Meet me in Saint Louie Louie

What a fantastic city We arrived yesterday late afternoon in Saint Louis Missouri a city with very little traffic totally accessible friendly people and streets lined with red brick houses. Still a couple of days out from my next Presidential Library Truman in Independence MO which is outside of Kansas City. But here is what we did see hereWe went out for dinner at John McGurk's Irish

Sleeping Bear National Park

So today we took a drive along M22 which meanders around beautiful Lake Michigan. It passes through a few little towns and is lined with houses on both sides of the road. There are some spectacular ones and then some that I think we could afford. Either way it was very scenic and beautiful. It is hard to believe that everything freezes up here in the winter. We stopped in the little town of

Well we were blessed with another great day. We went to downtown Traverse City because we wanted to see the sights down there and also check out a little place called House of Doggs. They do a really good job restoring all of these towns and making the

Can it get any worse?: industrial bleach as cancer and HIV cure

On the heels of Scott Gavura’s superb post yesterday on dietary supplement regulation in the US and Canada, I bring you one of the most egregious and obscene product cases I have seen in 15 years of teaching on botanical and non-botanical products: Miracle Mineral Solution. Please accept my apologies in advance for not having a scholarly post for you today – this is just too unbelievable not to share with Science-Based Medicine readers.

On July 30, the FDA released this warning:

FDA NEWS RELEASE

For Immediate Release: July 30, 2010

Consumer Inquiries: 888-INFO-FDA

FDA Warns Consumers of Serious Harm from Drinking Miracle Mineral Solution (MMS)
Product contains industrial strength bleach

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to take Miracle Mineral Solution, an oral liquid also known as “Miracle Mineral Supplement” or “MMS.”  The product, when used as directed, produces an industrial bleach that can cause serious harm to health.

The FDA has received several reports of health injuries from consumers using this product, including severe nausea, vomiting, and life-threatening low blood pressure from dehydration.

Consumers who have MMS should stop using it immediately and throw it away.

MMS is distributed on Internet sites and online auctions by multiple independent distributors. Although the products share the MMS name, the look of the labeling may vary.

The product instructs consumers to mix the 28 percent sodium chlorite solution with an acid such as citrus juice. This mixture produces chlorine dioxide, a potent bleach used for stripping textiles and industrial water treatment. High oral doses of this bleach, such as those recommended in the labeling, can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and symptoms of severe dehydration.

MMS claims to treat multiple unrelated diseases, including HIV, hepatitis, the H1N1 flu virus, common colds, acne, cancer, and other conditions. The FDA is not aware of any research that MMS is effective in treating any of these conditions. MMS also poses a significant health risk to consumers who may choose to use this product for self-treatment instead of seeking FDA-approved treatments for these conditions.

The FDA continues to investigate and may pursue civil or criminal enforcement actions as appropriate to protect the public from this potentially dangerous product.

The FDA advises consumers who have experienced any negative side effects from MMS to consult a health care professional as soon as possible and to discard the product. Consumers and health care professionals should report adverse events to the FDA’s MedWatch program at 800-FDA-1088 or online at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.

Even with this forceful warning, the product website is still live and it is full of the most unreal claims I’ve seen in any online marketing scheme:

This Breakthrough can save your life, or the life of a loved one.
Please read.

The answer to AIDS, hepatitis A,B and C, malaria, herpes, TB, most cancer and many more of mankind’s worse diseases has been found. Many diseases are now easily controlled. More that 75,000 disease victims have been included in the field tests in Africa. Scientific clinical trials have been conducted in a prison in the country of Malawi, East Africa.

Separate tests conducted by the Malawi government produced identical 99% cure results. Over 60% of the AIDS victims that were treated in Uganda were well in 3 days, with 98% well within one month. More than 90% of the malaria victims were well in 4 to 8 hours. Dozens of other diseases were successfully treated and can be controlled with this new mineral supplement. It also works with colds, flu, pneumonia, sore throats, warts, mouth sores, and even abscessed teeth (it’s the only thing that controls and cures abscessed teeth).

The inventor believes that this information is too important to the world that any one person or any group should have control. The free e-book download on this site gives complete details of this discovery. Please help make sure that it gets to the world free. There are many medical facts that have been suppressed and this invention must not be added to that list. The name of the e-book is The Miracle Mineral Supplement of the 21st Century. This book tells the story of the discovery, and how to make and use it. This book can save your life. Give it a try.

No. No. Don’t give it a try.

Instead, please follow this advice from FDA if you are a consumer who has stumbled upon this post in a search term query:

The FDA advises consumers who have experienced any negative side effects from MMS to consult a health care professional as soon as possible and to discard the product. Consumers and health care professionals should report adverse events to the FDA’s MedWatch program at 800-FDA-1088 or online at http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/report.htm.

