Libertarian Magician Penn Jillette comes to the defense of the Tea Party movement

Self-described "libertarian" Penn Jillette defended the movement founded by the Libertarian Party, on CNN's Larry King Live.

King asked Jillette if he considered himself to be a Tea Partier:

I, there's a lot I disagree with them on, and I'm not really part of it, but I always think that a distrust of the government is the healthiest thing Americans can have. I think that the country was built, the most American thing you can have is a distrust of leaders. Don't follow leaders, watch your parking meters.

Then another guest on the show comedienne Rachell Harris, accused the Tea Party of being "more about racism."

Jillette responded:

Well, that's the magic word. Once you say "racism," the other side loses automatically. And I don't think we have very much evidence that that's what it is. Don't they have to be doing racist things besides you just saying that they're racist?

Continuing:

HARRIS: No, but they're looking at the number of people that are in, like, the majority of the people that are in the Tea Party-

JILLETTE: So the race that they are makes them racist by definition?

Jim DeMint may be preparing to challenge McConnell in the fall

South Carolina's rebel conservative eyeing Majority leader position?

The nomination for the GOP primary of staunch conservative Mike Lee over incumbent Bob Bennett in Utah over the weekend, raises the possibility of a race for Senate majority leader. The Washington Post (via Memeo) called the win a "Victory for the Tea Party."

South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint has been heavily rumored to be seeking a showdown with Mitch McConnell. Assuming the Republicans take the Senate, such a fight could be likely.

DeMint was backing Lee, while McConnell sided with Bennett.

From the Salt Lake Tribune:

"We need a senator who is committed to balanced budgets, constitutional limits and individual liberty. I believe that person is Mike Lee," DeMint said.

Additionally, weeks ago DeMint broke ranks and was one of the first prominent Republicans to back libertarian Republican Rand Paul in Kentucky's senate primary. McConnell recently endorsed Paul's opponent Trey Grayson.

Larry Dale Keeling, political reporter for the Lexington Herald wrote:

DeMint is backing Tea Party challengers to establishment Republican candidates in other states as well. Going head-to-head with your party's floor leader in his home state just removes any doubt that something's afoot.

Notably, Paul has been consistently ahead in the primary polls.

23andMe Now Diagnoses Fatal Tay-Sachs Disease

Exhibit: Patient: Andrew Yates “Tay-Sachs Disease | 23andMe Established Research Report” (negative/negative)

A deleterious mutation of the HEXA gene is by definition a diagnosis of Tay-Sachs disease (homozygous or compound heterozygous) or Tay-Sachs carrier (heterozygous).

Regarding 23andMe’s medical laboratory test commercially advertised by 23andMe to the public as “Tay-Sachs Disease | 23andMe Established Research Report”, (“Report”) 23andMe publishes the following Claim:

Intended for research and educational purposes. Not for diagnostic use.

My complaint, as a human subject of this Report, is that 23andMe provides no distinction —other than the Claim itself— to justify why this Report is not for diagnostic use when the contents of the Report itself are sufficient for diagnostic use by the definition of a diagnosis of Tay-Sachs disease and of Tay-Sachs carrier status.

Thus, I claim that the negligence of 23andMe to justify its Claim endangers my safety as I myself am unable to reconcile this apparent contradiction without this distinguishing information which 23andMe withholds from me and thus I am unable to best act to protect my health and the health of my potential children.

They are making medical claims. We don’t know whether the test works and whether patients are taking actions that could put them in jeopardy based on the test.

Alberto Gutierrez, Director of the FDA’s Office of In Vitro Diagnostic Device Evaluation and Safety, 2010

Indeed.

Telestroke has another success

Mayo Clinic is expanding both its telemedicine and its robot presence in Florida by rolling out a new stroke telemedicine project. Mayo's first partner in the project is Parrish Medical Center in Titusville, Fla. On April 30, an In Touch Health Multipresence Robot joined the staff in Parrish to allow
Mayo Clinic physicians to consult from afar by robot-assisted teleconference on stroke patients.

It's just like "being at the foot of a patient's bed," Kevin Barrett, M.D., a vascular neurologist at Mayo Clinic's Florida campus, told the Jacksonville Business Journal.  "You can examine their mental status, language function, facial movements, strength in the arms and legs by asking them to perform certain maneuvers, and the bedside nurse can assist with some components of the exam."

The telemedicine project is aimed at connecting stroke specialists with local physicians to allow patients to be treated more quickly and closer to home. And time is critical with these patients. When a stroke patient arrives at the emergency department, that triggers a call to the Mayo neurologist. And "with the assistance of a nurse at the patient's bedside, the doctor can remotely examine the patient," after the patient is moved to a hospital room.

What patients and medical staff at the hospital see during the consult is a "live image of the Mayo Clinic physician" on the monitor screen atop the robot. The fact that the image is where the robot's head would be adds to the effect, since the robot is "shaped like a human,"

Francisco Garcia, medical director of the emergency department for Parrish Medical Center, told the journal.

The Florida telemedicine project, along with a stroke telemedicine project in Arizona, received a CoDE Innovation Fund award from the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation in 2009 and 2010, helping to
make the roll out possible.
