be over!!

Arizona moved to New York when she left the show at the end of season 14. Fans are hopeful that the pair reunited after the move since that was where Callie was. Since there is no bad blood between Capshaw, Ramirez, or Rhimes, it is plausible that the pair could return.

The pairs on-screen wedding was one of the first same-sex unions in primetime. The Calzona storyline helped Greys Anatomy earn praise for its inclusive representation from many groups, including GLAAD.

We will know more about whether the pair will return to Greys Anatomy when the show comes back from winter break on Jan. 23, 2020.

Anatomy of a suddenly sick Obamacare insurer – CBS News

Headlines have been screaming for months about big insurers such as Aetna (AET), United Healthcare (UNH) and Humana (HUM) pulling out of the Obamacare marketplaces because they couldn't make the exchange business profitable. As a result, dozens of counties throughout the country have been left with only one or no insurance choice on their exchange.

Against that backdrop, two smaller insurers that focus primarily on the Medicaid market -- Molina Healthcare (MOH) and Centene (CNC) -- were frequently noted as companies that can successfully navigate the uncertain and complicated exchange business. Many states looked to them and small regional or local insurers to help fill the increasing gaps the big names were leaving behind.

So it came as a bit of shock when Molina announced on Aug. 2 it would exit the exchanges in Wisconsin and Utah, scale back its exchange business in Washington state and leave the door open to pull out of other exchanges in the near future.

What's more, in marketplaces where it will continue to operate, Molina has submitted an average 55 percent premium increase to state regulators, partly due to the uncertainty over the future of federal cost sharing payments.

The news came amid Molina's report of a steep second-quarter earnings loss of $4.10 a share, compared to a 58 cent per share gain during the same period a year earlier. It also followed the ouster in May of Chief Executive Mario Molina and Chief Financial Officer John Molina, brothers who are sons of company founder David Molina. In the earnings report, Molina also announced a major restructuring, which includes about 1,500 layoffs, approximately 7 percent of its workforce.

Until all this bad news broke, Molina was one of the prime examples of an insurer that could actually make the exchanges work. (Centene still does and is expanding its exchange business.) Major insurers like Aetna and United Health, accustomed to the more stable employer-sponsored health insurance market, racked up losses in the exchange business in part because they were surprised by the large number of high-cost patients who signed up.

Molina's business focuseson administering Medicaid health plans for low-income and disabled patients. As a result, the company has experience with managing narrow networks of lower-cost health care providers. "The idea is to arbitrage low-reimbursement providers into exchanges where the competition is paying a lot more," explained Robert Laszewski, president of consulting firm Health Policy and Strategy Associates. "There's an opportunity for profit there."

Molina found it could compete for the no-frills end of the exchange market and enjoy a robust volumne of patient sign-ups. According to Laszewski's estimates, Molina had a track record of enrolling as much as 70 percent of eligible participants in the various markets it participated in. A pool that big offers enough healthy individuals to help stabilize risk, he added.

What went wrong?

According to Joseph White, interim CEO of Molina, the company became overwhelmed with its ACA business, including unexpected increases in medical costs and claims. "We did not adjust for growth in the ACA marketplace," White told analysts in a conference call last week. He explained that the company focused resources on existing processes and technologies instead of a full redesign that would have helped it better deal with ACA growth.

"That was a mistake," said White. "The marketplace shares fundamentals of the Medicaid market, but it's also very different," he added.

In addition, speculated Laszewski, as Molina expanded into new markets and became a more dominant player in others, it may have strayed from its core base of low-income customers, adding costs and risks it couldn't deal with.

"Every company has to analyze every market to make sure they're making money in every market," said Dan Mendelson, chief executive of Avalere Health. Say a plan with bad risk drops out of the market, he added. "You may get saddled with that risk as you pick up those customers."

Molina's bad news leaves exchange consumers with even less choice and more uncertainty than they were already facing in light of failed GOP efforts to repeal and replace Obamacare and the Trump administration's threats to discontinue support for the system.

