The word flange may have been invented by John Lennon as he asked producer George Martin repeatedly to add some flange to certain tracksand George Martin would oblige by simply pressing his finger to the rolling tape creating the iconic effect. Mandatory Helmets for Skateboarders in Colorado

NANNY-STATE WATCH

Democrats now outlawing Cool

Skatboarders, Rollerbladers, Bikers, and even Scooterers, will all be required to wear helmets that pass state inspection if a bill under consideration in the Colorado legislature gets passed this month.

From ABC 7 News, Denver:

Colorado lawmakers are considering legislation to require helmet use for all kids younger than 18. Kids would be required to wear a helmet on bicycles, scooters, skateboards or any other non-motorized device with wheels... Violators would be given an educational card that explains the risk of not wearing a helmet and where to find a free or low-cost helmet.

The legislation is sponsored by two liberal Democrats, both from Fort Collins.

From BikeMonkey:

“I will pursue any legislation in order to protect children as best I can,” says Colorado state senator Bob Bacon of Fort Collins. To that end, Senator Bacon and Represenative John Kefalas (also of Ft Collins) are sponsoring legislation to mandate helmet use for children under age 18

Libertarians in the State are mounting an opposition. Colorado Libertarian Party Chairman Dave Williams was quoted:

"It's kind of humorous, in that you're going to have cops handing out little safety cards to kids... Whose responsibility is that? It's the parents’ responsibility, and the government is going to spend taxpayer money to do something here that isn't going to have any real benefit?" Williams said.

Governor-run health care may be the primary motivation. From the legislation:

Colorado has an interest in preventing and mitigating the severity of such injuries as the economic cost to an individual and to society of a single severe nonfatal brain injury can exceed $2 Million.

Setting the Record Straight: Belgian Coma Patient Cannot Communicate | 80beats

brain-3Late last year, a Belgian man in his mid-forties created a media stir when doctors announced that he had been misdiagnosed as being in a coma for 23 years. Rom Houben, the victim of a horrific car-crash in the eighties, was incorrectly diagnosed as being in a “persistently vegetative state.” But by using new diagnostic tests and brain scans that were unavailable in the eighties, scientists revealed that Houben was actually conscious.

Reports then breathlessly announced that Houben could also finally “communicate,” expressing his thoughts by having his hand supported by his therapist who reportedly helped him tap out his messages on a touch-screen computer. “I shall never forget the day when they discovered what was truly wrong with me,” Houben apparently tapped. “It was my second birth. I want to read, talk with my friends via the computer and enjoy my life now that people know I am not dead” [The Guardian].

But now one of Houben’s doctors, neuroscientist Steven Laureys, has declared the Belgian hasn’t been communicating after all.

When the story first broke, DISCOVER and other discerning publications noted that this type of communication, called “facilitated communication,” is very controversial, and has repeatedly failed under conditions of rigorous testing. [Psychology Today]. Skeptics argued that the facilitated communication therapist brought in by Houben’s family was really guiding the man’s hand and choosing which letters to press herself. Skeptics who read Houben’s messages were also amazed that someone who was in a minimally-conscious state for more than two decades was so lucid, articulate, and forgiving of the medical staff. Laureys wanted to study the case further to determine if Houben could indeed communicate.

He set forth by studying a group of minimally conscious patients, including Houben, and three facilitators. The patients were presented with words and objects while their facilitators were out of the room. When the therapists returned, the patients were asked to type out what they saw. Two out of the three facilitators, included Houbens’, failed–leading Laureys to conclude that the Belgian man wasn’t communicating in the first place.

Presenting his findings at a neuropsychiatry meeting in London, Laureys said: “To me, it’s enough to say this method (facilitated communication) doesn’t work” [MSNBC]. He added that the new findings don’t change the fact that Houben was misdiagnosed, but noted that Houben’s previous words could not rightly be attributed to him. Said Laureys: “The story of Rom is about the diagnosis of consciousness, not communication” [BBC].

The findings have vindicated skeptics. “It’s like using an Ouija board,” Arthur Caplan, a professor of bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania, said Friday. “It was too good to be true and we shouldn’t have believed it” [MSNBC]. Other experts have suggested that facilitated communication could be used on some paralyzed patients but not on patients like Houben, who have suffered severe brain injuries.

However, there may be other methods that Houben could use to communicate; several weeks ago, a fascinating study showed a way to communicate with some vegetative patients by reading their brain scans as they focused their thoughts on different activities or places.