Blogging colleague, Liz Ditz, brought me this information from the “inventor’s” Q&A blog:

Is taking MMS IV much more efficient than drinking it? Should I stop taking my medication for HIV?

Posted by: admin in AIDS, HIV, Intravenously (IV), MMS General, tags: AIDS, HIV virus, Intravenous treatment, iv, medications, vomit

Please treat me as your son and tell me what best should I do to get rid of this HIV virus. Would you tell me to stop my three drugs medication and when? Is it ok to overlap MMS with current medication? Should I take MMS IV if it’s much more efficient than drinking it? Stopping medication is a big decision for me to make as I always felt to rely on them in order to live. Please help me with your experience and testimonials.

=====

MMS IV is much more effective than taking by mouth. Stop the drugs immediately. HIV is not dangerous. It does not cause AIDS. What causes AIDS is the drugs that you are taking, each one is extremely poisonous. That causes AIDS. The vomiting was a good sign. It means you body is getting rid of bad stuff. It takes a certain amount of courage to stop the drugs, but you really know that they are bad, and that they will not help you live longer. Just depend on the MMS as it is a thousand times better. Read the MMS data a few times. See the logic. Ask yourself that is not more logical that taking poisons. Visit http://www.miraclemineral.org for the MMS book and DVD and http://www.jimhumble.com for more info.

In cases such as these, the US Federal Trade Commission has more power to intervene than even the FDA. False advertising to the point of directing the consumer to harm themselves is much more their purview. In fact, some readers will recall that in 2001 the FTC ran “Operation Cure All,” a multi-agency initiative to target internet health fraud in cooperation with Health Canada.

But I’m wondering where the FTC is in the case of Miracle Mineral Solution. A site search conducted at the time of this post revealed no FTC action against the marketers or manufacturers of this bleach product. I am simply stunned that this product website and associated promotional materials remain online.

This is not a case of a supplement adulterated with a prescription drug or containing trace amounts of heavy metals. This is an active scheme directed not only to driving the consumer to use a harmful product (and even inject it IV), but also encourages the discontinuation of beneficial prescription drugs.

I will be filing a complaint today with the FTC – I encourage those of you so inclined to do so here.

Democrat candidate Bill White balks at Obama visit to Texas

Late Night Breaking News...

From Eric Dondero:

A source has informed Libertarian Republican that former Houston Mayor, and current Democrat nominee for Governor of Texas Bill White, is avoiding Obama's visit to the State. Obama is scheduled to visit Texas on Monday.

According to our source:

He hastily scheduled campaign events all over the state so he could claim he's too busy to meet with the President. And it's no mystery why: Obama is extremely unpopular here, and a photo with the President could sink the White campaign.

Obama's poll numbers nationally are currently in the low 40s. Though, no Texas numbers on Obama have been run in two months, presumably they are much lower in the Lone Star State.

Libertarian Republicans will be joining other GOPers on the steps of the capitol in Austin on Monday to protest ObamaCare and Obama's other socialist agenda items.

Blogging Contest for Libertarian Republicans

From Eric Dondero:

Just wanted to let you all know about a contest my blogging friend (and web design consultant for Libertarian Republican) Wes Messamore is doing right now: he's giving away a one ounce, fine silver coin and trillions of dollars (in real Zimbabwe currency).

Wes is Editor/Publisher of Humble Libertarian, a diehard Rand Paul campaign volunteer and a field coordinator for Young Americans for Liberty.

To enter, all you have to do is sign up for his blog updates- which I highly recommend you do anyways, contest or not! Visit his website here to get your name entered in the drawing.

The deadline is in less than a week so don't hesitate!

Republican Party of Texas "Hands Off Texas" rally against Obama agenda

From Bryan Preston, Communications Dir. RPT:

President Obama is coming to Texas for stops in Austin and Dallas on Monday, August 9. He is coming to Texas to support Democrats like Bill White, who agree with him and would advance his leftwing agenda in Texas. On Monday, Aug 9 at 5:30, come to Austin to respectfully rally and tell the President and his party to keep their liberal policies out of our state.

Where? steps of the State Capitol

The people of Missouri voted overwhelmingly against Obamacare this week. Texans, this is YOUR chance to speak out against Obamacare, cap n tax, the Obama administration's EPA assault on our economy, the Democrats' runaway debt - all of the issues that have put our nation, or freedom and our future in jeopardy. And it's your chance to speak out against the Texas Democrats like Bill White who actively support those policies.