As commitment deadlines for insurers approach, state insurance commissioners are working hard to convince them to stay in the exchanges and keep at least a bare minimum of coverage. In addition, small, local, often nonprofit players such as L.A. Care Health Plan are trying to fill gaps where they can, while heeding the lessons from Molina's recent mess.

Will these efforts be enough? Consumers may have to wait until open enrollment begins on Nov. 1 to find out.

3 Solid Reasons Fans Believe That ‘Grey’s Anatomy’s Fall Finale Is Setting Up for an Epic ‘Station 19’ Crossover Season Premiere – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

With the fall finale of Greys Anatomy coming fast, fans want to know when they can see all of their favorite characters in the spinoff, Station 19. From the promo for ABCs long-running medical drama fall finale, we can tell that a crossover event is coming.

Station 19 is expected to return for season 3 sometime in January, right around the same time that we can expect Greys Anatomy to return from break. Lets take a look at the three reasons why we know these two premieres will coincide with one another.

The Greys Anatomy Instagram account posted a photo of Jackson (Jesse Williams) and Vic (Barrett Doss) on November 19, 2019, and fans cannot stop talking about it. Most viewers dislike the couple together, but they are even more concerned that Jackson might leave Greys Anatomy.

I like these two together OK, wrote one Instagram user, but what I dont want is to lose another series regular, and it feels like thats where were heading with Jackson. Come on writers, give Jackson a real storyline!

Jacksons turned into a player and lost his authenticity after April, added another fan.

With the falling out between Maggie (Kelly McCreary) and Jackson in the last episode of Greys Anatomy, were not quite sure whats left for him at Grey-Sloan Hospital. It looks like the writers might be moving him over exclusively to Station 19.

Fans have two theories about why Ben (Jason George) might be dashing towards the emergency room of the hospital. Lets take a look at what they are.

Its gonna be Bailey [Chandra Wilson], wrote an Instagram user.

I have a feeling too, agreed another fan, especially seeing Ben run in like that.

Maybe shell lose her baby, guessed another viewer.

I think it might be the firefighter that Jackson is dating [Vic], surmised another fan, and Maggie saying this cant be happening because she lost the firefighters boyfriend on the table as well. The viewer continued, and they made it seem as though Ben and that firefighter are close, and thats why hes running?

The comments kept rolling in after fans watched the promo. Viewers are afraid that Bailey is about to lose her baby. Other fans are distraught that Maggie is going to lose a firefighter that is close to Ben and Jackson in some way. One thing is for sure, Ben is back, and something is wrong. He has a troubled, scared look on his face.

In the fall finale promo, fans guess that Jo is holding a baby that was possibly left at Station 19.

Jo seems to be outside with a pretty big baby, wrote one fan, while Ben is running into the hospital (I could be wrong). Maybe it was a baby that was left at the station that they brought to the hospital when Ben got the call that something happened to either Bailey or Tuck?

Could this be the baby that fans are hoping that Jo and Alex (Justin Chambers) eventually adopt? Whatever the truth may be, it is clear that every story arc includes Station 19 for this Greys Anatomy fall finale. Stay tuned to ABC Thursday at 8 p.m. to find out if all of the storylines will coincide with a Station 19 premiere in January.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’: Fans Are Still Furious over the Death of This One CharacterThey Claim It Was Worse Than Losing McDreamy – Showbiz Cheat Sheet

There is a lot of heartache on ABCs Greys Anatomy. Fans were torn to pieces whenMerediths(Ellen Pompeo) husband, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), tragically died.

Viewers will also never forget the surprising death of Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigl) love interest, Denny Duquette (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). However, there is one death that fans argue is worse than both of those combined. Lets take a look at who it is and why fans are still upset over it.

While fans typically love the drama of the on-again-off-again couples, sometimes viewers want a sweet, down-to-earth couple who makes you feel good. Henry Burton (Scott Foley) andTeddy Altman(Kim Raver) were once this cute, normal couple.

Well, at least it was as normal as you can get for a Greys Anatomy duo. Henry first came to the hospital as a patient with Von-Hippel-Lindau syndrome without insurance, in need of surgery. Teddy tried to appeal to the hospital, but they offered only a temporary fix. Before he left that day, she suggested they get married so he could be on her insurance.

