High blood pressure damages the brain, a new study has found.
Researchers say people as young as 40 who have uncontrolled high blood pressure have brains that age faster.
"The message here is really clear: People can influence their late-life brain health by knowing and treating their blood pressure at a young age, when you wouldn't necessarily be thinking about it," senior author Charles DeCarli, professor of neurology and director of the University of California Davis Alzheimer's Disease Center, said in a statement.
Researchers measured the blood pressure and gave MRIs to 579 Americans, with an average age of 39.
Those with high blood pressure had "significantly less healthy" brains compared to the people with normal results, the study found.
The researchers said they don't know what exactly causes the brain to age more rapidly in high blood pressure sufferers, but said hypertension causes the arteries to stiffen which can result in increased pressure on the blood vessels of the brain.
The study will be published next month in the Lancet Neurology journal.

Becky Lacayo and Chris Kyper received the award for cutest couple on Match Day at Temples Lewis Katz School of Medicine.
Kyper and Lacayo are among more than 200 seniors headed to residencies this year at Temples Lewis Katz School of Medicine, and were among more than 43,000 applicantsa record numberacross the country, according to the National Resident Matching Program. For Match Day, which fell on St. Patricks Day this year, Temples doctors in training, their families, and medical school faculty members packed the atrium in the Medical Education and Research Building for the countdown to noon, when the students could open their envelopes.
Lewis Katz School of Medicine Dean Larry Kaiser and Temple University Provost JoAnne A. Epps celebrated with medical school seniors on Match Day.
Kyper, a native of Lebanon, Pennsylvania who plans to specialize in neurology, and Lacayo, of Miami, who will go into emergency medicine, split the difference between their hometowns, listing institutions in both Philadelphia and Florida among their top choices.
Well be happy wherever we go, as long a we stay together, Kyper said.
Cheers erupted as the students tore open their envelopes.
Students Cody Nathan and John St. Angelo show their Match letters.
The top specialties Temple students matched into were internal medicine (46 students), emergency medicine (23 students), pediatrics (15 students), medicine-preliminary (19 students) and radiology-diagnostic (11 students). The top institutions they matched with were Temple University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, UCLA Medical Center, and St. Lukes University Health Network. Five students are headed to Columbia and Cornell medical centers in New York, and four to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Pamela Boodram, from Brooklyn, New York, plans to specialize in internal medicine.
Kyper and Lacayo got their wish to stay together. Both matched in Jacksonville, Florida: Kyper to the Mayo Clinic and Lacayo to University of Florida Health Jacksonville.
Kyper plans to specialize in neurology; Lacayo in emergency medicine.

Lacayos mom, Carolina Lacayo, was thrilled to hear her daughter would be moving back to Florida after four years of medical school in Philadelphia.

Young people with neurological conditions are being forced to live in old people's homes without specialist care, a report has found.
There are serious flaws in the way more than one million people disabled by neurological conditions are identified, the report by the charity Sue Ryder, based on Freedom of Information (FOI) data, has revealed.
The Forgotten Millions report said only 5% of 131 responding local authorities know how many individuals with any neurological condition they care for.
Despite necessitating different care requirements, only 6% of local authorities categorise all specific neurological conditions including motor neurone disease, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy.
Meanwhile, only 10% of local authorities have an agreed commissioning strategy for people with neurological conditions, it found.
Paul Woodward, CEO of Sue Ryder, said one size doesn't fit all when it comes to service delivery.
"Residential care for a 23-year-old with a brain injury shouldn't look the same as residential care for an 85-year-old who is frail and needs support," he said.
"And yet we do not see enough provision of services specifically for people with neurological conditions who may be from younger generations than others with care needs.
"The Government's focus on dementia in recent years is to be commended. However, dementia is not the only neurological condition.
"Often those such as multiple sclerosis, Huntington's and motor neurone disease get overlooked. We would like to encourage a more holistic approach to services for people living with neurological conditions."

Norovirus infects 45 staff members at Jewish General Hospital
An outbreak of norovirus among staff members at Montreal's Jewish General Hospital led to the temporary closure of the neurology clinic last week, CBC has learned.
About 45 employees at the hospital came down with flu-like symptoms last week after eating food from the auxiliary-run coffee shop.
The coffee shop, which is run separately from the main cafeteria, serves hundreds of staff and visitors to the hospital each day.
Last week, several staff members at the neurology clinic fell ill with flu-like symptoms including diarrhea, cramps, and fever.
The clinic was closed for half a day on Thursday and all of Friday.
"The hospital is very concerned about the safety of its staff and of its visitors," said hospital spokesman Glenn Nashen.
Until the infection prevention and control team determines the specific cause of the outbreak, the coffee shop will remain closed, according to hospital officials.
Nashen said as far as the hospital knows, only staff at the hospital caught the virus.
He expects the hospital to be back to normal by Monday.

Neurology professor named as chair of Alzheimer's research endowment
Neurology professor Dr. Charles DeCarli has been named the initial chair of an endowment devoted to Alzheimer's disease research in the UC Davis Health System.
He is also director of UC Davis' Alzheimer's disease center and an expert on dementias and neuroimaging, and his research has led to advances in prevention and treatment of the disease, which affects 5.4 million Americans.
The $1.63 million Victor and Genevieve Orsi Endowed Chair will be used for a fellowship in behavioral neurology.
Roseville resident Victor Orsi was diagnosed with Alzheimer's before his death at 88 in August 2006. Genevieve Orsi died in 2010.
