On the University of Minnesotas Northrop Mall, a small corgi runs around. She curiously sniffs as she rummages through the bushes, pulling on her leash as students walk past and garnering smiles from various passersby who are too shy to say hi.

Before COVID-19 shut down campus, seeing Butter the chemistry corgi was a regular occurrence for students. Butters owner, Bach Nguyen, a graduate student studying computational chemistry, would regularly bring her to work at Kolthoff Hall and walk her around campus multiple times a day.

In the age of COVID, Nguyen mostly works from home but still shares Butters life by walking around campus several times a week, sending her on walks with third-year chemistry student Liz Schulz and posting on Butters Instagram account.

Butter, described by Nguyen as, hyper, very hyper, has become famous on campus. Shes recognized by students who became accustomed to her regular walks, who follow her Instagram, or who, like Schulz, showed up at Nguyens office just to meet her.

Schulz said she had Nguyen as a teachers assistant last semester and soon began showing up at his office every day to meet with Butter. Eventually Nguyen started sending her out on daily walks with Butter.

Because Nguyen is rarely in his office these days, Schulz, who thinks of herself as Butters cool aunt, stops by his home and continues to take Butter out for walks once a week.

If Im having a down day or am stressed out about school, she helps me get out of my head, Schulz said.

While Schulz and Nguyen agree that Butter would make a terrible therapy dog, her existence helps them and others destress.

Therapy dogs are trained to be calm and nice, but shes more playful, Nguyen said. He thinks that sets her apart from therapy animals; people find her comforting because shes more energetic.

Nguyen said Butter is handling the pandemic well, because she gets enough walks to sustain her energy levels. But shes ready to go back to her old routine. Sze Cheng, Ngyuens wife and a biochemistry graduate student, said that Butters an extrovert and misses meeting new people.

Nguyen and Cheng adopted Butter in October of 2019 and began bringing her on campus to help socialize her shortly afterwards. Cheng said it was important to socialize her early in her life.

Nguyen also didnt want to leave his baby corgi behind while he was at work.

When he first started bringing her in, there were no rules on whether he was allowed to have a dog at work. Soon after, because of Butter, his department created animal guidelines, and he was able to get Butter registered with the University.

The chemistry department has wholeheartedly welcomed Butter. Shes made friends like Schulz and Mollie Dunlap, an assistant to the chemistry department head, who even bought her a custom University of Minnesota dog jacket with Butter stitched into it.

When asked if Nguyen was surprised at peoples reaction to her on campus, he laughed and said, Its a baby corgi! Id be slightly concerned if everybody didnt respond.

WVU Tech chemistry program and WVU School of Medicine benefit from nearly $1.4 million dollar gift – WVNS-TV

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) Students of Medicine at WVUs main campus, and the chemistry department at WVU Tech will benefit from nearly $1.4 million dollars between to the two programs.

The large sum comes from an estate gift made by Mary Lou Hudnall in honor of her late husband, Dr. Leonard P. Hudnall, who graduated from both programs. A native of Wheeling, WV, Mary Lou passed away on Sept. 27, 2019 at the age of 92.

Mary Lou was a very generous and giving lady, her friend Linda Stuckey said. WVU was left in her will because of her husband. She was very fond of WVU and WVU Tech. She was just an all-around sweet and caring lady.

The generous gift provides discretionary funding to support academic enrichment within the WVU School of Medicine. It will also address the highest needs in the WVU Tech chemistry program.

Hudnalls gift was made through theWest Virginia University Foundation, the nonprofit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.

Ten chemistry innovations that Iupac says could change the world – Chemistry World

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (Iupac) has released a new list of 10 emerging chemistry technologiesthat could have a huge impact on how we live. Its no surprise that this years list focuses on the Covid-19 pandemic, but, while there are plenty of potentially important emerging chemistry technologies in healthcare, topics such as energy efficiency, pollution and climate change also make the cut.

1. Dual-ion batteries

While lithium-ion batteries won the chemistry Nobel prize in 2019, a new dawn is breaking for dual-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries made the miniaturisation of energy-storage devices possible, powering laptops, smartphones and electric vehicles. However, they have their downsides. Lithium and cobalt are relatively scarce and are associated with unsustainable mining. Dual-ion batteries could replace them.

Dual-ion batteries are batteries in which anions and cations participate in energy storage. Dual-ion batteries are greener than lithium-ion batteries as their electrodes can be produced from cheap and abundant materials. Researchers are trying to create cheap dual-ion batteries using non-toxic organic solvents, such as water and enhance sustainability. Chemists have also found new ways to produce these batteries using sodium, potassium or aluminium, resources that are far more abundant than lithium.

2. Aggregation-induced emission

Certain molecules release energy in the form of light when they aggregate with other molecules. This is called aggregation-induced emission, and its a phenomenon found in luminogens such as polyaromatic compounds and oligosaccharides. Researchers think aggregation-induced emission could find uses in new luminescent materials for OLED devices, sensors and novel bio-imaging tools.

3. Microbiome and bioactive compounds

Bacteria in the gut can make a wide range of molecules in response to different stimuli.Recent computational analysis of the genome of the microbiome has discovered a number of interesting molecules, including powerful antibacterial compounds.This finding serves to show how much theres still to learn about the microbiome and how these discoveries could harnessed in medical research.

4. Liquid gating technology

Membranes controlled by liquid gates may sound absurd on the face of it, but this technology has already been demonstrated.Liquid gated membranes can respond to pressure changes, opening and closing pores on-demand without the need for electrical control. Liquid gates can be used to selectively process mixtures of fluids without clogging, so researchers foresee this technology being used in separation and filtration processes, for example, in water purification.

5. High-pressure inorganic chemistry

In the field of high-pressure chemistry, researchers apply intense pressures to a chemical and analyse its response. Under ultra-high pressure, the rules of chemical bonding alter and effects such as luminescence could be enhanced.

This field could lead to the discovery of novel properties in everyday chemicals, leading to the discovery of materials that are superconductors at room temperature, for example.

6. Macromonomers for better plastic recycling

Getting rid of ocean plastics is a task chemists are embracing from numerous angles. One of them is to redesign plastics, to craft more sustainable materials. Solutions include building plastics that break down under UV light or incorporating heteroatoms and functional groups in polymer structures, resulting in polymers that are easier to hydrolyse and recycle.

7. Artificial intelligence applied to chemistry

As in many other fields, artificial intelligence will improve the way in which chemists work. Researchers are developing algorithms to speed-up the understanding of chemical structures, enhance retrosynthetic analyses, design optimised reaction sequences and discover new drugs. Reactions could also become easier to reproduce and scale-up, while becoming greener and more efficient.

8. Nanosensors

A sensor detects changes in its surrounding environment. Chemical nanosensors detect a wide array of substances and, today, this field has progressed to the point where single molecules can be detected.

This technology could find applications in many areas and change the way we make decisions about the world around us. For example, in healthcare, detecting a specific protein could be a sign of disease. Nanosensors could also be used to search for specific molecules in food to determine whether a product is safe to eat or not.

9. Rapid diagnostics for testing

Its thanks to chemistry that there are different types of tests that can detect many different chemicals. Yet, these dont need to be just for detecting diseases pregnancy tests are rapid diagnostic tests which detect a hormone.

Rapid tests for the detection of Sars-CoV-2 is an area of intense research currently. Some rapid tests detect RNA strands, while others look for antigens. However, the World Health Organization is not currently advising healthcare services to implement this type of testing globally as its effectiveness is still questionable. Developing rapid tests that can detect Covid and other diseases in a timely and effective manner is an ongoing challenge for chemists.