NCBI ROFL: Binge drinking in Jewish and non-Jewish white college students. | Discoblog

manischewitz“BACKGROUND: In the United States, religious commitment, as measured by service attendance, has an inverse relationship with alcohol consumption, heavy use, and problem use. This association, however, has not been found consistently in Jewish Americans. The present study examined the relationship between religious variables and binge drinking in Jewish and non-Jewish white college students. In addition, the association among genetic, cultural, and religious variables and binge drinking was examined in the Jewish sample alone. …RESULTS: As hypothesized, more frequent religious service attendance related to lower rates of binge drinking in non-Jews but was not related to binge drinking in Jews. Within the Jewish sample, individuals who were religiously affiliated had approximately one third the risk of binge drinking as those who were secularly affiliated, but identification with Jewish culture was not related to binge drinking. In the total sample, individuals who possessed a variant alcohol dehydrogenase allele ADH2*2 were approximately half as likely to binge drink as those who did not possess this allele. CONCLUSIONS: These results are consistent with previous studies that find an inverse relationship between religious service attendance and heavy alcohol use in Christian but not Jewish college students. Findings within the Jewish sample support theories that suggest religious, not just cultural, Jewish affiliation relates to lower levels of alcohol behavior. More research is needed to identify additional factors, including other religious, cultural, genetic, and biological influences, that protect Jewish Americans from heavy drinking.”

Over 250 People Attend Next-Gen Suborbital Researchers Conference, 2011 Meeting Planned for Florida

The research and education community voted with its feet last week with over 250 people turning out at the first-ever Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference in Boulder, Colorado, to discuss applications of commercial suborbital vehicles being built by companies including Armadillo Aerospace, Blue Origin, Masten Space Systems, Virgin Galactic, and XCOR Aerospace.

The conference included sessions on astronomy, solar physics, and planetary science; life sciences; microgravity physics; technology payloads and deployable vehicles; education and public outreach; and atmospheric, ionospheric, and auroral science.

“The amount of interest in these new suborbital vehicles was immediately apparent at our Boulder conference. The excitement in the air was contagious,” said John Gedmark, Executive Director of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation.

Dr. S. Alan Stern, chair of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation’s Suborbital Applications Researchers Group (SARG) and former NASA associate administrator for science, added, “In response to the turn-out at the conference last week, Space Florida and the University of Central Florida have teamed together with us to host a second, larger Next-Generation Suborbital Researchers Conference meeting February 28 to March 1, 2011, in Orlando, Florida. I’m looking forward to that already.”

Last week’s conference included an announcement by NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver of $75 million in planned funding over five years for NASA’s Commercial Reusable Suborbital Research (CRuSR) program.

The CRuSR program was highlighted in NASA’s detailed FY2011 budget proposal released today, which states: “As commercial suborbital capabilities become available, the CRuSR program will competitively secure flight services for experiment payloads supporting NASA’s objectives in science, technology and education.” NASA’s budget also stated that “CRuSR establishes a series of suborbital flights that will yield many benefits to NASA by providing access to 3-4 minutes of microgravity for experimentation, discovery and testing. Results are expected to reduce the risk for use of new technologies in future missions by demonstrating application in the space environment, providing for routine recovery of payloads and frequent flights.”

Piecing Together the Temperature Puzzle

Piecing Together the Temperature Puzzle illustrates how NASA satellites enable us to study possible causes of climate changeNASA has released a new video and image gallery that illustrate how NASA satellites enable scientists to observe climate change today and make predictions for the future.

The video, “Piecing Together the Temperature Puzzle,” explores possible causes for rising global temperatures. It explains what role fluctuations in the solar cycle, changes in snow and cloud cover, and rising levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases play in contributing to global warming.

The new gallery consists of ten spectacular satellite images of our warming planet captured during the hottest decade since modern record keeping began. The images show the kinds of events -- including melting glaciers, heat waves, and floods -- that many scientists predict will become more frequent in coming decades due to climate change.

This image, one of 10 in the gallery, shows a false-color image of Spain during a July 2004 heatwaveBoth the video and the image gallery are part of a new multimedia collection available with the launch of the “Our Warming World” Web page on NASA’s Global Climate Change Web site. “Our Warming World” features videos, images, articles and interactive visuals that discuss rising global temperatures and the impact of greenhouse gases as the main contributor to today’s climate change.

New NASA Web Page Sheds Light on Science of a Warming World

Will 2010 be the warmest year on record? How do the recent U.S. "Snowmageddon" winter storms and record low temperatures in Europe fit into the bigger picture of long-term global warming? NASA has launched a new web page to help people better understand the causes and effects of Earth's changing climate.

The new "A Warming World" page hosts a series of new articles, videos, data visualizations, space-based imagery and interactive visuals that provide unique NASA perspectives on this topic of global importance.

The page includes feature articles that explore the recent Arctic winter weather that has gripped the United States, Europe and Asia, and how El Nino and other longer-term ocean-atmosphere phenomena may affect global temperatures this year and in the future. A new video, "Piecing Together the Temperature Puzzle," illustrates how NASA satellites monitor climate change and help scientists better understand how our complex planet works.

The new web page is available on NASA's Global Climate Change Web site at:
