Geert Wilders leading a new Euro-Trend: Right Libertarian and stridently Anti-Islamist

Pro-Free Market, Pro-Gay Rights & Pro-Israel

Excerpt from Ed West, columnist & social commentator at the UK Daily Telegraph "The future of Right-wing politics – 'libertarian Islamophobes'" June 9:

Wilders is the philosemitic, pro-gay rights, free marketer usually referred to in the British media as “far-Right” for holding the outrageous opinion that the Dutch should not be a minority in their own country. But the BBC gave a better description this morning when they described him as a “libertarian Islamophobe”.

That is true enough, for Wilders is part of an interesting trend in European politics towards socially liberal ethnic nationalists...

in Europe in general and in the Netherlands in particular, where the anti-immigration movement has become increasingly socially liberal. This might have been an inevitable result of a liberal, tolerant and/or (delete as applicable) depraved and rather sex-mad continent importing immigrants from the most puritanical parts of the world...

Elon Musk Weighs in On WSJ Piece, and Future of SpaceX, PEHUB

"Andy Pasztor's article in the Journal was, I'm sorry to say, rife with errors. He was off by a factor of ten on what it would cost SpaceX to develop a launch escape system. Also, under no circumstances would SpaceX be seeking a financing round from the taxpayers. That doesn't make any sense."

Female Red-backed Shrike, Brownsman (Mark Breaks)
Dropping in to say hello; a Common Rosefinch (Mark Breaks)

Farnes 20th ever Quail (Mark Breaks)

Wednesday 9th June comments: Today has seen some major changes on the islands. The breeding birds are bracing themselves for something sinister (and I’m not talking about an idiot with a garden cane!) but my old friend... the weather. A low pressure system has developed over the islands bringing brisk north-easterly winds which could bring problems for our breeding seabirds. Its not just a problem for the birds, as the strong winds also prevented boats from sailing today so no visitors and the team will face a few days cut-off from the outside world. However forget our small inconveniences, its the seabirds which we should worry about...
The next few days will make or break our season - will the storm be strong enough to cause the seabirds some serious problems? Will enough rain fall to start flooding Puffin burrows? So many questions, so few answers at this moment, but I'll be pleased to see out the weekend unscathed. Lets hope the weather gods are looking favourably upon us.
However it wasn't all bad news as although the weather brought uncertainty to the breeding seabirds, small numbers of passage migrants arrived looking for food and shelter. The highlights included a stunning female Red-backed Shrike (which devoured one of our Rock Pipit chicks!), a Common Rosefinch (not that common!) and a Quail. However as Inner Farne had claimed the first ever Black Kite the previous week, it was the turn of the mighty Brownsman to bite back – as they claimed all the birds, leaving the Inner Farne team frustrated but 'fired' for tomorrow. I suspect things are about to get interesting.
On a final note - thanks for all the messages of support regarding the Arctic Tern incident - still in disbelief (and shock) at what happened and don't be put off - we welcome thousands of great people, who enjoy the wonders that are the Farne Islands - so keep on supporting us!

How Bad Could the Oil Leak Get?

“Has the oil spill created a doomsday scenario” for the Gulf? MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann asks. I didn’t use the word Doomsday — they did. It’s not good to predict things will get too horrible because that just gives the “denialist” movement more to complain about. So let’s just say things could possibly get even worse.

Today on another MSNBC show I happened to catch another new graphic showing the oil traveling around the west coast of Florida, entering the loop current, and going up the east and southern coasts of Florida and then up the Atlantic side of the U.S. Given all the devastation that is probably going to cause, I doubt BP will be with us much longer. RIP, BP. Another talking head was talking about setting off a nuclear bomb, an idea I’m seeing more and more online. For the record, the Obama administration has said that idea is nowhere on the table, and it shouldn’t be.

This clip from Countdown features oil and gas expert Robert Cavnar talking about the potential of an “underground blowout, ” or oil forced out through the ocean floor due to high pressures from the attempts at drilling and capping so far. This is probably why the “Top Kill” procedure was stopped so abruptly — U.S. scientists, including Steven Chu, discovered that the pressures under the ocean floor had built up to levels that could blow the whole thing underground. And that would be kind of a “beyond doomsday” scenario, according to Mr. Olbermann. If this clip seems uncomfortably terrifying, keep in mind that Olbermann’s job is to anger people and keep his ratings up. That is not to say this couldn’t happen though. Senator Bill Nelson of Florida thinks it is happening already.

It also seems very odd to me, suspicious even, that there aren’t hundreds of ships in the Gulf sucking up this oil somehow. It can be done. People have been sending in ideas on how to do it for weeks. Yet there is hardly anything out there — visibly — absorbing this oil. That is the reason so many conspiracy theories are making the rounds, and why some of them are kind of believable.

Below is more information on the possibilities of this “doomsday” (not my word!) scenario occurring, according to Senator Bill Nelson of Florida and another source.