10. RNA Vaccines

The search is currently on for a vaccine that could end the global pandemic. Pharmaceutical companies, such as Pfizer, are working on a unique type of vaccines to fight Covid-19: RNA vaccines. The vaccine that was recently reported as 90% effective at preventing Covid-19 is RNA-based.

RNA vaccines are based on a synthetic mRNA for a viral protein making them quick to design and easy to scale-up. When an RNA vaccine is administered the mRNA is turned into viral proteins. The immune system response to these proteins can then confer immunity on the vaccine recipient.

However, no RNA vaccine has been approved in humans to date, but they are undoubtedly a promising path to fighting Sars-CoV-2.

This latest list of chemistry innovations follows on from Iupacs one last year, released to mark its centenary. According to the organisation, these lists promote the fundamental role of chemistry in protecting society and the planet.

Two female scientists jointly win Nobel Prize in Chemistry The Ticker – The Ticker

In the 119-year history of the Nobel Prize, only five women have won in the chemistry category. Now, two female scientists on Oct. 7 made history by being the first women to jointly win the Nobel Prize in chemistry.

Washington D.C. native Dr. Jennifer A. Doudna and Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier from France were awarded for their 2012 work with the gene-editing tool CRISPR-Cas9. Not only were they the first female scientists to receive the award together, but they also won without a male collaborator.

Their first paper, A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity, was published in 2012. Their research showed that CRISPR could be used to cut DNA in an artificial environment, such as a test tube or petri dish.

Now, eight years later, their written idea has come to life in the form of CRISPR-Cas9 and the technology has become more widespread.

CRISPR, which stands for clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, was a major breakthrough for genome editing. The tool allows bacteria to use parts of DNA from invading viruses, which are in turn used to create DNA segments called CRISPR arrays.

These DNA segments, allow the bacteria to remember the viruses or any closely related ones, according to The US Library of Medicine.

If the viruses attack again, the bacteria produce RNA segments from the CRISPR arrays to target the viruses' DNA. The bacteria then use Cas9 or a similar enzyme to cut the DNA apart, which disables the virus.

Now, the technology is being employed in finding cures for genetic diseases. In fact, so far results show that CRISPR is working. In summer 2020, Victoria Gray became the first patient with sickle cell disease to undergo CRISPR editing, according to National Public Radio. They also reported that even post the gene editing procedure, Gray is thriving.

Additionally, Doudna and a team of researchers have developed a test using CRISPR that can be used to detect COVID-19 in only five minutes. This test could be useful for countries with a high number of coronavirus cases who do not have enough resources to test the entire population.

Also known as genetic scissors, the CRISPR gene-editing tool has been used for agricultural means as well. Plant researchers use the tool to change crops DNA, making them pest and drought resistant, according to Scientific American. If successful, this would in turn lead to an increase in crop production and food worldwide.

This tool, however, has also caused controversy. The science community and the world were shocked when scientist He Jiankui announced he had used CRISPR on human embryos to produce two twin girls.

Though he claims to have done so to disable the gene for HIV, there is no way to know how his actions will impact the rest of the girls genes. Chinese authorities have barred him from practicing medicine however, the damage could already be done to the girls DNA along with the perception of gene and stem cell science as a whole.

Regardless of the controversy surrounding the use of CRISPR, scientists are praising Doudna and Charpentier for the achievements their research has brought so far.

The ability to cut DNA where you want has revolutionized the life sciences. The genetic scissors were discovered 8 years ago, but have already benefited humankind greatly, said Pernilla Wittung Stafshede, a chemical biologist at the Chalmers University of Technology.

Doudna and Charpentier have not only given the world a means of rewriting DNA, but also have rewritten history by breaking the male streak of Nobel Prize in chemistry recipients.

In the wake of Southern Maine chemical burns, ecomaine issues advisory – PenBayPilot.com

The recent treatment of two waste collection workers for chemical burns due to the improper disposal of hydrochloric acid offer an opportunity for renewed focus on the need for safety in waste management, said a news release from ecomaine and theSolid Waste Association of North America, Northern New England Chapter.

The Mid-Coast Solid Waste Corp., which is the municipally-owned transfer station of Camden, Hope, Lincolnville and Rockport, contracts with ecomaine to transport and process solid waste in Portland.

Two collection workers for Casella Waste Systems,were hospitalized on October 26 for chemical burns in Dayton,after a container filled with hydrochloric acid burst and caused a fume cloud, the release said.

Specifically, waste collection employee ranks as the fifth most hazardous occupation in the United States, behind fishing and timber cutting, with about 44 deaths per 100,000 workers, according to the U.S. Department of Labors Bureau of Labor Statistics. Furthermore, collection workers are more than twice as likely to be injured on the job than other employees.

Waste collection and disposal is among the most dangerous jobs in the United States and Canada, said David Biderman, CEO and Executive Director of SWANA. It is critical that residents and industry professionals work together to make safety the number one priority to avoid incidents like this.

Kevin Roche, SWANAs Northern New England Chapter Chair, added: This incident is a truly unfortunate reminder that, as we often say, there is no such thing as away. By making better, greener alternatives to petrochemistry, Zymergen sees a huge economic and environmental opportunity

Smoke from wildfires previewed the apocalyptic future some warn of if we cant control climate ... [+] change. Biomanufacturing upstart Zymergen aims to use biology to make the $3 trillion chemicals and materials industry more sustainable.

As the smoke from a dozen wildfires darkened San Francisco, Josh Hoffman took his two children outside to see the surreal morning sky. It looked like a dystopian scene from Blade Runner 2049.

My kids were scared because the sun never rose, and when it did it looked like a dying planet, says the CEO of Zymergen, a biomanufacturing company. In the apocalyptic skies, Hoffman saw the end of times that so many warn about if we dont get a handle on climate change. Its not going to be solved with gentle nudges to use a little bit less power. We need real technology-based innovation.

Warmer, drier conditions, increased drought, and a longer fire season...these are just a few potential results of climate change. But by making better, greener alternatives for the $3 trillion petrochemistry-based chemicals and materials industry, Zymergen sees a huge economic and environmental opportunity.

Investors see the opportunity, too. In September, Zymergen announced one of the largest deep tech investments of 2020 $300 million to accelerate its pipeline of high-performance chemicals and materials. The investment includes initial Series D funding led by Baillie Gifford, Baron Capital Group, Perceptive Advisors, and a number of current investors. Zymergen expects to raise additional capital in Q4 as part of the Series D round.

Hoffman says about 60% of Zymergens cash is going to new pipeline and platform developments, and another 20% is going to sales and marketing for existing products such as Hyaline, a bioelectronic film that will probably end up in your next smartphone, laptop, watch, or television. Hoffman says to expect two more product announcements in the next 18 months.

Were doing what you'd expect for a company at our stage, he says.

To appreciate Zymergens rapid progress and the potential for synthetic biology companies to sustainably transform the $3 trillion chemical and materials industry, you only have to go back 10-15 years to see where the field began.

In the early 2000s, many of the brightest minds in synthetic biology (Jay Keasling, George Church, and Chris Somerville, to name a few) started companies and institutes to apply their new biotechnology toolkit to the biggest, most important problem they could think of: reducing carbon emissions by replacing gasoline with biofuels. Upstarts like Solazyme, Amyris AMRS , and Gevo GEVO went head-to-head with Big Oil by trying to make biofuels that were cost-competitive with dirty fossil fuels pumped out of the ground.