Henry agreed to the marriage and was able to get his surgery. The pair started as friends (who were married for insurance reasons) but slowly became more. Teddy often would go over to Henrys place after terrible dates and spend excessive time with him.

Fans knew she was falling for Henry before Teddy did. During every one of Henrys surgeries, Teddy became very worried, often acting like a wife. She eventually confessed her love to him, and they became a real married couple.

Of course, right when viewers began to get comfortable with this adorable relationship, Henrys health took a turn for the worst.Cristina Yang(Sandra Oh) operated on a tumor near his heart, but when they opened him up, Richard Webber (James Pickens, Jr.) and Yang found there was too much damage. Henry died on the operating table, and Teddy was devastated right along with the fans at home.

Viewers are convinced that Henry was the best thing to ever happen to Teddy. There are not many fans who like Teddy withOwen Hunt(Kevin McKidd). They continually reminisce about Teddys days with Henry.

Teddy and Henry were such a unique but sensible couple, wrote one Reddit user. I really wish he had stayed alive in the show and moved away somewhere with Teddy. I just never could see Teddy and Owen together, even though they were such good friends.

I always ugly cry when Henry dies, added another Henry fan. I loved this couple so much. They were sweet and normal. They just fit together so well.

Henry was so good for Teddy, reasoned one viewer. I wish they hadnt killed him off. It was also so refreshing to have a character who wasnt a surgeon as a love interest.

Viewers quickly turned a love post about this sweet relationship to a hate post towards the writers of Greys Anatomy.

God, I loved Teddy and Henry, added a Redditor. [They are] still my favorite doctor/patient love story. It was believable. They didnt rush into anything. They met and Teddy offered to marry him so that he could use her insurance. Then they became friends, and then slowly fell in love with each other.

His death hit me harder than Dennys, the Redditor continued. Kims acting was so on point back then, but it has just felt flat in these last two seasons. Teddys speech in season 15, about how Owen is the only one who has ever made her feel rage, is so insulting to Henrys memory.

I dont get it, pondered another fan about the writing comment. Krista was showrunner from season 14 on, and in season 14, the show remembers how much Teddy loved Henry and was furious with Owen.

But then in season 15, they try to chalk it up to her being scared, she continues. If they insist on making Towen a thing, then make it believable. Make us believe that Teddy fell out of love with Owen, and then back in love. Not make it seem like she never moved on.

Fans will continue to debate which death on Greys Anatomy was the most tragic. For now, lets agree on poor Henry. Find out who else is on the operating table when Greys Anatomy returns from winter break on Jan. 23, 2020.

The Anatomy of Finickiness: On Alexander Theroux’s Einstein’s Beets: An Examination of Food Phobias – lareviewofbooks

MAY 22, 2017

TO BEGIN WITH the obvious question: Does the world need a more or less 800-page book on food phobias? Beats me. But the answer is in any case moot because, despite his subtitle, Alexander Theroux has written something rather different, more interesting and grander than that.

A phobia is generally considered (Im quoting Merriam-Webster here) an exaggerated usually inexplicable and illogical fear of a particular object, class of objects, or situation, and certainly Theroux writes about those who suffer from (and lets face it, sometimes celebrate) this condition, though he also tries to explain the inexplicable. Moreover he demonstrates that the distinctions between phobia, dislike, simple preference, aversion, obsession, and mere squeamishness are inevitably blurred. Hes concerned with food fetishes, fixations, fashions, food snobbery, and inverted snobbery, with food as a marker of class, status, and self-definition. He presents a parade of faddists, would-be revolutionaries, nutritional autocrats, cranks, and a few well-meaning folk with dubious ideas.