NEW YORK – The Pink Floyd rock music classic "Another Brick in the Wall" has been transformed by a Canadian band to reflect dissent young Iranians have for their government.

Pulls support for Johnny Isakson over Obama Birth Certificate issue

"The truth is really quite simple: the man who is in the White House is there illegally"

From Eric Dondero:

Carl Swensson is the Chairman of the Clayton County Republican Party. He gave an interview to Sharon Rondeau. She started the interview:

You have quite an announcement to make today, Carl. What were the events leading up to it?

Partial Text of Swensson's response from Post & Email:

The way this started out, as for many of us, was the battle over eligibility, trying to figure out if the person in the White House is actually legally eligible to be there. We all know that Article II, Section 1, clause 5 clearly states that the president must be a “natural born Citizen.” Now there are plenty of people out there who will try to pervert the meaning of that by citing things within the 14th Amendment, where, by the way, the term “natural born” is not used. “Native born” is. However, we don’t care about “native born.” We’re talking about a president who is not “natural born” by his own admission. He’s already told us in his book that his father was Kenyan, a British subject, when he was born, giving him dual allegiance.

We also know without a doubt that Senate Resolution 511 back in April 2008 was passed in the Senate wherein they acknowledged John McCain as being “natural born,” and they did that based on the fact that both of his parents were U.S. citizens. Then, of course, they went a step farther and claimed that the military base in Panama was American soil, and there are still some serious misgivings about that interpretation.

The more important aspect is that they clearly recognized in a unanimous vote, in which Obama participated, to bestow that “natural born” citizenship upon him, and all communications concerning this, as you have probably read time and time again, indicate that the people who were defining “natural born” at the time had a much clearer understanding of it when they stated that to be “natural born,” both parents have to be U.S. citizens.

Based on that alone, we put forth calls, meaning everybody that I know and knew who has been concerned with this. The calls went out to our congressmen; they went out to senators. I personally served my senators with the citizens’ grand jury presentments, and I clearly included there all of the salient points about Obama’s ineligibility; also included in that were criminal complaints, one from Cmdr. Walter Fitzpatrick. Those complaints were added to those of four other military men who signed their own criminal complaints for treason and fraud.

We have not been able to get anything back from congressmen or senators, specifically on the Republican side. I don’t expect the Democrats to have anything to do with this because it’s not in their best interest as they try to dismantle this country. We know that they’re Marxists; we know that they’re anti-American, so you can expect little else from them. But when it comes to Republicans, there’s a higher bar for them. The bar is that they are going to uphold their oath. It’s really quite simple. They take it, and it’s a contract with America, with their constituents, with the voters who put them in office. Yet we have witnessed time and again that these Republican senators, from Georgia, in particular, have sent me letters and emails concerning Obama’s eligibility, and both of them parroted the same thing that they’ve always said: and that is, “Well, he’s shown his birth certificate, and we believe him to be “natural born,” so we’re dropping it.”

I firmly believe also that these letters are being generated by the interns within their offices and they never see them. However, that does not take them off the hook. It is coming from their offices, and they are responsible for the content of those letters.

So I focused in on one person in particular, and that was Johnny Isakson. He’s coming up for re-election. I would like to say that I’m a part of the Republican Party here in Clayton County, GA. During a meeting on July 7, a motion was put forward to withdraw the support of the Clayton County GOP for Johnny Isakson because of his failure to vet and to stand up for us concerning the eligibility issue of Barack Obama.

Later in the interview:

So Bob [Holtzclaw] came up with the motion to withdraw support for Isakson. Since we had no other candidate running for this Senate seat, we decided to shift our support over to the Libertarian candidate, Chuck Donovan. The meeting went well; the motion was put forth, and it carried. It was passed by a vote of 3-2 with several others abstaining at that point, not knowing which way to go on it. That’s history, true and correct history.

A source has indicated to Libertarian Republican that this may be more of a case of "radical Libertarians" winning over a local Republican group, and asserting themselves into the endorsement process, rather than longstanding Republicans being persuaded to back the Libertarian.

Editor's Note - We have been unable to fully confirm the information in this article. However, our source, says that the endorsement is "highly likely" to be accurate. This, despite the fact that Swensson is of a somewhat questionable character.

An unfortunate case

It’s been a while since I posted an interesting case, but here’s one that I saw in follow-up during my flow cytometry month.