A 42-gallon barrel of crude oil can create a number of petroleum products, including gasoline, ... [+] distillate, jet fuel and many other products.

In retrospect, this was about the hardest problem they could choose. Besides just overcoming the technological challenges of using biology to make a commodity chemical, these early innovators were also up against an industry with trillions in infrastructure, decades of experience, and deeply entrenched interests. Synthetic biology continues to fight the good fight in companies such as Joule, Sapphire Energy, Synthetic Genomics, Qteros, and many others. But in todays world of cheap oil, where the United States spends ten times more on fossil fuel subsidies than education, biofuels remain economically challenging.

This led the synthetic biology industry to seek different ways to compete with a barrel of oil. It turned its attention to the smaller non-fuel part of the barrel that yields products like perfumes, skis, running shoes, toothpaste, and even medicines. These so-called high-value compounds represent much of the value of petroleum. This is where Zymergen sees the opportunity.

I think you're going to see a huge drop in demand for oil, Hoffman says. First, he believes companies like Zymergen will succeed in using biology to make better high-value products than you can get from oil. He also believes there will be a drop in the demand for fuel as Tesla TSLA and other electric cars become mainstream and affordable. And here Hoffman is quick to point out that tech companies like Tesla are winning on performance, not sustainability.

Its not that Tesla is a great electric car. Its just a great car, he says.

In the chemical industry, Hoffman says that people have been cracking hydrocarbons and putting the resulting building blocks together to make chemicals and materials for 150 years. He says product innovation in the industry has slowed to almost nothing, and heres why: If you crack a hydrocarbon, you will get around 15 intermediates, maybe a couple of hundred base monomers, and a limited number of polymers. But biology gives you many more building blocks with untapped properties. Zymergen thinks of petrochemistry like a black & white silent film, and biology like multichannel, live streaming, interactive entertainment.

Hoffman sees giants like Dupont and BASF as two of Zymergens future competitors (Zymergens Hyaline film is already competing with Dupont). He says biomanufacturing has better economics than petrochemistry.

We don't have to build a $200 million plant to bring a product to market, he says, instead using reusable bio-based fermentation that makes capital expenditures much lower.

Also, he says biomanufacturing processes are safer. Every time a hurricane hits the Gulf, you hear about chemical plants blowing up or spills sickening people and animals. When you make stuff with biology, its a winery, not a refinery. In biomanufacturing, you might spill some corn sludge on the ground, but people don't die.

John Warner joined Zymergen as a Distinguished Research Fellow in July.

n a move that signals and validates Zymergens sustainability aims, the company announced in July that world-renowned green chemistry leader John Warner joined Zymergen as a Distinguished Research Fellow to lead outreach, ideation, and commercial explorations around sustainability and green chemistry. As much as anyone, Warner embodies the Zymergen ethos to partner with biology.

Biology outperforms humans hands down, not only in the things it makes but also how it makes things,

Warner says. He says that making many of humankinds best products requires heating to high temperatures, putting under high pressure, and/or using harsh chemicals. Biology does most everything at room temperature and pressure, with water as the solvent, he says.

Warner says when you do chemistry in a multi-ton reactor, there is no expectation that its going to be compatible with the environment. But if you start your reaction in a living organism as with the engineered fermentation approach of Zymergen and other synthetic biology companies he says, Thats an interesting starting point.

As far as transforming the $3 trillion chemical and materials industry, Warner says that never in history did a new technology have an easy time replacing the old technology.

The status quo has a way of holding on to itself, Warner says, and replacing petrochemical processes with bio-based processes is the most difficult of the twelve pillars laid out in his groundbreaking 1998 book, 12 Principles for Green Chemistry. But, he continues, successful companies recognize the status quo, find a way of innovating, and they succeed in the future because of that balance of defeating the inherency of the status quo to move forward.

To hear Josh Hoffman talk about it, Zymergen doesnt simply want to move forward. It wants to take the tiger by the tail.

Randolph Field Hockey Returns Largely Intact; Hopes To Capitalize on Team Chemistry – TAPinto.net

RANDOLPH, NJ- While 2019 was a struggle in the win / loss column for the Randolph Field Hockey team, it wasa building block for the abundance of youth they sent out onto the field. Having lost only three seniors to graduation from that 3-14-2 season, the girls will return most of their team intact for 2020; one year older, stronger, and more experienced.

Being very young and inexperienced last year really hurt us, said coach Gina Adickes. I am hoping with having a lot of returners and promising newcomers we will be very competitive in our pod, as well as prepared for our post season.

Three key returners were named captain for this season in four year varsity starter Sidney Lusardi ( Senior ), three year varsity starter Sarah Bona ( Junior ) and second year starter Jordan Saybe ( Junior ).

Sidney is our most experienced player having been on varsity all four years, said Adickes. She has seen us make it to the state finals, so I expect her to want to get there again and win in her final year.

Lusardi herself echoes Adickes sentiments and understands the responsibility she has to teach the younger players.

Being a four-year varsity player, Ive had the opportunity to see how the team and program have changed over the years with the people entering and leaving it, said Lusardi. Ive met some truly amazing leaders who have had a great influence on me. I take my knowledge of the game Ive learned and share it with others to create an environment that encourages growth - and challenging yourself to do better and have fun.

Coach Adickes also used some flattering words to describe Bona, a player who she also expects strong leadership from this season.

Sarah is our most gifted player, I can put her anywhere, and she will get the job done, said Adickes. She is our tough cookie. She tells you how it is and that can be scary for some kids, but she knows what it takes to win a section championship so the girls should feed off that.

Bona also commented on the chemistry and the bonds that the team feels they have entering the season.

Since we have so many returning players from last year, our team chemistry has improved greatly, said Bona. We are a very close team on and off the field, and I feel that this will help us with our results this season. I am excited to see how we play moving forward.

While Lusardi and Bona will spend most of their time helping to power the offense, the Lady Rams third captain ( Saybe ) will be protecting the house and anchoring the defense.

Jordan is our most steady player, and she will be directing our back field, said Adickes. She has improved so much this year that her skills motivate the team. She is more of the silent captain but has so much power in her nonverbal's.

As the last line of defense, the Rams will see Amanda Klopper in net, who returns from last year as well. About Klopper, Adickes stated, I expect her to be more consistent on the field and more vocal, and since this is year two on varsity, I have high hopes for her.

Adickes further went on to describe her team, stating, Joelle Yurchuk and Riley Novack are two freshman that hold a lot of promise for this coming season. Two sophomore additions on the forward line are Anna stock and Sydney Jenish.

Team chemistry and having so many returners were identified by Adickes as the key strengths of her squad. As for weakness, she says there are still some big holes on the field that she hopes those players who are stepping into those roles will improve each game.

We were a very young team last year and with some of our key players looking even better this season we should have a very competitive year, said Adickes. Other key returners, some of whom are playing in new positions, are Bridget Byrnes, Olivia Pentz, Stephanie Goldberg, Gianna Drake and Katie Lachanski.

The Lady Rams coaches have preached hard work, effort and focus to make sure the team is prepared, especially since this will be a shortened season due to Covid-19. It paid dividends in the teams first game, an 8-0 victory over Morris Hills.

Throughout preseason, coach has been stressing the idea of continuous effort and no garbage reps, said Bona. What she means by that, is we should go through every drill, play, and activity with 100% effort to help build skills and chemistry working as a team.

Lusardi has confidence that this will be a season to remember.

Seeing how much everyone has improved, I expect us to go really far this season, said Lusardi. Every player knows the basics, and we have really great team chemistry, which is the foundation to the great team I know we are, and I believe our record is going to show this year.