Inevitably the book contains a good deal of what we might call food trivia, although Im sure the author would rightly insist that these matters are anything but trivial. This is a serious book. But that doesnt mean we cant have some fun along the way, starting with the title: it derives from the fact that Einstein famously hated beets, though its a limited fame as far as this reader was concerned. Einstein was not alone: Michelle and Barack Obama hate them too, as does the food writer and occasional novelist Gael Greene. In fact, the book demonstrates that youre extremely unlikely to be alone in your phobia, however singular it may seem: Alfred Hitchcock wouldnt eat eggs but neither would President Taft, nor will Whoopi Goldberg. Naomi Watts and Jennifer Anniston cant abide caviar. Colson Whitehead cant face ice cream having worked an ice cream stand where the perk of the job was all he could eat.

William Cobbett eschewed tea because it was a destroyer of health, an enfeebler of the frame, an engenderer of effeminacy and laziness, a debaucher of youth, and a maker of misery for old age. Mussolini didnt eat mashed potatoes because they gave him a headache. Idi Amin doesnt seem like hed have been a fussy eater, but he had his limits, I tried human flesh, and it is too salty for my taste. Of course the reader cant be sure if this flesh was raw or cooked: if the latter, then surely the saltiness was the fault of the cook. There is also some speculation about whether Amin was actually speaking the truth or just buffing up his image as terrifying despot.

Prince (the purple one) didnt like to eat much of anything, but he particularly disliked mushrooms, feta cheese, and onions, although when he let Heavy Table look is his fridge there were 18 jars of mustard in there, and he explained, I dont collect it, but LOL yeah theres a lot in there. Incidentally, Thomas Love Peacock, the 19th-century novelist and official of the East India Company, judged an inn by its mustard pot: if he didnt like the look of the mustard hed leave the place.

These unlikely connections across history and culture, surprising, entertaining, sometimes free associative but not exactly random, are what give Einsteins Beets its special flavor and appeal. Therouxs scholarship is wide ranging and digressive, drawing on a quirky, specialized knowledge of history, literature, the higher gossip, as well as pop culture. Theres even an unexpected compare and contrast between food attitudes in Star Wars versus Star Trek.

The book also contains much that is genuinely informative and educational. Who knew that T-bone steak became the vogue in South Africa after Archbishop Desmond Tutu pointed out that its shape resembled that of the continent? Who knew that celery, parsnips, figs, and parsley contain high levels of fucoumarins potent light-activated carcinogens? How many of us are familiar with the philosophical poem by John Heywood (14971580) Of Books and Cheese? Well, I am now: its a good read.

Actually, cheese does seem to have the particular power to cloud mens and womens minds. Which is why Mitt Romney, when on the road running for president in 2011, though he ate a lot of pizza, always took the cheese off. T. S. Eliot declared never commit yourself to a cheese without first examining it. And Courtney Love, who hates cheese, calls it sour milk LARD. Like thats a bad thing?

From time to time I was reminded of Robert Burtons The Anatomy of Melancholy, similar in its baggy, overstuffed, eccentric, encyclopedic qualities, with the author by no means restricted to his alleged subject. Therouxs book has something of the magnificent folly about it. He tells us Brief Lives, John Aubreys gorgeously chaotic collection of biographies, is one of his favorite books: no big surprise there.

The index of Einsteins Beets is in itself a thing of wonder (if not of absolute accuracy): Angelina Jolie is there next to James Joyce, Jennifer Lopez next to Lord Byron, Homer next to J. Edgar Hoover next to Bob Hope next to Gerard Manley Hopkins. (Full disclosure, I should say that I too appear there, lodged somewhere between Isaac Newton and Friedrich Nietzsche.)

However, all that free-wheeling research aside, there is a personal, autobiographical element to the book. Fittingly enough the author tells us about his own phobias and dislikes. A by-no-means-complete list includes peppermint, margarine, marshmallows, kidneys, fruit-flavored teas, haggis, Scotch eggs, pork pies, all white bread, sweetbreads, overcooked pastas, salty chips, dried coconut flakes that taste like candle wax, fat-free yoghurt, three bean salad, pretty much all casseroles, head cheese, Waldorf salad, menudo, white chocolate, whole-wheat pasta, egg salad in any form, deviled eggs, any canned or jellied ham, yellow waxed beans, smoked salmon and cream cheese pinwheels, tossed salads with apples, mince pies of any stripe, store-bought candied fruits, harsh anchovies, tuna or sardines packed in water or even for that matter cheap mushy tuna in oil. Heres an author who knows his subject.

