Ruining the Environment, One State at a Time
A bill requiring the Department of Natural Resources to commercially log trees in two southeastern Minnesota state parks, which officials say would be unprecedented, has sparked the debate and galvanized park supporters. The bill will be voted on next week in the full Minnesota House. (Read the story here.) In Minnesota, the Republicans might not run the governor’s office, but they have taken over the state legislature. They are busy trying to pollute what is left of our environment with more dirty energy and now with logging our state parks. The MN Democratic governor, Mark Dayton, is not exactly protecting the environment either. He has signed a law allowing destructive mining in the “Iron Range” — which is good for jobs, but bad for the environment. This new law (and others) according to the article in the Star Tribune: “. . . . . exempts the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board from complying with the same environmental rules that apply to the rest of state government.. . . . This is hardly the only attempt to grant special exemptions from environmental laws to favored industries or projects. In recent weeks alone, at least three such bills have been introduced [...]

Since it doesn’t show up in my total content aggregator (RSS), and I don’t know how to author filter Movable Type posts easily, I thought I would point to my guest posts over at the Sepia Mutiny weblog:

Addendum: I push all the stuff in my total content aggregator to my twitter account, Gene Expression Facebook page (though this includes GNXP.com posts not by me), and my Facebook page. I’ve also got a NetworkedBlogs page which you can subscribe to or something. Probably other things I’ve forgotten about to be honest (e.g., here’s my Talk Islam author page. Don’t contribute there anymore). Also, I should mention that Razib on Books has its own domain, razibkhanbooks.com. TRIACS
Hi Guys, I've been lumbered with the repair of a "SMPS battery Charger" as fitted to a motorised wheelchair. It's symptons were a blown fuse. I found two large caps and the bridge rectifier were blown, and after quite a bit of work, I've come across an 8 Amp triac. on testing, it would appear that t
Another genome blogger…. | Gene Expression
Reader “Diogenes,” with ADMIXTURE in hand, and way more knowledge of archaeology than I can comprehend, now has a blog. Why am I starting a blog…:
I named my blog Artemis since I believe the “Neolithic” which shaped our world for the last 10,000 years is now ending. Demeter’s shackles are broken.
I’m starting my own Project playing with ADMIXTURE and other programs. I’m not a scientist (even though I work in a field related to biology), but I’ll try to substantiate my thoughts whenever possible.
His interest seems to be the Neolithic Revolution/Evolution in Europe.

How Those Awesome Time Traveling NBA Commercials Are Made [Video]
If you've watched any basketball games this past season, you might have noticed some really great commercials that showed current NBA stars in their earlier life (in high school, college, etc) interacting with people from "the future" (or 2011). It's amazing when you see 2005 version of Kevin Durant "react" to the fact that he'll be playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder (a non-existant team at that point). Or 2011 people telling the young players how great they'll grow up to be. More »

Life Under Dictatorship | Cosmic Variance
As the fighting continues in Libya, the Gaddafi government has invited foreign reporters to Tripoli, as long as they stay in the Rixos hotel. They are barred from leaving to report on actual events, but occasionally get to hear government statements or get taken on organized tours for propaganda purposes.
That tightly-controlled system was violated this morning when Eman al-Obeidy, a Libyan woman from the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, escaped from two days of imprisonment at the hands of Gaddafi’s militia. She managed to flee to the Rixos, where she told reporters about her ordeal. According to Obeidy, she was tied up, beaten, and raped by 15 men, who also defecated and urinated on her. She pleaded for her friends who are still in custody, and showed a number of bruises and injuries on her body.
Being surrounded by international media did not keep her safe, as she was soon confronted by security forces as she told her story. Despite resisting frantically and some attempts at intervention by journalists, she was taken away in a car. Hotel employees sided with the security forces, threatening Obeidy and using knives to hold off journalists who were trying to help her. Soon thereafter, government spokespeople accused her of being drunk and mentally ill, claiming that her story of rape and abuse was a fantasy.
Here’s a video of Obeidy being taken away. Warning: intense and very real.