Bona led the team in the season opening win with 3 goals and 2 assists. Pentz and Dickson added two goals, while Drake and Stock tallied a goal each.

Clippers failed to find identity, develop chemistry in series against Nuggets – Binghamton University Pipe Dream

Gap between Lakers and Clippers widens as James proves greater value than Leonard

Prior to facing off against the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals, the Los Angeles Clippers held the record for the longest conference finals drought in the NBA at 49 years. After almost half a century, the Clippers had a chance to break this drought. This was going to be the year they were going to dispose of that unwanted record. Well, that number is no longer. Thats because it now sits at 50 years half a century.

With a 3-1 lead over the Nuggets, a conference finals matchup between both Los Angeles teams seemed inevitable, but unfortunately, that all fell apart when the Clippers lost three consecutive games to the Nuggets.

This wasnt the first time Doc Rivers and the Clippers had blown a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference semifinals. In 2015, the Lob City Clippers held a 3-1 lead over the Houston Rockets. The Clippers had a 19-point lead deep into the third, but ultimately lost after getting outscored in the fourth quarter 40-15, mainly by the likes of Josh Smith and Corey Brewer.

This season was supposed to be different. They had just signed the reigning finals MVP Kawhi Leonard and had traded for 2019 MVP candidate Paul George. Prior to these acquisitions, last years team had won 48 games and took the reigning champs, the Golden State Warriors, to six games. They successfully retained the talents of Lou Williams, Patrick Beverley and Montrezl Harrell, players who were acquired when the Clippers traded away Chris Paul in 2017. Even with four players averaging nearly 20 or more points in the regular season, this team still couldnt get the job done.

So what exactly went wrong? Is there anyone in particular to blame for the Clippers shortcomings?

First and foremost, credit must be given where credit is due. We must tip our hat to Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. This marked the second consecutive series where the Nuggets came back from being down 3-1. However, dont be fooled. The Nuggets did not win this series. The Clippers lost the series to themselves.

Leonard was never on the same level as LeBron James. One may argue that since Leonard was the Finals MVP last season, he is better than James. However, that would be the equivalent of saying, Since James averaged one less point this season than the prior season, James has regressed as a basketball player.

The impact James has on a basketball team is astronomical compared to the impact Leonard has on a team. When Leonard left the Raptors, the Raptors still boasted the second-best record in the East and were a couple of possessions away from advancing to the Eastern Conference Finals. When James left the Cavaliers in 2018, the Cavaliers tied for the second-worst record in the league, only ahead of the New York Knicks.

The other argument that is often made is that Leonard beat the Warriors team last season that was going for a three-peat. However, people seem to forget that Kevin Durant did not play in the series. Additionally, when Klay Thompson got injured, the Warriors were leading in Game 6. Overall, Leonard is not held to the same level of scrutiny that James is. Unless James is on your team, it will take a lot more than one man to make a deep run in the playoffs.

Leonard had a bad game. Everyone else had a bad series. Williams, who averaged 20 points at one point in the regular season, averaged just 10 points on 36 percent for the series. Harrell, who averaged 19 points in the regular season, averaged only 12 points in the series. Many of us knew that James and Anthony Davis were the better duo than Leonard and George. The X-factor for the Clippers was their depth.

But most importantly, The Clippers never found their identity. This might be attributed to chemistry issues. There were reports by Fox Sports Chris Broussard that players resented the special treatment head coach Doc Rivers gave to George despite his inconsistent play. This was never an issue for Leonard, as he, for the most part, delivered. According to The Athletics Shams Charania, multiple teammates had verbal spats with George throughout the postseason, citing in their exchanges a lack of accountability from him.

Accountability is one of the most underrated ingredients for a championship-caliber team. It is historically proven that accountability starts with the leaders of a team, either from a coach or the best player. Its no secret that Leonard is not a vocal leader. In LA, that person was supposed to be Rivers. Safe to say, that never worked out.

The Lakers are the biggest brand team in the NBA. The Clippers are considered to be the second team in town. James is the biggest brand name in sports. Leonard is one of the most humble players in sports. James and Davis were both former No. 1 draft picks. Leonard and George were drafted 15th and 10th overall, respectively. James and Davis chased the bright lights of California. Leonard and George were raised in Southern California. Rajon Rondo and Dwight Howard were big names off the bench of the Lakers. Williams and Harrell were trying to make a name for themselves, being former 45th and 32nd overall draft picks, respectively. The Lakers are a historical franchise. The Clippers are the underdog franchise. Herein was an opportunity for the underdogs. Leonard and George were supposed to be the hometown heroes. Yet, this underdog identity never fully materialized.

The Clippers were full of dogs, but they never got to bite. Better yet, they didnt even get to sniff the Lakers.

UNH Looking Into Claims That Chemistry Professor Ran Offensive Twitter Account – New Hampshire Public Radio

Students at the University of New Hampshire are protesting and school officials are investigatingallegations that a chemistry department professor is behind an anonymous Twitter account that posted offensive messages and railed against diversity and inclusion efforts while masquerading as an immigrant woman of color.

UNH confirmed Wednesday it was aware of the allegations and is investigating a member of its faculty.

We are deeply troubled by what weve learned so far and immediately launched an investigation, a university spokesperson said via email.

NHPR is not naming the professor at this time, as it has not independently confirmed that he operated the Twitter account. The professor did not respond to a request for comment, and the school declined to confirm his identity.

The professor is accused of operating the Twitter account with the name "the Science Femme, Woman in STEM." That account, as well as the professors personal account, were both deleted this week after an internet post alleged he was behind both online personas.

The anonymous account was created in January 2019, and attracted more than 13,000 followers. In July, the person behind the account posted a message that they were an immigrant woman of color who grew up in poverty, sleeping on a dirt floor. The professor alleged to be operating the account, according to his online biography, is a white male from the Northeast.

The tweets from the account included a range of material: comparing the Black Lives Matter movement to terrorism, openly misogynist and transphobic messages, and even an expletive-laden message about a soccer team in Sacramento. It also laid out suggestions for how faculty members could undermine diversity and inclusion efforts championed by students in the wake of the killing of George Floyd by Minneopolis police officers.

On June 30, the account tweeted: I was successful in killing my dept's woke statement on recent social unrest. This took several weeks and may have permanently burned some bridges, but I think it's important. It is a toxic ideologiy that cannot be given an inch." The tweet attracted nearly 15,000 likes.

Other users claim the professor used the account to harass and intimidate other scientists on Twitter.

According to screenshots shared with NHPR, the account also posted nude photos of a former California congresswoman leaked without her permission.

Late Tuesday evening, Glen Miller, chair of UNHs chemistry department, emailed faculty members, naming the professor and writing that he admitted to operating the account.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, of course, but when those opinions are dismissive or hurtful or harmful to others, it is not okay with me, Miller wrote in the email, which NHPR obtained.

Miller added the professor is embarrassed and overwhelmed and shell shocked. He fears that this could be the end of his academic career.

Some students and faculty gathered Thursday outside UNH's Parsons Hall, where science classes are offered, to demand the professor be fired, arguing his statements go beyond expressions of free speech and instead cross into hate speech.

I think all the things weve seen on that account of his make him in no way able to teach at a public university like UNH, said Taylir Bullick, a PhD student in the chemistry department during Thursdays campus protest. Theres no way he can do that safely, and in an equitable way. Hes just gotta go.

Erinn Reville, a fourth-year graduate student in the department, said the protest was meant to show the university and larger scientific community that we dont stand with the racist, the homophobic, the transphobic, the Islamaphobic, the sexist comments that were said on that Twitter account.