Theroux emerges as quite a character, perhaps his own literary creation; irascible, opinionated, easily distracted, with a lot on his mind. He doesnt do political correctness, hardly a shock to readers of his earlier works, and that may be an objection for some, though it would be a very sour individual indeed who could keep an entirely straight face at some parts of his chapter titled Liberaces Sticky Buns, or How Gay is Your Food? which reaches an apotheosis in a description by Neil Patrick Harris of his visit to an Asian restaurant in Montreal where he ate acupunctured snapper. Theroux quotes Harris as saying, Its snapper that has been caught and then killed in a way that is very calm the fishermen insert needles so that the trauma of death is avoided and the cut is really tender. Id have thought this must be satire, but apparently not. The information comes from an interview in Bon Apptit, a magazine not much known for its zesty sense of irony and subversion.

Theroux meanwhile does a very nice line in casual, personal abuse. Bill Cosby is the moronic, face-pulling jester/rapist. Andrew Zimmern he of Bizarre Foods fame is [s]calp-bald, beaky and voracious, he has the head of a California Condor, except that the body is that of a manatee. Diana Vreeland whom he despises for her snobbery (she once said, I loathe native food) is [t]all, loud, brash opinionated, and as homely as an empty glass of buttermilk. Both Ogden Nash and Elaine Dundy are dismissed as poetasters. Mahatma Gandhi was a peevish foodie, P. J. ORourke a would-be humorist, Dick Cheney a sour ball and satanic creep. He isnt always politically incorrect.

Joan Didion the cadaverous novelist and a frail, querulous near-dwarf comes in for special treatment. The dislike here (and it does seem downright phobic) surely has more to do with her writing than her eating habits, though Theroux tak
es time to pour scorn on her personal cookbook a bunch of astonishingly unoriginal recipes. And he finds a surprising ally in Angela Carter Although I am a card-carrying and committed feminist, she writes, what I would like to see happen to Joan Didions female characters is that a particularly hairy and repulsive chapter of Hells Angels descend upon their therapy group with a special squeal of brakes and sweep these anorexic nutters behind them despite their squeaks of protest. Ouch, in all sorts of ways.

Being an equal-opportunity abuser, Theroux also directs some venom at his own brother, Dear Paul who is also compulsively and self-admiringly forever the steadfast, brave, and unwavering hero of his own books, both fiction and non-fiction. He also casts doubt on Pauls claims to have eaten owls, sparrows, and beaver, among other rarities.

As for his high seriousness, theres a polemical section about the Israeli governments policy to restrict the amount of food going into Gaza, and he quotes Dov Weisglass, senior advisor to (now-disgraced) Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, as saying they were putting the Palestinians on a diet but not to make them die of hunger. Theres also a pretty sharp analysis of Hillary Clintons political disingenuousness, in her refusal to express any food preference whatsoever, declaring that all food is good, presumably for fear of offending anyone. Trump is simply dismissed (the book was evidently written before the election), not least because Trumps a man who will eat a whole bucket of chicken with a knife and fork.

But above all the book is an attempt to understand the various meanings that attach to eating and food, not only, or at least not narrowly, in terms of phobias and aversions. It may be a clich to say that we are what we eat, but its true enough. And perhaps were even more defined but what we dont eat, or what we refuse to eat. Theroux writes: A negative chic attaches to refusing something outright. The act of spurning acquires a kind of power. It gives advantage, dominance.

Well yes, most of us carnivores have ceded power to the vegetarian at our table, havent we? And most of us, however omnivorous, have probably turned up our nose at moms cooking in order to assert our independence. Theroux has a chapter titled We Inhabit the Universe of Mom.

Not that its only about mom. In a different chapter, titled Hearst, Hebrews, and Hydrophones, he offers a convincing analysis of Kafkas The Hunger Artist. Kafka may or may not have been suffering from anorexia nervosa, but he was certainly suffering from a troubled relationship with his father. Theroux sees the repudiation of food in this short story as an example of self-cancellation. The Hunger Artist controls the one thing that he can, and later he adds, I have often thought that in extreme cases the food a person selects to dislike might very well be an objective correlative of his or her guilt, the projection of an inner demon. The hunger artist selects to dislike everything.

