The Reality of Florida Beach Camping

When I was a teenager, my plan was to pack my gear and head for the South Sea Islands, build a hut on the beach and live on coconuts, bananas, mangoes and fish. I was not the first person to ever have that plan, and a little research on my part revealed that it would [...]

Double celebration

Bobby with granddaughter Grace

Friday 9th September comments: There was double celebration in Seahouses recently as two well known boatmen had plenty to cheer. Mad keen Newcastle United supporter Bobby Person celebrated becoming a Grandad as his daughter, Becky, gave birth to a healthy baby girl; Grace, two weeks ago. As you can see, it hasn't taken Bobby long to get Grace kitted out in a Newcastle shirt, much to the disgust of this Sunderland supporting head warden!

Even more great news followed on Tuesday, as William and Rachel Shiel welcomed their second child, a baby daughter, Matilda Rose. I'm sure a few sleepless nights are expected but everyone connected with the Farnes wishes them all well.

Little Egret once again on the Longstone (Andy Denton)

Wheatears on the move

Over 71 today on the islands

Thursday 8th September comments: Its been a slow period for passage as westerly winds have dominated (up to gale force at times). However today brought a decrease in wind strength. allowing a small movement of birds through the islands.

The juvenile Little Egret returned to Longstone, once again, as it fed happily in rocks pools on the far eastern outcrop of the Farne Islands. A total of 71 Wheatears were counted across the islands (the highest ever day total) whilst 4 Whitethroats reminded us that there is autumn passage on. Throw in a female Sparrowhawk, a lingering Peregrine and a Kestrel, it hasn't bee a bad day on the islands. However the wind is due to increase once again, so here we go again...

Private Island Sales Going Strong

Chris Krolow, CEO Private Islands Inc.
Chris Krolow, CEO Private Islands Inc.

It is an exciting time in the private island world. With a large number of new islands for sale coming onto the market and changes in foreign ownership laws in some island regions of the world, 2012 is sure to be a record breaking year for island sales.

Private Islands Inc. CEO, Chris Krolow recently reported that his company is marketing more than a dozen new European private islands for sale. Krolow said there are currently 3 islands under contract and the Private Island’s network of brokers have reported an increasing number of sales across the board.

Krolow confirmed that the private island market is improving using the example of a rare Italian private island that came off the market last week, “We attempted to sell the very same island a number of years ago and only received a few serious inquiries. We are proud to report that after only a few months of a more direct marketing approach, we have completed the sale of this unique European island.”

Krolow is especially excited about this exclusive sale, not only because of the multi-million dollar price tag, but because it proves that our new and evolving marketing strategies are working.

The world of social media has reached the Farne Islands as we've branched out to the world of Twitter. For those who 'tweet', you can follow the daily movements of head warden David Steel on the islands throughout the autumn (with plenty of updates about our Grey Seals) on @NTsteely.

Although this is fairly new (to me) we already have other unofficial twitters on the islands. resident warden Wez Smith can be followed on @FarnesWardenWez (well worth a look, he's been tweeting all season) as well as local boatman Andy Douglas on @thefarnes.

Therefore if you're bored and want to follow the daily lives of Farne Islands wardens, get tweeting...

Home Life times

Hm. It seems to me a made a promise a while back that I39d update the world about my comings and goings in Germany. Seems like a grand idea I wonder what happened to...oh wait that39s right I39ve been pretty lazy recently. Well anyways this marks the first attempt to really rectify that. Since it39s been closing in on two weeks since the last one of these that I put up and that w

MidAutumn Festival…

Getting used to the whole 39living for the weekend39 thing is strange. I never realised how quickly time can fly between Friday night and Sunday and i39m thanking my lucky stars I actually quite enjoy my job apart from lesson plans and schemes of work and action plans. Basically paperwork in general. I39m not good at keeping things in files. But this week the sunday blues are a

Glasgow

Darkness is setting in in Toronto as we board the A330 for Glasgow. Its hard to believe 400 people have paid good money for the opportunity to cram themselves into a 9 seat wide aluminum tube with wings for a 6 12 hour flight. The view of Torontos lights as the engines thrust us skyward into the night was breathtaking. We could just make out the moonlight glinting off Lake Ontario as we d

King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut

Note Since I39ve become lazy with blogging due to internet troubles and how much cooler going out and experiencing things in Glasgow are than sitting in my room hooked to a computer this blog will cease to be in any particular order. King Tut39s Wah Wah Hut looks like any of the apartments surrounding it from the outside. The sign is easy to miss and though it boasts itself as the UK

It’s very dry in The Alice.

This morning we farewelled Yulara and continued our journey north to Alice Springs. It was a lovely sunny day with the wind picking up in the afternoon. We stopped for lunch in the shade of the roadhouse at Stuarts Well. Apparently Stuarts Well is famous for Dingley the Singing and piano playing Dingo according to the information board. We chose not to pursue it.As we got closer to Alice Spr

For Two Months I Was A Ugandan

When I arrived in Tanzania the folks at VSO took my passport from me. They told me that they needed to send it to the Immigration Department to get my work permit. I handed it over gladly. They promised me they would get it back to me as soon as possible. Two weeks later I received my passport and a document that I am supposed to carry with me in case anyone should want to see my papers.
