Beer. It’s a wonderful thing. But, this particular Brew Master – yes, Kris Kalav is a Brew Master in the work-a-day world – prefers rum, martinis or the occasional umbrella cocktail. He has recently begun blogging about his various travels and some very interesting encounters. Oh, beer will be mentioned at some point. Brew Master…

English Man In Moscow

post thumbnail

This site is brought to you by “Poo Vision, Inc.” – or so states the blog introduction. (Might just be true…) Justin is a British ex-pat living in Russia with his wife and young son. He is also a stay-at-home-dad. His entries are a mix of ex-pat tips, child-rearing “lessons learned” and “how tos” for creating a new life in Moscow – all with a humorous twist.

An Update on Red Banners

I have oneI found a row of printing shops on the way back from the subway station and a few of them print red banners. I came up with a sentence stopped in at one on the way back from the noodle man last week and ordered a banner. It was as simple as that. My banner says Welcome to my cold shabby hovel. That may sound ridiculous to you because you aren't in my Culture and Society class. But

Husker Pride

Given the gravity of the game and the high quality well debatable of the competition I thought the Huskers deserved a blog dedicated to their outstanding performance against Mizzou. First off way to go Roy Helu. Your quality of character makes you one deserving rushing yards record holder. Second I like your style T Magic. You're turning into the exact kind of quarterback who will lead Nebr

Chengdu Comforts

The flight from New York to Hong Kong was good. Although tired the second flight from Hong Kong to Chengdu went smoothly with just enough leg room in the front aisle bulkhead seat. The Chengdu arrival was at about 1030 at night Wednesday. Traveling from New York to Chengdu you lose two days because of flying time and then the time change. I was picked up at the airport by friends with a big SUV

angkor wat etc day 2

Today was second day around Angkor temples first around the major sights. We approached the day as if we had just paid premium dollar for front row stalls at a major stand up comedian ldquoImpress Usrdquo. To be fair it did. Kath and I on our 1perday rental bicycles sam on his 5 bike we ticked off them all apart from Angkor Wat itself saved for sunrise the next day. My London cyclin

angkor wat day 3

Second 430am start in 3 days This time to see Angkor Wat at sunrise. Truly it is an exceptional sight. Both of us are pretty backward at appreciating the typical tourist sights ldquomusem legs generally kick in after half an hour max but even for us it was pretty much ldquowowrdquo as we watched the sun crept up from behind the silhouette of the five towers munching happily on banana p

PP killing fields and s21

Saturday 30th OctoberToday was spent touring the killing fields and S21 prison at Phnom Penh driven round by our slight crazy but amazingly informative tuk tuk driver Peter. Peter was aged 1215 when the Khmer rouge regime was at its height in 19751978 and so was able to tell us firsthand about what it was like being here at this time. He was clearly keen to pass on his knowledge as he spent a

"I’ll Take Manhattan…"

Yes indeed I certainly will...this is a magical city with treasures for everyone. This will probably be my final blog until sometime in a week or so after I get to a city that has a different type of treasure to offer...Cairo. I went to Harlem one day. The first thing I saw when I got off the subway was someone wearing a tshirt that said I'm Black...Please Don't Shoot. Shocked at first but

You know where you are You’re in the jungle baby…

Suzanne here... We've settled in Chiang Mai ok. On the way here we saw a coach the same as ours smashed up by the side of the road. I think it was a night bus we'd already decided not to take them as we've heard they are dangerous. I'm very glad now. The guesthouse TK guesthouse is basic but clean and a bargain at 200THB per night. They are friendly and also offer cheap tours and onward travel

Alone in India…

Sonun sitz ich also allein hier.

Lima

On my way to Lima I stopped by the Nazca lines. Sadly you have to hire an airplane to get a better view of the figures but you can still see the lines from a hill. Then I continued to Lima. As usual I almost died like 10 times on my way to Lima because of the craziness of the Peruvian drivers. Having said that the highway was nothing compared with the absolute traffic caos in Lima. They explain

A Peaceful Place

We got up Wednesday to sunshine and decided to spend a day outside. Alex took me to an area of london that she use to love and went in search of her favorite hang out. We found it unchanged and just as aclectic as always. Troubadour. A dark entrance with an ornately carved wooden door. I would have walked right past it luckly Alex knew what we were looking for I of course loved the door

Beached out

Louise's SectionYay it's me that gets to write first again and I have had some beer and now onto the vino so sorry if this makes no sense. We have now made it to Coolangatta South Gold Coast. It's hot and there are beaches everywhere. I am continuously strolling along beaches and collecting shells and stones like a small child ready to make a nice bathroom decoration on my arrival home. Even C

Grichou Shenyang

Tiger Leaping Gorge and ShangriLa

Tiger Leaping GorgeTiger Leaping Gorge is well known for its scenic beauty and was what originally drew us to Yunnan Province so we were excited about the opportunity to walk it. TLG was carved by the Yangzi River. On one side are steep slopes rising 1500 feet above the river but the other side is sheer cliffs rising 12000 feet above the river to snowcapped peaks reminiscent of the Maroon Bell

Adaptation

Comme un camlonLife is weird. Humans are weird. And I guess I am part of the lot.