Elsewhere in the book Theroux writes, resistance, outward and inward, is nothing less than a whispering answer to our need [] The struggle is for freedom, although of course it may well end up as a kind of enslavement. The last line of the book asks: Why cant food have its own devils? But by then, Theroux has proved that it can, it does, and probably it must.

So to return to that opening question, does the world need an 800-page book on food phobias, as well as dislikes, simple preferences, aversions, obsessions, squeamishness, food fetishes, fixations, fashions, snobbery, and inverted snobbery? Simple answer: Damn right it does and with Theroux at the helm, you cant help wondering why it wasnt a thousand, two thousand pages long. Some of us will be eagerly awaiting an expanded edition.

The anatomy of a drug website: 5 pharma tactics to be wary of – HealthNewsReview.org

Imagine you have an amazing office visit with Dr. Wunderbarwho offers the following:

Clearly, Dr. Wunderbar is wonderful.

Problem is there is no Dr. Wunderbar.

But there are plenty of drug websites that offer all this and more using the slickest of graphics, videos, and eye-catching statistics andwithout having to deal with that crowded waiting room, stodgydoctor, and ho-hum degrees on the wall.

Direct-to-consumer marketing of prescription drugs was approved(New Zealand 1981, US 1997, and Brazil 2008 ) for the most part before the internet emerged as the most far-reachingmarketing tool of ourtime. After all, the internet isin our office, home, car, phone, andeven our wristwatch.

It has proven to be a target-rich venue for the pharmaceutical industry, and one they have capitalized on with techniques that are sometimes informative but can also be manipulative, misleading, and even potentially harmful.

Lets look at a few drug websites to see what sort of strategiesare commonly employed and how they can be hazardous to your health.

About a week ago I wrote a story about the only FDA-approved drug to treat a condition called pseudobulbar affect, or PBA. That drug is called Nuedexta and like so many new drugs that pharma companies are heavily invested in it has its own website: http://www.nuedexta.com.

The website is a virtual blueprint for the 5 marketing tools I see most commonly used to hook customers (pharma would likely counter they are 5 tools to educate). Here they are:

The primary goal of these websites is not hard to spot. Theyare clearly trying to expand the pool of people who are eligible tobe diagnosed with the condition their drug treats. The companies will counter that this is simply an attempt to identify the undiagnosed. But, it not only increases the demandfor their drug, but also runs the hugerisk of diagnosing people without the condition. For example, I took the Neudexta quiz and it looks like I may have pseudobulbar affect:

And here are the 7 questions, of which I answered occasionally to all 7 because thats my honest reply. Of note, had I answered rarely to all 7 questions Iwould have scored >13 and still been considered a possible candidate for PBA:

After convincing you that you may have a disease or that you need their medication for the condition youve already been diagnosed with its typical for drug websites to offer a helping hand in paying for their drug.

Ad for type 2 diabetes drug, Farixa (dapagliflozin)

Financial support tabs (or co-pay calculators) are on most drug websites and seem harmlessenough. ButAlan Cassels, a drug policy researcher at the University of Victoria and a regular contributor toour blog, says thats not necessarily the case:

Co-pay or coupon programs have the veneer of charity and corporate philanthropy but they are only giving deals on marginal newer drugs, when there areoften cheaper and more effective generic drugs available like metformin instead of Farixa. Also, once a patient enters one of these programs they become a data point. Youve now established a direct line between the drug company and the patient. Patients can become dependent on that company for their supply of drugs. And the company can turn around and use your data for further marketing, patient reminders, gifts, and other types of largesse.

Cassels goes on to point out that most of these drugs are usually third line treatment options. In other words, clearly not the safest, most affordable, or most effective drugs available.

If a drug isnt worth taking, says Cassels, then making it cheaper doesnt make it any more attractive or worthwhile.