Along with operating a lab on campus, the professor also teaches a number of classes, according to his online biography. Jackson Kaspari, a graduate student, said hes gotten to know the professor in recent years, and was in disbelief by the allegations.

This wasnt a small thing by any means, said Kaspari. Clearly he was getting satisfaction in spreading these hateful messages and harassing people."

Kaspari added, Frankly, Im ticked off about the whole thing. And I just think its disgraceful.

DeAndre Hopkins natural chemistry with Kyler Murray has led to 22 receptions – Yahoo Sports

Saints receiver Michael Thomas set the NFL record last season with 149 catches. He made 20 of those in the first two weeks.

Cardinals receiver DeAndre Hopkins has 22 catches already this season. His previous best through the first two games was 14 receptions, which he accomplished three times with the Texans.

Yes, its early, but it has Hopkins on pace for 176 catches. His career high is the 115 receptions he made in 2018 with Houston.

I really dont look at stats too much, but just the way my body feels and the game plan going into it, this is the best Ive felt on a Week Three, Hopkins said, via Bob McManaman of the Arizona Republic

Hopkins has made All-Pro each of the past three seasons, averaging 105 receptions for 1,372 yards and 10 touchdowns. He arrived in Arizona in a trade from Houston already regarded as one of the top-two receivers in football.

He looks even better paired with Kyler Murray.

I envision greatness, just like he does, Murray said. I feel like he can have a great year. The first however many years were together, I feel like as long as we put the work in, it should be hard to stop.

Hopkins has never led the league in receptions or receiving yards. He currently ranks first in receptions and fifth in receiving yards.

Baker Mayfield talked last week about his connection with Odell Beckham has to come naturally. The Browns teammates havent found that yet. But Murray and Hopkins have hit it off from the start.

We just kind of hit it off through natural vibes, Murray said. Hes a real good dude. And then from there, youve got that quarterback-receiver connection, and its something I cant really explain unless you played the game and been a part of it.

I think we kind of just naturally have that connection already.

Who has the most success preparing Black students for careers in science? Historically Black Colleges and Universities – Chemical & Engineering…

Isaiah Speight had taken three chemistry courses in high school. So when he got to his first college chemistry class he didnt think he needed to take it seriously. I got slammed in my first exam, he remembers.

His professor at Norfolk State University quickly called Speight into her office for a talk. She knew that I could do better, and she wanted to give me a push, he remembers. She knew that I could take a step forward.

That was just the kind of push that Speight needed. And that kind of one-on-one, intense intervention is common practice at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), says Speight, who is now a chemistry graduate student at Vanderbilt University. People know who you are and what youre capable of at a very early stage.

For decades, HBCUs have been a bright spot in the training of Black scientists including chemists. Despite their small numbersthere are just 101 HBCUs out of thousands of US colleges and universitiesHBCUs send a larger percentage of their Black students on to get graduate degrees than other schools. Many of the top Black chemists who go on to successful careers in industry and academia are HBCU graduates.

How do HBCUs do it? A supportive atmosphere; a diverse, encouraging faculty; and deliberately preparing students for PhDs.

Despite their successes, HBCUs face intense challenges, including funding problems that have led to overworked faculty and a lack of administrative support and equipment. Those challenges could be mitigated with more supports for HBCUs overall and for scientists in particular.

Its remarkable how much these institutions are doing, given the stressors and constraints that they face, says Kent McGuire, program director of education at the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, who cochaired a 2019 National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine study on minority-serving institutions.

If faculty at HBCUs are given supports similar to those available at predominantly white institutions, McGuire says, youll see the return on investment is pretty significant.

History of HBCUs

Colleges for Black scholars were first founded in the 1800s to train former slaves and free Black people who were prevented by law from going to white schools. After the US Civil War, Jim Crow laws and other forms of systemic racism continued to stop Black people from attending white schools through the 1960s, so the number of HBCUs expanded.

Willie May, a chemist and former director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), says HBCUs were the only viable option for him growing up in the 1960s in segregated Alabama. He went to Knoxville College, and remembers it as the first place he ever had interactions with white people where we werent calling each other names.

It was just the perfect, nurturing environment for me to grow up in, May says. I think HBCUs still fulfill a similar role for many young African Americans.

HBCUs encompass both private and public schools, primarily in the US South and East. Some have doctoral or masters degree programs, but most are small, undergraduate-focused schools.

Historically, HBCUs have been the pathway to jobs as doctors, lawyers, teachers, and other professionals for many Black Americans. Many Black families have a long history of attending HBCUs and encourage their own children to follow in their footsteps.

HBCUs have been especially important in training Black scientists. One US National Science Foundation report showed that from 200211, 24% of all Black PhDs in science and engineering earned their bachelors degree from an HBCU. Ten of the top 11 undergraduate institutions for Black PhD scientists and engineers were HBCUs, led by Howard University and Spelman College.

1837: Year first HBCU established, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania

That has been especially true for chemistry. More recently, 29% of Black students who were awarded chemistry bachelors degrees in 2018 came from HBCUs, even though just 9% of Black students nationwide attend the schools. The numbers are even higher at the doctoral level.

Starting in the mid-1980s, more Black students had the option to go to primarily white universities instead of HBCUs, says Willie Pearson, a sociologist at Georgia Institute of Technology who has studied the origins of Black chemists.

Many HBCUs continued to attract large numbers of Black students, but they were often first-generation college students or those from difficult financial circumstances. Despite those challenges, HBCUs continued to graduate Black students at larger rates overall and produce large percentages of Black scientists in particular, Pearson says.

HBCUs have a special mission. And we have to teach whoever comes to the door, says Angela Peters, a chemist who is now provost at Albany State University.

Students might come from difficult backgrounds or be the first in their family to go to college, she says, but HBCUs will provide whatever supports are needed to help them recognize their potential.

HBCUs have not only a sense of community, but its the pride and tradition because of how HBCUs were formed, Peters says. That history is integral to helping students succeed. At an HBCU you can feel how you are a part of a community of scholars.

Studies have shown that Black students come into college with the same level of interest in science as other students, but at white schools they tend to fall out of the sciences at higher rates. That isnt true at HBCUs.

When he retired from NIST in 2017, May was trying to decide what to do with his time. He recognized the access to immense resources he had working at NIST, but he was also reminded that when his mother visited she would ask if other Black scientists worked there. It would make my mother proud if I went back and tried to contribute at an HBCU, he decided.

May is now a vice president for research and economic development at Morgan State University. Morgan State and other HBCUs have a huge gap in the amount of resources they have compared to other research universities. But those challenges are worth the effort, May says. I see so many kids that remind me of myself.

Sense of belonging

Leyte L. Winfield went to Dillard University as an undergraduate, and she remembers the whole school as steeped in the history of the African American experience.

That history, plus the artistic and cultural nature of New Orleans, really influences your creativity as well as your scientific thinking, Winfield says. As a chemist, I dont have to be all analytical, all technical. I can be creative. I can push boundaries and think beyond just the molecules.

ssor at Spelman, says students at HBCUs get exposed to culture and history of the Black experience not only formally in classes and lectures, but also just by being surrounded by Black students and professors. It helps them recognize their own capabilities and possibilities as Black scientists.

Were training the whole student, and we give them a cultural experience that connects with how they identify, Winfield says.

In her North Carolina high school, Breyinn Loftin was often one of the few Black students in honors classes, and she remembers being shy and quiet.