The patient is a 44 yo M with a history of end-stage renal disease secondary to hypertensive nephropathy who was awaiting transplant > 2 years and undergoing peritoneal dialysis.  Fatigue and anemia and thrombocytopenia developed in late 2009 and because the anemia was attributed to his renal impairment, the thrombocytopenia was felt to be immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and he was treated with oral prednisone.  As you might expect, his fatigue persisted – as did the anemia and thrombocytopenia.  In addition, on review of systems in January he complained of drenching night sweats, fevers, a 30# weight loss and occasional nose bleeds.  Of significance he also had left upper quadrant cramping.  A physical exam at the time showed a palpable spleen and did NOT uncover any lymphadenopathy.

Labs showed the following:

WBC 6900 (normal diff), Hgb 8.6 L, MCV 101 H, Plt 37,000 L

BUN 66 H, Cr 6.35 H, Uric acid 15.9 H, LDH 1767 H (range 100-190), albumin 3.2 L, and slightly increased AST and ALT.  Calcium levels were normal.

A CT abdomen, bone marrow examination, and representative flow plots (with the population of interest painted red) showed the following.  Diagnosis?  Comments?

Joint Pathology Center Set to Open April 2011

The Joint Pathology Center (JPC) will begin its mission of providing secondary consultation for the federal government, education, research, and operation of the National Pathology Tissue Repository in Forest Glen, MD, by next April, the center’s interim director, Colonel Thomas Baker, MD. The JPC will be fully operational and staffed by 29 full-time pathologists by September 2011.

“Our mission is to serve as the premier pathology reference center for the federal government,” said Dr. Baker. “We’ll be establishing our mission in April 2011, but that will just be the starting point.” He hopes to partner and collaborate with other federal agencies on secondary consultations, research, and education.

The JPC is intended to serve the key functions of the Department of Defense’s (DoD) Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP), including the National Pathology Tissue Repository and secondary consultation services. The AFIP is slated to close permanently by Sept. 15, 2011, as a result of the 2005 Defense Base Realignment and Closure Law (BRAC). Earlier this year, AFIP officials announced that after Sept. 30, 2010, it would no longer accept non-federal civilian consultation cases.

Once it begins operations, the JPC pathologists will perform secondary and telepathology consultations at the Forest Glen facility, where the National Pathology Tissue Repository will be located. A 6,000-square-foot histology laboratory will be located at the new Walter Reed National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. There will also be a 3,600 square-foot state-of-the-art molecular laboratory in Bethesda to support consultation. Baker noted that all subspecialities will be represented at these facilities, and services offered to the Department of Defense and Veterans Administration, as well as other federal agencies.

The JPC will also offer pathology consultative services in specialty areas like nerve biopsy, depleted uranium, and testing on imbedded fragments from wounded soldiers. Depleted uranium analysis is performed for many Gulf War veterans, while imbedded fragment testing is currently performed for soldiers who are victims of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Morbid Anatomy Library New Arrival: "The Dead," Jack Burman, 2010

He shoots in concentration camps, sterile medical laboratories, crumbling archives, curious private collections. He notes that about 90% of his work is done in the Catholic world, places “richly fixated on the body of Mary, the body of Christ, the bodies of the martyrs” and with a “history of sensually violent and death-riddled art.” It’s a tradition that doesn’t exist in North America, and his book serves as a reminder of “everything we left; everything that made us, and somehow drove us to undo that and make ourselves over.--"Jack Burman: Book of the Dead," The Canadian National Post

Canadian photographer Jack Burman's new book--titled, simply, The Dead--is a breathtaking book. Gorgeously produced and sober, this quiet and lovely book is filled with Burman's large-scale photographs exploring the topic of death via a meditative documentation of a variety of human remains. Many of the 52 images which make up this book picture artifacts--from specimens to mummies to medical preparations--that will be familiar to aficionados of medical museums and ossuaries, but the quiet restraint and rich detail Burman achieves in his classically composed images elevate the book above the usual fare.

The book is published by The Magenta Foundation; you can find out more about it--and purchase the book in one of its three editions--by clicking here. You can also come pay the book a visit in the Morbid Anatomy Library where my copy resides atop the New Arrivals pile. You can read more about the book in the recent Canadian National Post article quoted above by clicking here.

Webb Troubles Continue

Telescope promises new look at universe -- if NASA can get it into space, Orlando Sentinel

"When it works, and if it works, the James Webb Space Telescope could revolutionize astronomy by peering so deep into space that scientists soon could study the dawn of time. But construction of NASA's next big telescope has been so hurt by delays and cost overruns that even its staunchest champion in Congress reached a breaking point. In a letter dated June 29, U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., all but ordered NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden to assemble a panel of outside experts to ensure the Webb project doesn't break its latest promise: a 2014 launch on a $5 billion budget. "We like the concept of the Webb, but I tell you, we're not in the overrun business," said Mikulski, who chairs the Senate subcommittee with oversight of NASA's budget."