Andas veteran health care journalist Trudy Lieberman wrote on this blog, what on the surface may look like a win-win with patients paying less and drug companies gaining a loyalcustomer actually shieldsus from knowing the true price of the drugs. While a select few patients may see savings, the high cost of the drug will be shifted to someone else.

I cant tell whether this Allergan website for Chronic Dry Eye disease or CDE is incredibly sexy, bizarre, or ingenious.

Its called Eyepowerment and uses a video (soundtrack is the song Bette Davis Eyes popularized by Kim Karnes in 1981) featuring famous women to inform us that: Before We Had Our Voice, We Had Our Eyes. After a parade of recognizable faces were told: Burning, itchy, dry eyes may send the wrong message. These are symptoms of Chronic Dry Eyes.

Were led to believe this is a medical disease when its actually a symptomassociated with some very serious illnesses. Andit affects a lot of people. How many?

Well, in 2014, Allergan said20 million people were affected by CDE. In 2015, it was 25 million people. This year it jumped to 33 million people. And one ophthalmologist (who in 2015 made over $33,000 consulting for Allergan and other companies) claims over 60 million people worldwide may suffer from CDE.

Drug companies have a business to run. So whats the matter with using these 5 common strategies to reach consumers? Lets answer that question with these questions:

These websites are high budget and very sophisticated. They can be visually stunning and when you combine that with the effective tactics mentioned above they have tremendous potential to influence both medical opinion and health behavior. All the more reason that we as consumers need to stay wary of both their intent and content.

Why? Because these sites can be hazardous to your health just ask your doctor.

The anatomy of trade deficits – The News International

In the first 10 months of the outgoing financial year (FY 2017), a $19.93 billion trade deficit was registered on account of exports worth $17.91 billion and imports that amount to $37.84 billion. Trade deficit during the same period of the preceding financial year was $14.61 billion, with exports worth $18.14 billion and imports amounting to $32.75 billion. As a result, during FY 2017 (July 2016 till April 2017), trade deficit has increased by 36.41 percent compared with the previous year.

Trade deficit, along with fiscal deficit, has been a perennial feature of Pakistans economy as in the case of most other net petroleum-importing developing countries. The reasons for this stem from both economic and cultural factors. These economies need to import a great deal of capital equipment and industrial raw materials to maintain or accelerate the growth momentum.

Culturally, the people living in such societies are strongly inclined towards imitating a lifestyle that is prevalent in rich countries even though they lack the corresponding productive capacity which encourages the import of luxury goods. On the other hand, owing to severe supply-side constraints, coupled with a relatively large population, exports cant keep pace with imports.

It may be useful to compare Pakistans foreign trade performance with that of two other countries in the region over last three years. In FY 2014, Pakistans trade deficit was $16.59 billion (exports amounting to $25.07 billion and imports worth $41.66 billion), which went up to $17.20 billion in FY 2015 (exports worth $24.08 billion exports and imports amounting to $41.28 billion). The deficit further increased to $18.48 billion in FY 2016. The exports worth $21.97 billion while imports stood at $40.45 billion.

India registered a trade deficit worth $141.82 billion in 2014, with export amounting to $317.54 billion and imports worth $459.36 billion. The deficit came down to $126.36 billion ($264.38 billion for exports and $390.74 billion for imports) in 2015 and fell further to $96.37 billion in 2016 (exports worth $260.32 billion and imports amounting to $356.70 billion). Likewise, in the case of Sri Lanka, trade deficit stood at $7.94 billion (exports amounting to $11.29 billion and imports worth $19.24 billion) in 2014. It went up to $8.52 billion (with exports worth $10.43 billion and imports at $18.96 billion) in 2015 and rose further to $8.95 billion (exports amounting to $10.54 billion and imports worth $19.50 billion) in 2016.

It is evident that all the three countries are running an adverse trade balance and its scale is understandably relative to the size of the economy the biggest for India and the smallest for Sri Lanka. Trade deficit has gone up for both Pakistan (11.4 percent) and Sri Lanka (12.7 percent) over last three years. But in the case of India, it has come down. Imports have come down for both Pakistan (marginally by 2.9 percent) and India (largely by 22.3 percent), with a small increase for Sri Lanka. Exports have come down for each of the three countries: 12.4 percent for Pakistan, 18 percent for India and 6.6 percent for Sri Lanka. These figures reflect a reduction in global trade from $18.9 trillion in 2014 to $15.86 trillion in 2016.

The increase in trade deficit during FY 2017 (between July 2016 and April 2017) over the corresponding period of the preceding year may be explained by looking at both imports and exports. Total imports have gone up from $32.75 billion to $37.84 billion by 15.5 percent. Category-wise, the largest increase occurred in the transport sector by 39.2 percent, followed by the petroleum group (15.5 percent), food items (18.9 percent), machinery and capital equipment (16.1 percent), textiles (7.7 percent), chemicals (4.3 percent) and metals (1.7 percent).

Likewise, the total exports have gone down slightly from $18.14 billion to $17.91 billion by 1.3 percent. Exports fell in almost all important categories: textiles (3.2 percent), food items (4.5 percent), other manufactures, such as leather, sports and surgical goods (5.8 percent), petroleum (7.6 percent) and engineering goods (17.3 percent). However, the export of chemical and pharmaceutical products went up by 4.3 percent.

It follows that the fundamental cause of the substantial growth of trade deficit is the increase in imports rather than the decrease in exports. At the same time, it is exceedingly difficult for the government to check the growth in imports for one reason or another. The import basket can be divided into three categories: essential items, such as food and petroleum products; capital equipment and raw materials necessary for economic growth; and luxury goods.

Restricting the import of the first two categories is not desirable for obvious reasons. The government can restrict the import of luxury goods by raising the customs duties. Like other developing countries, Pakistan has a considerable gap between its bound (WTO) and applied import tariffs. However, the problem is that the demand for the luxury goods comes either from the government itself or the politically powerful affluent class. As a result, restricting their imports is a difficult proposition in a political sense.

Increasing exports is the right way to narrow the trade deficit. Obstacles to export promotion are of three types: market access, the high cost of doing business and structural constraints. The focus of the government and the private sector has been on overcoming the first and second obstacles. Over the last decade, Pakistan has been on a spree to conclude preferential trading arrangements (PTAs). However, most of the PTAs have caused imports to grow at a faster pace than exports. This has driven up trade deficits with PTA partners.

Bringing down the cost of doing business includes seeking exemptions from internal and border taxes, duty drawbacks, reducing interest rates, providing electricity at subsidised rates and keeping wages from increasing. From time to time, the government declares zero-ratings for the key export-oriented sectors and thereby exempts them completely from the GST. Earlier this year, a hefty export package, in the form of duty and tax remissions, was announced by the prime minister.

Lowering the cost of doing business and securing preferential access in foreign markets is important. But without addressing the structural constraints, an appreciable increase in exports is not possible. Unfortunately, the latter has been short-shrifted by both the government and the businesses.

Pakistan has a narrow export base. It is essentially an exporter of either primary products such as rice and fruits or of semi-manufactured goods such as textiles, garments and leather products. Not only are exports deficient in value addition, but they are also sold to the low-end of the market. The export basket being agro-based is subject to the vagaries of weather. A bad cotton crop as was witnessed during the current year can impact export receipts. The export profile reflects the dismal state of industrial development.

Another major structural problem is low labour productivity, mostly because human resource development has traditionally been a neglected area in Pakistan. The corporate sector works under the misconception that low wages are the key to competitiveness. Instead, what really matters is high labour productivity.

The corporate culture is markedly deficient in entrepreneurship one of the principal drivers of economic growth and export promotion. Most of the businesses are family-owned. They believe in playing it safe and making quick profits. These businesses are averse to innovation and venturing into new areas and have little commitment to improving quality. There is a culture of quality, which must be embedded into all the key processes of an enterprise: procuring supplies, putting together the factors of production, manufacturing products, marketing and sales. Making improvement in quality must be a continuous process.

Not surprisingly, Pakistan d
eficient as it is in both entrepreneurship and culture of quality continues to be an exporter of a narrow mix of low quality, low priced products.