When she started at Hampton University, I remember feeling very comfortable because it was a small setting. And most people in the classroom looked like me, the professor most of the time looked like me, she says. It was easy to ask questions.

Loftin says she gained confidence in that setting that has carried over into her work toward a chemistry PhD at the University of Houston, where there are just a few Black students.

It took me a while to adjust and just realize Im here for a reason, Loftin says. Im just as qualified as my counterparts.

Hampton chemistry professor and assistant dean Michelle Claville, who is currently working at the National Science Foundation, says being one of few Black students adds an extra burden for those at predominantly white schools that students at HBCUs dont have.

As difficult as it is for a white student science major, it is going to be heavier for me, she explains. I walk into a room and the expectation is, she doesnt do it like we do. She is not as smart as we are. She doesnt deserve to be here.

HBCUs have developed a family atmosphere, says Natalie Arnett, a chemical engineering professor at Florida A&M University (FAMU) who worked for 11 years at Fisk University.

That means Arnett could take her daughter to school with her and everyone knew her. That also means being honest with students when they are falling behind, she says.

Sometimes I had to be that mama voice of You messing up, Arnett remembers. My students used to call them come-to-Jesus meetings.

Other times that meant pushing her students toward the future she could see for them, even before they realized something like a PhD was an option. What I found was successful for me was really trying to mentor my students in the direction that I want them to go, Arnett says.

At HBCUs, the faculty, staff, and even the surrounding community all come forward to show students they can succeed. That support drives you to stay in that particular place and really try to build something, Arnett says. You know that if you do, its going to ultimately help these students who are going to do great things and bring it back into the community.

Faculty focused on success

Briana Simms remembers perfectly when her biochemistry professor at Xavier University explained the connection between disulfide bonds, curly hair, and relaxers.

I just was shook, she says. Wow, this white mans really telling me the chemistry behind my perm. I love it.

Simms immediately changed her major from chemistry to biochemistry in hopes of learning more. And that was just one of the many times she felt the intense support from the faculty, no matter their race. Those professors made such an impact on me, she says. It was just like a different level of care.

Faculty at HBCUs tend to be racially diverse and include immigrants. Overall, they have many more Black faculty than predominantly white schools, almost 50% on average, according to the National Academies report.

At Howard, chemistry professor John Harkless says seeing Black scientists who have succeeded helps when students hit hard moments that make them question their path. I dont actively show up in class with a big banner saying, Hey, Im Black, he says.

But the students see Black faculty, as well as Black chemists in history, as an example. Ive been doing this and therefore, theres no reason associated with you being Black that says you cant, he says. That becomes part of that personal mythology that you tell yourself when P-chem is doing awful things to your feelings or when a synthesis refuses to work.

You might use the term Herculean effort to describe the commitment of so many of these faculty to their students.

Donyiel Hoy, now a biomedical engineering graduate student at the University of Connecticut, went through many of those bad moments after he was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea when he was a chemistry student at Morehouse College.

He felt more comfortable talking to his Black professors about his problems, Hoy says, in part because he didnt have to worry about how he was perceived. I never had to really watch the way I spoke, he says, or feel afraid to share the problems he was having in class or out.

I had a lot of professors who were willing to make waves for me and help me in as many ways as possible, Hoy says.

No matter their background, HBCU faculty buy into the idea of supporting and encouraging Black students, McGuire says. You might use the term Herculean effort to describe the commitment of so many of these faculty to their students.

Part of it is institutional history and pride. But part of it is an understanding that theyre going to make a demonstrable difference in these kids lives, McGuire says. Many faculty think of it as the Lords work.

Claville didnt go to an HBCU herself, but when she became a faculty member at Hampton, she quickly saw how they gave students a safe space to learn while also preparing them to work in a predominantly white world. If we believe our students can do it, then we will adopt any persona that we need to adopt so that a student ends up believing and accomplishing as well, she says. HBCUs teach students to never question their intellectual capability and be willing to exude resilience in the face of difference and opposition.

Fundamentally, what is our mission? Our mission is to take the disenfranchised and make them believe.

Preparing for PhDs

Sonya Good, a chemistry professor at Texas Southern University, says that many students at her school arent ready for college and run from chemistry.

They think that all they should be doing is just going to class and making good grades and thats about it, Good says.

Students dont realize they should be doing more, such as undergraduate research. So even though the school has scant resources, Good says, faculty do their best to bring students into their labs during the year and support them in finding summer research experiences at predominantly white schools.

That deliberate guidance through the process of deciding to go to graduate school and choosing where to go is an important support HBCUs provide. Carl Bonner, a chemistry professor at Norfolk State, says that the most impactful thing HBCU professors show is the fact that we care about them, that we will go the extra mile to help them be prepared for what they will encounter, Bonner says. We give them an expanded idea of whats possible.

Were training the whole student, and we give them a cultural experience that connects with how they identify.

That is in part through pushing research experiences. If we can get a student to travel more than 100 miles twice to make presentations, theyre going to graduate school, Bonner says.

Winfield says the rigorous science curriculum at HBCUs is another key to student success. If you dont have the rigor of that curriculum, you dont have those authentic learning experiences through research, youre not goin
g to be able to get them to where they need to be, she says. At the same time, if you dont have that system that believes in the student, that sees where they can be and models where they can go, youre not done.

HBCUs challenges

HBCUs have had clear success supporting Black students on their way to science PhDs. But their faculty also face intense challenges that many people outside of HBCUs dont understand. Take Arnett as an example.

When she was at Fisk University, Arnett was chair of her department but did not get release time from teaching. She taught 16 credits a semester. She coordinated the chemistry part of a masters-to-PhD bridge program with Vanderbilt. And she ran a research lab with 23 graduate students and several undergrads.

When somebody else looks at your CV, they say, Oh, well, you dont really have that many publications, she notes. So by the end of the day, after Ive done my administrative duties, dealt with my students, had a meeting or two or three, and then had to come home to my family, there was no time for me to write a paper.

Teaching four or five classes a semester is common at HBCUs. Because they were born out of discrimination and racism, many are underfunded and underresourced compared with other universities. That underfunding has implications for faculty there who want to apply for grants.

Major research universities almost always have a large support structure built around helping their faculty identify and apply for grants. But most HBCUs have few of those supports. So faculty are on their own to identify grants, write and edit their proposals and budgets, and ensure they are meeting the extensive federal grant requirements. They also dont have huge public affairs offices letting people know what the faculty are doing in the lab or the classroom.

Morehouse College chemistry professor Juana Mendenhall says HBCU faculty have to work extra hard to show the quality of their science. Despite their lack of supports, faculty have to be able to disseminate our research on that world pedestal of chemistry and make sure that its still stellar.

Mendenhall thinks HBCU faculty are not always on an even playing field, though. Sometimes peer reviewers dont understand the challenges HBCU faculty face or have a preconceived notion of the research faculty there can do.

I wonder sometimes if it was a blind review if things will be written differently, she says, given some of the comments she gets on grant proposals. But Mendenhall says she has developed a thick skin. We just keep kicking.

Last year, Arnett moved from Fisk to Florida A&M, where she is part of a joint engineering program with Florida State University. Because of that connection, she only has to teach one class a semester.

I felt like I was like Frulein Maria in the hills just spinning around. I didnt know what to do with myself, she says.

So far, shes already written three or four papers that had been lingering for years, plus applied for two or three grants and written a letter of intent for another.

Crystal Dangerfield had met few of her first professional teammates in person. Instead, the meet and greets were taking place over Zoom thanks to the coronavirus.

