Dr. Dewayne Nash spent most of his life taking care of others as a family physician in Central Texas. About two years ago, he started noticing that his memory wasn #39;t what it used to be, so he decided to get checked out at UT Southwestern #39;s Memory Clinic. Testing showed that he was in the early stages of mild cognitive impairment---with his strong family history of Alzheimer #39;s, Dr. Nash decided on the spot to retire. Now he is spending his time as a clinical trial volunteer at UT Southwestern and sharing his journey with others through his blog. Myopia – 2012 Lancet review

Myopia (nearsightedness) has emerged as a major health issue in east Asia, because of:

- increasingly high prevalence in the past few decades. It now affacts 80-90% in school-leavers.
- sight-threatening pathologies associated with high myopia, which now affect 10-20% of those completing secondary schooling in east Asia.

Similar, but less marked, changes are occurring in other parts of the world.

The higher prevalence of myopia in east Asian cities seems to be associated with increasing educational pressures, combined with life-style changes, which have reduced the time children spend outside.

There are no reported major genes for school myopia, although there are several genes associated with high myopia. Any genetic contribution to ethnic differences may be small.

There are some optical and pharmacological interventions that seem promising for preventing the development of myopia or slowing its progression, but the evidence is still preliminary.

Rock The Night Karaoke This is the reason why we held this charity night at The Red House in Newport Pagnell. Please read - As a family we moved to Eyemouth in January of this year to start a new life in Scotland, something we #39;d long wanted to do. Katie-Lou wasn #39;t too keen on the idea at first but she had her great friend Shannon already up here and had made lots of other friends in the times when we have previously holidayed in Eyemouth. Needless to say, as she always has done, Katie-Lou fitted right in and made lots of new friends and was very popular and having a great time. On the 4th of June 2012 at Eyemouth Harbour her life and ours changed forever. We believe Katie-Lou tried to rescue her friend from 20 foot waves that swept them both out to sea. While her friend was rescued unhurt Katie-Lou was bashed against the harbour wall and swept onto the rocks which resulted in her going untold minutes without breathing or a heartbeat. Katie-Lou was saved from death but has acquired serious brain injury and remains in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh. She struggled so hard for 3 weeks in intensive care but kept fighting and eventually was well enough to move on to the neurology ward where she remains, getting stronger, having operations, going through physio and rehab. We #39;re hoping she will be well enough to return home early next year. She will need a lot of support, equipment and adaptions to her home. The body seeks balance. So, when we have the stress portion of the nervous system we need something to drive the parasympathetic system. Because only one system can operate at one point in time. So, as we eat food we excite parasympathetic cranial nerves. Because this resting and digesting system has a lot of nerves that go to our taste buds. As we eat food and taste food it will excite the para sympathetic system reducing stress. When you add a blood sugar problem to the picture this is where the overeating, especially those foods you are not supposed to eat, really picks up.
