From DC To Delhi

While planning a 3 month backpacking trip, Lena Jackson made a proverbial 180 degree turn in her thought process. Why just wander through various countries when she could use the time working to become a filmmaker. With this new mission in hand, Lena left Washington D.C. and headed for Delhi. Her blog is a recounting of her experiences as she journeyed through S.E. Asia and beyond..

Mongolia Episode two

Mongolia 2I am sitting on the train from Beijing South Station headed to Jinan. The trip will take about three hours and I am off to see Du Ying a friend from Madison who completed her PhD in economics last October. Wow so much has happened over the past year not to mention the last hour I love to travel. I love meeting new people and discovering new places but itrsquos hard to articulat

i love the smell of DEET in the morning

I think Irsquom starting to get used to the smell of my DEETsaturated skin. But somehow I keep ending up with more mosquito bites each morning. Diving never happened yesterday which is a real bummer. I think the woman flaked out on me or else her story about there not being enough tanks of air was true. But I was all dressed packed nourished and ready to go before I heard from her. So I we

Delhi my new home

So the Volcanic Ash cloud meant that in the end we all had an extra week in Delhi. In hindsight it is funny as I was worried that I would only have half a day in Delhi which I didn't think was long enough. I was pleased to be on an organised tour as it was great to have others to talk to who were in the same situation and we all worked hard to keep our spirits up and to plan our days to relieve

Women of Italy Shotguns

I fall in love with these Roman women at least once a day. Sometimes it happens during my tram ride to school sometimes while waiting for my espresso to served at a local bar and sometimes it's while I'm a few beers deep in a Piazza on a Friday night. Italy has a lot more good looking girls than in the United States but they're different. I don't know what it is but I haven't figured out how to

Road trip

1st October is National Day in China and we all get 7 days off so despite dire warnings about not travelling on the equivalent of our Bank Holiday I ventured on a long distance bus tour to Hunan province escorted by my good friend Xu Fie and her husband lsquoAlanrsquo and 3 of their friends. They all spoke some English so I had a great support network to manoeuvre me around and make sure I

Dublin Ireland Higgins’ in the House

After spending three magical days in Paris by myself I flew to the small island community otherwise known as Ireland and have been having so much fun w the Higgins'. Eileen and I are being put up in Jen's amazing house in Sutton and have had the most wonderful dinners at Ciao and brunches at Cafe Provence. I won't give too much away because it's only right that Eileen blogs about this hers

Surely That’s Not Your Real Name

So here I am again Irsquove had a few people asking me if Irsquom still alive and when the next blog installment was going to be so here it goes. The hostel has been full for so many weeks now and times have been fun in all sorts of ways. One of the funniest things is the names people have from other parts of the world. Considering the complexities and unusualness of my name you would have th

Kearas Blog

Keara writes 28th September 2010Today I went to Disneyland with Uncle Randall Auntie Teresa Irena and Carmel. We went on lots of rides today. There were scary peaceful and water rides. One of the most scary rides was Indiana Jones Adventure. The peaceful ride was Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. The water ride was Splash Mountain. We all got soaking wet except Uncle Randall. Uncle Randall's hat

Rio Growing on Me

Due to a table tennis tournament I have had to leave the Lagoa Guesthouse for five nights but I have booked a return as you can really see why it gets the highest rating of any hostel in Rio atmosphere the key to any good hostel. Took a taxi over to Hostel Arco Verde. My driver although pleasant enough was a bit clueless first he took me to the heart of the Copacabana and stopped at a polic

The Road to Machu Picchu Day 1

We were up at 7AM and for the first and last time we had breakfast at Intiquilla. A few pieces of stale bread and coca tea I was glad we didnrsquot bother getting up early for it on any other day. We went out the front at 730 and waited in the street for our transfer. At 740 a young Peruvian guy holding a piece of paper approached us.ldquoJoseph FrostrdquoldquoYeah.rdquoldquoIrsq

Moab to Monument Valley 1031010

For some reason the long blog I wrote yesterday vanished into cyberspace. So I am just checking in. We will leave Monument Valley after four days of relishing the immense red rocks remembering the John Wayne movies that were filmed here and head south into Arizona. We are pretty well satiated with canyons cliffs red Anasazi ruins. We even hope to find a bit of green landscape in AZ migh

On the Mesta

Hello all The mesta is a very different landscape from what we have been through some find it boring but Helen and I both like the rolling hills and vastness of it. We have had rain and I discovered how to keep my shoes dry repair my poncho I suffer from poncho envy when I see someone who looks a little dryier. Our family of travellers has changed some are flying ahead and some have had to

A change in lifestyle

Not sure what to make of my new situation. I will be taking classes in the afternoon as it is better suited to my level of Spanish. They tired to stick me in a class where I would be learning the past for the 3rd time I was quick to squash that. Quepos is much more touristy than I expected but it is also full of locals so I think it will be all right. I really like my family so far so that is go

Keara’s Blog 2

Keara Writes 29th September 201029th September 2010Today I went to the California Adventure Park it was so awesome. California Adventure Park is just across the block from Disneyland Park. Everyone went on the twilight Tower of Terror. The Tower of Terror was a real hotel except now it is a scary and terrifying hotel ride. First you go into a room and watch TV then we walk to a line. The lady gi

Bangalore

For the train to Bangalore I booked a 2nd class AC sleeper. I was a little nervous after the 4 hr journey in the 3rd class compartment from Varkala where the children were at a 15 on the volume dial. This 12 hr journey was actually quite easy. I jumped on at around 830 pm and found my upper bunk quite easily. I popped an Ativan watched an episode of the Sopranos and next thing I knew it was

waiting for the positives

Ugh... having a down point. I have limited friends no job and not a whole lot of funds left.Part of me wants to take out a loan travel for a few months and return to my fabulous life in Melbourne. Is this all because I am now out of my comfort zone Am I homesick Having a lack on employment is the major player here an old work collegue gave me a worse than terrible reference the owner of the