That sets itself up for a less-than-ideal start to a WNBA career for a rookie point guard. But there was nothing awkward about it. Somehow, with a group of fresh faces who were hundreds to thousands of miles apart, the Lynx were gelling.

People were laughing, cracking jokes on each other, and just energy that way, Dangerfield said.

Napheesa Collier felt it, too. The chemistry was obvious to her, through the computer screen.

I really got along with everyone, I enjoyed talking with everyone on there, Collier said. So I knew from the beginning it was going to be really fun being around this group.

If you can bond over Zoom, you can probably do it in person, Dangerfield surmised. That proved true almost immediately. Players were in the Twin Cities the week prior to heading to the WNBA bubble in Florida. And while they werent able to work out together then, Collier noted they were hanging around one anothers workouts, chatting and hanging out around the facility.

I really liked who these people were as people, Collier said. So its always fun to have that chemistry going onto the court, and I guess it was kind of surprising that it translated so easily onto the court.

You never know if it will. Plenty of teams feature players that like one another, yet arent very good. Friends may not play well together. But as training camp commenced, evidence mounted that this group was going to work together.

Things are going to go wrong in training camps, particularly when players havent been able to play competitive basketball for months prior to camp. Lynx training camp was no different. Bad passes were made. Shots were missed.

What impressed Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve was the response to those situations.

I didnt have to coach them and say, Hey, when someone doesnt make a play, its not just one person. I didnt have to coach any of that, and body language, all of that was very natural to this group, Reeve said. They were good to each other. If somebody made a mistake, it was like, Lets pick you up and lets move on to the next one. You got this, all that good stuff. I would say it was those interactions.

Thats exactly what played out in games. The Lynx fell behind in games, it lost one important player after another, from Karima Christmas-Kelly for the season, to Sylvia Fowles for most of the season, to not having Odyssey Sims at the start of the campaign, to being without players such as Rachel Banham, Shenise Johnson and Lexie Brown intermittently. And it never mattered.

The Lynx continued to win, with new players stepping up and seizing opportunities at every step.

You saw it when we were down in games, when Im losing my mind about all thats happening wrong. They dont hear me, Reeve said. They find a way to just keep playing the next play. I think something that many, many people have commented on is that this group just keeps playing and theyve got a relentless way about them, and I do believe its because of how they feel about each other.

It all added up to the Lynx, considered a fringe playoff team at the start of the season, finishing 14-8 in the regular season to earn the No. 4 seed in the playoffs and a first-round bye in playoffs that began on Tuesday. Bridget Carleton thinks Minnesotas resilience and cohesiveness was a direct result of the teams chemistry.

We care about each other, we want each other to be successful, so we celebrate every little thing we can, Carleton said. We want to fight for each other, we want to do every little thing we can to help the person next to us. I think thats why weve been so resilient throughout the year, and that has helped us get to this point.

The Lynx held their annual end-of-regular-season get-together Monday night to celebrate the end of the regular campaign and look forward to whats to come.

It was so fun, Collier said.

Of course it was. Thats been the case for everything this team has done together this season.

I think every time this group gets together they just really enjoy one another, Reeve said. They believe in each other, and theyre excited about the opportunity for the 2020 playoffs.

Chemical Industry Outlook: Recovery From The COVID-19 Global Recession – PRNewswire

WASHINGTON, Dec. 9, 2020 /PRNewswire/ --U.S. chemical production is regaining momentum after coping with supply disruptions, falling demand and shrinking revenue linked to the global COVID-19 pandemic, according to the American Chemistry Council (ACC)'s Year-End 2020 Chemical Industry Situation and Outlook. With the recovery that began in Q3 firmly in place and improvement in many key chemistry-consuming industries, the outlook is positive.

At the start of 2020, U.S. chemistry faced headwinds including a global manufacturing slowdown, protectionist trade policies and uncertainty about the upcoming U.S. elections. As the business effects of the pandemic took hold, chemical production fell. Motor vehicle production plummeted along with supply chain output. Housing showed strong gains due to shifting patterns of remote work and record-low interest rates. Most other end-use segments declined, partially offset by demand for chemistries used to make items used in the response to the pandemic.

"American chemistry is playing a vital role in the global fight against COVID-19, providing inputs for personal protective equipment, disinfection and sanitation products, medical supplies and equipment, protective barriers, and plastic packaging, among others," said Kevin Swift, ACC chief economist and Outlook co-author. In March, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security identified the chemical sector and its workers as 'Essential Critical Infrastructure.'

During 2020, performance among chemical sectors was mixed. Plastic resins was the only segment to post positive growth, due to its role in COVID-related solutions. Other basic chemical segments declined, especially synthetic rubber a key ingredient in tire manufacturing. Specialty chemicals saw demand falter across nearly all functional and market segments. ACC expects a fairly significant rebound in 2021.

"The post-pandemic outlook is for broad-based growth in chemicals supported by solid fundamentals," said Martha Moore, senior director of policy analysis and economics at ACC and co-author of the Outlook. "Growing customer demand, stabilizing export markets, and a competitive edge linked to domestic supplies of shale gas and natural gas liquids (NGLs) are among the factors pointing to continued gains in U.S. chemistry."

Total chemical production volume excluding pharmaceuticals fell by 3.6 percent in 2020 and is expected to grow by 3.9 percent in 2021 and 2.7 percent in 2022. Basic chemicals production fell 1.3 percent in 2020 and is projected to grow by 5.0 percent in 2021 and 3.2 percent in 2022.

U.S. GDP tumbled 3.8 percent during 2020, down from a 2.3 percent gain in 2019. As the global economy recovers from the pandemic-induced recession, U.S. growth is expected to rebound 3.7 percent in 2021 and 3.2 percent in 2022, led by stronger consumer spending. Industrial production fell 6.9 percent in 2020, with declines occurring in nearly every sector. Industrial production is expected to rise 3.7 percent in 2021 and 3.5 percent in 2022. Growth is anticipated for nearly all industries, with the largest gains occurring in motor vehicles, aerospace, appliances, iron and steel, petroleum refining, and plastic and rubber products.

Automotive and building and construction are important end-use markets for chemistry. Production of light vehicles was very strong during 2015-19, averaging nearly 17 million units per year. Sales are expected to average only 14.4 million in 2020. A V-shaped recovery has begun, and sales are expected to rise to 16.0 million in 2021. The consensus outlook is for sales to improve further and remain at elevated levels over the next several years.

The consensus outlook for housing is for a gain to 1.34 million units this year as many households move to less densely populated areas, followed by modest progress through 2025. Household formations are supportive, as are job and income gains in the long-term. Low mortgagerates have provided some stimulus. Shortages of labor and available lots are constraining the pace of growth, however. Housing starts are set to edge higher to 1.38 million in 2021 and 1.36 million in 2022.

U.S. chemicals trade will be notably lower in 2020, and it will be a year or two before total trade flows return to pre-COVID levels. Total chemicals trade is projected to shrink 7 percent to $220.8 billion in 2020, then recover to $240 billion in 2021. Exports will fall 9 percent to $124.0 billion in 2020 before expanding to $134.5 billion in 2021. Imports will fall 5 percent to 96.8 billion in 2020, then recover to $105.5 billion in 2021. The chemicals trade outlook is linked to the shape of the manufacturing recovery, trade policy, and the course of COVID-19. Potential changes in global supply chains could affect international trade levels longer-term.

Troopers: Truck driver charged in Monday Thruway chemical spill at Rotterdam – The Daily Gazette

ROTTERDAM -- The tractor-trailer driver state police say caused a massive spill of iron oxide down a stretch of the Thruway early Monday has been charged..

Mohamed M. Sheriff, 29, of Philadelphia, was charged with one count of misdemeanor reckless endangerment, as well as multiple traffic infractions that include leaving the scene of a property damage accident, state police said.

Troopers say Sheriff's tractor trailer struck the Gordon Road overpass just after midnight Monday, ripping open his trailer and spilling a bag containing iron oxide onto the Thruway.

Sheriff was aware of the damage and spill, but continued on to his destination at Benjamin Moore in Amsterdam, state police said.

Troopers found Sheriff there later Monday morning as he unloadedhis cargo, state police said.

State police tracked down the truck by following markings from the spilled iron oxide to the Thruway exit at Amsterdam. They found the truck and Sheriff at about 5 a.m. The truck was identified as from the N&V Group of Philadelphia.

The chemical spill affected about a half-mile of the highway. Crews spent most of the morning cleaning it up.

Iron oxide is deemed hazardous due to the possibility of it being inhaled. If inhaled at high rates, it can cause irritation to the respiratory tract and eyes. It can be safely removed from a vehicle by washing it.

The westbound lanes betweenExits 25 and 26 were closed for the entire morning. It had reopened just after noon. A final closed lane reopened later in the day.

Most of the material was swept up by contractors in protective clothing. Crews used water to rinse the remainder off the road. The DEC monitored the cleanup.

All westbound traffic was diverted off the Thruway at Exit 25 torenter at Exit 26, state police said.

Sheriff was processed and released to appear in court later this month.

This Kashmiri Chemistry teacher gave JEE, NEET aspirants tutorial videos on pen drives during lockdown – EdexLive

When Kashmir was under complete lockdown due to the abrogation of Article 370, people lost their livelihood but thousands of students aspiring to write their JEE and NEET exams had lost hope. That's whenWassim Bhatthought he could help kids by recording the videos of different concepts that he would otherwise have taught in a physical classroom. Originally from Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, Wassim is not only young but a much-loved teacher among the kids in his village.

He says, "Kashmir was under lockdown even before the pandemic began and the world knows it very well. And so many careers were at stake. Hence, I decided to record videos of eight important chapters in Chemistry for JEE students and provide them on a pen drive. Since I have been working as a teacher and the students know me here, I contacted them personally and told that if they are interested in preparing for the exams, then they can come home and copy it on their laptops from my pen drive. The response from these students was positive. While some students did not have a laptop, they would watch these videos along with their friends and take notes."

Such is Wassim's dedication to helping kids with studies. Observing the response from students and taking their advice seriously, Wassim started a YouTube channel called Wassim Bhat where you will find around 37 videos that he has uploaded two or three months ago explaining the important concepts in Chemistry - each video has more than 6,000 views. He also has more than 4,19,000 subscribers.

But what led Wassim to become a teacher is an interesting story in itself. He was quite young when he lost his father and his family was bereft of income. While he went on to study Civil Engineering at SRM University in Chennai, there was pressure on him to look after his mother and siblings. That's when he started working as a model and took up a few assignments that paid him decent money. On the other hand. Wassim had good skills in teaching which his family knew very well. He recalls, "One day my mother called me and told me that my father always wanted me to become a professor as I was good at teaching. When my sister was in class 7, I would coach her in most of the subjects and my family liked the way I taught her. My mother's words made me change my decision and I started teaching Chemistry to my college friends and juniors when I was a third-year engineering student. Days passed by and one of my friends suggested that I must start teaching on a bigger online platform so that it can be of some help to the students."

Soon after completing his graduation Wassim joined BYJU'S and taught Chemistry to class 11 and 12 students. He says, "After working here for a year or so, I moved to Srinagar and worked at the Kashmir Institute of Excellence. When the lockdown was announced, I occupied myself with shooting videos for YouTube and then got an opportunity to work with Vedantu which is an interactive online tutoring platform. Now, it's been three months since I began working with them."

Curious to know more about the subject he teaches, we asked him if students really had an interest in learning Chemistry beyond their exams. He explains, "Whether students take an interest in the subject or not, it depends on the teacher. No student will understand if you don't teach them the basics. Hence, whether the student is a rank holder, an average or a below-average student, I start the concepts from the basics. That's when they get interested to know more. And when it comes to chemical reactions and formulae, there are tricks to remember them. Once the students are thorough, nothing can stop them from gaining good ranks."

Aside from teaching, Wassim has played a key rolein helping students deal with stress and boost their confidence to write the exams amidst this pandemic. "There are many students that I have met who are prepared and wantto write their exams this year. Because these students would have already taken a year's break in 2019. A break for another year would mean a lag in their careers. Therefore, whenever these students call me, I tell them not to lose touch with the books. If not for ten hours, they can invest three hours of a day to study so that they are prepared to face the exams," explains Wassim.

USMNT: Berhalter focused on chemistry with quick turnaround to WCQ – Yahoo Sports

2020 has presented a very unique and difficult set of challenges for everyone, and that includes the USMNT as Gregg Berhalter and Co., prepare for the start of 2022 World Cup qualifying in a few months time.

Speaking ahead of Mondays friendly against fellow CONCACAF nation Panama, Berhalter described some of the challenges he and his staff have faced to assemble a group of players that they feel can return the USMNT to the World Cup, as well as the difficulty to do so with only this months training camp to include the vast majority of first-team figures between now the start of qualifying.

Most notably, Berhalter indicated that further building chemistry and on-field relationship is his main priority to complete this camp. In previous situations of back-to-back friendlies, the distribution of minutes would be more freely spread out among the players called into camp, whereas this time around his focus is squarely on the USMNT players most likely to kick off qualifying at a still-to-be-determined time in 2021.

When I first took over, we were switching guys left and right. Now, as were getting toward [qualifying], were starting to feel the urgency. This group wont be in until March again, and then potentially Nations League [in June], and doubtfully for Gold Cup, so were basically going to have four more games together after this game. Thats a small number, so it is crucial that we get guys playing together and comfortable with each other.

Were going to try to build on what we had last game, so it will most likely look similar but with some slightly different personnel.

One thing Ive noticed, especially when youre working with young players or a group thats just forming, is you go through different stages of team development. With this group in particular, it is more of individuals looking for their position within the team. We clearly want to move to more of a team-oriented standpoint as we get into qualifying.

Its completely natural whats happening now a guy wants to come into camp, he wants to make a good impression on the coaching staff, he wants to play really well and focus more on himself. As he gets more comfortable, now hes focused more on his teammates. We certainly want to get to that stage by qualifying, because thats going to be really important.

One of the small number of changes that Berhalter revealed is that Reggie Cannon will be inserted into the USMNT starting lineup at right back. Sergio Dest, who started there against Wales, figures to shift to the other side of the field and play left back. While hes certainly competent on the left, Berhalter admits that Dest does face some opponent-specific challenges on his unnatural side.

With Sergio [on the left], sometimes you run into the issue against compact opponents that he has a tendency to come inside, which is completely natural to come onto his strong foot. If theres no space, it may be difficult.

On the right, hes used to arriving more something weve been working with him on, getting really deep into the penalty box that he can create dangerous plays. On the left, hes ball-secure, hes good combining if you have a winger that stays wide, it could be a really good combination.

As for the opponent, Panama, precious few players in the camp have participated in a World Cup qualifier against CONCACAF opposition, and thats an experience they will have to take in stride when the games take on a new meaning next year. Monday will serve as but a small glimpse into a brand new world.

I think [facing Panama] is a great opportunity for some of the guys that arent as familiar with CONCACAF opponents to get that experience, so were really happy with this game.
